《Breathing exercises》 An Awkward Trio The night was slowly falling down on the forest. On the vestiges of human cities it was not considered especially dangerous to travel at night. While bears, wolves and occasional vile creatures of the darkness may make their appearance before unlucky adventurer, such things were scarce and rare. It was even more so recently, after kingdom has announced Purge to celebrate new heir ascendance, combing through all the forests near cities with newly assembled knight brigades. With all this taken in mind a somewhat worn out cart escorted by a knight and squire wouldn''t be deemed lacking in security even by most practiced advisor. Still, accidents do happen, and young girl seated in cart appeared nervous. Veiled forest was whispering all sorts of sounds startling the only daughter of Baron Sheyield with distant howls, cracks of broken branches and hustles in bushes surrounding the road. Back in the days this track was mapped on most travelling guides as the only path connecting human city of Nardh and Academy of Proper Upbringing. In modern times, however, it was nigh forgotten since almost every noble child of Nardh was attending one of the numerous Imperial Institutions, leaving side road leading to academy in disposal of more poor aristocratic families who saw their decline - like Sheyields. Crisping fire lantern attached on the inner walls inside the cart was highlighting this lone passenger''s feminine features: her slightly pale refined face with shapely eyes, long lashes, thin lips and straight smooth black hair running down her shoulders. Girl''s frail undeveloped frame, her slim arms and upright posture were creating a strong impression ofaristocratic young lady. In contrast, her dress was excessively plain, simple and bore clear signs of being patched over on more than single occasion. Girl''s eyes were half-closed and her lashes fluttered every time cart was met with especially nasty bump on ruined road. - Lady Celine. A graphite chiseled helm appeared in cart window, warely peeking inside. - Lady Celine, we will be arriving at city gates within 3 hours. How are you feeling? Apparently, this noble daughter name was Celine Sheyield and right now she was suffering from severe case of road sickness. The girl, however, didn''t respond immediately to knight''s question and only maintained her stiffened pose. It was at this moment that a head full of dyed red hair cut short at bangs appeared in the front window at coachman position and burst into laughter. - Martha, it is inconvenient for lil'' missy to speak right now. She might spill her dinner if you make her do otherwise! Lady Celine glared in her direction and then gently shook head gesturing to chiseled helm owner to drop the notion of taking a break. The helmet released a muffled sigh and then dissappeared from the window. A moment later it reappeared in frontalsection vicinity and loud slaps travelled through the night. - Stop being so impudent to your masters, Chatty, you are asking for a beating! - Aya, what masters?! I haven''t been paid for 2 months you know? Wait, isn''t this same for you?! More slaps resounded then and voices of women bickering eventually went into distance. Lady Celine sat there without changing her pose or expression. Her nails, though, were oh so slowly recovering color afer being clutched tightly into fists. Respect was not something a declining family descendant could command, even from a lowly squire. If anything, the distance between aristocrat drowned in debt and commoner was already thin enough. And even before that, failing to provide a timely payment to servant was a clear breach of master-servant relationship, so how can be servant blamed for his followed conduct? Young girl sighed and shut her eyes. Worrying about such matters at the moment could only further worsen her mood so she would patiently endure. At this time red haired girl was begrudgingly driving the cart not ceasing her torrent of protests. - ...I just don''t get you, Martha. Are they stuffing your heads with powder in the capital, during training? I mean, you have been serving lil'' miss all the time she was in academy, you lived with servants, ate with servants, suffered constant mockery from other knights for this, too! All because lil'' miss family apparently can''t even afford the proper rent, right? And you even weren''t paid for your service yet! The way I see it, you are the one who took it the hardest of us two! Why do you keep defending that pampered doll? - Chatty, you keep lashing horses too hard... Calm down or I''ll take your place and have you ride on my horse. See, if Cavalier will bear with your temper or not. - Oh great, now you even bully me for saying the truth. Aya, these knights, totally wrong in the head! The red haired girl, Chatty, however indeed calmed down and, whilecontinuing to mutter obscenities, eased up on the horses who were already starting to foam a little. The squire was a lowly servant job, quite meddlesome and time-consuming, given that she had to tend both to her immediate superior - knight - and noble master''s needs. If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. Well, this wasn''t normally a case because young ladies were usually taken care of by specially assigned maids, unless it was a road trip where squire''s ability to contribute in battle may sometimes lead to them taking places of all other kinds of servants to increase efficiency. However, given Sheyield family circumstances Chatty was the only servant here and fulfilled all kinds of jobs herself which led to her current irritated disposition. Being in her early twenties she was not as young as Baron''s daughter and have already awakened to the pleasures of the court which was evident from how she had dyed her hair, adjusted her face with heavy make up and dressed into somewhat revealing clothes. A dress actually more expensive than her master''s own outfit was accentuating servant girl''s numerous assets - despite her short stature - astonishingly developed chest area and plump behind. Back in the academy she was leaving a sweetheart, the very sponsor of her trinkets and entertainment outside of everyday boresome duties. Young man was a promising lieutentant of a wall guard and relationship with him was nearing a crucial juncture that may have eventually allowed Chatty to leave this hated occupation. Hence, Baron''s sudden summons and young lady immediate departure deepened Chatty grudges all the more. All the various expressions of this simple servant girl were currently observed with a sigh by Martha, who was riding to the side of the cart on towering black horse. Oldest of all present in this entourage this female knight was actually the one most aware of injustice that have befallen her. Her helm already in her hand, she was dazing off into the distance, a dreamy look in her eyes. Bested 13th Imperial Institution''s, the most famous of them all, entrance exams at the age of 14, she quickly rose to prominence as youngest female knight among her peers. When other children were only nearing their candidacy trials Martha was already on the road to 2nd rank knight. At the age of 16 she earned 3d rank. At the age of 20 - 4th. Now, on the eve of her 25th birthday Martha was actually facing almost predetermined promotion to the ranks of Paladin - the epitome of knighthood Runadh Empire had to offer. Itis necessary tonote that after the rank of Paladin, knights could take numerous jobs, hold various civil and military offices but their rank will always remain the same - Paladin. This was the apex of the occupation and Martha was within the reaches of said apex astonishingly at the age of 24. With such great prospects this talented woman could have taken a vast majority of sinecure positions at the palace where one could stay idle all day long, paying occasional visits to noble establishments, holding parties and wallowing away in carnal pleasures. She, however, were it out of childish idealism or hot-blooded pursuit of adventure, left the capital on her own volition to take various field jobs in recent years. These were relatively calm days. Vicious people were holding back with Purge being still imminent in everyone memories. Imperial military was marching strong right and left, court has been refreshed with the change of the ruler and networks of corruption and poison were only spreading among the new office. There was not much to do and when there was - the risk was almost null, clearly unbefitting of heroic Knight-cum-Paladin. It was at that time that a request from her family arrived to take care for a year-some of Baron Sheyield''s daughter - for they weren''t able to afford hiring knightguard from the office and could only rely on their familial connections. Martha''s parents, representatives of enormous aristocratic family Roseblade, were clearly very worried about their daughter''s recent unruly behaviour which led her venturing to all the dangerous - in Count Roseblade''s opinion - places, and were happy to send her to this mission allegedly devoid of dangers. That''s why this task, normally far out of reach for declining nobility like Sheyields, have been gladly accepted and passed to Martha with a subtle pretext to make it a last ''adventure'' and return the capital immediately after. Being slightly fed up with dissapointment from her previous unfruitful campaigns Martha picked up this dull job and was actually starting to look forward to her return to the capital, while passing her days disciplining this rebellious squire from Sheyields family, ignorant of any sense of justiceor propriety. While based onher father''s letter she expected a certain degree of poverty surrounding young lady, Martha was still shocked by cruel reality. Even in Imperial Institution''s garrisons the difference between military from commoners and nobility wasstill evident so this frugal lifestyle and indiffirent treatment she experienced in Academy of Proper Upbringing came anew and tempered young knight for not a small bit, while making departure to capital more alluring. The graphite chiseled armor and staunch black horse were both provided by Roseblade family for their most promising descendant. Now, it must be said that these things were not for show - both the offensive and defensive potentials of this equipment were highest quality. And while Martha''s frivolous missions to frontlines werementioned to be nothing serious they were actually filled with military encounters. This still was war and war is never to be taken lightly. Thus, it could be said without a doubtthat, even leaving aside her training in the capital, Martha knew how to fight, could fight and had actual experience fighting. If anything, she had killed people before. This was reflected in her frame - if heavy breastplate were to be removed one would witness a fully developed womanly figure with explosive youthful vigor coming from long slender legs with shapely contours, slim but laced with thick muscles waist, round bossom, curved shoulders and back. It was not so obvious when Martha was riding on the horse - since Cavalier himself was a black giant surpassing two cart-dragging horses almost by half of their height - but she was tall, very tall. While not out of proportions this height still provided female knight with number of inconveniences, as well as benefits, when communicating with others. In general, however, people were very accepting of this tall blonde natural beauty with stern face and azure eyes, whose very image was of upright knighthood and nobility. This, of course, didn''t apply to Chatty who was envious of some of Martha''s strong points as a woman leading to a certain rivalry in this area between them - mostly one-sided - and even more so, of her noble birth and prestige occupation. With that, some bickering between two women was almost warranted. Speaking of which, Martha has suddenly broken out of her daze, noticing how Chatty has gone quite for a moment and horses have slowed down their rally almost stopping. -Chatty, why have you... - with a frown started Martha but her words wereimmediatelyintercepted. -Aya, this doesn''t look good! Speaking no further in a single motion knightdonned helm and took in surroundings, as her eyes turned serious behind the visor. Appearance of the Hero (Part 1) Martha observed the road ahead of them with racing heartbeat. Two solid tree trunks were lying criss-crossing the path with their branches freshly cut off. The road was blocked. ¡®This is an ambush.¡¯ Martha steered her horse to move slightly forward, standing guard before the cart. Whistles were already sounding off in the distance with hustles and loud human voices in immediate vicinity. The truth was, an obstacle of this size would not pose any difficulty for her warhorse. She could just storm through riding - which would also be the safest option. However, the ones driving the cart - they couldn''t. And jumping over while carrying three peoples on his back were too much even for Cavalier. ''Chatty, try to to make a turn and drive back''. ''Huh, you think how many times I rode the cart before? This is, like, the first! Is it even possible to do so on such a narrow road?!'' ''Do you want to die?'' Cursing, servant girl started to slowly and awkwardly shifting horses in circular motion. A somewhat pale face peeked out of the cart and immediately shrank back, shutting window tight. Young lady of Sheyield has obviously taken note of the situation as well. Martha slowly paced as well to match cart retreat. ''The one''s who are blocking the path: I am an officer of Imperial military on active duty!'' ''Make this barricade undone immediately or face the consequences!'' That being said, even if by some sort of miracle her adversary would really removed the trunks, she still wouldn''t pass there and be a sitting duck at other''s mercy. Currently, running back was the only thing on her mind and Martha was just buying time for their inexperienced coach. ''Ehhh, a woman?! What have you been drinking instead of ya¡¯ mother''s milk? You are almost as tall as my old man!'' A burly man appeared from the side of barricade accompanied by loud voices of laughter and sally jokes. ''I can''t believe we actually got someone on this god forsaken track!'' ''Aya, if only Boss wouldn''t have been wounded we could have taken the main road for ourselves. Imagine, how nice that would be instead!'' ''Now, now, let''s be content with what we have, gentlemen! At least we got two chicks right here!'' Gesturing for his mates, who were swarming out from the bushes, man moved his eyes from Chatty to Martha back and forth and licked his lips. Knight grit her teeth and brandished sword in a wide swing to scary off some of the more brave bandits. This didn''t make any sense though. No bandit''s haven was located near the city of Nardh. And no band would be so bold to even try. Mindless beasts had their tides and could migrate as they will, but people who lived on murder and robbery - they had to be careful where they tread. It was beyond stupidity for them to appear this close to a city where stationed military would make short work of them within a day''s notice. ''Faster!'' ''Im trying, al''right!'' Chatty, her face pale as a ghost, was already scared out of her mind as she frantically lashed at horses, who were both confused by so many people suddenly surrounding them and coach''s violent outbursts. ''Gotcha!'' A cart has finally straightened on the way back and started to move. ''Ah, not so fast, girlie'' A group of men also appeared from the opposite side of barricade with their bows nicked, blocking carriage¡¯s retreat. Not saying another word they have released a stream of arrows felling both horses. Few of them have even hit Cavalier and helplessly scattered from armorplates covering his sides. An attempt to retreat has thus failed. The following events quickly took turn for the worse. A skinny bandit jumped on the coachman seat kicking Chatty away. She actually didn''t even try to resist - be it out of fear or sense of futility. Three or four pairs of hands caught here on the fall from carriage and hastily started to tear her clothes and grope her, while accompanied by whistles and catcalling. This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it. Martha could only helplessly glance at girl¡¯s direction and pay no further heed as she herself was currently under the siege of five people armed with long wooden pikes who were poking at Cavalier under the coverage of shooting arrows. What was going on though? This was a way to counter riders employed by actual warfare! Back in the coachman position skinny bandit hacked at the frontal window and peeked inside. ''Aya, there is another woman, boys!'' Next, he released a piercing shriek and fall on his back, as fine decorative dagger was stabbed deep into his eye socket. ''Bitch, come out yourself or we''ll set the cart on fire!'' Seeing, surprisingly, a first casualty on his side burly man felt heating anger and decided to end this farce. He took a pike himself and moved onto Martha. The way he saw it this staunch knight was the crux and backbone of carriage party resistance. As soon as he unmounted and seized her the fight would inevitably die down. As for what would have come next, the man could only swallow his saliva in vivid anticipation. Wary of this new opponent Martha backed down to the trees, protecting the rear. She was only defending till now, measuring the assault''s potential and finding mishaps in their formation and defence. ''This is doable!'' - She reaffirmed herself, strengthening her grip. Then she suddenly burst forth onto the burly man. ''Ehhh?'' - surprised, bandit raised his improvised spear to pierce into rapidly approaching horse. It was to his further shock, however, that Martha has released her left hand holding the reins and used it to catch the pike in its stabbing motion. The man felt like his weapon was nailed into the stone. Next it was pushed forcefully to the side and bandit, who couldn¡¯t even release it in time, followed, losing balance and stumbling awkwardly. A sound like from a smashing fruit basket rang out and man''s neck and what¡¯s above were all gone in a clean hit. While this bandit has identified Martha to be a pillar for the other party, Martha has done the same. She was hiding her strength and skill, patiently waiting for the other to deliver himself before her. Panting, she raised her sword covered in blood and gore. ''Who''s next?!'' Bandit''s momentum was now gone. Jumping off the cart, leaving almost naked Chatty, they started to retreat into the forest sending scared looks at this towering black knight. Cowering and tearing squire had crawled behind the knight. ''Marthaa, Marthaa'' - she was only bawwing. Leaving messed up cart, carefully observing the place, has also left the ruined carriage Lady Celine. Martha briefly looked at her and, confirming that despite being deathly pale girl didn''t have any injuries, only nodded at her. It was at that time... ''A Paladin...not quite right, hmmm'' A lazy and thick male voice travelled from afar. ''A nominee then?'' A tall man with a crumbled posture, his right hand falling down helplessly along his body in bloody bandages, emerged from the forest. ''Boss!'' ''It''s Boss!'' ''Let''s see how you sing now, bitches!'' Man paid no attention to bandit''s happy shouts and stared at Martha, a broad smile on his handsome face. ''Am I right?'' Martha''s mind shook. The fact that man was able to measure her strength in a glance signified that he could only be stronger than her and not weaker. However this was not what has shocked her into disbelief. What the man was dressed into was a worn down, torn in multiple place, mudded - but, still, nevertheless - a genuine military uniform! ''Why?...'' However, before she even finished her question she stopped herself. This wound, this ambush on the side road, the stranginess and familiarity of bandit''s motions. Everything led to a quite simple conclusion. ''You are a deserter!'' ''What''s more, you are a Champion rank!'' Man has widened his smile till his eyes turned into satisfied crescents. ''Correct!'' This was a Champion! Knights had Paladins and usual foot soldiers had Champions. The Imperial military groomed and trained the first so it was evident that most rankers in the army were Paladins. But once in a while people on the frontlines were able on their own to accumulate enough experience and skill to stand their ground even against these chosen. Such warriors growing from the ground bottom among the weeds were called Champions. Once Empire took note of the Champion they would offer him a suitable office and income, changing his entire life prospects. However, more often than not, because they weren''t, unlike Paladins, shown Imperial kindness when they were cannon fodder, these people had questionable loyalty. Still, abandoning the post and deserting army was a crime worthy of most severe of punishments. Empire might ignore an odd bandit troupe in the vicinities of human city, but if it was confirmed to be a deserter - a whole another story! Military would stop at nothing to chase down and make an example of traitor. As if anticipating an obvious question man sighed. ''The news...probably have not made it yet?'' ''There has been a major change at the frontlines'' ''Perhaps, the whole war course will now be set adrift'' He glanced at his crippled arm. ''My regiment has been wiped out. What choice did i have?...To follow into their demise? I have only recently minted Champion ranks and didn''t even enjoy my new life...'' Man then straightened his back and stared at Martha, his eyes narrowed. ''Enough. I planned to rest here for a day or two then make a beeline to south border'' ''I naturally can not leave you, ladies, to your own devices now that you are privy to my circumstances'' ''Guess what? Help me and my brothers here recuperate while we are on our march to the south'' ''Then, i can assure you, you will be released once we reach the border!'' Man laughed then. ''That, of course, if you don¡¯t find our treatment to your liking.'' At this line his peers, who were cautiously peeking out of the woods, cracked in greasy laugh as well. ''Boss is the best, you know!'' ''War hero is every girl''s dream! He gestured for silence and asked in a calm voice. ''Well, do you surrender or not?'' At some moment Martha has felt a small hand tightly grasping her wrist. A hand was cold but firm in its grip. Martha lowered her eyes and met the gaze of Baron''s daughter. The girl didn''t want to surrender. She wanted to fight. She wanted to resist. She wanted to emerge victorious and pay back for the humiliation. Perhaps, thought Martha, her young heart has been suppressed for too long and now was finally looking for a chance to make a stand. She then turned to her other companion. Chatty, this lively girl, was completely broken. She was hugging her knees, elbows tightly pressed to her hips and hands covering face. Some random rags assembled together were hiding her trembling full body. The weakest in mind among them all, Martha could easily imagine what would be the future of this unfortunate girl if they really surrendered. But could they win? While wounded, and not wounded lightly at that, this was still full-fledged Champion, a combatant full rank above hers! Moreover, from how this man carried himself and how his warped personality seeped into his every word, she could feel that he was not simple. Still, she fought Paladins before. Commander of one of the regiments she rode with on the frontlines were a Champion. Then again, she was gifted and she had riding advantage. She would fight. Appearance of the Hero (Part 2) ''Hold!'' Seeing the change in knight''s posture enemy warrior frantically gestured her to stop. ''Don''t be too rush, fair lady!'' ''You see, injured as I am I would like to not overexert myself!'' ''Oh? And what is your suggestion then?'' ''First, take a look!'' Champion waved over to his fellows who have already picked their weapons and assembled around in a wide circle with their bows raised and ready. ''I won''t go as far as to proclaim that I''m absolutely sure about winning against you¡'' ''But don''t you agree that at least holding you, entangling you, should be within this Champion humble abilities?'' Martha frowned. The enemy was obviously weaving some sort of plot as he spoke but what he said this far really made sense. Moreover, hold her? She was positive that if he really went out this person was capable of threatening her life, not merely blocking her advance. ''Aaand'' - Champion continued - ''As we fight I can''t help but wonder if these brothers will just patiently watch or - perhaps - try to contribute with their bows?'' ''Sure, you will be able to withstand some crude shooting with your fancy armor and lightning movement skills of a knight'' ''But what about those charming angels by your side?'' ''And if you do manage that - for how long?'' This was another fair point. Collected young lady Celine aside, it was questionable whether Chatty who were still sobbing in embryo position would actually behave at that time or if she would break into a fit and complicate things further. ''I am prepared, and so are they.'' Yet she didn''t move. ''Ah, that thing with knights again. You just have to be stubborn!'' ''Listen, I''m explaining this to you precisely because I''d really like to avoid this kind of thing!'' ''Forget my injury, these brothers over here would condemn me to death if I had let such fairies be disfigured and scarred'' ''Even more! - Yes, girl, I''m aware - We are so close to the city, why would I risk dragging things out?'' ''So?'' ''So!'' - he raised his left, healthy arm, - ''Three moves!'' ''Let us do it like this, lady, I''ll take your three moves!'' ''If I manage it with ease - well, this should make it obvious that holding you won''t be necessary, right?'' ''I''ll just plain slaughter you!'' ''So you would surrender in that case, alright? Not that it matters for me if I''m really that stronger, haha'' ''And what about if I''mto come out on top in this test of skill?'' ''Why, that''s obvious as well! Since fighting a stronger opponent will only add to my worries, as I have declared before, I''ll just drop the matter and let you pass!'' ''Just like that?'' ''Just like that!'' Martha felt weird about this suggestion. ''Then what about us telling on you as soon as we come to city walls?'' The person shrugged his shoulders. ''This is naturally a risk but if you are shown in our bout to be so strong, I wouldn''t be able to shut you down any time soon anyway'' ''And then I will be risking being caught right in this place, without even a chance to flee'' ''I¡¯m just managing my risks here, girl'' Martha carefully thought the deal over. It went without saying that her enemy probably didn''t even consider the possibility of losing and was aiming to cut things short to avoid the hassle and dangers of military involvement, just like he said.Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings. However this was also an opportunity. If Martha could capitalize on this Champion underestimating her and ended up delivering fatal strike herself - this, once again, would behead the opposition and open a path to life. Still, something felt off. There was no way this shrewd person was really frank and open about his motives. Seeing as the knight has started to seriously ponder about the matter Champion began to speak again. ''Ah, one moment! Given that you are mounted and I am not, wouldn''t you consider it to be against the test agenda if we fought like that?'' ''Could you, perhaps, jumpdown from your horse first?'' Jump down?...Sure a skilled Champion wouldn''t finda rider to be too much of a trouble? And to actually try to make bargain out of it? Then the sudden realization hit her. So this was it! The thing this person was actually afraid of! He feared that Martha would just abandon the notion of defending her companions and run through the ranks of enemy straight to the city. Given that she didn''t need to waste her strength covering girls and stay in place near them she would make it to the stationed nearby military faster than in any mentioned scenarios. This was indeed a real threat to this deserter! Struck with an enlightenment, young lady Celine by knight¡¯s side clutched tightly thin dagger she had already retrieved from pierced skull of a slain bandit. Being rational and smart in her studies she immediately understood that this was indeed the best way. However, Martha have smiled wryly. She wouldn''t even consider this option. ''I will not step down from Cavalier. This is my advantage and I will not forego it'' ''If you don''t like it, feel free to attack, I will be sure to fight with my everything'' ''However, if otherwise, I can take up your suggestion'' ''Don''t worry I''ll only use this fine steed to fight and kill you in three moves and won''t run from my comrades here'' ''This, I shall swear on my name as one of Roseblades!'' Sure, this person expected her to refuse. He just wanted to confirm her character and intentions. To this, Martha could only sigh. The warrior clapped his left hand against his hip excitedly. ''Fine! What a fine woman! Roseblade! I knew you had outstanding origins!'' ''Ah, I wish I could return the honor and swear to uphold my part of bargain as well but I have no fancy name.'' ''See, I am a bastard, my lady! I know my father but he doesn''t know me!'' ''Very well, let me measure your skill, knight!'' With this Championgrabbed somewhere from the bushes short and broad sword and slowly approached Martha. However, what was the meaning of this? Such a weapon, good for defending but not having enough reach to even pass the difference of height provided by presence of warhorse, couldn''t possibly threaten her life, right? Did he really intend to just take three moves defending? Martha shook her head. She would ponder about these things as they would come. Hesitating in battle meant defeat! In an instant blurry motion she spurred the horse and within the moment arrived before cautiously advancing Champion. Cavalier rose up with his forelegs lifted and menacing over the opponent''s head. Then, carrying a terrifying impulse Martha swung down her sword with a loud shout: ''First strike!'' Against this two-pronged attack the enemy warrior first ducked and rolled to the side and then raised his sword in a frantic cover. However, the loss of a stable ground provided by hasty escape and the fact that he held his weapon with only one hand put him in a sever disadvantage. Their weapons met and after a momentary clash the short and broad sword was forced down opening a collar bone for a fierce stab. Champion grunted and then performed another roll, now backwards, looking darkly at his mangled flesh. ''Nice move'' - he said grimly, his laughs and smiles gone. Martha, however, was disinterested in this person¡¯s minute changes of expression. She felt really good about thisattack earlier, it appeared coming from a very sweet spot so she expected if not a fatal wound then lopping enemy¡¯s arm at the least. Surprisingly, this person didn¡¯t even lose his fighting ability. Such was the strength of a champion! Unwilling to let her enemy a single opening to recover Martha reined Cavalier again and arrived upon a man in same two-pronged attack again. For it worked once and proved effective! ¡®Second strike!¡¯ Champion cursed and thought for a moment to defend himself again. However the instance he raised his eyes upon warhorse towering stature and remembered astonishing impact of the first strike he had instantly dropped the notion. Instead, he gripped his short sword tight, tucked handle onto his chest and lunged under the Cavalier who was already descending his forelegs where this annoying little human had just stood. There, pressing himself on the muddy ground, gazing upon the sleek muscular body of a warsteed, where armor plates covering the sides were hanging all down, with toned andpulsing belly of the beast fully exposed, the warrior clenched his teeth and sprung forth in a stabbing motion. Cavalier body shook and astonished gleam passed his eyes soon to lose focus. His enormous body fell to the ground with a loud thud in wild convulsions and would have buried the enemy underneath if Champion hadn¡¯talreadyslipped away leaving his blade in horse gut. Martha, who had jumped down the moment Cavalier lost his balance, felt her heart tighten as she glanced at this proud and loyal animal who served her for years. However, the best she could do right now was to finish off their common enemy and avenge her partner. With this, she readied her sword once again. Suited for the mounted battles this huge weapon was now unsupported in her hands and yet, she was holding it without any strain. Champion looked at his left hand still trembling after the recent exchange, deep frown on his face. He then bellowed to his accomplices scattered around: ''Weapon!'' Someone hastily delivered another crude broadsword and Champion had just reset his stance when devilish black figure clad in graphite armor who was actually taller than him appeared right above his head with already descending sword. ''Third strike!'' Enemy warrior raised his weapon to defend and it was immediately pushed back into his own chest. Then he was pushed back again. And then some more. Until he was smashed against the ground with his body half-buried into the earth and mountain-like pressure stillsquashinghim deeper in the mud. Blood was streaming from the corners of his mouth and bones all over his body were clearly cracking with snapping noises. And yet this person was smiling - for he still held his blade! Martha''s sword, unstoppable as it seemed, was still separated from warrior''s flesh by this unyielding piece of steel. He didn''t let go! He endured! Champion parted his lips with a dry laugh to say something when his expression suddenly froze. Because at this moment Martha had readjusted her grip and shouted, her voice resounding as clap of thunder: ''Fourth strike!'' Appearance of the Hero (Part 3) ''Bitch, you swore on your family name!'' Champion hollered with angry shout as his face distorted in rage and fear. ''Good! Good! Aren''t you a vicious one?'' ''Seems like you''ve been around, girl!'' The warrior was not able to defend against this sudden blow and only somewhat cushioned it by twisting body in weird fashion. A gashing wound was opened on his head and sword almost fell from his weakened hand. Martha drew herself closer and pushed her armored knee on Champion''s chest rendering him immovable. Now that fourth strike has come, more were bound to follow. This person''s life was in her hands and Martha didn''t feel any wish to grant mercy, only sorrow and image of collapsed Cavalier in her mind. In a dull and unhurried pace, she raised her blade for a finishing blow, when from the corner of her eyes she caught a slight, almost unbelievable movement. For it had come from Champion''s disfigured, helplessly hanging, supposedly destroyed right hand. As if in slow motion with widening eyes she saw how this hand jerked in a frisky snake-like action and numerous little dots appeared before her. She threw her head to the side in an instinctive attempt to protect her eyes, and black dots which, as they moved close appeared to be slim black darts, clunked off her helm. However, still, some of them have sunk deeply into the openings of helm visor leaving sharp pain in Martha''s skin. What was even worse was that she immediately felt some sort of numbing agent spreading to her neck, ears, throat. With a stiffened breath she tried to nevertheless complete her swing and end things at least at mutual destruction. However her blade was stopped this time with a bare hand. ''Enough'' ''You got no strength left in you now'' Champion spat on the ground, grimly watching pieces of broken teeth and blood to seep down into the dust. His numerous wounds were bleeding and streaks of white could even be seen in some places where bones were exposed. He then waved somewhere to the side. Surprisingly, his band has long surrounded Lady Celine and Chatty, smug smirks on their faces, while holding knives to girl''s necks. Martha smiled wryly as she crumbled. Schemes upon schemes, all this time she was dancing on her enemy¡¯s palm. Actually, he didn''t even need to resort to what he has initially planned - that is to lure her away from women and use them as hostages.Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. He actually managed to defeat her alone. As poison spread through her blood Martha didn''t lose consciousness. She felt her helm removed with appraising whistles from the male crowd and then had her pulse checked. As she lied there on her back she stared into low hanging sky filled with ominous dark clouds. It didn''t take long before the rain started. As her armor was being undone Martha heard people talking. They were asking whether ''Boss'' was alright. He cursed and spat. And then she felt her body being picked up and then carried further into the forest as ''Boss'' was leaving the rest of the group behind. They, however, were not paying it any mind. Like patches of black carrion birds they surrounded two scared women, tugging at their clothes - or what have remained of them - and hairs. A strong will and some sort of decision were gleaming inside the black-haired girl''s unyielding look. As for the red-haired one her eyes were not able to stop for a second frantically jumping around as if in search of someone. Her lips, thin without blood, were trembling as she were mumbling something. In a sudden surge of emotions she regained her clarity and stared far at the distance where naked tall womanly figure was carried on their enemy back. ''Marthaaaa'' - she cried - ''Marthaaaa!'' There was a wordless request in this shout, a beg for a help perhaps. And as their looks met and red-haired girl saw the blank and at the same time apologizing expression in the knight¡¯s eyes she shouted again. ''Martha!!!'' A deep resentment was evident in her voice. As Marthafinally faded into the shadows of the thicket, the girl shouted again. This time she didn''t call for anyone andscreamed just from pain. Her another companion could only helplessly watch as she herself was dragged away to the side, desperately hiding in her body her only hope, the fine thin blade. Technically speaking, things should have been easier for Chatty. Unlike the proud daughter of aristocratic family this flirtatious young woman was not a stranger to affairs of adults. However, among this amount of starving lusting animals this would prove of a little advantage. Her voluptuous chest, thick thighs, however, - these things have assured that she instantly became the center of crowd¡¯s attention unlike scrawny and slim black-haired girl. As their unrest hands groped and touched her everywhere, Chatty felt overwhelmed with a storm of dreadful emotions. Fear of unknown. Sense of irreversibility. Feeling that she would never be able to think about herself as ''self'' anymore. Never to associate herself with this ruined existence. Never being able to reconcile with herself. A monstrosity that she always felt as part of distant world where people were devouring each other and had nothing to do with the secure everyday life of a commoner - this enormous monstrosity was slowly and irresistibly crawling into her own life. At first she bit where she could. Then her teeth were smashed out. Then she tried to scratch but her fingers were broken. She gurgled and screamed as man after man were forcing themselves upon her. In what was a mess of mushy noises and slurry speech, perhaps, one could make out her words. ''Someone'' ''Anyone'' ''Please'' ''Save me'' ''I beg you'' ''God'' ''Anyone'' ''Please'' Then all sound has passed into the rain. In a simple monotonous motion a ruined beauty drowned in earth, rain and dirt were raising her hand and delivering light, void of any strength slaps with a mangled palm to another, next-in-order man. ''Slap'' The bandit would shake his head annoyingly and brush her hand away. Then she would slap again. At some moment she slapped and the brushing motion didn''t come. Cocking her swelling head in surprise, girl slapped some more. As any resistance has parted from her hand, she saw, astonished, that bandit''s head had slid off in a silky-smooth motion from his neck. His corpse then fell to the side revealing tall figure in the rain. A man clad in black robes were standing there with black shoulder-long hair covering his expression. Surrounding him were lying bodies, some of them stabbed, some of them cut, some of them gasping for the last breath. Almost not being able to believe this, girl have extended her hand gurgling with her ruined throat: ''H-Hero!...'' And then, in an even more unbelievable fashion, as her eyes bulged from the shock, she felt a thick hand strongly pushingon her chest. And then pressing her down back in the dirt. And - in already painfully familiar sensation - a burden of a male body sinking into her, with unhurried motions. Back and forth. Maidens Heart Off to the side, Celine watched with bated breath as man was making his rounds on Chatty body. As Celine herself lay there, thin streaks of blood were running down her leg.Her frail frame was half-buried under the staunch bandit who earlier took a liking to her. Yet, the bandit''s eyes were long listless and still. He was dead, knife wounds in his throat, and lungs, and kidneys. At first young lady Celine planned to take advantage of the ruckus and slip into the bush, making run for her life.A criminal that had approached her was a dim guy who soon carelessly lost himself in a pleasure. Initially shocked to near-death, girl eventually recovered and decisively seized the opportunity. However, as soon as this black-robed man entered the scene Celine felt herself almost paralyzed. Friend or foe, his intentions yet unclear, he moved with indiscernible motions quickly putting down more than dozen of bandits. At that timeshe was overwhelmed with hope and almost happily jumped out, when the man has proceeded to force himself on Chatty. Celinefroze, unblinking, her heart racing and thoughts in a mess. Time flew. As muffled groans of pain from the woman died out, man stood. He grabbed the girl by her red hair and retrieved a short hunting knife from his waist. Then, with wide steps, raising splashes of mud and gore, he walked to the nearest bandit still lying there, his fate unknown. Man grabbed bandit''s head by the chin and parted it from the neck with a practised slice. He then moved to the next, mumbling: ''So many rats. What is the Marshal doing?'' ''Has the western border already fallen?'' It didn''t matter if the enemy already had severe wounds from previous encounters, if he were missing half of his body, or if there was a nasty gaping wound just near his heart. Man would raise the knife, make a swing, then wipe the blade off the corpse''s cloth. None were spared. Actually there were some odd cases where the bandit would suddenly squirm and scream in the man''s hands, trying to resist - albeit futile - or sprang into motion and tried to run away. Apparently, they were playing dead, these clever ones. The result, though, was once again predictable. Neither from Martha, nor from a nameless Champion has Celine felt this pressure of peerless domination that man was spreading around in his wake. Academy had its fair share of ranked warriors given how many young ladies were in attendance there. And yet, among them as well, none would be this man''s match. Man would soon come to where Celine lay. Taking in mind all previous events, it didn''t take much to foresee her near future. She either would have her neck severed. Or the next option. Celine didn''t hesitate anymore. She took dagger and cut the corners of her mouth to produce some blood from it. She then positioned blade against her pink undeveloped chest and pressed it hard, enduring pain and seizing any further movement. After a while the man approached Celine as well. He didn''t slow his pace or turn head and yet as he passed the young lady his eyes held imperceptible glint of ridicule. Ignoring both the girl and the corpse on top, he proceeded then to the deeper parts of the forest, where earlier Martha was carried by a champion. *** There, under the thick crown of a tree laced with rain drops, two naked bodies lay. One, was a slim and toned shape of a young woman, who had her wrists tied to the trunk. Another appeared to be a trained and muscular male torso with numerous leaves sticking to his bloodied wounds. A what has happened to be torso''s head - also was to be found around, a look of disbelief plastered in Champion''s eyes. Hearing branches snap, woman raised her face in a crown of golden hair, wet from all the pour. Unable to see clearly, she shook her head to remove clinging locks from a forehead, and streams of rain water ran down her body, glistening and enhancing the charming curves of young woman''s figure. Martha stared at this man, who slowly advanced dragging Chatty by the hair. Judging from her own first-hand experience, Martha could very much imagine how this person treated poor servant girl. However, she didn''t see Lady Celine accompanying him. ''Was she spared...killed?'' Man threw Chatty close to Martha. Then he crouched. At this time Martha, who earlier were too shocked by the rapid changes and had only recently recovered, could finally observe this person''s profile. In his squatting pose, with black garments that looked neither smooth nor rugged but somehow repelled the rain, man looked like a crow.Shoulder-long black hair and slightly squinted dark eyes, along with aquiline nose and thin lips served to further reinforce the impression. His face had two deep folds running from the eye''s corners all the way down to his jaw, making him look like a man in his middle-thirties.He didn''t have a large build, and his arms, rather slim, didn''t look like hands of a fighter at all.Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions. Yet as Martha summoned to the memory the instance this person appeared before her for the first time, she also remembered that feeling of immediate suppression he has casted upon her.A champion, his body lax and defenseless after he had earlier released himself without care into captured knight, took it even worse. From the moment his eyes widened in shock and until his head was lopped off this seasoned warrior just lay there prostrated like a fish on the chopping block. Martha broke out of her reverie as man bent further into his crouching posture. He looked over Chatty disfirgured limbs, her ruined mouth and bruised scalp. He then traced female squire''s body with his hand, clad in black glove. ''...Fourteen. Ah. Fifteen.'' He glanced at Martha and mumbled under his breath: ''Compared, this one had it much easier'' These words instantly sent chills down knight''s spine. She herself had endured two assaults in succession and felt already ruined down to every cell. Chatty, this lively girl... Man poked with his hand, pressed on young woman''s belly, then took Chatty''s pulse. He then shook his head and procured short hunting knife. He used it to cut Martha''s wrists free and as she immediately tried to cover her naked body, thrusted the knife towards her, handle first. ''Someone you know?'' And then without even waiting for an answer: ''You do it.'' With deep astonishment Martha gazed upon a man as the sudden realization creeped into her mind. ''Did he mean to kill Chatty?'' ''Me?'' With the right hand, while covering her ample chest with the left, Martha took the knife in a daze. Finishing fallen horses, even comrades, was nothing new on the battlefield. The knight herself had some dark experineces in this area. But Chatty...Were her state really beyond remedy? Martha took a more careful look. Girl''s face received the most damage, purple and swollen all over her eyes and mouth. Between her torn lips no teeth could be seen and even her nose was broken and dislocated in weird angle. However, apart from crashed arms and legs, the girl didn''t have any surface wounds. Perhaps, with the proper medical care? Martha hesitated. Man didn''t glance at knight as he continued: ''Ribs too. She also lost blood'' ''What, are you a doctor?'' Indeed, Martha had only some superficial knowledge in this area. A sudden outrageous thought popped in her mind, though. From his practised actions before, it was evident that man himself was not short of medical expertise. However, she quickly dismissed the thought. Was a man himself not the part of reason Chatty ended in her sorry states? One-fifteenth of it, at least. Reaching a conclusion Martha readied a knife as she brought it to Chatty beaten chest. ''Chatty...'' She held her breath and mustered all strength in resolute stab. However the knife didn''t pierce ruined girl''s flesh. At least not in the chest. What blade has sunk into was a distorted bloodied palm full of dislocated fingers. Trembling and dripping with even more blood this hand struggled and resisted, pushing Martha''s arm away. In a coarse and unpleasant voice, with a visible effort, the girl hissed: ''Get...the hell...away...from me!'' She pushed shocked Martha away, blade still hanging from her palm, and turned over to the crouched man. He watched over two women''s struggle indifferently, no expression reflected in his serene eyes. ''You...'' ''I want to live...'' ''I don''t need anything'' ''I''ll survive'' ''Just dont kill...me...on my own...'' ''I will survive this!'' Still indifferent, man extended his hand and swiftly retrieved the knife from girl''s wound. He glanced at it and then at servant girl again, seemingly wavering about what to do next. Fire lit in girl''s eyes, covered with red, now all dark and muddy, hair. Then she pounced on the man. He didn''t take any action to defend himself and only met assault with scorn in his eyes, while levelling the blade to finally take the girl''s life. However, it was then, for the first moment, that man''s expression has revealed glimpses of what could be called a surprise. For this little woman didn''t try to attack him. ''Don''t...'' As she kept babbling with her ruined mouth girl tried to hug man''s legs. ''This is what you like, right?...'' With her mangled hands she brought herself closer to man''s crotch, trying to make his clothes undone. However without a single functioning finger, with her palm stabbed, with her joints dislocated, what could she really do? The girl just helplessly squirmed there, unable to achieve anything and yet refusing to let go. ''I still can...'' Man put his hand on Chatty''s head and after a momentary pause pushed her away. He thenrose up and as his eyes turned serene again, looked over both women in indifference. ''Get dressed.'' *** Man stood to the side waiting for women to collect their things. Where he intended to take them was not revealed and any question would be met with cold detached gaze. Not like any of the women would dare to insist in their inquiry. For a clothing Martha took the outfit left by fallen Champion. Her own undergarments were torn during the savagery before and could no longer be used. She wanted to pick up her fine graphite armor but man has gestured her not to. ''A hassle'' - he said. As for what it would be a hassle to Martha wanted to think no further with mixed emotions of hate, embarassment and even blush, leaving her disgusted with herself. Within Champion''s few possessions there also was a miniature arbalest and pack of thin darts, each of them laced with glistening poison. As Martha held this weapon in her hand she couldn''t help but hesitate. However, going back to this man''s performance she ultimately dropped the notion. The confidence with which he has left women for a while to their own devices spoke volumes and was also likely a form of a test. There have been another thing that attracted her attention. A fine little pendant with image of beautiful mature woman had been cast into white gold. The only artwork on pendant itself were two gravured words ''My Elise''. After a minute thought Martha took this memento as well. She also collected some clothing for Chatty, but servant girl only pushed her offerings away. She gathered some rags on her own and stuck to man like a dog. As trio was leaving the place in a silence, Marthamoved in the rear, her eyes searching the grounds. It a distant corner with a sudden surge of hope she noticed lank female body lying underneath a male''s corpse, her head surprisingly intact. However the glints of hope went off immediately as Martha took notice of an ominous blade seated in young woman''s chest. Martha hung her head and murmured in a soft voice: ''Lady Celine...you forgive me too.'' With this, the party finally left. *** The rain has seized its murky veil and sun glittered on the lavish green of the forest. Flies began to assemble in clouds on the field, preparing for auspicious feast on corpses. On a snow-white leg of a young girl a slick streak of dried blood has suddenly broken its fine line as the leg moved. Girl sat up, slowly recovering her posture, and pulled the dagger out of what was painful but, cleverly covered, superficial wound. She then threw up and lay back on the grass, unmoving and staring into the sky where sun was passing its course like it did on any other day. Lullaby Within a room draped in heavy folds of red silk, flowing down from the walls, three men were seated around the table, dimly lit with candles light. The one positioned at the head was clad in military uniform. Man had upright back and his eyes radiated the willpower of a male in his prime. As for the others present, they were also dressed in army outfit and took the rest of the chairs around the table. ''Let us proceed to the matters of Eastern Border then.'' Man''s expression had a visible cast of annoyance as he made this announcement. ''General Tarta?'' With a bow person to the left from the leader rose from his seat and reported. ''Compared to the last week''s disposition things have calmed down a little, my lord.'' ''9th, 10th, 11th regiment have all encountered ambushes of various intense but persevered and have been currenly reinforced so there is no imminent danger'' General frowned. ''It''s just that 8th regiment has missed the due time to make a report.'' ''8th regiment?'' - man in the lead had thoughtful look for a moment. -''They have been guarding the pass in Ceasefire Forest, if I remember things correclty.'' ''Lord of Yellow is well informed.'' - General Tarta nodded respectfully. ''Have you dispatched someone to check then?'' ''Naturally, however both messengers have not returned as well.'' The other officer present in the meeting broke in a chuckle. ''Losing regiment and then some more on top of it, your battle genius have once again widened my horizons Tarta.'' General Tarta did not offer any retort but his hand moved to the handle of fine rapier hanging from his waist. ''Ease, Tarta'', - man in charge waved his hand calmly.- ''What esteemed Silvester says makes sense, we trully suffered this time.'' ''Then how about this, why don''t you pick your famed Winged Brigade and help us out, Silvester?'' ''We would be most grateful for your guidance!'' An officer who had earlier ridiculed General Tarta immediately had change of expression and stood up abruptly. ''A mere Colour dares to command Emperor''s Guard? Have I missed your coronation, good lord?'' ''Mm, it''s not like I am ordering you, Silvester.'' ''However, tell me, if you are not going to cooperate with regular army from time to time then what is the point in you being situated in my camp?'' ''It has been a month or so since your men and horses have been freeloading off me, you know.'' ''Wouldn''t you think it''s time for your people to earn their rent?'' Silvester, however, refused to give in. ''Emperor''s Guard will be dispatched only under direct command of His Majesty.'' ''If you have any qualms go petition the Emperor himself!'' Man tapped the table slightly. ''I might just do this, Silvester. However the timing is not right...Emperor has departed to Northern Seas to request their assistance already.'' ''Still...'' Man took a pause. ''I wonder if the Empress will turn cold shoulder to me if I approach her about this matter?'' Silvester eyes widened in disbelief. ''You...the rumors were right after all!'' ''And even admitting it so brazenly!'' ''Admitting what?'' - man stretched lazily, -''Speak openly, Silvester.'' ''Ah, but be mindful please, lest you slander Her Majesty and commit High treason.'' ''I''ll naturally have your head right away in that very moment.'' The person who was previously addressed as leader of Winged Brigade stared at the Lord of Yellow angrily, his knuckles white and balled into fists. General Tarta hastily moved to his commander''s side, taking caution were Silvester to lose it. However in the end Emperor''s Guard captain only turned on his heels and left the room in wide strides.Support the creativity of authors by visiting the original site for this novel and more. ''Should I now reinforce the outpost in Ceasefire Forest, commander?'' ''No need, Silvester''s no fool and with Emperor absent he won''t antagonize me to the bitter end.'' ''...If you say so, my lord.'' Commander then took his coat from chair and stood up. ''General Tarta, I''m leaving the other matters to you. I''ll be going back to the capital for the rest of the month.'' General Tarta saluted and stepped aside. As his direct supperior was leaving the room General Tarta stood there with his head bowed, wry smile on his lips. Marshal Sunk, Lord of Yellow, thirty sixth in this year, was truly a gifted man. *** Seven long days has passed since the accident on the road and currently Martha couldn¡¯t make heads or tails out of her situation. This person who had kidnapped her and Chatty still rarely talked to them and didn¡¯t give any clues as to what fate was awaiting girls in the future. If she were to say that she was a prisoner that wouldn¡¯t be quite right. Her freedom and movement weren¡¯t actually restricted. Well, during the day, that is. There were no ropes, no shackles, they were not searched, and even that weapon Martha had looted from the Champion¡¯s corpse was still in her possession. But still she had somehow felt that running was not an option. This feeling, at first vague and inexplainable, was soon proved to be on spot as Chatty, who has appeared strangely loyal to their kidnapper since the beginning, tried to escape on fourth day. The girl had wandered deep into forest while man was absent and didn¡¯t come back until the dark. When the night fell the man had returned as he usually did, carrying some dead animals. He quietly glanced around, slowing his gaze on Martha and then searching with his eyes for servant girl. He then sat down, skinned the animals and unhurriedly cooked them, while shoving some parts of it towards Martha. Then the man stood up and dispersed into woods. It was not even a whole hour later as man soon appeared again dragging Chatty by hair in an all reminiscent way . Girl was not letting out a sound despite being beaten half to death. The only place spared was her face which was already quite in sorry state since that day of the ambush and has never fully recovered. Naturally, Chatty¡¯s turn was skipped that night. Speaking of nights at first Martha dreaded them, trying her best not to break out in panic attack each time man would stand up and mull over the girls with his stare picking one of them. However she soon grew strangely numb to it. Were it for accumulated stress that was not properly released all this time. Or because her body decided to shut down and endure. But Martha really felt like she could manage through this ordeal and started to take it with somewhat indifferent attitude. Same however could not be said about Chatty. Each time it was Chatty¡¯s turn to accompany the man through the night was a time Martha were rendered completely unable to sleep. The servant girl¡¯s huffing, loud pants and emotional moans would tore the silence and continue without breaks until the early hours of the morning. At the start Martha felt anger and disgust towards Chatty who appeared so welcoming towards their kidnapper and so accustomed to carnal pleasures. She herself had been resisting any notions of finding comfort in night¡¯s experiences, then why this girl could not? However this emotion had soon subsided as Chatty, who were obviously running out of breath with her voice coarse and vocal cords almost in damaged state, as this girl still kept releasing encouraging screams hours and hours to come. The girl was surviving too. After realising this Martha tried to reestablish communication with Chatty on numerous occasions. She would sometimes save her own food and then offer it to the girl or would try to talk to her when man was out in the woods hunting. However every time Martha was met with firm denial. In fact the eyes with which Chatty were looking at the knight were burning with vivid hatred. She even tried to start a fight few times when Martha approached her. In fact, one night when Martha was lying exhausted because of her ¡®turn¡¯ Chatty even tried to take her life. She was stopped, in the end. But two girls relationship at this point truly seemed irredeemable. With a sigh Martha could only give up. Perhaps pushing all the blame for that mangled toothless face, for disfigured limbs, for crushed and distorted soul on another person who she could at least retaliate against was another way for Chatty to cope with all this. As they moved farther into forest they have passed numerous battlefields. There were signs of combat everywhere and man took longer and longer hours trying to hunt for food. Birds and animals alike hastily left this bloody grounds while carrion-consuming vile creatures took their stead. Sometime they would encounter living people. Some of them were clad in Empire uniforms, some of them - in Kingdom¡¯s. At this point the name ¡®Ceasefire Forest¡¯ truly has lost any meaning and this place had become another active war zone. Approaching these people was prohibited. If girls followed the man quietly and soldiers didn¡¯t take notice of them or let them pass in silence - then nothing would happen. However if they were to cry out for help or soldiers would call on their own volition man would spring into action and kill every single one of them. Empire or Kingdom, none would be spared, lying as a headless corpse. Man¡¯s strength had once again astonished Martha as he cut through the ranks of Paladins and Champions alike, unfettered in the slightest. At some point, she was quite sure, they have wiped a Kingdom unit commanded by general ranking officer. Seeing this Martha abandoned any idea of reaching to these people, who were stoically fighting for their country here, and casting doom over them. Chatty, on the other hand, quickly grew fond of this new attraction. As soon as military regiment was spotted she would run out of the woods, stark naked, sobbing and crying, hastily pointing over her back and begging for protection from ¡®brave soldiers, mighty men¡¯. Stationed on these uninhabited lands without women''s warmth for a long time soldiers would immediately grow excited given Chatty¡¯s bountiful chest, even ignoring her now ugly face and numerous other handicaps. They would quickly assemble a rescue party, dive into forest only to never return. Then their encampment would be wiped out as well. Could this still be called coping¡? Martha didn¡¯t know. She felt like the girl was changing, like she was falling down the road of no return. On nights it became quite often that Chatty would push Martha aside when man would end his meal. And then proactively approach him herself. Her acting skills also grew much better and Martha couldn¡¯t really be sure anymore if this was acting at all or certain hint of sweetness was being added into play. And what made Martha not knowing whether to cry or laugh was the look of superiority servant girl would wear then in the morning. Man didn¡¯t seem particularly annoyed by Chatty behaviour and was even somewhat accepting of it, visiting Martha rarer and rarer at nights. Knight¡¯s treatment though didn¡¯t get any worse as she still were getting her share of food and was equally protected from wildlife dangers as they travelled. Like this a month passed as Martha slowly grew accustomed to this new routine and soon was once again able to enjoy meals and her sleep. Her wounds had long healed and skin regained color. With her state recovered Martha was now able to take in her situation and started to plan for future. It was at this point however that she found herself awake in the morning completely alone, with servant girl, man and their belongings all absent. To the side of the knight was neatly packed animal skin with some odd food, rusty sword and firestarter kit. Apart from this there was nothing and noone.
