Fine dad, I hope your trip doesn''t get too annoying ok¡± I said to the cell phone I was holding as my dad told me to set the alarm and stay safe. I walked from the kitchen in our new apartment to my new room. Walking in I see the dresser and the two suitcases laid down in front of it. Then there''s the bed in the far right corner and the desk set against the left wall. The chair next to the desk, my laptop and the picture of my mom. Turning my head, I see the few remaining boxes we haven''t unpacked yet. That sat in front of the window screen that leads to the balcony. I really should unpack the rest tomorrow dad would appreciate that. ¡°Bye dad, I''ll call you tomorrow and tell you how my first day of school was,¡°I told him as I sat down in front of my desk. ¡° ya love you too,¡± I said as the call ended.¡± ok guess I might as well make a new entry before bed.¡± ¡°Journal entry #206 high¡± I waved at the small camera in my computer while I adjusted the chair I sat in. I Looking at myself I see the same dark blue eyes with the same black hair going past my ears, same pale skin and same calm bord expression on my face. I was wearing a faded yellow t-shirt I got back when my dad and I did martial arts and black PJ pants. I wonder if I should get a haircut I thought. ¡°It''s been about three weeks and six days since my last entry. ¡°I''ve spent some time thinking about it, and I''m going to keep starting these entries with some hello or something. So if someone ever watched these would get some kind of greeting¡¯ I said. ¡°So the school I''m going to go to. Started last week, and I''m betting it''s going to be boring. But it''s was just teenagers living their lives and said life is full of drama and bullshit. Ya, not looking forward to a new school with new people. Colorado is honestly beautiful, so at least I''ll have something to keep me interested there. Though who knows I might make some friends here or I might not time will tell. I think back on the last month for a few seconds. ¡°So in my last journal entry, I talked how my dad was selected to oversee the foundation of a new office in Colorado. It was scheduled to take about a year, and my dad needed to be on site for it. I get to tag along because it''s just dad and me. Shaking my head a little I check the time it''s 10:24 pm deciding to end this journal entry I continue. ¡° in the end it is what it is and I might as well make the best of it. That and for the next week while my dad is dealing with some fuck up in another office in Nevada. I get the apartment and the car to myself so that will be nice. The alarm is what comes. First, some radio station going on about traffic. I Getting up I look at the clock 7:03. I start my days with stretching more often than not helps wake me up. After about ten minutes of that and a quick shower, the clock shows 7:22. Walking out of the bathroom I look at the apartment I''ll be living in for the next year or so. The place split into five rooms. Two bedrooms and a bathroom. There''s an open kitchen living room mix. Tv on the wall, couch on the other wall, standard apartment for two. Yawning I grabbed breakfast which is just cheerios, banana and I bottle of sweet black tea I recheck the clock 7:30. I''m about halfway through my first spoon full of cheerios a gray screen pops up in front of my eyes with wavy font words. My first thought is as to be expected a variation of ¡®what the fuck.¡¯ Then a voice starts saying what''s on the gray screen ¡°greetings humans of earth my name is dawn I am the God of growth and new beginnings. After a long and heated discussion with the gods that govern your world we have reached a decision¡±. My next thought as this voice which honestly sounded like an excited sports commentator who I think is male. Was if you''re going to read it to us then why the fuck did you flash a gray screen in front of my face, maybe it was because some people were deaf or blind or maybe this guy liked the sound of his voice. ¡°This world and you humans have slowed in your growth as individuals and as a species, so I have brought about a new start for you all. This new system will allow you to view the world and yourselves in a new light¡±. At this point of his explanation, I started to see where this was going.¡± Now the reason this discussion with the other gods that govern your world took so long as I believe that you all should start from the beginning with a clean slate. But other gods have argued that what you have achievements should still count¡±. I honestly still don''t know if its a guy or girl it sounds male but hey who knows with a god.¡± so every skill you''ve practiced every achievement you''ve earned will be at its current level in comparison to the system I have put into place. In one week your world will change, and a true new beginning will commence. And because your gods have expressed a very reasonable concern with how I plan on changing your world all job requirements have been reset to level 1 so all you need is to learn the basics¡± it said with a slight tint to its voice I think it was annoyance. At This point there was a new possibly damming thought came through my mind.¡° oh and one more thing you have to use the skill before it can be unlocked and all other limitations have been listed in your menu¡± it added. The only real thing I could think to do at the moment was to call dad and tell him I might have gone insane. Then the gray box closed and a blue one opened.

The phone started ringing as I debated whether I would except this and move on with my life or start freaking out Getting up I grabbed the phone and answered. ¡° Alexander I called to ask if you''re currently seeing a blue box with states and jobs correct.¡± My father said, he sounded on edge probably because it sounded insane. Hearing him talk about this made me feel better, if he can see it, then I''m not going crazy yet anyways. ¡°Ya I am did you hear a voice that sounded like an overexcited sports commentator talking about the end of the world.¡± I asked because if it was just me, I wasn''t looking forward to being a protagonist in some crazy story. ¡° yes I heard him as well very informative even if all this sounds and looks insane¡± he said. I let out a breath I didn''t realize I was holding I started to talk out what just happened. ¡° So a stang voice tells us we have one week to get prepared for some crazy world-changing event. We have a list of hidden skills we have to rediscover, and now we have jobs with requirements we don''t know about.¡± as I was talking this through, the phone to my right ear I swirled my left arm around and got another box opening.

I wonder if I''m dreaming or hallucinating I decide to ask my dad. ¡° dad did you get a notification about unlocking an air affinity or was that just me¡± I asked. ¡° No son but tell me what you were doing before the notification popped up, ¡° he said in the same calm voice I''ve heard since I was ten. ¡°I was talking this out, trying to figure out what the hell is going on when it opened up,¡± I said waving my left arm around as I paced the living room. Stopping for a second, it hit me. ¡° dad wave your arms around for a bit I think that''s what did it¡± I said. There''s silence for a minute or so before I hear from him again ¡° I didn''t get a notification or anything. Maybe it''s something you have, or you don''t¡± he said as I thought about what else we might have. ¡° dad do you know how to open any of these notifications,¡± I asked. ¡° No, but maybe it has some trigger or code word we can find¡± he responded and for the next minute or so we started saying any words that sounded like they would work and thankfully it paid off.

After about five minutes of saying random words, we figured out at least some of this crap. It apparently works like a game system, which is an easy way to see growth like that fucking god wanted. Still, it starts when you say [menu] then you say [status] which opens a window with your health, stamina, and mana, as well as the job list. Then there''s [skill list] and [afinatie list] which are mostly blank with question marks. ¡°So dad what do you think we should do now,¡± I asked because at this point I''ve got nothing. The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings. ¡°I think you should go to school maybe someone there has a better idea what''s going on. It will give you a chance to ask others if they know anything else¡± he said. ¡°So even with the world about to end I can''t get out of school huh¡± I responded. ¡° is this really a time for jokes Alexander.¡± ¡°No, but it''s important to keep a positive outlook remember,¡± I said ¡° you have a point their Alexander, be particular things are going to get hectic soon. Als,o, you know the boxes with the knives and swords I collect ¡° he said. ¡°Yes, you want me to take some with me,¡± I asked. ¡°Y, a, I want you to use them. Opened them I found his collection of knives, swords, and hatchets (yah my dad¡¯s a weapon nut). I''m just glad he wanted for quality over ecstatic. Grabbing two bowie knives, he got off of some website. The blades were just black at about 7 inches, and the grips were a dark grey about 8 inches long. Letting out a slow breath I Stepping into the middle of the room. I started swinging them around for a few minutes with no notifications or anything. I decided to sit down for a minute and clear my head. Closing my eyes, I started breathing in and out. In hold for a few seconds out I kept that going for a few minutes as I thought through my problem. Meditations probably a skill I can learn and I''m sure I''ll have after I''ve come down. I don''t know why though could it be intentional or do I need to do some special action to get this new system to work. Thinking back to when I first learned how to meditate it was when I was learning martial arts. The instructor said it was meant to help you find yourself and calm your mind. He was right even if all I wanted to do was hit something back then. But after meditation, we would go through a martial arts form. Opening my eyes, I wondered if it was that easy I stood up. I Look at the knives in my hands. I started going through the first form I learned. Going into a front stance my right leg bent until my foot blocks my knee and my left leg unbent as I lean slightly forward. Taking the knife in my right hand, I aim it ahead and moving my left arm to my side. I take a forward step switching to a front stance with my left leg and moving my left arm forward keeping the knife pointed straight ahead. Twisting around on my feet so I''m in a front stance facing the opposite direction I repeat it again and again. After the fourth time, I get a list of notifications

Looking at all the notifications, I started to see what was happening. An easy way to chart your progress, bonuses for any noticeable growth and all just a word away. That fucking god really thought this out. I sigh I grabbed two hatchets and got ready to go through form one with them. After another 15 minutes of trying different weapons, I got a list of notifications. The weird thing about these skills so far is that they seem to be catch-all skills. When I got ¡®One-Handed sword mastery¡¯ it was level 6. I was ''Dual wielding'' two short swords. Then I moved onto a claymore my dad got at a renaissance fair. After getting a skill called Two-Handed sword mastery, I got another level in ¡®One-Handed sword mastery.¡¯ It seems that different types of a weapon just fall under that skill or skills similar to it there may be multiple sword skills out there. But at the same time, I can increase the skills level faster if I use different types of swords. There''s probably a limit somewhere with how many levels I can get by just swinging different types of swords, axes, or, knives. Wait why are the two handed and one handed swords mastery skills different what the hell is with this system. Shaking my head I look at the other interesting thing I found out after going through [form one], so many times with different weapons I got it to 99%. That''s not the interesting thing when I tried to figure out what form one did. I found that I needed to say [skill description] then the skill. That took me longer than I want to admit. If I didn''t already have a list of skills and windows opening up, I would think I was crazy. Back to [form one] after getting its description I had a moment to wonder if I should have stayed in martial arts.

Form one gives a boost. The part about ¡®only having one hand to hand form active at a time¡¯ makes me think that I could have more than one form active if it was for something else. Saying [menu] and choosing [skill list] lead to this happening.

I''ve got seven skills out of a question mark; fucking dawn could have made this a little easier on us. I walk out of my dad''s room to get ready for school. Rechecking the clock, it shows 7:55 so I''ll probably be late for my first day of school. Smiling a little, I''ll at least have a good excuse for why I''m late after all it''s the end of the world and this time they may even believe me. Grabbing a piece of paper and one of the pens lining on the counter I start writing down what I know and what I suspect. To gain a weapon skill you have to use it like a weapon not just swing it around. The system responds to voice commands like [menu], [status], [skill list], [affinity list] and who knows what else. Weapon skills can be leveled by using different types of the weapon. There may be a limit to how many times you can do this. Form skills are passive boosts. At every ten levels of a skill, you get an experience bonus. Then what a suspect can be done. More than one form can be active at a time what those forms are, are still unknown. Skills have to be actively used to rediscover or gain. Elemental affinities are discovered by interacting with the element maybe.This text was taken from Royal Road. After 5 notifications I''m wondering if that god wanted to fuck with us more than help us grow. Adding to the skill list and then what I know list. Stopping in the middle of the intersection I quickly look around I don''t see any other cars. I start driving again. Wondering if I can minimize notification while they pop up or something. Because when I get into a fight (there''s no way I''m not getting into one in this situation)these fucking windows might honestly get me killed. Sighting I say [menu] ¡° notification minimization, notification stopping, [notification list active].¡± i Looking at this I have to think that dawn is passively trying to kill us more than he''s actively trying to, at least for this week maybe. Focusing on my driving and contemplating praying to Dawn so that I can tell him to fucking rot. I pass main street head heading towards the high school, and possibly more information about this fucking apocalyptic game world was being forced into. Maybe I''m just being optimistic on that but hey, optimistic is better than just sitting around waiting for the world to end I hope. First Encounters It took me 8 minutes to get to the high school and park dads car. As luck would have it, I didn''t get any more notifications, but I did get lost for a minute or two. I Sigh noticing that the parking lot is about half full, probably meaning that there''s not a lot of people here right now. Grabbing the list and the satchel I put in the car yesterday. I glanced in the side view mirror to check how I looked. A little paler than normal and a little shaky. My dark blue short-sleeved shirt had a few new wrinkles in it. I glancing at my black slacks and tennis shoes. I have to wonder if It''s because it''s my first day in a new school or the world ending that has me so out of sorts. I letting out another sigh I open the car door and start walking through the parking lot to the school en. I really should have learned the school''s name by now but the worlds ending so it probably won''t matter. I thought with a shrug as I studied the building. It was like the person who designed it thought adding different squares together would look good. The building was just a large square with a part of the side facing me like a glass building that leads up almost to the roof. There was an overhang probably for shade I think it was the Jim. It connected to the rest of the school, but it was like a crate being put next to a rectangle lad on its side. The rectangular part of the school looked pretty normal a few windows with brick walls space between them. That part of the building leads to a nice looking square part of the school its overhang had more of a curve to it. The building was plain looking but that in itself was nice. A few other people were walking towards the doors in the ¡®plain¡¯ part of the school, so I followed them. Some looked scared, others just nervous a few looked expectant or maybe excited. But hay it''s just another day of high school in the apocalypse. As I watch them, I had to wonder what would happen to them, to me, to everyone in the coming weeks. Shaking my head at the thought, I focused on what I could do now. Get inside, learn what other people have figured out, and figure out what the hell else this system has that I could use. Taking a deep breath as got nearer to the door I passed two people talking in low voices. One a muscular guy with blond hair, green eyes and a nervus frown on his face. The guy was probably 5¡¯11 maybe 6 feet a little taller than me anyways. He wore a plan sage green shirt and blue jeans. The image of a quarterback I sat next to back in was Washington flashed in my mind as I noted him. He was most likely in one sport or another, but I would put money on football. The other person he''s talked to was a girl with red hair, almost white skin with freckles and strangely she had blue eyes. Her face showed a borderline snarl on it as she spoke to him. Maybe a lovers spat or just a disagreement of some kind. She wore a red and black plaid shirt with the sleeves cut off and a white tank top under it. She also had on blue jeans, I expected them to be torn, but they weren''t, old and worn yes but not torn. She had a pendant around her neck. I didn''t think she was an overly strict religious person faithful yes but not to the letter. As I passed them, I wondered why I was so sure what they were. Stopping at the door, I just blink a few times before I start laughing. A mangled sound almost hysterical. Images and memories of the last few years ago flashing in my head. Me sparring with the other people in my old martial arts classes. My dad''s businesses parties and the hours of numbing boredom. The need to understand why I felt so empty and angry after my mom passed. Watching, learning, and questioning myself and everything around me. Just to know fucking why it all happened, why I felt the way I did, why the world and everything else seemed to end for dad and me. All of those years, all that time, all that desperate pointless work to see what was wrong and In the eyes of Dawns system I only had 19 levels in a skill to show for it. It was funny in a way that made me want to stab Dawn with a goddamn claymore. Time plus tragedy equals comedy as they say. I have had enough time to make my peace with it all even if it hurts. Still, I couldn''t really feel that much anger at it all. The system gave a level that equaled what my past experiences would be in regards to whatever the system viewed to be level 100 of a skill. I practiced the skill, so the system gave me what to it that practice meant level 19/100. Now I had a skill that could likely help me get more information and possibly even an idea what it takes to get a job in regards to the system. It was funny in away just not one I really liked. As my laughter stopped, I looked around and noticed a few other looking at me. Some seemed apprehensive; others looked almost relieved like the mere fact someone else was reacting to this all strangely helped them calm down. The two people I had just walked passed looked surprised. The guy''s expression turned sympathetic while the girl took a step closer and started talking. ¡° Are you ok? ¡± she said sounding and looked genuinely concerned. I was a bit surprised she could be concerned about a complete and utter stranger. But maybe that was just the kind of person she was. ¡° Yes I mean I''m as ok as anyone can be with the world as we know it is coming to an end ¡± I responded ¡°I just rediscovered another skill and started thinking about what it meant. You know about how work I put into it and what the system thought all my work was worth. It was funny in a sad kind of way ¡° I said with a faint chuckle. There was most likely an added reward at every ten or twenty levels Maybe more. ¡° skill description? ¡° she asked looking surprised then frustrated and finally letting out a groan as her head falls into her hands. ¡° Descriptions, they have descriptions, of course, they have descriptions this is a video game now, so explanations are a thing ¡° she grumbled. I may have just explained something obvious that she just hadn''t had thought of or was too distracted to do. The world had just bean forcible change in seconds like three hour ago after all. Though I wasn''t any different, it hadn''t occurred to me till I literally watched it happen. I figured I should just start pushing the conversation forward. Maybe I could get something out of this. Maybe help a person survive longer if everything fell apart like I was expecting. Best to expect that everything will fall apart before you have a chance to do anything. From the look of shock on his face and the silence that followed. I guessed he had no idea how I knew this or was trying to find a way to deny it. Next, I asked if I want to add the experience. I ignored that one over the fact I could feel Mana flowing in me and well magic I could feel magic¡±. He said with a true kind of wonder on his face and in his voice.¡° After a few tries I started moving it around then I got a ¡®Mana Manipulation¡¯ skill. I could move it around, but I wanted to see it not just feel it. I kept trying to move the ¡®Mana¡¯ out of me, but something was missing till I thought to try adding one of my affinity to it. I had no idea how to do that, so I grabbed one of the pieces of wire and tried moving the magic into it. It felt like an eternity as the ¡®Mana¡¯ pooled in my hand then moved to the wire. The wire started to glow slightly, and I tried to move the ¡®Mana¡¯ in it. The ¡®Mana¡¯ moved, and the metal followed, and I got another list of notification ¡®Spell Crafting level 1¡¯ ¡®Spell Crafted Metal Control 1%¡¯ ¡®Mana Infusion level 1¡¯. Then I got two new job notifications ¡®Mage¡¯ and ¡¯Enchanter.¡¯ He said. That didn''t make much sense how did he get two jobs at the same time. ¡° how did you unlock them at the same time ¡° I asked. ¡° I didn''t ¡®Mage¡¯ had requirements like ¡®Mana Manipulation level 20¡¯ 1 or more ¡®Elemental Affinities¡¯ 1 or more ¡®Magic Spells 15% mastery¡¯. Wile ¡®Enchanter¡¯ had ¡®Mana Manipulation level 40¡¯ ¡®Mana Infusion level 25¡¯ ¡®Spell Crafting level 10¡¯. They all had this parenthesis next to them with a (1), so I shouldn''t have been able to get one let alone all three of them ¡°. He said as I looked at him. That was a large amount of information, but at least someone else has been trying to figure this shit out. I also got a bunch of new skills to add to the list and an explanation of how to get a job. The part Dawn spoke of the all job requirements have been reset to level one made more sense now. So for the next week, we have a chance to be about anything we want as long as we have the skills for it. This guy didn''t seem to know that part, but he did say he ignored the whole speech. I decided to fill him in on the apocalyptic hole game we were all playing now. The difference between Practies and Aplication Stepping into the common room and confirming that it was a cafeteria was about what I expected. There was about 40 or so student most looked uncertain, some were contemplative, and a few seemed excited. The talking was quiet and cautious, but I was still able to hear a few pieces of conversations in the room. The cafeteria was full of roundtables, and a few booths to one side almost looked like a restaurant. Some people were huddled around talking. "what do you think that voice meant by jobs and levels." "I figured out that driving was a skill." "this is all some kind of joke right. I mean theirs no way any of what that voice said was real". I made my way to one of the empty tables close to where I entered the room. It gave me a decent view of the room as well as being close to the more talkative people in the room. As I sat down, I grabbed the paper with what I figured out so far and added the [racial traits] as well as the ''Observation'' skill to the what I know list. Then I went to the what I suspect list and added that some skills need to be a high level to unlock others. Like how ''Mana Manipulation'' was something you could get after getting ''Meditation'' to level 20/100. I also added that just having a weapon skill didn''t mean you would unlock a job there was more to it. I sighed as I thought about what jobs could be out there, If there could be jobs like Mage and Enchanter them really what couldn''t there be. I also added the requirements for the Mage, Tinkerer, and, Enchanter jobs to my what I know list to be safe. When I finished, I looked over the room again to see if I could find any other new information. After a few tries, I figured out how ''observe'' worked all I had to do was focus on the other people in the room. Most people were just vague feelings and odd bits of information. One guy seemed lucky, and another girl was a little faster than me, while the boy next to her is having a mild breakdown over the world ending. Hmm, I wonder if that counts as a debuff something to keep in mind. As I looked over people, I heard some loudly talking. "I''m telling you I can lift like twice as much as I used to after I got the Athlete job. I can really move now to its awesome". The speaker has brown hair cut close to his head. and was built like a bodybuilder maybe two inches taller than me with broad shoulders. The guy looked like he spent more time in the gym then he did anywhere else, I wonder what his ''Intelligence'' state is. That thought brought a smirk to my face which leads to me laughing a moment later. He was an Athlete, and he was only level 3 which meant I could see more of his states. I am really going to have to ready those skill descriptions at some point later tonight I''m not sure what exactly ''observation'' can do.

Strength at 20 huh I wonder how much of that was the job. I wonder how skills and states affect the outcome of a fight. I can''t see his skills. I wonder if I need a different skill than ''observation'' or if I need a higher level of it. Might as well see if that half-decade of martial arts has any practical applications. I mean if I''m going to end up fighting some monstrosity at some point then why not start with a guy double my Strength. Seems about as reasonable as I can get in this new kind of hell. While I was contemplating this Jonathon noticed I was watching him and decided to call me out on it. "So you gonna keep looking at me or are gonna say something asshat." My first response was to blink then I realized I was staring. My second was to started panicking for a moment before responding. "uh oh sorry I was using a skill sorry about that" as I spoke a realized that I might have just fucked up. "oh ya what kinda skill was it huh." as he said this he walked closer and seemed to puff up. It was a little disconcerting and made me feel somewhat small, but it wasn''t really notable. What was notable was the few new notifications that just popped up in the corner of my vision. Ignoring the guy as he walked towards me, I checked them.

He looked irritated possibly offended, and it just pissed me off. I was planning on starting a fight anyways so might as well anger him a little more just for spite. " so is ''Intimate'' the best you can do or is a temper tantrum all you have left." As I said this, I had gotten up from the table stepped to the side making a little more room. I gave the guy a big smile and waited for his response. the fist aimed at my head was expected, and the follow-up jab to my chest was pretty standard for a guy with more muscle than training. Strength over skill has always seemed somewhat lame to me. Stepping back and to the left away from the table. I dogged the first blow aimed at my head but the second clipped my right shoulder as I slid by. Jonathan''s attack opened his left side specifically the area under his left armpit. Using his punch to increase my momentum I focused. Twisting my hips, I bent my left knee and threw a left hook twisting my wrist on contact with his ribcage under the left armpit. Apparently, it was very effective because he fell to one knee and brought both his hands to his left side. I then drove my right knee into his solar plexuses. He dropped after that with a small grown, and I got some more notifications.

41.7 damage from two attacks Jesus criest his health was 130; I just knocked him down to 88 health. My skill in unarmed combat isn''t even 30, and I still hurt him that much. Fuck what kind of damage can someone do, what kind of damage can some take. Whats with the full force thing on my damage calculator. I was lost in these thoughts as I looked over my notifications. So I didn''t see Jonathan start to get up or the fist that cracked across my cheek a moment later. There was a flashing notification in the corner of my vision after that, but my health was what I was really looking at. I have a health of 100, so the 18.9 damage was around what I expected Jonathan had some skill in ''Hand To Hand Combat'' probably. The next blow hit my side I moved away from it but still received 15.6 damage, and I figured out what high strength compared to skill meant cuz I was at about a third of my health. Stepping to the same side I did when I hit his ribs. I moved a step back and brought my led up into a crescent kick with as much force as I could manage. As he turned to attack me again. I connected with his jaw as his head moved in my direction. After that, he was on the ground again this time I used ''Observe.''

Notifications are really annoying I sat under a tree at a park near the school after the fight. I was still buzzing with adrenaline and loving the feeling. I keep forgetting how great feeling my blood pumping can be. Sure my cheek hurts, my body aches and my shoulder burns. But I got new skills and found out that half a decade of martial arts can be useful in a fight, who knew. I thought with a mental chuckle. There was a sudden pain in my cheek, bringing me back from my adrenaline high. Rowanne was checking my cheek "it just seems to be bruised and swelling a bit. There''s nothing that would need medical attention right now so your fine". She says as I sit there and read over my notifications a little more closely. First, I looked over my final attack.

Does that mean that the strength attributes averaged or that the system adds or subtracts damage to my attacks when using different parts of my body?
