Prologue: Scholarship exam
Modern Earth, day of 20XX, Summer.
A young student could be seen walking down a road filled with people. It was morning yet different yells could be heard as he went past them, it was bustling with activity. It was the market.
"Hey kid! Here to buy some fresh fish? How many kilos do you want?"
A yell sounded beside him. It was a fish merchant.
He smiled and shaked his head then he walked past the fish merchant and continued along.
A yell with almost the same message could be heard but this time from a beef merchant.
''Sigh! I''m not really here to buy anything.'' He said in his mind.
As he walked about a hundred meters from the market. He asked someone for directions "Do you know where this school is located?"
That person pointed in a direction. He nodded and said his thanks, then continued walking.
After walking for 10 minutes, he arrived in an area enclosed by high walls. It was his school. Although he was enrolled here, it was his first time coming here. The one who enrolled him was his father. Who only paid the first month for his tuition.
''Sigh!'' He sighed. Life was really unfair, wealthy people could send their kids here, and some chose to fool around and waste the money.
He walked for a bit and arrived at a gate. There were many students that went inside the gate, but most of them went in by riding vehicles.
At the gate, a guard was standing there. When the guard saw him, the guard asked "Where''s your Identification card?"
The guard asked for his identification card because he wasn''t wearing one.
"I just got enrolled on this school and I still haven''t received my Identification card." He said. He was not yet able to get his identification card from the school.
"Have you paid it already? Let me see the receipt!" The guard said.
The student shaked his head.
The guard looked at him and asked "What''s your name?"
"Yong Min!" Yong Min said.
"Yong Min, go inside and go to the guidance office and sign up for a scholarship. I can see that you''re from poor family like me!. Once you become a scholar, you can have the identification card for free and depending on your performance, even your tuition could be free." The guard said. He said this based on his observations. Yong Min was, although wearing a uniform, it was kind of tattered. It was only patched up again to be usable. The guard also came from a poor family that''s why he said this.
"Thank you!" Yong Min bowed to the guard and said his thanks.
''He is a good person! I will repay him in the future if all goes well in my studies.'' Yong Min thought.
Yong Min was from a poor family that farms in a mountain area far away from here. His parents worked hard to send him to school. As he went inside, he followed the guards instruction and went inside a building. It was the guidance office. There was only a single person inside, a female student.
"Welcome and Good morning!" The female student greeted.
"Good morning!" Yong Min greeted back.
"I''m the working student assigned here. What are you here for? Are you here to take a scholarship exam?" The female student said. She already knew what Yong Min was here for, as she saw Yong Min''s attire.
"Yes!" Yong Min nodded as he thought ''So she''s also s scholar.''
"I''m sorry but class already started and we won''t be entertaining scholarship examinees right now. The schedule for the exams already ended." The female student pointed to a poster pasted in a wall.
Yong Min looked over and read the poster:
"Scholarship Exam hosted by Rooster Academy! Exam date: December 1, 20XX - June 15, 20XX"
Yong Min sighed, he was really unlucky. Today was June 16, 20XX.
"Thank you!" Yong Min bowed and thanked the female student, then turned around to leave.
As he neared the door, an old woman went inside the building, she was already in her 50''s. As she saw Yong Min, the female student wanted to greet her but she waved her hand, she smiled and said to Yong Min "Are you here to take the exam? But it has already ended."
Yong Min looked at her and bowed "Greetings Madam! I''m Yong Min! I came from Catmon Mountain and enrolled at this school, and then found out about this scholarship exam just now. It''s a pity that I came a day late." Yong Min said. He was respectful as he felt that this old woman was an elder of this school. Although he wasn''t able to take the exam, he is still a student at this school.
"Li Juan! Go and get a test paper." The old woman said to the female student.
"Yes! Right away!" Li Juan went to a table and opened a drawer, taking out a test paper inside.
"Madam Ping, this is the last test paper we have." Li Juan said as she handed the test paper to Madam Ping.
"Come and sit there." Madam Ping beckoned Yong Min with her hand as she pointed at a table.
Yong Min received the test paper and sat on the table.
As he was answering the test paper, Li Juan looked thoughtfully at Yong Min and smiled.
"What a lucky guy to be given special treatment by Madam Ping."
Although Yong Min was poor and was wearing tattered uniform, Li Juan didn''t mind it, as she believed that a person''s worth would be seen through his effort and not his origins.
Madam Ping was the Principal of Rooster Academy. Although she was the principal she didn''t want to stay in the principal''s office as it boring there. Here in the guidance office, she could still reprimand those student''s that was sent to her office.
Hours quickly passed, the test paper contained 500 questions to be answered inside 8 hours. Although it was to be answered that long, Yong Min finished it exactly at noon.
Madam Ping received Yong Min''s test paper and saw his expression. Although Yong Min was smiling, his smile was weird, it was close to laughing.
"Go quickly, you''re already absent for half a day at school''s first day!" Madam Ping interrupted Yong Min''s happy mood.
"Yes, Madam Ping! Thank you so much for giving me this chance!" Yong Min bowed, he was thanking Madam Ping for her generosity.
"It''s not confirmed that you''re gonna become a scholar yet. I still have to see your result! Go now!" Madam Ping said as she smiled. He found Yong Min funny. Madam Ping didn''t have any children and he liked Yong Min''s attitude.
Yong Ming thanked Madam Ping again and turned around to greet Li Juan farewell when he didn''t see her, he turned around and exited the building. He then went inside another building by asking a student for directions. He arrived at a room.
Room B-201, The B from the room came from Bunzel, the building''s name, and 201 came from its floor level and number of room, second floor, room one.
The moment he went inside, students were already sitting and eating. He remembered it was already lunch. He then exited the room as he found it tempting to stay inside. Everyone was eating, and he don''t even have money to buy his lunch. He was currently living in a mountain, at the back of the market, where a lake was luckily situated, there, he takes his bath daily. For his food, he forages for it in the mountain.
Once lunch ended, lessons started. He listened attentively and after school he went home to his little home in the mountain.
Chapter 1: Dormitory Room
The mountain was abundant with plants and trees. This is why Yong Min chose to stay here, although this mountain was owned by the government, no one really goes here.
When he arrived it was already in the late afternoon, the sun was already setting.
In the mountain, a small shabby shed could be seen, this was his small house. Its wall was made of sticks tied together and its roof was made of leaves. The walls had leaves pasted on it to act as cover against the gap between the sticks, so that the inside couldn¡¯t be looked up from the outside and more importantly to act as shield against the cold night.
Yong Min then opened the shed and the inside could be seen.
Inside the shed was a small bed made of what seems like hay stacks. It took up almost one-third of the shed¡¯s inner area. On the bed was a bag, filled with his clothes and towel. The rest of the area was occupied by a table. Different things were on the table, hoe, frying pan, a basin, a soup pot, spoon, fork, and a plate. Beside it was a reused notebook. He used this notebook to write things that got him interested or some terms which he does not understand yet.
After seeing the inside in order, Yong Min picked up the hoe and went to the deep parts of the mountain. He was looking for food. After searching for a while, he found some leaves and shoots. A little rummage by the hoe in the soil showed a tuberous root. It was a sweet potato. He immediately dug and took it out. Holding its large root, Yong Min laughed. He quickly ran back to his little shed to prepare the sweet potato.
He took the basin and filled it with lake water placing the sweet potato inside. He gathered some sticks and then started some fire. This fire was kind of special. It was made from the traditional way of creating one. Using two sticks to create friction that could create some sparks added with dry leaves to fire it up. He then used another two sticks as poles and another one as the intersecting stick between the two. He hanged the basin full of sweet potato there.
A satisfied smile bloomed on his face as he sat down waiting for it to be cooked. He took some leaves from a random tree that had big, wide leaves and wrapped the leaves and shoots of the sweet potato inside it. He hanged it above the basin to steam it. The leaves and shoots of sweet potato can be eaten by steaming it.
When it was cooked, Yong Min enjoyed eating the sweet potato. By the time he finished, it was already night time. The stars could clearly be seen in the sky. He suddenly thought of his parents and how they were doing. This thought lasted for a moment then he sighed.
He looked at the basin and there were still some sweet potato left. Some ideas quickly floated on his mind as he saw the sweet potatoes.
¡®I can make some money out of this.¡¯ He thought.
Yong Min quickly went down the mountain and went to the market to sell his cooked sweet potato. After he arrived at the market, he placed his basin on an elevated platform that was currently empty and shouted ¡°Freshly cooked sweet potatoes for sale for only 10 coins.¡±
A lot of people were passing by him, some were buying and some were bargaining if they could buy it more cheaply, as his sweet potato was different in sizes. He could only smile when they said this. It was really in different sizes, so he couldn¡¯t do anything about it.
After selling for a while, he looked down at his basin and saw that there was only one sweet potato left. He shouted with energy while smiling ¡°Sweet potato, only one left for 6 coins!¡±
After that no one came to buy his sweet potato, so he decided to pack up and go back to the shed. He counted his money. After counting, He couldn¡¯t help but smile, this was really good business. He made 48 coins just from selling the sweet potato he found.
As he was going to get the basin after cleaning the area he just used, a young woman came into his view. As he saw this young woman, he was a bit dumbfounded and couldn¡¯t help but asked ¡°Are you here to buy sweet potato?¡±This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. ¡°You could say so!¡± The young woman laughed and said as she picked up the sweet potato from the basin.
¡°Then that¡¯s 6 coins.¡± Yong Min said.
¡°Hmmm! It¡¯s really delicious! Here!¡± The young woman handed Yong Min his 6 coins and said after taking a bite at the sweet potato.
¡°Anyway, Madam Ping has already the result of your exam and she wants you to come to the guidance office tomorrow.¡± She added.
¡°Li Juan, did I pass it or did I fail?¡± Hearing what Li Juan said Yong Min couldn¡¯t help but ask. His future was riding on this, and his family could breathe a little bit more if he had the scholarship.
¡°Just come to the guidance office tomorrow.¡± Li Juan said as she turned around and left. Entering a high class sports car, driven by what seems to be her butler.
¡®I didn¡¯t expect Li Juan to be wealthy! But why was she working as a working student at school?¡¯ Yong Min couldn¡¯t help and ask himself.
After thinking for a while he shook his head and sighed ¡®I shouldn¡¯t think about this kind of things right now!¡¯
After that, he took the basin and went home. Arriving at the shed, he took a worn out towel from his bag and went to the lake to swim for a while.
While swimming he couldn¡¯t help but close his eyes and float in the water as he thought of many things, his family, his future, his exam and a lot of stuffs. After swimming, he quickly dried himself and changed into a set of clothes. He went back straight to the shed and slept.
When dawn came, Yong Min woke up and went to the deep region of the mountain to look for food for his breakfast. He found some wild squash and some nuts. He quickly cooked the squash with nuts and ate it. He had little money so he couldn¡¯t be picky about his food. After eating he went to the lake again to bath and refreshes his mind by the lakes warm and cold water. Then he went and worn his uniform again. He immediately went to school to find out his results.
When Yong Min arrived, it was still around 6-7 am, he noticed that there were no students that had yet to arrive as class¡¯ starts on 8:30 am. As he went past the gate, the guard who told him about the scholarship exam was already there. When he saw Yong Min, he smiled and asked ¡°So, how did it go?¡±
Yong Min smiled back and said respectfully ¡°I don¡¯t know the result yet. I still have to go to the guidance office to know.¡±
When the guard heard this, he smiled and encouraged Yong Min ¡°I know you will pass. Hard work will beat anything out there.¡±
Yong Min nodded and thanked the guard again about yesterday.
The guard shook his head and answered ¡°I only did what¡¯s best, no need to thank me.¡±
After that Yong Min waited till the guidance office would open. He accompanied and chatted with the guard during that time and he came to know many things about the school. After the guidance office opened he went inside and saw a female student inside.
The female student greeted him ¡°Good morning! You must be Yong Min! Madam Ping instructed me to entertain you for a while as she would arrive late.¡±
¡°I am indeed Yong Min.¡± Yong Min nodded and smiled at her.
¡°I am An Yi, a working student.¡± An Yi said.
¡°An Yi, nice to meet you. Could I ask where Li Juan is?¡±Yong Min couldn¡¯t help but ask. Li Juan said that he would know today, but she it seems she didn¡¯t come here.
¡°Miss Li? Miss Li is in her class at the moment.¡± An Yi said.
¡°I see, thank you.¡± Yong Min said.
An Yi only nodded as she started cleaning and arranging things inside the guidance office.
After an hour, Madam Ping arrived.

As Madam Ping saw Yong Min she laughed and beckoned him with her hand to come.
Madam Ping then took out his test result from her bag and said ¡°I¡¯m sorry but you failed the exam!¡±
When Yong Min heard this, his heart sunk. This was his only chance to make some room for his parents to breathe a little but he failed. He clenched his fists and started blaming himself.
When Yong Min was thinking this, Madam Ping started laughing ¡°HAHAHA! Look at that expression you¡¯re making! I was just kidding! You passed with flying colors!¡±
Yong Min became dumbfounded when he heard Madam Ping, she was teasing him.
Madam Ping handed the result to Yong Min so he could see for himself his own results.
When he saw it, he couldn¡¯t help but clenched his fist and shouted while raising both his arms high in the air ¡°Yes! I did it! Yes!¡±
Madam Ping let Yong Min immerse himself in his happiness as she went and sit down on her table and got some papers from her drawer.
¡°Yong Min, come here for a while!¡± Madam Ping said.
¡°Yes!¡± Yong Min immediately came.
¡°Here is a check about the tuition fee that you paid, take it to the school accounting and ask for the refund. Also take this identification card and go to the dormitory and pick the room you want to occupy.¡± Madam Ping said as she handed Yong Min a check and an Identification card which contained Yong Min¡¯s information.
¡°Go to the dormitory and pick a room?¡± Yong Min asked excitedly.
¡°Hmmm? Didn¡¯t you know that if you become a scholar, you need to live in the school dormitory for the duration of your scholarship?¡± Madam Ping said.
¡°I didn¡¯t. But I¡¯m really excited to pick my room!¡± Yong Min truthfully said. He was living in the mountains so it was natural for him to want to live in the dormitory where it was clean and neat.
Madam Ping laughed and said ¡°Then go now and choose your room!¡±
Chapter 2: Strange Symbol
Yong Min quickly bowed and went to the dormitory to choose his room.
With him was the working student he got to talked to a while ago. She was the one who led Yong Min to the dormitory.
When they arrived, someone was already waiting there to guide him in the dormitory. This time it was a male student. As the dormitory of male and female were separated, it was only natural for a male student to guide him.
Before they got in, the female student bade her farewell but before she could turn around and leave, Yong Min asked for her name.
¡°Wang Jing, it means quiet.¡± Wang Jing said as she smiled. Wang Jing on the way here only talked when necessary, and even in the guidance office, she was quiet when Madam Ping and Yong Min joked around.
¡°Wang Jing, thank you!¡± Yong Min nodded his head as he said that.
"Then, see you again." Wang Jing blushed when she said this and left.
Watching Wang Jing''s back, Yong Min could not help but smile. He won''t forget any kind of kindness he got from people and if possible, he would return the kindness back in the future.

Beside him, the male student laughed.
¡°It seems your luck when it comes to girls is extraordinary brother. My name is Sheng Ning, it means victory and quiet.¡± Sheng Ning smiled and said.
¡°Brother Sheng, my name is Yong Min, and may I know what you mean by my luck is extraordinary?¡± Yong Min smiled and asked as he also introduced himself.
¡°Brother Yong, all the girls in this campus are hard to befriend as all of them have their own kind of preferences.¡± Sheng Ning said as he smiled. What he meant by preferences was naturally their choice to interact with wealthy people. Madam Ping already explained Yong Min''s situation to him.

It seems my luck is really good!¡± Yong Min couldn''t help and think of Li Juan, Li Juan actually came from a wealthy family but she still talked to him. He couldn''t help and wonder why that is. He was wearing worn out clothes, but neither did Li Juan and Wang Jing avoided him. He felt his nose turn hot, so he scratched it and laughed.
¡°Anyways brother Yong, let''s get you settled for now.¡± Sheng Ning said as he patted Yong Min''s shoulder. He was really friendly to Yong Min.
They quickly went inside the dormitory; it was a four story building.
Yong Min chose a room in the 4th floor.
It was spacious at least five times the area of his shed. There was even a bathroom, a closet and things that compose a hotel room except there''s no television.
Yong Min nodded as he saw his new room, he was satisfied.
¡°Anyway, where are your things? I''ll help you pack up.¡± Sheng Ning said when he saw that Yong Min seemed satisfied.
¡°Thank you brother Sheng. It''s in the mountain behind the market.¡± Yong Min said.
¡°In the mountain?¡± Sheng Ning asked. His eyes glimmered as he smiled.
¡°In the mountain!¡± Yong Min nodded.
Yong Min and Sheng Ning quickly went to the mountains behind the market. On their way, they talked about a lot of things, even how he searched for food here.
When they arrived Sheng Ning was amazed as he looked at the shed. It looked like it would fall down with a slightly stronger wind. He couldn''t help but be amazed, it was completely different when he shaked it. It was sturdy.
Yong Min hurriedly picked up everything, things that he couldn¡¯t hold; Sheng Ning got it for him.
They quickly went back to the dormitory to place the things inside. After that they went and attended class, the both of them was late.
During lunch, Yong Min lined up and bought a noodle from the cafeteria and accidentally met Li Juan there.
¡°So you¡¯re going to eat noodles.¡± Li Juan said.
¡°This is the only thing I could buy with my money.¡± Yong Min said flatly, although he wanted to eat something more extravagant, his money won¡¯t last long..
¡°Then stand up, I¡¯ll treat you to some good food.¡± Li Juan said,

¡°No, this is sufficient enough.¡± Yong Min answered; he still felt his nose burning from having a girl treat him.
¡°Okay.¡± Li Juan said, she stood up and lined up in the cafeteria.
¡°I want that.¡± Li Juan pointed to some pork chop.
¡°That!¡± she pointed to some spaghetti.
¡°Please get me that one!¡± She pointed to some egg soup.
After that she went back to their table, servers were behind her.
¡°Ughhh! You have some big appetite.¡± Yong Min exclaimed from shock.
¡°You idiot, this is for you!¡± Li Juan said in embarrassment as she rolled her eyes.
¡°¡¡± Yong Min was dumbstruck.
Yong Min was forced to eat those dishes. He and Li Juan talked for a while, before they went back to their own class.
After school when he was on his way to the dormitory, he accidentally ran with Li Juan again.
¡°Are you going to your room now?¡± Li Juan asked.
¡°Yes, I¡¯m going to pick up something and go to the mountains to do something.¡± Yong Min said. He wanted to go and get his basin and hoe to search for wild vegetables again. He wanted to cook some and sell it to earn money.
¡°Mountains? You mean your old home? I went there and saw your little room.¡± Li Juan said, she went there to see for herself, how Yong Min was doing out there. That¡¯s why she knew Yong Min was selling sweet potato in the market.She got curious of him the moment she met him.
¡°I see, so you knew. I¡¯m going back there to look for something to sell again.¡± Yong Min said, he couldn¡¯t really help it, he wanted to earn some money so that he could send some to his parents.

Uncle Wang smiled and nodded his head to Yong Min.
After that they rode the limousine and went to a nearby mall.
¡°Wow!¡± Yong Min couldn¡¯t help but exclaim. It was his first time going in a mall, as he lived on the mountain little did he go to place like this, as his priority was to farm and buy food in the market.
¡°It¡¯s great right? How about you come with me every time I go shopping?¡± Li Juan said without thinking. She got so happy seeing Yong Min¡¯s reaction. She would always come shopping but she was all alone, all her company was Uncle Wang. She wanted Yong Min to accompany her when she goes shopping.
¡°This¡¡± Yong Min didn¡¯t know what to say. He would love to come, but wouldn¡¯t that be awkward, as they were only friends, nothing more, and more than that they were of the opposite sex.
¡°Don¡¯t worry I¡¯d buy you some things too!¡± Li Juan smiled cutely, she was so happy with this idea.
Yong Min didn¡¯t answer yet, but his silent was misinterpreted by Li Juan as an agreement.
Li Juan quickly brought him to the clothes section, the perfume, and to the jewelry section. Li Juan introduced many items to Yong Min, but Yong Min only asked for a white shirt and a jeans, and if alright, a new uniform. It took Yong Min hundreds of courage to say this.
After that, they he went with Li Juan as she tried different dresses and asked Yong Min for opinion.
Yong Min basically said every time that she looked beautiful in anything she tried. Yong Min couldn¡¯t help but develop some feelings for her. He quickly tried to focus his attention somewhere else, but every time she would appear with a new dress, he couldn¡¯t help but look back and exclaim how beautiful she was.
Every time he says this, Li Juan would laugh and at the same time redden from blushing. She would rarely get any compliment from guys her age. The only ones that would compliment her were her parents and Uncle Wang. No man has ever befriended her, as she looked unreachable because of her beauty and background.
After they finished shopping, Uncle Wang drove Yong Min back to school. Yong Min got out of the car and expressed how grateful and thankful he was to Li Juan. Li Juan smiled, and bid farewell to Yong Min.
¡°See you tomorrow!¡± Li Juan said.
¡°Yeah, see you. Take care!¡± Yong Min smiled.
He quickly went to the dormitory after he saw the car left. He lied down the bed and recalled everything that happened today. He couldn''t help but smile, Li Juan was beautiful and she was friendly to him.
As he was lying down, he noticed a strange symbol embedded on the roof, it was glowing.
Yong Min didn¡¯t noticed but he was already looking at the symbol for an hour. He only looked away from the symbol when he heard a knock on his door.
¡°Brother Yong, are you still awake? It¡¯s me Sheng Ning.¡± Sheng Ning said behind the door.
Yong Ming opened the door and Sheng Ning stood in front, bringing some books and notebooks for him.
¡°This is for you brother Yong. I asked the seniors who weren¡¯t using their old books if they would like to give it to you, and this notebook is for you to use. I noticed earlier that you only have a single one.¡± Sheng Ning said.
¡°Thank you brother Sheng!¡± Yong Ming smiled when he heard this, he really needed this stuffs.
¡°No problem, you can just ask me anything you want as long as I could get it for you.¡± Sheng Ning said.

It was unknown how much time had passed since he tried absorbing the energy from the bone but when he opened his eyes, he saw young woman his age, sleeping in front of him, holding a tray full of delicacies, made from wild beasts. When he saw the young woman, he noticed that it was already evening, and what was more, is that it was likely already past midnight.
He stood up and took a blanket made from wild, beasts hide and cover the young woman with it. But when he did so, the young woman woke up.
¡°Ahhhh!¡± the young woman exclaimed in horror when he saw Yong Min.
The young woman quickly knelt down and cried and said as she stammered ¡°I¡¯m sorry young lord, I didn¡¯t mean to¡.I didn¡¯t notice¡that I fell asleep.¡±
Yong Min only touched her forehead and said ¡°don¡¯t worry, its already past midnight, just go ahead and sleep.¡±
As he said that, he took the tray from the young woman and started chomping at the food. Then he decided to go and absorb the energy from the bone again. The young woman was originally scared, but when he saw Yong Min not punishing her, did she relax. It was unknown when she fell asleep again, but it seemed that as if she was really tired. Although there were many circles and X¡¯s all over the map, the three great elders were focused on looking at a spot on the eastern part of the map. It was where the main army of the alliance of the plain was gathered, led by their supreme elder and great elders.
Around the three great elders were close to a hundred people. They were the elders of the three high peaks plateau. They gathered because of the constant attacks of the Alliance of the plain. They were waiting for the orders as to when they would counter attack and how they would do it.
¡°What do we do? They attacked the post to our south, and even managed to rout the warriors on the west.¡± Lu Angou said.
