《Undineson》 Prologue: Prophesy Hi Lava here. This is my first story and I am very open to comments and suggestions. Also if you notice any grammatical errors please let me know in the comments. Also this is a really short chapter (it''s a prologue though) but the first chapter is much longer and after I look it over and make it presentable I''ll post it up thanks for reading! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Prologue- The seasonal storms were especially heavy over the Mako Islands this year. The Mako Islands are part of a small archipelago on the eastern side of the sea country of Calder. Calder is a prosperous country consisting of nearly 20,000 different islands, boasting a powerful Navy to defend its coasts because it. The people of Calder are considered to be the best seafaring people in all of Gaia. Calder is a very popular destination for lovers & tourists because of the tropical environments over many of the islands. Trade in Calder is prosperous due to the many ports and resources provided by the islands. Mercenaries and sailors from around the world come to Calder seeking fame and fortune. The seas and storms made the waters of Calder treacherous to those inexperienced. Even the experienced sailors were wary of the storms. Storms raged for months on end in Calder. This was the 45th day of the storms. Most of Mako Island''s citizens were hiding on this night. Not many would dare venture out in this weather. Despite this kind of dreadful storm, a pair of silhouettes could be seen hiking towards the bluff, one with a small bundle in his arms. Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings. ¡°Sir, is this really okay? H-he¡¯s still but a child, not born but just yesterday¡it doesn¡¯t feel right.¡± one of the shadows, asked the other. ¡°Silence!¡ our kings orders are absolute. You know that.¡± the other shadow states to the other, hesitation clear in his voice, ¡°After we took this babe from the nursery his body was replaced with another child recently born. The parents will not know the difference.¡± ¡°Even so! This feels so wrong! I was trained to fight warriors! Not babies!¡± the first shadow expresses with a heavy heart. Knowing what¡¯s to come to this child. ¡°This child has been prophesied to usurp the throne! The royal family will not allow him to live.¡± the shadow carrying the child explains as the two finally make it to the edge. ¡°It¡¯s such a shame, I can feel the immense strength of this child¡¯s soul.¡± Unveiling the child¡¯s face from the tight swaddling wrap the man gazes upon the child. The shadow holding the child wanted to offer his respects knowing what he is about to do. Astonished, the child is still asleep despite the storm and unknowing of what¡¯s to come and only makes him feel more guilt in his heart. Standing at the edge only inches away from darkness, and the crashing waves below, he softly rests his forehead against the child¡¯s and breathes deeply, exchanging one final breath. ¡°Please find peace in the next world sweet child.¡± the man whispers into the child¡¯s ears, too softly for anyone to hear. The shadow extends his arms over the bluff, and releases the bundle into the crashing waves below¡ Chapter 1: Divine Intervention ---- Chapter One ----- ¡°Hm? What is this?¡± Sensing a presence in the waters a massive shadow suddenly stopped to face Mako Islands, a speck on the horizon. ¡°There shouldn¡¯t be any people in the water during this hour, and surely not in this storm.¡± The shadow made its way to the source of the disturbance, using the quickly draining life force of what it now knew was a human child as a guide. Moving swiftly through the crashing waves and torrential currents, the shadow arrived to the scene in mere seconds, a testament its power. The scene before the entity makes it sigh with pity. A small human, a newborn by the looks of it was slowly sinking to the depths. Its life force drained from its body by the unforgiving sea. ¡°Why would humans do this? From my knowledge they are quite fond of their young. Especially when just born.¡± The shadow wonders to itself confused. Normally the shadow would have left at this point. Many humans die in the ocean, be it by monsters or storm, there was no reason to stick around. Death was just another part of nature after all. However something about the human caught its attention. This young one¡¯s soul¡ so pure, so powerful. Let me examine further.¡± Intrigued, the entity moves to the sinking body of a newly deceased baby human. In one swift movement the large shadow consumes the child within itself, making its way back towards the open ocean where it can examine the child further. Bringing the child¡¯s soul close to its core, the shadow could glimpse at the last few moments of its life. The scene from before with the two men played in its mind like it was watching from the sky. It could clearly hear the reason the child was taken and why he was to die. Needless to say the shadow was furious. ¡°I can see now why this child was abandoned. Detestable humans do you know no end to your ambition?!¡± anger flared up within the entity, and in that moment the storms over the islands growing that much more intense and powerful. The wind and waves shaking the very earth. The shadow harbored a love for all living things, and the reason this child was killed was wasteful. Fear, greed, and power all cloud a persons mind, allowing them to raise their blades to even children. This was not something that it could forgive so easily. ¡°You need not worry child, for I will grant you new life. Such is the power I, Undine, command as goddess of the seas. Your soul is strong, one of strongest I¡¯ve seen amongst your kind. You are worthy of my blessing. With it you will gain a bit of my power, which you will come to know as you grow.¡± A bright light could be seen emerging from Undine¡¯s core and from that light, Undine began to change form. The form she took was known by many islanders as the apex predator of the seas, the great dire-shark. Dire-sharks were massive in size equipped with teeth that could rend steel. With unmatched speed and stamina, and along with their incredibly rough skin that no spear could penetrate, the dire-shark was a true terror of the deep. Normally about 15m long on average, the form that Undine took was the size of a small mountain, both beautiful and dreadful to behold. Floating just in front of the massive god was the child¡¯s soul, a much smaller light, carefully floating still. Instilling a small amount of her power to the boy¡¯s soul, the sea god¡¯s resurrection would succeed. All she needed was a vessal to carry the soul. There would be no way to know that his soul was tampered with aside from the small triangular mark that would be on the child¡¯s left arm when he was born. The appearance of the now sleeping soul brought great joy to the god, and the storms eased up, if only a bit. Looking at the child¡¯s soul sleeping there, the god knew where to take him. Deep in the Ruby Desert, there was a couple whose faith was unwavering despite being so far from the sea. Undine watched over all her faithful followers and knew the couple was having difficulty bearing a child. ¡°Perfect, that¡¯s where I will take him¡± Undine decided looking at the soul fondly. ¡°There you will be born to a home, and you will be loved.¡± Raising its massive head the light and child slowly rose up, soaring tens of feet above the tumultuous sea. -CRACK- The massive bolt of lightning struck the orb of light and it disappeared without a trace. ¡°Farewell child. I will meet you again when the time comes.¡± ¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª Deep in the Ruby Desert in the oasis city of Roland, an immense storm was underway. The biggest the city had ever seen. More rain had fallen in one minute than in over a decade of rainfall. The raindrops were the size of pebbles and the clouds darkening the midday sky gave an ominous feel to the city. People were rushing to their homes to escape the harsh storm that seemed to arrive from nowhere. Luckily, because the massive aquifer that the city was built upon would flood the streets from time to time, the city could handle major flooding. Once in their homes the people were safe. Thats not to say there wasn¡¯t any property damage. Many of the streets could not handle this kind of downpour and potholes were quickly forming on the cobblestone streets. The whipping wind was harsh enough to tear off the shingles from many of the roofs and trees were being rooted out from the grounds they rested. Despite all the chaos happening outside there was one place where the storm took a back seat. In a manor located near the inner ring of the city, nestled amongst the rest of the middle-class noble houses, there was a large man with a nervous look on his face that sat in front of a hearth with a large shark motif carved into the front of its stone rim. He was a rugged, handsome man with walnut colored air and nice bronze skin. One could tell, despite the shadows and dark circles under his emerald eyes, he was quite intelligent too. The man¡¯s name was Brom. Brom was a member of a very old family in the Ruby Desert called Stonewall. A clan that controlled trade between the Ruby Desert and the Greenwood Kingdom to the east, they were quite powerful. Even as a branch member he held quite a bit of status, though It was much less than the main family, It still granted him a nice home and he didn¡¯t have to worry about how to make a living. He and his wife Natalie have been together for five years now and finally at the age of 20 years old, they were with child. The couple was extremely nervous at first. After years of trying to have a child they feared the worst. That they were unable to produce children. One day however their prayers were answered and Natalie began to show the symptoms of pregnancy. They were overjoyed. Luckily the pregnancy was fairly easy and they had no complications throughout, and today was the day their son would be born. They were ecstatic. They both wanted their first child to be a boy, mainly because it would keep the main family from getting on them about having a son. It seemed childish but Brom didn¡¯t want to be forced to keep making children till he produced a son. If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation. With the help of two skilled 5 star healing mages, provided by the main branch, she shouldn¡¯t have many issues delivering the child. However that didn¡¯t stop Brom from being scared out of his mind. Brom loved his wife more than anything in the world, and even if they couldn¡¯t have children, he would never leave her. If it turned out Natalie couldn¡¯t bear children however the main family would force him to remarry, pushing Natalie down to just being a mistress and not his principal wife. Such was the life of a noble in an old family. Brom could hear Natalie¡¯s screams in the other room. He wanted to be there for the birth but Natalie strictly forbid it, saying he would make her nervous. Natalie wanted to birth the child without the help of Brom. She was strong, and Brom let her do as she pleased. In the delivery room lay a single woman and two nurses beside her, comforting her with healing magic and words, helping her give birth. Natalie was an outstanding beauty with jet black hair with slight curls draping down to the middle of her back. Her beautiful white skin and sky blue eyes along with her almost criminal figure led to many jealous eyes be cast on Brom, who had her all to himself. However, you could hardly say she looked in top shape right now. The pounding thunder and tapping of the rain did little to muffle her screams and pain of giving birth. All except one sound. -CRACK- The sound of lightning striking awfully close startled them both. The first to respond was Brom, ¡°That was too close. It sounded like It came from in front of the door. I¡¯d better check for damage.¡± Brom stood up to walk to the door. He was quite tall. About 1.9m tall and well built, more lean than bulky. He swiftly made his way to the front door and as he reached for the knob the sound he heard through the door stopped him in his tracks. It was a baby''s cries. Brom stopped dead in his tracks. He immediately disregarded the lightning that struck close to his home and immediately ran to the room Natalie was in. He wouldn¡¯t have to be worried about damage anyways. Being a Stonewall, Brom was assigned an elite troop from the main families personal guard. The guards enlisted to his service were at least 6th Star weapon experts. No one could get by without their notice, and any damage to the property would be taken care of by them quickly. Brom took a quick glance at the motif on his fireplace and remembered their patron god Undine. Thanking her from the bottom of his heart. He prayed this whole time that she would watch over them this night and give Natalie the strength to complete the birth. He and his wife were very faithful to Undine, an unpopular god when compared to Gaia or Aero, whom had the most followers among the 4 great gods. But he and Natalie quite liked the sea and even had a beachside marriage ceremony. By the time Brom opened the door the baby was already wrapped up and suckling from Natalies breast. He swallowed hard when he saw the child in his wife¡¯s arms, it was a strange feeling, knowing that that was his child. Brom slowly made his way to the bed his wife was laying in, careful not to disturb the child. Seeing her husband making his way over, Natalie produced a tired smile and said in a weak voice, "Look at him, he''s beautiful." The boy had fair skin with black hair like his mother as well as her sky blue eyes. His dark hair and fair skin along with his cute rose colored lips gave a sort of angelic feeling about the child. Although he had fair skin and many noticeable features of Natalie, it was undoubtedly Broms child. He also had fair skin as a boy. That is, before he got some sun in him. Brom couldn¡¯t stop smiling at the child in his wife''s arms, love emanating from his very soul for this child. Finally when the baby was done eating Brom was allowed to carry him. He looked so small in his large muscular arms. Yet in his heart this child held a great weight. Brom knew immediately that he would be willing to give his life for this child. Then he noticed something strange about the child. ¡±Whats the matter honey?¡± Natalie asks, slowly gaining her strength back with the help of the two healing mages that assisted with her birth. "I can sense a strange energy from our son. How curious." Brom answered. What Brom didn''t know was that he was sensing some of the power granted to the boy by Undine. In fact it was only because his father was a 9 star warrior that he could sense something strange about the boy, even if he didn''t know what it was. "Is he okay? Is something wrong with our son?" Natalie of course was worried that something was wrong because Brom hadn''t explained anything to her. "It''s nothing really, In fact I''m happy! I can sense great potential in our son. Maybe he can even grow to learn magic?" In this world magic existed but only to a select few. Only about 1 in 1000 were born with a knack for it. Even less became successful in it. "That would be great honey! But aren''t you saying things too soon?" Natalie grumbled, just about fully recovered physically, she reached out for the boy taking him from Brom. She was right of course, and Brom felt silly for it. One could only tell if they had an aptitude for magic after their eighth birthday. Not just hours after they were born. -WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!- "Shh, shh" Natalie soothed the child. Feeding him again. "What shall we name him dear?" Brom inquired. "We agreed you would decide once you met the child." ¡°I knew his name the moment i saw him" ¡°Mano¡ that will be his name.¡± Natalie¡¯s voice is filled with deep love as she looked at her new son. ¡°Mano Stonewall. It is fitting for our son. It will be so¡± Brom¡¯s smile was ear to ear as he pulled Natalie¡¯s face in for a kiss. And sitting down on a chair next to his wife''s bed, thats how they spent their first night as a family together. Coincidentally the storm above the city had begun to die down. Almost as if it never happened. Mano was a surprisingly easy child to deal with. He rarely ever cried and didn''t make a fuss in the night. Nothing like the nightmares Natalies family said would happen. His development was also extremely quick, being able to walk and carry small objects at just 5 months old. It was also clear he was going to be an incredibly handsome boy in the future. His skin also started to tint to more of a brown shade, like his father. "Our boys a genius!! Nothing can stop him!!" Brom would often say about his quickly developing son. And like that, five years passed in the blink of an eye... Chapter 2: Myst Training Hall Sorry it took a couple days to post this! I work at night so it''s hard to find time to write. This one is a bit longer than the last one and i had to cut it short so it''s not too crazy long. Anyways if you see any mistakes let me know. I''m going to try and get the next chapter out tomorrow! I promise more Mano in the future. I''m just setting the stage, bear with me please! Thanks fellas :D ---- Chapter 2 ---- Dawn was casting is red glow over Roland city. Roland was a colossal and well built city that bordered a large fresh-water spring spanning nearly 400,000 km in length. The spring, aptly name Jewel, was named after its clear waters and the high value it held. Being directly near an oasis such as this held many advantages for a big city. One being the most important. Water. The desert was unforgiving and housed an endless supply of monsters, built to survive in one of the worst ecosystems in the world. Naturally one would think that the volume of monsters would deter most from venturing into desert. But on the contrary, a caravan equipped with skilled navigators could easily avoid monster packs and some of the nastier creatures. But even if they did come across anything wild, caravans always hired escorts, and a party of at least twelve 6 star warriors could dispatch most normal monsters. The main cause of death in the desert was water. Water was very scarce and proper preparation was needed before one traversed the sands, lest you die of dehydration before you reach your destination. Roland¡¯s streets were already alive with merchants of all races setting up shop, and people making their way to their workplaces. Built in a hexagonal pattern, Roland was separated into eight segments. Each with three layers, the outer layer being the lower class. There weren¡¯t many truly poor people in Roland however and the income difference from the middle and upper class was small. So the standard of living was good. The city centered around the Business district in it¡¯s core. Normally a city like this would house a king or mayor in the center, but Roland was a city that dealt in trade. Business was king. Almost anything could be procured here and many resources made its way trough its walls. The Ruby desert was the quickest way from east to west and vice-versa so many traders set up trade routes through the desert. Many converging on Roland. The natives that lived here mainly found work farming on the coast of Lake Jewel, Merchanting, and Adventuring. Adventurers were mainly hired to escort caravans carrying wares, setting off to fulfill their destinies in the vast world beyond. Roland did not have a traditional military but all citizens were trained to take up arms in a time of war starting at the age of five, and after a certain amount of time, were returned to their normal lives. Due to this, many training halls sprung up all over the city. Each seeking to raise the best warriors, teaching many different styles of the five combat fields, ranging from archery, hunting, subterfuge, swordsmanship, and vanguard training. Those seeking adventure would stay in these halls for many years honing their skills to take on the world. There were many great training halls to whom people flocked. But none were as great as the training hall called Myst. The only training hall located in the business district. Myst was famous because of the quality of training held there. Just being accepted showed you had great potential. Being located in the core of the city allowed businessmen take a look at promising future prospects as well. Today was the day of Myst¡¯s entrance exam and many people gathered. ---- Training Hall Myst¡¯s courtyard was a hive of activity this year. Because of Myst¡¯s fame as the strongest hall in Roland, most families took their child here in hopes they would be accepted as a student. All training halls were also academic schools and even if one completed his training he or she would remain going to classes dealing in mathematics, science, literature, and more. This would last till they became twelve and graduate. The courtyard was filling up with people. It looked like about 500 children would be testing for Myst this year. ¡°It looks like its going there are more kids this year than last year.¡± sighed a large man stationed in front of the crowd. He had blond hair and a short beard with a large scar across his forehead. ¡°You don¡¯t seem that excited Master Arron.¡± An old looking man pointed ears and a long blond beard pats the other, named Arron, on the shoulder. ¡°Chief Takk.¡± Master Arron stands up and bows respectfully to the old man in greeting. ¡°It¡¯s just troublesome to sift out the promising children from all the weak.¡± Sighed Arron again. ¡°I can only hope we get some good students this year though.¡± At this Chief Takk orders Master Arron with a kind smile, ¡°Start the festivities in 15 minutes, i¡¯ll be inside with the others.¡± Turning around, Chief Takk enters the training hall¡¯s main entrance. ---- Amongst the crowd many people were gathered, and among them was a large Bronze skinned man holding the hand of a small child just a shade lighter than himself. Mano was a bit taller than the average five year old at about 1.2m tall. He was nice green tunic over his brown shorts. Along with his brown leather boots that cuffed just above the ankle, he was incredibly cute and many of the mothers in the crowd were staring at him with hunger in their eyes. Ready to just pick him up and snuggle him into their bosoms. Mano had shoulder length black hair held up in a ponytail in the back. He was starting to look a little like his father with long eyelashes and nice full lips. His sky blue eyes got slightly darker around the pupils, making them look deep. Much to Brom¡¯s dismay, Mano¡¯s cute looks caused many of the maids in the family fawn over him and often had him dressing up in many different outfits such as butler suits, animals costumes, and adventurer garbs. Natalie didn¡¯t mind because Mano liked the fun maids. ¡°Daddy! Look at all the people!¡± Mano excitedly looks around at all the unfamiliar faces. The two of them together were fit for a painting, a handsome man escorting his adorable son to school. Many of the women looked at them. Most at the cute Mano, while others looked longingly at the handsome Brom. Brom didn¡¯t notice their husbands staring daggers at his back and easily answered his excited child laughing, ¡°Of course there are a lot of people here son, Myst is the best training hall in the city!¡± ¡°Do you think I will be able to get in Daddy?¡± Questioned Mano, looking up at his father. ¡°Well, I was made to come here as a child by my father and his before him. I¡¯m sure you will pass. I mean me and your mother have been keeping you quite active since you walk. So physically it should be no problem! However that¡¯s not all they look for.¡± Brom answered. ¡°What else are they looking for?¡± Mano¡¯s wondered. ¡°Well there are many masters here and the children accepted are all expected to join a specific field of combat classes, and only a certain number of slots are open. The masters are quite picky about talent and some of the slots never get filled.¡± Brom listed the five main combat proficiencies to Mano. ¡°Do you have any idea which one you want to learn?¡± ¡°I¡¯m going to grow up big like you Dad! I want to join the Vanguard ranks!¡± Mano says with confidence. ¡°Hou~?¡± Brom raised an eyebrow at his son, ¡°The vanguard is always on the front lines you know? They live on the edge and every split second counts, there¡¯s no room for the hesitant you know?¡± Brom questions his boy. ¡°I can do it! It sounds so exciting.¡± A fire is lit in Mano¡¯s eyes. Determined. Brom was filled with pride. The vanguard isn¡¯t held in very high regard. Most adventurers think they are just muscle bound idiots who don¡¯t have much skill. While it is one of the easier fields to pick up, it¡¯s far from being easy to master. You have to know how to accurately block strikes endlessly while also dishing out pain yourself. It takes extreme dedication that many other proficiencies lack. A successful vanguard can protect his comrades and lead the charge in battle, being able to face dangers head on, so his party doesn¡¯t have to. Support the creativity of authors by visiting Royal Road for this novel and more. ¡°Hahaha! I was foolish to questioned you son!¡± A hearty laughter exits Brom. ¡°Your will is just like you mothers! I met her here too and she also joined the vanguard. It¡¯s in your blood! You will definitely pass!¡± Brom encourages his son. ¡°Un!¡± Mano nods with determination. A short time went by with Mano examining all the people until it was time for the exam to begin. ¡°ahem, EXUSE ME EVERYONE!!¡± A large man with blond hair and a nasty scare on his head addresses the crowd. It was Master Arron. Everyone stops what they were doing and are now listening attentively. What powerful charisma this man has. ¡°I am known as Master Arron! I will be here to administer the entrance exam.¡± Excited whispers could be heard from around the crowd. Master Arron was known as one of the top swordsmen in the country. One of few high master ranked swordsmen. He was the instructor of the most popular course of study, swordsmanship! ¡°AHEM¡± Everyone quieted down. ¡°Good. Now I will need the families to exit the courtyard and leave your children here. We will give each of you a magical device that buzzes when you shall come and receive your child.¡± The parents all line up and take a small copper looking disk with a number on it from one of the assistants attending after they link each one to a child, whom they put the corresponding number on, so they don¡¯t accidentally call the wrong parent. The families knew that the training hall was a safe place so they made their way out. Going out to explore the business district while their children tested. Leaving the children standing there awkwardly waiting for instruction. Arron looks down at all the prospects. About 500 in total. ¡°LINE UP!!¡± Boomed Arron and the kids lined up shoulder to shoulder instinctively, fear in their eyes. Master Arron began to make his way down the line, examining each child slowly. ¡°You, you, you there, you and you, aaand also you. You fail. Go to the gate and have one of the assistants call your parents.¡± ¡°What! But we haven¡¯t done anything yet! How can you fail us like this!¡± One of the children starts to protest. ¡°BECAUSE I¡¯M THE MASTER HERE!!¡± Master Arron boomed. ¡°Your weak! I can tell from your posture that all you do all day is sit around. From the fat you have around your neck I can tell you don¡¯t eat healthy! NOW GET OUT.¡± The pudgy child began to cry and ran to the front of the gate to the assistant. Not wanting to get yelled at the other children that failed hung their heads and meekly made their way as well. Master Arron turns around and addresses all the children. ¡°What I say is law! Do you understand!?¡± The scared children nod frantically in compliance. ¡°Good¡± Arron put a smile on his face and be can to examine the children again. ¡°You, you, you...¡± He continued to make his way down the line failing the students. If he deemed you acceptable he would just examine you and move on. In the end there were 43 students left. Making his way to the front of the crowd Master Arron again addresses the group of children smiling broadly. ¡°Congratulations! You passed!¡± ¡°Huh?¡± Most of the kids were confused looking around at one another. Only one didn¡¯t seem to be confused. ¡°YAY!!¡± The raven haired child jumping in air in glee was none other than Mano. The other kids disregarded this carefree kid that just accepted this like it was nothing. How could he just accept this? No one knew why they passed and wanted to know. They weren¡¯t satisfied in just passing, wanting to know what they did right. ¡°I can tell a persons worth physically just by looking, if you must know¡± Arron answered matter-of-factly. ¡°Kids these days just just accept things as they are without questioning us adults, like that boy over there.¡± Pointing at Mano who was happily listening to Master Arron. ¡°Boy.¡± Arron questioned Mano ¡°What¡¯s your name?¡± ¡°Mano Stonewall sir!¡± Mano straightened up in attention to Master Arron. ¡°Haha! No wonder! You have your father¡¯s face.¡± ¡°You know Father?¡± Mano was intrigued at the man who seemed to be familiar with his Father ¡°Yes as a matter of fact. We went here together once upon a time. He was a few years my senior though, I was always jealous of how aloof and free he was. Quite the smooth-talker that one, did you know he once had one of the female teachers pining after him? To think the rascal who used to have a dame in each arm settled down.¡± Getting back on topic Master Arron asked Mano what was really on his mind. ¡°Did you do some kind of special training? Your overall physical traits were stronger than all the other kids that came out today.¡± ¡°Well I often play with the maid-aunties at home. I like to explore and climb trees too!¡± Answers Mano proudly. So this kid is just doing normal kid stuff. Impossible his body¡¯s potential is incredible, like some kind of monster. ¡°That sounds like fun Mano.¡± I¡¯ll just forget it for now. ¡°Alright kids lets start the next phase!¡± Walking to the Training halls front door Master Arron opens the large double doors to reveal an even larger space than the 300 square meter courtyard. They were now on Myst¡¯s main school ground. It was massive and was easily 3,200 meters across. Standing in a clearing to the left were four people of differing races with an old looking man standing off to the side. Master Arron lead the children to sit in the space in front of the four people, taking his spot among them. ¡°We five are the head combat instructors here in the Myst training hall. We all specialize in a specific field of study. From archery, hunting, subterfuge, swordsmanship, and vanguard training. We will introduce ourselves and our specialization and when we are done explaining, you may gather around the instructor of your choice. We will be instructing you through your years here at Myst.¡± The instructors begin to introduce themselves. The first one to introduce them self is Master Arron. ¡°I am Master Arron, the swordsmanship instructor. We swordsman live a life of honor and glory. Striking down the opposition with blades ranging from rapiers to great-swords. Our role is that of a leader and damage dealer in parties.¡± Finishing his introduction a tall man with fair skin and pointed ears steps up. There were many races in this world from elves, dwarves, beast-men, halflings and many others. Roland, being a trade hub, had all kinds of people coming in and out all the time. Race wasn¡¯t a big issue and you weren¡¯t discriminated for being different. Everyone could contribute to society. The man stepped up, ¡°I am Master Feralis, the archery instructor. Archers live on the back line. Don¡¯t let that fool you into thinking we are cowards. A skilled archer is incredibly deadly and a skilled on can shoot an apple falling off a tree effectively at 100 meters away. Our role in the party is to pick off the back line of the enemy while seeking shelter behind the frontline.¡± The next one to step up was a dark skinned human in a cloak. ¡°I am Master Tethys. I am the subterfuge instructor. Otherwise known as rogues we support the party by incapacitating our enemies and causing chaos in the battlefield.¡± One of the last two people steps up, a female dwarf accompanied by a large lizard steps up and introduces herself. ¡°I am Master Dorna, the hunting instructor. We specialize in scouting and tracking for our parties as well as setting traps. Our role in combat is survival. We stay in the mid-line and pick off stragglers while our pets help out the front or back lines.¡± The final person to step up is a lithe human woman about 176 cm tall with pointed ears and beautiful features. Casting a cold look to all the children. No visible emotion on her face. ¡°I am Master Kreig the Vanguard instructor... I do not accept disciples.¡± ...What?! ---- Chapter 3: First Day at School Sorry for being a couple hours late guys! I was doing a bit of editing on this to make sure I didn''t look like a fool. Quick question. Would you like to see more of a first person perspective from the eyes of Mano? Or is the way it''s going now fine. I''m leaning towards wanting to put more of an effort in making it more first person, but idk if it''ll sound weird when accompanied by the way I''m writing now. Any suggestions? Anyways I''m really tired. Thanks fellas ---- Chapter 3 ---- Standing near the entrance to Myst Training Hall¡¯s school ground are five people. Four of them being this year¡¯s combat instructors and the other being Chief Takk. ¡°I wonder how many students we will get this year?¡± The dwarf woman, Master Dorna, wonders to the rest of the crew. ¡°We can only hope for a few. Swordsmanship is so popular not many want to do anything else...¡± Sighed the Master Feralis, the archery instructor. ¡°Look on the bright side. At least the magical universities only open up to twelve year olds, even though the test for magical affinity is at the age of eight. If not kids would just leave school then and we wouldn¡¯t have any students past eight except the ones who fail.¡± Master Tethys interjects. ¡°I guess that¡¯s true but only one in a thousand have the knack anyways, so it¡¯s not likely. Thanks for the consolation though.¡± Master Feralis smiles in reply. Master Tethys and Master Feralis are old adventuring partners so they care for each other a lot. Master Dorna turns to the vanguard instructor this year, an elf woman name Krieg, ¡°How many students do you think it will join the vanguard this year Master Krieg?¡± ¡°These days kids are all weak, with no determination. I will not accept just anyone.¡± Master Krieg''s face is cold. ¡°I¡¯m not going to waste my time on kids who are just doing this for fun. They will be tested and only the ones that succeed will I teach.¡± So far Krieg hasn¡¯t accepted any students in the ten years she has taught at Myst. Her test is just too hard for a five year old to handle. ¡°Fair enough. The vanguard is a rough position anyways¡± Master Dorna responds. It is not required for a teacher to accept students if he or she deems none are suitable. The instructors here are the cream of the crop so their methods won¡¯t be questioned. However, one can¡¯t decide until they test the applicants. For example, Master Arron asks each child what their dream is and decides on that whether or not a child is suitable. Most pass. On the other hand, Master Dorna takes her kids through rigorous training regime in the mountains. Not many pass her tests. The masters do whatever they deem necessary to grow fantastic talents. Naturally if a teacher doesn¡¯t accept you, you¡¯re expelled and need to find a new training hall to study at. After mingling for a while longer they get the signal that the students that passed will be arriving shortly. Lining up, the instructor await the new class to arrive. ¡°Hou~?¡± Chief Takk raises an eyebrow. ¡°More students this year I see. How promising.¡± Most years only around 20 students are accepted into Myst. But this year there are over twice that many, at 43. Time to Introduce the instructors. ---- I PASSED!! I¡¯m so excited the uncle examining us let me into Myst! Mano thought to himself. This place is so big I wonder if i¡¯ll get lost? Mano idly followed along with the rest of the kids to the group of people in the school yard. Including Master Arron there were six strong looking fellows in front of the children. Each of them began their introductions and the children listened attentively. Wow that man with the bow¡¯s body looks so powerful. But look at that short lady too, she¡¯s got a serpent as a pet! I wonder if i can get one of those in the vanguard? Mano was bursting with excitement thinking of all the cool adventures these people must have gone on. I wonder if the vanguard instructor is that pretty lady to the side. She¡¯s almost as pretty as mother. I hope she¡¯s nice Mano figured the elf woman was the vanguard instructor by looking at the equipment the others were wearing. For some reason though, the Master only wore light leather and cloth clothes. Oh she¡¯s stepping up! I can¡¯t wait to hear what she has to say! ¡°I am Master Kreig the Vanguard instructor... I do not accept disciples.¡± HUH? Mano¡¯s jaw dropped. Some of the other children were confused as well. None of them wanted to be a vanguard but at the same time didn¡¯t know why she wouldn¡¯t accept any of them. Then something strange happened. Whenever they looked at her they became very afraid. Like a monster was looking at them, ready to pounce and kill them at any moment. What Master Krieg was actually doing was releasing killing intent on the children. This was her test. A vanguard must be able to show no fear, even in the face of an impossible enemy. Her test was actually a quite effective and many of the other vanguard instructors slapped their head wondering why they hadn¡¯t thought of it. Che- if you can¡¯t handle this much how can you stand on the front lines where you are the first line of defense! Your comrades lives are in your hands! Master Krieg looks down on the children with distain. ¡°You may now choose your instructors children!¡± Master Arron smiled, and all the instructors spread out to give the children space to split up. Most the children, twenty of them, went to Master Arron. He had them each line up and begin listing their dreams off to him. The rest of the 23 children equally split up amongst the Archery, Subterfuge, and Hunting Instructors. Being led off to take their corresponding trials. All except one. ---- Watching the children departing Master Krieg sighed. Kids these days really have no guts! That killing intent wasn¡¯t even that of a 3 star beast, if I released real killing intent they would have all passed out from shock. Well, time to go then. Master Krieg turned toward the vanguard wing of the school where she resided and was going to start walking. Until she felt a small tug on the edge of her sleeve. ¡°Huh?¡± Surprised Krieg turned back around. Only to see a boy standing there shivering a little in fear, but didn¡¯t show it. Mano looked up at her with his big blue eyes. ¡°C-can I be a vanguard please?¡± Master Krieg¡¯s eyebrow twitched, and if you looked closely you could see her cheeks take on a slightly pink hue. She quickly regained composure and recollected her thoughts while releasing her killing intent. The boy became visibly more comfortable. This boy, he clearly is afraid of the killing intent I released. But he stood up and approached me anyways. Heh, looks like I was wrong about this bunch. I guess this one is fine. ¡°What¡¯s your name kid?¡± ¡°Mano ma¡¯am¡± The boy happily replied. ¡°Fine. Follow me, you are the first child to approach me in my ten years here. My training is harsh, I hope your ready for pain¡± Master Krieg responds with a slight smile. ¡°Yes master!!¡± Mano happily responds. Krieg is leading the child, facing away from him but if you looked you could see her cheeks were pink again. Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. The reason she was so flustered was because of a certain reason. Master Krieg absolutely loves cute and adorable things, and the child that was now her disciple was the most adorable child she¡¯s ever seen. It took all her strength not to strangle him with hugs when he approached her and asked her to be his master in a shy voice. What a weird hobby quirk of the most powerful vanguard instructor in Myst history. ---- Mano was happily following in step with his new master. Wow she was so scary at first! It took a lot of strength to approach her! Mano was thinking to himself. For some reason though for a split second I got the same feeling from her as i do from the maid-aunties back home. This school really big though. We have been walking for nearly 15 minutes and the only thing i can see is a small building. Is that the vanguard building? Mano exclaims to himself as the two approach a small log cabin on the edge of a small pond. The cabin was quaint with nice wood walls and a shingled roof. Weight sets and workout equipment could be scene outside, along with an outdoor bathroom and water basin. ¡°This will be your new classroom. Every year is separated to a different building based on class size and specialization. Seeing as you are the only vanguard student this year, and it will be only me teaching you for the next seven years, this is enough. You will start tomorrow with your training so pack some things. This is where you will live till you graduate. You will still have holidays off of course. But aside from that, starting tomorrow you eat, sleep, and bleed here." She said that last phrase with a menacing smile. Knowing just how hard her training can be. Mano shivered with excitement. Surprising Master Krieg. ¡°I definitely wont let you down master!¡± Mano bowed deeply. ---- -The next day- Man yesterday was so fun. Mom and Dad went crazy when they found out i got accepted as a vanguard student at Myst Training Hall. Mano thought while happily trotting along the trail that he and Master Krieg walked yesterday. Mano didn¡¯t have many possessions that he was attached to at home so he packed lightly. 6 pairs of everyday clothes, 2 clothes for formal events, and a small coin purse filled with his life savings. In total it was a lot more that he thought. A whopping 30 gold pieces! Saving money is great! Mano didn¡¯t know that Brom and Natalie each put one gold piece in his savings every time he saved on himself, which is what led him to having a bigger savings than he thought. It got the point across though. Now Mano valued saving and like watching it grow bigger. I wonder what my first day of training is going to be like. I hope it¡¯s something fun. Mano finally made it to the cabin. Now that I look at it, this place is pretty nice. I¡¯m happy it looks homey. I don¡¯t know if I¡¯d like a stuffy room with two roommates like the guys at the swordsmanship hall. Opening the door and taking a step inside cabin he is confronted with a large shadow. Master Krieg is looking down on him with a cold look in her eyes. ¡°You¡¯re late.¡± Mano was confused. ¡°But master, I thought you said to arrive here just after dawn?¡± ¡°Whatever time I assign to you, I expect you to be there twenty minutes early. I¡¯m going to put you through a lot of work, you will need to be warmed up so you don¡¯t get injured.¡± Kreig seemed to ease up when it came to teaching. Mano being adorable definitely had nothing to do with it. Well, maybe a little bit. ¡°That being said, you were late so as punishment go run twelve laps around the pond.¡± ¡°Yes master!¡± Mano dropped his things and was already heading for the door. ¡°Wait! You forgot your uniform.¡± Krieg motioned to a pair of work out clothes on the bench near the door. ¡°Put it on before you leave.¡± ¡°Okay.¡± Mano picks up the clothes which all together weighed about 7 kg. ¡°Whoa, these clothes are heavy! I have to run in these?¡± ¡°Those are nothing, by the time you graduate you will be able to wear 90 kg clothes during everyday activities. For now you will start with these. Wear the clothes I¡¯ve prepared everyday while you are here, you have many pairs.¡± Master Krieg felt proud of herself on the inside. She managed to make weighted clothes that all look like regular clothing to people not wearing it. Mano returned with the clothes on, ¡°I¡¯m off master.¡± He ran off to train like the wind. I can¡¯t wait to get stronger! Master Krieg let out a wry smile as Mano ran off. ¡°That kid must like pain, each lap around the pond is about 1.5 km.¡± She laughed to herself and sat on a chair outside of the cabin over looking the pond. Mano ran a lot everyday at home. He was an active child and often went exploring and climbing trees in the garden. Theres no way running was going to be hard for him. At least, that¡¯s what he thought. ¡°Gee this pond sure is big, one lap is takes a long time, I¡¯m already getting tired.¡± Mano underestimated the distance of the run and over exerted himself in the first couple laps. When you add on the 7kg clothes he was wearing it was a wonder he didn¡¯t collapse already. It was getting progressively harder to run as he finished each lap. ¡°I¡¯m going to seriously have to learn to pace myself here.¡± He began to slow down. ¡°Hey! I see you slacking there! I expect you to work like your life depends on it! Four more laps!¡± Master Krieg yelled to him as he passed by on his eighth lap. ¡°I¡¯m in trouble.¡± Mano thought to himself as he picked up his pace. He wasn¡¯t going fast now by any means, a five year old can only go so fast before failure. The main thing is he was pushing his body to the limits. ¡°Haah, Haah.¡± Mano was collapsed on the ground after he completed his laps. Every one of his muscles were on fire and shaking slightly. ¡°You were too slow! I¡¯m not going to teach you any form of combat training till we have your body in tip top shape. If you¡¯re determined, I should have you ready in just about 3 years time. Come now, we can¡¯t skimp on your academic training. You will do push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and flexibility exercises while I teach you.¡± Master Krieg had a wicked grin on her face. Like a demon. ¡°Y-yes Master.¡± Mano weakly attempted to get up but his muscles gave out on him. ¡°Here before you get up.¡± Holding a small ceramic cup with a dangerous looking green liquid inside, she offered it to Mano. ¡°Drink this, it¡¯s a special recovery tea that will help you continue training while also providing you with the right nutrients to grow.¡± She brings the cup to his lips and feeds him some of the medicine. ¡°Ugh, It tastes gross master!¡± Mano wanted to spit the liquid out but stopped when he could feel his strength returning much stronger than before. ¡°Wow! This stuff is great! How did you make it?¡± ¡°It¡¯s a secret, but I will teach you in due time. With it I will be able to put you through more hell than you can imagine.¡± Master Krieg had a cold smile. ¡°Now let¡¯s get you inside so I can teach you some mathematics. Just so you know every question I ask that you get wrong, is going to cost you.¡± For the first time in Mano¡¯s life, he felt like he might die. Chapter 4: First Rival? Chapter 4 is here! This chapter is pretty long and like the last two I had to cut it into two parts in order to not flood a post. :D As for the questions regarding why Mano is Master Krieg''s student even though "she doesn''t accept disciples." All i can say is just because you teach someone the basic way of doing something doesn''t mean you teach them the way that you would do it. Anyways chapter 5 is coming soon! Thanks fellas! ---- -Chapter 4- *Huff Huff* The sound of Mano training is the only sound that could be heard in the crisp morning air over the vanguard training dorm at Myst Training Hall. Growing to an above average height of 137 cm, Mano has grown well these past years. Master Krieg took care of his hair and cut it into a cute style with 4 cm hair on top with a small fade to the side. He was taking on more of his fathers features now, most notably with his strong jawline and his above average physique. Mano hasn¡¯t met many kids his age that were as tall as he. Though there were some among the vanguard wing and a few in swordsmanship and archery, they could be counted on two hands only. His looks have only grown with age. He adopted the best features from his parents, who were good looking by themselves, and rumor spread of the blue eyed prince that lived in the forest of Myst¡¯s training grounds. Mano was only eight years old however, and his training consumed his life. These rumors never reached his ears. Not that any of them would affect him, he was an honest child. The scene of the child training came to a stop, and Mano stood up from his exercises smiling. ¡°Finally! I was able to complete the daily routine with 180 kg clothes on!¡± Mano had a satisfied expression on his face while he wiped the sweat off his brow. ¡°You¡¯ve come a long way these past three years Mano. Being able to already wear 160 kg clothes during everyday activities. You show great potential, physical potential fitting of a vanguard practitioner.¡± Mano¡¯s teacher Master Krieg nods with satisfaction. ¡°Freshen up and follow me into the cabin. It¡¯s time to take your finals.¡± Master Krieg turned around on a heel and headed off toward the cabin entrance. ¡°Yes master!¡± Mano quickly stripped down and took a shower, revealing his toned chest and abdominal muscles. It didn¡¯t look excessive though and he still had a small layer of baby fat still on his body. Master Krieg was smart and, with the help of the tea she often gave him, trained him in different flexibility exercises so that his training wouldn¡¯t abnormally affect his growth. His triangular birthmark on his left shoulder seemed to have grown with him and a new triangle seemed to be forming at the bottom corner of the current triangle. At first Mano and his family were concerned about this mark left on his arm but after multiple doctor visits, It was concluded the mark wasn¡¯t harmful to his health. After cleaning up and donning his 160 kg clothes Mano headed into the cabin. ¡°Alright take a seat Mano.¡± Master Krieg was standing in front of a chalkboard stationed in front of a lone desk and chair. Mano complied quietly. ¡°Not only have you done well with your physical fitness endeavors, but you have also excelled in your academics. What I have in front of you is the final exam for the academic portion of Myst Training Hall. If you pass this test the only thing that you and I will be focusing on is your vanguard training.¡± Master Krieg¡¯s eyes flashed a cold light and Mano felt a shiver run down his spine from her killing intent. He knew that if he didn¡¯t pass this exam he would be given worse pain than what he has endured up till now. While the rest of the students at Myst Training Hall were diligently training in their selected class and putting academics second. Mano was working his body to the core while studying the academics alone. This led to Mano taking the final exam for the school four years earlier than most. If he passed this exam right now, he would fully immerse himself in the vanguard lifestyle. ¡°Alright, this exam is normally supposed to be done in three hours. I¡¯m giving you half that. Begin.¡± Krieg sat on the desk next to the chalkboard and started a clock. Mano¡¯s pencil moved like fire across the paper as he answered each of the questions as quickly as possible. He would pause now and again on particularly tough problems and nibble on his bottom lip in thought. Mano couldn¡¯t see it but a rose cheeked Master Krieg was breathing heavily at the sight. She was merciless when it came to training and learning, but when all that was done she couldn¡¯t help but be kind to the sweet child that was her student. After about an hour Mano put his pencil down. A nervous expression on his face. ¡°I¡¯m done master.¡± Lucky for her, Master Krieg already wiped the smile off her face. Her cool expression returning. ¡°Alright. Your free for rest of the day while I get these scored and the results reflect in your records. Return back here before sundown. Make sure you don¡¯t wander off to the other vanguard building though, I don¡¯t want you to catch any of their bad habits.¡± Mano almost thought he hadn¡¯t heard her correctly. Other kids were often given free time in the day. That wasn¡¯t the case for Mano, who was constantly training in order to reach Master Kriegs standards. But now that he has, he would finally have his own free period! ¡°Thank you Master!¡± Mano ran up to Master Krieg and gave her a hug. His head resting in her bosom. ¡°I¡¯ll be back before sundown!¡± Turning around happily he runs out of the front door of the cabin. He couldn¡¯t see it now but Master Krieg was rolling around the floor, screaming ¡°Kya!¡± and ¡°HE¡¯S SO CUTE!¡± Master Krieg takes her job very seriously and didn¡¯t hold back in his instruction, but that last attack was too much. It was the same sort of feeling she got when she saw cute baby animals. At least he wasn¡¯t there to see it. ---- ¡°Wow, now that I have my first free period I wonder what i should do?¡± Mano was wondering to himself while he was walking down the trail to Myst¡¯s main road. ¡°I know! I¡¯ll go explore some of the other wings!¡± With his new goal in his head he happily made his way towards the other wings. ¡°Look at that guy!¡± ¡°Wow! He¡¯s so cute!¡± ¡°Do you think he goes to our wing?¡± ¡°What class is he in?¡± ¡°He¡¯s looking this way!¡± ¡°You think he has a girlfriend?¡± ¡°I wonder if he will let us watch him practice whatever it is he does.¡± These were just some of the things the girls were whispering to each other as Mano was walking by. He was already hounded by girls wanting to know more about him as he made his way through each of the wings. Mano wasn¡¯t used to all the attention he was getting but he definitely wanted more friends, so he treated all the girls kindly. Although shy at first, he honestly responded to all their questions. Not pushing them away when they wanted a hug although the closeness made him feel a little uncomfortable. Mano thoroughly captured many of the girls hearts with his innocent and outgoing attitude, garnering many glares from the boys. After spending about an hour at each wing, absorbing all the sights and differences, he was now at the final wing of his adventure. The swordsmanship wing. ¡°Man this place is really big! I guess I should expect nothing less from the most popular profession in the school.¡± Mano was thoroughly impressed with the ornate building that housed the swordsmanship students. ¡°From what I heard our first year in the annual arena competition should be starting next year. I wonder if the students in my year are training for it now.¡± What Mano was referring to was an annual tournament held to test the skills of the students. There were many competitions that tested the skills of the students such as archery competitions, feats of acrobatics, and even tracking competitions. All of these games were used to showcase the skills of each combat specialty, and It displayed new talent to the whole city. Scouts from mercenary companies and merchant groups often attended hoping to get first pick of the best newcomers when they graduated. While many of these patrons would attend every event, there was one event that all scouts and fans would attend. The annual swordsmanship melee. The melee was a single elimination tournament where one student would face off against another with blunted weapons. Fighting till a ring out or until one party is in no condition to fight, or admits defeat. A team of magicians specializing in healing were on standby for the inevitable injuries incurred during the tournament. A big reason the melee was so popular was due in part to the popularity and favor placed on the swordsmanship profession, but also because the vanguard also participated. So far a vanguard has never come in first place in a melee, but that wasn¡¯t the point. The melee was the perfect stage to showcase a future vanguards amazing defensive potential. A vanguard mainly won rounds by out lasting their opponents, wearing them down until they are unable to fight. Being a vanguard was tough and not many kids have a knack for it, so many drop out early on. Any vanguard practitioner that even lasted three rounds raised eyebrows and were almost guaranteed employment when they graduated. If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it. Even though the first year you can participate is at nine years old, Mano wasn¡¯t confident he¡¯d do well. Many of the students would have been studying their art for four years by then, Mano wasn¡¯t going to fool himself and think that he could do well with only one year of training ahead of him. Putting those thoughts aside Mano was wandering the swordsmanship campus searching for the arena. This was the biggest campus so naturally the arena was located here as well. ¡°Hey there! Are you lost?¡± A sweet voice could be heard coming from behind him. Mano turned to the sound of the voice to be greeted by a cute looking girl just about his height. She was tall but Mano could tell from the way she carried herself that she was older than he was, perhaps ten or eleven years old. A whole three years older than he was. She had short sand-colored hair that was fell lightly just above her shoulders cute slightly angled light brown eyes, one could tell in a couple years she¡¯d be a sight for sore eyes. ¡°I¡¯m Mano, eight years old from the vanguard wing. Nice to meet you!¡± Mano bowed to the girl addressing him. ¡°I¡¯m on my first free period since I¡¯ve enrolled and, since the melee is next year, I wanted to check out how the swordsmanship wing¡¯s training is going.¡± Mano showed a smile to the girl. ¡°Well your in luck! I¡¯m actually heading to the arena now, I can lead you there if you like.¡± The girl said to Mano before stopping herself, ¡°Oh, how rude of me, I¡¯m Saria Rosewood. Eleven years old and part of the swordsmanship wing.¡± Saria began to lead Mano down through the school grounds toward the arena. Needless to say they gathered a lot of attention, who was this dark haired prince being led around by the number one genius in swordsmanship and also number one beauty in the school Saria Rosewood? ¡°So this is really your first free period since being here for three years?¡± Saria asks curiously. ¡°Yeah actually, my master said I wasn¡¯t ready to learn any vanguard basics so I¡¯ve just been training my body and pursuing academics. In fact I just took my academic final.¡± Mano laughed in response. ¡°You¡¯ve already taken your final?! I¡¯ve always had problems with academics.¡± Saria shakes her head in mock shame. ¡°I¡¯m three years your senior and your already smarted than me.¡± This kind of idle and good atmosphere only led to more boys declaring Mano as their sworn enemy. Like this the two finally made it to a large circular building that was the arena. The arena was built during the founding of Myst academy and even though it was constantly used, it was in pristine condition. The center of the arena was a large open space that housed four separate platforms made of stone that could be lowered flush to the ground or moved together to create one large platform. Bordering this was the viewing area. In the front row viewing the platform surrounded by a crowd of eight year olds was where Mano and Saria sat, happily talking to each other while watching the training. On the platform they could make out two people facing each other with swords drawn. One was a stout dwarven child with a two-hand sword and the other was a boy with long blond hair and a smug look on his face, facing the dwarf with a rapier in hand. ¡°We got here just in time. Watch carefully Mano this is the number one sword student in your year, Charles. Though he¡¯s arrogant, his skill is real. He will be a tough opponent if you face him this year. He can even take down many of the students in my class.¡± Saria informed Mano, who was already watching intently. Saria laughed and scooted a little closer to Mano, resting her weight up against him. There weren¡¯t any romantic intentions however so Mano didn¡¯t pay any mind. Mano had a strange sense of being able to sense the presence and strength of others, he gained this ability after falling asleep in the bath one day for a whole night after pushing himself passed his limits everyday. Thats also when his birth mark grew the additional small triangle at the bottom of the big central one. Although for some reason he would always recover the fastest whenever he was in water he just chocked it up to Master Krieg tampering with the water. Because he never needed to use this sense he didn¡¯t quite get a grasp of it yet, and it would activate on it¡¯s own. ---- Che-. This is so meaningless, how can this peasant hope to defeat me, Charles Roland, in a match? The kid with blond hair was thinking as he made his way up the stairs to the platform. There is no student as great as I in the school. Charles looked at the dwarf child in front of him in disdain. The two were finally face to face with their weapons drawn. ¡°Why don¡¯t you just lay on the ground and accept defeat? I don¡¯t want to waste my energy on trash like you.¡± Charles groupies snickered at the dwarf, looking down on him. The dwarf puffed up his chest, clearly angry. ¡°Charles, you watch your mouth. This time I will definitely rub that smug look off your face!¡± The dwarf spat back. ¡°Try if you must, it will only be in vain.¡± Charles arrogantly flicked his long blond hair, turning to the crowd. There was a group of girls in the stands near Mano and Saria that cried out in glee at this. Charles was very popular among the girls and was quite the playboy. As a noble living in the inner ring of the city he had everything with money, future power, and looks. This added with his talent with the blade only added to his popularity. Looks wise he was nearly as good as Mano, the difference being Charles knew he was good looking and Mano didn¡¯t. He had been by himself in class three years after all. At this point he could see Saria heading down the stairs of the stands towards a seat. Not noticing Mano behind her. ¡°Hou? My beautiful Saria came to the arena just to see me? I will definitely give her a good show.¡± Charles smiles to himself. Saria was the prettiest girl at Myst and also the best swordsman. Charles thought it only natural she become his. He was the strongest swordsman in his grade and had great potential. Charles always got what he wanted, and Saria would be his. The battle was about to begin. Master Aaron was overseeing his class as normal and began the countdown. ¡°3... 2... 1...¡± ¡°Begin!¡± Master Aaron said with a booming voice. The first one to make a move was the dwarf. Quickly closing the distance with his short stocky legs and blade hung low to the side he swiped upwards in a diagonal slash. Turning his hips to transfer the most power to his strike. Charles saw this coming however and dodged the strike artfully. Bringing his rapier down quickly targeting the space between the dwarf¡¯s neck and shoulder. Narrowly blocking the slash with his two-hand sword the dwarf retreated back leaving a 5m gap between the two. Just now he was really close to losing the match. In Master Aaron¡¯s class, any strike that would have been fatal with a real blade ended in a loss. ¡°Oh? You realized your stupid mistake of coming in close?¡± Charles laughed. ¡°Impressive I didn¡¯t know bugs like you were capable of higher thinking.¡± Charles berated the dwarf. ¡°My turn to get on the offensive then! You won¡¯t get away!¡± Exerting a pressure on the dwarf stopped him in his tracks, unable to move. Charles pushed off the ground with the balls of his feet with great force, closing the distance in a second. Within a breath Charles demanded of the boy, ¡°Sit down dog!¡± and swiped at the boy six times faster than others could see. Two strikes on the neck and two to each knee brought the boy down writhing in pain, dropping his sword. ¡°Sleep!¡± In one moment Charles stomped on the young dwarfs head, knocking him out cold. ¡°That¡¯s enough. It¡¯s Charles¡¯ win.¡± Master Aaron said with a sigh. He couldn¡¯t deny Charles¡¯ talent for the blade but he still disapproved how poorly he treated his peers. ¡°Thank you master!¡± Charles bowed quickly to Master Aaron and swiftly turned to see the girl he would make his. Only she was now leaning on a boy who was happily talking to her about what he thought of the match, while she responded smiling. ¡°Man! That was amazing! Did you see how fast that Charles guy moved? It was almost hard to track with my eyes! It makes my blood boil with excitement just watching them!¡± Mano was extremely happy to have seen the fight take place. Laughing at what Mano said Saria replied, ¡°Hou? So you could see his movements, and clearly at that? Mano, are you sure you haven¡¯t trained in combat yet?¡± Their friendly exchange was interrupted by a loud voice. ¡°Hey! Get your hands off my girl!¡± ---- Chapter 5: Duel! Here you go! I said chapter 5 would be coming soon! This one also was longer than i expected. I just can''t seem to stop writing! Anyways I''m still fairly new to writing action sequences and hope you stick with me! Thanks Fellas! -Chapter 5- ¡°Hey! Get your hands off my girl!¡± Charles¡¯ voice boomed, interrupting Mano and Saria¡¯s conversation. Currently Saria and Mano were sitting next to each other. Saria was leaning her weight on Mano and, although there were no romantic feelings, to the outside looking in. It definitely looked like a rose colored situation between two people flirting. Charles was furious. Even though Saria was quite pretty boys mainly avoided her. This was because if they even tried anything Charles could make your life a living hell. This made Saria befriend Mano quickly, the first boy to interact with her normally. Charles was working desperately to make sure he was the only one to be able to court Saria. But now here she was, leaning up against another boy. The girls in the stands took a look down hatefully at the fool who was causing their prince to lose his temper. But in exchange they saw a handsome, raven haired boy sitting calmly next to Saria. Many of the girls sighed longingly. ¡°Hey who is that?¡± ¡°Isn¡¯t he a bit better than Charles?¡± ¡°Eh! No way! How can anyone... well, now that i get a closer look...¡± ¡°You girls are crazy! Charles is the only one for me!¡± The girls that were once Charles¡¯ fangirls were now facing a schism. Splitting between the girls loyal to Charles, and the once admiring this new stranger. Charles could barely hear the girls in the crowd but he got the gist of their words. Charles¡¯ face flushed red in anger. ¡°Hey kid! Come down here right now!¡± Charles stomped on the ground with his boots as the said this. He wanted to personally let this kid know exactly who¡¯s girl he was messing with. ¡°Looks like he wants to talk to me Saria. Should I go down?¡± Mano questions to Saria. A mischievous smile appears on Saria¡¯s face, ¡°Why not? Maybe he wants to be friends?¡± Saria greatly disliked Charles. He was cunning and always was hiding his true nature. Saria had denied his approaches many times and really wanted someone to put him in his place. She could just do it herself, but that stupid Charles would just mistake it for Saria paying attention to him. Now she finally met someone who could deal with him. Saria knows Mano could clearly see Charles¡¯ movements in the fight between him and the dwarf. Mano was sure to have been training hard to be able to see strikes and movements like those. At least enough to be on equal footing as Charles. ¡°Hm, okay then! I¡¯ll go see what he wants to talk about!¡± With a smile Mano trotted off toward the the first row. Standing in front of the 3m net placed in front of the first row to prevent arrows and the like from hitting the crowd, Mano looks down and addresses Charles. ¡°Hi! Nice to meet you, I¡¯m Mano Stonewall from the vanguard wing.¡± Mano bowed respectfully towards Charles, ticking him off. [[This arrogant worm!]] Charles thought before shouting, ¡°I don¡¯t care who you are! You were laying your hands on my girl! Get down here so we can settle this like men!¡± The only thing Charles could think about was crushing this boy in the stands. ¡°Huh?¡± Turning to face Saria, ¡°This guy is your boyfriend?¡± Mano was worried, he didn¡¯t want to get in between two people¡¯s love. ¡°GODS NO!- *ahem* I mean of course he isn¡¯t¡± Saria was ready to lecture Mano about his misunderstanding but decided against it. He¡¯s been training by himself in a different wing for three whole years, how could he know their relationship. ¡°Oh okay then, he must think you¡¯re a different person. I¡¯ll go down there and tell him.¡± Mano replied with a relieved expression. This guy, he¡¯s surprisingly dense? Well he is still only eight. Not every boy starts chasing skirts that early like that scum Charles. Saria laughed to herself and began to give direction to Mano on how to get to the ground level, ¡°You only need to head down those stairs to- hey! What are you doing!¡± Mano was taking a few steps back from the 3m net and took a leap, clearing the net by at least another meter landing a few steps in front of Charles on the ground below with a slight bend to his knees. Leaving two small craters where his feet hit the ground. The rest of the students including Charles couldn¡¯t help but take a step back in surprise. The arena¡¯s ground level was at least 4.5m from the stands not including the net. So Mano just made a 8.5m drop to the ground level seem like it was nothing. Hou? Able to take leaps like that so young? If I remember correctly thats Brom¡¯s boy. What kind of training is that monster Krieg putting him through to have him take leaps like that so soon? Master Aaron whistled to himself, impressed. Master rank combatants like the instructors at Myst were able to jump and drop great distances tens if not hundreds of times much farther and higher than Mano did just now, depending on the profession, but to be able to show a feat of strength like that at the mere age of eight? This kid was a monster. ¡°Hey? I think you have the wrong person friend. Saria says she¡¯s not your woman.¡± Mano states to the surprised Charles in front of him. This statement knocked Charles out of his shocked state. Anger returning to his face, ¡°What do you mean by that?! Are you trying to say that she¡¯s yours?! You dare challenge me, Charles Roland! Member of the family this city is named for?¡± Charles was fuming. Mano was confused, putting his hands up in the air. ¡°I was just letting you know of your mistake. No need to get so mad.¡± This only added to the fire burning in Charles¡¯ heart. Looking down at his feet, shoulders shaking with fury Charles let words out in cold fury, ¡°Challenge.¡± ¡°Huh?¡± Mano couldn¡¯t hear him. ¡°I, CHARLES ROLAND, CHALLENGE YOU TO A DUEL!!¡± Charles shouted into Mano¡¯s face. ¡°Huh? B-but. What?¡± Mano couldn¡¯t keep up with the events unfolding before him. ¡°The winner has rights over Saria!¡± Charles spat, cutting Mano off. Before Mano could deny the challenge Master Aaron was between them. *Clap* ¡°Fantastic! This will be a good opportunity for the class to learn how to face different opponents! Mano my boy follow me to the ring. Charles you know what side you need to go to.¡± Master Aaron was happy for the chance to get a glimpse at what Krieg was teaching the boy, little did he know that Mano hasn¡¯t actually taken any formal vanguard training. ¡°Yes Master!¡± Charles responded quickly and glared towards Mano, ¡°Prepare yourself.¡± And then made his way to one end of the ring, followed by his group on henchmen. All looking at Mano with disdain. "Are you against the duel kid?" Master Aaron asks the boy? Mano thought about it, this was a rare opportunity to face a stong opponent and earn some combat experience. "No sir, please let me go." ¡°Alright kid, Mano was it? Follow me we will get you prepared with whatever equipment you need.¡± Patting Mano on the back Master Aaron led him to the other end of the ring opposite of Charles. The ring was a white stone block, commonly found lying around the Ruby Desert sands, that was a little rough to the touch, to allow boots to grip the floor easily. Mano was lead to a small area outside of the ring with a barrel filled with all manner of weapon, from great-hammers to axes and small daggers. Swordsmanship not only trained in blades but also blunt weapons as well. Some people were partial to blunt weapons of course. Mano wore a complicated expression when confronted by all these weapons. He honestly wasn¡¯t sure what to choose. Then, he remembered something about Master Krieg not wanting him to catch the bad habits of other vanguard students. ¡°She probably wouldn¡¯t like it if I just chose a weapon without her consent either.¡± He whispered to himself. Making his decision. ¡°I will not be using a weapon sir.¡± Master Aaron raised an eyebrow at this, ¡°You should not take Charles lightly boy, he¡¯s my best student this year.¡± ¡°I am not sir, It¡¯s just I have no formal training in weapons so they would only hold me back as I am now.¡± Mano answered honestly. ¡°No training? What has Master Krieg been teaching you then?¡± Aaron answered curiously. ¡°Well, Master deemed my body wasn¡¯t ready so all I¡¯ve been doing these past three years has been physical training and primarily focusing on academics.¡± I may have signed this kid up for a beating. Master Aaron sighed to himself. ¡°Fine then, I will respect that you do not want to pick a weapon without your masters consent. Step into the ring.¡± ¡°Yes sir!¡± Mano replies enthusiastically. Mano would be lying if he said he wasn¡¯t apprehensive. More accurately he was nervous. This was the first time he ever fought anything. But for some reason, as he made his way to his place in the ring, his mind became more clear. He felt like his skin was on fire and all his senses were heightened, seeing the world much more clearly than normal. He was getting excited. ¡°Alright, since this dual is between two of differing professions, we will be using rules taken from the Swordsmanship Melee. If one cannot continue to fight, steps out of the ring, or yields he or she loses. Avoid the eyes and other sensitive areas. This is a duel, not a fight to the death.¡± Master Aaron explains the rules to the two combatants in full because it was Mano¡¯s first duel. Taking a few steps back and hopping off the ring Master Aaron was getting ready to start the duel. ¡°Get ready for pain worm¡± Charles spat at Mano. Mano could didn¡¯t even respond to him. He was just standing there, knees slightly bent and shoulders width apart and arms out as if to evade any attack. ¡°Che- You¡¯ll regret ever setting your eyes on Saria.¡± When Saria saw Mano walk into the ring without any weapon she became extremely nervous. Had she been wrong? Mano actually didn¡¯t learn any combat? Saria moved to the front row of the stands, clutching the skirt she was wearing tightly her amber colored eyes filled with worry. She felt terrible that she led Mano into this situation, and vowed to make it up to him later. The match was going to begin. ¡°3... 2... 1... ¡°Begin!¡± Master Aaron boomed. The first one to move this time was Charles, he was equipped with a rapier in his right hand and a small buckler on his left forearm. He quickly leaned forward and pushed off the ground with the balls of his feet again. He was confident no one would be able to match him in speed. Closing the gap between them in only a few seconds Charles was in front of Mano, in his guard. ¡°Die!¡± Charles shouted as the viciously stabbed towards Mano¡¯s stomach three times. Mano was able to see through this type of attack, having seen the last duel Charles had. For some reason, Charles¡¯s movements weren¡¯t nearly as fast as when he saw them from the stands. Was it because of his heightened senses? If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. During Training Master Krieg would often put massive weights on Mano¡¯s feet, preventing him from moving, and throw high speed stones at him. Commanding him to use his flexibility and reaction to dodge them. This led to many lumps and bruises over the years, but now he could dodge almost any stone Master Krieg through at him. This kind of training allowed Mano to dodge the three strikes quickly while making distance between the two. Charles was surprised, no one had been able to challenge his strikes up till now. This made Charles recognize his opponent as strong and he took a defensive stance. Sizing up his opponent. Mano was the next one to strike, with swift movement he was in front of Charles, throwing a palm out towards his chest. Charles managed to block the strike but didn¡¯t expect such a huge impact, tumbling 5m just from the power of Mano¡¯s palm. Taking advantage of this moment Mano quickly made it next to Charles and through his foot down, ready to stomp towards one of Charles¡¯ arms. Charles manages to recover in time to roll away from Mano¡¯s stomp and stood up, out of Mano¡¯s range. He shuddered when he saw the small crater left under Mano¡¯s feet. I can¡¯t underestimate this guy, if that had landed, It would have crushed my arm. Charles thought to himself as he stared at the spot in the ring with awe. ¡°You see that? That new guy is totally pushing Charles back!¡± ¡°He said he was from the vanguard. Were they always this strong?¡± ¡°Gosh he¡¯s even more perfect now!¡± ---------****MASSIVE EDITS BELOW****--------- [ 17 March, 2015 -LAVA- Hey after getting some feedback ( Specifically from users Soulkia and EcoJakk ) I realized I messed a lot of things below this "EDIT" line. Making a lot of characters personalities strange. Specifically Master Krieg. It''s safe to say the way this chapter ends now is much more natural and less forced. I like this ending a lot more and hope you do to! P.S I will not always change the way the story is just because of a few comments, this is my story after all. But, when valid points such as the ones stated by the people above are brought up, I will do all I can to fix it. ---------****MASSIVE EDITS BELOW****--------- The audience was surprised at how even this match was. The crowd gathered was quite a bit larger that when they started, you could even see the shadow of Master Krieg watching from the top of the stands. Master Krieg was seething. Her pressure causing everyone around her to be nervous. ¡°Fool! I give him one free day and he gets dragged into a fight because of some girl. I¡¯ll have to discipline him thoroughly for this.¡± Master Krieg was furious. ¡°I¡¯m impressed at his natural instincts though. It was right for him to choose vanguard. That¡¯s the kind of instincts you need living on the front lines.¡± Master Krieg admitted. Master Krieg heard about how the fight started from one of the people present and thought to herself. This kid is trouble, getting dragged into a fight between two people. Mano was excited. A the cells in his body felt like they were alive and he¡¯d never felt so sure of himself in his life. Like a shroud was lifted from his sight. Mano didn¡¯t notice but his battle sense was strong and under his hid tunic his birthmark was glowing a soft dim blue color. Mano held this state of consciousness for a couple minutes while Charles was sizing him up. Then as quickly as his excitement came, fatigue washed over him, causing his stance to falter. Seeing Mano falter, Charles dashed up even faster than the first time he struck and swiftly stabbed Mano four times in the chest. The tip was blunt so it didn¡¯t pierce his clothes or skin, but the impact knocked the wind out of Mano¡¯s lungs. Mano saw Charles charge him but couldn¡¯t move thanks to the sudden fatigue that struck him, watching as the rapier struck his chest as if in slow motion. Mano, now out of breath attempted to retreat jumping away from Charles. Charles knew a chance when he saw one. Retreating in the middle of battle had many disadvantages for the front-line, in this case Mano. It left your back open to attacks and had Mano had any combat training, he would have first thrown a feint to throw Charles off and then retreat to safety. Charles followed right next to the retreating Mano and kicked him in his ribs. A noticeable *crack* could be heard, the sound of bones fracturing. Mano gasped in as pain blossomed from his left hand ribs, rolling on the ground from the impact. He clutched his ribs and Charles began to repeatedly beat Mano while he was on the ground. Saria was crying now. It was obvious that Mano had no training and was now taking a trashing from Charles. It was all her fault that Mano was lying on the ground getting beaten as he clutched his broken ribs. Sigh, poor kid. To be defeated so thoroughly on his first bout. Master Aaron thought to himself as he was about to stop the fight. Then, he witnessed something amazing. Mano¡¯s consciousness was drifting away. The pain of being beaten bloody was making his vision go blurry. In the darkness of his mind he could feel something, an ocean, vast and powerful churning deep in his mind. He could see his naked body drifting downwards towards it¡¯s waters, battered and bruised Mano remembered how nice it was to be in the bath, or just water in general. It gave him strength. He felt like he could hear a soft voice calling out to him, calming him. He watched as his body slowly approached the waters. Not noticing the damage his body was receiving from the countless stabs and kicks Charles was delivering. When finally, after what seemed ages. One of his toes dips in the water. Mano¡¯s eyes opened suddenly and in his eyes seemingly as deep as the oceans a will to fight arose. With more strength that he has ever felt before Mano caught Charles¡¯ leg as he came in for another kick. He turned his head and glared at the enemy delivering this pain, releasing a powerful killing intent. ¡°W-what?!?¡± Charles was excited at his victory and was taking his anger out on Mano¡¯s body. That is until Mano grabbed one of his legs and glared at him, blue eyes swirling with fury. A shiver went down his spine and he remembered that he was the one on top. ¡°Still fighting eh? Commendable, I almost thought that-¡° *SNAP* ¡°Aaaaaahhhh!!!¡± Charles was now screaming in pain as he had his leg broken from Mano¡¯s sheer grip strength. Mano coughed up a small amount of blood and slowly pushed him self up, still clutching his newly broken ribs. Mano¡¯s mind was clear. This man was an enemy, and enemies needed to be stopped. Limping towards Charles, who was now cowering in fear of the monster before him. ¡°I yield! I yield!¡± Charles yelped as he tried to back away. A pool of liquid forming underneath him. The stands were deathly quiet. The scene of Charles brutally beating up his opponent had foster disgust from his now former fans. How could their prince be so brutal. He was far from the gentle mask he wore in front of the girls. Mano didn¡¯t stop moving however and was standing above Charles now. Lifting his leg, ready to stop on Charles sword arm. ¡°NO PLEA-¡° Charles screamed when Mano¡¯s leg suddenly stopped. At the moment Mano was about to unleash hell on Charles a shadow appeared behind him almost out of nowhere chopping Mano at the base of his neck, knocking him out. Catching her student Master Krieg picks Mano up princess style after he crumples to the ground. Looking down at Charles with disgust and then turning to face Master Aaron she says, ¡°I apologize on behalf of my student here, I let him out for one day and he gets into a fight.¡± Krieg sighs. ¡°However" Master Krieg unleashed a terrible killing intent directed toward Master Aaron, causing a drop of sweat to form on his brow, "I must ask, Mano here must have definitely told you he had no training. Why would you have him duel your best student?" Master Aaron replies easily, ¡°Haha! I¡¯m jealous of what a wonderful and pure student you have! My student here challenged your boy to a duel, I gave Mano the option to decline but he denied it. My deepest apologies I''ll reflect on this later.¡± Master Krieg knew that Master Aaron''s personality was that of a battle-maniac. But at the same time she knew he would have stepped in before things became life threatening. So she decided to let this one slide. Turning to face Charles Master Aaron¡¯s face darkens. ¡°You are too arrogant child. Hopefully this defeat will let you know that you have a lot to learn. This child managed to get lucky and defeat you now, but what about when he actually learns techniques? Reflect on this and humble yourself. You are leagues ahead of this child in terms of skill but your willpower is weak. I believe in you and expect you to crush him honestly in the Melee.¡± ¡°Y-yes sir!¡± Charles responded quickly, still in shock over what transpired in the duel. The shame he went through because of this duel made his heart even more dark. He would definitely focus solely on the sword until the Melee so he could crush Mano. Master Krieg glared down at Charles in disdain, "You are rotten kid. Be prepared, next time Mano faces you here, i will not stop him from destroying you." A shiver ran down Charles'' spine, and cold fury still boiling up within. Making her way off the ring Master Krieg addressed on final person, ¡°You there, girl!¡± Saria realized that Master Krieg was addressing her and hastily stands up in attention. ¡°You are the reason Mano is like this! I do not care about the squabbles between two students, but when it draws MY student in, then we have a problem. Never associate yourself with Mano again." Saying the last of what she needed to, and leaving a young girl in tears, this would be the final time Mano set foot here until the Melee. Master Krieg, carrying Mano in her arms, exits the arena. Charles was still sitting there, allowing the healers to treat his wounds. His face was different than any he''s held before. It was twisted in anger and filled with hatred for his new enemy. That fucker! Made me look like a fool! Charles was clinching his fist so tight his nails started to dig into his palm. Next time I face him I''ll make him wish he was never born! I''ll break every bone in his body beyond repair! It was clear next time Mano faced Charles, he would be fighting for his life. ---- Making her way down the trail to their cabin Master Krieg looks down at the now sleeping Mano with a mix of worry and pride, ¡°You¡¯re so rowdy, I let you free for one day and look at the chaos you started. As expected of my student. Oh and by the way, you passed your final.¡± Kreig laughed to herself, seemingly more her age. Night was falling on Myst Training Hall, tomorrow a young vanguard would begin training harder than ever before. ---- [SPOILERS] Comment, Feedback, Discuss Here! Also Edit Announcements Here! Enjoy! :D ---------- -Chapter 6- The night of Mano¡¯s duel with Charles. In a humble cabin surrounded by training equipment, nestled alongside a large pond, a boy was sleeping soundly. Recovering from his multiple wounds incurred in his duel earlier that day. In the cabin¡¯s common room a woman was pacing back and fourth with a complicated expression on her face. The half-elf woman wore beautiful features with long red hair, gently flowing down to her hips. Her emerald eyes creating a striking contrast. She had a great figure. Boasting a modest bosom accompanied by an enticing hip line. One could tell just by looking she was incredibly fit. Not a shred of unneeded fat on her body. Master Krieg was pacing around the common room of the cabin she and Mano stayed in. The room was warm, with a hearth in the far corner of the room burning brightly. The cabin was modestly furnished, containing the kitchen, dining table and lounge area. It was a stretch to call this three room cabin a training hall, it was more like a small home. Hanging above the fireplace was a long spear mounted just above a gauntlet with an abnormally large forearm section, almost like a shield. Every now and then Krieg would stop pacing and take a glance at the two pieces of equipment, think for a moment, and vigorously nod to herself before pacing again mumbling under her breath. ¡°That kid... He more than has the potential to learn my vanguard way.¡± Krieg mumbled to herself. ¡°No! It¡¯s too dangerous! Nine out of ten people die using that style. It¡¯s too difficult for most to learn. UGH! What should I do?¡± Mumbling to herself this way, she was constantly trying to justify taking Mano as her legitimate successor and disciple. While at the same time trying to convince herself it was too dangerous. Master Krieg, despite being incredibly strict towards Mano when it came to training, had grown quite attached to the kid over these past three years. His honest attitude toward training and the fact that he never complained was very endearing. He sort of resembled a cute younger brother that she never had growing up. So she cared very much about his well being and future. Mano also displayed his incredible talent for the vanguard in his duel with Charles. If it wasn¡¯t for this fact, she would have never even thought about taking him in as his disciple. ¡°Ugh, I need to think about this deeply.¡± Turning to look at the gauntlet and spear above the fireplace, Krieg quickly equipped both and headed outside. She needed to work off some of the stress from today. Wielding the long spear in her hand along with the heavy gauntlet on her arm gave her a familiar feeling, and she smiled. ¡°I was always the most calm with these on me.¡± With a twirl of her wrist she began to spin the spear wildly in her arms, creating a low hum in the air. In a swift movement with great force she brought the spear¡¯s blunt edge to the ground, vaulting up high in the air. With a flip she brought her spear high, and came down hard, slashing her spear towards the ground. The speed of the spear seemed to split the air itself, and a faint gold light could be seen surrounding Krieg¡¯s body. ¡°Fufu, this is the best.¡± She now wore a beautiful smile from ear to ear. After about what seemed to be hours, she finally stopped. A sheen of sweat on her body, the light white tunic and dark brown shorts clinging to her body. She didn¡¯t bother changing into training gear and went out with just her pajamas on. This would definitely be a lucky sight if anyone was around to see it. ¡°I¡¯ve decided.¡± With those final words she smiled and cleaned herself up, put the equipment back in its place above the hearth, and headed off to sleep. ---- ¡°Wow.¡± Mano sighed at the sight of Master Krieg in the training yard. Master Krieg was so enthralled in her training she didn¡¯t notice the loud noises she was producing, and smiled to herself when she noticed the young boy watching her intently trying to keep unnoticed. But she continued training even harder, showing off her skills. Seeing Master Krieg performing all those fantastic techniques brought stars to Mano¡¯s eyes. She was flipping, striking, and dodging an unseen enemy. ¡°I wonder if I could learn that too?¡± Mano wondered to himself as he tried to scoot closer to the window to get a better view. Wincing at the sharp pain all over his body. ¡°Sigh,I really have a lot to learn. Charles was clearly more skilled than me, if I didn''t get lucky at the end I would have really taken a thrashing.¡± Mano reflected to himself. Taking a look back at Master Krieg¡¯s performance one thing intrigued him the most, and that was the gold light surrounding her body. It was almost like the gold mist was being produced from her whole body. Mano noticed that when Master Krieg performed defensive moves the light would glow brighter and a half dome of transparent gold light would even be generated in front of her in a big area. ¡°This must be a vanguard¡¯s mana arts.¡± Mano sighed in wonder. Mana arts were well known by everyone as the techniques used by combat specialists. Unlike mages, who possessed a large mana pool and the rare talent to convert their considerable mana externally into many different forms, the combat specialists would manipulate their considerably smaller pool of mana internally. Mana arts were the skills combat specialists used that would expend some of their internal mana to create many different effects. In this case, Master Krieg created a large dome-like shield in front of her. Most people never learn mana arts because they simply didn¡¯t need to. Not everyone going was going to be in the military or an adventurer after all. At Myst Training Hall mana arts training would normally take place after your fifth year of study, when most student¡¯s would start leaving to their normal lives, staying only for the academic portion of school. This meant most students training after the age of ten meant to make a career in the military or adventuring, or simply came from noble families where it¡¯s advantageous to have a combat background. Mana watched Master Krieg until she finished her training. Seeing that she was done Mano carfully rested himself back into bed, looking at the sky outside his window. The stars always shown brightly in the desert, casting a gentle light into his room. ¡°I¡¯m definitely happy Master Krieg is my teacher.¡± With these thoughts Mano drifted off to sleep. ---- The next day. With the help of some of Myst¡¯s resident healing mages Mano was back in tip top shape in no time, and was now sitting at his desk in the room that Master Krieg designated as the class room. Eagerly awaiting instruction. ¡°Alright! Since you passed your exam we can finally start your vanguard training formally.¡± Master Krieg was standing in front of the chalkboard wearing her normal leather and cloth equipment. With her red hair up in a bun to keep it out of the way. ¡°Now first off. I want you to tell me how each combatant is separated in terms of skill.¡± This was an easy one, Mano thought. As he responded easily, ¡°Combatants are each separated into nine rankings, not including master and above. The first block of combatants are separated by stars. Ranging from one star combatants, all the way up to nine star combatants. After that there is a large threshold between nine star and the master ranks. Master rank is separated into only three tiers. Low, mid, and high masters, because at that level their skills are so specialized and different that it¡¯s difficult to rank them. After that is the twelve numbered demi-god ranks, and finally above them are the Gods that govern the world.¡± This story has been unlawfully obtained without the author''s consent. Report any appearances on Amazon. ¡°Good, now tell me. On your future adventures you will come across many mages, in fact, most parties are led by mages because they hold a higher social standing than most people. Are they ranked in the same system as we combatants?¡± Master Krieg asked. Mano knew this one by heart as well. ¡°Yes, but their ranks are considerably harder to climb than physical combatants and generally speaking a mage is more powerful than physical combatant of the same rank.¡± ¡°Good!¡± Master Krieg was proud that her teaching wasn¡¯t a waste and that Mano retained most of the information. ¡°Now, finally I want you to explain the vanguard class to me.¡± ¡°The vanguard class is a heavy armored person who specializes staying on the front line, drawing the enemies attention away from their allies. They stand firm, absorbing any strike coming their way while at the same time dishing out pain to their enemies.¡± Mano answered with a smile on his face. ¡°Good answer, but not an entirely correct answer either. A vanguard doesn¡¯t need to stand there and take any strike coming their way. This is a common misconception about vanguards that leads to not only people looking down on us as fools, but also leads many vanguards to their doom.¡± Master Krieg smiled slightly watching Mano trying to comprehend what she was saying. Master Krieg continued, ¡°Just standing and absorbing every attack is definitely a way to defend against your enemies, and some styles handle it effectively, but doing so puts unnecessary burden on your body. It¡¯s much more effective to also dodge or stop your enemies from attacking at all.¡± Suddenly it dawned on Mano why Master Krieg emphasized flexibility and explained the training where he was attacked by Krieg while his movements were limited, told to dodge as she constantly attacked him. Building his reaction speed and battle instinct. ¡°Now, today I will ask you an important question. What kind of vanguard do you want to be?¡± Master Krieg asked, already knowing Mano¡¯s answer. ¡°I want to be a learn how to be a vanguard like you!¡± Mano excitedly answered. ¡°I want to jump around with a spear and block attacks the way you do! It¡¯s so amazing! The way you used the spear along side your gauntlet!¡± Mano was excitedly making hand gestures and pretending like he himself was a mighty spearman, jumping around the room with his imaginary spear. ¡°?!¡± Mano gasped to himself and covered his mouth with his hands. He just revealed that he was spying on Master Krieg¡¯s training the night before. Master Krieg revealed wry smile to Mano. ¡°Don¡¯t worry. I already noticed you were watching me train last night. Thats a bad habit you know? Spying on a lady.¡± Master Krieg walked by Mano and poked his forehead. Master Krieg retrieved the spear and gauntlet from the hearth and equipped them while making her way to the door. She turned to Mano and admitted, ¡°I¡¯ve already decided that I will be taking you under my wing officially, as my disciple. Follow me, your introduction is today.¡± She stepped outside wearing a complicated expression thinking to herself, hoping she was making the wise choice. Once outside Krieg told Mano to wait out front, walking around behind the cabin. Once Krieg reached the shed attached to the back of the cabin she produced a few things. A large metal rod, and a pair of shackles. Bringing these tools to the front of the training hall she began to inform Mano on the purpose of these items. ¡°You are going to be heading down the most difficult path for vanguards Mano, prepare yourself. The specific variant of vanguard I¡¯m going to teach you originates from the barbaric tribes of the Northern Hell Peaks, where I was raised by my barbarian father and elf mother.¡± ¡°The people there are hardy and learn to survive from a young age, constantly warring with nature. The monsters there are massive to behold and extremely deadly. The spear is the perfect weapon to combat these beasts as a vanguard. A spear¡¯s reach along with its versatile form provides supreme offense and many defensive options. A powerful offensive isn¡¯t enough to survive in Hell though. You need to boast a powerful defense as well so your allies can strike down the enemy freely while you defend them. That¡¯s what this is for.¡± Krieg lifts her left arm, displaying the large gauntlet on her arm. ¡°The spear we use demands flexibility as well as two arms. As such we cannot equip the large tower shields most vanguards use. This gauntlet here is built to be extremely durable as well as angled so you can direct blows elsewhere, using the force of their attacks against them. If we are talking seriously from a Hellsman¡¯s point of view, which is what people that practice our style are called. The gauntlet is the heart while the spear is the soul. One cannot exist without the other, and you cannot exist without both.¡± Master Krieg¡¯s instructions were profound and it was difficult for Mano to understand. ¡°For now you will wear these at all times.¡± Master Krieg walked up to Mano and equipped him with the shackles, there were no chains on them so looked like small black bracelets on his arms and legs. They weren¡¯t extremely heavy, but Mano found it difficult to move and noticed the resistance on the shackles grew as he exerted more strength. When Mano looked closer he noticed small writing on the shackles surface. ¡°These shackles were once worn by me when I was a young hellsman. They are magical and hold the property of increasing in weight as more strength is used by the body. They are the perfect weight training tool that will keep you constantly improving past your limits.¡± Master Krieg stated with a proud expression, handing Mano the large metal rod. When Mano took the metal rod from Krieg he could feel his strength being sapped from his body. ¡°This is your spear, It will accompany you at all times. From now on your spear is your brother, if I ever find you without it.¡± Master Krieg¡¯s eye¡¯s flashed and Mano shivered, knowing what to expect if he didn¡¯t heed her warning. Moving on Krieg added, ¡°As you can tell, this spear has magical glyphs normally used on prisoners restraints. It slowly saps your stamina while you wield it.¡± ¡°You will continue your normal daily training program and will receive combat instructions from me in the evening. Don¡¯t worry about passing out from exhaustion, I will make sure you can go through more training than ever.¡± With a wicked smile on her face she went into the house, only to exit with a massive barrel. Placing it on one of the tables outside causing it to bend slightly from the weight. She brought out a small mug filling it up with that wicked green liquid he was used to drinking by now. ¡°This is a much more potent version of the tea i¡¯ve been giving you till now. I sent a letter to a healing mage friend of mine a while back, she should be getting to Roland any day now with her apprentice and they both will be staying here with us. She will take care of your muscles in the evening while you drink this to keep your stamina up in the day. I¡¯ll be accompanying you throughout your training pushing you to the limit. Now get running! I¡¯ll make sure you crush the competition in the Melee this year!¡± The wicked smile never left her face this whole time. Sweat started pouring down Mano¡¯s back. He hated that tea the most even though he knew it was great for him, and now that a healer would be here, that would mean no rest except for sleep. He¡¯d have to endure this hell for the next four years. With that monster Krieg pushing him, Mano never ran so hard in his entire life. ---- Chapter 7: Hellsmans First Day! Part 2 Hi guys! Had some time today and I felt like writing so this chapter came a little sooner than normal! :D I''m going to miss writing this kid when he finally grows. It''s refreshing to write a child''s point of view. Let me know what you think! Look forward to an awesome free period and first meeting in the next chapter! ---- - Chapter 7 - In the training yard outside Master Krieg¡¯s cabin. ¡°Haah, Haah¡± Mano was lying on the ground, breathing heavily. He was exhausted, he still wore the 160 kg clothes and by now that wouldn¡¯t be a problem during training. What was draining him was the metal pole in his hand and the shackles on his arms. They were both ¡°gifts¡± from his Master, Krieg. Both were magical items the put a considerable burden on the user. The spear, which was inlayed with weaker versions of the magical runes used primarily on prisoner restraints, had the property of draining the stamina from the user. This made Mano feel like he had maybe a fourth of his stamina from normal. The second tool of torture, was the pair of shackles he wore on his ankles and wrists. From the outside these looked like tasteful black bracelets, but if one looked closely you could see a complicated knot of magical runes. The shackles had the property of increasing in weight in comparison with the amount of strength used. The most scary part of these tools though, was the fact that they grew with the user. Which meant the person equipped with them would always be working. Both of these items together were being used in terrifying tandem to forge a monster. Master Krieg once went through this hell herself, when her father trained her as a hellsman. Now she was passing on those teachings to her first person she deemed worthy to learn her craft, Mano. ¡°Get up! We aren¡¯t nearly done yet!¡± Master Krieg was standing over Mano¡¯s body, urging him to keep going. ¡°We may have ran as much as your normally did in the past, but we are increasing your workload from now on!¡± Mano looked up at Master Krieg, weakly standing back up, muscles quivering. ¡°Master, may I have some of the tea?¡± Mano felt sick when he said those words. ¡°Hou~?¡± Krieg raised an eyebrow at this, ¡°Sure. wait here while i get you a cup.¡± She walked over to the large barrel resting on the table near them, and filled a glass with a suspicious green liquid that screamed of danger. When she returned to Mano with the cup she offered it up to him, ¡°Here you go! But you know what will happen you waste even a single drop right?¡± She wore a kind smile that brought shivers to Mano¡¯s spine. He knew by now that this tea was hard to procure and Master Krieg worked very hard to produce it. He wouldn¡¯t dare waste a drop. ¡°Yes Master.¡± He slowly brought the liquid to his lips. Almost coughing and passing out from the impact of the tea. It¡¯s flavor was terrible, it was hard to describe. He struggled to take down the last of the tea, but he quickly drank the rest when he could feel his strength returning. The pain from the work out still existed, but he could feel his stamina returning. As much as he hated the tea, he had to admit to its advantages. ¡°You waste too much strength child. The shackles only burden so harshly because you waste too much energy. Reflect on this and try to correct yourself.¡± Master Krieg says while putting away the cup. ¡°Now let get back to the run.¡± The run went by without a hitch, well except the two times Mano collapsed from muscle exhaustion, only to drink more of the green tea and continue on. ¡°Come now, we need to begin flexibility training.¡± Master Krieg led Mano to a clearing near the pond where two mats lay. Mano has been going through flexibility training for the last three years. The results of this were readily apparent. Mano could easily bring his legs to a full split while resting his body on one leg, stretching his sore muscles and helping them recover with controlled breathing. Due to his training his balance was incredible, allowing his body to remain in complicated positions for long periods of time. While he still struggled with the forms that required him to be on his hands or arms, Master Krieg never hounded him for it. It would still be a while before Mano had the same balance upside-down as he did normally. Sweat was dripping from Mano¡¯s brow. ¡°This is a lot harder than normal.¡± Mano admitted while struggling with a basic form. ¡°That¡¯s the shackles letting you know you¡¯re wasting movements. I keep telling you this is the proper way.¡± Using her hands Master Krieg adjusts Mano¡¯s body accordingly. Compared to his other training, the flexibility was the most calm. Atmosphere played an important role in stretching after all. After about an hour of flexibility stretching it was time for reaction speed and evading training. After another cup of tea Mano was about to equip the weights to his feet when Krieg stopped him. ¡°Wait, you are passed the use of those weights. From now on you will be defending against my spear. You are free to dodge in anyway possible and also use your own spear to block or evade if need be. Don¡¯t try to run, you wont out speed me.¡± ¡°Yes Master!¡± Although scared of challenging Master Krieg, Mano was extremely proud that he made enough progress to move on to actual strikes. I need to test if what I saw Mano do in his duel was real. Master Krieg thought to herself. She managed to watch as Mano easily dodged the strikes of child Charles. If she was right about her theory than she could train Mano accordingly. They were in a clearing just in front of the cabin, standing across each other about ten meters apart. Mano was tense and readying himself to dodge any strike coming his way. ¡°I¡¯m coming.¡± With that statement Master Krieg released a pressure that Mano could barely handle. With a twirl Master Krieg dug her spear into the ground, launching herself headfirst toward Mano. The pressure instantly hit Mano, causing him to brace himself for impact. This pressure was enough to bring most trainees to their knees. On the contrary though, Mano was excited. The thrill of battle he experienced with Charles started to flood into his body, blood boiling. He smiled, the world around him seemed to slow down, seeing everything clear as day. He loved the feeling of a shroud being lifted from his body. Watching Master Krieg vault toward him with her spear, he easily dodged her strike by a hair. He wasted no movements and his body seemed to flow around Master Krieg¡¯s strikes. If you looked closely you could see a faint blue glow surrounding Mano¡¯s body, almost indiscernible from the naked eye. Finally, after what felt like an hour an immense fatigue hit Mano, bringing him back to reality. Falling down to one knee using his spear to support him he felt countless impacts from Krieg¡¯s spear, shooting pain through his body. Stopping her attacks Master Krieg smiled. ¡°It seems my theory was correct.¡± Bringing a cup of tea to Mano and filling one up herself she drank with him. ¡°Master. I¡¯m so tired. I¡¯ve had this feeling before, back when I fought Charles.¡± Mano looked up to Master Krieg as he shakily brought the tea to his mouth. ¡°What is it?¡± Mano was confused. Laughing Master Krieg patted Mano on the back, making him wince, she explains. ¡°What you just experienced is something called ¡®The Flow¡¯. Your done training for today Mano. Let¡¯s go take a bath and I¡¯ll explain what ¡®The Flow¡¯ is when I give you your massage. After that you can go ahead and have a free period again.¡± Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere. Master Krieg and Mano would often bathe together, with swim ware on of course, to bond play. Krieg noticed that Mano loved baths and decided to join him from time to time, usually once or twice a week, to massage him and just talk like normal people. Mano needed these interactions, he was a child after all, and constant training can wear on the mind. Krieg found out first hand she made a mistake with him when she witnessed the duel between Mano and Charles. If Mano had more interaction with his peers he would¡¯ve been able to avoid that situation all together. Mano was extremely excited when he found out Master Krieg was going to bathe with him. He always had fun when she joined him and he would talk about many different things, causing Krieg to smile often. The massages she gave him were amazing as well, it helped in his recovery immensely. Once Master Krieg released him he escaped to the cabin quickly with renewed strength. The stamina of a child was frightening. Changing into a pair of orange shorts Mano walked outside toward the bath, stoking the fire underneath to warm the water. Once the water was warm enough he slowly slipped into the water. Sighing with relief when he was submerged. The bath was quite big, It was probably safer to call it a small pool than a bath, and Master Krieg was quite proud of it. Once Mano¡¯s body became submerged he noticed something strange. He felt like all the work from today meant nothing and felt his muscles starting to heal. He always felt like the water helped him recover but this time it was incredibly obvious that the water was giving him power. His body was like the desert he was born in, absorbing the power from the water greedily. Once he got over the feeling of the water he sat down in the bath, thinking he¡¯d have to discuss this with Master Krieg when she comes. Stepping into her room Krieg was excited. She was excited that her student had so much potential, but even more so than that. Krieg loved bathing with Mano. He¡¯s always so cute when I massage him . Krieg¡¯s face flushed when she thought about the times she massaged Mano before. Mano was quite ticklish and Krieg couldn¡¯t resist tickling him when she gave him massages. Standing in front of her wardrobe she opened up a drawer. In it were countless bathing suits, ranging from plain all the way to scandalous. She picked a red two piece out of the stack and looked at herself in the mirror. Satisfied with her appearance. She wasn¡¯t dressing up to impress Mano, he was only eight after all. But she wanted to dress cute anyway. Krieg is a girl after all. Once she put her bathing suit on she checked herself out in the mirror one last time, grabbed a towel, and headed for the bath, her ample chest slightly shaking with each step. Her hair was done up in a lose bun and her striking figure was enough to make most men drool. The red bathing suit fit her perfectly and accentuated her impressive form well. In just a few years Mano would start to hit puberty and she¡¯d have to stop wearing these kinds of suits. While she was sure Mano wouldn¡¯t care either way, the stimulation would be too much if he did. Once, outside she made her way to the bath, only to see Mano deep in thought. Once she tended to the bath a little she slipped into the bath with Mano. Seeing Mano still thinking, ¡°What¡¯s on your mind child?¡± Looking up Mano jumped in surprise. He was so deep in though he never heard Krieg slip into the pool. After collecting himself he finally voiced his concern, ¡°I noticed this before Master, but never thought anything of it. For some reason when I¡¯m in water I can feel its power rushing into me.¡± Mano quickly made his way onto a small table set up in the bath to lie on Krieg and presented his arm, which was still recovering from the water. Master Krieg has no idea what Mano was talking about so she grabbed his arm and started examining the muscles in his arm. Surprised by the speed of recovery it had already gone through. ¡°I¡¯m not positive why the water is affecting so much, but when my friend gets here I¡¯ll have her look into it. Come to think of it, she can also administer your magic test while she¡¯s here, as you missed yours while training with me.¡± Master Krieg wasn¡¯t an expert but Mano¡¯s recovery may have something to do with his mana. Moving on, Master Krieg began to massage the fatigue out of Mano¡¯s arms and legs while explaining, ¡°First I¡¯ll explain what ¡®The Flow¡¯ I mentioned before is. The Flow is a state of mind that many combat proficiencies can tap into. Its extremely difficult to learn and few ever achieve it before they pass the threshold into the master ranks. It increases your physical abilities while also increasing the strength of your senses. It has different effects based on your mana¡¯s elemental affinities but the most important thing you need to know is it puts a huge burden on your body. When I was training with you before, you maintained the state for about 3 minutes before it was too much for you.¡± Mano turned over onto his stomach to let Krieg reach his back and asked, ¡°Why does it last for such a short time?¡± ¡°Frankly speaking, your still too weak to properly use ¡®The Flow¡¯. Your use of strength is inefficient. You need much more training to use it effectively.¡± Mano sighed when he heard this, ¡°I still have a long way to go.¡± Krieg felt a pang of guilt when she heard then and set him back up, sitting him on the table, ¡°Mano, you are the most talented kid I¡¯ve ever met. You are doing great now, don¡¯t beat yourself up okay? I¡¯ll stay with you as long as you need me to be.¡± Krieg often times forgot how young Mano is and gets too harsh on him. Mano smiled widely and exclaimed, ¡°Thanks Master!¡± Pushing off the table he hugged Krieg tightly before getting out of the bath. ¡°I¡¯m off to get chanced and explore the campus further! Maybe I¡¯ll go to the group mess hall and eat with the other kids!¡± Mano scampered off into the cabin, leaving Krieg with a goofy face on. That last attack, Mano¡¯s hug, was too much for Krieg and she stood there stupidly grinning. She couldn¡¯t hold it in and started thrashing in the water ¡°I CAN¡¯T TAKE IT HE¡¯S TOO MUCH!¡± Like that the first day of training ended unexpectedly early and Mano, with shackles and spear strapped to his back, was now on his way to explore Myst Training Hall again. ---- Just outside Roland City, in a small wagon, two women sat fanning themselves in the heat. ¡°Haah. Master are we finally here? This desert is the worst, how can anyone live here?¡± One of the people tells the other, grumpily pounding their staff on the wagon¡¯s floor. ¡°Now now child, this place is actually quite prosperous. You can see Jewel from here.¡± Pointing toward the shining waters in the distance the child could only sit there and pout. ¡°That¡¯s the only thing redeeming about this place.¡± the girl admitted. ¡°By the way, who is this friend of yours we are going to meet?¡± Responding easily the woman explains, ¡°She¡¯s one of my closest friends and she¡¯s saved my life on multiple occasions. Apparently she found a child worthy of her tutelage and needs someone, like us, to heal him throughout his training. This will be a good chance for you to hone your skills as well as possibly making a new friend. I heard he¡¯s quite cute.¡± Finishing her explanation she gave a sly wink to the child. ¡°Pssh! As if!¡± The girl retorted quickly. ---- Chapter 8: Mess Halls and First Meetings! - Chapter 8 - A young man with a pole arm on his back could be seen walking down the pathway toward the mess hall. ¡°Gosh these shackles sure make moving around hard!¡± Mano was still having a hard time moving normally with the training equipment Master Krieg gave him. It''s no surprise though, even though he was wearing clothes that Krieg had given him to wear when he was on his free time, it still weighed 160kg. Mano was wearing down quickly. ¡°I can''t wait to go to the mess hall for the first time!¡± Due to Krieg''s relentless training, Mano had been missing out on what most students have been doing for years now. Not that he minded too much, he liked his master a lot and he knew she was doing what was best for him. But, Mano was still a young boy so he wanted to meet and make new friends too. ¡°Take a look at that boy over there.¡± ¡°Wow! Look at him! He''s so dreamy...¡± ¡°Isn''t that the forest prince? Do you think we should go talk to him?¡± ¡°He looked over here and smiled! As I thought, I should go talk to him!¡± ¡°As if! He wasn''t looking at you he was smiling at me of course!¡± ¡°Hey!¡± Just like the last time Mano was out he was gaining a lot of attention because of his looks. He couldn''t quite make out the bickering of the girls but when he saw some of them looking at him and smiling he returned the favor with a smile and wave, causing a misunderstanding and argument between a group of girls. His clothes looked quite fashionable as Master Krieg didn''t want Mano making her look bad by wearing shabby clothes. Definitely not because she wanted to dress him up in cute things. Although he had his spear strapped to his back it was not uncommon to see students walking around with the tools of their specialty attached to their body. For instance if Master Feralis caught even a single one of his students without their bow and quiver it was going to mean hell for them, say goodbye to your free time and hello to fetching arrows for hours. There was even a story where years ago a boy fell asleep during night training with Master Tethys and lost his daggers. He was expelled from the class immediately. Leaving the student to only academics for the rest of his time that year and causing him to repeat the grade with a new instructor. Mano wasn''t the only student having it hard. It wasn''t long before Mano made it to the mess hall. Whoa the the mess hall sure is big..., Mano was impressed by the magnitude of the Myst school''s mess hall as he walked through the large double doors. It was used to feed the entire student-base as well as staff so it was made to accommodate many people. The building was three stories separated by age groups and served dishes so impressive that some of the parents even asked their children to bring some of the desserts home with them on their free days. Mano was becoming overwhelmed by all the smells and sights of the food. Because most of the students at mist would continue to stay after they graduated academically at 12 years old the mess hall had to make many different kinds of healthy food so that the students didn''t get bored of it. Food is one of life''s great pleasures after all and a great escape from the grind of daily training. ¡°Uhm...¡± Mano was standing confusedly at the beginning of the food line not quite sure of what to do to get food. There was a clear orb at the beginning of the buffet line that students would walk up to and touch before continuing on. Mano had no idea how it worked. The girls didn''t mind too much because he was nice to look at but the jealous boys who already saw Mano as their enemy were beginning to become agitated. ¡°Need some help there? Is this perhaps your first time here?¡± Just as some of the boys were reaching their wits end with their stomachs eating them from the inside a tall young man descended like an angel to save them by helping explain how getting food works at the mess hall. ¡°So this is a simple examining orb that will tell you what nutrients you are in need of to make sure you get all the right foods in your body. All you do is you put your hand on the side here...¡± The young man was patient and explained how to use the device and even answered all the questions Mano had about a such a wondrous device. So I just put my hand here... Mano was excited as he placed his hand on the orb . It was simple device that only showed you what to eat but he was fascinated by the mystical nature of the device. He was also curious about what he was missing out on nutritionally. <> The orb glowed with gilded letters which brought envious gazes from the students currently eating vegetables for the fifth time that week. ¡°Ho~¡± The young man widened his eyes in surprise. ¡°You must be quite the diligent person. When that notification comes up it means to just eat whatever you like. I''m quite jealous. I''ve had to eat nothing but chicken the last three weeks. It''s like the orb has a grudge against me or something...¡± He looked a bit dejected when he said this. ¡°Thanks for the help! Um...¡± Mano turned to give his thanks to the young man that helped him but forgot he didn''t even know his name.Love this story? Find the genuine version on the author''s preferred platform and support their work! ¡°The name is Diano, 12 years old, subterfuge student. Nice to meet you.¡± Diano extended his large hands toward Mano. ¡°Nice to meet you! I''m Mano, eight years old! I''m training to be a vanguard!¡± Mano was excited at the thought of making a new friend and enthusiastically extended his hand to shake Diano''s. Diano was a beast-man. Evident in his large stature and quickly developing body. His posture was proper and he had a defined air about him. He had long dark brown hair with tall light brown ears popping out on top of his head. He had a long thin tail protruding from his rear as well. It was hard to tell what kind of beast-men his parents were, or if he was a half-breed. ¡°Well lets not keep the line any further.¡± Diano placed his hand on the orb before sighing and continuing toward the food line like a zombie. ¡°Look at that guys plate!¡± ¡°I wish I could eat like that sometime...I''m so sick of these vegetables...¡± ¡°How can he not be fat eating like that?¡± ¡°The other guy looks like his pet just died...¡± The subject of these conversations were the two kids sitting at one of the tables in the mess hall with their plates in front of them. One of them was scarfing down his food in glee while the other was looking down at his food with lifeless eyes. ¡°Wow this food is so good!¡± Mano was having a fantastic time gnawing on the bone of a just finished rib before looking up and noticing Diano hadn''t touched his food once. ¡°Hey if you don''t eat your food will get cold you know?¡± Diano looked up slowly with deadpan eyes and ears down low. Slowly his eyes start to moisten. ¡°I''M SO SICK OF ALL THIS CHICKEN!!!¡± As he screams he starts to stuff his face with chicken till his cheeks were swollen with tears in his eyes. ¡°I don''t care if the taste is passable! I just wish the orb would say protein and not specifically point out chicken everyday! I feel like I come here to train my jaw! If I wanted to eat this texture all day I would just eat my shoes!¡± Diano continued to eat his food with tears streaming down his face. The herbs and garlic smell coming from the chicken is so good though... Mano was ignorant of his new friends struggles and they continued to eat their food till their dishes were clean. ¡°Ahem. I''m sorry you had to see that.¡± Diano says while dabbing his mouth with a napkin, wiping away the last of his war with his mortal chicken enemy. After clearing his mouth out with some water he stands up and grabs one of the containers from the side of the mess hall with a tap on the side of it and begins to pour a green liquid into his glass. ¡°Would you like some te-¡± ¡°NO! I-I mean, I''m fine with water.¡± The moment Mano saw the green colored tea coming out of the jug he remembered a horrible liquid used to torture his taste buds and almost wasted all the food he just ate. ¡°It''s good for your digestion though? No matter. How have you not come to the mess hall before? It should be your third or fourth year here so what were you eating?¡± Diano was curious to Mano''s circumstances before coming here and why he didn''t know how to use the orb. ¡°I live with my master in the forest around the vanguard wing. Master Krieg makes really good food and says I''ll become fat if I come here too much. I only recently started to be allowed out like this. I came here first because my parents said it had great food and I could make friends here. ¡°To me this place is torture...¡± Diano looked downtrodden as he remembered his chicken enemy. ¡°You said you were 12 so does that mean you are graduating soon?¡± Mano remembered that Diano said he was 12 years old so he was curious about what he would do when he graduated, slightly disappointed that he may lose the chance at making a friend. ¡°No I''m staying here to continue my training for the time being.¡± Diano explained that his family were commoners living in the lower class district and because tuition at Myst was free and he got free meals it was best to stay in school while he can and try his best. Plus, he loved the looks on his sisters faces when he brought cakes over from the mess hall on free days. ¡°It won''t be long before I can move my family out of the outer ring and into the nicer parts of town! I plan on becoming a merchant after accumulating enough wealth adventuring and gaining a bit of capital. So don''t forget my name, Diano!¡± Diano made such a speech about such a serious topic while laughing. ¡°So cool! I''m sure you can do it!¡± There were stars in Mano''s eyes as he met his first peer role model. Like this the boys hit it off well and conversed until Mano had to go back to the training hall. They planned to meet again next time Mano had some free time so Diano could show him around. Diano wanted to be a merchant so he worked hard on networking and making many connections and friends while in school to help him in the future. Apparently Diano had graduated from his academics even sooner than Mano, at seven years old. While being trained by his subterfuge instructor the whole time. Diano sure worked hard and inspired Mano to do the same. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the porch of a cabin next to a lake in the vanguard wing sat three women drinking tea. If you brought a painter here he would immediately bring out and easel and start his next masterpiece. Sitting at the table of course was Master Krieg along with two guests. One of the guests was an elf woman that looked to be no older than Master Krieg herself, although she was strikingly beautiful with brown hair and calm green eyes her assets were definitely on the modest side. Perhaps because she wasn''t half barbarian like Krieg she fell short in those areas. Either way she was no short on suitors and wasn''t jealous of Kreig in the least. They were best friends after all. In addition to the two was a small girl that looked like a doll. She had cherry blonde hair and dark hazel eyes. Her fair skin was so perfect it would make women demand to know what lotion she used. She had a large presence even though her legs were dangling just above the floor displaying that she still had a lot more room to grow, and was on the shorter side of girls her age. Both women were wearing cute casual clothes well suited for travel. Just a simple white blouse with brown slacks. Their white robes draped over the back of their chairs signified their status as a mage of the healing order. The older woman''s robes was trimmed in gold, representing her status as a master in her art. While the young girls robes were trimmed in a blue thread, signifying a novice mage in training. ¡°It''s so nice to see you two. It''s been too long Tabatha, how is your boyfriend doing?¡± Krieg took a sip of her tea and wondered about her best friends boyfriend who she remembered from years back the last time Tabatha visited. Although she was sure she knew the answer. ¡°Oh I dumped him ages ago! I''m currently single but I''m sure ill find the one this time!¡± Tabatha was a notorious flirt and had men pining for her all over. Krieg sighed, she lost count of the amount of fights Tabatha started because she led too many men on. ¡°By the way I forgot to introduce my young apprentice here!¡± Tabatha turned towards her young pupil to introduce her to her friend, ¡°This is young Hoku Stevens. She is a noble from the Greenwood Kingdom to the east. Her family come from a long line of knights so she is quite prideful. I apologize in advance for her harsh attitude.¡± ¡°Hey! What attitude!¡± Hoku puffed her cheeks up and looked extra adorable which completely ruined her attempt at being intimidating. Both the older women laughed at this just causing her to puff up more and attempt to stomp her feet. Which just let her legs to just swinging around not touching the ground. ¡°Hmph, anyways I hope this wasn''t a mistake! I can''t believe that I have to heal some meat head for training.¡± Hoku shared her concern with the two women which slightly ticked off Master Krieg. She let it slide because it was her best friends pupil but irritation was visible on her face. Tabatha noticed and attempted to calm the situation down and chided Hoku, ¡°Hey didn''t I tell you to watch your mouth! Besides didn''t I tell you that he was cute?¡± Hoku just laughed, ¡°You said he is going to be a vanguard right? I''ve seen them many times training under my father! The men are all just dumb muscle-heads slapping shields with each other, and they are all covered in scars and unsightly muscles! Who in their right mind would say that they are cute!?¡± Hoku had the face of someone who couldn''t be wrong and her face showed her smug attitude. ¡°Oh there he is right now.¡± Master Krieg motioned toward the distance behind Tabatha and Hoku. ¡°Master I''m home!¡± A pleasing young man''s voice could be heard in the distance as Mako was running home while waving, making sure to get home on time. ¡°At least his voice is nice to hear...¡± Hoku said aloud while turning her head to see the origin of the voice. And like that...time felt like it stopped. Everything felt like it was moving slowly as blood started to rush to Hoku''s face. What she saw was nothing like the rugged men and trainees she saw in her estate. The boy had fashionable hair and a good sense of style. His eyelashes were long but couldn''t hide his deep blue eyes. His hair was sparkling and shimmering with the setting sun. His clothes couldn''t hide the work he put into his body and was pleasing... It was love at first sight... Chapter 9: Introductions and Healing I hope they are nice people and want to be friends. Did you know this text is from a different site? Read the official version to support the creator. ¡°...That''s good.¡± Hoku whispered in a hard to hear voice. ------------------- I wonder if I can beat Charles if I continue to train this way until the competition next year?
