 Chapter 1: Untalented Boy

    Grand Academy is a well-known school for people with a decent amount of mana to learn a proper way to use their ability. This is a magic school which teaches magic to their student. In order to enter this academy, there are 2 minimum qualifications that have to be met by the student. The first rule, the student must be around 13 ¨C 16 and second rule student need to have a certain amount of mana in their body. What is mana? Mana is a spiritual energy that dwells within living thing in this world, by manipulating the mana some people can convert it into different shape and element. These peoples who can use mana is being known as a mage. Even in the first place, mana seems to give human many benefits, it also brings misfortune to human. Mana dwells within the living in this world thus wild animal and plants also have mana inside it. If animals and plants cannot control the flow of mana, it will turn into a demon beast and cause harm to others.

    The library in magic school is as big as a palace, the amount of book and ancient note is more than a hundred copies. The student shall come here to find a book related to their interest and then learn to improve their magic. Far from other students, young men sit alone at the edge of the library. His hair is white with a blue pale pair of eyes, on top of his table stack with a different type of book and magic guide. This book-loving guy is known as Vayne Beldrik a first-year student in Grand Academy. Despite enrolling magic school, Vayne is an isolated student with the lowest amount of mana. Due to that, he is the only one who can¡¯t properly use magic in class. In the morning, Vayne shall attend to his classroom to study about mana and magic.     The fact that Vayne cannot use magic is not going to let him down, Vayne has dedicated his study to understand mana and magic more than any student. Vayne has a good memory thus everything that he read shall be permanently saved in his brain, with this ability Vayne able to know what type of magic other student uses and can predict what kind of magic shall come next. During his reading, 2 male students approach him and take him with them, these 2 students are senior in this school. They have been using Vayne as magic practice and experiment. At a place hiding from other students, those 2 bullies start to raise their hand at the level of Vayne body and chant the magic words. The first one is trying to use water magic and the other one shall use wind magic. Vayne already knows because he can read the formula circuit that appears at the hand of those senior.


    After a few shots of magic bullets, those 2 bullies feel satisfied and leave Vayne. By identifying what magic his opponent will use, Vayne able to expand his mana and use it as the counter of that magic. However, because his body just contains a tiny amount of mana, Vayne can''t help but to endure the pain and take damage. Resting his body, Vayne notices that school time has finished, thus he began to lead his injured body to his house. Vayne is an orphan and extremely poor, at night he serves as a waiter at the bar in the city. The payment of his work is being used to support his life in study. Vayne has a dream to become a magic knight and serve the king in the future, but he knew that he lacks in talent and mana. Magic Knight is the highest rank of the order of knight in this kingdom, the main task of a magic knight is to terminate any deadly demon beast and protect the citizen of the kingdom.

 Chapter 1.1: Mock Battle Test

    Teacher: That all for today, before you leave the classroom, make sure you have found your teammate and register to participate in academy mock battle.


    Teacher: You have until next week to submit your application, those who fail to register shall get deducted of a mark. Each team shall have 3 persons per group and only be formed with a student in the same year.


    Mock battle test, it a popular event within the academy, all the student shall enter the battle as a team and display their ability in a fight. They also will be judged by the higher up knight and other important people. In short, those who make a good impact during the event have a higher chance to get hired as a mage by a certain organization. The most important group that student wants to attract is the magic knight, those who are summoned to joint magic knight shall receive a lot of fame and wealth in their life. Even though this event is a battle, students just need to aim at the target mark that is placed at other student bodies. Each team need to collect 5 points to win the match, any sort of magic is allowed in the battle. If the life of the student is in danger, the judge shall use their authority to stop the match.


    The student in the classroom start talking and approach each other, they all discuss with themselves on how to find the most suitable person as their team. Each of the students has something in common regarding the team, they need to avoid having Vayne as one of their teammates. Vayne who can hear their whispering and bad mouth about him can¡¯t do anything but remain silent because it is true that he is lack of mana. Can¡¯t bear in listening to all of those people Vayne decide to leave early today and head to his working place, today is his payday so Vayne can¡¯t help but feel a little bit happy. At the hallway, Vayne can see many female students talking to one male student. All of those trying to get him into their team, the male student is the most famous first-year student Alex Script.     The name of the bar where Vayne work is Moon Cat, this bar is owned by a muscular man with woman appearances. The name of the owner is Bark Lot an ex knight''s captain. Bark''s bar is very famous with it drink an ale that tastes juice yet very strong alcohol. Every night this bar is full of an adventurer as well as the knight who came to find good food and drink. Vayne has been working here since him at the age of 10, he did many mistakes and being scolded by the owner during his first month. After several months later, Vayne has grown his serving skill and now he is able to do a proper job. Some of the local customer very fond of Vayne because of his attitude, these adventurers regularly share the story of their mission and journey to Vayne during his break.  Besides that, Bark also teaches Vayne on how to do housework as well as cooking. Vayne has thought these adventurer and knight is a part of his family and without Vayne notice, these people always there to provide help as well as acting as his parent.

    Tonight, Vayne decide to take a shortcut to reach his home. During his walk, Vayne found the shape of a man lying on the road. Quickly, he approaches that person and tries to help him, that person is an old man with a skinny body. Vayne takes the old man to his house and lets him rest in his house. Vayne also prepares food and drink for that old man. Feeling tired, Vayne falls asleep near his bed. The next morning, Vayne woke up and found out the old man that he helped is staring at him. Based on this old man story, he is a traveller and travels around the world to sell a storybook. As a special thanks to Vayne for helping him, the old men give an old looking book as a gift. The old man told Vayne this book shall help him during the crisis and need. Vayne receive the book and opens it, at first the book seems very thick but it contains only 10 pages with 2 out of page have pictures on it. Vayne tries to ask the old man about the book that he gives to him. However, the old man without a clue is disappears from Vayne¡¯s house. He looks to the outside of his house, but that mysterious old man is nowhere to be found. Only the book that he left is with Vayne, this book looks very old with a thick black cover. Thinking to himself, the book suddenly moved and float in the air.


    Black Book: So you are my new master. Nice to meet you, I¡¯m Grim the magic book of envy.

 Chapter 1.2: Grim the Magic Book of Envy

    Grim: As you can guess, I¡¯m a magic book that can talk and also fly at the same time.


    (*Vayne is confuse*)


    Grim: I know you must be shocked to witness a flying book which can talk, but we can take it slowly.


    (*Close the book and throw it out through the window*)


    Panic and confuse with the situation, Vayne decides to run away from that creepy book. Instantly Vayne leaves his house and head to the backyard where he keeps the firewood stock. Hiding from the mysterious book, he hopes this is a dream and he stays sleep on the bed.


    Grim: It a good effort to throw me out, but the contract has already been completed. You can¡¯t run or hide from me.


    Grim: I know you were scared about what happened, but let me explain first.


    (*Vayne calm himself*)


    Noticing that its new owner has finally calmed down, Grim start to explain what actually happens. According to Grim, its origin comes from grand magus of the past. That magus creates Grim in order to keep note of magic which that magus think precious. In other words, Grim is a magic book that can store magic and ability. After the grand magus died, Grim has been kept deep inside a secret dungeon. After several years, a human adventurer found Grim in deep of it slumber, that explorer is the old man that Vayne found yesterday. Grim and the old man have travelled across the whole world and suddenly during the journey, the old man died after a demon beast attacks him.


    By using its own mana, Grim summon the old man¡¯s spirit and ask him to take Grim to another person that has a good heart. Then, at the end of their journey, Grim found Vayne. After fulfilling the wish that Grim made, the old man¡¯s spirit is gone to the afterlife.


    Vayne: In other words, you just like a notebook which holds a record about magic.


    Grim: You can say that, but my story is far from the end. Here is the best part, for each magic that being record in me can be used by the owner. It means if you store a high level of magic, you also can use it.

    Knowing that he is already late for class, Vayne quickly prepares himself and head to the academy. Grim also follow him by entering Vayne body as a ball of light. During his walking toward the academy, Vayne is being great by the town folk. Some of them giving him a piece of bread for breakfast, Vayne arrived at his classroom on time before the teacher came. Taking his usual seat, Vayne opens up his notebook and do self-revision before the classroom begin. The teacher enters the classroom, today the teacher is a woman with red hair, wearing blue cloth and skirt. She is an expert in summoning magic in the academy.


    Teacher: Today lesson is about summoning a monster to fight alongside you. Let¡¯s head to the academy field and begin our lesson.


    Teacher: Extra note for all of you, ensure to show some respect to the summoning beast. If not, it might attack you.


    The class has begun, Vayne try to summon his first monster but as he can guess it was a failure result. Another student has begun to summon their own monster, there is various type of monster that has been summoned. Some of it looks like wolf, bird, and rabbit, the most unique and strong looking summoning beast belongs to Alex. His beast is a red mane lion with several scars on its body. Everything seems fine, but suddenly the monster that being summon by Alex start to rampage and attacking other summoning beasts. Alex tries to control its but fails due to the the lion still not approve Alex as its owner. After defeating other student beasts, the lion starts to attack the student, everyone starts to panic and run away from the location.


    The teacher called her own beast and it is a large brown snake, the snake and lion engage in a serious battle. The snake spill out poison but easily avoid by the lion, then the snake tries to bite the lion¡¯s body but also fail. That lion is much more agile compared to the snake, as the last choice the brown snake uses its skill to change the land into spiking needle in order to pierce through the lion¡¯s body. The wild lion jumps up to the sky and unless it¡¯s magic roar, from its roar 5 big fireballs is created and smash to the snake body. The snake has lost but every student has been running far from the lion except a single female student who is injured her leg during the chaos.


    Teacher: This is a really bad situation, I don¡¯t have any strong beast to defeat that lion.


    The lion charge toward the female student and the teacher is using her body as a shield to protect her student. The sound of impact is really loud and can be heard from far, but the teacher and the female student is uninjured. Confuse with the situation, the teacher focuses her sight to the smoke area where the lion is being stopped by something. She then sees the reason why the lion is being stopped is because of Vayne, he stopping the lion charge with a big sword.


    Grim: Now, let¡¯s begin our first battle, my master.

 Chapter 1.3: The Magic Knight and First Mate

    (*Few minutes before fight*)


    Vayne seat alone and watching other students perform the summoning ritual, he cannot join in because of his own problem. Vayne decides to do field study regarding summoning magic, he tries to remember what kind of beast that being summon by the student. Vayne thought this information shall be help during the mock battle. The students start to make some noise, it time for Alex summoned a beast to make the entrant. Medium size lion with a red mane is looking really strong compared to other beasts.


    Grim: Oh, it the grand flame lion. I don¡¯t think any student here capable to summon this kind of beast.


    Grim: Master, you should be careful. This kind summoned beast is not easy being tamed by low-level mage like that student. At least for now.


    (*An explosion at the student location*)


    From Vayne place, he can see that the lion is out of control and began to rampage and killing other summoned beast. The students are panic and running away, they only care about themselves and pushing other students. One of the female students falls down due to panic and injured her leg because being stepped on.  Right now, the teacher¡¯s beast is fighting the lion in order to pin it down or defeat it. Vayne who know there is still a student that not yet escape rush to the fighting area in order to help her, the giant snake is on the edge of defeat and the teacher also has rushed to protect her student.


    Grim: Master, if you dive into the scene you shall die. I know you want to help but you are weak now.


    Vayne: I know, but I can¡¯t ignore other people that need help.


    Grim: If that so, then use my power to help them.


    Grim open up then turn to the first page, in that page contain the picture of a sword with its name on it. Not only that, but it also provides the information of that sword and ability.     Upon calling the name of the sword, Grim spill out the holder of sword and Vayne pull it out from Grim. The sword is shining in gold radiant, by using both of his hand, Vayne blocking the charge from the lion and stop it before reach his teacher and classmate. The lion jumps backwards after being stopped by Vayne, seeing this human boy as a new enemy the lion start to attack. The lion unleased few attacks by using its claw, Vayne able to block a few of its attack but some of the attack managed to put a scratch on him.  Vayne counter by swing his sword in the vertical side, the lion easily avoid that attack and strike at Vayne¡¯s stomach using its head.


    The lion knows its enemy is an amateur in using sword thus it can easily defeat him in this battle. The lion using its fireball again and launch it at the high speed toward Vayne, the attack is connected and now Vayne is in danger. The lion rushes to give a finishing blow to the boy, its jump up in the air and trying to bite Vayne¡¯s head. Vayne knows he will die, but he can¡¯t move away, he closes his eyes and prays for a miracle to happen. Suddenly, he can feel warm liquid flow on his face and the smell of that liquid is the same as blood. Vayne knew there is blood on his face but he can¡¯t feel the pain, open up his eye, he can see the head of the lion is separate from its body.


    Besides the lion head, stand a man wearing heavy looking armour, Vayne faint after using the Grim ability. The surrounding area now is quiet yet warm feeling, Vayne woke up from his sleep. He notices he is at academy clinic a place to give treatment for injured student. Besides his bed, a female student is waiting for him to wake up. She seems so happy after Vayne opens up his eye. The girl told about what happens after he faints, the person who saves him was a captain of the magic knight. He comes to the academy in order to discuss regarding the mock battle test and went he see the student is being attacked by a beast, he rushes toward the scene and beat the lion using his spear attack. Then he calls for help to bring Vayne and injured student to get treatment.


    Girl: By the way, I would like to give you my thanked for saving me earlier. My name is Mina Stephen.


    Mina: I hope we can befriend from today onward.


    Vayne: You welcome, wait what you want to be my friend?

 Chapter 1.4: The Third Team Members

    (*Next morning*)


    The classroom has begun just like always, those who are injured have been given an exception from attending the classroom. Today class is about the demon beast, the teacher is explaining their origin and the reason why it is happening. The demon beasts usually live in deep mountain and sea, but there is a certain time they will wonderer far from their place and meet the human. Those demon beast need to be exterminated and it the job for Magic Knight, besides Magic Knight there is another organization that took care of killing these beast know as Guild. The guild is a mercenary team that can be hired by contract and money, sometimes Magic Knight and Guild shall help each other to exterminate stronger demon beast.


    Today''s lesson has ended, Vayne and Mina leave the classroom together because they have something to discuss. After the event of rampaging beast, some of the students have stopped from picking up with Vayne. Going to the cafeteria, Mina has decided to talk about incoming mock battle with Vayne. According to Mina, they must find someone who is good in support magic to be in their team. The plan that has been drawn out by Mina is, Vayne shall be in the front line and Mina with one more team member shall provide support to Vayne. Looking that their food is ready, Mina stands up and go to the food stall to receive their order.


    Grim: You quite an obedience from the beginning, why you don¡¯t say anything back?


    Vayne: Well, she is better strategies compare to me. It is better to let her decide on the strategy.


    Grim: I can¡¯t believe you agree to be in the same team with that stalker.


    Mina is a stalker? It goes back during the time Mina treat Vayne in the academy clinic, Mina saw some bruise on Vayne body and she asks if that bruise comes from 2 senior students that bully him. Vayne asks how Mina knows about what happened between him and senior student, and then suddenly Vayne¡¯s brain starts to remember the scene during bully. As far as he can remember, he notices there is somebody hiding behind the tree, then during his study at the library he also remembers Mina was there, lastly every night during his work at bar, he remembers there is a female student from academy that likes to spend time in the bar until it closes.  Mina''s face turn red and she asks for apologies, the truth is she had set her eyes upon Vayne from the first day of class. For her, Vayne is a cool yet charming person that why she has secretly stalk Vayne in his daily life to find out more about him.


    Vayne: She is not a bad person and her feeling to be my friend is sincerely come from her heart.

    Mina returned withholding a portion of food for both of them, they both eat and discuss the third member for their team. Mina suggests calling one of the classmates as the last person, Vayne disagrees because he is sure that none of the student in their classroom except Mina wants him in the team. During lunch, Vayne heard some of the student talking about something, and then he asks Mina to find out what has happened. After a short talk between Mina and that student, it seems some of the first-year students have met with a ghost of a female student. According to legend, the ghost is the spirit of the first-year student that die during the mock battle. The place where this ghost always appears is near the empty clubroom at the end of the corridor.


    Curious to know more Mina begging Vayne to come with her to see this ghost, Vayne agrees to accompany Mina due to her own safety. After school, both of them goes straight to the location where the student meets this ghost person. Now they standing in front of the empty clubroom, carefully Vayne open up the door which he finds up is already unlocked from the beginning. Inside the clubroom is empty except a piece of blanket to cover a few boxes. Mina goes inside the club and inspecting everything that picks her sense. She next pulls out the blanket and found out a body of a female student, panic with the situation she runs and hugs Vayne. Vayne who is panic with the situation try to calm Mina out, and then with a small step, Mina tries to check the condition of the girl. What she finds out is, this person is already dead.


    Voice: What are you doing with my body? It is rude to touch somebody without permission you know.


    A voice of a girl come from the behind, Mina who quickly turn to see has faint due to shock. Vayne at another hand does not move because he needs to be preparing for what he shall see after he turns around. Before Vayne turn around, in front of his eye there is a girl flying without a leg and smiling to him. From what he sees, the flying girl and the dead girl is the same person. Shocking with what he seeing, Vayne also faints and joining Mira in deep slumber.


    Voice: Good morning sleeping head.


    Vayne and Mina woke up from faint, it seems the girl who Mina found out to be dead is now alive and eating a snack. The girl invites both of them to join her in her small tea party, both of them are confused and want to know the truth about what happened. The girl then starts her explanation about what happened, the truth is she can use magic to pull out her own soul from her body, in soul form she can flying and goes through the wall without any problem. The main weakness of this magic is, while in soul mode her physical body is exposing to danger, she now in trouble to find another student to be her group from the mock battle. Knowing the girl is looking for a new member, Mina quickly suggests that she need to enter Mina and Vayne''s group. Both of them have their own weakness and the new girl is suitable to join their group. She agrees to join their group.


    Now Vayne has finally gathered enough people to join the mock battle. The first teammate is Vayne Beldrik, a boy who can¡¯t use magic, the second is Mina Stephen who is the big stalker girl and the last one is Fiola Heirest, the girl who can separate her soul from her body. Together, they shall enter the mock battle test that will be held 3 days from now.
