《The Tower Defender》


 First Wave Start

    Hiking through the forests and valleys, P.K. Pally continued his wandering from town to town. His mother sure picked out an interesting name. She told him ''Pally'' was short for ''paladin'', but she wouldn''t say what the P.K stood for. Anyways, P.K. Pally was a professional wanderer. There were times where he wouldn''t see anyone for weeks, traveling alone. He liked to consider himself an adventurer, although he was not signed up with any guild. He made sure the areas he traveled through were basically empty of monsters, and even if he would encounter one, he was confident that he could remain hidden, He was not a fighter, not at all. Although he did enjoy hunting occasionally. The only ''weapon'' he had was a small dagger, that he only used for his camping needs.


    Today he was traveling through some plains, next to a mountain with a forest at its base. There seemed to be some ruins to the side, so he changed his course to have a look. As he got closer, he noticed that it used to be a small village. None of the buildings had any roofs, and most of the walls of the buildings were only standing at half of their original height.


    It looks like there are only the ruins of the buildings left. I don''t see any items around. Not even any tables chairs, or cabinets.


    The village was built around its main road. A long road with a few rows of buildings on each side. The road extended past where the buildings ended for a short stretch. One thing that stuck out was that on the end of the road among the buildings was a large archway. P.K. Pally wasn''t sure what it was for, since it was at the edge of the village, and there was even a building behind it. But he was amazed that it was still standing. All of the buildings broken, without roofs, and this archway, standing two stories tall. He placed his hand on the stones of the archway, as if to test how strong it was. The stones of the archway suddenly began to shine. P.K. Pally pulled his hand away, and stepped back. As he did so, the archway became filled with a glowing blue liquid. The liquid stayed within the borders of the archway, and did not spill onto the floor. The liquid was so thick that he could no longer see through the archway.


    What kind of magic is this?


    He started to back away, keeping his eyes on the archway. Slowly backing away, to the protection of one of the ruined buildings. When he reached one of the buildings, he backed up inside the open doorway, hiding himself inside, with only his head sticking out, to look at the archway.


    He closed his eyes, trying to concentrate on his hearing, to listen for any moving thing that might be nearby, but he could hear nothing out of the ordinary.


    Not surprisingly, P.K. Pally was confronted with another ''magic'' that he had never seen before, and a blue screen popped up in his vision.

    Startled, he tried to grab it, but his hands just passed right through it, and soon it was replaced with a timer, counting down.

    He was getting anxious. Should I run?. He started to frantically look around.  What should I do?

    He closed his eyes expecting an explosion, but after waiting for a few moments, nothing happened.


    After a little while longer, seeing as nothing changed, he stepped out of the building he was in and looked around. Everything was the same, and the archway was still filled with that glowing blue liquid.


    After staring at the archway for a few seconds, he turned around. Slowly turning looking at the ruined buildings again, when he finally saw, down the road, a goblin was slowly marching towards him.


    At first he froze. Then when his senses came back to him, he ran to the sides, to hide among the ruins. Ducking around a corner, he sat down behind one of the buildings, shaking a little. Goblins were supposed to not be much of a threat, especially a single one. Apparently they have the physical strength and agility of a child. But P.K. Pally had never fought one, and he was a little scared. He pulled out his dagger, and held it tight. He focused on his hearing, and it did not seem like the goblin was coming after him. Slowly he came out of his hiding spot, and walked around some buildings to come out behind where the goblin should be. Sticking his head out, he could see that the goblin had kept on walking at a slow pace. Did he not see me?. Slowly the unarmed goblin made its way towards the archway, and walked through. Where is he going?. P.K. Pally walked back through the ruins, and made his way around to behind the archway, but the goblin was nowhere around. He closed his eyes, and still could not  hear the goblin.


    P.K. Pally gathered his courage, held the dagger tight, and stepped into the building behind the archway. There was no goblin, but this room did have a table in the middle. On the table there was a bow. There were many shelves behind the table on the wall. On one was a quiver, and on another, arrows. There was even a copper sword on a stand by the side wall.

    Another blue screen popped up in front of him.


    What did I fail?


    Unsure of what was going on, he stepped up to the table to inspect the bow. It would be a good idea to just take these items, and get out of here. He picked up the bow and was confronted by another blue screen.

    I have the option of buying the bow? 25gp is a fortune! I could get a master class silver bow for that much gold! I''m not buying this bow for that much, how would I buy it anyways?. P.K. Pally decided to just take the bow and go, things around here were to strange for him to handle. He walked through the doorway, and as he passed through, the bow disappeared out of his hands. He looked around in wonder, and saw that it was back on the table where he first found it. Forget this, I''m out of here. He started to walk quickly away from the village, almost running. When he was a short distance away, he collided with something was stopped short. He felt as if he ran right into a brick wall.

    There was no wall in front of him. Just an open plain. He stood up and extended his hands. It felt like there was a glass wall in front of him. He banged against it, and there was no effect. Not even a noise.


    He looked back at the ruined village. Maybe there''s something in that haunted village that can help get me out of here.


    He started to slowly make his way back to the village.

 Chapter 2

    P.K. Pally made it back to the outer buildings of the village.

    So I have to stop this horde thing from happening. He looked through some of the buildings to see if there were any other clues as to what he needed to do to get out. One building had small empty shelves lining the walls. At another building he was confronted at the entrance with another blue screen.

    <em style="margin-bottom: 0in; font-style: normal">I don''t feel anything out of the ordinary... P.K. Pally heard footsteps, and crouched down to not be seen. He slowly walked towards the main road, and then he saw another figure walking down the road. Another goblin! P.K. Pally took out his dagger again. It''s only one goblin, and it''s unarmed. I''m twice it''s height. I should easily be able to kill it. As it was his first time confronting such combat, as sure as he was of his victory, P.K. Pally was unable to attack. He followed the goblin close behind. Whatever happened to that first goblin? He went through the buildings and waited among some ruins at the side of the arch, waiting to see where the goblin would go. As the goblin walked through the arch, P.K. Pally followed while staying among the ruins, but by the time he looked around the back of the arch, the goblin was gone. Where did it go? He checked around the area, and could not find the goblin. Again he looked into the building in the back of the archway, and it was just as he saw it before. He stepped into the room, and picked up the bow again.

    <em style="margin-bottom: 0in; font-style: normal">It seems like there are goblins in the area. That may have been the same goblin I saw before. It is probably patrolling the area. He pulled back the string of the bow, as if aiming into the distance. I could kill that goblin as I am now, but if I had this bow I would be more comfortable. He had practiced the bow a couple of years ago, when he was considering being a hunter. But this is really expensive. I only have 35gp on me. After considering for a while, he decided to buy it. ¡°Yes I would like to buy the bow¡± Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author''s consent. Report any sightings.


    He reached into his pocket to take out the money, but he was interrupted.

    He thought he imagined some gold coins flying up into the air and disappearing. He took his coin bag out of his pocket, and noticed it was lighter than it should be, and sure enough, there were only 10gp of the original 35gp remaining. Walking over to the shelves on the back wall, he picked up the quiver.

    He was only holding four arrows, so he collected another six and placed them on the table.

    He took the bow in his left hand, and five arrows in his right, and went outside to look for the goblin.

    Feeling more confident with the bow in his hands, he walked down the main road away from the archway, looking right and left, searching for the goblin.

    After a few steps, he saw the goblin walking towards him on the main road. He must be making a loop down the main road and around the outside of the village. P.K. Pally stepped to the side among the ruined buildings, placed four arrows on the ground, and aimed with the fifth arrow at the goblin. He pulled the bowstring back, and his hands were quite shaky. The goblin was still a distance away, so he aimed accordingly, pointing the arrow into the air above the goblin, so that when he shoots, the arrow will go up, and arch downwards, hopefully into the goblin. He held his breath in an attempt to keep his hands steady, and shot the arrow. The arrow flew through the air, arched towards the goblin, and hit the ground a few feet away from the goblin. P.K. Pally quickly picked another arrow up from the ground, and aimed it at the goblin. I need to aim a little higher, or pull the string tighter. But he did not shoot the second arrow. He was surprised that the goblin did not pay any attention to the arrow that almost hit it. The goblin did not change its pace, or even look around to see where the arrow came from. P.K. Pally took the rest of the arrows, and went through the buildings to come out behind the goblin. He stepped into the main road where the first arrow hit the ground. Crouching down, he stepped closer to the goblin. When he was at a close enough distance that he was not worried that he would miss, he stood up straight, and aimed at the back of the goblin. He pulled the bowstring tight, and fired. The arrow hit the goblin on the upper right side of its back, penetrating deep into its green skin.

    The goblin did not flinch, and kept on walking towards the archway.

 Chapter 3 First Wave Clear

    The goblin kept on walking at its slow pace, with blood trickling down from the arrow that was stuck into its back. Why isn''t it reacting? It must be under some kind of spell. P.K. Pally drew another arrow, and aimed just as he had before. Aiming for the goblins torso was the best chances of landing a shot. And he fired another arrow. This arrow missed, hitting the ground behind the goblin, and skidding across the ground until it was in front of the goblin. P.K. Pally picked up his arrows, along with the first that he shot, and crept towards the goblin. When he was close enough that he was sure he would not miss, P.K. Pally drew another arrow, and aimed at the goblin. He shot, and hit the goblin in the back of its right shoulder.

    The goblin still did not stop. A trail of blood was on the ground behind the goblin. He walked along behind the goblin, readying another arrow. By the time he was ready to shoot, the goblin had already reached the archway. I won''t be able to get a clear shot once he walks through the archway. The goblin walked through the archway, and P.K. Pally walked around it with his bow drawn, ready to shoot the goblin again, but when he looked around the back of the archway, the goblin was gone. He looked at the ground, and there was no trail of blood either.

    The goblin disappeared. This must be some kind of portal. He stepped away from the archway, afraid that if he got too close he may be sucked in. Walking back onto the main road, he picked up the arrow on the ground. Now I only have eight arrows. He went into the ''armory'' and took two of the arrows that he already bought from the table. I''m gonna go see where that goblin is coming from. P.K. Pally walked with a quick pace towards the other end of the main road, holding the bow and arrows.


    As he was nearing the edge of the village the blue screen popped up again.

    he waited by one of the buildings by the edge of the village.

    shortly after that last blue screen, a goblin materialized right outside of the village, on the main road. It looked as if it was invisible, then slowly became less translucent until it was solid. I''m not letting you get away this time. P.K. Pally set down four of the arrows, and drew the fifth in his bow. He walked into the road, and aimed at the oncoming goblin. He fired an arrow and hit the goblin square in the chest.

    looking down at the ground to pick up another arrow, he realized he left the others off the side of the road, and went to pick them up. When he reached the arrows on the ground, he drew another into his bow, and aimed at the goblin that was just passing him on the road. The goblin was very close. He fired the arrow, and missed. It flew past the goblin and hit one of the stone buildings, and the arrow snapped in half. The goblin continued its slow walk towards the archway. P.K. Pally picked up the remaining three arrows that he had with him, and rushed into the road, behind the goblin. He dropped two arrows, and loaded the third onto the bow. He drew the bowstring back, and fired. It may have been because his hands were shaky, but this arrow did not fly as straight as the others, and it hit the goblin in the back of its right thigh.

    The arrow that was sticking through the goblins thigh, and poking out the other side did not slow it in the slightest. He picked up another arrow, and loaded it onto his bow. He started to walk after the goblin. I wonder how close I can get before it turns around to face me. Soon he was almost right behind the goblin. I have a clear shot at its head from here. He drew his bow, and aimed right at the back of the goblins head. This should take care of him. He let the arrow loose, and missed. How did I miss? I''m so close, that should have hit him right in the middle of his head. But somehow I did miss. P.K. Pally turned around to get the last arrow, and saw that it was a bit far. Worried that if he went back to get the arrow, the goblin would make its way to the arch and disappear, P.K. Pally dropped his bow, and drew his dagger. He walked up behind the goblin, as close as he was when he tried to hit it in the head, and raised his dagger in the air with his right hand. Suddenly the goblin turned around to face him. Startled, P.K. Pally jumped back. To his surprise, the goblin turned around and started his walk again.


    ¡°Here goes nothin¡±


    He raised his dagger, and charged at the goblin, swinging down before the goblin had a chance to turn around. He hit the goblin in between his right shoulder and his neck.

    The goblin started to turn around, and P.K. Pally pulled out his dagger, and pulled the goblin to the ground under him. The arrow in the goblins chest snapped, and the goblin scratched at his face.

    P.K. Pally held the goblins right arm down with his left hand, and stabbed the goblin in the chest.

    He pulled out the dagger, ready to strike again, and the goblin vanished. The goblins body was replaced by what seemed to be some gp, that soon after flew into the air and dissipated.

    P.K. Pally was now sitting on the ground alone. The arrow that was in the goblins leg was now lying on the ground. He stood up, sheathed his dagger, and brushed the dust off of his pants. Picking up the two nearby unbroken arrows, he walked back up the road for the third, and then headed towards the ''armory''.


    When he got to the armory, he stepped in only to pick up his remaining three arrows, and then headed away from the village. I think killing that goblin was the qualification to get out of this cursed village. Before he reached the barrier, another blue box appeared in his vision.
