《Conception》
Prologue
Deep within the confines of the Amazon Rainforest, something quite unusual could be noticed. It was quiet. Not what one would expect of such a lively place. It was as if each and every living being in the area had mysteriously disappeared. They hadn¡¯t of course, the origin of this deafening silence could be attributed to an incredibly loud popping noise that rang out roughly 15 seconds before.
This was the reason most of the present creatures had effectively gone into stealth mode. Most being the operative term. The exception to this rule could be found at the origin of the sound. A sludge like substance with a hue not too dissimilar to crude oil was splattered against seemingly every surface in the immediate area. Contrary to silly things like common sense, this was a single living being. And it was silent for a completely different reason.

The slime was attempting to process the sudden influx of information. Being snapped into existence can be a rather jarring experience after all. It had no idea where it was, what it was, or how it had gotten to this place; but it eventually decided how to start unraveling these mysteries. The sludge slowly began to creep its way towards a midpoint, eventually coagulating into a shiny black blob.
After the initial disorientation had worn off, which was seemingly facilitated by it¡¯s more localized state, it decided to do one of the only things it had seemingly come here knowing.

Though the slime could not actually read what the strange symbols said, it was still able to get the gist of it. The meaning was more or less beamed into it¡¯s mind along with the text itself. That being said it still did not understand everything. It understood that the words under the Skill Section were things that it was able to do, but their actual function was a mystery. It decided to focus on one of the words.
[CONGEAL]
To the slime¡¯s delight, this yielded results.

¡°Brbbrbbrrrrbrbbrbbbr¡± the slime happily gurgled
It had taken about 5 hours of playing with the congeal skill to accomplish. This mostly entailed slithering it¡¯s way up trees, splattering itself onto the forest floor, and regrouping it¡¯s biomass. In the process it managed to bring said skill up to level 3, making it far easier to coalesce, and frankly much easier to move around in general.
Apparently even beings composed entirely of liquid could get stiff just like any other creature.
Wondering what to do next, the slime decided to play with the skill it was most curious about. It picked a spot it deemed worthy of targeting and evoked the skill.
[SHOOT]
The spot it selected also just so happened to coincide with the head of a spider monkey that had been curiously watching the spectacle. A stream of water jetted out of its gelatinous surface, spraying the off guard monkey hard enough in the face to knock him backwards. Try as he might, he failed to grab on to any branches or vines, falling just over 30 feet before making a dull thud on the forest floor.

!!!
This sudden spike in experience left the slime with a general sense of what the fuck just happened. The contrast of 5 hours to reach level 2 and 30 seconds to hit level 3 was jarring to say the least. And what was with those strange notifications. Thanks to the telepathic nature of the notifications it understood that they were alerting it of the damage it had inflicted upon the weird hairy creature, but it couldn''t quite figure out why the system would alert it of such a thing.
At a loss the slime made its way over to the freshly deceased monkey to investigate. The first thing it noticed was the weird red stuff coming out of the thing. Even though this was the first time it had ever seen an animal it was still able to recognize the leaking appendage as a head thanks to its monstrous instincts. Said instincts were also likely why it had subconsciously aimed for the area it did.
Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
Naturally the monster''s next course of action was to taste the red substance it identified as blood, immediately followed by the body itself. To say it found this flavor pleasant would be like calling the sun hot, this unexpected pleasure made it quite literally vibrate with delight.
By this point even a being as simple minded as this new born slime was able to make the connection that killing things was an incredibly lucrative source of experience and proficiency, not to mention a great chance to consume more of those yummy things.
Not one to plan or hesitate, it immediately shot up into the canopy and surveyed the area for potential targets. As it turned out there were quite a few, it spotted 3 more of the hairy things grouped together, several strange winged creatures of various colors and sizes, and a long green thing. This was rather easy considering it did not see in the traditional sense, like all slimes it more or less had a spherical field of vision that did not care about silly things like camouflage or even solid surfaces for that matter. More or less it had a perfect 3D model of everything within a 10 meter radius of itself, quite a useful ability in combat.
Not privy to what had just taken place below, the group of spider monkeys were quite startled by the appearance of the black goop and decided to make a run for it. This was the right move as the monkeys were undoubtedly faster than the slime, or at least it would have been if not for two things. Seeing an opportunity to strike the snake that had been disguising itself as a vine wrapped its strong body around one of the escaping monkeys with blinding speed, constricting it completely before the creature could even register its presence. The remaining 2 monkeys did not even have time to register this, as a powerful level 3 shoot skill hit one of them in neck hard enough to throw its head back with enough force to tear the muscles and break some vertebrae. A second shot soon accompanied the first aimed this time at the final monkey, but it dodged... The stream was fast but unlike the slime''s previous targets this one was not caught off guard. It had seen the skill and thus the element of surprise was ruined giving it the chance to quickly scamper off out of the slime''s perception radius.

Now, onto the next order of business. The snake was still in the process of squeezing the life out of the monkey it had caught. And although the slime was not happy to have one of its targets stolen, it could also tell that this was not an opponent to be taken lightly. The slime recognized the speed it had displayed earlier as a dangerous weapon, not to mention the fact that it could quite literally see the 6 feet of pure muscle that allowed it to perform the feat.
Despite all this, it was relatively unperturbed since it was not yet familiar with the concept of fear and despite the opponent''s powerful body and impressive speed this hardly seemed like a threat to a creature with total immunity to blunt force. It shot a beam of water at the snake''s head which was quickly dodged thanks to its flexible nature. Learning from this miscalculation it prepared to fire another shot at the section of snake that was coiled around the now dead monkey.
That was when it suddenly noticed something strange, the long green thing''s muscles seemed to have subtly thickened at some point in the last 3 seconds. A creature that relied on sight would not have been able to pick up on the minute change, but the appearance of several new muscle fibers along with the timing was quite relevant from the slime''s perspective. The beginning of this 3 second time frame was punctuated by the untimely death of one unfortunate spider monkey. Leading the slime to a conclusion.
It''s opponent had just leveled up.
And although the slime did not know it yet, this was the beginning of a new era for life on earth.
Learning The Hard Way 2
The snake allowed the monkey''s body to fall to the jungle floor, this weird black blob was not an opponent it could face on a full stomach. It did not understand why the blue boxes were appearing in its mind, but it put those thoughts aside and chose to focus on the problem at hand before it delved into that mystery. The Boa quickly slithered into striking range of the slime, sinking in its fangs while coiling around it.
| Your target''s biomass has been drained
-46 HP |
The slime''s body leaked out of the gaps in the snake''s hold, which was unexpected to say the least. It had never dealt with a liquid opponent before, But the psychic imprint from that last notification allowed it to understand that although it''s constriction did literally nothing, the bite did.
| draining bite (passive) |
| prerequisites: be a level 1 snake |
| Description: The user syphons Blood or appropriate substitute when fangs pierce the target''s skin.
Damage dealt depends on the target''s constitution, size, and remaining blood.

With the advent of the Boa''s status came the advent of a skill. The slime''s adversary was now uniquely equipped to deal with the creature. and it would use this new found method of damaging the slime to its fullest extent. The snake thrust its head at the slime like a rapier, quickly piercing it''s surface and dealing an additional 33 damage before the slime was able to wriggle free of the boa''s fangs. The snake wasted no time in repeating the process a second time, cleaving an additional 30 HP from the slime''s rather generous reserves. But by the third strike the slime was ready for it and managed to completely dodge the snake''s thrust.
Realizing that it needed a new game plan, It opted to reattempt the constrict and bite strategy this time focusing on restraining the slime rather than crushing it which proved to be a good move, as the slime had difficulty seeping its way out of the snake skin bundle. The boa''s fangs took residence in the slime''s body once again and now it was only a matter of time before the slime was completely drained leaving the snake with two meals for the price of one.
Unfortunately this would not happen.

-244 HP |
The slime shot a jet of water right down the snake''s throat. which as one may imagine hurt like hell, the boa subsequently flipped its shit, crushing the slime hard enough to make its biomass spray out of the tiny gaps in the boa''s grip. The fountain slime quickly recollected itself and made its way back towards the snake.
This was bad, one more hit like that and it would most likely die. with biting off the table the snake quickly pieced together a new strategy more so focused on keeping that thing the fuck away than on combat. The snake''s opponent leapt at it and was summarily whipped apart by its tail, breaking into 2 smaller pieces while the portion of its body that was directly hit rained down onto the forest floor below.
| Your target has suffered a minor loss in usable biomass
-27 HP |
The 2 pieces of slime quickly merged into one and some of the larger slime puddles on the ground began slithering up the tree. The main body shot a beam at the snake which merely glanced off of the hard scales covering its body dealing a grand total of 0 damage thanks to another skill the boa was granted in the form of impact resistance. It realized that the best way to win this battle was to wait it out. It was confident that the slime could not damage its external body with those blasted jets of water, and that seemed to be the only method of ranged attack it possessed. The slime also seemed to be worse for ware as it was significantly smaller than it had been at the beginning of this fight. The only thing the snake had to do was prevent it from getting close enough to do whatever it could at close range.

The slime jumped at the boa for a second time, and was met with another tail whip. This time merely being thrown away, the boa''s slippery opponent had seemingly grown harder during the intermission between the 2 attacks. It came back for a third time once again being knocked back by a tail strike, and then a fourth, and a fifth, and then a twentieth.
As the snake watched it wind up for a 21st rebound in this infuriating game of volleyball it was suddenly rendered blind and could not breathe. it struggled flailing its long body around incoherently suddenly deprived of its senses for seemingly no reason. Just as it seemed the situation could not get any worse the weight on its head grew tenfold.
While the main portion of the slime''s body had been occupying the boa the usable portion of biomass that had fallen to the ground earlier got into position. It waited for the perfect moment to strike, just as the snake had waited for the monkeys to draw near enough. And as the boa prepared itself for the main body''s next strike, it pounced, covering the snake''s eyes, mouth, and nostrils, trying its best to prevent it from breathing, the main portion joined in crushing all chances the snake may have had of breaking free of the mini slime. This was the end, but the boa would not go down without a fight.
The snake bit down inside of the slime''s allowing it to begin syphoning off HP immediately dealing 86 damage thanks to the target''s reduced size. It seemed to the boa that this would be a battle of attrition, both parties had lost large chunks of their HP during the fight so it was only a matter of time before one of the 2 parties succumed to their injuries; however, In its futile attempt to stop the inevitable the snake had managed to forget the consequences of biting this tenacious slime.

You died. |
This was the snake''s final thought as its soul was claimed by an unseen force and it''s body went limp falling unceremoniously to the earth below.The slime bubbled with joy as it descended from the canopy, eager to enjoy 2 of the hairy things and the "snake (boa)" as the kill notification had called it. As to why the system had specifically named this creature and not the other 2 beings it had killed it had no idea.
Without further delay it gorged itself on the 2 monkeys, even though it still had 298 HP left over from the fight, it was running dangerously low on biomass. the 2 appetizers hit the spot allowing it to regain all the mass it had expended during the fight, it had taken about 15 minutes to fully digest them, and it was now ready to taste test the "snake". It slurped it up like a 6 foot long, muscular noodle and was delighted to find that this too was not only yummy, but arguably even tastier than the hairy things.
As it allowed the snake to join the monkeys as part of its body, it began going over the info boxes that it had ignored while it enjoyed the spoils of battle.

NOT A CHAPTER - Human for Scale
So, I just wanted to give a frame of reference for how the slime''s stats compare to different things in the world, since the numbers don''t really mean anything if you can''t compare them.
But before that a friend of mine who is reading this wanted to know what all the abbreviations on the status screen stood for so I made a little guide
DEX = dexterity (percision/finesse)
INT = intelligence
STR = Strength
BIO = biomass (size/mass)
AGI = agility (speed)

I hope that kind of gives you an idea of where the slime stands in the world.
Ask any questions you may have in the comments and I will answer to the best of my ability.
Hiatus
As you definitely noticed, I haven''t uploaded any new chapters since February. So I would like to make an oficial statement regarding why it''s on hiatus, and how long it will be on hiatus.
It more or less started because I went to visit an online friend for a week. I had expected to continue writing while I was there or when I returned, but then I began experiencing some major health problems regarding my ears which pushed it from my mind completely.
So, why is it still on hiatus when I should have all the time in the world during quarantine? simply put because I suck at writing and don''t think I can do my idea justice with my current skills.
The author''s content has been appropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
In order to get better I have started a new series called "Chamrosh", it has a much looser premise so I believe it will be far easier for me to really sink my teeth in and write. I won''t actually begin releasing chapters on royal road until I''ve written about 10. I''d appreciate if you would check it out as I''m rather proud of what has been written so far.
So, when will this series come back? Most likely some time next year. I''ll also be doing some major edits to the prologue because I recieved a good amount of constructive criticism on it, and naturally this also means some details of the other chapters will have to be changed as well to accomodate the edits made to the premise.
Thank you for your time.
