"Hm?" A young, paleboy wasalerted by the default monotone voice of his wristwatch, his face lit up as he thought of the possibility of what it could be. ''Please, please, please let it be about Cry of Iron.'' He barely wasted a moment before swiping down on the small screen of his watch to reveal the Emal...
Unread Emails! (1) From...
Cry Of Iron Congratulations Frey!
The young man stared listlessly for a moment before his eyes brightened and allowed words to escape his mouth "It''s actually... It says "Congratulations Frey!... No way..." His scrawny white hands were shaking at the thought of being able to play Cry of iron. The game that has been in development for longer than anyone can remember, the first truly immersive virtual reality game. An entire capsule was created to put the user in a form of suspended animation in order to play, they would feel everything as if it actually happened. Even for today''s standards, its an amazing piece of technology that, in theory, could even give the feeling of having legs to war victims, the joy of hearing to those impaired. It could even greatly help those going through therapy to walk without the pain. The reason that Fray wanted to play this game so desperately wasn''t because of any of those reasons though. He no longer enjoyed today''s standards for games, nowadays, developers seemed not to care about their buyers. They threw out games every year that seemed basically the same as the last.Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon. Originality was long gone. The broad expanse of genres he loved had eventually died down. Everyone seemed to only play crappy repetative shooters now, gone was the love for the roleplaying games, the thrill of the boss fights, the guilds, the joy of leveling... All forgotten, at least, until Cry Of Iron. A fantasy game focussed solely on immersion, the NPC''s were said to be as real as humans, the landscape was more real than the world outside to Fray. The concrete jungle had devoured all of the nature that he had once taken for granted. Trees were an endangered species, humans had a new *safer and more reliable* source of oxygen and now, funnily enough, small amounts of trees were being preserved out of public eye, underground, on the moon and some say in the mars base... There wasn''t anything in the world that Fray enjoyed anymore, he was just barely getting by on the leftover inheritance his late parents had left him when they passed. If he hadn''t heard about Cry of Iron, he might have given up already. If he hadn''t won his capsule from this, he would have likely gone into serious debt just to load into the world. Luckily, he was granted a once in a lifetime chance. He would not let this slip, so naturally, his first step was to open the Email... Congratulations Fray! You''re one of the 10,000 lucky contest winners chosen to test the Beta version of Cry Of Iron. You will be the first testers outside of the Creation Team. More info will be given to you when you receive your first capsule. Attached to this email, you will find a contract. Please read it carefully, honestly answer it, sign it and send it back A-S-A-P. It will be personally reviewed by the creators'' main team and, once approved you will receive the gaming capsule within 2-3 working days. We hope you will enjoy being the first visitors to this new world of ours. Follow the path or make your own, there are no limits but the ones you set yourself. The wait. "Hah...." Frey was beyond speechless after reading the email, he had to pinch himself before he could even start to believe it. His heartbeat was far above his average as indicated on his watch, it warned that he may need to take some deep breaths to calm down. Frey took heed to the advice and regulated his breathing before opening the attached file... After carefully taking his time and reading the hundred and fourteen-page attachment, he couldn''t bear to keep in his joy and an awkward but truthful smile appeared on his face. How long had it been since he had last smiled truthfully? He couldn''t remember, it felt strange to smile again. The attachment contained lots of legal jibba''jabbah, causes of concern, warnings that it may affect health, cause epilepsy and much more. None of these was important as the game had been thoroughly tested and Frey was sure he wouldn''t be medically incapable of using the machine. The pages also informed him of many amazing uses of the capsule, things like a feeding tube for long gaming sessions, health monitors, a direct chat with the main team of the game and much, much more. One catch however, one was forbidden from recording any gameplay, no pictures, recordings or soundclips were permitted. However, you could create guides and ect and send out spoilers so long as it had the spoiler tag and people knew what was about to be spoiled. This book''s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience. Naturally, he didn''t hesitate to sign his full name on the bottom right of the document and sign it off. Now, it was a simple matter of waiting 3-4 days as it was currently Sunday by the count of the billboard that obscured any view he may have had outside of his small, one flat. "I guess I could check the news.." Frey unknowingly muttered to himself as he pulled his wristwatch up to his mouth and spoke "Today''s news".

Retro gaming, still relevent? 1,042 300
Looking over at the first post, Frey wasn''t so surprised to find a high amount of people claiming to be one of the thousand, though many were fakes as he could clearly tell by the sheer amount of people claiming so. There was hardly any real information posted bar the email and attachment a user named "African_Bluetack" posted. "I wish retro gaming would make a comeback, I really miss the old RPGs... Guildwars, Diablo, Path of exile, Skyrim, the fall of the dragon, the abyss knight... There were so many golden oldies..." Frey sent a quick glance over to his desktop computer before looking over to the top left side of his fridge-freezer.
You have approximately 26 days worth of Dinners
You have an extimated 3-6 days of snacks
I suppose I could always load up my desktop for one last time... Arcanum could be fun for 3 or four days... Cry Of Iron Three days quickly passed due to ravaging the worlds with his necromancer in Arcanum, Frey was startled by two heavy bangs on his door. ''That must be it!'' Not even bothering to finish the battle he was waging he jumped up from his desk and quickly speed-walked towards the door whilst the "Shut down PC" flew out of his mouth. He opened the door for the first time in 2 weeks without the slightest hesitation whilst wearing probably the scruffiest outfit he owned, an old light grey tracksuit. The team of four somewhat burly men seemed surprised by how pale and scrawny he was but they obviously weren''t that bothered, after all, they probably had quite a few more trips to make after this. The largest of the men, stepped forward, towering at least a head above Frey and handed him a book titled "Guide to getting started" before he asked with a casual voice "I suppose you want it there?" as he pointed to the large open space inside of Freys living room. Truthfully, Frey hadn''t even thought of moving any furniture or even cleaning up, as you could tell by the few odd packets of snacks around, but he already had a lot of open space in his apartment as he didn''t own any furniture bar his bed and his desk. He tended to keep the floor relatively clear so he may play any dance games he may have an urge to play. "Uh. Oh! Yeah, there''s perfect!" Frey replied with a minor stutter from probably his first human contact in months. Without another word the men carried multiple large boxes inside of his house and asked him to leave the house for an hour as so he could not distract them. "Uh..." It was strange to leave a bunch of strangers inside of his house unattended but, he didn''t really have anything worth stealing so, he silently made his way past the men, set his watch timer to an hour and proceeded to calmly wait on the floor outside his apartment door. 55 minutes pass. It was a cruel task, to wait an hour before he was able to log in, but he made use of his time by reading the manual. The first page was an explanation of many of the questions he would be asked upon loading up the game, most were self-explanatory but there was one that stood out. "These are choices only for your thousand, please take care and understand what will happen with these options. 1. Start the game normally. You will have default limitations, you will be restricted to the Beta areas and unable to progress past a certain level but no progress will be lost upon release. 2. Play as a king. You will be in a single-player version of the game, testing city building, kingdom management and much more. You can switch to 1 at any point, but one cannot change to the king once the creation has finished. Your character will be reset to level 1 when the beta is over but you will start with an experience potion to instantly boost you to level 5 for all your help. 3. Live a life of servitude. Act as an NPC to a king, you will be used for many tasks, such as sending letters, attending to royalty, cooking food and much more. If you do tasks correctly and the king deems you as a good servant, once the game is released you will be reset to level one, but you will have a 10% increase in XP gain and have the title "Passed life of servitude."The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement. There were more choices like these, but Frey wanted to play normally, although he may not be able to be a king and manage his territory yet, he was sure, if he wanted to in the future, he may be able to achieve such a goal through hard work. Being confined to castle walls wasn''t something that sounded attractive to Frey as he wanted to explore the vast world he was promised. Rada-a-dadada-dada Frey''s watch sent vibrations and sounded a small alarm to alert him of the hour. He promptly dragged himself up onto his feet and knocked on his own door. The door opened and the worker asked "Full name and address for verification" and once Frey answered him, the man spoke again, this time with a slightly rushed voice "Very prompt timing young man, we have just finished filling your capsule, its recommended that you wait 5 or so hours for the liquid to warm up to room temperature but its not a necessity if you want to play quickly, it will just be a bit chilly. When you enter just allow the machine to manoeuvre your body as it pleases to avoid injury. Oh, and the creators wish you a wonderful second life. We will be on our way now, goodbye." The men then exited one by one passed Frey, leaving him outside his house shaking with excitement. "Bye! Thanks so much!" Shouted Frey as he realised they had almost got out of sight. Entering the room, Frey was beyond speechless. In the dead centre of his living room, towering up to the roof was a metallic grey box, so large it was strange it didn''t require more men to assemble. The only details on the box were "Cry of iron. Special Beta edition engraved with a golden colour. Frey couldn''t hold himself back from running towards it after closing his door. As soon as he approached the machine, however, it grumbled and seemed to split down the centre. There was a slick "Shreee" kind of sound as the metal manoeuvred itself to create a small door frame. The voice of a default female robotic voice sounded: "Greetings, scans show that you are British Citizen #5671, also known as Frey. Creator seven drew your number and hopes you will enjoy playing Cry of iron. Before I continue, I see you have a favourite voice selected in your settings, would you like me to switch?" Wanting to quickly get into the game Frey gave his approval and waited for the voice he chose to speak. A humorous exited man''s melodramatic voice started to squeal "Frey! There are many things for you to find out about this machine, most you will find out by yourself, however, a word of caution, first use will cause some minor pain, especially if you don''t wait the recommended 5 hours before entering. Several tubes and needles will be injected into your skin, and you will be bound to the machine until you choose to exit. The machine will only ever forcefully eject you if your life is in danger either from the game or from reality. If you will be entering now, please strip down and enter the machine." After listening to the machine Frey found it to be as he had expected, most of what it said was a repeat of the things he had read. He proceeded to strip down naked before climbing into the box. The interior was very different from the plain outside. There was no seat, just a big pool like drop filled with a strange, silicon-like goo which he was to be submerged in shortly. The inside was pure black with lots of small slots in the wall for the varies parts of machinery to eject from. He slowly lowered himself in the goo, which, to his discomfort was icy cold, however, he knew that he only had to bear with it until he was integrated with the machine. Once his head was completely below the surface he waited for the expected metal arms to grab and position him, however, what happened next surprised him. He felt human-like hands, gently caress his four limbs as they slowly dragged him deeper, much deeper than Frey remembered it should have been able to go. The arms slowly grabbed him tighter and tighter until he was immobilized and at the mercy to the machine, he then felt several things stab into his body causing immense discomfort and minor pain. A sustenance substance tube stuffed itself into his mouth and down his throat, he felt something like a deeper form from the goo around his nether regions, obviously for toiletry needs and then, everything went black.
Welcome to Cry Of iron, the world where the impossible is reality.
Before we begin, everything starts with a name, you know ours, what is yours?
"Frey." The start of something big.
Welcome to the new world, Frey.
An overly exited melodramatic voice practically screamed as soon as the welcome notification passed. "Frey! Before I am allowed to let you begin, please bear in mind that you can Private Message the Creators inside your friends list, do so only incase of emergancy or with any errors you may find. Thank you, and enjoy."
The kingdoms have been at peace for many centuries, the ground is fertile and few are unfortunate.
The Die of Beginnings is awaiting your roll.
With that last notification fading away, Frey found himself in a white abyss. White air spreading further than he could imagine surrounded him and immediately in front of him, was two large, pitch black dice floating without a sound. Before Frey could question their reason of being...
Player 1, your first die will soon be rolled, this is a fate of everyone. No matter the world, everything starts with luck.
''1? I suppose I''m the first player to start? I''ll be first to exper'' The system seemed intent on preventing him from thinking as at that very moment, the first die began spinning. It spun so fast that he wasn''t capable of seeing the dots anymore, just streaks of white amongst all the black. He felt as though if it got any faster he might be pulled towards it, being instantly bludgeoned by the revolving die. With a sudden gust of wind, the wind came to an almost instant stop. The dice no longer had white dots, it was as though they had been blown off from the spinning pressure. Frey was about to question if there had been a fault, as he was the first person to join, perhaps it was possible? However, to his relief, white bubbles seemed to seep from the surface of the die before making a simple number. Number 1.
The die has been cast. Your start in life is decided. The second die will now roll.
This time, the other dice started to rotate, exactly the same thing as before happened, however this time, he rolled a 5.If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it.
The fates have been sealed.
With that last message, everything went black. -- "Ugh?" Frey found himself to be laying on what felt like the floor with his eyes closed, there was something spikey poking into his ear, probably a factor to his waking up. ''A dream?'' There was no way. He used his arms to rub the sleep out of his eyes before finally opening them. "Straw?" The spikey thing bothering him was a long, golden strand of straw. Looking around to get his bearings, his certainly wasn''t home. He was lying on a stone slab with nothing but hay and loose pieces of hiding keeping him from feeling the chill of the stone, the walls around him were bear and seemed to be made from mud, there were another two of such slabs beside him and a lit fire in the centre of the hut. Whoever lived here was living a very poor life. "What the... No way... Uh. Status Screen?"

"Ah, so it''s like that, I''m actually in the game..." Frey could honestly not believe it. He felt everything, he felt the pain from having something as small as straw poke him. It was unimaginable how realistic it was. He pinched himself to check, and sure enough, he could physically feel the pain from being pinched. A game with this much immersion, could it be popular? Pain is not something that people like, he himself certainly doesn''t. Has there ever been a game that didn''t show me statistic points from the get-go? and why do I have two titles already?'' ''A 20% bonus to EXP gain for everything? Something like that so early in the game...Amazing.'' Humble Living The crackling of the open fire seemed to soothe Frey''s mind, he may have been entranced if not for the muffled shouts and laughs coming from beyond the poorly assembled wooden door. ''First things first, so far, it seems as though the system is trying to smoothly integrate my in with this world. From what I can make out, I seem to be the son of either a man named Hunter or someone in the hunter profession. I should go and get my bearings, find out where I am and how to start the questline.'' Frey was garbed in typical grey rags that although covered his whole body, surely would not provide sufficient warmth even during summer. He glanced around the small hut but it was apparent that whilst there were a few bundled pieces of clothing around, they did not belong to him as they were kept close to the other "beds". "The game won''t experience its self," Frey muttered as a smile appeared on his face. After approaching the wooden door, he realized that he could no longer see the outside through the cracks, now, it was black as if it was night. Before he could ponder the situation, the door swung towards him knocking him off of his feet sending him tumbling backwards.

Frey lay on the floor in pain, unable to breathe due to being winded, his vision blurry due to his low health. "Son!" A worried man''s voice reached Frey''s ears and through his blurry eyes, Frey managed to see a large man hunch over him. The previous worry that seemed to have a hold over the man disappeared once he realized Frey was fine. "You okay? What were you doing hiding behind the door like that? Shouldn''t you have been preparing the food?" "I should have been preparing the food? What food? I''m sorry, who are you? Where am I?" A bundle of questions poured out of Frey''s mouth once the pain died down. The man lifted his eyebrows and pointed his burly arm towards the fire in the centre of the room and spoke flatly. "Don''t play dumb kid, you know your chores, you better have made a start on cooking that chicken when I get back from my business. It''s by the door." "O-Okay..?" Frey voiced his agreement before the man walked out of the hut, leaving Frey alone once again. ''Chores? Do I have to cook a chicken? Is this a quest?'' Frey looked around near the door but was unable to see the chicken. "Bwok bwoak!" The sound of an agitated chicken was voiced from beyond the door. ''Its still alive?'' Frey walked over and unlike last like, successfully opened the door, revealing a small opening surrounded by lumbering, lush green trees. ''I was hoping for a village...'' Disappointment was clear in his voice and his face. "BWOAK BOWAAK!" Frey was thrown back into reality by the panicked scream of a chicken to his side. Looking beside himself he saw it. A large chicken seemingly crammed into a wood intwined cage that was about three sizes too small for the beast. "Poor little guy, looks like your dinner today, huh? I wonder if you will give any experience..." Frey wasted no time in grabbing the cage and carelessly throwing the cage inside the hut and following it in.This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere. "CHBWUAK" the chicken screamed in fear as the cage smashed into the floor and bouncing a few spaces away.

"Yesh, what a useless title." Frey brushed the title off and walked up to the encaged chicken which was staring at him with fearful eyes. ''I have to prepare this chicken, so, kill, pluck and cook? or do you gut it before you cook?'' "Knife... I''ll need a knife." Frey never remembered seeing a knife anywhere and even after a brief look around he was unable to find one. He seemed to remember that he may or may not have heard that they had their necks broken too but he was unsure, he didn''t want to hurt it more than necessary as firstly he wouldn''t get any experience and secondly, he felt a strange drop in his gut after he threw the chicken and heard it scream. "Don''t worry chicken, I''ll try and find a way to do it as quick and painless as possible." After racking his brain about it, he wasn''t able to think of any faster way than breaking its neck, if he could even break its neck... "Even just a sharp or heavy rock would do better than my trying and failing at breaking its neck, that would just terrify and hurt the poor chicken..." It was at that very moment that he noticed it, a small, sharp-pointed stick that seemed to have broken off of the cage when he threw it. With it, surely he could easily puncture the neck through the cage and prevent struggling and finish the job quickly and cleanly... ''Yes. That is the best option.'' He decisively grabbed the sharp stick and walked towards the chicken, it was now facing away from him staring into the fire. He crouched down to be able to ensure a fast and accurate attack, raised his weapon, and quickly stabbed down towards the back of its head. "BWAAAUH BRAOK WUABK!" Although the wood stabbed into the chicken''s neck, it wasn''t a finishing move, Frey had no choice but to pull the stick out and continuously stab it again, and again, and again until it finally stopped moving. Frey felt a tightening feeling in his stomach after his brutal act of murder. "I... What the f*ck... This feels so damn real...I''m... getting excited to play even more." The stick had broken off into several pieces inside of the chicken''s body. These would have to be pulled out before any cooking could be done.

''12XP earned? Sweet.'' Humble Living (2) Preparing the chicken ''I guess I need to prepare and cook the chicken then?'' Frey''s eyes drifted over towards the bloody corpse of the chicken, its plump body now lay lifelessly flat with some thin splinters protruding from varies areas. He squatted down beside the body and observed it expecting a screen to pop up saying something like "Prepare chicken?" or something, but, to his confusion, not a single pop-up window appeared. ''Does this mean... I have to actually do it all manually?'' A truly shocking thought, but, perhaps the only logical possibility at this point. "Ugh..." A groan escaped his lips as he reached over towards the corpse. The sticky red blood of the chicken staining his hands as he slowly plucked each of the visible splinters from its skin. ''There''s going to be too much blood, my hands are covered just from getting rid of the damn splinters... I''ll have to drain it first.'' After removing all the visible splinters, Frey knew he should drain the chicken of its blood to make plucking it easier. The only problem is, of course, how could he slice its skin without a knife? Again, there was absolutely no knife in the hut, but, with all the stones outside, Frey had an idea, an idea that may not work, but an idea nonetheless. He left the chicken where it lay and walked outside for a moment before strolling back in with a rock. The rock he carried was very average, apart from the fact that one of its sides seemed to have a point. Of course, that wouldn''t be much to note but with all the scratches on the point, it seems that Frey would have scraped it against another rock to "sharpen" the rock. ''...This certainly won''t slice... but maybe...'' Frey walked up to the chicken''s corpse and once again, crouched down beside it. He moved hay from outside and put it around the chicken like a wall before spreading the chicken out as far as it could stretch, raised the rock above his head and then... *THUD THUD THUD* He continually pounded the rock against the chicken''s small neck, each time digging the sharp part into the neck. He had closed his eyes to shield from the blood but, surprisingly, no blood spurted up, and instead only slightly marked the stone. After hitting the chickens neck no more than 6 times, the head rolled away from its body with a small trail of blood following. ''It worked!'' A smile worked its way onto Frey''s young face as he grabbed the headless chicken and hung it above his hay pile so that it could bleed into the hay. About a minute passed before Frey realised it was going to take a very long time if he left it up to this method, so, after briefly mulling it over in his head, he thought that the best course of action would be to skin and gut the chicken whilst it was still bleeding without plucking its feathers. This book''s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience. This wasn''t as easy a task as he had first thought, even though it was just a chicken, manually pulling the skin off of the chicken was quite difficult. The only starting point he had was the neck which had been bleeding for a few minutes already, his fingers constantly slipped off of the flesh it probably took 20 minutes of solely pulling and tearing to actually skin the plump chicken. ''Wow... This is taking a lot longer than I had anticipated.'' Luckily, gutting the chicken was a lot easier and by the time he was finished, the chicken was practically free of blood. "*Sigh* I suppose its time to finally cook it then? I wonder when that man will come back, I assume this is a timed mission, I am taking a lot longer than I should be..." Frey passively picked up the chicken and walked towards the fire, he reached to the left side of the fire where there was a metal pole where one would impale what you wished to cook and then slowly roast. Frey had seen hog-roasting often enough in games to understand how it works without much difficulty. ''Whilst that cooks on that side I should quickly dispose of all the blooded hay.'' The hut was far messier than it originally was, so without wasting any more time, Frey grabbed the broken cage and started stuffing the bloodied hay inside. It didn''t take too long and before long, the broken cage was filled with bloody, wet, sticky hay. He left it besides the door as he still had absolutely no idea of how things worked around here. Returning back to the roasting chicken, he continued rotating the corpse over the fire.

"Oh... That kind of sucks. I can''t actually allocate any stat points or gain a perk yet. I wish it would at least tell me how to earn the right, will it be a level barrier or a mission or what?" Frey pondered out loud but the system was surely not going to be giving him any answers any time soon. The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings. ''I have earned a total of 25 exp if I recall correctly, from this I can make an estimated guess that It cost me 20exp to level up, the next level should be at 50 or so, usually I would run out like a mad hat and attack creatures above my level but due to the test where I felt pain, I do not wish to test the system to see how much pain its willing to inflict on me, I must first gain a few skills or at least a weapon. Which reminds me, that old man should be home soon, I don''t want the chicken to burn...'' With that thought leaving his mind, Frey turned his attention to the cooked chicken he had left above the fire. The only possible solution to keep the chicken warm was to keep it over the fire, he would just have to keep rotating it until it until the man came back and simply hope that it didn''t burn. ... Frey waited for a lot longer of a time than he had thought he would need to. He must have continuously spun the chicken for over an hour already yet there was still no word back from the man. ''Should I just sit idlyor should I try and find him?'' The thought brieflypassed Frey''s mind, but, he remembered, not only does he have to keep the chicken from burning to pass the quest, but he also wouldn''t have had the faintest idea of how to find the man, what if he went in the wrong direction and got lost? What if the man returned whilst Frey was looking? Alas, it seemed Frey''s only choice was to continue to wait for the man to return. ... The light that once peered in through the door was fading, darkness was in a fierce fight to destroy the light, the birds had ceased to sing and the tree''s had started to wheeze. Silence ruled over the small hut, the crackling of the fire and Freys breathing was the sole sound until a very faint noise could be heard from outside... *Crunch, crounch* The sound of sticks breaking and old leaves being crushed was faintly distinguishable from outside the hut. ''About time,I have turned this stupid chicken for a few hours already.'' It was no exaggeration, time may pass differently in the capsule, but even in the outside world, he had indeed waited no small amount of hours for the man to return. Most people who started playing at the same time as Frey would have already logged off by now. The door once again slowly creaked open to reveal the big, burly man who unlike before, now had several rabbit corpses tied to his ragged hide clothing. "Im back, are your chores done kiddo?" The man asked whilst placing the corpses and his hunting equipment down.
