《Tools of Slaughter: Story of a Human》 Prologue-- Beautiful Monster In the dark ruins, a girl¡ no, a metallic monster sat uncomprehendingly. In the dim moonlight, the girl''s features were illuminated. She had breathtaking sapphire eyes that people said were cold and unfeeling and East Asian features. Her long black hair was filthy, and her body was covered in blood. A terrible stench was etched into the air. Her clothes were in tatters, yet on her skin, not a scratch could be seen. Around her was gore and in the distance, screams of horror could still be heard as terrifying war machines single-handedly destroyed powerful cities. Was she one of them? The sky was cloudy, and the splatters of rain became music as it mixed with the blood. The only trees in the city were gone. She was alone. Everyone she knew was in the rubble that stretched on for miles. They were calling to her. His existence was the only reason she was even alive. She had thought that she would self-destruct once he was gone. That was how successes worked, wasn''t it? Her eyes fell upon an ancient sword that survived the disaster. The Rochester family kept many antiques. It was a good enough weapon; there were jewels embedded into the sword that were the color of his eyes. Twinkling emerald. She scrambled to the sword hurriedly, desperate. Grasping the sword hilt tightly, she swung it unfalteringly at herself; again, and again. The valiant sword slowly grew to become scrap under the constant hammering. The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings. "##*#$!%#^!!!" She cursed loudly, her voice echoing in the silence. She threw away the sword in frustration, her enormous strength causing even more physical weathering to fall upon the pitiful sword. It was strange. She couldn''t feel a thing. She lowered her head to examine the wounds, hoping for a miracle and that maybe blood would gush out of the injury. After seeing the result, she was unsurprised but still mildly disappointed. When the bombs and gunshots hit her, her skin didn''t even twitch. When the people who she lived for shrieked with pain and agony, all she felt was coldness. She didn''t want this, yet she couldn''t feel anything else. What was she thinking, that she was an actual human? No, she just yearned for the affections and feelings that humans had. In the end, what had happened? Because of her yearnings, her "loved ones" had gone to hell. What was she even created for? Memories of her life cascaded like rain upon her, and her head hurt from the bombardment. She could remember everything- from the time he gave her his books to learn to read to the lines in, to his face on the day of his marriage¡- this just made everything worse. The rain droplets that slid onto her face looked like tears; if only they were... If only¡ if only she could start over again¡ she would definitely not do anything extra. Just staying by his side was enough. Do you want to start over? Do you want to become human? A voice whispered in her ears. "YES! Please, I''ll do anything! Please..." The "girl" was in a crazed state and didn''t even have the mindset of wondering about the voice''s identity before unhesitantly replying. In the sky, the cloudy and thunderous sky slowly cleared, revealing a few twinkling, magical stars that seemed the turn the wheels of life itself¡ Ch. 1 : Mad Scientist "He he he, ha ha ha! I''ve done it, I''ve done it!" The man had a head full of white hair streaked with silver cackled as he eyed the line of "humans" that were lined up before him with agitation. He wore a white lab coat that was stained with blood. His face looked of a youthful man but somehow, his movements and aura gave off a wave of madness. He didn''t seem to have that livelihood of a young person. His terrible insanity overtook any other first impression one would have of him. In a room decorated with white tools and furniture everywhere, there was a powerful odor of chemicals and manure. Huge transparent cylindric tanks with human limbs littered around the room, like an exhibition. In the middle of the room was a small clearing, where 7 cyborgs in human skin disrupted the white. The man unbothered by the smells and sights danced around the humans, shouting in delight. "Now, if only the mutants were that successful..." The man murmured to himself in resignation. He tried all sorts of techniques and ways to create mutants, but none had succeeded so far. His father would be so disappointed. What to do... What to do... Suddenly, another young man, his eyes lifeless and dull, knocked on the entrance of the lab and entered. On his white lab coat, a number one was printed on. "Captain, something urgent happened." He spoke robotically. "Can''t you see I''m doing something here Yi?" The captain spun around, annoyed that his moment of celebration had been interrupted. "I am sorry, Captain. A miracle happened. One of the failed mutants woke up." ---------In Country E------ In a spacious and luxurious room, a young man who had "14" on his lab coat and looked identical to Yi was reporting something to a group of high-class men and women that were sitting at an enormous conference table. "He did it? He did it!" An elderly man wobbled on his chair with excitement, tufts of silver hair bobbed up and down on his head. While he wore the most luxurious suit out of the entire group and his belongings reeked of extreme wealth, all of his companions shot him looks of disdain. If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. "Count yourself lucky this time," a tall, charismatic woman dressed seductively in red said in disappointment, her voice laced with contempt. She wore a red mask that covered the upper portion of her face. "Lil'' D, don''t be so disappointed. Are you an idiot? You shouldn''t be surprised. With that monster kid of his, he has his position secured. Let him be happy for a bit." Another man, this time cool and also full of seductive charm despite his face partially covered by a blue mask, spoke with a mocking smile. His mannerisms seemed like a man who treated bars and love hotels as his home. "You''re the idiot, idiot! Stop calling me that." The woman who was code-named ''D'' retorted. She really wanted to smash that ugly face into a pulp whenever she saw him. A tall man wearing a black metallic mask that covered the top half of his face said in a low but commanding voice, "Enough, let''s discuss how we''re splitting the items." He seemed to be the leader of the group. One of his hands fiddled with a projected screen, tapping at the pictures of the success; his thin lips curved barely into a smile. D gave her opinion confidently, "That''s easy, Country A is getting the mutant and all the countries each get one success while we keep the rest. We''ll tell them about the difference in numbers and let them fight it out." "The man that created almost all of the war strategies of battles that Country A had won, the reason Country A remains to be the strongest country in the world... I can''t wait to see him suffer a painful death. Right, S?" She licked her crimson lips in anticipation. "... You didn''t look at my analyses, did you?" came a soft but sharp voice. S was a petite woman with long, curly hair and had brown eyes hidden behind oversized glasses. She didn''t wear a mask, but a disguise. S seemed very ordinary, but she was a very important person in the organization. She was in charge of thinking and decision making, along with the leader, while D and P were the action takers. "No no no, of course not. I would such a thing, my dear." D chortled softly. "Sure. But we shouldn''t only tell the countries about the number of these things the others are getting. It''ll seem too open and suspicious. We should make them think that Country A has gotten so strong as to force us to give them extra items and to shut our mouths." S spoke monotonously. "But S, you didn''t wr- cough... cough..." She always seemed to mess up whenever she goes against S; D grit her teeth and stopped talking. "Hey," P suddenly interrupted, "What were you saying about the plan? How... would that give us an advantage?'''' D regained her former confidence, "Obviously you wouldn''t understand. You''re so foolish!" Bam! The young man slammed the table furiously, "How dare you call ME foolish? You wanna fight?!" He could not remain calm at her provocation. Especially how she defamed him in front of that fat, worthless trash. "So? I do wanna fight!" D raised her fist in defiance. S just stared at the bickering pair in silence. This must be youth, she thought. She then quickly glanced down at the projection in front of her before giving the masked man a signal. The masked man nodded indiscernibly and shot D and P a glare that instantly turned both into meek rabbits. He sat silently for a moment before saying in a quiet voice, "Any objections to the plan?" "No," the three people replied in unison; subconsciously ignoring the rich man, the "most important person in the country E" or so he calls himself; as the man''s beady eyes flickered with hate and despise, though there was a fawning smile glued to his face. Awaken ----In the lab room----- Relief... That was the captain''s first thought. He smiled. His smile only grew wider as he pushed aside Yi and rushed out of the laboratory. However, his joy did not last for long. Just as he neared the room where failures were kept, he felt a wave of dizziness and staggered. The people who were standing in the hallway keeping guard saw this and quickly shouted in an unsurprised tone, " Quickly! Someone bring the pills, Captain fainted again." Just before his vision darkened completely, he saw with the corner of his eyes a young girl who was being dragged forward by some guards. Her mismatched eyes were wide with fear and desperation and her ebony hair was a wild mess, but it didn''t mask her obvious beauty transcended the mortal realm. -------------------------- When Xiaomiao awoke, her entire body was numb with a pain that was slowly fading. Her eyes were open and her head was tilted to the side, but she couldn''t move. In front of her, she saw piles of bodies piled on top of each other. They weren''t bleeding, but some bodies had already begun to rot. The bodies had strange marks on them and the pupils of the corpses were tampered with; some eyes were gouged out while others had no irises at all. There were some familiar faces amongst the corpses, and she was terrified. There was an awful stench of burnt flesh. The scene sent chills down her spine. She tried to scream, but it was as if her vocal cords were frozen. She tried furiously to think. Who is she? Where is she? What did she do? Slowly, memories started to flow in.-- ".....Where....where are you taking me? This isn''t what you promised..." She wheezed, holding back a dry and incessant cough, "what... did... you... feed... me...?" This book''s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience. Shrieks and screams filled the oppressive air. "My eyes..." the girl sobbed, unable to see. "My arms...my legs..." the girl sobbed again, trying to move her limp appendages. "It... hurts..." "... Please... stop... Please... I beg you... please..." ".... mom... sis... I hope you guys will live a long, healthy life..." she mumbled with tears streaming down her face, "without me..." Her head pounded. Her eyes dulled for a moment before lighting up. Then they dulled again. Her family. Since she was alive, she could return to them now, right? They lived in Dazu''s poorest neighborhoods and had sold her to the government for food. It was either her twin sister or her. In the end, she was picked. Doctors determined that she wouldn''t live for long anyway due to an inborn illness. She didn''t blame them, but when remembering their faces, tears threatened to fall. She subconsciously closed her eyes to avoid crying... ... She closed her eyes?! Could she move now? She opened her eyes and flinched at the gore. She straightened her head and became even more frightened. Wires? Thousands of wires of all different sizes and colors were connected to her body. Thank goodness the wires were very long, and she was able to move around. She laid on top of a metal bed with all sorts of equipment around her. It was¡ kind of like some sort of hospital. She and several other young people were in the same position but she was the only person that was awake. Everyone else had skin that was turning green and rotten. ... These people were dead. She suddenly understood, horrified at the realization. People in her village often said that the dead often looked as if they were asleep and at peace since they had died with fulfillment, but these people just looked dead to her. The girl then felt fury, unexplainable fury. These were villages that she grew up with, she was aggrieved at the notion that they were killed mercilessly even before their lives had officially begun. That they left this world without the peacefulness of death that her village had believed in. Then, the girl spotted a shiny surface that was glinting in the brightly lit lights. She sat up with difficulty and strained her neck to see what it was. It was a mirror. She hadn''t seen a mirror in so long. She was nervous. If she was the only person alive in the room, and the corpses were all tampered with, then was there something wrong with her as well? She screamed. She thought she saw a ghost. The mirror was normal, but her facial features were completely not how she remembered them. She became prettier, but it was a kind of artificial beauty, it just didn''t look comfortable. But that wasn''t the scariest part; her eyes were two different colors. Her eyes used to be just gold; everyone in her village thought her a monster. Now, one pupil had turned purple while the other remained a bright gold. Truly a unique pair. Her eyes were so intense that they weren''t comfortable to look at. It wasn''t long before the girl realized that screaming was a mistake. When all of the wires connected to her body dropped like limp noodles, she knew someone had noticed her. Suddenly, four identical young men rushed into the room. They grabbed ahold of her arms and marched out. She was frantic and struggled. "W-where is my family?! Did you at least give them the compensation? You said that I could go back afterward, didn''t you?" However, the men''s eyes were dull, and it was as if they couldn''t hear her voice. They led her down an eerily white hallway, seeming oblivious to her screaming. As the group turned a corner, they finally encountered someone else other than guards. It was a handsome young man with white hair. The girl was from the countryside and thus never saw a head of white hair on anyone else other than the elderly. She was delighted and thought she had found her savior. However, the man swayed unsteadily, and when he crumpled to the ground, the guards surrounded him. The people who were handling her were momentarily shocked, and the girl knew that this is her opportunity. But before she could do anything, something sharp poked into her wrist and her world turned black. A Childs Perfect Birthday Gift -------In Country A------ "You may go." An elderly man with long jet black hair to his shoulders and eyes gray like a cloudy sky watched as a messenger dressed in a white lab coat exited the room. Across from him sat a blond, middle-aged man with olive green irises. They were conferencing about something while drinking some aromatic Darjeeling tea. The first man spoke, amused, "Since when did that old idiot become so generous as to give us two of his most prized inventions? Has he finally decided to side with us?" "Mr. President, regardless of what he thinks, I think this gift will have a huge impact on our economy. An invincible human-like monster at our disposal. Just think about it. " The blond man replied with a smile. He was president Hancock''s best friend and closest confidant. "Oh yeah, Rochester, looking at this mutant reminds me. I haven''t given you a reward for your most recent service, have I? I''ll gift this one to you then. One is enough for the government." Mr. Rochester''s blue eyes widened in surprise. He hadn''t expected such an important thing to be bestowed upon him. But of course, he had had his suspicions. No one would be able to tell what he was truly thinking, but without hesitation, at least on the surface, Mr. Rochester grinned in gratitude. "Mr. President, thank you." .... In the midst of a bustling city that seemed like shades black, silver, and white from afar, there were two places that stood out from the highly technology-based city. Amongst the two, one of them was a majestic white, old fashioned mansion surrounded by clean-cut greenery. It was one of the oldest buildings in the country. It had withstood many revolutions of the nation. The mansion was huge, with four floors that had countless servants bustling about. This is were the Rochester household lived since a century ago.The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement. The current General Rochester''s wife Eyre had preferred real servants rather than robots; and when she died, he hadn''t bothered with changing anything. It might be strange, but the family who lived in the mansion only consisted of four members. General Rochester had two daughters and a son. Today, a little boy with a head of untamed wheat hair and shiny green eyes could be seen jumping excitedly around his father. Beside him stood a tall girl in her late teens with similar but more exquisite features. " Daddy, where''s my present?" His voice was high-pitched and adorable. " Hahaha! It''s in the living room, Carlos." The large man who was deemed the father responded boisterously. Carlos''s eyes sparkled in excitement. Clare and Carol''s gifts had been disappointing. They bought him a bunch of economic and business books¡ how could they!? He could hardly wait to see what his father got him this year to appease his broken heart. " Then what are we waiting for? C''mon sis, let''s go!" He shouted, dragging Carol''s sleeve while running towards the house. The girl rolled her eyes in annoyance but they had also briefly flashed with affection. Mr. Rochester smiled lightly at the adorable scene while he looked up towards the windows of the mansion. His smile grew when he saw a familiar figure leaning against one of the windows. He waved at it, and then followed his two children. In the window, a frail-looking woman in her early twenties with long brown hair and foggy gray eyes stood as she acknowledged her father''s gesture with a slight nod. Her appearance looked weak but one could see the wisdom and depth of her eyes. Her mannerisms were of a person who was tired after living a long and cruel life. Her silver eyes flickered with sadness for a moment; then she turned towards her dark bedroom. .... In the spacious living room, a girl with shiny black hair and mismatched pupils sat on a worn butter yellow sofa. Her eyes wandered over the antique furniture while she wondered to herself, who was she? A golden-haired and blue-eyed man had taken her here using a weird, black running machine with comfy red seats and then just left her in this place. Her memories only started when she opened her eyes to see the weird black running thing and the strange man. Strangely, however, she subconsciously knew that the black running thing was a car and the strange man was a man. Her eyes caught on a pearly vase positioned in the center of the room and lit up. It was white with various simple carvings decorating it. She was fascinated. The girl wobbly approached the vase. A reflection was reflected in it. The person in the reflection was super pretty. Although she didn''t understand what "pretty" meant, she just felt really attracted by the reflection. The strange girl in the reflection had really weird irises; one purple, one gold. The girl became more intrigued. Just who was this person? Just as the girl was about to touch the vase for further examination, the door to the living room opened. The large man who brought her here came in, along with a cute little boy and another pretty girl. Carol was startled upon seeing the strange girl. Her different colored and vibrant eyes creeped her out. She eyed the FN Five-seven* that was displayed on the wall. A Normal Girls Reincarnation Mr. Rochester did not seem surprised to find a stranger in his living room. He introduced, " This is Feixin, a mutant. I''m sure you''ve learned about mutants in class, Carol. It can protect Carlos. He is our family''s heir, he needs a bodyguard, and Feixin is the perfect one for the job." He looked at his son gently. Carlos looked just like he did when he was a child. Carol frowned but didn''t oppose it. She knew how lucky her little brother was. She learned about mutants in school. They are super rare successes out of many failed human experiments. No one has ever succeeded in making a mutant, even though theoretically, it was possible. But since father said she is a mutant, then she must be. This Feixin might be one of the few mutants in the world. Perhaps...from Country C? But it could be Country E as well... Carol quietly speculated about the countless possibilities. When Carlos heard his name, he looked at his father questioningly. " Is she going to be my present, daddy?"His father hesitated, then nodded. Carlos brightened up right away. " What''s your name again? Oh, that''s right, it''s F... ei¡ xi¡? Nah, I''ll just call you Fei from now on. That''ll be your name now. You''re gonna be my playmate right? Yassss! It''s gonna be so cool. Hey, are you going to always stay with me, Fei? I''m sure you will. Daddy says you''ll be my protector. Is that true Fei? You look so pretty though Fei. I didn''t think you could beat up people too, Fei. Fei, are you ever gonna teach me how to fight? Darn, I really wanted to learn martial arts and stuff but Daddy said no¡ Hey Fei, do you know how to--" "Ok, ok. That''s enough Carlos." Mr. Rochester burst out laughing. Fei was overwhelmed. She couldn''t understand a word they were saying. The only words she remembered amongst the overload of words were Fei, and Carlos. " (Feixin, I think you should go with Carlos for now. He will introduce everything to you.)" Mr. Rochester said gently. He pointed at his son. "(Your duty is to protect him.)" Carlos nodded furiously. He grabbed her hand excitedly and rushed through the door without minding his family''s and Fei''s thoughts. in the courtyard, Carlos began explaining and introducing a mansion. He noticed that Fei didn''t seem to react to anything he said. "Hey, do you even understand what I''m saying?" Carlos questioned suspiciously. Fei blinked in reply. " I guess not... well, you do look like a foreigner I guess. do you want to learn English? I''m learning English at school. I''m in 2nd grade now! when you have time, I''ll lend you some of my books to read actually, you know what, I''ll teach you English myself. I have really good grades after all." He beamed in pride. This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it. Fei''s lips curled into a smile at this expression even though she didn''t know why she felt did so. Perhaps... it was happiness? Then, Carlos continued to introduce a mansion to Fei while chattering happily. On the other hand, Fei was amazed by the interior and exterior of the mansion. Numerous white columns surrounded the dwelling and supported a spacious terrace filled with plants. There were huge glass windows with carvings lining their edges everywhere. Flying buttresses outlined the outer walls of the building. The mansion built with an inner courtyard in the middle of it. Lush green grass was spread neatly in the surrounding area. There was a majestic fountain with delicately carved designs in the center of the grass. Birds chirped wildly for space to land on it. Fei was amused. She ran towards to fountain, slipping away from Carlos who didn''t realize that no one was following him anymore. As she approached, the birds became startled and flew away, their large wings creating a slight wind around her. Fei was disappointed when the birds dispersed, but she decided to just see what was so fascinating about the fountain. She stared hard at this mysterious goblet that spurted water into the air. It does look pretty amazing, Fei thought, as she was mesmerized by the flowing of the water. Just when her hand was going to touch the water, another frail hand abruptly gripped her arm. Fei blinked and turned to face a beautiful woman with deep gray eyes and long, brunette hair, dressed in a plain white, long-sleeved dress. ... Eyrie sat by the window, taking in the warm summer breeze. It was unknown how long she had been there; it seemed like she was waiting for something to happen. Two figures walking out of one of the side entrances of the house. Eyrie felt especially nostalgic when she saw that girl with dark, ebony hair following behind her brother. Fei. She hated and loved her at the same time. Should she greet her? No, it''s her fault that she''d been having nightmares every day ever since her rebirth. Eyrie couldn''t get that terrifying scene of watching her entire family die out of her head¡ Who had said reincarnation was cool and advantageous? She really wanted to curse that person. In her past life, she was just an ordinary girl with a naive and kind heart who loved reading fantasy-themed novels. Of course, that genre included rebirth and reincarnation. She had dreamt about those inconceivable things happening to her. Yet when it did happen to her, Eyrie wished to escape from the new life. In her past life, Eyrie met the love of her life when she was 15 and married him at the age of 19. She conceived 2 boys whom she loved dearly. Yet when disaster struck, she saw her children''s looks of disdain and her husband''s sneers before they kicked her out to fare for herself. Her father couldn''t bother to care about his very ordinary daughter. Even in childhood, her importance was undermined by her genius little sister. In this life, she was able to change her fate. But for better or for worse? With her past life''s experiences, she was able to coin the title "prodigy," but the influence of her "intelligence" brought her a lonely school experience and people''s ugly jealousy. If it weren''t for her family''s lofty position, Eyrie knows she would''ve been kicked and abused as a "nerd" before her intelligence was taken advantage of and used. Did Carol live through this as well? Suddenly, the black-haired girl turned around and stared at the central fountain in bewilderment; which snapped Eyrie out of her reminiscence. Eyrie had expected it. Just as she was about to leave the window, she whipped her head back in astonishment. Fei''s eyes were different colors, violet and golden. Before she realized it, Eyrie had run down to the courtyard and soundlessly approached ''Fei''. Her dress and hair flowed in the mild wind. She held in her soreness and panting from running with a struggle. She watched Fei with a murderous glare as the other girl noisily examined the fountain, causing the birds bathing in it to scatter. Right when she attempted to reach into the fountain, Eyrie reached out and gripped her arm with strength and courage she didn''t know she had possessed. Flying Fei shivered, surprised by the cold grip, and turned around in confusion. "(Who are you?!)" Eyrie stared at her threateningly. Fei just stayed quiet, looking at the hand that was still holding tightly onto her. " (You aren''t Fei. Where is she? I know you can understand me. You must be the one who took me here. Why are you doing this? Is it fun for you to torture me like this? Why?) WHY?!.. " It''s been so long since Eyrie could just let all her emotions out; she began tearing up. She was desperate, and finally found a possible person who possibly knows the secrets of this despicable world. A series of footsteps that thumped on the grass woke her up. She quickly wiped away her tears and forced herself to calm down. "Sis Rei, what are you doing here? I heard some screaming, are you guys all right?" An adorable voice sounded. "Um, you must wonder who this is, right? Don''t worry, she won''t harm you. She''s the present Daddy gave me. She is a mutant, sounds so cool right?! Too bad she doesn''t understand English¡ I''m planning to teach her. Hehe." "...You? Teach her? " Eyrie stood with a queer expression, contemplating her little brother''s words. Fei is a mutant? Not a Success? Doesn''t that mean she''s half-human? How...? "Humph, don''t look down on me sis. Even if I can''t teach her, she can always learn with me." Carlos puffed up his cheeks in annoyance. "All right, all right. Let''s go in the house first." Eyrie was suspicious, but there was nothing she could do¡ who would believe that the new mutant that was brought home was a real supernatural creature and that the young genius of the family was a reincarnation of a previous life? She would only be sent to an asylum. In her mind, Eyrie was in a struggle. With the world''s situation changing from her memories of her past life, she felt angry at her own insignificance. It was as if she was being played by a higher being; she had had this feeling ever since her reincarnation. Eyrie could only watch from the sidelines, for she hadn''t achieved enough power to interfere. A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. ... Carlos was very excited and continued showing Fei all around the mansion, chattering happily, despite not receiving any response. However, as a growing kid, he was prone to tiredness, and soon, all of the previous enthusiasm left him, only leaving a blinking and weary child. When the trio walked in a seemingly never-ending window-corridor, Carlos couldn''t take it anymore. " Sis Rie, I-I''m a bit tired... I''m gonna go rest. Fei, you gonna come with me?"Carlos yawned. Eyrie nodded absentmindedly, but when she saw Fei try to go after her little brother, she instinctively grabbed the person''s arm and jerked it back in alarm; her hands were shaking but her eyes were firm. "Carlos, why don''t I take care of Fei for you? We haven''t finished touring the mansion yet. Go back to your room and sleep for a bit." Eyrie gestured for a servant to come forward and escort Carlos back. Carlos didn''t notice his sister''s abnormalities and grabbed the servant''s hand. "Then I''m gonna go. Bye-bye Fei~." Eyrie pulled back her arm quickly from Fei after she confirmed that her brother left her view. "( Your master left you in my care. Please wait here until I come back.)" Her voice shook with the aftershock. Clutching her plain white dress until it creased, Eyrie limped away gradually down the hall, not minding the strange gazes of the passing servants, leaving Fei in uncertainty. Resolving herself, Fei decided to wait for Eyrie by the wall opposite of a grandiose window. The person didn''t seem to be lying to her. Although that woman had screamed at her by the fountain, Fei didn''t feel any grudge nor displeasure, only confused. What was also interesting was that she could understand her, unlike the others who only spoke in a foreign tongue. Fei took this time to think carefully and reflect on her actions since her awakening. .... Time flew, and in a blink, the light from the large white windows turned from white to orange to purple. Fei was in a daze as she witnessed the color changes in the sky and how the sunset while the moon rose. She felt it was fascinating, and multiple times had thought of approaching the open windows to fully appreciate the beauty, but like a cowardly thief, she found herself unable to move. The strange woman had instructed her to stay here, and here she will stay. Her thoughts wandered as she bathed in the moonlight, wondering if her master is just as amazed at day''s changes as she is. She thought of her master''s emerald eyes and thought about how nice it would look against the royal blues of the sky. Stunning. She smiled. "FEI! What are you doing here? I''ve been looking all over for you! I couldn''t ask Sis Rie since she retired to her room, so do you know how worried I was?!" A little boy appeared from the end of the dark hall. His emerald eyes were filled with panic and his delicate golden eyebrows were scrunched up. Master! Fei''s eyes lit up. She took a moment to appreciate her master''s beauty before she ran towards him with superhuman speed. In less than five seconds, Fei crossed what might''ve taken an average runner 25 seconds to cross. She stopped punctually in front of Carlos, and a rush of wind from running at such a high speed crashed into her, causing her hair to fly wildly. The wind however, clearly not pleased from harassing only the perpetrator, also directed its anger at Carlos; blowing up his hair and slapping at his face. Fei was alarmed at the consequences and bowed as a sign of apology. Carlos, however, giggled uncontrollably, and his negative emotions dissipated. He looked adoringly at Fei. Carlos paused for a moment to think about something, and as if he made up his mind, he grabbed Fei''s hand and pulled her away, running like there was no tomorrow. Although it wasn''t nearly as fast as Fei''s speed, he was satisfied. It allowed him to feel the wind caressing his face, like a bird soaring through the sky. The Good Life of a Servant However, Carlos was still a child barely above an adult''s waist. He didn''t have the stamina to run too much, especially since he was pulling a person behind him; even though the said person purposely made herself run at his pace so he wasn''t actually pulling her. Servants who were bustling in the halls gaped at the strange sight and moved themselves to avoid bumping into the pair. Soon, Carlos was panting, his face red and full of perspiration. He stopped in front of a pair of large double doors. Smiling brightly, he raised his head towards Fei. "Hehe. The reason I looked all over for you is because of what''s behind this door." His childish voice imposed a mysterious fortuneteller during a reading of the future. His eyes glistened. Carlos struggled to push open the large, heavy doors. When he finally did manage to open the doors, Fei was stunned by the sight beyond them. The light of glittering chandeliers was blinding. Grand windows opened to the beautiful scenery of the courtyard. Rows of plates filled with aromatic delicacies filled up a grand furnished table covered with a white cloth. This sight alone would be able to satisfy a famished man. Carlos glanced at Fei in anticipation. Whenever his friends came and stayed for dinner, they had always been shocked and full of delight at the almost fairytale-like scene. However, he was bound to be disappointed. Fei showed no particular reaction on her face, despite whatever she thought on the inside. She only bowed to the scrutinizing middleaged man who sat at the beginning of the table and his companion. "Carlos! What took you so long?" The pretty blond girl with green eyes that Fei saw earlier in the day exclaimed, her eyebrows furrowed up. "We were waiting for you." "I brought Fei!" He was all smiles, proud of his achievement. The blond girl glanced at her father, who seemed slightly disapproved, before saying coldly, "Why did you bring it? It''s not as if it has any use here. It''s just a servant." It''s not as if you ever cared about me so much... she muttered under her breath. This story has been unlawfully obtained without the author''s consent. Under the hard stare of his sister, he lost and ultimately burst into tears. The middle-aged man frowned indiscernibly at this interaction, and he said nonchalantly, "It doesn''t matter, Clare. Carlos, know not to cry at every insignificant thing; you''re already a man." He then directed his gaze at Fei. "(Fei, go stand by the wall behind Carlos. You can eat in the kitchen after this hour. A person will guide you,)" he said softly. Fei nodded and stood behind her young master. She closed her eyes to carefully ponder over what exactly was her duty. She can''t recall ever learning to fight, so she wasn''t sure if she could do this job well. Carlos glanced suspiciously at his father. By this time, he had calmed himself and had also finished berating himself for his shameful behavior unfitting of his status. "Daddy, what were you speaking about with Fei? How come I don''t understand a thing?" His father chuckled warmly, and replied, "You''ll understand once you grow older and learn more." Carlos pouted. He hated that his daddy always said this verse whenever he asked him a question. He needed to grow up quickly! He awkwardly sat down in the empty seat. The butler, Marcus, stepped forward and poured a cup of wine in Mr. Rochester''s glass, before he began introducing the dishes that were on the table in a soft voice. There were quite a few exotic foods that he presented, each being very healthy and having a very special way of preparation. There was no cake, however, even though it was the young master''s birthday. Everyone in the room besides Fei knew that the old master wanted his son to mature quickly and did not treat him like a child. As he ate his delicacies, Carlos absentmindedly listened while his family conversed on some political status quo that he didn''t understand. Occasionally, he glanced back at Fei, whose eyes were still closed as if deep in thought. Fei is so pretty, truly just like a doll! Carlos thought wistfully. He thought of dressing her up in all sorts of cute clothing that he had seen on his sister''s doll collection. Clare doesn''t really play with those dolls anymore, so it should be okay for him to take some and get them tailored for Fei. But Daddy might not like it... Well, it''s fine. Carlos secretly pumped up his fist, adding this goal to his ever-extending list of what he wanted to do after growing up. Meanwhile, Fei silently waited for the hour to pass. She was a little anticipating what type of food would await her. ---------- "You filthy seductress! Do you think we don''t know the means that you used to enter this house?" A maid with an unmemorable face cursed as she glared at Fei. "Thank goodness the master still has a conscience and treats you like a servant. A commoner such as you have no right to enter the house of nobles. Even us, the servants, have a noble lineage of serving the upper-class and nobles." Another servant sneered. However, these words that seemed to provoke and hurtful were treated as air by Fei. She didn''t even understand what these people were saying! She continued munching on the piece of whole grains bread given to her. In her hands was a bowl of porridge that contained some pieces of meat and vegetables. All of the servants lived in the basement and ate in the kitchen(also in the basement). Servants can only eat after the masters have eaten. However, servants weren''t all treated the same way. More important positions, such as the housekeeper, head maid, valets, and butler had better food and living spaces. These people ate the leftovers of the masters, but regular servants did not have the privilege normally. Regular servants ate bland food that the chef prepared with minimal resources using the worst ingredients found, as to leave the best for the masters. This didn''t mean the food didn''t taste good or were rotten. It just meant that the food wasn''t as luxurious or chef''s kiss as the food Fei saw during Carlos'' dinner. In fact, an average servant''s palate is pretty good. Life, in general, is pretty good. After all, servants were not overworked, had basic rights, and had food as well. However, it was another matter entirely when all of the servants are turned against you. In fact, you would only need to offend the higher-ups of the servant hierarchy to live much more miserably than your peers, especially the chef or head maid. Gossip Unfortunately, the person who Fei offended was the head maid, Felicia. When the head maid was showing Fei around the basement, she had tried to strike up a conversation with Fei. "Have you ever served before?" "..." "Do you know how to do the basic chores?" "..." "Where are you from?" "..." "Answer me!" "..." This was how the conversation went. By the end of the basement tour, Felicia had given up. She deemed the new servant as stupid and arrogant. After all, which servant wouldn''t respect the person that would be governing you? Only a stupid one and an arrogant one. There was no lack of servants seeking to get on the good side of Felicia, and soon, everyone who served the Rochesters knew that the new maid arrogantly disrespected the head maid. Some servants even lashed out at Fei with exaggerated and made-up claims to gain Felicia''s approval. However, not all servants were fond of doing such deeds. Thankfully, the head chef, Alver, was one of them. He pitied Fei, and as she was also a newly arrived servant, Alver gave her a bit more food than others during her first meal at the Rochester mansion. Unfortunately, this deed with kind motives resulted in even more annoyance towards Fei. Of course, Fei understood nothing. She thought the sneers and ugly looks were normal, perhaps it was her master and the old master that were different. You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version. By now, the servants had finished eating in the kitchen and had started to prepare to take quick showers before settling in bed. There were only 10 bathrooms in the basement, and there were a few dozen servants. As everyone debated over which people were to shower first, Fei stood up and began walking to her designated bed in the other room. One servant saw her walking alone and shouted out in alarm, "Hey! Where do you think you''re going? You''re new, so you have to shower last!" Fei gave him a nonchalant glance before continuing her walk. "Hey! Get back here!" Ignored. The room that Fei slept in was shared with 4 others, 2 people sharing a wooden bunk bed. There was a table in the middle of the room, and a few pieces of folded clothing was placed on top of it. The bedsheets were white and comfortable, but her''s bedsheets were filled with a stinky smell and a moldy feeling. However, Fei didn''t notice at all. When she got in her bed, she quickly fell asleep. In the dark night, countless pieces of gossip had been exchanged about the new maid. Apparently, she not only upset the head maid but the eldest miss of the house as well. Some others speculated that the maid probably of noble lineage since she was too arrogant and didn''t want the shower in the same bathrooms the other servants did. A few servants suggested that perhaps the new maid wasn''t actually arrogant and the reason that she ignored everyone was because she didn''t understand the language, but that conjecture was immediately rejected; after all... it isn''t interesting enough! ---- The next morning, Fei woke up to silence. When she opened her eyes, she realized that the basement was still dark. She looked around and saw the roommate that slept across from her, a young girl with dirty blond hair and average features. Fei sat up and walked out of the room, not making a sound. As she walked down the empty halls towards the nearest stairway, suddenly-- Ding Dong Ding Dong Ding Dong! As the bells rang, the hallways lit up and almost immediately became filled with servants bustling in uniform. Only Fei stuck out like a sore thumb, standing in the middle of the chaos in utter confusion. She frowned and tried to continue going to her destination, but she was held back by a woman in a dark blue suit. It was Felicia. "What are you doing? Quickly, put on the uniform and follow me!" Fei tilted her head. Irked, Felicia shouted at her, "What? Do you want me to dress you? In your dreams. Hurry up!" She pushed Fei into her room before slamming the door in a rage. Fei looked around the empty room before landing her eyes on the clothes on the table. It was the same clothes that some of the other maids were wearing; a navy, long-sleeved shirt with a white collar, and loose navy pants. Enlightened, Fei changed into the clothes that were prepared for her. .... In the main corridor of the fourth floor, Fei stood in line with the other maids as they watched the master of the house, Mr. Rochester, prepare to leave for an expedition. At this moment, even Felicia wore a look of respect. Mr. Rochester wore a formal suit and was looking at an invisible projection in front of him. Occasionally, he would swipe in the air, looking a little comical. Beside him stood his valet. "I won''t be home for a few days, be sure to finish with the paperwork placed in the principal room, schedule an appointment with Mr. L for next week. Understood?" "Thank you for your reminder." The housekeeper, Mary, replied with respect. "Any other instructions, sir?" Mr. Rochester pondered, before resting his gaze on Fei. " Take care of the mutant. Instruct it well. She is from Country C." "Yes, sir." "(Fei, listen to Mary.)" "(Yes.)" Fei looked at Mary, a late-middle-aged woman, who smiled amiably. She nodded in response. Mr. Rochester walked out to the concrete deck that was at the end of the corridor. After waiting for a few minutes, a sleek black helicopter landed on the deck, with a few men dressed in black that stepped out and politely invited Mr. Rochester in. Moving Platforms Hi, guys!
