 Prologue - part1

    Elves. A very proud long-lived race known to have close connections with the nature. They live in an isolated community and rarely make contact with other intelligent races.


    That''s what the stereotype is. But as would expect, there are those who don''t follow it.


    For example, Feinerena Horekenez, or Fei for short, is an elf girl born merely ten years ago, an infant in elf years. Naturally, everyone knew her as the little ball of energy, who kept running around and causing trouble.


    The reason was simple, her mother died when she was a baby and her father worked as an important council member, meaning he had very little spare time for her. But little Fei sought attention. And the simplest way to get it, was to cause trouble for others. She ended up being lectured every other day about her behavior, but instead of discouraging, it had the opposite effect instead. She kept on wreaking havoc everywhere she went just to be noticed by somebody.


    However, everything would change one day...


    It all started when Fei doused a guard''s head in blue paint and ran away. She managed to lose him and hide in the tree tops.


    "Heh... he won''t find me here..."


    A mischievous grin situated itself on that childish face as Fei watched the ground from behind a leaf cover.


    But instead of the guard marching through there, two other adults did. The first one was Fei''s father, Renguloron, and the other one was one of the four grand elven magicians. His name... Fei didn''t remember.


    Seeing those two, Fei did her best to erase her presence and listened to their conversation.


    "Predict the future, you say?" Fei''s father asked in surprise.


    "Indeed... I will continue studying it, but that''s what it seems like right now." The magician confirmed his intents whole stroking his beard.

    "No... well..." The magician sighed. "Unfortunately, I could only see few hours into the future at most. I''m not even sure if it''s possible to look further than a day or two..." He shook his head in resignation.


    "...is that so. That''s very unfortunate indeed..." His excitement vanished in an instant.


    But there was someone else whose interest didn''t falter at all. The one, who silently leaped through the tree tops, following and listening to them.


    "Oho.... this sounds fun!"


    This would mark the day Fei made a fated decision. She will sneak into that magician''s home and look through his research on that magic!


    Pranking and angering adults wasn''t Fei''s only hobby. In fact, she has always been fascinated by magic. Especially magic that would help elevate her pranks to a whole another level. Predicting her victim''s movements and setting up traps for them? Yes please.


    The elven village is like one big family. Their doors aren''t locked and anyone can enter anywhere. But despite this tradition, almost no thefts occur.


    Almost.


    It''s at the times like these, when a new elf is born, that this tradition fails.


    "Greater light magic, whatever... dream magic, know that already... ah, prophecy magic... is this it?" Fei picked up the paper and carefully read through it.


    "Yes! This is it! Perfect!" Filled with delight, she rolled the paper into a scroll and snuck back out.

 Prologue - part2

    With the scroll in hand, Fei slipped out of the magician''s home and made her way back home. Luckily, since her father wasn''t home, she didn''t have to worry about waking anyone and exposing herself.


    "Now then..." She jumped on top of her bed with the scroll in hand and began studying. It wasn''t too long until she realized this was a little too advanced for her.


    "Ugh... soul link... fate manipulation... what is all of this?" Fei realized that the shiny new prank upgrade mechanism will take a bit of time to learn. It was frustrating... But in the end, she was still an elf. The patience of elves cannot be compared to other short-lived races. Even the deviant Fei had mountains of patience. After all, if she didn''t, she would have never learned any magic.


    "Hmm... where did I put it?" Meanwhile, the victim was searching for the stolen item. Though... he didn''t even imagine it could have been stolen. Not even after days of looking for it. "Did I accidentally toss it...? That can''t be..." Needless to say, the poor old magician never found the document and was forced to make a new one in the end. But he wouldn''t have to start from scratch thanks to his prior experiences. A man with more experience is always more capable.


    Or is he...?


    In some cases, deep knowledge can divert you from seeing the obvious. A solution that you would never think of due to the decades of experience. And that''s why, the most revolutionary ideas come from young minds.


    Since the day she stole the document, Fei has been analyzing it and doing experiments. The original method was something Fei got grasp on within half a year. But she soon realized just how inefficient it was and tried to come up with an alternative. In her spare time, of course. She wouldn''t sacrifice her pranking time to study a way to improve her pranks. That would be putting the cart before the horse.

    In the meantime, she has already found a way to incorporate the prophecy magic into her everyday life. Although she could only look a few hours into the future, that still wasn''t something to scoff at.


    Although... there was one ''problem'' with it. It was too accurate. Even if she tried to avoid the unfavorable events, they still ended up happening. She only managed to change up minor details.


    But even then, life went on and Fei continued to improve the technique. Until one day...


    "Wait... why don''t I just insert it into a dream?" After a four years of passive research, Fei came up with something way easier and more efficient. All while the original researcher of this topic forgot about it after getting stuck. The main problem she found, was that being conscious while looking into the future limited how far she could look. But, of course, it''s hard to do anything while one is unconscious. Unless... she could make use of dream magic and insert the vision into her dreams.


    Still, combining magic isn''t simple. It took her two extra years before she could finally do some practical experiments without fearing something would go wrong. Upon reaching that point though, her excitement skyrocketed. Just how far will she able to see? Up till now, she could only see what would be for dinner or who would lecture her later that day.


    With a smile on her face, she lied down on her bed after preparing everything and went to sleep...

 Prologue - part3

    The image of a young elf with glittering silver hair appeared in front of Fei. In contrast to her hair, she wore black leather armor and shining red gauntlets. Despite the unfamiliar equipment, Fei recognized that person... It was herself.


    She stood on an open field with rocks scattered all around. The figure of ''Fei'' was accompanied by several people. All of them seemed to be human and not elves.


    Together, they were facing off against... something. A gigantic monster emanating dark aura towered over them. It was almost in a shape of an egg, if it weren''t for the spikes covering its entire body and two ominous arms protruding at its base. Its ghastly face stretched all across one side of the whole body. It had two empty eye sockets and giant mouth in a constant expression of horror.


    "Regroup! We can still do this!"


    ''Fei'' yelled at her allies to encourage them, but their response was weak. They didn''t want to keep going. And that wasn''t surprising. Everyone, including ''Fei'', was visibly worn down and many suffered some injuries. But more importantly, half of their forces have already been wiped out and the monster still hasn''t shown any signs of weakening.


    "Gh! Then, I''ll go by myself!"


    Ignoring the yells of her allies telling her to stop, ''Fei'' charged at the mass of darkness. The monster attacked by swiping its arm, but Fei skillfully jumped over it while extending her arm toward the monster. Two seconds later, a lightning struck the monster''s other arm. But the creature didn''t even flinch. Instead, it used the time Fei needed to recover and vomited black ooze out of its gaping mouth. Her vision filled with darkness and-


    "Guaaah!!!" Fei woke up in an instant. Sweat covering her entire body. She held her forehead and hyperventilated. Her heartbeat didn''t show any signs of slowing down.

    Fei remembered what she did before going to sleep. There''s no mistake. That was her future. She is going to die fighting a horrific monster from hell.


    Realizing this, her body shivered.


    After calming down, she crawled out of her bed and set out to find help. Even though she felt completely drained because of the magic she just used, she still managed to limp her way to her father''s room and told him everything. She didn''t even care about admitting she stole an important document few years back. This was serious.


    But...


    "So, you stole something important and now you are making excuses? Looks like you will need another lecture."


    Having been tricked by other ''serious'' stuff, Fei''s father learned to not believe whatever she says. Especially when it sounds just straight up ridiculous.


    "N-no! I''m serious father!"


    But her helpless cries were in vain. He merely lectured her as usual and then ignored her.


    Realizing it was pointless, she went outside and asked others for help. The neighbors, the teachers, the elders... But nobody took her seriously. Not the adults nor the younger elves. For the first time in her life, Fei realized just how alone she was. Even if she is doomed, nobody will help her.


    Why? Even though her life was in danger, why doesn''t anyone care?


    From that day on, Fei ceased to prank people. She stayed in bed, thinking about her inevitable demise. She was scared.


    But even then, nobody took notice of her unusual behavior. Some ignored her and others thought it was just another elaborate prank of hers. Nobody wanted to help her.

 Prologue - part4

    How far into the future was it? That was the one question Fei wanted an answer to.


    The future self she saw was like a completely different person. She wore extravagant equipment and used magic she has never heard of. This is not something that''s going to happen soon. It will take years... maybe decades. There''s no doubt about that. But... the future self didn''t seem to age at all. Her figure looked exactly the same as it is now. How is that possible?


    Despite this strange fact, Fei still figured it must have been the far future. In other words, there''s a chance she can change it.


    With the original prophecy magic, only minor details could be changed. But perhaps that was because she could only see the near future. Perhaps... if it''s further away, it will be possible to avert? Surely... it has to be....


    The question was, what steps does she need to take for the future to change?


    She didn''t know what that monster is or where it will come from. No idea if there''s a way to avoid that encounter. So, the only way to change the future was to get stronger. Strong enough to not be killed by it. Strong enough to defeat it. Whining and crying won''t help anyone.


    And so, Fei buried herself in books. Although reluctant, she tossed away her pranking carrier and studied magic seriously this time. Her goal was the absurd magic she saw herself use in the vision. Seriously... Causing lightning bolt to fall from a sky? Outrageous. Only gods could do that.

    But alas, she didn''t have much to go off of. Even if she knew what the final product would look like, the process was unknown. And thus, she was forced to focus other magics for the time being. Air magic, light magic and despite hesitating at first, prophecy magic. She didn''t like the idea of experiencing it again, but she needed to know more details about the future.


    As time went by, the adults forgot about the prankster of the past. But even then, they wouldn''t take her seriously when she told them about the future she saw. She was just a kid after all. Kids always have strange ideas.


    Twenty years went by. Twenty years of nothing but studying magic. All just to avoid the frightening future. In that time, Fei used the prophecy magic again several times. In fact, she has gotten into the habit of using it once per year to see if she managed to change anything yet.


    But... for some reason, the magic always showed the same scenario. The one where she battled the monster. It was almost as if... there was no further future to look at.


    Needless to say, every use of the prophecy magic had the same end result. That is, Fei abruptly waking up and shaking in her boots as her sweaty face went pale.


    But hope still remained. Since the first dream, the future self managed to repel the monster''s breath with some sort of barrier and continue fighting while using other unknown magics. Fei could feel it. She can avert the dreadful future. If she just keeps this up, she will survive!

 Prologue - part5

    While Fei studied magic every day, she noticed an oddity. Her body stopped aging. She was stuck looking like sixteen year old.


    It must have been since she first used the prophecy magic. That would certainly explain why she looked the same in the future, but it would also raise more questions. Why did she stop aging? Did the magic have some unknown side effects?


    Still, Fei wasn''t too worried about this. She couldn''t mind the little things when her life was in danger. Surely, it meant nothing...


    That, however, didn''t apply to the other elves. They also noticed this strange occurrence and unlike Fei, they took it seriously. Most thought of it as a bad omen and some even went as far as calling Fei a ''cursed child''.


    Once again, Fei became the center of scorn. But being used to this already, she didn''t mind it.


    Unbeknownst to her, the village elders planned on getting rid of her. They couldn''t straight up kill her, but they refused to let her keep living the village. After all, who knows what a cursed child, that kept telling them about a monster in the future, would do to their village?


    Meanwhile, Fei rigorously prepared for the ''big day''. Twenty years after the first prophecy, the prophesied future changed a bit.


    Unlike the first time, ''Fei'' managed to protect herself from the monster''s breath with some sort of barrier. And after that, she continued running around and dodging while strangely moving one of her hands about, possibly using another unknown magic. Somehow, she caused one of the monster''s spikes to shatter, which made it release an ear-piercing shriek. And while stunned by the loud sound, ''Fei'' got crushed by another one of its attacks.

    This was the version Fei got stuck on. No matter what she did, the next year''s prophecy would stay the same. Did she hit a wall? Is it impossible to safe herself after all...?


    Such thoughts sometimes found their way into her head. But never for too long. She was determined to find a way to save herself.


    Over the years, Fei realized something important. These ''rocks'' scattered around in her future vision, were in fact ruins of buildings. Not elven buildings usually made of wood, but human buildings. The battle is going to happen in the middle of a human city. And it does make sense. Most of her allies were humans after all.


    But... is that why future Fei is so determined to defeat it right then and there even though she could retreat? Why? Why care so much about humans if not even her own kin shows her any empathy? It makes no sense.


    And does that mean she will travel to a human city in the future? What if she just stays in the elven village? Will she avoid the disaster just by doing that? That would be too simple...

 Prologue - part6

    Three more years went by and the village elders finally came up with a suitable solution. The method to get rid of the, now thirty-nine year old, Fei.


    "You have been chosen as the exchange student. You will be leaving in two weeks." That''s what her father suddenly told her one day. In order to strengthen connections with the neighboring human kingdom, she will be sent there as an exchange student.


    "W-what do you mean?! I can''t go to a human city!" But Fei knew this was bad. If she travels to a human city, she will be one step closer to fulfilling her prophecy. And she didn''t want that.


    "Feinerena, you have already been chosen. You cannot refuse this." Her father said in a cold voice. When her father got like that, Fei couldn''t object. She could only clench her fists and prepare for what''s to come.


    Besides than Fei, there were seven other elves chosen for this ''exchange programme''. But they wouldn''t all go to the same place. Instead, they were all sent to different schools around the country. Fei''s school was going to be Saint Rina''s school located in Khali o''mare city. An average school in an average city.

    Before departing, Fei had two weeks to say goodbyes to friends and to pack up everything she needed. But of course, there weren''t many people to say goodbye to. Just her father.


    As for the luggage, she grabbed some clothes and some books. One can never have too many books.


    The last thing she needed, was her spirit crystal. Without it, she would have a hard time using the prophecy magic. Truth be told, the process was exhausting even with the crystal. Without it, she might collapse or even go comatose.


    Two weeks passed like nothing. It was time to leave her birthplace for the first time. Fei never had to leave the village in the past fifty-one years of her life. She never even went out to hunt with the other elves. Her life was all about studying. But now... she had no other choice.


    Since their destination differed, multiple carriages have been prepared for all the exchange students. Fei ended up in one with another student, three elven guards, two human escorts and a human driver. The journey was expected to take about three days.


    After loading their baggage, they set off.
