You chuckle at the thread. It brings you a small amount of joy to read all the nonsensical comments and stories. Somedays you wish the stories could be true, then you remember reality and are always disappointed. Thankfully your shift is ending and you are going home with some snacks and drinks the manager allowed you to take because they are expiring today. "Hey thanks again for the free food Jeff." He nods at you before manning the counter. Small mercies of having a good boss even when the job sucks. The bag brightens your mood from the soul sucking work day, you walk happily down the streets of your small town. The peace and quiet flood your body, rejuvenating the bone deep weariness. The closed down stores do sadden you. I''s been some 6 odd years since you ran away from the old life you had. It seems the town is dying out. Not enough jobs and not enough young people. Same as any other towns like it, entropy comes for all and won''t leave even good places like this alone. A sigh leaves you as the solitude fills you with peace once more. You know you will die in this town, more than likely alone with no family or friends. You can''t bring yourself to truly be open with people again. You know you don''t deserve anything good anymore. That opportunity passed ages ago. This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings. *SNAP**GROWL* What was that? That didn''t sound good. You stop and listen, the peace you had is now shattered. The noise continues. It''s ahead of you in a nearby alley. You inch yourself forward, your heart screaming at you in your ears. The sound gets louder the closer you get. You stop next to the entrance of the alleyway and peer in. A sense of wrongness creeps up your back in full at what you see. A person bent over eating something. At first you think it''s a homeless man eating from the dumpster, but the blood on the ground tells you otherwise. The crunching of something hard plummets your heart to your feet. Your breath comes shallow at the scene being presented to you, no matter how hard your brain fights the scene comes alive in your head. Cannibalism. Too much blood, the crunching, the bent over man, everything points to it. You feel sick at the realization. *cling* Your heart stops. It turns around. It faces you. You were never a religious man, but you prayed in that moment. The human isn''t right. It''s all wrong. It growls and you run. You run with no direction, you run with no stop as you hear the monster behind you growl and scream in malice and hunger. You pant like mad, your lungs burn in pain from intense use. Your heart thumps wildly like a herd of buffalos. But you keep running. If you stop you will die. So you keep running without much thought. Eyes only watching the road but not the direction. Pavement becomes packed dirt then grass. Soon it becomes tree roots and bushes. You still don''t think. You run like a prey animal. The monster follows like the reaper itself, you swear you feel the hot breath on your back. You start to believe that this is it. you will die in the forest and be eaten like the other man. But impossibilities are common today, or else why would there be a house becoming clearer in front of you? Truthfully it''s more of a shack but it''s something to put yourself between you and the monster for even a minute. You run harder and behind you hear a smacking noise and the pressure of death leave you. You tackle open he door and slam it shut. You sigh and look see the inside for the first time. Covered in dust and empty. "Hello is anyone home?! There is a monster outside and I need help!" The house stays empty for a minute. Rustling comes from the nearby couch covered in blankets. Out comes a woman looking severely malnourished and shoddy. Hair in knots and tangles. Her eyes are dull and glassy as if she just woke up. She looks at you in barely aware consciousness. "A monster?" She whispers in confusion. You nod. "Huh. Want some help with it?" The question stuns you at the sheer idea of it. You nod unconsciously and the women yawns as response. Can she really help with the monster? Chapter 2: Help from a witch "Well hello there beautiful." She was gushing over the monster clawing at an invisible wall set some dozen fee away from the hut. The monster was human like in a loose sense. You see the body twisted and crouched more like a beat than a human. It''s limbs were skeletal thin yet it could tear you apart with how violently the barrier shook from each wild swing. "I don''t know if I should call you lucky or unlucky! That is a Revenant and going by how it looks, it''s way older than 100 years! The eyes are abyss black and it have no intelligence anymore. This is a human killer alright and a powerful one with how my barrier is struggling to keep it." The witch, who calls herself Nani, continues to gush over the Revenant as if it was a puppy. The whole situation is surreal to you, a witch, a revenant, and you being in the middle of it all. "Anyway I can help you out, you did give me food and brought such a unique challenge to get me out of my slump. But there is a problem with getting rid of such an old revenant even if all it''s intelligence is gone." A shiver runs down your spine. You are getting help, but there is a stipulation. "What''s the problem then?" Nani smirks at your question. "Well revenants are life hating creatures, the more they eat humans and the longer they live the denser the negative energy gets. At this point trying to seal the Revenant would fail within a year. Killing it would spread so much negative energy that the area would spawn all sorts of baddies. Demons, Ghouls, Liches, and more. The thing is a walking bomb that can''t be killed or sealed by regular material means." Wait, material means? Does that mean- "But you are blessed by luck to have met me, Nani the corpse witch! Material based prisons won''t hold a monster, but a organic prison like a soul trapped in a body will definitely hold it! But even that comes with flaws and it''s own upkeep." If your emotions weren''t in a roller-coaster ride you would have clapped for the show she was putting on. The rapid swings between emotions and gesturing make it seem you are watching a play and not a witch who plays with forces you never knew. "S-so what can we do?" You whisper in worry. If Nani can''t solve the problem then you will be screwed so badly not even words could describe it. If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation. "Well sealing the Revenant in a body is easy and works well. The issue arises when the person that has the revenant needs to be loved and fed affection, or else the soul will build negative energy and the barrier separating the the two souls will be destroyed and the Revenant will take over again. Maybe this time even gaining back it''s intelligence. I don''t think I need to tell you how bad it will be if the Revenant gets smarter, right?" You two walk back into her hut as she explains the resulting failure of the seal. "Then all I need to do is to love the revenant? How do I do that?" She sighs at your failure to grasp her cryptic explanation. "Have you ever watched Nar*to before?" You nod, "Nar*to has a tailed beast sealed inside of him, we are just going to do the same with a dead body and a soul I have stashed about." "Why not seal it in me? Why in another person and why does it need love?" She sighs in frustration. "Just like in Nar*to the beast has it''s energy be filtered by the prison, with a Revenant like that you need a way to filter the negative energy to be better destroyed. And why love? Love is positive energy, like plant or sun magic. Love is the best way to combat long term negative energy, and I''m not talking about just putting a stick in a hole and calling that love. As for not you? You are alive and would make installing the Glyphs and enchantments onto your soul and skin a pain in the ass and not makes this whole thing not so fun anymore." She crosses her arms and stares at you, pressuring you into trying to argue with her judgment. You give a shaky nod back. You walk into her ritual room, limbs hang from hooks, eyes and other organs in glass containers filled with strong smelling fluids. The rooms seems so stereotypical to imagine a necromancer or an evil witch to use. "So do you want to choice, gamble, or let me choose the body and soul?" The question catches you off guard. Pick a soul and body that you will have to love and show affection to while it houses the soul of the Revenant. It fells impossible to make, your mind clouds in anxiety of each option. You bite your hand to wake you up. The pain grounds your thoughts and allow you to think clearly, the options are easier to compare now. None of the options are good, the 1st option means you are playing god pick who needs to suffer. The 2nd leaves it all up to chance while the 3rd gives power to Nani, who sees your plight as entertainment or a passion project rather than a problem. "The 2nd one." She nods and snaps her finger as a nearby head covered in ritualistic carvings snaps up and bellows out. "SOUL 21K5! BODY 21K5!" You flinch back at the voice. Nani laughs lightly at the results. "Well I guess you are blessed by luck to get the same body and soul from the gamble. Be sure to treat Maria Montoya well, she is your new lover after all." The Cheshire grin on her face causes your blood to freeze. You wonder if you made a mistake alrighty. Chapter 3: The Rebirth of Maria Montoya "S-so when do we get started?" You ask as Nani''s insanity sends shivers running up your spine. "Right now," her ear to ear grin caused panic to rise in you, "The Revenant is being hauled here anyway." Confusion hits you it the causual mention. "How.....?" Wordlessly she points behind you. You turn and see a sight that further shocks you. The Revenant was stuck in the body of a golem made of flesh. The surreal sight stuns you as the alagmation of flesh lumbers quietly past you. "Now all that''s left is some blood from you to start the ritual and then your new wife will rise from the dead! Oh this is like a D*sney movie!" She twirs with a joyrul flourish and manic laughter that bounced off the walls. The flesh golem began to purge the Revenant from the chest prison while other undead creatures rose around the room and began to gather ingredients for the ritual. Skeletons light the red candles and drew sigils on the floor. Stitch work zombies gathered reagents unknown to you. They ground, cooked, strained, and treated the ingredients every which way until a putrid black syrup laid in a mug before rhe witch. From a unknown door exits a nother lumbering flesh golem with what looks to be a sleeping woman trapped in the chest cavity. It shifts the flesh open to release the woman and a canister housing a floating pale blue lord that is lazily boding up and down. "There''s the bride! Meet miss Maria Montoya!" Nani gestures to the now named Maria, who laid in the middle of the finished ritualistic circle. The witch drags you to the center of the ritual, right before the corpse and canister you believe to be Maria''s soul. Tied down by ropes tied by talisman and metal stakes is the trashing revenant that you have forgotten. If not for the set up you know you would be dead in a second, that does not dissuade thoughts of bitter amusement at the monster''s situation. "Ow!" In your musing you didn''t recognize the pain of a knife across your hand which spills precious blood onto the body of Maria. Nani chants besides you, swinging a bloodied scalpel to a chant you don''t understand. The words grate at your mind in a perverse fashion. Headcahes and disorientation beat at your brain the further the chanting gets. If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. *ROAR* In either anger or fear the revenant screams louder than ever before, the trashing grows wilder as the ritual begins to solidify with magic. The sigils and gylphs begin to radiate and glow in unknown magical power you can''t begin to know anything about. *RROOAARR* It grows manic in its attempt to escape, yet the mystical methods hold as the corpse of Maria begins to float before Nani. She herself presses the bloody scalpel in the cup of magical reagents and cuts open the clothes and skin of the corpse. The cup of black swirls out of the cup and flows into the open cut. Your head shakes in pain, you grit your teeth in an attempt to focus on the ritual. You feel your eyes water, though the back of your brain hopes you are spilling tears and not blood. *RRROOOAAARRR* The monster screams with such malice you freeze in terror at the power. Sadly for all its anger and malice it can''t escape the lock and witch. You see the ritual bath the room in a eye burning red. The chanting grows more manic with the Revenant growing violent. "N-nani..." The abuse from it all drives you to your knees. You barely stay concious through the ritual. In a flash of light the ritual finished. The pain subsided, your conciousness is clear. You look up to see the Revenant gone. Nothing about it was there, you feel some part of peace at that. "Well that is probably some of my best work yet!" Nani twirls around in happiness. You slip a chuckle at the infectous hapiness of hers. "Now lets wake up your wife shall we?" At her stare you lock up. This was the rules you agreed to, yet some part of your wanted to defy it all and leave. You nod at her and walk to the still body of Maria. "Sooooo, what do I do?" Truthfully you feel a mix sense of fear and embarrassment. It may not be your first love interest but the circumstances and time since your last romance enhance the jitters. "Kiss her on the lips! Just like sn*ow wh*te!" A burning blush hangs on your face at the sheer idea of such a thing. The witch claps behind you and pressures you into the kiss with giddness in her tone. You suck up your fears and kiss your new partner. Cold lips meet yours and a sense of calmness covers you. Before you can sigh in relief her eyes open. They are pitch black. Soulless. Empty pits. They satre at you. You flinch back it the soulless eyes that seem to drill into you with an unknown emotion. Fear runs through your body, you feel your breath become shallow. You feel this was a terrible idea and wish you never agreed to this. You need to ru- *SNAP* A finger snap next to your head wakes you back to normalcy. Maria blinks at the snap as well, causing whatever hold her eyes had on your to be broken. Her eyes stay soulless black pits but whatever mystical qualities they had are gone. Leaving emotionless windows staring at the witch. "Now lets get to know each other with some food!" Nina smiles as she breaks whatever tension held between you two. Maybe some food would help after all.
