《Artificial Yuusha》 One Hell Of A Cliche My body felt heavy, and the air was hot and crowded. When I opened my eyes, I saw something painted on the wide ceiling. I sat up and looked around me and I was met with by people I don''t recognize. They wore medieval clothing; rags and whatnot. And in front of me, the couple I would assume as the King and Queen. They looked a bit old. "Behold, Our Saviour!" The King raised his hands and the whole room cheered. "Dear Hero, we urge you to defeat the Demon Lord and turn the tides of war to save humanity from extinction." Hero? Demon Lord? I see. It''s one of those dreams. I guess it would be weird if I didn''t have one of these since I watch so much anime. Wait a minute, what''s anime? Come to think of it, I don''t remember anything else either, nothing but scraps of information. Only thing I can remember clearly is my name, Rev. Is that really my name? It sounds a bit weird and short. "There isn''t much time before their next attack, even if abrupt, I would like you to get registered at the Guild immediately and set out as soon as possible. Now Go Hero!" I haven''t said a word and I''m already getting pushed around. Oh well, I don''t know much yet so might as well get dragged along. "I shall have Knight Veronica, one of my strongest and trusted warriors I know of to come with you. I entrust her explaining the plan to you." A woman steps forward, her light crimson her swaying sideways as she emerged from the crown of Knights. Her armor a beautiful mix of Gold and Silver. She held her helmet and knelt in front of me. "Our Hero, I shall be in your care" She declared with a dignified yet submissive voice. I followed her and she led me outside of the castle and into the town. Townsfolk kept glancing at me, like I was some sort of rare animal. It made me feel uneasy.Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings. We got to the guild which was surprisingly empty except for a woman behind the counter. The space was large, tables and stools and even the floor was made out of wood. The air had a lingering smell of alcohol. This must also serve as one of the taverns. The Veronica lady spoke with the woman behind the counter, they seemed to already know each other. The woman gasped and then nodded. Veronica motioned for me to come closer. I did and I was introduced to the guild''s manager, Yana. She had short auburn hair and kept darting her eyes back and forth; skillfully avoiding eye contact. After getting acquainted I was led deeper into the guild and into a room where the scent of alcohol had disappeared and a nostalgic smell of old wood replaced it. In the room, it felt like I was going to get my fortune predicted. There was a magic ball in the middle of a round table and what looked like a bed in the back. Veronica told me to sit down and so I did. Yana who sat on the other side of the table, took my hands and put them on top of the crystal ball. She chanted what I assume to be a spell in a low almost inaudible voice making the ball glow a bit bright. I couldn''t make out a word she said. Slowly, something started to form inside the ball. Yana was strangely interested in it as was Veronica. The two of them leaned in closer to see what appeared. "Eh?" Eh. They both said in unified confusion. "Umm, Lord Hero, you''re uhh. Level... 1" Yanna said. What? "Impossible, redo the thing, Yana." Victoria said commandingly So this world has a leveling system "I cannot, at least not for another day" Yana replied. "And the Inspect skill is never wrong" "Indeed" Victoria agreed with her anyway. I''m having second thoughts about this idea. "Victoria, what level are you?" "Yesterday when I returned for the ceremony I got checked and I was level 324" Wow. That''s high, right? I mean. Yeah, it should be a high level. "And what''s the highest level ever achieved?" "I believe it was 700, a legend that was rumored to have died in the last war" Hmm. Maybe that was the level cap. "Now, Lord Hero onto the next step." Lost in my thoughts, I clumsily followed Yana to the far end of the room. She asked me to lie flat on my back. "Now please close your eyes" I felt my shirt being pulled upwards. Wait! I grabbed her hand "Aren''t we skipping a few steps there?" She suddenly apologized. "I ask for your forgiveness but usually my assistant does the men and I do the women but he is unavailable right now so. " "I get it." I lied back down, a bit embarrassed at my outburst. I pulled up my shirt in my own accord and closed my eyes. "Now, excuse me." She put her finger on the left side of my chest. After hearing her mumbles again, my chest felt hot. It was like that for a second and then suddenly it was over. I sat up and watched Yana and Victoria discuss something. Yana shook her head again while Victoria scratched hers. "Why? What''s the problem? " Yana handed me the paper and I looked at it. ______________________________________ Agility:34 Dexterity:35 Strength:999 Intelligence:1 Wisdom:0 Vitality:? ______________________________________ Oh boy... Inconvenient Rev scoffed at his stats. It didn''t make much sense. Granted, his strength is what one would assume to be maxed out yet the gap between that and his other stats was nothing short of unsettling, specially with a couple of the stats being question marks. To be expected of the Hero, foretold to save Humanity. [I''m not even sure if the intelligence and wisdom part is supposed to be an insult.] He thought to himself. While he pondered on that subject, he noticed the two women arguing. "I''m so sorry, my inspection skill might really be too low" Yana said in a panicky tone. Rev spoke up. "What''s wrong with it?" "When using the Inspection skill to determine an adventurer''s level or stats. The inspector uses an object as a medium which is usually a crystal ball to check the level and paper for the stats. The numbers are printed onto the paper through magic so your paper being unreadable only means Yana may have made a mistake in the process" Victoria''s explanation was straight to the point and Rev was still confused. If he could read it clearly enough, why would her choice of words be "unreadable" After a brief exchange, Rev was surprised at the fact that to Victoria and Yana. The record was scribbles that did not make sense. "It''s fine, let''s just get this over with" Rev said. Yana agreed and took the paper from him. On top of a desk, a small box with a small slit on top. Yana mumbled her spell again and light shone from the box upward. The paper floated into the light and stayed there briefly until something popped out of the slit and the paper glided back down to the desk. Yana picked up the object which to Rev''s delight was a familiar rectangular item. An ID card. Upon receiving the card, Rev looked at it closely, it wasn''t made of plastic but it appeared like it was made of glass. The words on the card were as if they were inside the card itself and not written or etched on. It had his name on it, plain old "Rev", his age, gender, height and weight, even his level being shown as a large number on the right side along with a small picture of his face. On the other side was his stats. Exact same numbers as the one on paper. Rev looked at Victoria "If you don''t mind me asking, Veronica. What are your stats?" "Me? Well ahem, my stats are: Agility: 121 Dexterity:120 Strength:216 Intelligence:75 Wisdom:40 Vitality:60 " [There''re some considerable gaps between our stats. From what I''ve heard, she''s one of the strongest in the Kingdom so I guess this much is to be expected if I''m supposed to be the hero] "Lord Hero, may I request that we ride off. Time is against us and I wish to depart as soon as possible" "We''re leaving? Okay then, lead the way." When they exited the building, two horses clad in armor; one black and one white awaited them. Victoria hopped on the white one which was presumably hers and Rev clumsily got on the other one. Their mounts galloped towards the town exit. Streets looking dirtier as they got closer to the edge. The gates were in view. When they were seen by the guards, they were opened at haste to prevent any waste of time. Rev marvelled at the sight of the outside world. Nature was in full control and life was blooming. He inhaled, and into his nose entered a refreshing breeze of air. Riding the horse was a strange, familiar feeling. Like it was natural, his hands moved by themselves, skillfully controlling the reins. Some birds flew over the horizon and under the blue sky. Rev couldn''t help but smile softly. The sun was on its way to setting which meant it was some time past noon. Victoria''s horse slowed down until they were side by side with Rev. Victoria shouted "Lord Hero! We shall set camp just before sundown! It is not safe to travel at night."Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions. Rev gave her a thumbs-up. After a couple of hours of riding and a slightly sore bottom, the sun was slowly setting. The blue sky was replaced with a calming shade of orange. After finding a small clearing in the grass plains, Victoria tied their horses down. While Rev only watched, Victoria took out sticks from the bag on the side of her horse and set them up in a campfire fashion. Rev raised his brow in interest when Victoria shot a fireball at the sticks to set them alight. She also pulled out two sleeping sheets and laid them out on the opposite sides of the fire. The sky grew darker. Victoria walked off, telling the "Lord Hero" that she was just going to set uo some alarm spells in case monsters try to attack. Rev, sat alone and observed the flames. The fire danced about while spitting out embers every so often. It got him thinking about himself again. [Who am I] He looked at his clothes and he was wearing clothing. Not too flashy nut looked expensive considering the world he was in. The pockets on his side and within his suit were all empty. One thing was certain, he knew that he wasn''t of this world. [A Hero? I don''t know who I am but I guess being a hero would be better anyway. I should ask Victoria about stats more when she gets back] From the darkness, untouched by the light of the fire, Victoria emerged with the dignified and disciplined look that she always had. "Lord Hero" "Victoria, let''s drop the Lord Hero bit. It''s making me feel nervous." "Then what do you wish I call you?" "Just call Me Rev." "Then Sir Rev." "You don''t have to speak like that anymore. It''s just me, no nobles or formal anything" "I cannot. It is part of my being to be dignified" "What do you mean." "Female Holy Knights must stay pure and honorable until the age of 26 where they are sacrificed to the Great Goddess" "As in killed?" "Yes" "Why?" "Faith, Sir Rev. Faith. It simply just is." [Hmph] "Well who am I to question someone else''s belief. Anything else I need to know?" "Then I would like to relay the plan to you." "Right, the plan. Go on." "We have received reports that on the day after tomorrow, a skirmish will take place in a small town near the border marking the first of the prophesied onslaught of the Demon Lord. We believe that if we cut them off there that it would potentially slow down their entire force down." [Simple minded, too hopeful and relying on a report and a prophecy. Oh boy.] Rev sighed "I''m not really hungry but did you eat anything before we got here?" Victoria''s stomach grumbled in an amazing timing. Trying to maintain her composure, Victoria replied without hitch. She cleared her throat. "We will pass a small merchant village tomorrow so I did not bring any food. I apologize" and she prostrated herself. "I get it, I get it. No need to do that" "Thank you" It was once again quiet. The night air blew against Victoria''s hair. From Rev''s eyes, it was as if her hair had blended and become one with the flames. The hypnotic image calmed his nerves. It made his fear of so much of his situation being unknown, slightly dissipate. Out of the peaceful blue, Victoria jumped up and drew her sword and turned around. "Sir Rev, en guarde" Rev stood up not sure what to do. Large thumps began to shake the ground. Hard enough to be noticed by the two. Victoria backed off, leaping over the fire and warily moving backward pushing along Rev with her. And from the darkness emerged the first enemy Rev would have. [A Giant Golem has appeared. ] A large golem stomped in, far taller than both of them. It was at least twice their size if not more. Like a walking statue, it''s movements were rigid and slow. The being grumbled his words. "Abomination. Monster." He repeated those words until he came to a halt, standing atop the fire and towering over the two. The golem wound up to attack, materializing a stone broad sword proportional to its own size. "Get back!" Victoria shouted and Rev quickly walked backward in response to observe from a safe distance. Then like a spring being pressed down on, the golem swung its sword at Victoria with force enough to put out the fire with the wind. In the darkness, a spark illuminated from the point their swords clashed. Despite the obvious difference in size, Victoria managed to block the golem''s attack without being pushed back. [One of the strongest in the Kingdom isn''t an overstatement, huh? Being above the 300 mark is pretty amazing] But without the fire, Rev couldn''t see anything and he feared Victoria was unable to see as well. "Kor''s blessing" Upon hearing that, Rev could suddenly see in the dark. Though not as well as he would see in the day but he could follow what was happening in the battle. With amazing speed Victoria ran up the golem''s large blade and jumped, slashing at its head but with the golem being made out of stone it just cracked the outer helmet. Bits and pieces of rock fell off. As Victoria maneuvered herself to fall feet first behind the golem she was struck with its elbow completely unaware when the golem pulled back its arm to retrieve its massive sword. Her helmet dented inward, while on the ground Victoria struggled to pull it off. She looked at the golem and saw it no longer had interest in her and was going for Rev. Outside of her knowledge she was damaged badly. The blow to the head was disorienting her and she had trouble standing back up. There was a ringin in her ear. Victoria looked at her health bar and saw she had ay least more than half of her health. But being hit in the head with blunt force was more than enough to make her dizzy. Desperate, she attempted to crawl and get to Rev. He must be protected. For the prophecy, for the people. For her sister. She simply cannot afford to let him get hurt. Victoria''s vision blurred and could only hear the repeating grumbles of the golem. "Monster. Abomination." A loud bang followed by a gust of wind interrupted the groans of the golem. Rev swung his fist upward and hit the golem and using the wind pressure from his punch, the golem was dismantled. Pieces flew everywhere leaving nothing but the stone legs being intact. His body recoiled from his attack. He dislocated his arm from below his elbow that grotesquely hung from the rest of his arm. It wobbled once before fixing itself but still some stinging pain lingered. [Well that''s inconvenient] Not Who I Am The cold wind blew once again and with it returned the quiet. Rev walked to Victoria and propped her up. "As expected of the fated hero, I hope you forgive me for my blunder" Rev smiled as he helped Victoria walk back to their camp. "Still it is strange to encounter a monster of that strength. Out in the plains only goblins and rarely orcs would attack. With one hit it damaged me considerably." [So there are some spawn chances too?] Victoria''s armor clunked when she plopped down on a soft tuft of grass. She cast a fireball spell once more and looked at the flames softly. Pondering the limits the damage she was dealt would give. Rev noticed she was slightly depressed and from her words it should mean being damaged was the reason. "Why don''t you just drink a potion or two?" Rev suggested innocently. "You know of potions?" "They restore health, right?" "Yes, but the last potion seen was no less than a hundred years ago." [Woah. When you think rpg usually potions are everywhere. Not this time I guess.] "They''re really that rare?" "The way it was made was forgotten since the last war. Ever since then potions were nonexistent" [Odd.] "Oh, but please don''t worry about me. I can buff my regeneration. I should be fully healed by sunrise then we should depart and procure food" "If you say so then it should be fine. I believe you so get some sleep. I''ll stay up watch this time." "No need for that Sir Rev since you defeated that monster, other monsters would stand clear if they are lower in levels" "Good night." ... ... Rev and Victoria woke up with the sun shining gently on their faces. Rev felt refreshed, something he thinks he doesn''t feel every time he wakes up. Victoria started packing immediately and Rev folded his sheet and handed it over. The horses ready to depart, Victoria jumped on, holding her badly dented helmet and strapping it to the side of the horse. Just before Rev could hop on his horse, something glittered at the corner of his eye. He turned his head and his eyes widened. A strange feeling of satisfaction warmed him inside. The golem''s remains were huge and scattered across the field. Just above the golem''s torso, it glittered once more so Rev went to investigate. "Sir Rev?" He walked over and picked the object up. It was a glass-like orb, the size of the palm of his hand. Different colors streaked around the outer part of the object and in the middle, a faint grey shade was seen. Victoria rode over to him, Rev''s horse in tow. He held the orb up to show it to Victoria and asked her, "What''s this?" "That is a culmination orb, Sir Rev. Once we finish our mission you can turn that over to a temple. They convert it to experience crystals." [Why does this thing look a bit appetizing? I wouldn''t even be able to put it in my mouth] Rev slid the orb into Victoria''s pouch and the two rode again. After a short while of travelling, Victoria took notice of dark smoke rising from far down the road. She knew what it probably was. It was common around areas far from the capital or large cities. Bandits.Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings. Victoria informed Rev and picked up their pace. Hoping to arrive there as soon as possible. When they finally arrived, houses were and fire and dead men were sprawled about. The smell of blood and smoke filled the air. They unmounted and went deeper into the village where sounds of metal clanging caught their attention. The two rushed to see people battling, bandits slaughtering the men and women and children running for their lives. One woman burst out of a house beside them, her clothing torn and a bandit followed. Victoria drew her sword but Rev was already one step ahead. He dashed forward and got in between the woman and the bandit, as he did. Victoria could swear there was a tinge of red on Rev''s otherwise black pupils. "You disgust me" That was the first time, Rev thinks. That he ever punched another person so hard, his own arm disappeared. An event that would alarm Victoria if not for his regeneration making everything seem like it was just a trick of the light. The loud bang interrupted the sounds of battle and stole the other bandits'' attention. They looked and saw their boss'' legs still standing and nothing on top. Filled with fear, they ran. Victoria sheathed her sword and knelt down to tend to the woman on the ground. But Rev didn''t plan on letting even one of those monkeys escape. Though he broke his legs a few times to catch up, it was nothing. Rev brutally murdered each and every one of the bandits, leaving blood ajd body parts scatter and fall down like rain straight from a nightmare. When the women ans children were tended to, all that was left gathered in the warm tavern. Most crying, some left traumatized and some were simply quiet. A woman walked up to their saviors. "I am Diana, the chieftain. You both have my deepest gratitudes for saving my people." Victoria stood up. "Think nothing of it, [It''s hot. Everything''s bothering me] "Do you have any food?" he blurted out of the blue "Ah, yes. As a matter of fact we''re almost finished preparing supper" Diana smiled when she replied. Moments later, women and children walked in carrying platter after platter of food. Meat, fruits and barrels of ale. The smell that filled the room temporarily made them forget about the previous attack. The second the large platters were set down, not a minute was wasted and Rev started eating. He ate like it was the first meal he had in ages. Everyone else followed and began to eat as well. Even after consuming two large platters, he still felt hungry. It wasn''t enough. He stepped out of the tavern and nobody noticed but Victoria. She instinctively followed out of concern and a sense of duty. The cold night breeze met Victoria''s face then she saw Rev walking toward her horse. He pulled the orb out of the bag and stared at it. Remembering his ravenous eating moments before, Victoria knew what he was planning to do. She ran and shouted at Rev. "Stop!" But Rev''s hunger got the better of him. Victoria knows what happens to people who foolishly try to eat culmination orbs. They die. He heard her voice and stopped. Victoria rushed to his side and took the orb from his hand. "Not this!" she exclaimed angrily. What would happen if the fated hero would die from eating something he shouldn''t have. Rev faced Victoria. She slapped him in the face hard. It snapped him out of his confusion and he wondered what he even was doing. Both of them returned to the tavern without a word. Sometimes, Rev feels that he''s not a part of what''s happening. Like a mere observer not meant to tamper with fate. Maybe it was because this world felt too much like a game. Nothing was real. Maybe a dream he would soon wake up from. So a little experiment took place. On the second floor of the tavern was an inn, something merchant towns will always have for travelling salesmen. In his room, only a single candle was lit beside his bed. An old smell of wood. The room was basically empty except for a drawer and a window that showed the road and the night sky. Rev laid himself down and thought to himself. [This feels weird. Something is definitely off and I don''t know what.] Someone knocked on the door twice and entered, Victoria walked in with a sorrowful look on her face. This was a new sight. Victoria without her armor and without her sword. Just another female of the human species. Completely defenseless yet with the audacity to say that she won''t harm another human being. Lies. She dropped and knelt to the floor, her head on the ground and on the verge of crying. Her voice shook "Sir Rev, I apologize for earlier. I didn''t mean to hit you. It was against my vow and a great disrespect to you. Punish me as you please." [Oho] She sat up again to show her face. "It was just, people die when they try to eat the culmination orbs. It was common knowledge and I had forgotten to tell you. My body moved on its own" Rev knew Victoria wouldn''t settle down umless some kind of punishment was laid down. And Rev was feeling a bit mischievous. Rev picked her up in his arms. "Eh? Sir Rev?" "Just call me Rev." He dropped her down gently on the bed and got on top of her. "Si-... Rev?!" "Punishment" "S-something else, please. My vows." "Oh right, you need to preserve your virginity or something" "yes" "Then kisses should be fine, right?" "........" Victoria was beautiful in the moon''s glow. Her red hair sprawled about the pillow, her eyes straining to close themselves off and her arms desperately trying to cover her embarrassed face. It was all too appetizing. "If only..if only for a little bit. I shall accept it as my punishment" Rev inched her face closer, agonisingly slowly for her to watch. Too Gullible. An honest person that would most likely never lie in their entire life. One that would love one person wholeheartedly. So kind that preachers and priests would pale in comparison yet possesses the strength to defend the weak. A person that [Makes me want to eat her up] Rev stopped. Millimeters from contact with her lips, she smelled sickeningly sweet. Enthralling him even further to just consume her completely. Her neck in full display. [No, this is. What was that dream?] The harder he tried to remember what happened in his dream, the further and further the memories went until he no longer could imagine how it went like. Suddenly, he felt a piercing pain in his abdomen. Rev gripped his stomach so hard that his clothes were left with holes on them. [I feel like I didn''t eat for days] Rev groaned and dropped to the wooden floor, weakened and still clenching his stomach. [I need those orbs. Wait, where''s Victoria. She had the orbs. Fuck. Damnit!. I sent her back to her room. Can I even fit that giant thing in my mouth? I don''t think I can but I want to shove it down my throat so bad. Everything has culmination orbs, right?. Then...Victoria should gladly give me hers. Yeah.] Knees shaking, Rev struggled to stand up. His vision changed and made his attempt to walk out of the room even harder. The colors were different and random words and objects kept popping up, obstructing what he saw.Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on the original website. Then something that smelled delicious passed by his door. The scent pulled him in and gave him the willpower to push onward. It put strength in his legs and balance to his eyes. He stood up and ran to the door and kicked it open. A woman stood there carrying a basin with 12 golden orbs. She was frightened by Rev and took a step back. She stared right into his eyes that made her freeze in place. Like bottomless pits, the woman felt like she was suffocating. In fear, she dropped the basin and the orbs rolled on the floor toward Rev who dropped to chase it down. He picked up an orb, much smaller than the one the golem had. Just the size of the palm of his hand. He swallowed each and every one of the orbs. With every piece that he ate, the pain he felt slowly lessened until it was all gone. "Sir Rev!" Her voice pierced through his foggy consciousness and awaked him from his frenzy. "It''s alright. I feel like, I have to eat these things for some reason. Maybe it''s because I''m a hero? I feel less lethargic even" "Are you sure?" "Yep. They tasted damn good too" "Very well then, if you promise not to die. I shall gladly offer you more orbs" "Oh yeah, Where did those orbs come from anyway? They were smaller unlike the one we had." "From what I recall they were from those bandits. We still need to hand them over to the capital even if they are from humans." [Orbs are orbs] From this point on, Rev knew deep inside him that he would need to eat culmination orbs or risk going out of control. But for how long would he be able to keep it up? It was from a human but still. Orbs are orbs. "Do you have a plan for tomorrow?" [With my power I wouldn''t need a plan. Cheat skills are boring] Obliteration "Buhahahaha! So this is the Hero, the one to save all ya humans eh? Expected him to be a lil bit bigger than this! buhahahaha! I''m Borz, one of his Lordship''s Generals" A thunderous voice echoed throughout the town. Rev stood before a General of the Demon''s Army. A large being with grotesque but human-like features and with arms a bit too large for his body. A face proud and boasting immense confidence in his strength. Not a fiber of his being tainted with the feeling of fear towards this so-called Hero "How about it, Hero? How wouldja want this to play out? I can see yer woman there is a bit strong. She can take what? About a hundred of my men? The townspeople don''t look as eager to fight it out with my thousand-strong troops" ... Rev threw his fist towards Borz''s center. The highest point he can reach. His arm was destroyed as he expected but not a scratch could be seen on Borz. "Does that mean one on one? I don''t mind." Borz pulled his fist back, Rev frozen solid just from watching the Gargantuan demon. [I''m gonna die] A morbid sound of crunching and squelching reverberated throughout the area. "Sir Rev!" "Hup up up. Don''t move another inch there missy. If you make one more step I''ll consider this a full-on war instead of an honorable duel. In that regard, Calis!. Another woman with dark brown skin that stood in front of the army lowered her head. "Affirmative, General Borz" Glass balls clinked one by one as they dropped to the ground. "Hmm? What''s this? Oh. Calis, let''s finish up here" Borz walked forward but Rev grabbed his feet trying to pull him back. "I''m...n-not done yet." Rev''s voice shook in pain. His whole body was in agony. The blow to his mid section echoed to the rest of his body. He can regenerate but dealing with the pain is another matter. "What''s this? DON''T TOUCH ME YOU FILTHY REJECT!!" "GCK-A!" Borz punched Rev again and his body sunk into the ground. But his grip did not loosen. So Borz crushed Rev''s arm with another hit. "Hmph. Trash." Borz was in front of Victoria whose sword is already drawn and ready for battle. "Y''know, nobody needs to die for this town. If y''all scurry on along I won''t give chase. We just need the town." "And yet you ordered the rest of your soldiers to attack?" "Do ya see them making any moves? My mind is connected to Calis'' you see. If I tell her something in my mind then she''ll hear it. What I said back there was just a ruse to try''n pull out some fighting spirit from yer hero over there." "I...." "Guess he doesn''t care as much, eh."
