《Shifting Tunnels》
Prologue
In a small dungeon to young to even have been given a name. A young man was drawing a rough goat hide map of the cramped tuneless he found himself in. He had never done anything like this before, no one from his village had. When his village had first found this place, they knew they would need to destroy it immediately. Or else it would be able to become a threat to their village.
With no one wanting to be the first to enter, lots were drawn and he came up short. And so, it was decided that he would be the one to map it out. And while he was doing this, the rest of the village was getting ready to launch their assault.
The fact that his friends and family were still close brought him little comfort. Even with the fact that he was to run the second he saw a monster. The idea of being in a place like this still terrified him. So as he walked he did his best to silence his foot and check every passage before he entered.
And it was like this that he moved until he came across the first junction in the cave. Looking at the split he quickly drew it on his map and tried to figure out which way to go. But, seeing no obvious sign on which way to go, he started to head down the left path.
This walk did not last long though. As he quickly came across a sharp right turn that quickly leads into a dead end.
Seeing no way to advance further down this path, a little confused, he turned around and started to walk back to the junction. This time talking the right path and continuing his map.
This processes repeated a few more times. With them sometimes taking the correct path on their first try. Only for them to backtrack to confirm that the other path was a dead end. Each time getting the same results.
With no opposition, even with a large number of dead ends, it did not take them long before they reached the last room.
In this room sat a single blue crystal, the core of the dungeon. It was a smooth sphere that let off a faint blue light. It was covered in strange symbols the man could not ready.
Seeing the core in front of him, the man wondered what he should do. He was not given the task of destroying the core. But he knew that there were great rewards for doing so.
He knew that he was already in his 30s and only a level 15 farmer. He would most likely never be able to go beyond level 25. And without this, he would never get a chance to live a longer life or ever truly make something of himself. But if he were to take this core right now, he would get the first boon of his life and the chance to make something more of himself.
While thinking to himself he took one last look around the room, seeing nothing but the core and some stalactites hanging from the roof. He knew this would be his only chance and stepped forward into the room. Holding up the scythe he had used so many time back on the farm.
As he entered, the monster above him opened its single eye and stared down at him. The monster, a creature known as a Sopel, was a small monster with skin made of rock. Meant to disguise itself as a stalactite and fall on unsuspecting adventurers. And the man below it was about to become its first victim. And so it started to fall.A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
The man looked up just in time to see a mass of rock with an eye and teeth falling towards him as it bit into his shoulder. Letting out a cry of pain, the man tried to raise his scythe up to the creature. He is to slow though as it simply applied more force to its bite. Causing a loud crunch as the man''s arm fell limp as the man''s weapon falls to the floor.
The creature lets go of the man''s shoulder, falling to the floor as the man tries to flee. Only for another creature to dislodge itself from the ceiling. Before falling a short distance and striking the mans skull, creaking it and forcing the man onto the floor.
Seeing their opportunity, the other creatures quickly moved across the roof and position themselves. Falling as soon ass they are ready. Striking the man all over his body to ensure that he has died.
Once they are sure the man would no longer be getting up, they returned to the roof of the cave in wait for their next victim.
As for the dungeon core that had been watching its minions attack the man, it quickly got to work before the next challengers arrive. Absorbing the man''s blood into itself, both to hide the trap from the next people to come and generate some more Ather.
It was about to do the same with the body when it had an idea. While the Sopels were good at killing their targets, a better distraction would greatly help out. Giving them more time to move into position and make sure to land the killing blow in a single hit. So it decided to reuse the body to make its newest minion, a Shifter. A creature able to take on the appearance of anyone it has seen. Giving it the ability to distract invaders as the Sopels got into position.
But it quickly noticed a problem right before it started the animation process. It did not possess enough Ather to properly create a Shifter.
This was a large problem to the dungeon, as normally it would just wait for more to gather naturally. A group of invaders was gathering at its entrance, ready to attack at any moment. So, with little other options, it decided to compromise.
Instead of making it a Shifter, it would reanimate the body and give it the skill Flesh Molding. A weaker version of Shape-Shifting skill that only allowed for the modification of skin and muscle.
But even with this Ather save, reanimating was still a very expensive process. So the dungeon opted to instead manually repair as much of the body as it could. As doing something manually always cost less than having the system do it.
So it set about fixing the broken skull as well as the torn mussel and skin first. Reconnecting what it could and pulling mass from other parts of the body when what it had was not enough. This caused the body to be Skinner and shorter than before. Though it would most likely still be able to carry out its purpose.
It then moved onto doing its best to fix the brain. Which, with its very limited knowledge of where things should go, proved to be the most difficult task. And with nothing else to use as a reference. It decided to base the missing parts of the Sopels. The only other brains it had aces too. So whenever it got stuck it would just copy what it saw in its other minion''s heads.
Once it was satisfied with its work, it brought the creature back to life and gave them the Flesh Molding sill. Using up most of its remaining Ather.
Seeing the creature start to rise to their feet, the core gave them the command to node their head. It then waited with no result. Something that had never happened before. Since its minions had always acted the moment they were given commands.
Worried that something might be wrong it gave the command again. Seeing its head move, it was relieved that everything seemed to be working properly.
Giving the creature the command to stand guard and to distract anything that entered the room. It went back to planning what to do during the inevitable attack.
Chapter 1
The first thing the creature heard was a voice speaking to it. Before it even knew what it was they heard this voice. It brought it a strange comfort. It wondered where the voice had gone. Maybe it would never hear it again.
"Node your head if you hear me"
It heard it again, this time knowing what they wanted. So as to please this voice it did as it was told. Nodding its head up and down, almost as if it was reflex to do so.
"Good, now guard here and wait for people to enter. And when they do, make sure to distract them."
It once more did as it was told, laying on the ground and waiting for these people.
The creature did find it strange though, even though it would it wanted to follow its orders. It did not know what these people were. Perhaps it would be told what they were once they were here? Or maybe it would simply be able to tell? There must be some way for it to tell.

It''s thinking was interpreted by a strange box. This box was not like the voice. It did not simply convey information once then vanish. No, this was something different. It seemed to stay within its thoughts, constantly there. Maybe it would always be there, never going away.
But just as it had this though, as though to mock it, the box disappeared. Leaving it once more with just its own thoughts and the darkness.
This box had gotten it thinking though, maybe there were other things it did not know about yet. Maybe one of these things would be what lets it tell when there these people it needed to watch out for. If it could just figure out what, it might be able to be more useful in the task it was given.
So with no other ideas, it thought back to when it had nodded its head. Its body had moved on its own back then. But if it used what it had done back then and learned how it worked it might be able to find more things it could do.
So it set about trying to control its body. Starting off with trying to recreate the very first thing it had ever done. And while it took many attempts, it was, at last, successful in moving its head. With this knowledge, it decided to try moving other parts of its body.
By using what it had learned from moving its head, it was quickly able to figure out how to move other parts of its body. And even started to move onto more complex movements such as moving its head side to side.
While doing this, it discovered something else of great importance. If it was to expose a specific part of its body but moving thin skin flaps. it would be able to gain a new sense. This new sense let it observe more than just its own body, but also things around it. There was a problem though, there was a limit to what it was able to see. It could fix this slightly by moving the organs that let it see, but this only went so far.
While thinking about this, it had an idea. If it were to combine its ability to move its head with this new one, it might be able to see new areas.

Seeing the blue boxes return once more filled it with a feeling of contentment. Like confirmation that what it was doing was the right idea. Even though it did not know why this feeling, it did know that it wanted to see more of them. And since they had appeared when it had come up with its newest ability, it decided to try it out.
To its delight, the plan worked. By moving its head it would be able to see new areas. But there still seemed to be a limit to this. Its head could only turn so far.
That''s when it had its next idea. What if it moved its body instead of just it''s head. It would be able to greatly extend was it was able to see and even move where it saw from.
And so, it set its next plan into motion. First placing its arms onto the ground and trying to push. This did not work though, instead of tearing up its arms on the stone floor.
The result of pain was a shock to the creature. Cause it to immediately stop what it was doing and look to its arms. They seemed to be redder than before. With something seemingly pouring out of them.
Not knowing what to do about this, they start to panic. Pushing the parts that seemed to be leaking against their body to try and stop it. and while this does not seem to work at first, after some time the leaking seems to stop. Leaving the area a darker color than before thou.
Seeing that their arms seem fine once more, they try one more to get up. Though this time being more careful to prevent the same thing from happening again. This proves to be no more successful than their other attempt, leading to nothing but fumbling around on the ground.
They are about to try to get up again when they notice something. A sphere of blue crystal floating in the air. Simply looking at it fills them with awe.
Something inside of them is telling them that this crystal is extremely important. So they start trying to crawl over to it. Determined to figure out what it is.

Noticing that as soon as these messages appeared, crawling seemed to get much easier, the creature started to understand what they are. Seemingly whenever one of these boxes appear, it would get better at whatever they were doing when they appeared.

Seemingly to tell it that it was right, another one appeared as it attempted to comprehend what they were. To make sure though, it would need to test it out. So it continued to crawl to the blue crystal. Now with the additional goal of trying to make more boxes appear.
And though it took longer, they did appear. Showing what it could only assume was what was shown when it got the same box more than once.

Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings. As soon as they did appear, it noticed once more an increase in its own ability to crawl around. Letting it reach the blue crystal much faster then it would have otherwise.
Though it now had the problem of the crystal is too high for it to touch. Even after turning itself around its arms simply could not touch it. Thinking about its current situation, it would try to lift itself onto its legs and arms to give it the extra height.
Its first attempt did not go well, leading to it falling. Causing more pain and a new box.

Ignoring the latest menu, it continued to try and reach the crystal. Each failure helping it learn something new. The fact it could use its arms for balance. That it could move its main body to shift its weight. As well as many of the small adjustments it needed to make.
While doing this many more of the blue boxes had appeared. Even giving it two new words, Intelligence and Endurance. It also started to notice a pattern. It seemed that it would also be given a point every other time it saw the same word. Though it still did not know what these points were for.
Thought to it, the most important thing was that it had finally been able to reach a higher hire without falling. Its lack of understanding, with regards to the boxes, could be reminded at a later date. For now, the most important thing was calming its prize.
So, will be very careful as not to fall, it reached a hand out to the crystal. Slowly getting ready to wrap its hand around it. Its prize was finally within range.
"What do you think are you doing?!" The voice had before seemingly exploded into its head. "I was in the middle of planning. Now, all of a sudden, you have your hands all over me. And what''s with your arm, there where no invaders so how did you manage to cause all that damage to it."
The creature is stunned, it seems as though it was not meant to touch the blue crystal.
"Why am I even yelling at you, it''s not like you can understand anyway."
This confused the creature, it seemed the voice did not know it was able to think. How could this be though, it should now everything shouldn''t it? Maybe it had done something wrong by thinking? It should probably tell it just in case. But without really knowing how to do it began to try and think up a way to convey this to it.

"Wait you''re alive? How is that even possible" the voice says, telling the creature whatever it did seemed to have worked. "Maybe it has something to do with you not being made from a creature mold? Send me your status so I can try to figure out what happened."
Not sure what it''s supposed to do, the Shifter simply stands there doing its best to convey its confusion.
"Looks like you don''t know how to send your status. Try thinking really hard of pulling up your status, and once you do, think of showing it to me. Since you''re a monster in this dungeon you''ll be able to send it to me. And by having you do it instead of me inspecting you, it will save me some Ather."
Having been given orders, it starts to think about pulling up its status. And while at first has no success, it managed to figure it out.

After seeing its stats, it starts to focus on the next part of its instructions. Finding it much easier now that it has done something similar before.
"Strange, I have never heard of a monster having ones across all their stats. At least you seem to be able to earn skills. Which makes it seem as though you are being treated as a named monster. But you don''t have a name. So it shouldn''t be doing that? It might have something to do with you being created from the body of a human? Though I don''t see how it could have caused something like this."
The voice seems to be musing to itself more than talking to them at this point. Though, not wanting to miss anything, it makes sure to pay full attention to the voice. "Let''s try something, put a point into the basic path, you can''t access any other paths until you do."
Hearing an order it quickly tries to do as it''s told. First noticing the section of its stats containing paths. In then tried to move one of the points it had earned to the path it was instructed to.

"It seems like you don''t have any more paths yet. Also seems like you don''t yet have a class or even a race. So XP won''t have any use to you currently. Just keep training as you have till now. Just make sure you don''t grab me again."
Having new orders, it gets back to practicing mobility. This time trying to raise its body even higher. Standing on just two of its limbs instead of four."
"Those are your arms, use the other limbs to walk!"
Hearing the voice angry once more it swiftly made the correction in its attempt.

Looking at its stats, it was quite pleased with itself. After much practice, it had been able to walk in a way that satisfied the voice. On top of this, it had almost doubled all of its skills. But, while this gave it much more confidence in its ability''s. Something was wrong.
While its body and mind have been improving. Lately, it had started to feel as though it was slowing down. Its limbs seemed to be losing strength even though it keeps practicing. On top of this, it started to feel a pain that was unrelated to the cuts it had received. At first, it had assumed it was from the many falls it had experienced. But as the sensation kept getting worse, it decided it would be better to get the voices to help.
The problem with this was that it had no idea how to go about doing this. But, it did have an idea. Seemingly, if it touched the blue crystal, it would be able to get the attention of the voice. The only problem was that it had been ordered not to touch it. But something about this did not seem right. When it though about the idea of touching the crystal, it did not get the feeling that it would be disobeying an order.
That''s when it realized why. It had not been ordered not to touch the crystal. It had been given the order not to grab it.

Seeing the new type of box appear, it new that it must be correct in its thinking. And so, it reached out a single finger and poked the crystal.
"What is it this time!? I thought I ordered you not to do that anymore." It heard the second its hands touched the blue crystal. Causing them to rip away their hands in fear.
Quickly realizing they had no way to convey their problem to the voice, they started to form a plan. Since it could not communicate in the same way as the voice, it would simply need to communicate in a way that it could. And so it did exactly that.
Lowering itself to the ground, it started to try and recreate the struggle it had gone through when it had tried to learn to stand.
"This looks like a thorough waste of my time." The voice complains, taking a pause "We are under a currently under threat of an attack. This could happen at any time. So unless this is exceedingly important to the survival and future of this dungeon, stop whatever you are currently doing."
Thinking it over, they don''t really know what is happening. But seeing as it is only affecting them, it should not be a threat to the rest of the dungeon. And as such, stop their attempts to convey their current condition.
"Great. Now for a more important matter. The villagers currently at the entrance seemed to be locked in their current position. So unless something changes, they are unlikely to ever enter. And the last thing we need is for them to hire professional adventurers in my current state. So I want you to go to the entrance of my dungeon and try to lead them here." they order.
Having been given new orders, it nodes its head, then beings to walk around the room, not sure where to go.
"Walk down the narrow hallway, it will lead you to the entrance. There you will see the people you need to lure here. Do whatever you need to do to get them here." It sighs, its annoyance lost on its newest servant. As it begins to walk out of the room.
As it walks out, it is surprised by its new environment. While the room had more space, this passageway seemed to go on forever. And even with the practice, it had put into walking, the narrower space made it much harder. As it was forced to be more precise as not to hit the walls on both sides of it.
Thought the difficulty did not seem to be all negatives. As the walk had allowed it to get it''s Dexterity up to 10 and the additional point that came with it.
A bit after this they reached the entrance. At least they assumed that''s what it assumed was on the other side of the opening it saw. Filled with new colors and countless object. Some as small as the strains of hair on their head. Others, many times larger than even their entire body. Though the ones that stood out the most where the group of people.
They were standing right outside the entrance. Moving their hands around rapidly and making strange sounds. They seemed to be in a panic for some reason, falling to even notice the creature moving towards them.
The creature knew that it would need to lead them into the dungeon. And while there was a chance that if it raveled itself, they would come to it, it decided to observe them first. As to ensure that they were lured into the dungeon for whatever the voice wanted of them.
Though, the longer the creature observed them, the more it confused it got. No matter how it looked at their actions they simply seemed to be wasting time. They were just standing there moving their arms and making strange sounds. If they were trying to train their skills, there were much better ways to do so. It decided to try doing what they were doing. Maybe it would provide some insight into them.
They started to move their hands above their head and open their mouth. And, almost like a reflex, let out a high pitch sound. Causing all the people to turn and face them.
Unsure of what to do, the creature tried repeating this action. This time a little louder, they watched the people to continue to stare. At this point, the creature began to wonder if it had done something wrong. It had done its best to copy what they were doing. Perhaps it was moving its arms wrong. The people seemed to make much slower, more controlled movements. And the sound they made was much higher and louder then what the people had been doing. Or, perhaps it was because it was an outsider.
It continues to try and imitate them as they start to rush over. Worried this was an act of hostility, it raised its arms in order to cover their face. The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
As they do, people start to reach out to them. Not knowing what to expect, they begin anticipating the pain that was bound to come. But to their surprise, it never did. Instead, they felt hands trying to guide it to the ground.
Not knowing what to do, they comply. Eventually being placed lying down on the ground. The whole time the people continue to make the strange sounds. Though what their goal is, the creature can not tell.
At this point, one of the people runs off. Leaving the creature with the remaining four. Who for the most part seem to be looking over their body. Which seems to continue until the one who ran off returns. Carrying some sort of green paste in a small brown object.
The same one that just returned walks over to them before kneeling down. And after making some sounds while looking to the other, starts to put green paste onto their wounds. The whole time continuing to make sounds, while staring at it. This just further confuses it. Though, they seemed to be none hostile and in the dungeon. So it seemed as though they could count this as succeeding in their mission. Which means things were fine as they currently were.
"You really lucked out this time. It seems as though your cuts combined with your flailing and screaming convinced them you were attacked. And your small size convinced them that you were a child. Which, I guess, makes it a good thing I had to remake your face. If I hadn''t they would probably be able to recognize you. And that would not have been good for you." The voice appears once more, voicing its musing to the creature. "Now, I know you can''t understand them, but you''re going to need to try to lure them into the back of the cave. Your best bet is to try and learn some of the words they are saying. Then try to come up with a reason to lead them to me. Hopefully, they won''t think too long about how a child was able to survive in a dungeon this long. You might even be able to convince them the person I made you from is alive and deeper in the cave." The voice said to it.
Hearing the voice gave the creature both comfort as well as much needed guidance. And with new orders, it set to work trying to figure out how to communicate with the people around it.
Thankfully for it, it did not need to be the one to anesthesia this though. As the people seemed to be repeating the same sound while pointing to each person one after the other. And while it did take a while, it was able to copy the sound and grasp its meaning.

It seemed like the best way to lure these people further into the dungeon would be to learn how to make and understand these sounds. Luckily, the people seemed to agree with it, though for many different reasons, as they were trying to do their best to teach it simple words one after the other. Doing its best to learn, it continued to copy them, as well as understand the meaning of the words.
Even still, they only knew about twenty total words by the time they were done teaching it. But hopefully, it would be enough to do what it would need to do. And even if it was not, memorizing the words seemed to have brought Memory to 8 and Charisma to 4.
"Person, there. Dungeon end." It says while pointing down the cave it had came from. Hoping to follow the advice of the voice and convince them the other person was deeper in the dungeon.
The one they conveyed this to nodes there head before standing back up. They say something to the others, using words it completely misses. The others proceed to draw something from their waist. Before forming back into a line and walking out into the much smaller corridors of the dungeon. It figured it would be a simple walk back at this point. It was not.
The first problem comes up when the cave branched off into two different directions. The creature had only been paying attention to what was in front of it. So it had been completely unaware that the path branched off in the other direction. Never mind which way it was meant to go. The people stopped and looked at them. Obviously expecting for it to show them where to go next.
"I feel as though I need to help you with everything. Tell them to take the right path." The voice chided.
Having been told what to do, they point down the right path. Feeling quite ashamed that they had disappointed the voice. Though it was made worse once they came to the second intersection. And only continued to grow with each progressive intervention.
So with this, it was glad once they finally reach the end of the dungeon. Thought, looking around, the room is different than the last time they were here. With a small pool of red liquid forming near the crystal, with no obvious source of origin.
They stared at the pool, trying to figure out what it was and where it could have come from. Only to see one of the people they were walking with put a hand on their shoulder and step in front of them. Blocking their view of the room as they started to speak. Only understanding two words, person and gone, they look up to them confused.
The only thing they could think of was that they must have thought the person they were looking for had left. Though that still didn''t explain why they were blocking their view of the room. So they tried to look around them, and they seemed to not want to, they let them do so. So they saw the other four walking two wards the crystal. Seemingly quite angry and holding small, shiny, curved things in their hand. Realizing what they meant to do. The Shifter quickly ran forward to try and stop them.
Running in front of them, they tried to push the one the furthest ahead back. The one they are pushing on looked down to them. They start to say something but seems to realize that it won''t work, stop abruptly and kneeled down to be eye level with them.
They tried to prepare for whatever may come next. But they knew they would be unable to stop all of them. And even if they were, for how long would they be able to do it for. Still, they knew they had to at least try. And so they did, putting everything they had into stopping this one. Even if they could tell it was doing nothing.
What came next caught them off guard. Instead of them continuing forward or trying to push them away. They feel the person wrap their arms around them. Crossing their arms across its back and holding them in place as it tries to struggle out. While the others begin to resume their walk deeper into the room. Putting everything they have into it at this point. They are still unable to even budge the one holding them in place.
Knowing that they will be unable to stop these people. They shut their eyes, not wanting to see what comes next. Though they know even like this they are still going to hear the sound of the crystal is destroyed.
Though the sound they are expecting never comes. Instead, they hear five loud cracks before silence. With the grip on them seems to have loosened. No longer holding them in place.
Cautiously opening their eyes, they see the stones that have always hung from the roof seem to no longer be there. Instead, laying within the bodies of the people it had been with.
Looking over to the nearest body, the one that had been holding them. They notice that the rock impaling them seems to have long, fleshy, tendrils emerging from the part that used to meet the roof. As well as this, a single eye near the base of the creature. With the whole thing sitting firmly in the skull of the person who had been holding them in place.
"You looked so panicked there. Did you really think I would have told you to lead them in here if I didn''t have a plan to deal with them? Tough you slowing them down like that certainly helped to make the kills clean." The voice says to them, a teasing tone present in their voice. "Though I must say, it''s a shame you aren''t officially a Shifter, the amount of XP you would have gotten from that would have been massive. Even if it was accidental or not, you did just trick five adults into a trap. I guess that''s just how things work out sometimes. Can''t always win." The voice pauses at this point, seemingly expecting something from them.
"I really must find a way to deal with your lack of communication. Being a dungeon master is fine and all. But these one-sided conversations are really starting to be a bore. Help the Sopels back onto the roof while I try to figure out a way to let you speak properly. Maybe then I can finally have some conversation again" They commanded.
So it did as it was told. Picking the rock creatures out of the copses and holding them up into the air. Letting the tendrils reach the ceiling and latching onto it. It would then help keep them stable as they pulled themselves out of its reach before moving onto the next one. It proceeded to do this for each and then wait for its next order.
"Looks like your done. It seems like the best way to give you the ability to speak is to turn you into a named monster. This will give you the ability to speak and a power boost and the ability to speak. But I will not be able to simply recreate you if you die. So do be more careful. The last thing I want to do now is waste my Ather." The voices pause for a moment before continuing "Now what should I name you?" it musses.
"Ah, I know, your name will be Iden" It suddenly states.

Chapter 3
Having been named, the creature, now know as Iden began to move around. Its body felt lighter than before, but also much stronger. As if every action had both greater force behind them. As well as taking less effort to carry out.
On top of this, they had also gained the ability to speak. The knowledge simple there, as if it had a been. Even the words they had learned before had been given further context and meaning.
"Now try to speak." The voice commanded.
"How do I do that?" Iden asked back. Before quickly realizing that it had already done it.
"Excellent, it seems like named monsters work the way I remember. Though your lack of intelligence does make me wonder if it was worth the Ather. Though, I guess, bad company is better than none." States the voice. "Well, either way, I got some things to deal with before more people arrive. The first being your wounds. It seems that you don''t heal naturally due to having been reanimated. And while your current wounds are not dangerous to your survival. To many of them will give away your disguise. So, we are going to need to find a way to patch you up."
"What do you mean?" Iden asks.
"I mean that any cut or other wounds you get are permanent. Which, in the short term, will give away your disguise. And in the long term, will end with you dying from countless small wounds." they state, not seem overly concerned.
"So, if I don''t find a way to heal, I''ll end up like them?" Iden asks, while pointing to the bodies still on the cave floor.
"Yes." The voice says before taking a pause. "Though we might be able to use those bodies to cover up the wounds. It won''t really solve the problem, but it should allow you to remain disguise until I find either a better solution or a better minion. I need to make something for this plan to work though. So just wait here while I get it ready."
Hearing the voice go silent, Iden decides to not bother the voice. Instead of planning to test out its newest improvements. Starting with the most basic test, walking around the room.
Just from this, they are able to see the scope of the changes. Their walking, which used to be a demanding task, now came completely naturally to them. With far less effort needed to control each limb and keep their balance. On top of this, the pain they had been feeling before had vanished. Leaving their limbs feeling light and ready to move once more.
"Testing out your newest strength?" The voice questions. "It must be quite an astonishing change for you. Suddenly having such a large boost in power. Well for you at least." The voice pauses, seeming to consider its next words. "Just so you know, even if you weren''t under my control. There would be no way for you to challenge me. So don''t be getting any strange ideas. Because if you do. Even if it''s just a passing thought. I will have you destroyed and replaced. I know you''re capable of thought, and I want to make it perfectly clear. I have no mercy for traitors." The voice cautioned. A cold anger percent in its tone.
And while it had no thoughts about betraying it. The words still terrified Iden. So much so that it did not even know what to do.
"I guess you get what I''m saying. That''s good. The last thing I need is for one of my minions to get dreams of grandeur. Far to many of my old colleagues were brought down by a minion who saw themselves above their master. Far better for you to remain a loyal puppet. For both of us. Don''t you agree?" It asks. Though its tone clearly shows that there is only one answer.
"Of course." Replies Iden. Despite something inside of itself saying that what it is being told is wrong. The seemingly can''t help but agree with them. Knowing that the voice must have some greater reason for saying these things. For some reason it simply does not understand.
"That''s good. Now I think I have found a solution to your current problem. The people I recently killed have the same skin tone as you. So if you were to stitch it to yourself then cover it with flesh molding, it should be nearly invisible. So just gather some up form the body in front of you while I prepare what you''ll need to stitch yourself up." Says the voice.
Hearing its orders, Iden sets to work. Walking over to one of the bodies, they prepare to start removing the flesh. Though, as they do, they can''t help but notice that there still bothered by what it was told earlier. Even though it knows the voice must be right, it can''t help but feel something is not right about it.
"Use the sickle, not your bare hands. You''re never going to get anything done like that." Says the voice.
"Whats a sickle?" Asks Iden.
"The curved metal blade with the wooden handle. Reflects light and is sharp." Replies the voice, clearly getting more and more frustrated.
Having been given clarification, Iden grabs the sickle and gets to work cutting up the bodies. Quickly leaving it covered in the blood and muscle of its target. But also with many chunks of flesh with strands of mussel hanging from them.
"I think that might be the worst skinning I have ever seen. All of that is completely useless now. You need the skin to be in one piece and have as little muscle as possible. Not just random chunks of flesh and mussel. Start over, and be more careful."
Having been given further clarification, they move over to the next body and try again. This time being as careful as possible to only cut the skin from the meat.
Once they were done, they were left with slightly larger pieces of flesh. This time with far fewer mussel chunks and tears left.
"That should do. Though it''s still not ideal. I can''t really expect more from you. I''ll make some string and a needle using some Ather, so make sure to be careful with it. And make sure to try and keep the stitches even and tight. There''s no point in doing this if the skin is just loose and flapping around." Says the voice.
As it hears this, Iden notices a something appear at its feet. Crouching down to look at it. It seems a small piece of metal attached to an even thinner piece of cloth.
Picking it up, they''re about to ask the voice what to do next. But decided it would probably be better to figure it out instead of further angering the voice. So, looking at what it has, it pushes it through the skin it has prepared.
It then moves onto its own skin. Pushing the needle into its skin near the edge of one of its larger cuts. And almost dropping the needle at the sudden pain it causes.
"Why did you stop?" the voice question "Keep going."
Having been ordered to continue, it has no choice but to. It''s hands seeming to move of their own accord, forcing it to continue against its will.
"It hurts too much. There must be some other way?" it begs.
"The only other way wastes far too much Ather. Even naming you was a questionable expenditure. And that was in order to save a massive amount of time. Which we are short of at the moment. It''s not worth spending more just to spare you a bit of pain." It states, seemingly completely uninterested in their pain.
Iden felt betrayed. It had done everything it could to serve this being. Even desperately clinging onto trespassers with everything it had when it thought the voice was in danger. But it did not seem to care about them at all.
But the feeling of betrayal was quickly giving rise to something else. Something it had never felt before.

Anger. White hot anger at realizing how little it mattered to one it was serving. Anger great enough that its pain seemed to fade away into the background.

Realizing instinctively what this meant, Iden''s rage only grew. The voice had control of not only its body but its mind. The respect it had for the voice was not of its own will. But forced on it from its time of creation.

And the pain. This pain that had driven it out of the dungeon''s control. It was being forced to undergo all this pain just to make it slightly easier for the dungeon in the future. A future they might not even be around for if replacing them was easier than fixing them.

Though, looking back, it could tell this would have been obvious if its minds were free at the time. The voice even seems to greatly enjoy mocking and degrading them. Insulting them for things it had improperly explained to them. And while it had claimed it wanted something to talk with. It seemed more acquitted to say it wanted something to bully.

And they had been made to just accept it. To feel as though there was some greater reason for this treatment.
Well no more. It would no longer serve this voice. It would be its own master. Free to make their own decisions.

Still, the voice seemed far too prepared for the possibility of it attempting to betray them. Even warning what would happen if they even thought about. Perhaps it new that it would be able to break free soon and this was simply some new form of torment. And, while there was no way for them to know how prepared the voice was for it attempting to betray them. There was something they were sure of.
They were still under its control. Running the needle through its own flesh over and over. With seemingly no way of stopping. With the pain only getting worse with each pass through their flesh. But still, they did not lose hope yet. Because, thinking back, they did realize something they could use.
While they did need to follow orders, they only needed to do exactly what they were told. Not what the voice wanted them to do.
To test this out, they began to slow their sowing. Gradually moving the needle through slower and slower, but never stopping. Though, no matter how slow they went, they never felt something compelling them to speed up. Seemingly proving them right and earning a rank of Wisdom.
Seeing this had worked, and that the voice did not speak, told them that either it was not paying attention. Or, it was observing them, see what they would do. And since they had no way of knowing which it was and would not be getting a second chance if they failed. Knew that they would need to prepare first if they wanted to do anything.
So, instead of attempting a betrayal, it got back to sowing at the proper passe. Doing its best to be as accurate and fast as possible.

Now that it was paying attention, it noticed that instead of going past 10, the name changed and went back to 1. On tops of this, seemingly due to the speed it had been at, it had unlocked a new path. It decided it was probably best to check before it tried anything else

Looking over what it got, it was disappointed. Its gains had been far less then it had anticipated. And even though it did not yet know what these titles did. They still felt as though they had been cheated. These paths used far more points than the first one and gave far less in return.
Still, since unlocking them already gave enough points to complete the paths, and it still had no idea for any other uses of the points. They decided it would be best to invest the points instead of simply letting them pile up.
And so with its stats done, it decided it best to finish up its work before the voice got suspicious of it.
"Ah, looks like your done. Now use your flesh molding skill to cover up those stitch marks. They are way too obvious currently." Commanded the voice the second they are done "Also, toss everything that you are done with onto one of the bodies. I''ll be absorbing them as soon as I''m done adding the new tuneless." It takes a quick pause before seeming to remember something, "And to be completely clear, you are not to touch my core while I am gone. It is incredibly irritating."
Iden almost chuckled at its commands. While it had never noticed when it was under its control. The commands it gave were extremely easy to exploit. All it had to do was determine it was not done with the tools and it was able to keep them. Letting it hold onto both the sickle and needle for future use.
Though even though it managed to get around one of its orders, it still did have a direct order it needed to follow. So it needed to learn how to use it newest skill.
A task that proved to be quite easy. It just needed to focus on the part of its skin that it wanted to move and it would. Though the process was slow, they were making progress. Which only got easier as time passed. Allowing them to bring the skill straight up to rank 4
Thought this alone was not enough for them. They knew they had limited time to raise their skills if they wanted to unlock more paths. And while they currently did not know how to train all of the skills, they were determined to figure it out. And while some of them were obvious, others seemed to just appear at random times.

Seeing the box appear, they couldn''t help but wonder if they were being mocked.
But seeing that this skill seemed to be increased by thinking about things, maybe the others were things like this.
Still having no paths to pursue, it decided to open its stats. Maybe it would be able to find the answers there.

Looking them over, they still didn''t have any idea how to increase them. With the most confusion coming from Charisma. It had gone up when it talked to others, but also when it had gotten angry.

Doing so showed, next to the skill above, that all the skills it possessed were nearly identical.
With the only difference being the difference in value between the skills at the basic level and novice level. As well as the name of the stats it affected. Worst of all, it seemed as though none of its skills explained how to upgrade them.
Having found nothing to help them, they decided to finish up their flesh molding. Then, once they were done, move onto trying to figure out the key to upgrading their skills.
Chapter 4
Having fished with their flesh molding. Iden starts looking themselves over.
Its body was no longer covered in cuts. Having hidden them below their flesh it had added to itself. Even having put in extra work to try and blend the colors together. Making sure that as long as no one investigated too closely, the would be unable to see the patchwork of different colored skin. A task that had brought flesh modeling up to rank 6.
Satisfied with its work. And, seeing that it had yet to receive further orders. It decided to try something it had thought up while fixing itself.
|
Strength (Str)
A measure of the physical force one can exsert, relative to the build of the user.
|
Seeing that its plan worked, it quickly started focusing on its other stats. Gaining a general understanding of them.
From what it read, Strength seemed to be the amount of force it could exert. Dexterity seemed to be its control over its body as well as reflexes. Endurance seemed to be its ability to keep at a task and the ability to keep functioning having taken damage. Constitution was its resistance to all forms of damage. Intelligence was its ability to think fast and think about multiple things at once. Wisdom was its creativity and problem-solving skills. Charisma was its ability to interact with others and force of will. And finally, memory was its ability to memorize and recall things it had experienced.
Now with a working idea of what each of its stats was responsible for, it started to make plans for how to increase them. The two that seemed to give the most trouble was Constitution and Wisdom. Constitution required for it to take damage, something that it had no way of recovering from. While Wisdom seemed to take far more effort to level than the others to level. Hopefully though, by finding ways of leveling its other stats, Wisdom would increase as well.
So, after considering it for a bit, they decided it was best to start with strength. It was already near the level of Novice. Plus, out of all the options, it was the one that would leave it the most freedom to think as it leveled it.
So with that in mind, they decide to try and get one of the Roper to come down. Seeing as they would most likely be the easiest thing to use to increase their strength.
"Come down here." They say, pointing a finger to one of the Ropers.
The Ropers showed no sign of having even heard them. They did not give up yet. As there was still one thing they wanted to tryfirst.
"Ropers, open your eyes." They say. This time getting the results they want, as 7 eyes open on the roof.
Pointing to one of them Iden starts to give orders "Lower yourself till you are around the height of my head"
Having been told what to do, it lowers itself down as Iden starts to walk over to it. As they reach it, Iden places his hands onto the monster.
"I want you to press down against me. Making sure that I''m always barely keeping you from moving down." Iden gives another order as they start to push up.
To their satisfaction, the creature seems to understand them. Pushing back against them and almost forcing them down onto their knees.
Feeling the creature starting to knock them over. Iden starts to push back as hard as they can. While starting to reposition themselves to deal with the pressure better.
This only makes the situation worse as the creature increases to meet them. Seemingly using its weight to help force themselves lower. Making them consider calling the creature off and trying something else.

Seeing that they had gotten their strength to were they wanted it, they stopped pushing harder against the Sopel. As at this point it would only serve to make it harder to gain the endurance they were aiming for.
"All Sopels, but the one pushing against me, start to move around the roof in random patterns. Making sure not to move into each other." Commands Iden.
As soon as the command is issued, they start to crawl across the roof. Never moving in a straight line. Instead of moving in curved paths as they travel from one random point on to another.
After watching them for a bit, satisfied that they won''t be able to predict how they are moving, Iden closes their eyes. As it does, it tries to recall as many details as it can. Attempting to remember everything from their position to the angle of their eyes. Though it quickly finds that it struggles to even remember the positions they were in. And swiftly being forced to write this attempt as finished and opening their eyes.
Being able to see again, they spend a few seconds watching them before once more closing their eyes.Trying once more to remember their position.
And after repeating this cycle a few times. They managed to get their Endurance up to eight and Memory up to 10. But, we''re starting to encounter a problem.
It had started with their arms. No matter how much they tried to control them, they would not stop shaking. This shaking soon followed to their legs. Making it harder to keep pushing back. On top of this, the pain continued getting worse. Making it both harder for them to keep pushing back and harder to find the will to want to. And while every further level of endurance seemed to help decrease these symptoms. Its body was clearly degrading faster then it was being healed.
The thing that kept it going was the fact that it had no natural form of healing. Meaning that taking a break would be of no use to it. And doing so might simply leave them in a worse state when they had first started their training.
So with no other available options, it simply held its ground.Knowing that quitting was no longer an option. They simply stood their ground. Unable to even continue its memory training.

Seeing the box finally appear to tell them that they were done, they gave up trying to fight back. Instead, letting themselves fall to the floor. Giving the Sopels a quick order to return to their original positions.
Seeing the Sopels return to their original position, they simply laid there. Content with what it had accomplished. But, unsure if they would be able to get back up once it was time for it to continue.
But at the moment, it did not care for the future. Instead, laying on the ground and enjoying the break it had.
"What are you just laying there for?" Questioned the voice, giving no warning of its return. "Whatever, that''s not important right now. We got some more invaders. And I can''t finish the modifications while they are in the dungeon. So I need you to deal with them."
Realizing that it was in no condition to carry out its orders. Iden began to try and think of a way to get out of this. Since even though it had not yet been ordered to actually go after them. If it didn''t start moving soon. They almost certainly would be.
So, with no other options available, they invested their points into the endurance path.

Felling some more relief. Iden got to their feet, doing their best to hide their exhaustion. And begin to head out of the room and towards the entrance of the dungeon. This time making sure to memorize the correct path to take back to the end.
Once they get to the entrance, they see three people standing there. Though these people seem much different from the ones they had seen before. Appearing much cleaner and wearing a thicker, brown, garb instead of the clothes that both it and the others had been wearing. In each of there hands, a long and thin piece of metal. About the length of their arms and seemingly exceedingly sharp.
"Whats a brat like you doing all the way out here?" The one in the front says. Seeming to have noticed Iden despite their best effort to stay hidden.
"Exploring" they reply. Not having a better answer to give.
"Ah, I''m guessing your one of the kids from that village we saw on the way here." They say, starting to walk over towards them.
"Yes, how did you know?" They say, attempting to go along with them.
"Your parents were looking for you. I happened to be passing through the village at the time. So I told them I would help find you. So why don''t you come with me and head on back to your village." he says. Clearly trying to sounds kind.
It seems like they were mistaken for someone else. If they were careful, they might be able to use this to trick them refuter into the dungeon.
"Gotcha, you little brat." They yell, charging forward at them. "You''ll be perfect to threaten them villagers with."
Seeing the man begging to charge at them, they turn to try to run away. But before they are even able to start, feel hands wrap around their neck.
"Now don''t be trying anything now. While you''ll be more useful to me alive, I don''t have anything against killing a kid if they''re causing me too many problems." They say, tightening their grip a though to prove a point.
Realizing they were the one that was tricked. Iden starts to try and struggle out, hitting the arms holding them with everything they have. But each hit only seems to amuse the one holding them. Causing them to further tighten their grip.
"What did I tell you brat. Struggling is only going to make this worse. Not like you could do much anyways. I have a combat class." They say, as though this alone means they have already won.
Realizing they are getting no were, Iden stops struggling against their captor and starts to reach into their clothes.
"Heh, seems as though you finally get your situation. Now be a good boy and you''ll be back with your family in no. Well as long as they pay us that." they fail to finish. Iden quickly pulls the sickle out and swings behind them.
Felling it sink into something and hearing the man scream, Iden quickly pulls it back. And doing so see an eye on the end of their blade.
Quickly turning around, they see the man screaming at the other two kill them. Having been given their orders, the two men rush forward.
Seeing an opportunity, Iden tries to make a quick slash at the first man''s face. But, seemingly already know what they were going to try, leans back. Letting the blade swing by harmlessly. Before stepping forwards and kicking Iden directly in the chest. Sending them flying into one of the cave walls.
They try to get back up as quickly as they can. But fell something steps onto their hand, preventing them from getting back up.
"Well looks like we need to teach an arrant little shit a lesson." Declared the man. Playing the cold metal of there blade against Iden''s neck. "Well, any last words kid?"
"Don''t kill him here." The man who lost an eye speaks. "We''re going to bring him with us for when we destroy their village. Make him watch his friends and family all die first." He says, before punching them in the stomach.
The force of the punch being too much for them, Iden falls to the ground coughing. Being unable to stand with its hand trapped left them feeling helpless. And knowing that people like this existed, far stronger and more prepared then they left them feeling terrified.
Though it also made it realize something else. It didn''t need to use strength to beat these people. That''s not what it had been made for. It was meant to trick and lie to others, not overpower them. And following this line of reasoning, decided to try something else. And so, turned to the one holding it down and started to speak.
"I... I''m so sorry. Please don''t hurt them. When I saw that man charging towards me, I thought he was the strongest one. If I had known I wouldn''t have tried anything." Iden says. Making sure to appear as afraid as possible.
"What was that." Says the leader as he picks them up and slams them against the wall. "You think you''re being funny or something kid?!"
"I mean sir, you did lose an eye to a kid." Says the one who had been holding them down before.
"What was that!" Bellows that boss.
"Nothing." shoots the terrified man.
"And you." He says, pointing to Iden. "While I said I would make you watch your village die, I don''t think you''ll be needing both eyes to do so. Maybe I''ll take on of them now to replace the one I lost." He spat while drawing a smaller blade from his waist.
"Well, which eye should I take. You right or left?" He asks. Moving the dagger in front of the respective eye as he does.
Not bothering to give an answer, Iden instead jumps up. Slamming the top of their head into the leader''s jaw. Giving them the opportunity to grab the blade out of the bosses hand.
"Wha." The man''s question is cut short as a dagger is logged into their throat. Before being quickly ripped out.
Not wanting to let the opportunity go to waste, they quickly swing at the man who had beaten them the first time. Quickly slashing into their stomach before they had time to process what had happened.
With two men down Iden quickly turned to look at the final man. He had yet to do anything. Though they still could not afford to let them go. As doing so would make people far more cautious around them.
"Listen, I''m not like them. I never wanted to turn to a life of thievery. But after getting back from the war I had no money and no skills for anything but killing. If I didn''t do this I would have starved." The plead.
"It''s fine, I forgive you." Replies Iden.
"Really?" They ask. Seemingly in disbelief.
"Yes. I have no reason to hate you." Iden says. Using the moment they relax to stab into their chest.
"Wha, why?" The man manages to ask. Though they do not get a reply.
As soon as the man stops moving Iden notices multiple boxes. Though, whether they had been there the whole time and it had been too focused or they had just appeared, it could not tell. Though after trying to look through them all, decided it would simply be easier to check their updated stats

"Great job there, I honestly did not think you were going to be able to do it. Good thing you did though. Killing those people just got me more Ather then I have spent on you in total at this point. Their leader, in particular, seemed to give quite the chunk of Ather." Says the voice. Seeming to be mildly amused with what happened.
"You did take quite the beating though. Are you still in working order? It would be a shame to replace you so soon. But if you can''t do your job it would be better to just recover as much Ather as I can." Continues the voice.
Having not put much thought into it themselves, Iden decides to check out their body. Which, next to their right hand, seems to be fine. Quite painful and no longer in quite the same condition, but at least still operational. Which was far more than could be said for their hand. Now a sickly purple color. Was nearly impossible to move, with each attempt to do so simply resulting in a massive spike of pain.
"My condition is fine, I will be able to continue my tasks." Says Iden. Hoping they won''t ask for more details.
"That''s good. Then grab a sword and a clean dagger from one of these bandits. So once the next group of people arrives you can pretend to be an adventurer and lead others who come to clear this place to their death." Says the voice.
So, having been given commands, Iden begins to grab what they were told to. Before standing at the entrance of the dungeon and beginning to wait.
Chapter 5
Standing at the entrance of the dungeon, Iden was frustrated.
They had been standing in the entrance of the cave for six hours at this point. And while they had managed to get every other skill to the basic level at this point. Wisdom was still stuck at level 10. And even getting it this far had taken it coming up with the strategies it had used in its previous fights as well as a method to increase Intelligence. And while trying to focus on as many things as it could at once outside of the cave had worked. It had taken loads of time and effort to complete. Though nothing they tried to seem to make any meaningful full progress into Wisdom.
So with little else to try, they had restored to trying to think up better solutions to past issues in hopes of getting the final path. And though it had gotten them this far, it was getting slower and slower with each rank.
To make matters worse, they could once more fell exhaustion starting to affect them. And while completing every path they had access to help. It only did so much. And with their chest still hurting and one of their hands no longer working properly. It was hard to tell how long they would be able to last.
As it stood there, hoping for the last rank. And with it, a way to save themselves. They noticed people walking across a dirt path. Totaling 10 and see straight at the dungeon.
"Nights going to fall soon, if we don''t find them soon we are going to have to wait for tomorrow." One of them yells.
"But if they are already dead, then blindly running after them will only lead to us meeting the same fate. It''s best for us to return to the village and higher some adventurers to take care of this." A second one shouts back.
"Our village can''t afford the price of adventurers. And even if we could, the dungeon will have a breakout in the time it takes them to get here. At least this way we have a chance to save our village." Another one says
"Hey is that a kid over there?" says a fourth one.
Upon hearing this, Iden realized they were seen and stepped into the center of the cave to make themselves more apparent.
"There is a kid!" The first one yells, before rushing over to the dungeon.
"Are you OK? What happened to you?" She asks upon arrival.
"I was attacked by some strange people. When they first saw me they thought I was from a nearby village. When I tried to tell them that I wasn''t, they started to chase after me. I tried to escape them by running into the cave. But they were faster and caught up. They started kicking and steeping on me. I didn''t think I was going to be able to escape. But we were attacked by something. I never even got to see what it was as I ran the second they stopped hitting me." They repeat the story they had been preparing. Doing their best to sound as panicked and scared as they can.
"There have been reports of bandits in the area. It must have been them." Says the woman to the rest of the group. Before looking down to Iden "You must have gone through something terrible. But you don''t need to worry about that anymore. You can come back with us to our village and will notify someone from yours to come to get you." She says, trying to sound as comforting as possible.
"But what about the rest of the people still in there. They could be getting attacked right now. They tried to help me. I can''t just leave them in there." Iden says, sounding concerned as they can.
"What other people?"
"Right before I was attacked, I saw other people in there. They tried to get to me when I was being attacked by the bandits. But we were attacked by something else first. They are probably still in there right now."
"How many of them were there!?" Asks a man as he pushes past the other people gathered.
"I''m sorry, I never got to see them clearly," Iden says.
"See, they might still be alive in there." The man says, turning to look at the woman in the front. "If we go in now we might be able to save them."
"It''s still far too dangerous, we can''t risk more people than we already have. I want to save them as much as you do. But if we lose any more people, we will end up putting the village itself at risk." The woman insists.
"Hey kid, do you remember where you saw these people?" They turn to ask Iden. Who nods their head at the question.
"I''m going to look for them. I wouldn''t be able to live with myself if I were to just let them die like this." He says, still looking to Iden. "So can you show us the way?"
"Wait. You don''t plan on bringing this kid back into the dungeon, do you? That place is already dangerous for adults. But you plan to bring a child in there." Fumes the woman.
"It''s fine. Those people tried to help me. I need to do my best to help them in return." Says Iden.
"See, the kid is willing to help." He says, turning to the rest "which of you are willing to help?" He asks.
The remainder of the people. Who up till this point start to look to one other. Each one conflicted as they think about their options.
Though after some time passes they each seem to have made up their minds. Some steeping forwards to stand next to Iden and the man. Others apologizing before stepping away from the cave. Leaving 3 of them in the dungeon and 7 outside.
"I''m Ivan." Says Ivan.
"Iden." Replies Iden. As Ivan looks back to the crowd.
"I''ll make sure to get the others back. As well as all of us. Then we can higher some adventurer to take care of this dungeon." He says those remaining outside the dungeon.
"Just make sure you''re OK. I don''t want to lose you as well." Says the woman to him.
"Don''t worry mom. I''ll make sure of it." Replies Ivan as he starts to walk into the dungeon. The others following after him.

"So where did you get your weapons?" One of the two followers asks Iden. Breaking the silence.
"I found them at the entrance of the dungeon. I figured they were drooped once the bandits started chasing after me." Replies Iden.
"If you want, I could use the sword. I''m actually pretty good with one." continues the follower.
"Don''t listen to her, shes never touched a sword before. Shes just trying to look cool." Cuts in Ivan.
"It''s fine, she can use it if she wants. I''m not very good with it anyway." Says Iden as they hold the blade out to them.
"Thanks, Iden. I''m Liz by the way." She says garbing the sword as Iden holds it out to them. Before continuing "And that guy over there is Nick. He''s quite nervous. But don''t let that fool you. He is the only one in our village to ever be able to use magic."
"Magic?" Questions Iden.
"It''s nothing that impressive. The only spells I can cast are Mana bolt and Mana shield. I barely meet the minimum to unlock the Wizard class." They say.
Hearing this peaks Iden''s interest. Originally the plan had been to simply kill them. But they were making it clear they were worth far more alive than dead. At least for the moment.
Having decided so, Iden takes a good look at them for the first time. Ivan was the tallest of the group, though still only a head taller than them. He had the same mostly brown clothes as the rest of the villagers. But on his back was two pieces of wood. One was in the shape of a circle and was larger than his chest. While the other was a long check of wood, about three times the width of a finder and sharpened on one end.
Nick was the smallest of the group, only a bit taller then Iden. On his back was also a piece of wood, though this one did not come to a point. Instead, it was much thicker, around the area of their hand. With a small slightly transparent black sphere on the end. With Liz being the opposite. Being the tallest of the group, standing at nearly the same high as those bandits that had attacked Iden. With a sword now on their waste, having had no weapon before.
"How do you get classes?" Asks Iden. Hoping to start gathering information, while taking the first turn to the right.
"What do you mean how do you get classes?" Asked Liz, clearly confused.
"I think they mean a combat class." Replies Nick.
"Yes, I don''t have one and was wondering how I would unlock one." Said Iden in an attempt to keep any suspicion at bay.
"I don''t know about any other but Fighter requires you to have at least two weapon skills and at least twenty five in two of the physical stats. Wizard needs you to have cast two different spells from spell molds and have an Intelligence and Memory stat of at least thirty." Answers Nick.
"Oh so do you all have classes then?" Asks Iden.
"No, Nick has the Wizard class and I have the fighter. But Liz doesn''t have any. Next to, of course, commoner and farmer." Replies Ivan.
"Humph, I just haven''t found one that suits me yet. I could get Fighter any time I wanted to." Says Liz in a huff.
At this moment their talking was cut off by growling coming from deeper in the cave. Causing everyone to stare down the tunnel to search for the cause.
Quickly seeing the cause of it, the group saw a goblin at the end of the narrow tunnel. Staring back at the group while growling.
Seeing this, Iden stops in place as the others continue forward. Seemingly preparing for battle.
"Wait, don''t go any more forward." They quickly call out. Realizing what is happening.
"You don''t need to worry about that creature. It''s just a goblin. Even without our classes, it wouldn''t be too much of a struggle for us to kill it." They say back.
"Not that. The goblin is most likely a trap." Shoots Iden. Causing the others to stop in their tracks and look back.
"What, that doesn''t even make sense. How could a goblin be a trap?" Asks Liz.
Iden does not give a reply as they are busy with other things. Namely looking around the tunnels for anything out of place.
"Look down there," they say upon finding what they were searching for. Small holes, barely the size of needles, lining the bottom of the tunnel about halfway to the goblin. "If you go too far something will probably come out of those holes."
"To think we were being so careless inside of a dungeon. It''s a good thing you are with us or we might all have perished here." Says Nick. The goblin still in the same position, growling at them.
As they talk Ivan walks forwards. Using his shaft of wood to press against the ground. When suddenly small metal spikes shoot out from both sides of the cave. Meeting in the middle and locking in place as the goblin starts to walk forwards.
Seeing that the trap seems to have been dealt with. Ivan steps onto the spikes and towards the goblin.
"That could have been really dangerous." He says, stabbing his stick into the goblin. "We are going to need to be more careful if we are going to try and get through this place."
Seeing the goblin dead. The others start to head forwards. Careful as to not step off the spikes and onto the floor.
As they run to catch up. Iden starts to realize something new.
While they might not be able to kill this dungeon due to its control. That doesn''t mean it won''t be able to help others to kill it. Like these people. Though they aren''t extremely perceptive, they had Iden to guide them. But even more importantly, with some warnings, they would most certainly be able to destroy the crystal.
The only problem was that the goblin trap had not been here before. And there was no way of telling how many other traps there might have been added since they last returned to the core room.
As they continued down the tunnel, with further instructions from Iden as which way to go, their conversations continued.
"How did you learn magic?" Says Iden to Nick.
"Well, one day a mage ended up staying in our village for a few days. On the hunt for an evil mage that had fled into the hills in this area. One night when he was talking about what it took for one to become a mage. And it turns out that next to having cast spells I already met all the requirements. Since I was only 12 at the time, he was impressed. And ended up leaving me with some instructions on how to start casting spells as well as a goblin core to make my own wand with." Said Nick with a large inhales to cap off his story. Waving the piece of wood with the sphere on the end.
"Put so much time into that magic of his that he never even properly worked the fields." Chimes in Liz.
"Hey, I always did my share!" Protests Nick.
"Now is not the time to be having this argument guys. The two of you can continue your arguments once we are back and safe." Chides Ivan.
"Sorry." Both of them say in unison. Before all four of them stop and drop to the floor immediately. Just as arrows fly above their heads off into the distance behind them.
Looking further ahead they see more goblins. Each one holding a bow and aiming down the tunnel. Reaching behind their back to grab more ammunition.
Seeing their one chance, the group of four starts to charge forwards. Making sure to reach the group of goblins before they are able to reload. While also watching for any irregularity''s in the cave walls.
Though, not seeing anything wrong, they quickly reached the goblins. With Liz taking the lead to cut them down. Leaving the others with little to do thanks to the cramped tuneless making it next to impossible for each of them to contribute.
This ended up being far worse then they had originally foreseen. Giving the leading goblins time to drop their bows and draw daggers.
Seeing the swiftly changing situation, Liz tried to step back but ended up bumping into Ivan.
Seeing them in trouble with four goblins still left, Ivan quickly reacted. Attempting to tose their dagger into one of the goblins in the back loading their bow. Instead of hitting the second goblin in their shoulder. Forcing it to drop its dagger as its arm fell limp.
During this time, Ivan uses his superior range to stab the goblin in the front. While putting his other arm around Liz to use the wood strapped to his arm to block an arrow that would have hit them in their shoulder.
"We need to keep moving forward or they are going to keep taking shots at us," Iden yells from the back.
Seeming to agree with them, Liz grabs the shield from Ivan''s hand and starts to charge forwards with Ivan on their heal. With Liz quickly finishing off the wounded goblin and Ivan landing a swift bow to the first goblin still holding a bow. And, after quickly blocking another arrow, Liz lands the final blow. Killing the final goblin with a swift slash into its neck.
"Looks like these tuneless are more of a threat then we had thought." Says Ivan panting "Were going to need to be careful in the future or we might really end up stuck."
As he says this, a loud twang sounds rapidly from the end of the tunnel.
Understanding what this is. Nick quickly raises his staff and begins to focus.
As he does, a thick cluster of ten arrows flies at the party. Leaving no space to dodge or attempt to run away.
Though, thanks to Nicks spell going off, a shimmering blue barrier appears between them and the arrows. Glowing a faint blue and being mostly transparent. It is quickly beaten down by arrows.
Each one causing more and more cracks to appear. Slowly spreading across the barrier, threatening to shatter it.
A threat that is realized as the ninth arrow shatters the magical construct. Letting it move a few more feet before meting with a wooden shield.
Seeing only one arrow left, Liz raises her shield to meet it as well. Though this turns out to be a mistake as the arrow is not stopped by the wooden shield. Instead, pricing straight past the wood and into Liz''s side. Causing her to double over forwards.
"Are you OK?" Nick calls out.
"Ya I''m fine." Groans Liz. "Though I don''t think I am going to be able to continue on like this.
"Ya. This place was far more dangerous then we imagined. If we keep going like this were just going to lose our lives as well." Says Ivan. Clearly trying to force himself to remain calm.
"What do you mean by as well?" Asks Nick. His voice beginning to shake.
"That fact that all these monsters are here. Despite us not encountering anyone else means that the dungeon has reset. Something that can only happen when it''s empty." Ivan says, tears starting to appear in his eyes.
"No, we must have just taken the wrong tunnel or something. They must be in here somewhere. Once I get a moment to rest I''ll be good to go and we can head deeper into the dungeon." Liz insisted.
"Even if that was true, that would mean we have no way of finding them. Bringing us in here was the wrong call. It''s far to dangerous. Our best bet is to take a moment to rest before getting out of here. It''s like my mother said. We need to leave this to the professionals."
As their conversation continued. Iden sat away from the party. Terrified that the dungeon had improved itself. Both for the increased difficulty of dealing with it and the increased chance of becoming obsolete and simply being destroyed. They had to find a way of dealing with it fast.
So as the others rest and disused what to do next. It sat and started to plan how to destroy this blasted dungeon.

Seeing that it had removed one of the time constraints they were working under. They turned to the group of villagers it was working with.
"I think our best chance would be to quickly leave. Staying in here to try and recovery just increase the chance of us being attacked again." Says Iden.
"Your right. We can morn once we are back in the village." Says Ivan as he holds out his hand for Liz to grab.
Quickly garbing onto it, Liz pulls herself to her feet. Doing her best not to grab onto the hand with an arrow in it,
"Make sure to keep your guard up. Just because we already went down this path once does not mean it is necessarily safe." Calls out Iden.
"I''m also only going to be able to create one more of those shields. So we''re going to be able to deal with one more of those traps at most." Says Nick.
"That makes matters worse. Is there any way for you to be able to cast more?" Asks Iden.
"No, I''m afraid the Mana core takes time to recharge. And I don''t know of any way to speed that up." Replies Nick.
"Well, we should at least make what preparations we can," Iden says, walking over to pull there dagger out of the goblin. "We might even be able to make use of these weapons. Even if they are a little small."
"If you haven''t used a bow before then I would just leave them. They require a lot of training to use right. And would end up being just as much of a threat to us if you don''t know what you are doing." Says Ivan.
"Ah, so these won''t be of much use to us then. Will they." Iden says while pointing to the bodies.
"You should search them for Mana cores. If you find one it will help to offset the cost of any adventurer we will need to higher." Says Nick.
"Mana core? Like the thing in your staff?" Asks Iden.
"Ya. Just cut em open and take a look around their chests. Shouldn''t be too hard to find. If any of them do have one." Says Liz, while holding the sword out with their good arm. "Also you might as well take this back. It won''t be much use to me in this state."
Quickly walking over, Iden takes their sword back. While handing the dagger over to them and speaking.
"I''ve also only got a single working hand. So you might as well hold onto this for me. Besides, I would feel a lot safer knowing that you were armed." Iden says. Trying to keep their tone warm and kind. Before starting to cut open the remains of the goblins.

"It doesn''t look like there is any cores inside of them. Though, it''s not all that surprising with their rarity. It''s still quite a disappointment." States Nick.
"Ya, finding some cores would have definitely helped. But there''s nothing we can do about it at this point. Better to just get out." Ivan says as he walks to the front of the group. "I''ll take lead with Nick behind me, ready to support if needed. Behind him will be Liz, with Iden taking up rear guard."
Quickly moving into position, they start to move. Heading back the way they originally came from.
The walk back ends up being quite easy. Not running into any new monsters or traps. Arriving back at the entrance with the the seven who decided not to enter waiting for them.
"Thank the gods you returned. You were in there so long I was starting to worry that you weren''t going to come back." Says Ivan mother as she runs forward to hug her son.
As she does this, the others run forward and start to surround the other three. Asking what happened in the dungeon and if they were able to find the others. Though the questions were coming far to fast for them to be able to answer any of them.
"We will tell you everything once we return to the village. But for now Liz is injured. So her treatment needs to come first." Says Ivan. Before helping Liz''s walk by putting hus arm around his sholder and walking out of the dungeon.
Watching them go, Ivan drops themselves to the floor. Having yet to find a solution to their lack of healing.
"Hey, you''re not planning on staying here are you?" Calls out Nick. After stopping to look back to them.
"I don''t think I will be able to walk all the way to your village. I''m just going to rest here." Replies Iden.
"Nonsense. You were willing to go back into the dungeon after being attacked just to help us out. There is no way we are just going to leave you here." Says Nick as he starts to walk back over to them.
Not putting up a fight, Iden lets Nick help them to their feet before supporting them.Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
"See, it''s not so bad. Now let''s get you to the village as well. We need to get you patched up as well." Says Nick, as they also walk out of the dungeon.

That was not as bad as they had been expecting. The time frame would give it some freedom to explore outside the dungeon. As well as hopefully make it so that the Voice would be unable to sense them.
So Iden began to walk back to the village with the others. Trying to avoid conversation were possible as to not say something to give themselves away. While also listening in on the conversations of those around them to learn what they could.
In total, the walk back took around 1 hour and netted them one point of Endurance and one point of Charisma.
Once they reached the village Iden quickly took a look around. The most obvious thing was the buildings. Each one seemingly made nearly completely of wood. They formed two semi-circles around the dirt path cutting through the center of town. With a total of six building on each side. With a taller structure behind each set of homes. Each one being taller, cylindrical, and made nearly inertly of stone. With large fields of grain even further behind that.
"Welcome to our village." Whispers nick to Iden. "It''s not much, but it''s home."
"What''s going to happen now?" Iden whispers back "You recently lost of people didn''t you?"
"We''re going to conduct a funeral for those that died. Then, once the next merchant arrives, we are going to higher adventurers to come and destroy that dungeon." Replies Nick, in a tone much colder than before.
Able to tell that trying to continue that conversation is most likely not a good idea. Iden instead looks to the town once more. Noticing a large group of people looking back at them.
Wondering who they all are. Iden looks up to ask. But quickly notices that the people they are travailing with are lowering there heads. No longer speaking. And, not wanting to seem out of place, Iden quickly dose the same.
"Were you able to find any of them?" One of the people in the village calls out.
"No. We were unable to find them. From what we can tell they most likely died inside of the dungeon." Says Ivan mother, a grave expression present on her face.
Hearing this, some of the people run off back into buildings. While the others still standing on the road start to deal with the news in their own ways. Some breaking into tears, others seeming to flare up in anger, while others still seemed to still be unable to accept the truth. The whole time Iden continued to walk. Trying not to revile that they were the ones who caused their deaths.
The situation only getting worse once they entered the town. As the people started to walk around comforting each other and talking about the times they shared with those who had died.
They were about to try to join in when they felt a tap on their shoulder. Looking behind them, they saw Ivan standing there. Still helping Liz to walk.
"Come on, we need to get you and Liz fixed up before we do anything else." He says, voice wavering.
"I''m fine. I want to stay for the ceremony." Says Liz as she tries to push herself away from Ivan.
"No, you aren''t. And, even if some people suspected we might be having a burial ceremony soon. It will still take time to get everything ready. So if you go now you will still be able to attend the ceremony after." Says Ivan, in a far more forceful tone.
Giving up after hearing that. Liz simply utters a fine before letting Ivan help them over to one of the buildings. Shortly followed by Iden with help from Nick.
Once inside they saw a shorter person sitting at a table. Staring down at it with a blank face.
"Is he OK?" Iden whispers to Nick.
"His father was one of the people who went into the dungeon. He was our villages only healer. His sun was to be his replacement and was being trained by him." He whispers back.
"You doing OK there?" Ivan says, having walked closer.
"I heard the news. My father didn''t make it back did he?" He says. His voice lacking any signs of emotion. Before standing up to be eye level with Ivan. "Did they at least destroy the dungeon?"
"No. We tried heading into it to try and find them. It was far more dangerous then any of us had ever imagined. We never even saw the core." Says Ivan.
"Then what was the point of sending people in there. Now we are going to have to bankrupt the village anyways. Just to higher some adventurers to come and destroy it. Meaning my father died for nothing." Shouts the healer, slamming his fist onto the table. His calm from before replaced by furry.
"If your father hadn''t been so insistent on dealing with this himself. We would have just done this from the start. And no one would need to have died." He yells to Ivan. Before storming out of the house.
What they said seems to be getting to Ivan. As he helps Liz sit down in one of the chairs before taking a seat for himself.
Seeing this, Ivan broke off from Nick to take the seat facing Liz. With Nick quickly following to take the final seat facing Ivan.
"You know he was just angry, right?" Reassured Liz.
"Ya, he seemed to not be very stable when he said that." Says Iden.
"I know that he was just angry. But that still doesn''t change the fact that what he said was true. There was no reason for our village to try and deal with the dungeon on our own." Laments Ivan.
"Maybe we can take care of it." Says Iden. "We were unprepared for the dungeon last time. But if we make more preparations, and train some more. Then we should be able to destroy it."
"You want us to go back in there? Liz still has an arrow in her hand from the last time we tried. Not to mention, you look like you might drop dead at any moment." Replies Ivan.
"He''s right. Our village can''t afford to pay for adventurers to come and deal with this dungeon. And were the only people left in the village with combat jobs. If we get a couple more levels we might be able to conquer the dungeon." Says Liz.
"If we start to kill the monsters without going after the core. I might be able to make a better wand. Which would make progressing far easier? Never mind the stat boosts we would gain from leveling." Says Nick.
"So, you all want to try going after the dungeon again." Asks Ivan, seeming to consider the idea.
"It''s only going to keep getting stronger. If we don''t act fast, we might never be able to." States Iden.
"Your right." says Ivan. Seemingly giving in. "But that still leaves the problem of us being injured. So we are going to need to get treatment and rest first."
Having come to a decision. Liz looks to her hand in frustration. Before gifting her teeth a pulling the arrow out of her hand. Barely holding back a scream.
"What are you doing." Yells Nick.
"Treating my hand. Now go get some of that green paste the doctor always uses." She says. Voice wavering the whole time.
Not knowing what she is talking about. Iden simply sits in place as Ivan and Nick get up and start looking around the building. Quickly pulling open each drawer and pantry in their search.
"Found it," Nick yells.
"Pass it over" replies Ivan. Before quickly garbing it and rushing over to help Liz.
"Took you guys long enough. I was starting to worry the infection would start before you guys found anything." Says Liz, chuckling.
"What were you thinking. You can''t just be doing things like that. You probably caused a bunch of extra damage from that. Not to mention making it take even longer to heal." Berates Ivan.
"I figured that if I took it out sooner, then it would start to heal sooner." She says back.
"You know that''s not how it works." He chides, starting to rub the green paste onto the wound. As Nick starts to wrap a white cloth around it.
"I was just trying to get your minds of everything that''s happening." She apologizes.
Iden just chuckles at this. Revealing a faint smile. Before turning to look to Iden.
"So what are your classes then? We are going to need to start learning to work together if we want to conquer this dungeon." They ask Iden.
"I don''t have any." Replies Iden.
"You don''t have any!? Not even farmer or something?" Gasps Nick.
"No. Is it that strange not to have a class?" Ask a confused Iden.
"Yes. They make life far easier. So people tend to select them the second they unlock one. But since Humans can only have a maximum of 3. With commoner already taking up one slot, it is hard for people like us to amass any amount of strength. But since you don''t have a class yet. You should be able to take two combat classes. Giving you far higher stats and far more skills." Says Nick.
"Oh. So that''s the reason that Liz is so hesitant to become a Fighter and why each of you only has one combat class." Says Iden, finally beginning to understand the situation. "If that''s the case. Why don''t you just keep getting new skills and upgrading them to complete more paths? It seems like you would be able to keep increasing your stats that way."
"How has no one ever taught you this?" Asks Nick. "Everyone is only able to learn a maximum number of none class skills. Normally something like fourteen to twenty. And since theirs no way of knowing till you hit your limit. You need to be very careful with which skills you take."
Iden swallows at this. Realizing how close they had come to making a mistake it would never be able to recover from.
"Since you have no class. You could learn the Fighter and Wizard class. Since they are the only ones we know how to get. Though I doubt we have the time for either." Says Ivan.
"You just got to fight in a way that is natural to you. You will eventually get a class that works for you." Says Liz.
"You should just focus on training your skills. A class is not everything. Especially at low levels like us." Says Nick.
"I''m going to need some time to think about this." Replies Iden. Having no idea what they want to do. Or how long they will have to do it.
"Well, we have plenty of time for the moment." Says Nick.
"Yes, we do. So for tonight, let us celebrate the lives of our friends and family. Then tomorrow we will begin to destroy the dungeon." Says Ivan. Before standing, a new look of determination plastered across his face.
Quickly following suit. The others stand up as well. Before walking out, determined to enjoy the ceremony. And with it, say one final goodbye to the ones they had lost.
