《The Terminating Spark》 Ch. 0, Pt. 1: Concrete Jungle The tip of a cigarette lit up in the darkness as black eyes gazed at the sky covered in dense clouds. ¨C Full moon night... ¨C the man complained. He was sitting in the backseat of a moving car, slowly cruising through a neighborhood adorned with red-brick houses, brownstones, and converted industrial buildings. ¨C The weather forecast is a joke, ¨C his voice was warm as he gently massaged a pocket of his jacket. ¨C I was hoping for the perfect weather tonight, what a disappointment. Sullen, he stared outside, as the driver seemed to ignore him. His eyes narrowed as he observed figures lurking between alleys and sidewalks; solitary and invisible to society''s gaze. ¨C Like worms in the dirt... ¨C he muttered to himself in disdain. ¨C Oblivious to their own insignificance. The yellow lights illuminated a path filled with nightclubs blasting loud music with deep bass, creating an unsettling sensation. On the street corners, women and men smoked and flaunted their physical attributes. ¨C Freedom Valley, I love this district. ¨C he remarked, watching the women¡¯s low-cut tops and their short skirts revealing more than they should. His statement came with an inciting, almost perverse, smile. ¨C Do you think we can stop for a bit of fun? ¨C Haven''t you had your fill for today? ¨C The driver asked in a deep voice, gripping the steering wheel irritably. ¨C You can never have enough. ¨C the man said, staring at the forced smiles through the tinted window. ¨C Can we stop? The driver didn''t respond; he abruptly accelerated the car. The man''s eyes narrowed at the sudden shift. This book''s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience. ¨C Fine¡ Have it your way. ¨C he said, stubbing out his cigarette on the car seat. The car continued south of the district, finally stopping on the right side of a deserted street, keeping the engine running. The man in the backseat coldly observed a building under renovation. A large sign stood in front, reading ¡®Santa Claudia Hospital Renovation,¡¯ accompanied by an image of a black woman with a welcoming smile. ¨C You¡¯ve got an hour. ¨C the driver declared, looking over his shoulder. ¨C Don''t waste time; the cameras should already be on loop. ¨C Be patient, I won¡¯t take long. ¨C the man said nonchalantly, but his tone shifted to something more sinister as he lit another cigarette. ¨C But keep in mind that I¡¯ll handle the situation my way. He smiled, though the driver didn¡¯t reciprocate, starting a digital timer that displayed sixty minutes. ¨C One hour. ¨C the driver said, tapping his finger for every second that passed. ¨C As always, you don''t know how to savor a meal. The man in the backseat opened the door and stepped onto the uneven asphalt, staring at the building in front of him. He was young, with fair skin and black eyes. His features revealed his Asian descent, and his slender, attractive face exuded charm. He was slim, dressed in dark, tight clothes. His hair was shaved on the sides, while the top was long, thick, and black, combed to the right, with strands falling over his face. ¨C I¡¯ll be right behind you. ¨C the driver said after lowering the front window. ¨C Honestly, there¡¯s no need. I prefer handling this alone. ¨C he replied, closing the door and giving two light taps on the car. ¨C I don¡¯t care about your preferences. ¨C the driver responded, driving off to an unknown destination. ¨C Polite as ever. The charming man forced a smile, crushing his cigarette with his fingers as he watched the car leave. As he approached the construction gate, he noticed broken chains and a padlock discarded on the dirt. There were also signs of ongoing construction, warning signals, and a sign: ¡®Entry only for authorized personnel.¡¯ He looked at the sign and smelled the scent of earth and concrete. Clicking his tongue at the state of his cigarette, he quickly discarded it and stepped on it. Then, he pulled a cellphone from his pocket and glanced at a message containing some random characters, including the number 425. ¨C Well then, to work... ¨C he murmured to himself, slowly entering the building under renovation, putting his phone away as his figure disappeared into the darkness of the place. Ch. 0, Pt. 2: The servant, the mercenary and the executioner The marking on the wall indicated it was the eighth floor, while cables stretched across the floor, connected to construction equipment. Two individuals stood close to each other, partially hidden by the dim lighting. The first was a slender young adult, good-looking, with fair skin and blue eyes. His blonde hair was neatly trimmed, with a few strands falling over his face. He wore designer clothes and golden accessories, rubbing the wedding ring on his finger incessantly. The second was older, with tan skin marked by scars and tattoos of religious symbols. His head was shaved, and he had a neatly trimmed goatee. He wore loose, comfortable clothing: a tight white t-shirt, baggy camouflage pants, black boots, and a silver crucifix. The slender man tapped the sole of his elegant shoe restlessly, checking his gold watch, which seemed to show a few minutes to one in the morning. The dim lighting, composed of construction lamps, made it hard to see clearly. ¨C Why this place? ¨C the slender man muttered, adjusting his tie as if it were too tight. ¨C It was always high-class places, and now this... The hands of his watch advanced incessantly as his eyes tried to make sense of it. ¨C D¨ªa de los Muertos, ¨C he said, shaking his head impatiently. ¨C Why does that influence anything? ¨C The day when the worlds connect; the veil is so thin that you can hear the whispers of death, and if you falter... ¨C said the man with the goatee, who had a heavy Spanish accent, keeping his arms crossed. ¨C She will take you easily. ¨C That''s just stupidity, cheap superstition. ¨C the slender man said, disgusted as he looked away. ¨C We¡¯re only here because this celebration is convenient for the meeting. ¨C Then why are you acting this way? Don¡¯t you trust your contractors? ¨C Of course I don¡¯t trust them, but life is like a chess game. ¨C the slender man replied arrogantly. ¨C And I know I¡¯m an important piece, not just a replaceable pawn. The man with the goatee glanced over his shoulder, observing the constant tapping of the elegant shoe. ¨C You don¡¯t seem so sure of your answer boludo. ¨C the response came with a slight, restrained laugh. ¨C And what do you know about me? ¨C The slender man curled his lips and raised his chin. ¨C And what did you say? Didn¡¯t anyone teach you that in our country, you should speak our language? The man with the goatee turned and stepped closer, placing a hand on the other¡¯s shoulder. Love what you''re reading? He laughed, giving a light slap on the slender man¡¯s shoulder, causing him to lose his balance briefly. The slender man widened his eyes, then lowered his head, massaging his struck shoulder as the man in front of him turned his back. ¨C What do you think? Could something bad happen? ¨C My experience says meetings like this end with people dead. ¨C You must only deal with gangs. ¨C the slender man replied quickly, tensing as he kept his hand on his shoulder. ¨C Things are different in my world than in yours. ¨C Boludo, we live in the same world; money is green, and blood is red. ¨C the bodyguard¡¯s smile, cast over his shoulder, seemed one of satisfaction. ¨C Relax, whitey, because I always get both by the end of the night. Williams found himself speechless for a moment, and a slight breeze entered through the unfinished windows, carrying the almost metallic scent and taste of the construction site. ¨C If something happens, remember to protect me at all costs. Moments later, slow footsteps echoed from the direction of the stairs. The slender man froze completely, taking a deep breath and staying focused. Then, from the darkness, a figure with black eyes began to emerge, revealed by the dim lighting. ¨C Good evening, Mr. Williams. ¨C the newly arrived man greeted the slender man with a friendly smile. ¨C Koji, you finally arrived. ¨C Williams, the slender man, greeted, nodding briefly and positioning himself next to his bodyguard. ¨C Good evening. Koji, the newcomer, coldly observed the surroundings until his eyes met the bodyguard¡¯s. ¨C Could you inform me what this urgent matter is? It''s unusual for you to set up a meeting like this, especially in a place like this. ¨C Williams asked seriously. Koji narrowed his eyes at the question, but the smile never left his face. ¨C I remember telling you to come alone. Could you explain who this guy is? ¨C Koji asked calmly, eyeing the bodyguard. ¨C There was never any need for me to visit Freedom Valley. But I know enough about this district, so I decided to hire a private security guard. Koji slowly moved his hand behind him as Williams spoke. The bodyguard, noticing the movement, carefully watched the man, freeing his arms and clenching his fists. Both Koji and the bodyguard stared at each other with similar expressions: a challenging smile. Then, slowly, Koji pulled out a cigarette pack from his back pocket, took one out, lit it, and briefly smoked. ¨C I see, but why this guy? He looks more like a thug than a bodyguard. ¨C Koji inquired, putting away the used items. ¨C Surely, there are more efficient services. ¨C You shouldn¡¯t involve organizations for just an emergency conversation; after all, they tend to track those who contact their services. ¨C Williams replied, maintaining eye contact with Koji. ¨C So, I figured someone local, just muscle, would be ideal for this situation. The cigarette began to release ash, and the friendly man''s smile slowly faded, replaced by a completely serious expression. ¨C I understand your point, ¨C Slowly, he took a drag from his cigarette, adopting a hateful expression, almost like another person. ¨C but how about this bastard stops staring at me like that! Williams swallowed hard at the change in Koji¡¯s tone, but he kept his posture, looking at his hired hand and nodding to the side. The bodyguard smiled mockingly and stepped away from the two, keeping a certain distance. ¨C Finally, civilized people can talk. ¨C Koji responded with a different kind of smile, one devoid of sympathy. With a touch, he flicked the ash to the floor, mixing with the dust of the place. Ch. 0, Pt. 3: The prides abyss Williams took the lead in the conversation. Now it was just him and Koji, staring at each other. The bodyguard remained vigilant behind his employer. ¨C Do you have any idea why we¡¯re meeting? ¨C Koji asked, lowering his head slightly, looking up at Williams. ¨C I have no idea. In fact, I hope it''s something important. I''m sure you''re aware that my time is precious. For a brief moment, there was a slight twitch in Koji''s left eyelid, but the smile never left his lips. ¨C Do you really think I''d waste my time if the matter wasn¡¯t..." Koji kept his tone light, but he was soon interrupted. ¨CI''m sure you wouldn''t waste my time. After all, you wouldn''t want any delays in product transactions because of you. Koji maintained his smile, but the corners of his lips twitched. He closed his eyes and began chuckling softly to himself. Williams wrinkled his nose at the sight. Koji then burst into an extravagant laugh, lifting his head. ¨CFunny you''d say that. After all, I''ve been wondering what the hell goes on in that empty little head of yours? ¨C Koji commented, shaking his head slightly in disbelief. He took a drag of his cigarette, almost biting it. ¨C Because you clearly don''t have a brain! ¨C Are you crazy!? Do you know who I am!? ¨C Williams lifted his chin as he asked, but his watch swayed lightly as his wrist began to tremble. ¨CAn idiot! That''s what you are! ¨C Koji replied sharply, almost cutting Williams off. He then paused, studying him. ¨C You have no idea what you''ve done, do you? Koji resumed his grin and pulled out a pair of black gloves from his jacket pockets, both made from thick, durable material. ¨C What the hell are you talking about? The job was done with excellence; no mistakes were made. ¨C Williams said, his expression puzzled, unable to comprehend. Koji slowly put on the gloves, pressing a button on each glove''s end, causing them to emit a faint vibration. ¨C Excellence, huh? It''s funny that your nose is so high up you can''t even smell the shit you''ve stepped in. Williams stood still; his jaw clenched. The bodyguard watched Koji, taking a more alert stance in response. ¨C This ridiculous meeting makes no sense. If you have something to say, say it already! ¨C Williams shot back, frowning but leaning back slightly. ¨C You plugged something into our provided device, didn¡¯t you? ¨C Koji asked while flicking his cigarette onto the ground. ¨C What are you talking about...? Of course, I didn¡¯t plug anything in! ¨C Come on, Williams, don''t you want to save us both time so we can get to what really matters? ¨C Koji asked as he moved away from the stairs. ¨C You must be insane... I didn¡¯t do anything wrong! All security protocols were followed! This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report. Koji took a deep breath, shaking his head slightly as he stopped after pacing briefly. ¨C You plugged a USB device into the laptop we provided, which wouldn¡¯t have been a problem, ¨C he said, furrowing his brow. ¨C but you disabled the system''s protections! His smile gradually faded, replaced by a completely serious expression. ¨C You leaked some very important information, and there are people who aren¡¯t too happy about your mistake. ¨C This is a waste of time! ¨C Williams retorted, his heart racing as he avoided eye contact. ¨C I didn¡¯t do any of that! Koji sighed and looked up, rolling his eyes and shaking his head. ¨C October fifth¡ does that ring a bell? ¨C he said, his black eyes fixed on Williams. ¨C You disabled the security exactly at 10:50 PM. It seems you were working late... At this moment, Williams froze, his gaze dropping to the floor. ¨C No... that''s not possible... ¨C Williams took a step back. ¨CYou must be mistaken. Check again, maybe you got it wrong because that was just an emergency! ¨C The mistake was yours, but that doesn¡¯t matter anymore. What I want to know is... ¨C Koji¡¯s sharp eyes bore into Williams''. ¨C Whose USB device was it? ¨C It doesn¡¯t make sense... I know him, he¡¯s just another regular man... ¨C Give me the name. ¨C You''re wrong, you''re looking for things that don¡¯t exist! ¨CWilliams said with his arms spread wide. ¨C The name! Give me the damn name! ¨C Koji snapped, shouting and stepping forward, his teeth clenched. ¨C It¡¯s Kevin... Kevin Bright... But it wasn¡¯t my fault! I didn¡¯t know anything! ¨C Williams replied, his voice cracking. Koji, however, didn¡¯t seem to pay him any attention. He appeared lost in thought after hearing the name mentioned. Then, he turned to Williams with a cold stare. ¨C If you think you¡¯ll get away from this unscathed, you¡¯re dead wrong. It¡¯s because of you we¡¯re in this tangled mess of shit. ¨C Koji¡¯s tone was harsh and direct, his gaze fixed like a predator eyeing its prey. ¨C This is ridiculous! I made no mistake! ¨C Williams was growing more agitated, breathing heavily, with sweat now dripping down his forehead. ¨C Williams, you¡¯re about to learn one of life¡¯s hard truths: you¡¯re not special. ¨C Koji said as he lit another cigarette, savoring every second of that drag. ¨CYou¡¯re just another easily replaceable number. He let the smoke escape from the corner of his mouth with a crooked smile. ¨C You better not try anything! I¡¯ve got my bodyguard! ¨CWilliams yelled as he slowly backed away. ¨C Ah, like a disobedient animal; in the end, I¡¯ll still rub your face in the shit you¡¯ve caused. ¨C Koji said, rolling his eyes. Then, looking at the bodyguard, he added: ¨C I''ll pay you double what he¡¯s paying if you just walk away. What do you think? It¡¯s sure a lot of money for people like you. Williams¡¯ eyes widened, and he took a step back, shifting his gaze between his bodyguard and the man in front of him. The bodyguard stared at Koji, grinning, revealing some golden dental implants. He spat on the ground, returning to his stern expression. Koji shook his head slightly, his eyes drifting to the left, toward the stairs, and then nodded briefly. ¨C Do what you must... Upon hearing this, Williams turned to his bodyguard, who suddenly rushed toward him. Williams attempted to retreat with fear in his eyes, as the bodyguard lunged forward with his left hand open as if about to strike. However, the bodyguard''s hand passed by his head, and a supernatural glow sparked in the bodyguard''s pupils, with a yellowish hue. Then, in front of the bodyguard''s hand, the dust on the ground dispersed abruptly, scattering briefly throughout the area and revealing a translucent hand-shaped figure floating in front of him. Suddenly, the sound of a blade clashing against something solid echoed from the direction of the translucent hand. In a matter of moments, the dim lighting of the place began to slowly reflect the blade of a katana pressed against the translucent hand. Then, the figure of a black man wielding the blade was slowly revealed, as if emerging from the darkness. He wore dark sunglasses that completely concealed his eyes. His skin was dark brown, like cocoa, and his long hair was tangled into long dreadlocks that reached halfway down his back. Moreover, a full beard outlined his thick lips. He was dressed in dark clothing, made of durable and comfortable fabric, with a type of vest that protected his torso. At his waist, other smaller blades and small pouches could be seen. ¨C Looks like someone¡¯s going to have to play with their food today¡ ¨C Koji whispered to himself, a smile forming on his face as he watched the battle unfold in front of him. Ch. 0, Pt. 4: Wolf in sheeps clothing ¨C An enhanced one... who would¡¯ve thought? ¨C Koji said, with a curious look. ¨C And a Gamma stigma at that, this promises to be interesting. Both the bodyguard and the man with the katana stared each other down. ¨C I have to admit, I''m impressed. However, I hate it when someone interrupts my business. ¨C Koji commented nonchalantly as he smoked, looking at the man with the katana. ¨C Try not to take too long finishing that one off, Shadow. Without a word, the bodyguard grabbed Williams by the collar with his free hand and threw him behind him, then clenched his hand firmly. Suddenly, behind him, a large translucent figure began to form next to Williams, who was now on the ground and crawled backward. The figure took the shape of an enormous translucent fist. Shadow quickly noticed what had happened as the large translucent hand stopped his blade. When he tried to pull back, but the translucent palm in front of him closed, trapping his sword. ¨C Got you ¨C said the bodyguard, a slight smile appearing as he clenched his left hand, which mimicked the giant hand holding the katana. Then, he followed up by striking Shadow with the translucent fist in a lateral blow, mirrored by his right hand. The speed of the bodyguard''s attack was matched by the force of the fist, evident by the dust that scattered in its wake. Shadow seemed cornered, but he reacted quickly, giving up on freeing his katana and using it as leverage to perform a somersault over the strike. The air beneath him moved as if driven by a speeding car. Yet, he remained calm, observing his opponent''s every move. Still in the air, he tightly gripped a smaller blade from his waist and hurled it at the bodyguard, using the momentum of his spin to generate more power. In an instant, the blade hit the bodyguard''s left shoulder, making him groan as blood slowly began to trickle down. When Shadow landed, he cast a glance back at the bodyguard over his shoulder and saw his opponent''s pupils still glowing. Then the bodyguard moved his left hand slowly, as if preparing to slap something. Immediately, Shadow spun around and was hit by a strike from the translucent hand that had previously held his katana. He jumped in the same direction as the blow, his legs bent, and his head shielded by his arms, just before being struck. Then he was dragged across the dusty floor until he collided with a pillar. For a few seconds, Shadow remained still, but he quickly tried to push himself off the ground with trembling hands, feeling every muscle in his body protesting. He removed his broken glasses from his face, revealing his brown eyes. The bodyguard gritted his teeth as he gripped the blade stuck in his shoulder, then yanked it out and tossed it to the ground with a restrained grunt. Blood flowed, staining his shirt, while Shadow watched him, coughing and clutching his left rib with clenched teeth. He dropped his expression and once again adopted a combat stance, drawing another short blade from a sheath and pointing it at the bodyguard, their eyes locking once more. ¨C What a show! If I had known, I would¡¯ve brought popcorn ¨C said Koji, clapping lightly and smiling. The bodyguard turned his attention to him and, noticing his lack of readiness, simply pointed his hand in his direction. ¨C Want to eat, eh? Then swallow this, hijo de puta! ¨C the bodyguard exclaimed, pointing two fingers at Koji. The bodyguard''s pupils flickered again, and from the tips of his fingers, a translucent projectile, resembling an arrowhead, was fired rapidly. A faint sound could be heard as the projectile cut through the air due to its speed. Koji''s eyes widened, but he didn¡¯t attempt to dodge the projectile. In fact, his pupils also sparked with that same supernatural gleam, but this time in a light-yellow hue. He quickly extended his hand, and from its vibrating surface due to his glove, a rapid distortion in the air could be seen. The vibrations warped the surrounding environment, creating almost invisible waves that floated in front of him and sounded like the bass of a powerful sound. These waves seemed to push everything in the opposite direction with considerable force, with dust swirling around him; however, the effect appeared to have a short range. The projectile sped toward Koji¡¯s technique, which hadn¡¯t fully formed due to the short amount of time. It passed through, losing precision and strength during its trajectory; it deformed and only grazed Koji¡¯s face, causing a small diagonal cut on his lower lip and destroying his cigarette, which was hit dead-on. A silence fell over the area. The bodyguard gritted his teeth as he observed both Shadow and Koji. Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon. ¨C Koji... you''re an enhanced one too... ¨C the words coming from Williams'' mouth were weak, as though his throat was closing, and his mouth was dry. Blood gently trickled down Koji¡¯s smooth face. He slowly ran his hand over the wound, examining the red that stained his glove. His eyes remained wide open, unblinking. Then, the warm blood flowed down his lip again, and he shifted his gaze to the bodyguard, with an intense glow in his pupils. ¨C You Mexican... ¨C Koji seethed, his voice echoing throughout the vast floor. ¨C Son of a bitch! Then, he took advantage of the vibrations he had formed in front of him to launch an attack where the vibrations shaped into a wavy form, resembling the upper part of a jellyfish. ¨C I¡¯ll splatter your guts all over this floor! ¨C He continued; his rage clear as he unleashed a massive wave of vibrations that devastated everything in its path. The bodyguard furrowed his brow, raising both hands to face the incoming attack, bracing himself with clenched teeth. His pupils flickered again, and from the palms of his hands, two enormous translucent hands formed, open and aimed at the onrushing blow. Shadow took cover behind a pillar to protect himself, while Williams screamed, unable to do anything, raising his arms in front of his face in an attempt to shield himself. Then, the collision occurred. A powerful boom could be felt even from outside the building, followed by a deep sound that dissipated. The floor where everyone stood trembled briefly, and dust spread everywhere, still vibrating slightly in the air. Williams slowly opened his eyes, feeling the shockwave on the cracked ground. The impact had traveled up his legs, and now he coughed, his vision blurry and a ringing in his ears. Lying on the ground, he could see the dust rising and the trembling figure of his contractor, standing right in front of him. A sharp pain throbbed in his head; as he wiped his forehead, he felt the blood briefly trickling between his fingers. As he stood up, he noticed his clothes were damaged from the impact, and his body was covered in scratches; the bodyguard panted, indicating that a good portion of Koji¡¯s blow had hit him. In front of him, chunks of the ceiling were falling, and the floor was full of cracks. Through the thick cloud of dust that hid almost everything around, the impact had knocked out the few lights illuminating the area. Darkness reigned, except for two glowing points in a light-yellow hue, some distance from Williams and the bodyguard. Then, once again, the deep sound began, like a deadly melody. ¨C Impressive... ¨C The voice came through the dust, hiding Koji¡¯s figure. His sinister tone sounded calm but restrained. ¨C You know, few have withstood a direct attack from me, but none have ever survived the second one! The entire floor began to vibrate, while the glowing lights in the dust intensified. The bodyguard anxiously looked around, then focused his gaze on the glow coming from the dust cloud, covering the wound on his shoulder with his hand and slowly stepping back. As he stepped back, his foot sank into a crack, briefly causing him to lose balance, but he managed to stay on his feet. He observed the floor below him, which was completely damaged. Then, quickly, he clenched both fists, and the glow in his pupils returned. ¨C Get ready! ¨C he shouted at Williams, who was holding his head, trying not to lose balance. On either side of the bodyguard, two translucent fists slowly formed again, this time appearing less defined, as if weakening. ¨C What are you doing!? ¨C Williams yelled as he limped closer to his contractor. ¨C That¡¯s how it¡¯s done! ¨C Koji shouted, and the excitement was evident in his tone. Suddenly, the entire floor stopped vibrating. ¨C Let¡¯s see how much you can take! For a moment, the deep sound stopped; however, the dust suddenly started to push away with a deafening sound in front of Williams and the bodyguard. The floor became increasingly damaged as the wave of vibration approached them, and the floor trembled beneath their feet. ¨C Don¡¯t move! ¨C the bodyguard shouted, gritting his teeth against the pressure of the reverberating sound, keeping his fists clenched, waiting for the right moment. ¨C I don¡¯t want to die! ¨C Williams shouted, covering his ears with his eyes shut. The wave of destruction created by Koji approached, carrying a deafening vibration and making the ground tremble under their feet. The bodyguard remained focused; as he felt the impact of the crack beneath his feet again, he raised his hands and struck the ground with both translucent fists. As the blow struck, the already damaged floor gave way, sending both Williams and the bodyguard crashing to the floor below, just moments before Koji¡¯s attack reached them. Koji¡¯s laughter echoed through the floor after the silence. A few minutes later, the dust began to settle, and Koji looked at the spot where the two had been moments, initially with a smirk. His gaze swept across the space until he noticed a hole in the floor, exactly where the two had been. He shook his head slightly. Slowly, he ran a hand over his eyes, then through the hair that fell across his face. His expression was one of genuine hatred. ¨C That Mexican... ¨C Koji''s voice trembled, his lips curled and quivering as he shouted, staring at the hole in the floor. ¨CWhy won''t he just die already!? His pupils gradually flickered, and then he quickly unleashed a wave of vibration that shattered a nearby wall. Meanwhile, Sombra made his way toward his fallen blades. ¨C The enhanced one shouldn''t last much longer, and without him, 425 will be easy prey. ¨C Sombra remarked as he picked up the small blade he''d previously thrown. It was stained with blood, but a pale yellowish, almost translucent liquid was also dripping from its edge. ¨C The poison has been applied. ¨C Sombra gestured with the short blade in his hand as he examined it. Then, he moved closer to peer into the hole in the floor, placing a hand on his rib and cracking his neck. ¨C Then let''s go. I''ll make sure Williams suffers plenty before he dies. Make sure that damned Mexican suffers too... ¨C Koji headed toward the stairs as he spoke, frustration still pulsing through his veins, and the glow in his eyes did not fade. On the other hand, Sombra retrieved his katana from the ground. Then, he descended through the hole in front of him, with a red gleam flickering in his eyes. Before he fell, the light seemed to stop reflecting off his body and clothes, and he quickly vanished into thin air. Ch. 0, Pt. 5: The Whispers of Death The blue eyes shot open abruptly, and the ragged breathing was interrupted by a cough. The right arm lifted, frantic and trembling, as it tried to remove the debris from on top of himself, revealing a damaged gold watch. Then, a bloodied hand grabbed him, pulling him forcefully. Williams was slowly dragged out from under the rubble by his bodyguard. He was also coughing, but more restrained, occasionally glancing at the hole above them, which constantly showered dust. Williams gritted his teeth as he was pulled to his feet. He noticed blood running down his face and placed his hand on his left knee, feeling the pain resonate throughout his body. ¨C Can you walk? ¨C the bodyguard asked, his expression pained. Williams was gasping, looking around the dark room, but all he could focus on was the man in front of him, who was drenched in sweat and had a weary look in his eyes. Williams grabbed the bodyguard¡¯s shoulders, his eyes wide. But as he did, the bodyguard quickly threw him behind, then placed a hand near the wound on his shoulder. ¨C Son of a bitch... ¨C he whispered to himself, clenching his eyes shut tightly. ¨C What... what happened? ¨C Williams asked, struggling to stand. ¨C We¡¯re screwed... this happened! The bodyguard approached Williams, grabbing his jacket to help him stand. He got to his feet, limping due to the pain in his knee. ¨C Shit... Koji is an enhanced one... ¨C Williams said, panic evident in his voice, which echoed through the room. ¨C What the hell is going on!? The bodyguard quickly clamped a hand over Williams¡¯ mouth, gripping his face hard. ¨C Shut up, they can hear us... ¨C he said through gritted teeth, looking up and gesturing with his head. ¨C We have to get out... fast! Williams nodded, pressing his lips together as he pulled a cellphone from his pocket and activated the flashlight function. The place they were in seemed like an empty room, and with the light, they managed to spot a door. Williams quickly headed toward it, limping as he went. The bodyguard, however, moved slowly, supporting himself against the wall when he found it. This floor, unlike the previous one, was more renovated, with well-made walls and spaces for doors. However, there was no lighting, not even from outside, as the place was completely sealed off. Williams panted, looking both ways down the dark hallway. The bodyguard stepped out of the room, walking a little way down the corridor before leaning against a wall. He braced himself with his hand, leaving a trail of blood; his figure was trembling and gasping for breath. ¨C Carajo... can you see the exit? ¨C the bodyguard asked as he slowly collapsed, propping himself against the wall. He tried to wipe the sweat from his face with one hand, keeping his eyes fixed on the room they had just left. Williams paused to catch his breath and looked at the bodyguard and the dark corridor. ¨C I... I don¡¯t know. Which way did we come from when we went up? I can barely see anything, and I¡¯m not sure where we are... ¨C Williams said, following the same direction as his bodyguard. The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement. A cough seized the bodyguard, and he placed his hand over his mouth to suppress the sound. But he felt the moisture and stickiness in his hand. Then, he closed his eyes as a smile formed at the corner of his mouth, soon turning into laughter. ¨C Ha ha ha ha... ?puta madre! ?No lo creo! The bodyguard was overcome, sweat pouring from his body, and blood stained his entire outfit. ¨C What are you doing? You¡¯re going to alert them! ¨C Williams said in a muffled voice, approaching his bodyguard. But the bodyguard quickly shoved him away, causing Williams to fall to the ground along with his phone, which illuminated the ceiling and the figures of both men. The bodyguard then leaned against the wall, but in the opposite direction from Williams. ¨C Listen, whitey... it¡¯s over for me... ¨C the bodyguard said, swallowing hard and forcing a smile that was almost hidden by his pained expression. ¨C What are you saying? You need to get me out of here! ¨CWilliams said, his voice filled with frustration, but fear and pain were mingled in that mix of emotions. ¨C I need to get out of here... alive! The bodyguard looked toward Williams and noticed the golden glow of the wedding ring Williams was almost absentmindedly stroking. Then, he stared at the ground, placing his hand on his chest and feeling his crucifix. He then pulled a silver pistol from behind his pants, gripping it by the barrel and offering it to Williams. ¨C Here... if you come across one of those sons of bitches... shoot them in the face... ¨C What... I won¡¯t be able to... I¡¯ve never used a gun... ¨C Cabron! ¨C the bodyguard said, gripping the gun barrel tightly. ¨C You have to accept reality... either you kill... or you die... Williams slowly took hold of the blood-stained gun. The bodyguard nodded, his eyes drooping and his breathing growing weaker. ¨C It¡¯s already unlocked... aim and pull the trigger... ¨C I¡¯ve never killed anyone... ¨C You¡¯re also a criminal, so you¡¯ve already killed... just not with your own hands... ¨C the bodyguard replied, struggling to stand. ¨C But now, only one thing matters... family. Williams¡¯ eyes filled with tears, and his mouth went dry. He stared at the bloodied gun he held in both hands. Then, he took a deep breath and nodded. ¨C Go... find and save your family. If those bastards come through the hole... I¡¯ll stop them, none of them will get past here... ¨C the bodyguard said, standing upright, leaning against the wall, coughing. ¨C If you come across one of them... you know what to do... Williams nodded, bending down to pick up his phone from the ground and facing the corridor ahead. ¨C Hey... what¡¯s your name? ¨CWilliams asked as he looked back, sweat dripping down his face and mixing with the dust. ¨C Your real name¡ ¨C Javier... now go! ¨C Javier, the bodyguard, responded through clenched teeth, nodding toward the corridor. ¨C I¡¯m sorry Javier¡ Williams limped toward the corridor, moving away with the light cutting through the darkness. Javier tried to take deep breaths, but he felt the unbearable fever rising within him. The suffocating silence enveloped him, along with the darkness. ¨C Lo siento, hermanita, creo que lo arruin¨¦ todo esta vez... ¨C he whispered to himself, pulling out the crucifix from his clothes and gripping it tightly. ¨C ¨¦s como siempre me dec¨ªa, quien baila com l¨¢ muerte, al final se acuesta com ella... He let go of the crucifix, which fell against his chest. Sweat poured down his face as his trembling eyes shut tight. He then looked toward the door, and in front of it were two flickering red dots. ¨C If you think I¡¯m going to die... screw you! ¨C Javier shouted toward the door, pushing himself away from the wall and forcing a smile. ¨C After this, I¡¯m gonna drink like hell... and then find a hooker... like every other night! The silence persisted, but slow footsteps could be heard approaching the door, and the red lights drew nearer and nearer. ¨C Heh, yo siempre respond¨ªa lo mismo, hermanita... ¨C he whispered to himself once more, squeezing his eyes shut. ¨C ?La muerte puede llevarme... cuando ella merezca! Javier opened his eyes; his pupils sparked erratically, and he let out a roar of fury, charging forward with his translucent fists barely forming at his sides. A few seconds passed, and the sounds of a fight echoed down the dark corridor, followed by a scream of pain. Finally, the silence returned to envelop the place. ¨C Well fought... ¨C A deep voice came from the darkness. Then those two red dots reappeared, moving down the corridor, leaving a trail of blood in their wake. Ch. 0, Pt. 6: Aswang Williams limped through the corridor, holding the phone to his ear as he moved forward. ¨C Damn it, honey! Why aren¡¯t you answering the damn phone? ¨C he muttered to himself, pulling the phone away to check the call, which eventually went to voicemail. ¨C Baby, leave your sister¡¯s house with Katherine and grab that money. Go to your parents¡¯ place and wait for me there¡ I love you¡ I love you both... Williams said, panting, staring at the phone as the message was recorded in the voicemail. He then dialed the emergency number. ¨C This is the Nova Atlantida police. What¡¯s your emergency? Hearing a woman¡¯s voice, he slowly started walking again, continuing down the corridor. ¨C I¡¯m in danger! There are Enhanced ones... Please, send help! ¨C Williams responded, his voice exhausted and frantic. ¨C Sir, I¡¯m having trouble understanding you. Could you please try to speak more calmly? Where are you? As the voice spoke through the phone, Williams frowned, pulling the phone closer to his mouth. ¨C Damn it! I¡¯m in Freedom Valley! At the damn hospital... Williams shouted into the phone as he passed a junction between corridors. His ear caught an irritating, continuous frequency. Suddenly, two bright yellow lights approached in the dim light, and Koji¡¯s voice echoed. ¨C Hello, Williams... His eyes widened, and he quickly tried to run in the opposite direction, falling to the ground as he struggled to put weight on his injured leg. ¨C Stay away from me! Help! Someone help me! Williams screamed as he tried to get up, while Koji¡¯s slow steps approached. ¨C How rude, trying to escape your punishment. Naughty boy. ¨CKoji said as he stepped closer to Williams. ¨C Let me teach you something about myself: I hate chasing. With a slight gesture of his right hand, a wave of vibration was unleashed. A low sound reverberated through the corridor as Williams was thrown against the wall with great impact. He screamed, dropping the phone, gasping for air as he clutched his chest, eyes squeezed shut. ¨C You¡¯ve always been a coward, but appealing to public safety? That was low, even for you... ¨C Koji continued, stepping on the phone lying on the ground. Williams was curled up against the wall, but he sat up, bracing himself. ¨C After all the mess you¡¯ve caused, you still think you¡¯ll get out of here alive? ¨C Koji asked, raising his eyebrows with a slight smile. ¨C Back off! Leave me alone! If you come any closer¡ I¡¯ll shoot you! ¨C Williams shouted, pulling a bloodstained gun from his coat and pointing it at Koji. Koji observed the reaction and burst into laughter, leaning his back against the corridor wall. ¨C Come on! Look at yourself! I bet you don¡¯t even have the guts to pull that trigger. ¨C Koji said, leaning against the wall just a few meters from Williams. A slight grin appeared on his lips, and his eyebrows raised subtly, showing his growing interest. ¨C But you know, Williams, inside each of us, there¡¯s a monster that comes out when we¡¯re in extreme situations... ¨C Koji began, slowly pushing off from the wall, standing upright in the corridor. Williams could only make out his silhouette and the gleam in his pupils, watching him coldly. ¨C It takes over to keep this hunk of flesh alive, usually in life-or-death moments. The problem is that society has ''evolved'' and now loves creating weaklings like you. They think power can be gained with just money and influence. ¨C I¡¯m not kidding, you bastard! ¨C Williams screamed, gripping his gun more tightly. Sweat ran down his temples, and his hands were trembling so much that the gun almost slipped from his fingers. ¨C Of course not... Fine, I¡¯ll give you a chance: shoot me... ¨C Koji said, his tone turning serious. Williams stared at Koji, swallowing hard; his finger hovered over the trigger, but he couldn¡¯t get the strength to pull it. ¨C Don¡¯t you want to end this nightmare? All you need to do is pull the trigger... A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. Koji¡¯s warm voice echoed in Williams¡¯ ears, who took a deep breath as he stared at the man standing in front of him. ¨C Come on, Williams! You just need to pull the trigger. Unleash the monster you need to survive; that¡¯s the only way this can get to an end! Koji pointed to his own chest with his free hand as he spoke fervently, his eyes locked on Williams, who hesitated. Then he commanded: ¨C Shoot! The sound of the shot followed Koji¡¯s command, and Williams squeezed his eyes shut. For a moment, all he could hear was that agonizing frequency that had been bothering his ears relentlessly. Then he slowly opened his eyes, realizing that the figure with the glowing pupils was still there. Williams fired several more shots, continuing to pull the trigger even after his gun was emptied. Koji¡¯s laughter echoed down the corridor after the shots. ¨C It¡¯s almost imperceptible, don¡¯t you think? ¨C Koji approached one of the bullets, which was floating in front of him, deformed and vibrating. The bullets were suspended in mid-air, vibrating, but fell to the floor once the glow in Koji¡¯s pupils disappeared. ¨C Your instruments are only power to this weak society! In reality, only those who can use their inner monsters can attain true power... and it¡¯s taken only through violence. ¨C Koji¡¯s response was accompanied by a smile that became more pronounced as he approached Williams. ¨C Mr. Koji... please, spare my life... I won¡¯t make any more mistakes! You know I have a family I love; they need me! ¨CWilliams begged, kneeling with his face pressed to the floor. Koji watched him, now expressionless, as he pulled a phone from his pants. ¨C You love your family, huh? Funny, because most of the money you earned went to nights filled with drugs, gambling, and lust. Doesn¡¯t seem like someone who cares much about his family, to be honest. Hearing Koji¡¯s words, Williams swallowed hard, not lifting his face from the floor for even a second. ¨C I¡¯ve also heard that you neglected the family you claim to love, always keeping your distance. But I understand you; we men are ambitious creatures. I suppose that¡¯s true even for someone as useless as you... But no more; that concern is in the past. ¨C What do you mean? ¨C Williams asked, a lump forming in his throat and his eyes trembling as his fingers clutched the dirty floor of the corridor. ¨C Worship me as your messiah! I¡¯ve freed you from your chains; from now on, you are a free man again! Koji finished with a smile that revealed his straight white teeth as he offered a phone with the screen lit toward Williams. Williams¡¯ hands slowly reached for the phone, turning it toward himself as he took it. When he looked at the screen, his eyes widened, quickly filling with tears. He shook his head in denial, barely able to hold the phone. ¨C She was a beautiful woman, but don¡¯t worry; she certainly didn¡¯t die alone... Unlike you, I kept her company until the very last second... ¨C Koji said, that twisted smile on his face as he watched Williams intently. Williams let out a furious scream, clenching his fists and preparing to strike. But just as he was about to attack, Koji made a slight gesture with his right hand, and his pupils shimmered with a supernatural glow. In an instant, a concentrated wave of vibration was released, this time precise, targeting only Williams¡¯ right arm, the one he would have used to attack. The sound reverberated through the air, along with blood and flesh that splattered against the wall, and the tiny gold fragments of what was once his watch. Williams collapsed to the floor, screaming, his left-hand clutching what remained of his arm. From his elbow down, there was nothing left but some skin and a piece of exposed bone. ¨C Oh... What happened, Williams? Don¡¯t tell me you need a hand? ¨C Koji asked with a genuine smile, picking up his phone and briefly glancing at the photos. ¨C You bastard! How could you do that to her!? Damn you! You son of a bitch! ¨C Williams shouted as he lay on the ground, his eyes filled with tears. ¨C Shh... Big guy, it was fun, and believe me, she could barely contain her excitement... Or was it pain? I¡¯m not sure because the only sound she made was ¡®Urgh! Urgh!¡¯ ¨C Koji said, placing a hand over his mouth and making muffled sounds, then smiling. ¨C Kate, my love... my God... What did you do to my daughter!? ¨C Williams¡¯ voice faltered as he questioned, keeping his face on the floor, his voice broken with choking sobs. Koji¡¯s expression suddenly changed. His smile faded, and he locked his phone, glancing in the direction Williams had come from. ¨C Oh, Katherine, right? Unfortunately, not this time... I would¡¯ve loved to have the whole family gathered here, but you know, Shadow is very protective when it comes to little kids... ¨C Koji¡¯s sharp eyes peered into the darkness. ¨C Especially when it¡¯s a little girl; must remind him of someone important. The faint light in the corridor seemed to bend as Shadow emerged. His blades dripped with fresh blood, and the glow in his pupils faded as his figure slowly took form. ¨C So, how did that damned Mexican die? I hope you sliced the bastard up... ¨C Koji said, eyeing the bloodstained blades. ¨C I¡¯ll finish this quickly; there¡¯s no point in dragging it out any longer. ¨C Shadow said, cutting Koji off as he wiped the blood from his blades and made his way toward Williams, who lay on the ground. However, he was stopped by Koji, who placed a hand on his chest, staring at him for a moment. ¨C Remember what I said? I wanted to handle this my way¡ ¨C I don¡¯t give a damn; let¡¯s just end this. ¨C But we¡¯re just starting to have fun, aren¡¯t we, Williams!? ¨C Koji said, turning his attention back to the man on the floor. ¨C I want this bastard to suffer! For screwing everything up! With each shout from Koji, he kicked Williams, and with every kick, Williams¡¯ body jolted violently. Blood spurted from his shattered arm, forming small puddles around him. With every new blow, his vision grew blurrier, and the pain became unbearable. Koji finally ran his hand over his face, slicking his hair back. Shadow stared at him with a furrowed brow. Then Koji¡¯s demeanor shifted. ¨C Alright, alright... time to finish this. I hope you find your whore of a wife in the afterlife... preferably in pieces, just like I left her... ¨C Koji¡¯s pupils began to flicker as he pointed his hand toward Williams. But just as he finished speaking, a yellowish light approached from the darkness, coming from the direction of the stairs, like a will-o''-the-wisp in a desolate place. Koji stepped closer to Williams, squatted down, and grabbed his hair, yanking his head toward the floating flame. ¨C See that, you bastard? You screwed everything up! ¨C Koji whispered, grabbing Williams¡¯ head and slamming it against the floor, leaving him there, bleeding. He then stood up and walked away from Williams, quickly signaling to Shadow, who vanished into thin air. Then, he tried to wipe the few blood stains in his clothes and looked toward the floating flame, which was drawing near him. Ch. 0, Pt. 7: Ignition ¨C Step away from the man on the ground! ¨C The rigid yet melodious voice came from the direction of the approaching flames, belonging to a beautiful young woman. ¨C You¡¯re under arrest, surrender now or I¡¯ll have to use force! She was surrounded by flames that danced around her body. Her skin was fair and smooth, while her eyes were green with a light blue glow sparkling in her pupils. Her long hair was red, with the tips seemingly merging with the flames that encircled her. Her face was delicate, with full lips. The young woman¡¯s gaze remained fixed on Koji, occasionally glancing at Williams. She wore a tight, white bodysuit with red and black details that accentuated the curves of her body. Her outfit appeared unaffected by the flames, and they propelled her feet, keeping her from touching the ground until she finally landed. ¨C Good evening, Miss Scarlet Flame, correct? To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit? ¨C Koji gave a slight bow of his head as he asked. He raised his half-closed eyes to meet hers, keeping a faint smile on his face. ¨C This is your last warning! ¨C As she spoke, the flames around the girl burned even brighter. She clenched her fists, aiming them at Koji. ¨C Surrender now! ¨C Why do you Convergents always want to fight? Couldn¡¯t we just talk and settle this peacefully? ¨C Koji asked, shrugging as he slowly moved away from Williams. ¨C In front of you there is a man in need of medical attention, and you¡¯re the only suspect! And you still want to talk!? ¨C The girl demanded, gritting her teeth and holding her firm stance. ¨CYou better stop! ¨C Fair enough, ¨C Koji said, sighing as he looked at her with a wide grin. ¨C then let¡¯s play! He responded quickly, aiming his hands at the young woman as his pupils began to spark intensely. He unleashed a powerful concentrated vibration wave toward her, shooting through the air without damaging anything in its path. The young woman stood with both fists raised toward Koji, and the flames around her ignited even more, focusing in front of them as she unleashed a massive blaze of fire. When both attacks collided, the deafening wave of vibration shot through the corridor, unaffected by the flames. Instead, the fire was distorted and scattered in all directions, quickly spreading and starting a large fire. Sensing the sound and air vibrating around her, the young woman swiftly darted into one of the rooms without a door, using the flames as propellers. The attack continued toward the stairs, crashing and creating a tremendous noise, damaging the side wall of the building. The floor briefly shook from the impact. The flames spread throughout the area, and Koji had an arm raised over his face due to the heat surrounding him, searching for the young woman. He shot waves of vibrations at the walls of the rooms next to where she had entered. ¨C You should know there''s no scenario where you win this battle! ¨C Koji''s voice echoed down the corridor as he continued to take slow steps backward. ¨C Why don¡¯t you come out and have some fun with me, little girl? Suddenly, a nearby wall took on a yellowish, heated tone, prompting him to launch an attack in that direction. His strike pierced through the wall, destroying a large portion of the room and sending dust everywhere, part of it spilling into the corridor. He squinted briefly because of the dust, noticing nothing but flames in that room. Turning his attention back to the hallway, he saw a figure enveloped in flames emerging from a room behind him, flying toward him. He turned and aimed his right hand at the flaming figure. However, at the last moment, he switched and fired with his left hand in the opposite direction, eliciting a scream of pain from a feminine voice. The young woman had been hit, falling to the ground, and much of the fire surrounding her dissipated, along with the fiery figure advancing behind Koji. The girl collapsed with clenched teeth and shut eyes. This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there. ¨C A distraction? Too bad the darkness made it clear that figure wasn¡¯t solid. ¨C Koji said arrogantly as he continued to back away from the rapidly spreading flames. ¨C Are you sure someone like you is capable of acting as a Convergent? The young woman stood up, glaring at him with clenched teeth, wiping the blood that lightly dripped from her lips. Quickly, she shifted her attention to the man lying on the ground, who was losing blood rapidly as the flames around him closed in. Her pupils sparked once more, and with a swift gesture of her hands, the flames nearing the man retreated. She needed to make a decision. First, she saw the man in the jacket retreating further from the fire; then, she looked at the wounded man on the ground. As her green eyes reflected the flames, they suddenly widened. ¨C Argh... Looking down, she realized a blade had pierced through her abdomen. Slowly, she opened her mouth, letting out a groan of pain as she turned her head slowly to look back. Behind her, two red, glowing dots hovered in the air. She let out a scream, clenching her fists and stretching as if awakening from a long slumber, while her pupils glowed even brighter. The air around her ignited rapidly, creating an explosion as she screamed. Sombra was partially hit, thrown back about a meter along with his blade, and vanished once again. The girl let out a pained groan and fell to her knees, blood streaming from her uniform. ¨C We don¡¯t have much time, it¡¯s time to go! ¨C Sombra shouted, moving toward Koji. ¨C Then let¡¯s finish this! It was a pleasure, little firey girl! Koji¡¯s voice echoed toward the kneeling girl, once again with a wide grin on his face. His pupils flickered even more intensely, and the vibrations emanating from his hand now affected the floor, spreading to the building¡¯s structure, creating cracks in the concrete ahead of him. The floor began to give way, along with the ceiling and walls, and soon part of the building started to collapse. The young woman lifted her head and, gritting her teeth, looked toward the fleeing individuals and the man lying on the ground. The ceiling above her gave way, and she quickly surged forward. Her pupils flickered again, absorbing some of the flames that had engulfed the nearby corridor. The flames wrapped around her and flowed to the tips of her hands and feet, giving her an extra boost toward her target. She dodged several falling debris, getting hit by a few and falling to the ground, but quickly resumed her path. When she finally reached the man, she swiftly grabbed him under his arms, groaning as blood poured down her uniform. With a burst of flames, she propelled herself toward a room to her right, as the path ahead was blocked by rubble. She screamed, concentrating and absorbing the flames around her, then released them, forming a massive, almost solid ball of fire around her body. With a scream of pain and desperation, she crashed through the wall, destroying it as she passed through, just as the building collapsed behind her. Two-thirds of the building had been destroyed, and only a few concrete structures remained standing. A cloud of dust formed around the nearby areas of the construction, spreading into the streets. Panic ensued, and nearby residents peered out of their windows; some even rushed into the streets with their phones to record the event. Amidst the smoke, a yellow glow appeared, flying erratically, losing altitude with each passing second until it finally hit the ground at the construction site. The young woman managed to land with the man in her arms, crashing harshly to the ground and rolling to break the fall, dispersing most of the flames she had concentrated. She groaned, placing her hands over the wound that had already stained much of her clothing. Her eyes were closed, and she gritted her teeth as she pressed down on the wound in her abdomen. Lying on her side, she gathered the remaining flames around her, focusing them into the palms of her hands and placing them over the wound on her abdomen and back. The fire took on a bluish hue, and instead of burning her skin, it began to heal it slowly, from the inside out, stopping the bleeding and closing the injury. She sighed, eyes closed, breathing deeply as she lay there. However, she quickly turned her attention to the man just a few meters away from her, kneeling beside him. First, she checked his pulse at his neck; it was weak, but still there. For a moment, she sighed and closed her eyes, but then noticed the blood flowing from the man¡¯s arm. ¨C This is going to hurt. I¡¯m sorry, but it¡¯s the only way¡ ¨C she said, her voice weary. Straining as her pupils flickered, flames ignited in the palm of her hand, surrounding it and turning it red-hot and glowing. She quickly grabbed the severed arm with her left hand, breathing rapidly as drops of sweat rolled down her forehead and quickly evaporated. Then, with her right hand, she gripped the edge of the wound. As soon as her hand¡¯s heat made contact with the wound, smoke quickly rose from it, and the wound began to cauterize from the intense heat. The man woke up screaming, trying to push the girl away, but she held him firmly, biting her lip and furrowing her brow. ¨C Just hold on a little longer... ¨C she said to the man, who was screaming, but he passed out again as the wound was finally cauterized. The young woman sat on her heels for a moment, panting, trembling, and staring at her bloodstained hands. She looked at the man before standing up and grabbing him under his arms. She bit her lip and bent her knees before launching into the air, propelled by flames generated from her feet. The crowd was filming the scene; some shouted words of hate while others simply watched. Sirens in the distance signaled the approach of police and firefighters as the dust slowly settled. Ch. 0, Pt. 8: Blood moon Near the construction site, in a dark and seemingly abandoned apartment, two individuals stood in the shadows. The place appeared to be a living room, but it was completely covered in graffiti and littered with trash everywhere. ¨C What the hell was that¡? ¨C Shadow said sharply, raising his voice as he glanced over his shoulder at Koji. ¨C You had plenty of chances to take out 425, and in the end, it was me who had to poison him. ¨C Unlike you, I like to enjoy my work hours. ¨C Koji replied, staring at Shadow¡¯s figure. ¨C You worry too much, little Shadow. In the end, it all worked out. After all, the girl didn¡¯t even notice your mark when you stabbed her from behind. Shadow turned toward Koji, who was leaning against a wall, slowly approaching him. ¨C That was kind of inappropriate, don¡¯t you think? She¡¯s probably underage, but it¡¯s good to know that, like me, you don¡¯t care... ¨C Koji was speaking in a light tone when he suddenly felt the air brush past his face. ¨C You almost screwed everything up! Do you think I¡¯m here to be your damn babysitter!? ¨C Shadow shouted, pressing his fist harder into the wall as he spoke. ¨C I remember someone having problems with a certain Mexican. ¨C Koji sighed, smirking. ¨C I feel like I¡¯m actually the one taking care of you, little Shadow. ¨C Everything would¡¯ve been handled if you hadn¡¯t wasted time chatting with 425! And for what? Look at what¡¯s happened now! ¨C Shadow yelled, pointing toward the hospital, where the dust was still settling. Smoke was rising from the building due to the fire. ¨C We¡¯re under the spotlight because you brought down a building on the daughter of a damn Defender! Shadow seemed on the verge of exploding; veins popped out on his forehead as he pointed toward the collapsed building in the distance, jabbing his finger into Koji¡¯s chest. Koji maintained his smile, though his brows furrowed slightly at the gesture. ¨C You¡¯re such a pessimist; you should start looking on the bright side. At least Williams isn¡¯t a problem anymore. ¨C Koji said, grinning as he heard the distant sound of sirens. If you find this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the infringement. ¨C You¡¯re not the only one affected by all of this, you bastard! If something goes wrong because of you¡ Shadow grabbed Koji while responding, shoving him against the wall. ¨C Oh, are you worried your little girl will find out what daddy is up to...? Koji interrupted Shadow¡¯s words, and Shadow swiftly pulled out a short blade, bringing it close to Koji¡¯s neck. ¨C Son of a... bitch... If you mention my daughter again, I will cut that damn tongue of yours out. ¨C Shadow ''s tone was sinister. He pressed the blade slightly against Koji¡¯s neck, yet the smile never left Koji¡¯s face. Both of them displayed seriousness in their expressions, though Koji allowed a brief smirk to form at the corner of his mouth, his sharp gaze locking onto the depths of Shadow¡¯s eyes. ¨C Little Shadow, my dear, it¡¯s just a little joke between coworkers. No need to take it seriously, after all... ¨C Koji replied, his pupils sparkling, while his hand vibrated as he pressed it against Shadow¡¯s abdomen. ¨C There could be... retaliation. They stared at each other for a brief moment before stepping away from one another. ¨C There''s no need to worry; just imagine how the media will spin what happened. ¡®Heroine brings down building in slum area and tortures innocent man in front of a crowd!¡¯ No one really cares about what goes on here. ¨C Koji declared, raising his hand to the sky as if making an announcement. ¨C You, who came from the ghetto, should know how things work. ¨C Screw you and your messed-up speech. ¨C Shadow said, turning his back to Koji, placing a hand on his forehead and taking a deep breath. ¨C Calm down; you know someone around here gets murdered, robbed, or raped every day, and no one really gives a damn. ¨C Koji continued with a slight smile and a nonchalant voice, flicking his finger toward Shadow as he responded. ¨C What¡¯s a demolished building in Vale da Liberdade? Everything that happens here gets brushed aside. Why do you think I love this place so much? ¨C Fuck you... Shadow replied, sheathing his smaller blade and heading for the door that led out of the place. Koji just smiled; he was about to reach for his cigarette case when he noticed the clouds clearing in the sky, revealing the full moon in all its glory. His eyes fixed on it, and he smiled. ¨C Finally, the perfect weather. Shadow glanced at Koji, his lips twisted and forehead furrowed, shaking his head. Then he turned away and disappeared into the air. A few seconds passed, and Koji kept that genuine smile on his face, savoring the sound of sirens and the destruction reflected in his eyes, along with the moonlight. He patted a pocket in his jacket and then pulled out a cloth containing a lump with a red stain. As he unfolded the cloth, he revealed a female finger adorned with a gold ring, set with a beautiful diamond. He gazed at it with a smirk, initially caressing the finger tenderly before giving it a long kiss, smearing his lips with blood. ¨C Ah, Kate... It¡¯s a shame Katherine isn¡¯t with us... She would¡¯ve loved to see this beautiful moonlit night. Ch. 1, Pt. 1: Rev up He could almost feel the texture of the sand beneath his bare feet, the slow touch of liquid wetting his toes, and the wind caressing his skin. The peace he once felt, the sense of freedom, was no longer there; now, only the darkness allowed these brief escapes from reality. ¡°Why...?¡± His fingers intertwined as he tried, unsuccessfully, to recall an image from his memory. Only vaguely recognizable sensations surfaced, yet nothing significant. ¡°Why can¡¯t I remember anything besides that prison...?¡± His thoughts were interrupted by the sway of the vehicle as it rounded a corner, pulling him back to reality. The dimly lit interior of the vehicle had reinforced walls and only a central light that partially illuminated two men sitting on either side, watching him at all times. They were dressed in ballistic leather outfits that didn¡¯t even allow a glimpse of their skin, balaclavas completely covering their faces, and they were armed with assault rifles. On their shoulders was a badge with a zero and Mandarin characters. The only difference between them was the camouflage: one was white, and the other gold. His fists clenched as he looked at his arm wrapped in the black hoodie. His dark, glossy skin contrasted with the cuff around his wrist, its LED flashing a constant red. ¨C What¡¯s going to happen to me? ¨C the young man asked in a deep voice, looking down at the two men. Both men remained silent, their heads turned toward him. ¨C Hey!? Why won¡¯t you say anything!? ¨C he raised his voice, frowning. His muscles tensed, showing through his clothing. He gritted his teeth, as if ready to move forward, but quickly quieted himself, sighing with a defeated expression. "I can¡¯t¡ not yet¡" he felt the cold of the metal cuff, which sent a sharp sting where his veins pulsed. It wasn¡¯t enough to hurt him, but it irritated him intensely. He grasped his curly hair, resting his arms on his thighs over his blue pants, covering his eyes with his palms. He tapped the back of his boot against the floor, trying once again to return to the darkness. But all he could feel was a faint buzzing in his ears, which slowly faded as he took a deep breath. Some time later, the vehicle finally stopped, and the two men in front of him stood up simultaneously. The young man lowered his hands and looked at them; one positioned himself by the door while the other simply stood, leaning against the wall with his back to the driver¡¯s cabin. ¨C Bai Hu, we¡¯re in formation. Proceed with Black¡¯s escort. A male voice came through a radio attached to the chest of the man in white camouflage. He turned to the other, who nodded. Then, he swiped a card through a reader by the door, which opened, revealing light and the sounds of heavy footsteps outside. ¡°Bai Hu? So that¡¯s what he¡¯s called...¡± Black, the handcuffed young man, watched the man in white camouflage position himself beside the one in gold, clearing the way to the exit. ¨C Now what? Should I go out? ¨C Black asked, trying to adjust his eyes to the bright light outside. The men didn¡¯t respond; they simply stood still. Black clicked his tongue and decided to head toward the door, rising and moving toward the blinding light. As he stepped onto the well-aligned ground outside the large black vehicle that displayed the same symbol as the men¡¯s uniforms, he felt fresh air fill his lungs. When his vision adjusted, he noticed the towering, reflective buildings, like a vast glass city. In front of him, a skyscraper seemed to reach the clouds. Around him, there were already eight agents armed similarly to the two men who had escorted him, but this time, their faces were visible. Among them were men and women with various skin tones. Black noticed that their eyes followed him until Bai Hu stepped down. He noticed that, at that moment, the agents'' behavior shifted; curious glances appeared, mixed with admiration and respect. However, when the other man, the one in golden camouflage, stepped down, some of their looks grew more intense; there was now a hint of fear as well. The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation. ¨C Fei Hu is here too...? The young man managed to catch an agent¡¯s whisper, who was quickly silenced by a light elbow jab from a colleague. As they stepped down, both positioned themselves on either side of Black, who, despite being lean, was taller than both of them. The agents moved ahead, creating a path and pushing aside the people near the entrance. ¡°Bai Hu and Fei Hu... Who are these guys? Are they enhanced ones?¡± Black''s eyes narrowed as he curiously observed the two, who walked in almost perfect sync. ¡°It doesn¡¯t matter now; I have to get out of here! It¡¯s the first time I¡¯ve been able to see the outside¡ It can¡¯t end like last time.¡± Memories flashed in his mind: he was running through trees in a dark forest, only catching glimpses of a white figure pursuing him. When he turned to try to strike, he felt the agonizing pain of a large electric shock coursing through his body. His fists clenched tightly; it wasn¡¯t just anger but also fear. ¡°I need to escape¡ The agents seem to fear Fei Hu more¡ I should be able to take down Bai Hu quickly and flee.¡± He paused for a second, looking at the two who were escorting him; his muscles flexed as he strained against the cuff, which showed a slight crack. Both Bai Hu and Fei Hu stopped, watching him with their fingers near the trigger. ¡°I will make it¡ no matter what!¡± Black readied himself, bending his legs to twist his body and strike with both fists. ¨C Daddy! I want to see the soldiers! The voice came from a boy being lifted up by a man. He was smiling and then hugged his father. It wasn¡¯t just them; many other people were walking nearby, observing the situation. Then, Black stopped, looking toward the boy. He slowly looked down at his hands, then took a step forward. ¡°I can¡¯t¡¡± he looked at the red LED. That color felt eerily familiar, almost frightening. It wasn¡¯t just a color; it was a texture, a smell, a sensation. ¡°I can¡¯t risk their lives¡¡± He lowered his head again and continued forward until he finally entered the massive doors of the skyscraper. Once inside the building, Black passed through an immense lobby with several attendants and a small crowd watching him. A human barrier had been set up to keep the public away, guiding him toward the elevators. His gaze captured every detail around him; he noticed the walls, a large sign reading ¡®Iovem,¡¯ white tiles, MDF counters, TVs on the walls, and the frightened, curious, and even hateful stares directed at him. He distanced himself from the people, watching the televisions mounted along the walls; all were tuned to the same channel, showing the morning news. ¨C A few weeks have passed since the incident at Freedom Valley. We¡¯re broadcasting from Tlamanalli, the center of New Atlantis. ¨C announced an attractive blonde woman, apparently the local news anchor. ¡°New Atlantis¡ Isn¡¯t that in America? Why am I here?¡± He approached one of the many elevators, with silver doors so clean that he could see his reflection as if in a mirror. However, his eyes remained focused on the television. Bai Hu stepped up to the elevator and pressed the square button, which lit up with a blue light; the indicator next to it showed the elevator was descending. ¨C There have been protests both for and against the integration of Biologically Enhanced Humans into the government across the state. ¨C the reporter announced, showing various images of protests, with signs reading, ¡®Enhanced ones are not human!¡¯ and ¡®All lives matter!¡¯. ¨C The commotion was significant enough to punish the young heroine Scarlet Flame, daughter of the Defender Red Dragon. This has also brought Evelyn¡¯s Treaty into the spotlight, especially regarding minors acting as Convergents¡¡± ¡°Evelyn¡¯s Treaty? What is that...? Doesn¡¯t matter; I need to know what will happen to me.¡± He looked at his reflection, his oval-shaped face, neatly trimmed hair, and his eyes with a dull yellow color, a slight unnatural glow, like ancient amber under faint light. The metallic door finally opened, and Fei Hu stepped in first, positioning himself to the right, with his back against the side of the elevator. Bai Hu then made a subtle gesture, indicating that Black should follow. Without hesitation, he stepped forward to the center. The elevator was spacious, with reinforced glass walls that reflected the soft ambient light. At the moment, all Black could see were the walls of the ground floor, illuminated only from above the door. He closed his eyes and intertwined his fingers, his lips curving slightly. Then, Bai Hu swiped a card over the authenticator and typed on the screen next to the entrance, selecting the only available floor: the eightieth. Black stayed in the center, and Fei Hu and Bai Hu watched him coldly, like statues that didn¡¯t move for even a second. ¡°I won¡¯t be caged¡¡± he stared at his reflection, noticing the faint yellow glow in his eyes. ¡°I won¡¯t go through that again¡¡± As the elevator passed the tenth floor, darkness was replaced by the brightness coming through the glass walls. He turned, and his eyes slowly adjusted to the light, widening as they finally adapted to the sun. The horizon was tinged yellow by the sun shining above him, with birds flying through the blue sky and an enormous air vehicle with a basket-like top. Buildings rose from the ground, some seeming to touch the heavens. Many of them were like giant mirrors, reflecting the entire city and the sun, creating the illusion of an endless metropolis. The streets were crowded with people walking, like tiny ants wandering in the distance. Multiple train lines ran between the buildings on tracks that wound through the city like veins. For a moment, Black was speechless; a glint of wonder appeared in his eyes, reflecting the city, and a slight, almost imperceptible smile formed at the corner of his mouth. ¨C Amazing¡ ¨C he whispered to himself but quickly returned to reality; after all, this paradise might very well turn into his hell. Ch. 1, Pt. 2: Breaking Shackles The metallic doors opened, and Black stepped away from the sunlight, entering the artificial light of the building. Before him stretched a vast white corridor with brown accents resembling wood along the lower edges. There were no doors along the path, and at the end was a wall that branched into two other corridors. In the center stood a group of seven agents, dressed similarly to those on the ground floor but not the same ones. They were in a triangular formation, and in the middle, an elderly man stood out, appearing to be in conversation with a Black agent sporting a goatee. The man had a slight smile at the corner of his mouth, but upon noticing the elevator''s arrival, he stopped speaking and adopted a completely serious expression. Fei Hu proceeded forward, while Bai Hu gestured with his hand for Black to follow, and Black stepped out of the elevator without question. ¡°More agents? What could come next?¡± The lavender scent in the corridor confused his senses, evoking the comforting feeling of a field of flowers mixed with the anxiety of the unknown ahead. ¨C So, this is the enhanced one? ¨C the old man asked, looking in Fei Hu¡¯s direction, who simply nodded. He turned his gaze to Black, who looked back with a stern expression. Then, in a disdainful tone, he continued. ¨C You call yourself Black? Is that even a name? Black studied the old man; his age was evident from the white, triangular beard and matching hair. He was stocky and wore a gleaming black military uniform with white accents. Circles connected by cables traced lines that glowed a faint blue across the uniform, matching the color of his eyes. On his chest, along with several insignias, was a golden emblem with a zero and Mandarin characters. ¨C You caused quite a stir, from what I read, even injured soldiers from the African Zero Division ¨C the old man said as he circled Black. ¨C So¡ what are you? What did Jupiter see in you that warranted sending you here? ¡°Who is this son of a bitch?¡± Black¡¯s eyes followed the old man as he spoke, especially noting the items on his chest. ¨C You know what I think...? ¨C the old man said with a serious tone. ¨C What? ¨C Black asked, his eyes sharp. A slight sneer appeared on the old man¡¯s face, as if it were personal. ¨C They should never have let a freak like you out of that cage¡¡± At the man¡¯s words, Black¡¯s eyes widened. Like a flash, memories came flooding back, hitting him like a car; he was immobilized and naked, able only to move his trembling eyes. Tubes were inserted into his orifices, especially one that went through his mouth down to his throat. His fists clenched tightly, and his muscles tensed; he broke the cuff binding him with ease. Then, he lunged toward the old man, preparing to deliver a right punch, drawing his arm back as he advanced. ¨C You bastard! Halfway there, Black was intercepted by Bai Hu, who caught his arm mid-swing. His opponent¡¯s grip was astonishingly strong, holding steady without the slightest tremor. Black¡¯s arm was pulled, bringing him face-to-face with Bai Hu. ¨C Out of my way! ¨C Black shouted. Then using the rotation to swing his left fist toward his opponent¡¯s face. Bai Hu, however, remained unaffected, dodging beneath Black¡¯s punch and then countering with a powerful left hook to the center of his torso. The impact¡¯s dull thud echoed through the corridor; a punch thrown with immense force. Black winced; the pain was clear on his face. He took a step back, attempting to retreat, but was quickly struck at the back of his left leg, forcing him to one knee. Then, another punch to his face caused blood to spill from his mouth. The old man remained motionless, his eyes fixed on Black, raising a hand to signal the other agents not to intervene. Bai Hu kept his fists clenched, watching Black, who was staring at the floor after the last hit. ¡°Why...?¡± Black looked at the drops of his own blood on the floor; his hands trembled as he leaned his body against the almost sterile ground, the red being the only thing out of place. ¡°What did I do so wrong? Why are they doing this to me!?¡± His lips pressed together, and tears formed in his eyes, but he lacked the strength to let them slide down his face. Then, the buzzing returned to his ear, gradually increasing. ¡°I¡¯m through! This must be their fault...¡± The dull glow of his eyes began to take on a more vivid hue, intensifying rapidly. He clenched his fists and slammed them against the tiles on the floor, which quickly cracked. ¡°IT¡¯S ALL THEIR FAULT!¡± Bai Hu noticed Black turn to face him, his eyes now shining with an unusual light, no longer that dull yellow but a vibrant shade. Black quickly advanced toward him with open hands. Then, Bai Hu threw another punch at his face, which landed squarely but didn¡¯t stop him. In fact, it seemed as if Black wasn¡¯t affected by the attack at all. Black¡¯s hands quickly reached Bai Hu¡¯s neck, lifting him off the ground with ease. Bai Hu delivered several kicks to Black¡¯s torso and attacked his face with punches, but Black didn¡¯t seem to feel any damage. Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. The old man gestured for the agents to surround Black, and they complied, forming a circle around him and aiming their weapons at him. ¡°Why am I holding back...?¡± Black felt almost numb; the buzzing nearly obscured his perception of the outside, as if he were watching everything through a screen, gradually losing control. ¡°I can¡¯t understand...¡± He slowly tightened his grip on Bai Hu¡¯s neck. Fei Hu pushed aside an agent who was in his way and moved toward the confrontation ahead, slowly clenching his fists. The force of the choking increased as Bai Hu struggled to break free, repeatedly attacking the arm that held him, but to no avail. ¡°Why does this feel so wrong...?¡± Then, for less than a second, Black saw his hands covered in blood; his eyes widened, and a pain surged, as if a needle pierced his brain. He then let Bai Hu go, staggering back with his hands over his head, breathing heavily. ¨C Get on your knees! ¨C commanded an agent who had previously been beside the old man, his voice imposing. ¨C Now! Black fell to his knees on the ground as the buzzing slowly faded from his ears. Sweat dripped from his forehead, and his eyes lost their shine, returning to that dull hue. He looked around; weapons pointed at him. In the agents¡¯ gazes, he could sense anger, but also fear. Something he had witnessed before. Images flooded his mind again, recalling the time he tried to escape; agents like these shot at him, and he felt the pain of the bullets, which didn¡¯t pierce his skin, only leaving light wounds. His clothes tore, and he tried to retreat until he retaliated, hitting a man who was thrown back several meters, screaming in pain. The agents recoiled, displaying the same look, the same fear. ¨C See? You¡¯re nothing but an uncontrollable monster, and deep down you know it. ¨C said the old man, circling the area as he stared at Black. ¨C It¡¯s better if you surrender; just say you accept the procedure of Division Zero... You¡¯ll be doing yourself and everyone here a favor. ¨C I... ¨C Black¡¯s deep, tired voice echoed through the profound silence. ¨C I... A smile began to form on the old man¡¯s face but quickly vanished when he heard a voice coming from the path behind him. ¨C I see you don¡¯t have good manners with guests! At the intersection of the corridor appeared the figure of a man. He wore a brown trench coat and a fedora hat. His face was covered by a metal mask with a black visor that resembled a carnival mask, but in a gray tone. ¨C Sergeant Maverick, could you explain to me what exactly is happening here? And you all, put those damn weapons down! ¨C said the man in the trench coat, directing his words at the old man and the agents as he approached with quick steps. The man in the trench coat approached Maverick, the old man. His walk was peculiar; he slightly opened his legs as he walked and leaned his body forward. The agents¡¯ gazes sought approval from Maverick, who simply nodded in agreement, keeping his eyes on the masked man. ¨C It¡¯s called the Tyx security protocol, in case you forgot ¨C said Maverick, watching the trench-coated figure pass by him. ¨C What I remember is that the kid is a guest! You know what you did could seriously complicate your career, right? ¨C questioned Tyx, stepping in front of the sergeant. ¨C I¡¯m doing my duty. ¨C replied the old man in a firm voice. ¨C All that happened was that the enhanced individual decided to attack, and we dealt with the threat; now everything is under control. Tyx stared at Maverick, then looked at Black, who was kneeling on the ground. ¨C Is that so? Then, Sergeant Maverick, I demand that you fulfill your duty, since the situation is under control; hand over custody of young Black. Black narrowed his eyes, shifting his gaze between Tyx and Maverick. The latter didn¡¯t seem intimidated, but his furrowed brow showed dissatisfaction. ¨C You know that¡¯s not how it works. The enhanced individual threatened the safety of this building. ¨C Maverick said, with a smirk, puffing up his chest as he spoke. ¨C Therefore, custody of him is once again entrusted to Division Zero. ¨C That would be true... ¨C Tyx replied, looking at Maverick¡¯s puffed-up figure. ¨C But only if there were any damage to property or individuals, and of course, you must attest that you were unable to carry out a simple escort. Maverick furrowed his brows, glaring at Tyx as he spoke. ¨C As far as I can see, none of your agents are injured; on the other hand, there is Black¡¯s blood on the floor... So, are you sure you want to proceed with this? ¨C Tyx finished his speech, looking at Maverick, who retracted his lips, slightly twitching his left eyelid as he moved closer to him. ¨C You¡¯re lucky, because if this case weren¡¯t under Jupiter¡¯s protection... things would be very different. ¨C the sergeant whispered near Tyx, who maintained his composure without being shaken. He then stepped away from him and ordered: ¨C Let him go! All the agents stepped back from Black, positioning themselves along the sides of the corridor. ¨C Let¡¯s go! ¨C declared Maverick, leaving the area with the other agents, who complied without question. Fei Hu and Bai Hu followed them as well, but the latter continued to stare at Black until the elevator doors closed. ¡°Who is this guy? Why do they obey him?¡± Black glared at Tyx with an eyebrow raised. Tyx approached him, offering a hand to help him up, but Black ignored the gesture and stood up on his own. ¨C I apologize for what happened, but I¡¯m afraid we have more urgent matters to address ¨C Tyx said. ¨C Are you okay? ¨C Who are you? ¨C the young man asked, staring at Tyx from head to toe while rubbing his arm, still feeling the pain from Bai Hu''s force. ¨C Are you an enhanced one, a convergent? ¨C I¡¯m a Defender, to be more exact. My name is Tyx, but I believe you already know that from our colleague, the white-haired sergeant. Tyx placed his hand on his mask, pressing two mechanisms on either side of it, removing it to reveal his face; he had a thin mustache, thin lips, and light brown skin. ¨C Why did you help me? ¨C Black asked seriously, wiping his lips. ¨C It¡¯s part of my job ¨C Tyx cleared his throat and replied in a light tone. ¨C Could you follow me? I have matters to discuss with you. ¨C And why should I do that? ¨C Black said, frowning. ¨C I don¡¯t know you, and I don¡¯t trust you; why should I follow you? ¨C Direct, I respect that ¨C Tyx replied, keeping a smile on his face. Turning his back to Black, he took a step away from him, remaining in the middle of the corridor. ¨C Listen, I know you have reasons to be suspicious. However, if you¡¯re unable to follow me for a simple conversation, maybe Maverick is right about you. ¡°Right about me...?¡± That question echoed in his mind as he lowered his head, staring at his open hands while remembering that glimpse. ¨C Alright... I¡¯ll go with you... ¨C Black said, lifting his head and clenching his fists. ¨C Perfect. ¨C Tyx replied with a smirk. ¨C Let¡¯s go; I need to introduce you to some people. ¨C Hey... Tyx, right? ¨C Black interrupted him, raising his head with an uncertain look. ¨C What is it? ¨C I... I¡¯m not what they say I am... ¨C Black said, looking away. Tyx stood still for a moment and then simply nodded slightly, a faint, contained smile appearing as they both walked down the corridor. Ch. 1, Pt. 3: The Order of Five ¡°Tyx...¡± Black was staring at the stride of the man in the trench coat ahead of him, following him through the corridor. ¡°He said he would introduce me to some people... Who?¡± They had already exited that old corridor and taken the right path, climbing twenty more floors to where they were now. It was a distinct passage, with arched walls and no doors, just a smooth, white wall. At the end, which was a good distance away, nothing could be seen but darkness. Each step echoed in the silent corridor, drawing closer to the inevitable darkness at its end. ¨C Have you eaten anything? ¨C Tyx asked, glancing sideways at Black. ¨C What? ¨C I asked if you¡¯ve had something to eat. You know breakfast is an important meal, right? ¨C Oh... yeah, if you can even call that food... ¨C Black said, stopping in the corridor with a furrowed brow. ¨C Are you really a Defender? Tyx stopped and turned to face Black, who was watching him with doubtful eyes. ¨C Do you think I''m lying? ¨C Yes, you don¡¯t fit the profile. ¨C Black replied instantly, crossing his arms as he spoke. ¨C You¡¯re too carefree and relaxed. Besides, they would never accept someone like you. Tyx scratched the side of his head, maintaining a casual smile as he lowered his head. ¨C And here I thought I would spend a morning without being reprimanded... ¨C Tyx replied lightly, shrugging. ¨C But what do you mean exactly by ¡°someone like me¡±? ¨C You have a problem with your legs; I saw how you walk. ¨C Black said, pointing with his chin at the man''s legs. ¨C Defenders would never accept a disabled person. Upon hearing the young man¡¯s words, Tyx laughed genuinely, lowering his head and hiding his face with his hat. ¨C What¡¯s so funny? ¨C Your honesty; after all, no one would speak to one of the five like that. ¨C Tyx replied, showing a smile that revealed slightly yellowed teeth. ¡°One of the five? Is he really a Defender? No... this can''t be right.¡± Black averted his gaze, staring at his distorted reflection on the tile. ¨C But I have to admit, you have sharp eyes. ¨C Tyx said, lifting the right hem of his pants to reveal a metal prosthetic. But it wasn¡¯t an ordinary prosthetic; it was as thick as a real leg and seemed to have a joint at the heel, allowing for complex movements. ¨C It will never replace a real leg, but the fact that I can buy my own coffee is already a victory. ¨C Tyx said, focused on his prosthetic and then looking at Black with an exaggerated smile. ¨C They always bought me coffee with cream, urgh... And I¡¯m more of a fan of plain coffee, you know, from where I come from... ¨C So, where are we going? ¨C Black interrupted Tyx, with drooping eyelids. ¨C Oh, right. ¨C Tyx cleared his throat. ¨C To a very special place. They both headed toward the darkness when several lights were turned on, revealing a huge double door that seemed to tell a story through its engravings. To the left, there was a scene of conflict; a war. Several soldiers were present, some fallen and others getting back up, their eyes shining as they held the American flag over various debris. To the right, there was a row of faces of men and women turned to the side, staring at a huge star in front of them. Below the star, two hands were shaking. In the center of the door, which occupied most of the surface, stood the imposing figure of a man and a woman dressed in simple clothing. Both had a glimmer in their eyes and were looking at each other. Behind each of them were the symbols of the moon and the sun. They held the edge of the engraving as if they were supporting it; in the center, there was a statue holding books in its left hand and a flaming sword in its right. Behind it, a vast city rose, with buildings reaching the clouds. The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation. ¨C What is this? ¨C Black asked, looking at the immense door in front of him. ¨C In war: duty. In peace: selflessness. ¨C Tyx said, first looking to the left, then to the right, and finally to the center. ¨C And in life: sacrifice... ¡°Wow.¡± Black stared at the engravings on the huge door; it was like a work of art coming to life. He turned his attention back to Tyx, who seemed focused but not exactly on the door, rather on something else. ¨C Are you okay? ¨C Black asked, raising an eyebrow. Tyx quickly cleared his throat and managed a smile. ¨C Of course... that¡¯s what it says in the building guide, in case you didn¡¯t know. Come on, I need to introduce you to some people. ¨C Tyx said, turning his back to the door, which made a noise and began to open. ¡°What was that just now?¡± Black stared at Tyx but then shifted his attention back to the door, expecting a dazzling light to shine through. In reality, the light was almost scarce; he could only see a huge figure, like a giant. For a moment, he swallowed hard, but within seconds the door opened fully, revealing a large oval hall; the walls appeared to be made of glass covering its extensive space, but they were covered. Now he could fully see the giant figure, which was an immense statue. It resembled a muscular man who appeared to be naked; he was kneeling, but one knee concealed his private parts. In his hands, he held up a massive globe, and on his back, there was a cloak made of numerous small, intertwined hands that stretched from the ground to his shoulders. ¨C Who is this? ¨C Black asked, astonished as he looked at the statue. ¨C This is the figure of Jupiter, your representation. ¨C Tyx replied seriously, also gazing at the enormous statue. ¡ª That on his chest is his symbol. The symbol was formed by an inverted triangle in the center of a white spiral that extended horizontally. ¡°So, this is the guy who took me out of Division Zero...¡± Black continued to stare at the statue with a certain fascination, then looked around the rest of the room. In the center, there was a large table that seemed to simulate the lower edge of the shadow cast by the massive globe raised by the statue, forming half of a circle that fit perfectly into the shadow projected by the light in the space. Around the table, there were five chairs, four of which were occupied. It was impossible to see the individuals sitting there, as the light coming from behind perfectly concealed them. In the center of the shadow cast by the globe, there was a reinforced chair and a well-polished wooden table, solitary amid the vast hall. Tyx gestured for Black to approach the central chair with a wave of his hand. He walked toward the table, observing the four who were seated. Black started from the left. The first was a man with slightly yellowed skin and an average height, dressed formally and wearing glasses. He had a slightly protruding forehead, with a large brow; his slanted black eyes matched his hair, which was short and neatly combed. He sat upright, quickly manipulating a computer. ¡°Why are his eyes like that?¡± Black glanced at him briefly before moving on to the next. The second was a Black woman, also of average height, with visible muscles. Her face was serious, and her eyes and hair were brown. The curly hair framed her face, while her full lips were painted red. She wore a gray jacket, a black shirt, and jeans. With her arms resting on the table and her fingers interlaced, she was the only one with a welcoming smile. ¡°What a beautiful woman...¡± Black almost smiled but held back. ¡°I can¡¯t forget that I¡¯m not here on my own accord.¡± The third, in the center, was a massive man, nearly three meters tall. His skin was white, and his body was muscular. His black eyes and triangular face were intimidating, resembling a draconian figure. The long beard and black hair tied back complemented his appearance. He was dressed in a tailored formal outfit and had his hands interlaced over the table, partially covering his mouth. ¡°He is... enormous...¡± Black stared at the man with sharp eyes. As they exchanged glances, the man frowned. ¡°Does he know me? No, that would be impossible.¡± The fourth man didn¡¯t seem as large as the third, but he was over two meters tall and muscular, resembling a bodybuilder. His skin was white, and his face had a square, well-defined shape. His goatee and blonde hair were neatly trimmed with a military cut. His yellow eyes were similar to Black¡¯s but with a vivid coloration. He wore a dress shirt, loose and comfortable pants, and sneakers. He was sitting with his arms crossed and legs open, leaning back in his chair. ¡°His eyes... are like mine...¡± Black locked eyes with the individual, and his eyes widened slightly. ¡°Is he just like me...?¡± Black remained standing in front of the table, sitting silently and alternating his gaze between the individuals. ¨C Black, welcome to the Order of Defenders. ¨C Tyx proclaimed. Finally, the last seat on the right was taken by Tyx. After sitting down, he looked at the other members, who nodded before turning their attention back to Black, who maintained a serious expression with his fists resting on his knees beneath the table. ¡°So this is it... What exactly do they want from me?¡± Black tried to keep his breathing steady, but his heart raced. ¡°I believe I¡¯m about to find out...¡± Ch. 1, Pt. 4: Breaking Point The yellow eyes stared at the five Defenders in front. Tyx stood up, along with the other Defenders; they all looked up toward Black. Confused, he also looked up, noticing a reflective glass platform. ¡°What the hell is this?¡± Black observed his own reflection before returning his attention forward. ¡°This certainly isn¡¯t just a mirror...¡± ¨C With everyone¡¯s consent, we will begin the session to discuss the situation of the biologically enhanced human self-named Black ¨C declared Tyx, standing straight. The other Defenders nodded, looking in his direction. ¨C This meeting is being recorded and transmitted to Division Zero as per the Evelyn Treaty, and it is being monitored by one of her agents. ¨C Tyx spoke while maintaining a prolonged gaze at the glass structure, and all the Defenders took their seats afterward. ¡°That Evelyn Treaty again... Is this some sort of law from Division Zero?¡± Black stared at the table with slightly furrowed brows, alternating his gaze between the Defenders, who held serious expressions. ¡°If even the Defenders follow it, things are more different than I imagined.¡± Tyx made a motion with both hands, pushing them apart. As he did this, a metallic device spun rapidly, splitting a laser light into two beams: one illuminated the object, and the other was directed at a holographic film. The interference created a complex light pattern, resulting in a massive hologram that formed before everyone, causing the young man to recoil quickly in his chair. ¨C What the hell is that!? ¨C exclaimed Black, jumping up from his chair and instinctively stepping back, his eyes wide. Information and a photo of him floated in the air, like on an enormous almost-transparent screen. ¡°Is this... a television?¡± ¨C You¡¯ve never seen a hologram, kid? ¨C asked the man at the far left, his voice calm and gentle. He had one hand on his chin, resting his head. ¡ª Don¡¯t worry, it¡¯s just a manipulation of light to create three-dimensional images. Please sit down. ¡°Hologram? Light? I understand even less now...¡± Black swallowed hard, slowly sitting back down as he watched what was being displayed in front of him. His blood type, measurements, medical exam results, and a representation of the African continent were shown, with an area in the north marked in red. ¨C This is what we know about you; it doesn¡¯t explain much. And since we have no jurisdiction over the African continent, ¨C said the man sitting in the center, in an imposing voice, crossing his arms and raising his chin. ¨C information about you is even scarcer, especially due to the conflict in the Red Desert. ¡°Red Desert conflict... I heard agents talking about that.¡± Black''s fists slowly clenched at the mention of that name. His eyes were lost, trying to reach a memory that was no longer there. ¨C Before we begin, I believe we should present our reality, of which the young man is unfamiliar ¨C said Tyx, looking at the man in the center, who gestured with his hand and nodded. This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it. ¨C Go ahead. Tyx moved his hands over the table, appearing to manipulate a device. The hologram changed, showing images of mirrored buildings, a massive concrete bridge, and finally, the actual image of the statue holding a sword depicted on the door. ¨C Do you know where we are? ¨C Tyx asked. ¨C In the Iovem building, in America, I think... ¨C Black replied with a shrug. ¨C At least that''s what I saw at the reception. ¨C North America, to be more precise. You are in Nova Atlantida, right in the district of Tlamanalli ¨C Tyx explained, raising his arm toward the seated individuals. ¨C These are the Defenders of the United States. The first on your left is the Visionary; the second is the Amazon; the third and our leader is the Red Dragon; the fourth is Titan; and finally, I am Tyx. ¡°Then he really is a Defender. It¡¯s hard to imagine; his posture is different from everyone else¡¯s.¡± Black adjusted in his chair as he observed the introduction of everyone present, ending with his gaze on Tyx. ¨C So, you don¡¯t know your real name? Do you remember if you have family or acquaintances? ¨C asked Titan, leaning forward in his chair and staring into the yellowish eyes that resembled his own. ¨C I can¡¯t remember... The things that come to mind are just blur... ¨C Black replied, alternating his gaze between Titan and his fists. ¨C Can I ask you something? ¨C We¡¯re the ones who ask the questions. ¨C said the Red Dragon, interrupting Black. ¨C You just answer. Titan glared at the center Defender, furrowing his brows and slightly shaking his head as he averted his gaze. ¡°So that¡¯s how it is... In the end, I¡¯m still just a prisoner.¡± Black curled his lips, slowly relaxing his fists. ¨C In your information, it says that your possible homeland is Libya. Do you know how you can speak our language fluently? ¨C asked the Amazon, in a friendly tone. ¨C I don¡¯t know, I just can. ¨C Black explained, opening his hands and then clenching them tightly, looking at Tyx. ¨C You said this would be a conversation, but it feels more like an interrogation! ¨C You better watch your tone! Don¡¯t forget that it¡¯s because of us that you¡¯re sitting here and not locked in a cage! ¨C replied the Red Dragon, with a voice imposing and distinct from the others. Despite the imposing tone, Black furrowed his brows and pressed his fists against the table. ¨C You want me to thank you for being in this damn interrogation!? Thank you for being your damn prisoner! ¨C Black exclaimed, slamming his fist on the table, shaking its entire structure. The Red Dragon made a gesture to stand up, but the Amazon lightly touched his hand, shaking her head negatively, and he sat back down. ¨C Listen, Black, we are the Defenders. We¡¯re here to help you; we just need to understand your situation better ¨C the Amazon replied. She gestured briefly with her hands, keeping her voice gentle and her expression welcoming. However, she was interrupted by Black. ¨C Help me!? I¡¯m trapped and don¡¯t even know why! ¨C Black retorted, gritting his teeth and rising from the chair, breathing deeply. ¨C I don¡¯t trust you! I remember a few things, and one of them is about you! Abavikeli bangababulali! His vision began to blur, and the buzzing echoed in his ears once again. He noticed that the Red Dragon had risen and was pointing his index finger at him. ¨C I... will not... go back to a damn cell...! ¨C Black shouted, trying to retreat, saliva dripping from his mouth as he spoke. ¡ª No... not again...! He put his hand on his head; his vision was so blurry that he could see nothing but silhouettes. Then, the buzzing transformed into pain, and he squeezed his eyes shut, trying to stifle the scream that was rising from his body. It felt as though he was falling deeply into his own subconscious; then, suddenly, everything turned to darkness. Ch. 1, Pt. 5: Drowned Everything felt so calm, as if he were sinking into the depths of an ocean. The sensation of being surrounded by the darkness of the unknown was so... comforting. Finally, thoughts began to emerge clearly in his mind, far from all that confusion, like a dive he must have experienced countless times before. The duality of peace and fear enveloped him; after all, he felt he had lived this before. In any case, this feeling calmed him. His eyes opened, and all he perceived was the absence of light, as if he were swimming in an ocean of pitch. He wished to sink slowly deeper and deeper until one day he could finally disappear. ¡°Why try to swim?¡± He was lost in every sense: no memories, no affections, no identity. Not even his name appeared in his mind. ¨C So there you are... He felt a gentle breath behind his ear that made his whole-body shudder. It was a sensation that should have irritated him, but in fact, he missed it. He would do anything to feel that again. ¡°Who are you?¡± Sometimes, he could hear that voice, a soft, feminine voice. It emerged like a dream amid his nightmares, an oasis in the desert that quenched his thirst and made him want to return. But to where, exactly? The feeling of the free wind running over his skin and the water touching his bare feet surrounded him. He could almost smell the sea, and a smile formed on his face. ¡°Was this ever real?¡± He wasn¡¯t sure, but did it matter? What is a life if you don¡¯t remember anything you did before? Would you still be someone or just an empty shell? Was it still worth moving forward? Questions and more questions... But no answers. His mouth opened slowly; he wanted to feel the darkness filling his lungs. Thus, he would sink faster, faster and faster. But he felt revulsion at tasting it; it was nothing pleasurable; in fact, it was perverse. His eyes widened, and he held his breath again. There was no more unknown; in fact, he recognized that color very well¡ªthe dark shade of that red. Then came the overwhelming weight of pressure on his body, making him move desperately. His effort, however, did not propel him forward. It was too viscous, too heavy, too wrong. There was nothing to guide him; after all, where was the bottom, and where was the surface? He was lost and hopeless. His whole body trembled, as there was no escape. Then he curled up like a child, hugging his legs and hiding his face. ¡°Is this the end?¡± he questioned, hugging himself with all his might. He closed his eyes, feeling his body slowly transform into part of it all. This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings. ¨C You can¡¯t just give up... The feminine voice caused a sharp pain in his head, making him open his eyes. Desperately, he searched for the source of the voice, but the only thing he found was a glow. Like a star twinkling in the void of space, a faint orange light that seemed unreachable. But now he was no longer hopeless; he had a new option... a path. ¡°I won¡¯t give up!¡± His arms began to move again with difficulty, and his teeth clenched from the effort. He slowly emerged, chasing the orange glow with all his strength. ¨C You¡¯re tired...? ¡°I am! Tired of everything!¡± His arms trembled, and his legs barely had any strength left. It felt like hours had passed, and his head throbbed. He wanted to give up, but he needed that voice, which came from the direction of the increasingly close glow. ¨C Then let me help you... He noticed that the glow intensified, and then he extended his hand with all his might, breaking through a thin, transparent layer. Grasping it, he propelled his body outward, finally escaping. Now he found himself coughing and vomiting a red liquid, slowly realizing he was not in an ocean but submerged in a desert. He was surrounded by an infinity of sand and demolished buildings, from which black smoke rose, obscuring the sun, allowing only a point of orange light to be visible in the sky. Slowly, he rose, observing various figures that seemed human but were, in fact, forms of sand with distorted outlines and features. They were disfigured and dismembered, and a reddish liquid dripped from them, staining the sand, which slowly absorbed it. ¡°Where am I? What is this!?¡± He found himself catatonic, looking around in search of that voice while coughing and trying to catch his breath. ¡°Where are you!?¡± The figures began to emit agonizing screams, moans of pain, and cries of despair. His eyes widened as he realized they were no longer static; they were crawling toward him. He quickly turned to run but spotted, in a destroyed house, a figure standing, hidden by the darkness of the place, about to enter the space. His eyes watered, and his whole body trembled. He wanted to flee, but it was impossible. The figure slowly turned its head in his direction, staring at him over its shoulder while the sand figures clutched his legs, trying to pull him under again. He tried to cry out for help, but the sound of his voice wouldn¡¯t come out; he only stared at the orange light in the sky. ¨C You know the sound of my voice... With all his strength, he tried to break free while looking at the sun, but gradually the figures pulled him down. Perhaps this was his end; he was sinking deeper and deeper. Everything was getting dark again. ¨C If you ever feel lost or afraid, remember me and... His vision was about to be covered by sand again, but the orange glow sparkled more intensely, and he could hear the voice very close to his ear: ¨C Wake up... He felt as if a vibration coursed through his entire brain. Then, his vision slowly adjusted to the light, as if he were awakening from a long sleep. Gradually, he became aware of his surroundings: the table in front of him was now shattered on the floor, and Tyx was facing away, arms spread wide like a human shield. He seemed to be in a heated discussion with the other Defenders. His head throbbed, as if his brain were about to explode at any moment. The buzzing gradually faded, and he looked at his fists, which were tightly clenched as he slowly crumpled to the ground, too weak to keep his body upright. ¡°Whose was that?¡± The voice was so familiar that he almost grasped that memory if only it weren''t lost in the confusing vortex of his mind. Then he hit the ground, and darkness came again, but this time it was not the kind that drowned him; it was merely the comforting stillness of his closed eyes. Ch. 1, Pt. 6: The Divine鈥檚 Representative The light was now pouring into the room through the glass, which was no longer covered. One could see the clouds passing by in the distance, and the sun was more present due to the time of day. In the center of the room, four people in light blue uniforms were clearing the debris from the table where Black had once been. The Defenders were seated, except for the Red Dragon, who was staring at the giant statue. They were waiting for the cleaning, which didn¡¯t take long to finish. When it finally ended, one of the workers turned to the Defenders and waved a hand toward them. However, only the Amazon responded, nodding her head and smiling. Quickly, that person was reprimanded by another from the group, and soon everyone left. Now, only the Defenders remained in the room. The platform above was covered with metal, obstructing the view of its interior. ¨C So, can we talk about what happened? ¨C the Amazon said, looking at the other Defenders. ¨C We should discuss it. ¨C Tyx replied, rising and moving to the center of the room, where the table had once been. He sat down in the reinforced chair, crossed his legs, and lit a cigarette. ¨C What are your questions? The Red Dragon, who had been facing away from everyone, hidden in the shadow of the statue, turned his face, looking at Tyx over his shoulders. ¨C Could you start by explaining exactly why Black isn¡¯t in one of our cells? ¡ª he asked, his voice deep and his eyes fixed on Tyx. ¨C It¡¯s simple, Conrad... ¨C Tyx said, taking a drag from his freshly lit cigarette and letting the smoke escape from his mouth. ¨C You have no decision-making power in this matter. Conrad, the Red Dragon, turned at hearing such a statement, walking toward his place. He placed his hand on the back of the chair, gripping it tightly and stepping back, making room at the table. ¨C Is that so? ¨C Conrad said, resting his clenched fists on the table and staring directly at Tyx. ¨C And since when do you interfere in matters related to the Guardians? The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation. ¨C This was a direct choice from Jupiter. ¨C Tyx replied, looking at the large statue in front of him and then meeting Conrad¡¯s gaze. ¨C He assigned me to handle this case, and no one but me has the authority to decide on it. After Tyx¡¯s statement, all the Defenders, except for the Visionary, stared at him. The Amazon raised her eyebrows, her expression one of surprise; Titan had his eyes half-closed, and Conrad slightly furrowed his brow. ¨C And why exactly did he put you in charge? ¨C Titan asked directly to Tyx, leaning forward in his chair. ¨C Perhaps because I¡¯m smarter than the Visionary, and of course, the most handsome one here. ¨C Tyx said, stroking his facial hair as he smiled, but then he straightened up and replied seriously. ¨C To tell the truth, I have no idea either, but perhaps he¡¯s looking for a less conventional solution to the matter. ¨C I¡¯ll check this directly with Jupiter. It¡¯s impossible that he would have done something so... unthinkable. ¨C Conrad expressed, shaking his head slightly. ¨C There¡¯s no need. I¡¯ve already sent all the signed documents to you. ¨C the Visionary replied, leaning back and adjusting his glasses. ¨C This was indeed the decision made by Guardian Jupiter. ¨C What a surprise to see you take Tyx¡¯s side. ¨C Titan said, with a forced smile as he crossed his arms. ¨C The decision came from Jupiter; I¡¯m just doing my job. ¨C the Visionary replied, not even looking at Titan, but soon his eyes turned to him. ¨C But you¡¯ve known him for quite a while, haven¡¯t you? Do you think this decision of his might be questionable? There was a silence for a few seconds as Titan stared at the Visionary with furrowed brows and slightly pursed lips. Conrad was focused on a fixed screen on the table, shaking his head slightly with a smile and then raising his eyes to meet Tyx¡¯s gaze. ¨C Yeah, it seems Jupiter really made the stupid decision to leave an intercontinental issue in your hands. ¨C Conrad said, maintaining his forced smile. ¨C So, can we proceed? I believe we all have access to the young man¡¯s data and can finally discuss what really matters here ¨C the Amazon questioned, standing up and looking at everyone. ¨C You¡¯re in charge, dear. ¨C Tyx said, nodding his head and displaying a slight smile. ¨C Don¡¯t call me that; we¡¯re not close to each other. ¨C the Amazon replied, sitting back down in her place. Tyx let out a smile, opened a pack of cigarettes, and placed the used cigarette inside. He then leaned forward, adopting a serious demeanor. ¨C So, let¡¯s get to what really matters here. ¨C he said, with a calm but serious voice. All the other Defenders turned their attention to him as the light reflected on the floor illuminated part of his figure, completely hiding the other part. Ch. 1, Pt. 7: Cards on the Table ¨C So, what do you think of the kid? ¨C Tyx asked, shifting his gaze between everyone present. ¨C He¡¯s certainly scared and doesn¡¯t seem to control his emotions very well. ¨C the Amazon said, clasping her hands with a worried look. ¨C That¡¯s a problem, and it makes me question again: why did you put him in a dormitory instead of a cell? ¨C Conrad inquired, sitting back in his chair with his hands clasped on the table, hiding his mouth. ¨C The kid deserves a good sleep; it¡¯s enough of treating him like a lab rat. ¨C Tyx replied seriously, addressing Conrad. ¨C He¡¯s being monitored by the cameras; that¡¯s already enough. ¨C Are you going to stop stalling and get straight to the point? Or are you going to sit here wasting time all day? ¨C Titan said, pursing his lips and crossing his arms. ¨C Just tell us what you know about the kid. Tyx took a deep breath and pulled out a black rectangular object with a glowing circle at the end that emitted intense white light. As the circle began to spin, a laser projected, reflecting off the central glass and creating a bluish hologram that floated in the air, pulsing softly as if it were alive. It displayed the image of Black again. ¨C The curiosity of this case is that Black was not exactly classified as a Biologically Enhanced Human by Division Zero. ¨C Tyx said, looking towards Titan. ¨C They might be wrong; he could just be a mutated individual, like the Visionary ¨C Titan replied, opposing Tyx and keeping his arms crossed with a serious expression. ¨C Generally, mutants display physical characteristics that are decisive for the utilization of their abilities. ¨C the Visionary responded while accessing a screen, moving his fingers quickly. ¨C And you, big head? I don¡¯t see any physical characteristic in you besides that enormous forehead of yours. ¨C Titan retorted, leaning back in his chair to get a better look at the Visionary. ¨C That¡¯s the point. My head might be slightly larger than average, but in my mutation, only my brain was affected. ¨C the Visionary replied, not losing focus on what he was doing. ¨C Which does not apply to Black. If he has strength and endurance beyond human capacity, his body should demonstrate that through mutation. You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author. ¨C I know that; you don¡¯t need to explain every detail, you nerd. ¨C Titan said, shaking his head and looking away. ¨C It doesn¡¯t seem like you retain such knowledge; you overlooked something essential about Black. ¨C the Visionary asserted, quickly shutting off the screen as if his fingers were moving on their own. ¨C His eyes were yellow. ¨C You¡¯re right! He must be using the Absolute Apex, so he has to be an BEH. ¨C the Amazon said, nodding her head in agreement towards the Visionary. ¨C That¡¯s where the problem lies: mutants cannot reach the Absolute Apex because, unlike the awakened, the mutation has already affected their DNA in an irreversible way. ¨C the Visionary explained, adjusting his glasses that reflected the light, obscuring the view of his eyes. ¨C That¡¯s why they don¡¯t have a stigma and cannot be on the Power Variation Index, as per Khalarran''s method; much less reach the Absolute Apex. ¨C So, what is he? A new type of mutant? Or a very different awakened? ¨C Titan asked, shrugging his shoulders. ¨C I don¡¯t know, but I believe he is neither. ¨C the Visionary replied, resting his chin on his clenched fist. ¨C After all, no containment method was effective; they only managed to capture him through brute force and heavy machinery. ¨C They used ISV and the ACF? Damn it, no wonder he¡¯s so agitated¨C Titan said, lowering his gaze and pressing his lips together. ¨C Those sons of bitches from Division Zero! Fuck! Titan stood up from his chair, shaking his head and running his hand through his hair. The Amazon took a deep breath and bowed her head upon hearing this. ¨C It was necessary; they needed to know what they were dealing with. However, since the young man¡¯s skin was very tough, they had to use... less conventional methods. ¨C the Visionary said, staring off into space as if focused on something else. ¨C In any case, the Intravenous Suppressive Vaccine and the Ability Compression Formula were unable to suppress Black¡¯s abilities. ¨C Goddamit! How can you be so calm knowing what they did to him!? ¨C Titan exclaimed, turning and glaring at the Visionary. ¨C Someone here has to think objectively, considering the results instead of getting carried away by emotions... ¨C the Visionary replied, also glaring back at Titan. ¨C Enough! ¨C Conrad interjected, looking at both of them, who fell silent. ¨C We are losing focus! And you, Tyx, are you just going to stay quiet!? ¨C I like to hear other people''s opinions, but very well, let me explain how I see this ¨C Tyx said, leaning back in his chair and looking at the hologram. ¨C From what I could analyze, the young man is indeed not an BHE, whether mutant or awakened. Tyx stood up and began to walk around the room until he reached the front of the Defenders'' table, leaving the device displaying Black¡¯s image on it. ¨C I was investigating old cases to see if anything resembled this one. And something came to mind... ¨C Tyx continued as he returned to his upright posture and adjusted his hat. ¨C What do you know about Idealer K?mpfer? Tyx''s question echoed through the hall, and then silence enveloped the place once more. Ch. 1, Pt. 8: Idealer K?mpfer ¨C Why did you mention that? ¨C Titan took on a serious, almost threatening posture, his sharp eyes focused. ¨C I don¡¯t know much about the subject, as it seems to be something almost impossible to find information on ¨C Tyx replied, walking toward the mirrored walls that reflected the city below, illuminated by the sun shining on the buildings. ¨C But what I do know is that during the Second World War, the Nazis also conducted experiments on prisoners and soldiers in an attempt to create enhanced individuals. What they called... ¨C Idealer K?mpfer... I know, I was there... ¨C Titan interrupted, sighing as he sat down and stared at the floor. He grabbed a small metal canteen from his pocket and took a drink. ¨C An attempt not only to control the body but also the mind... Those bastards wanted to create super soldiers to change the tide of battle. Which didn¡¯t quite work out... Everyone in the room fell silent for a moment. The Visionary kept his attention on Tyx, the Amazon pressed her lips together with a sad look directed at Titan, and Conrad simply stared at the floor. ¨C Yeah, you don¡¯t seem to know more than we have on record, but I know that much of the German research was integrated by the government of that time, even granting amnesty to some. As was the case with Khalarran, who, although many do not know, also conducted experiments on BHE¡¯s ¨C Tyx said, observing the city''s splendor and slightly curving the corner of his mouth. ¨C That made me wonder: what happened to the Idealer K?mpfer research? ¨C Are you trying to say that someone might be creating enhanced individuals out there? ¨C Conrad asked, looking toward Tyx, who was obscured by the light; only his silhouette was visible. ¨C Maybe. Black doesn¡¯t fit any logic we know about BHE¡¯s. His eyes are yellow, so technically, he should be classified as Gamma on the Power Variation Index. But the most important thing is that it is ridiculously difficult to perfect and maintain the Absolute Apex. ¨C Tyx said, running his hand through his goatee and then turning his attention back to everyone. ¨C The only person we know who was able to do that is Titan, and it took him over a decade to exhibit those yellow eyes around. ¨C And there¡¯s another thing. ¨C declared the Visionary, causing everyone to shift their attention to him. ¨C This young man doesn¡¯t seem to be from Libya, which is strange. After all, what was he doing there? ¨C How are you sure of that? ¨C the Amazon asked, her eyes curious. ¨C "Abavikeli bangababulali" was what he said, which means "Defenders are killers." ¨C the Visionary explained, looking into the Amazon''s eyes. ¨C That language is Zulu, commonly spoken in South Africa, not in the North. ¨C So he could be South African? How did Division Zero not discover this? ¨C the Amazon questioned, keeping her gaze fixed on the Visionary. ¨C And how did he end up in a conflict in Libya? ¨C I believe that, since they had limited time with him, they decided to try to figure out what they were dealing with instead of who he really was. ¨C the Visionary replied, with his hand open toward the Amazon. ¨C There¡¯s no way to be certain, but what intrigues me is Black¡¯s impression of the African Defenders. Hearing this, the Amazon clenched her fists tightly; her expression was clearly one of frustration. ¨C We all know that the African Defenders are basically military. Maybe the young man has information about them, who knows? ¨C Tyx said, pacing the room in front of everyone. ¨C In the Division Zero report, it was stated that it was not them who found Black, but rather the Defender White Ray. ¨C Titan asserted, continuing to drink from his canteen. ¨C It was written that he was injured and had burns from electricity. This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it ¨C Is it possible that they are involved in something? It doesn¡¯t make sense for a Defender to deal directly with something like this. ¨C the Amazon said, staring at the floor with furrowed brows. ¨C You¡¯re just assuming things; you can¡¯t just accuse someone of something like that. ¨C Conrad said, placing a hand on his forehead and shaking his head. ¨C This is turning into a mess. Tyx nodded slowly and then put his hand in his pocket, grabbing a cellphone and sliding his thumb to the right on the screen. With that, the holographic image changed, now showing dark skin with a marking that looked like a circle with a line running from the center down through it. Upon noticing this, Titan''s eyes widened as if he had seen a ghost, and his mouth opened for a brief moment. Tyx noticed and looked toward him, nodding his head. ¨C I believe you know this symbol well; it doesn¡¯t look like a birthmark. ¨C Tyx said, bringing the holographic device closer to everyone. ¨C It looks like a circle, but why does it have that line in the middle? ¨C the Amazon questioned, leaning over the table for a better look. ¨C It¡¯s not a circle... it¡¯s the damn snake. ¨C Titan replied, shaking his head and clenching his teeth. ¨C Project Ouroboros... Tyx locked his cellphone, and the hologram disappeared. Everyone looked at him as he returned to the center of the room and sat in that solitary chair. ¨C This is the advantage of having a grandpa in the room. ¨C Tyx said, taking out his wallet again and lighting a cigarette. ¨C That¡¯s exactly it, but I couldn¡¯t find much else beyond that. ¨C And what is this Project Ouroboros? ¨C the Amazon asked, looking toward Titan, who was deep in thought with a look of anger. ¨C It¡¯s a project that ANSA pretends never happened. It had a similar purpose to that of Idealer K?mpfer, but in this case, they used torture and drugs to try to control the minds of enhanced individuals. They claim to have shut down the project in 1973 ¨C Titan replied, rising with fury in his eyes. ¨C This can¡¯t stand! We have to do something! They are certainly involved! ¨C We can¡¯t! Not yet. We need concrete evidence; what we have isn¡¯t enough. ¨C Conrad said, also standing up and facing Titan. ¨C However, we already have a lead; let¡¯s start from there. ¨C Maybe that¡¯s why Jupiter sent the boy here. No one would go against his influence, and he might have realized that something was wrong. ¨C Tyx said as he took a drag from his cigarette and looked at the large statue in front of him. ¨C The boy is our best lead; if he can remember what happened, we¡¯ll have definitive proof. All the Defenders nodded in agreement, and those who were standing sat down again. ¨C I completely agree with you, Tyx. So, as you yourself recognize, Black is essential to this investigation. ¨C Conrad said, opening his hands and looking seriously at Tyx. ¨C We must keep him under maximum surveillance every day. ¨C I was thinking of integrating him into the aides. ¨C Tyx replied, with a slight smile as he crossed his legs again and pointed the cigarette at Conrad, who frowned. ¨C You must be joking! Do you want him to leave the building and walk the streets!? What if something happens? What if he runs away!? ¨C Conrad exclaimed, clenching his fists on the table. ¨C We don¡¯t even know if he is trustworthy or mentally stable! You know what happened when we let our guard down like that; we have to keep him under surveillance! ¨C Remember what I told you, Conrad? You have no power in this decision. I was specifically assigned to handle this case. ¨C Tyx said, leaning forward in his chair but lowering his head. ¨C I haven¡¯t forgotten what happened, but we can¡¯t live in the past and put all the mistakes of that bastard on the boy¡¯s shoulders. He deserves a chance. ¨C And how exactly will integrating him into the Aides help? ¨C Conrad was agitated, pressing his fists against the table. ¨C The boy seems to have been through a lot, and do you know what the best remedy for that is? ¨C Tyx questioned, staring at Conrad. ¨C Time and companionship. Let¡¯s show him that we are not what he thinks we are; he¡¯s not just a clue to a case, he¡¯s a human being too. Conrad hung his head for a moment, looking at the gold ring on his finger and then hiding it with his other hand; then he nodded. ¨C Fine. And how exactly are you going to handle him? Are you just going to integrate him into the aides? ¨C Conrad asked, crossing his arms. ¨C Don¡¯t worry about that; it¡¯s all planned out. He will receive intensive training, and when he¡¯s ready, he¡¯ll be able to act as a convergent. ¨C Tyx replied, taking another drag and getting up from the chair, heading for the exit while waving his hand. ¨C The Visionary will send the measures taken to you, and don¡¯t worry; I have someone special in mind to work with him. ¨C Who are you talking about? ¨C Conrad questioned, raising an eyebrow. Tyx didn¡¯t answer, just showing a slight smile as he looked at Conrad before putting his metal mask back on. ¨C You wouldn¡¯t do that... ¨C Conrad said, his voice irritated. Conrad¡¯s remark was met only by a tip of Tyx¡¯s hat as he left the room. The door moved slowly, still revealing his figure until it finally closed. Ch. 2, Pt. 1: Just another day The dark brown eyes opened slowly to the sound of the phone alarm, which played a calm melody with bird sounds. The thin, slightly hunched figure of the young man, a bit below average height, sat up on the single bed. His straight black hair completely covered his face. He grabbed the phone from the simple nightstand beside his bed, whose sheets were faded, trying to look at the alarm, which displayed a message: ¡®6:00 - Wake up for another day!¡¯ ¨C Nothing yet¡? ¨C he whispered to himself, his voice slightly hoarse, as he swiped his finger across the cracked screen to turn off the alarm, then glanced at the notification bar. Scratching his head, he got up and slipped on his sandals. He yawned and ran a hand over his hair, revealing only part of his almost pale face, with dead fish eyes, as he hung his head low. ¨C More than two months¡ ¨C he whispered to himself, looking at a message from an unknown number that read: ¡®I¡¯ll be in touch.¡¯ ¨C Be in touch, my ass¡ He turned to the old wooden dresser, where a picture frame hid the photo. He raised his hand towards it, attempting to reach it but quickly gave up. He slowly exited the room, whose walls were painted a faded gray, and the window seemed jammed. Upon leaving the bedroom, he found himself in the living room combined with the kitchen, where old furniture and basic appliances dominated the sparsely decorated space. A strong smell of cheap detergent invaded his nostrils, prompting him to pinch them shut with two fingers as he headed towards the bathroom with an annoyed expression. ¨C Urgh, Mom¡ why always that fragrance? ¨C he murmured as he entered the bathroom and shut the door behind him. It was a cramped bathroom, with a sink whose faucet dripped slightly, a mirror with stains around the edge that reflected the dim ceiling light, a towel rack, and a corner shower enclosed by a curtain adorned with yellow ducks. He approached the mirror and opened it, revealing various medications, a tube of toothpaste, and two toothbrushes. His eyes lingered on the medications; his eyelids drooped, and his gaze remained dull for a brief moment. But he soon picked up his toothbrush, applied toothpaste, closed the mirror, then moved to the shower and turned on the water as he began to wash. A while later, he was already dressed in a black long-sleeved shirt with a print from a rock band called Knights of The Dark Realm, faded jeans with rips at the knees, black sneakers, and a dark brown backpack. His hair was still messy; however, he had styled his bangs to cover only his right eye. He went over to the table, where a note read: ¡®I left your breakfast ready on the counter. Have a great day, dear! P.S.: Demian, please don¡¯t forget to take out the trash; you know how our little rascal is!¡¯ The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation. A slight smile crossed his face as he read the note. Then he looked over at the counter, and, noticing there was nothing there, scratched his head and opened his mouth, letting gravity pull his jaw down. ¨CI don¡¯t believe it¡ ¨C Demian said, moving behind the counter, where he found a frying pan on the floor with the lid far from it and a black cat licking her paws. ¨C Panther! The cat didn¡¯t even look at the boy and kept grooming herself, until he crouched down, picked her up by her front paws, and looked her in the eyes. ¨C Did you eat my breakfast? ¨C he asked, staring directly into the cat¡¯s eyes, who just stared back and meowed. ¨C You¡¯ve turned into a girl with terrible manners¡ The cat blinked her eyes and placed a paw over the boy¡¯s mouth, and he just lowered his head, saying with a forced tone of sadness. ¨C It smells like my bacon¡ If you think you¡¯ll get away with it this time, you¡¯re sorely mistaken; today you will know my wrath. The cat continued to stare at him, tilting her head with her green eyes and dilated pupils. ¨C You¡ you¡ are lucky you¡¯re so cute and that I¡¯m running late. ¨C He said, lifting his head with a sigh. He placed the cat on the floor and petted her head while she resumed grooming herself. ¨C But this is the last time you get away with it. Quickly, he picked up the frying pan and the lid, setting them in the sink, then pulled out his phone, which read 6:43 a.m. ¨C Oh, crap¡ ¨C He muttered, glancing at the cat, who seemed unfazed by his presence. ¨C I¡¯ll have to eat on the way; I hope you feel guilty. He took a deep breath, sighed, and hurried toward the apartment door. He opened it with difficulty and shut it behind him, while the cat continued grooming herself and meowed once more. Demian dashed down the corridor of the old building, which had several other apartments besides his own. At the end of the hall, there was an elevator with a sign reading: "Permanently under maintenance." He headed for the stairs, passing by a few neighbors; one was sweeping in front of their apartment, and another was double-checking that their door was locked. The neighborhood was a blend of cultures, with local shops, small restaurants, and stores beginning to open around that time. The streets were bustling; some people were chatting, others opening their businesses, and Demian ran toward the bus stop, where passengers were already boarding. ¨C It¡¯s my lucky day¡¨C he murmured to himself, sprinting toward the bus. He moved quickly but ended up lightly bumping into a man who was boarding, nodding his head in apology. ¨C Watch where you¡¯re going, kid! ¨C the man said, rolling his eyes and shaking his head. ¨C I¡¯m really sorry¡ Soon, everyone was inside, and Demian made his way to the back of the bus, avoiding eye contact with the other passengers. He put on his headphones and began gazing out the window. The city bus moved through the district. The sun was rising, though it was hidden by the residential buildings. His gaze focused on the ads on the walls and billboards; many were about products and people, but mostly about Convergence. One ad showed a man and a woman, both smiling and posing with a spark in their eyes. Behind them was the silhouette of a man flying with a cape, and the title read: ¡®Have you discovered yourself a Biologically Enhanced Human? Serve your country! Become a hero too!¡¯ He followed the ad with a hint of admiration, but soon returned to his usual expression. Glancing again at the message, ¡®I will be in touch.¡¯ he sighed as the bus left East Aurora, heading toward its destination: the district of Tlamanalli, the heart of Nova Atlantis. Ch. 2, Pt. 2: Echoes of an Unattainable Desire ¡®Another month without a reply¡ Did I mess everything up?¡¯ Demian typed on his phone, looking out the window at the intensely shining sun. As he moved further from East Aurora, the scenery slowly changed; the colorful residential buildings faded like distant memories, giving way to tall, modern structures; these imposing and cold buildings replaced all that small family shops with large corporations. Giant ads reflected promises of a vibrant future, while the city¡¯s noise pulsed around him. ¡®Which it¡¯s not unusual¡ I think I somehow disappointed him.¡¯ His eyes seemed tired, and he turned up the volume of his music to drown out the world around him as the bus headed toward the heart of the city. ¡®Why is it always like this? I can never do anything right¡ Sometimes I wonder if the world would be a better place without me¡¡¯ He got off the bus and headed toward a large center. A few minutes later, Demian found himself leaning on an overpass, sipping a milkshake; a panoramic view of the city stretched out before him: cars moving in constant flow, holographic ads floating in the air, and the subway crossing tracks that snaked across the metropolis. Yet, his focus was on the people passing by on the enormous walkway. There was an impressive variety of people: girls and boys wearing colorful, bold outfits, men and women in suits talking on their phones as if they were in important meetings. Most faces were glued to the glowing screens of their phones. But there were still smiles and companionship, especially among the younger ones, who seemed to form an invisible bond uniting everyone there. He, on the other hand, remained alone, facing away from the city, feeling out of place in that vibrant world. ¡®I wonder what their lives are like, surrounded by friends and girls. It¡¯s as if, even in the same space, the world spins differently for each of us.¡¯ He typed on his phone as he watched a group of well-dressed young people in team jackets, surrounded by girls who smiled enthusiastically. He could almost imagine himself among them, closing his eyes briefly and listening to their animated chatter. They exchanged laughs and gestures of excitement with each other. Among them, a tall Black young man stood out, holding a beautiful girl close and wrapping his arm around her waist. ¡®I wish I could be like him¡ If I were, maybe things could be different¡¡¯ He typed, then his eyes fixed on that couple in particular; he glanced at the girl¡¯s skirt before lowering his gaze to the ground. ¡®But deep down, I know I don¡¯t deserve any of that¡¡¯ His tired eyes were watching each character typed on the phone screen when he felt the collar of his shirt being yanked hard. Startled, he noticed that two guys from that group were standing in front of him. Both had the build of athletes: one was blond, and the other had darker skin. ¨C What are you doing? Taking sneaky little pics, huh? ¨Csaid the darker-skinned one, confronting him. Demian leaned back, trying to escape, but soon another guy stepped up beside him, preventing him from moving away. With frightened eyes, he looked around, almost pleading for help. However, people nearby completely ignored the situation, their eyes glued to their cell phones. I didn¡¯t¡¨C Demian tried to back away, glancing between the two, feeling his throat tighten. ¨C This is just... a misunderstanding. ¨C Oh yeah? Then why the hell were you staring at Carly? Answer you freak! ¨C asked the blond guy, grabbing Demian¡¯s phone from his hand. Demian tried to snatch it back, but the darker-skinned guy shoved him by the neck, making him freeze and nearly drop his drink. ¨C Did he take any pics of her? ¨C asked the darker-skinned guy, looking over at the blond one, who examined the screen seriously but quickly broke into a smile. He started laughing and gestured for the other guy to come over. He obliged while Demian put a hand to his neck, trying to calm his breathing. ¨C Nah, nothing like that! This wuss is probably writing poetry. ¨C said the blond guy, pointing at the phone with a grin. The other looked at the screen and started laughing too. ¨C Check this shit out! ¨C That¡¯s mine... Give it back! ¨C Demian demanded, trying to move. But the darker-skinned guy put a hand on his shoulder, squeezing it with a slight smirk. ¨C Relax, emo. What¡¯s the rush? Demian lowered his head, pursing his lips and staring at the ground while his hand slowly crushed his drink cup. ¨C What the hell is this? ¡®I wish I could be like him. ¨C the darker-skinned guy mocked, reading out loud in a mocking tone. ¨C What you¡¯re writing is loser stuff. Man up, emo. ¨C You¡¯ve probably never even seen a pair of tities, huh? What a virgin. ¨C the blond guy taunted with a smile. Demian closed his eyes, his hand shaking as he listened to their laughter and felt the taps on his head, which started light but eventually got harder. ¨C Cut that crap! The command came with a slap to the head of the darker-skinned guy, who turned around with a look of annoyance. The blond guy just stepped back. Demian opened his eyes and saw the tall Black guy from before taking the phone out of the blond guy¡¯s hand and holding it out toward him. ¨C Here, take it. ¨C he said with a neutral expression, looking at Demian, who was still backed up. ¨C Sorry about that. He slowly grabbed his phone and nodded, looking at the Black guy who pulled the other two under his arms, forcing them to step away. His gaze followed the Black guy with a hint of admiration as he walked off. Demian turned in the opposite direction, preparing to type, a slight smile on his face. ¨C If you''re gonna mess with a retard, at least do it somewhere discreet. Demian overheard the Black guy¡¯s parting words as he now laughed with the other two. He squeezed his drink cup tighter when his phone vibrated with a notification. The three guys started to laugh quietly, only to be interrupted as a milkshake cup hit them from behind, splattering across their clothes. ¨C What the hell?! ¨C shouted the Black guy. They all turned to look at Demian, who stood in a throwing stance, phone in hand and a crooked smile on his face. ¨C Screw you all... I wanted things to be different. ¨C Demian murmured, looking at the ground. ¨C But it¡¯ll never be different, and honestly, I think I prefer it that way. ¨C What the hell are you talking about?! ¨C the blond guy asked, inspecting the stain on his clothes. ¨C I¡¯m not talking to you; I¡¯m talking to myself. ¨C Demian replied, flashing a grin and flipping them off. ¨C For you guys: hope you enjoy strawberry flavor and go fuck yourselves! ¨C Son of a... You¡¯re dead! ¨C yelled the Black guy, shoving the other two forward as they started to chase after him. ¨C Get him! Demian quickly ran down the walkway toward the elevated platform leading to the metro entrance. As he climbed, he vaulted over a silver metal bar, pushing off with impressive agility. The darker-skinned guy nearly kept pace but stumbled when he tried to jump the bar, which broke as if it had rusted over for years, sending him tumbling to the ground. ¨C My grandma could run faster than you idiots! And she used a wheelchair! ¨C Demian taunted as he climbed up, looking back and weaving through people who barely noticed what was happening. The blond guy lagged behind, helping his friend who had fallen. However, the Black guy kept pushing forward, shoving his way through the crowd with difficulty due to his size. When he finally reached the metro platform, bumping into a few people, he spotted Demian already inside a train car. As he tried to reach him, the doors closed. Demian made a mock crying face with his hand and a sad expression before grinning and flipping him off once more. As the train began to move, he exhaled, smiling. ¨C Finally¡ The words left his lips like a sigh of relief. He leaned against the door, looking at his phone, which showed a message from an unknown number: ¡®Demian, I need you to come to the Ioven building. We have matters to discuss.¡¯ Ch. 2, Pt. 3: The Sand Castle Princess The phone alarm went off at six in the morning, playing an upbeat and energetic song, a burst of energy in sound waves meant to wake anyone up. However, the bed was already empty. The lights were on, and the view of the sunrise looked like a huge painting on the floor-to-ceiling glass window in the room. The music continued to play, and faint thuds could be heard from beyond the open door. She focused every movement on her punches, her eyes fixed on the punching bag. Her fists threw right hooks, lefts, and then a right again. Sweat dripped from her forehead as the large punching bag took the hits, moving slightly on its ceiling track from the impact. She breathed through her mouth, panting, her red hair tied back in a ponytail. In her ears, in-ear headphones played an immersive composition, notes weaving into a sonic tapestry of melancholy and hope dancing in perfect harmony. Right punch, left punch, dodge, and finally a spinning kick. The punching bag shifted slightly out of place. ¡°Damn it!¡± Her voice was soft but irritated; she remained focused on the punching bag; her fists clenched. She relaxed her stance for a moment and looked at the boxing gloves resting on a backpack on a nearby bench. ¡°It¡¯s my fault for being so impulsive¡¡± She walked over to the gloves, staring at them for a moment before slipping them on and returning to face the bag. ¨C I need to learn to control my emotions¡ She closed her eyes, pursing her lips, drawing air into her lungs, and letting it out slowly through her nose. Her white shirt was already soaked with sweat, revealing a bit of her snug sports bra, while her black and red leggings showed the muscle in her thighs. She positioned her arms in front of her face; her muscles tensed, and the sweat trickled down quickly before evaporating. Her pupils flickered with a faint supernatural glow of light blue, and a slight vapor formed around her. Then she advanced again, faster this time: right punch, left punch, circular dodge. The punching bag moved more freely now; small sparks flew as her strikes hit it. ¨C I must improve... be stronger! She followed with a low kick and then quickly stepped back. Then she jumped, spinning in the air as flames emerged behind her right foot, propelling her with speed. If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. When it hit, the punching bag flew up, held only by the ceiling chains that directed it until it collided heavily with other bags stacked a few meters away. The glow in her pupils faded slowly, her eyelids lowered, and she looked again at the gloves that protected her hands. ¨C I won¡¯t disappoint you¡ father. She spoke in a sad tone, walking over to the bench. The space was a well-equipped gym with weight machines, free weights, yoga mats, and large mirrors. She approached one of the mirrors, observing her reflection for a moment, taking a deep breath, and forcing a smile that didn¡¯t last very long. ¨C Mom¡ how I wish you were here¡ The whisper left her lips, which trembled slightly, until she heard a notification sound coming from her backpack. She went over to it and pulled out a device resembling a smartphone, though it was sturdier. ¡®Ms. Crawford, could you come to our headquarters this morning? I have matters to discuss with you.¡¯ She read the message, raising both eyebrows, and then locked the device. ¨C Tyx...? Why does he want to meet with me? She murmured to herself, looking at the device in her hand, which now reflected her face on the screen. Then, she put it back in her backpack and left the gym with her belongings. As she entered the living room of her apartment, which was spacious with luxurious furniture and high-end appliances, decorated simply but elegantly, she heard the pleasant voice of a woman echoing from the speakers in the room''s corners. ¨C Mr. Conrad Crawford left a voice message for you. Would you like to hear it? ¨C Yes, Lumi, go ahead. ¨Csaid Karoline, grabbing a bottle of water and drinking from it. ¨C Karoline, I won¡¯t be able to come home this week either; however, I¡¯ve already arranged for an employee to restock the necessary supplies. The young woman slowly stopped drinking from the bottle, bowing her head as she looked at a picture of a large man and a beautiful red-haired woman in a large portrait; both were smiling and holding a baby. ¨C Don¡¯t forget to stay focused on your training and studies. See you. At the end of the message, the female voice spoke again: ¨CWould you like to reply to Mr. Conrad Crawford¡¯s message? ¨C No, Lumi. He¡¯s probably too busy to talk to me. ¨C Karoline replied with a sad smile, finishing her water and discarding the bottle in an empty trash bin. ¨C Lumi, I¡¯m going to take a hot shower. Put on some music for me. ¨C Would you like to hear the most-played songs again? ¨C Yes, anything to distract my mind. ¨Csaid Karoline, grabbing a towel from her backpack and heading away from the room. ¨C Would you like me to inform an employee that you¡¯d like breakfast? ¨C No, today I want to make it with my own hands. She said this while taking off her shirt and heading to the bathroom. At that moment, a fast and energetic song began to play, contrasting with the atmosphere, especially with the photo of the couple hanging in the center of the room. Ch. 2, Pt. 4: Behind the Flames Karoline wore a pink beanie, with her reddish hair down, completely covering her shoulders. Her eyes were hidden behind dark sunglasses, and a white cloth mask covered the lower part of her face. She wore a gray coat, a white shirt, a denim skirt, tights, and black boots. She was seated in a train car where holographic advertisements floated above, and LEDs pulsed in quick bursts of light. The space was crowded with a variety of people, predominantly young students in uniform and well-dressed adults. Many were grouped together in lively conversations, while a few remained isolated, absorbed in their own thoughts. Yet, something everyone had in common was the cell phone held in front of their faces. The young woman kept her legs together, using them as support for her hands as she worked on a smartphone; on the screen, there were mathematical equations, primarily focused on limits. ¨C Dude, have you got the money to pay me back yet? ¨C said a young man in uniform with glasses, his voice indifferent as he stared at his phone. ¨C I Wish¡ My part-time boss said the payment¡¯s gonna be delayed a bit. ¨C replied another young man beside him with messy hair, also in uniform and looking at his phone. ¨C Then sue him! If I¡¯d known you wouldn¡¯t pay it back, I wouldn¡¯t have lent it to you. ¨C If only I could¡ diverging incident, you know how it goes¡ The guy with glasses clicked his tongue, shaking his head slightly. ¨C Yeah¡ what a mess. Everything in our lives gets delayed because some powerful idiot decides to do something stupid. ¨C I heard last month or so, the Scarlet Flame took down a building? At the mention of the messy-haired guy¡¯s comment, Karoline instantly froze, keeping her eyes on her phone screen. ¨C I was the one who showed you the video, you goof¡ I¡¯m pretty sure if she weren¡¯t the Red Dragon¡¯s daughter, she¡¯d already be in a cell at the Acropolis. ¨C I doubt it¡ she¡¯s way too pretty to be locked up underground. The two started laughing softly until Karoline stood up and looked at them, making them step back in surprise. She seemed as if she was about to say something but only made a slight nod. ¨C Excuse me¡ They nodded back and cleared the way for her as she walked between them, moving through the crowded car toward the exit door, watching the city pass by at high speed outside the window. She looked down at her phone again and opened a messaging app. There were several conversations, but she selected one in particular, from a girl with white hair that hadn¡¯t been responded to in months. ¡®I hope you don¡¯t regret this choice, but I¡¯m sure you will.¡¯ She stared at the message for a moment before locking her phone screen. She took a deep breath, lifted her head to look once more at the city before her, which soon disappeared as the train entered a tunnel. Exiting the train, she found herself in a vast central metro station, where wide platforms, illuminated by LED panels, pulsed with the energy of a diverse crowd. Transparent glass escalators and automated ramps led to the upper floor, while floating holograms displayed real-time information on schedules and directions. The architecture was a fusion of ergonomic design and natural elements, with vertical gardens bringing life to the environment. The aroma of fresh coffee and exotic foods drifted from various kiosks. She walked through the crowd, head down as she made her way toward the escalators, adjusting her sunglasses and mask when she accidentally bumped into someone, knocking her glasses to the ground. ¨C Watch where you¡¯re going, damn it! ¨C exclaimed a man in a suit, sidestepping the spilled coffee on the floor. ¨C I¡¯m sorry, it was an accident¡ I can buy you a new one. ¨C Karoline said, bending down to retrieve her fallen item. If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it. The man looked at her with a puzzled expression, raising an eyebrow slightly. ¨C Wait a minute¡ I know you¡ ¨C I don¡¯t think so¡ you must be mistaken¡ ¨C Karoline replied, pulling a small plush wallet from her coat. She opened it and took out a five-dollar bill, offering it to the man as she put her sunglasses back on. ¨C No, I¡¯m sure¡ You¡¯re the Scarlet Flame, aren¡¯t you!? I recognized your voice; I¡¯ve heard you a lot on TV. My daughter is ten years old and adores you! The man quickly pulled out his phone, opened the gallery, and showed photos of his daughter dressed in an imitation hero costume in red and white. ¨C Oh, that¡¯s cute¡ But today, I¡¯m just Karoline¡ ¨C You have to take a picture with me! She¡¯ll love it! Please, Scarlet Flame! The man said as he activated his phone¡¯s camera and pointed it at himself, positioning himself next to the young woman. She slowly backed away until she bumped into another person walking by. ¨C Watch it! ¨C said a man dressed in casual clothes. ¨C I¡¯m sorry¡ Karoline was about to apologize when the man in the suit stepped forward, gently pushing aside the guy who had bumped into her. ¨C Watch it yourself, man! Do you know who you¡¯re talking to? She¡¯s the Scarlet Flame! Several people began to stop to see what was happening, and a large number pulled out their phones to record. ¨C So, you¡¯re the one who knocked down Santa Claudia? ¨C questioned someone in the crowd. ¨C Of course not! She was fighting Divergents; they¡¯re the ones who knocked it down! ¨C another person in the crowd exclaimed. Karoline looked around and realized a large commotion was forming. People started questioning her as she tried to move away. ¨C Scarlet Flame! Do a fire trick for us! ¨C What are you doing here!? Shouldn¡¯t you be on patrol? ¨C Scarlet Flame! I love you! ¨C Is this how you waste our tax money!? The crowd pressed in closer to her, to the point where she couldn¡¯t even make out what people were saying anymore. She felt light pushes, flashes of photos around her, and people attempting to hug her. She tried to distance herself, but they kept surrounding her until a piercing sound echoed, and a reddish light encircled everyone in the area. ¨C Everyone, step back! This is Division Zero! Move along! ¨C The robotic voice came from a drone hovering above everyone, followed by a grating sound. People quickly moved away from the red-marked perimeter, but when Karoline tried to cross it, another drone stopped directly in front of her. ¨C Not you. Please follow the blue-marked path. The drone projected a blue line on the floor, indicating a path around it, bordered by red light. A small siren began spinning on top of it as it started to move. Karoline simply followed; people continued taking photos and recording, but they didn¡¯t approach the drone, making way as it passed. The drone led her to the upper level of the metro station, guiding her toward an area marked with the Division Zero emblem and two agents at each corner. When they reached an automatic door, the drone turned off its lights, and the door opened. ¨C Please enter and proceed to the room on the right. Karoline simply nodded as the drone flew away. She entered the area, which had a reception with a counter and several chairs lined up against the walls. There was a woman seated at a computer; she merely glanced at Karoline and nodded toward the left, rolling her eyes as she said: ¨C Last room at the end of the hall. Karoline nodded and walked to the end of the white hallway, its walls had striped lines with red and yellow. Upon entering the room, Karoline found a man seated, typing on a computer. In front of him was an MDF desk, with two office chairs positioned across from it. He was an older man, with sparse hair, slightly overweight, and with wrinkles at the corners of his eyes. ¨C Please sit down and remove your mask and glasses. Karoline walked to the chair on the right and sat, following the man¡¯s instructions. ¨C You can call me Marcus. ¨C he said, placing both hands on the desk. ¨C Now then, can you explain why the daughter of a Defender is causing a commotion in the central station? ¨C It was just a misunderstanding. I¡¯m not acting as a hero, but¡ ¨C It¡¯s public knowledge that you have private transportation. So why are you here? ¨C Marcus questioned, crossing his arms. Karoline gave a faint smile, taking a deep breath, looking away, and twisting a strand of her hair around a finger. ¨C I¡¯m sorry, it¡¯s just that I needed to get to the Iovem building, and the car broke down. I was in a hurry, you know¡ Marcus looked at her with lowered eyelids before turning back to his computer. ¨C I should report this incident to the Convergence. Karoline swallowed, unable to raise her gaze, which remained fixed on her hands clasped tightly over her knees. ¨C But I¡¯ll let it slide, just this once¡ ¨C Marcus said with a serious tone. ¨C You should know that you can¡¯t just walk around among regular people; there¡¯s always the risk of something going wrong. ¨C It won¡¯t happen again¡ Marcus nodded slightly at her words, tapping his fingers twice on the desk. ¨C I¡¯ll arrange for an agent to escort you out of the station. From there, you can continue to the Iovem building. ¨C he said, typing again on his computer. ¨C And do me a favor, Scarlet Flame¡ ¨C Don¡¯t worry, I won¡¯t cause any more trouble¡ ¨C Karoline replied with a serious look. ¨C What¡? No, that¡¯s not it. ¨C Marcus said, picking up his phone, turning his chair, and looking at her from over his shoulder. ¨C Can I take a selfie with you...? You see, I¡¯m a big fan of your father, but I know he¡¯ll never stop by here¡ Marcus continued talking while Karoline watched him with half-closed eyelids. Then she sighed, forcing a smile as she made a peace sign with her fingers. ¨C Sure¡ go ahead... Ch. 2, Pt. 5: A Really Important Matter Through the gray mask, black visors emitted a steady red glow that constantly sparked. Tyx''s fingers carefully pressed the keys on the keyboard with precision, as if following an orchestrated melody. Tyx sat in a low, comfortable chair. In front of him was a computer on a light wood desk, minimalist in design. The floor was covered with soft tatami mats that absorbed the sound of footsteps. The room, located on the building''s upper floors, had large windows offering a panoramic view of the city. Natural light flowed in freely, softly illuminating the space and highlighting the neatly organized folders on the desk, each labeled in elegant handwriting. In the center of the room, there was a small area with cushions arranged around a low table. On the walls, two framed photos displayed an elderly man and woman. He bit his lower lip, shaking his head slightly as he watched the computer¡¯s lock screen, continuing to type characters. ¨C Almost there¡ His voice held a tone of satisfaction. He kept typing until the lock screen finally granted access to the system. A smile spread across his lips as the glow faded away. Tyx remained at the computer for a few more minutes, but when he heard the sound of the door authenticator, he quickly locked the computer, removed a USB device, put it in his pocket, and leaned back in his chair, resting his head in his hands as the door slowly opened. ¨C Shinji, what a surprise to see you¡ When the door opened, it revealed a beautiful blonde woman in business attire and glasses. She held folders against her chest and showed a look of surprise upon seeing Tyx seated. ¨C Tyx...? Oh, I mean, Mr. Defender Tyx!? ¨C the woman said, straightening up and lifting her chin. Tyx smiled, stood up, and walked over to the door, fully opening it and gesturing for her to enter. ¨C Just Tyx. Welcome! So, who are you? The new Shinji¡¯s assistant? The woman nodded as she entered the room and moved to the desk, organizing the folders she carried with the others on the desk. ¨C Yes, my name is Jennifer. I¡¯m the new assistant to Mr. Defender Visionary, ¨C the blonde woman said, lowering her head as she introduced herself. ¨C It¡¯s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Defe... I mean, Tyx. Tyx closed the door and moved to the center of the room, sitting on one of the cushions on the floor. ¨C So, Jeny, what do you think of Shinji? ¨C Mr. Defender Visionary is amazing! It¡¯s impressive how he keeps the entire system running and still assists all the other sectors! ¨C Jennifer said enthusiastically, adjusting her hair and blushing slightly. ¨C I¡¯ve never met anyone as intelligent and sophisticated as him¡ Tyx watched with interest as the woman glanced away, checking if the desk was properly organized. ¨C Do you know that, ever since I¡¯ve known him, he hasn¡¯t had a single romantic relationship? ¨C Tyx said with a smile, searching his pockets. ¨C You know what I think? You¡¯d be a perfect match. Jennifer averted her gaze again, picking up a folder and holding it in front of her face. ¨C Mr. Tyx! Mr. Defender Visionary would never look at me like that¡ Tyx was about to respond, but the door¡¯s authenticator beeped, and the door opened, revealing Visionary, who entered the room handling a tablet. I was just passing by your office when I saw this lovely lady enter and found out she¡¯s your new assistant. ¨C Tyx said, standing up and moving towards Jennifer. ¨C She was just talking about how much she admires your work, right? ¨C But Mr. Tyx, when I arrived, you were already¡ ¨C Jennifer began but was quickly interrupted by Tyx. ¨C Yes! I was already saying how much I admire Shinji, and you were saying you¡¯ve never met someone so intelligent and elegant, remember? ¨C Tyx replied with a smile, standing next to Jennifer. She cleared her throat, holding a folder in front of her chest and staring at the floor with a flustered smile while blushing. Visionary just observed them, sighed, and stepped away from the door, though he kept it open. ¨C Jennifer, could you give us a moment? You may start the routine system report. ¨C Yes, sir! Excuse me! ¨C the woman said as she walked out of the room; the door closed as she exited. ¨C What are you really doing here, Tyx? And don¡¯t give me that excuse about just passing by the corridor; I know you too well to fall for that. ¨C Visionary said, moving closer to his desk and surveying the room. ¨C You¡¯re right; actually, I came to discuss something important. ¨C Tyx replied, moving past Visionary and sitting on one of the cushions while pulling out a cigarette case. Visionary was about to look at his computer when he noticed Tyx¡¯s behavior and frowned. ¨C You know you can¡¯t smoke here. ¨C Would you sit down? ¨C Tyx said, pointing his cigarette at the cushion on the other side of the table. Visionary walked over to it but remained standing, looking down at Tyx. Tyx observed him, making a satisfied gesture. ¨C Then speak. ¨C Visionary said in a serious tone. ¨C Before I begin, doesn¡¯t it bother you that they decorated your office with Japanese architecture? ¨C Tyx remarked casually, grabbing a lighter. ¨C I found it a bit stereotypical; I mean, how do they know you¡¯re Japanese? I¡¯d talk to HR if I were you¡ ¨C I requested the d¨¦cor. ¨C Visionary replied, looking away and shaking his head. ¨C Oh¡ In that case, I get it. Helps the chi flow much better through the space, right? ¨C Tyx asked with a smile as he lit the cigarette. ¨C Especially when you¡¯re practicing Kung Fu¡ However, just as he was about to take a drag, a swift gust brushed close to his face. Visionary delivered a quick kick, hitting only the cigarette and sending it flying. ¨C If you¡¯re here just to mess around, you should leave¡ Unlike you, I have a lot of work to do. ¨C Visionary said, still holding his leg in the air after the strike. Tyx paused for a moment, glancing at the portrait of the elderly woman on the wall. ¨C Your mother called me¡¨C he said in a serious tone, turning his gaze back to Visionary. Visionary slowly lowered his leg and sat cross-legged on the cushion, looking at Tyx with a stern expression. ¨C Did something happen? Why didn¡¯t she call me directly? ¨C Visionary¡¯s voice, though calm, carried a hint of concern. ¨C It¡¯s a very important matter, and she was hesitant to speak to you directly¡¨C Tyx said, placing both hands on the table and looking down. ¨C What¡¯s with all the suspense? Just tell me! ¨C Visionary exclaimed, his eyes full of apprehension. Tyx remained silent for a moment, adjusting his hat and then looking directly at Visionary. ¨C Shinji¡¨C Tyx¡¯s voice came out melancholic, but soon a smile formed on his face. ¨C She wants to know when you¡¯re going to give her some grandkids¡ Visionary froze for a moment, staring at Tyx, who smiled and nodded slightly. ¨C Get out of here! ¨C he said through gritted teeth, his face beginning to redden with anger. ¨C Man, it¡¯s an important topic! We need to know who¡¯ll be joining your family. Hey, it could even be your assistant! ¨C Tyx said, rising slowly. ¨C Or a guy, right? Hey, I¡¯m all for it; it¡¯ll just be a surprise, especially for your mother! Visionary threw a spinning kick that nearly hit Tyx¡¯s face, but he dodged, falling to the ground in the process. ¨C What I do with my life is none of your business! ¨C Visionary said, striding quickly around the table toward Tyx. ¨C Now get out of here! ¨C Alright! Alright! I was just trying to help¡ ¨C Tyx replied, getting up and heading to the door. ¨C I have to go anyways; after all, I have some important business to handle at the Acropolis. ¨C At the Acropolis? What are you doing down there? ¨C Visionary asked, his expression curious. ¨C What I do with my life is none of your business¡ The hallway was quiet when a door opened, and Tyx stumbled out, as if he had been shoved. The door then closed again. ¨C And is that any way to treat someone with leg issues!? ¨C Tyx said to the door, stretching his arms to crack his back and then glancing at it. ¨C You¡¯re going to find a complaint against you in HR, Shinji! He turned his attention to the hallway, where the blonde woman was watching him with wide eyes and her mouth agape. Tyx approached her, giving her a light pat on the shoulder with a smile. ¨C Go for it, Jen! You can win his heart¡ The woman blushed, holding the folder up to her face as Tyx walked away, one hand on his back, heading toward the elevator. Ch. 2, Pt. 6: The Apprentice and the Master The elevator descended from the upper floors of the Iovem building, with the panoramic view of the city coming closer and closer. Tyx leaned against the wall, watching the sun and a vehicle floating in the distance across the blue sky. Before reaching the ground floor, darkness took over the space, now illuminated only by the artificial ceiling lights. The elevator paused briefly upon reaching floor zero, then continued descending, and the floor indicator began to display negative numbers. After reaching the tenth negative floor, the elevator slowed, and Tyx watched through the glass walls as the Acropolis unfolded into a vast, inverted city. The bottom of the area disappeared into deep darkness, while distant lights flickered like stars, revealing structures extending downward into the unknown. The buildings didn¡¯t just rise; they plunged into the earth¡¯s depths, each structure seeming to possess a life of its own. Platforms were scattered around, where workers performed maintenance on the enormous pillars supporting this underground section of the city. These columns were colossal and resilient, like pillars holding up the world. Luminescent tracks snaked through the space like pulsating veins, connecting different sectors and allowing a constant flow of people and goods. Fresh air surrounded him while distant sounds of conversations and machinery filled the vibrant atmosphere. Though the grandeur of the place always impressed him, there was a sense of familiarity; the Acropolis was both a refuge and the beating heart of New Atlantis. When the doors opened, he walked down empty metallic corridors with colored lines painted on the floor, each indicating a different destination. He followed the blue line, which led to other elevators in what was called the ECHO sector. He walked until he reached a platform with a metal and glass base surrounded by elevators, though none were present on this floor. He pressed the button for one of them. Sighing, he looked around and noticed that the area was deserted. He pulled out his cigarette pack but spotted a camera in the corner of the room. Clicking his tongue, he nodded at the camera, put the pack away, and pointed at a ¡®no smoking¡¯ sign, giving a thumbs-up afterward. The elevator arrived, and he stepped in, descending through the vast darkness toward the center of the ECHO sector. In the medium-sized room, white lights illuminated the ceiling, the floor was tiled to resemble wood, bookshelves lined each side of the room, and a large wooden table in the center held several folders scattered across it, along with an ashtray full of cigarette butts. An office chair sat on one side, with two armchairs on the other. Demian hummed and nodded slightly, his hands moving as if he were playing a guitar, following the heavy riffs playing in his headphones. A faint smile appeared on his face, as if the energy of the music coursed through his body. The door to the room opened, revealing Tyx, who entered, observing Demian. ¨C Good morning. ¨C Tyx said as he closed the door behind him, but Demian didn¡¯t notice his presence. So, Tyx moved closer and snapped his fingers right next to Demian''s face, startling him. Demian sat up straight in his chair and quickly removed his headphones, coughing to cover up what he¡¯d been doing. ¨C Hey¡ Tyx¡ Damn, did you change the mask design or something? ¨C Demian asked with a crooked smile. ¨C Knights of The Dark Realm? Ah, I miss those days. ¨C Tyx replied, reminiscing as he briefly listened to the music playing from Demian''s headphones. ¨C You like Metal? Ha! I always thought you¡¯d be more into K-pop. ¨C Demian commented with a cynical expression. Unauthorized use: this story is on Amazon without permission from the author. Report any sightings. Tyx let out a slight laugh, shaking his head as he sat down in the chair. Then he opened a drawer and pulled out some discs, placing them on the table. Demian''s jaw dropped; there were various DVDs from different Rock and Metal bands, some even autographed. ¨C There was a time in my life when I never missed one of these guys'' shows. ¨C Tyx said, leaning back in his chair as he lit a cigarette. ¨C Good times¡ and believe it or not, my hair was way longer than yours. ¨C No way! Knight of Tomorrow, Divine Death, Reliquary of a New Hell¡ you went to all these shows!? ¨C Demian said, passing the cases through his hands with excitement in his eyes. ¨C You have to lend them to me¡ Wait a sec¡ what the heck is this Gaiola das Gostosuras? Demian asked, wide-eyed and with a crooked grin, showing Tyx a DVD cover with several women dressed in provocative outfits striking suggestive poses. Tyx quickly straightened up and took the DVD from the young man''s hand, placing it back in the drawer. ¨C Well, that wasn¡¯t supposed to be there¡ ¨C Tyx said, removing the metal part of his mask that covered his face; now only the visor covered his eyes. ¨C Maybe one day I¡¯ll tell you about it¡ When you¡¯re older. Anyway, we have other matters to discuss. ¨C That¡¯s why I¡¯m here! What¡¯s our next mission? ¨C Demian asked with a confident smile and wide eyes. ¨C You¡¯re being assigned to a sidekick team. ¨C Tyx said after taking a drag from his cigarette. Demian¡¯s eyelids drooped, and his smile faded. ¨C Is this a joke? Where are the cameras? ¨C I¡¯m serious. Demian¡¯s shoulders slumped, and he looked down, staring at the floor with a displeased expression. ¨C Why? ¨C Demian asked with a frustrated tone. ¨C I know I didn¡¯t exactly follow your orders last time, but I promise it won¡¯t happen again¡ ¨C I told you that at some point, you¡¯d have to act the right way. Although I introduced you unconventionally, you still have to follow the rules like everyone else. Tyx responded to Demian¡¯s words as he took another drag of his cigarette and soon put it out in the ashtray. ¨C But if I kept helping you directly, I¡¯d certainly be more useful. I¡¯ll just end up slowing the other sidekicks down¡ Tyx continued putting out the cigarette in the ashtray, letting the smoke escape from his mouth while he stayed silent, listening to Demian¡¯s complaints. Eventually, Demian sighed and nodded his head. ¨C Fine¡ After all, I don¡¯t have a choice¡ ¨C Demian grumbled, moving towards the bookshelves, avoiding looking at Tyx. ¨C So, which team will I be joining? Tyx pulled out a laptop from one of the drawers and began typing something. ¨C The team you¡¯ll be part of is still being formed; it won¡¯t be immediate, but it¡¯s good for you to be aware in advance. ¨C So? Was that all you wanted to talk about? You didn¡¯t have to make me come all the way here; a message would¡¯ve been enough. ¨C Demian sat back down, his eyes lowered and unmotivated. ¨C After all, skipping school isn¡¯t exactly approved by my school administration¡ ¨C Then why have you been skipping since the start of the semester? Demian leaned back in the armchair, crossing his arms and gripping them with his fingertips as he stared at the floor. ¨C I¡ hate that place¡ ¨C Tyx paused for a moment, noticing the change in Demian¡¯s tone, as if his throat had briefly closed up. ¨C So, you¡¯re just going to give up? ¨C I¡¯m going to be a Convergent, aren¡¯t I? Why should I care about this? ¨C Demian replied with a forced smile, averting his gaze. ¨C That¡¯s not how it works, Demian. You have to deal with your responsibilities. ¨C Tyx replied, cutting Demian off. ¨C You chose this and knew the consequences. ¨C Yeah¡ I know¡ ¨C I¡¯ll keep my end of our deal and do my part. ¨C Tyx said, resting his face in both hands. ¨C Don¡¯t disappoint me, do yours. Demian looked down for a moment, taking a deep breath before looking at Tyx with a serious expression and nodding. ¨C I won¡¯t let you down. ¨C So, are we in agreement? ¨C Yes. ¨C Gotta be honest, I¡¯m surprised; I even had a long speech prepared in case you showed more resistance.¡± Tyx replied with a slight smirk, turning his attention back to the computer. ¨C I gave my word, so I¡¯ll keep it¡ And I have to trust your decision; after all, you¡¯re the best detective in the world. Demian stood up, grabbing his backpack from the floor and heading toward the exit. Such a statement made Tyx let out a light chuckle, shaking his head slightly. ¨C But remember, you need to keep our agreement. The young man stopped and looked back at Tyx, who had stopped using the computer and was looking directly at him with a firm expression. ¨C Don¡¯t worry; I¡¯ll keep my word. Tyx replied with confidence in his voice. ¨C Alright. Then I¡¯d better go; otherwise, I might get expelled, and my mom wouldn¡¯t be too happy about that¡ Demian said, pulling a face and tapping his hand lightly on his head before giving a small wave. Tyx nodded in return. ¨C See you, Demian. Ch. 2, Pt. 7: The Major Piece Karoline walked through the corridors, following a path composed of square, mostly metallic passages, with a high ceiling reflecting the soft light from LED panels along the sides. The upper part was polished steel, while the lower part was coated in durable plastic, with tiny slits at the corners allowing ventilation and keeping the environment cool. As she moved forward, she noticed screens on the walls displaying data about the ambient temperature and some daily news. Information about events on the surface and updates on Acropolis operations flashed in vibrant colors. She stopped momentarily to check one of the screens, sliding her finger across the interface to trace the path she should follow. She took her phone from her pocket and looked again at Tyx''s message, staring at it with a puzzled expression. Then, she continued down the corridor, putting her phone away. Tyx continued working on his laptop until he felt a vibration in his coat. He took out his phone and pressed an option on the screen to open the door. As it opened, Karoline stepped back in surprise before stepping in. ¨C Good morning, Defender Tyx. Did you want to speak with me...? ¨C Karoline asked, pinching her nose with two fingers. Noticing this, Tyx picked up a remote and activated a function that began ventilating the room, slowly clearing out the smoke. ¨C You don¡¯t have to call me Defender; you talk as if you don¡¯t know me. ¨C Tyx replied, stubbing out his cigarette in the ashtray. ¨C Please, have a seat. The young woman sat in one of the armchairs, looking around while Tyx organized his desk. ¨C I thought the smoke didn¡¯t bother you. ¨C It doesn¡¯t, really. ¨C Karoline replied, waving the smoke from her face with one hand. ¨C It¡¯s the smell of the cigarette I don¡¯t like. ¨C It¡¯s impressive how changes occur with ¡°high-scale¡± stigmata. Tyx used a lavender-scented spray in the room, and Karoline maintained a smile, lowering her fingers from her nose as the smoke dissipated. ¨C Well, Miss Crawford, apologies for the mess; I don¡¯t usually have visitors. ¨C Tyx said, stashing the ashtray in one of his desk drawers. ¨C No worries! It¡¯s actually a bit interesting to see this side of you. ¨C Karoline replied, making a light, calming gesture with her hand and smiling with her eyes closed. ¨C I imagine the past few weeks must have been tough on you, no? Hearing Tyx¡¯s words, Karoline¡¯s smile faded, and she pressed her lips together, taking a deep breath; then she opened her eyes again and responded:¨C I made a foolish decision; it was my fault for being so impulsive. From now on, I¡¯ll control my emotions and be stronger... The young woman delivered her speech, hands clasped on her knees and her head lowered. Tyx observed her for a moment, massaging his goatee with his fingers. If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it''s taken without permission from the author. Report it. ¨C Words from your father? Karoline remained silent, looking down at her intertwined fingers as her lips curved slightly downward. ¨C Yes... Tyx sighed, nodding slightly and leaning back in his chair. ¨C I know your father doesn¡¯t mince words, but he doesn¡¯t lie either; it¡¯s important for you to understand that our actions always have twice the impact, whether for good or for bad. ¨C Tyx said with a more serious tone. ¨C I understand. I¡¯m sorry. ¨C However, I didn¡¯t call you here to lecture you, Miss Crawford. In fact, it¡¯s almost the opposite... ¨C What do you mean? ¨C I want you to resume your role as a Convergent. One of the girl''s eyebrows lifted, and her eyes seemed puzzled. ¨C But my license was temporarily revoked; I can¡¯t act as a hero... You know that, right? Karoline replied, crossing her arms, while Tyx simply gave a crooked smile. ¨C Indeed, you¡¯re right; however, I need you to lead a team of assistants. And as you may know... Tyx paused, extending his hand toward Karoline, waiting for her to finish his sentence. ¨C Only a hero can lead a team of assistants...? ¨C she asked with confusion on her face. ¨C I understand, but how will I act if my license is revoked? ¨C Don¡¯t worry; I¡¯ve already spoken with Visionary about this very important matter. And believe it or not, I managed to convince him to reinstate you to the Convergents as soon as possible. Karoline displayed a huge, beautiful smile, standing up and shaking Tyx¡¯s right hand with both of hers, shaking it energetically. ¨C Really!? Thank you so much, Mr. Tyx! I won¡¯t let you down! Tyx gave two light pats on her hands, and she let go. He adjusted his hat, which had shifted during the excitement. ¨C Easy girl! I want you to know that I believe strongly in your potential. ¨C Tyx said with a light smile on his face. ¨C But remember: for now, you¡¯re only permitted to use your abilities in training here at the Acropolis. ¨C I thought you¡¯d reinstated my license... ¨C Indeed, I did, but you must understand that this is a bureaucratic process and will take time. So, it¡¯s important that you¡¯re not seen using your abilities in public; for now, just train in our facilities. Karoline looked at Tyx with a suspicious gaze, then forced a slight smile as she looked at her hands opening and closing. ¨C Tyx, may I be completely honest with you? Tyx remained silent, nodding in agreement. ¨C You know, ever since my powers awakened, my father didn¡¯t talk to me much. It was just training, more and more training... ¨C she said calmly, her gaze shifting away with a hint of melancholy. ¨C But I used to ask him about the other Defenders. Sometimes he¡¯d tell me about Titan''s strength and endurance, Visionary''s intelligence and reasoning, and Amazon¡¯s resilience and abilities, especially when she stopped a massive tornado... Tyx stayed silent, listening to Karoline, who now turned her gaze back to him. ¨C But he only mentioned you once... He told me about the day you saved Visionary¡¯s life and lost part of both your legs because of it. ¨C Karoline gripped her knees. ¨C I honestly thought it was incredible, but my father said you didn¡¯t do it because it was right, but because it was part of your mission... At that moment, Tyx lowered his head slightly, hiding his face under his hat. ¨C He never liked you much, and he told me not to fully trust your words, because you don¡¯t act for others, but rather for some goal. ¨C Karoline said, looking seriously at Tyx. ¨C I¡¯d like you to be as clear with me as I¡¯ve been with you, Tyx. What is your goal? Otherwise, I¡¯ll report this conversation to him. Tyx remained perfectly still for a moment, observing Karoline¡¯s green eyes fixed firmly on him. Then he smiled, sitting up straight in his chair, pulling his ashtray from the drawer, and placing it on the table again. ¨C I suppose there¡¯s no other way to proceed with you than on your own terms, is there? Tyx¡¯s austere tone echoed through the room as he lit a cigarette, leaning forward and resting one elbow on the other arm. Karoline stared at him, clenching her fists with Tyx¡¯s figure in front of her, and then she denied with her head. ¨C Alright... I want you to be my Queen. Ch. 2, Pt. 8: Pawn ¨C Huh? Karoline reacted, stepping back with her face slightly flushed, crossing her arms to cover herself. Her discomfort and confusion were evident: her brows slightly furrowed, her eyes narrowed, and her mouth slightly open. ¨C No... No! It''s not what you''re thinking! ¨C Tyx replied with a nervous smile, waving both hands toward the young woman. ¨C What do you think I am, girl? ¨C I don¡¯t know, you¡¯re making indecent proposals! ¨C Karoline responded; her suspicious gaze still fixed on him. Tyx shook his head lightly, placing a hand over his face. ¨C When I said ''Queen,'' I meant the chess piece... It was just an analogy. Karoline¡¯s eyes widened fully, and she quickly placed both hands over her face. ¨C Oh... I see... ¨C I watched you grow up and have known your father for years. How could you think I¡¯d do something like that? ¨C Tyx questioned, holding both hands open in exasperation. ¨C I... I don¡¯t know! ¨C The young woman looked away; her cheeks reddened as she ran a hand through her hair. ¨C You¡¯re the one who said it in a weird way! ¨C I said it normally! ¨C Tyx retorted, crossing his arms. ¨C Maybe you just talk weird... Ah, whatever! It was a misunderstanding; let¡¯s forget it! ¨C Karoline replied, sighing and patting her cheeks lightly as she regained her composure. ¨C I talk weird...? Anyway, let¡¯s move on. ¨C Tyx adjusted himself in his chair. ¨C You¡¯re practically family to me; I¡¯d never do such a thing. For a moment, a faint, genuine smile appeared on Karoline¡¯s face, but she quickly lowered her head, taking a deep breath and regaining a serious expression. ¨C So, what do you mean by being your Queen? Tyx cleared his throat, crossing both hands on the table as he looked at the young woman. ¨C It means you¡¯ll play a crucial role in upcoming events. ¨C But why did you mention chess pieces? ¨C Karoline asked, her brows slightly furrowed. ¨C To you, is this all just a game? Tyx let out a soft chuckle, tilting his head slightly as he pulled out an intricate key from his coat. The object was made of silvery metal with unique geometric patterns. He inserted the key into a drawer; it turned on its own, and then opened with a soft click. ¨C Don¡¯t get me wrong, I¡¯m just another piece on this board as well, ¨C Tyx said, opening the drawer and pulling out some black folders. ¨C but the other side made their move first, and we must craft our strategy if we want to secure victory. ¨C Victory against who? ¨C That¡¯s the million-dollar question. Karoline watched the folders Tyx was handling with a curious look. He smiled and handed one to her, which she took cautiously with both hands. ¨C What is this? ¨C See for yourself. Karoline opened the folder and found the Zero Division logo alongside a confidentiality stamp. ¨C This is from Zero Division¡¯s? How did you get this? ¨C she asked, her eyes wide as she stared at Tyx. ¨C That¡¯s not important. Focus on the content. The young woman hesitated for a moment before diving into the folder''s contents. Inside, she found various data related to the incident at Santa Cl¨¢udia Hospital. ¨C So, it¡¯s Zero Division handling the case of the Divergents in Freedom Valley... ¨C When we fail, they take over. ¨C Damn... This is all my fault... ¨C Karoline said, shaking her head slightly. ¨C If I had followed protocol... ¨C There¡¯s no use crying over spilled milk. You need to focus on the future now, and that¡¯s in the folder in front of you. Karoline continued reading the document, which contained only a few pages. Meanwhile, Tyx was reading a thicker file with more attached pages. After a few minutes, Karoline closed her folder and stared at Tyx. ¨C I don¡¯t understand. All the information about the Divergents is stuff we already know. ¨C she said, placing the folder on the table. ¨C What were you trying to show me? That Zero Division is just as lost as we are? ¨C Actually, you missed the key details. ¨C Tyx replied, lighting the last cigarette from his pack and clicking his tongue as he realized it. ¨C The Divergents aren¡¯t what matter in this case. ¨C What do you mean? ¨C the young woman asked, crossing her arms and leaning back in her chair. ¨C Jonathan Williams.. ¨C Tyx said, taking a drag from his cigarette and blowing the smoke to his right. ¨C He¡¯s the centerpiece of this investigation. Karoline¡¯s eyes widened briefly as she stared at the floor for a moment. ¨C He was with the Divergents... ¨C she said, gripping her knees with her hands. ¨C We need to interrogate him! He must know something! ¨C Unfortunately, that¡¯s impossible. ¨C If he¡¯s in Zero Division¡¯s custody, we can file a request to... ¨C He passed away. Karoline fell silent instantly, lowering her head with a distant look in her eyes. ¨C But I saved him... I remember... ¨C she whispered to herself, clenching her fists tightly. ¨C You did everything you could, but it seems he was poisoned. That piece of information was omitted even from Zero Division¡¯s protocol documents. ¨C Tyx said, lightly twirling the cigarette between his fingers. ¨C The true medical report states he died from blood loss and trauma. ¨C Why hasn¡¯t this been made public? ¨C the young woman asked, her lips trembling and her brows slightly furrowed. ¨C Because it¡¯s now part of a confidential Zero Division investigation. ¨C Tyx replied, tapping the ash into the ashtray. ¨C But there are people who don¡¯t fully trust Zero Division, and that¡¯s why I have this information. Karoline stared blankly, moistening her lips as she tightened her fists. ¨C You have a whistleblower in Zero Division, don¡¯t you...? ¨C Karoline¡¯s words came out in disbelief. Tyx didn¡¯t respond, only taking a slow drag from his cigarette. ¨C Then why hasn¡¯t this gone to the Defenders!? Why are we even having this conversation!? ¨C Karoline exclaimed, standing abruptly with clenched fists. Tyx paused, taking a deep breath and letting the cigarette rest between his fingers. ¨C Could you sit down? Karoline didn¡¯t reply, only glaring at Tyx with fiery eyes. He then stood up as well, pulling a coin from his pocket, tossing it into the air, and catching it before approaching the bookshelf. ¨C Tell me, Karoline: why do you think Zero Division hasn¡¯t publicized the death of a prestigious Omni Tech Enterprise employee? ¨C Because they might be involved? ¨C Karoline followed him with her eyes. Tyx clicked his tongue repeatedly, shaking his head as he tossed the coin high again. Then he turned, leaning his back against the wooden partition of the shelf. Through the visor, a red glow flickered in his eyes. Extending his index finger, he balanced the coin upright on its tip.You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author. ¨C What proof do you have? ¨C Tyx asked slowly, raising his finger as the coin began to roll gently toward the center of his palm. ¨C You just showed me all those documents! We have more than enough proof! ¨C Karoline retorted, pointing to the documents on the table. ¨C I see, but do you know the source of this information, or whether it was obtained illegally? ¨C Tyx formed an arc with his thumb and index finger as the coin¡¯s momentum slowed, inching toward the point where it would fall. ¨C And have you considered the consequences? How Zero Division would react? Or the possibility that this might be exactly what our opponent wants?" Karoline swallowed hard, averting her gaze with furrowed brows, slightly baring her clenched teeth. ¨C Remember, always think ahead; every action has a consequence. Believe me, if this were the best course of action, I would have taken it. ¨C Tyx said, as the glow in his eyes gradually faded and the coin began to wobble. ¨C However, we¡¯re up against an opponent who¡¯s been playing for a long time. This isn¡¯t an ordinary game; it¡¯s 4D chess. ¨C What do you mean? ¨C I mean I don¡¯t know what our opponent¡¯s strategy is anymore; it doesn¡¯t seem to make sense. ¨C Tyx replied. The glow disappeared entirely, and the coin fell, but Tyx caught it, closing his hand around it. Karoline sat back in the chair, sighing as she placed both hands on her forehead, massaging it. ¨C And Williams¡¯ family? Were they at least informed about his death? ¨C Karoline¡¯s voice sounded exhausted, her eyes remaining closed. ¨C According to Zero Division, Kate, his wife, was murdered. Karoline¡¯s eyes shot open, and she quickly turned her head to look at Tyx, who had lowered his gaze. ¨C My God... ¨C Karoline¡¯s sorrowful voice was accompanied by her hands covering her face. ¨C Their daughter, Katherine, said an ¡°invisible ghost with red eyes¡± locked her in a closet and told her not to come out. ¨C An ALPHA stigma... ¨C Karoline said almost involuntarily, covering her mouth with one hand. ¨C It was the same one that attacked me! Do you think they went after Williams¡¯ family!? Tyx stared at Karoline as he took a drag from his cigarette, nodding slightly. ¨C If they attacked Williams¡¯ family, then they already knew him... ¨C Yes, it seems like some form of retaliation. ¨C Tyx said as he picked up his phone and played an audio recording. ¡®Honey, leave your sister¡¯s house with Katherine and take that money. Go to your parents¡¯ house and wait for me there... I love you... I love you both...¡¯ Karoline listened to the weary voice of Williams from the phone until the audio ended. She shifted her attention back to Tyx with a serious expression. ¨C So, Williams was planning to run away... He must have been involved with the Divergents... Tyx nodded in agreement with Karoline¡¯s words, moving closer to the table and sitting on its edge. He opened the folder he had been skimming earlier and flipped to a specific page showing various data about the Omni Tech Enterprise. ¨C The OTE... ¨C Karoline said, staring at the folder on the table. ¨C Williams primarily dealt with international relations, transportation, and exports. ¨C Tyx replied, pointing to the page in the folder on the table. ¨C However, there¡¯s a loose end even Zero Division isn¡¯t aware of: another employee named Kevin Bright has gone missing. Karoline focused on his words, leaning forward in her chair, crossing her legs and arms, resting her face on one hand. ¨C This isn¡¯t just a case about Divergents, is it? You think something bigger is involved... Tyx smiled, closing the folder on the table. ¨C That¡¯s what all the evidence points to... He pulled another folder from a common drawer and handed it to the young woman, who took it and opened it. ¨C What¡¯s this? ¨C Karoline asked as she examined the file inside the folder. ¨C It¡¯s one of the future members of your team. Karoline looked through the papers, which contained information about a young man: photos, descriptions of physical attributes, power scale, and various other details. ¨C Black? ¨C she asked, alternating her gaze between Tyx and the folder. ¨C He doesn¡¯t remember his real name, so he calls himself that. ¨C Tyx replied, pointing to the file. ¨C How do you think he¡¯s connected to this case? ¨C Black was found in northern Africa, in a Libyan city where the ¡°conflict,¡± which is actually a war, is taking place. ¨C Tyx said, taking another drag of his cigarette, the ashes on the verge of falling. ¨C I still don¡¯t get it. How does this connect to everything else? ¨C Karoline asked, quickly flipping through the file before closing it and looking toward Tyx. ¨C Here, take a look at this. Tyx handed her another folder. Inside was a file with various images of receipts and shipments of technological products and controlled substances to Africa, many of which had gone missing. ¨C These leaked data are from 2020. It seems that many OTE goods were ¡®lost¡¯ in Africa, yet the government accounts in those regions continued receiving money. ¨C Tyx explained, gesturing as he spoke and keeping his eyes on Karoline. ¨C Do you think OTE set up new routes or improved security? No. The shipments continued as usual until 2025. After that, something changed." ¨C So Williams is part of the new smuggling operations? Tyx nodded at her question and then pointed to a specific section of the document Karoline was holding. ¨C Williams held an important position in the company. OTE is part of a conglomerate directly tied to biotechnology, nanotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and more. ¨C Smuggling to whom exactly? How has no one ever been caught? ¨C Karoline continued reading the file as she asked her questions. ¨C That¡¯s the big question: the data we obtained from leaks can only be accessed with a lot of expertise and is buried deep within the internet. ¨C Tyx replied, lightly bouncing his left leg. ¨C It seems OTE does everything it can to sweep any dirt under the rug." ¨C Do you believe whoever is doing this has a very large group? ¨C Karoline asked, briefly glancing at Tyx with sharp eyes. ¨C This scheme has existed for decades, long enough for them to start conducting experiments on humans. They must have a vast and solid web of connections and numerous collaborators. ¨C Tyx answered, nodding slowly as Karoline shook her head slightly, showing disbelief. ¨C Experiments on humans? What do you mean? Wasn¡¯t that banned worldwide after the Second War? ¨C Karoline pressed her lips together and furrowed her brows as she questioned, looking toward Tyx. ¨C I think these people don¡¯t care much about what¡¯s right or wrong. They just pursue their goal, whatever it may be. The young woman fell silent for a moment, placing the file on Tyx¡¯s desk after hearing his response. ¨C Couldn¡¯t we inform Jupiter about this? ¨C Unfortunately, he wouldn¡¯t be able to do anything. Just as you¡¯re a symbol of heroism for this city as Scarlet Flame, Jupiter is a symbol for the world as humanity¡¯s protector. ¨C Tyx said, moving back to his chair and sitting down, leaning into it. ¨C Helpers make mistakes, heroes can make mistakes, defenders are judged when they make mistakes, but humanity¡¯s protector... He doesn¡¯t make mistakes. Karoline stared at Tyx silently, absorbing every word he said. Then, she intertwined her fingers and rested them on her thighs. ¨C So I¡¯ll be the Queen because you want someone who can make mistakes...? ¨C No, Karoline. I want you because I trust your potential, and after everything you¡¯ve heard, you understand how important this is, ¨C Tyx replied, interrupting her and leaning forward in his chair. ¨C You¡¯re not just powerful; you¡¯re trustworthy and, above all, you have your heart in the right place. If we manage to stop what¡¯s happening, you won¡¯t just save lives; you¡¯ll also show your father that you¡¯re capable of being more than he imagines. Karoline lowered her head, staring at her hands as they slowly opened. Then, her green eyes locked on Tyx, and her fists clenched tightly. ¨C All right, I¡¯ll be your Queen. Tyx smiled, nodding as he took another drag from his half-smoked cigarette. Then Karoline spoke again. ¨C But I have one condition. ¨C And when don¡¯t you have one? ¨C he asked, resting his cigarette in the ashtray. ¨C Alright, tell me, what do you want? The young woman stood up again, looking at Tyx from below. ¨C I know you¡¯re using illegal means to get this information. I¡¯m not entirely sure how, ¨C Karoline said, placing her open hand over her chest before clenching it into a fist, her expression serious and determined. ¨C but I want you to promise that we won¡¯t act solely based on the ends. Our means matter too... Tyx remained motionless for a moment but finally nodded. ¨C Alright, I promise to consider the means, not just the ends. ¨C Tyx lifted his gaze, but Karoline maintained her serious demeanor, though with a crooked smile. He shrugged. ¨C What? ¨C You think I¡¯ll take just your word for it? Here! ¨C she said, placing one hand on the table and offering her pinky with the other. ¨C You can¡¯t be serious... She didn¡¯t respond, simply wiggling her pinky and flashing a sharp-eyed smile. Tyx sighed, scratching the side of his head lightly before finally giving in and linking his pinky with hers to seal the promise. ¨C Seeee? That wasn¡¯t so hard, was it? ¨C Karoline exclaimed, placing her hands on her hips and leaning slightly forward. ¨C Just... don¡¯t mention I did this to anyone... especially not Shinji... ¨C Tyx replied, hiding his face slightly with his hat. ¨C Oh, one more question: usually a support team has three members. Who¡¯s the other one? ¨C Karoline asked, raising her hand slightly as if to signal her curiosity. ¨C He¡¯s a bit cocky but has a good heart. Most importantly, remember this conversation is confidential. You can¡¯t tell anyone about what we discussed here, not even your father. ¨C I understand; you don¡¯t need to worry. ¨C Good! You¡¯ll likely begin your operations in three months, so get ready. Karoline grabbed her bag and headed for the door. However, before reaching it, she turned back to Tyx. ¨C One last question before I go: you said you¡¯re also a piece in this game, didn¡¯t you? So, what are you? ¨C I¡¯m just a simple minor piece advancing at the start of the game, clearing the way for our strategy to work. ¨C Tyx replied succinctly. ¨C You¡¯re a Defender. How can you compare yourself to a pawn? ¨C Hey, don¡¯t underestimate a pawn; it¡¯s the only piece in the game that, upon reaching the end of the board, can become a Queen. Karoline smiled, but as she noticed Tyx reaching for the cigarette in the ashtray, a light blue shimmer flickered in her pupils, and the cigarette instantly turned to ash. Tyx froze, slowly turning his head toward her. ¨C You should know that¡¯s bad for your health. Being an Enhanced one doesn¡¯t make you immune to things like cancer. ¨C the young woman said with a slight smile as the shimmer in her pupils faded. She winked with her left eye before stepping through the door. ¨C And besides, you shouldn¡¯t smoke in the presence of a queen. Bye-bye. The door closed, leaving Tyx alone in the room. He grabbed his pack of cigarettes and realized there wasn¡¯t a single unused one left. ¨C This is why I never had kids... ¨C he grumbled, leaning back in his chair and staring at the white ceiling light. He pulled out a coin from his pocket again: a commemorative coin from the 2012 Nova Atlantis Olympics. Holding it up against the ceiling light, he reflected, ¨C I guess I haven¡¯t been much of a man of my word these past few years... Straightening in his chair, he glanced at the ashtray in front of him, tossed the coin into the air, and caught it in his hand. ¨C You two would get along way too well... ¨C he whispered, slipping the coin back into his coat pocket. Then, he removed the ashtray from the table and stored it in the drawer, picking up the cigarette pack and crushing it in his fist. ¨C I guess it¡¯s time to start keeping my word... Ch. 3, Pt. 1: Adapting to the light Massive dark trees surrounded him as he ran, panting heavily, unable to form a clear image of his surroundings. The forest floor was covered with weeds and branches, enclosing him entirely. He stopped for a moment, catching his breath as he glanced back. Two figures were following him, and behind them, he could hear whistles, shouts, and the sound of footsteps accompanied by powerful beams of light cutting through the darkness. As the beams swept across, they revealed patches of blood. ¨C Come on! We¡¯re almost there! ¨C Black¡¯s exhausted voice escaped his lips as he extended his hand toward the figure closest to him. The figure reached out and grabbed his hand, and he pulled them closer. The buzzing in his ears persisted, but he maintained full control of his body. Out of the darkness, the figure drew nearer. Their facial features and most of their body remained obscured by the dim light. However, he could make out curly hair, dark skin, full lips, and parts of a bare feminine form. The figure held his right hand tenderly, intertwining their fingers with his, and slowly lifted his hand toward her face. His breathing steadied as if, in that moment, nothing else existed around them. She guided his hand until it touched her face, allowing him to feel her soft skin as his fingers were gently led across it. He relaxed. The figure continued guiding his hand, brushing it past her lips and slowly downward. ¨C We¡¯ll make it... And then we¡¯ll be together forever... ¨C the figure said in a soft voice. He swallowed hard; her touch stirred him. He felt the ridges of her scars, especially as she guided his hand over her collarbone and down to the center of her chest. He calmed as he felt her heartbeat, slow and steady; in that moment, they were connected. But the buzzing pulled him away from the moment, and he noticed the lights growing closer. ¨C We need to go! ¨C he urged, trying to pull her along, but she didn¡¯t budge, gripping his arm with both hands and keeping his hand pressed against her chest, where he felt her heartbeat quicken. ¨C Promise me you won¡¯t forget me? That you won¡¯t stop until we¡¯re free? ¨C the woman asked in a sweet tone. ¨C I promise! ¨C he responded almost instantly. The lights reached them, and the world around him began to bleed. His vision grew blurry; the buzzing became deafening, and he could see less and less of the figure in front of him until the light fully engulfed her image. For a fleeting moment, he caught a glimpse of the orange glimmer in her eyes and the sorrowful smile on her face. Then the light consumed him, and his yellow eyes snapped open abruptly. Gasping for air, his trembling hands clutched at the bed. He looked around, only to see what he had grown used to day after day: his metal bed with a thin but comfortable mattress, a white sheet, the metallic ceiling with its lights turned off, and a clock at the center of the metal wall, marking 5:50 a.m. He rose slowly, placing a hand over his sweaty face. Air filled his lungs rapidly as he stared at his own trembling hand. "What was that...?" His hand opened and closed. He shut his eyes in an attempt to focus on his dream, but it felt as though a needle was pricking his brain. The sensation made him grit his teeth tightly as he instinctively placed his hands over his eyes. "Was it her...?" The melodic alarm rang, causing the lights in the room to flicker on instantly, revealing other empty beds identical to his. He slowly sat on the bed, lowering his head before glancing at a black oval object in the corner of the room. "I can¡¯t forget I¡¯m being watched. I need to stay calm." He took a deep breath and stood up, heading for the room¡¯s exit: a door at the far-right end of the space. Upon stepping out, he found himself in a metallic hallway illuminated by LED strips along the sides, cooled by air flowing through vents, carrying a faint scent of pine. He looked both ways and noticed another oval object in the corner of the corridor. Black closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and reopened them before continuing toward the showers. Once there, he removed his clothes: a completely white shirt, loose white pants, and comfortable footwear. The showers were divided into individual stalls, and there was a large single mirror above a counter with several sinks. He grabbed one of the white towels stacked in an iron basket beside the sink and headed into one of the stalls. "It was the first time I remembered something significant." Hot water streamed down his face and hair as his eyes remained closed. He opened and closed his hand, running a finger slowly along the wall. "Who is she?" His eyes opened, and he looked at his hand, feeling the water run down his entire body. "Hers is the voice I hear in my dreams... But why?" He lightly bumped his forehead against the wall a few times, his lips curved downward, and his brows slightly furrowed. "I need to find out, but I won''t get anywhere if I just stay here... But I can¡¯t do anything reckless; otherwise, they¡¯ll hand me over to Division Zero again..." ¨C I guess I¡¯m screwed either way... ¨C he muttered to himself with a sad smile. His fists clenched so tightly that his hands began to tremble, and the veins in his skin bulged. However, he soon sighed and turned off the shower, grabbing the towel hanging from a hook. Black dried himself off and turned his gaze toward the large mirror outside the shower stalls. He observed the distorted reflection of his own image, obscured by the hot steam from the shower. Only a dark figure with yellow eyes stood out. Yet even that quickly disappeared. Without delay, he dressed in a clean set of clothes from a neatly stacked pile.If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. "Why did I believe the illusion that I would stop being a prisoner here?" He stared at the pile of identical uniforms. His stomach growled, and he scratched the back of his head before leaving the bathroom, heading into the corridor and following the green line that indicated the way to the cafeteria. When he arrived, he found himself in a massive cafeteria filled with screens that simulated dim sunlight. Soft ambient music played in the background. The floor was made of a material resembling white tiles, with vents along the sides for air circulation. There were numerous metal tables with attached benches. Black grabbed a large tray and some utensils and was quickly served by staff members dressed in aprons and masks. Some merely looked at him while others greeted him. He passed each one silently, taking a large amount of food, nodding slightly in acknowledgment, and murmuring a brief thank you. He then sat down on one of the benches by the tables, picking up one of the many plastic spoons he had brought with him. However, he snapped it easily, prompting a click of his tongue as he sighed and grabbed another one more carefully. "Stupid plastic spoon! Why don¡¯t they give us something sturdier?" He watched the staff as some whispered among themselves, occasionally glancing in his direction. Above them, screens displayed the meals served, listing their calorie content, along with a calendar outlining the daily menu. Before starting to eat, he clasped his hands together and briefly closed his eyes. ¨C Ngiyabonga ngokudla. He began eating quickly. On his tray were eggs, fries, bacon, pancakes, cereal, fruits, and milk. ¡°I need to find a way to discover who the woman in my dreams is..." He paused for a moment, gazing at the empty cafeteria, only to notice the oval objects in the corners of the room. His lips tightened as his eyes fell back to his food. Then he resumed eating, stuffing as much as he could into his mouth. "But I can¡¯t raise suspicion. I have to follow their orders and act the way they want." While he ate, the cafeteria doors opened, revealing a woman. Her skin was fair, her face slender, with blue eyes and short blonde hair, strands falling across her face. She wore a tight white blouse, jeans, and black sneakers. Her eyes scanned the room, and when they landed on Black, she stood on her tiptoes, raised her arm, and waved at him with a cheerful smile. After greeting the servers, she made her way toward the young man. "Emma? What''s she doing here?" Black stared at her in surprise, wiping his hands with the napkins from the tray''s compartment. ¨C Guten Morgen, Black! Did you sleep well? The woman asked as she stood behind him, lightly tapping both his shoulders with a smile on her slightly red-painted lips. The young man nodded as she moved around and sat across from him at the table. ¨C G¨²tem... Mornen...? What¡¯s that? Russian? ¨C Black questioned, narrowing his eyes slightly at the woman sitting in front of him. She looked at him, and her lips pouted in dissatisfaction. ¨C It¡¯s German... You should know the nationality of your favorite instructor! ¨C she replied, turning her face away, closing her eyes, and pointing her pout to the side while crossing her arms with an upright posture. ¨C At this rate, I might have to fail you... "I wonder what she wants... I''ve never seen her here before." Black didn¡¯t respond, merely raised an eyebrow. She slowly opened one eye, and upon noticing his reaction, sighed, adjusting the hair in front of her face. ¨C Why doesn¡¯t this work on you? ¨C she complained, resting her face in her hands with a bored expression. It didn¡¯t last long when she noticed his tray of food. ¨C Whoa! Can you eat all that? She said while grabbing a fry from his meal and biting half of it. Her face involuntarily tensed, and she shook her head slightly, placing the remaining piece back on his plate. ¨C How can you eat this? She asked as she swallowed, her face scrunched up and her lips curved downward. "In a way, it¡¯s good that she¡¯s here; her laid-back demeanor might help me act normal." ¨C I need a lot of energy for my daily routine ¨C Black replied, picking up the fry she left on his plate and eating it. ¨C I thought all enhanced people ate a lot. ¨C Oh, no way! We¡¯d be a national crisis if that were true! ¨C she replied in a comedic tone. ¨C The reality is, it varies a lot from person to person, but most just need slightly more energy than the average adult. "Is she just here to chat? Fine; maybe if I talk to her, I can learn something." ¨C What about you? How much do you eat? ¨C Hm? Why the interest? Are you thinking of inviting me on a date? ¨C she teased with a playful smile, gesturing with one hand. ¨C Too bad for you, I don¡¯t date my students. "What¡¯s wrong with her?" ¨C You know I¡¯m practically a prisoner, right? ¨C Black replied with a sigh, clenching his fists slightly. ¨C I can¡¯t even leave wherever this place is... The woman¡¯s lips tightened slightly, and her posture shrank as her gaze lowered. ¨C I know this must be hard for you... "Damn... I can¡¯t take this out on her... The last thing I need is them suspecting me, and like it or not, she¡¯s always treated me well. But right now, I need information." Black took a deep breath, a faint smile forming at the corner of his mouth. ¨C Actually, I was thinking about something I remember from class: there¡¯s a way to identify enhanced individuals using a scale, right? The woman¡¯s expression shifted to a soft smile. ¨C Yes, it¡¯s called the Power Variation Index. ¨C How is the identification made? By the colors that shine in the pupils? ¨C Yes. Alpha is red, Beta is orange, Gamma is yellow, Delta is light yellow, Epsilon is white, and Zeta is light blue ¨C she replied, resting her face on one hand. "In my dream, I saw the glow in that woman¡¯s eyes; so she was a Beta-level enhanced..." Black remained thoughtful until the woman in front of him gave him a curious look. ¨C Something happened? ¨C Oh... It¡¯s just that I remember seeing this in some lesson, but I didn¡¯t quite get it ¨C Black admitted, scratching the back of his head slightly with a forced smile. The woman smiled as she puffed out her chest with her hands on her hips. ¨C Then let your instructor explain: in short, when an enhanced individual uses their abilities, a glow of a specific color is emitted from their pupils. A man named Khalarran decided to create a chart to classify the enhanced ¨C she explained while grabbing another fry, gesturing with it before biting into it again. ¨C Urgh... And that¡¯s how the Power Variation Index, or PVI if you prefer, was created. ¨C But... There are seven levels on the scale, and you only mentioned six. Suddenly, the woman took on a more serious demeanor, lightly tapping her fingers on the table. ¨C Sometimes I forget you¡¯re not from here... ¨C she said in a serious tone, slightly averting her gaze. ¨C The last level on the scale was discovered a few years ago, in 2010. It¡¯s called Omega, and its color is blue... "I¡¯ve never heard her talk like this; why did she change?" Black placed both hands on the table, staring at the woman, who returned his gaze with a faint, forced smile. ¨C Did I say something wrong? ¨C It¡¯s nothing... It¡¯s just a scar that still hurts... "So even her, always smiling and joking, has problems in her past... I can¡¯t stay in the dark; I need to figure out what happened in mine. But I can¡¯t do that here." ¨C Emma, do you know when I¡¯ll be able to leave here? I mean, by acting like a Convergent. ¨C Black asked with a serious look. ¨C It¡¯s Instructor Emma! ¨C the woman replied, pointing a finger with one hand, puffing her cheeks, and making an exaggerated pout. ¨C And yes, actually, that¡¯s why I came here... ¨C Really!? ¨C Black asked, anxious; the plastic utensil broke in his hand again. Emma laughed as Black grabbed another utensil, slightly embarrassed. ¨C Tyx wants to meet with you today. Black showed surprise for a moment, but soon a faint smile appeared at the corner of his mouth. "It¡¯s been months; finally... This time will be different. I¡¯ll find a way to leave, even if I have to act like an obedient dog..." Ch. 3, Pt. 2: Umbra He had only eaten half of the food on his tray. He looked at Emma with slightly furrowed brows; determination filled his gaze. ¨C I¡¯ll go right away! Where should I meet him? ¨C Easy there, tiger. You still have time before the meeting ¨C Emma replied, gesturing with her hand. ¨C Tyx hasn¡¯t even arrived at Iovem yet. Black nodded slightly, sitting back down, his head lowered. "She¡¯s right, I need to calm down, and I¡¯ll have to come up with a plan." He raised his gaze, staring at the oval object at the top of the cafeteria. A constant red light pulsed rhythmically. "First, I¡¯ll have to act like a Convergent; after all, they¡¯re certainly watching me closely. Then, when I get the chance..." ¨C Are you okay? ¨C Emma asked, looking directly into Black¡¯s eyes. The smile and body language from before had shifted; her tone no longer carried its previous lightness. ¨C Ah, yes, of course... ¨C Black replied, diverting his eyes from the camera to look at Emma. ¨C You¡¯re different. Usually, you¡¯re so serious, but today, you even smiled. ¨C Emma¡¯s words carried a tone unlike her usual demeanor; she seemed emotionless. ¨C It¡¯s strange because I haven¡¯t seen you smile in months, not even a forced smile like today¡¯s... "Why would Emma be keeping an eye on me? I knew I was being watched, but not by the ''cool instructor.'' I must¡¯ve let my guard down." Black carefully picked up the plastic utensils, trying to cut a piece of egg. His hands trembled as he attempted to avoid breaking them. "I¡¯ll have to improvise." ¨C I¡¯m usually alone in the cafeteria, so it¡¯s nice to have company... ¨C Black said, staring at his food and trying to force a smile. ¨C Hmm... Emma kept looking at him; her expression was no longer a mystery. Unlike before, her face was now completely blank. "She knows I¡¯m lying; she¡¯s been observing me closely this whole time." Black stayed still for a moment, then looked Emma directly in the eyes, abandoning the attempt to smile and gripping the utensils firmly. "I guess I have no other choice. Maybe I can confuse her the same way I feel confused." ¨C Have you ever felt lost, Emma? ¨C Why do you ask? ¨C Emma replied, resting her face on her hand and tilting her head slightly, her gaze sharp. ¨C Do you know what it feels like to be a raging animal? To feel like everything around you is a containment cage? ¨C Black¡¯s voice grew more serious as he stared at the utensils, which were slowly showing signs of damage from the pressure of his fingers. ¨C Do you know what it feels like to be a threat to everyone? ¨C I do. "Huh?" Black instantly looked at Emma, who now bore a sad smile, her head slightly lowered. ¨C You know, Black, the world once made me believe I was a monster. ¨C Her face slowly slid off the hand supporting it, revealing a nostalgic smile. ¨C But here, I met people who showed me I was more than what the world thought of me. Emma reached out and grabbed the broken plastic utensil Black had snapped earlier. It was split in half, with only a thin layer of plastic holding it together. Then, a faint supernatural yellow glow appeared in her pupils. A dark form emerged from the shadow beneath the utensil, seeming to leap onto it, wrapping around like cotton threads until it completely covered it, transforming it into a sleek, black utensil. ¨C I¡¯m not your enemy, ¨C she said, offering the black utensil to Black as the glow faded from her eyes. ¨C I just want to do for you what someone once did for me. "Can I really trust her?" Black let go of the utensil he was holding and slowly reached for the black one, hesitating at first. But when he looked at Emma, her eyelids slightly drooping and her genuine smile in place, he decided to take it. "I don¡¯t know, but honestly, I¡¯m tired of always being alone." He noticed the utensil was now sturdy; it didn¡¯t break under his grip. He then looked down slightly. ¨C I just remembered something... Emma straightened her posture, though her expression remained unchanged. ¨C Did you remember something about who captured you? Black shook his head slightly, placing the black utensil on the tray and staring at his right hand, opening and closing it. ¨C No, I remembered someone who I think was with me before. ¨C Someone you know? ¨C Emma asked, leaning slightly forward and studying Black¡¯s expression. ¨C Yes. I¡¯m not sure who she is, but I feel like she changed my life... ¨C Black¡¯s voice sounded frustrated as he ran his hands over his forehead, pressing against his eyes. Emma continued to observe him, her gaze lowering as she caressed her own hand while listening to his words. ¨C I don¡¯t know why I can¡¯t remember... ¨C he said, removing his hands from his eyes and looking at Emma again, his gaze now resolute, his fists slightly clenched. ¨C But I have to find her! I promised... I promised I¡¯d never forget her! Emma looked at her own hands, running her left thumb across the center of her right palm. Then, she clenched her fists as well, took a deep breath, and looked at Black. You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author. ¨C It¡¯ll be okay. We can help you find her when you¡¯re ready. Black slowly furrowed his brows, wrinkling his nose and gritting his teeth. ¨C What do you mean!? There¡¯s nothing wrong with me! ¨C Black responded, slamming both fists on the table. ¨C She needs my help! I have to find her! He felt a faint ringing in his ears, glanced around, and saw some attendants retreating at his outburst; they all quickly left the cafeteria. Emma, however, seemed only to empathize with his situation. "Why am I so powerless!?" Black¡¯s breathing grew faster; his fists began to bend the table slightly, and the ringing intensified. "Why couldn¡¯t I save her!?" ¨C Black! He snapped back to reality at Emma¡¯s raised voice, her worried gaze fixed on him. Realizing what he had done to the table, he slowly withdrew his trembling hand as the ringing subsided. ¨C I have to help her... ¨C he said, his voice weary, his head lowered. ¨C And how do you plan to do that!? You can barely control your own emotions and lose control so easily! You need to understand you can¡¯t make reckless decisions! ¨C For the first time, Emma raised her voice, standing as she leaned her hands on the table. ¨C You want to help her!? Then first, help yourself! Black also stood, leaning his fists on the table and locking eyes with Emma. ¨C And what do you think I¡¯ve been trying to do!? ¨C he shouted, throwing the food tray against the wall, creating a loud crash. He then turned his back to Emma, staring at the floor and shaking his head. ¨C I¡¯m trying... but I don¡¯t even know where to start... Silence enveloped the room; they both stood still. Black remained motionless, his fists trembling, his breathing rapid. Emma looked at him, sighed, then sat back down, picking up a napkin that had fallen from the tray and wiping the spilled milk on the table. ¨C You know, Black? I used to know a girl... ¨C she said with a faint smile, crumpling the napkin in one hand and placing it on the table. ¨C At first, I hated her; after all, she was the complete opposite of me: elegant, remarkable, sociable, and a good person. And I was just a resentful girl who couldn¡¯t see past the wounds that refused to heal. Black slowly turned his head but kept his back to her. Emma looked at the screens on the ceiling that simulated sunlight, her gaze distant. ¨C I had only just left my teenage years, but I had already been under the care of the Convergents for a few years. My supervisor could never fit me into a team of helpers because, even though I wanted to help, I was angry... ¨C A faint smile tugged at the corner of her mouth as she gently pressed her thumb into her hand. ¨C I always ate in this cafeteria because it was never crowded; I was always running away from everything. Then, one day, she happened to come here. I think she was escaping the social media reporters who were always after her. Hehe... She then clasped one hand over the other, smiling as she stared at the gesture. Black sat down again, facing away from Emma, his head low, elbows resting on his thighs. ¨C I still remember what she said to me that day: ¡°Before you try to do something for others, you must recognize you need to do something for yourself.¡± ¨C Emma said, opening a broad smile and shaking her head slightly. ¨C At that moment, I hated her even more, thinking she saw herself as superior. But later, I realized she only wanted to help me, and in the end, she was the one who always stayed by my side. Black slowly looked over his shoulder at Emma, turning slowly until he sat sideways on the bench. Emma could only see half of his face. ¨C You know what it¡¯s like to have someone important, ¨C he said, still looking down and staring at the screens on the ceiling. ¨C that¡¯s why I can¡¯t just sit still!¡± ¨C I understand how you feel. When we meet someone capable of changing our lives, we want to do everything for them. ¨C Emma replied, closing her eyes and intertwining her fingers. ¨C And what happened to her? That girl, I mean. ¨C Black asked, fully turning his face toward Emma. ¨C She was murdered¡¨C Emma¡¯s interlaced fingers tightened as she spoke, and a slight tremor in her lips became evident. ¡°Damn it, so Emma isn¡¯t just the cheerful instructor. She¡¯s lost someone too.¡± Black diverted his gaze from Emma as he noticed, for the first time, her furrowed brows as she tried to maintain a smile overshadowed by discontent. ¨C I¡¯m sorry. ¨C So am I. ¨C she answered, taking a deep breath and sighing as she looked away. ¨C But in the end, I share some of the blame; if I had thought before acting, maybe she¡¯d still be alive. Black turned his gaze back to Emma, now fully facing her. ¨C What do you mean? ¨C he asked, his eyebrows slightly raised. ¨C It doesn¡¯t matter anymore, ¨C she said with a forced smile, meeting Black¡¯s eyes again. ¨C I just don¡¯t want you to make the same mistake I did. Believe me, I want to help you. ¡°I really can¡¯t do much... I¡¯m in a place I don¡¯t know, in a situation I can¡¯t control.¡± Black lowering his gaze again to the napkins dirtied with the food he had spilled, observing the milk splattered on the floor after throwing the tray. ¡°And if I act foolishly, I might drag others into this mess.¡± ¨C So, what do I do? Emma paused for a moment, biting her lower lip with a dissatisfied expression. ¨C Follow Tyx for now; he knows what he¡¯s doing. ¨C she replied tersely, briefly closing her eyes. ¨C You don¡¯t sound very confident about that. ¨C Black said, crossing his arms and furrowing his brow. Emma stood up, pointing toward the exit with one hand. Black looked at her but soon stood as well, facing her. ¨C You¡¯ll find that a lot of people have something against Tyx. ¨C she replied, walking behind him and gently pushing him toward the door. ¨C But even I admit he¡¯s good at his job. Black gave a slight nod as she guided him to the door. Along the way, he glanced at the oval object and noticed that the constant red glow had disappeared. He squinted slightly. ¨C So that¡¯s it? ¨C Black asked, raising an eyebrow and arching his lips slightly. ¨C For now, yes. Go to your quarters; I asked for some more casual clothes to be delivered for you. Put them on and wait for me there! Emma said, pushing Black out without giving him a chance to reply. She closed the door behind him, leaning her back against it and resting her head on its surface. ¨C What a mess I¡¯ve gotten myself into... ¨C she murmured, pulling a slim device resembling a smartphone from her pocket. ¨C You¡¯d want this, wouldn¡¯t you, Evelyn? She gazed distantly at a specific table in the farthest corner of the room. Then, she dialed a number, crossing one arm to support her elbow and holding the phone to her ear. ¡®Umbra, any progress?¡¯ The voice on the other end sounded clearly displeased. Emma closed her eyes and slightly shook her head. ¨C I couldn¡¯t find out anything; he still doesn¡¯t seem to remember anything and appears willing to follow Tyx. ¨C Emma replied, making a gesture and opening her hand. The supernatural glow returned to her pupils, and from the shadow of her hand, the black utensil appeared, which she twirled between her fingers. ¡®I heard he got agitated; the servants left the room, and when they checked the cameras, they had ¡°mysteriously¡± stopped working.¡¯ ¨C We just had a friendly chat. He got worked up at one point, but you know how young people are; always throwing things to create dramatic effects. ¨C she said, glancing at the oval object on the ceiling. ¨C As for the cameras, it¡¯s always good to request preventative maintenance on these things. ¡®You¡¯re starting to sound like that idiot Tyx. Emma, this kid is involved in something big, something that doesn¡¯t just concern his life but possibly hundreds or thousands of others. You can¡¯t seriously think Tyx is capable of handling this.¡¯ ¨C And why do you think that? He¡¯s a Defender too, isn¡¯t he? ¡®You, of all people, should know... Tyx is like a fox: cunning enough to hunt a rat, but not to deal with a wolf.¡¯ ¨C I understand, Conrad, so we need a dragon to deal with the wolf? ¨C she asked sarcastically. ''What I mean is that Tyx won¡¯t make the right decisions. For starters, that kid should never have become a Convergent; it¡¯s a mistake, and you know it! He should be under our care, but in a controlled manner!'' Emma closed her eyes, gripping the utensil in her hand tightly and curling her lips. ¨C Evelyn wouldn¡¯t want us to imprison someone... "Damn it, Emma! Evelyn died precisely because we made that cursed mistake of trusting and giving freedom to someone we didn¡¯t know! And here you are, about to make the same mistake again! How many more people have to die before¡" Hearing this, she hung up the phone, letting the utensil and the device fall to the floor. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath, sliding down the door until she was sitting on the floor. Then, tears began to stream down her face. She wrapped her arms around her knees, crying silently. The utensil lay on the floor, surrounded by those black tendrils that were now slowly unraveling, revealing the broken structure of the object. Ch. 3, Pt. 3: Water, Oil and Heat Black, now dressed in a black and yellow shirt, jeans, and boots, stared at his reflection in the elevator glass. At that moment, it showed nothing but the darkness of the transition from the underground to the surface. "I won''t deny it''s nice to wear real clothes again..." He held a white badge with blue stripes hanging around his neck, where the words ¡®Level Two Access¡¯ were written. "Finally, I¡¯m going to meet Tyx. I need to prove to him that I¡¯m ready to act as a Convergent." His fingers let the badge drop against his chest as he sighed, running a hand through his hair. "In the end, Emma was right: I need to get better before trying to help the woman of my dreams." He looked again at the glass, which now faintly reflected his image. Then, the darkness was suddenly replaced by sunlight. Ahead of him, he could see the blue sky scattered with clouds, towering skyscrapers, and streets crowded with people. Black stepped closer to the glass, placing a hand against it, gazing at New Atlantis with determination. "I¡¯ll make it!" The elevator doors opened, and Black stepped into a hallway similar to one he had seen before: the floor and walls were white, with brown details along the lower edges, exuding a lavender scent. "Hard to believe it¡¯s been over three months since I last walked through this place. At least this time, no one¡¯s pointing a gun at my head." He took a deep breath, stepped out of the elevator, and looked around. There were rooms and framed pictures lining the walls, along with an intersection leading left and right. ¨C Emma said it¡¯s the last room at the end of the hall to the left... ¨C he muttered, glancing again at the badge before moving forward. He walked along, curiously observing the pictures as he passed. There were many, but most seemed to depict New Atlantis landmarks. Black admired the artwork until one particular picture caught his eye: a photo of a sunrise over a harbor. It made him pause briefly, but he soon resumed his path to the left. When he turned the corner, he immediately noticed someone standing in front of the gray door at the end of the hall, above which was inscribed "Defender Tyx." "Is that Tyx? No, he¡¯s too small and skinny to be him." Black continued walking, slowly approaching the figure, who appeared to be a lanky, pale young man. His messy black hair was long, and he wore a black hoodie, ripped jeans, and black-and-white sneakers. ¨C Why do I have to do this? ¨C the hoarse voice of Demian sounded frustrated as he lightly knocked his fist against his own head. ¨C This is pointless! Why did he put me on this stupid team...?" Black could barely make out the words and approached further, noticing that the thin young man had his eyes closed, lightly shaking his head in denial. "Is he talking to himself?" Black stood nearby, one eyebrow slightly raised, crossing his arms as he watched the young man freeze in place. ¨C Hey, excuse me! Is this Tyx¡¯s office? ¨C he asked, looking toward the door ahead of the lanky figure. Demian didn¡¯t respond immediately. He seemed to tremble slightly as he awkwardly tried to turn his head to glance behind him without fully showing his face. He quickly gave up, placing a hand over his right ear and forcing a laugh. ¨C Ha! So that¡¯s it! I¡¯ll need to hang up now... ¨C Demian said with exaggerated gestures. ¨C Yeah, you know how it is: I can¡¯t keep talking on my wireless earpiece... Because... yeah. Bye! He kept his forced laugh going for another moment, still facing the door. "Weird..." Black cleared his throat to get attention, placing a closed fist over his mouth. ¨C Ah, sorry! I didn¡¯t... ¨C Demian turned around, his eyes widening as he noticed Black''s size, lifting his face to meet his gaze. His surprise didn¡¯t last long; he took a step back, frowning slightly. ¨C Is this Tyx¡¯s office? ¨C Black asked as he uncrossed his arms and nodded toward the door. ¨C Can¡¯t you read? ¨C the lanky young man replied with a crooked smile, gesturing with his head to the inscription above. "I¡¯m not going to kill this brat... I¡¯m not going to kill this brat..." ¨C So...? ¨C Black said again, clearing his throat and gesturing to the side with his head, implying the young man should move away from the door. ¨C Got a problem with your throat or neck? ¨C Demian asked sarcastically, staring at Black. Another vein pulsed on Black¡¯s forehead as his brows furrowed. ¨C Dude! Are you going to go through the damn door or not? ¨C Nah, you know how it is, my hobby is staring at doors. ¨C the young man replied with a shrug and another crooked smile. ¨C Then get out of the damn way! ¨C Black exclaimed, grabbing Demian by the collar and lifting him until he was on his tiptoes. Demian¡¯s smirk vanished, replaced by a serious expression, but Black could tell he was trembling slightly. ¨C You better let me go... ¨C Demian said in a weak tone, looking directly into Black¡¯s eyes. "What am I doing? He might be a pain in the ass, but he doesn¡¯t deserve a beating for this..." Black closed his eyes and sighed, releasing his grip. The young man quickly stepped back, placing a hand near his neck. At that moment, the door opened, revealing Tyx, who wasn¡¯t wearing the lower part of his mask. He observed the two, his gaze shifting between them. ¨C What are you two doing? ¨C Tyx asked, crossing his arms in front of the door. Black and Demian exchanged a glance, neither looking particularly friendly. "Damn it! If Tyx finds out what almost happened... I need to come up with an excuse." ¨C Uh... Well... ¨C Black began, but Demian sighed, looking at Tyx with tired eyes.If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. ¨C Nothing much... I was just explaining to him that this was your office since it seemed like he was looking for you. ¨C Demian answered nonchalantly. "Why didn¡¯t he say anything? Doesn¡¯t matter, he just gave me the excuse I needed." ¨C Yeah, that¡¯s it, ¨C Black added, forcing a smile. ¨C Emma said you wanted to talk to me. Tyx stepped aside from the door, making room for both of them. ¨C Indeed. Come in and take a seat. Demian went in first, glancing subtly at Black with slightly droopy eyelids. "So he¡¯s here to see Tyx too? He doesn¡¯t seem like an enhanced one." Black followed last, taking in the room as a whole. It was spacious but empty, with a large rug that mostly covered the white tiles. In the center was a PVC desk with a computer on top, a comfortable office chair, and four armchairs in front. Behind the desk, a large window was concealed by blinds. As they entered, a red-haired girl with green eyes and fair skin, who had been sitting in one of the armchairs, stood and turned toward them. She was dressed in an off-shoulder pink blouse with a black top underneath, blue jeans, and white-and-pink sneakers. Her hair was styled in two braids with curled tips, and a few straight strands fell over her face. ¨C Hello, Black and Demian, right? It¡¯s a pleasure to meet you! ¨C she said with a bright smile. ¨C My name is Karoline, but you might recognize me as Scarlet Flame. ¡°Scarlet Flame? I¡¯ve heard that name somewhere before...¡± Black studied her for a moment before nodding in agreement. ¨C It¡¯s a pleasure to meet you. ¨C Y-yeah... pleasure... ¨C Demian said, averting his gaze before looking at her with droopy eyelids. ¨C Wait a second... Did you just call him Black? Isn¡¯t that wrong? ¨C It¡¯s what he prefers to be called. ¨C Tyx said, clapping his hands behind them as he made his way to the chair behind the desk. ¨C Well, now that introductions are out of the way, I need you all to take a seat. We have to discuss your futures. He sat down in his chair, facing the three from across the desk. Karoline took her seat again, and Black sat next to her in the last chair on the left. She gave him a gentle smile, and he responded with a slight nod. Meanwhile, Demian chose the last chair on the right, far from the others, practically slouching in it. Karoline glanced at the chair next to her, then at Demian, before returning her attention to Tyx. ¨C Alright! We¡¯re here today to formalize the creation of the Investigative and Tactical team. ¨C Tyx announced, pulling out three folders filled with documents. ¨C Also known as I.T. ¨C I.T? I thought we¡¯d be Convergents, not fixing computers. ¨C Demian said, chuckling to himself and glancing at Black and Karoline afterward. Neither showed any reaction; they simply blinked at him. ¨C Sorry, ¨C Demian muttered, then grumbled under his breath. ¨C Looks like no one here has a sense of humor... ¨C As I was saying... Unlike other teams that receive direct orders from superiors, you¡¯ll have more autonomy in investigations and operations. ¨C Tyx continued, reviewing the papers in the folders. ¨C The hero in charge will coordinate the team and make decisions, so remember to follow your leader¡¯s orders. ¨C So that¡¯s what you wanted to talk about? This so-called team? ¨C Black asked, leaning forward in his chair. ¨C Yes. You¡¯ll be part of it. The first step to becoming a Convergent is joining a helper team. ¨C Tyx replied, signing some sections of the documents with a pen and stamping them afterward. ¨C And where¡¯s our hero guide? ¨C Demian asked, raising his hand. Tyx pointed the pen he was using toward Karoline. Demian glanced to his left until he spotted the young woman, who smiled and nodded at him. However, he kept looking further into the room before turning his attention back to Tyx. ¨C Is he invisible or something? Ohh! You¡¯ll be the one in charge of us! ¨C Demian said, snapping his fingers and pointing at Tyx. ¨C Got it! Makes sense! Your pen was pointing at you. Wow, we¡¯re getting a Guardian... ¨C No. Miss Crawford will be the hero responsible for the team. ¨C Tyx replied as he finished signing the papers and turned his attention back to the group. Black quickly glanced at Karoline, surprised. ¨C You¡¯re already a hero? ¨C Yes! I became one about a year ago. It was a tough journey, but I learned a lot along the way. ¨C Karoline answered with a friendly smile. "So this girl is already at the same rank as Emma. I can only imagine what she¡¯s capable of." ¨C Impressive. ¨C Black replied succinctly. ¨C Thank you! But it¡¯s nothing special; I mean, eventually, all Sidekicks become Heroes. Demian watched them from the corner of his eye, wrinkling his nose and curling his lips slightly before smirking. ¨C Certainly, nepotism helps some more than others... He rested his head on his left hand, avoiding looking at them and cutting off their conversation. ¨C You think I haven¡¯t heard that before? ¨C Karoline asked, staring at Demian, who continued to avert his gaze. ¨C Sorry, just thinking out loud... ¨C he said, looking at the floor with a fake smile. ¡°So, she¡¯s the daughter of someone important? That doesn¡¯t justify being a jerk to her.¡± Black glanced at the two, and just as he was about to step into the conversation, Karoline raised a hand to him with a smile and turned her attention back to Demian: ¨C I sincerely hope I can prove to you that I got where I am on my own merit, not because of my father. Tyx watched the scene unfold with interest, paying close attention to how Karoline handled the situation. Demian remained silent after hearing her, simply nodding slightly while continuing to stare at the floor. ¨C Alright! I need you all to read and sign these documents. They outline your areas of operation as well as various other details about your duties and responsibilities. ¨C Tyx handed each of them a folder as he explained, offering a pen as well. Each person took their respective folder. ¡°Terms of responsibility...¡± Black began reading through the documents in his folder, which included a small photo of him attached, flipping the pages slowly. Demian was the first to hand his folder back, signing it quickly and crossing his arms after placing it on the desk. ¡°No way he read all of that! I can¡¯t understand most of these terms either, but I think I got the gist: do as they say, or you could face legal trouble.¡± Black prepared to sign at the bottom of the document where the signature field was marked, but he hesitated for a moment, looking at Tyx, who was still waiting for everyone¡¯s signatures. ¨C How should I sign this? ¨C Just write ¡®Black¡¯. ¨C Tyx replied. Black then signed slowly and placed the folder on the desk. Karoline signed next, also leaving her folder there. ¨C Well! Now that you¡¯ve signed the agreement, I¡¯ll inform you of your assignments. Remember, from now on, you¡¯re a team and must act like one. ¨C Tyx said as he stood, clapping his hands and looking at the three. ¨C From now on, nothing is training. Being a Convergent is a great responsibility, so I expect nothing less than your best. ¡°Is it really that simple? Just sign a paper, and we¡¯re Convergents?¡± Black stared at Tyx with a confused expression, raising an eyebrow and pressing his lips together. ¨C Demian, you¡¯ll be the team specialist. Your role is to secure advantages for the group, whether in combat or other situations. ¨C Tyx said, looking at the young man, who simply blinked back at him. ¨C Black, you¡¯re the first versatile member of the team. Your resilience and strength make you the team¡¯s fighter and tank. Your job is to protect your team and any innocent bystanders. ¨C Tyx continued, now turning to Black. ¡°Versatile, fighter, and tank? What the hell is that supposed to mean?¡± Black nodded hesitantly. ¨C Alright... ¨C Karoline, you¡¯ll be the team leader. Like a versatile member, you¡¯ll act as a caster and fighter. Your job is to plan strategies, engage in combat, and provide support. The young woman nodded after Tyx finished speaking, showing a determined expression. ¨C Understood! ¨C Very well! Now I need you all to head to the training area in the Acropolis and discuss a strategy for the test. ¨C Tyx said with a slight smile as he sat down again. ¨C Test? ¨C Demian asked with a worried smile. ¨C Like, a written test? ¨C If I told you what it was, it wouldn¡¯t be a surprise. ¨C Tyx replied, leaning back in his chair. ¡°A test? Well, the faster this goes, the better...¡± Black stood up, nodding. ¨C Whatever it is, I¡¯ll overcome it ¨C he said, looking at Tyx. ¨C That¡¯s the spirit. ¨C Tyx replied while checking his jacket pocket, but he suddenly stopped and clicked his tongue. ¨C Let¡¯s head to the testing area then. ¨C Karoline said, glancing at Black, who nodded back with a smile. The young woman stood up and headed toward the door. Black followed shortly after, while Demian just watched the two leave the room. Then, he turned to Tyx with a look of discontent. ¨C Seriously? You put me on a team with those two? ¨C he said, pointing toward the door with slightly furrowed brows. ¨C What¡¯s wrong with them? ¨C Tyx asked, rummaging through the drawers, barely paying attention to the young man. ¨C Now, where did I leave...? ¨C Nothing! And that¡¯s the problem! ¨C Demian said, curling his lips and glaring at Tyx. ¨C You know I don¡¯t get along with people like Mr. Chad and Miss Perfection. ¨C Pretty prejudiced of you, don¡¯t you think? ¨C Tyx replied, finally giving up on searching the drawers with a sigh. ¨C For someone who complains about being judged by appearances, you sure act like quite the judge yourself. ¨C We¡¯re all prejudiced; the difference is, mine are well-founded. ¨C Demian said, looking away. ¨C When you get to know them better, you might realize you¡¯re not so different from them after all. ¨C Tyx remarked, interlocking his fingers on the desk. Demian let out a faint, dismissive laugh, staring at Tyx with a clear expression of anger. At that moment, the door opened slightly, and Karoline poked her head in, saying: ¨C Demian, aren¡¯t you coming? The young man closed his eyes, stood up, and then glanced at Tyx with indifference. ¨C Who would¡¯ve thought you¡¯re a comedian too... ¨C he muttered as he headed for the door. Karoline stepped aside, and he walked past her without making eye contact. She gave Tyx a small wave goodbye before closing the door behind her. Now alone, Tyx let out a long sigh as he leaned back in his chair. ¨C Young people... Ch. 3, Pt. 4: Old Bonds Tyx was seated, reviewing the documents that were signed earlier, when he heard two knocks on the door. Initially, he ignored them, but the knocking grew more insistent. With a sigh, he got up and went to the door, opening it. Visionary stood there, holding a laptop and wearing a less-than-pleasant expression. ¨C Shinji-kun! Who would¡¯ve thought you¡¯d come to visit me on such a good day... ¨C Tyx said, giving Visionary a light punch on the chest. Visionary simply huffed, pushing the door open as he entered the room. He walked straight to the desk, set the laptop down, and pulled up a seat. ¨C Here we go again... ¨C Tyx muttered, scratching the back of his head as he made his way to his own seat. ¨C What is it this time? No sushi at the cafeteria? ¨C You tell me. ¨C Visionary replied, turning the laptop toward Tyx. ¨C Does this look familiar? The screen displayed data related to the status update of the Convergent hero Scarlet Flame and the registration of a new recruit. Tyx stared at the screen, nodding slightly as he rubbed his chin with his left hand. Then, he looked at Visionary, pouting exaggeratedly while shaking his head. Visionary closed his eyes, taking a deep breath as he leaned back in the chair, resting his head against it. ¨C I knew you did something the day you came to my office. ¨C he said, standing up and crossing his arms, now facing away from Tyx. ¨C What did you do to use my credentials? Did you use your powers? Clone my certificate? ¨C Actually, I did both, but it was a real hassle... ¨C Tyx replied, twirling a USB drive in his hand before setting it on the desk. ¨C But it¡¯s nothing major; you¡¯d have done it yourself if I¡¯d asked. I just saved you the trouble." ¨C You just violated our security protocols, and you¡¯re joking about it... ¨C Visionary said, sitting back down and picking up the USB drive, which he promptly snapped in half with both hands. ¨C Actually, I¡¯m helping you make everything more secure. I can¡¯t wait to see what the next challenge will be. ¨C Tyx said, cracking his neck casually. ¨C No, Tyx! Enough of this! ¨C Visionary¡¯s voice deepened, his brows slightly furrowed. ¨C I¡¯m not going to keep covering for all the crap you pull! It¡¯s one mistake after another that I have to clean up because of your reckless behavior! ¨C What¡¯s that supposed to mean? ¨C Tyx asked with a faint smirk. ¨C Come on, let¡¯s forget this. How about a pizza and game night with the bros? ¨C Shut up! ¨C Visionary snapped, closing his eyes before letting out a long sigh. ¨C I guess part of this is my fault. I¡¯ve been too soft on you all these years...Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit. Tyx stayed silent for a moment, watching Visionary, who opened his eyes but avoided looking at him. ¨C I¡¯ve always treated you differently from the others, covering for the messes you made, but not anymore! ¨C Visionary said, clenching his fists tightly. ¨C From now on, we¡¯re just coworkers, nothing more! A heavy silence hung in the air as Tyx stared at Visionary, who stood, still avoiding his gaze. ¨C Wow... I¡¯m really sorry, Shinji. I mean it... ¨C If you really meant it, we wouldn¡¯t be having this conversation. ¨C Visionary replied, closing the laptop and packing it away. ¨C But look on the bright side: you got what you wanted. That¡¯s all that matters to you, isn¡¯t it? ¨C You know that¡¯s not how it is... ¨C Tyx said, running a hand over his lips while looking at Visionary. ¨C I didn¡¯t mean to harm you or anything like that... ¨C That doesn¡¯t matter now; I already authenticated the data and sent it to Division Zero. ¨C Visionary said, adjusting his glasses and clearing his throat. ¨C What? You always double-check everything before sending it. ¨C Tyx replied, gesturing incredulously with his hands. ¨C I thought you¡¯d come here to chew me out like always, and then I¡¯d explain it to you... ¨C So, you need to screw up behind my back, leave me to fix everything, and then come up with your excuses? ¨C Visionary snapped, standing up and glaring at Tyx with anger in his eyes. ¨C Damn it, Tyx, are you really that lonely!? Tyx opened his mouth to reply, but in the end, he stayed silent, nodding slightly instead. Visionary ran a hand over his face, turning his back to Tyx and shaking his head faintly. ¨C I¡¯m sorry... ¨C Visionary said, glancing over his shoulder. ¨C It¡¯s fine... ¨C Tyx replied, adjusting his hat. Visionary let out a sigh and sat down again, smoothing his hair as he did, partially covering his face with his hand. ¨C Let¡¯s talk about the test you scheduled... ¨C Alright, go ahead. ¨C Tyx said, lowering his hat to shadow his face. ¨C Since there are two versatile ones on the team, the test level was raised. ¨C Visionary explained, gesturing with his free hand. ¨C Today, we¡¯ll have four ¡°divergents¡±: two combatants, one tank, and a specialist. ¨C All that? Don¡¯t you think that¡¯s a bit much for the kids? ¨C Tyx asked, clasping his hands on the table. ¨C Clone will go first; despite being versatile, he¡¯s only allowed to perform as a combatant. ¨C Visionary explained, looking directly at Tyx, who merely nodded. ¨C He¡¯s permitted to use his abilities in combat, but only up to three copies at a time. ¨C At least there¡¯s that; one of those guys is enough! Imagine if he flooded the whole place! Haha! ¨C Tyx joked, shaking his head. Visionary forced a small smile but quickly regained his serious demeanor before continuing. ¨C The second will be a conjurer: Night Maker. The third is a specialist: Glass. ¨C Got it. ¨C Tyx replied curtly. Visionary paused for a moment, observing Tyx, who appeared slightly downcast. ¨C And for the tank, we have Bobby... Hearing this, Tyx froze for a second, then looked up to meet Visionary¡¯s gaze. ¨C Bobby... Wait, Bobby? Our Bobby? ¨C Yeah... When he heard you were starting a new team, he decided to lend a hand. ¨C I doubt it! Bet he¡¯s just here for the free food! Haha! ¨C Tyx responded, trying to hold back a grin. ¨C Man, to think it¡¯s been decades... Doesn¡¯t it remind you of the old days? ¨C Yeah... You¡¯re right... ¨C Visionary looked down at the floor, staying silent for a moment before averting his gaze. ¨C That¡¯s it then. Thanks for your time. ¨C Wait... ¨C Tyx said, standing up and moving toward Visionary, who was already heading for the door. ¨C Why don¡¯t you come watch the test? After all, Bobby will be there. What do you say? For old times¡¯ sake... Visionary avoided Tyx¡¯s gaze but eventually looked at him with a softened expression, letting out a faint sigh. ¨C Alright... For old times¡¯ sake. Ch. 3, Pt. 5: Transition ¡°So, the test will be at the Acropolis. I wonder what it¡¯ll be. The red-haired girl is already a hero, so she must know something.¡± Black stood to the left of the elevator, glancing sideways at Karoline, who seemed focused, one arm crossed while the other supported her chin. ¨C Karoline, right? ¨C Black asked, turning his face to look at her. The young woman simply turned her head toward him and nodded with a subtle smile. ¨C You said every hero was once a sidekick, so your old team must¡¯ve gone through a test like this, right? ¨C Black said, gesturing lightly with his right hand. ¨C Any idea what this test might be about? ¨C No idea, hehe. ¨C Karoline replied with a sheepish smile. ¨C Seriously? Aren¡¯t you supposed to be the most experienced person here? ¨C Demian¡¯s voice sounded from behind them. He was leaning against the glass of the elevator, looking down at his phone with a disinterested expression. ¨C I know most of the team tests, but each one is adapted so the team can solve the challenge. ¨C Karoline explained, turning to face both of them and biting her lower lip slightly. ¨C But I¡¯ve never seen the formation of our I.T team, so I can¡¯t say for sure. ¡°So, it¡¯ll be a surprise for her too...¡± Black nodded slightly, silent, his gaze fixed on the floor. ¨C I was trying to think of something... but I don¡¯t know how investigative teams work. ¨C Karoline said, placing one hand on her hip and gesturing with the other. ¨C Unfortunately, they¡¯re higher-ranked, so I¡¯ve never had the chance to witness one. ¨C What do you mean by rank? ¨C Black asked, raising an eyebrow. ¨C Besides the different categories, there are also ranks that determine the type of team and the tasks you¡¯ll be assigned. ¨C Karoline explained, pulling out a device resembling a smartphone from her pocket. ¨C Everything within the Convergence revolves around scores; the better your score, the higher your rank. She aimed the device at Black after a few taps; the screen displayed her photo, name, age, and rank: Hero Class C, alongside a QR code with the Division Zero logo in the center. ¡°So that¡¯s how it works. Emma did say everything we do here counts. If there¡¯s a way to score us, there must also be a way to monitor us...¡± Black stared at the device as Karoline turned it toward herself. ¨C And what¡¯s that device? I see almost every Convergent carrying one of these. ¨C he asked, nodding toward it. ¨C Oh, this? ¨C Karoline said, pointing to the device with a smile. ¨C This is the EPIC! It was created by the Convergence engineering team along with Visionary. Black nodded slightly, though his expression betrayed some confusion. Noticing this, Karoline let out a nervous laugh, running her hand through her hair. ¨C I wish I could explain more, but I¡¯m no expert on the subject... ¨C she said, slightly embarrassed, averting her gaze before looking back at him with some enthusiasm. ¨C What matters is that it¡¯s an amazing device! You know, it takes forever to run out of battery, never freezes, and has a great camera!Enjoying the story? Show your support by reading it on the official site. ¡°She¡¯s getting this excited just because she doesn¡¯t know much about the device?¡± Black smiled, raising both hands as a sign for Karoline to calm down. ¨C Alright! I get it; it sounds like you¡¯re trying to sell me a product... Karoline paused for a moment; her cheeks slightly flushed before letting out a genuine laugh. ¨C Sorry! Hehe. ¨C she said, giving Black a light pat on the shoulder. ¨C It¡¯s just that... ¨C Why don¡¯t we focus on something useful? Like what¡¯s going to happen during the test? ¨C Demian interrupted Karoline. He looked at them with half-closed eyes. Black initially glared at Demian, his brows slightly furrowed, before turning his gaze back to Karoline, who had dropped her smile. ¨C You said you¡¯ve seen some tests, right? ¨C Black asked. ¨C Do you think ours might be similar to any you know? ¨C That¡¯s the problem, it depends; for example, assault teams usually deal with physical challenges like combat or rescue missions. ¨C Karoline replied, looking at Black. ¨C Recon teams, on the other hand, handle tasks like infiltrating a location unnoticed or identifying points of interest. ¨C Wow! That was as helpful as saying math involves numbers! ¨C Demian said sarcastically with a forced smile. ¨C Now we¡¯re guaranteed to ace the test! ¨C You don¡¯t have to be a jerk just because she doesn¡¯t know what the test will be. ¨C Black said, glaring over his shoulder at Demian. Demian simply looked away, clicking his tongue with a displeased expression. ¨C Let¡¯s just focus on doing our best! ¨C Karoline exclaimed, clenching her fist with a confident smile. ¨C Let¡¯s think positively; everything will work out! ¨C Ugh, whatever... ¨C Demian muttered disinterestedly, crossing his arms and looking down. ¨C You said it yourself; there¡¯s a ranking, which means we just need to hit the minimum to pass. That¡¯s all that matters. Karoline turned to face Demian, who only followed her with his eyes. Her expression changed; she now looked at him seriously. ¡°Is she upset because of that? Yeah, she seems like someone who cares about that sort of thing.¡± Black merely watched the two, following the red-haired girl with his eyes to see how the situation would unfold. ¨C No! That¡¯s not right! ¨C Karoline said, stepping closer to Demian. ¨C How can you think that way? ¨C Oh, sorry, Captain Nepotism! But am I wrong? We don¡¯t need to follow your stupid ideal of ¡°I need perfect scores to prove I deserve to be here.¡± ¨C Demian shot back with a crooked smile, his brows slightly furrowed. ¨C In the end, it doesn¡¯t matter who finished first or last; what matters is passing! ¨C That¡¯s not the point... ¨C Karoline said, standing firmly in front of Demian with a serious posture. ¨C Spare me! Let me guess: now you¡¯re going to sound like the teachers, ¡°You need to do your best because blah blah blah...¡± ¨C Demian replied mockingly, shrugging. He was about to say more when Karoline stepped in closer, quickly placing her left hand on the glass and glaring at him with an austere posture. Demian gulped, trying to back away, but the glass behind him left no room. He tried to take a deep breath, averting his gaze slightly. ¨C This isn¡¯t just a grade on your report card; it¡¯s a test to see if you¡¯re fit to act as a Convergent! ¨C Karoline¡¯s firm voice echoed through the elevator as it slowly revealed the vast expanse of the Acropolis. ¨C After all, in a real-life situation, if you don¡¯t give your best, it¡¯s not just your rank position that will be at stake; it¡¯ll be the lives of your team, innocent people, and even your own! Silence lingered for a moment until Demian finally looked into Karoline¡¯s green eyes, which stared at him intensely. He nodded slowly, stepping away from Karoline and turning to face the glass, positioning himself with his back to the others. "She makes a good point, but it¡¯s interesting to know she cares more about people¡¯s lives than about a ranking... What a girl, huh..." ¨C She¡¯s right; we¡¯d better do our absolute best ¨C Black said, nodding approvingly at Karoline with a faint smile on his face. She returned the smile and then looked at Demian with some curiosity. ¨C Are you okay, Demian? ¨C Yeah... ¨C Demian replied, lightly running a hand along his neck while still keeping his back to them. ¨C You¡¯re right; I... I¡¯ll do my best... ¨C Are you sure? Listen, I¡¯m sorry if I came off a bit harsh; it wasn¡¯t intentional. ¨C Karoline said, offering a small smile. Demian slowly turned to look at Black and Karoline, his head slightly bowed. ¨C Stop this. I¡¯ll help the team, but that doesn¡¯t mean I want to be friends with you guys. ¨C He said, averting his gaze and briefly sighing afterward. Karoline pursed her lips as she observed him with a slightly dissatisfied expression but soon nodded affirmatively. ¨C I won¡¯t force you into anything if that¡¯s how you prefer it. ¨C She finally said, turning to Black and subtly rolling her eyes in his direction. "Heh, I guess even she has her limits when it comes to patience. Well, it¡¯s time to focus on what¡¯s ahead." Black simply smirked slightly and turned to face the elevator doors, which were drawing closer to their destination: Sector DELTA.
