《X-1 Galactic Racing Championship》 Testing TESTING Planet: Suaria Track: Torus Test Track Driver: Kira Duni Car: Super Gipulli Kira followed one of the other cars around the test track for a lap. Getting a feel for the new aero package on the car. The car she was following was a Voss, all in black and super sleek. She had no problem keeping up with the other car in the corners and nearly ran into the back of it in the chicane, but when the track opened up into a straight, the Voss Just disappeared. ¡°How does the car feel in dirty air, Kira?¡± came a voice through her helmet. It was the familiar sound of Rosco, her race engineer. ¡°It¡¯s fine,¡± she said between corners ¡°some understeer on turn in.¡± ¡°Only to be expected when following,¡± said the pit engineer, ¡°We can up the front downforce if we think you will be in traffic.¡± Kira kept driving, the grip in this year¡¯s Super Gipulli was incredible. The designers had come up with a strange eight wheel design and the increase in grip was sensational, she was being pulled from side to side in her seat through the corners and thrust forwards into her harness in the braking zones. ¡°We are running low on fuel, but all other systems appear to be optimal,¡± said Rosco, ¡°can you give us a qualifying lap to finish the stint?¡± ¡°Brilliant!¡± thought Kira, this is what she loves doing the most. A qualifying lap is when you get to push the car to its absolute limit, when a driver has to do the fastest lap time possible. Torus Test track was an easy place to push aswell, the runoff areas were gigantic, you have to crash pretty bad to hit anything out here, so if things went wrong, there was room for error. She drove round the last set of corners of the track, a quick right followed by a long sweeping left, the car snapped back to the right, causing Kira to slide off line and into the runoff. She put the brakes on to slow down gently to half speed, something wasn¡¯t right. She turned the car to the left, then the right, feeling where the tyres were and how the g-force affected the car. ¡°I think something¡¯s gone in the suspension.¡± she said over the radio. ¡°We are seeing, right side, wheel three.¡± ¡°That¡¯s what it feels like.¡± ¡°OK, come into the pits, no point testing with a broken car.¡± ¡°On my way¡± said Kira, she knew the car was damaged, she was already half way into the pit lane. ¡­ It was the last day of testing, it was traditional to get a good lap done, but Kira couldn¡¯t do any more for a good hour or so. The car felt great, it had good grip, downforce and responded like an insect. She just wished it had a bit more power. But there wasn¡¯t much her team could do about that. She left the Super Gipulli pit area and had a bit of a stroll around the back of the pits. Even at a testing session Kira still got the butterflies in her stomach and even after a year at the Super Gipulli X-1 team she couldn¡¯t believe she had made it. X-1 is the biggest racing series in the galaxy. The fastest cars and the fastest drivers on the best tracks. She walked through the paddock passing other teams¡¯ hospitality areas. Tan Gia, K.M.F. and Pegasus, all different teams with different backgrounds and from different cultures. Kira dreamed big though, she loved the Super Gipulli team but every driver wants to be snapped up by the top teams. If she kept driving hard, who knows maybe she could be offered a drive with the leaders, Seskarin or Techno Union. She spotted a driver she knew from last season, wearing all black overalls and chatting with his mechanics, Lucas Beckett. One of the human drivers on the grid, Lucas drove for Voss, a team that was known for cars that were extremely fast in a straight line but a little cumbersome in the corners. ¡°Kira!¡± called Lucas once he spotted her, he then waved at her to come over, so she did. ¡°I saw you following my car in testing today, that thing you are driving is insane, it has some crazy grip.¡± ¡°Yeah, it¡¯s pretty fun to drive, I don¡¯t think we¡¯ve managed to get the most out of it yet though,¡± said Kira, ¡°The Voss looks fast again, the way you just disappear in the straights is just not fair.¡± ¡°Yeah, I guess it is¡± laughed Lucas. Lucas was a dark skinned human and one of the older drivers on the grid, a one time champion too, he was very approachable though, much more than the other champions. ¡°So what brings you over here?¡±If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. ¡°Nothing really,¡± said Kira, ¡°the team is working on the car and I¡¯m just out here enjoying the peace and quiet before the press swarm the paddock.¡± ¡°Good idea,¡± said Lucas with a smile. ¡°I guess you are done testing for a while?¡± asked Kira. ¡°We¡¯re finished, just going through some of the notes now.¡± ¡°I won¡¯t get in your way,¡± said Kira, ¡°I¡¯ll see you at the first race.¡± ¡°See you there,¡± said Lucas, as Kira Duni left to continue her little walk up the paddock. Lucas watched Kira leave, she had a very bouncy step to her walk, with her light brown, scaly tail sweeping from side to side. She was still a young urian and still excited to be racing in X-1. Lucas had been racing for so long now, a lot of the fun had faded. He still loved driving the cars and the thrill of winning was always incredible, but he had lost patience with the press and didn¡¯t have time for it anymore, always answering the same questions over and over again, having every little thing he did scrutinised by every journalist that covered the sport. After much debating internally he had decided to make this his last season in the sport, but this was still secret, even to his team. ... Extracts from testing: Norbert Schweinsteiger (two time champion) - Techno Union This car is fantastic, I can¡¯t wait to get it on track and test it out in a real competition. We have a real chance this year to not only challenge for wins, but this time we¡¯re in with a chance to be able to beat the Seskarins to the title. Sommarrammos looked very comfortable in his car, do you think Seskarin are sandbagging a bit? It¡¯s possible, but we all hold a little something back when we¡¯re testing. There is only a week to go until the first race, what are you going to do until then? It¡¯s quite a long flight to Nkurdamus, so I¡¯ll be doing the usual, just training, doing runs in the simulator. We¡¯re heading there as soon as we wrap up here so I can have some time to acclimatise. Your last championship win was a long time ago, there are some saying that you are past your prime, what do you say to these critics? Really? that was only three seasons ago, I¡¯m just as fast as I ever was. What I say to those critics¡­ did you see last season? I was racing just as hard as anyone, it¡¯s clear the Seskarins had a performance advantage. Nato Criffion - Pegasus Dude, this season is going to be awesome. There are so many teams with fast cars and it looks like we¡¯re one of them. We¡¯ll be fighting for wins this season for sure, not just the odd podium. Our car is so cool to drive, it handles great and it¡¯s really strong on downforce, and the best thing is, we have some power too, so we won''t be just stuck at the back somewhere on the power tracks. I heard HC Boranistipi is doing commentary this year! That¡¯s going to be sweet, he¡¯s my kind of guy. Hashtiget - Cypher Engineering How did testing go for your team? We completed all testing successfully, many operational issues have been resolved. Does that mean some issues have not been resolved, can you tell us what they are? I cannot answer that question. You are racing for a new team this season in Cypher engineering, but you are not the only new team this year. Nillitai is also starting out. Do you see them as your rivals? All the teams are our rivals. Our rival is always the car in front. Your new teammate is running well. What do you think of her? Elizabeth Nightingale is a very talented young human, but she has a lot to learn. So you think you will have the advantage? Yes. Yildamik - XYTRAN The first race is your home race, are you excited to race in front of your fans? Ofcourse, I love my fans. it just lifts the spirits, there is nothing like racing in front of you home fans. They say the cheers of the crowd are worth two seconds a lap *laughs* The XYTRAN did the fewest laps in testing, it looks like there are some underlying reliability problems. It¡¯s possible, but we are fast. I¡¯m sure I can win the first race of the season. It¡¯s meant to be you know what I mean. X-1 Season - Full Entry list Race 1 / 16: Drakrynring - Planet: Nkurdamus Race weekend format: Yesterday we hadour first qualifying session of the year, we have a front row lockout for the XYTRAN team with Yildamik on pole position, Nuvolari in second, Schweinsteiger just behind in third and Karranatos rounding off the front two rows. The race weekend is based on three sessions. The first is the four hour free practice session, each team is permitted to run their cars for as much as they like in this time, gathering setup information and learning the track. The second session is qualifying, this is how the grid order for the race is established. In a one hour session, each driver is given three laps to set the fastest lap they possibly can. They are then in order of lap time on the starting grid. The fastest driver being on pole position, best place for the race ahead. Then there is the race. Each race will be done over a set number of laps (this may vary depending on the length of the track). This is where we see who really is the fastest car-driver combination. Each finishing position offers points that count towards the championship, the driver with the most points wins the driver¡¯s championship, the team with the most points wins the constructors championship. We¡¯re here on Nkurdamus at the Drahrynring. A challenging circuit, filled with fast flowing sections and some pretty tricky braking zones. It¡¯s a really good all round track to start the season off and who knows maybe we¡¯ll get an idea of how the drivers stack up for the rest of the year. I¡¯m Fero Vettin and joining me in the commentary box for this race is popular DJ and part time racing driver, HC Boranistipi. HC: Hey, man how¡¯s it hangin¡¯? Fero: What do you think of this track as a season opener? HC: It¡¯s a groovy place, the Nkurd really know how to put on a party. The atmosphere is great, they have live music on later. It¡¯s going to be awesome! I love the food here too, Nkurd stuff isn¡¯t normally my thing but they do it really nicely here. Fero: And what do you think of the track? HC: it¡¯s cool Fero: ...and there you have it. ¡­ Fero: All the drivers are lined up on the grid, the cars are ready to go, the mechanics are making their way back to the pitlane. HC: I¡¯m getting quite excited, Vettin. Fero: Just to remind you of the qualifying order, it¡¯s Yildamik in the black and gold XYTRAN followed by Santino Nuvolari in the sister car, and behind them, it¡¯s Norbert Schweinsteiger in the silver Techno Union, then Karrannatos in the Voss, just behind the front two rows is Sommarrammos, last season¡¯s reigning champion. These are the ones to look out for at the start. Who¡¯s your pick for the race, HC? HC: I like the look of Issivvinni Fero: in the Nillitai? You think the new team has potential? HC: I have no idea, man, all I know is she looks great in that green and red jump suit. Fero: ¡­ HC: Don¡¯t look at me like that, I¡¯m a simple man and I like what I see. ¡­. Fero: We¡¯re about to go, the lights will come on one by one and when they go out, the race will begin. The lights are coming on¡­ three¡­ four¡­ five¡­ ¡­. And it¡¯s GO! GO! GO! Nuvolari makes a good start and so does Schweinsteiger! It¡¯s a terrible start from Yildamik! He¡¯s losing ground as the other drivers swerve to avoid him! It¡¯s a long run to the first breaking zone and Karranatos has the power to make up the ground he lost at the start. Approaching the first corner he¡¯s almost on top of the leaders. Looking further back there is lots of changing position as everyone tries to avoid the slow starting XYTRAN. HC: Woah crash! Fero: We have two cars off further back, it looks like Hashtiget in the Cypher and one of the Tan Gias. I can¡¯t see the helmet or the number¡­ It¡¯s Ngantfi! Oh no what a shame for the home drivers! It looks like Ngantfi has a puncture so he can still continue, he¡¯ll need to stop and get new tyres. Hashtiget is out of the car and he¡¯s making his way back to the pits on foot. HC: Man, that is just going to ruin his day. Fero: In the other Cypher, Nightingale has made up three places already, she¡¯s up to ninth and is just behind Kuthmananga in the Techno Union. ¡­ Fero: Nuvolari still leads followed by Schweinsteiger, Karrannatos and Sommarrammos Looking back Kira Duni is on a charge, and is chasing down Ji Jin in the KMF. Duni moves out and they go into the double chicane side by side! Duni just manages to out grip the KMF and comes out of the second chicane ahead! The Super Gipulli clearly having an advantage when it come to mechanical grip. HC: Yeah but Ji Jin is coming back on the straight Fero: Yes, Ji Jin is fighting back with the superior power output in the KMF and is going round the outside in the long left hander. They come to the breaking zone it looks like Ji Jin has her, but he locks up! and he¡¯s in the wall! We have their team radio: JIN: She pushed me out wide! did you see that? Pits: Yes we saw it all, we¡¯re reporting it now. HC: Don¡¯t think he¡¯s right there Fero: I agree, there is no way Duni was to blame for that, she was just taking the racing line, he just seemed to outbreak himself. ¡­ Fero: Yildamik has fallen back to tenth place from pole position, let¡¯s listen in. YIL: The car is really hard to drive, the gearbox is messed up. I try to select 4th and it just goes back into 2nd. Pits: Understood, we recommend avoiding 4th gear. YIL: What do you think I¡¯ve been doing? Can we fix it? Pits: Negative, it will be like this to the end. Fero: That must be a very difficult car to drive. Yildamik is earning his paycheck right now. HC: It¡¯s a big paycheck too, have you seen what these drivers earn? Fero: Bannassaton has been chasing him down now for some time and makes his move around the outside of the long left hander and gains the position. ¡­ Fero: Beckett has made progress he¡¯s just powered past Sogdo in the Seskarin. The Voss once again proving to be the best on the straights. HC: Yeah man, that black car is quick. Fero: His third sector times are a bit low, and so are his teammate¡¯s it looks like this year¡¯s Voss has the same cornering issues as the last one. ¡­ Fero: We have a car out of the race! Two cars out of the race! It¡¯s a Green car, one of the Naffa¡¯s and a Techno Union! It¡¯s Kuthmananga! Kuthmananga is out of the Race! Let¡¯s watch the replay and see what happened¡­ Kuthmananga was coming to lap the Boscers, I don¡¯t think he realised just how slow it was going to be going and he just plowed right into the back of it. Launching his car up and over Vissinitipi. Both drivers are out of their cars and are safely over the wall and out of harm¡¯s way. HC: Dude, he does not look happy. Fero: Kuthmananga is furious! He throws down his helmet and looks like he¡¯s going to have it out with Vissinnitipi! He¡¯s got his finger outstretched and is right in the Boscer driver¡¯s face. We don¡¯t have microphones down there and I can¡¯t make out what he¡¯s saying. HC: I¡¯m guessing a lot of swearing, Vettin. ¡­ Fero: Karrannatos has fallen back from the leading group, let¡¯s listen in on the team radio. KAR: Losing power! Losing power! Pits: We can see irregularities in your fuel flow. You may be down on power for the rest of the race. KAR: Dam Pits: stay out there, we still might get a good finish. Fero: it looks like this issue is getting worse, he¡¯s dropping back and the other cars are easily getting past him, Nightingale, Chen, Bannassaton, all manage to get past. HC: Chen has done pretty good, he¡¯s followed Nightingale this whole race. Fero: Yes he¡¯s been taking advantage of all the moves that she has been making sticking to her and making use of the space she leaves behind. ¡­ Fero: We¡¯re looking over the hospitality area now, and at the XYTRAN area. There¡¯s an Nkurd man there with bodyguards and photographers everywhere enjoying a chat with the team principal. HC: Dude, that¡¯s the president of Nkurdamus, he¡¯s like the top dog on this planet. Fero: He must be here to support the local team. HC: Yeah, isn¡¯t there a lot of state backing that goes into this team? Fero: So I¡¯ve heard but we don¡¯t know what the figure is. ¡­ Fero: We have a KMF in the pits for a tyre change, it¡¯s Tleriont. This is going to put him out toward the back of the field. This is a disaster for KMF. Akanau is in the leading KMF in 17th, and that is not a good result for such a big manufacturer. HC: Why are there four KMFs? I¡¯ve never understood that. Fero: KMF has two racing teams entered, the KMF ¡®works¡¯ team who race in their traditional white and blue, and the KMF design team who, as we can see, have a very colourful design, they really stand out a lot. HC: It looks like someone has just tossed some random paint at the car. Fero: Each team build their own cars and the KMF Design team does tend to field younger drivers, who can progress to the main works team. HC: So it¡¯s like a training team? Fero: That¡¯s one way to put it I guess. ¡­ Fero: Kira Duni is making a move of Criffion! Criffion isn¡¯t going to give up without a fight, he moved left to defend, and then right! But Duni Throws a Dummy and slides up the inside on the brakes! That puts Kira Duni up to seventh place, at a track where we didn¡¯t expect the Super Gipulli to be competitive. HC: Yeah! Sweet, I love Super Gipulli Fero: They are always the underdog, they have consistently ran with one of the lowest budgets in X-1 ¡­ Fero: Nuvolari has been leading this race from the start and we¡¯re near the end, but Schweinsteiger is chasing him down, and that¡¯s it we¡¯re on the last lap. Schweinsteiger is right up the back of the XYTRAN it looks like he¡¯s going to make a move going into the double chicane! It¡¯s Nuvolari verses Schweinsteiger into the braking zone! Nuvolari breaks first! Schweinsteiger has overshot and he goes straight over the kerbs launching his car into the air and he lands with a crash! His suspension is broken! that¡¯s the race over for Norbert Schweinsteiger, on the last lap! HC: That¡¯s both of the Techno Union out, they are not going to be happy about this. Fero: Let¡¯s watch a replay of the incident, you can see that Schweinsteiger was forced wide and didn¡¯t get slowed in time. HC: Dude, in the slow mo, you can see he put the breaks on in mid air. Brakes don¡¯t work well if you¡¯re not on the road. ¡­ Fero: Santino Nuvolari crosses the line to win the first race of the season for XYTRAN, followed closely by Sommarrammos in the Seskarin and Lucas Beckett in the Voss, a strong result for him after a poor qualifying. And Nightingale comes in fourth place with Benjamin Chen just behind for Ultracar. ¡­ Fero: So this leaves Sommarrammos in prime position to launch his title defence and perhaps get championship number five. The XYTRAN is very fast this season though, even if it might be a bit unreliable as we saw with Yildamik at the start of the race. Who¡¯s your driver of the day, HC? HC: Kira Duni, for sure, she started way back and finished off in Seventh! And in the Super Gipulli too. Fero: Don¡¯t forget Nightingale, she also climbed the ranks to finish just off the podium, very promising from the young driver. HC: Yeah, she did awesome. ¡­ Fero: Join us next time when we¡¯ll be going to the Black Forest run on Saturan. The galactic union is a union of six sentient species throughout the galaxy. All united through a common mindset and common set of ideals, and ofcourse, a common need for oxygen. The Galactic union is was created to unite the six different races of the galaxy and to prevent conflict. As we have similar environmental and dietary requirements, this was considered to be a vital union in order to prevent possible conflict in the future. As you may be unfamiliar with the other residents of the galaxy, we will introduce them briefly for you here. Urian: Urians are a reptilian species from the planet of Saturan. They are commonly found to have light brown scaly skin although other colours are not unheard of. They¡¯re evolutionary roots go back to Lizards and this can be seen in the shape of their heads and indeed, their cool blood. Compared to humans they have a low tolerance for cold, an adventurous outlook on life and a very keen sense of smell. The Urians racing in X-1 are: Elli Nas Sogdo, Nihlus des Amanai, Nato Criffion, Tumus Des Akanau, Kira Duni and Nizio Faust. Human: Humans come from the planet known as Gaia, some may still call the planet by it¡¯s old name, but this is from before the humans joined the Galactic Union. Humans descend from apes and this is evident by their unpredictable and diverse nature. They come in various different shapes and sizes, not to mention pigmentations. They have fleshy skin and will often sport decorative crests of fur or ¡°hair¡± atop their heads. The Humans racing in X-1 are: Norbert Schweinsteiger, Santino Nuvolari, Benjamin Chen, Lucas Beckett, Ji Jin, Kasih Darma, Elizabeth Nightingale, Mikah Elinas and Hans Burg. Huraki: The Huraki hail from the planet, Eretamustipi, and were the first species in the Galactic Union to travel the stars. The Huraki have evolutionary roots in amphibian kind, but they are not amphibious themselves. They have smooth white or grey skin and share many features with humans, apart from their lack of external facial features such as outer ears or a protruding nose, instead having ear holes and nasal slits respectively. They are a very calm and could be considered to be the most diplomatically minded of all the races, however all individuals are different so this may not always be the case. As a human you may have come across Huraki names and found them rather long daunting. The Huraki racing in X-1 are: Sommarrammos, Karranatos, Bannassaton, Issivvinni, Vissinnitipi and Illirriya Nkurd: The Nkurd are a four armed species hailing from Nkurdamus. The Nkurd are shorter than the average human normally standing up a human¡¯s shoulder. Nkurd have black and white patchy skin and a long predatory head with many sharp teeth. The Nkurd have an evolutionary history unique to its planet and cannot be equated to a human or Gaia equivalent. In mentality Nkurd are similar to the other races, but can be known to have quick reflexes and a short attention span; perhaps it is this coupled with their extra pair of arms that make them such formidable racers. Nkurd are known to have complex names that are hard to pronounce, but do not despair human, the other races find them challenging as well. Indeed our commentator for X-1 Fero Vettin has been seen rehearsing the pronunciation of some Nkurd names many times. Nkurd drivers that race in X-1 are: Kuthmananga, Yildamik, Tleriont, Thleshton, Hashtiget, Ngantfi and Aflkin Oiyan: Commonly referred to as the people of Oiya are an aquatic species. They can survive on land but due to their slender frames struggle to survive in a high gravity environment. Compared to humans, they are very tall with long necks and large eyes; perhaps to help see in the depths of their oceans. Oiyans are a very peaceful species and would seldom ever resort to violence. Oiyans can integrate into the wider Galactic society, but due to their lack of resistance to forces such as X-1 levels of G-force, there are no X-1 pilots of this species, however, the X-1 team, Tan Gia is operated and owned by Oiyans Pala: The Pala are a large, heavy set race from the planet Niith. Pala when standing are not much taller than a human, however are three times the weight and many times the strength. They stand hunched over and have thick grey, brown or green skin. Their home planet is very oxygen rich which has allowed them to grow large. Without correct acclimatisation, Pala may require artificial breathing assistance on some other worlds. The oxygen rich environment of their ancestry has also left imprinted on each of them a strong sense of fear and caution when regarding fire and potential ignition. Pala do not race in X-1, due to them being too large and heavy to be competitive. However there are many Pala in other roles within teams. ... X-1 is one of the many sports and events that is played on a galactic level, these events unite us and keep us together with a shared sense of fair competition. The X-1 driver, Yildamik put it best: ¡°We¡¯re all a part of this galaxy and we need to spread more love to one another. I¡¯ve been all around the galaxy and everywhere I go there are fans, no matter what species, beliefs or whatever... X-1 is something that unites us all.¡± Race 2 / 16: Black Forest Run - Planet: Saturan Race 1 Debreif with X.Y.T.R.A.N. Santino Nuvolari: That was a tough race, I know it looks like I just lead from the front but Norbert was chasing me down for the whole race. I was under pressure the whole time. I just needed to keep my head down and keep my cool. We have a really quick car this year, so I can really trust in it¡¯s strengths. Your teammate suffered from mechanical problems throughout the race, is that something that concerns you going forwards? Ofcourse it is. We have a new designer in the team this year and his philosophy seems to be simply, lose weight wherever possible. We might be a bit too light on some things. It¡¯s no secret that we¡¯ve been struggling for reliability, we did half the laps of the other teams in testing, but the team have really pulled things around and we got two cars to the finish. The XYTRAN is really quick this season do you think you have a shot at the title? If we can solve our little reliability issues, then yes, we have the speed to go all the way. Yildamik: Do you know what happened to the car? Yes, it was a gearbox failure, there was an issue with fourth gear, and basically I couldn¡¯t use it. We all saw you in qualifying, you have some really good one lap pace. I try to have good pace all the time. If you don¡¯t drive at your maximum one hundred percent of the time, you are no longer a racing driver. Is that not a dangerous way to drive? It¡¯s the fastest way to drive, that¡¯s all that matters. And I have someone watching over me. (he points to the sky) I don¡¯t fear speed. Team Profile: X.Y.T.R.A.N. Colours: Black and gold X.Y.T.R.A.N. is a team from the city of Nfulft on Nkurdamus. The letters stand for Xylthint Yfkntra Tor Rokkshin Ashntirus Nfulft which basically means Racing Design and Engineering from Nfulft. They are the most successful racing outfit from Nkurdamus and have had limited success in other racing series like endurance racing and the anti-gravity championships, no to mention a presence in the junior series of X-2 and X-3. X-1 however is their biggest operation and their biggest earner, making money from prize money, sponsorship deals and grants from the Nkurd government. Their cars are generally considered to be very fast and it is rare that they will not be able to win a race in a season of X-1, however they have been known to lack the reliability of some of the other top teams. Drivers: Santino Nuvolari (Human): Santino Nuvolari may not be an Nkurd driver but he is a great fit for the team and has been with them for three seasons now. He¡¯s known as a great talent with a preference for wet tracks. When it rains, Santino comes alive and can be unstoppable. Santino had a brief stint with the Seskarin racing team however he lost his drive due to his conduct with the press. He had a bit of a habit of sharing too much information publicly regarding the inner workings of the team. X.Y.T.R.A.N. is not a team that concerns itself with absolute secrecy and find that his open style is beneficial at times. Yildamik (Nkurd): Yildamik is a young driver and is in his second year with the heam. He has progressed through the ranks of the X.Y.T.R.A.N. young drivers program, going through X-3 and X-2 winning those championships by a long way. X-1 is a whole different monster though, the cars are much faster and the stakes are way higher. Yildamik prefers to race at full speed all the time, which may not be the best policy in a car that was designed with very low tolerances. On his day though, he can be untouchable, He gives the credit for his speed to the gods, and has been seen praying before and after races. Race 2 (Black Forest Run) Preview: Kuthmananga (Techno Union): I like this track, it¡¯s not the kind of place that lets you rest for one second. It¡¯s a great blend of tight and medium corners, without any long straights. Even the start - finish straight isn¡¯t really all that straight. What¡¯s the most challenging part of the track? The climate, the track is in a rainforest and it¡¯s really warm and humid. It¡¯s quite weird to drive a racing car on a semi temporary road winding through the trees; and then there is the rain. Every day in the afternoon, there is the heaviest rain I have ever seen on this track. It¡¯s not too much of a problem for most of us, but it just comes out of nowhere. You had an incident in the last race with Vissinnitipi, have you spoken to her about that? Yeah, I spoke to her straight after she took me out, I said that she should stay out of the way of faster drivers. What if you were to meet her again in the coming race? As long as it¡¯s not on track, I don¡¯t care. Kira Duni (Super Gipulli): This is your home race, are you looking forward to it? Ofcourse, my family is going to be there and I don¡¯t want to let them down. The fans on Saturan are always great, the support Nato and myself get is incredible. Last year¡¯s race here didn¡¯t end well, are you hoping to improve this time around? Yeah, obviously, I don¡¯t want to crash out again. (laughs) I don¡¯t really like the track layout that much though to be honest, but I¡¯ll do my best to keep it out of the wall.

Race 2: Black Forest Run - Planet: Saturan

Fero: Hello and Welcome to race two of sixteen of this X-1 season. We¡¯re here on Saturan, the home planet for the Urians, including myself. The semi permanent track winds its way through the trees and clearings of the natural environment to create a very flowing and natural sequence of corners. I¡¯m Fero Vettin and I am joined in the commentary box by popular DJ and part time racing driver, HC Boranistipi. What do you think of this track, HC? HC: It¡¯s so humid here and there are bugs everywhere! But I can¡¯t complain too much, my hotel room is awesome. Fero: Yes, it is very humid in the forest, and it¡¯s possible the weather may play a big part in the race, we have a very wet tropical climate in this part of the planet. HC: You mentioned that this track was semi permanent, do they fold it up and hide it away after the race? Fero: The track is build on a raised structure, so it doesn¡¯t actually touch the forest floor. The plan is that in about twenty years or so, the track can be removed and the forest will reclaim the land. HC: It¡¯s raised? You mean you could crawl under it? Fero: Yes, if you were a little forest critter. HC: Nice. ¡­ Fero: We had qualifying yesterday and Yildamik was once again the star performer, coming out in pole position and again by quite a large margin. Alongside him for this race, we have Kuthmananga and Nato Criffion in the Pegasus taking third place, and Sommarramos the four time champion in the fourth grid slot. Full Qualifying Results:

HC: Dude look at the Vosses, they are way down at the back of the grid, how did that happen? They were really good in the last race. Fero: It¡¯s all down to the type of track. Corners have never been Voss¡¯s strong point. Even the best driver can¡¯t overcome a car¡¯s weaknesses. ¡­ Fero: The Cars are sitting on the grid and getting ready for the off, let¡¯s listen in on Criffion¡¯s team radio.Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. CRI: I¡¯m ready for this guys, let¡¯s do it! Pits: OK, all systems are looking normal, you did a good job in qualifying yesterday, let¡¯s not throw it away. You¡¯re around a lot of fast cars, let¡¯s not do anything stupid. CRI: Ha ha! Don¡¯t worry dude, it¡¯s fine, your car is in safe hands. Pits: Let¡¯s try to keep this position, we can get a podium here. Fero: The Pegasus team are clearly concerned that Nato Criffion, might be a little reckless, we can only hope that he doesn¡¯t put it in the wall in his home race. HC: Nah, man Nato¡¯s a cool dude, dude. He won¡¯t break under the pressure. ¡­ Fero: The lights are coming on and we¡¯re off! Yildamik makes a great start, Kuthmananga is a little slow off the line, and Sommarrammos makes a fantastic start, he beats Criffion and moves along side Kuthmananga into the first corner! Kuthmananga is slightly ahead and just about wins out by going round the outside into the first corner. Sogdo has made a terrible start and drops two places and just about stays ahead of Schweinsteiger going into the first corner. HC: Is that an Ultracar behind Norbert? Fero: Yes, that¡¯s Benjamin Chen up into ninth place, getting in front of Kira Duni for the first time. ¡­ Fero: If we watch the replay, that¡¯s actually quite an amazing start from Chen, you can see that he has the perfect amount of wheelspin and just weaves his way past the other cars. Before the first corner he¡¯s already made his way past Amanai, Issivvinni and Bannassaton; going round the outside of the long first corner, he manages to sweep around Darna and Duni. HC: Not bad for the kid in glasses. ¡­ Fero: Beckett is in the wall! it looks like he just under steered straight into it on corner exit. HC: He hit pretty hard, he bashed his front wheel off, Vettin BEC: Sorry guys, it¡¯s all over. Pits: Understood, can you make it back. BEC: I¡¯m on three wheels but I should be able to make it ¡­ Fero: Yildamik has been pushing hard, the distance he¡¯s putting between himself and second place is getting bigger every lap. He¡¯s starting to look pretty lonely out there. Meanwhile further back Sommarrammos is chasing down Kuthmananga, but the Techno Union driver is not slipping into any mistakes. The four time champion is clearly the faster driver but Kuthmananga is just not leaving any space at all in the corners. This can be a challenging place to overtake and he is not making it any easier. Sommarrammos is not making any silly moves though, he¡¯s playing it cool and waiting for Kuthmananga to blink first. HC: Yildamik has binned it! Fero: Yes! Yildamik, our race leader has hit the wall! It doesn¡¯t look like the race is over for him, but he¡¯ll need to head into the pits to get the front spoiler replaced, it¡¯s been totally ripped off. Let¡¯s watch the replay. It looks like he just locks up and slides into the wall. HC: Can we hear the team radio for that crash? Pits: OK, we are twenty seconds ahead of the cars behind, we need to bring in the pace and control to the end¡­. YIL: Woah! No! Pits: what happened? YIL: You distracted me, man, I hit the wall! Pits:... ok we see the damage come into the pits and we¡¯ll fix it up. YIL: You need to stop talking to me when I¡¯m driving. Fero: This is going to put Yildamik way back into the traffic of the race, he could be as far back as eleventh. ¡­ Fero: Nightingale has dropped back, she¡¯s in last place. It looks like she got a bit too close with one of the Naffas and clipped a part of her bodywork. This would have ruined her aerodynamics on her car. HC: They should bring her into the pits and get it fixed. Fero: Maybe they think it¡¯s not going to be that bad, but you can see how much she¡¯s struggling out there with grip. ¡­ Fero: Last race Kira Duni was the star driver for Super Gipulli but it¡¯s her teammate who is shining here. Aflkin is running well in fifth, and following very closely behind Santino Nuvolari in the XYTRAN. HC: He¡¯s pretty close Fero: Yes, Aflkin is right up the back of the XYTRAN, filling Nuvolari¡¯s mirrors with the purple Super Gipulli. And Nuvolari is not getting away! Aflkin is darting from left to right, harassing Nuvolari into a mistake. They go into the long left hander heading into the tightest sector of the track. This is where the Super Gipulli has been the most effective. Aflkin goes left, he goes right, but Nuvolari has him covered. The aggressive defending has put him off line, and Aflkin out grips him and drives up the inside of the next corner. HC: Woah, good move! Fero: Excellent driving, this leaves him in fourth place! He¡¯s a long way back from Criffion in third, so it will be unlikely for him to catch up. ¡­ Fero: We have a wreck in sector one, It¡¯s a Techno Union! HC: I recognise that helmet, it¡¯s Norbert again, he¡¯s binned it. Fero: Norbert Schweinsteiger has hit the wall, let¡¯s watch the replay and see what happened. It looks like He was tangling with Amanai in the Ultracar, he was going wheel to wheel and trying to go round the outside into the first corner, but he just ran out of space. HC: How did Amanai get away from that without any damage. Fero: Schweinsteiger was giving the Ultracar room, as is the correct thing to do, but Nihlus Amanai didn¡¯t return the favour. AMA: I was on the racing line, you saw that right! Pits: Yes, we saw everything, you weren''t in the wrong. AMA: Is he OK? Pits: Yes he¡¯s fine, he¡¯s out of the car now. .... Fero: It¡¯s started to rain at the far end of the track, in sector two, you can see the spray being kicked up by the cars there. HC: Weird localised weather. Fero: I¡¯m sure it will cover the track at some point, but the race is entering it¡¯s closing stages, it might not cover the whole¡­ And we have an off! Two cars are off in Sector two going into the right hander. It¡¯s a Naffa and a KMF. That¡¯s Hans Burg and Tleriont. Tleriont was struggling in the conditions on this part of the track and Hans Burg was attempting an overtake. The closing speed was just too much and Tleriont didn¡¯t see him coming. HC: Ouch, that looked like a big hit. Fero: Yes, but both drivers appear to be fine and are out of their cars. What a shame to end the race so close to the end like this. ¡­ Fero: Our Leaders, Kuthmananga and Sommarrammos and heading into sector two, Kuthmananga is really struggling in the wet conditions. HC: Shouldn¡¯t they go into the pits to get wet tyres? Fero: It¡¯s still only Sector two that¡¯s wet and we¡¯re getting too close to the end to stop for tyres now. The drivers just need to take it carefully. They drive past the wrecks of the Naffa and the KMF which have now been lifted from the track. HC: It looks weird, they have just left those racing cars on the forest floor. Fero: Kuthmananga slips! he¡¯s slid wide in the right-left chicane and this is all Sommarrammos needs, he finds grip through the water and he¡¯s got it! Sommarrammos is in the lead of the race! HC: I don¡¯t think he¡¯ll make the same mistake as Kuthmananga, looks like he¡¯s going on to win. ¡­ Fero: Benjamin Chen has just made it up to sixth place behind Nuvolari, What a drive he¡¯s had this race. HC: Yeah, and the other Ultracar hasn¡¯t done badly either. Fero: Amanai is only a few places back and having a strong showing. HC: I guess this makes up for their bad qualifying performance. ¡­ Fero: And Sommarrammoa crosses the line to win at the Black Forest Run! He¡¯s opened up a big gap to the car behind already and here comes Kuthmananga now to claim second place. HC: Wow, they were a long way ahead, Criffion is only coming up to the finish now. Fero:Criffion crosses the line in third place, and only a few seconds behind, Aflkin claims fourth place! ... Fero: So Sommarrammos has set the groundwork for his title defence and after the first wo races he¡¯s already in the lead of the championship. But Nuvolari is in second place and only five points behind. HC: Dude, Nato is in third place, but he¡¯s a long way back. Fero: It¡¯s only early days in the season so far, Don¡¯t forget that Norbert Schweinsteiger hasn¡¯t got his championship started yet. HC: Haha, yeah, you¡¯re right, he¡¯s at the bottom with nothing. Fero: We are off to Block 57-18 on the planet Niith for the next race, a very unusual track inside a building and covering three floors. HC: That sounds fun, Vettin. What is an X-1 Car

X-1 is a high performance racing series for prototype, single user ground vehicles. X-1 is in the category of Wheel driven motorsport that would be considered the most popular among the people of the Galactic Union. Where as anti-gravity and Space based motorsport is popular, it does not have the same draw as wheeled vehicles. Wheels have the appeal of being unpredictable, adding a layer of strategy to the sport, (in terms of tyres) and the appeal of being the most commonly available and most accessible form of private mobility. Whereas anti gravity vehicles are available, they are still out of reach financially for many of the people of the galactic union; so naturally a wheels and tyres motorsport is appealing. Performance Each team makes its own cars to enter the championship and both cars made by that team must be more or less identical, allowing for some changes to the cockpit shape to allow for the different species¡¯ body shapes. Each team has to work to a set of technical specifications to make sure the cars are legal and no team has any significant advantage. Each X-1 car has the performance on the straights and through the corners to pull a significant level of G-force, so much so that it requires a high level of fitness to drive one of these cars for a full race distance. This performance is not created by any sort of electromagnetism or gyrostabalisation, just simple aerodynamic downforce and high performance racing tyres keeping them stuck to the road. One of the key draws of X-1 is the diversity of the machines. There is the super sleek and slim Voss racing car that has been designed to go as fast as possible down the straights and there is the bizarre eight wheeled creation that has been made by the super Gipulli team. This diversity of cars had no doubt arisen from the diversity of the locations the cars have to race in, from super tight street tracks including a track that covers three floors of an interior location. and some long tracks that test a car¡¯s outright top speed, Such as the Navras Speedway where one would seldom have to press the brakes at all. If a team creates an all rounder in terms of performance, it may be difficult to fight for wins at the top level, but if the car is made focussed on a more specific area of performance there is a chance they can fight for wins on a few occasions. It¡¯s generally a question of what the teams budget will allow them to develop and the requirements of sponsors.Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon. Safety An X-1 car is incredibly safe. It is said that the safest place to be at an X-1 race, is in an X-1 car. Each car is built with a driver safety cell complete with canopy. Each car will need to pass a series of crash tests before they are allowed to enter the car into any races. Safety is the biggest concern for the race directors and on occasion a car will not be allowed to compete after qualifying if their performance is deemed to be too poor and the closing speeds between them and the leading cars would be too great. Despite all the precautions that are in place, due to the massive speeds involved, injuries and even fatalities can be unavoidable in some circumstances. Budget and transportation So how does a team manage to afford to develop a car and do all of this racing around the galaxy? Well the truth is, it¡¯s very expensive very few companies can afford to fit an X-1 budget into their business plan. The teams that are involved are either run by incredibly rich business owners as passion project like Boscer Yent or Super Gipulli or are tied to a large car auto company like K.M.F. or Ultracar. Even with the wealthy backing of the team owners, these cars will need sponsorship in order to afford to race. The process of going to each race is a very large operation and each team has a large space ship that is fully equipped to house and facilitate the entire team. Each team¡¯s ship has the facilities to work on the cars, house the personnelle and train the personnelle; both with simulations and full gymnasium and sports facilities. The largest of these ships is ofcourse the K.M.F. ship, however this is due to the fact that they transport the personnelle for two racing teams. The extreme budget required by X-1 does mean that while some teams flourish, some teams are fighting to survive. Some teams have taken to hiring drivers based on their lucrative sponsorship ties rather than their performance on track. This can be seen most evidently with the team, Boscer Yent. Boscer Yent relies on sponsorship to keep racing and it sees moments like their home race on Niith as the best opportunity to attract sponsorship.
