《Adventure (place holder name)》
The night and morning before
Classes, jobs and experience. The three pillars of our world they dictate who wins and who losses, your station in life, whether you¡¯re a king or a peasant, figuratively of course. Since the revolt people are no longer segregated based on their birth class treated as lesser beings by those above. Of course some there are some nobles and religious zealots that still believe in the old regime. However, the council runs a tight ship and nips that in the butt here in Zion I wish I say it¡¯s the same in other countries.
Here were free to be what we want to be regardless of our birth classes, nowadays farmers can be great generals leading troops into glorious battles, humble maids can become great sorceresses and heroes can be a chef if they please. Sure there are perks to going with the same job as your class, for one you don¡¯t have to waste time leveling your job separately, people that do that usually progress at astounding compared to people that don¡¯t. However, that doesn¡¯t mean people that don¡¯t fall behind they get access to a more diverse set of skills. Imagine it in the heat of battle imagine a soldier who¡¯s been cornered by a group of spearmen, suddenly throwing a huge fireball utterly decimating his enemies or a farmer with the druid class being able to grow an entire field of crops overnight.
The door in the corner of my room slowly slivers open creaking ever so slightly allowing the glow of a small a hand candle to shine through, illuminating the wooden planks making up my floor creating a beautiful contrast to the soft moonlight shining through my window, gently lighting my simple room.
I looked over at the now open door to see my mum standing in the opening draped in her warn blue nightgown with a miffed expression etched on her slightly aging face. In a less than impressed tone she asks, ¡°Why you are still awake Joseph?¡± I¡¯m my confusion the only thing I could articulate was a simple, ¡°eh?¡± it¡¯s like she doesn¡¯t realise what day it is tomorrow but her and pa have been going on about it nonstop for the past month almost crying about how their little boy is going to leave them, find a wife, move to the other side of the world and never see them again after tomorrow. Despite what I tell them but I guess it¡¯s understandable, it¡¯s not every day your kid gets his class.
¡°How can I fall asleep, you do remember what day it is tomorrow right?¡± I questioned. Trying to act nonchalantly she says ¡°yeah, it¡¯s Friday?¡± my face drops in an instant, sure I know she joking but for a split second I believed that she actually forgot. Noticing the change in my expression she bursts out laughing. ¡°HA HA HA, I can¡¯t believe you actually thought I¡¯d forget.¡± Feeling he blood rushing to my cheeks I manage to sputter out a small chuckle of my own, ¡°ha ha ha, I¡¯m really excited!¡±
With a gentle motherly smile on her face she says, ¡°I know dear just don¡¯t be disappointed if you don¡¯t get a class you want, well still love you no matter what class you get.¡± ¡°I know, but what if I¡¯m a warrior or a mage or even a hero!¡± my excitement reached a climax as I said the final word. ¡°Even if I am a farmer I could find a druid or an apothecary to train under, this isn¡¯t the old days I don¡¯t have to just be a farmer,¡± I said confidently. Sighing in resignation she says, ¡°well whatever you do, you¡¯ll be great now go to sleep big day tomorrow.¡± She gently kisses me on the forehead and leaves the room.
Before I knew it it was already morning, I don¡¯t know when I fell asleep but It mustn¡¯t have been too long ago because I feel really tired but my inner excitement won¡¯t allow me to go back to sleep. In a rush, I grab the closest close to my bed ignoring which ones I chose and rusheddown the stairs to the sight of my mother cooking breakfast and the table set for the three of us. ¡±Morning mum, where¡¯s dad?¡± Without looking back from the pot of stew she¡¯s placing cut vegetables into she says, ¡°He''s feeding the animals, go give him a hand breakfast will be ready for you when you get back.¡± Leaving through the back door I run to the barn where keep the animals. The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
Entering I see my dad placing the slop in the boar pens, raising my heals off the ground I slowly sneak up behind him using the soft hay scattered across the ground to cushioning my steps I slowly approach my target, extending my middle and index fingers on each hand like makeshift knifes I poke him on both sides in the ribs. Jumping I shock he turns around and ruffles my hair and says, ¡°You little scamp it wouldn¡¯t surprise me if you turned out to be an assassin.¡± After my laughing calmed down I told him, ¡°Mum told me to help you feed the animals.¡± Stroking his rough chin as though pondering life itself he says, ¡°I¡¯m pretty much done, you can feed the horned horses, be careful of the boys, its mating season and they¡¯re getting a bit rowdy.¡±
I pick up a heavy bucket of horse food and make my way towards the horses in the field with unsteady steps being extra careful not to drop any of the food. I started by feeding the females and the young because they were the easier ones some of them even come up to me and chew my clothes and rub up against me playfully. Once finished I make my way towards the males albeit a little nervous last year one of the more boisterous ones almost impaled me.
Slinking into the other field where the males are, I¡¯m greeted by a mad dash from all angles, all I can hear are loud thumping noises I can¡¯t tell which is louder my heart or the horde of beasts charging at me, holding the bucket of feed close to my chest tightly as the beasts get closer and closer, cold sweet begins to poor down my back as gruesome images of me being impaled quickly flash in my mind flood my mind, no matter how many times this happens it still scares the hell out of me, good job dad taught me what to do. I quickly place my fingers in my mouth and whistle then I place one hand up in the air and the other out in front of my palm extended in front of me and wait.
Coming to a holt all of the horses skid along the ground for a couple of meter kicking up clumps of dirt as the stop about an arm¡¯s length away from me letting out a small sigh, I get back to work and put their food in the mini troths hanging from fences surrounding the field. A couple of the younger ones found it funny to prick me back side which was annoying good job horned horses are smarter than regular horses and know only to do it lightly.
The rest of the morning was pretty uneventful, we ate breakfast and prepared the cart for the journey to town, on the way there we passed the stream me and Baxter used to play in when we were younger and a whole bunch untouched fields that stretched into eternity, the only thing that broke the river of fields was the Zawa mountain range that separates Zion from Brox, I asked my parents about it once and apparently the whole mountain was actually the home of a rock dragon I don¡¯t believe them, when I was younger I did but now I know it¡¯s just a tale to keep kids from climbing it. Although there are countless stories of countless Zionians and Broxians alike attempting to cross the mountain either going missing or returning in sorry states.
As we approach the town gate we come across a lengthy line of similar carts housing other family¡¯s queueing up in front of the large Iron Gate, connected to slabs of large yellow stones stacked magnificently into a beautiful but intimidating wall topped with a few guards patrolling along the top and guarding the gate. Upon seeing them my dad puffed out his chest and said proudly, ¡°When I was your age and got my class I was a guard myself,¡± nostalgia glistening in his eyes he continued, ¡°I remember one time at a group of bandits attacked the city I was stationed in your mother was almost killed, but I thanks the protector perk I heroically defended your mother.¡± Blushing like a school girl my mum chimes in, ¡°Thankfully I was a nurse at the time and nursed you father back to health.¡± Sharing a look with my dad and smiling she says, ¡°And the rest was history.¡±
Confused I ask, ¡°why are you farmers now?¡± the shared a look again but this time it wasn¡¯t nearly as warm, silence lingered for a good couple of seconds before my dad stated, ¡°after the revolt me and your mother were sick of all the fighting and bloodshed and decided we wanted to start a family.¡± Chiming in my mum says gently, ¡°and that¡¯s when you come in.¡± I appreciated what my parents said, after all, I wouldn¡¯t exist if they didn¡¯t retire to the countryside, but the revolt happened many years before I was born and my parents would have barely been 20 at the time, but I chose not to ruin the moment.
Now at the front of the queue, my heart beats faster and faster just knowing that in a couple of hours ill have a class of my own and I can finally begin my adventure. I just wish this guard would be a little quicker checking our cart.
class is in session
The town, well you could call it a town only if you had no concept of what a town actually is, a more apt description would be a fledgling city. Compared to other towns in Zion the town of Leafly could be described as quite affluent thanks to the ample trade routes reaching out to the capital city as well other well off providences and countless smaller towns, thanks to these trading routes leafly has become one of the best places in Zion for trading. Most well-known for our bustling market that fills almost a quarter of Leafly and our amazing tradesmen that craft all manners of wonderful items from jewellery to armours to weaponry, we even have a couple of people that can make hollow staffs, it truly is the great place and I¡¯m blown away every time I see it.
Upon entering the town, the smell of freshly baked goods pervades my nose assaulting my senses. I¡¯m almost overpowered by the scent of cake, pies and other assorted pastries wafting through the air, it¡¯s almost enough to make me dismount from my seat in the cart and explore these delicacies one by one. Almost, I¡¯m here for a very special reason and I shan¡¯t be deterred by such things, but that doesn¡¯t stop my stomach from rumbling. Hearing my stomach my parent chuckle and my dad says, ¡°after the awakening well get something to eat before we leave.¡± When he started talking I was elated but upon hearing the last part my excitement suddenly dies down. That¡¯s right after today there¡¯s a chance I won¡¯t be going home for a while. Putting on a brave face and stealing my resolve I reply, ¡°Sure!¡± making sure to flash them both a big smile.
¡°Can¡¯t we go any faster?¡± I ask restlessly. My mum looks at me and says, ¡°Just a little longer sweaty, you know how long it takes to park a cart and secure the horses.¡± Chiming in in a gruff voice my dad says, ¡°The boy¡¯s just excited to find out what his class is, I was the same way.¡± Hearing my dad say that look up at the stadium in the centre of town my excitement once again building up, I wonder what the stadium is like from the inside, when we came in the past my parents never let me look go watch any matches saying it wasn¡¯t good for children to watch those bloody things. But it¡¯s always interested me, master swordsmen dueling for the adoration of the crowd, grand wizards wowing the audiences, shocking upsets and underdogs becoming champions. Just looking at those marble pillars leading up to its gigantic gates makes me conjure images of valiant warriors and mages.
Finally getting inside the Colosseum my parents are ushered into the seating areas surrounding the arena, rows upon rows of seats stacked high in the sky funneling the audiences¡¯ gases to the sandy pit bellow my feet. I was blown away when I first stepped on the sand just thinking about the battles that have taken place here. Looking up I attempt to spot my parents in the crowd, but its impossible there are too many people giving the crowd looks. I give up but I do notice one of the observation boxes on the furthest end of the Colosseum wall and the 5 people inside.
On the leftmost side, I see a rather large man, with greasy black hair wearing a blacksmith apron and a small satchel with the ends of various craftsmen tools poking out, he must be the head of the craftsman guild in Leafy, Hector Smith.
Sat next to him is an old inconspicuous woman wearing a baby blue shall, clutching a small cane carrying a gentle smile on her. But I know better than to judge her based on her appearance she¡¯s well-known in this town. Her name is Barbara sheer, a well-known assassin, you before her retirement to Lealfy. As odd as a well-known assassin sounds, she could kill you before you even realized what happened, she¡¯s probably here representing the clan she came from.
On the right side were the leader of the adventurers guild, red 4 armed Majin called Dakkar, wearing a silver breastplate and blades strapped to various parts of his body. Quite an intimidating person, the average human only comes up to his chest, the scariest part is he¡¯s actually rather small for a Majin. I''ve even heard the tallest can rival giants.
Besides him is his wife Sajiri a beautiful blue Djinn with a beautiful sapphire protruding from her forehead. She¡¯s wearing a blue mage''s robe with a complex runic designed decorating it. Staring at the crowd of youngster I¡¯m part of, she turns to whispers something in her husband¡¯s ear. I wonder if she senses any magical energy from me. What if she saw me and she¡¯s considering making me her apprentice? I know its farfetched but what if?
Looking towards the old man in the center of the people I know exactly who he is. Father Alex, head of the church here in Leafy, a gifted healer and a kind man there are numerous stories of him visiting the slums healing diseases for free. Holding his hands behind his back he stands up and slowly walks toward the front of the observation box. This story has been unlawfully obtained without the author''s consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.
It¡¯s hard to say who in the crowd noticed him first, but suddenly the atmosphere suddenly changed, everybody in the Colosseum had their attention focused on this simple man. Clearing his through father Alex begins to talk, ¡±Thank you for coming everyone,¡± pausing for effect he continues, ¡°it always makes me so proud to see young buds at the start of their lives, about to embark on their own journeys into the world, the amount of happiness I feel from being the one to give you that first push Is unbelievable, now let us begin.¡± The crowd applauses.
The first person to step onto the podium was a cheetah kin girl with brown shoulder length hair, confidently standing atop the podium she gives a slight curtsy to father Alex and awaits her awakening. Seeing this father Alex smiles and extends is right hand, a green glow begins to emanate from it and then it extends into the sky warping it letters finally become the word ranger. The crowd explodes, but the girl takes no notice of the crow instead looking into the air in front of her for a while before dismounting the podium.
Surprisingly, the next up was Baxter practically flying up the stairs, in fact, I swear I saw him skipping a couple of them. Smiling at father Alex he gives a stiff bow. He¡¯s always been like that leaping about, sometimes it¡¯s just hard keeping up with him it¡¯s like he¡¯s a beast kin and half as heavy. I wonder what class he is? Probably some kind of scout? Father Alex repeats the same process as before but this time something I wasn¡¯t expecting happened the words that were formed were Eagle blade. Wow, a tier 2 variant class, makes sense he¡¯s always liked heights and one time when we were kids he fell out of a really tall tree and only got a couple of scratched from the fall. I''m happy for him, but now the chances of us going on adventures are slimmer, he¡¯ll probably get scouted by a clan. At least I¡¯ll be able to say my childhood friend was an eagle clan member.
The rest of the awakenings happened like this with a few exceptions like one guy got spell blade a few attributed knights classes, a necromancer, a few healers and priests, some tier 1¡¯s the most surprising ones were an arrogant looking young girl who got hero as her class and a gloomy boy who got seer as his class. But now it¡¯s my turn I¡¯ve finally made my way to the podium.
I¡¯m so nervous. It¡¯s like my legs are made of lead. Each step I take feels like a mile, the silence of the stadium is deafening. I swear I can hear my name being called, looking at the source of the noise I see my parents in the crowd yelling with gusto, with new resolve in step confidently on the stage and give a bow to the father Alex. Looking at him this close I can years of stress and worry etched upon his face but kind blue eyes that seem to contain oceans of knowledge and love, he smiles and beings the awakening.

¡°Huh, an explorer,¡± I couldn¡¯t help but blurt out without thinking almost forgetting where I am, I¡¯ll have to look at these later, but first I should probably get of the stage. i give a polite bow and leave the podium.
After I got off the podium I met up with Baxter and we compared states and skills, he¡¯s so lucky he¡¯s got amazing stats and cool skills most of them are passives but feather fall, light bones and light step sound super useful it basically he''ll eventually be able to run up cliff faces and jump of mountains without getting a scratch I¡¯ve even heard tales of people being able to run in the air aside from those he also got beginner sword mastery compared to his mine seem rather plain.
Once the ceremony was finished father Alex dismissed us and told us we have an hour to come back before the sorting begins. Baxter and me look at each other and sigh, neither of us are looking forwards to this, well most likely get separated, I¡¯ll probably train at the adventurers guild and Baxter will almost defiantly get poached by a big clan somewhere, hopefully their isn¡¯t a representative here today and we get to train together for a while.
We walk out of the long corridor and meet our parents outside for one last time.
It begins
Upon, leaving the Colosseum me and Baxter met up with my parents by the gate. My parents and his dad were looking at us as we approached, pride in their eyes and smiles on their faces. We were both slightly embarrassed this, Baxter whispered, ¡°This is going to be embarrassing.¡± I couldn¡¯t help nodding in agreement, after all, were both only children. It¡¯s probably one of the reasons we get along so well. ¡°I bet your dads feeling really good about your class,¡± I said enviously. ¡°Probably, but your parents too, just look at them it¡¯s clear to see how much they love you.¡±
¡°Hey kiddos!¡± Baxter¡¯s dad calls out to us, extending a hand he gives us both a firm handshake before saying, ¡°You¡¯re men now, this is how men great one another.¡± My dad also gives us each a handshake. My mum however her arms around our shoulder and says, ¡°No matter how old you get you¡¯ll always be those two little boys that always snuck off into the neighbor¡¯s farm to steal apples.¡± ¡°Enough of that, let¡¯s go get some food!¡± my dad chimes in saving us from this mushy situation.
At the restraint, a simple place that gives off a homely feel we tell our parents about our classes. Of course, everybody was interested in Baxter¡¯s. Eagle Blade, a mid tier warrior class, Eagle blades are those gifted with a keen senses suitable for battle and are guides by an eagle totem, at high levels, it is said that people of this call are able to channel the powers of the totem into powerful attacks. My parents were pretty eager to hear the description of my class too but even I can see they are more curious about Baxter¡¯s class. Looking down at my status screen I read out the description of my class.

Explorer
Explorers are those that love adventure, the thrill of traveling and discovering new places, learning about new cultures. Explorers chart out new lands and are destined to travel the globe in search of novelty and riches. The explorer class gives higher bonuses to agility and dexterity as well as some useful non-combat skills.
|
¡°That sounds really cool!¡± Baxter blurts out. ¡°Not really I don¡¯t get any cool abilities like your totem,¡± I say in a depleted voice, staring into my food. Well, its true Baxter is going to be strong he even has a chance of becoming a master warrior but me in contrast. Seeing my current state Baxter says sympathetically, ¡°It¡¯s not like you have to be an explorer you could always join the army and get some combat abilities that way.¡±
Hearing him say this cheers me up a little, he¡¯s right it¡¯s not like I¡¯m restricted to my class like the old days I can pick it¡¯s not like explorer is a bad class I could even become a spy for the country if I wanted. ¡°You¡¯re right, but I¡¯ve heard its difficult levelling a job and a class at the same time.¡± His dad chimes in, ¡°yes it¡¯s not as quick as sticking to your class and you don¡¯t get any abilities at level one either and you only get half the stats from leveling a job.¡± Quickly adding on as to not lower the mood further he says, ¡°But you can have as many jobs as you want and you can get the abilities eventually so you have plenty of opportunities.¡± Even my parents tried to cheer me up, my dad almost shouting with emotion says, ¡°it¡¯s not like you need a class to learn skills or raise your stats, all you need is hard work!¡± They¡¯re all right I should get my head in the game.
Once we were done eating we had to go back to the Colosseum to learn who we''ll be training under and be assigned into groups, but before that we say goodbye to our parents who were practically in tears, especially our dads my mum was oddly calm in comparison not to say that she wasn¡¯t sad but compared to those two she was much more composed. We waved goodbye as the mounted their carts and headed off into the distance.
Once we were back inside the Colosseum with the others, we were greeted by the sight of Dakkar stood at the furthest end of the Colosseum, facing us all 4 of his arms placed behind his back and a mountain of weapons behind him. Subconsciously we¡¯ve formed into neat rows evenly spaced apart, eagerly awaiting his instructions.
Clearing his throat he says, ¡°Good, now I¡¯m sure you all know what¡¯s going to happen now but for those of you who¡¯ve been living under a rock I¡¯ll explain.¡± Picking up a broadsword from the pile, pointing the tip towards us and oppressive energy pushing down on us, some of us even falling to the ground he continues, ¡°for the next week I¡¯m going to training all of you in basic combat techniques before the clans, churches, etcetera etcetera take their pick of you,¡± as though reading the minds of some of us he says, ¡°you might be thinking why do I have to do this I¡¯m only a farmer or as mages you don¡¯t need to get your hands dirty, but your wrong most mages are killed because they can¡¯t defend themselves up close and when war comes farmers are the first to die.¡± Letting his words sink into us he says, ¡°you should all be grateful to have an opportunity to be trained personally by me, if it wasn¡¯t for the king none of you would even be worthy of standing in the same room as me, now come and pick your weapons.¡±This story originates from Royal Road. I can feel my blood pumping as I walk towards the weapons his words reverberating through my head on repeat, especially the part about farmers being the first to die, it really worries me that if a war comes, what would happen to my family? I need to become stronger. Looking at Baxter I can see he has also steeled his resolve, I don¡¯t know what he would do if his father died, he¡¯s the only family he has left.
The commanding voice of Darrak sound out, ¡°one piece of advice choose a weapon that you¡¯re likely to have on hand.¡± After hearing what he said I saw an immediate difference in the others, a couple of them immediately dropped the weapons they were holding and picked up other weapons, if I tried I could probably guess what classes they have, mages with spears, blacksmiths with hammers, farmers with scythes and tridents or at least that¡¯s my guess after all there¡¯s nothing saying a mage cant own a sword. Looking at Baxter I notice he¡¯s chosen a great sword.
It¡¯s almost disconcerting how fast everyone has chosen their weapons as of now there are only three of us still choosing and typical of my luck the other two that are still choosing their weapons are the seer and the hero, I need to choose quickly, I can feel the contempt of the rest for just being here. I can¡¯t rush this decision though, I don¡¯t want to waste this opportunity on a weapon I don¡¯t like and have to start training from scratch. Looking at the various weapons strew about me I decide on a rather plain looking buckler and a short sword, before re-joining the crowd that¡¯s still looking at me with contempt.

Eh, you can get stats for that? Good to know I wonder what other stats are hidden.
Looking back at the two people that haven¡¯t chosen their weapons yet, I see the hero picking up a large greatsword and shield turning towards us as though she isn¡¯t even holding the sword and shield, both almost as large as she is, her auburn hair floating gently in the air, I can¡¯t help but conjure images of her wearing dazzling Armor crushing hordes of bloodthirsty demons.
Taking my eyes off of her I see the seer pick up a thin double-edged sword without a guard and calmly re-join the rest of us I doubt anyone even noticed as all the attention was focused on the hero.
¡°Now that everyone has picked their weapons well begin.¡± Once again lifting his blade pressure pushing down on us Darrak says, ¡°this is the aura of domination, for the next week you¡¯ll all be training your weapons whilst the aura is active, now give me 10 laps!¡± he barks the final order. We all gawk at him, I can¡¯t believe he expects us to do 10 laps especially with this pressure. ¡°Well, what are you waiting for, RUN!¡±
It¡¯s unclear who the first to fall was but during my third lap there were only 20 of us left and I can barely hold on, how were we supposed to do 10 laps? Even without the pressure, it¡¯s too much, as I pass the bodies of my fellow trainee, I think to myself I can barely carry one I can feel my muscles pulsating soon I¡¯m going to be joining them. I notice that it¡¯s not just me who¡¯s struggling Baxter looks beat too, out of all of us the hero looks the least exhausted even with the equipment she¡¯s carrying but even she looks like she¡¯s about to collapse.
Once the last person fell Dakkar said to us ¡°you get 10 minutes to rest then were moving onto weapons practice.¡± Hearing this we all groaned collectively steeling ourselves for the oncoming training session.
