《The Dungeon of Grey》 Chapter 0 - A wonderful way to wake up Chapter 0 - A wonderful way to wake up Edited by: Myself
Well this is a rather disconcerting way to wake up isn¡¯t it? I¡¯m sure that many people would agree with me I am currently in a pitch black void after all, nothing says disconcerting like an endless abyss ready to swallow me whole, does it? Although it seems it¡¯s not exactly an empty void after all, I am in fact surrounded by tens of star-like lights¡ to be honest i''m not sure how I missed them earlier. Upon closer inspection it seems that each of the stars (I¡¯m going to call them that for now) are of different colours, some with only slight hues of difference, almost as if someone decided to turn the night sky into skittles. ¡°Settle down young ones.¡± Suddenly a voice echoes through the space, reverberating like a gong and with a firm power to it. This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source. ¡°I am sure many of you are confused and currently experiencing all sorts of forms of shock but quite frankly that doesn¡¯t matter right now.¡± How rude disregarding our feelings like that, although to be fair I don¡¯t appear to be particularly fussed considering I can casually comment like this. ¡°For now I will simply begin with the pleasantries, Congratulations, the 100 of you here have been selected to obtain the privilege of reincarnating in another world and gaining a second chance at life due to your¡ uniqueness. We will have the 100 of you become dungeon cores of a type based upon your personalities, beliefs, dreams and the lives you lived. You will then proceed to enrich the world through a multitude of methods depending on your type.¡± So firstly I¡¯m dead, secondly I¡¯m being forcefully recruited to do a job I know nothing about, thirdly I¡¯m not getting paid. Truly, a wonderful way to wake up in the morning. ¡°Hmm¡ For now I will begin with explaining what exactly is going on, the 100 of you all have a distinct uniqueness to you that separates you from others, put nicely your special, put badly your weirdos. We have classified your individual specialness as a colour and assigned it to you and as such you will live with the mark of your colour. This will be significant as we will be reincarnating all of you into the same thing, a dungeon core.¡± So i''m going to become a floating crystal¡ Well it could have been worse. ¡°The details of how you live as a dungeon core will be explained to you once you arrive in your new world, Tandus. I will send you there in a moment, know that I shall gather you all together 1 year from now assuming you still live.¡± Wait what¡ That''s seriously it? That''s all?! Don¡¯t you have a better explanation than that Mr. Echoing Voice?! No tips, advice, anything at all?! ¡°May fortune be with you, the 100 chromatic dungeon cores!¡± And with the boom of his voice my consciousness grew heavy, like sinking into a swamp, and everything went black. Chapter 1.1 - Dungeon Sight Chapter 1.1 - Dungeon Sight Edited by: Myself
When I came too I was once again in an empty world, or at least it seemed that way. I could vaguely feel something faint surrounding me on all sides, key word being that I could feel. This implies I now have a body of sorts so I guess I should try to identify what and where I am.

Greetings Dungeon Core #50, the tutorial is soon to commence and it is recommended you wait till it begins before performing actions in order to avoid fatal accidents.
Could whatever makes this blue box please give a warning next time? My non-existent heart almost had a figurative heart attack.

Comment Noted, your suggestion will be forwarded to the appropriate being at a later date.
Oh so it responds to user input? Nice. Well for now judging by the warning about potential "fatal accidents" I should probably just sit back and relax for a while... Speaking of which how long till the tutorial starts?
System Alert
There is 00:00:25 units of time left till the tutorial begins.
Well I guess i''m going to just idle for 25 seconds then... 20... 15... 10.. 5... 0!
System Alert
The tutorial shall now commence!
So whats first?
Tutorial 1: Dungeon Sight
In order to adapt into life as a dungeon core you first need to learn how to use your five senses as one, this can be done through the skill known as dungeon sight and it is an essential part of life as a dungeon core. In order to unlock the dungeon sight skill attempt to concentrate on your surroundings.
So i''ve just got to concentrate? Well then for now I guess i''ll concentrate on that "feeling" I was getting earlier. It feels slippery and... liquidy? Almost like a goo, quite frankly i''m not sure what it is at all. But I continue to concentrate on it, to feel it, to perceive it, and everything begins to become clearer. The goo like feeling gradually began to clear up becoming clearer and less murky, almost like it was being purified, and with it I began to form the first vestiges of sight... Only to find myself in the middle of an open field. The sky was a clear blue with naught a cloud in sight, the suns radiance bore down on the grasslands covering my view in such a way that it seemes rather beautiful, although not enough to emotionally move me or anything; T''Was just a field of grass after all.The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation. I then moved on to looking at myself and was woefully dissapointed, what appeared to be my body was a perfectly spherical orb coloured a dull grey, it had a diameter of 6 cm''s and could be easily held in the hand or stored in a pocket. The orb was lodged into the top of a grey pillar about 50 cm''s in height and although I call it a pillar it was more like a block of stone with an indent at the top for the orb to fit into, all in all i was completely unremarkable in any way. To say I was not satisfied would be an under statement and so I decided to go above and beyond what the tutorial required of me- I concentrated even harder than before, attempting to grasp at any sort of invisible force that might be in the surroundings. I searched, I searched more, I searched even more. Time seemed to fly as I scoured through every blade of grass, through every chunk of dirt, through the sun''s rays themselves until I finally turned the search towards myself and perceived something. I wasn''t quite sure what this something was but I sure as hell wasn''t going to pass up the chance that''s turned my way and so I concentrated harder that I ever have before, and eventually my efforts were rewarded. The world seemed to light up in a cresendo of colour, a formless energy flowed through everything, strangely it was all colour coded I saw blues, reds, browns, yellows, whites, and finally a blackish colour. All this colour in itself would be amazing but I saw that all this energy flowed through a single point in the lands, almost like a central hub or maybe a river crossing? It was my previously unremarkable core, my core which from my eyes now had a rainbow-like aura surrounding it.

...Well thats a lot of rewards. Chapter 1.2 - Overachiever Chapter 1.2 - Overachiever Edited by: Myself
Well then what''s next on the agenda blue boxes?
Tutorial 2: Expansion
Now that you have learned to see it is time for you to learn how to grow your territory, this would normally be an instinctual process for most dungeons and as such relatively easy but due to your skill Dungeon Sight: Mana it is possible for you to take a more manual and detailed approach to it if you so wish. In order to expand your dungeon territory merely push outwards.
What does it mean "push outwards" how is that a helpful explanation in any way?! I''m an orb?! How do I "push outwards"?! HaaaaII guess i should just try then? After all complainings not going to fix the problem, although it will certainly make me feel better... Actually now that I check I faintly feel a... something... in my core and after attempting to push it out like the alert said it sort of feels like the space a meter or so around me became part of my "body" per say...wait that''s it? Actually now that I think about it to learn to see all i had to do was concentrate, the only reason it was so intensive is becuase I made it that way and I gained extra rewards as a result. So I guess I should try to do something like that again but with the weird thing in my core huh? Concentrating on my core again I began to inspect what I grasped earlier and find that its some sort of liquidy slime-like substance... almost like the feeling I got when I first concentrated on sight. Feeling an epiphany coming on I attempt to move around the substance inside my core, like molding dough with my metaphorical hands, and find it strangely malleable with the strange part being that it almost seems... alive, it responds to my actions and follows along with my will, its kind of like water flowing down a river in a way. After having done all this I guess I can safely say that this liquidy substance is "mana", the very same one I gained the ability to see earlier. I suppose that means that "expanding my territory" is pushing mana out of my core and having it settle in the surroundings or something along those lines? In fact I can see that in the space I claimed as territory the mana appears to both be richer in quality (the light is brighter so I assume thats the case) and more common as well, almost like i''m enriching it with my very presence.
Tutorial Alert
Congratulations Dungeon Core #50! You have Completed Tutorial 2: Expansion and have gone above and beyond the required results! You have not only learned how to expand your own territory but you have also gained a concrete understanding of how this process, an initial idea of how to manipulate mana and you have even begun to grasp at the reasons for the existence of dungeons themselves! Due to this you will receive greatly increased rewards and have managed to attract the attention of the Gods!

My extra effort has payed off it seems although I don''t like that sound of "attracted the attention of the Gods", if theres one thing the myths and legends of earth has taught me its that getting involved with Gods almost never ends well. Not like I can do anything about it though, i''m technically already involved due to the reincarnation and all that. Also i''m just going to ignore the thing about being an overachiever, as far as i''m concerned overachieving is a good thing when your life depends on it. Anyway getting back to the important things whats next Ol''Blue Box?
Tutorial 3: Know Thyself
Now that you understand how to use your senses and how to expand your territory it is time to learn more about yourself as all tutorials past this point will be influenced by what type of dungeon you are. In order to see information about your self merely utter ''Status'' internally while wishing to see your status screen (saying it externally also works but you have no vocal cords so do it internally).
Nice, so I guess I just say ''Status'' then?

So to begin with I guess I should try to get an understanding of what everything in my status screen means/represents even though its mostly self-explanatory. Although just relying on my own bias could potentially get me killed here so i''m just going to ask the blue boxes for an explanation, take it away blue boxes!

Dungeon Name: The name of your dungeon E.g. The Plains of Grass, The Singular Pillar, The Useless Hovel Dungeon Level: A rough indication of your total level of strength, age and experiences as a dungeon. In order to gain more levels you must expand your dungeon, kill invaders and complete Divine Quests. Dungeon Titles: Titles given to a dungeon based upon their actions, reputation and personality. They give various benefits to the dungeon. Dungeon Floors: The number of floors contained within your dungeon. Core Health(HP): The health of your dungeon core, if this reaches 0 you die. Health Regen: The rate at which HP regenerates. Mana(MP): The total amount of mana stored inside your dungeon, can be used to expand your territory and manipulate the terrain inside of it. Mana Regen: The rate at which ambient mana is gathered into your territory. Dungeon Points: Used for the unlocking and upgrading of dungeon features and traits, 10 points are given by default to all new dungeons. Dungeon Skills: Numerical indicators of your abilities which provide buffs to actions related to their names. Example - Focus makes it easier to achieve high levels of focus and makes said focus more efficient. Dungeon Traits: Traits of your dungeon normally obtained through DP or titles, the effects of these traits can range from purely beneficial to trade offs between a positive and a negative. They are some of the most effective ways to improve a dungeon and are characteristic of the dungeon''s personality and habits. Dungeon Elemental Affinity: A measure of how attuned to each primary element you are, highest level of attunement is 200% (extremely attuned and extremely unlikely).
Well thats helpful. As expected a lot of it was self explanatory like HP and MP however its good to know what exactly traits and affinity were as they could have had a multitude of meanings, also is Dungeon Name making fun of me or something? All of those can relate to me and sound insulting. The effects of my skills seem pretty self explanatory and the traits explain what they do on the page so I suppose that means only the titles are left, is it possible to find out their effect Bl- actually i should probably come up with a better name than blue boxes shouldn''t I? For now i''ll refer to them as... uh... I honestly can''t think of anything, all that comes to mind are names like "Info" and "Blue". I give up, from now on I shall refer to the boxes as Francine because I can not think of anything better! Now Francine tell me the title effects.

Wow the Chromatic Dungeon and Dungeon of Grey achievements are really good, Overachiever also helps but not as much. With that I understand what''s going on now. Well then Francine can we move onto the next tutorial?
Tutorial Alert
Congratulations Dungeon Core #50! You have completed Tutorial 3: Know Thyself and have learned how to view your own status, that is this tutorials reward so you will not receive another one.
No reward? How cheap.
Tutorial 4: Creation
Now that you know information about yourself it''s time for your final challenge creating your dungeon itself. As a dungeon you have the instinctual ability to turn matter into mana and vice versa however it is only possible to turn mana into matter which you have previously absorbed. The knowledge on how to do this will be instinctual to you and so it is your job to figure out how to do it.
Final challenge huh? Well then I should probably start with the normal routine of concentrating on stuff till it works. So for now i''m going to concentrate on some of the dirt surrounding me and upon doing so I notice that it is very... dirt-like. It''s completely ordinary dirt. However on closer inspection I notice that what constitutes an ordinary piece of dirt here is different to back on earth, for starters I can see the mana flowing through it and im going to guess that it has some sort of relation to turning the matter into mana so im going to concentrate on that for now. It seems like the mana is almost tied together, kind of like strings or a ribbon so maybe of I pull at the metaphorical ribbon it will turn into mana? Not like I have any other ideas on what to do... although how do I tug at the strings? Well maybe the answer lies in my skills? If I recall correctly I got the mana manipulation skill from messing with the mana in my core so I guess I should try doing the same thing as then, mould dough with metaphorical hands, and surprisingly it works albeit ineffciently after all I am trying to mold strings as if they were dough. After a long amount of prodding and pulling with my imaginary limbs I finally manage to untangle the strings and suddenly as if it was never there a small amount of dirt dissapears like it was never there.
System Alert
Dungeon Skill Analyze has leveled up to level 3! Dungeon Skill Mana Manipulation has leveled up to level 3! Derivative Dungeon Skill Matter Deconstruction gained!
I assume from the notifications that I got the desired result?.. What not going to confirm it Francine? Well nevermind, it''s time to turn mana into matter!.. ... ... ... Or so I said but it''s now what I assume to be an hour later and I still have no clue what to do. I''ve tried analyzing the grass, the dirt, the sky, the air, the pillar, the orb, hell i''ve analyzed the sun! But I still can''t turn mana into matter. I''m beginning to think this is going to either have a stupidly difficult or stupidly obvious solution in order to fix this. Well lets look back at everything i''ve done so far and look for clues there. I looked around me and gained the ability to look around in the 1st tutorial and those probably won''t have an impact on how to create matter so I can ignore them, I only learned how to use the status screen in 3 so its not that either, so all that''s left is tutorial 2... Maybe I should try looking at the mana in my core then? And unsuprisingly upon looking in my core I found the patterns of mana strings that were used for the dirt, or more acurately a model of them. For now let''s try making a copy of these mana strings using the mana goo in my core. So I began attempting to mold the goo into strings and found it to be incredibly difficult, the goo that would previously bend to my will was attempting to resist being turned into a new form, it felt like trying to swim in a pile of sludge. After an hour of frustration and extensive concentration I had finally managed to replicate the strings and so I placed them outside my core and suddenly dirt appeared. Mission Complete I guess?

Haaaaah Well for now let''s just not pay attention to the uniqueness of my conversion method and instead focus on the rewards! yay positivity! It seems some of my skills leveled up twice which I assume is nice, the derivative dungeon skills seem nice especially Matter Replication, that just screams "make duplicates" which sounds great because I might be able to duplicate one of a kind items and weapons. Another dungeon trait as well, Francine please explain?
System Alert
Inventive - Monsters under the influence of dungeon are more inventive. Slightly increases monster intelligence, Moderately increases monster creativity, Moderately increases chance of monsters creating and utilising natural terrain and traps, Greatly increases chances of monster finding "unique" solutions to problems.
It''s a cheat! The cheat is here! Haha! With this my monsters are now highly adaptive, loyal, ambitious, fast growing, and they use traps! Truly traits and titles are great!.. Although I do feel slighted with the "unique" comment, why is it in quotes? Are you making fun of me francine? Now anyway back to the rewards you said I get one free low-rank monster right? whats that about?
System Alert
You have the oppurtunity to choose from a group of low-ranking monsters and gain the ability to freely create one of them.
Free Monster
Animal - Any creature that can be classified as a normal animal, this can be anything from beasts to birds to reptiles. They lack strength normally but can become powerful through evolution. Strength - G+, Potential - A
Slime - An amorphous creature which is the small fry of small fry, they lack a strength and are widely considered to be the weakest monster in existence, however in the incredibly unlikely off chance that a slime survives till evolution they can become incredibly threating due to their specialised traits and nigh-infinite potential to evolve. Strength - G, Potential - S.
Goblin - Small humanoid creatures whose intelligence is as lacking as their hygiene, they wield primitive weaponry and operate under a tribal society with a chief standing at the top. Their strength is lacking but their humanoid form and minor intellect allows them to create traps and weaponry to even the playing field against a stronger opponent, their evolutions are fairly lackluster but can give significant boosts to their lacking attributes. Strength - F, Potential - B
Imp - The lowest level of demonic creature, they are devious pranksters with a love for traps and minor inconveniences. They are cable of wielding low-level fire and dark magic and have decent intelligence but they lack physical strength. Strength - F, Potential - B+
Kobold - Kobolds are said to be distant relatives of the legendary dragons, keyword distant. They are realtively weak initially but make up for this using intelligence and traps. Strength - F, Potential - S
Skeleton - Low ranking undead, they lack intelligence and strength but make up for this by having the potential to become powerful wielders of dark attribute magic and great physical strength in their higher evolutions. Strength - F, Potential A
Lesser Golem - Lesser versions of golems, they lack any form of intelligence and even the physical strength and durability golems are known for is lowered. Strength F, Potential B
Lesser Elemental - Lesser versions of elementals, they could also be called a child elemental. They have very faint consciousness and excel in magic of one specific attribute but lack physical attacks. Strength F, Potential A
...Well just to begin with there are so many hidden traps in this lost it''s honestly not even funny. Case #1, Kobolds having high potential and dragon blood, This is a clear trap as although this might trick people into thinking you''ll eventually get dragons the distant is emphasised on the status screen meaning its probably very difficult and unlikely to happen so im just going to cross them off the list now. My traits rapid growth and adaptation should allow me to take advantage of monsters with high potential, although it would only turn a 0.001% chance of happening into something slightly higher so I don''t feel like risking it with kobolds. Anyway I can remove the lesser golems, goblins and imps due to their potential of B. Skeleton''s as well because being an undead dungeon sounds like a horrible idea when the existence of a church is still unconfirmed, that''s a one-way ticket to being exterminated. That leaves me with lesser elementals, slimes and animals... the elementals feel like very focused mages and that would leave me with a very unbalanced dungeon so im doing to have to remove them from the list and that leaves me with slimes or animals. So do I wan''t the higher starting strength or the higher potential?.. You know what? The description of slimes says the reason they aren''t normally good is due to not being able to reach a higher evolution which combos with my dungeon perfectly due to my higher growth rates and chances of unique evolutions. So I choose slimes. This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
System Alert
You have chosen Slime as your free monster and have now gained the ability to create them.
...I don''t feel any different though? No bursts of knowledge or sudden realisations, although on second thought its probably stores in my core like the dirt. Yep there it is, well for now I suppose I should take a look at the last reward, Dungeon Avatar I think it was called? Francine what''s a dungeon avatar?
System Alert
A Dungeon Avatar is an ability unique to Chromatic Dungeons allowing them to create a humanoid body in order for them to interact with the world around them personally. These bodies cost large amounts of mana to create and only one can be active at a time, it is possible for the Dungeon Avatar to leave the dungeon but this is not recommended as it would result in you being unable to manage your dungeon. The race and abilities of your avatar will be based of your dungeon colour and the avatar itself will be treated like a dungeon monster granting it boons from the dungeons traits and giving it the ability to evolve like one (the mental influence effects of traits like overachiever will not affect the avatar). Would you like your dungeon avatar to be generated?
...So I get a body? And it gets loads of boosted traits?
System Alert
Yes
Ha. Haha. Hahahahahahahahahahaha! Francine make me my dungeon avatar! With my words it felt like the world begin shifting, I could see the mana strings in the environment coalesce taking shape into a humanoid figurine, it was more complicated and more beautiful than anything I had seen before with lights shimmering and shifting, strings weaving in and out of each other creating a complex network of interconnected parts. I was awestruck at the beauty of it all. The beauty of mana and of the living. But alas as suddenly as it begun it ended, with a flash of light my body stood there, and I was amazed by what I saw in more ways than one.

...God damn it why is my gender N/A! Chapter 2.1 - One step forward, Three steps back. Chapter 2.1 - One step forward, Three steps back. Edited by: Myself
The body that was created looked normal at first glance but the status screen clearly reavealed the abnormality known as "Gender: N/A". That in itself is troubling but the body itself semeed to lean more towards being feminine than male so I guess its not completely genderless, at least I hope. Although I say it look feminine only the face looked clearly feminine, the rest of the body was fairly neutral. The hair was a light grey reaching down to the waist, the eyes were a similar shade of light grey and the body was fairly tall, perhaps reaching 6 feet at most? There was a clear lack of any gender specific parts, namely a lack of breasts, and the body itself was fairly slim. Overall I looked good... just that there was no identifiable parts. Also im fairly sure theres nothing down there either but I can''t tell due to the fact that the body comes with free clothing, namely a robe which looks like it was taken straight from a cultist or a magician. So Francine care to explain why my gender is N/A?
System Alert
The gender of the dungeon avatar, like all parts of the body, are decided by the dungeons colour along with taking part of their personal preference into the mix. The colour of grey''s gender preference is genderless and as such your body was creating without a gender, however your soul leans more towards female than male and as such the appearance was altered slightly to suit you more.
As expected everything has a downside, and this is Dungeon of Grey''s downside... Well there''s nothing I can do about it anyway. I''m just going to roll with it. Anyway guess I may as well get the information dump out of the way now, Francine tell me what all the stuff means.

So you''re fine with telling me everything about how to be a dungeon but you say nothing about a normal body?! Don''t I deserve to know this sort of stuff since I wasn''t born in this world?!... Seriously nothing? Nothing at all?... ... ... Fine I give up but can you at least tell me what the 3 skills I have do? ... ... Fine I get it, be that way Francine. Since it seems Francine is going to ignore me im just going to attempt to possess the avatar now. I expand my senses to encompass it and find that the knowledge of how to enter the avatar flow into me... if only they did that for everything in the tutorial as well. There was a brief flash of darkness and then suddenly my field of view had changed, now instead of the previous 360 view my dungeon core gave me I now saw like a normal human, or in other words I was now inside the avatar. "Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3" A voice which couldn''t be identified as either male or female rung out in the surroundings, my voice. I actually don''t mind it that much, i''m not getting a sense of rejection from it at least. Let''s start of with some stretch''s in order to get me familiarised with my new body... Stretch my arms, bend my legs, yea thats good enough. Everything appears to be working fine on this front so for now I guess I should begin with actually expanding my dungeon, after all I am in the middle of a field and I would greatly prefer not to have my core get sniped by someone with a bow, but to do that I need to utilise the matter controlling abilities properly, and also how to use them in my avatar... you know what I kind of wish I still had the tutorial. "Haaaah" Although I do have the plus side of being able to audibly sigh now so thats a benefit of all this. Well firstly I may as well identify what constitutes as a "core" in my body... it''s probably the heart isn''t it? Concentrating on my heart I attempt to feel the mana inside it and find that I was wrong, the mana isn''t concentrated inside my heart but it does connect up to what im gonig to temporarily refer to as the mana lines, lines of mana spreading throughout my body like veins in case you couldn''t guess. Having noticed this I do what any sane experimenter does, I follow the line to it''s source. Following the line I notice that it connects up to a sphere of mana where my brain should be and that other line are branching off from this sphere, kind of like the brains the centre of the network. Looking at it closer and my nwely obtained mental image of the mana lines I realise that they look similar to a drawing of where the nerves are in the body, I guess this means that my mana lines are like a second set of nerves. It also means that damaging them would probably have a detrimental effect on my body control as well as my mana, I should take note of that, could end up using it against someone later.
System Alert
Intelligence increases by 1
Wait what? Why''d my intelligence increase? Is it because I mapped my mana lines? Or is it because I made a hypothesis about how they''re similar to nerves? ... Well it seems i''m not going to get an answer (as expected) so i''ll just roll with it for now. Now that im done mapping my mana lines lets actually try to use mana for something like matter deconstruction... As expected it doesn''t work, nothing happens. It seems like im going to have to find a new way building and using mana while in my human form. "Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay"
