《Bellrose Records: Skulls and Roses》 Welcome to the Jungle A pale-skinned girl stood in front of her dresser, staring into a mirror. She wore a frown on her face as her hands stroked her auburn hair. Her blood amber eyes vanished behind her eyelids as an ear-piercing shriek rang through her mind. Images of vibrant red hair on a girl strapped to a chair flooded her mind. An older man in a white lab coat faced the girl, covering her face. He lifted his arm and in his hand was a large syringe filled with obsidian-colored liquid. The girl¡¯s muffled screams ripped through the air around her. Pain shot through her head and her hands covered her ears as she dropped to her knees. ¡°Kas! You ready? We¡¯re gonna be late!¡± a familiar female voice called from outside the room, snapping her back to sanity. ¡°Yeah, I¡¯m coming.¡± Kas answered, getting back to her feet. She opened the door to find a tall raven-haired beauty standing in front of her. ¡°What¡¯s eatin¡¯ you? It¡¯s our first day. You should be excited, mate!¡± She asked. ¡°Izzy¡ I can¡¯t go. I look like shit.¡± Kas replied as her eyes darted down to the floor. ¡°I mean, me hair is all wrong, me skin is pale as fuck. I don¡¯t even know if I can handle other people right now¡¡± ¡°We went over this already. You are still a bombshell, even better than before. You don¡¯t gotta be worried.¡± Izzy explained. A smile found its way on to Kas¡¯ face as she stared back into Izzy¡¯s incredible cobalt eyes. ¡°You¡¯re right, as usual. Alright, let¡¯s go.¡± She said as Izzy walked down the hall and she followed quickly behind. Kas picked up her keys from the coffee table as they stepped into the living room and walked out the front door. Izzy followed her down the concrete steps of the porch, leading onto the sidewalk. Kas reached into the pocket of her black hoodie and clicked the garage button on the remote attached to her keychain. As the white metal door rose up, it revealed a shiny black Suzuki GSXR resting all by itself. The garage was spotless and there wasn¡¯t a speck of dust anywhere on or around the bike¡¯s incredible paint job. ¡°Ah fuck me. I forgot to cover Rosie last night.¡± Kas complained as she stepped into the small room. She ran her fingers along the skull painted on the front of the motorcycle. Her hands caressed the roses surrounding the eggshell-white of the bone. ¡°Not a speck of dust though, fuckin¡¯ right!¡± She cheered as she sat on the seat. ¡°You obsess over this crotch rocket too damn much but I will admit, she is gorgeous.¡± Izzy replied as she sat on the back, behind her friend. ¡°Damn right she is. Now listen to her hum as she vibrates between our legs.¡± She answered as a wide grin curled onto her face. Kas shoved the key into the ignition and turned. The motor purred to life and Izzy placed her feet on the back pegs. She reached forward and hugged Kas around the waist. Kas kicked her foot back, hitting the kickstand. She pulled back on the throttle and sped out of the garage. Her tires skidded to a stop just before they hit the pavement and Kas clicked her remote, closing the door before she left. The tires screeched as they sped onto the road. Kas darted down the street as Izzy held on tight. After about a mile of following the road, she saw it come to an end. The large white barrier at end of the road shimmered with bright yellow reflectors. She stopped her bike at the side of the road and pulled out her phone. Izzy sat back, releasing her waist. ¡°You get us lost or something?¡± Izzy demanded. Kas ignored her as she tapped her phone screen repeatedly. ¡°This where they told us to go. Something seems off.¡± She replied. A moment later a matte black Dodge Neon cruised by. It was going fairly slow and Kas noticed a small black symbol on the rear license plate. ¡°They are a Hunter. See the plate?¡± Kas asked. Izzy stared with her as the car rolled forward and disappeared into thin air as the air rippled like water. ¡°Well that¡¯s not something ya see every day, now is it?¡± She asked as her eyes darted to Kas. ¡°I think we need to follow them. I have the new plates they sent me. Maybe there¡¯s a trick we¡¯re missing or something.¡± Kas answered as she turned the throttle downward, accelerating the bike. She rolled forward and quickly did the same as the car before her. They rippled through a cloaking device and stopped on the other side. Where the dead-end cross-guard once rested, a large round opening leading underground showed itself. Kas drove inside and followed the light indicators. They led her into a massive underground parking garage. She found an open spot near the black car from earlier. With her head held forward, a young man stepped out of the car and eyed her as she drove by. ¡°Damn, nice bike!¡± He said but Kas didn¡¯t even look up. She quickly raised her hand and flipped him the bird, as she pulled in a few parking spots down. ¡°What the hell? Are you daft, mate?¡± Izzy demanded as she hopped off the back. ¡°What are you on about? All I did was flip off some asshole for hitting on me. Why are you up in a fuss?¡± Kas answered as she placed her hand on her hip. ¡°Did you really not see who that is? Take a better look.¡± She insisted. Kas shrugged and peeked around the car next to them. Her eyes widened as she took in the sight of his golden hair and his calm face. He turned his head and stared back at her, a smile appearing on his face. ¡°Jack¡ Jacko¡. Is that you?¡± She said as she quickly stepped around the car and wrapped her arms around him. ¡°Oh wow¡ Kassie? I didn¡¯t exactly expect to see you here today. How long has it been, 2 years?¡± He asked as he pulled her in tighter. She took a deep breath and sighed in relief. He even smelled the same, Old Spice and river breeze. She squeezed harder for a moment before releasing him and pulling back. The grin on her face grew wider and wider, the longer she stared at him. ¡°What did you catch this morning? I can smell the river on ya.¡± Kas asked. ¡°Did a little noodling. You know how it goes. Stick your hand in a hole, wait for it to get bit, then pull really hard. It¡¯s pretty exhilarating.¡± He explained as his grin began to grow as well. ¡°Did you forget about lit¡¯le ole me?¡± Izzy asked as she stepped around Kas and reached out her hand. ¡°Who are you again?¡± He asked as he scratched his head. ¡°Jackson Fisher, you better not be playing me right now!¡± She shouted as both hands ended up on her hips. ¡°I¡¯ve missed you too, Bella. Been a while.¡± Jackson answered as he grasped her hand and pulled her in for a real hug. ¡°I¡¯m glad to see you two are doing well.¡± Izzy pulled away from him and placed her hands back on her hips. You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version. ¡°You know I hate that name¡ Except when you say it.¡± She replied, flashing a seductive wink at him. ¡°Hey now, hop off the man¡¯s lap, Jizzabella.¡± Kas teased as she elbowed her friend in the ribs. ¡°Listen here fellas. You can put your rulers away. No need to have a measuring contest right now.¡± Jackson said as he chuckled at the two girls. ¡°We¡¯d both beat you in that respect.¡± Izzy retorted. ¡°I think you both know that¡¯s not true.¡± He replied as he winked at both of them. ¡°Alright, alright. Enough of that, mate. We¡¯re running late as is. We should get goin¡¯.¡± Kas said, turning around as she walked for the elevator door at the end of the parking lot. When the doors slide open, all three of them stepped inside. Jackson reached forward and pushed the B15 button. A moment later the small room descended down the elevator shaft. ¡°Floor fifteen, eh?¡± Kas asked. Her eyes shifted over to him, scanning over his rough, fuzzy jawline. ¡°Yeah, that¡¯s where most of the morning classes are. What are you two taking?¡± ¡°We¡¯re takin¡¯ Werewolf 101.¡± Izzy answered. ¡°That should be werewolf biology, if I remember right.¡± ¡°Yeah, the teacher is Rennyn Thorne¡ fuckin¡¯ asshole.¡± Kas replied, muttering to herself. ¡°Well you aren¡¯t wrong about that. The dude is definitely an asshole, but how do you know him?¡± Jackson asked as he glanced at Kas. ¡°He is the reason I¡¯m in the hunter program.¡± ¡°Oh, I guess none of us become hunters by choice, but it is our choice whether or not we stay.¡± ¡°It¡¯s too late for me. I¡¯ll just be huntin¡¯ mutts from now on.¡± Kas replied. The elevator doors slid opened and all three of them stepped out. ¡°Well, we better get going. We¡¯re all probably late at this point. Later, Jackson.¡± Izzy said as she pulled Kas¡¯ arm. ¡°Yeah, you¡¯re right but one last thing.¡± He answered and Kas stopped in place as she turned to face him. ¡°Meet me at lunch in the quad outside the gym. I¡¯ll introduce you to some people. My lunch break ends at 1:30.¡± ¡°Sure thing. I¡¯ll meet you there. I think my lunch starts at 1:00 anyways.¡± Kas replied as she turned and followed Izzy down the hall. Kas and Izzy walked down the corridor until they found the room for their class. Kas stepped inside first and saw the tall blonde teacher as he stopped his lecture. His head cocked to the side in irritation as he glared at the two of them. ¡°Take a seat you two. I won¡¯t repeat what I¡¯ve already covered. You need to read over the first ten pages from one of the text book on the table. But listen well because I¡¯m going to continue from where I left off now.¡± He explained as he faced forward and began to speak once again. They picked up a text book from the table mentioned and both found a seat near the back of the room. Kas flipped open the book and took a moment to catch up. She skimmed through the first few pages as Izzy quickly took down notes. After a few minutes Kas had read over the ten pages and then some as she found the spot Rennyn currently lectured about. Most of it was nonsense because of the fact that she had been educated about most of this previously. For her, this just a bunch of formalities. Regardless of all this, she absorbed ever word, retaining as much information as possible. Her attention dulled as the two-hour class dragged on ever so slowly toward its finale. Rennyn¡¯s lesson seemed to go on for ages. He spat out words that seemed to blur together as time went on. Finally, the end of the class approached as the clock¡¯s hands read 10:26 AM. Rennyn sat down at his desk as he finished his lecture. He scanned the room of students but stopped when his eyes made contact with Kas and a wicked smirk appeared on his face. ¡°You may all go when the bell rings. Those that were late will have to figure out what they missed on their own. Good luck.¡± He announced and his eyes never lost contact with Kas. A shiver went down her spine as he continued his dark glare. Most of the other students never looked up from their desks as they studied. Kas looked away from him but felt his aura of nasty all the way across the room. Her eyes closed for a moment as she tried to collect herself and disappeared into her own mind as she tried to forget about his horrible eyes. Her attention snapped to her left as she felt a hand on her shoulder. ¡°It¡¯s alright, Kas. He can¡¯t do anything here. We just gotta get through the next couple minutes and we are outa here, Mate.¡± Izzy whispered. She did her best to comfort her friend, but she knew it was never simple. ¡°I¡¯m good, Iz. No need.¡± Kas replied as she turned her head slightly in Izzy¡¯s direction. The moment the bell rang Kas stood up and shoved her book into the black leather satchel she had placed next to the table. She tossed the strap over her shoulder and zoomed out of the classroom. Izzy barely kept up with her as she stormed through the halls. Kas powered through a set of double doors that led into her next class. Izzy peeked into the room and Kas nodded at her. She closed the door and left down the hall, heading to the next class. Kas stared at the class of student in front of her. The intimidation she felt was real, even with all of them chatting in their groups before class started. Same as the previous class, she found a spot at the back of the room and waited. It didn¡¯t take long before a very skinny, petite woman walked into the room. She wore a tight, form fitting, hooded sweatshirt and skin tight black pants. Something similar to Kas¡¯ own hunter attire. She lowered her hood and revealed her flawless, jet-black hair. Kas¡¯ attention shifted to the women¡¯s eyes. Her left eye was a normal brown-hazel shade, but the right was a little more surprising. There was a large scar over it, as if she had taken a serious wound in battle. Both her iris and pupil were consumed with a radioactive, blue glow. Kas became mesmerized by the intense stare of the teacher. ¡°I am Matriarch Serenity Van Helsing. I will be your teacher for this class. Just know this class won¡¯t be easy but if you survive to the end... I promise you will have learned something. So, be prepared.¡± Serenity explained as her serious, grim expression stuck to her pretty face. ¡°Did she just say Matriarch?¡± Kas whispered to herself. ¡°What the fuck is going on here? I thought this was going to be one of the normal classes.¡± Serenity quickly pulled a stack of index cards from her pocket and scanned the room of students. She pointed at five different people and directed them to come up to the front of the class. An index card was given to each of them as the teacher stepped in front of them. ¡°The first exercise will be an Improv scene. I¡¯ve given each of them the bare minimum info required for the scene and they will make up the rest. This will help me to see where each of your skill levels are and that will help me to determine the best course of action for the class.¡± She explained as each of the students behind her looked at their cards and prepared. Kas chuckled as the first wave of students failed miserably at the exercise. Three groups later the class bell rang, and her excitement began to build. She left the room and marched straight over to the cafeteria. Instead of a normal lunch room setting, the cafeteria was filled with vending machines. Lines of people stood in front of various machines as they paid for and received their food all in a matter of moments. She approached one of the burger machines and quickly ordered some food. Kas swiped her card and a few seconds later a brown paper bag dropped down. She quickly snatched the bag and left the room. Just outside of the cafeteria was the hall leading to the quad. As she approached the glass double doors, Kas saw Jackson standing at the opposite end. Her lips curled and a smile appeared on her face. ¡°That¡¯s not something ya see every day.¡± Izzy said. Kas snapped her head to the left as she saw her friend approaching. ¡°Oi, what are you taking about?¡± Kas snapped as her smile quickly shifted into a scowl. ¡°That smile. I¡¯m not sure I¡¯ve seen you smile like that before.¡± She teased. ¡°Yeah well¡ I better get going.¡± ¡°You do that. Have fun, Kas.¡± Izzy replied with a smile. Kas pushed open the doors in front of her and Jackson turned his head, making eye contact with her. He waved his arm and she waved back, stepping out into the quad. ¡°Miss Bellrose, can you please come with me?¡± Rennyn called out from behind her. His voice stopped her dead in her tracks. ¡°No, I have plans for lunch today.¡± She answered, refusing to turn around and face him. ¡°You plan to spend time with that boy over there, don¡¯t you? Well those plans are canceled. We have something to discuss, now let¡¯s go.¡± He ordered as his voice became more stern. Shivers ran down her spine at the thought of what he asked from her. She sighed a deep breath and turned around, displaying a wide fake grin across her face. ¡°Alright, lets go.¡± She answered, stepping back through the double doors. Getting Away With Murder Her right palm rested on her abdomen as she stumbled down the hall, bracing herself on the wall with her left. With each step, her legs struggled to keep her standing and before long her knees buckled. She slammed into the ground on all fours as she braced her fall, but she was unable to find the strength pick herself back up. Instead she turned and sat against the wall of the corridor. Tears began to trickle down her face as she sat there silently. Kas held her own body, favoring the wounds to her torso. She lifted up her shirt and stared at the scattered black and blue marks across her flesh. The pale white of her skin only amplified the dark contrast of the bruises. Her entire body throbbed with each heartbeat as it thumped in her ears. The beats of her heart became almost deafening as the pace steadily increased. Her hands shot up to her ears as she cupped over them. She lowered her head to her knees and began to sob quietly to herself. She heard no signs of life around her as each sob echoed through the long, empty hallway. She sat against the wall for an unknown amount of time before she finally felt he strength to stand once again. Kas leaned forward and planted one palm on the linoleum floor, the other hand found support against the wall. She pushed herself up and forced herself to stand as he knees shook under her own weight. As she struggled to find her bearings, her attention was brought to the loud ping of the phone in her pocket. Her legs straightened as she found the strength. She reached into her pocket and checked her phone, seeing a text from Izzy on the screen. [From Izzy ¨C Where the fuck are ya?! Combat class is nearly half over!] Kas sighed as she stared at the message but quickly put her thumbs to the screen as she began to type a reply. [To Izzy ¨C I¡¯m on my way. I had to meet Rennyn and talk about some shit. Give me like 10 mins] [From Izzy ¨C Sure thing. Better hurry though. Your Jacko is teaching us today!] She immediately closed the screen on her phone and shoved it back into her pocket. Seeing Jacko¡¯s name gave her renewed stability in her legs and she quickly marched toward the elevator. She stepped inside and pushed the floor 15 button. Her knees buckled slightly as the small compartment began to move upward. It didn¡¯t take long for her to go up five floors, so the doors opened up and she stepped out into the familiar, much safer hallway. Her hand to hand combat training class was in the gym, so she quickly turned to the left and began to jog. A smile found her face as she pushed open the double metal doors and stepped inside. She quickly found Izzy near the back of the class and stood next to her as she faced Jackson while he spared with another student. The student had bright white hair on top his head but seemed to have cut the sides and back of his head super short, but the top remained somewhat longer. ¡°Who¡¯s that?¡± Kas asked. Her eyes never left the sparring match as she studied each of their movements. ¡°His name is Warren Snow. Kinda cute if you as me.¡± Izzy answered. ¡°He is holding his own against Jacko. Not bad.¡± She replied. ¡°Yeah but you can tell Jackson is holding back, can¡¯t you?¡± ¡°Obviously, but even so. This snowflake is doing well.¡± ¡°True but its matter of time before Jackson puts him on his ass. He just wants ta see how good we are before he really gets ta teachin¡¯, ya know?¡± Izzy explained as she turned to face her friend. ¡°Makes sense. Jacko must be pretty good if he is a teacher. I thought he was still a student.¡± Kas replied as she continued to marvel of him. ¡°He sure is something else, Mate.¡± ¡°You still like him, doncha?¡± ¡°What are you talkin about, Iz?¡± ¡°Why are ya tryin¡¯ to deny it. You never fell out of love with the guy. It¡¯s super obvious.¡± Izzy answered as she nudged Kas¡¯ in the ribs. She flinched in pain as a grunt slipped from her mouth. ¡°Whatever, Iz. Why are you on me about it anyways?¡± Kas snapped back. ¡°Are you okay?¡± ¡°Yeah, I¡¯m great. Like always. Why?¡± ¡°You ain¡¯t the type ta flinch, Mate.¡± Izzy replied as she stared at her with a raised brow. ¡°Look, I¡¯m good. You worry too much, alright.¡± Kas insisted as she faced forward once again. ¡°Fine, fine. I¡¯ll let it go. We should be paying attention anyways.¡± She said as she turned her gaze back to the sparing match. A moment later Jackson slammed Warren to the mat and twisted his arm, holding him in place. ¡°Alright Warren. I think we¡¯re done here. Do you yield?¡± Jackson asked as he held Warren¡¯s arm and held his boot against his neck. ¡°Hell no!¡± The white-hair man shouted. ¡°Look, I like your spunk, but I can break your arm at any time. So, can you please just yield? I like to make a habit of not injuring my students.¡± Jackson replied, twisting the man¡¯s arm a bit more. Kas stared on but her gaze focused in on Warren¡¯s face. She watched a smirk appeared but shook her head when she realized what he planned. ¡°Not gonna work, kid.¡± She muttered quietly as she shook her head. ¡°Huh? You say somethin¡¯, Kas?¡± Izzy asked as she turned toward her. ¡°Yeah, this kid¡¯s about to get owned. Just watch.¡± She answered, keeping her gaze locked on the two of them. Warren jerked and twisted around in an attempt to sweep Jackson from his feet but missed. Jackson jumped over his leg and planted his knee into Warren¡¯s chest, raising his fist. ¡°Are you done now?¡± He asked. Warren quickly nodded his head as he raised his hands up in surrender. Jackson stood up and reached his hand down toward him. Warren hesitated for a moment but grabbed his hand and Jackson pulled him to his feet. ¡°You surprised me, Warren. You have an incredible mind for strategy.¡± He said as he turned to face the rest of the class. ¡°I hope you were all watching closely. That match was not just for me or him, but for all of you as well. You could all learn a thing or two from him.¡± He continued, turning back to Warren. ¡°But¡. You are weak when it comes to actual physical attacks. You can chip away at your opponent, but you never land a deciding blow.¡± Warren¡¯s face grew crimson as he stormed back into the group of students. The red of his face began to reflect onto his impossibly white hair as it turned light pink.Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation. ¡°Looks like he ain¡¯t a snowflake anymore. Lookin¡¯ more like a flamingo now.¡± Kas whispered as she leaned over to Izzy. Her hand shot up and covered her mouth as she held back her laughter. Kas snickered as she watched Jackson. ¡°Alright, Dak. Come on up.¡± He ordered and a guy with short, light-brown hair stepped out from the crowd. He was tall but next to Jackson, less so. The two of them stood in front of each other and got into fighting stances, raising their fists. Jackson nodded his head at the student, signaling the start. Kas watched as they circled around each other for a moment. ¡°Are sparin¡¯ or dancin¡¯?¡± She shouted as she cupped her hands around her mouth. Jackson snapped his head toward her and met her eyes. She blushed and dropped her eyes to the floor. ¡°Hey, Kassie. I didn¡¯t see you come in.¡± Jackson replied but Dak took the chance to attack and threw a punch. Much to Dak¡¯s surprise, his fist was caught in Jackson¡¯s palm. ¡°Awe, c¡¯mon Dak. I thought Sr. taught you better than this.¡± He taunted as he slowly turned his gaze back to his opponent. Dak¡¯s face turned bright red as he yanked back hand. ¡°Oooo, looks like a nerve was stuck.¡± Kas teased as Dak glared at her. ¡°What, you want some? Bring it, Dako.¡± ¡°Oh my god! That name is perfect!¡± A girl yelled from across the group. Kas turned toward her and saw bright, neon-blue hair surrounding piercing red eyes. ¡°Thanks, Pixiedust. I do my best.¡± ¡°Pixiedust, eh? Honestly that¡¯s not far from the truth, Red.¡± The girl replied as she raised her hand, blowing a kiss to Kas. A torrent of tiny sparks and shiny bit flew toward her and crashed into her face. Kas closed her eyes and wiped her eyes. ¡°What the fuck was that¡± she whispered but quickly realized there was nothing on her face. She looked back at her and the blue haired girl gave her a sly wink before she looked away. Kas raised her eyebrow but a loud thud snapped her attention back to Jackson¡¯s sparing match. ¡°Wow, that was over quick!¡± The blue haired girl shouted as Jackson stood over Dako. ¡°Ha! That¡¯s what she said!¡± Kas shouted in reply. ¡°Oh, so you do have a personality under all that.¡± ¡°Whatever lets you sleep at night, Pixiedust.¡± Kas snapped back. ¡°Alright, Dak. You¡¯re done here.¡± Jackson said as he reached down, lifting him to his feet. ¡°God damnit! I almost had you.¡± He replied. ¡°Dak, c¡¯mon man. You never had me. You couldn¡¯t even keep it together when Kassie started mouthing off. But that¡¯s what this class is for.¡± Jackson explained. ¡°Speaking of Kassie¡¡± He continued as he turned toward her. ¡°Why don¡¯t you come up here next.¡± Kas took a deep breath and let out a hard sigh, but steeled her nerves as she stepped forward. She raised her fists and staggered her stance as she stood in front of him. Her fist clenched tighter as she struggled to stand strong. ¡°Your stance isn¡¯t bad. Alright let¡¯s see what you got.¡± He said as he raised his hands, readying his stance. Kas remained silent as she threw three solid punches, but he dodged each one. Her body ached but she pushed through the pain. Her movements became slow and clumsy as she continued to attack. She couldn¡¯t help it, but her knees began to shake as she struggled to keep herself vertical. ¡°Alright, that¡¯s enough. Everybody, twenty laps around the gym.¡± Jackson ordered as he looked over the rest of the class. He grabbed Kas¡¯ hand as she went to follow everybody. ¡°Not you. We need to talk.¡± ¡°Why? I¡¯m fine.¡± She replied as she tried to yank her hand free, but Jackson¡¯s grip felt like vice. ¡°No, you aren¡¯t. You could barely stand.¡± ¡°I can stand just fine. What¡¯s it to you?¡± ¡°Kassie, I saw your knees buckling and I hadn¡¯t even touched you yet.¡± ¡°Yeah, so what? Maybe I¡¯m just nervous.¡± She replied and tried to pull her hand free again but failed. ¡°For fuck sake, would ya let me go?¡± ¡°No, not until we talk.¡± ¡°There is nothing to talk about. Let it go.¡± She demands. ¡°No. I won¡¯t let it go, not until we talk about this.¡± ¡°Oh, my fuck. You are really stubborn, you know that? Fine. We can talk.¡± ¡°Good. Now sit.¡± He ordered as he released her hand and point to the bleacher seats on the wall. ¡°So, what the fuck is sooo damn important that ya gotta stop the class?¡± Kas asked as she flung her arms in the air sarcastically, but Jackson caught one of her wrists and pulled down her sleeve. Her forearm was covered in several dark, black and blue marks, as well as a few cuts and scrapes. ¡°This. This right here is what is so important. What is this?¡± He demanded. ¡°I bet its not the only place, is it?¡± He asked as he grabbed her other wrist and revealed more of the same. He quickly reached for the bottom of her shirt and yanked it up part-way. ¡°Kassie, where did all this come from?¡± He asked, but she pushed him away and stood up from the bench seat. ¡°What the fuck are you doing?! Don¡¯t touch me!¡± Kas shouted and her voiced echoed around the gym. ¡°Kassie, I¡¯m just checking out the bruises.¡± ¡°For fuck sake, just leave me alone!¡± She growled at him, quickly turning around as she stormed out the double metal doors. She took three steps and stumbled, dropping to one knee. Her hand planted on the ground, struggling to keep herself from collapsing to the hard floor. Her breath became strained and her eyelids grew heavy. ¡°What is taking him so long? Fuck¡¡± She muttered. The metal hinge of the door clicked, and the tap of footsteps echoed behind her. ¡°Finally, ¡®bout time. You gonna help me up, or what?¡± She asked. ¡°I thought you didn¡¯t want me to touch you.¡± Jackson answered. ¡°Just get over here and help me up!¡± She demanded and he chuckled, lifting her to her feet. ¡°Alright, up you go.¡± He replied as he scooped her into his arms. She squirmed and struggle to get free, but his grip on her tightened. ¡°What are you doing? I can walk.¡± ¡°Weren¡¯t you just on the ground a moment ago? Better get comfy, Kassie, ¡®cause I¡¯m carrying you to the infirmary.¡± ¡°Fuck, alright.¡± She answered as she stopped struggling, resting her head on his chest. Her eyes slipped shut and a moment later everything faded to black. A loud click echoed but there was total and utter darkness. Kas¡¯ breath became heavy and rapid. The black sack hood that she grew to dread blinded her from all light. A slap to the top of her head made her jump but when the pressure of it disappeared, the hood went along with it. A grey haired, balding, old man in a white lab coat stood in front of her with a wicked grin. She panned her head around, scanning the pure darkness around them. She looked up and flinched away from the intensity of the bright spotlight above her. Kas looked back to the man in front of her and her heart pounded like a jackhammer in her chest. ¡°Bellrose, Kasula. Ahhh, the one Mr. Thorne said was kissed by fire. Are you ready for your treatment today?¡± He asked but she remained tight-lipped and silent. ¡°Staying strong and silent, huh? I admire that, but it won¡¯t change anything.¡± He continued as he reached for the small leather bag on the table next to him. ¡°Fuck you, Dr. Asshole!¡± She growled as she hocked a massive wad of spit onto his face. He remained unmoved as he sighed and reached into his pocket. He pulled out a white handkerchief an wiped his face. ¡°I see why Mr. Thorne keeps you around. You have some real inner fire. It¡¯s one reason why you are so compatible. The others lacked the same resiliency that you possess. He did good acquiring you.¡± He explained, putting the cloth away and retrieving a massive syringe from the bag. He placed it on the table and pulled out a strange clear vial filled with a black fluid resembling liquid obsidian. ¡°Today is the Werewolf Serum. Good luck.¡± He said. He lifted the needle and filled it with the contents of the vial. Kas tensed her muscles as she tried to force her way free of the restraints but to no avail. He placed his hand onto her arm, holding it in place as he shoved the needle in and emptied the shiny black liquid into her. Immediately her arm began to spasm and her veins budged at the injection site, slowing working its way up. Writing On the Walls The silence of the room shattered as violent shrieks vibrated the room. Kas thrashed in her bed as her eyes darted every direction at once. Crimson veins bulged from the whites of her eyes as tears poured down her face. A pair of powerful arms wrapped around her as Jackson embraced her with a firm grasp. Pure adrenaline and fear powered her as she desperately fought him with all her might. Charlotte watched frozen in horror as Jackson struggled with Kas. He reached forward and firmly grasped Charlotte under her chin, forcing her to stare at him. ¡°Charlotte, look at me. Look only at me, focus on the sound of my voice.¡± Jackson said firmly but somehow still remained calm. The glazed look in her eyes faded and she focused onto his warm chocolate iris¡¯. ¡°Are you with me now?¡± He asked as he released her face and she nodded quickly. ¡°Okay, I need you to focus and do what we¡¯ve practiced.¡± ¡°I¡ I don¡¯t know if I can.¡± She said, doubting herself. ¡°Charlotte,¡± He replied, flashing a gentle smile. ¡°I know you can do this.¡± She was filled with a rich sense of renewed confidence as she closed her eyes and Jackson quickly returned his full attention back to a thrashing Kas. Her screams shifted into grunts and frantic breathing. Charlotte¡¯s lips began to move as if she spoke words, but instead a barely audible hum resonated from her mouth. The power in the hum, vibrated the air around the bed. Her mouth stopped and her eyes opened, revealing glowing, blood-red eyes. The curtain burst open and the Doctor stepped through, but Kas¡¯ wild thrashing slowed to a stop. Charlotte¡¯s breath stopped for a moment as Kas laid back and the red of her eyes dimmed back to her normal crimson shade. Kas turned her head to the side and saw Jackson at her side. He held a firm grasp on her hand as she blinked at him, regaining her focus. ¡°Jack¡. Jacko¡ Is that you?¡± She asked as she quickly sat up and wrapped her arms around him. ¡°Oh wow¡ Kassie,¡± He answered as he returned her embrace. ¡°Feelin¡¯ better now?¡± He smiled as she nodded her head against his chest. ¡°Yeah, I¡¯m good. What happened? Me head ain¡¯t so clear right now.¡± Kas asked as she shook her head. ¡°You are in the infirmary, everything is fine. Just relax.¡± He replied as he laid Kas back down. He looked over to Charlotte and smiled. ¡°You did good. I knew you had it in ya.¡± Her pale white face turned light pink, highlighting her already bright blue hair. ¡°Thanks¡ but I don¡¯t even know what I did,¡± she replied. Her eyes darted to the floor as she fell back into her chair. The doctor stepped around the bed and held Kas¡¯ hand. Kas jerked her hand away and glared at the women wearing a white lab coat. ¡°You seem to be responding well. Your eyes are alert but show signs of fear,¡± she said as she flashed a small light in front of Kas¡¯ eyes. ¡°Who¡¯s the doc?¡± Kas asked as she stared. ¡°I am Dr. Newton. How are you feeling, Miss Bellrose?¡± ¡°Oy, I¡¯m alright. When can I get outa here?¡± ¡°I¡¯ll tell you what¡ You can leave when your insides don¡¯t look like they lost a fight with a chainsaw.¡± Dr. Newton answered. ¡°How long will that take? I got shit to do, mate.¡± Kas demanded, shuffling uncomfortably in the bed. ¡°Well maybe you should ask Miss Gold. Your wounds can¡¯t be healed by normal means.¡± ¡°Can I speak with you alone, Dr. Newton?¡± Jackson asked as he stood up from his chair. ¡°You are responsible for her correct, Mr. Fisher?¡± Dr. Newton asked, turning to face him. ¡°Yes, that¡¯s right. I am her teacher.¡± ¡°Ah good. Come this way.¡± She said, walking out of the curtains and Jackson followed her. Kas leaned her head toward Charlotte, whose head hung down as she stared at the old leather book in her lap. ¡°Well¡¡± Kas said. ¡°What?¡± She answered. ¡°The doc said I need to talk to you about getting out of here.¡± ¡°What am I supposed to do?¡± ¡°How the hell should I know? You are the one with the spell book, ain¡¯t ya? Chop chop.¡± Charlotte looked back up at Kas and opened up that book on her lap. She glanced down at it but then right back up to Kas. Her eyes close and she places her hand on Kas¡¯ arm. Kas flinched but allowed her to do so. Charlotte began to whisper something barely audible. ¡°Enlighten me on the truths. Show me what¡¯s hidden from the naked eye. Shine down on the darkness of my mind and show me the light!¡± she chanted but released Kas¡¯ arm a moment later and opened her eyes. ¡°What the hell was that, Pixiedust?¡± Kas asked but Charlotte frowned and looked away from her. ¡°Spit it out. What¡¯s wrong, mate?¡± ¡°This is going to take time, Kas. The doctor¡¯s not wrong. You are pretty messed up inside.¡± She explained. ¡°So, what can we do about it now? I just want to get outa here.¡± ¡°The most I can do is some minor treatments, but you need loads of rest.¡± Charlotte said but sighed. Jackson stepped back through the curtain and stared at Kas. ¡°Well you are going home today¡ and probably for the next couple months.¡± He explained.Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on the original website. ¡°What, why? I can finish up me classes for today just fine.¡± Kas grumbled. ¡°Because you shouldn¡¯t have even been here today. Where are your keys. I¡¯m taking you home.¡± Jackson ordered. Kas glared at him for a moment. ¡°You¡¯re tellin¡¯ me, you know how to ride?¡± She asked, raising her eyebrow at him. He smiled and shook his head. ¡°No, but Izzy does. I¡¯m taking you home in my car.¡± He said, reaching his hand forward. She crossed her arms and shook her head. ¡°Jacko, No.¡± Kas answered. ¡°Not Izzy. Hell no!¡± ¡°Kassie. C¡¯mon, either Izzy brings her home after classes, or we leave her here until I can bring her home to you. Could be days.¡± He explained. Kas sighed and rolled her eyes as she reached into her pocket, pulling out a key ring with several keys attached. She found a small key with a black grip and removed it from the ring, placing it in Jackson¡¯s hand. ¡°Just tell her something for me.¡± She requested as she held his hand in place. Jackson raised an eyebrow. ¡°Yeah?¡± He replied. ¡°Not a scratch. Not one.¡± He smirked and shook his head, jerking his hand free. ¡°Sure thing,¡± He answered but chuckled as he looked back to her. ¡°Somethings never change.¡± Her glare pierced him as he turn to face Charlotte. ¡°Yeah? So, what does that mean?¡± She asked. ¡°Hey, Char. Deliver this key to Isabela Davies, along with the message, please?¡± He asked as he handed her the key. Charlotte nodded at him and stood up. She quickly put the key into her pocket and stuffed her massive tome into her bag, before she left through the curtain. Jackson turned back to Kas and smiled. ¡°Never change alright. Now let me help you out of bed.¡± He said as quickly removed her restraints. Kas pulled herself from the hospital bed and struggled to stand. Her knees shook but she steadied herself and stood straight up next to him. He lifted he arm toward her and she grabbed his shoulder. As they stepped through the curtain Jackson scooped her up into his arms. She gasped in surprised but squirmed around. ¡°What are you doing?¡± She asked. ¡°I was going to get a wheelchair, but this is a lot easier.¡± He answered. ¡°I can walk fine, Jacko. Put me down.¡± ¡°No, you can¡¯t walk. That¡¯s the problem. Do you remember how you got to the infirmary in the first place? Just relax would ya?¡± He explained as he carried her through the doors and down the hallway. It wasn¡¯t long before Jackson found the elevator and made his way up to the parking garage on the top level of the facility. Kas lies comfortable in his arms, nearly falling asleep on the way up, but she snapped awake as he placed her on her feet near his car. She looked up at his smile as he opened the door of his car. She looked back, a couple of parking spaces over and frowned as she saw her bike. ¡°I swear Jacko¡ If Izzy hurts Rosy¡.¡± She muttered. ¡°Rosy will be fine, Kassie. Just get in.¡± He answered as he walked around the car, getting in on the driver side. Kas shook a little as she leaned into the car. Jackson¡¯s small black dodge neon vibrated and hummed as he turned the ignition. Kas pulled the door closed and he pulled out of the spot. He drove to the exit and two large metal doors opened from side to side. He pulled forward and completely exited the facility. A moment later he drove through the stealth field and Kas smiled as she stared at the strange ripple effect. Kas straightened up and sat forward in her seat, glancing over at Jackson as he stared forward. His rugged jawline led up to his straight, dirty blonde hair. She found herself dazed and confused as her eyes scanned face. Yep, definitely the same ole Jacko. ¡°Enjoying the view?¡± He asked without turning his head. She shook her head once she realized she was staring. ¡°Yeah, a little. I like the scruff look. It suit ya, Jacko.¡± Kas replied as she turned her gaze forward, staring at the road ahead. He tilted his head to the side and gently rubbed his chin. ¡°You think so too? Dana says the same thing.¡± Kas blankly stared forward for a moment. ¡°Dana? Still with her, huh?¡± She asked as she cocked her head to the side and raised her eyebrow. ¡°Yeah. Things are great between us actually,¡± Jackson answered. ¡°How about you, Kassie? Are you seeing anybody?¡± ¡°Nope. That ain¡¯t gonna change neither,¡± She barked. ¡°You know me.¡± She glared at him but quickly looked forward again as she saw her¡¯s and Izzy¡¯s house come into view. ¡°Left up here. It¡¯s the light blue house with the garage.¡± Jackson nodded as he turned into her driveway, pulling up and parking to the right near the entrance. He got out of the car and Kas opened her door, but Jackson jogged around to her side before she could get out. He reached for her hand, but she shoved him away as she struggled to pull herself from inside. Jackson extended his shoulder forward, offering her a crutch once again. She rested her hand on him and he wrapped his arm around her back. Kas hobbled to the entrance with Jackson at her side. They entered the house and she plopped down onto the couch, clicking the tv on with the remote. He found a spot next to her and watched as she flipped through channels. Kas¡¯ stomach rumbled but she ignored it by staring at the TV. ¡°Oh, you must be starving,¡± Jackson said as he looked over to her. ¡°Please tell me you have actual food in the kitchen¡ Ya know what never mind, I just look myself.¡± He stood up and walked past Kas. She glanced at him as he stepped behind the couch, before returning her gaze to the large boxy screen. Jackson knocked around in the other room as Kas listened in from the living room. She saw the light from the refrigerator beam through the archway. ¡°Seriously? All you have is ramen noodles and hot sauce?¡± He asked as he placed his ingredients onto the counter. ¡°What? Don¡¯t judge me. I survive just fine.¡± She yelled. ¡°Do you think Izzy would mind if I use some of these vegetables?¡± He asked. ¡°Whatever, I¡¯ll just replace them in the morning when I go buy you some actual groceries.¡± ¡°Veggies? The only veggies I¡¯ll be eatin¡¯ it me Vegemite. Izzy probably has a stash in the bottom drawer.¡± Jackson shuffled around inside the fridge for a moment. ¡°I can¡¯t believe you guys actually eat this stuff.¡± He called out as he started to clink around the kitchen, placing pans on the stove. ¡°What the hell are you making anyway? I already know we don¡¯t have any real food in there. We eat take-out most nights.¡± She asked. ¡°You¡¯ll see. I¡¯m actually pretty good in the kitchen now, believe it or not.¡± He answered. Sizzles came from the kitchen as he started to cook and Kas lost interest in the TV. She stood up and walked into the kitchen and watched him. She sat down at the dining table on the far left of the room. ¡°Jacko, a good cook? This I gotta see, mate.¡± She teased and he ignored her. She picked up her phone and tapped the screen as she played a game while she waited. The electronic music rippled through the air as Kas quickly muted the game, glaring at her device in disgust. Jackson placed a plate down in from of her. A steaming hot pile of lightly friend ramen noodles with a stir-fry on top wafted its lovely aroma into her nose. She smiled as he placed down a pair of chopsticks down in front of her. He sat down across from her with his own meal. He used his own chopsticks to take a bite or two. He looked up to her and smiled with his usual warm grin. ¡°Listen, Kassie. I need you to take this recuperation seriously, alright. I¡¯m going to apply to have you transferred from Rennyn and fall directly under my command. I doubt I¡¯ll be able to stop him from teaching some of your classes but at least you won¡¯t report directly under him anymore.¡± He explained. He took another bite as Kas just stared forward, completely motionless for several seconds. ¡°What did you say, Jacko?¡± ¡°I¡¯m transferring you to work directly under me, instead of Rennyn.¡± He answered. ¡°Th-th-thank you. That¡¯s the nicest thing someone has done for me in years.¡± She replied, struggling to get her words out. ¡°It¡¯s nothing Kassie. You know I¡¯d do anything to protect you.¡± Jackson said and continue to eat his stir-fry ramen. Kas quickly followed suit, but for the first time in over a year, she had a true, genuine smile. Slow Ride Kas opened her eyes for the first time in the morning as she woke up for the day. She snuggled into her blanket as she curled into a ball on her bed. A loud yawn echoed through her room. Her comfort was abruptly interrupted by three hard knocks. A long, annoyed sigh slipped from her mouth as she threw the blanket off and stood up from her bed. The knocks repeated in another set of three, echoing down the hall outside her door. ¡°Hold up, Mate! I¡¯ll be there in a minute!¡± She yelled back as she pulled up her tight black pants. She reached for her charcoal grey shirt and slipped it over her head. Lastly, she wrapped her hair into a tie and left her room to answer the door. The knocks seemed to have stopped as she approached the door. When she opened it, Charlotte and Dako were waiting outside. Her eyebrow raised but a smile found her lips at the surprise. ¡°What brings you two ta me front door? Jacko tell ya how to get here?¡± Kas asked. ¡°Yeah, something like that,¡± Charlotte answered. ¡°Can we come in?¡± ¡°Sure thing. Come in, take a seat.¡± Kas replied as she opened the door wider and stepped back. Charlotte and Dako stepped inside. Dako quickly found a spot on the couch as Charlotte stood still as she admired the living room. ¡°You gonna sit down there, Pixiedust?¡± Kas asked as she sat down on the large comfy chair near the couch. Charlotte stopped staring and sat down next to Dako. ¡°Yeah, sorry. This place is nicer than I expected, that¡¯s all.¡± She answered. ¡°So¡ What¡¯s up?¡± Kas asked. ¡°I told Dako why you haven¡¯t been to classes all week and he asked if we could come check on you,¡± she answered but Dako scoffed in annoyance. ¡°He also hates your nickname for him. I, on the other hand love it.¡± ¡°Awe poor little, spoiled rich kid, Dako dunt like the name I gave him?¡± Kas mocked. ¡°Well to fuckin¡¯ bad, Mate. Its stuck now. Don¡¯t worry, I¡¯m sure I¡¯ll come up with something better later.¡± ¡°Why did you let me talk you into this, huh Char?¡± Dako asked. ¡°This is what I get for being nice to the new kid.¡± Charlotte smirked as she turned her head back to face him. ¡°Because underneath that tough guy exterior is a big ole softie and you know it.¡± She answered. Dako scoffed as he glared at Charlotte. ¡°Whatever...¡± He said as he turned his head away. Kas stood up from her chair and stretched. ¡°You guys want coffee? I¡¯m about to make a pot,¡± she asked. ¡°Yeah, sounds good.¡± Charlotte answered. ¡°What about you, Dako?¡± ¡°No¡ Thank you, I¡¯m good.¡± He answered as he stared back at the TV. Kas smiled as she turned and walked into the kitchen. She started the coffee maker but sat down at the small dining table. Kas tapped her fingers on the table as she stared forward blankly. The coffee pot began to steam and bubble as it finally started to brew. Her mind drifted into nothingness as she sat there, continually tapping her fingers. The mind-numbing silence broke as a voice echoed around her. ¡°Hey, Kas,¡± Charlotte greeted as her crimson eyes met Kas¡¯. ¡°So, you want to tell me how you are really feeling?¡± ¡°I¡¯m fin¡ª¡± Kas answered before being cut off. ¡°And don¡¯t say you¡¯re fine. We both know that¡¯s bullshit.¡± Charlotte said as she sat down across from Kas. ¡°What do you want me to say huh, Pixiedust?¡± Kas asked as she sat back in her chair. ¡°You want me to sit here and complain about every little inconvenience or every little pain I have? You should know this now¡ That ain¡¯t gonna happen.¡± ¡°Then I guess I¡¯ll just hafta check ya out myself then.¡± Charlotte answered. ¡°House rules¡ No Magic in the house.¡± ¡°Okay fine then. How about a physical then? I am in the med corps, after all.¡± ¡°I¡¯ve been awake all of five minutes, mate. No pokin¡¯ and proddin¡¯ before me coffee.¡± ¡°Alright, alright. I probably shouldn¡¯t be poking and prodding before I¡¯ve had coffee either.¡± The coffee pot beeped as the bubbling and steam finally stopped. Kas stood up and grabbed a couple of mugs from the cupboard. She placed them on the counter and looked over to Charlotte. ¡°How do you take it?¡± Kas asked. ¡°Just a splash of milk.¡± Charlotte answered. ¡°Then come over here and make your own.¡± ¡°Sure,¡± Charlotte said as she stood up and grabbed the milk from the fridge, pouring a bit into her mug. Kas topped off both of their cups with fresh brew coffee and both of them sat at the table once again. She sipped her hit drink and stared down at the newspaper spread out in front of her. ¡°Ah, yeah. A nice hot cup of coffee in the morning does the trick.¡± She said after a long sip. Charlotte raised her neon blue eyebrow at her and smiled. ¡°Yes, yes it does,¡± she replied. ¡°Especially after a long morning of training.¡± ¡°You an¡¯ Dako training first thing, huh?¡± ¡°No¡ Jackson trains me actually.¡±The author''s tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon. ¡°Jacko?¡± Kas asked. ¡°Well I guess that makes sense. He does seem to like teaching one on one.¡± ¡°Well, he is the reason I¡¯m even in The Hunter¡¯s Guild at all. I wandered the streets until he found me.¡± Charlotte explained. Kas sighs after another sip but looks up at Charlotte. ¡°On the streets¡ I guess none of us have a happy story. Its not like any of us become hunters because we want to,¡± she replied. Charlotte smirked as she stared back. ¡°So how about that physical?¡± she asked. ¡°Alright, alright. Just let me finish this up first.¡± Kas answered as she gulped down the last of her coffee from the mug. ¡°Dako! Stay in the living room, alright!¡± Charlotte called out. ¡°Yeah, yeah. Sure thing,¡± he answered back quietly. Charlotte stood up from the table and Kas sighed, standing up as well. ¡°Okay. So, what do you need me to do?¡± Kas asked. ¡°Nothing just yet. I¡¯ll just start my examination,¡± she explained. She grabbed Kas¡¯ wrist and checked her pulse. ¡°Nothing out of the ordinary there.¡± She quickly placed her hand on Kas¡¯ chest and listened for a moment. ¡°Alright, I need you to lift up your shirt. I need to check the wounds on your torso.¡± Kas grunted as she glared back at Charlottes crimson eyes. ¡°For fuck sake, Mate. Do we really need to do this?¡± she asked. ¡°Kas¡ I know it¡¯s hard, but I need to check on these things. I need to make sure its all healing well. You have a lot of wounds and they are all healing at different rates.¡± Charlotte answered, raising an eyebrow at her. ¡°On top of that, it¡¯s been about a week since I¡¯ve last seen you. I need to see what¡¯s going on. ¡°God fucking damnit. Fine!¡± she relented as she took a deep breath, sighing loudly. A moment later Kas lifted her shirt, pulling it over her head. She tossed it on the table and crossed her arms over her chest. ¡°Thank you.¡± Charlotte replied as she traced her fingertips over the many wounds scattered on her body. The blacks, blues, reds, and yellows created an incredible painting with her skin as the canvas. Kas scoffed as she closed her eyes. ¡°why are ye wasting time thankin¡¯ me. Just do what ya gotta and be done with it,¡± She snapped. ¡°It won¡¯t take long, I promise.¡± Charlotte replied as Kas flinched with each wound or scar Charlotte touched. Before long she pulled her hands away from Kas¡¯ body and smiled. ¡°You are healing up nicely. It seems like you are taking bed rest seriously. I hope this continues.¡± ¡°Can I put me shirt back on now?¡± Kas replied. ¡°Sure, I¡¯m done here for now. If things keep going well, you should be able to come back sooner rather than later. Just remember rest is key here.¡± ¡°Yeah, yeah. I know. Jacko has been stoppin¡¯ by and houndin¡¯ me to take it easy but thanks Dr. Pixie.¡± ¡°Good. You need someone to stay on your ass. We can¡¯t have you getting hurt while in recovery.¡± Charlotte replied as she smiled at Kas. ¡°Well, my check up is over. Dako and I should probably get back. Our classes will be starting soon.¡± ¡°Yeah, that¡¯s probably a good idea. Izzy should be dropping by soon enough for lunch. She tends to drop off my homework from my classes. So, that keeps my mind busy at least.¡± ¡°Oh, that¡¯s good. I was wondering how you were planning to catch up, but it seems Izzy has you covered.¡± Charlotte said as she turned and walked out of the kitchen as Kas followed her out. ¡°Alright, Dako. Time to go. We need to get back before classes start.¡± Charlotte said as she stared at him on the couch. He looked over to her and smiled at her words. ¡°Finally. We can get out of here.¡± He answered as he looked back over to Kas. ¡°I¡¯m glad everything is going well for you. Keep recovering. I wanna face off against you in class one of these days. So, you better get well soon. That way I can kick your ass.¡± ¡°Yeah, yeah. Keep talking tough, richboi Dako.¡± Kas teased as she walked over and held the door open for them. Charlotte and Dako both walked toward the door, but Charlotte stopped and faced Kas. ¡°Later. I¡¯ll be by for another check up soon enough. Take care. I know Jackson worries about you,¡± she said as she walked out the door. ¡°Alright. Get well soon, I hope to see you back in classes soon enough, and all that shit. Later.¡± Dako said as he follow Charlotte out. Kas watched them as they walked up a shiny, blue 1967 Shelby Mustang. The two white stripes lined the center of the car as Dako pulled a set of keys from his pocket and unlocked the driver side door. Before long the car pulled out of the driveway, turning on to the road. Kas stared as they drove away, admiring the car. ¡°I knew he was a spoiled rich punk. How the hell else is that loser gonna get a ¡¯67 Shelby?¡± she asked. When they were out of sight, she closed the door and found her way back into the kitchen. Her phone notification chimed but Kas ignored it to pour another cup of coffee. She sat down at the table and took a nice long sip before she felt the need to check her phone. [From Izzy ¨C Yoooo, Kas. I¡¯m comin¡¯ home a little early today, like maybe 11:30 instead of noon. Plz try to have the living room vacuumed at least¡¡..] [To Izzy ¨C Yea yea, keep ur panties on. I¡¯ll clean up a bit before u get here, mate.] [From Izzy - *Thumbs up Emoji*] A few hours later, Kas sat in the living room watching TV. One of Kas¡¯ favorite programs played a rerun but lucky for her it was one of her favorite older episodes. As the show shifted into commercials, she checked her phone and saw the clock read, 11:47. ¡°She ain¡¯t early. Stupid, bitch. Always warning me for no goddamn reason,¡± she grumbled but a moment later, the front door swung open and Izzy stepped inside. ¡°Miss me?!¡± Izzy asked as she dumped a bookbag on the ground next to Kas. ¡°As if. I was hoping you wouldn¡¯t show ya ugly mug around here again.¡± ¡°You know ya love this mug,¡± Izzy replied with a cocky grin. ¡°Ya hungry? I brought us some lunch.¡± Kas¡¯ mouth began to water as she realized she hadn¡¯t eaten all day. ¡°Fuck yeah. I¡¯m starved. What did ya bring, Iz?¡± Izzy placed a greasy paper bag down on the coffee table before flashing a grin. ¡°I stopped at Zach n Dave¡¯s Burgers on the way home. Thought I¡¯d get ya a treat.¡± Kas ripped into the bag and stared back at her friend with wide eyes. ¡°I you were a bloke, id marry ya, Iz.¡± She said, pulling out a greasy paper wrapped burger. ¡°Yeah, Yeah I know, silicone ain¡¯t good enough for ya.¡± She smiled as she snatched a burger from the bag. Neither of them spoken much. In fact , the sounds of chewing and crunches filled the air around them. Before long there were three crumbled up wrappers tossed next to the bag. Kas belched after she ate her last few fries and finished off her drink. ¡°Holy fuck, mate. That place is fuckin lit. How do they make it so damn excellent.¡± ¡°Got no idea but I heard the owners use magic. I mean what else explains the heavenly greatness of everything produced in there?¡± Izzy answered as she crumbled her wrapper up. She panicked slightly when she checked her phone. ¡°Ah fuck me! I''m gonna be late! Jackson is gonna kick my ass.¡± She scrambled to get her things as she bolted out the door. Kas slouched back as she watched her friend. A wide grin found her at the thought of Jacko pounding her in combat training. She picked up her phone and dialed. Kas stood up and gathered her trash as the phone rang. A moment later, they picked up. ¡°Hey, Kas. Whats up?¡± A deep voice asked. ¡°Hey, Dad. You want to hit up the arcade?¡± she asked. ¡°Of course! Its been ages since we hung out¡. Wait. Aren''t you supposed to be in class right now?¡± Kas sighed and rolled her eyes. ¡°Yes, Nate-o. But I went a little too hard in combat trainin'' and got hurt. They sent me home to recover. Now do ya wanna keep gnawing my ear off, or are ya ready to get ya ass handed to ya, old man?¡± ¡°Say no more, I''ll you there ya little shit.¡± Nate replied and the phone clicked as he hung up. She stood up from the couch and picked up her keys. Kas giggled to her self as she locked the front door behind her. Her pace down the sidewalk quickened the closer she got to the garage but she tapped the button on her keychain and the door¡¯s mechanical hinge slid up. She pulled the tight cover off her bike and hopped on, starting the engine. It hummed to life. Kas'' hand rested on the throttle as she revved it a few times before speeding out of the garage. She tapped the garage button once again before she got out of range. The wind through her hair and against her face were things Kas cherished and reveled in. She rarely wore a helmet and today was one of the many where she did not. Riddleton was beautiful, and Kas had no regrets about moving here, even if she did regret the circumstances. Its A Long Way To The Top The light pitter patter of rain dancing on the rooftop and the occasion flash of lightning accompanied by its brother, thunder, played the beat of her soul. Kas sat on the edge of her bed, tapping her phone screen as she waited. Her eyes glanced up to the time, 7:28 AM. ¡°Jacko better get here soon,¡± she grumbled as she stood up from her bed and left the room. Her footsteps echoed on the hardwood as she entered the living room. Izzy looked away from the TV and grinned at her friend. ¡°Why are ya looking so anxious? Your precious little Jacko is on the way, you should be smilin'', right?¡± she asked, powering off the television set. Kas glared at her friend but threw back a half grin, ¡°Oh I''m plenty happy about that, Iz. It''s just¡¡± she trailed off but tensed as a loud thunder crack roared. ¡°It¡¯s just a little thunderstorm, Mate. I know how ya feel about em, but you know--" ¡°I do know. Ya don¡¯t gotta remind me every time it rains. It aint changin'' how I feel about it, alright.¡± Kas interrupted as she crossed her arms over her chest. She glanced at her phone again, checking the time, 7:31 AM. She sighed out a groan as she flopped into the navy blue recliner chair. ¡°He''s late¡¡± Kas complained. Izzy giggled, covering her mouth. ¡°You are too cute sometimes, ya know that? It only been a fuckin'' minute, Kas. Don''t let your panties get into a wad. He''ll be here soon, I''m sure of it.¡± A moment later two car doors slammed outside. Kas quickly turned her head toward the front door and stared intently. ¡°That better be him.¡± ¡°Who the fuck else is it gonna be? I''m pretty sure the ice cream man don¡¯t make house calls this early,¡± Izzy teased and a smile formed on Kas'' face. ¡°There she is.¡± A smile matching Kas'' appeared on Izzy¡¯s lips. Three hard knocks echoed across the room and in an instant, Kas jumped to her feet and answered it. Jackson and Charlotte stood together under an umbrella on the other side of the door. ¡°Oi! I shoulda known you would bring Pixiedust along,¡± she complained but shrugged. ¡°She is your doctor, after all,¡± Jackson replied. ¡°Before I can authorize anything, you need an examination.¡± Kas scoffed as she shifted her hips and crossed her arms, ¡°No magic in the house.¡± She glared at Charlotte before eying Jackson. He reached forward and yanked on her wrist, stepping back with Charlotte as Kas stumbled outside, ¡°No more excuses.¡± He said as he looked over to blue haired girl next to him. ¡°Alright, work your magic and let me know what you find.¡± Charlotte nodded, placing her hand on Kas'' shoulder, muttering something to herself as she closed her eyes. When her eyes opened she grinned at Kas and looked back to Jackson, ¡°She has remarkable natural healing. She is far from well, but in the month she has been recovering, she has made tremendous progress.¡± Charlotte explained. ¡°So, what would you suggest?¡± he asked. ¡°She should be able to return to book studies but nothing too taxing¡ physically.¡± She answered. Jackson smiled and turned back to Kas, ¡°Good news, you can return to regular classes, but no combat training.¡± Kas scoffed at him, ¡°Fuck that! I¡¯m good to go, Mate. Get me back in there.¡± ¡°Kassie¡ no. Why are you so eager to break your body again already?¡± he asked. ¡°Cause if I laze about anymore, I''m gonna end up killing somebody, and I¡¯d rather put that energy toward somethin¡¯ useful.¡± Kas explained. ¡°Ya know, she''s not wrong, Jackson.¡± Charlotte said. He placed his hand on his forehead and chuckled, ¡°Alright, alright. One step at a time, champ. Let''s just get you back to classes and see how you do. Then we''ll talk about combat.¡± Kas rolled her eyes and sighed, ¡°Fine¡¡± Izzy laughed out loud from inside the house as Kas huffed in frustration. ¡°Nobody makes ya bend that way like your precious Jacko, am I right. Good luck today, Mate.¡± ¡°Fuck off, Izzy!¡± she growled. ¡°You two done yet? I can''t have you late on your first day back now can I?¡± Jackson asked and Charlotte snickered. ¡°Yeah, we''re done. Lets go.¡± She said, reaching into her pocket. She clicked the remote and the garage began to open. Jackson raised an eyebrow at her. ¡°Uh, what do you think you are doing there, Kassie?¡± ¡°Going to class.¡± she answered. ¡°Not like that you aren''t,¡± he replied. ¡°Bella!¡± he shouted, quickly reaching to into Kas'' hoodie pocket. He yanked the keys out and tossed them at Izzy, just as she stepped into the doorway. ¡°Yeah?¡± she asked and gasped as she caught them. ¡°Oh, what am I doing with these?¡± ¡°Hold on to them for Kassie, will ya?¡± he asked. ¡°What the fuck, Jacko?¡± Kas demanded as her face grew bright crimson. ¡°Uh, yeah¡ what she said?¡± Izzy replied. ¡°Would both of you just relax? I¡¯m driving her to the academy.¡± ¡°R-re-really?¡± Kas asked as her normally stern face softened slightly. Izzy giggled as she stared at her friend. ¡°Yeah sure, not a problem.¡± This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere. The day seemed to merge as Kas blinked her eyes. One minute she was standing out front of her house, the next she stood in the elevator as it opened up into the hallway of lockers on floor fifteen. The pressures of this place seemed like less than before, almost like a weight had been lifted. Kas walked down the tiled floor with ease. Her sense of dread vanished from the air. Before long Kas entered one of the classrooms. Her eyes widened as she saw a very tall, brunette woman standing at the front where Rennyn usually was. She paused for a moment but sighed in relief and continued in. Kas found a spot near the back of the class. She glanced at the whiteboard and in the top right corner there was a name; Professor Irish London. The name sounded familiar and for some reason Kas couldn¡¯t help but listen to ever word the woman spoke, as if she wasted no words and it would be foolish not to listen. She preached a lesson Kas had heard a thousand times but the authority the woman commanded with her voice alone had Kas in awe. ¡°As you all know, silver is the main requirement to permanently kill werewolves, among a great many other creatures. I could get into the science of it all, but the sad reality none of that is going to benefit you. Silver kills them, just know the more pure the silver, the more effective it becomes,¡± she explained. The lens of her black-rimmed glasses reflected the light above her into Kas'' eye as she glanced over. Kas locked eyes with her for a moment but Irish kept scanning the entire class. ¡°Silver is a hunters best friend. Yes ladies, that gives you an excuse to wear jewelry in the field.¡± Irish smirked as she pulled a chain out of her shirt, revealing a small, shiny blade inside of a cross. ¡°But please be discreet. Assume that monsters are keen to silver jewelry and hidden weapons.¡± Kas absorbed every word the women spoke but her focus was broken the moment the first class bell rang. She quickly gathered her books and notes, shoving them into her book bag. She found her way back into the hall and walked to her locker. Kas opened it and jumped as it rained out small folded pieces of paper and sealed envelopes. Heat radiated from her face as she grew fifty shades of red. She picked up a hand full of notes and unfolded them. Her eyes scanned over several and stopped when she read the fifth Get well soon. ¡°Wha-what the fuck is this, some kind of sick joke?¡± Kas asked, raising a eyebrow at the pile of notes. ¡°Pretty cool, right?¡± Charlotte asked as she walked over from a nearby classroom. Kas stared at her as here eyes bounced between the notes and her red-eyed friend. ¡°What is all this?¡± Charlotte chuckled and raised her own eyebrow. ¡°Uh¡ they''re Get Well Cards.¡± ¡°Yeah, no shit, pixie. Who''re they from?¡± ¡°Pretty much the whole combat class and a bunch of other randoms,¡± Charlotte explained. ¡°Once everybody heard about your recovery, they all joined in. Kas huffed and began muttering to her self for a moment but snapped her back to Charlotte, ¡°Why would anybody care about my recovery?¡± ¡°Have you never gotten a Get Well Card before?¡± she asked with her hands on her hips. ¡°We''re hunters. And we all worked hard to get here. We respect each other, got each others back.¡± Kas'' face grew bright red and she remained quiet for a moment. ¡°Everything okay?¡± Charlotte asked as she waved her hand in front of Kas'' face. She shook her head and locked eyes. ¡°Thank you, Charlotte.¡± Kas whispered as she grabbed her last book and slammed her locker. Her stride shifted as she stormed down the hall. She heard Charlotte say something as she walked away but she turned it out as she slipped headphones over her ears. Down several halls and passed many classrooms, Kas found her next door. The sign next to the door read: Mythology, By Reiner Van Helsing. Her interest piqued as she read the name. The Van Helsing works always intrigued her, but mostly because of their fame for hunting both vampires and werewolves. She stepped inside and saw a very old man with long white hair. His face scarred over his left eye but a smile still found his lips. Kas did her usual as she found a seat near the back of the class. The old man sat behind his desk reading an old leather-bound journal. Her phone vibrated him her pocket. She checked and saw a text from Izzy. [From Izzy ¨C Hey mate! How r u getting on?] [To Izzy ¨C Well enough. Werewolf Bio had a new teacher. Sitting through Mythology now. I''ll let u know how it goes at lunch.] [From Izzy ¨C Sure thing Mate-o] A sharp ring sounded as the clock reached 9:35 AM. The old man closed the journal and placed on his desk as he stood up. ¡°My name is Reiner Van Helsing and I''ll be teaching your mythology class for the remainder of the semester.¡± His gruff old voice scratched through the air. He snatched the journal from his desk and faced the class once again. ¡°You should all have photocopies of the book in my hand. Volume One of the journal of Maxim Van Helsing. He is my great-great-grandfather and said to be the greatest Van Helsing that ever lived.¡± Kas listened as he began to lecture from the journal. Her consciousness faded in and out. She had read the journal a thousand times and had it memorized. So, paying attention seemed less important. The class lulled as time seemed to lose sense of its flow. Reiner commanded the class to listen as he explained information and got lost in the retelling of his old adventures. His eyes narrowed as he paused for a moment. ¡°The one thing people most recognize the Van Helsing family for one thing, slaying the father of vampires, Dracula," He explained. ¡°But that¡¯s not entirely true. The truth is that Dracula was not the father of vampires. Ge was simply the strongest known at the time. We discovered later that Valac The Devourer is the father of vampire.¡± Kas quickly sat up in her seat, curiosity getting the better of her. In an instant, her hand shot up as a million questions scoured her mind. Reiner locked eyes with her and smiled. ¡°Miss Bellrose, I believe you have a question. How can I help solve you--" ¡°Yeah, okay so¡ I¡¯ve seen Valac The Devourer mentioned in the lore, but I couldn¡¯t find any solid proof of him being the father of bloodsuckers. Do you have any more information on this?¡± she asked, interrupting him. He didn''t seem to mind as he never dropped eye contact with Kas. ¡°When you meet the man face to face, it¡¯s all the proof you¡¯ll need.¡± Kas'' eyes widened. ¡°You¡¯ve met him¡. And lived to tell about it?¡± ¡°I have, but don¡¯t get too excited. It wasn¡¯t as ¡®epic'' as you kids might imagine.¡± Reiner replied as he did air quotes. ¡°Maybe I could meet up and we could swap stories.¡± She offered with a wild smile. ¡°How old are you, kid?¡± he asked as he raised an eyebrow. ¡°I''m seventeen, gonna be eighteen soon though, but don¡¯t let me age fool ya, gramps. I have some stories that could send an old vet like you into a crying fit.¡± She snapped back with a cocky grin. Reiner chuckled and shook his head. ¡°Alright, kid, you got me. I got a soft spot for sob stories.¡± Kas brimmed with joy as Reiner shifted back to his lecture, returning his attention to the full class. Before much longer, the bell rang and Kas left along with the rest of the students. It was finally her lunch break. So, she marched toward the mess hall, all the while deciding on which of the twenty-three burger options to choose from. Just as she approached the entrance, her footing slipped and she stumbled, catching herself on the wall. She panted as beads of sweat formed on her brow. I must really be out of shape if I cant even walk down the halls anymore. She thought, catching her breath. A warm, familiar, small hand landed on her shoulder from behind. Kas swatted it away as she spun around faced with Charlotte. ¡°Oh¡ uh, hey Pixiedust.¡± She greeted as she desperately tried not to reveal her troubles. ¡°Just checkin¡¯ on you. I wouldn¡¯t feel like I was doing my job if I didn¡¯t check on you whenever I could.¡± She said. ¡°Well, I¡¯m about to grab lunch. Walk with me.¡± Kas replied, quickly turning and making a b-line for the door. Charlotte followed suit as she stepped between the doors. ¡°So how are you feeling, really?¡± ¡°Nope, healthy as a Dingo, mate.¡± Kas snapped back. ¡°No Fatigue, trouble concentrating, mood fluctuations, or anything like that?¡± Charlotte inquired. Kas sighed as she picked up her pace. ¡°Nothing out of the ordinary.¡± ¡°So, you always brace yourself on a wall while painting for a breath? Kas, don¡¯t lie to me. I can scan your body from a distance or by touch. You cannot simply will this away. You have exten--" Charlotte ranted ¡°Geeez, alright. Calm down pixie. I¡¯ve been tired more after walking down the halls between classes. Ya happy now?¡± Kas spat out. She quickly typed the desired code for her burger, and a moment later a greedy paper bag dropped down. Charlotte smirked as she reached over to the burrito machine and dialed in her lunch as well. ¡°Happier. It¡¯s a start, but I want pry for too much on your first day back.¡± Another One Bites The Dust Water splashed onto her face as the stream from the faucet ran down the drain. Kas'' burning, blood-amber eyes stared intently back from the mirror. She stepped back and reached for the paper towel dispenser next to the sink. The plainness of the glossy white tiles in the bathroom strangely comforted her. Kas smirked at her self in the mirror as she flexed her left bicep. ¡°Rock hard! I still got it.¡± She said as her voice echoed against the concrete walls. Kas stormed out of the bathroom and down the hall. She was already late but it didn¡¯t matter. Nothing could stop her today. The large double doors leading into the gym clanked as she pushed them open. A huge smile curled onto her face as she saw Jackson coaching Dako as he sparred with Warren. Izzy waited near the bottom of the pull-out bleacher seats and waved Kas over immediately. Without hesitation she sat down next to her friend. ¡°What kept ya, Mate?¡± Izzy asked as she turned to face her. Kas stared forward, watching Dako and Warren square off. ¡°I had to psych meself up. Been far to long since I got to come at somebody like a yowie.¡± ¡°A yowie¡ c''mon, I know ya can do betta than that. Those fuckin'' things don¡¯t even exist.¡± Izzy teased. ¡°For fuck sake, Iz. I just got back, give me a break, would ya? Don''t you even know what today is?¡± she grumbled as she scowled at Izzy. She shook her head and a scoff slipped out, ¡°Who hell do you think I am, Kas? Just relax and try not to worry so much.¡± Izzy replied as she darted her eyes to the match. Kas waited patiently as Jackson finished up with Dako and Warren. When Dako claimed victor on their last scuffle, she stood up. Jackson whispered something in both of their ears before sending them off. Kas stopped in front of him. Her hands rested on her cocked hips. She raised an eyebrow, gifting him a moment of silence. ¡°Are you ready?¡± he asked ¡°Born ready.¡± Kas answered as she shifted her stance and raised her fists to her chest. ¡°Cute¡ but no. I have something else planned for you.¡± He said with a smirk. ¡°Oh god, Mate. Not more take-it-easy bullshit.¡± Her voice radiated annoyance. His usual soft smile and warm eyes met hers. ¡°Kassie, I really think you are gonna want this instead, just trust me.¡± She dramatically sighed. ¡°Fine¡ what do you have planned?¡± ¡°Well, you aren''t ready as is. Go gear up. I got you a field mission. Let''s go.¡± He ordered. ¡°Wait wh-what? Ar-re you serious?¡± Kas asked stumbling over her words. ¡°Yes Kassie, very serious. I¡¯m sure you''ll enjoy what I have planned. Kas¡¯ face grew bright red as she slowly began to back step. She spun on her heel and walked toward the locker room, going faster with each step. She burst into the room, and found her locker quickly. Kas pulled off her shirt and tossed it inside of the locker. She snatched a black, hooded, long sweatshirt and pulled it over her head. The ballistic-weave material was light as ever and always more durable. Next she wrapped her belt around her waist. Both short sheaths on each side of the best were already filled with Kas'' signature daggers. Lastly she snatched the platinum pistol and placed it into the holster on the back of the belt. She ran her fingers against the beautifully painted Rose¡¯s across the metal. ¡°Alright Axl. Let¡¯s see if you still know how to sing.¡± She said, turning around to leave the room. Kas stepped outside and was greeted by Izzy stand near the door. She squinted her eyes but quickly smiled. ¡°You look happier than normal. What happened?¡± Izzy asked, placing one hand on her hip. ¡°Going on a mission¡ A real mission. Jacko set it all up for me.¡± She replied as a faint smile appeared on her face. ¡°Oh yeah, we all did ours last week. It should be simple enough.Good luck, Mate.¡± Kas grinned at her friend and walked away toward Jackson. She found him coaching other students as she walked up. A moment later he looked over to her and gave her a grin to match her own. ¡°All set?¡± he asked. ¡°Yeah, I got all my essentials. Let¡¯s do this!¡± Kas answered. Alright, give me a moment to finish up with these guys and we''ll go.¡± Jackson said as he turned away from her. She stepped back and waited. Before too long he waved Charlotte over, stepping toward Kas. ¡°Charlotte, keep an eye on things here. I have some important business to attend too.¡± He asked. ¡°Sure thing, Jackson. I got this.¡± Charlotte answered and turned back to face the class. Jackson eyed Kas and signaled her as they walked out of the gym. She met him in the hallway and they walked toward the elevator. They both stepped inside and he pushed the button. Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on Royal Road. As it rose, Kas looked over at Jackson. ¡°What kind of mission are we dealing with?¡± Focused eyes and a sharp mind pierced him as he looked back. He smiled at her, ¡°Intense as ever. Eh, Kassie?¡± ¡°Gotta stay focused. This is me first time hunting in four years.¡± She replied. ¡°Four years, huh?¡± he smirked as her, jo¡°Well I got a case that might interest you. There have been reports of a new hybrid species that¡¯s been terrorizing New Orleans.¡± Her eyes locked onto his, ¡°What is it?¡± Jackson''s eyes narrows slightly, ¡°Werewolf and Hellhound hybrid. Something new entirely to anybody I know and I''ve never seen anything like it.¡± ¡°And you want me to¡. Do what, exactly?¡± Kas asked. ¡°Find it.¡± ¡°and then?¡± she asked. ¡°I''ll leave that up for you to decide.¡± He answered. Kas cocked her head to turn side slightly and half-smiled. ¡°O-okay.¡± Her eyes were locked onto the twin steel doors in front of her. Kas blanked out as she stared forward. The world around her blurred and shifted. When the elevator doors opened, Jackson stepped out and she followed down a long hall of doors. He quickly found the room he was looking for and unlocked it. As she followed him in, she noticed two beds in an otherwise bland room. She dropped her bag at the foot of the first bed and plopped down. ¡°Kassie, are you sure you''re ready for this?¡± Jackson asked, dropping his duffel bag on the other bed as he looked back at her. Kas straightened up and smiled at him. ¡°Of course I am. I''ve been ready for months, Jacko.¡± She replied. He shook his head and scoffed. ¡°I''m sure you have but I still need to follow protocol, you know that.¡± Jackson sat down on the chair between the beds, which happened to be the only chair in the room. ¡°Yeah, yeah. Hunters and all their fuckin'' rules.¡± She snapped back as she laid back onto the bed. ¡°Well, regardless of the rules, we have a job to do.¡± She sat up quickly, ¡°Right-o, straight to business, huh.¡± ¡°Well based on your grades, you seemed to be the most suitable member of your class to assign a mission like this.¡± Jackson continued. ¡°I''m giving you point on this. So let¡¯s see how you handle yourself.¡± Kas squinted her eyes at him but smirked. ¡°What do we know so far?¡± ¡°A werewolf-hellhound hybrid is only our best guess at what it is. It kills and feeds like a werewolf but there are always traces of brimstone at each location. One last thing, it doesn¡¯t leave tracks. We have nothing to follow except a trail of bodies.¡± He explained. ¡°Can you take me to each spot?¡± Kas asked as her mind raced back and forth. ¡°Yeah, let¡¯s go.¡± He stood up from his seat and grabbed his duffel. ¡°Grab your bag.¡± Kas quickly stood up And picked up her bag. She opened it and pulled out a small backpack, throwing out over her back. She clipped it around her waist and pulled the straps tight. Jackson raised an eyebrow as he slightly nodded and Kas smirked at him. ¡°What? I don¡¯t need the rest.¡± She said. ¡°I know, Kassie. Let''s go.¡± He replied as he held the door open. Without a second thought she slipped passed him and toward the elevator. She pressed the button and waited for the doors. ¡°Over here.¡± Jackson said as he walked passed the elevator. Kas peered over at him and placed her hands on her hips as she cocked her head to the side. ¡°Of course it''s not back down stairs. I shoulda guess that.¡± She quickly followed him as he led her to the room at the end of the hall. He quickly pulled out a key and unlocked the door. As Kas stepped inside, her eyes widened. The walls painted in scarlet splashes. Her eyes darted around as she lifted her head and began to sniff the air. She squinted her eyes and she took deep wiff. ¡°Somethin¡¯s not right here, Jacko. Why does it smell like dog in here?¡± She asked, taking a deep breath, tasting the air with her nose. ¡°Uh, we are hunting a werewolf-hellhound creature. I¡¯d assume dog would be a normal smell.¡± He answered, watching as she searched the room. ¡°No shit sherlock, but this different. I know a wolf scent, and a hellhound scent. Even if I¡¯ve never smelled it before, I¡¯d know what it is but this is not either of those. This one smells more like a house dog.¡± Kas explained. Jackson quietly scoffed. ¡°You can read that deeply into scents?¡± He asked. ¡°Yeah, its one of the side effects from¡ the Thorne in me side.¡± She answered. ¡°Well either way, I have no idea why it smells like dog. Is there anything else that you can gather from this room?¡± Kas scanned around once more, taking in another deep breath. ¡°Probably, but nothing that¡¯s going to help me solve this. On to the next spot?¡± She asked and he nodded at her, stepping back out through the door. She followed him down the hall listening the light thud of his steps on the carpeted floor. He gaze locked onto the back of his head as she blindly followed him. A bell snapped her from her trance as the elevator doors opened up. ¡°Where to next?¡± She asked, stepping into the elevator. ¡°Basement floor. There was another incident there.¡± He answered, standing next to her as the doors. When the doors opened once again, there was a dark room outside. Kas scoffed as she reached onto her pocket and pulled out a small flashlight. She clicked it on and the room was illuminated, at least enough to see around them. A thin chain hung from the ceiling and Kas walked over and tugged on it, flickering an old light back to life. The familiarity of dog scent wafted through the air. She ventured further in and flicked on her flashlight once she left the reach of the ceiling light. Blood. Mutt¡ No wait, its another mutt. Not the same as before. Her mind processed as she began to sniff the air and examine the newly discovered bloody crime scene. She glanced over it and sniffed again. She grumbled to herself as she quickly turned on her heel, storming back toward the elevator. Her vision tunneled through the door and she looked over to Jackson. ¡°Something isn¡¯t right. Take me to the last know spot.¡± ¡°What is it, Kassie?¡± He asked. ¡°There is another mutt¡¯s scent here. It doesn¡¯t make any sense, mate.¡± She answered, sighing in frustration. ¡°Well there is only one more spot to check out. So lets see you solve this one. I know you can do it.¡± He said and pushed the button for the top floor. Kas¡¯ head hung low and only lifted it back up once the doors opened up again. Jackson led her out and pointed down the hall. ¡°The last room at the end of the hall. Let¡¯s see if you can see what the rest could not.¡± He explained. Kas took a deep breath and stood up straight. ¡°Alright, let¡¯s solve this bitch.¡± She marched down the hall and approached the door. She heard movement behind it and quickly gripped her pistol on her hip as she opened the door. Keeping her weapon undrawn, she braves her way in. She rounded a corner into the living area and jumped as she locked eyes with a large puppy. Its fur was like it was blood soaked but somehow still dry. Its piercing golden eyes looked into her soul. Kas dropped her gun to the floor the moment she saw a huge red bow tied around its neck. She slowly approached it and quickly found a card attached to the ribbon. Her fingertips slid around the card and she opened it, smiling as she instantly recognized the scent. The card inside only had a few words, but those words meant everything to her in that exact moment. Happy Birthday, Kassie. From Jacko. Born In The Bayou Slobber and a strange, soft, crushing weight pressed Kas into her bed and soaked her face. A loud groan that seemed to shift into a growl the longer it lasted. She sat up, pushing her dog to the side. He flopped back onto her lap and panted for a moment. Smoke seemed to bellow out of his mouth and nose. Kas shook her head and rubbed her eyes, managing to retrieve partial vision. ¡°What the in the hell am I going ta do with ya.¡± Kas said as she sighed, wiping her face off with her blanket. She smiled at the dog and playfully pushed the side of his face. ¡°Alright. Let¡¯s go, Blaze.¡± She flipped her covers off her and Blaze jumped off the bed and sprinted around, sliding to a stop next to the door. Kas snickered at him and stood up from the bed. Her black and white flannel pajama bottoms hung loosely on her. The waist line was even crooked on her hips. She stepped into a pair of slippers that looked like furry monsters eating her feet. As she stepped closer to the door, Blaze stood up and began to bounce on his two front paws. She raised her eyebrow at him and he locked eyes with her. ¡°Okay, okay. Let¡¯s potty, ya little shit.¡± She teased. Her pace quickened and she opened her door. Blaze waited patiently. His bouncing completely stopped. Kas faced him and leaned forward. ¡°Shake,¡± she ordered. Blaze instantly lifted his right paw and extended toward her. She examined his posture and form but did grab his paw. He moved his paw up and down, Kas returned the gesture. She stood back up straight and smiled at him. ¡°Good boy. Go ahead. Close the door on the way out.¡± She said firmly. In that moment, Blaze calmly stepped out the door and trotted down the hall, turning left at the end. She reached her arms into the air and yawned. As per her morning ritual, Kas stepped in front of the mirror over her dresser and prepared for the day. She reached for her brush as she pulled the loose scrunch bun out of the back of her head. The click of the front door echoed up the hall. Good mutt. She thought. The knots slowly began to work out and she brushed her warm auburn hair. Her crimson eyes reflected gold as she stared at herself in the mirror. The world around her melted as if time stopped. She felt a strange presence around her. An aura of safety. The familiarity of it reminded her of Jackson but she couldn''t pick up his scent. The aura radiated around her and slowly grew more intense as she heard the front door slam closed with the wind outside. Her heart began to beat faster as she heard slowly footsteps approach from the hallway. She turned around and found Blaze standing in the doorway. His head cocked to the side with his tongue out and let out a happy whimper. Kas gasped as she saw him and smiled. ¡°Oh, it''s only you, boy. did ya take care of your business?¡± she asked him and without delay, Blaze dropped his head down once before lifting it to stare at her again. She nodded in approval. ¡°Now, ya next assignment. Go wake up ole Iz, alright. Report back when ya mission is accomplished.¡± She ordered and spun back around, continuing to brush her hair once again. Blaze¡¯s claws clinked against the hardwood flooring as he left the room and planned to ambush Izzy. Only a few minutes later Kas heard a door down the hall open and a hard thud. ¡°Fuck sake, Kas! Get the mangy fuckin¡¯ beast off me!¡± Izzy shrieked and Kas chuckled whistling loudly. A very happy and self-approved dog pranced back into the room and Kas had only just finished brushing her hair out. A horrible howl ripped through the air as Izzy raged in her room. Her door slammed shut and hard thuds bounced around the room from the door. Izzy pulled herself into the doorway, hair wild and smeared make-up on her face. Not to mention she was buck-ass naked. ¡°If that fucking mutt does that one more time¡¡± Izzy warned as she trailed off. ¡°What, mate?¡± Kas replied as she pulled hair back into a proper ponytail. She spun around to face her friend and cringed. ¡°Ya look like a fuckin¡¯ hot mess. What the hell happened?¡± Izzy growled and stepped into the room. ¡°Don¡¯t you change the fucking subject. I''m going to put a silver bullet in the fuckin¡¯ mutt next time he comes in my room, EVER. Wakin¡¯ me up agian, I¡¯ll unload a clip in ta his face.¡± She warned as she shot a nasty death-beam glare at Blaze. He cocked his head to the side and appeared to smile at her. Izzy seemed to snap and she rolled her eyes into the back of her head as she spun around. She reached into the drawer of Kas¡¯ bedside table, pulling out a pistol, cocking it into the air as she turned back around. Kas pushed Izzy back and held her to the ground. She bounced Izzy¡¯s wrist and forced her to drop the gun. ¡°Just calm down, Mate. Why don''t ya go make a cup of coffee and get ta wakin¡¯ up.¡± Kas suggested, picking up the pistol as she stood up from Izzy. Izzy quickly stood up and sigh deeply. ¡°I wasn''t really gonna shoot him ya know¡¡± She said as she quickly turned around and walked out the doorway. ¡°I know, Iz.¡± Kas whispered to herself. Kas knelt down to Blaze and patted him on the head. ¡°Ya did good, doggo.¡± You ready for breakfast?¡± She asked him as he stood straight up. He barked in reply as he repeated his previous two-paw bounce. ¡°Alright let¡¯s get some grub, mutt.¡± Kas said as she turned around and finally left her room. Blaze followed behind her obediently as he kept up with her quick pace. Her day lulled forward and Kas managed to get to her third period Mythology Class. Irish London was teaching today and she had on her typical square, wire-rimmed glasses. Her short blonde hair always perfectly groomed, feathered to perfection. Kas sat at her desk listening to her and wrote notes down every time she heard something interesting or hadn''t heard before. Blaze sat still as a shadow as he stared forward directly next to Kas¡¯ chair. He may have been young but he was smarter than any dog Kas had ever heard of. She kept her eyes on Irish as she reached down without looking and stroked Blaze¡¯s bloody crimson fur. He kept his head forward but eased slightly as she touched him but quickly snapped back. She pat him on the head and smiled. Kas coughed lightly and lowered her voice. ¡°Good boy,¡± she whispered before returning her hand to the notebook in front of her. The bell was about to ring but Kas perked up, knowing tomorrow''s lesson would be posted on the whiteboard a moment after the class leaves. Blaze shuffled him feel in anticipation. ¡°Not yet, doggo!¡± She whispered harshly. He settled and she pat him once more. ¡°Alright everyone. Test this Friday, be ready.¡± Irish announced as she stepped back around her desk at the front of the classroom. ¡°But today is Thursday.¡± A light male voice called out from across the room. ¡°Then I sincerely hope you studied for it, dear. That or do the last minute thing, see how far that gets you.¡± Irish replied in a voice so stern, yet somehow tender. Kas cocked her head to the side as she said it. Blaze did so by coincidence of his own accord but quickly wagged his tail when he looked up and saw Kas just as confused. The boy Irish spoke to, ducked down as his face grew red. The bell rang and the entire class stood up, leaving the room. Kas sat back as usual and waited for the class to leave. She saw Irish digging through her light brown shoulder bag. She pulled out a dry erase marker and began to write on the board. Kas stared intently as each letter formed in the corner of the large white surface. She was always impressed by how tall Irish actually was. She stood just a scosche over the six foot tall white board. ¡°Norse Mythology Lessons - Starting Monday¡± was scribbled onto it and Kas got a wide grin. This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere. ¡°Fuck yeah, Mate!¡± She cheer quietly to herself as she pulled back and fist pumped. Luckily the class was still leaving, so nobody heard her. She could never be mistaken for a nerd, right? After jotting down the note for the new lesson plan, she stood up and clicked her teeth. Blaze stood up and stepped aside for her. Kas left her desk and clicked her teeth again. Blaze followed in tow. She found her way down the hall and into the lunchroom. She found her favorite burger vending machine and paid for her lunch. As it popped out of the bottom, she snagged it and looked over to Blaze, smirking at him. ¡°What do you want, doggo? Anything you want.¡± She asked him and he seemed to smile at her as he bounced around. He quickly flip directions and ran quick but nimble through the hunters as he found what he really wanted. Kas chased after him with a wide smile. She chuckled at the irony when she found him in front of the hotdog vending machine. With help from Kas, Blaze picked out his favorite lunch and she carried their food out into the large simulated outdoor space. As she seated herself onto a bench, Blaze hopped up next to her. He placed both of his front paws onto the light brown wood of the picnic table. Kas snapped her head at him growled. ¡°Ah!¡± she shouted and Blaze¡¯s energetic personality calmed under a mask of obedience. His tail wagged, rapidly sweeping the ground underneath. Kas placed the hot dog, bun and all, in front of him. He fought his desires to attack his food. The ruffle of the paper bag caught his attention as Kas pulled her food out. She nodded once and turned back to her own food as Blaze devoured his food in two quick chomps. Kas snickered as she bit into her burger. Before even fully swallowing her bite, she shoved a few fries into her mouth. The added salty crunch sent her taste buds into overdrive. So, she quickly pushed several more between her lips. The pop of a can ripped through the air as she chugged down one of her favorites; a V energy drink. After her last gulp, she crushed the can in her hands, tossing it into her food bag. A few french fries land in front of Blaze and he scarfed them down almost instantly but Kas¡¯ phone chimed in notification. A message from Jackson alerted across her screen. [From Jacko - Hey Kassie. I was wondering if you have any plans for tonight?] [To Jacko - Not much, Mate. Just gonna be relax¡¯ after classes today.] [From Jacko - Would you want to hang out tonight? Maybe watch the new episode of Supernatural?] [To Jacko - You still watch it?! I thought you hated the boys.] [From Jacko - Not exactly, but we haven''t had a chance to just hang out yet, and I thought it would be fun for old times sake. So, are ya in?] [To Jacko - My place or yours?] [From Jacko - Does 7 sound alright, Kassie? I¡¯ll cook dinner before it starts.] [To Jacko - Jacko¡ Is this a date ] [From Jacko - See ya at 7 Kassie.] Kas tingled with excitement and Blaze jumped from his seat on the bench, pacing back and forth behind her. She scarfed down her burger in a few more large bites and downed most of the fries too, emptying the remains into her bag. The second can of V remained unopened as she stood up and snatched it and the bag of trash. She looked at it and then turned around to see Blaze pacing. ¡°You gotta use the little doggo¡¯s room, dontcha?¡± she asked before checking the time on her phone. ¡°We got time, let''s hit it before the next class.¡± Blaze stopped his pacing and wagged his tail in response as he followed her back into the halls. Kas¡¯ mind was in a fog the rest of the day. Nothing cleared her head until she arrived at home. Rosy came to stop inside the pristinely clean garage and Blaze waited patiently outside on the gravel. When Kas turned around, he didn''t seem to be panting at all, which surprised her. She cocked her head to the side and Blaze mimicked her. ¡°You ran all that way with me and still haven''t even broke a sweat, eh doggo?¡± His tail began to wag as he let out excited whimpers. ¡°Alright, let¡¯s go, boy.¡± She lifted the helmet strapped to the back of her bike. As she flipped it over, a smile curled onto her lips. She stared down at a shrunken head resting in Izzy¡¯s helmet. Even inside a plastic bag, Izzy was gonna flip out. Kas let out a snicker and Blaze yipped along with her. Izzy was inside sprawled out on the couch as Kas stepped inside. A smile curled to Kas¡¯s lips as she saw her. Izzy sat up on the couch and perked her head at the helmet in Kas¡¯ hands. ¡°W¡¯at in the ¡®ell are ya doin with me helmet, Kas?¡± Izzy barked. Kas replied by tossing it to her. ¡°I found something in it, thought I should show ya,¡± she said as she stopped next to the couch. Izzy shrieked and tossed it aside. The shrunken head rolled out, inside the bag and stopped near by the helmet. ¡°What in the fuck is that, Mate?!¡± She shouted as she stood up to her feet quickly. Kas chuckled at her. ¡°It¡¯s a shrunken head. My homework for the weekend. They got me studyin¡¯ Hoodoo in the magic class,¡± she explained. ¡°Oh wait¡ I think it has a message for ya.¡± The head on the ground wiggled a bit and a raspy voice came out muffled from the bag. ¡°Izzy, will you go out with me?¡± ¡°Ahhhh!¡± Izzy screamed as she stumbled backward back into the couch. ¡°How the actual fuck is it talking?!¡± Kas burst out into laughter and fell backward to the ground holding her stomach. ¡°Okay, okay. You can stop now Pixiedust. We got her good, Mate.¡± Kas said as he laughter slowly subsided. Izzy¡¯s face grew bright red in both angry and embarrassment. ¡°Fuck you both!¡± She shouted, stomping out of the room and down the hall. The slam of her door echoed back as she sulked in her room. Blaze whimpered and Kas looked down at him. He nudged her pocket, pushing Kas¡¯ phone into her hip. She immediately knew what he wanted and she pulled out her phone, checking the time. It read 6:42 pm. ¡°Ah shit! I need to get cleaned up. Jacko is gonna be here soon, Doggo. Thanks for the reminder.¡± She replied as she patted him on the head and dashed to her own room. It wasn''t long before a knock echoed down the hall and Blaze bolted out of Kas¡¯ room. She heard his claws click on the hardwood as she finished preparing herself. Newly brushed hair and a washed face are all she needed¡ other than mentally preparing for the moment at hand. She followed the path of Blaze, finding him whimpering and bouncing near the front door. She took a deep breath but another hard knock echoed around her. ¡°Ya gonna answer that or what!?¡± Izzy shouted as she cracked up her door and slammed it shut again. ¡°Calm down ya, Fuckwit!¡± Kas shouted back. She opened the front door and Jackson¡¯s scruffy face greeted her with that sweet smile she adored. ¡°Hey, Jacko.¡± ¡°Hey Kassie. I hope you are ready. I got something killer planned for tonight.¡± He replied, stepping inside with an ice chest and a back of groceries. Kas stepped aside, allowing him entry but scooped the back from the top of the cooler. ¡°Uh, Jacko¡ what is all this?¡± She asked as she peered into the back and found mostly potatoes and corn on the cob. ¡°I figured since we are in my home state of Louisiana and it''s our first chance to really hang out, I¡¯d treat ya to a crawfish dinner.¡± He explained as he walked toward the kitchen. ¡°Where¡¯s Izzy? I thought she would want in on this.¡± Kas chuckled at his question. ¡°Yea, Iz might join us but right now she is hold up in her room.¡± ¡°Ah well, she will smell it soon enough then.¡± He said, placing the ice chest on the countertop. Kas placed the bag next to it stepped out of the way as Jackson searched the kitchen for the biggest pot they had. As Jackson prepared the food in the kitchen, Kas went into the living room, and picked up the mess. Mainly the helmet and the shrunken head on the floor. After stowing it in her room, she swept and vacuumed. She plopped onto the couch and Blaze jumped next to her and rested his head in her lap. Jackson banged dishes around but somehow managed to keep things quieter than Kas expected but soon enough he came out. She looked at the time; 7:54 pm. ¡°It¡¯s almost ready, Kassie. Go ahead and switch to the channel. I¡¯ll only been a few more minutes.¡± He replied as he went back into the kitchen once again. She knew he was right by the aroma wafting through the house. Kas tapped the remote and changed it to The CW. A few minutes later, Jackson stepped back into the living room carrying two plates, a large bowl, and a roll of paper towels. He placed them all down on the coffee table. The plates had mostly potatoes and corn on it, with a few random assorted veggies but the bowel was filled with the crimson of freshly cooked crawfish. She smiled at him as he sat next to her. A moment later Supernatural started and the soft rock rift of Creedence Clearwater Revival¡¯s - Born on the Bayou played. It opened into a small town diner in Louisiana. ¡°Fuckin¡¯ right, Mate! I love Benny!¡± Kas cheered as she watched the old vampire buddy of Dean Winchester came onto the screen. Kas felt her happy place surge through her once again for the first time since Jackson had her reassigned to him. Killer Queen The day started off well enough. Kas went to classes as usual but something seemed strange in combat class. She saw another redhead girl standing at the back of the group as they all watched the others spar. She reminded Kas of herself a bit. Mostly in how her hair had that same exact bright, fiery orange than she used to have. Kas ran her fingers through her paler auburn locks and sighed. Her eyes locked onto this seemingly shy girl in black glasses. Her stance seemed¡ shaky to say the least, almost like she is terrified to be here. Izzy''s familiar voice snapped Kas'' attention from the girl. "I thought you weren''t into taco, Kas," she said. "What the hell are you going on about?" Kas asked, raising an eyebrow and planting her hand on her hip. "Don''t think I don''t see ya oglin'' at that cutie across the room." Izzy answered, raising an eyebrow in return. Kas glared back, full death beam mode. ¡°Christsake, Mate. Is there any thing ya won''t fuck?¡± she snapped back. A wicked smirk curls onto Izzy¡¯s lips. ¡°You know me, Kas. I¡¯m more of a lover not a fighter.¡± ¡°I¡¯m starting to think there is such a thing as too much love. Can ya stop tryin¡¯ ta cop a root for five seconds and bugger off.¡± Kas crossed her arms and turned away from her. Izzy¡¯s eyes widened as she grinned at her friend. ¡°Alright alright, Mate. I¡¯ll back off for now. Talk to ya after lunch.¡± she replied, as she walked away singing quietly to herself. ¡°Kas has a crush, Kas has a crush.¡± Her head bobbed back and forth as she sang. ¡°Kassie, why don''t you come on up.¡± Jackson¡¯s powerful voice boomed around her, snatching her from the Izzy-fueled cloud of anger. Kas quickly moved to the front as Dako and Warren stepped back into the crowd of students. Jackson¡¯s eyes landed on Kas but shifted to the direction she stared. ¡°Ginger, would you please come up too.¡± The shy, red-orange haired girl nearly jumped out of her skin as she stared back at him. ¡°Y-y-yes, of course. Right away, sir.¡± Ginger answered quiet, just above a whisper. His smile was gentle as ever. ¡°Just call me Jackson. No need to be so formal.¡± He leaned over to Kas and whispered, ¡°Take it easy on her. This is her first day. I''m not even sure if she has ever been in a fight before.¡± Kas¡¯ eyes narrowed as she thought for a moment but smirked, whispering back, ¡°Let me take the lead on this one, alright?¡± She asked and Jackson slightly cocked his head. ¡°Jacko, just fuckin¡¯ trust me, ¡®kay.¡± He nodded at her and both of them refocused their attention back on Ginger, who seemed to be delaying her debut. The class seemed to go silent as the girl slowly approached but Kas stood before her, lifting her fists. Ginger stood there slightly shaky and stared back at Kas awkwardly. There was an unnerving silence between them. ¡°Put up your dukes.¡± Kas finally called out, breaking the deafening silence. Ginger shuffled in place a moment, seemingly trying to get her footing right. ¡°Y-y-yeah, sure thing.¡± she said, shakily raising her barely clenched fists into the air. Kas shook her head slightly as she saw this nerd ready to collapse if a gentle breeze blew by. She lunged at her and threw the hardest left hook she could. Ginger had no time to react and Kas landed clean, dropping her to the ground. Her body hit the floor with a hard thud and Jackson stepped forward to intervene but Kas glared at him. ¡°Back off, Jacko. I told you to trust me.¡± She barked at him and he stopped in place. Kas kneeled down, reaching a hand down to Ginger as the poor girl gasped and moaned in pain. When she turned to face Kas, she paused but did eventually reach for her hand. The moment she took her grasp, Kas yanked her hard, but back to her feet. Ginger gasped into a slight squeak. ¡°How do you feel?¡± Kas asked, releasing the girls hand. She stared back over to Kas with a raised eye-brow as she rubbed her jaw. ¡°My face hurts." ¡°No, not there. Right here?¡± Kas asked as she pointed to her chest with her thumb. Ginger cocked her head to the side and squinted her eyes slightly. ¡°I feel like my heart is going to burst from my chest.¡± ¡°Good. That means ya are still alive, Mate. Now hit me.¡± Her eyes stared blankly through the lenses of her black frames and she shook her head in confusion. ¡°What?¡± ¡°I took a cheap shot, so you owe me one. Now hit me¡ as hard as you can alright. Can you do that for me there Gingersnap Cookie?¡± Kas ordered as she rolled her eyes in annoyance. ¡°Well, you see. It''s¡ well, my name is Ginger¡ Snapp.¡± she replied with a half smile. Kas¡¯ face grew bright red. ¡°Just fuckin¡¯ hit me, alright!¡± she shouted. In a flash, her vision sparked and went black. A sharp pain ripped through the side of her head. What was that? She thought as a second thud pounded into the other side of her head. The world vibrated around her but everything was dark, darker than black. Kas stood up from the gym floor, blinking as her vision came back. One image became clear, Jackson, as the world around him blurred. She blinked for a moment, clearing her vision as she rubbed her jaw. "Did I just get floored by a cookie?" Jackson extended his hand toward her. "Yeah, you did." He answered as a slight smirk appeared. "Now you want to try again? Only this time without the sucker punches?" Kas grabbed his hand and pulled herself up. "No promises," she replied, shifting her natural glare back to Ginger, whose face was bright red as she favored her hand. "You got a good left hook, Weasley." Kas extended her hand toward Ginger. "I-i-i do?" she asked. Ginger hesitated to grab Kas'' hand as she practically shook where she stood. Kas scoffed in annoyance. "I mean yeah, didn''t ya see me on the ground like five seconds ago?" The terrified girl eased some of her tension as she sighed a breath of relief. "So, you aren''t mad?" She asked, reaching her hand forward but stopped before grabbed her hand. A chuckle bellowed out of Kas as a smirking grin curled onto her lips. "Hell no, Mate. I told ya ta do it. I just didn''t expect that big of a wallop back." She answered as she gripped Ginger''s hand firmly and yanked her in close as she whispered into her ear. "Now stand and fight. You know what it''s like to take a hit now. So, don''t fear it." "R-r-right," she stuttered. "Now put up your dukes and let''s do this proper." Kas said as she lifted her own fists once again. Luckily combat class was Kas'' last class for the day and after all the sparring matches were over, all of the students headed into the locker rooms. Kas was still unsure about going in but she knew she had to. Her body was mostly healed so her embarrassment about her wounds was gone but residual nerves lingered for her. Regardless she entered and carefully watched as the other girls changed and gossiped. Some took showers, washing the grim of the work out off. Kas found her locker and took a deep breath as she stared at the fresh change of clothes inside. She closed her eyes and carefully pealed her shirt from her body. It was sticky with sweat but when she opened her eyes, her body appeared completely healed, at least on the outside. It''s not like she expected different, her recovery period helped greatly. She began to breathe more regularly but still wanted to hide in shame. She quickly reached for the shirt hanging in front of her when she felt two small hands slide around her waist. The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings. "What do we have here?" Izzy''s familiar voice sounded behind her as she whipped around with he fist cocked back but calmed as she realized who it was. "Fuck off, Mate. I need to get dressed." She barke as she turned around, snatching the shirt from the locker. "Damn, what crawled up your ass?" Izzy teased. ¡°Why don''t ya ask your pervy fuckin¡¯ hands?¡± Kas growled as she quickly pulled the plain black t-shirt over her head. ¡°Alright, alright. I¡¯ll see ya back at home.¡± She answered and walked back to her own locker. The locker next to hers clinked and Kas peeked over. Ginger sorted through the locker but Kas caught her staring at her, several times. Kas glared at her, slamming her own locker shut. ¡°What does a cookie like you want with me?¡± She asked. ¡°N-n-nothing. I just wanted to th-th-thank you, that all.¡± Ginger answered, quickly turning away as she faced her locker. Kas raised an eyebrow and squinted at her. ¡°Thank me? For what?¡± ¡°Well¡ you showed me that I need to have more confidence in myself, and to stop being such a coward, and how I should learn to calm down, and you started to teach my to fight. I mean, I''ve studied fighting a lot before but I¡¯ve never put to practice and besides¡¡± Ginger rambled on and on as her excitement built. ¡°Stop, just stop.¡± Kas replied, putting her hand over Ginger¡¯s mouth. ¡°You are welcome. Will you just fuckin¡¯ stop now.¡± Ginger tried to speak but Kas¡¯ hand got in the way before she quickly removed it. ¡°I¡¯m sorry. Sometimes I can''t stop once I get excited.¡± Kas scoffed as she listened, but quickly reached for the long black yoga pants in front of her. ¡°It¡¯s fine cookie girl, just try to relax though, alright.¡± she replied, dropping her pants and stepping out of them. ¡°Ya know for a cookie, you really caught me with me pants down.¡± Ginger giggled as she watched her remove her pants. ¡°Yeah, I seem to do that a lot. Everybody says I should have more confidence but I just can''t seem to work up the courage. When my adrenaline starts flowing, I¡ get scared.¡± ¡°It¡¯s called fight or flight, mate. Flight is for losers, so remove the L and fight instead.¡± Kas replied as she pulled her clean pants up. The girl next to her simple go quiet for a moment as she stared forward. ¡°You¡ are¡ right but it''s not that simple. Not all of us are fighters you know.¡± ¡°In this world there are only two things that matter. Fight or die. You just need to decide which you are gonna do.¡± Kas explained as Ginger quickly got quiet again. Kas finished changing clothes and walked out of the room. Just as she stepped into the hallway, she heard a voice behind her. ¡°Hey, Kassie!¡± Jackson called out as he jogged up to her. ¡°Yo, Jacko. What''s up?¡± ¡°So, some of us are gonna hang out at my place in a couple of hours, you wanna tag along?¡± He asked as a soft, small grin complimented his rugged chin. Her face lit up but she held back, refusing to show her true emotions. ¡°Y-your place? Like¡ where ya live?" Kas asked. "Yeah, where else would I mean?" Jackson asked back with a grin and a raised eyebrow. "Sure thing, Mate. Text me the address." She answered as glee coursed through, barely containing her excitement. "Yeah, definitely. I''ll let you know later on when I know a time." He replied. "Until then, catch ya later Kassie." he waved a casual two-finger salute as he walked away. A smile crept onto her lips, slowly stretching from ear to ear as he rounded the corner. Without a moment to lose, she quickly found her locker and swapped out what she needed for homework. She made a b-line for the elevator and tapped the parking garage button at the top of the panel several times as the doors closed. When they reopened, the waves of vehicles revealed itself but she knew exactly where she parked and headed straight there. As she swung her leg over the seat, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She swiped it open and smiled as the street address of Jackson showed up, plain as day on the screen. She screenshot it quickly before she shoved it back into her pocket and started Rosie, speeding away immediately. The wind blew across her face as her bike sliced through the air. Kas liked driving a bit faster than the speed limit. It matched the speed in her mind. Her thoughts always raced, but this plan to visit Jackson at his home, even with others there, had her mind spun out of control. The next couple hours flew by and she didn''t even stop at home before she found herself pulling up to Jackson''s house. She parked behind an old blue mustang out front. As she approached the front door, she saw Jackson''s familiar beater of a car in the driveway. The white side paneling on the house was bright against the clear, sunny winter sky. She knocked twice on the plain stained wood door and waited. A moment later it opened and Jackson stood in the doorway. A warm smile greeted her. "Hey Kassie, glad ya made it." He said, stepping aside. "Come inside and grab some pizza." Kas quickly stepped in and smiled at him. "Pizza? Fuck yeah, mate." She replied but glanced back outside. "Who drives Eleanor?" "Oh, that''s Dak''s car." He answered, closing the door behind her. That punk really is a spoiled rich kid. She thought but stepped further inside, following Jackson after he closed the door behind her. "C''mon back. Everyone else is already here," he said, leading her into the living room. Dako and Charlotte sat on the sectional couch with several pizzas in front of them on the coffee table. Kas grew a half-smile but tried to hide it as she entered. "Yo, Dako. Where''d ya get that cherry ride outside, mate?" She asked, genuinely curious as to how he would answer. He cocked his head to the side in confusion as he raised his eyebrow. "You want to know about my car? I thought you were more into those rice rockets." "I can appreciate a fine piece of machinery in all forms." Kas replied. "So, where did you get it? I know that thing aint cheap." His face lightened and a short smile found his lips. "My dad gave it to me before I left for the hunter academy." He answered but his eyes dropped to the floor and a frown replaced the smile. "Why''re ya sulkin''? I''d be stoked if my dad gave me a sweet ride like that." She asked. Jackson leaned over to her and whispered. "Dak and his dad aren''t exactly on good terms, Kassie." Kas shrugged and shifted her attention to the girl with neon blue hair sitting next to him. "Hey, pixiedust. How the fuck are ya?" She asked with an almost cheery tone. Charlotte raised an eyebrow at her but smiled, almost giggling. "I''m good, Red. I''d ask you, but you seem to be in a better mood than usual. Not trying to shake the boat but what has you out of your usual sulky self?" Kas shot her a glare but found herself smiling again a moment later. "I dunno, Sparkles. Maybe now that I''m healed up, I''m feelin'' good for once. Is that a problem?" "No no, not at all. Actually it''s a little refreshing." Charlotte answered. "What the hell is that supposed ta mean?" Kas barked, narrowing her eyes. "She means you got a nice smile." Jackson said as he seemed to just appear near the archway into the kitchen. A shade of red matching her hair painted her face and no matter how hard she tried, the smile on her face refused to disappear. Kas tucked both of her hands into the front pocket of her black hoodie as she twiddled her thumbs within. She turned her head away as Dako and Charlotte snickered at her. A moment later Jackson sat down next to her and pulled over two paper plates, each had two slices of pizza on it. "Here, try the pizza, best in the state." He said, sliding one of the plates in front of her on the table. Kas took a deep breath and pulled her hands out from her pockets, facing forward again. "Ya know, Izzy says the same thing, Jacko," she replied, picking up a slice. "About my smile, I mean." She chomped down and pulled back as a bridge of stringy cheese stretched to her mouth. Jackson smiled, taking his own bite. "How''s the pizza?" Both of their attention''s snapped to Dako and Charlotte as their discussion rapidly became heated. "Get real, Char. Men are physically superior to women and you know it." Dako challenged as he flexed his bicep. Charlotte''s eyes narrowed at him. "Dako Williams, are you really gonna go there?" She beckoned popping her knuckle on each hand. Jackson sighed into a light chuckle. "I''ll get the arm-wrestling table. C''mon, Kassie. Give me hand?" He asked as he stood up. Kas raised an eyebrow but stood up. "Arm-wrestling table?" She asked but followed as he led her out of the room and down the hall. "Yeah, that''s how we solve most confrontations over here."Jackson answered. He opened a door and stepped inside. Kas followed him and stoppes in her tracks. The room was filled with a random assortment of items range from an arm wrestling table to a set of kendo training gear to a vast assortment of musical instruments and much more. Jackson stepped behind the table and Kas stood opposite of him. They carried it into the other room where they found Dako and Charlotte sitting at opposite ends of the sectional sofa. A few minutes later the coffee table was pushed aside and their contest platform was prepared. They stood opposed and Dako planted his elbow down first and Charlotte slowly prepared herself, following his lead. Turn The Page The sun shone through the trees. Beams of light cracked through the air like jagged panes of glass. A crimson-gold sparkle reflected off Kas¡¯ eyes as she stared up into the sky. She laid on her back, hands propped up behind her head. The waves of green between the trees became her resting place. Her phone chimed and a deep sigh came from her mouth as she practically tasted the fresh air. She reached for the phone in her front pocket and checked it. [From The Cookie - Hey Kas, hungry? Z&D¡¯s 15 mins, my treat.] [To The Cookie - omw cya in 10.] Without a second through Kas stood up and quickly walked through the trees. She quickened to a jog and stepped through the treeline to find Rosie parked just off the trail. The motor hummed to life and she sped off down the path. It wasn''t long before she stopped abruptly into a parking space outside the burger joint. Kas walked inside and quickly noticed Ginger ordering food at the counter. She quickly stepped behind her and wait as this nerd mad an obscenely large order. Double rodeo burger combo, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers, three orders of large fries, six bacon cheeseburger sliders, and godzilla sized drink cup. Kas¡¯ eyes widened as she quickly realized that the whole order was just for her. She quickly stepped forward and stood next to Ginger, smirking at the cashier. ¡°I¡¯ll have what she¡¯s having.¡± She ordered. The cashier raised his eyebrow and slightly cocked his head. ¡°Which one?¡± he asked. ¡°Everything¡ fuckin¡¯ double the order, Mate.¡± she demanded. He stared down at the cash register and sighed, shaking his head back and forth. ¡°Alright then. Your total comes to¡ $68.54.¡± Ginger swiped her card and paid. As they walked toward a table, Kas grabbed her shoulder. ¡°So, you can really eat all that?¡± she asked Ginger smirked as she raised an eyebrow. ¡°Oh that? That''s just a light snack.¡± ¡°You are fuckin¡¯ with me, right? Ya gotta be.¡± Kas remarked, hoping she was right. ¡°Not exactly. My sister and I used to be competitive eaters.¡± Ginger replied as she took slid into the booth. Kas joined her on the opposite side of the table. She squinted her eyes as she stared at the girl across from her. ¡°You are all full of surprises, ain¡¯t ya?¡± Kas asked. Ginger giggled but smirked back at her. ¡°I¡¯m sure you got some juicy stories. Tell me something about you.¡± ¡°I used to be an actress but that was a long fuckin¡¯ time ago.¡± Kas replied, quickly looking down at the table. Gingers chocolate eyes perked up. ¡°Really? Did you do like drama club or something?¡± Kas sighed but looked up from the table. "It''s a long story and it ends bloody. Short version, when I was a kid I used to act on a tv show. I lived in Australia, but we came to Hollywood for filming." "Wait, seriously? Were you like¡ famous?" Ginger asked as stared at Kas bewildered. "I was getting there but¡ well let''s just say, we all have reasons for becoming hunters. right?" Kas replied with a long face. "Order 32 is ready." A voice echoed from across the dining area. The voice came from the man at the counter and he had a huge mound of food between three trays. Ginger looked up and smiled. "That''s us. I''ll be right back." She stood up and walked over to the counter. Kas just dropped her head again, closing her eyes and slipped from consciousness. She snapped back abruptly as clack of the plastic trays hit the table. "You okay? Looked like I lost ya for a moment there," she replied. "Yeah, yeah. I''m good. Just remembered something I was tryin'' ta forget. That''s all." Kas answered. She shifted her attention to the food and chomped into a slider, shoving several fries in her mouth in the process. Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings."I getcha. Well, what''re ya drinking?" Ginger asked, grabbing both plastic cups. Kas took another bite but peered over at her. ¡°Put half ice, then do half Dr. Pepper and half Coke.¡± ¡°Sure thing.¡± she answered and quickly turned on her heel, walking away. The two of them devoured their meal but when their phones chimed, Ginger checked immediately and saw a text from Jackson. ¡°Mr. Fisher says he needs us to meet him in twenty minutes.¡± she said, glancing over at Kas. She raised an eyebrow and swallowed her mouthful of food. ¡°Mr. Fisher? Why ya bein¡¯ so formal about ole Jacko?¡± ¡°He is our teacher and commanding officer.¡± Ginger explained. ¡°Trust me, he doesn''t care about titles and all that bullshit. Just stick ta first names, alright mate.¡± Kas replied. She checked her phone quickly and got the address as she stood up from the table. "Alright, let''s go, Cookie." She left the table and walked outside. Ginger lingered behind to clean up their mess but Kas didn¡¯t care to wait. So, she quickly started up her bike and sped off down the road. Jackson had ordered that they meet him in the next town over. Luckily it wasn''t far away. That seemed to be the benefit of small towns. One was never far from the other. The cool wind on her face wasn''t very comfortable but Kas figured she would get used to eventually. Before long she pulled up to the address given to her by Jackson and parked next to a familiar shiny, blue mustang. ¡°Pixiedust and her pet Dako must be here early too,¡± Kas said. ¡°He does have a nice car though,¡± When she stepped inside the building a hotel lobby greeted her. Though, strangely enough it seemed to be empty outside of the receptionist behind the counter. Kas walked up to the counter but before she could ask anything, the woman spoke. ¡°Are you here for the Fisher party? Fisher party? It seems kinda quiet for a party. Kas raised her eyebrow. ¡°Yeah, I believe so.¡± ¡°I assume you must be Miss Bellrose then.¡± she replied. ¡°Yeah, that¡¯d be me, mate.¡± ¡°Right this way please, Miss Bellrose.¡± ¡°Just call me Kas, alright.¡± ¡°Of course, my apologies¡ Kas.¡± The receptionist replied and lead her to a large double door. The entrance popped open and Kas looked back to see Ginger panting as she stood in the doorway. ¡°Kas, what the hell? You just left me there.¡± Ginger complained, stomping toward them. ¡°And you must be Miss Snapp, correct?¡± the receptionist asked. Ginger stopped and her eyes widened. ¡°Uh¡ yeah. Who¡¯re you?¡± she asked in confusion. ¡°I¡¯m Stacy Huchins, the receptionist here. You are expected. Right this way.¡± she answered and pushed the large double doors open, revealing a long hallway. ¡°It¡¯s room 4A. That''s the second door on the right. Mr. Fisher is expecting you, the others are already inside.¡± ¡°Alright then. Thanks, Sunflower.¡± Kas replied to the receptionist. Ginger leaned in next to Kas and whispered. ¡°Sunflower?¡± she asked. ¡°Yeah, did you see how yellow her goldie locks and dark brown eyes. Reminds me of a fuckin sunflower, mate. Get it?¡± Kas whispered back. ¡°OH! You are more clever than you look. No wonder you are the top of the class already.¡± Ginger said, smiling as she adjusted her glasses. ¡°Whatever. Let''s go, Cookie. Jacko and the wonder twins are waitin¡¯ for us.¡± Kas replied and stepped through the door. Ginger quickly followed behind her, nervously shuffling behind her. Kas found the door reading 4A and opened it, stepping inside. There was another short hallway with another door at the end and when Ginger stepped inside, the door locked behind them. A low pitched whirling rumble echoed around them and bright green beams fanned over them several times. ¡°Looks like Jacko is havin¡¯ a fuckin¡¯ rave instead.¡± Kas blurted out as a smirk appeared on her face. When the light show stopped, she let Ginger through the other door and revealed a small meeting room. Jackson, Dako, and Charlotte all sat at the end of a long boardroom-like table. Jackson looked up when they entered and waved them over. ¡°Come sit down. I need to explain the details of your mission immediately. Something To Believe In The grind of gravel under Kas¡¯ boots crunched. Ginger walked along side her and they both approached a small group of children in the distance. ¡°What the fuck are we doin¡¯ goddamn Community Service for? We¡¯re not fuckin¡¯ inmates, are we?¡± Kas groaned as she dragged along. Ginger let out a deep sigh. ¡°Because Mr. Fish--, Jackson assigned us a job. I for one am look--.¡± ¡°Are you always this chipper? Can¡¯t ya just complain about¡ anything, just for once?¡± Kas complained as she glared at her partner. ¡°Besides, why the hell do Pixiedust and Dako get to have all the fun. Jacko sent gave us¡ US, of all people, the therapy job.¡± ¡°What you see as chipper, I see as motivated. Let¡¯s just get the job done, alright?¡± Ginger demanded. ¡°Fiiiine.¡± Kas replied and took a deep breath. "Jacko said they would be right outside when we got here. Let''s go see the rugrats." She straighten up her posture and smiled as they walked up to the group of kids. A group of four kids sat on a bench outside of the social services office. Kas pulled down her hood and smiled at them. Most stared down at the concrete sidewalk but one look back at her. A half-hearted smile was on her face as she weakly waved. The look in her pale grey-blue eyes took Kas by surprise. It reminded her... of herself. Death, loss, and internal agony pulsed through her. The misery was poor disguised as Kas knelt in front of her. "Hey, munchkin. What''s eatin'' you?" Kas asked. The girl''s eyes widened for a moment but drooped back so their original depressed sag. "Hello. I''m Maggie," she answered but leaned forward and gripped Kas'' hand surprisingly tight. She pulled her in close and whispered. "I don''t really wanna upset the others by saying it. Is that okay?" she said but released Kas'' hand and pulled away. "It''s okay if you don''t want to mention what happened. You can call me Kas and this cookie is Ginger. " Kas said as she point back with her thumb. Ginger smiled and quickly waved at the girl. "What good will talking about it do anyways, huh Mags?" One of the boys growled. "It won''t change that my parents are dead." Maggie shushed him and held her finger to her lips. "Stop it, Arthur! You are gonna upset Emily and Michael." "Who freaking cares? Look at them. They aren''t gonna feel any worse." He whined. Kas locked eyes with hil with a harsh glare and suddenly he went silent. "Okay then let''s just say it. Your family''s were killed by monsters. Monsters are real. What does that mean for you?" She snapped, never dropping her stare on him. "Kas! What are you doing?" Ginger shouted in surprise. "Chill out, Cookie. Just fuc--, just trust me goddamnit." Kas barked back, still holding her eyes forward. "Alright, fine then." "So, what is it kid? What does all that mean to you?" Kas asked. The boy''s fear was evident and he stared silently for a moment before tears began to roll down his cheeks. "My family is gone! I''m alone! What am I supposed to do?" Kas leaned forward and wrapped her arms around him, letting him sob into her shoulder. "Look here Arthur." she said and looked into his tear stained eyes, "You don''t look very alone. You got Maggie, and Emily and Michael, right? Why don''t you all stick together? Having friends makes things easier, kid." ¡°But--¡± ¡°No buts. Family don''t end in blood. You need to learn that sooner rather than later,¡± she explained and ruffled his hair between her fingers. ¡°Are you guys hungry? What do ya say? Let¡¯s all go get some lunch.¡± Ginger said and all the kids perked up, giving her a wide smile. Even Kas grinned as the kids all jumped up. ¡°Yeah, let''s get some grub. Where do you kiddos want? Anything you want.¡± Kas announced. ¡°Pizza!¡± ¡°Nachos!¡± ¡°Burgers!¡± ¡°Crawfish!¡± All four shouted together. ¡°I heard burgers, let''s go. You guys ride in Ginger¡¯s car, I¡¯ll meet you all there on my bike.¡± Kas replied. ¡°Where are we even going?¡± Ginger asked. ¡°Who asked for burgers?¡± ¡°Me.¡± Emily said as she shyly raised her hand. ¡°Where is your favorite burger?¡± Kas asked as she knelt down to face her. ¡°Really anywhere will do. I like all the places around here.¡± She replied. ¡°But where is your favorite place to get a burger?¡± Kas asked and held both of Emily¡¯s hands together. ¡°Uh¡ I think¡ if i had to pick, I think Zach & Dave¡¯s has the best burgers.¡± ¡°Hell yeah. Good pick, Em. Zach & Dave¡¯s is the best thing about coming to America.¡± Kas claimed as she tugged Emily along with her. They jogged toward Kas¡¯ bike and Emily stopped in her tracks the moment she saw it. Her eyes bounced up and down as she watched Kas mount up. ¡°C¡¯mere. You can use Izzy¡¯s helmet.¡± Kas plopped the clearly too big helmet on the girl¡¯s head and pulled the straps tight. ¡°I think that¡¯ll do, won¡¯t it Em?¡± She asked as she pulled her onto the bike behind her. ¡°Just hold on tight, okay? I''m serious. Don¡¯t let go.¡± With those words, Emily wrapped her arms around Kas¡¯ waist tight as a vice. Kas flinched slightly, surprised at the girls strength. The other kids piled into Ginger''s car and Kas led them out of the parking lot. Emily held on very well as Kas sped down the road. She made sure not to go too fast with a kid riding with her but her inner speed demon couldn''t help but to push those limits. You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version. It wasn''t long before she found the nearest Z & D''s. Kas parked Rosy out front and smiled when she felt Emily''s grip weaken. "Are we there?" The small girl asked. "Take a whiff. Do you smell that?" Kas asked in reply. Emily sniffed hard into the air and instantly released Kas. "Oh yes! We definitely are." Emily announced as she quickly jumped from the back of the bike. A moment later Ginger pulled up and parked next to them. All three kids poured out of the car and surrounded Emily. They all babbled incoherently but Kas could see they were jealous about her riding on the motorcycle. Ginger stepped out of her car and smiled at them. "Alright kids, if you are hungry, get inside." She announced and without a second word, they all straightened up and followed Kas and Ginger in. With a mountain of greasy food piled on the table in the booth seat, all five of them stuffed their faces. Kas and Ginger both sat back and paused their feast as they watched all three kids have their first foodgasm. A notification chimed on Kas¡¯ phone. It was a text from Jackson. [From Jacko - So, how¡¯s it going with the kids?] [To Jacko - I just gave them enough saturated fat to put an army into cardiac arrest. I think they¡¯ll be alright.] [From Jacko - Good, Good. I¡¯m glad you guys are having a good time.] [From Jacko - If everything is under control over there¡ would you be able to meet with me? I gotta talk to you in person about something.] [To Jacko - Right-o. What¡¯s the address?] [From Jacko - Tackle and Bait shop, down on the docks.] [To Jacko - I¡¯ll let Ginger know and be right over. 15 mins tops.] [From Jacko - I know how you drive, see ya in 10.] [To Jacko - Challenge accepted. be there in 8.] Kas turned and faced her currently partner. ¡°Yo, Cookie. Get these kids some dessert and take ¡®em back to the office. Jacko needs to meet up with me,¡± she spat out, slipping out from the bench seat. ¡°Uh yeah, sure thing, Kas¡ Everything okay?¡± Ginger replied. ¡°Yeah it''s all good, but I¡¯m on the clock.¡± Kas answered as she quickly threw a wad of money onto the table in front of Ginger. ¡°That oughta cover everythin¡¯. Later kiddos, enjoy.¡± ¡°Bye, Kas.¡± All three said in unison. Emily ducked under the table and dashed over everyone¡¯s feet. She burst out and wrapped her arms around Kas¡¯ waist ¡°Thank you so much.¡± Emily said, her voice muffled as her face is smashed into Kas¡¯ stomach. Kas flinched slightly but quickly smiled, hugging her back. ¡°It¡¯s alright, Em. Don¡¯t be thankin¡¯ me. Just enjoy the food and stick close to your friends. That''s all the thanks I need but now I really need to go kiddos. Byyyye.¡± She replied and spun on her heel, booking it for the door. She hopped onto the bike and skipped putting her helmet on as she revved the engine to life. Kas cranked the throttle and sped out of the parking lot. Her mind raced just as fast as Rosy. The sights in this town blurred as she zipped around and eventually parking at the docks near the edge of town. Jacksons matte black beater of a car was parked nearby so she hopped off her bike and stepped out onto the moderately busy wood dock. Jackson sat at the edge, his feet dangling in the water. She walked up behind him and smirked. "What''s up, Jacko?" She asked. He quickly pulled his feet from the water and stood up, facing her. "Oh hey, Kassie. Ready to go fishing?" She raised her eyebrow and grinned. "I''m always ready, but is this what you wanted to talk about?" "Not entirely. Let''s shove off and talk on the water. We need a little privacy." He explained as he stepped into the small motor boat hitched to the dock post. Without a second word, Kas hopped in and sat down at the front and stared back at him. He pull started the kicker motor and hummed to life. He drove her upstream to a nice little island in the middle of the river. "Where are we, Jacko?" She asked but couldn''t help cracking a smile. He stepped out of the boat and reached for her. "I''d really rather show you." He said and she grabbed his hand, stepping from the boat onto the sandy shore. He led her to the other side of the island where a blanket was laid out with a basket. A couple of lawn chairs and fishing poles were set up nicely closer to the shoreline. "What the fuck is this? You even got one of those cliche red and white checkered blankets. Is this one of your famous fishnics?" She asked, pleased and grinning from ear to ear. "Sure is, Kassie. Why don''t we take a seat and catch some dinner." He replied, softly smiling back at her. A moment later they sat down and casted their lines. "So, I did invite you out here for more than fishing." He said. "Spit it out already. I''m dyin'' to know." She demanded. Jackson chuckled at her. "I want to make you our team''s first captain. We have a mission tomorrow and I want you at the top of your game." He explained. Kas remained silent for a moment bjt eventually found the words. "W-what, Jacko? You want me to lead?" "Yes I do. I''ve seen what you accomplished with Ginger and it''s amazing. Ginger has been so closed out and quiet for the past few months but you have really helped her open up." He answered. "I punched her in the face and we started talking. I haven''t done much." Kas said. Jackson sighed and chuckled again. "You have done far more than that, Kassie. That one punch wouldn''t have the same impact from anybody else. You are special in more ways than one but regardless, I have assigned you a job. It''s up to you to complete it." He explained. Kas nodded at him bit remained silent as she felt a tug on her line. "There was one other thing--" he began to say but his phone chimed, interrupting him. "Oh wow, it''s Chris. I haven''t talked to him since¡ ah well nevermind." He looked over to Kas and frowned. "Sorry, Kassie. I gotta cut this short. I need to go talk to an old friend." Kas returned her face to her normal scowl but nodded to him. They stood up and reeled into their lines. Kas quickly picked up the blanket and basket as Jackson carried the fishing gear and chairs to the boat. The ride back was silent but Kas immediately tied the boat to the dock when they approached. She jumped out and Jackson followed her. When they arrived at their vehicles he turned toward her one last time. "Well, your first duty as team leader¡ keep an eye on the others and make sure they all get home as a decent hour. We are leaving first thing in the morning." He ordered and sat down inside the car. Kas smiled at the thought. She loved the idea of being a leader, she hated taking orders anyway. Her phone chimed with a text from Ginger. [From Cookie - Kaaaaaas. What does Jackson want? I''m insanely curious] [To Cookie - He made me team leader. We need to round up Pixie and Dako. We got a real mission tomorrow.] [From Cookie - OMG, really? A real mission?] [To Cookie - Yup. Now mets find the rest of our team.] [From Cookie - You got it Kas!] After a series of text messages, Charlotte and Dako were clued in. Kas left town and headed back home. The wind rushed through her hair and washed over her face as the night rapidly cooled the air. Rosy flew into the already open garage and Kas stopped quickly. A long sigh slipped from Kas¡¯ mouth as she dismounted the bike. The gravel outside the garage crunched under her feet until she found the stepping stones. When she opened the door, Izzy sat inside on the couch eating from a carton of ice cream. ¡°Butter toffee?¡± Kas asked as she barely peeked over at the frozen treat. ¡°Cookies n Cream, Mate. In honor of your new bestie¡ Ginger.¡± Izzy answered before shoving another huge spoonful into her mouth. Kas chuckled at the comment but continued toward the hallway. ¡°You enjoy ya self, Iz. I¡¯m fuckin¡¯ beat. Time ta hit the hay.¡± ¡°G¡¯night, Kas.¡± ¡°Night, Iz.¡± Kas replied. She walked down the hall and opened her door. Something didn''t seem right but Kas immediately knew what was wrong. She let out a loud whistle and instantly she heard the click of claws happily tapping the hardwood. Blaze came in and hopped onto the bed, waiting for her as she closed the door behind him. ¡°G¡¯night, Mutt. Keep me warm, alright?¡± She asked as she climbed into bed next to him. He cocked his head to the side and whimpered at her but plopped on top of her, resting his head on her stomach.
