《The child of the apocalypse》 prologue Demons. Angels. The Fay. Vampires, and zombies, and shapeshifters. Gods. All fake right? All make believe? Wrong. They are all very very real. But they aren¡¯t even close to the worst thing out there. Eldritch abominations straight out of your worst nightmare? Real. Void beings with no real corporeal form, who live only to satisfy their unending insatiable hunger? Real. But they aren¡¯t the worst things out there either. I am. My father was Mortimus. The horseman of death, God of darkness, disease, hatred, and death, and one of the original Gods. Latin got their word for death, mortum, from his name. My mother was Maluma, Goddess of evil, mutation, dark prophecy, magic, and strife, and another of the original 13 gods and goddesses. Latin took evil from her name, malum. Now you¡¯re probably thinking they had a child, and I¡¯m that child, just another God, so why am I the worst thing out there? Well, you¡¯d only be partly right about that. Mortimus and Maluma conceived me in their twisted romance, but I was never a child for them. I was an experiment. A chance to create something new.Stolen novel; please report. The average God spends 2 years in their mother¡¯s womb before they¡¯re born. I spent 3000. My father harvested the souls and essences of millions, of every species known. Before this no one knew him as the horseman of death, but he killed, no, what he did was so much worse than death. He stole the soul from a million beings from every different species and gave them to my mother. She took all of their power, all of what made them Them, and, using her ungodly Magic¡¯s and powers of mutation, put them all into me. Gods, goddesses, monsters, voidlings, animals, plants, everything forced into me and merged into one. A million angry, hateful souls merged with mine, or at least what I would¡¯ve been without them, and they made me. But I was young. It was too much power for my young unborn soul. Every iota of power that every single being among millions possessed; all in the hands of an unborn child. I lost control of it and caused the end of the world. Little did my parents know that power I lost control of is less than 1% percent of what I would possess later on. Interesting fact; scientists today wonder what caused the extinction of dinosaurs? Well now you have your answer. My parents, of course, had prepared for this. They rushed me down to a major leyline they had pumped full of mana to the point of bursting, and my mother entered awaiting the time of my birth. In the roughly 4 minutes between the time of injecting me with the souls and getting me into the leyline half of the beings on the planet died. 3000 years later I was born. Prologue 2/intro Every god and goddess born comes into the world with a concept. For some it¡¯s an element, like fire, water, earth, space and so many more. Some come with an emotion, like hatred, anger, pain or fear. Some even come into the world with a greater concept. Such as creation, life, death. The universal constants. But the scary part isn¡¯t that Gods are born with a concept, but rather when a god is born they can create an entirely new concept. There are a thousand Gods of fire. But there was also a first, and when he came into being there was the first fire ever. I was born with every kind of concept in existence, as my father had stolen the essence of every kind of God in existence. But I was unprecedented. I didn¡¯t come with just one new concept, which was already a rarity amongst Gods. No, rather; I came into existence with 4 new concepts. I sincerely wish that had been the one thing normal about me. When I was born I brought to life entropy. Now, as a word that can mean more than one thing, I embody them all. One thing entropy can mean is a thermodynamics law that essentially just means disorder. There were many Gods of disorder that was nothing new. The other thing I brought about from that word was new, however, and not something so benign. Have you ever been watching tv or reading something online about the sun eventually imploding? Have you ever heard about the eventual end of the universe through all the energy leaving? It¡¯s all very true, and it¡¯s my fault. With my concept of entropy I brought about the concept that everything will die. People, the earth, the sun, all of space and time, it will eventually end to be replaced with something new, and that was brought about by me.Reading on this site? This novel is published elsewhere. Support the author by seeking out the original. Oh, and I¡¯m sure you¡¯ve all heard of Alzheimer¡¯s? What about depression? Suicide? Psychosis? Sociopaths? Schizophrenia? Those and so much more are all my fault too. At the moment of my birth I brought about all mental problems and issues, as at my birth I brought about the concept of insanity. Drugs wouldn¡¯t work if not for me either; after all, what are drugs if not short stints of insanity? Did you know that the root of all negative emotions is fear? Anger, envy, hatred, anything truly negative that you feel is caused by fear in one way or another. Now those concepts already existed when I was born but fear fuels all of them. At the moment of my birth all negative emotions were enhanced by a 100 times, as the moment of my birth fear was released into the world. Finally, I saved the worst for last. I¡¯m sure some would disagree with me on this one. I¡¯ve seen it all, and I¡¯ve seen this concept drive people to death. I¡¯ve seen this single concept drive entire civilizations and planets to extinction. For when I was born I brought into the world the concept of love. At this very moment I was born from the womb of the evil creature that held me within for thousands of years. With my birth I changed the very essence of the world forever. Chapter 1 Mortimus looked at his partner in, not love, but rather in the creation of their masterpiece. ¡°He is magnificent. Never before have I felt such palpable power exuding from the very pores of a mere newborn.¡± A dark smile full of malice covered his dark handsome face. Mortimus was almost ethereal in appearance; he was one of those people that could be either 25 or 50. He had a long narrow face, with hollowed out cheeks, protruding cheekbones, eyes blacker than the blackest night, long black hair that fell to his waist, and wrinkles in just the right spots to accentuate his good looks all across his face; he was almost unnaturally good looking to the point he looked inhuman. Not to mention the aura of death that enshrouded his every step. Maluma turned to him with a slight cold smile, ¡°Indeed. I read his fatelines. He has the potential to be the darkest of souls. He will be our greatest warrior and, with him, we will finally throw down the light Gods from their undeserved position and claim our rightful place as rulers.¡± Maluma could only be described as a goddess in appearance, with big eerie eyes that shifted in color between electric blue, earthly brown, forest green, fire red, and a grey that appeared to be a mist of souls, massive protruding cheekbones, long silver hair, and a perpetual evil cold smile upon her face. She summed up the look of cold goddess After this statement they looked at each other with cold grins; each knew the other would betray them as soon as they ascended as rulers. The dark does not abide competition nor compromise. 6 years later I killed a girl today. She wasn¡¯t trying to hurt me. She didn¡¯t call me names, or take my stuff, or do anything at all. My parents brought her in front of me, tied up and gagged. I had never seen anyone except my parents, and the people they had killed, so I had no way to gauge the age of another, but later I would know she was no more than 10. Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions. My father handed me a dagger composed of not metal, but darkness. Looking into the blade gave one the feeling of never ending pain and darkness just below the surface. My father smiled, for once not an evil smile, but a brilliant gleaming smile at me. This would be a stepping stone in my molding into his perfect little soldier. ¡°Kill her. She is nothing to you, to anyone. She is an insignificant waste that will never amount to anything. Nothing will change from her death. You need to understand your place in the world, and you need to understand their place in the world. She is nothing but an ant to us, to you. Kill her and ascend to your rightful place in this world.¡± I listened to my fathers words intently. I smiled at him after he finished; he¡¯s my father of course he¡¯s right. I approached her with the dagger in hand, smiling the entire time. I walked all the way up to her and cocked back my arm preparing to plunge it into her just as my father had taught me. It was then that I felt something new, something... Bad. I really looked at the small elven girl in front of me for the first time, and I didn¡¯t like what I saw. I saw primal fear. The kind of fear that only comes about when someone knows they¡¯re about to die, and doesn¡¯t accept it. I could feel the fear radiating from her, and a part of me loved it; even at a young age I almost reveled in the feeling of absolute power over another. The feeling of knowing someone else¡¯s life was in your hands, and only I could decide whether they lived or died. Another part of me was disgusted at the fear I felt, all directed towards me. She was terrified of me to the point of almost having a heart attack and I realized I didn¡¯t want to do this. She has done nothing to me she didn¡¯t deserve to die just because my father said she was insignificant I turned and looked back at my father, not with the usual smile and pride that he was my father, but now with disgust. ¡°No. I¡¯m not going to kill her; she hasn¡¯t done anything to me why does she deserve to die.¡± As I said this my fathers face went from a brilliant gleaming smile to something I had never seen from him before, something evil. For a split second I saw the mask he always wore in front of me break, and I felt terror for the first time. I had seen him kill in cold blood. I had seen him devour a soul, even if I didn¡¯t know what he was doing; I knew it was something horrible. But never had I seen such rage and insanity. Never had I seen the monster that laid behind the thin veneer of pleasantness he wore. As quickly as it had appeared it was gone, but I had seen it and I would remember it for the rest of my life. My fathers face turned back to that same gleaming smile he had worn before, but now I saw through it. ¡°Here¡¯s what we¡¯ll do,¡± my father spoke in a calm and pleasant voice. ¡°For every second that you don¡¯t kill her she will feel the worst kind of agony imaginable.¡± With that said he walked forward and touched his fingers to the top of her head. Her eyes rolled into the back of her head in pure agony, and even with the gag you could hear her sobs. It was at this moment I could feel her fear disappear, and the longing for death she now felt. Taking a deep breath I stepped forward and thrust the dagger into her eyes socket and into her brain. That was the story of how I took my first life. Chapter 2 The day after I took my first life the training started. Now most people imagine training to fight as training to fight, but that isn¡¯t what I was trained in. No I wasn¡¯t taught to fight; I was taught to hurt, and I was taught to kill. I was taught to kill someone before they ever noticed me. I was taught a fighting style that could only be described as brutal, to strike fast and to always go for either debilitating injuries, or for the lethal strike. From dawn to dusk every day for two years I trained. I bled, I sweat, I fought. I learned to use the environment against my opponent. I learned to always put the sun in their eyes. I learned to fight dirty, to throw sand in their eyes and use roots and obstacles around me to trip them. Everything around me was a weapon to be used. My father kept bringing me new people to kill, one a week like clockwork. I no longer hesitate, for I know what will happen if I don¡¯t. I became an eight year-old killing machine. But that was just the start. After the training ended the missions began, and that¡¯s where I am now; on my first assassination. I crept silently along the perimeter of the massive compound composed of a dark stone with a wooden palisade surrounding the entire thing, barefoot so as to make less sound. Two guards walk around the corner, one a shifter the other an elf I felt with nothing but intuition. In the darkness that surrounded me, my small frame making me almost invisible to begin with, I crouched behind two bushes. Never take a chance was the first rule I¡¯d been taught. The two guards continued their route forward, but not attentively, as they chatted and laughed the entire way through. Little did they know their inattentiveness would make their end. Slinking silently forward as they continued to laugh and jest, I quickly reached them. I knew this had to be quick if they lived through my first attack everyone in the compound would be alerted. I raised the crossbow with a quarrel tipped in a paralyzing agent, and from behind I shot it through the shifters throat. Before he could make a sound he choked on his own blood and died. The elf turned quickly to face me raising his sword, and with a magic spell on the top of his tongue ready to blast me into oblivion, but before he finished I threw a dagger at his midsection. He smirked at my small figure in haughty derision, effortlessly blocking it with his sword. Too bad he didn¡¯t see the needle coated in basilisk venom I shot at him seconds later. The needle flew a little off course, striking his shoulder rather than his heart. That didn¡¯t matter. The poison did its job. His skin started to corrode; the poison forcing his skin to go into a state of necrosis, but far far quicker. He gave one last attempt at foiling my plans. I saw his quick intake of breath in preparation to scream, but before he could I jumped on him forcing him to the ground, placing my hand over his mouth to muffle any noise, and struck my knife deep into his stomach and twisted. This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author''s consent. Report any appearances on Amazon. He looked at me in sorrow; in his eyes I saw the same look I had seen in so many before. The look of a man who knew that his life was over. I moved my hand as I saw the life leave his eyes, but before he died he grabbed my arm and looked me deep in the eyes with one final question, ¡°wh.. why?¡± Before his hand fell away and he slumped against the ground lifelessly. For the first time since my first kill I asked myself the same question. Why. All of the others I had killed I¡¯d never even heard their voice; they¡¯d always came gagged. His question rattled me in a way nothing else ever had. I slumped back against the wall, I had 17 minutes before another guard patrol would come around the corner, I had time to waste. His voice resounded in my head, and was all I could hear. Why had I done this? Why did I kill? Why did I train for two long hard years just to get better at killing? Why was I even here? It was at that moment I realized the answer. My father told me to. My mother told me to. But why did I listen to them? I don¡¯t have to. I¡¯m my own person I don¡¯t have to do what they tell me to. I finally, for the first time in my life, realized what I had to do. I had to escape. I had to get away from them. I knew, however, that this wasn¡¯t the moment for that. I was tracked at every moment, as of now there was no way to escape, and I had a mission I had to complete. I quickly hid the bodies in the brush, and in the dark no one would ever notice the blood even with torches. I threw a grappling hook over the wall. Climbing as quickly as possible I soon reached the top and pulled the rope attached to the grappling hook over the edge of the wall. I had no specific target. Tonight my objective was to kill everyone in the entire compound and I knew how to do it. I ran around the outskirts of the palisade pouring alcohol along the entire thing. Thankfully there was only one guard on the palisade who was easily disposed of with a quick ambush and knife across the throat. Slipping down off the palisade and into the compound I poured gallons and gallons of alcohol that I kept in an interspacial ring all along the dark stone. I encountered no one along the way not even maids. It was too late for anyone besides the few guards outside to be awake. As I finished pouring the alcohol I heard something from one of the rooms, it sounded like... crying. I knew that I shouldn¡¯t. It went against everything I had been taught to check it out, but I couldn¡¯t help myself. Pushing open the door I saw a young girl probably around my age sobbing her eyes out into a pillow. She was dressed in some of the finest clothes I had ever seen so I knew she wasn¡¯t just anyone. In that moment I made a decision that would change my fate in ways I could never have comprehended at the time. I decided to save just one... Just her. I stabbed a tranquilizer dart into the back of her neck, and picking her up and cradling her in my arms, I walked out of the room. I set her down one last time as I reached their protective formations that prevent fires. Taking the dagger I had killed my first victim with, I plunged it deep into the stone that held the ruins to prevent fire, effectively destroying it. With one last look around I picked the girl back out and left the compound. I reached the palisade quickly having memorized the route to get there, climbing back up it as quickly as possible with the girl tied to my back with rope I then slid my way down the rope to get out. My powers were sealed at my birth to come out slowly as I aged so I could gain control of them as time moved forwards, but I had just enough power to summon a small flame. Taking one last look at the imposing compound before me I threw the flame onto the palisade. The alcohol quickly ignited and soon I could hear the screams of the hundreds of people burning to death inside. I set the girl down at the edge of the forest prepared to leave without ever even speaking with her but as I began to walk away she opened her eyes, ¡°who.. who are you?¡± She asked groggily, an effect of the tranquilizer. I stopped for a single moment and looked at her, as I did I saw her memorizing my face and pushing it to a place she would never forget. I walked away quickly into the forest without answering her question. Chapter 3 Maluma smiled a grin the devil would be proud of, ¡°good good. I told you he would leave her alive if he heard her crying.¡± Mortimus grinned, ¡°you were right, I had my doubts, but it all went as planned. I never imagined it would go so perfectly.¡± They both laughed uproariously into the blackness of the night as they watched their child walk back with a look of confusion upon his face. ¡°With every second that passes his fatelines grow ever darker.¡± Maluma intoned as she looked at his future. 2 years later Mortimus smiled proudly down upon his now 10 year old son. ¡°Today is a very important day as you well know. As of today you are 10 years-old, and it¡¯s time for your naming ceremony.¡± The boy had an almost completely vacant look in his eyes, as if he was dead on the inside. ¡°I know father, we¡¯ve been over this a thousand times.¡± It was an ancient ceremony that almost predated time. Unlike other species, Gods and Goddesses didn¡¯t have their name picked, instead they were like demons. They were born with a name chosen by the universe, and on their tenth birthday they had a ceremony to find it. It must be understood this name they call forth isn¡¯t just a name. It¡¯s the sum of who they are, and who they will be. Sometimes it¡¯s a 4 letter name and sometimes it¡¯s a 100 letter name, but whatever it is it has power. A Gods power is their name, and their concept; without one it¡¯s impossible to call forth the other. Maluma painted the sigils and runes needed to power the ceremony into the ground before looking back at them. ¡°It is ready, step into the circle boy, and claim your birthright.¡±This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source. The boy stepped into the circle and instantly the air vibrated and shimmered. The sky around them turned dark and ominous as large bolts of pure black lightning rained down upon the earth. A circle of fire leapt up around the boy and water rained down from the heavens. The world became silent. The animals stopped frolicking. The birds stopped their chirping. A palpable tension was in the air; everything everywhere knew that something big was happening. Something that would usher in a new era. An earthquake rumbled forth and every volcano on the planet erupted. Mortimus turned to Maluma for the first time ever with a look of panic upon his inhuman face, ¡°What¡¯s happening?¡± He shouted over the tempest the wind had become, ¡°this isn¡¯t supposed to be happening!¡± His voice was shaky. This was completely unprecedented in their history, and they had been around since the dawn of the universe. Maluma had a look of hunger, for power, and for control. Power and control over everything and everyone. ¡°Isn¡¯t he beautiful Mortimus? He¡¯s awakening some of his power for the first time, and this is nothing compared to what he could become. Nothing.¡± At this moment as the boy stood in the circle digging his nails into his hand so hard blood was drawn, an omniscient timeless voice rang out, ¡°you¡¯re an interesting one aren¡¯t you little one? You have the potential to be greater than even I.¡± The boy discovered something then. Names weren¡¯t chosen at birth, no; rather, this being, whatever it was, was the one to choose it. He felt indescribable power radiating off of this Godlike being. Not the power that radiates off of the conceptual Gods, but the power of a True God. ¡°What are you? Who are you?¡± He asked in a shaky voice to the creature before him. Looking around he noticed something. Time was frozen. He saw a lightning bolt frozen in midair and everything was completely still. It was eerily beautiful. The lack of motion. The lack of everything. Have you ever heard true silence? It¡¯s impossible even when we don¡¯t notice it there¡¯s some noise. But now... there wasn¡¯t. It was creepy. The great being shook his head, ¡°you need to be far greater than you are now. If I told you who or what I am now you would lose your sanity. No mortal being could comprehend me. Seek me out when you are far far more powerful than you are now and I just might answer your question. For now it¡¯s about time for me to leave.¡± With that time resumed. The beautiful noise resumed and I could hear the shouting of my parents, the tornado forming, the thunder. Never had I been so thankful for sound and motion in my life. Etched into the dirt in front of me was a name. My name. Finis Omnium Praenuntia. Chapter 4 Maluma looked at the name carved into the ground. Harbinger of the end. The end of what? She thought to herself. Most assume that means the end of the times, the end of the world. But she knew better than anyone that names like this could be very misleading; just because something seemed obvious didn¡¯t mean it was. This time, with a bit of trepidation in her gaze, she hesitantly looked at the boy... no Finis now she corrected herself mentally. She looked at Finis¡¯s fatelines and for the first time in her life she felt something other than hunger for power and hate. For the first time in her life she felt something resembling... Pity. Finis stumbled into the forest in almost abject horror at the revelation thrust upon him; the words translating in his head the moment he read them. ¡°Harbinger of the end.¡± Is that my destiny? My fate? To be the end of everything? He ran, as he had always done. Sprinting out into the forest; away from his problems, away from the anger and pain he had lived with his entire life. As he ran a single, selfish, question resounded in his mind. ¡°Why me?¡± He questioned. ¡°Is this a punishment? In a past life did I commit some atrocity or genocide for this to be my fate? Is this the punishment for my sins in this life?¡± He knew what this meant. What his name represented. Sprinting forward into the darkness that now encompassed the world surrounding him; he ran with a single dark desire. To take his own life. To end it before he ended the life of every other. It was all too much. To know you basically summed up to be Satan, but worse. Satan failed. He sprinted forward, rushing with an intensity he had never failed before. He saw it. What he had been looking for this entire time. The cliff. Continuing his rush forward; he felt it. Excitement. Joy. He would no longer be a pawn to his parents. No longer would he kill and murder in their evil names. Just as he reached the edge and prepared to jump; he felt a powerful magical force take ahold of him and stop his momentum with a painful thud. His father smirked with malice in his gaze; no longer concealing the ancient evil that had always rested within his dark black soul. ¡°Did you really think we would let our precious little experiment kill himself? No, no we have invested far too much effort in you now for that.¡± Finis turned his head just in time to see a massive, black, spectral hand made of wriggling darkness smack the back of his head; knocking him unconscious. This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere. Finis awoke in a daze; minutes, hours, days later. Gazing around him, he saw the inside of the cave he had known for so long. Groggily razing his head and touching the back he felt a massive welt raised up upon his skull. He groaned in pain as he touched it. At this moment Mortimus and Maluma walked in. ¡°Ah good, you¡¯re awake.¡± Mortimus said. As finis gazed at him, he saw... something. He saw past the visage mortals saw when they looked at him. He saw underneath his facade. What he saw terrified him as he¡¯d never been terrified before. A black skull ablaze with a dark flame looked back at him from atop a shimmering hole of pure darkness. It felt wrong; unnatural, as if something that was an abomination and never meant to exist. Then it was gone as quickly as it had appeared, but he felt what he saw was real. Something whispered in his mind as he thought this, ¡°perspicacity.¡± He didn¡¯t know what that meant, but it felt right. ¡°You obviously can¡¯t be trusted any longer.¡± Maluma took her turn to speak. ¡°You now have a bond upon you, placed to keep you from doing anything foolish like that again; after all, what if we hadn¡¯t been there to stop you?¡± She chuckled at the look of extreme horror and sorrow that appeared upon his face at her words. ¡°Now it¡¯s time to begin your magic training.¡± They led him out of the cave and into the opening his martial training had taken place in. Maluma began her lesson, for, if nothing else, she was an excellent teacher. ¡°There are many branches of magic. Too many to count as a matter of fact; however, they all stem from the Godly Magic¡¯s.¡± She pauses for a moment, as if to gather her thoughts before continuing. ¡°life, death, chaos, order, body, the elements, mind, soul, void, blood, fate, destruction, creation, decay, runes, time, space, light, dark, hell power, heavenly power, dream, illusion, aether, eldritch, celestial, and emotion are the 27 Godly Magic¡¯s that all others stem from.¡± She continued before making me recite them all to her to make sure I¡¯d been listening intently. ¡°All other Magic¡¯s come from a combination of these powers. Some are lesser than the original and some are greater. Shadow is one such example of a mixed power. Shadow comes from the mixture of light and dark power in a 50/50 ratio.¡± She smacked him in the back of the head after noticing his attention had begun to astray. Glaring at him, as if daring him to lose focus again, she continued, ¡°mortals think of it as mana, but that¡¯s silly. As if some energy in the air could be eternal and power feats such as these.¡± She snorted in haughty derision laughing at those who believed this, as she conjured a ball of darkness in the air the size of our entire cave. I could feel the absolute heat radiating off of it; more than any fire could possibly put off even at this size. ¡°We are born with a piece of concept within us. You see when a God is born with a new concept they bring that concept into our reality. They aren¡¯t; however, the start of that concept entirely. There are an infinite number of realities containing a nigh infinite number of concepts. When we use magic we pull it from another reality composed entirely of that single concept through a connection brought on by our power, and condense it inside of our very souls. The more attuned you are to a magic, whether through species, hard work, natural pool of power used to draw in other powers, or any number of different possible influences, the more you are able to draw in and release into our world as magic.¡± She took a deep breath after her long winded speech. ¡°Moving on there is a ranking system for the power of a particular spell or power. Ranked from 1 all the way to 27; coincidentally, the same number as the number of Godly Magic¡¯s. With 1 being the weakest, such as a candle-flame or small ball of water, and 27 being strong enough to destroy entire realities. ¡± After her long winded lecture, Maluma started teaching her young disciple magic. For the next 5 years, all Finis did was learn magic and theory until one day when everything changed; permanently.
