《Landlord》 Prologue -a nameless mountain- Disturbing sounds of a boy echoed throughout the mountain, a boy who is trying to repel the cold by rubbing two sticks together. Whole afternoon past like that and hope was diminished. "At least I bring a couple of spare clothes, wearing them might keep me warm tonight." Mused while throwing the sticks in anger. Hilarious sight for an experienced camper, only cover he prepared was tent made of leaves and some semi-straight sticks. "Bringing a lighter is no good, I have principles" repeated furiously. It was him that decide to survive without the help of civilization, but ideals slowly dissolved into the cold night. Surviving is the priority not the hate towards humans. It was his hate that brought him to this damned mountain but he won''t let it control him any more than that. Yes, he was a hater, hated all loved none. Leaving the love aside was probably the worst idea he had ever. He couldn''t even understand the concept after all this hateful period. Unsocial, unloveable, arrogant was the best description. Above all he thought himself "The best", there is no one like him. Family was family and others were lowly peasants who know nothing. He continued like this till he started to meet with some people. People like him, geniuses of their family, their town. It was the time that he enrolled in a private high school. Every one of them was unique. Colourful personalities, different hobbies, different friends. He was starting to like the idea of befriending others. With the luck he has, the government closed the school. Some said "corrupt school administration" while others"corrupt government". Which was unimportant to Liam. He just wanted a friend, but he couldn''t get one while wanted. He was devastated, nothing felt good after that. Depression followed him to the university. He didn''t want to enter but he had no choice. Money meant survival and job was the source of it. in the second year of the university, he was done. "Being a teacher, why! I don''t like humans let alone little humans. Why would I want to become someone who has to teach little humans." He kept talking without thinking uttering every profanity he could. He just wanted to leave. Because he was about to drop the school he had a fight with his mother and she couldn''t stop her child. How could she, he was suffering in front of her eyes. Always at home, but not even once he did come to her room to talk with her willingly. He shut himself into his room, her room was next to his but she barely has seen her boy. She just let him go, but with one condition "You have to inform me of your whereabouts ". Which was resolved after deciding on a real estate they had bought but never used. It was on the outskirts of the city. With that, he just left home with a backpack and some rations. Chapter 1. Fugitive It¡¯s been one year since he had left home and many rabbits. Yes, his only fun become dissecting rabbits since he successfully made a functioning bow and some arrows, wonky but still does the job. It might sound creepy, but he did to survive even though he didn''t like meat. Today was no different he was busy with his only fun, butchering a rabbit. Thanks to this habit of his he learned how to dry meat and so far he never had an issue with food. While he was thinking how he should cut the pieces, a loud noise made him drop the chunk of meat he was about to cut. The source of the noise was a little higher place on the mountain close to the summit. He didn''t even have time to whine about the meat, just washed the blood off his hands with the little water left in the water bucket he bring this morning and take the bow and two arrows he had then started to ran towards the source. Area wasn¡¯t far from the dwelling just 10 minutes of jogging brought him near a big creator, presumably the source of the noise. He expected to find a crashed plane or meteorite. What he found was an egg-shaped black chunk of metal. It had cracks all over it. He considered looking closer but after thinking about how dangerous it can be, he just gave up. He was curious but he did not want to die for it. Just as he was leaving he stopped. No one spoke but someone needed help. He just knows that he needs to help but why, how did he know there was someone inside. It was horrifying. Someone is inside of his brain not talking but somehow telling you to help her, yes it was woman whatever it was he can tell. When he intended to run before going mad, a message appeared in his mind ¡°Please, help me. I am stuck and can''t move¡± He panicked more and frantically shouted, ¡°Whatever she is she is speaking in my mind, oh great who are you? And why are you invading my mind? If you keep doing whatever you are doing I am leaving¡± ¡°Wait, I don''t know your language¡± ¡°Then how are you spe- damn it you are doing it again. That''s it I am leaving now¡± ¡°Please don''t, we are not speaking¡± ¡°What''s that supposed to mean? You ARE talking in my mind and I am not liking that at all.¡± ¡°It means I am sending my intent to your mind and receiving your intent from your mind. You don''t know how to communicate so I am doing instead of you. That''s why you are feeling violated. Its normal and I am sorry but I had no choice. We might look like you humans but our whole planet completely evolved and we are not humans anymore.¡± ¡°I don''t want to evolve if that means I lose my humanity.¡± ¡°To survive you don''t have a choice. In case you are lucky you will become a slave but I assume you won''t like to live your life at the whims of another. They will use this planet to farm mana and it won''t be pleasant. You will work till you nearly die and they won''t let you die. It will continue till you die eitheryou die cause of age or too much stress.¡± ¡°I won''t become a slave to another race. I didn''t let my race and I won''t let any other either, but how am I supposed to get you out of that thing? If it''s still standing after that fall I don''t think I can cut it open.¡± ¡°I will help you you just need to ¡­¡­¡± After rescuing her, he carried her down the path towards the dwelling on his back. It did take a half hour to get them to the dwelling. After putting her on the rabbit fur and tending her wound she can already sit and looking better when she was inside the ship. ¡®inhumane powers I guess¡¯ ¡°Yes you are right, my regeneration ability did become incomparable faster after I evolved but I am intelligence type evolver. This much is nothing I saw a warrior to grow his lower half after some rest.¡± ¡°Huh growing back half of your body back? How did he survive in the first place?¡± ¡°His group had a healer. Healer just stopped the bleeding, it was enough for him to survive¡± ¡°Are you immortal? ¡°No silly, I''m still a human-based race. I evolved but I am still human-like, as you see. Every human will die unless they become something more.¡± ¡°But it is possible, I mean immortality.¡± ¡°Yes and no. You can evolve to a point that you don''t have to eat drink and sleep, you would just need mana to supply to your system. But you are not immune to death, after face tanking a supernova you won''t survive and keep living. But you would live as long as you have mana in your core to keep you going.¡± ¡°So how do I evolve?¡± ¡°I will help you but would you let me sleep first I am really tired after that accident. We can start tomorrow, we will need some materials from the ship. But I have to ask first are you the owner of this land you are living?¡± ¡°What do you mean, we do own this land it is my families property, arent you already reading my mind why ask?¡± ¡°I can but to some extent. I cant completely scan your mind, even though you are not evolved and cant use your brain to its full potential your subconsciousness is filled with junk that you stored it and never check it after stored. First Evolver of Earth -In a Cave on the nameless mountain- It wasn''t comfortable to sleep on rabbit furs, his hand-made bed might not be the best bed there is, but it was better than sleeping on rabbit fur. He put the girl on his bed yesterday to tend his wounds, but he didn''t expect her to sleep there, and if he could, she would be the one sleeping on the rabbit fur. ''I would probably make her bed today, ? don''t want to sleep on the floor tonight.'' "I will help with the bed, and sorry I didn''t mean to make you sleep on the floor." But If you were to be prepared at least a little bit they would surely have a hard time to blemish this planet they might even be defeated if you could become strong enough. Yes, I could not be able to stop them until now but would you just surrender if I were to say every planet I have been until now in their hands. It is a core that you can use externally until you create your own. Having a core is essential to use mana. It produce and store mana. The core I will give you is my ship''s core. It isn''t for personal use but a little bit tweak and it will be yours. Let''s head there and take it. If not maintained, a core might malfunction and release its mana outside and we don''t want that.¡± ¡°why?¡± ¡°Because, if mana becomes sufficient enough it will cause uncontrolled monsters to spawn. At first some weak monsters, but with time they will evolve into dangerous fearsome monsters¡± ¡°Okay then let''s go. We can eat later.¡± Liam put his bow on his back and take the two arrows he has, and they left the dwelling to head towards the area where the wrecked ship is. It didn''t take a long time to get there because of the yesterdays stroll but there was a problem. Little one but a problem nonetheless, It was a loathing creature with octopus-like shape. While they get close it squirmed more and more ¡°Woah, what''s that thing?¡± ¡°An unintelligent mana based creature. It is weak, but a mana based creature anyway. I will handle it.¡± ¡°But I have a bow, can''t I just shoot it down?¡± ¡°You can but what if it gets close to you? Can you crush it with your hands or poke it to death? If no, then let me handle it.¡± After she finished her words, she ran toward the creature and squashed it in her hands. It was a horrifying sight to behold. Whatever juice it had, it wasn''t there anymore. ¡°Yes I know its gruesome Liam, but do you have another idea that won''t injure you or me. I don''t have a weapon so I had to do it in a vile way.¡± ¡°Ah, whatever, let''s get what we are here for and leave. I don''t want to see it all day long.¡± ¡°It is behind the seat. When you direct your mana to it, gun stores a little bit of your mana and when you will it to shoot, it forms the mana into little pellets and propels it the direction you hold. If you don''t hold it properly or your strength is not enough, it might break your wrist. So I suggest you to wait a little bit until you raise your strength.¡± ¡°Understood. The material of the ship will be enough to cover the cave. After that you can use the mana land produces to enlarge your territory. But the land must be unclaimed or consent of the owner of the land is necessary.¡± ¡°Okay, then let''s carry the materials to the cave.¡± With a makeshift sledge, they started to move the salvageable goods to the cave. You cant use mana for now but you can at least channel it. Just focus on your core and think about releasing your mana, but into the mechanism we made. It will make you claim the land and produce its core. ?t will be a little bigger than the core you have right now, about the size of your fist. It won''t produce a lot of mana but we will compensate it with other types of energy. We can convert them to mana using the core you will produce.¡± ¡°Here I go.¡± Liam tried to focus on the core and claim the land but somehow mechanism won''t let him. I will make my bed.¡± After Liam leaving the gun near the bed, he took some rations for the travel and then left the cave. Chapter 3. Back to home -Side of a road- Liam walked for a while in silence. No pondering on the food he should eat today or complaints about how bad the rabbit meat taste. It wasn¡¯t his intention to stay silent, he was shocked. Amusingly hesitant about the human-looking alien girl, but still he didn¡¯t know or want to know what is happening or why is he heading home right now. He just walked. It was possible to take the bus but he decided not to, not concisely but because of habit. It was his habit to walk when he is upset or lost. He would walk till he couldn¡¯t anymore. This day was one of those days. He was walking, but just walking. After two hours of walk, he just stopped and sit under the tree near the road. There weren¡¯t any cars using the road, so it was silent. He whispered, ¡°What did she said again? ¡®Aliens coming, and they will enslave us.¡¯ Uh! I don¡¯t want to believe her. I don¡¯t, but she is somehow invading my brain and she is doing that to just to speak to me. I don¡¯t know if she can alter my brain but don¡¯t want to know anyway. Ship, don¡¯t forget the ship. Creepily black surfaced and small ship. There this thing too, what is this thing anyway? Oddly heavy and transparent ball. Is that enough to explain it? No. it¡¯s just weird, just like everything that¡¯s happening a couple of days. I can feel it that it¡¯s on my chest. I know that it¡¯s there I can feel it like it is a living being and I don¡¯t know how I am feeling that. Am I going crazy? I feel like I am. What, is alien invasion real? I don¡¯t know, it¡¯s more likely I am going crazy.¡± While he is rambling on, he ate a little bit of rabbit jerky and take a sip from his canteen. After 15 minutes of rest, he quietly continued walking. The rest of the trip was eventless. ¡°Hmm, now what? What am I supposed to do? Save the earth, no I am not an altruist. I don¡¯t believe one bit of it. There are always reasons and probably a goal in mind. So if I were to say ¡®I want to save my family¡¯ is this hypocrisy. NO, a big NO. Like always, he rang the bell two times consequently. After a while door opened. ¡°Mom¡± Her mother hugged immediately Liam after seeing him. ¡°Sorry I couldn¡¯t come to see you, is everything okay? After rolling on the bed a couple of times, feeling the softness of the bed he realized there was a blanket on him. He was a little bit sweaty but nothing he can¡¯t handle. When he felt he was hungry, he opened his bag. When he was about to eat the jerky he remembered he was at his home and he doesn¡¯t have to eat the hard rabbit meat. When he was heading towards the kitchen he heard some sizzling. His mother was frying an egg and there were two bread in the toaster. ¡®It would be nice to have some egg in the mornings. Maybe I should buy a chicken¡¯ ¡°Egg will be ready in a minute. Now, did something happen yesterday? She was in a wrecked chunk of metal when I saved her. Of course, I wouldn¡¯t believe her if there wasn¡¯t something to prove herself and I want you to come because of her mental state.¡± ¡°So she is mentally impaired.¡± ¡°Yes, no she isn¡¯t crazy. But she is in a bad condition and I didn¡¯t know what to do. There is this thing too, don¡¯t freak out when you meet her the way she speaks is kind of freaky and when I met her I thought I was going crazy.¡± ¡°How so?¡± ¡°She speaks to your mind, and I don¡¯t know how to explain this too. This couple of days too surreal for me to stay sane.¡± His eyes become watery. ¡®Oh no, he is about to cry.¡¯ ¡°Don¡¯t rush it, I am here all day. After the crash you should have seen her, I thought she will die for sure even if I were to call someone to come. So I just did a first aid, after the bleeding stopped she just sit after a while. She was about to die mom; she was half dead on the bed but she didn¡¯t. ¡° ¡°Are you sure she was about to die? Maybe you just panicked.¡± ¡°No mom I know what I saw and her wounds weren¡¯t normal. There was a hole on her left side of her abdomen and the blood was flowing profusely. Just the amount of blood she lost along the way I carried her should have killed her. While she was wounded she wasn¡¯t even worried, she kept talking about the ones that will come and I shouldn¡¯t be scared of her but the ones that will come. She said they will kill humans and enslave humans and- ¡° Emma hugged her son. They stayed like that till Liam calmed down. ¡°Don¡¯t worry she didn¡¯t harm you that¡¯s all that matter. I don¡¯t know how to judge what you said but I can come with you and speak to her, or we can call the police.¡± ¡°Mom I don¡¯t know if everything she said is true but I know that not all of it nonsense. Just the wreck I found her in is good enough proof.¡± ¡°Okay, you were talking about land ownership.¡± ¡°I know what you mean, but she didn¡¯t want the land to be hers. She said it is beneficial for her, but I can use it to get stronger. Ah, there is this thing too look at this.¡± He revealed the core on his neck. ¡°What¡¯s that?¡± she asked, confused. ¡°This is the thing she gave me after I saved her. Just touch it you will understand.¡± She slowly stretched out his hand to touch the core, but the moment she touched it she backed her hand away. ¡°What was that? Some high tech display? It said something about core.¡± ¡°Yes, this thing is a core. She said it was to start the evolution.¡± ¡°Evolution?¡± ¡°I don¡¯t know either mom. Liam stared at the ¡®thing¡¯. He couldn¡¯t process what he is looking at for a while. After he realized it is the core that showing him this thing, he started to muse. ¡°I do want to buy a book and the rest of it is the things I wanted to do, but why did it appear now?¡± He did indeed contemplate about the things he needed to do and these were the ones he prioritized but, ¡°What about the chicken. I did indeed think this morning, it would be great to have one, but how this core thing decides what is important, what is not? And why did it appear now? Oh is it because I was thinking about what to do?¡± ¡°More importantly, how do I close this?¡± The moment he thought about closing, it disappeared. ¡°So mental command it is.¡± He played with it for a while. At first, he opened the list only after ten seconds of concentration. With repetition, duration come down to two seconds. To forget it books would do wonders for him, so he checked his clothes on the mirror and left the house. With that done he left the house once more. Nearest library to their house was one hour on foot, so he just used the bus. He loved walking, but books took priority when he compared the two. It took him twelve minutes to arrive at the library. Building was an old one, with the faded paint on the outer walls, wooden entrance and polished marble floor. Liam walked inside slowly while looking at the bookshelves curiously. There was a desk on the far left side of the entrance after passing the security guard. She didn¡¯t question him or asked him to show his library card or anything, but he didn¡¯t have the card to show her anyways. He needed a library card though or whatever It requires him to borrow a couple of books. Behind the desk, another woman was sitting. She looked tired even though it was just past afternoon. ¡°Hi, I would like to use the library, but I don¡¯t have a library card.¡± ¡°If you are going to read inside the library, you don¡¯t need one; but if you want to borrow the book, hmm I guess we can arrange one in five minutes. Don¡¯t worry its free, and you can keep the book up to two weeks.¡± ¡°Uh, I don¡¯t exactly live in the city so it¡¯s a little bit hard for me to visit here often. Is there any way to barrow the book longer?¡± ¡°On our website, you can prolong the duration for two more weeks, if you wish to.¡± ¡°Thank you.¡± After he finished asking questions, librarian prepared his card while he stood in front of the desk doing nothing. After it''s done he took the card and wander around the shelves. There wasn¡¯t any specific book on his mind, so he sat between the shelves and picked a book randomly. It was 8.30 pm when he decided to get up and leave. He picked two novel and one on history. On the way back he decided to walk. It will take some time but he was okay with it. While he was reading everything was perfect, he didn¡¯t have to think. But like now, when you stop reading problems will flood your mind. Just like alcohol. ¡°My brain, it hurts. She wasn¡¯t stressed because of what her son said, she was stressed because he was sad when he returned home. Today he was looking worse and that was the reason why she was worried. After Liam calmed down, his mother left the room for preparing a meal. He didn¡¯t start to feel good all of a sudden, he was a little bit drowsy and the headache was still there. ¡°Uh, why is this headache so strong.
