《Getting big in the Big Blue》 Chapter 1 I''ve never been someone particularly attached to my own life, but despite that, even I can safely say that dying sucks. I wish I could claim to have died heroically, having sacrificed myself to save a helpless child from the evil truck of doom. However, that''s not the truth of the matter. No, my death was much, much less dignified. I died while at work from a sudden heart attack, and because I worked as an ocean biologist... Well, my colleagues weren''t exactly in the best situation to help me. It''s sad, really. I never had sex, never found myself a boyfriend... Hell, I never even went on a date. My family and I weren''t even that close, considering they all thought of me as a huge disappointment. So, I''m proud to say that when I randomly found out that I could still, well, feel alive, my first thoughts were: ''Why the hell am I alive? Is this reincarnation? But I''m not a Buddhist!'' I was so sure of my own death because it hadn''t been an instantaneous thing. I''d had to sit there as my own faculties fled from my control, as the blood going to my brain and organs stopped, as everything slowly shut down... Yeah, I was going to get nightmares from this, wasn''t I? Rest in peace my lovely peaceful sleep. You will be dearly missed. Oh, yes. The whole being reborn thing. I should probably do something about that! ... Or not. I''m tired. Like, I can''t seem to even... think... anym... o...r...
Good news! I''m back from the land of the dead to give the living a new haircut! Just kidding, I can''t cut hair to save my own skin. Which should be obvious considering the wholeme being dead thing. Anyways, good news! After a very, very long time of fading in and out of conscious thought, I can now almost feel as though I''m an actual living creature again, and not just in a coma. Anyways, I''ve had time to think about it. I''m enclosed in something hard, and I''m pretty sure it''s not the belly of a human, because I sure as hell can''t feel any kind of appendages that might resemble a pair of legs... or arms. The author''s tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon. So, either I''m some freaky mutated monster, which would be cool, or I''m in an egg. Gross. So, I wait. And wait. And wait. And then Iwait some more. Ain''t this a bunch ofbloody fun. Ah. There it is. The little mental alarm bells going off in whatever head my soul/spirit/whatever possesses. Thank you kind instincts for the reminder, now... Push you shitty maggot, push like you mean it! ... I didn''t make it. Rip. Okay, try again. This time, a small crack appears on the section I''m working on, and after a couple of minutes, I finally break the damn thing. Aaaand I immediately regret it. My eyesight sucks, but even with it I can tell that this is definitely an egg, and that I definitelylook like a snake. How can I tell? Well, I can feel my own body, and I definitely feel neither arms nor legs. I can''t even blink, and there''s water rushing into my eyes. Around me, there are at least several hundred other eggs, and we''re all locked in a cave. Also, we''re underwater! I''m beginning to feel as though staying dead might just have been the better option. As if to mock me, a small screen hovers into existence in front of my eyes. Congratulations for breaking out of your cage! Stay strong, little one, for the trials ahead will be hard! For being the first to successfully hatch, you have gained 3 extra status points! Intelligence scanning... Sentient intelligence found. Status Screen unlocked.

Yup. I''m fucking pathetic, and apparently, I''m also an idiot. Yay me. I should probably panic now. ... Why am I so calm? Ever since I died, during those last few moments, I know I was panicking. But, now... I can''t feel anything. Monsters don''t have emotions. Oh. Thank you, cursed screen of hell, torture, and everything that is, was, and ever will be evil. I ignore the damned thing for the time being as I examine my surroundings in more detail, and I am suddenly made painfully aware of the dull gnawing in my stomach. I hesitate for a moment. I remember reading from somewhere that reptilian newborns eat their shells at birth, but... I don''t think snakes did... Oh well. I awkwardly (clumsy as hell) waddle my way over to the small piece of my shall that I pushed away while leaving my egg. Feeling giddy, I bite the thing. It tastes exactly as I expected. Like shit. I promptly let go. Ew. Feeling like a teenager choosing to ignore their vegetables, I woman up and swallow the thing hole. It tastes like shit, but it fills my stomach, at least. Now, my instincts are screaming at me to get out of the cave as soon as possible. However, I do not think I can do that in good faith. I am a small, weak, helpless little snake. A fucking herring can probably kill me, if I judged my size correctly. However... It''s a good thing there are literally thousands of experience points lying all around me. I never claimed to be a good person... Err, snake. Because if I did, it was a lie. Sorry. Chapter 2 I''ll admit. It took me quite some time to get my act together and figure out how exactly I was supposed to even move. Being a tini tiny sea snake with no arms or legs to speak of made the act of swimming quite the headache to figure out. Nonetheless, after a couple minutes of random waddling, I more or less understood that to swim, I basically just had to move my tail from side to side. A small victory, but one that I gladly took. Then, I had to sit down for a moment. In life, I wasn''t a very sociable, attractive, nor even outstanding person. I hated sports then, but considering the hundreds of fictions I read back then... I don''t have much of a choice. I curled myself up next to my now broken egg, and considered what I wanted to do in this life. I''ve always loved order and routine, but that would be an ill-afforded luxury here, considering that even the animals in my previous world had to ferociously fight just to scrape by. And in this world that apparently had a system of sorts... Yeah. It doesn''t look good. I could be a supremely venemous snake, if the poison stat adhered to it''s namesake. However, that would hardly help me right now, would it? I had barely escaped from my own egg, and that had been a struggle in on itself. How the hell was I supposed to break all these other eggs to get to the juicy bits inside with mere poison? I hovered over the various stats, trying to figure out which ones did what. Eventually, the system decided to take pity on me. Strength - Muscle mass, pure physical strength. Constitution - The ''defense'' stat. Makes your body tougher and increases regeneration. Dexterity - Basically agility. Makes your body more flexible and increases the body''s reaction speed. Intelligence - The mental capacity of a creature. Allows for faster process of thoughts and more complex thinking. Wisdom - The magical capability of a creature. Increases mana pool and regeneration. Poison - Special stat of certain creatures, makes your poison deadlier and more efficient. I considered my choices, but eventually, the answer was obvious. For as much as I wished I could be a magician... I had no idea how to even see my own mana pool, much less use it. Hence, I invested 1 point into constitution, and the remaining two into strength.Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Immediately, I felt the effects of the investment. I felt pleasant tingles travel down my body as though someone was massaging me. It felt heavenly, but alas, it only lasted for a scarce few seconds. When I came back from my high, I couldn''t really tell the difference from before, unfortunately. Nonetheless, I eyes the juicy-looking egg next to my own. It was a tad bit smaller than my own, and the snake inside it didn''t seem to be even trying to escape it. Good. I moved myself over to the egg, warily keeping an eye around me, afraid our mom would pop up or something. It was a stupid worry, but I couldn''t help it. What I was about to do felt really, really evil. Hesitating on how to proceed, I attempted to coil around the egg, barely managing to wrap around it once. Then, I flexed my muscles as hard as I could. The egg seemed to barely feel my attempts, but I didn''t give in. As a marine biologist, I was far, far too aware of the incredibly miniscule chances that newborns of any marine species have at growing up. I didn''t want to be helpless when I left this cave. Thus, I chose to ignore the painful ache across my body and instead focused on pressing down on the egg as hard as I could. Eventually, I felt, rather than heard, a small crack form. Encouraged, I pressed on even harder. My muscles were basically screaming at me by now, but i didn''t give in. Finally, a minute later, the egg gave in. A delicious-smelling liquid drifted out of the broken spot in the egg. With a vigor I didn''t even think I had, I smashed my face against that spot, finally breaking through. There was a disgusting-looking half-fetus, half-snake in the egg. I had little mercy for such a gross being, and with the delicious smell drifting out from it, I felt my instincts cloud my mind as I was driven to a frenzy. I dragged the fetus out of the egg before taking vicious bites out of it. I would have eaten it whole, but it was a bit too big for that. When I finished devouring the entire thing, which must have been at least half my own body weight, I felt as though waking up from a lucid dream. I stared into nothingness for a few seconds as a couple notifications popped up at the edge of my vision, but I ignored them and considered what I''d just done. I... Murdered something that hadn''t even had the chance to be born. And... I felt nothing. No disgust, no guilt, no happiness. I felt like an ampty void. I truly was a monster. Newborn (egg) Snakeling killed. Exp granted. Skill (Bite Lv. 1) now Lv. 2 I felt incredibly sleepy now. My stomach felt full, and I could see my body bulging a bit from all the snake flesh I''d devoured. I settled myself down next to my egg as sleep gradually overtook me. It was particuarly awkward because I couldn''t close my eyes. Nonetheless, my mind eventually shut down, allowing me to drift into blissfull nothingness. Chapter 3 While I slept, I dreamed about my days back in college. It was a rough dream, as usual. Bullies were everywhere, and I could do little to defend myself. It was almost nostalgic. Nonetheless, that was nothing but a dream. Real life was, alas, just as bad. I slowly awoke, still finding it awkward that I couldn''t close my eyes. My body felt different from the last time I was awake. I looked at the egg I hatched from. It had become significantly smaller than before, meaning only one thing. I was a bit bigger now. Yay. Looking around, I saw how some other eggs in the cave had now hatched, but I couldn''t see any of my kin in the cave. They''d probably just gone by their instincts and noped out of here. But I wasn''t willing. I swiped away the notification that popped up in my mind informing me of my status, although why it appeared was a mystery. Instead, I slithered my way over to a random egg close by. I was now significantly larger than before, having grown in just one night. Which, by the way, made absolutely no scientific or even reasonable sense, but God knows I''m thankful for it anyways. Breaking this new egg took much less effort than before. In fact, it almost looked as though it imploded when I applied my full strength to constricting it. The little snake-fetus inside looked a lot more mature than the previous one, but it still stood no chance against me. I quickly ripped it apart without mercy and swallowed all of it. Newborn (egg) Snakeling killed. Exp granted. I was a bit disappointed at the lack of level-ups of any kind, but at least I didn''t instantly crash this time. Feeling more confident, I swam over to one of the bigger eggs around and got to work shattering it too. This egg had, compared to the other eggs around, a little bit of a redder hue, and it was also at least 25% bigger. Nonetheless, it was still fairly easy to crush it now that I got the hang of it. Inside it, the fetus looked almost like a full snake. It had red-green scales, compared to the previous mere green of the other fetuses I ate. Still, fancy colors didn''t save it from the fate of being torn to pieces and swallowed. Stolen story; please report. Newborn (egg) Pepper Snakeling killed. Exp granted. Skill (Constriction Lv. 1) gained. As I suspected, the snake was of a different species. I was a bit disappointed at not having leveled up yet, but the skill was nice. I was still a bit unsure of what exactly skills did, so I tried to coax the system into telling me the answer by constantly hovering my mental... clicker? I don''t know what to call it. Anyways, eventually, the system figured out my silent question. Skill (Bite Lv. 2) - Grants extra damage to any bite attack. Each level increases bonus damage and gives correctional aid to bite attacks. Skill (Swim Lv. 1) Allows user to swim more efficiently. Skill (Constriction Lv. 1) Grants extra damage to any constriction attack. Each level increases bonus damage and gives correctional aid to constriction attacks. Well, that wasn''t very helpful, although the correctional aid part was weird, and no matter how much I tried to coax it, the system staid stubbornly silent. I huffed in my own mind. I knew I was very close to becoming full again, and I had a feeling I would be forced into a coma again if that happened. Although I lacked evidence, I suspected this instant-growth thing, despite being risky, was probably an evolutionary response in order to make individuals grow as fast as possible, regardless of the risk. Well, I could use some extra weight... God, I never thought I would say that. I wasn''t exactly the thinnest person in my previous life. Rolling my eyes in annoyance, I swam over to yet another egg, which was quickly crushed. I did indeed note that it was a bit easier to wrap around and crush the egg, and I had a very, very faint sense of... something... tell me where to crush for maximum damage, but it was so faint it was basically useless. I quickly ate the fetus inside, and at last, the much-awaited notification came. Newborn (egg) Snakeling killed. Exp granted. [Nameless] Has reached Lv. 2. 3 Status Points grants. I was a little disappointed at the small number of points granted, but it was still alright. I could already feel the claws of the coma trying to drag me into oblivion, so I swiftly dumped the points into my status.

At this point, I didn''t really see much use in anything but the physical stats. Although being smarter sounded good, I already had enough mental faculties for now, and what I needed was a stronger body. As for magic? Yeah, no. Useless. I struggled with myself to reach my previous napping spot and barely made it there before my body basically shut down on me. I really hoped this wouldn''t become a common occurrence because it sucked. Big times. This time, however, my sleep was much, much better than the last one. I could constantly feel pleasant tingles running down my mind, and although it was hard to think coherently during this sleep... It felt good. Really good. I would say it was like sex, but I never got the chance to do the deed, so... Rip. If I''d been more conscious, I would have asked myself whether snake sex was like human sex. Thankfully, I wasn''t, or I''d probably have been disgusted-but-not-disgusted with myself. Chapter 4 Waking up for the second time was, more or less, just as unpleasant as the first time. I stretched quite a bit, trying to get rid of the dull ache of my muscles. Thankfully, unlike last time, my dreams were pretty pleasant. Still, it''s most likely a very bad idea to keep dropping down in comas after eating. Hopefully, my body doesn''t pull this shit on me anymore. At this point, although I was still very much uncomfortable with my new body, I could pilot it efficiently. Judging, by comparison, I would say that most eggs around here were around the size of quail eggs. Now, my body was around the length of a small garden snake, not more than 30 or 40 centimeters. Nonetheless, it was still leagues ahead of what I''d started out with. I felt stronger too, which was pretty nice. During my sleep, almost 80% of the remaining eggs had hatched, judging by the various empty remains. In fact, there was an egg hatching this very moment. I quickly swam over to the egg, curious. After a brief struggle, the egg broke and a very small snake popped out. It quickly tried to swim away, but I wasn''t having any of it. I caught it in my jaws, easily piercing through its newborn scales. The small thing didn''t make any noise, but it tried to struggle out of my grip, even trying to bite me. I wasn''t feeling particularly playful, so I ate it whole. Alive. It felt funny having a living being squirming it''s way down my throat and into whatever counted as my stomach. Nonetheless, to the me of today, this was naught but a snack. Newborn Snakeling killed. Exp granted. Skill (Inhale Lv. 1) gained. Ignoring the damned messages, I made my way over to some of the remaining eggs. At this point, it was pointless to waste time wrapping myself around them, so instead, I smashed my head against them, breaking them after a couple of hits. Quickly eating up the snake-fetuses, I quickly got to work eating every last snake remaining around here. The exp they granted was so meager that, even after 8 of them were devoured, I still hadn''t leveled up. Nonetheless, I was nice and full now and even received a couple of new and kinky notifications. Skill (Headbutt Lv. 1) gained. Skill (Headbutt Lv. 1) now Lv. 3 Skill (Bite Lv. 2) now Lv. 4 Satisfied for now, I decided that the remaining eggs could wait for me, and instead took the opportunity to explore the cave I was in. It wasn''t particularly big, but it still took me over 30 minutes to explore everything. Other than the area filled with eggs, everything else was more or less untouched. I even found the exit to the outside world, and I will admit, if I could have, I would have gasped. This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there. The sight before me was simply put: Magnificent Schools of small fish swam in great hordes, corals lined the bottom in beautiful patterns. Bigger fish prowled around, occasionally snatching up whatever crustacean or fish came within their range. I could see the waves rolling at the top of the water, and I could even faintly make out an endless expanse if I strained my eyes. And, I will also admit that my first thoughts, upon seeing one of my own kin, a small sea snake not much smaller than me be devoured by a large, spiked fish in a single gulp, was ''holy shit, I don''t want to leave my cave'' And so, like the coward I am, I immediately fled back into my cave, new determination at bullying all those weaker than me and fleeing anything too big for me to handle renewed. I quickly got to work dismembering any and all eggs that still hadn''t hatched. By the end of it, I''d slaughtered at least two dozen eggs and even a couple newborns. [Nameless] Has reached Lv. 3. 3 Status Points granted. [Nameless] Has reached Lv. 4. 3 Status Points granted. Skill (Bite Lv. 4) now Lv. 6 Skill (Headbutt Lv. 3) now Lv. 5 Skill (Inhale Lv. 1) now Lv. 2 Skill (Swim Lv. 1) Now Lv. 2 I held off of investing the points for as long as I could, as I didn''t want to risk going into a coma yet again. By the end of it, my belly felt as though it would burst from the amount of yolk and newborn babies I''d devoured. By now, several hours had passed, and more or less all of the eggs had hatched or been devoured by me. I''d been lucky to catch a number of newborns trying to leave the cave, but at least 95% made it out safely. Still, I was satisfied. I could feel the cold grip of the coma trying to grasp me with its cold hands again, but I held it off. For now. The reason for this was because of a message that popped up. [Nameless] Has reached growth necessary to evolve into [Adolescent] Do you wish to proceed? Y / N I was somewhat... Okay, no, I was very, very disappointed I couldn''t evolve into something already, but I suppose it couldn''t have been more than a day or two since I''d come to this world. I shouldn''t be too greedy. I mentally left the window hovering and instead focused back on my status. I paused there, trying to think of what to invest in. I definitely wanted to invest more in both strength and constitution, but I also was quite curious as to what investing in intelligence would do. Hence, I sucked it up and ignored the part of me crying for me to put everything into stats that would yield immediate results, and instead chose, or at least tried to choose, to think about the long game.
[Nameless] [Newborn Snakeling] Age - 0 years Level - 4 Constitution - 5 Strength - 6 Dexterity - 3 Intelligence - 3 (?) Wisdom - 1 [Special] Poison - 4 Skills - (Bite Lv. 6), (Swim Lv. 2), (Constriction Lv. 1), (Headbutt lv. 5), (Inhale Lv. 2)
Dumping two points into intelligence would hopefully help me react a bit quicker to any threats if they came by. I didn''t plan on purposely putting myself in danger, but I knew enough about marine life to know that even if something ignores danger, it would be the one seeking you out. I allowed myself to fall into the grasp of a coma, but not before securing myself in a nice, hidden spot. The pleasant feeling of having invested points lulled my sleep, making it much easier. Just before falling into oblivion, I clicked the Y button for evolution. The moment I did, everything blacked out. It wasn''t like before, where I was gradually dragged down into sleep, but rather, it was a complete and instant shut-down. Not very pleasant, I say. I was lucky I had a hidden cave all to myself, as I cannot even imagine the danger other beasts go through during evolution, or even forced growth. Ugh, what an unfair world. Chapter 5 Waking up was, unsurprisingly, yet again extremely uncomfortable. This time, however, I could actually feel the difference in me. I was now, if I judged correctly, at least 80 centimeters long, and also quite a bit wider than before. Furthermore, even my mind felt different. It was easier to think, to keep track of my own thoughts, and I could tell that I ''saw things faster''. Which basically means I could register things quicker. Congratulations! [Unnamed] is now a Snakeling Adolescent! Good job on your first evolution. I glared at the message, annoyed at the condescending feeling coming from it. Nonetheless, I eventually opted to ignore it in favor of checking out my new and improved body. My scales were now a deep green hue, and they looked and felt harder and bigger. Evidently, either my evolution helped out with it, or my constitution did the trick. Or both. Who knows. Anyways, the cave was now well and truly empty. No more easy food and exp, it seemed. It was a shame, but an inevitable one. Hence, with a heavy heart, after having stretched myself and prepared myself mentally, I swam out of the cave and into the wider seas. I was quick to speedily swim over the floor level, hiding amongst some taller algae while I considered my options. Perhaps I was being a bit dramatic. After all, although there might have been plenty of food, the exp amount those eggs gave me was pathetic, considering it took so many for so few level-ups, although I suppose it would be fair, considering the ease of which I could kill them. Nonetheless, I, surprisingly, did not want to die again. The entire world could burn for all I care, but I refuse to die yet again. Hence, I need strength. I wasn''t quite naive enough to believe that cozying up to humans if they even existed, would save me. No, I wanted strength of my own. Powers which I never had, something with which to change my destiny. And this world gave me the tools I needed to do so. In a way, it was comforting. Although I couldn''t feel emotions anymore, I could still logically tell that there was hope and that somehow eased the weight that''s been on my shoulders since the day I was reborn. Nonetheless, enough philosophical crap. I could make questions later, with a full stomach and a nice, sweet level-up. I settled for waiting inside of the algae, waiting for something stupid enough to come within range. I had somewhat of a plan, and although I never had any experience fighting anything, I believed in my skills and ingenuity.Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author''s consent. Report any sightings. Hence, when a fish about 1/4 the size, a sardine-like creature with a horn on its head, came within range, I struck. I erupted from my hiding place and successfully latched onto the fish, quickly using the venom I''d never before used yet somehow instinctively knew how to use. It was... weird. Still, I had little time to be weirded out as the fish struggled and tried to impale me with its horn, almost succeeding, in fact. Still, I was nimble enough to dodge around it''s progressively clumsier attempts and wrap myself around the fish. Although I couldn''t asphyxiate it, I could still crush its bones using my advantage in bulk and muscle, as well as positioning. During the entire operation, I didn''t let go at all with my mouth. After a minute, the fish finally died, which I could only tell based off of the message received. I must have looked quite funny, almost like a snake-knot, with my head sticking into my own coils, which were coincidentally murdering a cute little fishy. I was nonetheless quick to drag my prize back into the algae and hide. Nobody seemed interested in coming to disturb me, so, as I got to work swallowing the damn fish whole, I also mentally went over the various notifications. Horn Klinglet killed. Bonus Exp granted. Skill (Bite Lv. 6) now Lv. 7 Skill (Constriction Lv. 1 ) now Lv. 2 Skill (Venom Injection Lv. 1) Gained To say I was impressed would have been a vast, vast understatement. For so many skill level-ups to come about was impressive, and I had a suspicion that it was because, this time, I''d actually fought something for real. Furthermore, the ''bonus'' on the kill feed sounded quite tasty. I took my sweet time savoring the meal I''d procured myself, which, by the way, tasted quite good. My taste buds were a bit off from those I remember from my human life, but it was pleasant enough nonetheless. Once I was finished having ingested the damned thing whole because I really had no idea how I was supposed to cut the thing into pieces, I went back to carefully watching all around my little hunting spot, waiting for any foolish enough fish to pass by me. However, twenty or so minutes into my wait, I suddenly felt a chill run down my spine and judging by the sudden panic and complete desertion of the waters all around me as every single fish fled for their lives into various hiding places, I wasn''t the only one. I hid as deeply into the algae as I could, my mind trembling from the strange aura pressing down on me. I could barely make out an absolutely titanic figure making its way through the reef, and when it came just a little closer to me, I felt as though my soul would leave my body. Nonetheless, it didn''t come close enough for such a thing to happen. Instead, it kept going on its path, eventually disappearing off into the distance. Only after I''d made sure that the damned beast wouldn''t be coming back did I poke my head out. Corpses of fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, and even several other sea snakes laid on the bottom of the ocean, their bodies perfectly intact, and yet, it was obvious they were dead. I took back everything I ever said about not wanting to live. In this very moment, I think I sincerely thanked God for the first time in both lives. You have survived the aura of a Supreme Beast. For this achievement, one extra status point has been awarded. I was almost thankful to the system for the bonus, but remembering just how close I came to death... It felt bitter. Not that such a measly thing as almost dying would stop me from quickly snatching up one of the bigger corpses close to me and dragging it over to my spot. Hey, free food is still food, ya? Chapter 6 In gamer terms, I became what is known as a ''camper''. Abusing my color scheme, I hid inside algae, and whenever a fish stupid enough to approach it came close enough... I struck. Ambushing unsuspecting targets was risky, as everything in this damn ocean was, but it was far, far less risky than trying to capture prey out in the open. Furthermore, it allowed me to punch well above my weight. This was demonstrated particularly well when I successfully caught and killed a 60-centimeter fish with extremely sharp-looking teeth. The bastard actually bit me so hard he almost ripped a chunk of my side off, and I had to wait for the rest of the day in the grass, waiting for the wound to slowly heal. I was very, very thankful for the fact that everyone''s healing factor was, frankly put, nonsensical. Anyways, after 4 days of constant ambushes, with an average of 5-6 kills per day, I ended up receiving a tidy sum of points, which I''d chosen not to invest yet.
[Nameless] [Adolescent Snakeling] Age - 0 years Level - 7 Constitution - 5 Strength - 6 Dexterity - 3 Intelligence - 3 (?) Wisdom - 1 [Special] Poison - 4 Remaining points - 10 Skills - (Bite Lv. 12), (Swim Lv. 4), (Constriction Lv. 9), (Headbutt lv. 5), (Inhale Lv. 4), (Venom Injection Lv. 5)
I was honestly pretty proud of myself for having made it this far. I''d finally gotten used to moving around in my serpent form, although I rarely ever really went away from my little nest amongst the algae. I also apparently didn''t really need to sleep all that much, only about one or two hours per day. I hadn''t yet fallen into any other comas, thankfully. However, something in me told me that soon enough, if I managed to continue eating as well as I had and gaining exp, I would be forced into one. This both excited and scared me, to be honest. I''d grown to more or less be one meter long at this point, and as far as I knew, every time of the comas happened I would shoot up in size. Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit. In this ocean, size really was king. You could be a level 100 goldfish and probably still die to a much larger but lower leveled shark. Well, maybe, I wasn''t completely sure as I couldn''t tell levels, but it was quite evident that being big usually meant being strong. Like the titanic murray that inhabited a crack in a large boulder some hundred meters from my area. Damn thing must be at least 6 or 7 meters long, and most things around here try to give it wide berth, including me. I must say, though, being a snake in the ocean might sound bad, but after around a week of living here, I have to admit that I''m starting to like it. Other than the threat of survival, there is nothing hanging over you. No social expectations, no impossible deadlines to achieve, no all-nighters to finish work you won''t get paid for... There is absolutely zero rush here, and it shows. Most things barely move except when hunting. Otherwise, the monsters here usually do their own thing. Sunbathing, sleeping, or just... sitting there. It''s weird. Really weird. However, I can''t say I dislike it. Sure, I would enjoy some more action of the non-murder kind, but I take what I can get. Which, right now, includes a pretty large meal coming over to my area. Most of the ''residents'' of my little area have, by now, learned to steer clear of my spot, but this one must be a newcomer. As the silvery fish that vaguely reminds me of a barracuda passes next to my algae, I wait until the very last moment, and then I strike. Using a combination of my bite and venom injection skill, I can figure out the best spot to bite that would prevent the fish from striking me back while I can pump as much of the sweet, deadly stuff into the bastard''s body. I fought ferociously to drag the large fish over into the algae, and it was a hard fight indeed. The fish tried it''s damn best to either bite me or escape my grasp and coils, but I''d already learned ways to prevent such a thing. I coiled half of myself around it and used the other half to swim as hard as I could over to the algae. As its bones gave out and its nervous system began to fail it with all the venom pumping into its body, it began convulsing, and that was the moment I won. It''s resistance quickly fell apart, and I dragged it into my little area just as quickly. Now hidden, for the most part, I got to work swallowing the delicious-looking meal. I might be called a coward, but after seeing my new level-up notification... I couldn''t bring myself to care. Coincidentally, along with my level-up, I felt a switch go off in the depths of my mind, telling me that I would soon fall into a growth coma. I hurriedly pulled up my status and then went into the deepest and most hidden part of the algae patch I inhabited. I dumped my points somewhat evenly, deciding that it was better to be average at a lot of things than good at a few. Following that, I allowed sleep to claim me.

Chapter 7 I''m a bigger and stronger snek now. I must admit, it feels really good to finally have at least a modicum of confidence in myself. When I woke up, it was after what felt like a relatively long and pleasant sleep. Compared to my previous size, I had more than doubled. I''d shot up to around 2 and 1/2 meters in length, making me one of the ''top dogs'' of this little area. Granted, even if I thought that, I still knew that I was little more than air to beings like that giant... something. Still, I now at least felt a bit better. Thankfully, nobody had interrupted my sleep. Still, I was ravenous now, and I really needed to get something in the damn sinkhole that is my stomach. However, my previous ambush strategy would likely not work now. I was too long and big, and most things would see me hiding if they focused enough. So, I womaned up and got my snakey ass out of my little home (you will be missed) and went out to explore the wider world. It was beautiful, I admit, but I had very little time to admire the beauty of this world''s underwater ecosystems, as I was far too busy trying to sense prey. I was a complete noob at it, though. I knew intellectually that snakes had good olfactory and heat vision, but I didn''t really know how to use them. Furthermore, I didn''t even know if this world''s snakes were the same as my last one. Nonetheless, I eventually found something that looked worth hunting. It was a large, almost 2 meters long beast of a fish that seriously looked like a bull had sex with a fish and shit out this abomination. I might have been overestimating myself... But it looked so god damn tasty and I was so god damn hungry. Still, I needed to be cautious. I stalked the fish for a good thirty minutes, trying to figure out anything that could be of use. Well... It didn''t exactly work. All the fish did was swim around, mouth agape as it stared at nothing like a mentally retarded child. I would have felt pity for its intelligence had I been able to feel emotions. Nonetheless, I was confident enough in my newfound power to at least try and take a chance with the big guy. Even if I failed I could always just run... Er, swim away. And so I did. I crept up behind it as it looked off to nowhere-land, and then I bit as hard as I could on it''s back, latching myself to it as the rest of my body rushed to coil itself around the thing.Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on Royal Road. I was much smaller than the animal, and it showed. I could barely wrap around it a couple of times, but that was enough. The bull-fish realized what was happening and began trashing, trying to shake me off. I felt spines growing out of it''s back, trying to sting and penetrate me, but my scales were thankfully though enough to withstand the relatively weak things. I didn''t immediately realize it but had I not invested so many points in my constitution, I would have died right then and there. Apparently, the spines of this damn fish were poisonous enough to kill a blue whale back in my old world with only a couple stings. Nonetheless, that is future me talking. Present me was busy grappling and crushing the surprisingly slow and weak fish under my coils. Eventually, I felt it''s spine snap and the fish went still. It wasn''t dead though, not yet. Which was impressive, considering the liberal amount of venom I was pumping into it and it''s spine having been broken. It took me another two minutes of crushing and venom pumping to finally end it. I''d basically run out of juicy poison too, trying to kill this damn thing. Still, I was plenty satisfied. I eyed my surroundings, spotting a couple of smaller fish hanging around, eyeing me and my well-earned meal. I hissed at them, although I doubt the sound even reached them. Nonetheless, they got the message and quickly skedaddled. Feeling triumphant and quite proud of myself, I dragged my prize over to a more secluded area and got to work eating it. It... was not pleasant. The small spines of the fish kept stabbing my throat, and I had to dislocate my mouth to an impossible degree to swallow the damn thing. I was quite lucky that the poison of the fish only worked while it was alive. Otherwise, I would have died. I only realized this after a certain message popped up. Through sheer luck, you have survived the sting of the Blob-Arg-Gorg. Lady luck smiles down on you, bestowing you with 3 status points. To say I didn''t almost regurgitate the fish upon reading that would have been a lie. Thoroughly spooked, I wisely decided that, from now on, I would need to be a lot more careful with what I ate. Skill (Poison Resistance Lv. 1) Gained Well, I didn''t come out of it empty-handed, at least. As I sorted through various minor skill level-ups, I did note that I also got bonus exp. It was a shame I couldn''t exactly see how much exp I got or even needed, but I guessed it must have been something at least. I threw my newly ill-gained points into constitution, feeling as though that might just save me again in the future. Finally, having sorted through everything and with a fish inside me (which I could easily see the outline of within my body), I felt as though now might be a good time for some good old serpentine sunbathing, and I could see just the right spot for it. There were a number of large rocks that were big enough to almost reach the surface of the water. I eagerly swam over to one of them, a really nice rock with a little flat area on one side. It''s previous inhabitants quickly fled at my majestic sight, and I claimed the rock for the Kingdom of Cute And Cuddly MurderSnakes. Lying onto the rock, I could faintly feel the heat of the sun washing over my skin. In my human life, sunbathing had always been one of my favorite pastimes, both for the tan and also for the simple pleasure of it. In this life, well, it felt even better. If I could purr, I''m sure I would have been doing so by now. Chapter 8 I must say, it feels quite good to be the one with power instead of just being a follower. Making any and all pretenders to my throne scramble by just baring my fangs at them make me feel... powerful? I don''t know exactly how I feel, if I even have feelings anymore, but I love it. Which only gives me even more reason to hurry up and go murder some poor innocent fishies. I''d feel bad, but I neither can do so nor would I do so even if I could. Still, as I laid there under the setting sun, basking in the last moments of its warm embrace, I really, really wished I didn''t need to. Still, I knew that if I wanted to keep on being able to live, I needed to do so. Hence, I reluctantly abandoned my little throne and swam away for deeper and more lively waters. On my way there, I casually snatched up a relatively small (for this world) crab, just to see how it tasted like. Spoiler alert: It wasn''t that good. Upon reaching deeper water, quite far from all my previous hunting spots, I slithered around the ocean floor, trying to sniff out any worthwhile prey. I eventually found such prey in the form of a very large flounder. Killing it was a bit though since it was almost impossible to wrap myself around it, but I eventually managed to subdue it after a long struggle. Sand Snatcher Killed. Bonus exp Granted. [Nameless] Has reached Lv. 9. 3 Status Points grants. I was surprised when I saw the level-up notification, but it was far from unwelcome. The large fish I''d been hunting recently must have been worth quite a bit of exp. I didn''t bother investing the points, instead keeping them for the next time I fell into a growth coma. After quickly swallowing the flounder, I decided to keep up my hunting. Although my meals usually only take a couple of hours to dissolve, I felt that wasting such time would be, well, a waste of time. Hence, despite the flounder slowing me down, I kept up my hunt. I was rewarded for my efforts when I found and swiftly killed yet another flounder. I ate that one too, and only then did I retreat from my hunting grounds to go back to safer waters. After all, I wasn''t the only predator around, and I''d caught a glimpse of what could only be a shark of at least 10 meters during my hunt. I wasn''t eager to test myself against such monsters. My life fell into a sort of pattern after that. Whenever I was full, I would sunbathe or simply stay near my rock, fending off any and all beasts and monsters that tried to steal it away from me. Whenever I was hungry, I''d head over to whatever area caught my fancy and catch myself some meals. My growing speed had also slowed down by quite a bit compared to before. It was still insane, but by the time I hit level 10, I''d only grown to be 3 meters, and I felt that there was still quite a distance before I would fall into another coma. Speaking about level 10, I received a pleasant surprise upon reading the notification. [Nameless] Has reached Lv. 10. 5 Status Points granted, one Veteran Skill awarded. The two extra points were very nice, but what really interested me was the ''veteran'' skill. Thankfully, the system chose to humor my curiosity.Stolen story; please report. Upon reaching level 20 for certain skills, the Veteran Skill may be applied to maxed out common skills to form a new and improved skill. That really got my curiosity. I immediately checked out my status.

My mood immediately plummeted upon seeing the max sign next to my level. I anxiously tried to coax the system into giving me some sort of explanation. Eventually, I managed to do so, and to my great relief, it explained. Until becoming an adult, creatures must remain at or under level 10. Upon reaching adult status, beings may then proceed to further level up. Further evolution levels depend on species. I was extremely thankful for the information, and I resolved to try and become an adult as soon as possible. If I was correct, I only needed to fall into another coma to become an adult. Deciding that it would be in my best interest to become as strong as possible right now to rush to adulthood, I invested the points I originally intended to keep.

Immediately upon doing so, I felt the usual pleasant tingles run through my body, but I wasn''t in the mood to enjoy them. I immediately set off for the most dangerous hunting ground, which was the area where the open ocean met the coral reef I lived in. From what I''d gathered so far, I lived in a reef in the open ocean. There was no land nearby, and the ocean surrounded us on all sides. Nonetheless, I suspected that most of the ocean''s top dogs left reefs like this one alone in order to give a chance to the younger generations to develop more safely. It was only a theory, of course, but I had a strong suspicion I was right. After all, I hadn''t yet seen any more of those ''mighty beings'' pass through, and I was thankful for being born here. Anyways, I was quick to head over to the area I lovingly dubbed the ''Killzone''. I had a good reason for giving it such a name, too, since last time I was near this area, I could see the bigger, stronger, faster and much more brutal fish from the open ocean constantly feast upon their weaker and generally stupider counterparts of the reef. I''d even seen what an adult of my species would look like, although I wasn''t sure if it was my same species or just another sea snake. Nonetheless, it was a fairly large snake, at least twice my length at around 5 or 6 meters and with forest green scales. I''d also seen what the insides of an adult of my species look like when a swordfish on steroids cut it apart like it was tofu using it''s sword-nose. Last I remember, swordfishes were not so fast, and neither were their swords made of what I swear looked like steel. I''d quickly fled from there, but now, I didn''t need exp. I only needed food, and I''d discovered that the higher the level of the monster I ate, the more ''valuable'' the meat was. Meaning, it filled me more and was worth more than weaker monsters. Hence, for the next few days, I spent most of my time hiding like a coward, fleeing any time one of the terrifying monsters from the open oceans passed by. I swear I almost shit myself when a large crab the size of a car began to speedily waddle its way to way me. I don''t think I ever swam faster than I did that moment. Nonetheless, by the fourth day of my desperate struggle to procure as much food as I could by stealing scraps and getting in the occasional kill on weakened targets, I finally reached the coma threshold. When I came back to my throne, I felt as though I''d just come back from hell. However, I''d benefitted a lot from my expedition, as I was now 4 meters in length and much, much stronger than any of the common reef fish. The false claimants to my throne were killed with great prejudice and happily eaten before I allowed the coma to take me once I was in a safe enough spot. I was quite eager to see what adult me would be like. Chapter 9 Greetings, people, monsters and eldritch horrors of the ocean! Your lovely host [I can''t fucking remember my name] is here to eat you all with her new and improved snek form. Jokes aside, waking up with my new, glorious adult form must have been one of the single greatest moments in this new life of mine. Right after surviving that impossibly strong being, of course. Congratulations on your evolution! You are now a Snakeling Adult. New paths have been opened, please visit the evolution menu for more information. I ignored the pop-up (for now) in favor of examining my new glorious form. I must have grown quite a bit because my sufficiently spacious throne now looked just a tad bit small. It didn''t take long for me to determine that I was now around 6 meters long, double from my previous form. Furthermore, although my stats hadn''t changed, I felt a lot stronger and more durable, although that might just be my ego speaking. And man did I feel great. I almost wanted to rush back to the Killzone to try my luck at murdering some high-level open ocean scum. Key word being almost. I was not in a rush to kill myself. Still... I was happy, or at least my logical mind felt I should be happy. It must have been only around a month since I was reborn in this world, and my living prospects looked pretty good now. ... Okay, that''s a lie. I was still very likely to die within the next year, but at least I wouldn''t die to fucking herrings. Seriously, fuck those bastards. Now in a much worse mood than before, I left my little hiding spot to go on a stroll through the safer yet beautiful areas of the reef, snatching up some small snacks on the way. As I was doing such, I busied myself by exploring the evolution menu. It wasn''t anything impressive, to be honest, but I was still plenty happy with what it said. In short, it gave me a list of all races I could evolve into, including the requirements for certain evolutions. There weren''t many options as of right now, only a few, but they did sort of set down a path for further evolutions. I dully read through each one of them during my stroll, but I was only half-heartedly reading them. I really didn''t care all that much right now about evolutions, since I still needed at least around 5 levels before evolving. Instead, I focused on enjoying the little things this life had to offer me. For example, I easily caught one of those horny fish, my first real prey in this world, just for nostalgia''s sake. It tasted mediocre compared to some of the bigger and higher-leveled fish I ate at the Killzone. Still, it tasted like memories, so I ignored the real taste and instead focused on telling myself how better-off I would be if I gathered my courage and went back to that hellhole for some more experience. This narrative has been purloined without the author''s approval. Report any appearances on Amazon. Yes. It was very, very hard to convince myself to throw myself into the meatgrinder yet again. While I was stronger than before, I was also much more of a target, and that didn''t sit well with me. Still, there was little I could do about it. I needed to become stronger if I wanted to survive, and god damn it, I want to live. I don''t want to merely survive, just barely scraping by each day, trying to survive till the next dawn. No, I wanted to live as I pleased. It might be arrogant of me to say that, but I felt as though I at least had a shot at achieving such a goal. Still, I needed to walk small steps and not get lost in the bigger picture. And the first step to achieving this was by using my veteran point. I spent several hours mulling over where to spend it, but eventually, the solution was quite clear. While venom was a powerful tool, it wasn''t my main damage-dealer. To me, it was more of a way to soften my target. Biting was a reliable attack, but it wasn''t powerful, and it carried a certain risk to it by exposing my head to an enemy. Furthermore, it''s damage wasn''t particularly high anyways. No, my main power came from crushing my prey underneath my coils. Hence, constriction was the obvious answer. Thankfully, it''d leveled up to 20 during my mad dash for adulthood, hence, it was possible for me to evolve the skill as of right now. I mentally clicked on the skill and dumped the veteran point on it, and immediately, several options popped up. (Sword-Serpent) - Gives a razor-sharp edge to user''s coils, allowing for the user to cut their enemies and prey to pieces. Possible to turn on and off. (Extreme Constriction) - Multiplies strength of normal constriction by a factor 5, and makes it much harder for captured targets to escape (Magical Tomb) - Allows user to imbue magical properties to their coils. Power depending on mana used and magical ability. Immediately, I crossed off Magical Tomb. It sounded good on paper, but... I had no idea how to do magic! How the hell am I supposed to use such an attack? Thus, only the other two options remained. Sword-serpent sounded good, but I had little need for sharpness when I much preferred turning my enemies into paste, hence, I ''happily'' clicked on extreme constriction. A rush of information rushed into my mind the moment I did so, and my very body seemed to have ants crawling all around it for a split second. When it was over, I was half-stunned by the weirdness of what just happened, but I still dully went through the information I just received. It was akin to receiving years upon years of serpentine knowledge of how to best use your coils to strange and murder enemies. Furthermore, my whole body felt as though it could easily wrap around anything and crush it with ease. I don''t know, it''s weird. Don''t judge me, inner conscience! Pretty happy with what I just received, I sniffed out a larger-than-average silver barracuda-monster for testing. It was all too easy sneaking up behind it and using my newly gained knowledge, I had my whole body wrapped around it in less than a second. Then, I squeezed. The damned thing literally exploded. I''m serious, it literally blew up in a shower of blood and gore. I was very quick to flee from the scene and rub off any and all bloody smell off of my body on some algae. I had absolutely no intention of attracting piranhas, or worse, sharks to me. Well, lesson learned. Be careful of how much pressure I use on weak little snacks like that. At least I didn''t attempt this in the Killzone, or I''m sure I would have been in a lot more trouble. Happy enough with my testing for the day and deciding that I deserved a break, I headed back to my throne and promptly sat my serpentine ass down on the brightest spot of the rock, and promptly dozed off. Chapter 10 I gave myself a couple of days to slack off before I would force myself to head back into the hellhole that was the Killzone. After all, even though I''d never been much of a workaholic, I was very much in love with not dying... wait, that doesn''t sound right. Anyways, I spent these days exploring the relatively vast reef and making snacks out of it''s tasty-looking inhabitants. I also spent most afternoons on various newly claimed thrones, enjoying the wonders of sunbathing. During these explorations, I came across so many species and sub-species of all kinds of creatures that I honestly lost count after a while. Still, while the exp they granted was minimal at best, they were still quite tasty, so I found that hunting them wasn''t that big of a waste. I also learned how to better control my new and improved constriction, mostly through what I personally would call ''scientific experimentation'', but most sane people would, more correctly, call torture. Still, as my self-imposed deadline neared, I found myself more and more uncomfortable in the reef. The food here was abundant, yes, but the exp it granted was minimal, and its nutritional value wasn''t worth even a hundredth of what I could get in the Killzone. Furthermore, the reef was also starting to feel quite small. I somewhat suspected that this was the reason why fish that become too strong or big for the reef end up always leaving it. It''s almost instinctual, and I know full well how hard instincts are to disobey, even for someone with my level of intelligence and willpower. Still, there was little reason to disobey these instincts. I did eventually plan on going out of my birthplace and traveling into the much wider oceans, where I could hopefully strengthen myself enough to carve out my own place in this world. However, before I threw myself into the meatgrinder, there was one particular opponent I had a vested interest in seeing it become my food. That damned moray that I''d briefly lived next to during my time as an ambusher. That huge thing needed to die. Well, at least I decided that it did, and my decision is absolute. Unless they''re not. Then I usually run away. Anyways, it was quite easy to find the fake snake since it hadn''t moved from the last spot I''d seen it at. However, figuring out a strategy to kill it proved quite a challenge. See, the eel had its whole body within a crack in the stone, with only it''s head barely peeking out. This made my usual strategy of attacking from any direction but the front quite impossible to pull off.Stolen novel; please report. Now, normally, if it had been any opponent but this one, I would have given up. However, something, perhaps my deeply-buried instincts, or perhaps the aura it gave off, but regardless, this damn moray felt like the king of the reef. I couldn''t have that. I was the real queen of this shithole, and since that moray didn''t seem that much bigger than me, then it had to die. And I came up with an incredibly clever and subtle way of defeating it. With great intellect and cunning, I used my wits to outsmart the thing and... Just kidding. I threw myself at it right from the front, charging like a drunk truck driver. What followed was a brutal and merciless slugfest of both of us, snake and fake-snake, furiously biting each other. However, while the eel had a distinct advantage in the venom department, judging by the burning feeling that scorched through my body which only increased with each bite, I had a separate advantage. The eel could bite... But I could constrict, and boy did I constrict hard. It took a while, but after I successfully wrapped around it a couple of times, I squeezed as hard as I could. Unlike the first victim of my new skill, the moray didn''t explode. Nonetheless, its bones still gave out. It was a pure battle of attrition after that, and to be honest, I only survived because of my frankly overleveled constitution and poison resistance. It was a much shorter battle than the ones I''m used to, but it was a whole other level of brutal. By the end of it, although I came out victorious, I had been hurt. Very hurt. Whole chunks of my body had been ripped off, making me lose blood on a massive scale. Furthermore, the venom the moray had pumped into me was constantly destroying me from the inside out. When the thing finally died, I wasn''t too far from death myself. Despite that, my mind was still very clear, and I felt no regret for what I''d done at all. In hindsight, there must have been some sort of higher influence controlling some part of me, because I doubt I would have risked myself in such a way otherwise. Nonetheless, the rewards were very much worth the risk. King of the Litrean Reef Albadrad Killed. Bonus exp Granted. For killing the King of a reef as a reefborn, you have gained a special exp bonus! I (shakily) asked the system what exactly being the queen of this damned reef meant. As the Queen of the Litrean Reef, you would gain overlordship over the area, as well as a 50% boost to all stats while in the area. You would also be given several options for further expanding the reef. The offer was tempting, I admit. As I laid there, so close to death, I was so very, very tempted to take the option. However, I did not want to settle down like this. Not yet. Not in such a small and limited place like this, not when there was such a huge and mysterious world out there to explore. I chose the status points. Chapter 11 I fought ferociously to keep my consciousness. I knew that falling asleep would mean the end of me, and after all of this, I refused to die. Not after such a victory. Not when I was so close. Having gotten the bonus points, I ignored the crippling pain of having chunks of my body missing and instead focused on pulling up my status screen.

Almost immediately upon going well over double my previous constitution, I felt the usual tingles of my stats being upgraded running through my body, providing a relief to mind-numbing pain that I otherwise felt. When the tingles ended, I could feel a vast difference in my previous power compared to my current one. My constitution was directly linked to my regeneration, and with it having doubled, so did my regeneration. Hence, I was now recovering faster than I was dying. Having escaped from the claws of death, I still refused to give in to my body''s demand to sleep. Instead, I forced every last ounce of energy in my body on swallowing the moray, which took well over 15 minutes to do, and although I could barely tell the taste through the fog had by now clouded my mind, I could still tell it was the single most delicious thing I ever ate.Stolen content warning: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. When I finally finished swallowing the Murray, I couldn''t hold on anymore. I fell to the jaws of sleep. This sleep was strange. I had strange, nonsensical dreams through it all, but I couldn''t decipher them, and after each one, I would forget the previous one. The only indicator I even dreamed at all was the nagging feeling in my mind telling me that something happened. Nonetheless, when I eventually woke up, I felt as though I had been transformed yet again. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I''d yet again shot up in size, now being around 8 meters long and much wider than before. Furthermore, having basically doubled my total amount of status points, I was a lot, and by a lot, I mean a lot stronger, tougher, and faster than before. So, as I slithered out of the area where I and the previous king had battled... It felt almost surreal. Every marine lifeform that belonged to the reef fled at the mere feel of me coming, and those that didn''t give me an extremely wide berth. To be honest, I was still half-convinced I''d died and I was now just a delusional soul, but my monster mind forbid me from going forward with those thoughts, instead of dragging me into the reality of the situation. I''d given up the chance to settle down and live a relatively safe life. Instead, I''d chosen to further strengthen myself for the trials ahead. I didn''t know if I made the right choice. And yet... I didn''t care. I did what I had to in order to survive, and I would now stick with it. I looked at the reef that could have truly become my kingdom. I had little attachment to the place, and now that I''d reached a level of strength not too far away from those monsters of the open ocean... I felt even less attached. In fact, while my instincts were silent, they were quite clear on the fact that I needed to leave. It didn''t demand me to do so immediately, but I knew that I would not be able to disobey these instincts. Not that I wanted to. I''d fought, schemed, and murdered my way up to my current strength, but I hadn''t even been on this world for a year. I couldn''t even imagine what I might achieve in a year, or ten, or a hundred, or a thousand. After all, if this world is like those fictions in my homeworld, it wouldn''t be impossible for me to become ageless. To live forever, unbound by the shackles of time. It was a distant dream, but as I returned to my first little throne, one that now looked so pathetically small and insignificant, I wondered about it. Not even a week ago, I felt as though claiming this throne had been the greatest thing I''d ever done. And yet, I''d now trumped that achievement by far, and I knew that I would claim even greater triumphs if my luck held up. It was a strange thought. I slithered away from that throne, instead choosing to wander the reefs aimlessly for a little bit. When I was born, I felt as though everything could and would kill me. Now, I was confident in my strength. I''d lived through a true life or death battle, and I''d won, and gained immeasurable gains from it. And yet, this was but the beginning. I flicked my tongue out, trying to lick my lips in anticipation. I headed away from the reef, heading out to the Killzone. The time for soulsearching was over. I still had more fishies to slaughter. Chapter 12 The Killzone was just as brutal as I remembered it. Large fish with all kinds of weird and deadly mutations swam around at speeds that should have honestly been impossible, constantly fighting against other open-ocean fish or hunting down much weaker reefborns. It was a stark contrast to the relatively peaceful areas of the reef. Sure, there was danger there, obviously, but if one was smart about it, it was all too easy avoiding predators. Here, though, it was simply impossible to not encounter danger. The area had some rocks and corals here and there, but as the ground level continued to lower, they became rarer and rarer. I hadn''t fully explored the area yet, but now that I had the strength to, I fully intended on, if not conquering, at least learning how to survive in such an area. I swam my way around the initial contact area between reef and ocean, remaining only a couple of meters above the floor level, daring any challenger to approach my glorious 8-meter long frame. Although my memories of the other world are already pretty fuzzy, I do remember the longest snake in that world was only some 7.5 meters, so I''m technically already well over my old world''s limit. And, just as expected, it wasn''t too long before a challenger showed up. A frankly gigantic tuna-like monster with eight eyes and some crazy sharp teeth. I''d actually seen this fish back during my mad dash to adulthood. I''d had to flee from this damn thing twice, but thankfully it never pursued me too far. But... Things were different now, far different. I bared my teeth at the tuna, showing off my poisonous fangs. Although my poison was by far not my strongest weapon, it was still much stronger than most beings around here. The tuna itself seemed to hesitate at my aggressive stance, but it still went ahead with its attack. All of its attention was focused on me and I felt as though there was something attempting to control my mind. But it was weak. Pathetically weak. It was all too easy to crush this strange force with my willpower, even if I never experienced something like this. The tuna recoiled, 4 of its eyes violently shutting close, blood streaking out of them. Mental attacks, huh. Good thing I''ve got the mind of a human along with far, far more years of experience than this thing. I didn''t waste any more time and instead shot forward, taking advantage of the momentary shock the tuna seemed to have gone into. I bit with enough force to easily crush its bones, latching onto its side as the rest of my body followed suit, wrapping around the still stunned tuna.If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. When it came back to itself, it struggled violently, attempting to bite or dislodge me. It even smashed itself into the nearby rocks, although, doing such a thing was obviously hurting it far more than it hurt me. It took surprisingly little for the thing to die. Evidently, the backslash from failing whatever it tried to do to my mind was far worse than I originally thought. Hmph. I am the queen of myself, attempting to try to steal my mind from me will only get this dumbass a one-way trip to my hungry stomach. I pushed away a couple of notifications, no level up, unfortunately. Meanwhile, I was also busy eating up the tuna. It was big, yes, but far from too big for me to swallow up. It was also really tasty, and it''s eyes were also suprisingly good. Like, 5-star restaurant good. I eyed the few ferocious-looking fish that were looking at me while I ate my meal. I puffed myself up, making me seem as big as possible while showing off my fangs. There was an uncanny level of intelligence in their eyes as they considered their choice. Eventually, they slowly backed off, leaving me to my own devices. I heaved a sigh of relief. It''s a good thing that it''s seriously rare for fish, both here and on the reef, to form any real groups. If they did, I would almost surely be overwhelmed. Well, their loss is my win. I proudly finished swallowing up the tuna and then waited around an hour for it to be digested. When I felt ready enough, I continued to make my way through the Killzone. I came across multiple battles between all sorts of creatures, and it was honestly awe-inspiring to see such diversity. I even saw a car-sized crab wrestling with a 20-armed octopus that had spikes instead of suckers. As a marine biologist in my previous life, I couldn''t help but want to take them apart and see just how they functioned as living beings, but most of the interesting ones were still above my league. Hence, I left them alone. I even had an encounter with something akin to my past self. A merely 2 meters long goldfish attempting to steal away a piece of another creature''s kill while it was distracted. However, unlike myself, the goldfish wasn''t very smart about it. Instead of robbing a large piece and then fleeing for its life, it continued to steal little pieces, always coming back. It wasn''t long before the rightful owner of the kill noticed it, and made quick work of it. Ah, how glad I am that I outgrew those days. The stress of constantly risking your life for such small morsels is really something I don''t regret leaving behind. Nonetheless, I kept up my exploration of the Killzone. I even caught a glimpse of the real open-ocean, which was an impossibly vast expanse of nothing but water, darkness, and death. I was quick to back off, preferring to remain in the middle-area between reef and ocean for now. As I was exploring, though, I was suddenly attacked. A Bobbit-worm-like creature exploded out of the ground, attempting to catch me with its jaws. It came really, really close to doing so, but my relatively slender body allowed me to just barely dodge its lightning-quick grab. The vicious bite I gave it for its attempt made me feel a lot better as it quickly fled back into the ground. I wasn''t feeling particularly confident in battling it in its home area, so I begrudgingly left. Still, I wisely decided that, perhaps, it might be a good idea to invest more in dexterity and intelligence, just so that I can react faster to surprises like this. Chapter 13 The world is truly weird sometimes, I thought as I watched a literal living turd engulfing and eating an 8-meter long shark. It was incredibly disturbing, and I was quite quick to leave that area and swear myself to never approach giant shit-looking creatures. It''d been around two days since I ventured into this place. By now, I knew I needed to leave the area, since I needed to get some sleep in, and I really didn''t fancy sleeping anywhere near here. Still, it wasn''t all bad. I''d leveled up once, and eaten quite a lot of decent food. It was quite likely I would grow a bit during my sleep. Hence, I ''happily'' left the Killzone and made my way back to the reef. I busied my mind by comparing myself to a returning ww2 veteran, returning to her country scarred and far more brutal, but also much stronger and more experienced. ... Okay, the comparison sucked. Still, any fish or not-fish that dare say so wil get eaten, Still, as the entire populations of the areas I passed vanished into their hiding places, I felt powerful. I knew I was far, far, impossibly far from being even a fraction of the strength of that mighty being, but it''s the small steps that count. However, as I passed by a familiar area, the old reef king''s cave, I felt a familiar aura coming from it. I say aura, but in reality, it was more of a feeling. It''s hard to describe in human terms, but perhaps, saying that I felt a presence would be more accurate. Anyways, feeling a tad bit curious, I poked my head into the large cave to see what was up. Imagine my suprise when I saw a new morray in there. It was much, much smaller and looked a lot weaker than the previous one, but it was easy to tell that it was the new King of the Reef. The cursed fake-snake snarled at me, huddled at back of the cave. After eyeing it for a while, I debated what to do with it. Killing it would probably give me very little in return. In fact, I was almost sure the bonus for killing the Reef King only applied once. Still... I bit it''s head, easily separating it from the rest of it''s body. Then, I ate all of it.Did you know this story is from Royal Road? Read the official version for free and support the author. As expected, the only message I got was about getting some experience points. Nonetheless, I was happy with it. It was incredibly satisfying murdering an opponent that had brought me so very close to death so easily. If nothing else, I at least felt better with myself. I truly was a terrible person... Err, snake. Bullying the weak like this should probably not be so satisfying, and yet, knowing that they would have done the exact same thing had our positions been reversed evaporated any guilt that I could have felt. Not that I could feel it. I had no real emotions, after all. Moving on from this little stop, I eventually reached my destination. It was a large, majestic rock with a nice, large flat area very close to the water surface. It was all too easy slaughtering it''s previous owner, a slimy slug-like fish. I wasn''t picky enough not to eat it despite it''s gross appearance. I happily settled into my new throne and proceeded to sunbathe for the remaining daylight hours. I allowed my brain to shut down, feeling that I was safe enough to get in some sleep. By the time I woke up, it was already the middle of the night. Considering I''d fallen asleep around when the sun fell, I''d slept for quite a bit. As I suspected, my body had grown a bit, now coming close to 9 meters. I was, frankly put, a really big danger noodle. I dumped my 5 points from my level up into intelligence, memories of that damn bobbit worm popping up. If something like that came up again, I wanted to be able to react in an appropriate timeframe. Perhaps it was disonorable of me to do so, but I was no samurai. I was a survivor, a monster. I still wasn''t sure what I''d do if I met a human, but if I needed to do so in order to save my life, I would, without doubt, mercilessly slaughter as many humans as I need to. That thought was quite strange for me. I was never a violent person in my previous life, and yet, here I was now, so ready to react with violence. I suppose this new life of mine has truly changed me. I don''t think it''s a bad thing, though. I looked at my level with critical eyes. I would begin to unlock evolution options upon reaching level 15, and that would be a big decision to make. Still, I''d rather actually reach that point before making decisions. With such thoughts in my head, I stopped wandering aimlessly and returned to the Killzone. It may be a hellhole, but in there, I could get stronger much faster. Chapter 14 Sometimes, danger truly brings great reward. However, in my modest opinion, I much prefere great rewards with no danger. And that is why I am currently watching as two titans duke it out between themselves. A giant turtle with two heads was engaged in a fight to death against an opponent that seemed to match it in almost every way: an equally large lobster with 4 claws so big they looked almost comical, if one disregarded just how deadly those things must be. And then, there was me. I was somewhat longer than them, but they were still far, far bigger than me overall. Not that such a thing would ever dissuade me, of course. These beasts were far above my current league when in their top condition, but... They''d be easy prey if they weakened each other. And so, as the two titans fought, I focused on clearing the area of all bystanders, forcing most to flee and biting any that lingered too much. By the end of their fight, I''d succesfully cleared the area and was hidden from sight, observing how healthy they were. The lobster had lost one of it''s claws entirely, and two of them looked out of commision. It also had various cracks on it''s exoskeleton, which must have hurt a lot considering how careful it was with moving the cracked areas. Meanwhile, the turtle had suffered even more. It''s shell looked broken, and one of it''s heads had been decapitated by a lucky strike from the lobster. Still, they both held on as they kept on fighting brutally. And I, like the opportunist I was, struck when they were at their weakest. Just as the lobster looked about to triumph over the turtle, I rushed at it at lightning speed from behind and harshly bit into it''s back. The lobster recoiled, but it was far too weak to do anything as my coils wrapped around it and squeezed. It''s exoskeleton had simply been too damaged already to put up much of a fight. With a sick crunch, the exoskeleton around my coils shattered, allowing me to reach into it''s soft and squishy internal organs and flesh. It died pretty quickly, but I still wasn''t done. The moment I received it''s death pop-up, I let go of the lobster and rushed at the turtle, who''d been trying to escape. However, it''s fins had been broken during the brutal fight, and it was in no position to resist me either. It quickly died once I latched myself onto it. In a way, it was a fitting end for such a defensive creature. It might have had the hardest shell I''d ever seen, but what use was it once it was broken? It''s attack and speed were seriously underclassed. When the turtle died as well, I knew I had to be quick. I bit the turtle on it''s side and dragged it away, while coiling my body around one of the lobster''s claws, also dragging it with me. It was awkward swimming like this, and it was also very, very dangerous. Nonetheless, I made it back to the reef without encountering any other strong open-ocean fish. There were of course some other opportunists who tried to steal away my meal, but they were easy to repulse. When I finally reached the reef, I allowed myself to relax and heaved a mental sigh of relief. This was the first time I went up against the stronger open-ocean beings, and it took a lot of courage to not flee when they first began to fight. The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings. After all, the lobster had somehow managed to shatter a rock with just a swing of it''s claw. That was just plain scary. Nonetheless, I''d profited from this big times. Although I still couldn''t feel emotions, my logical mind was jumping in false excitement. I ignored the pop-ups for now and instead focused on swallowing the turtle first. I''m going to be honest here, it was a pretty disgusting sight. Even I didn''t know I could dislodge my jaws so much that I was able to open it so wide. Still, I was thankful for the ability. The lobster followed suit, and although they tasted very good, their shells made it a lot less tasty and also much harder to eat and digest. I''d give it a 7/10. More spice would be good. Jokes aside, the experience I gained from these things was insane. I''d been hunting in the Killzone for around a week now, but I must have gained twice as much xp from just these two than all of my hunts combined, and then some more. [Nameless] Has reached Lv. 16. 5 Status Points granted [Nameless] Has reached Lv. 17. 5 Status Points granted It was glorious. I''d already reached level 15 after a day of hunting in the Killzone, but for me to level up twice just like this... It made me wonder if I should risk it again. ... No. I was just very, very lucky this time around. If I''d been a bit slower or just unluckier, I would have easily been destroyed. I''d rather go for the slow but steady way. I invested my points after some thought as I returned to my throne. [Nameless] Adult Snakeling] Age - 0 years Level - 17 Constitution - 30 Strength - 20 Dexterity - 15 Intelligence - 15 (?) I knew this wasn''t a choice to be made carelessly, as it might very well define my future. Opening the Evolution menu, I observed the various options. Evolution Options - Display all paths or only open ones? I huffed, annoyed at the question. I didn''t care about seeing all the paths, I just wanted to know what was available right now. Open Paths Queen Snakeling - Queen of the Snakeling Race. Allows for limited control over other snakelings. Requirements: Slay a King / Queen title holder. Warning: There can only ever be one queen / king of a race. Reef Snake - Snake of the reefs. Allows for camouflage and increased stealth. Requirements: Be born in a reef. Venom Serpent - Ocean snake that is extremely poisonous. Gives bonuses to venom attacks and intimidation buffs. Requirements: Be a snake, have sufficient venom stat, survive certain-death by poison. I''ll admit, as I looked through the three options I was presented, I was very much disappointed. They all seemed so... lame. Thankfully, the system came to my rescue with some suggestions of it''s own. Possible Open Paths - Suggestions Abyssal Snake - Snake of the deep oceans. Gives bonuses when in the deep ocean areas. Requirements: Visit the deep ocean area and survive. Greater Ocean Serpent - Rare branch of the Snakeling race. Is bigger, stronger, and tougher than your average snakeling. Requirements: Be a level 20 snakeling Colossal Serpent - Gigantic snake whose legends claim that it can one day swallow the world. Bonuses to strength, size, and power. Requirements: Bathe the aura of a Mighty Being, slay a King/queen title holder, reach maximum size for the Snakeling race, be level 20. Alright, it should be obvious just which path I decided on. It took me just about half a second to decide that I would become a colossal serpent, or I would die trying. With renewed determination, I made my way back to the killzone, more than ready for another meal. ... Or not, I decided, feeling extremely bloated with the two giants in my belly. Maybe some sleep would do me good. Chapter 15 Two weeks passed by at a relatively decent pace. While I was very much focused on leveling up and eating as much as I could, I was also trying to enjoy the little things in this new life. Sure, I didn''t have a lot of ''fun'' things to do, but nonetheless, the few that I did have were enough for me. Sunbathing, eating, and exploring were more or less the only forms of entertainment available to me. I will admit that it was a little boring. After digesting the turtle and lobster, I''d shot up to around 11 meters long, and by the end of the second week, I was at 12 meters, which was apparently my maximum. I wasn''t quite strong enough to match the real powers in the Killzone in a one versus one, but I was still strong enough to be able to ignore most dangers of the Killzone. Not that I wasn''t careful every time I ventured into the area. Still, I made slow progress. I didn''t get more chances at snatching up more of such large prizes like the lobster and turtle, which was unfortunate. By the end of the first week, I''d reached level 19. However, no matter how much I hunted, level 20 never seemed to come around, and it was starting to annoy me quite a bit. I wanted to evolve, god damn it. I was confident that once I''d evolve, even the most dangerous areas of the Killzone would be nothing but a joke to me. And so, as each day passed by with painfully little progress, I was starting to get really, really irritated. Well, that''s a lie. I couldn''t really get irritated since my emotions were more or less nonexistent, but I could still tell that I wasn''t making that much progress. Most of my skills were capped out, and no matter how much I tried, I couldn''t get more skills. My size was also maxed out, so I wouldn''t grow no matter how much I ate. Eventually, I decided that I would need to risk it or biscuit. Hence, that is the reason why I am currently making yet another very stupid hunting decision. I was going to hunt down a full-health, four-clawed titan lobster. I''d found this one a while ago, and I''d left it alone then. Now, however, I was desperate enough to risk it. The reason for my choice was that I had a theory. I''d gotten more than enough overall exp the past week, and I should have already gone up to 20. However, I haven''t. Hence, my theory is that certain requirements need to be met for reaching the maximum level, like, say, for example, fighting a far stronger opponent. Still, this was a very bad matchup for me. If the lobster got me between its claws, I could very well be cut in half, and that would be... not very ideal. Furthermore, it''s exoskeleton made it almost impossible for me to get a good grab with my fangs on it. My only reliable weapon would be my constriction, but that would leave me vulnerable to its claws. It was an agonizing decision, but I eventually got my act together. I hovered up near the surface of the water, looking at my stationary prey. The damned lobster was busy enjoying a meal of its own, but even as it ate, three of its claws always looked ready to defend it.The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. Well, here goes nothing... I charged downwards, swimming as fast and silently as I could. Nonetheless, the lobster seemed to sense me coming judging by how it stopped eating when its antennae twitched. Still, it was far too slow to turn and I was able to land a devastating headbutt into it''s back. I''m lucky my headbutt skill seems to protect me from recoil damage, because god damn that exoskeleton is hard. Not hard enough, though. The shell cracked quite violently, but other than that, it was unharmed. However, I didn''t relent my advantage as I constantly hovered above it, always staying behind it enough so that its claws couldn''t reach me. I bit into it once, twice, thrice... It was a deadly dance between us, where one mistake on my part could mean decapitation. I was very lucky that the thing was slow and clumsy, and didn''t seem as though it could swim. Still... it actually went better than I thought. It still took hours to weaken the lobster enough between my venom and bites for it to slow down enough that I was confident enough to wrap myself around it''s back and crush it. I overextended a bit though there, and one of the claws came only a couple centimeters from snapping around my neck. Still, it missed, and I took the opportunity to crush everything I could. It took three hours to kill, which was a bit insane considering I could easily kill most creatures in less than a minute. Still, it actually went a lot better than how I originally thought it would go. Yeah, I was at constant risk of instant-death through decapitation, but hey, the thing was slower than New York''s traffic during rush hour. And finally, the long-awaited pop-up came. [Nameless] Has reached Lv. 20. 10 Status Points granted. 2 Veteran points granted. You have reached the level cap for your race. Evolve before continuing your rise. If I could feel happiness, I''d probably bursting with it by now. Still, now was not the time to celebrate. I swiftly devoured the lobster, which was a lot easier than last time since I was quite a bit bigger, and then fled back into my lovely and safe reef. Once there, I quickly invested my status points into constitution, but had to then pause to consider where exactly I wanted my veteran points to go into. The first obvious choice was the Bite skill, which was more or less a staple of my hunting strategy. Hence, a point was invested there. Crunch - Gives user the ability to deal x5 damage than a regular bite with each attack. Devour - (combine with inhale) Allows for user to suck away the flesh and blood of the bitten. Rate depends on toughness of enemy and level of skill. I was a bit surprised at the devour skill, but still, crunch did sound pretty good. However, I already had extreme constriction for massive damage, and a skill that seemed to almost bypass armor would be good. Hence, I selected devour. It was annoying that I would lose one of my skills, but eh. I didn''t really use it all that much other than quickly picking up snacks. My second veteran point was promptly dumped into my swim skill since I was quite eager to receive some kind of movement skill. Due to being having a serpentine body, most options have been locked. Serpent''s Dance - allows for user to have greater awareness of his/her body and how to best utilize it to efficiently travel in water. Will also help user during battle. Alright, I''ll admit. I was disappointed there was only one option, but I still took it. It did sound good, I guess. And as the information of the new skill rushed into my mind, that feeling only amplified. Before, I''d still moved and fought like I was on land and humanoid, but with this skill, that inhibition would hopefully disappear. Now, it was time for my much-awaited evolution. I settled into a large but safe area on one of my thrones. Then, I went to the evolution menu. Are you sure you wish to evolve into [Colossal Serpent]? You will not be able to revert back. Y / N I clicked yes, and the world shut down. Chapter 16 Evolving into a new species was an... interesting process. I was asleep during the entire thing, but I could still somehow tell that my body was changing drastically. Unlike my previous evolutions, this one took quite a long time. I could only vaguely recognize myself during this time, as if I''d been detached from my own body. During my sleep, I had a plethora of dreams. They were all quite different, some sad and some happy, but they always had something in common, and that was that in each one of them I was a snake, big or small. I had no scientific proof nor did it make much sense, but I was pretty sure that those dreams were the genetic memories regarding the Colossal Serpent race. In them, I somehow learned, or rather, I should say I inherited a couple of completely science-defying abilities. When I finally woke up, I was surrounded by something hard. It took me a couple minutes to fully awaken and realize where and who I was, but when I did, I got a sense of immense deja-vu. Just like the day I was reborn, I violently pushed against whatever was encasing me, and after a brief struggle, my prison shattered completely, and I was out. The difference was all too easy to see. Before, the reef had still looked quite big, but now, it seemed quite a bit smaller. Although my memories were still a bit cloudy, I also clearly remember that the area I''d chosen for my evolution didnot look and feel so small. I examined my body, and as I suspected, I''d changed quite a bit. Gone was my deep green hue, now, it had been replaced by dark blue scales, although there were still some hints of green here and there. Furthermore, although it might not be the most accurate measurement, I must have at least be 30 meters long now, if not more. I spent the next few hours mulling around, recovering from the strange experience that was my evolution. I reviewed all the dreams I went through, as well as played around with my newfound body. I also reviewed my status, which had suprisingly changed quite a bit. Due to having evolved and become a full-fledged monster, your status has been changed due to incorrect translation between status and real power. Status points have been changed into Evolution Progress Level has been transferred into Evolution Progress. Skills levels have been replaced with Mastery. Miscelaneous skills have been removed from status. May still view themif asked. If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it. [Nameless] [Colossal Serpent (1st Stage)] Age - 0 years Evolution Progress - 0% Mastery - [Serpent''s Dance - 0%], [Devour - 0%], [Extreme Constriction - 65%] ... Okay. I was a bit confused at the abrupt change, but I suppose it made sense. While status points made sense when I was small, they became somewhat inaccurate as my body continued to become bigger and stronger while my real status lagged behind. Still, I was quite excited at the new prospects. First things first, I prodded the system to tell me more about this new stage thing, and although it took a while to finally get it to answer me, I was satisfied nonetheless. Apparently, there were 4 total stages for a Colossal Serpent, and each one was far stronger than the previous. If I managed to reach the fourth stage and then evolve once again, I could change races once more, but that was for the future. However, despite the changes, the system was still being inaccurate. During my sleep, I''d inherited a couple quite juicy skills that I was eager to put to the test. However, I first really, really needed to get something in my stomach. I eyed the suspiciously egg-looking like thing that had encased me during my evolution, and like the good idiot I am, I tried tasting it. It tasted exactly like last time. Like shit. Yeah, let''s forget that ever happened. I was a bit awkward in my new body, but after a couple minutes of testing, I quickly got the hang of it. My new instincts certainly helped a lot. I made my way through the reef, taking a rather sinister pleasure at how literally everything fled for their lives at the mere feeling of my presence approaching. Finally, I reached the Killzone, and oh boy were things different now. Previously, I''d been merely average in the Killzone. My only real advantage had been my ability to actually think properly, but now, well... I dwarfed literally everything around here. I gleefully watched as most monsters around recoiled at my presence and quickly left me wide berth. Of course, this wasn''t the Reef where only cowards lived. There were still a quite a few monsters around here that eyed me with hunger in their eyes. Theywisely still left me alone, though. Satisfied at having asserted my dominance, I began to sniff around for something tasty. Thanks to my evolution, all my senses had been strenghtened by quite a bit. Hence, it was all too easy to follow a delicious-smelling trail all the way to it''s owner, a 10-meter long tuna with extremely sharp and large teeth. Although the tuna was a bit thicker than me, it wasn''t by much. I was now a proper giant, and I took advantage of the fact immediately, abusing my newfound speed and reflexes to easily catch the tuna in my jaws. My fangs easily sunk into the fish, and my venom immediately got to work subduing the creature. It struggled, trying to flee, but it was pointless. I was far too strong for it. I didn''t even have to use my coils to strangle it. It died after a few minutes between my venom and the death grip I held on it''s side. I quickly swallowed the fish, then, still unsatisfied with just this morsel, I kept up my search. After a couple hours, I was finally satisfied after having eaten seven other equally large (if not larger) monsters. I must admit, I suprised even myself with just how gluttonous I''d become, but I suppose it was due to my new race and also having just evolved. I didn''t even bother making my way back to the reef, and instead, sought out a nice-looking cave in the Killzone. I quickly murdered and ate it''s previous inhabitant, an octopus with mind-controlling power that only worked against itself in my case, and then curled inward as I began to practice one of the abilties I''d inherited during my dreams. Chapter 17 It took me a while, around one or two hours, but eventually, I managed to unlock the first of my new abilities, aura manipulation. Well... It sounds fancy, but it''s not actually all that difficult nor useful. It''s more or less a combination between stealth and intimidation, where you can project or hide your own presence in a way that can scare off opponents or hide you from them. I highly suspect that the so-called mighty being I came across during my early days had a skill like this, and it''d been manifesting its aura... for whatever reason. Anyways, once the system finally recognized that I did, in fact, have the skill, and gave me the appropriate skill in the menu, it became a lot easier to manage. I don''t know exactly what the difference is between having a skill not supported by the system and one that is, but I do know it''s a lot easier to do things if they are recognized. Does it make sense? Hell no, it defies all laws of reason. Do I care? Eh. Not particularly. I just want to be able to stroll through areas acting like a pompous bitch and making all lower life forms bow to me. Petty, thy name is me. Anyways, once I got the skill, I decided that I might as well laze around a bit for now. I''d been in somewhat of a rush since my rebirth, but now that I was confident in my survival ability, well... For the rest of the day, I slept happily, curled into myself. I was however rudely woken up by a screeching intruder, a scorpion-like crustacean with red eyes and a spooky hook on the tail. However, it''s spookiness paled to my justified wrath that I didn''t actually feel for waking me up. It tasted like curry chicken. For the rest of the month, I acted quite lazily. Whenever I felt like it, I would take strolls through the beautiful corals of the reef, or if I was hungry, I''d hunt down some monsters in the Killzone and eat them with impunity. Otherwise, I slept. There really wasn''t much to do, I had no access to books nor the internet, and even if I had them I wasn''t too sure how I would use them. For a 21st century ex-human, it was quite the dilemma. Still, life went on regardless of my boredom. Even if I complain a bit, I do have to admit that it was an enjoyable period. I also managed to get a couple of new fancy skills, which included those I received during my dreams. Skill (Aura Manipulation) gained Skill (Venom Cloud) gained ---> Merged into general skill Venom Skill (Colossus Scales) gained They weren''t anything life-changing, but the scales ability, which I inherited from my dreams, more or less made my scales a hell of a lot tougher, and also resistant to temperature changes, pressure, and just generally made me much more of a tank than I already was.You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story. Venom cloud is, just like the name, a venom cloud I spew out. It''s not very strong, but it is useful in quickly killing a bunch of small fries for quick snacks. This one I made myself, which made me quite happy. Anyways, my life became quite repetitive and boring, but also very tranquil and calm, which was fine for me. Still, I knew that, eventually, I would have to once again take a plunge and go out of my comfort zone and into the real ocean. Yes, I might have procrastinated a bit, but can you blame me? I''d just fought for my life like a madwoman on drugs, constantly fighting and stealing and fleeing from and against everything. Now that I was the strongest, the most badass around, I liked my new peace. Still, perhaps it was my instincts driving me to constantly seek out improvement, or perhaps it was my boredom or hell, perhaps some god or goddess decided to corrupt my mind, but here I am now, making the final preparations for my entry into the great blue. I was very apprehensive. I had absolutely zero information on whatever I should expect, but I did know that whatever monsters lived there were leagues ahead of even the absolute strongest beings in the Killzone, not to mention the by now pathetically weak reef. Nonetheless, as I swallowed up yet another weird abomination of a monster, I made my choice. Tomorrow morning, I would head out. ... Did I say making preparations? Sorry, I meant to say procrastinate for the last time. What the hell kind of preparations should I even do? And indeed, the next morning, I made my way towards the deepest and deepest parts of the Killzone. The deeper I went, the fewer monsters there were, but they were all much stronger than the usual cannon fodder that lived in the intersection between Killzone and reef. Still, they weren''t any real threat. I kept on making my way, and eventually, I reached the dreaded place. The ground had been steadily going down as I went forward, but here... It plummeted. I could see no end to it, and the only thing that remained was water. No corals, barely any sunlight, and definitely no caves to sleep and/or hide in. I felt as though I should be scared, but... I felt nothing. I still wasn''t sure if I should be thankful for my emotional suppression or not, but perhaps it is for the best. Steeling my nerves, I took the plunge and began to swim my way down to the bottom of the ocean. I would explore that area first, and then, I''d try to see more. For now, though, I simply needed more strength so that whatever horrors lived in this place didn''t kill me with a blink of their eye. Was it a smart choice? Maybe. Was it dangerous? Probably. But I''d already resigned myself to a life of almost constant danger, without any structure, laws, or police to keep me safe, only I could be my own lawmaker, my own bodyguard, and my own gun. Furthermore, it would be a lie to say I didn''t enjoy the feeling of constantly growing in strength, and it was undeniable that I''d stagnated in the Killzone, the exp and worth of my prey giving me little more than nothing. Still, as darkness overtook the world around me, I could feel the cold claws of dread that I should arguably be immune to grasping at my sides. Nonetheless, I pressed on, diving deeper and deeper. It took me well over three hours to reach the bottom of the ocean, and by that point, I was at serious risk of being squashed by the sea pressure. Which, actually, was very beneficial to me. It helped me level up... Err, master my Colossus Scales a lot faster than any of the other training ideas I''d tried before. Still, I was also effectively blind, which kinda sucked. Still, I had my nose and ears to rely on, and so I did. Although I couldn''t see anything with my eyes, the place was eerily quiet and devoid of any life I could tell of. I cautiously made my way forward, intent on exploring this new and strange place. Chapter 18 This world of darkness and silence was extremely unnerving. It was impossible for me to tell if an enemy was approaching, or if it was safe. Hence, I had to be in constant battle mode, which was extremely taxing for my psyche. However, even after hours of aimless wandering... There was nothing. No attacks, no noise, no nothing. Completely empty. I cautiously touched the floor with my nose, feeling it easily shift away. Sand, then. How peculiar. I wish I could say more about this place, but alas, there really isn''t much I can say about it. It''s dark, it''s creepy, and it feels as though there is nothing and yet everything is watching me. It was unnerving. I recoiled violently when I accidentally bumped into a rock, immediately retreating a good distance away. And thank god I did. The next moment, the water in the spot I''d just been in shifted violently, signifying something large just moved. I desperately tried to sense what was happening, but... nothing. There was no smell, no sound, no aura. And yet, I was sure that I''d just escaped from certain death. And yet, I couldn''t even tell what almost killed me. I was very, very quick to escape from that area. Thankfully, that... thing... did not chase me. In hindsight, perhaps that thing was in my same situation, blind to everything except touch, and that was how it knew I was there but didn''t bother chasing me. Who knows. I certainly don''t, and I hardly care to find out. I continued my search, now much more subdued. If only I could see something, anything, this whole trip would be a thousand times easier. ... I suddenly had an idea. Oh god, if this works, I will proclaim myself the genius of geniuses, the best and brightest danger noodle to have ever noodled. Snickering in my mind at my own shitty joke, I dug myself into the sand, only leaving my head out. Then, I began to concentrate on my Aura Manipulation. During my ''lazy period'', I hadn''t actually been completely useless. I''d still worked quite hard at understanding the ins and outs of my new skills, as well as how to efficiently use them. Theoretically, if I could somehow see through auras, they would replace the need for light to act as a medium. Then, I could easily see in the dark! ... Ok, let''s be real, that makes zero sense. Still, this world makes no fucking sense, so why shouldn''t it work? It''s worth a shot, at least. I focused my entire mind inward, focusing on my own aura. It had a slithery feeling and vaguely resembled a giant snake, just like the real thing. I concentrated every little bit of myself into my aura, and with a gentle push, I guided my aura to my body''s eyes. Carefully, I ''returned'' to my body, but the moment I did, I accidentally let my aura go, and it went back into my body. Frustrated, I tried again... and again... and again...The author''s tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon. After the 200th try, I was ready to kill someone. Every time it seemed as though I''d got it, I would accidentally let it go at the last instant. It was... frustrating. Nonetheless, it was very beneficial for my skill mastery, which shot up from the 7% I''d grinded during my lazy days to 10% in such a short time. Eventually, after what must have been at least 300 tries... I succeded, and boy was it strange. It was like seeing in black and white, and everything was still blurry. Furthermore, I could see lingering auras all around, and even vaguely see more concentrated auras far, far away that must have been other living beings. It''s hard to explain exactly what and how I saw what I did, but it was useful. After half a dozen seconds though, I accidentally let my aura slip, and the world was back to darkness. However, I did earn a sweet skill. Skill (Aura Sight) gained ---> merged into skill Aura Manipulation, 5% mastery gained due to the merge. Thanks to having earned the skill, my next attempts were much easier. Eventually, after only another couple hours of practice, I was able to hold the sight for as long as I needed it to, although I wasn''t sure if it would also hold up during combat. Still, it was a start. With my newfound sight, I immediately began exploring once more, feeling a lot more confident. ... Holy shit. That is definitely not a rock. Nope nope nope nope nope nope! I fled as fast as I could, not stopping until I was a good 10 or so miles away. Yeah, that''s not a rock. Definitely not a rock. Once I was sufficiently far from that monstrosity, I once more began to investigate the area... After reactivating my sight, of course. In hindsight, blindly running away like that might not have been a good idea... Eh, I lived to tell the tale, so it must not have been that bad, right? Ignoring that little shameful moment, I did eventually find another monster, one a bit less overpowered and oversized. It was a sea slug that was somehow larger than two trucks put together. It had no eyes, and it slowly lumbered forward, sucking up the ground and then spitting it out through its anus. Now, if this world has taught me anything so far, it''s that appearances can be deceiving. For example, this perfect example of what should be a huge load of Disgusting might very well be the most delicious meal I will ever eat. Hence, discrimination in death is unacceptable! ... Okay, that''s a lie. I''m just hungry, and that thing looks as dumb as a box of rocks, and also pretty defenseless. I slowly swam around it, examining it. The slug didn''t react to my presence at all, so as a test, I exhaled out a cloud of my venom on its body. Its skin began to sizzle quite violently, and the slug began to squirm. I backed away, waiting to see if it would do something. However, it did nothing. After a while, the sizzling stop, and the mucus that had been infected was easily shed off, with new mucus quickly replacing it. Now feeling a bit more curious, I once more exhaled venom, but this time, I made the density, power, and quantity of my venom much higher, and then exhaled it right into its gross face. The thing began to shake violently, and I once again put some distance between us, which proved to be quite a good idea as its mucus suddenly exploded outwards in the form of barbed tentacles wildly swinging everywhere, attempting to catch and probably murder whatever attacked it. Which in this case would be good old me. When one of the tentacles came a bit too close to me for my liking, I was quick to snap my jaws around it, easily severing it away from the rest. I quickly swam to another spot, not too close and not too far, easily avoiding the rush of tentacles that charged at my previous spot. Instead, I focused on tasting this weird tentacle-mucus thing. It was... Surprisingly good? It reminded me of chocolate pudding, except it was a bit denser than that. Still... It was good enough for me. Thanks to its blindness and relative slowness, it was all too easy to snap my jaws around one side of it''s body, retreat while avoiding the rush of tentacles, attack another spot, dodge, repeat. After only a dozen minutes of this, the giant slug finally perished, it''s crazed tentacles finally going still. Gobbling up the slug was surprisingly easy. Its body was squishy and malleable, which made it easy to stuff into my jaws and down my throat. Furthermore, it had a surprisingly very high quality, but I suppose that was to be expected of an open ocean beast. Still... If I''d met this thing while blind myself... I shivered at the thought. Yeah, thank god for my idea. Chapter 19 Days passed as I continued to travel aimlessly amongst the endless ocean, constantly having to resist against enough water pressure to squash rocks. While it did wonders for my mastery of Colossus Scales, it was also very, very annoying and sometimes painful. Still, I persisted. I came across multiple other slugs, all of which I happily ate. Although I''d refrained last time from using my devour skill, I used it the next times, making the process of killing these slugs much faster and safer. I also came across multiple other lumbering giants. There was a whale the size of a warship swimming over me at one point, and I''d been forced to bury myself under the sand, hoping to god that the titan didn''t notice me. Thankfully, it didn''t, or else I probably wouldn''t be here to tell the tale. The worst thing was, that whale wasn''t even the worst monster I saw. There was a massive hammerhead shark that reeked of blood and had an aura on it that just screamed of danger and death. Its smell was probably what saved me, as I was able to smell it before I saw it, and successfully hid in time. There were a bunch of other monsters that had me hiding from them, but they weren''t quite as impressive as the whale and the shark. Nonetheless, I wasn''t exactly just hiding. Other than the slugs, I happily gobbled up anything and everything that looked like I might be able to take on, and since most things this deep down are blind, and I wasn''t, it was usually pretty easy. Well, pretty easy still implies that if I made one mistake, I would be the one becoming food, not them. Which is unacceptable, since everyone knows I''m the best thing to have ever happened to this ocean since the dawn of time. ... Okay, that''s a lie, but at least I believe that. Kind of. Anyways, as each day passed by, I got stronger. Although I sure as hell didn''t feel like that, considering I still had to be extremely careful and hide every time I sense monsters too strong for me to handle, but at least the slugs and my other prey were becoming easier and easier to kill, so I guess that''s progress...?If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. By the end of my first week in the deep, deep ocean, my status had grown quite a bit. [Nameless] [Colossal Serpent (1st Stage)] Age - 0 years Evolution Progress - 30% Mastery - [Serpent''s Dance - 40%], [Devour - 20%], [Extreme Constriction - 70%], [Aura Manipulation - 20%], [Colossus Scales - 50%] It was far from impressive everything considered, but things were at least coming along nicely. I was still ways away from going up a stage, but considering that during my time at the reef I''d only gotten like 2% progress in the entire time, I took this as a success. Now, I was about ready to head back to the reef for a small break. I''d been in this place for what seemed like forever, and it was starting to stress my nerves. There was only one glaring problem. I... was lost. I''m a fucking idiot, I know, but I thought I would surely remember what direction I was supposed to go in to get to the reef, but even after an entire day of searching, I couldn''t find my reef. If I could panic, I would surely be doing just that now. Instead, I found myself having to constantly swim along the bottom floor in a straight line. My line of sight was only around one or two kilometers long, far from enough to spot the reef from the distance I put between me and it during my week of stupidly aimless travel. And so, with great reluctance, I found myself being forced to live in this place. Originally, I wanted to stay here for a week at a time, taking breaks in between, but I really should have remembered that I do not have a photographic memory, and even if I did, how the hell was I supposed to remember all the twists and turns I did during my exploring? As I kept on grumbling inwardly, I still happily pounced on any and all slugs I came across, as I considered them quite the delicacy. They were relatively easy prey once someone figured out their few tricks, and I was happy to exploit their stupidity. With my mood a bit improved from the few slugs and even a bus-sized crab, I considered the positives. I might be lost, but at least this place wasn''t lacking in food for me to grow, and yet it was also quite empty overall. The perfect combination if you ask me. Most of the serious threats I''d seen so far had come from above water, so I suspected that they either resided in the middle or surface of the water, and I had no real way of knowing which. Hence, I decided to postpone my exploration of the waters above, instead choosing to grind a bit more down here where it''s nice and safe. I might not be completely safe here, but at least this place wasn''t as boring as the reef... Alright, I''m making excuses for my stupidity. I continued to slither along the floor, nose buried in the sand, trying to sniff out any potential prey trying to hide in the sand. I''d caught a couple of clams like this, and although they were tough nuts to crack, their taste alone was very much worth it. And, of course, it was just my luck when the floor collapsed under my nose, revealing a strange cavern. Chapter 20 I cautiously approached the collapsed cave-looking like crevice that had formed in the ground after my nose accidentally bumped into it. Did I run away the moment I sensed the collapse happening? Yup. Am I a coward because of it? Who knows. I don''t think I am. I''m just... too cautious. The cave looked quite different from most other cracks in walls that I''d resided in so far. No, this one was obviously man-made, or at least something made it. How could I tell? Well... The first obvious sign about it was that the water, where I was currently swimming in, didn''t continue down. There was actual god damn air in there. How is that even possible? That doesn''t make any bloody sense! The water is floating above the air, somehow. Oh, yes. I forgot. This world has magic. I still don''t regret not picking the magic path. I like being big and powerful. I was half-tempted to turn away and pretend this never happened, but I was also quite curious to see whatever was in there. Well, as curious as I could be, I guess. I cautiously poked my nose into the air, and oh boy was it weird. For some reason, I could actually... breathe this air? The hell? Back at the reef, I''d tried to stick my head out into the air, and that air I definitely couldn''t breathe. But, somehow, this air I could? Too many questions, too little answers. I retracted my head back into the waters, peering down suspiciously. I could probably stick four or five meters of my body into this cavern while still being able to quickly retreat upwards into the water if I wanted, but that carried a risk in and of itself. Still, I did it anyway. Now that I could look around a bit better, the cavern looked more like a fancy house than anything else. There were stones that resembled chairs and tables, a god damn bookshelf with no books on it, and... what the hell was this smell? It was like fish but combined with... something else. I couldn''t identify it, but it did make me quite curious. Furthermore, although I''d yet to refine a skill or even make sense of how I did it, I could smell no danger coming from the source, so I felt a bit more confident. I dropped down with my whole body, landing with a heavy thump. I didn''t even feel the impact though, as it was nothing compared to what some of my even more generic prey can dish out. I took my time sniffing around the area, prodding and poking everything. The tables had been literally formed from the stone below them, and they couldn''t really be moved without shattering them. The same went for the chairs.Stolen novel; please report. Then, I came across my worst nemesis in this new life. My new antithesis, the thing which I don''t think I can ever look at with the eyes I had as a human. A door. How the hell am I even supposed to go through that? I can smell the fish-thing coming from the other side, but I''m far too large to get through that. Well... Violence is the answer, I suppose. I reared back, then struck the door with the full weight of my head and body. The door, which was made of some sort of light and brittle stone, shattered, along with the wall around it. A surprisingly feminine and humanoid screech came from the other side, and I was suddenly assaulted by one of the worst noises there are. Crying sobs. The hell? I poked my head into the newly opened room, and oh boy did my eyes burn for a second. It had weird stones that shined quite brightly, and my eyes which had been so used to darkness did like that one bit. I would have closed them, but I, unfortunately, could not do so, being a serpent and all. Hence, it was quite painful. Still, my eyes quickly adjusted and my insane regeneration fixed any possible problems. I could have looked using my aura sight, but I''d lost control of that due to the shock. Still, it only took half a dozen seconds or so for my normal sight to return, so I didn''t bother activating it. ... Why the hell is this room so fancy? It had a huge carpet covering the entire floor, had an area that resembled a kitchen, another area that was obviously a bed area, and even a medium-sized bath at the corner. What in the nine hells was all of this? Why the hell is there a 5-star hotel room at the bottom of the fucking ocean? I have so many questions, and I knew exactly who could answer them... maybe. I guessed the owner, or at least resident, of this place must have been the half-fish, half-something. So, it''s either a mermaid or some kind of horrible abomination. I hope it''s the second. I slithered along, careful not to destroy anything more than I already had. The place did look quite good, after all, and it would be a crime to destroy such beauty. I stopped when I arrived at the bed. It had soft-looking sheets and pillows, and even a small stuffed toy at its side. Really now, a stuffed seal? Snakes are obviously superior, I mentally snickered. Anyways, I didn''t even really need to use my nose to find whoever this guy or gal was. I could hear their labored breathing as clear as day, and I decided to make that clear by peering down under the bed. I was greeted with a scream and another plush toy to the face. How rude. I ate monsters for far less, you know. The little person under the bed was actually a... fairly human-looking girl? She smelled like fish, but other than the little scales on her legs and arms, I couldn''t really see much resemblance to the mermaids of my culture. She screamed and crawled away, eyes wet with tears. Ah, yes. I suspect she would be scared of a giant 30-meter long snake. I was, after all, probably quite a bit longer than this entire room. It''s a shame I can''t exactly tell her she''s a bit too skinny for my tastes. Just kidding, I wouldn''t eat another person without good reason, and she looks person enough. I retreated away from the bed and settled myself into the corner. Well, I suppose my only choice is to wait her out. Siege tactics are not exactly my strong point, but the brat probably fares even worse than I do at waiting games. Chapter 21 Shelly hid further under the bed as the scary giant snake slithered off, it''s creepy yellow eyes never leaving her trembling form. She suppressed a sob, futilely trying to stop her shaking body. Where were her parents? Her guards? Why had nobody come to rescue her when they heard the very loud crashing sound?? She''d woken up to the sound of a loud and heavy thump coming from some distance away. She''d thought it was just some of her guards getting rowdy, but she figured otherwise when a slithery sound came closer and closer. She''d hid under the bed, scared of whatever was approaching her room. Her heart thumped loudly, her mind whirring at maximum overdrive, going over every tidbit of information she''d learned from her mother. Was it an assassin? But mom said she was safe here, and that assassins were quiet and sneaky. And this was only confirmed when the door literally exploded, a titanic snake bursting into her room. She''d cried out in suprise and fear, and when the snake had stuffed it''s far too large head near the edge of the bed, looking at her, she''d thrown her favorite plush at it, trying to scare it off. It hadn''t even flinched, but it still slowly backed off for some reason. She thought it might have been readying itself for a charge at her, but when it simply stood there, waiting while staring at her, she thought the worst. And as minutes turned to hours, she became more and more anxious. Her legs and arms were cramped from stuffing herself under such a small place for so long, and she was starting to get hungry. She hid another sob, but after another 20 minutes of waiting, she broke down and began to cry out for her mother and father. Her only answer was silence, and a quick look at the snake proved that it was still staring at her, just as impassively as before. A loud rumble suddenly came from her belly, and her face heated up in shame. She quickly looked around, and only then remembered that there was no one around. Tears threatened to come out again, but a shifting noise brought her attention away from her lack of parents. The large snake was leaving. Why was it leaving? Before it fully left from the door it shattered, it''s head popped up again, stared at her for a couple seconds before it fully left. Shelly waited for another few minutes, but then quickly came out. Poking her head out of the shattered door, she gasped at the unfamiliar sight in front of her. Where were the luxurious hallways of her dad''s castle? Where were the servants? The guards? Why was it all stone? Why was it so dark? As Shelly asked herself all of this, she unhappily got back into her room and hugged the plush toy she''d thrown at the big mean snake. Her father would come get her, he always did. He said he was the strongest in all of Oceania, and her daddy never lied. Half an hour passed in silence, and Shelly got increasingly uncomfortable. She was hungry, lonely, and she wasn''t used to being alone for so long.Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on the original website. Luckily, or perhaps unluckily, she wouldn''t be alone for much longer. She''d immediately hid under the bed again when she''d heard the thump coming from down the mysterious hallway, and a couple dozen seconds later, the snake appeared in her room again. In it''s jaws was a large strip of flesh from something, but Shelly didn''t know exactly what. The snake approached her bed, dropped the flesh in front of her, and then went back a bit. Observing her. Feeling her stomach begging her to take the offer, and also suprised the snake had brought her food, Shelly cautiously crawled out of the bed and grabbed the meat. She tried to rip a piece off, but it was too tough for her to do so. She then tried to directly bite a piece off, and that worked a little better. It didn''t taste as good as the food her chefs usually made, but she was too hungry to care. 10 minutes later, Shelly had only eaten a small portion of the huge chunk of flesh, but she was nice and full at least. She cautiously backed away from the snake, but then thought otherwise. She wasn''t naive like her little sister, she didn''t randomly trust strangers, but still... The snake had just offered her food, and she''d heard from her dad that their royal line was revered amongst the inhabitants of Oceania. Perhaps the snake had recognized her? Cautiously, she approached the snake, keeping her palms open. The snake seemed rather lazy in response to her approach, simply keeping it''s eyes on her while casually lying on it''s own coils. A large, longue tongue creeped out of it''s jaws when she came within a couple meters of it though, flickering up and down in warning. Shelly, having been trained in the body language of all kinds of marine life, waited for a bit until the tongue went back into it''s mouth, and then slowly reached up... ... And was too short to reach the snake''s forehead. She got on her toes, trying to touch it, but didn''t manage. Frustrated, she huffed in annoyance and tried to climb the coils in front of her to reach the snake''s forehead, which only seemed to be getting higher and higher. It was only three minutes later, after a lot of jumping around and trying various tactics that she realized she''d completely forgotten all of her training, and another instant to realize that the snake had been purposely playing with her. She paused her latest attempt at reaching that damned forehead, trying to climb across the snake''s back to reach it''s head. Suddenly, she felt as though perhaps she was the naive one, and not her sister. As if sensing her shift, the snake itself reached out, letting her touch it''s forehead, although it was more akin to Shelly touching it''s snout. Remembering her magic lessons with Old Man Gilgamesh, she focused her mana in her mind and projected it into the serpent''s own mind, utilizing her royal bloodline as a crutch to activate the spell. "H-hello?" She mentally said, hoping it''d worked. The snake didn''t move, and Shelly didn''t notice it, but it''s eyes got a bit brighter. "Guten tag, little princess." A strangely robotic and dispassionate voice responded. It sounded vaguely feminine, but Shelly couldn''t tell for sure. Shelly cheered loudly and yelled a "I did it!", only to lose control of the spell a moment after. Groaning in frustration, Shelly hurriedly cast another telepathy spell. "Um, hi! I''m Shelly, who are you, Mr. Snake?" She mentally asked, unsure of what to say. Would it eat her if she asked it where her parents were? "Again, guten tag, little princess. I have yet to find a name for myself in this world, so just calling me snake would suffice. Also, it''s ms, not mr." The same empty voice responded, lacking any tangible emotion. "O-oh." Shelly mentally stuttered. Steeling herself, she cautiously asked, "U-um, did you eat my parents? B-because if you did, I''ll get really angry!" "... Dear, do you know where we are?" The snake said, diverting the topic. Shelly fell for it like a gullible person falls for the gullible on the ceiling joke. "T-the royal palace?" She said, more as a question than statement. A sudden surge of frustration came through to Shelly from the snake''s side before it immediately vanished, and the empty voice of the snake mentally transmitted the words that would forever change Shelly. "... I live in a world surrounded by idiots." Or perhaps they would simply confuse her. She wasn''t the brighest girl around, after all. Chapter 22 I almost felt bad for tricking this brat, but she''s just so... gullible. I bring her the remains of some random relatively small tuna I caught and massacred, and the next thing I know she''s going all monkey climbing on me. Still, she wasn''t necessarily a bad child. And I''m not just saying this because I''m very interested in that telepathy spell of hers, even if that''s a big part of it. "Ms. Snake, do you know where my parents are?" The little girl next to me asked, her thoughts going directly into my head. It still felt unnerving and a bit weird, but not necessarily bad. I mentally rolled my eyes at her question, with this one being the fifth time she asked. "Dear, I have no idea," I said. My own ''voice'' felt weird, quite different from my human voice. I was currently wrapped around myself, looking down at the girl as she frolicked around, babbling about this and that. Earning her trust had been a little too easy for my liking, and if I''d still been human I might have told her not to trust strangers like this. However, I was a large murder noddle. I don''t do morality. "Yesss, very interesting," I added randomly to her babble to keep the illusion of me listening to her going. She nodded excitedly and kept on talking about how great her daddy was and how he would come to find her. I didn''t know which father she was talking about, but from how she constantly and unintentionally hinted at this being a ''castle'' in a ''city'', I supposed that, just perhaps, she might either have serious delusions, or someone pulled an abracadabra on her. Instead of listening to her, I thought over my findings regarding her strange spell. I''d spoken 5 different languages one after the other, but she seemed to understand all of them, just as I could understand her. I could only suppose that the spell bypassed linguistical barriers... Not that any of this made any logical sense. Finally, after a while, the little mermaid yawned loudly, her big eyes looking up at me tiredly. I tilted my head slightly in question at her gaze. The connection she''d established had more or less collapsed, and only my rather inexpert use of aura had kept the connection from falling apart. I was starting to feel as though this whole aura thing was one big magic replacement that didn''t actually do magic. How lame. "I''m tired..." She murmured through our link, and then crawled away from me and into her bed. Iallowed the telepathic link to fade away in response, watching as she crawled under the sheets of her bed and fell asleep in a matter of moments. I watched her for another couple moments, making sure she was fully asleep before slithering my way out of this little cave/prison and into the wider ocean. I had a lot of suspicions on this whole encounter. Either some bored god staged this to fuck with me, or perhaps some sort of magic formation detected and approved of me, and ''allowed'' me to enter. Or perhaps it was just dumb luck. Who knows. Nonetheless, itwas weird having someone to converse with after such a long time. I''d gotten used to being all in my lonesome, and suddenly falling headfirst into conversations with a naive child was... discerning.Reading on this site? This novel is published elsewhere. Support the author by seeking out the original. It wasn''t bad per se, just... Not what I expected it to be like. What a shame. I suppose I truly have changed. As I swam around the ocean, I would occasionally slam my tail (or end of my body, whichever you wanna call it) on the ground in order to leave a mark. Then, after having eaten a nice little meal consisting of a couple of slugs and a toothless shark, I retraced my ''steps'' all the way back to the cave. After checking in and making sure the princess was still asleep, I wanted to explore the rest of the cave, but found myself at a loss. It was literally just one long hallway to the girl''s room, and nothing else. Still, when I heard a louder-than normal thump coming from the entrance as I silently poked around the mermaid''s room, I knew that what I feared would happen... Well, happened. I sent a quick (and false) prayer to whatever or whoever was listening that this was nothing too strong, and made my way out of the room and towards the entrance. Thankfully, it was nothing out of the ordinary. Simply a car-sized crab, which was actually pretty small all things considered. Still, I was out of my element. My Serpent Dance skill would only barely help me here, so it might actually be a bit dangerous. I didn''t bother hiding as I approached the crab, who was heading directly in my direction, a.k.a, the princess'' direction. I immediately noted how, instead of retreating like any normal creature of its size would in front of a titan like me, the damned crab charged me. Its claws were held forward, ready to snap me into my flesh. Still... It wasn''t exactly dangerous. I was quick enough to easily avoid the claws and latch my teeth to it''ssofter behind while my coils wrapped around its claws and body, blocking and squeezing them hard enough that cracks began to form almost immediately. The noise seemed to have woken the princess up, judging by the soft thump and following ''oww'' coming from her room. I ignored her in favor of focusing on killing this crab, which wouldn''t take much longer. It couldn''t move, and with my venom pumping into its squishy insides, it would take but a few minutes for it to die. And indeed, two minutes later, the death message of the crab came into my vision. I ignored it and instead unwrapped myself from the crab, ignoring the wide-eyed princess, who was hiding behind what little remained of her room''s door, occasionally peeking at me. I flicked my tongue out, tasting the air. Yup, she''d die if she so much as touched this crab, my remaining venom would make quick work of her. Best to get rid of it. ... Well, away from her prying eyes. I don''t know much about mermaid culture, but I doubt my way of eating would be considered appropriate in her eyes. I gave her a quick look, but instead of going back to her room like I hoped she''d do, she bounded over to me, eyes sparkling. "Hrdosf fkwak mulli! Fsaf akak muu!" She excitedly babbled, and only then seemed to realize I couldn''t exactly understand her jabbering without her telepathy. Still, her excitement didn''t seem to vanish as she reached up to my forehead, which I lowered to her height, and activated her spell. "Wow! You were so cool, Ms. Snake! That mean crab was like super big, but you killed it so quickly!" ... Well, I suppose that, perhaps, mermaid culture isn''t as pure and innocent as I thought it was. That''s better for me, I guess. "... Yesss. Very quickly. But it is not safe here. Others may come, and I may not be around to... help." I said, trying to word it in a nice enough way. I didn''t particularly care for this little girl, but it''d be a shame to have my only source of conversation die on me. "Oh..." She deflated, but then, as if a switch went off on her head, she puffed out her young chest and said, "Don''t worry, my dad will come!" Alright. That''s enough delusion for this one. "Dear, your dad won''t come." Her eyes went wide. "What? Why not!" "... Dear, we''re in the bottom of the ocean, in the middle of god knows where. There is no castle, no city. I haven''t seen anybody like you around here, and I''ve been here for long enough to know." I would have felt bad about saying such a cruel thing to a little girl, but I wasn''t able to. Still, the confused and hurt look on her face did make me think over my wording. Oh well, she''ll get over it. I turned away from her and grabbed the crab carcass before bringing it out of her sight, where I quickly swallowed it up. It tasted quite bitter. Side Chapter 1 "Vision of Everland." He whispered, his vision shifting away from his own eyes, things so ancient they barely worked anymore, and settling down upon a certain cave very, very far away. He couldn''t see particularly well at this distance, his spell only allowing for a maximum of 1000 kilometers of distance for perfect vision. This was far, far beyond that. Still, he was able to get a general picture of the situation. When he''d felt his spell activating and then collapsing, he''d worried something might have gone wrong, but luckily, it seemed as though everything had gone off well. The spell had a day-long lag until it reached him, meaning that if something went wrong, there would be very little he could do. And even if he knew in time, he was still too far away, and way too old to go help out his little Shelly. When he saw what could only be a Colossal Serpent within his dear daughter''s cave, he felt his heart seize in panic. Although it was only a first stage, first evolution monster, it was still exceedingly dangerous even for hardened veterans of war. For his little girl who''d been asleep for so long, it would mean certain death. However, fate seemed to smile down at him. Instead of finding his little girl within the monster''s stomach, he found her silently sitting upon her bed, just as untouched by the claws of time as she had been twenty years ago. He didn''t regret what he''d done, but he desperately wished there would have been another way. Something that wouldn''t have doomed his beloved daughter like this. The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement. The Colossal Snake slithered around his daughter''s room, curiously poking her toys and shells with it''s nose. It''s eyes were a gloomy yellow, as typical of the snakeling genotype. However, these eyes, much to his suprise, weren''t the eyes of a mindless monster. Although well hidden beneath a veil of emotionlessness, it''s eyes contained an unmistakable intelligence as it prodded things, moving with a grace and purpose that normal beasts simply couldn''t match. This was different. Sure, he''d seen intelligent monsters. Lots of them, in fact, but never so low in the evolutionary chain, and never were they as friendly as this one seemed to be. This was only further proven when he saw his dear daughter approach the snake with little to no caution. Instead of reacting violently, the snake simply lowered it''s large head down to her level, and allowed his daughter to cast her telepathy spell. The telepathy spell Shelly had learned oh so long ago was the most basic of basic communication spells. Through his own spell, he could see her trembling mana being held firm by the monster''s soulpower. He couldn''t hear whatever they were telling each other, but seeing just this much was enough. He silently thanked the Sea God for his kindness in providing his little one with such a protector. Monsters might be unreliable and brutal, but they were rarely treacherous, and he knew firsthand just how easily his daughter could wrap even the most hardened of men and women around her little finger without even meaning to. Feeling his mana begin to run low, he cut off the spell, wincing as his vision returned to his own eyes. With his age, his mana supply was drastically falling year by year. Even though he might have been the single highest-levelled merman around, he never did manage to cast off the shackles of time like some other old monsters did. He sighed, feeling his whole body trembling from the difficult and tiring spell he just cast. He limped off, feeling curious presences approaching. He didn''t wish to reveal himself. Not yet. Not when his last reason for living was so close to casting off the shackles he himself had been forced to put on her. Chapter 23 I allowed the little mermaid to once more do her telepathy thing, having let her stew over my words for a bit. She seemed upset, a tight frown on her face and defiance in her eyes. As she placed her hand on my forehead, I actively tried to emulate the feeling of telepathy through my aura, attempting to do a similar spell to her own. It didn''t work, obviously, but that might just be because of a lack of practice. "U-um... Are you... Are you sure you didn''t see my father?" She asked, eyes threatening to burst with tears. I stared down at her for a bit, refusing to answer. Finally, I turned away and went towards the entrance to the cave. "H-hey! Wait! Where are you going?!" The mermaid yelled, quickly following after me. Compared to me, she was painfully slow, and so, so very small. Hence, I had to both slow down and also be careful that I didn''t accidentally squish her. I ignored her yet again, and instead, I brought her to the huge hole in the ceiling, where the entire ocean rested above. She seemed a bit confused at first when I stopped, and she was squinting hard, unable to see. Then, as if reading my mind, she got to work casting some sort of spell. When she was finished, a small ball of bright light came out of her hand and floated nearby, illuminating the area. She gaped at the sight. "... What..." She murmured, eyes wide and such a hurt and abandoned look that, had I still been a human, I might have comforted her. However, I had neither the means nor the will to do so now. "Dear," I called out to her through the link she''d by now abandoned but that I was keeping up though my messy use of aura. "I do not know what happened to you, nor even who you are. And, frankly, I do not care. I have far bigger problems to worry about. However, I can tell you from personal experience that... things... can happen. However, no matter how bleak it may seem now, as long as you try your hardest, things will improve eventually. You may die during the process, but at least you''ll die knowing you''ve done your best." I knew I wasn''t really talking to her. Perhaps I was projecting myself onto her a bit, but... Those words just kind of came out. "... I thought... I thought daddy sent you to be with me..." She murmured, ugly tears running down her eyes yet again. "But, if daddy didn''t send you... who did?" She asked me, trying her hardest to stop herself from breaking down into another sobbing fit. I''ve never liked crybabies. However, I do suppose I can tolerate her weakness. She didn''t look much older than 9 or 10 years old, and her whole world had just been ripped away from her. Oh well. "Nobody did, dear. I stumbled into this place by accident while I was searching for some food. You''re quite lucky I was the one to find you, and not literally any other creature living within this abyss."This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it "..." She didn''t answer me as she continued staring up into the seemingly endless ocean resting above her head. Even as her light spell began to run out, she didn''t stop, seemingly lost in thought. Then, she tried to reach out to it, touch the waters above. I was quick to stop her, however. I didn''t exactly need to since she obviously couldn''t reach the water that was quite a bit too high up for her to reach, but it was still better to inform her of the danger. "Don''t touch it. Although this cave is exempt from it for some reason, the waters above are heavy enough to turn you into a little cube." I said casually. She bit her lips so hard blue blood came out. "Then... What am I supposed to do!?" She screamed/cried out. I was taken aback at her sudden change in mood but didn''t have the opportunity to say anything as she continued. "I don''t remember what happened! My mom... my dad... my brothers... I don''t know where they are! Where is Oceania!? I just want my family back! And now I can''t even get out of this stupid place..." She broke down in tears yet again at the end. I could only look at her with a vague sense of surprise. Finally, I decided to just go ahead and tell her. "Dear," I called out through our telepathic link to get her attention. "You are not the only one to have lost everything." She stopped her sniffling and looked at me. "I, too, have lost everything. And by everything, I mean everything. I was lucky enough to get a second chance, however, my odds were never good. Nonetheless, I survived. Then... why can''t you?" I told her. She was looking at me a bit weirdly. ''Wow, thanks, I know my speeches aren''t that good, but you don''t have to make it obvious'' I thought to myself. "Look, what I''m trying to say is... Even if you''re still too young and weak to find the answers to everything, what''s stopping you from becoming stronger and searching out your parents?" She seemed pleasantly surprised at my words. She turned her eyes and looked at me with hopeful eyes. "Y-yeah! You''re right! But... W-will you help me?" "No." She looked down, her eyes that had been filled with so much hope now looked like the eyes of a ghost. "Don''t take it the wrong way, dear. I don''t know you. I don''t care about you. To me, you are nothing but a convenient partner in conversation in what has been months upon months of nothing but loneliness and slaughter. Still, I do not mind helping you out right now." She looked back up at me, now a bit lost in my reasoning. "But you just said you won''t help me?" "I won''t help you. I will only give you an opportunity if only to take away some of my boredom. However, I will not follow you in whatever you wish to do. I have my own path, just as you have your own. Now, enough dilly-dallying. Go back to your room. I have an idea." "B-but..." She tried to say, but I collapsed our mental link before she could say anything more. She looked vaguely surprised when she felt her own spell fall, and a quick look from me sent her reluctantly on her way. Perhaps I was being a bit harsh with such a young child, but... My brutal honesty was, in my opinion, a far better option to ignorance, or worse, the false promises that everything would be good and okay. I was going to make her suffer. Perhaps she might even come to hate me, but in the end, it would be for her own good. As long as I did what I felt was enough for her, that would be enough. I do not truly care about her feelings towards me, although I''d prefer they remain positive. And so, I entered back into the ocean, constantly keeping a mental note of where the cave was. When I found an appropriate target, I would begin the little girl''s training. ... Who still hasn''t told me her name. Oh well. It''s probably going to be some dumb name stereotypical of mermaids, so I probably shouldn''t even want to know it. Chapter 24 I cautiously entered into the cave, careful not to shake my head too much. I could hear the little mermaid''s breathing further down the cave, coming from her room. I entered her room and found her on her bed, hugging her own knees and with her face buried in said knees. I couldn''t tell if she was asleep or not, but I wasn''t nice enough to let her off after having gone through such trouble for her. Using the tip of my tail, I prodded her awake. She reluctantly looked up, dark bags under her eye clear as day. It was eerily human, but I suppose overall there was little difference between her and a human so far. Who knows though. She might be hiding an alien-like second jaw somewhere up her ass. Not that I can judge much, considering I''m a fucking snake. She looked at me with a tired expression. I don''t know what she''d been doing over the day or so I was away, but judging from her bloodied knuckles, it most likely was not something any reasonable parent would approve of. Good thing I wasn''t her parent since what I was about to do was probably a lot worse. I opened my maw, and out came a huge mouthful of very, very small fish, barely 30cm in length each. I''d had to track these idiots down for quite a while, but when I found them, I just lunged and put in my mouth as many as I could. Good stuff. I lowered my head and stared at the little girl, who was looking at the fishies with a baffled look on her cute little face. Seriously, why was she looking at them with pity? She babbled something that I couldn''t understand, so I gently whacked her head with my tail. She shot me an angry look, red cheeks all puffed out. I offered my head to her, and she touched it after a bit of incoherent mumbling. "We have to help them! They''re suffering! Why did you bring them here?" She asked me in rapid succession. Aah, yes. She praises me for killing a crab but wants to help some random small and dumb fish. I call racism. "Dear, we are not going to ''help'' them. In fact, you''re going to kill them. All." "W-what?" She asked, a stunned look on her face. Seriously, what did she expect? "You said you wanted to become stronger. I said I''d help you out a bit. So, go ahead. Get stronger. Level up. Or is your family not worth your effort? Are a couple of mindless fish worth more than your own hope and dreams? Are you such a coward tha-" "I GET IT! SHUT UP!" She screamed in my mind. I would have recoiled in surprise, but this was the outcome I was hoping for, so instead, I opened my mouth, put it next to my body, and basically punched my own fangs in.Unauthorized usage: this narrative is on Amazon without the author''s consent. Report any sightings. One of them broke off painfully. A stream of blue blood came out, but I quickly shut my mouth, running my tongue over my already regenerating tooth to soothe the pain. "W-what are you doing?" She asked, eyeing the 40cm long, almost spear-like fang now resting on the ground. "P-pick it up, dear. Do you want to be strong? You need levels. I don''t know howexactly you mermaids work, but I''m sure killing these little things, no matter how weak they may be, will be helpful to you. S-so, get to killing." I said, trying to keep the shaking out of my voice as I felt my new fang slowly push itself into my mouth. God damn it, this hurt like hell. "B-but..." She hesitated. At this point, I was starting to get a bit pissed off, and regardless of the fact that I couldn''t physically get angry, I somehow felt like it. "Kill. The. Damn. Fish." I said, slowly. She slumped down, clumsily tried to pick up my fang and waddled over to the flopping fishes. They could breathe this strange air, but they obviously couldn''t really move. She looked at the first fish with an almost apologetic look, glanced back my way, then, with a loud battle cry, stabbed her spear down into the fish. ... And somehow missed. I want my hands back just so I can facepalm. "T-this is heavy!" She said defensively, an embarrassed blush on her cheeks. "Yes, I''m sure it is. Hurry up please, I''d like to get down to more serious things." I retorted, having finally finished growing my damn fang back. I''m never doing that again, by the way. Way too painful for any reasonable snake to do, and I''m the most reasonable noodle to have ever noodled. Finally, the little girl got to work actually killing the fish. Her face had an actually pained look on her face each time of the little fishies died, which made me seriously consider if it was worth my time helping this girl. She''d never survive out in the real world, not even in the relatively peaceful reef. Mercilessness was a must in the ocean, and from what I could gather from clues, probably in this entire world. After all, when you can become godlike through mass murder... Well, psychopaths should be a lot more common here than in my old world. Oh well. At least someone will remember her when she becomes nothing more than food for some random overgrown fish. When she was finally finished with all the fishes, I allowed her a couple of minutes of mental (and physical) rest. I ate up the remains of the fish while she unhappily munched on a little piece of the tuna I''d brought her a couple of days ago. When we were both finished, I slithered over next to her. She allowed me to do so and even rested her head on my side as her eyes took a far-away look. "You did well, dearie. Now, if you can, show me your status." "B-but... Dad said not to share my status..." She said tiredly, eyes on the verge of closing. "Yesss, but I''m sure your dad would approve of my help." I countered. Too tired to argue, she swiped over her status screen over to me. Well, apparently youcan do that. I was only half convinced it''d work. I hissed lightly as I read through her stats. She''d obviously gone down the opposite path to my own, instead choosing to go down the magical support path. Although it may very well not have been her choice, instead her parent''s. Or perhaps that was just how mermaids did it? Who knows. Also, really? Her name is bloody Shelly? What a stupid sounding name. I knew I was better off ignorant. Chapter 25 "But dad always said that magic is superior to physical fighters?" Shelly asked me, a genuinely confused look on her face. Dear God, this girl has a serious case of parent worship. "Dear, your dad isn''t always right. I understand that you want stronger magic, but just as my mother used to say, a strong mind can only come from a strong body." I lectured. She looked at me weirdly, and asked, "Your mom said that?" "No. I made it up. Now shut up and do as I say." I dully responded. This little bitch was hard to deal with when she decided on something. She puffed up her cheeks and looked away. "Fine." She finally relented, dumping half of her points into her constitution and strength, and the rest, however, she felt like. The effects on her were hardly noticeable, but I could still tell that she''d bulked up at least a little. "Good," I said approvingly. "Now, follow me." I brought her over near the exit into the open oceans above. She tried to activate her light spell, but a light swat of my tail stopped her concentration. "None of that. I don''t know how magic works, and I likely never will be able to, but you need a better spell than that. Try focusing your magic on your eyes or something. That''s how I got my own dark vision ability." "Oh..." She said, looking blindly and worriedly around her. Her hand that was holding onto a scale on my body tightened, whether it was in fear or something else, I didn''t know, nor did I care. I''d been driving her to the limit for the past couple days. Of course, what I could do to help her was very limited, but I still brought her free experience every now and then. Furthermore, I was in her cave for only around three or four hours a ''day'', with the rest of my time spent focusing on my own growth. Still, she''d at least grown a bit. Not physically, mind you, but she at least didn''t seem to cry every time she got a scratch anymore. She was more... mature? No, that wouldn''t be the right word. Determined, perhaps. Focused. "So, did you get it?" I asked after around half an hour of waiting. I think I also grew in this week spent on her. Only, my growth wasn''t determined by how bright my light spell was, but by how many meters I gained. Also, I felt as though my patience had been stretched thin so many times now by her incessant nagging and childishness that I might as well have become the new buddha. If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. ... Alright, fine. I wasn''t being fair to her. She''s only nine, and apparently, mermaids take even longer to come to age than humans do. Still, it''s hard not to get frustrated with her sometimes. "N-no. Not yet." She said after a brief silence, sadness in her voice. Oh well, I suppose magic wasn''t all that easy. "Keep trying, then. I''m going to go hunt for an hour or two. Remember to hide where I told you if you feel someone coming and it''s not me." I said, pulling myself up and getting into the heavy waters above. I''d come up with an ingenious solution to the problem of monsters popping up in ''our'' cave. She''d just hide in a small hole and wait for me to come back. Furthermore, she''d know it was me because I had a ''password'' that consisted of three consecutive thumps of my tail, a pause, then two more thumps. I felt like a caveman and considering I''d lived in at least 5 different caves so far, that might be accurate. Still, I suppose this week had been a lot more fun than my dull and repetitive months alone. Still, some time alone would be appreciated. Which was why I was focusing so hard on tracking down the reef yet again. I felt as though I was very close to finding it, too. I''d almost searched every place, and I felt as though I''d be able to find it soon enough. I swam around the area for a couple of hours, sniffing around to try and find something worth swallowing up. Eventually, I found one of the large sea slugs, which at this point, they had honestly become too weak compared to me to put up any meaningful resistance. Hence, it was quickly and tastily shoved into the abyss I call my stomach. Then, as I spent the next few minutes happily digesting my newest meal, I felt it. A smell coming from our cave. Ugh. Hopefully, she remembered. I quickly swam my way back to the cave, having done my best to remember where it was. Two minutes later, I was there. I jumped down and quickly felt the smell coming from further down the cave, to Shelly''s room. I rushed my way over, and when I arrived, I saw a large crab attempting to shove it''s far too big claws into a far too small hole. I didn''t feel anger at the scene, and yet... How else can I describe my actions but with the words ''righteous fury''. I descended upon the crab that dared to try and threaten my cave and try to eat my companion in loneliness. I snatched it from behind and violently threw it against the wall, and before it could right itself, I was upon it once again, coils wrapped around it. It''s shell violently shattered under my coils, and it''s squishy insides suffered more from it''s own shell digging into it than my attack. I was feeling especially merciless, though. So, instead of immediately killing it, I swallowed it up instead. Alive. Only after the deed was done did I stop to consider my own actions, and to remember that a certain mermaid was still there. Watching me. Shit. Chapter 26
"M-Ms. Snake?" Shelly hesitantly asked without telepathy. She''d just crawled out of her hole, and she was visibly trembling. Her whole body was covered in small cuts and scrapes, and the already dirty clothing she''d had since I first saw her was also quite damaged. However, I didn''t have time to bother with her right now. I was confused with myself. I didn''tfeel anger, and yet, how else could I describe what I''d just done but with the words ''mindless rage''? I retreated away from her. I needed time alone to think over my actions, and to make sure I never did such a thing again. I didn''t enjoy that feeling of anger and yet not anger. Now, with hindsight, I could tell that it almost seemed to transform me into a real, mindless monster. I hated it. The only reason I was special, why I survived so far, was because of my mind. Sure, maybe it was a hindrance sometimes, but it brought far more benefits than cons. I didn''t want to lose it and become... Ugh. However, before I could effectively retreat, I suddenly found that I had a tag-along. Shelly had grabbed onto my scales and climbed onto my back as I was retreating, and she was now trying to approach my head. How bothersome. I wanted to click my tongue, but unfortunately, I lacked the correct shape of the mouth to do that. Hence, I settled for hissing out a curse and stopping. I turned my head over onto my back, staring at Shelly, who was now straddling my long back. I allowed her to poke my head and do her thing, and the moment she did, I was the one to initiate the conversation. "I want to be left alone. Get off." Shelly puffed out her cheeks, putting on an offended expression. And yet, she couldn''t hide the sliver of real hurt in her eyes. "I... I just wanted to thank you. I... I don''t know what I would have done without your help..." She admitted, looking away. "You would have been eaten, yes. How sad. Get off." "Why are you being so mean!?" She finally snapped, screaming at me both mentally and physically. I paused for a second at her words. Again, I suppose I was being unfair to her. But then again, I felt as though she was starting to get unfair with me too. "Dear, I''m not trying to be mean. I simply need time alone."You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story. "B-but why!? You just saved me, and now you want to leave me again??" She said, eyes suspiciously wet. "You wouldn''t understand, brat. Now, go practice your magic. I''m close to finding a good place to dump you." I dismissed. I was about to head off, regardless if she wanted to hang onto me when she yet again spoke. "... If you really don''t want me, why did you save me?" Her voice, regardless of it being through telepathy, seemed so small and weak right now. I was forced yet again to stop. Dear God, this girl knows how to guilt trip like no others. "Dear, it''s not that I don''t ''want'' you. You are simply not my responsibility. I''m already doing my best to provide for you for free, and without asking anything in return. However, I will need to return to my own life soon, just as you need to return to yours." "..." She was looking away from me now, but it didn''t hide the tears from her eyes. God damn this girl cries far too much for my liking. "Look, what do you want me to even do? I''m a bloody snake, not your mother. I can''t understand what you want from me!?" I finally snapped. Again, the strange feeling of emotion and yet no real emotion returned. "I... I just want you to stay with me..." She said. "I d-don''t know where my parents are, I can''t even remember most of my life anymore, and I have no idea what to do! And don''t lie to me, I know they''re probably de... dead" At this, she truly broke down into a hysterical fit. Snot and tears and all. Gross. I stayed silent, thinking about her words. I had very little desire to carry around a brat, princess or not regardless. However, what else could I possibly do at this point? Curse my soft heart. I probably should have just eaten her the moment I saw her. "Fine brat, fine. I''ll take care of you, you happy?" I said, trying to calm her down. It didn''t. Hence, I had to wait in her room for a good thirty minutes as her sobs gradually ground down. Finally, when she was finally back in control of her own emotions, I spoke up again. "You good now, dear?" I asked. She looked at me with downcast eyes. "Yeah..." "... Good. Go practice your magic until I return." I ordered. I wasn''t good with kids, but what Iwas good at is being a blunt bitch. "Mkay..." She murmured through our connection but didn''t move away from her bed. I really couldn''t tell what the hell went through this bipolar brat''s mind, to be honest. I cut the connection and left. I never thought I would feel relief when leaving this cave, but on this occasion, some freedom was welcome. I liked the brat, but her forcing me to take care of her left me with a bitter taste. Even when, a couple of hours later, Ifinally found the giant reef wall once more, I still felt damn bitter. ... Damn brat, I sighed inwardly. I''d have to find a way to both grow myself and train her. Ugh. Chapter 27
Shelly uneasily shifted in her bed. Her memories of the times before she awoke in her cave were only becoming more and more unclear. When she''d first woken up, they were quite clear and comprehensible. However, as time passed, they became fuzzy and nonsensical, and she found herself wondering if they were even real. And then, Ms. Snake had gotten angry at her, which was a bit terrifying. Perhaps it was horrible of her to impose herself upon her, but what else could Shelly do? She had no home, little memories, and no survival skills whatsoever. She felt a thump further down the cave, followed by some more rhythmic thumps. Shelly breathed a sigh of relief, happy that she didn''t have to hide for her life again. She didn''t want to repeat that experience. Which was why, this whole time, she''d been practicing her magic nonstop. If she was going to be a liability, she would at least try to make her father proud and not be completely useless. If her father had ever been real, that was. Existential questions aside, she watched with ill-concealed excitement as the titanic form of Ms. Snake popped up. Since Shelly had first met her, Ms. Snake had grown quite a bit bigger, but Shelly couldn''t tell exactly how much, since Ms. Snake had a habit of sitting on her own coils, making it hard to judge her length accurately. Ms. Snake took one look at Shelly with her yellow eyes and then beckoned her over with her head. Shelly hesitantly got up and approached, poking the big snake in the head with her finger. She''d gotten a lot better with the telepathy spell if nothing else. "Dear. It''s time to move out. I found a good place, and I''m starting to get worried. There''s a strange scarcity of prey around here, and it might mean some kind of predator moved in. Not me, mind you. And while I can easily just leave the area, you... can''t." She immediately said the moment the connection was established. Shelly blinked in confusion before nodding slowly. "O-okay. But... How can I get out? You said I''d die if I try to get out..."Love what you''re reading? Discover and support the author on the platform they originally published on. "Indeed. However, I''m conveniently just big enough to do this." Ms. Snake said, and Shelly felt a terrible premonition. Ms. Snake opened her jaws wide, and then, Shelly found a long tongue wrapping around her and bringing her into the giant mouth. "Sit there for a couple of hours while I bring you to a better place. You can breathe water, yes?" A voice said in the panicked mind of Shelly. She could feel Ms. Snake dry and forked tongue gliding near her, and the razor-sharp teeth and fangs all around her made her hold onto said tongue as though her life depended on it. It was creepy, scary, wet, and disgusting, but Shelly had no other choice but to hold on. She could feel Ms. Snake moving along the cave, and even though the huge snake was trying her best, Shelly was still thrown around a bit. Then, they entered what Shelly assumed to be the ocean. The space where Shelly held on seemed to get just a bit smaller, and she could even feel a bit of creaking around her as the water pressure surrounded Ms. Snake. For the next couple hours, Shelly desperately tried not to slip down into the dark abyss below. For as much as she liked Ms. Snake for helping her, she really had no desire to explore her insides. The real problem, however, came when Ms. Snake began to swim directly upward. Then, Shelly had to fight even harder not to slip up and literally fall into her throat and stomach. Furthermore, she even had to be careful not to get prickled by the extremely poisonous fangs Ms. Snake sported. Finally, after what felt like truly forever, Ms. Snake finally stopped. Then, light streamed into the dark cavern that had held Shelly prisoner for so long. Shelly happily swam out, feeling the warm and welcoming water surround her. She breathed in, feeling it drown out her lungs. Thankfully, she had a solution. Activating her race''s ability, she shifted to her aquatic form, her legs gathering together into a tail, and gills appearing along her neck. She stretched out her new limb, along with taking some careful breaths through her new gills. Transforming had always been something she found she could do with little effort, but it was still somewhat problematic since she always needed some time to adapt to either human form or aquatic form after shifting. Ms. Snake was looking at her with her ever-present bored look, but Shelly knew her well enough now to tell she was at least interested. Suddenly, though, Ms. Snake looked away for some reason. Shelly ignored her for the moment and instead chose to go frolicking around the area, getting amazed at all the brightly colored corals and fish. Unbeknownst to her, our cute little murder snake was having an existential crisis. She had always been a fanatical cleanness nazi, and dirtiness or disorganization sent her insane. She wanted to tell the mermaid to take off her clothes since they were in the water now, however... Well... Is there a need to say why exactly that would sound so many levels of wrong? Chapter 28 As I inwardly fought the third world war over clothing, the system seemed to want to contribute to my inner despair, for how else could I describe the message I received? Congratulations! For having rescued the Cursed Princess of Oceania, you have received special rewards! +20% Evolution Progress +10% magic ability(due to lack of magic, the bonus has transformed into +10% aura) + Special evolutions unlocked While I am plenty glad for the evolution thing, I am not so glad that little Shelly is apparently a cursed princess. Welp, nothing to do with me. I hope. After showing Shelly around the safe reef and secretly murdering anything and everything that could possibly even be a slight threat to her health, I told her to get comfortable, for tomorrow she would start living like a real citizen of the sea. Then, I retreated back into the Killzone, happy to see that literally everything in the area around me immediately fled. I suppose the sight of a 40+ meter long snake would do that to them. I checked up on my status. It has been quite some time since I last did, so I was eager to see my progress. [Nameless] [Colossal Serpent (1st Stage)] Age - 0 years Evolution Progress - 85% Mastery - [Serpent''s Dance - 80%], [Devour - 40%], [Extreme Constriction - 100%], [Aura Manipulation - 75%], [Colossus Scales - 100% (skill evolution ready)] I was immediately intrigued by my evolution for colossus scales, so I clicked on it. However, instead of giving me options, the skill chose for me, apparently. Colossus Scales ---> Scales of the Abyss Scales of the Abyss - Scales forged from the pressure of the deep Abyss. Overall resistance greatly increases, becomes immune to any physical pressure. ... Well, I''m not complaining, but a choice or two would have been nice. I already lost the ability to choose my own growth, but isn''t taking away my choice of skill evolution a bit much? Well, whatever. No use crying over spilled milk. Besides, I have much more important things to worry about. I snatched up a couple of small snacks from the Killzone before retreating back into the reef. After a brief search, I found my very first little throne, and with a strange longing for it, I happily settled my now huge body around and over it. The kingdom of Cute and Cuddly MurderSnakes has it''s queen once more. ... Okay, I was originally planning on going back into the deep ocean, or abyss as the system calls it, end eat up some random losers, but I think I''ll just sunbathe today. I missed the sun. This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere. At this point, having my Aura vision activated was more or less a subconscious action, however, I now forced myself to turn it off. I wanted to completely relax at last. When I finally fell asleep, I didn''t dream. However, it was a refreshing and pleasant sleep. The awakening, however, could have been a bit better. I awoke to an annoying mermaid brat poking my cheek, giggling slightly as she swam around me. I opened one eye and stared at her with what I hoped was a chastising look, but I doubt she understood me. "Ms. Snake, look at what I found!" She immediately half-shouted after quickly casting her telepathy, shoving a handful of pretty shells and corals on my face. "... Yes. Very pretty. I''m glad you like this little area." I said after a short pause. She nodded ferociously, a big smile on her face. Well, she''s probably not going to find this place quite as fun in the coming months. "Yeah, it''s amazing! Everything is shiny and pretty, and the little fish around here are really cute!" She said excitedly. Aah, now I almost feel bad for what I''m about to say... Just kidding. I don''t feel emotions. "Yes, very cute. That''s why you''re going to kill them all." I said offhandedly. She stared at me for a second with a confused expression, that then turned into disbelief, then outrage, then finally resignation. "... Yes." She said after a long moment. "You''ve gotten bigger, Ms. Snake..." She said after a bit, her voice now much more subdued than before. "Mhm. I''m close to evolving my stage. I''m quite eager to see what it will do." I commented, looking at my 85% progress. It''s about time, to be honest. After telling Shelly to go do whatever she wanted, I got to work inspecting myself. I''d reached 45 meters in length now, and I could easily swallow an entire bus, far more if I unhinged my jaws. Still... Why stop now? I could become as big as the ocean itself, although that''s just a pipe dream. Although I lost the opportunity to ever practice magic, I still have my aura as a subpar substitute. Although, after observing Shelly do her own spells, I do admit I felt just a sliver of regret. ... Whatever. This is my path, and I will not abandon it. I''m lucky enough as is, being given a second chance in a relatively good environment, I really shouldn''t be complaining. And this was a path I would walk to the end, or die trying. With those words as the basis for my motivation, I took one final look at Shelly to make sure she was fine and headed off to the abyss once more. I wasn''t quite ready to explore the middle area of the ocean, but I was definitely strong enough that anything and everything in my path fled for their lives. Satisfied with having asserted my dominance, I plunged downwards directly. An hour later, I arrived at the bottom. Thanks to my quicker swimming speed and gravity working with me, along with my new scales that made it a breeze to resist the water pressure, the trip was faster than expected. Nonetheless, I got work. Keeping the location of the reef to the back of my mind, I made a long round around a 50km area, seeking out anything worth eating. Eventually, by the time I returned to the reef''s wall, three chocolate slugs and four queer sharks had found their way into my stomach. I swear the genetic makeup of those sharks was ridiculous. One had a head where its ass was supposed to be, for fuck''s sake. How the hell do they even end up like that? It makes no sense. It''s like a 5-year old trying to draw a real-life imitation of cancer. ... Anyways. When, after a two-hour-long swim, I reached the reef once more, I was still unsatisfied with my hunt. Those guys provided very little evolution progress, but I suppose that was normal. Furthermore, I really didn''t feel like risking my life against some of the titans of the middle-waters. How troubling. At least Shelly looked happy enough, dozing in what should bemythrone. You damned pretender. Chapter 29 After properly putting the fake pretender in her place, I was happy to reclaim my throne once and for all. She pouted and complained in her native tongue that I couldn''t understand, but she wasn''t important enough to warrant diverting my attention away from my little bath under the sun. After she realized I was ignoring her, she stormed off, huffing. Secretly, I watched her with interest, quite curious about how the hell that new tail of hers worked. ... How does she even poop now, though? Or piss? Aaaaand not thinking about it. I''m not a pedophile, please don''t arrest me. Actually, how do Ipiss? Oh, right, I don''t. How? No idea. When in doubt, though, blame someone else. So I blamed the system (I originally made a jew/nazi joke, but it doesn''t work here on patron. Sorry for those who got offended!). I idly ran through my status, thinking over my strategy. 3% wasn''t a lot for so much work, but it also was far from little. I suppose I could make a dozen more trips down to the abyss, and by then, I would rank up. That would open up new opportunities, hopefully. I got up from my throne to make a round through the reef. Just to make sure nobody dared to harass my little protegee, I ferociously displayed my aura, causing the weaker creatures of the area to go into cardiac arrest. ... It felt pretty good. While I was far, far from matching that being that passed by me so long ago, I was catching up quite quickly. Anyways, the new king of the reef was found, extracted from his hideout, and eaten. It couldn''t even put up a fight. When I was finally satisfied that my position in this homeland of mine was firmly secured, I spent the next couple hours taking care of little Shelly. Well, ''take care'' might be a bit of an exaggeration. I simply showed her a nice spot to sleep, told her to shut up and stop whining about not having a real home, and then helped her train her spells and kill a couple of weak fish. When I was satisfied that I''d done my duties for her, I dived once more into the abyss. I will not describe my adventures there since there really isn''t much to say about it. I went, I searched, I killed, and I ate. The fights weren''t really life-threatening for me, but nor were they easy, I suppose. I almost got slapped by one of the slug''s wild tentacles, and that would have hurt. Although, with my new scales, I would have still been fine, probably. Still, that slug was quickly and brutally murdered for the offense. The times of desperate fights for scraps of food were more or less over, really. I was big and powerful enough to simply bully my way across the ocean floor, only occasionally having to flee some of the more massive titans, although they seemed to have very little interest in me.Love what you''re reading? Discover and support the author on the platform they originally published on. I ransacked the ocean floor, digging up giant clams and shattering their shells. I plundered the crustaceans who fled or tried to hide, their defenses meaningless before my steel-crushing coils and deadly fangs. I would say I did some other cool stuff, but in reality, I most or less just bullied my way to victory. By the end of this trip, my spoils of war were quite satisfying. If it was up to me, I would have remained down here for at least another week, however, I needed to go check up on a certain mermaid. With great reluctance, I abandoned the now much emptier ocean floor and went over to the great reef wall, which this time, I''d always kept an eye on. Then, I began to swim upwards. I admit, I was a bit spooked. When going downwards, my speed was high enough that I reached the bottom floor fast enough to avoid staying in the middle of the water for too long, hence avoiding the dangerous predators. When going upwards, though, I was slow enough to be in the danger zone for longer. Thankfully, nothing happened, and I reached the reef safely. I took a sniff and found little Shelly''s scent some ways off. And... did I smell blood? God damn it. I leave for two f*king days and this happens? If she got herself killed I''m going to be pissed. Or at least try to be. I quickly made my way over, and to my surprise, found Shelly sitting on top of some corals, a pained look on her face. I could see cuts all over her body, and she had many teeth-like marks on her young body. She was using some sort of magic, as several fishes that looked suspiciously like Killzone inhabitants hovering around her, but not approaching. They were simply circling her, keeping away from her. She had dark bags under her eyes, and she looked on the verge of fainting. Damn it, now I felt bad for throwing her to the wolves. Oh well. She survived, and I''m here now. I shouldn''t need to say that these fishes were nothing but fodder in front of me. I made my way over to shelly, casually snatching up any fish that dared to linger around here. One of those bastards was obviously drunk on blood since it tried to bite me. Bad idea. Shelly looked at me and gave me such a relieved smile that I was honestly a bit taken off guard, and then she fainted. Well, I suppose she was must have been quite tired. I picked her up with my tongue and dragged her off to a safer spot. Why she was this close to the Killzone in the first place, I don''t know. I do, however, remember distinctly warning her about near this area. I dropped her on top of my throne and tried to think of a way to help her heal. However... What could I do? I''m a snake, and furthermore, even if I was human, I''d have little idea how to help her. I can only hope her constitution is high enough. I did feel a sliver of regret at having abandoned her for so long, however, such experiences could only help her in the long run. Other than protecting her occasionally and giving her my thoughts on how to use her stats, there really wasn''t much I could do for her anyway. I stood guard over her injured body for an entire day. Her wounds were indeed slowly closing, but she was also quite pale. The smell of her blood attracted a couple of sharks and other scavengers, however, my furious aura alone was enough to send them fleeing for their lives. Finally, at the dawn of the second day, she woke up. At first, she seemed confused, but then, she shot up, eyes wide and full of fear. I gave her a couple of moments to gather her thoughts before I wordlessly pushed the corpse of some small fishes I''d murdered earlier. She looked at me with an almost betrayed yet thankful look, which was quite confusing, and then proceeded to messily devour the fishies. Well... She must have been hungry. Just what the hell did she do while I was away? Chapter 30 "So... Mind explaining to me just what you did while I was off, dear?" I asked her in a voice as soothing as I could possibly make it after having her establish a connection. Shelly ignored me though, and instead kept idly munching on the large (for her) fish in her hands. It was still unsettling seeing a humanoid devouring something raw so eagerly, but I suppose beggars can''t be choosers. Seeing her reluctance, I inwardly sighed annoyedly. She was being such a brat, honestly. "Look, kiddo. I''m planning on returning down to the deeps tonight, and it might be over a week before I return." She stopped eating immediately and looked up at me, eyes wide and a small trace of panic in her eyes. "Y-you''re leaving again?" "That be so. I''m very close to reaching my second stage, and that should be very helpful." I said off-handedly. And, as I expected, she fell for my bait. "N-no! Please don''t leave me here again!" She cried out, reaching out to grab at one of my scales in an attempt to stop me from leaving... although I wasn''t moving. I tried to roll my eyes, failed, and settled on a deep sigh. "... Shelly, dear." I said in an authoritarian voice, looming over her. "Y-yeah?" She asked, now a bit intimidated. Her eyes were wide, and I could see her trying not to touch the various purplish bruises and cuts spread across her body. "I cannot protect you forever. I promised you I''d help you, and I did. However, I cannot always be with you. I don''t want you to become reliant on my protection." I spoke. Hopefully, my speech skills didn''t match those of my previous life, or it''d be... embarrassing. "I saw your magic while you held off those bast--- fishes. Now, I want you to use that magic on me." I said. "W-what? Why?" She asked, confusion visible on her face. "Because I said so," I answered curtly. I was confident enough in my tough body to know that she couldn''t harm me, but I wanted to ascertain she could kill weaker creatures. She looked hesitant for a moment, but after a fierce stare from my serpentine self, she clumsily did her thing. The water around her began to move weirdly and using my aura manipulation, I could feel a strange power in that water. However, it was faint, and I could barely feel it. Well, something to look into, I suppose. Then, the water around Shelly exploded with a deadly fury. Dozens of thin ''blades'' of pressurized water shot out at lightning speed and impacted my sides. If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. Disappointingly, they failed to leave even a scratch, but I still felt the impact, which was still impressive overall. At this point, only hits strong enough to shatter boulders and easily dent metal could hurt me, and although her attack wasn''t up to that standard, I could see why those fish had chosen to siege her out instead of attacking directly. "... Impressive." I commented honestly. She smiled hesitantly at the comment, looking worriedly at where her attack hit. "Dear, don''t worry. You can''t quite hurt me, but I''m sure that if you train some more, you soon will be. " "..." Shelly looked at me with at first a weirded out expression, and then, that expression turned into one of pure anger. "Why would you want me to hurt you!? I don''t want to hurt you!" She screamed at me. "That''s not the point, dear, and you know it," I said it, instinctively shaking my head in exasperation. "You''re powerful enough to handle anything that doesn''t live in the Killzone. Hence, focus on staying away from that area while you train... Oh, and when I return, I expect the next attack will hurt a lot more." I added. "N-no! Please don''t leave again!" She begged, but that wasn''t negotiable. "I have to, dear." At this point, she looked on the verge of tears, hands clenched hard enough to draw blood. "Why... Why are you so obsessed with training? Dad always said training comes second, and he was the strongest person I knew!" Her dad said that? Well... "Then your dad was a fool. Anyone has the chance to become a god in this world, through sheer effort and mass genocide. I fail to understand how this world''s inhabitants fail to understand tha-... Why am I telling you all of this. You''re too young to understand." I said bitterly. Perhaps I was trying to project myself onto her, but I truly had the best interests for her. Coming from a world where your death was a predetermined fact of life, and arriving in a world after said death with the chance to become a literal god amongst godlike beings... How could I not wish to reach such heights? In my old world, I lived a life of constant work, little pay, no gratification, and very little chance to climb higher the social hierarchy. Now, having been born a fingernail-length noodle snake, I became the overlord of an entire reef, powerful enough to crush ships and terrorize monsters. And this was all done in less than a year, and my lifespan was probably much longer than normal humans. "... I''m sorry." I finally said after a long moment of silence between us. I was being unfair to her again, but I refuse to relent on my insistence on her training. I''d promised her I''d help her out, and I would do so. I was no saint, though, and just like a certain man of steel once did, I would either turn her into a great power, or she would die trying. She didn''t answer, instead choosing to look away. I moved my large head closer to her, and in a pathetic attempt at showing my ''affection'', I rubbed my scaly cheek against her own. She giggled slightly at my clumsiness, taking the action for what it was: An apology, but also a request. For the rest of the day, I hanged out around her, bringing her all over the reef to show her all of its hidden wonders, while also occasionally demanding for her to murder some of its inhabitants, which she did with some hesitation and, depending on the target, quite a bit of trouble. Finally, the sun was setting above, I bid farewell to her, told her not to get herself killed, and headed off into the abyss once more. Just like her, I too would rise to the stars, or die trying. I refuse to accept a middle ground, for haven''t I lived and died a mediocre life already? Chapter 31 At this point, the deep abyss was starting to become my second home. With but a thought, my aura sight was activated, eliminating the need for sunlight. Immediately, I was greeted by the usual emptiness of the area, but I knew it was nothing but a lie. There were a lot of monsters down here, they were simply well hidden and had a larger area to live in than those inhabiting the reef above. And I just so happened to have a very keen nose and a very hungry belly. Like a bloodhound, I sniffed out the most delicious trail out of the thousands around me and began to follow it. Within less than ten minutes, I arrived at where the smell was strongest. There was nothing above the floor, but then again, that just meant my new meal was a bit of a coward. I hang around the area for a couple minutes, trying to get any meaningful info on my prey. When it failed to do anything except keep hiding, I got impatient and pounced. Although my body shape wasn''t great for digging, I could easily use my head as a shovel, even if it was a bit dangerous. I didn''t need though, since as I was just about to hit the floor, the beast hiding under it exploded outwards. A 50-meter long bobbit worm exploded outwards with a ferocious screech. I wasn''t impressed though, since although it was big, it''s aura was weaker than mine by quite a bit. Instead of stopping my attack, I redirected it at the worm''s core. My jaws snapped shut around it, fangs sinking deep as my other teeth tried to split it in half, but failing. The worm retaliated by biting my own body... or at least trying to. My serpentine coils danced around it''s jaws before wrapping around it''s body, and my constriction skill activated. Disgusting squishing sounds sounded out dully from the worm as it''s ferocious screechs turned into pitiful whimpers, right until it''s body was snapped in half. I uncoiled myself from it and unlatched my teeth, then ignored it''s head and instead began to work on swallowing the tail part. It died pretty quickly after that, and it''s remains were happily swallowed up by the hungry noodle that is me. After waiting a couple minutes to let my body handle the digestion, I checked my status, finding my evolution progress to only have gone up by 0.4%. Still, that was enough. I immediately began to sniff out another trail, and once I reached the end of it, I slaughtered the monster there and devoured it. This process repeated itself constantly for the next couple days. In total, I murdered and devoured at least 50 beasts, each one of them at least half my own size. I was also careful to not get lost from the reef, constantly making sure I knew where the reef wall was. After all, although I''d be happy enough to leave that place behind, I couldn''t bring myself to abandon the little mermaid all on her own. I didn''t particularly care for her, and yet I did. It was a confusing mess, my cold and uncaring serpentine instincts clashing against my remaining human feelings. I guess that is why it has been so confusing for me. Nonetheless, I had little time to care for such paultry things such as feelings when I wasso damn close to evolving. I was at 99.99% evolution. I merely needed one last meal, and then I would rank up, and oh boy was I looking forward to it.This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there. Having just finished yet another meal, a relatively small but extremely quick frogfish, I immediately began yet another treck towards my final target for this hunting session. I''d shot up to around 60 meters in length at this point, and I was large enough to swallow entire boats in one gulp, or more accurately, swallow most ''small'' monsters. It was starting to get a bit problematic, though. Being so big made it hard to hide and fight smaller things than me, but it was still overall a big benefit. Anyways, after a half hour search, I finally reached my new target. A house-sized tuna... which fled immediately upon seeing me. This wasn''t an uncommon accourance, and unfortunately for the tuna, I was no speed slouch. I shot after it, chasing it. After two entire hours of this damned chase, I was finally able to latch my teeth onto the tuna when it slowed down a bit from tiredness. It was basically over at that point, even as the tuna tried to turn and bite me back. Although being a snake meant I lacked having arms, it was still a much more convenient form for battle than, say, being tuna-shaped. I easily twisted my larger and flexible body away from it''s mouth, my coils wrapping around it. It shouldn''t even be said that the tuna died a pathetic death the moment my coils were tightly secured around it. I swallowed up it''s corpse, and when I did, the much-awaited notification finally came. Congratulations! You have fought and slaughtered your way to a higher stage of being. Your brutality and voraciousness is unrivaled, but while you are feared by most, you are also loved by a Cursed being. For this achievment, Special Evolution mode has been unlocked. Transfering into S.E. mode... Transfer succesful. Time stopped until Evolution is finished. The world around me suddenly faded away, and I found myself surrounded by a world of darkness. I couldn''t feel my body, nor could I feel the ever-present water caressing me. Then, a titanic snake appeared in the darkness, perfectly visible despite the lack of light. Reading through the system''s notification, I was momentarily stunned. However, I understood that this was a very special opportunity. Hence, I pushed away any and all emotions, opting to instead focus on what was important. I could view my body from any angle, and in a corner of my mind, I had a strange but undeniably real ''feeling'' of what I needed to do to change myself. I had limited resources with which to upgrade my body, but they were still quite a lot. Before I upgraded myself, though, I took the opportunity to satisfy the scientist within me, and inspected my serpentine body from the inside out, quite literally. I looked at every organ inside me, every teeth, every scale. I understood very little over how this seemingly random mess of parts made up my body, but it was still a fun experience. Then, I got to work doing the actual upgrading. After thinking over it for quite a long time, I first and foremost changed the layout of my teeth. From two extremely dangerous fangs and lots of smaller teeth, I made all of them the same size, and all of them possessing my venom. Then, I upgraded both my eyes and nose by quite a bit. I wanted to add to my eyes the ability to see heat, but after feeling out the cost, I abandoned that idea. Instead, I spent a large chunk of my points increasing my size all the way to a nice and round 100 meters. I changed my color scheme too, making myself a dark blue all around, with some splashes of black here and there to make it less uniform. Since it was so cheap to change colors, it barely hit drained any resources. With that done, I paused a bit to debate over what else to upgrade. In general, all I really needed was more size, strength, defense, and aura. Everything else was alright as it was, and it wouldn''t be worth changing. Hence, I threw half of my remaining points into increasing my aura. The moment I did, there were no real changes, but I could tell that when I entered this new and improved body, the aura would be a great help overall. Happy enough with that aura level, I threw the remaining points into my scales, making them stronger yet lighter. Satisfied, I backed off to observe the finished result. Overall, I was very satisfied. Looming over the world at 100 meters in length, I looked like an imposing overlord of the seas. Still... This was only the first rank-up. I still had a long ways to go. As if reading my mind and knowing I was satisfied, the serpent faded away, and my consciousness dissipated. I had little time to be suprised at this, but I did have time to worry if I fucked up. I hadn''t left my body in the most defensible position, after all. Chapter 32 Waking up from my rank-up was... strange. I twisted my body, finding myself once more within a cocoon of sorts. However, unlike my first time breaking out of my egg, where I had to fight desperately to escape, a slight twitch of my tail was enough to shatter this new prison of mine. I emerged from the cocoon, feeling as though I''d been reborn. I passed my tongue over my new and improved teeth, feeling their sharpness and strength. My senses had all been improved, as was immediately obvious from the thousands of new smells that entered my nose. Although it was still too dark to see, I could still tell my eyes had also improved. Ignoring those wonderful changes, the biggest change had obviously come with my new size. I twisted my body around, inspecting myself for a couple of minutes as some small monsters who''d been hanging around my cocoon quickly scattered across the ocean floor. I was a bit angry at the system for forcing me to evolve without providing me with a safe spot... but then again, perhaps the system had protected me? Who knows. I certainly don''t. I quickly checked my status, finding it quite satisfactory. [Nameless] [Colossal Serpent (2nd Stage)] Age - 1 year Evolution Progress - 0% Mastery - [Serpent''s Dance - 100%], [Devour - 100%], [Extreme Constriction - 100%], [Aura Manipulation - 100% (Skill Evolution Ready)], [Scales of the Abyss - 40%] Alright, what the hell? they werenot this high before I evolved. Did my rank up also give me skill experience? But how does that make any sense? I can immediately tell using these skills feels easier, especially Serpent''s Dance. I won''t complain about this, but it still feels as weird as hell. I clicked on the aura skill, feeling as though I should be giddy about this, even though I really wasn''t. Aura Control - Increases overall control of Aura by a large amount, several hidden aura tricks will be unlocked. Giant''s Aura - Aura will be able to be used as an offensive tool. Power depends on the individual''s power and soul. Aura of the Titan Serpent - Aura can be used to enhance certain aspects, control will increase by some amount, can be used to paralyze stronger targets momentarily or outright kill much weaker beings. Alright, the last one was obviously made for me. Why did the system even bother offering the other two if it already knew what I was going to choose? It''s literally worded after my race. I mentally poked the last option, and although I didn''t feel any physical changes... My mind felt weird. It''s hard to explain without feeling what I went through. The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. I made my way back to the reef while contemplating my evolution. On my way back, I casually tried out my new aura on a small crab (that was still the size of at least a small truck). The poor little thing froze, and even when I directly took it into my mouth, it didn''t move. It tasted... fine, I suppose. My improved senses did not improve my sense of taste, unfortunately. I didn''t feel it was necessary back during my self-evolution, but looking back, it might have been a good idea. Whatever. I was now swimming considerably faster than before, hence, reaching the reef took quite a bit less than the previous times, and the climb upwards also took a considerable less amount of time. Upon reaching my new birthplace, I was greeted by... nobody, as every living being living both at the Killzone and the edge had fled for their lives when they saw even just my outline. The reef had already felt small beforehand, but now, it felt suffocating. I had to basically skirt along near the water''s surface in order not to accidentally smash into the various corals and rocks jutting up. I sniffed the water and soon found little Shelly''s trail, and like the good little dog I was, I followed it. Soon enough, I''d reached the origin of the scent. Shelly was fighting a pretty intense battle against a fairly small and weak-looking octopus. Still, it was only comparatively small, and it was still far bigger than anything in my old world. Still, the thing was quite quick. It waved around Shelly''s water blades and constantly tried to corner her, but Shelly kept managing to evade entrapment. Normally, I would have let little Shelly have her fun, however, judging from the faint grimace on her face and the tired look in her eyes, this might be a battle a bit too close for my liking. Why is that every time Shelly looks to be in trouble, I unexpectedly show up just at the right time? Does it have something to do with the whole ''cursed'' thing? Hell if I know. Well, I''m just saying that out of curiosity.I don''t mind playing the white knight. My new and improved aura erupted out from my body, and immediately, all sounds in the reef ceased. Everything stilled, with even the waves having seemingly paused. Naturally, Shelly was spared from this, as were many little harmless things. I could easily kill half the population of this reef in an instant with just my aura alone, but what would that do? No, I wasn''t a mass murderer. I was a hunter. There''s a difference. I casually slithered my way over to Shelly, who finally deigned herself to look in my direction, her previously confused eyes widening in shock, and then happiness. She yelled out something that I could only assume was my name in her language. I tilted my head slightly at her before presenting said head to her eager hands, who quickly did her thing and activated the telepathy spell. "Ms. Snake! You''re huge now!" Shelly immediately said, voice filled with shock. "Yes, yes. Very big. By the way, do that poor little octopus a favor and end it." "O-oh..." Shelly said, deflating a bit. As to why she did though, I have no idea. She swam over to the octopus, and with two quick water blades, chopped off its head. A brutal show, but one quite common in this ocean filled with freaks and monsters. As a professional marine biologist, I can confidently claim this place makes about as much sense as a certain U.S president does. As she returned back to my side, I''d already smashed a place in between the corals for myself, and I''d curled my body within this space. Overall, I looked like a mountain compared to the little mermaid next to me. Suddenly, Shelly launched herself at my head and then hugged it. "I missed you." She murmured through our connection. ... Moody brat. Killing one thing one moment and then acting all cute and cuddly. It''s giving me whiplash. "I missed you too, brat," I said back, causing her face to light up as she gave me a large smile. Well, she isn''t abad kiddo, I suppose. Chapter 33 "Dear, you''re a very smart girl. I''m sure you knew the risks, and besides, why would I be angry at you for doing something I do every day?" I said. Shelly looked away from me, face bright red in shame. I was slowly swimming along the reef, with Shelly following beside me. Normally, even though Shelly was no pushover, she wouldn''t dare be out in the open like this. However, with me here, even if the sky fell, she''d be fine. "Y-yeah, but still... I shouldn''t have fought it..." She murmured. Silly girl, when there''s a battle to be fought, you either win it or you flee. She still had the advantage against that octopus, and she probably would have won even if I didn''t show up. "Enough. The past is the past." I tried to finish the conversation, only for Shelly to blurt out the same words she''d said at least 4 times already. "Y-you''re really not angry at me?" "I will be if you keep asking if I am. Now, be a good little mermaid and show me your progress." I said with an exasperated mental sigh. Even though I was still stuck in a body that felt no emotions, somehow, this girl was driving me crazy. "Okay!" She said enthusiastically. I stopped swimming and faced her, unblinking eyes staring at the cursed princess. She too stopped swimming and closed her eyes, and through my aura sight, I could see her preparing her spell. I will still insist that magic is really cool, but being 100+ meters long is cooler, and it''s totally not my jealousy speaking when I say that my beautiful, huge body is far superior to some meager water blades. Shelly''s eyes were shut close as she concentrated on her attack. After a couple of moments, she let out a yell as four lightning-quick ''blades'' of pressurized water materialized around her and charged at me. Even if I wanted to, at this distance, I wouldn''t be able to evade it with my large and cumbersome body. However, I hardly needed to, as the blades harmlessly struck my scales, not even managing to make me feel anything other than some mild amusement. Shelly''s face fell and she pouted at the sight. I would have laughed at the sight, as she looked like a puppy having been denied her treat. Except, you know... I''m not one for fake laughs. "Shelly, you improved massively. If it was before my evolution, that attack might have hurt." I consoled her as I swam over to her, my massive body surrounding her. "Yeah, I guess..." She murmured, making her way over to my head and grabbing onto the back of it. "You''re mean, Ms. Snake. I worked so hard, and you don''t even praise me..." She whined through our connection. You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story. "I literally just complimented you, dear. Stop spouting bul-... nonsense. Now, do tell me how you''ve been during my absence." I retorted, causing the little bipolar princess to light up and immediately begin to rant about her days. Either she''d missed me quite a lot, or she was just a natural talker. Probably both, considering she didn''t shut up until the sun was coming down, only stopping for a brief lunch pause. Her eyes had a drowsy look to them as she had stopped talking through our link now, and began to murmur stuff in her own language. She was lazily draped over my body, and soon enough, her eyes closed and she fell asleep. I stared at her for a while, pondering just what to do with her. I couldn''t leave her now, not after letting her rely on me so much. However, what else could I do? My food intake wasn''t actually that large. Just a ton of flesh would be enough to sustain me for at least a couple months, years even if I didn''t move a lot. However, that didn''t mean I''d be happy with so little food and so little progress. I couldn''t stay in the reef to do that, and I couldn''t bring her with me... An idea popped up into my mind. I pondered it for the entire night as I let little Shelly sleep, liking the idea more and more. When Shelly finally woke up, gently stirring from her dreams with a smile on her face, I immediately tried giving her my head. She was still a bit drowsy with sleep though, so it took a while for her to realize I wanted to talk. "Good morning, dear. Had a good sleep?" I asked. She nodded happily, staring up at my eyes that were bigger than her entire body, and then some. "Yeah, it was great!" "I''m glad. I wanted to ask, can you use that telepathy spell of yours to connect two beings that aren''t yourself? Like, say, connecting me to another mermaid while you cast it?" Shelly tilted her head slightly, looking at me with confused eyes. "I think so? Why? Are there other mermaids around here?!" She finished, excitedly looking around with wide eyes. "Nope. I was just... asking. Now, how about we go look at those pretty rocks?" I diverted her questions, and like the gullible little mermaid she was, she fell for it. I spent the next couple of days both playing and supervising Shelly''s training. I can''t really do much else other than give her a safe environment in which to murder cute little fishies, but that alone was enough for me. Her level had already jumped up to 20,which, according to her memories, was the level of an elite soldier back in her country. In short, it wasn''t great, but it was enough. She was, however, desperately lacking in magic theory, which she claimed she''d been learning from her mother before they did the whole shebang and vanished. And so it was that, on the eve of the fourth day after my return and evolution, I told Shelly of my plans. "Dear. We''re leaving the reef." I told her after she''d woken up and eaten. Her head whipped up, staring at me with her oh so wide eyes. "W-what? Why? I like it here!" "Don''t worry, dear. We''re going to an even prettier place, but the journey might take some time. Hence, I want you to pack everything up. Trust me, you''re going to love it." ''maybe'', I secretly thought. "Alright..." She pouted, heading off to collect whatever it was she wanted. It''s good she doesn''t know my plans, or I doubt she''d be willing to go along with them.
