《THE HEART OF A CHILD》 Ch.1 War. On the eve of an early morning sunrise, a mist of premature spring rain fell upon a simple farming village. The northern winds of Eolmer still howled there eternal breath of winter upon the thatched rooftops. An eerie silent tranquility held upon the hearts of those who took a moment to listen, almost as if the world was waiting for the fall of mankind.A gentle frost covered the rough ground, patches of green could be spotted throughout the barren landscape. In every sense of the word, this would be considered a normal bitter late winter day. But between the intervals of eternal silence and a single breath, you can hear the screaming agony of mortal men dieing upon a forsaken battlefield. The field of battle was covered with the disfigured bodies of men who gave there lives for whatever useless fairy-tale they were told to believed in. There innocence was thrown away by ignorant rulers who cared nothing except for there own gain. The men and children who pledge there lives for there rulers were cast away into the dust and eaten by the carnivorous scavengers of the sky. Some who could still stand and fight would scream out a prayer. ¡°Oh Feltham of the light, where are thy love, I cry out to you with thine heart, but you have not come to raise me from this wretched upheaval.¡± Others would just hold in there final breath screaming out or speak in soft murmurs for the simple pleasures that would give them a glimpse of hope, such as water or to wash the blood off there eye''s. Some say men who show no fear in death and show honor will be swept away into the heavens to dine with there for fathers and worship there gods. They say these men will bring respect, dignity, with life everlasting for there families namesake. Others who worship false idols and bow down to whatever methodologically conjured mythology will get to live a life of vexation and death. Those who yearn for all of these false realities of gods and idols will truly suffer a wretchedly distasteful end. The clashing of swords and whistle of arrows colliding together into a mass confusion and blood lust could bring out the darkest of demons from any man''s soul. Those who seek out glory and kinship would not make it this day only the monsters would survive this day. In the background of the vast genocide of soldiers, the small farming village was in turmoil. Homes covered in flames, the wretched schrills of children who lay on the bodies of there loved ones could be heard throughout the streets. The elders of the village shackled and taken off to who knows where. Women tried to hide there children in whatever nook and cranny they could find. Some would run off into the woods and pray to there gods for protection. Most would either be captured or die from some foul beast or soldier. The men and boys who used to live and protect the village were sent off to die a vile death on the forsaken blood stained fields. Those few who survive this day will forever remember it and mourn. You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version. There feet padded the hard ground, running across the main street. ¡°Gill I may have stolen a kiss from the the beautiful duchess.¡± John excitedly exclaimed. ¡°What? She didn''t seem to mad.¡± As the boys were running they heard the sound of soldiers knocking there arrows. Gill asked in baited breath ¡°Oh John how are you going to get us out of this mess? They are about to shoot.¡± As they ran down a back alley they ducked into a small hovel. A soldier shouted ¡°All Right boys we know you''re in there, come on out with your hands up and no one will get hurt.¡± As the soldier was talking the building went up in flames. ¡°Haha I can''t believe that worked.¡± John said while crawling down the tunnel that led down to the city sewers. ¡°You simpleton! What in Gorgeds name were you thinking!¡± Gill furiously yelled at John. Gill had planned the whole operation. They were supposed to secretly break into the Governor''s mansion steal whatever they could find and escape into the night without anyone knowing the wiser. ¡°Come on man we got the money relax.¡± John said meekly. As the two boys ran down the tunnel they met up with an old hermit. ¡°So boys how did it go?¡± The old man furrowed his brow observing the faces of the boys in front him. ¡°Not good huh, well I guess we should get running then.¡± In remote castle after the Battle of the 7 kings... ¡°The village has burn down to the ground your Majesty''s.¡± A soldier reported the council of kings. ¡°Excellent now the prophecy will not come to pass!¡± A man shrouded in ornate clothing exclaimed. Present day¡ The night held a bitter cold wind, the smell of burning thatch filled the air. The sky was shrouded in a thick melodious darkness, the only light that could be seen for miles was found in the city of Lux. A place that was known for it''s exquisite beauty and beautiful summer blossoms was shrouded in sea of flames. Merchants, citizens, soldiers and even the nobles all aided in the effort to quench the blazing inferno. It all started earlier in the day when a couple of thieves broke into the Governor''s mansion and escaped by starting a fire. ¡°Get some water on those flames soldier!¡± The commander of the guards shouted. ¡°We can''t sir the city''s well has collapsed.¡± A soldier shouted back. ¡°For god''s sake then evacuate the town!¡± The commander shouted In a small crevice on the side of a steep cliff, a small lite could be spotted. Two boys and an old man could be seen sitting around a small fire. ¡°So how are you boys gonna split your winnings?¡± The old hermit asked. ¡°Well I say since this idiot got himself caught, he should forfeit all of his loot.¡± Gill exclaimed in an exasperated tone. ¡°Come on man I did get the giant diamond necklace off In a back alley... ¡°Damn I can¡¯t believe she got away, the boss ain''t gonna be to happy about this.¡± A short pudgy man said to his companion. Next to a crowded tavern a short girl with silver hair, covered in mud and grime ran through the streets. ¡°I have to get out of here.¡± She said to herself. Throughout the town people were celebrating the newly elected Governor. The young girl stopped for a moment and took a quick breather. She noticed a rain bucket next to her and she took a deep draft. While she was leaning over the side, a hand covered her mouth. As she tried to struggle a voice whispered into her ear. ¡°My apologies princess but you are going to have to be quiet for a moment.¡± As the man and princess hid in the shadows of a nearby building, men in full plated armor galloped by on their massive warhorses. ¡°You idiots I can''t believe you let her escape!¡± A large, tall man with a full black beard shouted at the soldiers. ¡°We are sorry sir.¡± The group of soldiers shouted back. ¡°Be quite¡± The man in the shadows whispered while the soldiers rode through the city gates. ¡°Won''t you please explain who you are?¡± The princess asked while the man dragged her into a small shack. ¡°I will explain everything when we get out of the city, for now we will stay here for the night now sleep.¡± The man draped in the black cloak whispered. Ch.3 Run. From dawn and till dusk they road, only stopping periodically to rest there horses and get a bit too drink and some food. Gill and John had brought with them only a few provisions other than the gold they stole from Starlight City. They were being chased down by the whole country for burning down all of Starlight. ¡°OK Gill what''s the plan?¡± Yelled out John from behind. ¡°I say we lead the soldiers into the nearby ravine, periodically shoot at them to slim down there forces.¡± Yelled back Gill while nudging his horse to go faster. ¡°Are you suicidal! Under what condition do you think we could do that? There are over a 100 soldiers on our tail, and you think we could just shoot them all down and call it a day?¡± John said exasperated while coughing up dust. Gill thought to himself, why on earth has he put up with this idiot for all these years? ¡°I also have a few tricks up my sleeves.¡± Laughed out Gill. In the early morning a small ditch on the side of the road Gill and John were rigging together a few traps and snares to slow down the knights. ¡°Ok John I will have you tie down this rope to the tree across the road.¡± Gill said excitedly. ¡°I still don¡¯t understand, who is stupid enough to fall for this?¡± John said doggedly. Gill tried to explain to his friend the delicacies of setting a perfect trap. From Gill¡¯s understanding and his experience there are three important points to setting a trap. Never expect it will succeed, have another plan if the first one fails and if your plans burns down always have a way to escape. Under the conditions these boys are under they don''t have a lot of time, the Governor''s army is about a full day''s ride behind them. The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. As Gill was finishing up setting up the rest of his contraptions John was passively getting his bow and arrows ready. John gently dipped his arrows into the small jar of oil that he brought with him. Gill noticed John¡¯s movements and decided to himself that he would sharpen his sword and check on the horses. The two boys that afternoon climbed to the top of the ravine. They left there horses in a small cave just below there hiding spot incase they need to make a hasty escape. Gill and John sat together in the dark chewing on dried meat and stale tasteless bread. In the darkness upon the cool cliff tops John noticed a small flicker of light. John quietly crept towards the cliff edge and watched the forest line flicker back and forth in torch light. Gill watched John¡¯s movements silently, he reminded to himself the more movement they both make the faster they will spotted. The commander of the Governor''s forces peered over the horizon line with a grimace. ¡°We should have at least spotted there tracks by now.¡± He blurted to himself. Commander Ron Shawl was known as the kingdom''s finest. Nations fear his ferocity in battle and those who know him personally love his bravery and kindness. They have been tracking the thieves for the past three weeks now. Each and every turn they make and every nook and cranny they step there have been traps. We have had to resort to sending in scouts at every turn. Sometimes they don''t return, unless you consider returning having an arrow protruding from your chest or falling into a ditch filled with spikes. At this point Commander Shawl has lost over 20 men from these excessive attacks. From the reports his men have given him there are only supposed to be a couple of thieves. On the third night of there pursuit the attacks had started, flaming arrows rained down there encampment. Men fell down from tripwire into pits filled with spikes tipped in poison in the darkness. We had lost half of our supplies that night and over eleven men died in that god forsaken forest. Everyone suffered from some sort of injury or burn, but that wasn''t the worst part of the whole excursion the mental trauma that was inflicted upon my soldiers was Mine numbingly painful. The soldiers jumped from even from the most obscure of noises. Even when a forest creature runs past there legs they piss themselves. We are also low on supplies we had thought this trip Would take a day or two at most. We have had to resort to hunting wild game found upon forest floor. If we do not find these arsonist soon we will have to turn around If the gods forbid I would have to report back empty handed.
