《Highschool Exorcist》 Chapter 1: A see-through eye Micah has always been an asocial guy. He hasn''t had any friends over at his house since middle school. He is a total shut-in, but that doesn''t bother him. He would have been leveled with the foundation if he took the harsh words at heart, but his level of self-awareness saved him from bullying that would result in otherwise traumatic damage. "I got to go to school now, see you later mom!" Micah waved as he closed the door after him, his eyes travelling around the pathway and the vegetation around it as he walked to school with lofty steps in front of him. "Yo, Micah!" The young man greeted Micah with a smile stretching from the very ends of his face, laying his arm over his shoulders. Micah remained silent before he spoke with a raspy voice, "Let go of me." "What?" He tightens the grip he has on Micah''s neck, "aren''t we friends?" "You''ve never talked with me ever since I got transferred here, and my mom told me to not hang around with gang members. It''s also weird that you''re in this area, you live like on the opposite side of town." "Tch! Gang members, huh? I guess you''re not a smart-ass for no reason, Mike!" "It''s Micah - let go." "Fine fine, Mikey~" "By the way, your breath reeks of cheap alcohol. You should really go to the bathroom before our first class starts." "Wh- really?" He cups his hands close to his mouth and breathes in and out to smell his breath, "I didn''t even notice it, thanks Micah!" They continued walking for a while until they started seeing the roof of the school as they walked up the hill. "." "Oh" He regained his posture before apologizing, "I''m sorry for coming out as a jerk, Mark." "Ah, it''s okay. I am a gang member after all!" "Also, I wanna get to know you" "Out of pity?" "What?" "A bet?" "...Out of pity." "I see." He rubs his eyes as they are still collapsing on themselves, "thank you." "Thank you?" "Yeah. I''m glad I got myself a friend." Mark looks back at him and takes a good look at him before he says, "You''re weird, Micah." "No shit. I''m probably the weirdest guy in class." Mark laughs as he recives a reply he wasn''t expecting to get. Mark picks up his phone and hands it to Micah, saying, "Give me your number, friendo~" Micah, without saying a word, fills in his number and saves it in Mark''s contacts. He pats thanks him before patting him on the back. "Don''t you dare ignore my calls, ''kay?" Micah sighs and nods before Mark runs to his gang in front of school. They depart for the day and don''t hear from each other for the rest of the day. "A friend, hm?" Micah thought to himself. The thought of having a friend brought light into his body and mind; it made him a little happy. The classroom was nearly full with Micah''s peers, chatter filled up the whole room and nobody seemed to notice that Micah entered the classroom. He sat down at his desk and pulled up his phone. "Wait! I forgot to ask him for his number!" He thought to himself again, bothered by the fact that he forgot something as obvious as that. The thought slowly falls off short as the teacher enters the room with her grasp full of books. She placed the books on her desk in front and only held a paper and a pen. She began checking everyone who was absent. "Micah!" "He''s not here--" "Present." Everyone looked back at Micah as if he had come back from the dead. He didn''t pay much attention to them and many of them started losing interest in him as class went on. Micah opened up his desk to see a mail between his books. Curious by the white mail he took out the paper inside and read, "Meet me behind school at the end of the day. I got something important to tell you. -B ?" The message was cursive and every letter was thinly packed next to the others. "This is Bianca''s handwriting!" He thought to himself, cautiously looking to the right. He then saw Bianca, looking at the board in front of them. He was cautious as to not cross eyesight with her if she would look to the side. Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon."Why?" He again thought to himself, "What''s so important that she has to tell me about after school? Is there something wrong with the school project we worked on? Then again, she wouldn''t need to go to the extent of having to wait till the end of the day. This is something else." "Are you daydreaming again, Micah?" The teacher spoke with a shade of frustration in her voice. "Yeah." "Don''t ''Yeah'' me, open up your books and work!" The day went slow for Micah as Mark and Bianca invaded his daydreaming, leaving him unable to concentrate throughout the day. He confronted her during lunch-time in the queue and asked, "What''s so important you have to tell me?" "You''ll have to wait till later~" Her voice was soft and gentle as it landed in his ears. School was over and it was time for Micah to meet up with Bianca behind the school building. As he turned around the last corner of the building he laid his eyes upon Bianca that was leaning against the wall, waiting for him. "Yo." She reacts with a soft smile as he nears her. "There''s something important I must tell you." He replied with silence as he looks at her captivating blue eyes. "I think I like you, Micah!" She shouted with blossom cheeks. His cheeks turned red, embarrassed by the sudden confession. Covering his cheeks with his forearm she closes the gap between them, hugging him tightly. "Is this perhaps a little too quick for you?" "I-It''s all good... I don''t mind it." Her chest pushed against his'' made him more bashful than ever, evading eye contact more than before the hug. "You could''ve just told me this before school... or just at lunch-time." "I could, but I was a little too embarrassed to do that. I''m sorry." "I-It''s okay." He fully wrapped his arms around her back, making her squeak. "You wanna walk me home, Micah?" "S-Sure." They began walking back home to her as the heavy atmosphere soon disappeared. They walked close to each other, both catching a glimpse of each other every now and then when the other one wasn''t looking. "You know, I thought you were going to tell me something about the group project we submitted a few days ago." "I see. I''m satisfied I could prove you wrong, smartass!" She laughed only to be silenced by his smile. His smile wasn''t beamy or spectacular in any way, but seeing him put on such a genuine smile on his face surprised her. They continued giggling a little before they walked up to the driveway of a house. "Micah?" "Yes?" "You never said anything..." "Well... I wasn''t expecting this to happen, but I can tell you that" He gulped, "I like you too." Her cheeks went red and they exchanged numbers before Micah walked back home. "What a crazy day!" He thought to himself as he grabbed the area on his jacket which was on his chest. "Oh--" Micah, without noticing, stepped a ball that repelled him flying against a concrete wall. "What the hell was that!?" At closer inspection, the ball was rough-edged ball made out of amber. He picked it up and spun it around in his hand. "This shit made me fly into the wall? There''s something in it... looks like a tiny walnut. Perhaps I can sell it real expensive..." The pain in his back for the repulsion lingers in the back of his head as he walked back home. "Micah!!" "Mom, what the--" "I was so worried about you, I thought something happened with you!" "I''m good, really! Anyway, I''m not hungry so I''ll go to sleep now." "Sleep well, my king!" He jumped in bed and left the ball on his desk, shortly falling asleep thereafter. "Zzz..." The sun peeked through the windows, waking up with the sun greeting him with a good morning. "Already time to wake up, huh?" He yawned as he rubbed his eyes and walked to the bathroom. "Isn''t a little cold tod-- WHAT THE FUCK!!?" He screamed as the rough amber ball found its way to his right eye, replacing it and leaving no trace of his normal eye. Chapter 2: A depressed soul "You should get ready for school, Micah!" Micah spread his eyelids, baffled from the sight of the amber ball in his eye socket. He stood silent in front of the bathroom mirror before he backed off and ran back to his room. "I need to put on my clothes and leave quick! I could say I''ve had lenses on me to hide my right eye, that''s it!" He thought as he quickly sprinted past his mom and grabbed a slice of toast from the kitchen table. "Why''re you in such a hurry--" "Someone''s waiting on me outside, I gotta go, mom! Bye!" He left the house to immediately meet up with Mark. "I''m sorry if I got a little late--" "You really saved me there! My alarm didn''t work so I woke up late!" "Pfft, it''s fun to see a smartass as you get so stressed up!" He laughed from Micah''s nervous fidgeting. "We''re gonna get late if we don''t move up the--" "Don''t worry about it, we''ll make it!" "If you say so..." They continued walking, silently walking alongside each other before Mark asks "What''s with your right eye? A new trend I''m not caught up on?" "N-No, I forgot to put on my lenses this morning." "That''s your real eyes, then?" "Yeah, it''s a little weird--" "I think it looks cool." "R-Really?" "Yeah! I''m sure Bianca will notice it, and the rest of your class!" "I-I guess... Mark?" "Yeah?" "Is it weird that Bianca and I are a thing?" "I''m not sure what you--" "I think we are a joke." "What are you talking about?" "She gave me a letter yesterday that told me to meet up with her behind the school and... it just feels too sudden. I''m also not in her league. It doesn''t make any sense." "Then... why are you in this crap?" "I don''t know... for the first time in my life I decided to do something different." "Different? So basically, you''re using her..." "Yeah." Mark laughed out loud, looking back at him after he regains his posture, "That''s not so nice of you, Micah!" Micah shuckles from Mark''s comment and replies, "Hehe, I guess I am a little selfish." "I''m not the right person to say what I''m about to say, but it''s okay to be a little selfish! Just don''t overdo yourself, okay?" He pats Micah''s back. "Mark, you''re an idiot." "What!?" "But you''re a good idiot, thanks for your kind words!" Mark was left speechless as Micah separated from him when they entered the school building. "Am I a good person? If I was-" Mark thought to himself as he looked down on his baggy pants, "then I wouldn''t have been a part of a gang. Well... whatever, no need to be so philosophical right now." He laughs it off before he walks to class. Micah, managing to get in class in time, leaps into his seat before the teacher notices him. The class starts and everyone is divided in groups of three. The teacher introduces the class with new work that everyone will be working on for two weeks. The work will be a part of preparation for an upcoming debate. As the groups were starting to work as the bell rang, ending the first class. Since the first class on Thursdays always stretch to lunch-time, everyone leaves their desks in hope of getting preferred seats in the cafeteria. "You wanna eat lunch with me?" Bianca sneaked up on Micah, startling him. "S-Sure thing, Bianca." His voice felt swayed, as expected of someone startled. She smiles and link arms with him as they walk to the cafeteria, getting stares directed at them, some in awe and some in spite. "So, the rumor is true after all..." could be heard from the lot as they passed by. There was a rumor that Bianca and Micah started dating. This was highly unlikely since Micah has been known ever since middle school to be a reserved person and a loner, but this surprised everyone, both in a good and a bad way. "Hey, lemme borrow some money." "W-What? Are you poor or something?" "Yeah..." She laughs as Micah sighs with his eyebrow furrowed. "I got some cash for you if you really need it--" "Thanks!" Micah effortlessly grabs her money without her noticing it at first. She flinches as the money in her hand was gone. "Wh--" "Thanks for the cash, Bianca!" She pouts as she walks off without him. Flustered from the sudden loneliness in the corridor, he runs back to her. They soon met up with the long lunch queue. It didn''t take long until Micah and Bianca were at the counter, about to pay for their food. Bianca seemed to be on a diet as she only picked plastic wrapped-sandwiches and a bottle of orange juice. Micah only went with two slices of pizza and a bottle of apple juice, placing the plate close to the woman on the other side. He payed with the money he got from Bianca and waited for her. As they were about to sit down, someone phoned Micah. He picked it up and saw an unknown number, "Who''s this?" He thought to himself as his thumb slowly moved towards the green button, answering the call. "Hello?" "Is this Micah Lieber?" "Yes, who is this?" "I am calling from the hospital regarding Agnes Lieber, she is in a coma." Micah''s hand grew numb, letting the phone in his hand drop to the floor, and as he dropped his phone he collapsed. His whole body shivered before he rushed with desperate and long steps with a hunched posture. Bianca was left baffled as Micah exited school like a wild beast was about to catch his heels. Time stopped as Micah ran through the main square, gasping for air as a panic attack was about to erupt. He entered the hospital, quickly asking the woman by the counter about his mother. The beating of his heart could be heard, begging to jump out from his chest. "Follow me, Micah." Her voice was composed, calming him down a little as they walked to Agnes'' room. "Here--" Micah entered the room and saw his mom, linked up to the respirator with tubes and IV drops. He approached her near-motionless body, staring at her. The room was silent, only the beeping from her pulse fills up the room. His legs quiver and loses balance, gripping onto her bed frame as he tried to hold onto it. "How could''ve this have happened? She hasn''t had any seizures for so long... and now it happened..." He thinks to himself as his heart shatters from the thought of his mother''s misfortune. "Doctor." "Yes, Micah?" His back is faced against the doctor as he continues to talk with him, "Do you have any idea when she''ll wake up?" The doctor was speechless, taking his time before he replies, "In a few weeks or so." "You''re lying doctor... I can take it." "...If." "If? You mean..." "We don''t know if she will ever wake up... the chances of her recovery being successful is... almost zero." Micah doesn''t say anything and instead turns around, sobbing and says, "Thank you... for letting me know... doctor."This book''s true home is on another platform. It''s been a month since his mother fell into a coma, not showing any sign of waking up. Being put down from his mother''s misfortune, he''s been living in the hospital for the last month, barely leaving the room during the day. "Hey, can you come by the hospital?" One day he decides to leave his mother to rest. Micah exits the hospital and takes a seat at the stone stairs just outside. The fresh breeze kisses his prickle cheeks, moving his head along the breeze for a short moment. "It''s a little cold outside... and I''ve been missing out on this and so much more. Maybe it''s time to get back to school..." He pondered as he was waiting for Bianca to come by. Not paying attention to anything around him, Bianca slowly creeps up on him with a sinister look on her face. She sneaks up on him and tickles him, throwing him of guard and rolls down the stairs. Barely being able to get up on his knees, he looks up at her in pain. "You dead or something?" "Soon enough, if I fall down another flight of stairs." "...How''s your mom?" He walks up the flight of stairs and pushes down his bangs as he says, "I don''t know." He grows more bashful as he nears her. "Micah..." "I need notes from last month, I decided to get back to school, so..." "Micah." She moves his coarse bangs away from his face and exposes his red eyes. His eyes pushes out tears, blankly looking at her before he lets out a cry. His bawling was faint, but it was enough for Bianca to be left speechless. "Micah... you''ve stockpiled all of this, you''ve not talked with anyone about this? You''re hurt and... seeing you sad breaks me. Before I met you I thought of you as someone absent of emotions, but... you''re so... human. I really like him, don''t I?" She thought as she had her eyes on him. "Bianca... can you get me notes before tomorrow?" "Y-Yes!" "Also..." "Hm?" "I know that your confession is fake." "I--" "Before you say anything, I don''t know what you gain from doing this, but I''m at fault here as well for playing along. I''m sorry." "..." She barely contains herself before she exclaims, "Why are you apologizing!?" He covers his face with his uneven bangs and replies, "Because I was selfish and insensitive. My bad." He walks back and turns around at the entrance of the hospital and gives out a bittersweet smile as he looks back at her and waves her goodbye. They parted ways and saw each other later that day when Bianca handed him her notes from last month. "Hey Jean, are you up for some fun?" The young man giggled, scratching his short hair on the side of his head, yawning as he says, "It sounds promising, but can''t we do that after school? I''m finally coming back to school." "Oh yeah! What were you expelled for now again?" Mark gets up from the couch, stretching a little. "Just fighting with a guy from our class." "Didn''t you break his jaw, or something?" "Jeez, you make it sound like I paralyzed him, it was just a punch, and another punch, and a few kicks." Jean nonchalantly recalls it and he grabs his bag and slaps Mark''s back. "Let''s go, Markie!" "We''re giving ourselves nicknames now? Then you''ll be... Jin!" "...Whatever." They left the house and began walking to school. Mark walks by Micah''s house, staring at it as they go by it. "What''s up with you?" "It''s Micah''s house." "Micah? It''s the homeless loner in 3-C, right?" Mark stops and pushes his hands in his pockets before he looks down and walks past Jean, saying, "Show the guy some respect, his mom has been in a coma for a month now. That''s cold, Jean." Jean remains silent throughout the way to school, occasionally glancing over at Mark. As they entered, Mark bumped into someone in front of him, catching Jean''s attention. "Oh shit, sorry-- Mark?" "Micah?" Mark was caught off guard as Micah''s long, coarse hair was gone and replaced with a choppy haircut, exposing his neck and his eyes and eyebrows. Jean pushed Mark forward, waking him up and walking to class. "Micah... he looks like he''s doing good." "Yeah... he had a smile on his face... he''s changed." Micah rushes by the corridor and enters the classroom with hasty steps, exclaiming, "Sorry I''m late!" The teacher looks at him, startled as she replies, "Y-You got just in time, Micah." He jumps into his seat, shoving his bag under the desk. Everyone glances at Micah during the class, finding it fascinating how Micah was so different in his new hairstyle. Micah occasionally looks at Bianca who''s talking with her friends across their desks. "Micah?" "Y-Yeah?" "Come forward and solve this equation." The teacher held the pen in her hand, waiting for him to take it. Micah nods and moves back his chair as he gets up and nears the whiteboard. "Come on, pretty boy!" One of the guys exclaimed, mocking Micah''s feminine-looking hairstyle. He ignores him and solves the equation, walking back to his desk after he gives the pen back to the teacher. The class was soon over and the classroom was immediately emptied, leaving only Micah and the teacher behind. "Is your mom getting any better?" "I don''t know." He turns around and leaves the room, only to bump into Bianca. "Watch where you''re going--" "Thank you for lending me your notes. Really, thanks." "S-Sure." Her voice was startled, as if she bumped into a stranger and not Micah. "The scheme got changed, huh? I''m on my way to the room at the end of the corridor, see you." "W-W-Wait, Micah!" Surprised by the sudden exclamation he turns back to her, "Hm?" "I just wanted to say that I''m sorry for what I did to you." "I know you are." He smiles and scratches the back of his head, saying, "Your friends aren''t here with you, so your apology must be genuine." "Y-Yes." He closes the gap between them and pulls her into his grasp, holding her tightly. He tells her, "I''ve been lonely and I... needed someone''s embrace. Sorry for using you, Bianca--" Her arms were wrapped around his back, tightening her grip. "Shut up." He stood mute in the corridor in her grasp. His breathing stabilized as the hug prolonged and not long after -- she let go of him. Her face was red, avoiding eye contact with Micah and quickly walked off. He regains himself and jogs back to the next class. On his way he meets up with a few classmates on their way to class. "Yo, Micah! You got yourself a new haircut, haven''t you?" One of the guys said as he saw Micah. "Y-Yeah, I tried to cut it on my own!" The guys stood still as Micah''s words entered their ears. "You cut your own hair?" One of the guys with glasses said as he squinted. "Y-Yeah..." Everyone in the little group look at each other before saying, "Good job, Micah..." and enters the classroom, pulling up their hair to appear more voluminous. As they enter the room, someone could be heard from inside shouting someone''s name. As they entered the room it was more clear; there was someone shouting Micah''s name. Micah shoves himself through the group and sees the guy looking after him; the guy''s hand were rough, worn-out by hard labor and his face was nothing different from his rough hands; his jawline was sharp and exposed itself very clearly, as well as his big nose all puffed up from constant strikes directed to it. His eyes were shallow, not as vividly detailed as the rest of the class, they were instead blank, almost with no depression or marks in his irises. "You''ve been dating my girl, huh!?" "What?" "Huh!? You really wanna get beaten up that badly!!? Let''s fight, Mika!!" Everyone stood back as the buff student shoves the desks back, creating an open area for him and Micah to fight. "You can do it, Micah!" The boys from the group earlier started cheering for Micah, and unexpectedly, the cheering brought out the opposite effect for Micah. "I really have to fight this hunk of meat? And I just got back goddammit!" Micah thought as he was about to fight the giant of 3-C, Danny Aspen!
