The Doyen are the elders of our town and make all of the major decisions. Free popcorn for the evening? Fired for chewing gum? You name it, if they want it and there is enough votes, it will happen. To my dismay, the girl was gone in the time it took to blink twice. It is going to be hard to find someone so fleet footed without using magick. What a chaotic girl! I wonder what her race is? Damn good way to start off your 200th centenary. I mean this is Shedeth! This place is supposed to be known for it''s peace and people like her go around running into things with little to no apologies. Why is there an outlander in the countryside, we haven''t had a new arrival in how long now... well it''s been a long time." She made a good choice of choosing Shedeth, it is definitely one of the best places to live in all of Syldarim. Shedeth is one of many peaceful towns in the continent of Syldarim and is known for its rolling hills and its dense fabled woods. The trees here are a strange sort. There is a rumor that hundreds of thousands of years ago a brokenly powerful witch cast an enchantment on them to always be in a state of autumn. Why would someone even bother doing that... anyways, there is no shortage of beautiful yellow, orange, and red leaves in Shedeth! "To bad, she resembles a Human, I can''t be certain she is one though. What do you know about her?" In Syldarim it is rare to see a Human. The predominant races are Elves and Jasrai with some minor races of course: Humans, Miucnur, Dwarves, Goblins, and Skrit. The later two are more of a wild beast than a race but they have enough of a self awareness and civilization to be considered a race. Humans and Dwarves, they are a greedy races, similar to the Skrit, and are usually in hiding. Miucnur are essentially cat people that live in northern Syldarim; their fur keeps them warm despite the cold climate. As for Humans, they are few number compared to the other races and this results in them usually being caught and made into slaves. Peering at me from behind a sign as if scared provided some useful information. ¡°I knows her name is Josay Pial, kinda suits her don''t ya think? I also found out she''s from the land of healing so she has probably got some serious business to have left the safety of her home.¡± ¡°What?! She''s from Anlamthal? Looking around I notice the habitats the elves of Shedeth have chosen. I wonder how you''re supposed to get into the homes up there in the trees? Maybe teleportation magick? This place is so much more advanced than Anlamthal is. We just have houses made of hollowed out tree trunks. These guys even have some of the trees shaped by magick to make bridges between trees! I guess all I can do is wander around till that old man gives me the signal or whatever to find my new companion. "No! It sounds like it''s some kind of arranged marriage!" Shit. Everyone is looking at me now... it''s like they''ve seen a ghost or something. Jeez I''ll just leave this area and find a place that is relatively empty. Being the only one in the family that can use magick at a reasonable skill level is great! This way I can have peace and quiet because my room can only be entered through teleportation. Fuoosh! Now then time for a nap in peace and quiet until the party starts. *** BZZZZZZZZZZ! I bolt upright ready for battle. Oh, just the alarm. Jeez, why did I install such a loud buzzer? ¡°I''ll be down in a minute Rumala!" I guess it''s party time. I¡¯m really not one for parties of this sort. Lots of people. Lots of noise. Lots of bad decisions; I remember a time that I drank a bit to much and set a load of traps all over the estate. Traps that I had set to detonate on anyone who came across them. What a mess there was when I tried to get to the toilet. Then there was the foyer, the dining room, the garden, the common area. I think it took me until late that evening to find them all without destroying to much of the estate. That reminds me, will that girl Lyir told me about really coming to our place tonight?
"Danos it''s about time ya got down here! Hurry up or yer gonna miss out on the Waiss!" Noisy. "Shhh not so loud Emcess, I just woke up." "Nonesense! Have some Waiss to wake yerself up!" "Fine give me some before you drink it all!" I should have some before it''s all gone, Rumala only makes it in bulk on my centenaries anyway. People were starting to flood into the estate we call home at an alarming rate. Everyone wants to have some of the legendary Waiss. For free of course. Now then, time to go into stealth mode. "Din dae!" Thanks to my self-induced magical training I can hold this stealth spell for hours. Time to get out of here once and for all; I''ll just have to use a bit of teleportation magick though because of the crowd.
"Yes I''m out! Now I can go investigate that girl who whipped her freaking apple at me. She was up by the park when she ran off, I''ll look up there first. "Ok now I''m here what am I supposed to do... this was a pretty stupid idea coming out here with no course of action. ¡°I guess I''ll just hang here until the party is starting to wind down." I can practice my stealth spell at least; who knows, I might have to use it for longer than hours in the future. I wonder if I can.. Din Dae. Yes! I can use the spell just by mental incantation now! I''m making much faster progress than usual... maybe it is just because it''s my centenary. It might be like one of those things where your power is strongest on a full moon or something. Ugh this is hard to maintain after a few hours, but I must move forward! No pain no gain! So she finds it funny she hit me in the forehead; I''m tempted to hit her right now... but then my cover is blown. Wait Lyir is involved?! Who the hell is this girl?! I couldn¡¯t help letting out the breath I was holding while trying to hear what she was mumbling to herself. "Huuw" Crap she definitely heard that. But me, I''m her companion?! This is so no ok with me! When Lyir said a girl would be coming to meet me I never expected a hot-headed brunette that is prone to violence! I should stay and find out what exactly Lyir told her. So, we have to travel together with this... where we will need to use magick. Which means we will have to be traveling out in the wilderness stopping in at towns for supplies. Uh oh my spell has about five minutes left, I have to get out of here! Opportunity shines for me tonight! I don¡¯t know where this staff came from but it¡¯s begging me to smack her with it! Let¡¯s get this show on the road! Picking up the staff with a face that carried the weight of the world on it, Danos swiftly swing it in a wide arc above his head like an axe. Thump. The staff brought up solid in Josays skull. Surprisingly, it had a dampened effect on her. Why did that feel like it didn¡¯t hit as hard as it should have? I was hoping that would at least knock her off the bench.
¡°Ooowwwooooooooo¡± She let out a loud moaning noise while holding her hands on the top of her head. "Uh hi, soooo your the girl Lyir said would be coming to meet me huh?" "When did you get behind me? You¡¯re Danos Echee? You¡¯re the guy I hit with the¡ª" She didn¡¯t even finish her sentence out of what I can only imagine as embarrassment based on how red her face went. Conveniently, she also forgot that I had even smacked her with a staff that..vanished? Where did that go? Whatever. "Yes. The apple. The partially eaten one." My anger began to resurface after remembering that event. ¡°Do you treat everyone you run into like that?¡± Bingo. I struck another nerve. Before speaking again, the girl¡ªnow standing¡ªturned around and stammered ¡°n-no. I j-just got excited that I had seen you again b-because there was no-one else I had seen on more than one occasion since coming to Shedeth.¡± That¡¯s a fair argument I suppose? I would likely attach myself to someone I had seen multiple times while in a strange, new environment. How about we not make a habit of throwing partially eaten food at each other?¡± I got a smile out of her with that. Looks like I can actually be friends with her. Ah, we should probably discuss our¡ª Before I could even finish my thought process, she cut me off.¡°So! You and I will be companions in some grand adventure with no set destination in mind? By the way, my name is Josay Pial.¡± I already knew that ¡°and mine is Danos Echee, I am sure Lyir mentioned that much to you.¡± Why is she fidgeting? "Yeah. In the meantime, since it is your birthday, can you show me around Shedeth a bit more before we have to start traveling again? I have only been here since this morning and it would be a shame to not see the place fully.¡± Is she serious? Ugh although I really don''t want to she said that so cutely. Somehow, I had ended up with this cute girl I had only just met, in my arms. And, she is surprisingly light now that she is in my arms. I must have contorted my face strangely because she looked up at me like there was something wrong with me. ¡°Sorry, I am just surprised at how light you are. That robe of yours hid how small you are.¡± Ah! There it is! Cute girl blushing in my arms! "Hehe thanks. Now then can we go as far away from the square as possible?" "As far away? Um, alright that just means that we will go towards my house." Hah I bet Lyir said something offensive again, he always does that to the newcomers; I swear he enjoys it. "Ok lead on chauffeur!" At that comment, I dropped her on the ground at me feet. "Do not refer to your new partner... er I mean companion as your chauffeur." What a nuisance she is, I hope her personality is just one of those traits that are hardwired into her from the ancestors of her race. Speaking of which "hey, you never told me your race yet." ¡°Ow! "Hey Danos! Is that your house down there?" After walking for thirty minutes or so, we had finally reached the edge of my estate. "Yeah that''s my house... Rumala has a party every year on my centenary." Flipping around faster than I thought was possible with her size, "who''s Rumala?" "You''ll find out soon enough Josay." I just hope she doesn''t interrogate her like she does with all the newcomers. "Uh Josay before we go in you wait here, I have to warn Rumala of something..." "Can''t you wait till we get in?" "No, this is for your own safety so just wait please." "Okay, just be quick." "No problem! Lh?g laer." Although I haven''t mastered this spell entirely, I am a least able to use dragon speed. I noticed her face was that of one in awe. Thinking about it as I opened the front door, it makes sense because Dragon Song is a hard spell to master. Anyways, there is no way I can let Rumala interrogate her, the last newcomer was in shock for 2 days! I''ll just warn Rumala and be back for Josay in a less than 5 minutes! Chamber I knew such spells existed but damn, that seems a bit overpowered to be able to move that fast! I could barely keep track of him as he ran into the house! "Ugh now I have to wait... I''ll be useless if we have to fight a monster." In a solo battle you would be utterly useless but, with some offensive magick you¡¯re great!" No shit. I need to learn some offensive magick from him during our random adventure we are being sent on. "Thanks Danos, can we go to your house yet?" "Yup, I even prepared a bed for you to sleep in while we wait for news on our expedition." No way I could hide my shock at that! "You really prepared that fast and you warned Rumala of whatever too? That spell is really something!" He even made a bed for me!! Waving his hand so violently like that¡­he doesn¡¯t need to deny my compliment so vehemently. "No no no, the spell isn''t mastered yet; I can only use dragon speed right now." "Eh, dragon? Is that what you said in your spell?" I am even more interested in finding out how he learned a dragons spell. I heard such spells were lost with the disappearance of the dragons themselves! "Well part of it was but anyway, that¡¯s not important right now. When we get into the house, keep a firm hold of my hand. I am going to use teleportation magick to get us from the entrance and to my room. If we can, we will avoid all the other people here." Ehhhhh? Why does he have to hide me from people at a party? It can¡¯t be.. "Have you never brought a woman home or something? I have never been teleported by magick anywhere! I''ll get sick or something I know it!" "No you won''t, it will only take a seco¡ª" "Why do we have to use teleportation anyway, can''t we just run for it?" "Uh no, not exactly... my room has no doors so that I can have privacy. ¡°Oh dear mother of all babies. I said not to do that!¡± I was close to tears from that, it felt like my body was being wrenched away to a far away place and being compressed at the same time. How can people use that all the time! Now he has a smug face, he probably knew full well what it is like the first time someone teleports! ¡°Pfft you¡¯ll get used to it in no time considering we will be traveling together.¡± ¡°Whatever! Just give me more warning the next time!¡± ¡°Like you did with the apple?¡± What a pest. This guy, this trip is going to suck with him if this keeps up! Why does he look so confused about something in his own room? ¡°Oi, have you never seen something that is in your own room before?¡± Silence. No one ignores me! Thwump. Josay karate chopped him right in the middle of his skull. Which felt like a brick. ¡°You shithead! Are you made of stone?¡± Preparing for some sort of counterattack from Danos, Josay took a stance but he just looked pale and serious. ¡°Josay, when I struck you on the head I used this staff here. This staff also disappeared shortly after I did so, I thought nothing of it but now it is in my room and I can promise you I did not bring it here.¡± Josay and Danos both look at each other and then at the staff. Half worried about it, Danos starts to look closely at the staff clearly looking for some sign of who the owner of the staff is. ¡°Danos, do you think that it might be enchanted? I didn¡¯t get a good look at it as you nailed me with it but now, I can be certain it should have hurt a lot more than it did.¡± That staff is strange, it felt like I was smacked with something covered in cloth rather than a blunt weapon. The staff was a rosy color with intricate lines across it that, at a glance, would appear as simple age rings. The base of the staff was like new, it looked as if someone had only just finished making it. The top of the staff had a cone shape that closed off with a smooth round top. After inspecting the staff for another what felt like ages, Danos finally spoke. ¡°This staff is definitely enchanted. It disappeared and reappeared in front of me without my knowing. The only thing I can think of is that Lyir hexed it to follow me but I cannot be certain.¡±Stolen content warning: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. Whatever, it¡¯s late, I¡¯ve been running about all day, I¡¯m hungry, I want to sleep. ¡°Danos, we can worry about that stick tomorrow. I have not eaten a proper meal since arriving here this morning. Can you go downstairs and get some food for me?¡± It bothers me but I would rather him get me food than go through that teleport shit again. No one noticed that as Danos teleported out of his room, the staff teleported with him as well.
¡°Rumala! I¡¯m taking some food and Waiss to my room. Something came up so I have to investigate it!¡± Danos swiftly weaved through the crowd that was at the house specifically for his party¡ªor was it the Waiss¡ªand teleported back to his room without noticing the staff the entire time. ¡°Food!¡± You never know just how hungry you are until you haven¡¯t eaten all day and finally see food. ¡°Gimme, gimme! I¡¯m starving here Danos.¡± Seeing this as an opportunity, Danos spoke. ¡°Josay, while you¡¯re eating, I am going to step out to get some air to think about what we should bring on our excursion.¡± ¡°Yeah, yeah, not like I can go anywhere without you teleporting me anyways.¡± Simple, Josay can be monitored while I am out. The last thing I need is for her to suddenly disappear while I¡¯m out. ¡°If I am not back soon, feel free to sleep on the bed.¡± With those last word, Danos teleported out again, without realizing the staff was coming with him. It wasn¡¯t until he had stepped outside that he noticed the staff hovering just above the ground behind his back. As if the staff had a mind of its own, it suddenly darted off as if in embarrassment at being suddenly discovered. Except, it came back after realizing some greater purpose it had. The staff began to etch something into the dirt in front of the dumbfounded Danos. An arrow, pointing into the woods just behind the staff. ¡°Why would a random stick like you want me to go into the woods at this time of the night?¡± I should be careful here, this could be some sort of trap. Danos began to follow the staff in the direction it had moved into the woods. Muttering under his breath Danos made a few points as if to validate the reality of the situation. ¡°I grew up in this neighborhood, I know this area better than I know the back of my hand. If someone is out to ambush me, they are going to have a horrible experience.¡± After some time had passed, the staff had brought Danos to a rock face. A cliff face that shot up sharply. It was the base of the national park in Shedeth. ¡°What. You wanted to show me a cli¡ª¡± While Danos was speaking, the staff had gone up to the rock face and tapped on it. Then, it hovered its way to Danos and tapped on him. ¡°What in the hell is this!¡± After being tapped by the staff, an ancient looking doorway materialized in the rock face directly in front of him. ¡°Is this Dwarven make? Such clean lines¡­and the hidden entrance. What is this place?¡± Not knowing what else to do, Danos started walking into the rock face entrance after the staff. This is strange, I never heard of such a place existing in Shedeth. This could be something that the elders are unaware of themselves! Getting excited, Danos began to increase his pace. What secrets lay in wait within?
We¡¯ve been going down this path for ages, what in the world is this cavern? We have also passed many side tunnels on the way. If it weren¡¯t for this staff, I would be off exploring every tunnel and likely be lost right now. Suddenly, the two dungeon explorers had come to a t-crossing. ¡°Staff, left or right?¡± Having given up on the thought of being ambushed, Danos had begun to talk openly to the staff as if it were Emcess on an adventure with him. The question, triggered something in the staff as it had suddenly gone right and stopped about 17 Nurn. It then tapped the right side of the tunnel and then Danos like it had done at the beginning of the dungeon. ¡°Another doorway appeared in the rock wall! What is this place?¡± Danos was already on his way inside the doorway before finishing what he was saying. Once passed the doorway, Danos noticed this room was very different in design compared to the rest of the tunnels. It was a room of strange design. It was a sphere with a semi-transparent floor covering the entire area. Below the floor there was some strange purple crystal that emitted a bright light providing a light source for the chamber. Along the sides of the chamber, there were pulsing designs that depicted a language unknown to Danos. Despite the unique discovery of this chamber, Danos had ignored any other details because of what was in the center of the chamber. A single pedestal with purple lights moving in a wave like fashion from its base to its peak. On the pedestal was a floating crystal. The crystal was jet black and opaque. ¡°What an ominous looking crystal. I wonder what purpose it serves by being so deep within this tunnel system. Even having a second hidden door?¡± Seemingly uninterested in anything anymore, the staff had been going around the spherical room bouncing on the floor as it went. ¡°I guess this is what that staff wanted me to see?¡± Danos began to approach the pedestal when he noticed the crystal started to spin slightly. As he got closer it rotated until it pointed directly at Danos. But, that was it, all it did was point at Danos as if he were a magnetic force compelling a compass. After dismissing the thought of it being an attack system against intruders, Danos walked closer to it until he was ready to touch it. ¡°For the staff to bring me here to this chamber it obviously wants me to either take the crystal or use it for something inside this chamber.¡± However, as soon as Danos touched the crystal the light emitting crystals below changed to an almost black color. Having suddenly changed to a darker color, Danos¡¯ eyes had to readjust to the lighting. Before he could though, the crystals returned to their bright purple ambient lighting they were before leaving Danos blinded yet again. When Danos was able to see again he was back in his room with a poorly postured sleeping Josay. ¡°She could at least cover herself. I mean, I can see her tits and everything. At least she is good looking. Fuck. She will have to fix that sleeping posture if I am going to be bringing Emcess along with us.¡± I suppose I should get some sleep too but what the hell just happened? I am pretty sure I touched the crystal but then the lighting went nuts and I couldn¡¯t see well. I might be crazy but I swear the crystal disappeared after I touched it. Or did I absorb it? Suddenly he realized. ¡°Oi, staff. Where did that staff go?¡± As if answering a summons, the staff poked out from behind a bookcase in the room. ¡°Well, at least you teleported back with me somehow. I have no idea why you wanted me to see that crystal though?¡± The staff did a strange back and forth wobble at that as if to indicate it wishes it could communicate better. ¡°Are you really just a staff? You clearly have some sort of intelligence that lets you think for yourself.¡± After all of the days events, Danos started to nod off while leaning against the foot of his bed. Glossary Language
