《Inheritance》
Prologue
Prologue
I look around, bewildered by the scenery before me, pinching myself then rubbing my eyes to make sure I''m not dreaming or hallucinating. It hurts, and the view remains the same, so I can only assume it''s real.
I had just awoken to find myself in a forest, surrounded by large trees and unfamiliar plants, with no clue where I am, nor how I got here. I still feel half asleep, my brain foggy and my body heavy, I try to focus and remember how I got here.
My name is William. I can''t remember my surname, or any other names for that matter. Just William. I''m 18 years old. I''m an orphan who was left on the doorstep of an orphanage just after being born. I wasn''t close to anyone at the orphanage, nor did I particularly have any problems with anyone. I kept to myself, spending most of my time at the local library reading fantasy novels, and when I ran out of those, I started reading web novels on the library computers.
I consider myself above average, but not really special in any way. Reasonably tall at 185cm, decent looking, decent at sport, intelligent, though I never did anything with my intelligence. Extremely introverted when I was younger, I''d never initiate a conversation, only giving monosyllabic replies when someone spoke to me, but I gradually became more comfortable with myself and opened up, though I still prefered solitude. I was always a rather... disinterested person. I came across as calm and accepting, but the truth was, I just didn''t care. My only interest was fantasy.Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on the original website.
One month before I turned 18 I was contacted by a lawyer who told me my parents had died in a car accident a year earlier, and my grandfather had died 2 weeks ago, due to his health gradually declining since my parents death. I arranged to meet him two days later. There he told me that my grandfather had forced my mother to get rid of me, as he didn''t approve of my father at the time, and they weren''t married yet. They later got married against his will, and he disowned them.
It turned out my grandfather was rich, and I was his last living blood relative. According to his will, I was to inherit half of his possessions, while the other half went to his 33 year old wife. However I couldn''t receive my inheritance until I turned 18, one month later.
I informed the manager of the orphanage that I would be leaving and traveled with the lawyer to my grandfathers estate. There I met his widow, who was very welcoming. Until...
Two weeks later, while eating lunch with my grandfathers widow, I suddenly started to feel extremely lightheaded. Confused, I looked towards her. She smiled at me like nothing was wrong.
"I put up with that disgusting old man for six years. It was a lot of trouble making your parents death look accidental, then slowly poisoning him to death without raising suspicion. Now you come out of nowhere and think you can have what''s mine?" (Step-Grandmother)
I collapsed, and as my consciousness faded I heard footsteps, then heard the lawyers voice.
"Everything is arranged. He''ll disappear and there''s no evidence to link it back to us. The inheritance is all ours, little sister." (Lawyer)
Then everything went dark...
Chapter One
Chapter 1
"Well, fuck... I was really stupid wasn''t I?" (William)
I look around, observing more closely this time. I didn''t recognise the plants around me, but that didn''t mean much, since I knew next to nothing about plants.
I check my condition. I don''t appear to have any injuries. I''m wearing faded blue jeans, a blue shirt with a white singlet underneath, and a pair of worn joggers. I wasn''t carrying anything else with me. My stomach was aching from hunger, and my throat was dry.
Why am I in a forest? Didn''t they plan to kill me? I guess I should leave that for later and try to find some food or water first. Hopefully there are no dangerous animals here.
I stand up and stretch my body, which is a bit sore from lying on top of a tree root. I''m unable to see anything through the trees, so I pick a random direction and start walking, as quietly as possible. Which is about as quiet as an Elephant, I''d say. After several minutes of walking, I come across a fruit tree. The fruit looks like a purple apple. Despite the suspicious colour, my stomach is screaming at me to feed it so I decide to risk it and pick one. Taking a bite, my mouth is filled with an explosion of sweet, tangy juice.
"God, that''s good..." (William)
I quickly devour two more. Taking off my shirt, I wrap roughly a dozen of the fruits in it. Carrying the bundle, I continue in the same direction as before.
I eventually come across a clearing. The moment I step into it, I freeze in shock, wide eyes staring ahead. There, at the other end of the clearing, is a small humanoid with its back to me, crouched down examining something. It''s around a metre tall with green skin, extremely thin and bony, wearing a filthy looking rag around its waist. There''s a crude wooden club approximately 70 centimetres long lying on the ground next to it. I can smell a foul odour from here. No matter how I look at it, it can only be one thing...
"WHAT THE FUCK?!" (William)
The creature jumps in surprise, quickly picking up its club and turning the face me. It tilts its head and stares at me for a few seconds, before letting out a shriek of glee and charging towards me, waving the club around. In panic, I try to back away from it, only to trip over a tree root, dropping my bundle of apples. I look up and see it right before me, grinning, it''s club raised, ready to swing down on me. I do the only thing I can think of, an action that will forever haunt me as a man... I kick it between the legs as hard as I can from my awkward position.
Unexpectedly, it flies back around a metre, screaming in pain, its club flying off to the side. It lands on its back and curls up, it''s hands between its legs, sobbing. After recovering from my momentary shock, I finally really how small it is compared to me. It can''t weigh more than 20 kilograms, compared to my 90. I stand up and run to it''s fallen club, picking it up and turning to face the creature, which is now struggling to stand up, while glaring at me with bloodshot eyes and tears running down its ugly green face. I run towards it before it can stand and kick it in the side to knock it over again, then hit it over the head with the club as hard as I can until it finally stops moving.Reading on Amazon or a pirate site? I stand there, breathing hard from the adrenaline, and stare at the bloody pulp that used to be this creatures head. As the adrenaline starts to wear off, my legs give out and I fall to my knees. I then proceed to empty the contents of my recently filled stomach, then just kneel there, shivering, unable to think. After several minutes my rationality begins to return, though I continue shivering, unable to move for the moment.
Is this what they call being in shock? I''ve never knowingly killed anything before... Wait! Before that, this is a Goblin isn''t it? At least it matches the description from most of the novels I''ve read, but they don''t really exist... Unless...
Suddenly, a strange screen with writing on it appeared in front of my eyes. I stared blankly at it for a few seconds, then tried touching it, but my hand just went through it. I then finally look at what it says.

"... Huh...?" (William)
Chapter Two
Chapter 2
After reading everything written on the screen, it disappeared. I once again look at the corpse of the ''Young Goblin''. Unable to contain it, I suddenly burst into laughter, which continues for several minutes. After finally calming myself down, I consider my situation.
I can''t quite believe it, but it seems like I''ve come to another world. One with a game-like system no less! Something I frequently fantasised about. I need to calm down for now though. I should probably get out of here first. Goblins are known to move in groups, and this one was still young, so adults must be nearby. The smell of blood also might attract other creatures. On top of that, I''ve been pretty noisy the last few minutes.
Having decided I need to quickly leave this place, I stand up, pick up the goblins club, collect my dropped bundle of purple apples and continue in the direction I was initially heading. My body feels a lot lighter compared to before. Levels and attributes are a wonderful thing!
I need to find shelter. Based on the position of the sun seen from the clearing it''ll start getting darker soon. After a short while, I come across 2 more Goblins. These ones appear to be adults. I quickly hide behind a tree. It seems they haven''t noticed me yet, and are slowly heading in my direction, so I decide to launch a surprise attack when they pass the tree I''m hiding behind. I focus on the sound of them approaching, trying to keep my breathing steady. Just as they walk past my tree, I tightly grip my club and jump out behind them, swinging the club at the back of the closest ones head. The blow connects and the goblin goes flying 2 metres forward. Just as the other one turns to look at me, the club reaches its head as well. This one also flies foward a couple of metres. I move closer to them, club at the ready, however neither one is moving. Upon looking closer, the first ones neck looks like its broken, while the other is bleeding from its ear. Neither appears to be breathing. The window appears again...

Well, that was easier than expected. I suppose I have my level up earlier to thank for that. Still, Virility... Damn horny Goblins. Did I just become a virgin sex god?
I don''t feel anything after killing these two goblins. Then again, my emotions have always seemed dull compared to others. Honestly, my reaction to the first goblin was more surprising to me. After examining the bodies, I swap my current club for a new one, as it''s slightly longer, then continue on my way. It''s almost night time now.
As luck would have it, I stumble upon a large hollow tree, with an opening big enough for me to crawl in through. I search around the area and find a fairly large fallen branch, with the leaves still attached. I drag it over in front of the tree opening, crawl into the tree, and pull the end of the branch closer so that the leaves cover the hole.
I REALLY hope there are no spiders in here... Thankfully I found shelter before it got completely dark.
I settle in as best I can, eat an apple, and start contemplating what I''m going to do now. As it gets dark, the forest seems to come alive with sounds, putting me on edge.
Wait, if this is really a game-like fantasy world, there should be status screens. There was the level up screen earlier as well. STATUS!
To my delight, it works. A semi-transparent screen appears before me.

That''s all pretty easy to understand. I not entirely sure how my unique class works, but it seems like it''ll be strong in the future. There''s also the fact that it increases luck and charisma, which seems like it''ll be pretty insane combined with my 10x attribute growth... Still, I should leave those thoughts for later. For now I need to focus on surviving. I should try to get some sleep.
It''s surprisingly warm inside the tree. I close my eyes and attempt to fall asleep, however the noises of the night time forest - the sound of unknown creatures, the rustling of leaves and the occasional howl of a wolf - keep me from doing so. Thus I settle in for a sleepless night and try to rest as well as I can.
Chapter Three
Chapter 3
I awaken suddenly, finding myself still inside the hollow tree with the hole still covered by the leaves of the branch I dragged over. Pushing aside some leaves, I look outside, trying to discover what woke me. It appears to be day.
Seems I fell asleep in the end. I was exhausted after all, yesterday was mentally taxing. I need to find a source of water soon, the juice from this fruit won''t keep me going for long. If only I could use magic to make water... Well, a guy can dream. I''ll need to find more food as well, hopefully there are more of those fruit trees nearby...
I eat a couple of apples, leaving me with only eight, then decide to set out, carrying my bundle in my left hand. I hear a grunting sound as I''m crawling out of the tree, and look up to see four goblins staring at me in surprise from around five metres away. Quickly scurrying the rest of the way out and jumping to my feet, I look around for my club.
Shit! I dropped it to drag this branch last night! STUPID!
The goblins recover from their surprise and start to charge me. It only takes a couple of seconds for the first one to reach me. In a panic, I swing my apple filled shirt at it, but it avoids it by jumping back, bumping into another goblin behind it. Unfortunately my bundled shirt came undone and the apples flew out.
I turn, intending to flee in the opposite direction, only to find a fifth goblin sneaking up behind me. When it realised it has been discovered, it jumps at me and swings its club at my head. I quickly dive to the right, however the club managed to connect with my left arm, and I lose hold of my shirt as I hit the ground. I don''t have time to care about that right now, as I get to me feet as quickly as possible and run. I can hear them grunting behind me as they give chase, but thankfully I''m faster than them and soon leave them behind. After running for what felt like an hour, but in reality was less than five minutes, I stop and lean against a tree to catch my breath, while confirming that I can''t hear them behind me any more.
Shit! Too close... Goblins can pull sneak attacks?! I''ve been taking this too lightly, treating it like a holiday. I need to be more careful from now on. Thank god I didn''t run into anything else while running away! I did lose my only food though, and my shirt which I might have needed for warmth later...
I check my arm where I was struck. It''s painful, but nothing seems to be broken. A small price to pay for reminding me that I could very easily die here I suppose.
Having now caught my breath, I start walking in the same direction I was running, since one direction is as good as another and it''s away from those goblins. I''m being more cautious now, trying to step silently and keeping my ears and eyes open for danger. After a short while, I notice a glimmer of light to my right. I feel excited for a moment, thinking I might have reached the edge of the forest, before remembering my predicament and regaining my calm. I start to slowly head in the direction of the light.
The further I walk, the lighter the forest gets, until finally I''m close enough to see it. A lake, perhaps fifty metres in diameter, and the beautiful, clear sky above it. The water is possibly the clearest I''ve ever seen in nature, and there are fish visible here and there. Overcome with relief, I almost run towards it before remembering my predicament.
If this is drinkable water, then there are likely creatures living close to it. I need to be even more careful here, never know what is going to show up for a drink. Maybe there''s a lake monster lying in wait for unsuspecting thirsty victims?! Oops. Gotta be careful of foreshadowing. Wait... Is it a Pond or a Lake? What''s the difference? Is there even a difference? Is it a size requirement? ARE THEY THE SAME THING?! ... Eh, who cares...
I slowly approch the edge of the treeline, eyes peeled for anything suspicious in or around the water. Not noticing anything, I step into the sunlight and approach the waters edge. I look around me once more, crouch and cup my hands in the water, then lift them and drink.
OH! MY! GODDESS! Delicious! Refreshing! Though not having had anything to drink for more than a day may have something to do with it. MORE!
I end up going slightly overboard, and by the time I''m done drinking my stomach is sloshing slightly when I move. I sit down and spend a few minutes carelessly admiring the lake and enjoying the warm sunshine. My enjoyment doesn''t last long, however, as I hear something from the trees across the lake. I jump to my feet and hurry back to the cover of the trees, hiding behind one and peeking around to see what''s coming.
What appears is...
Haaa... How anticlimactic. More goblins. Are there nothing but goblins in this forest? I suppose I should try to kill it for experience since it''s alone.
I start making my way around the lake while staying hidden in the trees. The goblin has its face down at the water level and is lapping water like a dog. I almost wish I hadn''t drunk that water now. Almost. When I''ve made my way half way around the lake it stops drinking, but it doesn''t appear to be in a hurry to leave. When I''m roughly fiften metres from it, it stands and move back towards the forest where it came from. I consider rushing it, but I change my mind and decide to try following it instead. Thankfully it seems unguarded, else it would surely notice my clumsy attempts at stalking. At least until a few minutes later when...

My movements change suddenly, becoming noticably more smooth and quiet, and knowledge of how to move unnoticed miraculously appears in my mind.
How convenient.
Following the goblin is now much easier, and after another ten minutes I can see a small mountain just ahead, perhaps twenty metres tall. I slow down to let the goblin get a bit further ahead before continuing my pursuit. It slowly makes its way around the mountain, before entering a small, well hidden cave opening on the other side, with another goblin standing just outside.
A guard? Is this where they live? The entrance is well hidden, it''d make a good base if I could clear out the goblins. I have no idea how many are inside though. Maybe if I kill one after it leaves, more will come out looking for it? It''s worth a try.
I search the area for a comfortable hiding place. Sadly I can''t find one. Thus I pick the tree with the best view of the entrance and settle in to wait. Boring.
An hour or so later two goblins leave the cave, carrying crude wooden buckets. They head towards the lake and I follow them. They arrive at the lake, have a drink like the earlier goblin, then start filling their buckets.
They finish filling their buckets and start to head back. Soon after leaving the lake, I decide it''s time to strike. I approach them from behind silently, which is surprisingly easy with my new skills. They don''t notice me until I''ve already kicked one of them in the back, sending it sprawling. Before the other one can react, I grap it from behind and try to snap its neck like they do in movies. It''s not as easy as it looks, but I manage to get it right after a few attempts. The first one is now climbing to its feet, staring at me angrily. No choice but to fight it head on now.
This one is more careful than the young one I first fought. It doesn''t blindly charge me. I make my best attempt at a boxing stance, and wait for it to approch. It picks up one of the spilled buckets and runs at me, then stops just out of my reach, causing my first punch to miss, then jumps at me, swinging the bucket at my side. I manage to clumsily block the bucket with my left forearm, but lose my balance in the process, allowing it another swing, this time at my head. For some reason, I decide to punch the bucket with my right hand. The bucket breaks. Guess I should have done that in the first place. The goblin stared sumbly at it''s broken weapon for a brief moment, then with an audible crunch, it goes flying back from being punched in the face.

Upon leveling up I feel refreshed. I also feel more power in my body, and knowledge once again appears in my mind, this time about how to effectively fight with my body. I try a few punches and kicks and they feel smoother and sharper than before.
Ah, this is a great feeling. OPness here I come! ... Dreams are free...
Picking up the unbroken bucket, I return to the lake, have a quick drink, then fill the bucket and head back towards the cave. While making my way around the mountain, I spot rocks here and there, and decide to keep my eye out for one with an edge that I might be able to use as a tool, thinking to carve a crude wooden spear from a tree branch. I find one that seems like it''ll do the job, placing it in my pocket. It doesn''t take me long to find a suitable branch on the ground, about two and a half metres long and ten centimetes in diameter at the base. I continue on to the cave, but this time I hide further away, in case they hear the sounds of me carving my spear.
Firstly, I saw off half a metre from the thin end of the branch, since it seems too thin and weak to be of any use. Then I scrape all long the sides of the branch, to remove the bark and try to make the shaft more even in thickness. It ends up being around six to seven centimetres in diameter when I''m done. I sharpen a point about fifteen centimetres long, and my crude spear is done.
I don''t know if this will be any use in combat, since I know nothing about weapons. Still, it makes me feel slightly more secure having a weapon with a bit of reach. Though unarmed combat is probably more reliable, since then I can''t be disarmed... Unless they literally remove my arms of course... Now then, time to test this thing.
I discard the now slightly blunt stone, pick up my spear and move to my former hiding spot where I can see the cave entrance. Amazingly, the guard seems to be asleep.
Goblins... So cliche.
I decide to test the limits of my hiding and sneaking skills, and see how close I can get to the sleeping guard without disturbing it, only to find myself standing within arms reach with it still snoring away without a care. Killing the guard would likely raise their vigilance and make things more difficult in future, but I just can''t seem to stop myself. Grasping my spear near the head in my right hand, I clamp my left hand over its nose and mouth. It wakes up in surprise, and begins to struggle upon seeing me. Then I thrust the tip of my spear into its throat. Its struggles soon end.

Feeling the now familiar rush of power and energy upon leveling up, and new information appearing in my mind, as well as a strange warmth in my loins, I pull my spear out of the guards neck and quickly look around to see if I was noticed. It appears I wasn''t. I lift the surprisingly light body of the goblin with one arm and hide it in a nearby bush. I briefly look myself over. There are a few blood splatter on my singlet, and my spear tip is bloody. I wipe my spear off on the goblins loincloth, though that might actually make it dirtier...
Returning to the cave mouth, I tentatively make my way inside, hoping to find out their numbers. Around ten metres in the tunnel turns sharply. I peek around the corner and see a cavern approximately five metres high and ten metres in diameter. I see four goblins in the cavern, and another tunnel opposite me.
Hmm... I might be able to take on four goblins now, but I don''t know if there are others through that tunnel, and if there are, there''s no doubt they''d hear the fighting. I''ll retreat for now. I''m getting hungry...
I leave the cave and return to my lookout tree, taking the dead guards club that was lying on the ground with me. I have a drink from the bucket and continue waiting. About half an hour later, two goblins come out. Seeing that the guard is missing, one of them goes back into the cave and returns a moment later with another goblin, which replaces the guard. The two then head off in a new direction, away from the lake. Naturally I follow them.
So their guard goes missing and they just place another guard without a care? How careless can you get?
After ten minutes of walking, they come upon a fruit tree...
Ah! My beloved purple apples! I missed you! I thought I''d never see you again! Come to me and experience my lips once more! ...Or not...
The goblins, being only slightly over a metre tall, can''t reach the apples, so I wonder what they''ll do. One squats, the other gets on its shoulder, the bottom one stands and then the top one can just reach the lower fruits.
I really should have thought of that... Nonetheless, chance!
I run forward and thrust my spear into the back of the bottom one, right between the shoulder blades. It came out the other side...
Weak! Goblins are too weak! This pathetic spear in the hands of a beginner ran it through! I think I''ll stop using it against goblins, I really don''t like the thought of my shaft penetrating them... Curse my filthy mind! Unarmed combat it is. At least unarmed combat isn''t dependent on weapons. Too bad there are some things fists just can''t overcome... Really wish I had a Bastard Sword handy. Such a versatile weapon if you can use it well. Plus, they''re so damn cool! Viva Bastard Swords! Oops, fighting right now.
The goblin on top hasn''t noticed yet, it''s stretching to reach the apples. Then the bottom one collapses, seemingly dead, and the top one somehow managed to jump off its shoulders before it hits the ground. It turns to face me angrily.
I''m getting sick of these angry glares... Let''s get this over with.
I assume a boxing stance, which now feels a lot more natural due to the unarmed combat skill. Predictably, the goblin charges at me like an idiot, I punch it in the face, it flies briefly, and it''s over. The end.

Sneaking, Hiding and now Assassination... I don''t want to be an assassin! Oh well, any skill is a good skill... Probably...
After the familiar feeling of leveling up and the new knowledge in my mind, I quickly pick a few apples and begin eating them. My hunger is sated after eating four, so I hide the bodies and make my way back to the cave, making sure to remember the way to the tree. Soon after returning, another goblin leaves the cave and heads towards the lake. Of course I''m going to follow it... It doesn''t even need to be said any more.
Are they finally going to check on the water gatherers? It''s already been a few hours since then...
As soon as its away from the mountain, I sneak up behind it and break its neck. It''s a lot easier now than the first time I tried.

Seems like this one was extra horny, since it gave the most skill experience yet. Still, all these goblins are male. Are there no female goblins in this world? Well, I''ve killed 3 goblins and there''s one guarding the cave opening. That accounts for the four I saw in the cavern earlier, so if I can manage to kill the guard quietly I can see if there are any more.
I pick up some small rocks on my way back to the cave. The guard is still there when I return. I throw a rock at the tree closest to the cave. The guard hears and it looks around for a moment, then walks to the tree. Upon walking around the tree to look, it has its back to me, less than ten metres away. I sneak towards it, intending to break its neck, but it turns around when I''m halfway and sees me. It lets out and unintelligable scream before my fist hits its face. Another flying goblin corpse.

I quickly run back to my lookout tree, grab my spear, and wait to see what will come after the guards scream. Three goblins exit the cave. These are different to the ones I encountered before. two of them are smaller than the others, and judging by the bulges on their chest they are female. The other is slightly larger than the others I encountered, and is carrying a gnarled wooden staff.
Guess that answers my question about female goblins... This guy was just hogging them to himself. Is this guy a mage?
I carefully sneak closer to them as they search around, moving from tree to tree while they''re not looking. As I get within ten metres of them I freeze. The magey looking goblin suddenly turned around and stared in my direction. I stay as still as possible, and after five seconds it turns away.
That was close... I really need to kill this guy first. If I can do that, the females shouldn''t be hard to deal with. They look pretty weak.
I decide to I need to be quick. Grasping my shaft, I jump out from behind my tree and rush at the mage. It turns towards me with a smirk, raising its hand and muttering something I can''t understand. Suddenly a small fireball is flying towards me. I try to sidestep it, but it follows me. Desperate, I attack the fireball with my spear. The fireball explodes and I get knocked back by the shockwave, uninjured. However, my spear is destroyed... Half of it is simply gone, it''s now just a stick with a charred end.
The goblin mage looks at me in surprise for a moment, before it starts muttering again. I throw my spear-turned-burned-stick at him, which he avoids, interrupting what I assume is a chant. I charge towards him, reaching him in around two seconds. He appears panicked as my fist flies towards his face. Then he too turns into a flying goblin corpse with its face caved in...
Istumble forwards from a sudden impact on my back. One of the female goblins got behind me and hit me with her club. The second one then jumps towards me from the side, club raised. I raise my right arm to block it.
OUCH! That... doesn''t hurt?
I scramble to my feet just in time, as the first ones club is coming at me again. I raise my right arm to block this as well
I jump back to gain some distance, causing the second goblin to miss me. They both charge towards me, so I move to one side, trying to get one between me and the other so they can''t attack me at the same time. It works, and the one that attacked me first reaches me. I just manage to evade her clumsy swing this time, and punch her in the face. Another flying goblin... The second reaches me as I recover from my kick, and I do the exact same thing. Side step. Face-punch. Flying goblin. This one hits a tree and stops moving.
Chuck Norris got nothin'' on me!

After leveling up,I felt refreshed as the familiar wave of power filled me, plus a feeling of heat in my groin that lasted for a few seconds. There was no magical knowledge from the magical skills, I guess they just help me with using my own magical knowledge. However... I was flooded with knowledge of anatomy, especially the locations of nerves and erogenous zones. Unfortunately, it wasn''t only about women... Or humanoids...
Thanks very much for those disturbing mental images... Still, knowledge of monster anatomy could also be useful in combat, so I guess it''s fine. Aside from that... MAGIC! I wonder if I can become a magical martial artist in the future?! Punching compressed air, kicking blades of wind! Wind always was my favourite element... Well, I still need to learn how to use it though...
After calming down, I headed into the cave...
Chapter Four
Chapter 4
I make my way into the cave, looking around for hidden enemies or useful objects. A quick search of the cavern in which I saw the goblins earlier yields nothing of use, however I take the single torch from the wall. I make my way to the opening on the other side of the cavern. It leads upwards for roughly ten metres before turning and opening onto another cavern. Thus one is smaller than the first one, perhaps seven metres across and three metres high.
It appears to be the mages room. There are some hides bunched up to one side, stained with things I definitely don''t want to think about. Opposite the hides is a stone that seems to have served as a table. Resting on it is a dagger in a sheath. I walk over and pick it up, drawing it. It''s made of a light silvery metal. The blade is approximately thirty-five centimetres long and five centimetres wide at the base with a blood groove one centimetre wide and twenty centimetres long. The crossguard is thirteen centimetres wide and the handle is twenty-three centimetres long, covered in soft black leather. The pommel is an oval with some type of leaf emblem on it. The sheath is made of the same leather as that covering the handle, and inscribed with the same leaf emblem as the pommel. The blade is flawless, not a nick or scratch to be seen, and looks incredibly sharp. It fits in my hand as if it was made for me, and it feels as light as a feather. I hold my breath while admiring it.
It''s beautiful... What kind of metal is this? It''s too light to be silver. Platinum perhaps? No, platinum should be heavier. There''s no way it''s mithril, right? Yeah, there''s no way... Probably... Still, how did that goblin get something like this? And this emblem, seems like it belonged to a big shot.
I sheathe the dagger and attach the sheath to a belt loop on the left side of my jeans. I try drawing it, and it''s easy to reach and comes out smoothly. I search the cavern once more, but find nothing of interest.
Now then, if I clear this place out I could turn it into a temporary base. There''s clean water and a fruit tree nearby, and I''d feel a lot safer here than inside a tree... I wonder why there were so few goblins here? Surely this wasn''t a whole tribe. Were they kicked out? There''s not much here so I doubt they''ve been here for long.
Bracing myself, I gather up the stained, sticky, smelly hides that were the mages bedding, and carry them outside of the cave. Since I can''t currently do much, I jump dump them on the ground and head back inside to the first cavern and start removing the garbage lying around in there, dumping it on top of the hides outside. Once I''ve removed everything I look at the pile.
Sure wish I could use fire magic to get rid of this stuff... Wait, I did learn fire magic from killing the mage. Too bad he didn''t leave any convenient magic books for me. Well, let''s just do some testing. First, do I need to learn to feel my mana?
I sit down cross legged in the second cavern of the cave and close my eyes. It smells, but I''ll put up with it for now. I breathe deeply and focus on myself, trying to feel anything different inside my body. After an hour with no progress, I start feeling frustrated, and just as I''m about to give up, I notice that there''s a pressure just below my navel. I focus all my attention there and the feeling gets stronger. It feels like something is pulsing under my skin. I continue focusing on it, and the feeling gradually grows stronger, though it''s not unpleasant. Then suddenly, I can somehow ''see'' a swirling purple ball in my mind. I try to touch it with my mind and it ripples. I try to pull on it, and a small string of it stretches out from the ball.
Is this mana? It feels nice...
My thought is proven in the next moment when...
| Learned Skill: Mana Control 1 (0/25). |
| Mana Control |
| Allows one to freely control their own mana. As the skill level increases, the amount of mana you can control as well as the speed of control increase. |
| Learned Skill: Mana Perception 1 (0/25). |
| Mana Perception |
| Allows one to perceive the surrounding mana. The colours represent the different properties of mana. As the skill level increases, the range of perception extends. This skill can be controlled by ones'' will. |
|
I open my eyes and my world is suddenly filled with swirls of coloured energy. It makes me feel dizzy for a moment but I simply think that I don''t want to see it, and it disappears. I then think that I only want to see the mana inside living things. It works, upon looking down I can see my own ball of mana. I stand up and walk outside. The trees and plants around me have small amounts of brown mana swirling inside them, but since it''s nice to look at and not enough to affect my view, I leave it like that. The perception range appears to be around ten metres currently, but it''s supposed to increase with the skill level.
This is great! When the skill level gets higher I should be able to see enemies coming even through most obstacles. Now it''s time to try using magic. Since my fire magic is level 2 I should probably start there.
I return to the caves'' deepest cavern. I close my eyes and focus on the ball of mana in my body, then raising my left hand, I will the mana to move to the tip of my index finger. A small stream starts to stretch out from the ball, up through my chest and arm, eventually reaching my fingertip. I then imagine a candle-like flame on the tip of my finger. I open my eyes while maintaining the image. It seems to be a success.
| Learned Skill: Chantless 1 (0/25). |
| Chantless |
|
This skill improves ones'' ability to use magic without a chant, as well as reducing the penalties associated with it.
Normal Penalty: 200% Mana Consumption, 50% Spell Power.
Current Penalty: 190% Mana Consumption, 55% Spell Power.
|
|
Damn. Thats''s a pretty harsh penalty. I definitely need to max this skill out as soon as I can to lower the penalty. Still, I never thought magic would be so easy. I suppose it''s because I already have the skill, and it''s even level two. I guess it''s grinding time.
I will the flame on my finger to disappear, and it does. Checking my status reveals that I used forty mana, leaving me with 1060/1100.
Methinks it''s skill grinding time! Yeehaw!
This time I try making a ball of fire above my palm. This one consumes thirty-eight mana. It seems to cost the same as the candle-flame, with the chantless skill reducing it by 2. I will this one to go out as well. Next I attempt to make a ball of fire in both hands. It takes a lot more concentration, but around a minute later I manage to do it.
I continue to create fireballs in both hands and extinguish them. After doing so another five times...
| Mana Control has leveled up to 2 (3/50). |
| Mana Perception has leveled up to 2 (3/50). |
| Chantless has leveled up to 2 (2/50). |
|
Another four times...
| Fire Magic has leveled up to 3 (5/100). |
|
I think I''ll leave Fire Magic at level 3 for now. It''s not going to be overly useful for combat in a forest, and level 3 should be enough for cooking and light. I should train earth. Hopefully I''ll be able to use it to make tools if I get the level high enough. Perhaps I can even remodel the cave a little. The question is... How do I train earth?
I exit the cave, deciding soil should be easier to manipulate than stone. I sit and place my hand against the ground, and will mana through it while picturing a needle of earth rising in front of me. It works, but the needle is a lot smaller than I imagined, likely due to my low skill level and mana control. I try again, this time sending mana through both hands. The spike is larger than the first one. I repeat this once more...You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.
| Earth Magic has leveled up to 2 (4/50). |
|
Seeing that this method is effective, I continue casting spikes with both hands. After this skill level up, the spikes are larger and casting requires less focus. Two casts later...
| Mana Control leveled up to 3 (4/100). |
| Mana Perception leveled up to 3 (4/100). |
| Chantless leveled up to 3 (3/100). |
|
Then after five more casts...
| Earth Magic leveled up to 3 (3/100). |
|
I decide to take a break and go pick some apples. While I walk, I observe mana in the plantlife around me. My perception range is now thirty metres. A group of stronger mana signatures suddenly enter my range and move to surround me. I count five of them. Unlike me, the mana seems to flow throughout their bodies, and based on their shapes, they appear to be dogs, or, more likely, wolves.
I draw my shiny new dagger and move so my back it to a tree before they can completely surround me. Probably realising that I''ve noticed them, they stop trying to hide and surround me. Four of them look roughly a metre tall at the shoulder, they are coming towards me from the sides. The one directly in front however, it as least half again as large. They stop a few metres away, and I stand there, dagger at the ready, waiting for them to make the first move, wondering how I''m going to get out of this one.
Here I was beginning to thing there were only goblins in this forest.
An idea comes to mind, but it''s something I haven''t tried before. Nonetheless, if I don''t do something I''m going to die. Keeping my guard up, I will mana towards my feet, through my shoes and into the ground, and imagine two earth spikes impaling the wolves to my left. Amazingly it works, but fails to kill them. Still, it manages to wound them and takes their attention off me for a while. At the same moment, the two wolves on the right leap at me. I move towards them as well, desperately swinging my dagger at the nearest ones throat. I watch in disbelief as my dagger slices through its neck almost effortlessly, half severing its head. I quickly regain my senses as I notice the next one about to bite my own throat. I tuck my chin down just as its jaws close. It hurts less than expected, and I don''t seem to be bleeding much. I throw an uppercut at its stomach and it lets go, only to meet its demise as my dagger plunges into skull from the side.
At this time the leader, having seen me kill two members of its pack, moves towards me. It''s seems angry that its weak prey had suddenly shown claws. The other two were almost recovered so I had to kill the leader quickly. I swung my dagger at its neck as it leapt at me, but it somehow managed to turn its body slightly in midair, causing me to miss, and then its jaws clamped down on my shoulder. This time it hurts more, but I can still bear it. I stabbed my dagger into its side. It yelped, but didn''t let go. I kept stabbing it in the side until it let go and fell weakly to the ground, unable to move. I quickly turn to the other two wolves, who had finally recovered we just about to come at me, but froze upon seeing their alpha defeated. While they were hesitating, I created two more earth spikes under them. These ones stuck true just as I''d imagined and impaled them through the throat.
I stood there for a moment, covered in blood, surveying the carnage. A transparent screen appeared. I fainted.
I woke a few minutes later, completely healed. Looking around, I almost fainted again from sensory overload. I moved my eyes to the screen in front of me.

I sat there for almost half an hour, trying to adjust to the flood of information assaulting me. It was like a whole new world, and it was overwhelming. I could see and hear every tiny thing within about ten metres, smell things I''d never smelled before. Even the feeling of the air touching my skin was so much clearer.
Damn... I need a bath. I REEK! Wonder if I can make one with magic soon...
After adjusting enough to get on with things, I stood up, slightly unsteady on my feet. Looking at the bodies of the wolves around me, I though I should attempt to butcher them. Sadly I had nothing to tie them up with to drain the blood, so I likely wouldn''t be able to eat the meat.
Starting with the wolf that lost half its head, I cut its head the rest of the way off, and start trying to skin it. It doesn''t go very well. I end up with an unusable hide, full of holes. But it wasn''t a waste...
| Learned Skill: Dismantling 1 (19/25) |
| Dismantling |
| Improves your knowledge of dismantling techniques and anatomy. |
|
After absorbing the knowledge that flooded my head, I start on the next wolf. It''s a lot easier after absorbing the knowledge from the skill. I end up with a passable hide this time.
| Dismantling has leveled up to 2 (14/50) |
|
More knowledge appears in my head, and after absorbing it, I go to the third wolf. This time the hide is nearly perfect. I move on to the last of the normal wolves. This hide would be flawless if not for the two holes made by earth spikes.
| Dismantling has leveled up to 3 (4/100) |
|
More knowledge on dismantling... Now for the big one. I''m extra careful with this one. It''s not any different to the normal wolves, just larger, and the hide is tougher, but that''s no problem for my dagger. This one would also be perfect if not for the five stab wounds in its side.
While working, I also retrieved some shiny stones from their corpses. My new dismantling knowledge tells me that these are magic stones. Apparently they are the source of mana for monsters, and the reason that mana was moving through their whole bodies when I saw them with mana perception. I use earth magic to create a hole, collect all the meat and organs in the hole and then use fire magic to burn them, before covering the ashes. Looking at the pile of hide, bones and magic stones, I wonder how to transport them to the cave. My earth magic isn''t up to the task of making a wheelbarrow.
Guess I''ll just have to carry them. I might need to make a few trips. First though, I''m starving after all that. APPLES!
I jog the rest of the way to the apple tree, eat a few, and pick some more for later, then jog back to where I left my spoils. I carry the magic stones and bones first, since I have now idea how to tan hides, so they''re the least important right now. I leave them in the back room of the cave and return for the hides. Nothing eventful happens during transportation.
With my now heightened sense of smell, the cave is nearly unbearable, but the pile of junk I left outside is worse. I once again make a hole with earth magic, put the junk in, burn it, and cover the hole. I jog to the lake to drink some water and give myself a quick wash, trying to reduce my odour.
Tomorrow, I really need to learn wind magic so I can air out that cave, and then water so I don''t have to come back to the lake. Since my other two magics are level 3, I guess I''ll aim for that with them as well for now...
Feeling mentally exhausted after everything that happened today, I return to the cave, start a fire, placing the hides around it in the hope that they''ll dry and I can at least use them as bedding or something, and then I find a relatively comfortable spot close to the cave entrance and quickly fall asleep.
Info
It was mentioned in the comments that the MC was struggling too much against weak enemies, and that I should clarify how powerful he and his opponents are. Also, there was a question about the experience listed after level.
The numbers in brackets after he levels up are inded (Current Exp/Next Level Exp). His inheritor class has a fast growth rate, which I haven''t explained yet, thus the low requirements. Firstly, there will be Fast, Normal and Slow growth rate classes, which will determine the exp required to level up. Basically, Fast is Current Level*10 for the next level, normal will be *20 and slow will probably be *40. This may seem low, but the max level for each class is 100, so to max a fast growth class requires a total of 49,500 exp. For a normal person without the MC''s exp growth, this would take a lot of time considering a regular goblin gives 4 base exp. The wolves would give 20, 30 for the alpha. So it would take a long time for a normal person to reach level 100, even with a fast growth class, and then they''d meet the requirements for an advanced class, with a normal growth rate. Slow growth rate will most likely be Hybrids like Paladin or Battlemage that require two advanced classes to unlock, but I haven''t come up with these ones yet.Stolen novel; please report.
In regards to him stuggling with weaklings, I agree that the female goblins were too weak to break his arm, so I edited that fight a bit. The wolves however, were strong enough to hurt him. He wasn''t in much danger of dying, but he didn''t have time to check his status during the fight, so he doesn''t know that.
To compare them, his stats were 110 at the time. The normal wolves would be roughly: 60 str, 60 dex, 80 agi, 40 end, and the alpha would be around 80 str/dex, 100 agi, 60 end. Weaker than the MC, but still able to hurt him. Goblins stats would be in the 10-20 range, with the mage at 25-50, with high int and wis.
I''m not sure how I''ll handle this in the future, as I''m reluctant to give him appraisal... There are no surprises when you know the enemies skills and attributes, and it''s really overused. I''m open to suggestions.
Planning
Much as I''m enjoying writing this, I''ve just been making it up as I go with no idea what comes next. I''m not satsfied with my work, and it being my first time writing a story is no excuse. This was initially going to be a lightheated romp of wish fulfillment that''s light on the details, but I''m craving more depth now. As such, I''ve decided to spend some time to plan out a rough storyline and design the world. Geography, history, culture, religion, politics, monsters, classes, skills, mechanics, etc. My naming sense is terrible though, so don''t expect originality on that front. Once I''m satisfied with with the details, I''ll likely rewrite the first few chapters before I start releasing again.Reading on this site? This novel is published elsewhere. Support the author by seeking out the original.
Thus, there won''t be any chapters for a while, though I might post occasional progress reports to let people know the project isn''t dead. Even if nobody cares.
Update
So, I made a very rough world map in about 2 minutes in paint. Easy when there are only two continents and a few islands.
I''ve planned out 4 class tiers, Basic, Advanced, Master and Hybrid. Class skills not entirely worked out but the names and attribute growth are done.
I''ve decided to make int, wis and magic are also useful to physical classes. Int increases reaction and processing speed, wis increases perception (makes it easier to see attacks coming and notice details/weaknesses), and magic, which is newly added, will increase magic resistance as well as magic power.
Kingdoms have been named along with their capital cities and some brief info of each. Races are done, MC will be a unique variant of a human, with a stronger racial skill which will help him level up, but he won''t have crazy stat growth any more (still gonna end up several times stronger than everyone else of course). Incompatible racial skills will now be converted to inheritance points, which can then be applied to other skills to level them. This way he can max any skills from bosses or rare monsters later. I also gave him appraisal. Couldn''t think of a better way to do it.
I''ve changed the whole attribute system, there are now three values for each attribute. I think it''s pretty easy to understand, but some people just can''t get their heads around numbers (like my mother). The MC will no longer have his accelerated growth skill. It was a big stretch getting such an op skill from a juvenile goblin. The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
I''ve created the gods of the world, with some history of the gods, and changed how he arrives in the world. He''ll no longer arrive in a forest, and he won''t be fighting small fries. In fact he won''t be fighting at all for the first few chapters. Sorry for people who didn''t want the start to change... I think it''s better the new way.
Hmm... That''s about it I think? World is made, just need to flesh out the kingdoms. Need to make the class skills, then classes will be done. Key characters, monsters and dungeons left to do. Tempted to make those up as I go, but I''ll at least get some basics done. I''m itching to write though. I''ve rewritten the prologue and first chapter already, though the prologue didn''t really change, he just arrived in a new place, and chapter one is an info dump... Not gonna put them up until I have 5 chapters done.
I have some class names I''m not really happy with if anyone has suggestions for them.
Destroyer (Tier 3 Offensive Fighter, Fighter>Warrior>Destroyer). I think this is from Luna Online... Fighter also has a tank line, Fighter>Knight>Guardian, if anyone cares.
The whole unarmed combat line... Disciple>Master>Grandmaster. I can live with this one though.
Hawkeye (Tier 3 Hunter. Hunter>Ranger>Hawkeye)
Deadeye (Hybrid of necromancer and Ranger. Makes Bone arrows with magic that apply curses/debuffs)
That''s all for now.
