《The System》
Chapter 1: Where Timothy meets God
"Fuck you. You hear me? Fuck you.¡± A man screamed, roared, his words reaching none. ¡°I look around and see a hellhole. How you could have made this, I do not know. Hear me, I could do better.¡± Two arms flapped into the air, fists raised. ¡°Do you hear me, God? I am challenging you. If you ignore me it is because you are afraid you¡¯ll lose. If you smite me it is because you know you¡¯ll lose. And if you accept, if you give me the ability to create, I will show you I can create a better world.¡±
The man looked around. He stood atop one of the many hills which riddled the landscape. A river cut through them all and little boats slowly meandered through it. Nobody was there to hear him. He knew not what to do, so he left. And he began to run. Downwards he went. Quicker and quicker, till all he heard was the beating of his heart. Slowly everything left his mind. And right when he entered a soothing state of oblivion, he got jolted out of it. In front of him, on the road he was running on, an old man appeared. With a long white beard, a robe, and wrinkles on his face, he was the epitome of a wise man. God.
¡°Did you have to be an old man?¡± God chuckled. ¡°No, I did not, does it bother you?¡± Saliva dripped down from the corners of the crazy man¡¯s mouth. Here God stood. In the end, it was not for naught, his prayers had been heard. He could not help himself, but to ask. If God was all powerful then God must be able to look like anything he wanted. And yet he looked precisely like his idea of God, a foolish old man. One who no longer had the will to change. One who was content in his ways, how foolish they may be. One who was blind to all the things that could be better. He knew he had to answer, so he said: ¡°It does bother me. Although what does and does not bother me is of no importance to what I said before. Do you accept my challenge? Will you give me the power to create?¡± He was baffled as to why such flowery language left his mouth. It must have been the work of God, for he was never so eloquent. God answered and said to him: ¡°I accept, Timothy. The ability to create will be yours. In return, the ability to destroy will forever be lost to you.¡±This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.
Timothy didn¡¯t notice the fact that God knew his name. It wouldn¡¯t have fazed him anyway, he expected miracles and he got them. Timothy only heard the words: ¡®I accept¡¯ before he fell on the ground and lost his mind to the ecstasy that coursed through him. Power reverberated through the air. An unseen force bounced around the area on which Timothy lay. Primal forces of the universe weaved a net and slowly pressed onto his forehead, creating an imprint. When Timothy woke up, God was gone, and all he had was a burning headache and some stone tablets on the ground. He knew already what they said. Those were the rules he had to adhere to. The challenge would start when all the souls on Earth got copied to a new realm. All the souls had to be copied at the same time. He had to create a new world to the best of his ability. In the afterlife, every soul would see the life he had in each world, and would then decide which one was better. The world with the most votes would be declared better. If he lost, he would lose his ability to create, damning him to a life without being able to create or destroy. If he won, he would enter the cycle of reincarnation in his own world. Timothy looked around. He tried breaking a twig. No matter how much force he put on the twig, he couldn¡¯t break it. With no trouble however, he materialized another twig. Timothy had to win. His late dad always told him: ¡°Son, two minds are better than one.¡± So he thought for a second what to do, and then disappeared.
Chapter 2: Blackburn and His Choice
¡°Breaking news, a new island appeared from the middle of nowhere in the Atlantic Ocean. It looks like a circular slab, made purely out of stone. Governments from all over the world have sent their experts to inspect it. Speculations about its origin are spreading like a wildfire on social media. Here in the studio is our very own expert on Geology: Peter Carey. Tell me, Peter, what do you think about the Slab?¡±
¡°Well, as you may have heard, the slab floats on the water. There is nothing connecting it to land. It puzzles me as a geologist, how could such a mysterious and wondrous slab suddenly appear? It is logical that most minds quickly jump to the conclusion that it must be supernatural or alien. Hell, if I didn¡¯t firmly believe that the supernatural didn¡¯t exist, I would say: God made it. No, I believe that this is alien technology. Experts have tested the stone and it is regular old plain stone. There is some sort of forcefield that makes it float on the water. The Slab is also fixed. It doesn¡¯t move. Really, NATO tried to move it with some of their very best ships. It didn¡¯t budge. There are now over a hundred scientist stationed on the Slab, trying to figure out how and why it works.¡±
Then the TV paused. ¡°Okay students, speculation time. What could this imply?¡± The students in question quickly tried to think about a well-formulated answer. Very early on, on the first day that these students entered his lecture hall, he made it clear to them that they had to formulate their answer. Else he wouldn¡¯t even listen. This didn¡¯t make him popular, but it worked. Now they always thought before they answered.
Joan, a particularly bright student answered: ¡°Professor Blackburn, I believe that if we can¡¯t figure out how the Slab works, that it may be something metaphysical. Which would revolutionize Philosophy as we know it. One of the key aspects of the metaphysical is that we can¡¯t see it. We will never know if it is there. Now? We may very well have definitive proof.¡±Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author''s consent. Report any sightings.
Joan¡¯s answer sparked a discussion with the rationalists. They were convinced that it must be alien technology, for there was no metaphysical. I was content to let them debate. Interference was unneeded. Every student was now debating, and I dazed away listening to them. It seems like I struck gold with the Slab. It was one of the most debated topics in the country, and that was applicable to every field of study. Even philosophers had heated discussions about that. Not to speak about the scientists. Never were there so many answers to a governments request for research. Scientist all around the world jumped on the opportunity to go to the Slab. A bleep awoke me from my daydreaming. It must have been Erick. ¡°Erick, turn off your phone.¡± Erick got his phone. Another bleep, this time it was Suzy. ¡°Okay, to those who haven¡¯t yet turned off their phone, turn off your phone.¡± Now they all checked their phone. A murmur rose from their midst. Thirty years of teaching experience told me something was wrong.
¡°Professor, please turn the TV back on.¡±
¡°Writing has begun to appear on the mysterious slab. It is a set of instructions written in every known language. It says that those who want to think about a better world should mark their dominant hand with this symbol before midnight. Here is live footage of the writing and the symbol.¡±
The TV continued to blabber on about the instructions. A better world. The whole class was heatedly discussing what it may mean, and I was too tired to stop them. ¡°Class dismissed. Your homework is a three-page essay about the philosophical implications of the instruction, or an interpretation of the symbol.¡±
Finally having some quiet to think about the whole situation, I looked up the symbol. It was an abstract rendering of a bird. Elegant, a bit like a sparrow. My bones rattled. Deep inside, I knew what I wanted. Quivering, I slowly drew the lines on my hand.
Chapter 3: Chomsky Joins the Madness
¡°Where am I?¡± ¡°We are we?¡± Thousands and thousands near me asked an iteration of the same question. Even though I expected to be transported, transferred somehow, I was still surprised. A miracle, we were all on the Slab. Or something that looked like it. All I knew was that I stood upon a piece of stone. All the people crowded my vision and made me a little dizzy. My old body couldn¡¯t deal with such a crowd. The floor was solid stone, and there was no ceiling. Emptiness stretched above me, and it was not the emptiness of space. There were no tell-tale twinkling stars to light up the emptiness. This was true emptiness, nothingness.
¡°Some of you have questions, and rest assured they will be addressed. You all are on the Slab, inside a universe yet to come. See this as a fresh start. You will think about a world that would be best for mankind. To make this easier: Shout the name of the person you want to work with and if they are here you will be brought to him or her. You can also shout the name of what you want, and you will have it.¡± People began shouting, names, probably loved ones and friends. Then a deep voice said: ¡°A comfortable chair.¡± I could recognize that voice everywhere, and just like I expected, two seconds later I heard a grunt. My friend and colleague, Chomsky, sat in the distance. ¡°Chomsky!¡± I teleported to him. ¡°Well that was unnecessary, I could have walked here myself. Anyways, how are you, Chomsky?¡±
Chomsky, a reliable friend with a voice in which you could hear the many cigars he had smoked, said nothing. He was thinking. Using the only way I knew to get his attention, I neared him and said: ¡°Humans are born knowledgeable.¡± That was so fundamentally wrong according to him, that he got snapped out of whatever state he was in. ¡°No that¡¯s not true!¡± After seeing my amused expression, he sighed. ¡°How amusing, Blackburn.¡± The shouting was beginning to stop, and people were beginning to cluster together. ¡°It was a joke.¡± For all what he was worth, for all his brilliance, Chomsky couldn¡¯t handle jokes. Thankfully he forgave me most of the time when I made a joke. ¡°Ask for a chair, Blackburn. Old fellows like us shouldn¡¯t stand for too long.¡± I did just that, and two seconds later I sat down on a nice sofa, facing Chomsky. And that¡¯s how our discussion started.A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
After three hours of discussion, there was one thing we both agreed on. That we could not create a utopia. We both liked to think about utopias in our free time, as a hobby of sorts. In the beginning, we still believed that a utopia was possible. Soon we realized that humans would not be humans if we lived in a perfect society. Mankind needs fear to know safety, pain to know pleasure, and hatred to know love. Everything needs to be balanced. Mankind could not live in a utopia. The way to create a world better than the one we left, was to intensify both sides. Because to lead a truly exceptional and worthy life, one needed intensity. All had to be balanced, so be it. That didn¡¯t mean we couldn¡¯t change the weights. So with a renewed vigor, we started designing a world. A world in which everyone could live a life worth living. A world bubbling with intensity. Primal and raw, that was how we wanted our world to be. Dangerous enough so that overpopulation would never be a problem.
Meaning was the holy pillar of the world. Yes, that was how we wanted it. Slowly, through constant discussion, our vision grew clearer. We were like madmen, papers with scribblings and schemes were produced by the second. Finally, our draft lay. Metaphysical rules written down on paper. The seed of a world. A savage world, but one that made us wish we were younger. So we could explore it. One thing left to do. I looked towards Chomsky, and he nodded. The honor was mine, with our draft in hand, I said: ¡°God¡¯s attention¡±.
Chapter 4: Let There Be Light
Timothy was pleased, very pleased. The idea was brilliant, and the execution difficult, not impossible, however. Sure, not everyone would like it. But it was made so that everyone would adapt, and learn to like it. Everybody would be able to live a grandiose life. Others were not even close to the greatness of this idea, and none of the people at the Slab were smart enough to ask for his attention and pitch their creations.
¡°Thank you all for participating in this lovely experiment, you will now be dismissed.¡± The Slab was suddenly quiet, only the two madmen remained. Timothy visualized himself, appearing as a regular human. ¡°I should warn you to never speak of what you have created, it may skewer the balance of your beautiful system. I do not believe threats are necessary, as you are surely smart enough to understand what will happen if you do talk.¡± The men appeared nervous, and they should be. A god was talking to them after all. Timothy was benevolent, and he would reward them for their efforts. He actually felt a little sorry for them by intimidating them. ¡°Rewards for your efforts are natural. In the new world, you will see the value of your minds.¡± They liked that part. With a wave of his hands, a gesture that Timothy didn¡¯t expect to ever make again, he dismissed the two old men. Finally, he had some peace and quiet, he needed the concentration for what he would do next. Even as an omnipotent God, creating something still required effort, and a whole world would surely require a lot more effort. Timothy knew it all would be worth it.
He drifted into the void. Far away from the Slab. With a smile, he said: ¡°Let there be light¡±. Theatrics, even with nobody around Timothy still enjoyed them. Then he realized that he could shape better, with speech. He did not know why. His abilities still baffled and confused him, he just knew how to do all this. ¡°Let there be land so vast, that none can explore it all.¡± And there was land, riddled with mountain ranges, rivers and oceans. Three continents, with boundless oceans dividing them. Three continents, all unforgiving. Beautiful. There were artists on the Slab, continuously drawing landscapes. Their imagination stimulated by the possibility of creating a new world. Timothy thoroughly enjoyed their work. And so the creations of many artists flowed into the world. Shaping and shifting the fresh world. Creating beauty that previously only existed in the minds of visionaries. The Slab became a moon. Timothy rested and floated down to his creation. He wandered around, and touched things up here and there. Unbeknownst to him, a day had passed. If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it.
¡°Let there be life, so dangerous that humanity will never spread.¡± And monsters formed and populated the world. They nestled in mountain ranges, burrowed into the earth, hid in the woods and swam into the oceans. Timothy was a good God. For every wicked monster, there was one kind. For every dangerous monster, there was one harmless. This was important, for without balance, the system could not function. The innocent were protected, until their protectors came. For all the innocent creatures would otherwise not be able to survive the onslaught of the monsters. They needed the protection, and if there was no man, God would be gracious. The system was still skewered, designed around a missing variable. When mankind settled in, everything would be balanced.
Timothy thought once again about the rules. He agreed with them, only something told him it would take almost all his being to keep track of the intense web it would create, when every soul was hooked onto it. Once everything snapped into place, he would have no essence left to change anything. Not without disconnecting everyone, which would be fatal for all. But he had faith. He would make sure that there was one last thing, infused into the whole world, before he transported a copy of all mankind into his creation. Timothy took a jump of faith and said: ¡°Let there be meaning.¡±
Chapter 5: Peter and the Wolf
Peter did not expect this. Not at all. He freaked out, big time. He was enjoying his midnight walk in the park. Of course not to buy anything illegal. Anyways, he was walking through his nice neighborhood park, just inhaling the good old healthy air, when suddenly he heard a loud ringing noise. It was so loud that he grabbed his ears, and buckled over. And then the weird stuff happened. When the ringing noise was over, he was not in the park anymore. To further consolidate that believe, behind those trees stood no drug dealer. Or the drug dealer had somehow morphed into a wolf. Either way, the situation seemed bad. Enough drug deals gone slightly bad had given him quite a good instinct when he needed to get out of a situation. Not that he needed that instinct, the 100-pound wolf running towards him already did the trick of convincing him that he needed to get the hell out of there. He ran, not the brightest idea to do, he had watched enough National Geographic and History Channel that he needed to stand still and look threatening. But no, adrenaline kicked in and his cortisol levels soared through the roof, reaching an all-time high. Peter had no mental capacity left to think about the best course of action.
A tree, a tree! Of course, somehow Peter came to the realization that he maybe would be able to climb into a tree. Wolfs couldn¡¯t climb in trees, right? The wolf almost neared him. He didn¡¯t dare to look back, for fear he would trip in the dark and die. Lucky for Peter, the ragged breathing of the wolf gave his location away, and by the sound of it, the wolf was indeed very close to him. In the beginning he only heard a loud howl, that¡¯s when he started running. In Peter¡¯s defense, the wolf was very scary looking and had bright red eyes, the annoying bleeps that he heard didn¡¯t make it any better either. Slowly over the course of his sprint, the breathing and noise became louder. The breathing at the moment was a bit too loud for Peter¡¯s comfort, and with athletic skill he hadn¡¯t displayed since 8th grade, he jumped and reached for the nearest branch.Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.
Wolfs, however, could also jump. And when Peter somehow managed to grasp the branch and pull himself almost on top of it, the wolf got close enough to jump and bite a bit of Peter¡¯s leg. Tough luck for both parties involved. With enormous adrenaline powered shakes of his leg and one well-placed kick with the other leg, he managed to get the wolf to leave. Albeit with a bit of his calf. The wolf¡¯s howls sounded a little bit sad, and if Peter interpreted correctly, even a bit disappointed. While to wolf was circling around his branch, Peter finally had a chance to take a breather. The adrenaline ebbed away, and the pain rushed in. A scream echoed through the woods.
Peter couldn¡¯t say fuck enough times, the pain stung like a bitch. He was sitting on a sizeable tree branch, quite high in the tree. He had moved higher up as soon as he could, in fear the wolf would make a second attempt. After inspecting the wound in his right leg, he deemed it not fatal. It didn¡¯t bleed enough, and he could still move it, although it did still hurt. Still, he wanted to do at least something to stop an infection, because he knew the period after inflection was the most crucial for recovery. Thanks, Bear Grylls. A bout of searching followed, every pocket turned upside down and emptied in his hands. In total, he had: a wallet with a modest amount of cash, keys, a lighter, a couple of rolling papers, and a little bit of leftover weed.
Weed was a medicinal herb. Peter was in pain. Peter had a wound that needed treatment. So Peter rubbed half of his weed in his calf, and lit a joint with the remaining part. It calmed him down, as he took deep breaths, the pain left him. Then he once again heard a ringing sound, he was able to focus on it this time though. And oh boy, what he saw next was weird.
Chapter 6: Big Blue Boxes
|
You received one new message.
|
In front of Peter¡¯s eyes floated a big blue box, with clear letters. Weed had no hallucinogenic capabilities. Peter wasn¡¯t high, he smoked so little that the only effect was dulling his pain. No, this seemed real. With interest, he watched the incoming messages.

That explained why he didn¡¯t see the messages when arriving here, on Aerb. Because directly when he got here, there was a wolf waiting for him. How it counted as battle, when all he did was run, Peter did not know. The next message was a logical one:
He had to read that guide, and he would, were it not for the onslaught of messages that followed.

This was crazy. This was absolutely bananas. Peter had to accept the reality, because it all felt too real. The weed could not stop panic creeping in. Eyes dilated, Peter thought: ¡®Guide¡¯. The guide contained a lot of helpful information, mostly stating that he was on Aerb, that every human was there, and that things worked differently now. He could gain skills, which would have an immediate positive or negative effect. It did not say how to get them, but he figured it involved performing action of some kind. After all, he got the skill sprint after sprinting. The most useful thing in the whole guide was however that he could think: ¡®Status¡¯, to get more detailed information. The guide was vague about what that entailed, but Peter as a true explorer thought Status as soon as he read that, closing the rest of the guide.

It felt strange, seeing his whole existence reduced to simple numbers. Alien, even, he could not find himself in the simple blue chart that floated on top of his eyes. With a sigh, he resumed reading the guide. There was little valuable information left, only that he could turn on an on eye display, which would enable him to continuously track his health and stamina.
Peter thought about the attributes, according to the guide, STR stood for his strength. DEX stood for his dexterity, AGI for his agility, END for his endurance, INT for his intelligence, WIS for wisdom, and LCK for luck. Peter had a lot of questions for this so called system, he would love to know how in the world his luck and wisdom were quantified. When his health reached zero, would he die? Would he get stronger if he increased his attributes? If yes, how could he do that?
The guide offered no solace. Only the last sentence said anything about how he could get stronger, and it was quite a scary one. Absorb essence, and grow stronger. The guide, being as vague as it was, did not say how he could absorb essence. Oh well, that was for another day. Peter was tired, at the moment it looked like he would live, and he was safe on his sturdy branch. By a miracle, Peter managed to sleep.
Chapter 7: And the Wound Was Gone
What Peter saw when he woke up was baffling, the wound in his leg was gone. As if it never existed in the first place. In the right corner of his vision, his health bar said 125/125. The wolf was gone as well, at least he could neither see the wolf or hear it. What should he do? His stomach was rumbling, food and water were definitely one of his priorities. He was afraid, if there was one wolf, there were probably even more. He needed to figure out what essence was too, he doubted he would get lucky again, the next encounter with such a feral wolf could kill him. It would be nice if he had company too, Peter was a chatterbox and he did not like being alone.
Peter decided to climb higher in the tree, maybe he would see something interesting. Peter knew he was in a forest, but to see it from up high was breathtaking. Huge ancient looking trees spread miles and miles. Majestic, Peter had no other words for it. A streamlet slithered through the trees. It was barely visible, but it was there. It looked like it was a two or three miles away, Peter could walk that distance easily enough. He just had to be careful not to anger any wolves. Remembering in what direction the river was, Peter climbed down.

The blue box caught surprised him. It just dinged into existence. The rarity was common, like his sprint skill. Maybe that said something about how easy it was to get. Peter cared little, he waved away the pop-up, and dropped down from the tree.
The ground was covered by moss. Near the tree he found a sturdy stick, he took it with him. A stick couldn¡¯t harm a wolf, but it made him feel a little bit more secure. With a stick in his hand, Peter began walking towards the stream.

The tiny bit of security that he just acquired immediately left his body. That sounded ominous. Did this mean that it would be difficult to get to the streamlet? At least now he knew how to get essence. He needed to complete this quest. There was no use worrying. Peter was calm. Very calm. His walking pace had increased and his eyes were darting around.
¡°I just have to get to the river, I can do this. Get to the river, easy-peasy.¡± Peter began talking to himself. Questions floated through his mind. ¡°Where is everyone? Everybody got transported, that¡¯s what the message said. Then why am I alone? How does essence make me stronger? How the hell does this all work?¡± Needless to say, Peter had no answers for his questions.
Making noise in a forest where there are wolves is not a good idea. Predators single out the unusual noises, and move towards the source of it. Without Peter noticing it, a little green creature was stalking him. After twenty minutes of stalking, the creature had waited enough, Peter was no threat. It unslung its bow, aimed, and missed.
Peter snapped out of his daydreaming when suddenly an arrow hit the tree in front of him. That was bad. Peter turned around in a panic to see where the arrow came from. An hideous green creature stood there, not even 3 foot tall. It had little tusks in its mouth and its eyes gleamed with craftiness. It looked awfully humanoid, standing on two legs, having two arms. But there was no time to inspect the creature with greater detail, as it was already putting another arrow on its bow. Peter had to move, had to get out of range. He ran for cover to the nearest tree, and stood behind it. What could he do? Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.

Kill? He had to kill it? It was logical, but Peter had never killed anything bigger than a bug. Peter realized that it was the only way to stop the goblin from calling help. How many more of these goblins would there be if the goblin called for help? Would all the goblins want to kill him? If it was kill, or be killed, maybe Peter could do this. This was his survival. He took a couple of deep breaths, readied his stick, and ran out from his cover. He could see the goblin, it was around twenty yards away. The goblin released its arrow. Peter tried to dodge it while rushing towards the goblin. It grazed his shoulder, his health declined to 115/125. Peter was now almost in front of the goblin. It released a high pitch shriek and then attacked him with a dagger. While the goblin stabbed him in his thigh, Peter swung his stick and hit the goblin¡¯s head. And he hit it again, and again, and again. Finally, something cracked, and the goblin fell over.

Well, that was a horrific reminder. He emptied what little he had left in his stomach. With the taste of puke in his mouth, Peter ran away. Peter was getting sick of this, both literally and figuratively. Normally he would be excited, he was in world were he could become stronger. He had a fresh new start, one that he always wanted. But not like this.
It was a destructive way of thinking. With difficulty Peter changed his state of mind, and began thinking positive thoughts. Yes, he would grow stronger. Yes, he would make the best out of this. It was still a new start, and he would take every opportunity. Resting for a bit, Peter sat on the moss, and looked at his Status.

Chapter 8: He Saw Nature
Peter had one attribute point available, he didn¡¯t know how his stats were determined, and if he was average or under average. What he did know was that next to luck his lowest attribute was endurance. With a bitt of willpower he focused on the END symbol, and a small description box popped up.

Thinking that he¡¯d probably need to run at some point, he choose yes. The box went away, and nothing happened. But Peter couldn¡¯t believe it, his status clearly said 6 END, so something must have happened.
Trying to keep his frustration at bay, Peter activated his reflection skill. His mind immediately calmed down, and then he realized one crucial thing. He needed to keep himself alive, and he needed three things for that: Food, water, and a safe place to sleep. He just had to keep going towards the stream he saw early, because water was his main priority. It was quit early in the day so he would look for a place to sleep when he arrived at the stream. Food could wait, the human body could go without food for a pretty long time, but he would look for things to eat while walking.
With a groan Peter got up from his nice patch of moss, and started walking. Walking was pretty boring, after an hour Peter¡¯s mind began wandering. How Peter got the thought, nobody knows, but he somehow thought that magic would be possible in this strange new world. It could¡¯ve been a bit of leftover weed clogging his rational capabilities, but in a way he was right. Without knowing Peter entered a state of reflection, the old trees and the lack of immediate danger soothing him into a meditative state. Every step he took connected him to the world, all his thoughts leaving him.
He felt something primal in the forest, he didn¡¯t notice it before but something filled the air. Something mystical. Acting on instinct he reached out with his mind. This narrative has been purloined without the author''s approval. Report any appearances on Amazon.

Two seconds later he was wide awake. His mind thunderstruck, reeling with the impact of the unknown. No, he should call it the impact of nature. He saw a very small part of it, yet it left him speechless. The skill he was granted was useful as well. Now he didn¡¯t have to worry about dying from food poisoning.
But now was not the time to experiment, and so Peter started walking again. He could vaguely hear the stream after a while, a nice soothing sound. He hadn¡¯t encountered any more monsters, but Peter was still pretty on edge. This world was dangerous, that was a simple fact he discovered only one minute after his arrival.
Finally, he arrived at the stream. Crystal clear water zigzagged through the forest, he could see a couple of fish swimming, and he even saw in the distance an animal that looked like a deer drinking. Peter quickly got on his knees and drank some water, he didn¡¯t even know he was so thirsty till the could water hit his throat. With big gulps Peter quenched his thirst, shifting towards a more comfortable position he looked around. There was a small bush with bright blue berries just a few meters away from him, he walked towards it and tried to listen to his intuition, utilizing the skill he had recently acquired. It seemed safe to eat, so he plucked a couple of berries from the bush and swallowed them.
The first few seconds everything felt okay, then he began to sweat. A minute later, Peter lost his consciousness.

When Peter woke up it was already getting dark. The quest completed window surprised him, but after a while he discovered that it must have been the river quest, which he completed. Where the essence went which he had gotten for it, he didn¡¯t know. He should¡¯ve gotten 10 essence, but there was no indicator saying that.
The berries were supposed to be safe, but he was left defenceless for a pretty long time. After one use of his new skill, he discovered that it had flaws. The new quest he had gotten was interesting though, it was another confirmation that there was real magic in this world.
Peter clenched his fists and swore to himself that he would use magic, and this quest had pointed him in the right direction. There was mana in his body, and what he remembered from various fictions mana was the fuel of magic. He only had to look in his body, but that could wait for later. It was getting dark and monsters lived in the dark. He would not be chased by a wolf again or attacked by weird green creatures for that matter.
A safe place to sleep would be high in a tree or maybe in a cave of some sorts. There were bigger trees in the deeper parts of the forest and maybe there would be a cave there as well. The stream went uphill, it came from a section of the older forest.
So he decided to walk uphill, following the stream. It looked like he had maybe one more hour before it got really dark, so Peter walked with a brisk pace. Sadly he had to be concentrated on his walking, because the ground was uneven, or he would have activated meditation.
Twenty minutes into his hike Peter felt a pinprick in his neck. Green blurs filled his vision, just before he faded into unconsciousness. The cackling laughs of goblins filled the forest. You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author.
¡°Hey you awake? Damn they got you good too, ey? You awake?¡± Groggily Peter mumbled a reply. ¡°Yeah, yeah, I¡¯m awake.¡± Slowly his eyes started to work again. A small torch was lit in one corner of a cave or mud hut of some sorts, and somebody sat opposite of him.
¡°Hey be happy, I discovered something you know. Wanna know what?¡±
The situation we were in clearly didn¡¯t curb his enthusiasm. With a big smile on his face the Caucasian man said: ¡°Ah you now what, I¡¯ll tell you. The blue boxes don¡¯t like these goblins very much, luck is on our side. I got a quest! Kill all the goblins it told me! Everything is gonna be alright!¡±
Peter, in a sassy mood for losing his consciousness twice within a day, asked: ¡°How exactly are you going to kill those goblins? You are tied to a wall.¡±
¡°That won¡¯t stop us though. You are tied to a wall too, but I bet you¡¯re figuring out how to get out of here.¡±
As if on queue a big blue box popped up.

50 Essence

This quest would give him a whopping 50 essence, more than thrice what he had gotten from his kill the goblin quest. The consequences of failure were bigger too, as even Peter could figure out that he would die if he didn¡¯t escape.
¡°Ey, what¡¯s your name? Mine¡¯s Raul.¡±
¡°Raul, nice to meet you, mine¡¯s Peter. Could you do me a favour? Could you be quiet for a while?¡±
Raul mumbled a quick reply and then went into silence, giving Peter the opportunity to use his meditation skill. He needed the quiet in his mind to figure out a solution. He began looking around more carefully, but there was nothing in the room to help him. There was a torch outside of reach for both him and Raul, and there was an tunnel which turned left, which was also the only way out. He and Raul where tied to a wall with some sort of rope. His hands were behind his back, and he couldn¡¯t move them.
Looking around was useless, so Peter closed his eyes and focused even harder. As he was thinking of all sorts of improbable escape methods, he suddenly thought of his other quest. Maybe he could use the mana in his body. It would be like a kill two birds with one stone scenario, use the mana to loosen the ropes and run away.
Peter tried to find the mana coursing through his body, but it was harder than he thought it would be. That was okay however. He would try even harder. And then he felt something, wiggling and squirming inside of him. Visualizing a hand inside his body he wrestled with it. Almost he lost control, but he held on. After a while it became docile. Then he guided it towards his hands and pushed with all his might.
An explosion rang through the cave. Raul screamed in surprise. "The fuck was that?". The raw mana Peter forced out of him had reactedrather violently with the outside air, creating lots of noise and a little fire. The fire was luckily all Peter needed to get loose, the adrenaline made it so that he didn''t even feel his skin sizzling from the fire. Quickly he put down the small embers on his shirt and then he rushed towards the stunned Raul to help him. Grabbing the torch Peter burned his ropes, taking a bit more time to make sure he didn''t burn Raul''s skin as well.
Raul got up and said to him: ¡°Quick, we need to get out of here, the explosion must have warned the goblins.¡±
Peter hadn¡¯t thought of that, nodding in acknowledgement he turned towards the exit. The two of them were able to run for a minute before they had to stop.
In front of them was a very large cave, filled with goblins who were staring at them. A screech rang through the air, and then all the goblins rushed towards them.
Chapter 10: Boom Berries
Peter froze, that¡¯s the effect a couple dozen of goblins running at breakneck speed towards you can have at a person, but luckily Raul knew what to do. Raul grabbed Peter and started running. ¡°Snap out of it!¡±
Way too slow for the situation they were in, Peter snapped out of it and started looking around for an exit. The goblins paces were a bit quicker than theirs, but they had a head start. Natural light shone through vines to the right of them and so they ran towards it.
How symbolic, they literally ran towards the light, their only chance at survival. The only problem was that two goblins stood before the vines, and they couldn¡¯t take their time dealing with them as the horde was gaining ground. But Raul, again, knew what to do. Sucker punching one in the face, and tackling the other, he made way for them to push through the vines.
They burst out into the forest, the sounds of the goblins behind them. Filled with adrenaline they both kept running. It was dark, but somehow Peter still had the torch with which he loosened Raul¡¯s ropes. The dim fire illuminated the forest and after ten minutes of running they stopped to catch their breath.
¡°Extinguish the torch.¡±, Raul said. There was a sense of authority in his voice and Peter thought for a while to say no, but he did it anyway. ¡°Why? The fire was handy you know. Now we can¡¯t see anything.¡±
¡°Do you see any fire around here? The goblins could use it to track us down, they¡¯d just have to look around for an illuminated patch of forest.¡±
Peter didn¡¯t think the goblins were that smart, but it made sense. Speaking about goblins, why weren¡¯t they still following them? It was awfully quiet and there were no signs of a giant parade of green monsters.
¡°Thanks for untying me too Peter, I appreciate it. Now we need to keep going, to get as far away from those goblins as we need.¡± The man that was jovially joking in the cave was gone, Raul had turned serious.
Peter mumbled something in reply as he watched with wide eyes his quest completion windows.

He would look at that skill later. It sounded awesome, but Raul was right. The light of the moon was just bright enough to let him see were he had to step. As frightened as he was that there was going to be another wolf attack, there didn¡¯t seem to be any. He could here some howls in the distance, but Raul just said: ¡°Keep on walking.¡±. Raul let him on a dead march, he was utterly exhausted when he was allowed to rest. It was already dawn by then. Sitting under a tree next to Raul, Peter asked him his first personal question, because if he was going to spend time with this man he wanted to know him.
¡°So you were in the army or something?¡±
¡°Yeah, you know, I was in the army for 10 years, earning money for the wifey, you know how it is.¡±
The seriousness was gone, and there was the man he met in the cave.
¡°You know, we should search for a base and some food, I am pretty hungry. Haven¡¯t eaten for days! Days! Horrible.¡±
Peter agreed with him wholeheartedly, the berries hadn¡¯t filled him at all. In an attempt to keep the conversation going Raul asked him a question.
¡°What was that explosion? You don¡¯t seem like the person to carry explosives with ya.¡±
¡°It was something called Raw Mana Explosion. Got it by eating a few berries.¡±
¡°Woa dude, show me those berries sometime!¡±
With that the conversation was officially dead, and Peter gracefully used a couple of minutes of silent time to check his status and read the guide.

Chapter 11: Gooseberries
¡°A self imposed quest is required to create your class. Once you set down on your path the system will recognize it, completion of the quest will be rewarded with a class. Classes can not be removed, or destroyed. The creation of a class is only possible under level 10.¡±
The Class Creation Guide was short, it was mostly a book about warnings. Warning about the risks and dangers involved, it said that one could even die during the process. A class was an integral part of one¡¯s being, something that couldn¡¯t be removed. It could change, and it would grow with you. Or diminish, depending on your circumstances. Taking on a class was no light matter, it was a decision of life or death. A botched class could result in never being able to grow stronger, and that didn¡¯t seem right to Peter.
His stomach growled heavily, it had been two days since Peter ate anything, and the march through the woods consumed a lot of energy. Peter was baffled how Raul could still remain so energetic. In the sunlight Peter could now clearly see well defined muscles, veins pulsing through the man. He wondered what his physical stats were, probably a lot higher than his. Deciding for a moment if it was inappropriate to ask for somebody else¡¯s stats, something that said a lot about somebody, Peter just went for it. Nothing to lose and a lot to gain.
¡°Raul, what are your stats?¡±

His physical stats were way higher than his. Stamina regeneration alone was five times his, and his strength was nearly double. No wonder Peter could see Raul¡¯s muscles so clearly, the man was strong.
How did he use his attribute though, Raul was level one, which meant that he had gotten one.
¡°Raul, where did you place your attribute point?¡±
¡°Intelligence, it seemed so low. And I am no dummy!¡±
Well that explained it. Raul had the same plan as his probably, to even out his stats, get them to be around the same, and then maybe specialize.
His nature affinity had grown on its own, so he wasn¡¯t going to put a point in that. Endurance was once again the best option, maybe it would even quell the hunger inside him.
He upped his endurance with one and then swiped away the screens.
¡°Hey Raul, we need to get some food. I was thinking to look around for some plants, I got a skill that say whether or not they are safe.¡±
¡°Yeah, lets get some food. I¡¯ll look around for a pointy stick, maybe I could kill some wildlife. We shouldn¡¯t stray to far from each other however.¡±
Peter totally agreed with that, Raul turned out to be a good companion so far, and he did not want to let him out of his sight.
And so they wandered for a while, Peter looking for nice plants, and Raul for stick and stones.
Unbeknownst to Peter the time he had spent looking and searching made his NAF stat go up by another point. It went up silently, he had not even gotten a blue box.
After a couple of hours of sweeping the forest they had both achieved their goals. Raul had managed to sharpen a stick with a good looking stone, and was ready to catch some wildlife soon. Peter had found a field with berry bushes, not the same ones he had seen before. The bushes were filled with lots and lots of small hairy berries, ranging from green to red and yellow. There were tons of them and they looked like they weren¡¯t poisonous. To make sure he didn¡¯t pass out, he let Raul eat some of them first. Raul said that they tasted good, and he was still walking, so Peter deemed them safe to eat.
They ate lots of them, until all the hunger they¡¯d gotten was gone. Raul was pumped to go hunting, but first they needed to find a safe place to sleep.
So they continued the search, this time for an uninhabited cave. Peter really wanted to be able to sit for a couple of hours or so, and think about his NAF attribute, and his magical skills. But first they needed to be safe, and they couldn¡¯t guarantee that now.
Especially not after they both had gotten the same ominous popup.
|
Warning! Monsters shall begin actively hunting in 24 hours.
|
Chapter 12: Hidden Potential
¡°Fuck. The goblins are actively going to look for us? We need to find shelter, rapido.¡±
Raul finished his sentences with a couple of creative swear words and then increased his pace.
The trees were growing bigger and lusher, almost ancient looking trunks rose from the ground. They must have been at least fifty meters and had no branches whatsoever for the first forty meters. It was impossible to climb in them, so either they had to look for a cave of some sorts, or a tree in which they could sleep.
After a quick discussion they decided to look for a cave, as Raul said that a cave was the easiest to defend. The terrain was getting rockier and rockier, and it began to grow darker. All the leaves were blocking the natural sunlight, birds sang in the canopy, Peter started to look around a lot more. Sleep deprivation and the unknown was not a good combination, especially not if you were worrying about your life. Worrying was the worst though, and soon Peter was forced to use a mantra to calm himself down. He began constantly repeating the positive, ¡®magic is real, magic is real, magic is real¡¯. The chanting calmed him down, and he began instead of worrying he began to scan the forest. His perception had shifted, before the forest was something to be wary about, now the forest was hauntingly beautiful.
He let himself be lead by Raul, trusting the man to be able to find a good shelter. Meanwhile he was looking around for herbs, he really wanted more of those mana berries. They effectively made him a cannon, albeit an ineffective one, the only downside was the period of unconsciousness.
Raul managed to find a suitable cave two hours later. Although Peter had no experience with caves, this cave honestly looked perfect to him. The entrance was tiny and well hidden, Peter wondered how Raul even found this cave. Once inside, the cave became a bit more spacious, it was still small though. Four by three metres, he guessed. The walls were made from rock, and the cave was so perfect he even suspected that it was manmade, but that would be impossible. This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.
¡°Raul, is it okay if I sit and meditate? I want to replicate the explosion I made earlier.¡±
¡°Sure, just make sure you don¡¯t blow the cave up, or yourself for that matter.¡±
Peter chuckled awkwardly and closed his eyes. Activating his skill ¡®Meditation¡¯ he began searching for the feeling he felt earlier.
¡°Sorry to disturb you, but I am going hunting, I¡¯ll also look for some firewood. You should be alright here, right?¡±
Opening his eyes, Peter said: ¡°Yeah I¡¯ll be alright, thanks. Could you do me a favour though, could you take any interesting herbs with you?¡±
¡°Sure thing.¡±
And with that Raul left. Peter could finally meditate. Forgetting time, the only thing on his mind was the search. First he began to look inwards, scanning himself for mana. Scanning himself for the same thing he had forced out of himself earlier. He tried activating the skill ¡®Raw Mana Explosion¡¯, but it didn¡¯t work. It only created a strain on the same pathways he used to force it out of himself. The skill was pulling for mana, and he had none. How could he get mana? Were was mana? What was mana?
He knew so little and it frustrated him to no end, but the meditation swept all his frustration away. Now he had to search for a solution, and he began to get creative. Since he could not find anything inside of him, he began to look outside of him. Then he felt nature. There was mana inside of nature, slowly he brushed the titanic entity that was nature, the one that blinded him before. He began to pull, pull for the mana that was hidden inside of him. And it worked, as slow as a snail the mana began to move towards him. Visualizing hands again, he began to push it inside of him. When it finally entered him, it began to flow towards his stomach. Indescribable, that was the only word for the process. It required all of his concentration, but in the end he was rewarded by a wonderful sight.
|
Congratulations! You have unlocked the hidden potential inside of you. Mana can now be absorbed from mana sources, to be stored inside your body.
|
Chapter 13: Body Flowers
Peter was ecstatic, he had taken the first step on his road towards the mastering of magic. His status reflected his accomplishment, it now said that he had 10 out of 10 mana, with 0 automatic regeneration.
He got out of the cave as fast as he could and ran towards the nearest tree. The tree trunk was thick enough that two grown man couldn¡¯t touch hands when they gave the tree a hug. It was the perfect training dummy, Peter activated Raw Mana Explosion and pointed.
There was a serious hole in the trunk one boom later. His skill, his mana explosion, had blasted a fist sized hole in the wood. The wood was scorched and he could see little ambers flying around.
The cost of the skill was however no joke, he had only 5 out of 10 mana remaining. It had taking him fifty percent of his hard earned mana to cast the skill, and as he had no regeneration he had to meditate for hours to get it back. Although the skill increased his survivability he could not rely on it. Only in emergencies should he us this skill.
Raul came back looking worried. In one hand he held a raccoon of some sorts and in the other he held various weird looking plants.
¡°Is there any chance that you could practice in silence? I could hear while I was 15 minutes away!¡±
Raul had a point so Peter began thinking. Could he practice his skill in silence? Could he alter the skill in someway so that the explosion was silent? He had a lot to check out, all the possibilities of his magic made him giddy.
But he had to focus, Raul had handed him the herbs. A delicate little plant with white flowers and lots of leaves passed as safe. Reddish moss passed as safe. A tiny unassuming green plant passed as absolutely unsafe. His danger sense was ringing, screaming inside of him to get away from the plant. Why had Raul picked this? It was so unassuming that it didn¡¯t even look like a useful herb.
¡°Where did you find this plant Raul?¡±
Peter pointed a the green herb and asked his question.
¡°Found it surrounded by that blood moss, there was only one of it so it kinda struck me as peculiar.¡±
Peter really wished he could just see what the plant did, that his skill didn¡¯t just say something about the danger, but also about what the herbs did. He knew only one way to discover the effects of a herb, and that was by eating it. No way he would eat this green plant though.

Experimentation was king. Peter popped one of the white flowers inside of his mouth and swallowed it whole. He was pleasantly surprised.

Peter thanked the system, this was perfect. The smell of cooked raccoon hit his nostrils and Peter looked around. Right in front of him stood Raul with some cooked meat.
¡°You were somewhere else dude, you should have seen your face. Totally spaced out. Here¡¯s some food though.¡±
He greedily accepted and then started talking to Raul, excitingly updating Raul about his discoveries. With a filled stomach they went to sleep inside their cozy cave.
Tomorrow would be a big day, tomorrow the monsters would come.
Chapter 14: Dead Bodies Stacked
The morning was a blur in Peter¡¯s mind, they had done so much to prepare for the monsters. Raul had given him a spear, or rather a sharpened stick. The slit through which you could enter the cave was even more hidden now, being covered by some ivy they found.
There was now a pit where they could there fresh water, digging the pit alone took three hours, but it was totally worth it.
Peters hand shook, the time was almost there. The sun was at around the same position as it was when the blue box popped up. He sat next to Raul talking about strategy.
¡°So we¡¯ll try to lure the monsters to the cave entrance, where we¡¯ll go inside the cave, and then kill them. Just stab them while they go inside, it¡¯ll work.¡±
¡°Okay, okay. Can we maybe capture one alive though?¡±
¡°Why, we should just kill all of those monsters.¡±
Spit flew out of Raul¡¯s mouth, as if the monsters had slaughtered his entire family, hatred was apparent on his face.
¡°Because I want to feed one this plant.¡±
It was an excellent chance for Peter to find out what the green plant did, he already felt pity for the poor monster. He had to steel himself though, just like Raul. Either they died or he did, and a choice like that was easily made.
|
Protection has dropped!
Monsters are encouraged to hunt humans.
|
They were coming, Peter could almost smell the tension in the air. He heard howls through the forest, must have been wolves or something.
¡°Fuck, wolves are coming too. Hope they don¡¯t catch our scent.¡±
Peter hoped that too as he had prior experience. These wolves were scary, with those red eyes they had a crazed look. Shivering, Peter likened the color to blood. Blood red eyes, wolves only hunting for blood and raw human meat.
Quickly he activated meditation, because scary thoughts had no place in his mind. The howls got closer and closer. Then Raul gave the signal to enter the cave.
The wolves had arrived just after they had entered the cave. Peter couldn¡¯t really see what they were doing, but they must have been searching. Searching for their scent, smelling the air with their scary noses. They would be unpleasantly surprised because after they tried entering the cave, if they even could, they would meet their end by their spears. If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.
Peter wanted to get stronger and their essence would help him reach his goal. He heard scratching at the entrance and Raul went to the front of the cave to look if they came. They couldn¡¯t enter, a fact for which Peter was grateful, even though he wanted their essence.
He and Raul sat in silence for about an hour, but then the scratching suddenly stopped. Had the wolves given up?
They heard some scurrying and then suddenly a green head popped out of the entrance. It was a goblin! He let out a primal roar and ran towards the green bugger, pointing his spear at its stomach. Raul ran towards it as well and soon the entrance was blocked by a dead goblin. Their spears had easily made the goblin as dead as dead could be. Peter could almost feel the essence flowing into him.
As they began dragging the body deeper into the cave, in an effort to free the entrance, the next goblin already popped in. Like a well-oiled machine two sticks stabbed him. Peter had to much adrenaline in him to think about ethics and the easy with which he slaughtered these poor creatures.
They repeated this process for what seemed like an eternity, and when the cave was almost filled to the brim the goblins stopped coming. The scratching had also stopped, either the wolves had lost interested or they were waiting to ambush them as soon as the stepped out of the cave.
A blue box popped up however, freeing him of his doubts.

¡°It seems were safe now. Lets quickly get these corpses out of the cave before it begins to stink.¡±
Raul had just said it and then he realized how much blood there was. It smelled like poop too, but even worse. Some stomachs and intestines must have been cut open. Dragging bodies out of a very small entrances was a hellish chore, Peter now knew that. He felt sick, so much lost life. All at the cost of making him a bit quicker, a bit faster. He would think about how to use his attribute point later, after the cave was clean, and after he had gotten a good nights sleep. Because by God, he needed the rest.

Well then, it has come to this. I have written myself in a corner. I am genuinly sorry as I am going to put this story on a hiatus, I started with a fresh idea of this crazy guy developing a world and then to let someone explore the insides of it. But there is no creativity anymore, I can''t figure out how to make Peter''s story enjoyable to read or write.
It is just bad writing, plain and simple. At least for me, this is not good enough.Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation.

People whom I have asked to do a review swap, please do leave a review. I genuinly enjoy critiscism and it may point me towards the direction I need to go with my writing. I will of course review your stories as well.
