《Phoenix in the Moonlight》 Chapter 1: Spring Dawn Chapter 1: Spring Dawn "Half awake on a spring dawn Hearing the birds'' song At night came sounds of wind and rain How many blossoms have fallen down?" In the spring of the twenty-fifth year of the Zhou Dynasty, the courtiers assembled to greet the Son of Heaven. They knelt on the floor reverently, waiting for the Emperor''s arrival. Wang Yifeng knelt alongside the men, ministers and generals alike. He heard the rustle of clothing as it brushed against the floor. He saw the side of the intricately embroidered shoes and the trail of zing yellow longpao as it moved past him. The dragon gown, with its auspicious embroidery and vibrant color, required four master tailors to work tirelessly for two years to make. He knew of this and he couldn''t help but think of the grandeur. Was this the time to adorn oneself in priceless pieces? The world was torn apart, citizens starving, civil unrest, and terrorists often infiltrating theirnds. This was the time for action, of pulling in their reigns and thinking carefully about where their dynasty was heading. He remained knelt as the Emperor took his seat on the grand throne. The crowd erupted in prayers for his longevity. Wang Yifeng followed, his voice lower than the others, his heart unchanging and insincere. That was his brother on the throne, the same one who had ughtered everyone he came across to usurp the throne, even poisoning his own Imperial Father. Court began as usual, with the courtiers presenting their case, pleading the emperor to head their warning and provide relief to the people. The Emperor remained stoic, acting benevolent. ''Wang Wei,'' he thought. ''How long will you pretend to be a good ruler? Have you no shame?'' He sneered in his heart. "Qinwang," he heard the Emperor call on him. "Dearest brother, it is time for you to rise on the opportunity." Wang Yifeng raised his head and bowed as he took the imperial order. "Your Highness," he acknowledged. "The Southern states are war-torn, the people are suffering and they are in dire need of your services. I know that you wish to live a life of peace, but no other is aspetent as you in these matters." Indeed, he simply wanted to remain a prince who liked his leisure and didn''t meddle in politics. But wasn''t the Emperor just pushing him to dangerous waters so that he could take care of the brother who was the only threat to his throne? The doubt in the courtiers'' hearts increased. For a king who didn''t even trust his own sons and daughters, how could he trust the brother who the previous emperor had favored. He had even provided the infant prince with a golden medallion that would protect him from all harm in the future, even if his imperial brothers and the crown prince conspired against him. Wang Yifeng scoffed internally. Of course, this was an act to send him out of the capital and ensure that the current crown prince could win over the courtiers. Furthermore, wasn''t this the perfect opportunity to punish him for marrying without the Emperor''s implicit permission? "As youmand, Your Majesty." "Hao, you will venture out to the southernnds ande back victorious, brother." The date was set. In a mere two weeks, he would have to leave to fulfill the mission given to him, leaving his newly wedded wife and mother in the Qin Wangfu vulnerable to all attacks from the Imperial house. As he entered his courtyard, he was followed by his trusted eunuch and his shadow guard. "Wangye, the consort wants to see you." He made a humming noise as he disrobed from his official attire. Putting on some light clothes and loosening his hair, Wang Yifeng strolled across his property towards where his newly-wed consort had been ced. Jia Lixue. True to her name, she was as beautiful as the falling snow and came from a wealthy merchant family. Though the outside world thought that he had married for love, he knew better. He was not in the position to give his heart or feel affection for anyone. His mother had taught him from a young age that the Imperial harem was not safe and feelings were vulnerabilities. His own mother was a noble consort, favored by the previous emperor, whereas the current emperor was the son of the previous Empress. The two mothers had fought tirelessly to keep their positions. How could the brothers have any shred of affection after that? And how could they afford to feel any weakness? He entered the courtyard and saw Lixue waiting for him. A gentle smile came upon his lips as he moved closer to her and pulled her into his embrace. "Beloved consort, you shouldn''t have waited for me outside," he told her, then moving to hold her shoulders and guide her inside the room. "What bothers you?" He could sense that she was agitated and he had an inkling what it was about. "Tomorrow, we must return to my paternal house to greet the elders," she said, as gentle as ever. She was merely sixteen summers old and full of romantic notions. She wanted flowers and affection and an informal rtionship with her husband. He had idealistic notions about being her husband''s only wife, but she didn''t have the position to be his legal wife. It made her anxious. What if he brought more women into the house? Wouldn''t she be an old, broken toy then? He could read her mind. Chapter 2: Accompany You Chapter 2: Apany You "I will apany you. You will not face any difficulties in your house." The reassurance was enough for the little girl. He was a man of twenty-four years of age, how could he not know what woulde tomorrow? He could only promise to not do her any wrong and apany her throughout life. "You do not need to worry about the gifts, I have already prepared them. You should rest." The Eunuch silently took his leave, moving out of the courtyard and rushing to the treasury to find suitable objects the wangye could present to his inws. The wangye and his new consort stay indoors, one reading a book while the other embroidered a handkerchief. Suddenly, he remembered the happenings of the court and moved his gaze to her. She seemed content with her circumstances, he could only imagine how she would react when she found out he would be leaving. "I will be leaving for the South in a few weeks. I have asked the servants to prepare. Is there anything you want me to bring back?" She looked up from her work, startled. "I hear that the silks of the south are very famous," she didn''t think much of it andmented. "I understand." He paused. "I do not know when I wille back, it will be hard on you." Something moved in his eyes. Though it was just for a split second, he caught it. "Don''t be distressed. I wille back," he reassured. Jian Lixue''s brow scrunched as she thought about what he said. What did that mean? He was just going on a trip. It was then that Wang Yifeng realized that the girl had no idea that the country was in turmoil. She was the protected little princess of her family, knowing no hardships. How could she know? They toiled the evening away, and when night came, he left for his courtyard, telling her that he had some business to attend to. Lixue stared at his disappearing silhouette and sighed in her heart. Like every other night, he had left her to spend time alone. Before her marriage, her mother had prepared her for her wifely duties, and she had looked forward to it, knowing that it was the only way she could make her way to his heart. She might not enjoy it herself, but it would bring him great pleasure and hopefully give him an heir he could spoil. All men wanted heirs, and she could only assume that her husband was the same. She sighed as she moved back into her room. "Bring me water to wash my feet," she ordered the old servant. She had been working for this family since before the wangye was born and she was surely not used to the bratty behavior of young girls who think they are something big because they married a good man. The servants the newdy had brought were equally arrogant. But at least, the momo had been in the imperial harem and knew how some people could behave when they thought they were on top of the world. She almost wanted to reprimand them for their behavior, for disbncing the harmony of the wangfu. The momo couldn''t say anything because the wangye had assigned her to take care of the consort, and she knew that it was a sign that the master cherished this woman. She didn''t dare trifle with such a major matter. Her master was gentle but harsh on those who didn''t follow instructions. Thedy had her dinner and then went to sleep. Lixue knew that tomorrow would be the best chance to persuade her husband lord. - - - The sun had barely risen and the birds chirped when the newdy and the wangye awoke and prepared for the journey back to Jian Lixue''s paternal house. They sat in separate carriages, as was the custom of propriety of their dynasty. As Lixue caught up on some sleep, Wang Yifeng was busy going through the book of four families, getting to know the history of his country. It spoke of war and who was on which side, and it wasn''t his first time reading it, either. The servants scurried to the gate when they saw the wangye and their young miss arrive. They greeted the couple whole-heartedly. Lixue''s mother hid in a corner, peering out and looking at her daughter to make sure that she was well taken care of. Her husband greeted the pair at the gate and seemed unbothered by such matters. "Wangye, wee to our humble abode." He bowed. The family sat in themon area, talking about everything about life, enjoying the snacks the servants served. Soon it waster in the morning and the couple were ushered away. Mother Jia pulled her daughter to the side for a chat. "Daughter, yourplexion looks good and the jewelry you are wearing has been prepared by the wang fu." Seeing that the prince was taking such good care of her daughter, some of her worry eased. As the mother, how could she stand to see her daughter unhappy? She embraced her daughter and pulled her to sit next to her. "Mother, don''t be worried," Jia Lixue emphasized. "The wangfu is veryfortable. Even the servants treat me with respect and consider my every whim. Don''t worry about me, please take care of your health while this daughter is away." Mother Jia felt tears prickle at her eyes. Chapter 3: Lit up the Wangfu Chapter 3: Lit up the Wangfu "Your father has so many servants and makes enough money. We won''t do poorly without you," she said. "Tell me, does the wangfu have any other consorts?" she asked in a low tone. Jia Lixue tucked her head down and shook her head. "Is something the matter?" she asked, suddenly sensing the change in her daughter''s behavior. "Mother, this daughter is scared. My lord husband is yet to ask me to serve him and he stays in his courtyard at night." She found the words rush out of her mouth. Once the daughter was married, she should not talk about such matters with her paternal family, but how could she repress the grievances in her heart? "You suspect that he has a woman outside?" Mother Jia asked, her voice raising a little. Jia Lixue looked around, startled by the loudness. She could see that none of the servants from the wangfu were there and her paternal house''s servants had tucked their heads down as if they had not heard anything. Wouldn''t everyoneugh if they found out that she was untouched even after so many days of being married? "He is a powerful man and such men are never satisfied with one woman. If he has another woman, he will not stop himself from bringing her into his household. Rest assured, it must be something else." This son-inw was sensible. What was it that troubled him enough to not touch his newly-wed wife? Could it be that he had some unspeakable problems? That should not be the case. "Don''t worry, daughter. I will speak to your father about this. He will surely help you get justice." Lixue nodded and said nothing further. Leaving Lixue to get a short nap, Mother Jia ventured towards where her husband and the prince yed chess and discussed the matters of the world. "I know that I have spoiled my daughter too much. I apologize for her disobedience," Father Jia said as they yed chess. Wang Yifeng didn''t look up but put on a gentle expression on his face, knowing that his father-inw was watching him closely. "Rest assured, she has lit up my wangfu since she entered. Your daughter has brought great joy to my life." The father-inw let out an involuntary smile. Indeed, the prince was good to her daughter; he had done good on epting this marriage. By no means was this a love marriage, but neither was it arranged. Qinwang had heard of Lixue''s proficiency in the four arts, her virtues and her beauty and came knocking on their door to propose marriage. Father Jia had been hesitant at first, knowing that marrying into the royal family could be disastrous, but when he considered that this prince only wanted a carefree life away from politics, he was reassured and quickly arranged for the marriage. This son-inw had evene with his daughter to visit the paternal family. Even though she was not the official wife, she received such favor and her whims were followed. He noticed a servant waiting to gain his attention and excused himself. "Master, the Mistress wishes to speak to you," the servant said softly. "Tell her to wait, I am busy," he replied gruffly. This wife of his was too willful. He could only hope that his daughter wasn''t the same. It would bring the house great dishonor. "She asked me to tell you that it is urgent and about the young miss." Father Jia''s brow rose in rm. About his daughter? He nodded at the servant and followed him out. "Wife, what is the matter?" he asked. Mother Jia told him about Lixue''s concerns and Father Jia felt his anger rise. This son-inw, what was he intending to do? "I will take care of it," he told her. "You go back and apany Lixue. I will take care of this." "Be careful. Don''t make the situation worse," she warned. Father Jia threw her a scathing look before turning to leave. She sighed and headed for the kitchen to ask them to prepare snacks for the men. He didn''t say anything at first, knowing that it would sound suspicious if he brought on the topic immediately after stepping out of the room. So, he waited until lunch was served. As the family congregated and sat in their respective positions, Wang Yifeng looked around and felt uneasy. Everything had gone smoothly so far, but the tension radiating from Mother and Father Jia told him that something ufortable would be thrown at him. The servants came in with tter after tter of food, going beyond to show the appreciation and generosity of the Jia household. Wang Yifeng hid his sneer. So, they wanted to show him that they could take care of his daughter even if he didn''t. He had even asked Jia Lixue to dress in robes and jewelry he had bought for her, so that they don''t think that she was treated poorly and had to resort to using the dowry sent by her family, but it seemed that her inws wanted to drive the point in. He nced at Mother Jia, who was staring at him with an expectant expression. Sighing, he put his chopstick in a random dish and tasted it. "Mother-inw, the dishes of this household are delicious. Please allow me to reward the cook," he said. There was nothing special about the food, but it wasmon courtesy. "No need, no need. It is an honor for the cook to be appreciated by wangye. If wangye wants, we can send some dishes that you like back to the wangfu with you." Mother Jia smiled and looked at Lixue in assurance. Her spirits lifted when she realized that her mother had done something to help her. Chapter 4: Until Our Hair Grows Gray With Age Chapter 4: Until Our Hair Grows Gray With Age The meal went harmoniously, until one of the rtives broached the topic of children. Though they definitely didn''t mean any harm, it was abundantly made known that they couldn''t wait for Jia Lixue to be with child. Father Jia smiled in approval, and Wang Yifeng was sure that he felt the same way. Children could strengthen the union between the royal family and his. Of course, he would want the benefits that came with being associated to the throne. Wang Yifeng didn''tment, acting dignified and not interrupting the conversation between the women. He could see Lixue stealing nces at him from time to time and knew that she had been the one to broach the topic with her parents. Inappropriate, he thought as he went back to eating his food silently. He knew for a fact that no one would be on his side when he revealed his decision not to impregnate Lixue. At least for then. He had no desire to be with her, but if his ns seeded, he would have to someday have rtions with her and let her carry his young. Until then, he nned on avoiding her. It was a good thing that the trip to the south wasing up shortly. "Wangye, something worrying hase to my ears," Father Jia started once they had gone back to his study to finish their game of chess. "This son-inw will try his hardest to soothe your worries." "It must be because we have not raised our daughter properly, but I havee to know that wangye doesn''t have any rtions with her. This one is concerned that wangye doesn''t like her anymore." Ah, so there it was, the final blow. "Rest assured, there is no such thing. My heart is devoted to your daughter and no one else resides there. I merely don''t wish for her to bear children while the times are so turbulent. A child should be brought into a peaceful world and cherished. Furthermore, Lixue is still young, her body is weak and may be harmed in childbirth. I do not want for my consort to suffer just to produce an heir." Father Jia''s heart moved slightly, but he held on. "Wangye is kind for thinking of Lixue so gently. Might I propose that you use medicine to stop pregnancy?" Wang Yifeng had expected such a response. "Father-inw, those medicines harm the body and shorten the lifespan. I wish to live a happy life with Lixue until our hair grows grey with age." He bowed. "Please understand." Father Jia looked at the prince in utter disbelief and helplessness. There was nothing he could say when the other professed such romantic wishes so unashamedly. They continued with the game until it was time to leave. The eunuch came and guided them to the carriage. "Lixue, sit with me in my carriage," he said as he entered. He saw the delight in her eyes and simply shook his head. She entered the carriage with the help of her servants and sat across from him, her face shy. "Wangye, thank you for apanying me today." "Dear consort, I have to speak to you," he said grimly. Not having seen him so serious, she panicked. He must have found out that she had told about their affairs to others. "I understand your concern over ourck of rtions, but rest assured, I will not send you back or question you." He stated simply. "I thought of no such thing!" she said nervously. "I''m not ready to be a mother yet," she whispered, breaking the silence in the carriage. "But that is not up to me." No. It was indeed not up to her. It was his decision if she came with any child of his or not. And he wanted no children. "I have heard from the old servants at my house that there is a soup that can prevent pregnancies. If wangye wants, I can take it." Heughed gently and raised his hand to hold her face. "I do not wish for you to undergo hardships because of me. Those things are bad for your health. Don''t think about it anymore." "But husband is going to the South. I have found out how dangerous it is there." Wang Yifeng looked at her without any expression. "Can wangye not go? Or take me with you." "The south is no ce for a woman," he said authoritatively. "And the work must be done by someone. His Majesty has entrusted the job to me and I must fulfill it. When I return, we will think about children." Of course, he wouldn''t. But she didn''t need to know that. "I understand," she said and looked away, moisture pooling in her eyes. Wang Yifeng knew better than tofort her at such a time. He shifted in his seat and looked at the book he had brought to entertain him during the ride. When they reached the wangfu, he led her to her courtyard and apanied her for dinner. Later, he kissed her forehead, asking her not to fret, before leaving for his study. Chapter 5: Silver Tongued Brat Chapter 5: Silver Tongued Brat His mother, Xia Jingfei, the noble consort of the previous emperor, had not deteriorated with time. Her face was still lively and the small lines around her eyes only appeared when she smiled. She had taken well care of herself over the years and still looked as youthful as ever. But Wang Yifeng''s mother was a vengeful woman, she had to be when she was vying for the emperor''s favor. And she received it. It says a lot about how scheming the woman was. In appearance, she was just as virtuous as her son, but deep inside she could see that this new marriage was not suitable. "Son, mother is worried, must you marry this girl?" she had asked when her son broke the news to her. He had always been independent and never one to rely on his mother, but it could be said that they had a good rtionship. "She is not from a noble family. Her father is a merchant!" Wouldn''t this hamper his footing in the court. In this harsh world, you needed to marry well to remain in power. A qinwang marrying down to such a level would cause others tough. "I have my own thoughts, mother. I will not trouble you with such trivial matters," he said as he offered her cup of tea. "You must tell me." She had worked too hard and gotten enough blood on her hands. She had to know that this son of hers was not walking down the wrong path. "Her father will benefit me greatly and open up avenues that can solidify my position," Wang Yifeng said vaguely. "You must not worry about this. She will be a consort. The position of my legal wife shall remain open." "I hope you will allow your mother to search for a suitable candidate." She would not allow the paranoid emperor to choose a bad wife for his son. To pull all the strings necessary, she would go to great lengths. "Son will do as mother says," he said lightly with a smile. He raised his hand to beckon the eunuch forward. Two servants with golden tters arrived inside the hall and presented the decorative jewelry to her. Several hairpins adorned with pearls and rubies, telling delicate tales and jade bracelets and rings of the highest quality. She brushed her hand over it, satisfied. "Son takes good care of me." She patted the back of his hand with hers and asked a servant to put a particrly beautiful hairpin into her styled hair. "There is no one as beautiful as mother," he ttered. "Silver tongued brat." Sheughed. "Now tell me, what do you want from me?" she gave him a sly smile. He coughed, trying to hide his embarrassment. "What? Did you think that I wouldn''t see through your plot?" "Son wouldn''t dare. Mother, indeed, knows best." He paused and looked at her expectantly. "Please teach this new son''s consort proper etiquette." Her expression did not falter. She smiled generously and agreed to his proposal. Once he left, she twisted the ring on her finger and sneered. Unfilial brat, he wanted to take away power from her. Did he think that she would give up her authority in the wangfu so easily? He could try, but he wasn''t old enough to handle the business himself. His immaturity would only lead to chaos, and as his mother, it was her duty to prevent him from bringing harm to himself. But this was before the marriage. Wang Yifeng''s mother had not met the new consort since she came. It had been a few days and the girl had note to greet her. "This Jia Lixue is a terrible girl, not following etiquette and dismissing her mother-inw in such a fashion," she grumbled to her trusted servant as she dressed for the day. "Feng''er will leave for the south in a few days and this girl is yet to share a bed with him." Her spies in Wang Yifeng''s courtyard had told her that he was yet to have any rtions with the girl. "I fear that he treats this Lixue too well. He is sparing her." "Grand Imperial Consort, please punish this servant for not filtering her words, but wangye is intelligent. He is still young and has time to bear heirs. The new consort is also young, they should have no problem." This older servant had been serving the grand imperial consort since she first entered the imperial harem. The servant herself was a little girl and had grown up with the grand imperial consort and done everything that was asked of her to strengthen the position of her mistress. It could be said that this servant was a close confidant and got away with a lot more than any other servant in the courtyard could. Xia Jingfei gave her servant a look "Lan Lan, don''t overstep your boundaries." The servant tucked her head and continued to dress the Grand Imperial Concubine. Chapter 6: Come Back Safe Chapter 6: Come Back Safe "Mother, son has brought his consort to greet you." Grand Imperial Concubine pressed her lips together and gave a forced smile. The others did not seem to notice her true thoughts. "Come, sit. It is gettingte. We must have breakfast now." The pair took their respective seats and proceeded to eat. "Jia Lixue, I hope the servants are treating you well?" she asked, stirring her hot soup. She gazed down at the slivers of smoke rising from it. "Mother, everyone in the wangfu has treated me well. They have given me everything that my heart desires," Jia Lixuemented. She wanted to have good rtions with her mother-inw, knowing that this woman would be her support in the future even if her husband took a legal wife. ''Mother?'' Xia Jingfei could only roll her eyes internally. ''You remember me now? Where were you the morning after your wedding?'' "Mother is d that you have taken this wangfu as your own." Though said politely, the implication was clear. Jia Lixue stiffened and looked towards Wang Yifeng for help only to find the other ignoring them. She had been used of running after luxury. She wanted to bite her lips and act pitiful, but a woman from the harem would never fall for the tricks that worked on her parents. "Lixue is fortunate that wangye and mother have epted me. I have been spoiled since young. I hope mother will teach me in the future." She could only say this much. If it had been her own home, she would haveshed out and given this old woman a piece of her mind, but here, she had to appear gentle and virtuous. That was the only way to survive until this old woman passed on to the next world. "Mother has always wanted a daughter. How can I bear to teach you when I wish to spoil you?" ''Of course I am not going to teach you how to be glib tongued, I don''t want you to surpass me.'' Lixue remained silent. It seemed that this mother-inw and daughter-inw rtionship was doomed to be strained. She could only believe in her husband and hope he would protect her. "Daughter,e pour some tea for mother," Xia Jingfeimanded. This was a ritual, and it had been postponed for too long in this case. Gathering her courage, Jia Lixue stood up and moved towards the front of the hall. The old servant who had been serving her since she came to the wangfu produced a pot of tea and a cup. She nodded at this servant and grasped the cup, conjuring her inner strength. "Jia Lixue greets Mother. May mother live for thousands and thousands of years." Grand Imperial Concubine shot her son a look and saw him looking towards the other direction, paying them no mind. It seemed that she and this daughter-inw had been left to bicker by themselves. He wouldn''t meddle. Good. She wouldn''t mind as long as Wang Yifeng didn''t side with the girl and remained unbiased. Xia Jingfei epted the cup of tea and drank it in one gulp. The servant by her side produced a green jade hairpin, which she took and ced it personally on Jia Lixue''s hair. She kept her tone light and breathy as she muttered the next words, "I do not ask much of you. Just remember that you must never say or do anything that will lose the face of this wangfu." "Lixue will remember this," she replied sincerely. "Good. You may rise," Xia Jingfei said. Jia Lixue took the opportunity to retreat and take her seat. She sighed in relief and leaned in for a cup of water. She suddenly felt very thirsty. "Feng''er, when do you leave for the South?" Xia Jingfei asked after a long silence. "I leave in two days, mother. I will bid you farewell before I leave." His simple words made her brows knit.It gave her little to no assurance. This son of hers was secretive and never opened his mouth to tell her what he was nning. She knew that the Emperor was sending Wang Yifeng into perilous waters to punish him and she couldn''t help but loath that girl Lixue for it. Rationally, she knew that it was her son who pursued this marriage, but she couldn''t afford to be angry at the boy whom she had raised with her blood and tears. She had killed to protect him and ce him where he was today. How could she be angry at him? He was a projection of her sess. If only the previous empress and crown prince hadn''t poisoned the previous emperor, she would have sessfully ced her son on the throne and ruled on her behalf. Taking care of the other princes would have been easy. She gritted her teeth as she thought back. "I have promised Jia Lixue that I will bring back silk for her. Mother, do you want something from the South?" So this stinky girl had already made her demands. What face did she have demanding gifts when her husband was going to fight for his survival? "I only want Feng''er toe back safe. Mother cannot bear to see you suffer." She dabbed the corner of her eye with her handkerchief. "Son is merely going on a diplomatic trip. I am honored that the Emperor thought me sufficient." Grand Imperial Concubine curled her fingers into a fist and bitterly looked at her distant son. She simply nodded and asked the servants to prepare well for the trip. The next two days, the wangfu was busy preparing for the wangye''s impending trip to the south. Clothes, food, dried edibles and his most trusted servants were collected in one ce. The edict from the emperor came. He had granted fifty soldiers to Qinwang for his travel. The emperor had wished him a safe trip. Wang Yifeng epted the edict with grace and replied kindly. Chapter 7: Truly Good at Bullshitting Chapter 7: Truly Good at Bullshitting His shadow guards retreated, only the servants remaining. Wang Yifeng knew that someone had put the idea in the emperor''s mind. His shadow guards would give their life to ensure his safety, but would the royal guards do the same? He didn''t think so. He suspected that something unbing would meet them on the journey and prepared for it. On the day of the journey, Jia Lixue clung onto his sleeve and cried, asking him not to go. "My heart hurts, wangye." Her rosy cheeks were stained with tears, her eyes glossy and making her look pitiful. If it had been any other man, he wouldn''t have been able to hold back from expressing his love. But this was Wang Yifeng. He smiled as he wiped the tears on her face and pressed his lips to her forehead. That was considered more than constion. It was the affection of such a powerful man. Those who looked on were filled with envy and wonder. The Qinwang was in love with his consort and never looked at other women. While the men could admire, the unwed women and servants could only grit their teeth and wait for a time when they were no longer in love. The procession was nothing grand, considering that they were going to abate a civil disobedience. Grandeur would ruin their reputation. The royal guards rode alongside them and the servants followed the carriage. Wang Yifeng spent his time as usual, studying the maps of the south and the intelligence he had received about the key yers in the region. There was corruption and lechery in abundance and the men had forgotten that there was the royal family who had their eyes on them. Wang Yifeng knew that he had to bring them under order. He quickly listed who to bring in his faction and whose power to usurp. By the end of three days of the journey, he was done with his n, now he would only have to step carefully and fulfil it seamlessly. On the fourth day, they entered the wilderness. The guards looked out for the wild animals that threatened them. Wang Yifeng noticed early in the morning that the forest was devoid of sounds. He had expected to hear the sound of birds and that of prey and predator going about their lives, but the eerie calm told another story. Night fell and they set up camp. Wang Yifeng found himself walking around the wilderness, waiting for the attack toe. He had known that it wouldn''t happen during the day, but in the shadow of the knight, the royal guards would have more reason forxing on their duty. It woulde after they had gone to sleep. The ones on night shift would be swiftly taken care of and his tent would be raided. He knew how it would go, and he didn''t think much of it. When he came back, the eunuch trailed behind him and dismissed everyone else from the tent. The servants who were preparing the bed retreated. "This small one awaits yourmand," he said. "Remain by my side tonight and prepare the peach blossom needles for yourself." Coldly, he moved to the bed and disrobed. He kept his trusted knife under his pillow and slowly closed his eyes. Time passed and the noises of the camp ceased. In the dead of the night, the rustle of the tent''s p caught his attention. His lips curled up. Sitting up, he nced at the figures in ck. Their faces covered and swords in their hands, they approached him. Wang Yifeng could see the surprise in their eyes. They had not expected him to be awoken so easily. "Finally here," he taunted. The eunuch standing at the side nced at the prince and waited for the signal. "Come, let this prince see what you are made of." Daring words, they thought. For a carefree prince who had no knowledge of martial arts, he was truly good at bullshitting. The swords came at him in one go and he dodged without flinching. He flew to the back of the tent, his hands tucked behind him, a cruel look in his eyes. From their moves, they were not royal guards. They were mercenaries contracted to kill him. Good, good. They wanted to keep this hidden. Wang Yifeng deduced that it was not the Emperor but someone from the royal family. He could think of a few names, the one that came to his mind instantly was the Crown Prince, Wang Wenyin. The crown prince had limited power in court, as the courtiers thought him wasteful and lustful. He had seven concubines at the age of twenty and waspeting with Wang Yifeng to strengthen his hold. There were still a lot of loyal followers of Wang Yifeng who hoped that he would take the throne after the current Emperor. If not for the circumstances at the time, he would have been crowned. Wang Wenyin knew this and nothing was stopping him from acting on his hatred. He had to make sure that no one found out that it was him behind the assassination or that his father was used. The men at power in the south had already heard of the arrival of the Qinwang and it was expected that they would try to curb his power or do away with him before he could meddle in their business. It was the perfect alibi. ''Well yed,'' Wang Yifeng thought. ''But I am a better yer.'' Chapter 8: Covered in the Blood of the Assassins Chapter 8: Covered in the Blood of the Assassins He lunged at them one after the other, using the eunuch as his first line of attack. The eunuch shot at the assassins with the poisoned needles, incapacitating them before Wang Yifeng got to them. He stabbed their jugr first, smiling when the blood sttered. Then he would go for the heart, the stomach and finally, slit the throat. It was not enough to kill them, but it would leave them bleeding to death. In the battlefield, such measures were frowned upon, but this was private. Wang Yifeng had never followed rules or given his opponent the chance to attack. If they didn''t want him alive, he didn''t have to feel sorry for killing them. Each kill did notst for more than a few seconds, and soon the ck clothed meny strewn across the tent. The eunuch inspected the scene and felt the hair at the back of his neck rise. When he saw the prince, covered in the blood of the assassins, his eyes shining with delight, he felt horror rush through him. It was not his first time seeing the man kill, but he never got used to it. "Take care of the mess, I will go take a bath." He walked out of the tent. Not a soul was awake, the guards were unharmed and he was leftughing under his breath. He walked towards the river from where the servants had refilled their water supplies. He sat on a rock on the riverbank and gazed at the night sky, littered with stars. Eventually, he felt dissatisfied and took off his outer robe. He waded into the water, dipping his head below and emerging after a few seconds. He scrubbed his face and body, ridding himself of the rust-like smell. With water dripping from his body and still d in the clothes he had worn to ughter those men, he returned to the tent. It was as if nothing had happened. The eunuch stood in silence, waiting for his order. Wang Yifeng changed into new robes. Lying back on his bed, he fell into peaceful sleep. - - - It had been a week since he arrived in Lijiang. Time had been spent meeting all the officials and understanding the severity of the situation. For the first time, he had some time to himself and none of the royal guards followed him. He walked through the city in in clothes and soaked in the unfettered noise of the crowd. For a moment, he forgot that this city hosted one of the most prolific terrorist groups terrorizing the country. The dissenters? He knew some of them, had shared schooling and ygrounds with them when he was younger. It took him a couple of hours before he could shake off the guards from his trail. He found himself entering the ''Youth Hall,'' amon ce for young masters toe to entertain themselves. The courtesans greeted him but he ignored them and moved past towards where the offices were. The courtesans looked beautiful and the drinks flowed. Money was thrown and people drowned in pleasure. Despite his virtuous reputation, he enjoyeding to the pleasure houses and looking at elegant women showing off their skills. Li Jie must have gotten news of his arrival as he walked down the stairs and greeted him. "Come,e, old friend. Wee to my little business." "I am not sure why you opened this ce, but it seems like a good ce to be." Wang Yifeng gave a sly smile and followed his friend up to the private rooms. "You look too tense, Qinwang," Li Jie told him over the music with a p on his shoulder. "Would you like to entertain yourself and take the edge off?" Wang Yifeng found himself nodding. Then he sighed. It had been some time since he had visited a pleasure house, he had almost forgotten. "All right. Let''s go. I have a new courtesan you might enjoy." Li Jie grinned widely and jerked his chin towards the direction of the stage. "I will send some of them to youter. We could all use some time off." For the next hour, they talked business. Chapter 9: The Veiled Woman Chapter 9: The Veiled Woman Sitting in one of the chairs, Wang Yifeng leaned forward and sipped on the ss of wine as they talked about the shipment that would arrive from across the borders next week. Though he didn''t deal in drugs, he felt like he should be more involved in the ck market and how it works. Someday he would have to oversee it and make sure things don''t get out of hand. Li Jie was notorious for his connections to the underworld, he dealt in drugs, gambling and pleasure houses to name a few, whereas Wang Yifeng was more interested in taking care of nuisances and making them disappear. The deserts were big and finding bodies was impossible. He didn''t do it for money, he did it more to clear his way. There were too many people who were after him. The wine slowly took effect and he felt less mncholy. He loosened the cor of his clothes and leaned back. "Miss the new consort?" Li Jie teased. He scoffed and poured himself another ss. "You know well that I have no love for that woman. As long as her father supports me and opens up the trade routes, I will treat her well." "I wonder if they know that," Li Jie snickered. "Probably not. That would go against your pristine reputation. How could such a virtuous man vie for the throne or marry to benefit. He possibly can''t be that ruthless. Coming to a whorehouse? Never!" "Do not remind me," he muttered, dragging a hand over his face. He had to pretend to be carefree so that the king wasn''t suspicious of him. But who could say what that paranoid old man was thinking. He didn''t even trust his own sons. "At least I get along with Jia Lixue and her family. I don''t see any problems in the future." And he hoped that it would remain that way. He had been active in the nning of the wedding, ushering her in with all respect even though she was not the official wife. He had smiled and reacted the way a lovesick man would. In the end of the day, it was business, a way of tying himself to the merchants and gaining control over them. "You are lucky to have been sent here so early after your wedding. Imagine spending the night with a woman you don''t like." "We all marry and we never marry someone we love. It is part of our life. You muste to terms with it someday Li Jie," he said coldly. It was the truth of their life. What was love? "Come,e, let''s not talk about the grim reality of our lives. Let me call one of the new courtesans. She is quite a talent." Li Jie said, nodding at him. He shrugged. "Send her in." Soon, three beautiful d women walked in, ready to perform for them. Thest one who walked in had a brilliance that outshone the others. She had a veil on her face, only her eyes peering out and piercing into his soul. "Xin, love,e forward. Show this young master a good time," Li Jie said. He remained at a distance from her and she didn''t smile coyly like the others. To have such dignity in such a wretched ce, indeed a grand feat. She nodded her head and walked over to him, her clothes cascading over her body and making her look as if she were floating towards him. He found himself smiling, enchanted by her. "Master," she greeted. He could sense the smile in her voice. He hid his lips with his ss and jerked his head, asking her to begin. "This one can see that Master is sad. I will try my best to uplift your spirits." Her ent is that of someone from the capital and her bearing that of someone with qualification. Her hands moved with the grace of flowing water, and her eyes held emotion that he couldn''t fathom. A simple courtesan who could dance so well what a bewitching creature. He watched enraptured as he twirled and curved, arching her body and arms, her posture nothing short of divine. She hummed to herself, following the beat and missing none. Her hair flowed behind her, making him want to twirl a strand between his fingers. Indeed, she had managed to cheer him up. He finally gave in to his urge and stood up, moving towards her. Seeing him move, she startled and bent down, kneeling on the floor. "Young Master, I apologize for offending you. Please spare me," her voice was low and pitiable, but he could sense a wild ir to it. Almost challenging him to take action. Provocative. He just had to reach out to her and lift her up by the shoulders. "What is your name?" he asked huskily. For a split second she looked up and their eyes met. What a vivid and bewitching shade of ck they were. Itplimented her snow white skin and ink ck hair. "Xin." Chapter 10: Enjoy the Ride * Chapter 10: Enjoy the Ride * [Warning: This chapter contains explicit sexual content. Read at your own risk.] He was tempted. Tempted by her virtue. Tempted by the passion he sensed in her. And he knew in that moment, he had to possess her. Beautiful. As he reached towards the veil, she moved her face away. "Young Master, don''t be enraged. This small one doesn''t wish to show her face." His eyes cooled, but he knew what he wanted. "Reason?" he asked simply. "I cannot say," she whispered. "Hao." He didn''t hold back. He leaned in and dropped a kiss on her soft neck. He pulled her closer and bit her gently. "Yifeng. She only offers her skills," Li Jie warned. He was not one to stop his friend from seeking pleasures, but his establishment had some rules. Rules that needed to be followed. "Does thedy have an objection?" Wang Yifeng asked, his voice clear. She didn''t respond, but clung onto him, her eyes wide and wanting. She didn''t need to tell him. "Li Jie, I don''t think this woman wants to part with me." His friend sighed and ushered the other girls out. He could only shake his head. Whoever could deny the charm of the prince. Wang Yifeng pulled her towards the seat and ced her on hisp, kissing her over the veil and caressing her neck with his hand. He so wished to push his tongue into her mouth and explore the treasures she hid underneath. But he would respect her wishes, for now. She moved on hisp, repositioning herself to straddle him and grind, swivelling and rolling onto his member from over theyers of clothing between them. Feeling him stiffen, she hummed contentedly, making him break out in gooseflesh. That little sound did something inspicable to him. She was just like a little bird. "I wish to see you," he demanded. His meaning was not lost on her. Yet she didn''t listen. She kept moving on top of him, driving him mad. For some reason, he wasn''t enraged by her disobedience. He simply grabbed her bottom and kneaded it, keeping his focus on the beautiful arch of her neck. She felt his hand move across his arms to his shoulder and then to his hair. He smiled on her skin as he felt her pull on the hair ornament and free his locks. She was forceful in her movement, pulling at the soft strands at the back of his neck as she moved. He realized what he disliked about that woman, Lixue. She looked at him with the need for love, whereas this woman... she was all fire and passion. He didn''t want a princess, he wanted insanity and understanding. ''There is something wrong with me.'' He knew. "Remove your clothing," he warned. This time, there is no room for disobedience. She moaned and leaned back as he watched hungrily. She undid her belt and then quickly shrugged off the garment. Left in her inner garment and syed on top of him with her clothes hanging loosely from where she sat on him, she was a sight to behold. Wang Yifeng lifted her up and discarded her of anything remaining, seeing the expectation in her eyes. "You are getting married," she hummed and scooted closer, pushing her gloriously naked body against his. "Is this yourst celebration?" He stopped. Looking up, he saw that she meant nothing by it, but he was angered. "Come, take me in your mouth." He had heard of the great pleasures, and knew that no noble wife would do this, but her she would do it to please him. She wordlessly fell to her knees and helped him take his clothing off. She parted his legs and put her mouth on him. His eyes flitted closed and he sighed as he helped her, discovering the great pleasure. He groaned as he guides her with his hands in her head, his head lolling back, unable toprehend the pleasure coursing through him. She did this well too well. She hummed around him, causing him tough and moan at the same time. It felt so good, yet it still made her sound so cute. Who would have thought that a woman doing something so lewd could be called cute. Not wanting to reach climax like this, he panted and pulled her up. She looked at him with innocent eyes as she found herself ced on hisp yet again. "May I enter you?" he asked. It took him by surprise, too. Yes, she whispered as she shifted. He steadied her with his arms and gently sank her onto him. He breathed out a ragged breath and squeezed his eyes shut. He was almost lost in her warmth and wetness, but the intense need to move overtook every other sense. He pulled her up and dropped her back on, sliding in and out of her with ease. He swore, making her giggle and vibrate on him. His eyes snapped open and he red at her. He couldn''te to admit how good that little vibration felt. Soon, she grabbed his shoulder and started to move. Her little sounds took him off guard. Without a doubt, she was the most beautiful woman he hasid his eyes upon, only if she were a little less thin. He cupped her breasts and simply enjoyed the ride. Chapter 11: Thoughts of Punishment * Chapter 11: Thoughts of Punishment * "Kiss me," he said, his eyes zing with need. She quickly covered his eyes and in an instant, he felt her hot breath hovering over his parted lips. He felt the softness and the moisture as her tongue pried out and asked for attention. No, he didn''t like to kiss. He didn''t even like the touch of others, but this woman yes. He moved her hand away, needing to see her face, but was met with the veil. She was a fast one, and he almost admired her stealth begrudgingly. Suddenly, he wanted to punish her for not giving him the pleasure of seeing her fully. Hey bare in front of her, not a shred of shame in sight, and she was still holding onto that veil. He twisted their bodies over, pressing her into the ground and thrusting into her forcefully. He cursed as he heard her moan, all thoughts of punishing her gone. ''She is enjoying it!'' he thought helplessly. Their foreheads touched as they both looked down to where they were joined. What a sight. In and out of her he moved, so good that he almost wanted to explode. He was unable to pull out of her in time as he exploded. She followed soon after as he continued to thrust into her, trying to give her the same pleasure she had brought him. She cried out, pulling herself closer to him and they embraced until they came down from their high. He left shortly after, leaving her dazed. She doesn''t expect him toe back for another taste and she was somewhat bewildered that she had given her first time to this unknown man. But all she could reason was that such pleasure could not be wrong. She pushed her hair out of her face and tied it back neatly. She gave onest nce to the room and left it with a cold expression. - - - Wang Yigeng nodded at Li Jie and ordered the two men to kneel. "Come, tell me the truth, who ordered you to enter this city?" he sneered. He ced a foot on one of the men''s shoulders and pressed down. The man remained unmoved, hardened from his training. He was slightly impressed. These two had been tied and tortured for the past couple of days and had yet to utter a single word. "Cut off their tongues if they don''t speak. They will still have hands to write their confessions." In reality, he knew who was behind all of this and it had taken him three weeks to catch these two men. They had tried to escape twice, but he had followed their trail and found the mastermind. This was just the tip of the iceberg, there was a lot he still needed to do there. Heughed to himself. He wasn''t in a hurry to go back to the capital, he liked the south quite a bit. These men might not have been born here, but this would be their resting ce. They wailed as Wang Yifeng neared them with a knife, ready to cut off his tongue. Some people did know that the Qinwang didn''t joke and he wasn''t as nice as they made him out to be. And knowing this was a crime in itself. They could only cry and hope that their master woulde to rescue them before they were killed. But there was little hope. They were small fries in the vast world, just pawns that could be discarded when their needs were finished. "Please don''t!" one begged, sobbing. The other tried to hold him off. "Stop it. I don''t want to die..." "Speak." "We are just mercenaries who get paid to do the dirty work. We are from the city of Han and our master received money to carry out this mission. Please spare us." Wang Yifeng scratched his chin and looked at Li Jie. "What do you think?" he asked a young servant who he had newly taken in. He was the bastard son of one of the lowly officials and had offered his services. He thought himself special because of his lineage, but Wang Yifeng had met many such people like him. He was a lot younger, maybe fifteen or sixteen, and still unaware of how the world worked. The wide-eyed boy wiped off the sweat on his brow after all the digging. This was just the beginning of his training. This boy needed to learn how to be humble and take orders. In this world, there was always someone better than you. Knowing that was the only way to survive. Wang Yifeng could have asked one of the others to do the task, but he couldn''t pass up on the opportunity. Simply put, he didn''t like this boy. "As your highness wishes," he said, trying his hand at ttery. Living away from the capital and being a bastard had stopped him from learning the wiles of ttery. Wang Yifeng didn''t bother and was somewhat irritated. He pulled his eyes back to the men who would soon be dead. This country was not one to be trifled with. They had tried to weasel their way inside, knowing that the royal family would be harmed. The dynasty''s rule was indisputable, so they had to pay for their mistakes. "Some people should know their ce," he told them, unsheathing his sword. The sharp noise brought on a bout of sobs from the men, especially the one who confessed. "Firstly, you will serve as an example. No one who wants to harm Zhou will survive. And secondly, you should never tattle. I would have respected you more had you not given in." For mercenaries, they were weak. Chapter 12: All a Farce Chapter 12: All a Farce "You had all of these things in your own city, but you just couldn''t contain your greed, could you?" he said to no one in particr. He didn''t wait for answers, raising his sword, he sliced down, ending their lives. Two thuds followed as they fell to the ground. He looked down on them with satisfaction. Indeed, another job well done. "Let us head back to the house." With that he turned around, leaving the little servant to take care of the bodies. He would have to face the music himself. He reached before the others. Li Jie must have felt bad for the little boy and stayed back to supervise. Well, he was an adult. He could do whatever he wanted. A weekter, Wang Yifeng was still buried in work and monitored by the royal guards. He remained working and acting like the ideal prince, helping to eradicate the hardships of the people. Sometimes he thought back to the little bird from the pleasure house. He had paid handsomely when he left, leaving her a tip. Who knows how much she needed it. He thought back to his own Imperial Father with his harem of innumerous women and children. He was just one of them. Men of their times could have as many women as they wanted, and none were devoted to their wives. It was impossible when one didn''t marry for love. ''Love,'' he scoffed. That was all a farce. It was all about money and power. All the princes had multiple concubines. And his friend, Li Jie, slept with one of the numerous women in the pleasure house. His wife remained blinded by his appearance and seeming dedication. The eunuch had announced Li Jie''s arrival while Wang Yifeng read some documents. He looked up to see his friend standing at the door. Li Jie took a seat across from him and informed him of everything that had transpired in thest week. Wang Yifeng listened silently andmented on their further ns. Once tea was brought in, the two settled into talking about private affairs. "You have a courtesan that I like," Wang Yifeng said suddenly. "What was her name again? Xin?" he pretended not to remember. Li Jie chuckled. "Ah yes, Xin." "How about you give her to me?" he sipped on his tea. "Apologies, my friend, you are only here for a short period of time, and I can''t just give away my precious treasure to you," he taunted. Wang Yifeng red at him. "What will it take?" he asked calmly. There was value for everything in the world, and Xin was no exception to the rule. "How about a cut from the new shipment that we are going to receive? I hear it is a huge deal." Wang Yifeng sighed. "Fine. I promise." "Then you can have her." He found himself smiling. "Then I will go back to that ce and bring her with me." The guards remained stoic as he walked out with Li Jie at his side. In the past week, the Qinwang had strengthened his forces and brought his own servants onboard. They didn''t have much opportunity to follow him around any longer. They could only quietly watch as the prince came and went. As they entered the Youth Hall no one greeted him. It was a pleasant change as Wang Yifeng didn''t enjoy being mobbed. "Let''s take a seat in front of the stage," he said, hoping that he would see Xin. This would be herst night working there and she was yet to find out. Wang Yifeng wanted to personally break it to her and he was in no run. Halfway through his drink, she finally appeared on stage, apanied by four other courtesans. How had he forgotten how irresistible she was? The men around him ogled her shamelessly and he wondered, with a surge of anger unfamiliar to him, how many people she had entertained since hest visited. Ten? Twenty? He winced. His only constion was that she would not have to offer her body to the highest bidder. He could see the smile in her eyes when she spotted him. It was undeniably seductive and he chuckled. He beckoned her to him, making her dance her way to him. He handed her a couple of silver tails which she kept without hesitation. "It has been a long time, Young Master." Her voice tickled his ear. Theints ringing out around him only made him feel more satisfied. "How have you been, little bird?" he asked as he caressed her cheek. She closed her eyes for a fleeting second before meeting his gaze head-on. "I have been well," she said, moving away from him slightly. He frowned, holding onto her wrist and pulling her close. The grumbles around them rose. "Young Master must have forgotten about me because he has a beautiful wife." There was a fire in her eyes and no usation. She simply didn''t care, but seeing his possessiveness, she couldn''t help but point it out. Heughed through his nose, "I am far away from home and on business. Aren''t you happy to see me?" She nodded. "Good." He pulled her through the room and into a private room he had reserved for himself. "I have something I must ask you, my little bird." Inside the room, she was uninhibited, letting him caress her as he pleased. He sucked in a deep breath as she saw the need in his eyes and swore in the name of the gods. "Do not move," he ordered. "I cannot think when you squirm in my arms, woman," he grunted. She hid her face in the crook of his neck andughed, making him smile. Within the next second, she sat up straight and moved away. "I''m listening, Young Master," she said amused. That was the second time he noticed how beautiful her eyes were. Dark and rich, unfathomable. "What do you wish to ask?" He shook his head, clearing his mind. "How much do you make here?" Chapter 13: Not a Servant Chapter 13: Not a Servant "Not enough," she replied, moving her head to the side. "I have two kids at home to feed. It is not easy." He felt himself stiffen. "You have kids?" She looked her over. She looked like a young woman and she was definitely not married. Sheughed. "My brother was imprisoned for petty crimes, leaving his two kids with me. I take care of them." He sobers quickly. "And how old are you?" he asks. "Twenty, Young Master." She gazes at him curiously. Twenty and unmarried, he had questions. Surely she could find a husband and settle down. She seemed to have read his mind. "I have no family and connections. What husband would take in apromised woman who raises two kids on her own?" She moved her head to the side, hiding from him. "You must not hide from me, little bird." He paused. "Are you ashamed of what you do?" "I only perform for money, there is no shame in what I do. But my virtue is measured by my association with this ce. I do what I have to, I must survive for the sake of those kids." There is a need to survive in her which he admires. He sees his own wishes reflected in her eyes and he nods slowly. He wants her, so he decides to show her what he has to offer. "You will no longer work here," he tells her without hesitation. Her eyes widen and she looks panicked for a second. "I have spoken to Li Jie, he has allowed you toe with me." "To be a servant in your household?" she asks. She is ready to refuse the offer, he can see, so he quickly amends. "No. Not as a servant." That is all he says. "After I talk to Li Jie, I will take you away with me." She blinks in confusion but mutters an agreement. She can always run away if she doesn''t like what he proposes. - - - "I don''t understand what is so special about Xin?" Li Jiements as he counts the money he has made that day. The truth was that Wang Yifeng didn''t really know what was special about her himself. Or if there was anything that set her apart from other girls. He just knew that she met his standards and aroused his curiosity. Wasn''t that enough for him to do what he was doing? He couldn''t imagine feeling the same arousal with Jia Lixue. One look at the girl and he knew that she wanted undying love- something he couldn''t give her. Moreover, she was barely an adult, innocent and juvenile, not yet ready to take up the role of a consort. Also, he didn''t find the girl attractive. "There is just something..." he trailed off, unable to answer properly. Li Jie nodded. "I know what you mean. Qian Yuan makes me feel the same way. Maybe I should buy her a home to call hers." He contemted. "I n to do the same. I do not know how long she will arouse me, so, until that, I will keep her by my side." He reached into his sleeve and produced a piece of paper. "But first, I must know everything about her." He couldn''tpromise his identity because he desired her. His ambition came before everything else. "Xin, don''t know her real name. Twenty years old and her family is from the capital, mostly deceased due to the disease that swept across the capital a few years ago. Her brother, his two children, and she survived but couldn''t afford to live in the capital any longer. They moved here shortly after and her brother was the primary breadwinner until he was caught for some petty crimes." Wang Yifeng raised a brow. "It was just theft, that too a small amount, but it was the second time he had been caught, so the magistrate sentenced him. He should be released in a couple of years," he smirked. "I hired her without a second thought because she is skilled and has the favour of many customers." He clucked his tongue, side-eyeing his friend who was still listening. "What a shame. She brought in so much money." He sighed. "And I am paying you tenfold the earnings." "I agree. It is a generous offer, which is why I congratte you from the bottom of my heart. I am richer now only if she agrees." He grinned. Wang Yifeng pursed his lips. Of course, she would agree. "Of course," he said as much. "You''re just a rich young master who is traveling to town. She doesn''t know you are the highly esteemed qinwang. She must think she has a lot to lose," he taunted. "You better worry about your own woman What did you say her name was? Ah, Qian Yuan." He threw his friend a smirk and then left. The eunuch bowed deeply when he saw the veiled woman the prince had brought to the house. He was stunned, but of course, couldn''t let the prince know that this was a bad decision. If someone found out wouldn''t the prince''s pristine reputation be tainted? "You wish for me to be your mistress, don''t you?" she asked as he led her to his room. He grinned and ushered her into the room. "I am ttered, young master." He raised a brow. She sounded a little insulted, but he wouldn''t tell her that she knew. What was the use of acknowledging? He could just convince her to stay. "I was hoping that you would be ttered." He looked at her carefully and saw the little smile in her eyes. Amused, was she? "Do you agree?" he asked, just in case. "I am still contemting," she tried to look indifferent. "May I call you Yifeng?" she asked boldly as if this would be the deciding factor. He hadn''t expected that, and it was not proper. But there was nothing proper about their rtionship. "Yifeng you may, only in the throes of passion. Otherwise, just call me young master." He still had some rules to follow and he couldn''t let his servantsx when they saw their master letting a woman do as she wished. "I understand." She was unmoved. He looked deeply at her. He had almost given in. By the gods, she was a dangerous woman. Chapter 14: Ruin Your Life for Ripping me off Chapter 14: Ruin Your Life for Ripping me off "Come, I shall show you around the ce." And he did. Hand in hand, they walked across the tall library and plethora of rooms. He would willingly give her this house once he left. "This is where you shall share my bed." He pointed at the grand bed in the room. "I am usually in the study or taking care of business, so you will only see me at night or during meals if I am free." She stepped into the room, not at all ashamed, and appraised it. She turned to him and looked at him with a critical look. "What is expected of me, if you don''t mind me asking, young master." She smiled. "And what do I get in return?" He paused and looked her over once. "Aside from my body," sheughed, throwing her head back. "Can you cook?" he asked, clearing his throat. He rarely had the time to eat proper meals despite the kitchen sending him food every meal. All he wanted was a nice meal cooked by the hands of a woman who was intimate with him like thosemoners enjoyed. She gave him a weird look. "Does the Young Master not have kitchen staff?" "I do." So she couldn''t cook. "Then yes, I can cook. But I am not sure if my dishes will be to your taste." She had a lot of fire in her, he liked that. He grinned broadly and held his hands behind him, stopping himself from ravaging her. "Apologies," he said politely. "I don''t ask for much. Just you and meals cooked by you a couple of times a week. Andmitment, of course." She was not allowed to see other men. No. There was no way. He would probably kill anyone whoid their finger on her. "You may work at the Youth Hall, but only when I am there and you are avable to me at all times. No more dancing." It was too enticing. He paused. Then what was she supposed to do there? She thought bitterly. "In return, I will give you everything your heart desires-" She cut him short. "This has nothing to do with my heart, young master." She shook her head. "I want to be taken care of, but my heart shall have nothing to do with this?" This was the first time he had heard of a woman who wouldn''t allow herself to love a man she was sleeping with. It sounded fair. He couldn''t give his heart to her, anyway, so there would be no problem. This rtionship wasn''t about feelings. Though this was the case, he couldn''t deny the pang of disappointment. "The house will be yours when I leave. I will ensure that your niece and nephew are provided for and you receive clothes, money, food, and jewelry that you wish for. You may spend as much as you wish..." She nodded slowly, eyes downcast. "And when this doesn''t go ording to n?" He narrowed his eyes. "''If'' it doesn''t work, you may walk away, but this house and the money I give you will be yours to keep." She raised her eyebrows. "And if I wish to leave next week?" Good, she was clever. But he had drunk the water of a lot of rivers before this. "I will ruin your life for ripping me off," he told her bluntly. The warning was clear. She may not know who he was, but she knew how much money he had. "Then I must refuse. I do not wish to be on the losing end, either. Should we get this in writing?" she challenged. Heughed through his nose. "Oh? You want our illicit rtionship to have proof? Do you not fear what society will say?" She scoffed. "They already think me a loose woman with no morals. Being a mistress is better than sleeping with several men a day in the eyes of society." "You have a wicked mouth on you," heughed, both amused and impressed. "Fair enough. Do you have witnesses?" he challenged. "Yes," she smiled smugly. "I am close to Qing Yuan." Ah, so she was really cunning. By involving the woman Li Jie cared for, she had established the contract as infallible. He couldn''t hurt the girl his friend cared for because it would only cause a rift. "Your friend Qing Yuan will sign. Any other conditions?" "I will not reveal my face to you." He frowned. "Once you ept, your body and soul will be mine. I have the right to see your face." "Then we will not sign the contract. It is my bottom line. You must choose: mypany or the opportunity to see my face." She looked at his furious expression. "In return, I will not ask you any questions about your whereabouts or who you are." Because that was a privilege wives had, and she sure was no wife of his. He clenched his jaw. "Hao." He could live with that. As long as she didn''te prying in his business. He would just have to find a way to make her want to show him her face. The smile on her face was sweeter than sugar. He shook his head and guided her out of the room. Chapter 15: Not Appropriate Chapter 15: Not Appropriate The day after, they signed the contract. Li Jie is all praise for how smart Xin was and that her conditions were ster. Wang Yifeng supposed she was. She was also sinful and the coveted one. He couldn''t wait to be with her again. Last night he had called on the tailor and ordered him to measure her and make her clothing that would suit her new status. She was the Qinwang''s woman, after all. She didn''t stay though. She said that she had to take care of her niece and nephew and left. Wang Yifeng wanted routine. He wanted to have her all night, going to bed, waking up beside her and her being there whenever she needed him. He had thought out a n already. When he went back to the capital, he would keep her in a separate house, during the week he would live with her and on the weekends go to his wangfu for family dinner. He would probably have to lie a lot about why he wouldn''te back home, but he sure as hell wasn''t going to bring her to his wangfu as a consort. He didn''t know why, but he didn''t want to taint this rtionship with Xin by bringing her into unnecessary family politics. Li Jie envied him for a few minutes before he decided to buy a house for Qing Yuan. Wang Yifeng smiled as Xin signed the paper and asked Li Jie to do the same. There it was, their names on paper, in ck and white. "You may never leave me," he said, drawing her close to his body. Six months, he had given her six months to decide if she would leave, if she did, she would go with nothing, or when he left, she could keep it all. He nuzzled her cheek despite the groan from his friend. "Let''s celebrate," he said. Li Jie chuckled. Qing Yuan apanied them to drinks and they went their way at the end of the night. "Young Master, I wish to cook dinner for you," she offered when they reached the house. His eyes warmed. Dinner? He didn''t have much space in his stomach, but he was dying to taste her food. Didn''t they say that the way into a man''s heart was his stomach? He snapped out of the thought. There would be no hearts involved. He apanied her to the kitchen and watched as she busied herself inside, leaving the servants bewildered. He red at those that slipped and almost addressed him as prince and the servants quickly understood that it was better not to stay in front of the couple and incur qinwang''s wrath. She didn''t apany him in eating, simply settling to sit across from him and watching him eat his fill. "I need some time to take care of things at my old home." He was pleased. She already considered his humble ce her home. That was good. "Do you need any help?" he asked, sitting straight. "I will send some servants over." She shook her head. "There is not much apart from a few clothes, toys, and cleaning." "Then you shall be provided with a carriage for transportation." She raised her eyes, shocked. "Young Master, that is not appropriate." The eunuch, who was standing on the side felt the same way. "I don''t care about propriety. I wish to buy you a carriage." End of discussion. He ate a hearty meal and wondered how she learned to cook so well. It was truly a blessing that he had stumbled across her. That night he was unable to sleep in his bed. Anticipation bloomed in him as he imagined sharing his bed with her. He went to his study and found himself sleeping in the makeshift bed there. He slept well, waking up rested and refreshed to the smell of tea. It was routine and he liked it. He walked over to the main study and found the eunuch kneeling. "Rise," hemanded. The eunuch lifted his head and then stood up. Wang Yifeng prided himself over reading people and he had known his eunuch since young. He looked upset. "Tell me," he asked. "You may speak freely. " "There is news from the capital," the eunuch hesitates. "The consort..." "What of her?" he raised his brow. "The consort is very used to having everything given to her." He paused and carefully looked at the prince. "Has she settled in since I came here?" he asked nonchntly. "Yes, she has settled in ording to reports, but the servant girls she brought along have been causing trouble with the old momo. The servants of the wangfu are dissatisfied with the treatment. They feel like wangye has sent them to ve away under the new consort." "Has she taken over any of the household responsibilities?" The eunuch shook his head. "Don''t fret. I will write her a letter." It was his duty to act like he cared for Jia Lixue. "Is there anything else?" he asked. The eunuch shook his head. For now, Wang Yifeng would read. He could write the letterter on. Chapter 16: We Trust You Chapter 16: We Trust You "Miss, shouldn''t we inform the Master?" Mian Mian said, kneeling on the floor. "No need. This will not hamper our mission. The old tradesman will be taken care of in no time and we can move on to other missions without a hitch." Xin was busy packing the meager amount of clothing she had brought with her. Mian Mian and Bai had apanied her when she came from the capital to serve her and assist her in her missions. "Bai''er, do you have simr concerns?" The silent boy looked at his Young Miss and pressed his lips together. "Miss, I fear that it will be difficult to navigate around that house once we go in. I have checked the premises and the security is harsh. The young master you will live with has a colorful life and he himself enjoys capturing and killing people. If he finds out that you are in disguise, I fear he might act against you." Xin contemted for a moment. "I understand. I will make preparations so that we are not caught." In reality, she had followed him closely for the past few days and knew his routine by heart. His servants didn''t pay her much mind and treated her as if she was invisible, something she greatly appreciated. Moreover, their contract had stated that she coulde and go as she pleased, as long as he received meals andpanionship. If she nned thoroughly, she would not get caught. Also, she couldn''t help but feel thrilled to be sneaking around. She had grown bored of going on missions andpleting them without a hitch. Sometimes, she wanted a bit of fun in her life to spice things up. This man seemed reliable and brought her great pleasure. When he proposed that she be his mistress, she was stunned for a minute before she calcted. The mistress of a rich man was treasured. A courtesan could always be bought with money and be suspected of being a spy, but a mistress didn''t have the time or heart to do that sort of thing. She was dedicated to the man and spent her time trying to gain his attention. Wasn''t this the perfect alibi? And she even got to stay in a beautiful house and y with the handsome man. She could imagine that her young servants thought that she was indecent for being in a rtionship out of marriage andpromising their mission, but wouldn''t she be under scrutiny if she declined his proposal? He would pursue her and watch her every move. In her opinion, that was far more dangerous. By being with him, she could appease his doubts and work at peace. He would soon leave and there would be no ce to worry. She would move on and not think about him anymore. "What news of the old man?" Xin asked nonchntly. "The old boss of the merchant sect has been acting suspiciously, trying to import weapons from Han without the knowledge of the others. I suspect some greater force behind him," Mian Mian informed. "I suspect that the boss of the Youth Hall has a stake in this and will be working closely with the old boss." Xin squinted her eyes in suspicion. The Young Master Yifeng was equally suspicious, dropping from nowhere and acting close with Li Jie. Could he have a hand in this matter too? "Keep an eye on their movement and keep me informed. Don''t act rashly and attack them. We must scrutinize the situation properly." She knew that her father had his own ns in ce. Who he would side with during the struggle was yet to be known, so she had to keep her ear pressed to the wall and wait for hismand. She couldn''t go around acting up and making enemies. "Bai''er, a carriage wille tomorrow to take us away," Xin began. "Mian Mian, you and Bai''er will live in a separate courtyard while I apany the Young Master. You must act your age and call me aunt. I may have taught you the ropes of our profession, but working undercover is perilous. I know you realize the intensity and judge me for my decision, but I have my own thoughts and calctions." "Miss, we don''t need to know. We trust you." Mian Mian threw her brother a re. Bai''er remained stoic and nodded along. He had never been good at ttery and Xin liked him for that. He was straightforward and ideal to be a shadow guard. But the poor boy had been dragged with her to the south to spy for her as she made connections. It could be said that the boy was close to his twin sister and wanted to protect her. At such a young age, they had been orphaned and disillusioned about the world. Xin truly pitied them. They were merely ten-years-old and at an age where they should y and read, but they had been pushed to remain by her side, serve her and force themselves into life-threatening situations. The twins had been the children of her father''s subordinate. Their mother had long abandoned them. Their father was a superb resource. It was obvious that he had incurred the wrath of the enemy forces. Someone had hired mercenaries to kill the man, leaving these children alone. These two had been under Xin''s care at the time and she had exacted revenge on their behalf. She had hunted down the man who had killed their father and given him a gruesome death. Chapter 17: Pawns Chapter 17: Pawns That was all she could do for them. She couldn''t promise them a good life or peace, but she could ensure that they were a little more equipped to protect themselves. Wasn''t that how she had been brought up even though she was not an orphan? "Keep the weapons and documents here for now. You two can returnter and sneak them into the house." "Understood," they said in unison. "Mian Mian, please prepare the fire. I have to cook lunch." A small smile crossed her face. Mian Mian bowed and scurried away, leaving Bai''er in the room. "You maye to me if you have any concerns. I have never treated you poorly, and I will continue to take care of you. Treat me as an older sister and bare your soul to me." Bottling one''s concern in the heart was dangerous. Especially in their profession. It could lead to hesitation and muddled thoughts. They couldn''t afford either of it. "Thank you for your generosity, Miss." Xin gauged that he was unwilling to share his opinion. She sighed in her heart and waved her hand, letting him return to his duties. - - - His study was not overly crowded on a regr day. Apart from Eunuch Pei, only Li Jie and Boss Yi ever came to talk to him. On this eventful day, they plotted out the route of their new shipment. "If theye from the west of the city, the magistrate and judicial office will fall on the path. They have strict rules and inspect every carriage thates in," Li Jiemented as he pointed at the exact location. Putting a small pawn on the ce, he stroked his chin and thought of another way. "Have you considered that it is best to travel through that route? It will be least suspicious." Wang Yifeng looked at Boss Yi for his input. The older gentleman pursed his lips. "I believe wangye wants to use my connection with the judicial office to let the shipments pass without a hitch?" he asked, just to be sure. Wang Yifeng nodded. "I hear that the clerks are particrly nice to you and owe you quite a few debts. He sipped on the tea. He looked at it and then made a note to tell Eunuch Pei to stock up on this material. It was especially fragrant. "It will be difficult, Your Highness." Boss Yi fell silent when he was Wang Yifeng''s upromising gaze. Wang Yifeng had his fingers in a lot of things at the same time. His subordinates were spread across the country monitoring scams, robberies, frauds, and shipments. Even though he had a small crew, the wheels of the organization ran smoothly. He answered to no one and he didn''t need topromise. They just had to find a way to get him what he wanted. Be it taking care ofmissions, crooked officials, or dealers, he handled it all. Soon, a servant came knocking on the door. He called the servant in to find that Xin had arrived. A smile appeared on Wang Yifeng''s face and he quickly touched his color as if to fix his clothes. This was done subconsciously. "Wee her in," he said, cing the cup on the side of the table. Xin entered, looking as ethereal as ever. "Xin," he muttered. He looked away quickly, clearing his head of the sinful thoughts that passed his mind the moment he set his eyes on her seductive figure. "We will discuss thister," he told the other two. From the corner of his eyes, he could see Boss Yi stare at his woman. There was a slight burn in his chest that he did not understand. "Leave," he found himself saying. Li Jie smirked as he shook his head and bid adieu. Boss Yi, on the other hand, felt his jaw drop. He was the Qinwang after all, he had to follow hismands. He gave her a sideward nce as he left. Xin smiled under the veil, her eyes betraying nothing. ''Young Master Yifeng, it seems that our rtionship is indeed going to be interesting.'' She flicked her open hair and tucked it behind her ear. ''While you conspire with him, I am out for his blood. Whatever shall we do about this little conflict of interest?'' No matter, business was business and pleasure separate. "You look lovely, he said as he got up from his seat. His heart quivered at the thought of being inside her that night. She responded something softly that he couldn''t catch as she rounded around his desk. She pushed Wang Yifeng down to take his seat again and ced herself on hisp. He ced a bag on the table and then slid her palms up his arms. "Have you eaten lunch yet, Young Master?" Wang Yifeng shook his head, watching his hand move up her body. Over her thighs, across the fabric of her dress and up her t stomach. He saw the pearl hairpin he had given her and smiled. It made him feel like she has his. "Are you hungry?" His eyes found hers and he cupped her cheek in his palm. "Yes," he answered sincerely. He knew that his kitchen had prepared something for him and it woulde to him heated if he asked for it, but what was the fun in that? "But I do expect something more before lunch. I have another appetite." He leaned in and brushed his lip over the veil. "My little bird," he chuckled as she hummed. "Why do you call me that?" she asked, acting all spoiled. He shrugged. He had no idea and he didn''t care to exin. The name just fit her. "Do you want me to call you Xin, then?" Chapter 18: Bold of You * Chapter 18: Bold of You * [Warning: This chapter contains adult themes and sexual content. If you don''t wish to read it, please skip.] "I don''t mind if you call me anything. I am yours." He gulped when he heard that deration. So bold and befitting her. He hadn''t realized that women could garner such power. He hadn''t known that someone could hold such influence over him. Sensing his need to kiss her, she lifted her palms to his eyes and blinded him. Wang Yifeng was about to protest when he felt her soft lips against his. She deepened the kiss, pushing her tongue into his mouth and moaned quietly. It spurred him on. His hand started to undo her clothes. He didn''t try hard or undress herpletely, just to the point where he could get ess to her womanhood. The sounds she made on the contact of his fingers against her tender flesh made his member throb. ''What this woman does to me...'' "Tell me, my little bird, what did you cook for me?" He pushed aside the cloth covering her womanhood and massaged her pearl with his thumb while he slid two fingers inside of her. Her breathing hitched and her hand was gone from his eyes. He blinked looking at her stunned eyes and chuckled. Something had changed in him and he realized that suddenly. He was not looking for a quick release at the moment; he wanted to worship the woman in his arms, kiss her feet and pleasure her. Make her scream and watch her as she reaches climax. The feeling was unsettling. Men didn''t tie themselves to a woman willingly. They didn''t worship the women who pleasured them. They were the man''s for the taking. He wanted to tie her to him. "I can''t think when Young Master touches me," she whispered. ''What was this new technique to torture her? Make her recite all the dishes while he pleasures her?'' "Come on, you can do it. Aren''t you my clever little bird?" he taunted. She wanted to p the smile off his ce. The anger and pleasure came in continuity. She used her anger as fuel to clear her mind. "Steamed mandarin fish, crab rolls, fried ringing bell and bird''s nest soup," she tattled, her voice hoarse and soaked in pleasure. "Good job," he praised, curling her fingers into her, pressing into the sweet spot that made her throw her head back. "Can you teach this young master how to cook it?" Heughed at her reaction. "I can apany Young Master to the kitchen right now if he wants. Practice is better than theory." He removed his fingers from her and quickly licked his finger. She gasped and withdrew. How audacious. He truly had no qualms! "Let''s go then!" He waited for her to move from hisp, knowing that she would do no such thing. Her anger was that of a kitten scratching her owner and thinking it was a lion. He was pleasantly amused. He could see the anger and couldn''t help but tease her further. "Come now, put on your clothes. Don''t want lunch to be dyed further." She harrumphed and grabbed his hand. He raised a brow and watched as she shamelessly ced it on her skin and moved to pleasure herself. "That''s quite bold of you." She couldn''t read if he was pleased or angered. Xin looked deeply into his eyes and could see the lust. "Take half of a mandarin segment and slice it into quarters and set aside. The other half needs to be chopped and mixed with scallions and lime zest. You must set it aside after seasoning it with salt and pepper." She quirked her brow at him and continued. "Brush the fillet of the fish with sesame oil and mix salt and pepper. ce the pieces of mandarin segments on it with chili paste, depending on how hot you want it to be." She pushed her hip forward, demanding that he continue his previous ministrations. "In a steaming pot, pour the liquor, chicken broth, ginger, garlic, and soy sauce and bring it to a simmer. ce the fish in the steamed and cook through." "Get up," hemands, pletely seduced. How could she talk so calmly? What sorcery was this? "Hands on the desk," he said, breathing heavily. She obeyed, giggling and he gave her bottom a slight p. Because he wanted to. Her bottom was full and pretty, probably the most beautiful bottom in thend, but how would he know? This was the first one he had ever seen. "We can ask the kitchen for lunch," he mutters, pulling away his clothes. "But I need to be inside you first." He thought about it for a second. He had spilled his seed in her before and would do the same thereafter. They could have children together. He he hadn''t thought about it before. It would tie her to him. Chapter 19: Abate his Suspicions * Chapter 19: Abate his Suspicions * "No need, I will simply reheat the food for you," she moaned as he spread her wetness around, kissing her neck simultaneously. He sighed as he slipped into her warmth. "Fuck," he cursed as he gripped onto her hips and set a fast pace. "Continue to cook for me, okay?" She nodded as he pushed into her from behind. "And you will keep teaching me how to cook, no?" He smiled. She didn''t reply, but that was okay. Instead, she moaned every time his hips pped against her bottom. She met every thrust enthusiasm, making it all rougher. She tried her hardest to bite her lips and stop the words from slipping out of her mouth. She failed. She started rambling, about how he felt in her and that she would take everything he would give her. Turned out that this little bird liked to talk dirty. Indeed, women who were not from nobility were different. He loved it. He found himself intrigued. If she was aroused by such words, he wouldn''t hold back, either. He groaned as he asked the beautiful girl if she liked his member, if she liked it when he was rough with her like he knew she did. She tightened around him and cried out his name. He blinked. "Yifeng," she breathed with a litter of ''yes,'' ''more,'' and ''please.'' What a crazy woman. His name on her tongue scratched at his heart. It seemed like he had almost everything that he wished for. Maybe life as a Qinwang wouldn''t be so bad anymore. He looked down to see where his member disappeared into her and decided that he would see this rtionship until the end. Without warning, the pleasure built up inside of him. He exploded inside her. At the same moment, he heard Xin choke on her breath and climax. Groaning heavily, he kept his softening member still inside her, thrusting it gently in and out, making sure that she was in no difort. The pace wasnguid, dropping his forehead to her shoulder. "Thank you," he said as he kissed her naked shoulder. She shivered. They stop moving and they justy in each others embrace doing nothing, pletely spent. Time passed quickly as they tried to catch their breath. She quickly put on her clothes before moving to him and helping him dress. He looked at her with a weird expression. "How do you know how to dress a man?" he asked. "Ie from a poor family. We did not have servants and I often helped my brother dress." That should abate his suspicions. "You have had no man before me?" "As dishonest as it may sound, I gave my virtue to you." The certainty in her eyes convinced him. He didn''t ask further. Instead, he told her that it was the same for him. She didn''t reply. Did he think lying to her would make her like him more? Didn''t they already pledge to have none of that? He can see that she doesn''t believe him as Xin shakes her head, amused. It was a lot better than her anger. She walked around the desk and took her seat opposite to him. The bag which had been ced on the table suddenly gained their attention. Now that he had gotten what he first wanted, he could finally feel his hunger. She really did bring lunch with her. "Young Master should clean himself up. I will apany you to eat." He epts and calls for the servants. They wash his hands and he digs into the food. Every dish is as delicate and vourful as thest. "Where did you learn how to cook?" This was the taste of food cooked for nobility and not like themoners usually consumed. She chuckles as she pours more food into his bowl. "I met a servant from a noble family once. She had retired and lived in ourmunity. I learned how to cook from her." That sounded convincing enough. He nodded his head and continued to eat. - - - A carriage was sent to the humble house of Xin and his niece and nephew. A group of servants help them put all their belongings inside while they are made to sit in the beautifully adorned carriage. "Miss, this Young Master is good to us," Mian Mian says as they make their way to their new house. "He has arranged such a luxurious ride for us." "Our Miss is from a good family, not losing to the status of the young master, you don''t need to be so awed by the treatment." Bai''er looked out of the window, keeping an eye on the servants, ever the vignt one. Word has it that the Qinwang hade to Lijing. Though his name was unknown to many, she could guess that this Young Master was the prince. Good thing she had not shown her face. One never knows when they crossroads in this tiny world. She was not equal in status. Even the crown prince couldn''tpare to the power and status of the current Qinwang who was favored by the previous emperor. "Bai''er is correct. He may be from an affluent family, but we should remain alert. He is not a simple man and it will only take one mistake for him to realize who we are. There is no space to slip," she warned. "I understand, Miss," little Mian Mian pouted. "When you reach the house, act your age. Don''t linger too close to him and speak as little as possible to him." This was directed at Mian Mian. She didn''t worry about Bai''er, who rarely spoke to others. Chapter 20: Greedy for More Chapter 20: Greedy for More As they entered the house, the eunuch who served at Wang Yifeng''s side greeted them. It was a great honor to be acknowledged by him and Xin found herself smiling. These tricks would work on others, but not on her. She still admired the act. He was trying to act virtuously even though he was taking a mistress? Okay, she would let him act the part. "Miss, please follow me. I shall show you to your courtyard." Xin nodded and grabbed Mian Mian and Bai''er by their hands and walked them in. Surprisingly, Wang Yifeng was waiting for her there. He was looking around the ce, inspecting to see if it was fit for her. "You''vee," he said. "The young ones can live here. The sun shines brightly in this courtyard and they can y as they wish. There is a small kitchen for you, but you don''t need to worry, the kitchen will provide you with food." He looked at the little figures hiding behind Xin. "Introduce yourselves," Xin coaxed the children. The little girl peeked out from behind her and stared, wide-eyed at the handsome man. He had ink-ck hair and piercing eyes. His stature was tall and muscr and couldn''t be hidden under his clothes. His features were chiseled and striking, showing his maturity and power. Mian Mian clutched onto her Miss'' clothes and tugged. Xin looked back and saw the little girl look at her with wonder in her eyes. ''This little girl, acting like she has never seen a man,'' she thought, amused. ''Was he that handsome?'' She couldn''t help but give his face a look. Indeed, he was good looking, his body exuded cold, cruelty, and distance. He seemed unreachable and his features struck admiration in others. ording to the books of physiognomy, he would be an excellent man in all aspects. "Mian Mian. Ten-years-old," she said, so unlike her. Wang Yifeng smiled, ttered by the shyness of the little girl. "Bai." He raised a brow. Wang Yifeng was amused by the shortness of this young man''s introduction. Clearly he was displeased by his aunt''s decision. Such a young boy, yet he still wanted to protect his family. "Twins?" he asked Xin. She hummed in response. "They may look alike, but their personalities are divided by the ocean." The adoration in her eyes for these two was obvious. Wang Yifeng quickly realized that the way to remain relevant in her life was to treat these children well. It had been his intention from the beginning, but now he was absolutely sure. That night, Wang Yifeng entered the courtyard and was met with a full house. The waft of delicious food entered his nose and he quickened his pace. He heard the sound ofughing children and the cursesing from Li Jie. Li Jie was surprisingly good with children, ying with Mian Mian. He even tried to include the silent and brooding Bai''er into the conversation. Stealthily, he made his way to the kitchen and remained hidden. He watched as she moved around the fire, the sound of tes, pans, and sses clinking and ttering filled the air. Surprisingly Qing Yuan apanied Xin in the kitchen and two boys who looked barely five ran around the small space. They had to be Li Jie''s children with Qing Yuan. Though he had never met them, he had heard of them asionally. On closer look, one of the boys looked five and the other three. "Seeing how cute these children are, makes you want to have some of your own, doesn''t it?" He heard Qing Yuan say. Wang Yifeng''s ears perked up. "You already have two children to take care of, why are you greedy for more?" Xinughed. "God knows these two are a handful but Li Jie loves children. He wouldn''t mind a few more." Qing Yuan seemed like a nice woman, he guessed. She had been by Li Jie''s side for six years and had followed him through all hardships. Wang Yifeng anticipated the day Li Jie would be allowed to bring the woman to his home as more than the mother of his illegitimate children. Something crashed onto the floor and Xin shouted, startling him. "Stop running! I almost knocked you two over." She shakes her head, her hand on her hips. Wang Yifeng looked at her with intrigue. She asked feisty in front of him, but he had never seen this motherly side of her. "Dinner is almost ready. You should go wash up before the Young Master arrives." Wang Yifeng chuckled under his breath. The two children apologized and ran past him and paid him no mind. He gave up on eavesdropping and entered the kitchen. The sight in front of him was beautiful. Xin was bent over, reaching for something she had kept on the floor. "My, my. Look who walked in!" Li Jie shouted from the courtyard. Qing Yuan and Xin swiveled around. Whereas Qing Yuan looked nervous, Xin had nothing but a pleased smile in her eyes. "Young Master, it is not appropriate for you to enter the kitchen," Xin scolded him gently. He allowed her to reprimand him in this manner. He pushed her out by the shoulder, making himugh gutturally. The tables were set and everyone sat without order. Chapter 21: A Way to Make Connections Chapter 21: A Way to Make Connections Xin acted as the humble host, cing the dishes in front of everyone and making sure they had enough of what they wanted. She had a curious talent: she could sense when someone wanted something. Before they could ask, she would move across and ce more in their bowl. The gods were kind to him. Xin could cook better than the chefs at his wangfu in the capital. The plethora of dishes she had cooked ranged from vegetarian dishes to non-vegetarian, lentils, and sweets. Moreover, the spices she used were especially proportioned by her. A secret recipe, she had said. For such a small woman, she had a lot of energy. Didn''t this just show that she was a caring person? Wang Yifeng had Xin on one side, Mian Mian and Bai''er following and on his left side was Li Jie. He looked around. This was how it was supposed to be. Li Jun, the younger of Li Jie''s children, spoke up. "Can I go y now?" he asked. Despite being a mischievous child, it was clear that he was a filial one. He showed great respect, but no shyness. It was the same with Xin. The two children seemed to know and adore her. They even called her aunt. Mian Mian, on the other hand, was a talkative little girl. Since Wang Yifeng entered, he hadn''t spoken to her much, but she had been grinning and talkative. "Not yet," Qing Yuan shook her head. "You have barely eaten a mouthful. Eat more. You too, Li Jing." The two boys grumbled. "They are indeed too thin," Xinmented, adding some pieces of meat in their bowls. "Come over often. Your mother mustn''t feed you enough." In Wang Yifeng''s eyes, she was a mother. Xin had been taking care of Mian Mian and Bai''er for a while and had been the sole bread-winner. With her meager pay, she had managed to raise them into beautiful children. "Don''t tease me, Xin. I try to feed them. If only they were not so picky," Qing Yuan frowned. "Possibly because you are a terrible cook," Li Jiemented offhandedly, earning a piercing look. Wang Yifeng shook his head, wondering how this stupid friend of his had allowed a woman to have such an effect on him. Li Jie had a soft side. He had taken in a lot of girls who had been in dire straits, including Xin. But he wasn''t too stupid. He helped people, but in turn, they remained indebted to him throughout their life, ready to be summoned by him at any time. "You pretend to know everything, but you didn''t even know that Xin was struggling," Qing Yuan said scathingly. Li Jie looked at her helplessly. "If I had known I would have given you a raise or at least made sure that you had a better life." Wang Yifeng found himself nodding along. However, Xin was shaking her head. She gave a dismissive wave. "It wasn''t that bad. We had enough food and clothing to survive." Wang Yifeng rested his head on her palm and looked at her carefully. "Everything is better now," she said, throwing him a quick smile. He returned it in kind. "I am happy here," she proimed suddenly. "I can cook for everyone now. "Yifeng, I will being over often, then." Li Jie''s joke fell t. Wang Yifeng did not reply. The meaning was evident. Li Jie was not wee. - - - "Miss, I can do it myself," Mian Mian protested. Xin softly brushed the girl''s hair. "Hush. They are listening," she warned. Mian Mian became silent. She looked at her brother helplessly. Bai''er nced at the Miss and sighed. Coming to this house had really restricted their functions. Since morning, they had done nothing but watch the other children and adults eat andugh. Bai''er could only stand on the side and watch as his sister gave a convincing performance in front of all those people. "Miss, they have left," Bai''er announced after an hour. Xin stood up and peered out of the window just to make sure. Satisfied, she came back and started to give them information. "I have gone through the book from the gambling house. You did good work, Bai''er." She gave him a small smile. They do indeed deal with women. They are transporting women from Zhou to Chen. The women are being sold off as ves and the money whitewashed. The daughter of a prominent official in western Zhou went missing a couple of months ago and wasn''t seen. The family appointed private detectives but nothing came up. It was not until recently that she had found out that the same official had sold off his daughter through this gambling house. She was taken to Chen and greeted into the harem as a concubine. What a great way to make connections. Chapter 22: Provocative Words Chapter 22: Provocative Words But the problem was, the official had crossed Xin''s father, incurring his wrath. The more they dug in, the worse the situation seemed. One of her subordinates had entered the gambling house, pretending to be a girl in need of work. She was promised a position as a servant in a prominent family but never seen after her report. They didn''t assume the worst in the beginning, but then when they followed the trail, the gruesome truth was revealed. Xin was not righteous, far from it. But she hated when someone she had molded with her own hands was taken away from her. She had spent years on these young girls, and she simply vanished. She had written a letter to her father about the matter. The old man had advised her to look into the gambling house and find evidence. Not to act too rashly and only take steps that were necessary. She had to make a scene so that the authorities started to look into the ce, nothing more. Tonight was the night she would do it. "I will leave in the middle of the night. Tonight is the new moon, no one darese out than those addicts. Bai''er, youe with me." Bai''er nodded. "Mian Mian, find out the gossip in this house. Who is in power? Who is our enemy? And most importantly, who is this Young Master? I want you to find out." Her cheery personality helped her blend in with the crowd and talk to people easily. While Bai''er was good at sneaking in material information, Mian Mian was better at talking to people and induce them to tell her all their secrets. She left after giving them explicit information. When she entered Wang Yifeng''s room, he was reading a book. He didn''t look up even though he knew she hade. "Did you tuck the children in?" His tone was doting. She looked at him as she sat at the edge of the bed. She didn''t reply immediately, so he looked up, interested. "Is there something you want to tell me?" "Mian Mian is not used to the courtyard. After I service you, may I return to the courtyard to apany her?" she asked, looking meak. "Acting pitiful doesn''t suit you. Demand as you will," he said lightly. "Prepare me for bed before you leave, that is all I ask of you." He was disappointed that their first night living together couldn''t be spent in each others'' arms, but he understood that she had responsibilities. She helped him with his clothes, slowly stroking his arms and skin as she did so, teasing him even though she couldn''t finish what she started. She smiled in her heart, feeling his muscles flutter where she touched him. Lastly, she untied his hair and let it cascade down his back. She used her fingers tob through it, making sure all the knots were gone, before she set them on his shoulder. "Young Master, let me take you to bed." "Such provocative words. Do not utter them if you can''t fulfill," he told her without much thought or anger. He pretended to fall asleep and held her hand while he did so. When sleep slowly dragged him down, he felt her retreat her hand from his and leave without a word. - - - The woman wrapped herself in men''s clothing, a long ck garment. She arrived in town at midnight. She walked down the middle of the wide road, her pace neither fast nor slow. Her steel toed-boots followed one another, a metronome in motion. She carried herself without concern, her shoulders square and jaws set. Her hair was neatly tied back in a men''s style. The darkness of the surroundings cast a shadow on her pale skin. Her deep-set eyes reflected nothing but darkness. They appeared to be devoid of color, the pupils and irises one ck mass. When she arrived at the crossroads, she did not hesitate. She took the road that forked to the left, knowing the way to where she was headed. She paused as a guard approached on a horse. She moved to the side, giving way. She looked straight ahead and lifted her head high to ward off any unwanted attention. The horse slowed, the torch in the guard''s hand swept in her direction, illuminating her pale face. She looked at the guard, a middle-aged man with dark hair and a mustache that suited him. He wore a uniform and carried a token that identified him. The guard nodded at her, and she nodded back, knowing that the man harbored no ill-will or suspicion. The woman allowed the guard to go his way. She could see the lights of the gambling house in the distance, its harsh light turning everything around it yellow. When she arrived at the edge of the building, she stopped, noticing that the street was devoid of any humans. She walked in without hesitation. "How can I help you?" The young man at the counter wore casual clothing. He looked about her age and quite handsome. She said nothing. She smelled burnt food and cheap perfume. She had to cause a scene and this silence didn''t bode well for her mission. She turned and closed the wooden doors of the gambling house, making sure to lock it. Chapter 23: Start a New Life Chapter 23: Start a New Life "What do you think you are doing?" The young man behind the counter was about to shout for help, but she was already at his side. She calmly ced a hand on his mouth and pushed a knife to his throat. The young man tried to move away to no avail. "Where is the Boss?" She raised her brow at the clerk. The young man looked confused, probably too frightened to think clearly, she realized. She put a hand on his shoulder and squeezed until she heard the crunch of bones. The young man''s expression changed into one of pain and he screamed into her hand. She let him go and saw him crumple to the ground. "Where is the Boss?" She spoke slowly, knowing that the young man was traumatized. "He is not in. He usuallyes in on Saturday when most of the customerse," he cried. She could tell that he was being truthful. "Bai''er, search the premise." She returned her gaze to the young man whoy squirming on the ground. She bared her teeth and reached for the young man, who had backed himself into a corner. She gripped his neck with one hand, lifting him from the ground. She pulled him close and used her armed hand to sink the knife into his throat. The blood geisered, running down her hands and dripping off her sleeve. She dug in deeper, her eyes glittering. She was so focused that she didn''t notice that little Bai was back. It was as if the world didn''t exist, as if it was only her and the blood; everything else was trivial. She savored the moment. Slowly, she came down from her high and began to feel light. She retreated the knife from the young man''s throat and let him drop to the floor with a thump. "Miss, why did you kill him?" Bai''er asked. "He was the one who took advantage of your sister Sisi." She didn''t know why she had to exin. She could have just done it because she was bored. And what better way than to expose the ce by wreaking havoc? They couldn''t take care of such a mess. Outside, they heard banging on the door. Someone wanted toe in. She looked at Bai''er and let him lead the way. They traversed through the throng of people congregated in the hidden rooms and made their way to where they knew the girls would be kept. She took care to unbind every girl, there were five of them, and reassured them that they coulde out when the guards arrived. "You will be free to go back to where you came from or start a new life." Were her final words. She didn''t care much for how they survived after the ordeal. She just knew that the gambling house would be exposed and probed into until the whole truth came out. Bai''er lingered around the gambling house for hours until the people from the department of justice came. He saw through the whole matter as he could need to report back to the Miss. Xin, on the other hand, walked back to the house. She didn''t change her clothes, choosing to watch him in his courtyard. Having awokente at night, he sat under the shade and sleeplessly sighed. There was a rawness to the way he made his way as if the world was at his feet and he could gain anything that hey his eyes on. His hair cascaded down his back as he sat there, but the summer heat must have got to him. He wretched his hair into a pile and put it up in a loose bun, knowing no one was watching. He still wore the clothes she had helped him change into, only his chest was bare and visible in the lights of thentern littering his courtyard. There were no guards near his courtyard, which was odd, considering he seemed to be someone of importance. Maybe he liked the sce. She watched silently, for the first time, noticing the scars marking his arms. His sleeves had been pulled back to his shoulder as he fanned his face. This posture really piqued her curiosity. He put the small cup to his lips, taking a small sip and then pressing his lips together in dissatisfaction. He stood up suddenly, moving towards the back of the courtyard which was open to the woods behind. He caressed the cup in his hands and leaned on his elbows on the railing. It was a good thing that she was watching him from the darkness of the words. She didn''t know how long it had been and his actions were both frustrating and enrapturing. Yifeng, the name rolled off her tongue. She listened as the sound floated away, the whisper finally swallowed by the woods surrounding her. She thought of her own name a name she had not uttered in years. She had long ago given up on the need for names, what were they but identities? And people like her, they had no identities. She asionally used one to get information, but never her real one. She had spent years wandering the nation''s roads, going on with her missions, and following every whim of her mastermind father. She would only live in one ce for weeks at a time before moving on. She hade to think of the world as her yground, a vast space she could roam and be happy in. This had been installed in her since her childhood and she had no choice but to follow this teaching religiously. The need for a name only arose when she needed to charm people for her mission. But she would leave as soon as she had taken what she needed. But this. This man. Young Master Yifeng, he had thrown her for a loop. Chapter 24: Completely Own a Man Chapter 24: Completely Own a Man In front of the two children, she couldn''t admit to the contradiction of her decision. She knew that it was dangerous staying there. She needed her freedom and she needed to remain hidden, alone. She might have been powerful, but there were people more powerful than her, who had control over her every move. To survive in the bloodthirsty world, she had to remain alone. Inadvertently, trouble would arise and over the years she had be an expert at avoiding them, her foresight and analytical skills helped her stay one step ahead. Her father ruled the Eye of God with a tight fist. There were only two rules: his word wasw and there had to be absolute secrecy. At the end of the day, all the other rules were only to ensure that those two were never flouted. Their coven was forbidden from revealing themselves to others, purposely or identally. Though she didn''t follow all the rules, she was clear about the most important two. She had be quite good at covering her tracks, otherwise, she was extremely careful. But sometimes, just sometimes, some people had to be ughtered. Her job required her to adopt different identities, to blend in arge city where she might stay for months. She had not had a home for a long time, and the thought ofing home to someone waiting for her it stirred something dark hidden inside her. No, she didn''t need to tell him any other name. This new one suited her well. It was the sound of the first drop of rain hitting the ceiling and the flutter of wind chimes. It suited her character. Staying for too long would make her careless, and that got one killed. Yes, she was curious about him and the pleasure she felt every time shey her eyes on him, but she could only distance herself from him. She couldn''t read him, and that made him more charming. And dangerous. But it was not just curiosity. His presence was overpowering; never before had someone been able to control her. Never before had she wanted topletely own a man. She swore he looked directly towards her. Though impossible, it seemed to be true. The corner of his lips lifted up slightly and he spoke to himself. She tried to read his lips, but it was too far away. He took another sip from the cup as he scowled. With that, he walked back towards the front of the courtyard. With a startle, she realized that he was heading out of the courtyard. Suspicious and thoroughly sure that he was heading to the small courtyard he had assigned for her, she fled. Within minutes, she had reached, almost short of breath and flinging her clothes off and pushing them under the bed. She slowly dressed and was about to slide into the bed when his soft voice came from outside the room. "Xin''er?" Her eyes softened just a little and she felt a smile pull on her lips despite the rush. She looked down on her disheveled form and sighed. She would just have to pretend that she was tossing on the bed, unable to sleep just like him. She padded forward, looking back and seeing Mian Mian sleeping peacefully. She slowly opened the door. His hands were curled, his fingers ready to knock again. He looked at her deeply, his eyes clear. "When did you wake up, Young Master?" she whispered, looking him over as if she was seeing him after a long time. "It hasn''t been long. Has the little one fallen asleep yet?" he asked, peering over her shoulder. "Ah, yes. She fell asleep very quickly," she chuckled. "Do you require the same treatment, young master?" She gave him a coy smile. "Come. Staying up sote is not good for your health." He didn''t reply to her little dig. He extended his palm to her, waiting for her toe to him. She looked back to the little girl and then back to him. She slid her palm into his and followed him back. Their pace wasnguid and she soon found herself walking by his side and not behind him. His fingersced through hers and they swung it gently. She felt someone follow them and stiffened for a moment. Perking up her ears, she looked at him from the corner of her eyes. "Young Master didn''te alone to meet me?" she asked quietly. He looked at her with aplicated look. ''She noticed,'' he thought, and thenughed through his nose. "What are you exactly, little bird?" he asked, gripping her hand tighter. "Just that, a little bird with good instincts. When you are small and vulnerable you need to take advantage of your gut feeling." "Gut feeling," he murmured. "Interesting." "Is Young Master angry because I pointed it out?" she asked, sounding disappointed. For a second, she thought in retrospect, had she revealed too much of her abilities? In this day and age, especially for a woman from the pleasure house, it was only safe to be aware of the surroundings. Ladies of pleasure were far more cunning and talented than they appeared and this man was not naive enough to underestimate them. "No, it merely surprised me." He paused. "It pleases me to know that you can protect yourself." He looked straight at her. When he left, she would have to go back to the pleasure house, dancing to the tunes of men. She would need these talents to survive. "I am merely observant. It doesn''t mean I can protect myself," she admitted. She felt his grip tighten further. She looked at their joint hand with a shrewd look. "Young Master, my hands are sweating. Please let me go." Her voice was soft but evident. Chapter 25: Identity Of The Man Chapter 25: Identity Of The Man This grip of his would hurt a fragile woman, and it was only fair that she subtly reminded him. He pretended not to know what she meant. "I don''t mind it," he said. "It is a hot night. Maybe we should ask the kitchen to prepare some cooling soup." ''Oh, yes. Just pester the servants because you can''t sleep. Such entitlement!'' sheughed internally. "It''ste, consuming cold foods at night will cause indigestion." He guffawed at her words. "How can you be so crass and cute at the same time?" It was a rhetorical question, but she couldn''t help but get thest word. "There is nothing crass about our body and its functions. I am concerned about Young Master''s health, I had no other intentions." "Your words be fiery when you are angry," hemented out of the blue. Angry? Did that what he think she felt at the moment? She was mildly inconvenienced, but nothing like anger. "You may leave," he proimed in a loud voice. At first, she was confused at what he meant, but a secondter she realized that he had dismissed the guard. Her stomach churned. She had been a little ufortable with someone following her as it was her job to evade. But this dismissal could only mean two things: either he trusted her, or he knew that he could kill her without blinking his eye. A twisted part of her wanted to know which it was. Either way, it would be interesting. "Are you happy?" he asked after a while. "Mm." They didn''t speak for the rest of the walk. When they entered the courtyard, he took her to the room and ced her on the bed. There was no urgency or arousal in his touch, just the need for someone to hold to at night. She saw her need to be loved reflected in him. When she was younger, she had craved the love of her parents and their embrace. He was from a noble family, and rtions were never strong among those people. There were always deception and conspiracies. Every man was alone in their family, fending for themselves, climbing to the top while pulling others down. He mustn''t have been any different. She stroked his head like she would a child, forting him and humming a tune she had heard in some other city. She didn''t remember which. He stared at her for a minute before fluttering his eyes close, pulling her closer and pressing his head into the crook of her neck. He fell asleep with her in his arms, the plethora of plots running through his mind. Slowly they disappeared and he fell back into a restful sleep. Her humming stopped, as did her fingers running through his hair. - - - Wang Yifeng awoke in the wee hours of the morning. He yawned intelligently, before remembering that there was a woman beside him. He stiffened and looked down to where she was supposed to be. The fragrance of her skin still lingered in the sheets, it had soaked into the linen and surrounded him throughout the night. He didn''t know what it was, but something about her calmed him downst night. It was one of the best nights of sleep he had in a long time. No dreams pervaded his sleep, neither did he restlessly awaken at night. He was almost horrified for curling up around her all night despite the heat. She must have been ufortable, but as far as he knew, she didn''t push him away. He would have known. Just like when she had left, he had awakened instantly and nkly stared at the ceiling wondering what had happened to him. A strange sensation gripped the hand she had held as he went off to sleep. Blinking away his thoughts, he stretched and rose from the bed. Her side of the bed looked untouched, while his was crumpled, a clear sign that he had been on that side seconds ago. He gently thought that she must be a still sleeper, not moving around. He smiled and called in the eunuch to help him into more formal clothing. On the other side of the house, in the courtyard she shared with Mian Mian and Bai''er, the kids gave their daily report. "The Young Master is from the capital and highly ced at that," Mian Mian began as Xin undid her hair and ran her hand through it to get rid of the knots. She had rested her head on his arms and the friction had roughened patches of hair. She winced as she pulled at a tangled strand of hair. "Continue," she murmured as she reached for the wide-toothedb on the dresser. "I have tasted the food prepared for the young master. Even though he seems to enjoy the food the Miss cooks, he has brought his personal chef with him from the Capital. His skills are not poor, and from what I gathered, the old cook worked in the imperial pce before. The Young Master''s identity must not be small." She paused and stole a nce at Xin. "The servants all respect him immensely, and there seems to be an underlying fear in their eyes. The house is in impable order and the man at the Young Master''s side keeps tight control over each and every servant." "I had to be very careful while I walked around. There seem to be eyes on every wall and the servants are hard to approach." Xin raised her eye. Mian Mian had an innate charm which made people want to talk to her. For these servants to be so tight-lipped, she could imagine the punishment that was handed out for flouting rules. Chapter 26: Interesting Creature Chapter 26: Interesting Creature She had seen Yifeng''s right-hand man. He was an interesting creature. While Wang Yifeng was open with his emotions, at least in front of her, that man always wore a nk expression on his face. He looked like a seasoned servant who had served for too long and seen too much bloodshed. His body moved with grace unlike that seen in themon noble''s servant. It piqued her interest, but she was slightly afraid of guessing the true identity of this man. "What else did you find out?" "The Young Master has a newlywed concubine at home. He had not even been married for a month when he came here. The servants were perplexed why he chose to marry amoner''s daughter but said that the couple''s rtionship was harmonious and that they are very much in love." "For someone who thinks they didn''t do a good job, you brought on quite a bit of information!" she chuckled. "Miss, there is more. They spoke ill of you, especially one servant girl who badmouthed both you and the concubine at the main house," Mian Mian said. She felt almost guilty for bringing up the information. But it was her duty to inform the Miss of all conversations she had participated in and overheard. She would becking in her job if she didn''t equip her Miss with all the information. What if these servants need to be won over in the future or turned into enemies, instead? One had to be careful and analyze every situation. Unfortunately, even though she was good at conversing, she wasn''t good at foreseeing what was toe. She left that to her quick-witted and cunning Miss. "Make a note of her and keep your eye on her. No need to inform me about her whereabouts until she does something suspicious or harmful." She looked at the little girl and couldn''t help but smile. "What? Did what she said offend you?" Mian Mian nodded. "She called Miss terrible names and questioned your integrity." Though furious, Mian Mian was not the kind to burst out into mes. "There will be people with filthy mouths. But remember, it is these loud-mouthed people who are all bark and no bite. Beware of the snake hidden under the flower. Once you go in to sniff the fragrance, they will slither out and bite you." "Mian Mian understands." She nodded eagerly, making note of this. "Bai''er, what is the news on the gambling house?" she sounded bored. She had done her part, now she only needed to see the scene unfold. "The people from the justice department and the guard who you met on the street got news shortly after your departure. They rushed in and found his body on the floor. There were some women who had ventured out and sought out the clerk. There were screams and the like. But overall, nothing much happened." He paused for effect. "The magistrate came in the morning and looked through the house for clues. Finding the women in the back was damning information, so the people who had been detained under the suspicion of the murder were taken into custody for questioning. Most of them were drunk or losing money, but they had some interesting characters in there." Xin raised her brow in interest. "They found the transaction books and the discrepancies and information on moneyundering. But I am afraid that there will be no action taken. The boss of the gambling house left unscathed and the magistrate brushed the whole matter under the rug." Xin scrunched her brow in frustration. "Who is it that interrupted?" "It seems that the owner of the gambling house has some connection to the magistrate. I haven''t exactly figured out how so, but if Miss asks, I will keep tabs on them." She nodded. She had finally untangled her hair. "They found the women and took them into custody," Bai''er said after a long silence. "They will probably be sent back home after this." She scoffed. What family would take back a girl who was kidnapped? It was unheard of in this society where daughters were seen as burden and wives and concubines the vessels that bore children and had no rights and opinions of their own. "You don''t need to be concerned about them. It''s no headache of ours." He hummed in ent but she knew that he was conflicted. She stopped herself from sighing. He was still a child and had to learn that helping everyone you came across or pitied wasn''t a good thing. People were evil and they only used others to their advantage. Once they got what they wanted, they wouldn''t mind selling away their benefactors for some small benefits to their enemies. It seemed that Bai''er would have to learn the hard way. It was a pity. "Come, help me in the kitchen, Bai''er." She strolled out of the room, across the courtyard, and into the kitchen. The little man followed silently watching her light the fire. "Blow on it until it is bigger." She started to prepare the vegetables in a neat and quick fashion. If anyone saw her now, it would give away her prowess with the de. Within a minute, the oil was hot and she had poured the vegetables in. She stirred and added the sauces she had prepared beforehand, adding spice and sour. It was her unique recipe to a simple vegetable stir fry. Apart from her fellow organization members, no one had tasted it. It was a quick meal that cost little and took little time to cook. Chapter 27: Pined For The Man Chapter 27: Pined For The Man When on a mission, they were tight on money, sometimes skipping meals so that they could afford to bribe officials if need be. In the martial world where corruption peeked through every alley, how could a spy survive? She was the Miss of a wealthy family, but that didn''t mean that she got any benefits. Actually, harsher treatment was given to her. A delicious array of dishes were cooked, light and filling, not too hard on the digestive system: perfect for Yifeng to have in the morning. She decorated the bowls to look pleasing to the eye and went over to Wang Yifeng''s courtyard. The servant girls looked up when she came in, looking her up and down as they cleaned. Xin ignored them and stopped in front of servant Pei. "Miss, good morning. Do you wish to meet the Young Master?" he asked, bowing in greeting. She nodded. "I brought him breakfast. I hope the kitchen hasn''t prepared anything yet." "The kitchen staff know now that you are taking care of Young Master''s nutrition. They don''t dare disobey," he smiled. The politeness showed integrity and cunning. "Thank you. I will enter now." Eunuch Pei nodded and moved aside to make way for her to enter the room. Wang Yifeng looked up when he saw her enter with a tray. "Why don''t you ask one of the servants to bring the food over? It is not necessary for you to walk such long distances with a heavy tray," he whined. ''Is he trying to act cute and concerned?'' she thought, almost wanting to roll her eyes. "If Young Master doesn''t want the preferential treatment, he can tell me. I will send the servants over to bring the food instead." She just had to tease him. "I didn''t mean it that way, Xin''er. You should just leisurely stroll around and not do such heavy work. That is the duty of the servants." "I like taking care of Young Master. I am just a poormoner, who isn''t used to having people help her. I would feel inconvenienced if someone was watching over me all the time." It would be very inconvenient if someone shadowed her all the time and overheard her conversations with Mian Mian and Bai''er. Instead, she was happy that she had been taken in as a mistress, a disgrace that the servants would rather not cross or help in any manner. She had to give it to Wang Yifeng. Even though he acted like he treated her like a wife, he had given her a small courtyard in his grand house, showing that her status was nothing more than a mistress. Though the servants didn''t mistreat her, it was evident that they did not have to courtesy her or pay her respect. It was in their best interest to ignore her existence and pretend that their Young Master was a dedicated, virtuous, and loyal individual who had no shred of lust in him. "I understand, my little bird. Nowe, have some food with me." He smirked. He had yet to see her eat and sometimes wondered if she ever did. She spent most of her time taking care of his needs or the kids, having little time to herself. He was worried a little, especially because she was so thin. He would have liked it if she was a little healthier. She sat in front of him, tranquility in her eyes. She didn''t move, neither did she look at the food. After a minute of coaxing, he gave up and started to feed himself. A female servant brought a bowl of water for him to wash his hand. He didn''t even care to look at her or thank her. He solely focused on Xin. Xin raised her brow, feeling amused. She nced at the servant, probably seventeen or eighteen in age, and quite pleasing to the eye. The servant was giving her the side-eye, thinking she was inconspicuous. "What''s your name, little girl?" she spoke out, startling both the servant and Wang Yifeng. He looked at her with aplicated look but said nothing. "Li Na, Miss." She dug her head into her chest and answered. There was an air of indignation in her, but it was subtle and hard to understand if one didn''t have an eye for such things. "How long have you worked for the Young Master?" she asked in a soft voice. She had to pretend to be a nice and kind person in front of Yifeng at all costs. No shred of jealousy or panic in her voice. "My mother was a servant of Young Master''s and I started working when I was young." No mention of her being a servant. She used the word ''work.'' A clear sign that she thought that she was not a mere servant and had some chance with the Young Master. Xin''s arrival had probably brought some hope into the hearts of servant girls who had pined for the man from a young age. "I see. You are a good girl. Come over to my courtyard sometime, maybe I can use your help carrying the food." Xin hid the slyness in her voice. Li Na looked at Xin in horror. "You don''t want to?" Xin asked, not showing any expression. "Don''t worry, you will not be my servant. Only carry the food for every meal." Li Na sighed in relief at that. Wang Yifeng was looking at Xin, trying to understand what this woman was trying to do. Couldn''t she see that he was avoiding this servant girl? This Li Na, or whatever her name was, had tried her best to stumble across him and make her presence known for a while. Chapter 28: Heavenly Woman Chapter 28: Heavenly Woman Eunuch Pei, who had full control over the servants was at a loss at the girl''s persistence. It was not a big issue as Wang Yifeng had no interest in the girl, but having Xin take the matter so lightly and give the servant girl the opportunity to see him more frequently he just couldn''t understand. "I will do as the Miss asks." "You may leave," Wang Yifeng said harshly. The girl quivered and scurried away. "Are you upset?" Xin asked. He could hear that she was amused and it irritated him. "You just made it easier for her to see me," he said coldly. Xin gathered the bowls and kept them aside. "Didn''t you just ask me to ask someone for help? Did my agreement notfort you?" "And you denied help saying it would make you ufortable. So, I let the matter go. Now you changed your mind and made a troublesome decision." Ah, so the Young Master was really bothered by this. It was funny seeing him this way and she couldn''t pinpoint what exactly had bothered him. "It''s just a little servant. Why are you so bothered?" she asked. "You are looking for trouble," he gritted through his teeth. "Maybe," she said, shrugging. This Li Na coulde in handy. She might be eyeing Yifeng, but keeping her close for short amounts of time would help Mian Mian keep a tab. If she was a second-generation servant in Yifeng''s house, she had a lot of information. Making friends was not the only way you could get intelligence from people. Eavesdropping and manipting them into spilling the truth was another art. "But you will not be inconvenienced. I will keep an eye on her. She won''t try to seduce you anymore." The most this servant could do was try to spread rumors about Xin or frame her. Xin wasn''t bothered in the least about those things. "So, you knew." She nodded. "I know my ce, Young Master, and I don''t dare to overstep them. I only wish you make life easier for you and me." She paused. "I can be willful at times and want to help you even though you don''t need it, but I consider that part of my duty as your kept mistress." Wang Yifeng winced at her words. Was that how she viewed herself? A woman who was brought in to serve him in every way? He thought for a minute. That was probably what he had brought her here for. So far, she had not asked for anything from him and was taking care of all his needs. "Leave the bowls. I will have the servants get it. If you are so inclined to help me, you can write a letter on my behalf." He passed a piece of paper and the quill to her. "Young Master trusts me to have good handwriting and the ability to read and write?" "I do not know about your handwriting, but your words exude literary knowledge. If your writing doesn''t meet my standards, I will discard it and ask someone else to do it for me." She threw her head back inughter. That petnt expression really got to her. Wang Yifeng gave her a re, making her stifle herughter. "What do you want me to write?" she asked. Her hand hovered over the sheet of paper, the quill between her fingers, prepared. He exined in short what needed to be written, keeping an eye on her expression, which did not shift in the slightest when she found out that it was for his newlywed concubine. He huffed internally as we watched her write. How would she word her concerns? Would she be able to maintain the virtuous persona that he had built? "Here," she said, after some time. The letter was written. Wang Yifeng inspected it and was surprised by her neat writing. It wasn''t the best he had seen, but it was indeed pleasant to the eyes. A surprised smile shed on his lips as he read through. "Lixue, it is already summer and I can''t help but think about how the weather is treating you while I am away. The servants you sent a few weeks prior arrived safely and they take good care of me. I hear that the weather is pleasant in the capital and it makes me nostalgic. They also say that you entertain yourself by swinging and spending time with your friends. What need do you have to get closer to heaven when you are already such a heavenly woman? Time spends slowly and the work is a lot, but the grace of the emperor has made life easier. I have no worries. I will be back soon. Yours, Yifeng." "I apologize to Young Master for my shortsightedness. You may discard the letter if it doesn''t meet your expectations." She ced her chin in her open palm and waited for him to reply.
