《Honey, I'm home! [HIATUS]》 01 I exist? The first thing I noticed was an incessant buzzing. An endless vibration, it was annoying at first but after a long time it grew on me. I couldn''t perceive anything besides that buzzing and a constant, jarring, vibration. After a long time in the dark, I started to remember things. Just a few scraps here and there, but pursuing them gave me something to do. I liked to make things. I loved pie and ice cream. I have a favorite spoon. My name was.... well it started with a B. I think. Well, it was a work in progress I guess. I spent most of my time listening to the jarring thumping, and the endless buzzing, wondering what the hell was going on. After a while, I put together a few more memories. It seems my full name was Brian.... something, and I worked as a delivery driver. I delivered packages to people''s doors, and I lived in Idaho. Also that thumping feeling felt an awful lot like I was running around. But I couldn''t be running around, could I? I couldn''t see anything. How could I run anywhere? After a long while, I remembered how to do math. Counting Fibonacci numbers, calculating prime numbers, calculating out the digits of Pi, these all kept me occupied for a while. I spent a great deal of time just feeling and counting the footsteps I was apparently making, and after a while, my senses resolved a bit as I noticed I would step around 51 times, then make a turn. I deduced I was pacing around the edge of a square room. Entirely too proud of this deduction, I suddenly had a way to keep track of time.If you come across this story on Amazon, it''s taken without permission from the author. Report it. After 38 laps I remembered that my last name was Toner. After 56 laps I remembered my cactus collection. After 115 laps I remembered my favorite books. After 334 laps, I remembered my own death. I lost count of the laps. I was stabbed in the gut by a tree branch after falling off the roof. I was patching a hole and my foot punched through. I lost my balance and fell off onto an old Hawthorn tree. The thorn in the name isn''t there for show either. I got pretty torn up, spent about a week in the hospital, and I''m pretty sure I died of infection. It''s kind of sad realizing I was an idiot in my last life. I should have hired someone to fix the roof instead of trying to be cheap. My existential crisis did not last long. I might remember dying, but I was still here. That counted for something, right? Knowing I had died, though, that opened some strange doors in my mind. If this was Heaven it was pretty weird. I guess the soft buzzing could be interpreted as an angelic choir, maybe? It was definitely soothing. If it was hell, the punishment seemed pretty light. I mean, I wasn''t a bad person, but hell is supposed to be pretty bad. I felt like I could rule that one out. Maybe I reincarnated or something? Into something that has no eyes and makes buzzing noises, endlessly walking around in circles? That''s pretty horrifying, I guess. I can''t really think of anything else, I guess I''ll go with that unless something better comes up. Oh, wait... I read some trashy novels about reincarnation a while back. After looking at it for a while, suddenly everything made sense. Or not.. What was this, a cosmic joke? Am I chopped liver to you? No, that''s right, I couldn''t bee, I''m a frigging beehive. Sigh. And don''t throw a fuss about me sighing, either, it''s not my fault someone neglected to give me the ability to breathe! It''s a mental sigh, and I deserve it! I don''t know what''s worse, the fact that I became a beehive, or the fact it apparently took me 3 years to figure it out. After ranting about the injustice of the universe to myself for a while, and cussing out every divinity I could think of, I gave up and decided to figure out what I could do with my new skill, coerce bees. It had become obvious that the buzzing I felt was bees. Maybe I could figure out how to do something. After mentally yelling ¡°COERCE BEES¡±, trying to meditate on the nature of bees, drawing mental pictures of bees, and various other failed attempts at using my new skill, I figured it out. I focused really hard on the background humming sound, and politely asked the bees to help me make honey. I felt a strange click, like gears locking into place, then a strand of something spun out of me and formed into a complex set of patterns, then a few strands spun off of that and latched on to something. Suddenly, I was seeing stuff! It was so surprising it took me quite a while to figure out what I was seeing. Suddenly being blindsided by actually being able to see after three years was quite startling after all. The view was quite blurry, but I could see a very bright light, a large room with lots of plants, and a number of figures stumbling about the light around the edges of the room. My new BeeVisionTM was really grainy beyond a foot or so, but I watched my new favorite bee grab some nectar from a flower, then turn around and fly... back... towards... one of the shambling figures. As we got closer, I could see more of the figure. It was a desiccated corpse with plant bits growing out of holes in its flesh. I became more and more unnerved and upset the farther my new least favorite bee traveled. It landed on the zombie thing, and... crawled inside a hole in it''s chest. From there, I could clearly see a beehive From there, the bee crawled onto the hive and spit nectar into a cell, and my vision went black. Nooooooooooo! That''s gross! Why do I have to be a beehive in a zombie? I demanded a refund before, but now I don''t even want my money back! I want off Mr. Bones''s Wild Ride! I want off Mr. Bones''s Wild Ride! I want off Mr. Bones''s Wild Ride! I want off Mr. Bones''s Wild Ride! I want off Mr. Bones''s Wild Ride! I want off Mr. Bones''s Wild Ride! After mentally screaming incoherently for a while, I calmed down a bit. Despite my situation, I had a tool with which I could affect my escape. A really terrible tool. At least 12 bees. It is a time for calm and steady work. Deep imaginary breaths, Brian. You don''t have to freak out. And so I unleashed the bees. Operation Freedom was at hand!. Frigging nasty though. 03 Curing a zombies hives Oh, this is gross. This is really, really gross. Apparently getting free is going to be harder than I thought. I asked the bees one at a time to help chew me out of the zombie, apparently I can control one bee per skill level on a task with coerce bees. How do I know this? I''m level 1 now instead of level 0. Seeing out of two bees at the same time, while they try to chew holes in zombie flesh is absolutely nauseating. It''s a good thing these bees can''t taste much, because if I had to taste this too I would be.... unhappy. At least they aren''t eating it. For now I''m investing my efforts in figuring out how not to feel like I need to vomit with the multiple perspectives. I''m not too worried, at the rate these bees are chewing, I have plenty of time to figure it out. Plenty of time. Plenty... of time. Lots of time. Oh, look, I can see a rib! Wait a minute...... I''m a fool. I forgot about the bone! I can''t fit between the ribs! I don''t know how big I am but I''m bigger than a heart. I screwed up!!!!!! Aww, fudge crackers! At least there''s plenty of flowers the bees like, I''m not going to starve or anything. Why the hell are there flowers underground anyway? That mini sun must be feeding the plants, but this, and the plant zombie things doesn''t seem natural. Whatever, I gotta focus on freedom. These strange goings on might be important, but they are less important than getting the heck out of here. And I have to start over and get myself out through the bottom of the ribcage instead of being a moron. I guess panic does make you do stupid things, even when you think you''ve calmed down. If you come across this story on Amazon, it''s taken without permission from the author. Report it. Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. Oh, I leveled up my skill again. And I figured out how to shut off BeeVisionTM. Turns out there''s these weird mental threads attached to my senses that funnel in those bee senses. If I pinch em a bit with my brain the input stops. Yes, I know it sounds dumb. You try to explain it then! Ooh, a new bee was born. After asking a bee to go help me count the other bees (way harder than it sounds, they never all stop moving around) I''ve determined there''s now exactly 14 of them. They''re all slightly different, and the longer I spend watching them and asking them to do stuff, the more obvious it becomes. There''s two older ones, with dull carapace and going a bit bald, both of whom refuse to help with the escape plan. They just make honey all day. Honestly I can''t blame them. I kind of picture them like old retirees. There''s 8 adults who seem quite enthused about the escape plan, at this point I can request things from 5 of them now, but I only ask 4 at a time so the others can have some leisure time to eat and sleep. There''s the queen, she seems pretty lazy honestly. If we had netflix, she''d be watching it right now, I can tell. Surprisingly these bees aren''t especially promiscuous, but they all go up to the queen and do funky dances all the time. She spends a lot of the day doing weird dances at the other bees, or napping. Honestly not sure what that''s all about. There''s three young bees now, and the young bees seem absolutely dead set on doing the opposite of whatever I say. They all hang out together, and I just know they are corrupting the new member of the family. They keep building on the hive even though I asked them not to. At least they''re industrious little delinquents. I think when I use BeeVisionTM I pick up a little of their emotions. Didn''t know bees had emotions, but you learn something new every day. These bees are also probably really big compared to any bees I remember seeing back home. I wonder what kind of bees they are? They don''t look like honeybees, and they''re making papery structures, but they do make honey. How buzzare. I only realized when one landed on the zombie''s forearm, but all the bees are only a bit smaller the zombie''s thumb. People on this world could be really small, I guess, but all the zombies are about the same size... Unless this was a colony of short people, I''m going to assume everyone is regular sized. Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. It''s been a while since we started the new escape plan, and I''ve discovered something weird. My hive is wrapped around a strange looking crystal in the zombie''s chest. It''s glowing a bit. It''s too big to fit through the ribs, but only by a little. I only noticed it after we chewed through the lungs a bit and the hive dropped about an inch and rolled over. The queen did not like that at all, She went and danced at all the other bees quite vigorously, almost like she was lecturing them. I think maybe she was. The crystal was only visible from the bottom, I guess the bees built around it. A crystal in the poor corpses chest? Perhaps this was a special organ of people here. I''ve noticed the organs in these zombies aren''t quite the same as human organs. Maybe it''s a magic organ or something, and it''s why I''m alive. I''d better cover it up just in case. Magic organs. I''m alive despite not having a body. This world is weird. I'' m not sure what''s going to happen, but I''ve got a feeling this is gonna bee one hell of a good time. I send the delinquents some imagery, a little this and a little that kind of like a mental slide show, and I try to get my point across. I work on getting them to know that the crystal is cool, and they absolutely better not build any nest over it, and immediately they start trying to do the opposite. Thanks delinquents, it''s nice to know I can count on you for this. They''re not so bad, after all. Maybe I should figure out how to make friends. 04 Positively Unbeelieveable I''ve made another discovery! Before the delinquents could completely finish walling off the crystal, One of the old timers dropped off some nectar, and a little wisp of something came off of it, and the crystal got just a little bit brighter! Is this magic? Have I just learned the secret? Or if it gets too bright will the crystal explode? Either way I need to keep an eye on it now. I get the adults to come build a little room around the crystal that''s visible so I can send someone to check on it but it''s not visible from outside. To keep the kids distracted I attempt to tell them a story with my skill. I throw together a lot of imagery and try to put some narrative on it, but I''m pretty sure I don''t do a very good job. The bees don''t seem to care though, I bet they''ve never seen anything like it. They all find a spot on the comb to rest and listen attentively, rubbing their little feet together. It''s so cute! I can''t beelieve it! After a little thought I decide to tell the story of Simbelmyn?, the only legendary flower I could think of at the moment, and how it grew on the Barrowfield of the Kings of Rohan, and most especially on the tomb of Helm Hammerhand, and I project a chaotic slideshow series about his life and Rohan in general. At first the kids seem confused, but then I gained a new skill, basic psionics, and suddenly they were enraptured in the story. The little threads I was using to link to the bees moved around, and the complex weave of threads and mana bits in various shapes got even more complicated. I almost was disappointed to stop, but trying to figure out how to tell stories one image at a time is pretty hard. I guess all those hours talking to my friends in high school about The Lord of the Rings came in handy after all! Wouldn''t my mother be surprised! My new psionic skill allows me to overhear the young one''s feelings a bit, they''re definitely feeling excited, and a bit aggresive even. I overhear a loud thought about smiting their enemies with their fists as they fly off, divebombing each other and smacking each other with their tiny legs. I laugh to myself, after all, they don''t have fists? Imagining bees with beefy human arms occupies my afternoon as the hive helps me move ever closer towards escape. Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. My new psionic skill is very interesting. A lot of things are muddled, but it''s useful knowing what''s going on with the hive. The bee''s dancing is actually a weird sign language. I say weird because it''s a little hard to take the queen''s lectures seriously if they involve doing a barrel roll or rubbing her tummy. They can''t talk though, so I guess it can''t be helped. If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. I guess the hive doesn''t mind listening to me sometimes, but they get annoyed if I ask too much. Now that I can read a little bit of thoughts, it becomes clear the skill coerce bees was really just a one way psionic skill all along. As soon as I thought that, a notification appeared.

Nice? I guess? I lost two ranks but I''m betting psionic powers work on anything with a brain, rather than just bees. Maybe I can talk to the zombies, now that I think about it. ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ I connected to it but I don''t hear anything. I can feel it taking steps, but it''s like the light''s on but nobody is home. I stay connected for a while longer, when suddenly it happens. A voice speaks, and it feels like it''s a long way off. But it is very loud. ... PATROL! DEFEND! ¡ It''s quiet again after that. Am I in a dungeon or something? Also, the queen has taken up residence in the little crystal room, and a vague sense of distress leads me to skim her thoughts. The crystal dimmed a lot suddenly. She''s upset because she was admiring how it made her fur and carapace shine. Wow, what a vain bee. I cut off the connection. Right now I''m guessing psionic powers use mana. And now I have a mana gauge and a bunch of industrious little folks who''d love to help me get more. I''d be steepling my fingers and laughing maniacally right now if I weren''t a beehive. The revelation that these zombies are just empty puppets means maybe I can someday... Being stuck where someone''s heart should be is a bit gross, but so is being a human, I guess. These zombies don''t have to eat, or breathe, or do anything, really. Maybe if the bees chewed all the meat off the zombie''s bones it could be a skeleton. That''d be less gross. There''s magic here after all. Let''s put Project : Escape From Meat Mountain on hold for a bit while I see if this is even feasible. 05 Hive Mecha Hmmm. Hmmm... I''ve been at it for a while, but after depleting the crystal a few times, I ran out of space to put nectar while it ferments into honey. Looks like I''ll have to slow down for a bit. Right now I''m literally too sweet for my own good. I made some progress though. Last time I connected, I managed to get the zombie to stumble and fall down. Not really the kind of progress I wanted, but I think I''ll cancel the escape for now, and we''ll make the hive a bit bigger. A little more space will get me a bit more mana to play with when we fill it up. These bees are pretty voracious though, they eat their own body weight in honey twice a day! I won''t have to wait too long regardless. The queen laid another egg, so that''s good. I learned that bees have names, but they''re all combinations of dance moves, kind of hard to pronounce, really. It seems very colonial of me, but I''m probably just going to give them english names, since I''m not likely able to figure out their language anytime soon. It''s too complex and weird. I decided to name one of the older bees who insists on making honey all day and grooming the other bees Geraldine after learning she also frets about their health. She''s very grandmotherly. She''s not very exciteable, and she takes long naps, I like her. The hive expanded to almost twice its size after I asked for help expanding from the bees. I also asked them to clear more space in the chest for more beehive, since I finally managed to get the zombie to take a step by itself! This is a good sign, I think I can be a meat mecha pilot! This wasn''t exactly Plan A, but I''m pretty sure it would be faster than getting the bees to drag me around. If I can use the zombie as transport, it might be worth hanging on to for a while though. This is a land of magic though, and I''m sure I can find a better ride eventually, this thing isn''t exactly luxury transport. Next step in the plan is to figure out how to gather mana better, and how to store more. That''ll help me work towards controlling the zombie better. I''ve got a feeling this is going to take a lot of mana to master. While I''ve got all these spare zombies here, I might as well conduct some experiments as well. I need to understand how the zombies work if I''m going to get anywhere. Hell, if the zombie crystal is really why I''m alive, I need to understand all I can about it. Let''s find out what''s in these other zombies. Let''s see... You seem to like this kind of work, how about you go help me scout out the inside of a zombie, yes? Good, thank you little one. Chew chew chew.Did you know this text is from a different site? Read the official version to support the creator. Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. Oh, would you look at that, that other zombie didn''t die when we destroyed its brain. I guess pop culture lied to me. There is a little crystal in here though. I ask Eliza to get it for me. She''s a nice bee, even if she likes chewing up human flesh a bit more than I feel comfortable with. She seems to be up for volunteer work, but only if it involves gore. She grabs the crystal for me, it''s pretty small, and I stick it next to the heart crystal in my hive and it slowly starts to glow green! Not quite sure what that''s about but I''m excited to find out Let''s do more organ scouting. What have we here? Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. Oh, nice, all these zombies have crystals in them. There''s one in the brain that is small and glows various colors when charged, and one in the chest that''s huge and always glows blue. After some time, Eliza managed to get me all the brain crystals, and I had a few of the others work on digging out more heart cores. I now have 6 different brain crystals. One red, two green, one white, one gray, and one yellow. How to use them and what they do, however, I have no idea. I''ve tried a lot of things at this point, many of which are too embarrassing to mention. One thing''s for sure, they don''t respond to any of the power ranger morphing sequences. Yelling ¡°By the power of Grayskull¡± does nothing either. It''s going to take me a while to steal the heart crystals, they''re a lot bigger. I think I''ll poke around some more and see if I can figure something out while we work on acquiring them. Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. Chew chew chew. Oh, look, my status says I turned 4! and for my birthday present... We''re adding all six heart crystals to my hive, charging them up, and getting the heck out of here. The delinquents chewed a lot of the meaty bits off our zombie while the others were diligently working on the plan. You can see most of his bones, and he doesn''t smell like rot anymore, at least according to the bees. Not really sure how well bees can smell, honestly. I have no frame of reference. It looks like they slowly charge over time in addition to gaining a bit of charge from honey production. The more I get, the more I''ll be able to spend without worrying! Nice! Ooh, they''re finally charged! It''s time! I must be projecting my excitement, because all the bees came to watch! Power containment units --- Online Weapons systems --- Offline Forward propulsion units --- Online Steering systems --- Absolute garbage I really want to say All Systems Nominal, but they''re really not. But we''re moving around! The hive mecha is live, baby! I make the zombie clumsily stumble around and finally leave the room I was born in! There''s a hallway! So exciting and new! There''s a dead body around the corner, and this one doesn''t walk. He''s wearing a bunch of old rags and what looks like a messenger bag, and there''s a rusty axe on the ground next to him. Looks like he got his head chewed off, and I''m betting I know who did it. Poor dude. I won''t let your sacrifice be in vain. After at least 20 minutes of struggle I get the messenger bag off him and throw it over zombie''s shoulder, and 4 attempts later I manage to pick up the axe. An entire heart crystal is drained from my psionics by now, but I''m not too worried, I have 5 more and I can always fill it back up. I''ve been very patient. But now I''m excited. The bees have already mangled these zombies pretty badly, at my instruction, and they''ll be easy prey, even with my cruddy movements. I''m pretty sure they won''t even fight back. Looks like it''s time to see if I can level up. 06 Time to axe some pointed questions

I took quick stock of my character sheet. Getting ready was more than just physical, a reminder of what I had at my disposal would prep me to better use my capabilities when they came up. Unfortunately my skills were pretty sparse at the moment. I feel like I''m in a weird dream, drifting about, and that''s really not helping. I fired up my psionics and decided to practice with the axe I looted off that poor sod from the hallway. Here I was, puppeteering a walking corpse with magic. This was not helping my dreamlike impression. What the hell is with that, anyway? It''s so unrealistic. Am I in a video game or something? I seriously doubted it, but if it was a game, I probably hadn''t paid enough money for it. If I told someone back home I was an animated beehive moving around a dehydrated old corpse with my magic skills they''d assume I was a complete psycho. And they wouldn''t be wrong. Have I lost my mind? Maybe. Whatever, if I have, I have, and no amount of talking to myself will get it back. It''s time to get serious. I made some clumsy slow slices, hitting some of the big leaves hanging off the doorway for target practice. The first swing completely missed. The second was so weak it bounced off the leaf. Or maybe the axe was just that dull. I see. This is gonna take a while...This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author''s work. A long while later, I had shredded a few dozen leaves with my axe, and it was looking like I was going to make an impression. Haha! I even managed to stop dropping my axe! Progress! I decided I wasn''t going to get any better, and I took myself and my green stained axe and headed back in the sun orb room. I decided to get clever, and lined up a swing at neck height, did a few full swings to make sure I was in a good position, and waited for one to come to me. It took a few minutes but it was easier than chasing them. 07 Discovering Harmadillos I always underestimate how much effort it takes to clean up after I make a mess. Maybe I should make fewer messes. I end up clearing a small space near the sun orb, and sit with my back to the bright light. I kind of want to attempt to steal it, but I''m not sure how to get it down, it''s about 12 feet in the air if these zombies are an average human height. No idea how it works but if it''s an endless floating light source... Towing it around on a leash might be fun! But I digress. I need to do magic stuff now, magic stuff makes Brian stronk... Oh, and see my loot. What did I get! Ooh, I''m excited! A gentle request has most of the bees come back while I begin fumbling at the clasp on my new bag. It hasn''t been cared for in a while and definitely needs to be oiled, it''s a bit stiff, kind of like its old owner. Poor... guy? Girl? I didn''t exactly check. They aren''t exactly human, so maybe... Poor person? No that just sounds like they''re broke, not murdered in a hallway and left to rot. Ah, I know! Pitiful creature! I feel bad for whoever or whatever that pile of rotten bloody rags used to be. Not bad enough to keep me from looting the poor bugger, but bad enough I feel guilty about it. Man this knot is hard to open. I''d cut it but then how would I close the bag? I finally got the knot open, these fingers are not very dexterous. Inside I find... Several papers. I get excited and since I let Eliza go eat some delicious honey, I co-opt Gertrude to get closer to do some reading. Her vision isn''t great but she''s usually hanging around, it''s harder for her to go do hive chores like cleaning, and building, since her joints aren''t so good. After some time looking at the papers I learn I can''t read whatever language this is. They look kind of like wanted posters with various monsters and plants pictured upon them though. I''m guessing these are pictures of valuable items, maybe I can learn a few things from the pictures. Inside is also a small hand mirror, some rather fine rope, a few pitons, some twine, a small hammer, and some paper wrapped brown bricks that look kind of like protein bars. There''s also a knife and a whetstone in here. A little bag has a few funky looking tiny stamped brass ingots in it, and I get a hunch. Comparing the writing on the ingots with the writing on the papers, I find that some of the symbols match. I think I have just found money. I pack everything back in the bag, and check my power levels. They''ve not gone up much, so I decide to see if I can get some more magic while I wait. I can already do a little psionic magic and I know it uses mana, so lets see if paying really close attention grants me any insight. I connect and disconnect with bees while analyzing the sensations involved. I get the feeling the actual connection with the bees is extremely complex, and the skill I was granted is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. I''m sorry for disparaging you before, system, this is actually kind of cool. I don''t think I''m able to learn a different type of connection without more info though. When making a connection with a bee, the mana contorts in a very intricate pattern, after which it is changed somehow. After the mana is changed, a connection is formed, and the connection itself is complex with many functional parts. It reminds me of looking at a combustion engine, a little. There''s at least 12 parts which feed back in to other parts while also feeding in to the main connection point, and I can barely understand what is going on. After looking for a while, I decide to call all the little parts spell constructs, since they''re like little parts that come together to perform a function. That function being a spell. Giving up a bit, I start analyzing the other end of the tether. This one is actually pretty simple. There''s a fine connection from the mana crystal to me, and a thicker connection between the mana crystal and the bee, with only a few linear pieces along it''s length. It''s something I can easily replicate. I build a second connection from me to the mana crystal, build a line out and build a connection to a pebble in front of me, and open the connection. The rock vibrates a bit, then starts to glow red and melts. Nice! But that was pretty mana intensive, I discharged a quarter crystal just to melt a tiny pebble. Lets experiment and see if I can up the efficiency a bit. This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source. A few dozen tests later I get a notification
You have learned Basic Mana Manipulation.
Hell yeah! With that little notification I suddenly understand what some of the little parts are. That one is a link, for chaining together two similar powers, that one is a link for chaining together two different things and... oh wait the rocks were melting because I was using the wrong kinds of links. I should use this one for physical objects, chain them together with this thing for backflow prevention and... and... It appears to be faintly glowing blue, but I''m not really sure. I might be a bit underwhelmed here, I liked melting rocks a bit more., I cut the connection and think for a while, going over all the new patterns and shapes I can flow mana into. After a bit of pondering, I try something new. If I put a small cycler and a one way valve on the end of the line near a rock, and run a line around the edges of the rock, I can pump mana in to the line, and it spins around the rock really fast, and doesn''t dissipate as rapidly. It takes a few seconds, but the rock still melts and it costs way less. Progress! My mana crystals are almost full, so I decide to probe the brain crystals and those weird green marbles a bit to see what exactly is up with them before I go explore some more. After my level up I understand a little more about the psionic spell I have, but it''s still way beyond my ability to understand, it''s a well oiled machine and I''m still playing with sticks. What I do know is that the spell first translates the regular mana into another type of mana it uses for the psionic spell. After probing the little brain crystals, I conclude these are tiny storages for typed mana, but I''m not really familiar with what kinds they are. I might have to play around a bit before I can figure that out. When I try to probe the little green orbs, I get a weird feeling, almost like a suction, which keeps getting stronger. Then I notice it''s draining my mana, and cut the connection. I need that, you dumb spheres! You can''t sucker me so easily! I''m still not quite sure what they are, but whatever they do they probably need to be charged. I''ll deal with them later. After a little while longer, I stand up, fully powered and a bit more efficient and precise with my mana usage. Hefting the new axe with a dead hand, I notice it''s easier to work the fingers now. I''m recharged and it''s time to go discover what''s at the end of that hallway. Mana manipulation levels up, and I step outside and head down the corridor. Passing my crumpled benefactor again, I give them a quick nod of respect, and pass around a corner out of sight. After a few more turns, I enter another room like the zombie room. This one has holes and tunnels in the walls and floor and it makes me way too uncomfortable. Suddenly one of the mounds of dirt shifts, and out pops something that looks like a cross between an armadillo and a rat. It stares right at me, then makes a yipping noise and runs right at me. I suddenly notice it has giant clawed paws like a mole, and feel a strong desire not to get raked over by them. It runs forward and rears up on its hind legs, bringing it to a height of about 70 cm, not including the big arms, and starts taking swipes at me, yipping all the while. I back up, swinging the axe wildly and we both miss. More swings follow, and eventually after entirely too many attempts, I manage to hit it on the paw with a glancing strike. It squeals and runs back into the room, diving in one of the holes and disappearing from sight. I hear more yipping, but it''s muffled. Some of the yipping definitely overlaps each other, there''s more than one down there. Suddenly I hear a lot of yipping and it''s getting louder. And louder. There''s a lot of these things down there. I decide to take the better part of valor, and begin backing away from the room. A few moleratmadillows pop out of the ground and look right at me, yipping loudly and beginning a charge across the holey ground. Oh shit... 08 Hive made a mistake. Hasty backpedaling leads to me tripping on the rough ground, something I really don''t need with these moleratmadillos closing in. I manage to get to one knee as the first beast opens its jaws, and I attempt an underhanded swing at the bottom of the creature''s jaw. It connects, but it''s not a solid blow. The creature''s jaw slams shut, severing a chunk of its tongue and spraying arterial blood everywhere. I''m glad I left my new bag near the sun orb, I guess I''m not completely stupid after all. I pull back on the axe and it makes a sucking sound and pulls free along with a chunk of furry skin and a bit of bloody slurry. A swift overhand puts the creature down for good, driving its head into the dirt and causing its eyes to protrude comically from its skull. I pull on the axe but it doesn''t come free. Another is on me in an instant, and I''m forced to scramble back and give ground, a second creature hot on its heels. I suddenly realize that without a plan I''m gonna get chewed to bits by these stupid, fuzzy, plated, hole digging, annoying varmints. My life flashes before my eyes a bit, and I decide that I refuse to die to a stupid oversized rat. I didn''t want to ask the bees for help, because they seem kind of fragile and I''ve grown fond of them. They might not be geniuses but they aren''t nearly as dumb as I thought a bee would be, and they make good company. I gently ask if they could distract the rearmost beast and buy me a little time. Of course the industrious little buggers are happy to help, and they all roar out in defense of the hive. I see Eliza sting the creature right in the eye before I suddenly become preoccupied with my own fight. Thank goodness the queen is still here with me, I completely forgot to ask someone to hang back so I could still see. The view isn''t that great as we exchange blows and jostle the hive, but it''s way better than nothing. The beast lunges forwards and crashes into me, snapping it''s jaws. I hold an arm out and push back, while punching it in its snout with the other hand. A few blows later it squeals and snaps at my hand, taking a pinky and half of a ring finger with it. It keeps pushing me back, and I''m not going to win a contest of strength. I focus and begin to string together a few mana constructs, linking up to the pinky finger I can still see hanging between the creature''s teeth. I see smoke, then suddenly the Moleratmadillow looks panicked and its mouth opens wide in a screech. I shove my already mangled hand down its throat and hold it there, grabbing on with my other arm to keep it from escaping. After a few cycles of power through my hand as I push, there''s smoking holes all down the creature''s neck where burning hot bits of calcium went through. I pull my arm free and let go, and it makes a horrid wheezing sound and attempts to crawl away. I stand and rush over and make a new attempt to free the axe, succeeding this time, and take a few quick strides over to the other beast. It''s currently flailing wildly while a few bees fly around it, keeping its attention. They''ve done a number to it, and most of its unarmored flesh is swollen or bleeding. I almost feel sorry for it. As I get ready to put it down I recall the bees to keep them out of harms way. An upward swing from ankle height combined with a lunging forward step drives the axe upward into the creatures underbelly, lifting it off the ground a bit with the force. A quick push on the handle flips it over on to its back. A step next to the axe blade and a yank, and I''m ready to swing again, and I bury it right in its unarmored throat. I take a step back out of range of those claws as I take stock and it gargles it''s last. The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation. There''s a lot of chunks missing off the zombie I''m piloting. But the real casualties are with the bees. I can see one of the adults weakly fluttering its legs near the tunnel wall, another split in half by a sweep of the moleratmadillow''s clawed paw, and one of the elders was squished between its back and the floor as the beast rolled about and flailed. The bees are proud of victory, but exhausted and sad too. We''re all just lucky these bees aren''t the kind who die after stinging. This could have been so much worse. I ask a few uninjured bees to clear out a larger cell in the hive, and put the injured bee in it, sealing her up with wax so her head is poking out like a full body cast. Hopefully she''ll heal up with time. I attempt to pick up the dead bees, but I forgot I only have one hand, and there''s an axe in it. I head back to the cleared room, place down the axe, retrieve the bag, and grab both bees and place them in the outer pocket. In the back corner of the flowering zombie room, I spend some time digging a hole with one gouged up hand and lay them to rest. I don''t think the bees understand, but I tell them it''s a gesture of respect for their sacrifice, and they go along with it. There''s minor injuries to most of the bees, and they''re mostly resting anyway. I sit down and firm my resolve. This is my fault. I could have spent a few more days training, I could have used more caution and asked a bee to scout ahead, I could have done a lot of things, but I didn''t and now thinking beings that trusted me were dead. I didn''t feel very victorious. I didn''t want this to happen ever again. So I trained.
Spell List Unlocked Levitate (Basic) Earthshape (Basic) Heat (Basic) Spark (Basic) Grow (Basic) Psionic Screech (Intermediate)
I studied the brain crystals and figured out how to use their manas with the mana constructs I already had. I also learned to recharge and transmute their mana types. It turned out there was a small section embedded in the crystal with mana constructs for transmuting their mana types built in. The basic functions of the mana present when channeled were fairly easy to bring out. I could make most things smoke or melt given enough mana present now, conjure a small spark, speed up and control the growth of a plant a bit, cause soil to move around a bit, and make objects float based on the basic properties of these mana, With the forms I learned and the understanding I gained, I built a simple psionic spell that projected a feedback loop of the targets own mind overlapping on to itself. An amplified echo of what they were experiencing was projected in to their mind again a few seconds after experiencing it. I tested it on my self and it was annoying and disorienting. Two overlapping series of events going on at once really messed with my reaction times and concentration too. I was a bit proud of that spell. I looted the crystals from the corpse of the poor sod in the hallway, and tried to loot the moleratmadillows but all but one corpse had been eaten, and there wasn''t much left of the last one. The bees all healed up all right, and although there were a few crooked limbs among the crowd, none of them were bothered much. During the time I trained, I intermittently charged the green orbs I had found in the nasty zombie organ. They glowed a bit brighter every day, and every time I charged them I felt something strange, like a vibration. While practicing my manipulation of heat in an attempt to learn how to freeze something, I paused and charged the crystals once again, and this time something clicked into place. I think I just found something important.
Life Force Unlocked Creature Type Changed: Chimeric Animated Beehive
09 Everythings vine and dandy Chimeric? I don''t know what that means exactly but it sounds cool. Does that mean I can grow a goat, snake and lion head? Maybe I won''t need to have a zombie corpse drag me about. Let''s find out.
Announcements Congratulations, monster! For grafting more than 5 soul cores and using foreign flesh as if it is your own, you unlock the Chimera subrace. You are granted access to the resource Lifeforce. To use Lifeforce, think Lifeforce Menu. To gain Lifeforce, graft more soul cores, or consume living creatures. Happy Hunting!
Okay, what the heck? What''s this now? How Rude! Calling me a monster right off the bat... There''s a lot of dangerous information in this notice. It wants me to eat creatures alive? That''s pretty evil, and I don''t really have a mouth. Have I just been given a terrible subclass? How am I supposed to see this? I''ve been grafting souls on to mine or something? That sounds like its unwise, but I already did it and it doesn''t feel too bad. I think. Gotta crack a few eggs to make an omelette anyway, if it''s my new cheat I might as well get some use out of it, even if it''s creepy. I''m reserving judgement. I need to see what I can do with this first.
Lifeforce Menu 1 life force equals the life energy of a low leveled living being. Only beings beyond a certain level of intelligence and size can condense a soul core to store their life force and anchor their soul in. Oh. OH. OHHHHHH! This is really cool! I take it back, I''ll graft cores if I can have my own legs! Screw the consequences, I can handle it, I''m a beehive, and I beelieve I can do it. I just got a growth spell, and there''s lots of cool plants in here. Bees like plants anyway, lets build a plant body. First we need a plan though. I want to mount magic weapons on it, and some flowers so I have a mobile food source for my inhabitants. I want it to look cool, be tough, and be fixable with my growth spell if I get really mangled. After that fight a bit ago, my missing hand and fingers are really dragging on me. First I''m guessing I should remove myself from the zombie, then I should have a section of the hive built for soul cores. Then I''ll see about giving myself some plant legs, it''s less gross than messing with meat and I need to practice my growth spell anyway. I can''t afford anything right now, but I might as well start planning. It looks like I''m going to have to do some killing to get out of here after all. Let''s see... Plants... Plants... Let''s look at all the ones back in the sun room, and see what I have to work with. This one has cool flowers but it''s too weak stem-wise to support weight. I like the yellow leaf highlights on this one, but it doesn''t really have a stem, it''s all leaf. This one is tough and stringy, but it''s kind of ugly. Hmmm. Wait, I''m I chimera now, I bet I can grab whatever traits I like later. Lets go for toughness first, We''ll pick that ugly brown vine with the little thin leaves and red poppy like flowers. Decision made! Let''s bud me some legs, then go hunting for rodents, but first, let''s make sure I''m starting the clock on that slow Life Force regen. Merge soul core. That''s a weird feeling. I think I blacked out. It felt kind of like being spun around really fast. I''m glad I can''t throw up, ugh. Now I have 6 soul cores though, one bigger than the others with some dimly glowing wisps swirling about the center. That seems like a good thing, even if I still feel a bit queasy. My maximum life force went up by one, so I guess 2 soul cores that hold one life force each combine in to a single that holds 3. Nice. I need to eat monsters to regain life force, so I''m thinking I might be able to do it with some roots. Who knows what sunlight will do for me, but it should be pretty decent. After a few hours of messing about with growth on those weird brown vines, I manage to make them weave together, yet remain flexible enough to bend on command. They''re strong enough it takes 8 chops to get through a vine cable as big around as my wrist, and considering it took 7 to take off a whole dessicated zombie leg, that''s way tougher than my current ride. Getting them to bend on command is oretty annoying though. I leveled up growth to intermediate from all the practice, but it''s still hard. I build a big woven basket to put my beehive in, and make a large tree sort of thing in the middle to hook it to so it doesn''t shake around. Judging by this basket, new me is going to be really big, and a nice brownish green. Lots of room for hive and other things, we can make a ton of pockets for crystals and such. I put some legs on it and try to stand it up but it doesn''t work very well. Two legs are terrible for balance, and I''m terrified of falling over and crushing my fragile hive with the impact. How about I set my new body up with a massive set of 4 legs like a claw footed bathtub on steroids? I don''t have any eyes on it so "front" and "back" are pretty irrelevant. It''s not very giant robot like, but they all have giant gyroscopes and whatnot to stay balanced. If I want to not get killed I have to make concessions. I make some long arms, but the fingers are hard. In the end I settle for a pile of longish vines that I can wrap around things for a grip. I put my axe in the hand and some of the fingers wrap around the handle multiple times, but the grip is sturdy. I''m gonna need something better later, but for now, it will do. I put some leaves around the rim of the basket at the top and make some leafy shoulders. I''m not sure what sunlight will do for my new body, but I do know I need it. I can grow leaves on command when I have time to rest, but a constant influx of light is probably better than none, and it might increase the time needed between sunlight breaks. Now all I need is some life force to graft flesh, and I know just where to get it. Those bastards tried to get me once but I was unprepared. I''m still unprepared but at least I have surprise on my side. It''s time to hunt, and try to be a little smart about it. First, the bees are way faster than the critters blocking my exploration, so I''ll ask for a volunteer to go figure out how many of them there are. Eliza volunteers immediately, looks like we have a combat junkie in training. Surprisingly the delinquents want to go as well, but they seem a little apprehensive, so I ask them to hang out near the ceiling of the room and all look different ways so we don''t get jumped while Eliza scouts. They seem relieved. The rest of the bees would much rather increase our stores and... the queen is making more bees. Let''s pretend I didn''t see that. Nope, not a thing... 10 A green bill of health Eliza''s report on the disposition of the enemy is extremely concerning. There''s way too many of them. The tunnels go on in all directions, and it''s like a maze. A maze full of ugly mole things with armor plates. There''s no way Mr. Axe and I can take em all out, I lost count there''s so many, and there''s lots of babies. I think they could out reproduce me, given how many of them there are. I need a new plan. I was so baffled, I had to ask Eliza to get a look at what they''re eating. This population density shouldn''t be possible. They''re eating the rock! How the heck? I guess it explains the lack of tailings from the digging. But there''s sand everywhere and I now know where it came from. Grosssssssss!!!!! New plan though, I need a better weapon, and I need it asap. I''ll start work on it after I get lodged in my new body. I need to kill 17 rodents to get myself lodged in my new body, I think. Less if I can merge more Soul Orbs Eliza is a bit bored and upset, I promised a fight and then I sat here watching vines grow. I decide I''m ready so I ask her to find a lone critter, sting it on the rump, and get it to chase her back to me. If a single bee can rouse the whole room to action, I''m doomed anyway, to die under a horde of beasts. They''re busily chewing through the walls so they''ll break in to my little room eventually and I''ll never escape if that happens. My demise is at hand unless I can get some upgrades. I get the delinquency trio to get some good angles so I can get a good view on the enemy when it arrives. There''s Eliza, buzzing her little heart out, and there''s a moleratmadillo on her tail, snapping its jaws, but getting nowhere close. I''m waiting at the next bend in the hall, axe in my single hand, and as it reaches the corner, I link with it and cast psionic scream. I take advantage of its discomfort and disorientation, and after three solid blows, it falls down. After 12, its head is an unrecognizable bloody mass, and I''m pretty sure it''s dead. Huh, that was easier than last time. I guess magic and surprise are overpowered. Eliza goes to gorge herself on a prodigious amount of honey and take a rest, and I begin a bloody dissection. While pulling apart the skull, it occurs to me, plants don''t have eyes. If I want some eyes, I''m going to have to graft them off a living creature. This is going to mess with my plant only plan. Eyeballs on a plant are going to look pretty scary, but I really would like to see. Hmm. This will require work. I don''t have any good ideas, but I have lots of time to think. The mole things don''t have a brain core, I guess, which is kind of lame, and they have a soul core that''s tiny in comparison to the ones from the zombies. It integrates very easily though, and it holds a third of a Lifeforce. I''m going to waste a lot of Lifeforce on merges... And this is going to take a lot more than I thought. I guess I need at most 51 cores, but the good news is that this core is full. When I link with it my life force increases by a third of a point. Yes! The tiny mana crystal by its heart is almost cute. I remember how mana circuits were etched in to the brain crystals, this looks like an unetched brain crystal almost. I wonder if I could etch a spell into it... Since Eliza needs a rest I manage to convince the delinquents to each bring me another moleratmaddillo as I drag the corpse around the corner so it can''t be seen. There''s blood, but I hope it won''t be noticed. Between murders I study the brain crystals and attempt to figure out how to replicate their etching while the bees and I rest and recharge. The adults still are mostly working on collecting nectar, they seem to have decided to pretend I''m not here for now. I don''t blame them, this whole situation is crazy for me, but it''s a huge departure from normal bee life. I bet I seem like a loon. They just want to hang out in the flower room and build more hive. Gossip their bee gossip, and live their bee lives. The fact they are living on borrowed time is difficult to convey. The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement. The fact that I''m taking them in to danger upsets them, and I don''t blame them. But the moleratmadillows will chew their way into the room at some point, and I''d rather be ready. I take a cutting of the vine I liked, drag the corpses back into the sun room, and pile em up with the zombie bodies. The light here is dimmer, but if these bodies keep piling up I won''t be able to fit through the hall. I grow a cutting of the vine on the pile, it''s important to test whether or not this plan will work before I commit too much. The plant grows, and it turns a rusty red. I think it might be stronger too. I learn I have to merge cores with cores that are the same size. I learn not to get complacent, and lose even more of my stump arm. I lose count of the kills, but I end up with 84 small mana crystals when I finally have enough Lifeforce to graft a limb. The hall is so spattered with blood I''ve had to move up to the next corner several times to maintain the element of surprise. I''m out of corners. After merging repeatedly, I have 36 small cores, 20 zombie sized cores, and 6 of the larger merged cores. It''s time. I''m ready. I head in and stand next to my vine body, taking a moment to work up my nerve. Carefully removing some lower ribs, I gently take my body out of the chest of the zombie and place it in the cradling branches of the tree. Deprived of the connection to any soul cores, the zombie falls over lifeless as soon as I leave its hands. I take a mental breath in preparation. I graft the plants. It''s like reawakening from a long sleep. Suddenly I can feel. The feelings are pretty alien, but I''ll take what I can get. The light on my leaves feels so nice, and the drafts in the tunnel push around my leaves in a gentle, pleasant way. Once I get my bearings, it''s time to give myself the ability to move. Flesh Remodel burns up the remainder of my life force, but I manage to make the vines able to expand and contract on command without spellwork, and the heavy bundles of vines that I tried to make approximate muscle fibers soon have my arms flailing about wildly. As soon as I move my new legs I end up butt over beehive and take a tumble, jostling and irritating all the bees. I project soothing thoughts for quite a while, as I slowly attempt to get back up. The design of these legs sucks though. There''s no real knee joint. Despite my attempts to add one, the bend in the leg isn''t very flexible. After a while I gave up on the knees and practiced a new design while sitting in the sun. My life force and mana were regenerating in the light. I''m not sure if it was because I was rooted, or just the sun orb, but I liked it. My life force and mana were both drained by movement, however. The drain was far more affordable than my previous mana drain, but having a drain on my life force when I was low was pretty unaffordable. I ended up standing rooted a long time while I used grow on nearby vines while testing knees. I ended up just making an extra joint, since the vines didn''t appreciate tight pinch points and sharp bends. Soon I was prancing about like a young pony in the snow for the first time. Having a body was nice. Not burning as much mana to move around was nice. Not trying to awkwardly mind control your own body into moving was even better. Feeling exhausted after about ten minutes? Not quite as good. My body still needed lots of work, it seemed. My lifeforce was still low so I decided to go rest and test my evil master plan while basking in the light of the orb. With the aid of grow, I put down roots into the pile of corpses. After a few moments, my lifeforce and mana started to climb. Finally something was starting to go right. Power Systems --- Online Weapons Systems --- Offline Sensors --- Offline Engines --- Online Recycling System --- Online With this step forward, I would be soon be ready to annihilate these vermin. I was bigger, stronger, faster, I could repair injuries, and now I could eat monsters for lifeforce. The thousands of giant rodents were doomed. I hope. 11 Shrubbing shoulders with giants I know I was excited to gain this ability to get life force, but aren''t there too many bodies? I filled up on life force already, and it hasn''t been long at all. I combine soul cores until all of them reach the large size, then I take two of the gently swirling cores and combine them again. If I thought combining the small cores was bad, I was wrong. Can I have that weird swirling nausea back, please. I feel like I''m being turned into spaghetti noodles, but there''s nothing wrong with my body. Is this the side effects I was worried about? It calms down after a bit and I decide to practice magic a bit more while combining mana crystals instead while I wait to see if I ruined my soul or something. Those small mana cores I got from the vicious rodents hold an awful lot of mana. I have a lot of power to work with, so I burn it on lots of nonsensical combinations of mana constructs, fully expecting to fail. I stopped playing with my spark spell after I shocked myself twice while adding in constructs, but I did manage to turn the arc red and cause it to make a weird pulsing noise when I added in a system of 3 constructs I borrowed from the constructs for mana transformation. It sprayed in all directions, including mine, so it wasn''t very useful though. I figured out how to combine the heat spell and the earth shape spell to make interesting shapes out of sand, but it was really expensive, and extremely fragile. After trying 12 times to make a tiny elephant only to have it deform as it cooled, I decided I needed a better skill set before I could make anything with any detail. I was great at making little piles of brown sand turn into deformed lumps of brown sandstone though. If only I had a tiny trebuchet... I could siege tiny castles. I had two decent breakthroughs. First, I discovered a particular mana construct was for storing and releasing mana at a set intensity. It was a little mana capacitor. Second I discovered a little construct that caused a suction in the spell thread. If I put it in the right spot, it would draw mana through the spell on its own, which made it significantly easier to cast spells. Instead of focusing on keeping the mana constructs together while also forcing mana through the spells, I could simply focus on holding a single extra construct and let the spell do its thing. There were a few problems with both constructs, but overall they made life easier. The draw construct sometimes caused backflow: the mana would get pulled the wrong way through the other constructs if they weren''t laid out with the draw in mind, causing a destabilization of the entire spell. The capacitor could overcharge, and the construct would blur and leak mana to all nearby constructs if it got too bad. Getting the draw and capacitance constructs to play together nicely was an exercise in frustration.Stolen content warning: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. With the upgrades in spellwork, and the lack of any imminent soul death or any side effects at all, really, I steeled myself and combined another set of soul cores. The new larger cores looked like snowglobes with glowing green snow randomly swirling about, it was honestly rather mesmerizing. I wondered if the specks were my soul. After crunching another dozen tiny mana cores into 6 larger ones, I was out of lifeforce to absorb. There were only piles of bones left of all the mess I had made. I even absorbed the zombie I had used for transport, turns out he didn''t have the guts for this kind of job. It was time to go hunting again, but this time I could take some larger risks if I was careful. With a careful application of grow spells, I grew a thick vine door to the sun room. The hinges were terrible, but I made a bar reinforcement for the back so I could keep it shut and a vine spear which perfectly fit through several small holes in the door. It wasn''t a great spear, but it would do the job a few times. With earthshape and heat I used all of my mana twice to make a big brick of stone and hung it above the door with some rope and pitons from the dead guy''s bag. A quick heat spell should drop the brick on anything trying to break down the door. I dug a shallow pit in front of it until I hit the stone below to make it harder for the shorter rats to reach the door. You know, I used to kill rats with glue traps at home. A pit full of glue would be a welcome addition to the defenses, but if wishes were glue I''d be high on fumes right now. Oh well, an empty pit will have to do. Maybe I could heat up the bottom of the pit and hold an all you can eat armored rat bake. I think I''ll try that. I''m ready. I head out into the big holey room, ready to lay down the law. Nothing happens though, no moleratmadillows come to kill me like they did before. I can see eyes staring out of the darkness though. ¡°You started it, you overgrown vermin. What are you waiting for, come get some!¡± I shout mentally, sending a telepathic connection to every set of eyes I can see. They shrink back into the darkness, but I hear yipping in the distance, and a deep growl. There''s a loud scratching, and the biggest Moleratmadillow I''ve ever seen climbs out of one of the larger holes in the opposite wall. It''s bigger than a man, covered in scars, and it doesn''t look happy. They must be able to tell I''ve gotten stronger somehow. Either that or they''re waiting in the tunnels to ambush me. This thing clearly wants a fight though, and I''ve never been one to dance around the subject. I ask the bees to evacuate for the battle, and ready my axe. 12 Moss Battle I stare down the giant armored moleratmadillow while tiny armored rodents peer from their holes in the walls, shuffling their feet nervously. A quick psionic connection shows me a hint of fear rather than preparations for an ambush. In fact, I also sense anticipation. It''s like they''re rooting for a sports team. I guess I''m in a mole people colosseum? That explains the aggression. Maybe I should have spared my previous opponents? Was this a huge misunderstanding? I can''t get very much from their thoughts, their minds are too complicated. Am I the bad guy? Well, what''s done is done. It looks like I need to punch the big one a lot, but maybe I''ll ease up and let him live. It would bee good practice anyway, I''m already humming in anticipation. I start advancing, and the big beastie does the same and we exchange a few unfriendly swipes. An uppercut from me goes whistling over its head as it ducks down and goes for a low tackle. Thanks to the power of 4 viney legs I don''t go down, and instead wrap my limbs around and hang on for dear life. Oh dear, thank goodness I don''t really have a back or front, since I don''t really have any eyes and my limbs go either way, or else I''d have to make a joke about reverse cowgirl. Well, I have an audience, let''s give them a show! I hang on tight, and wrap my vine tendrils in all the crevices on the creatures armor, and slap it on the bum with my free hand, and it goes willd, running about and trying to throw me off. I stubbornly hang on while flailing my tendrils in the air! Yeehaw! A few short minutes later, the moleratmadillow is panting heavily. Thank goodness for the sheer quantity of vine tendrils I can make, my grip is really strong, even if they''re a bit weird to use. He falls over on his side and I climb off, victorious! While I was busy playing rodeo, the small moleratmadillows came out of their holes in the walls and have gotten closer. They''re still creeping closer, and there''s a lot of them. I back away, this is making me feel a little concern. Scratch that, this is some some creepy stuff. As I back farther away, I notice they aren''t converging on me at all. They''re going closer to the giant rodent currently heaving breaths on the ground. They''re keeping their distance from me, and on the other side of the rodent ring, one angry looking beast lunges forward, biting down on Mr Biggs''s snout, eliciting a pained squeal and panicked flailing from the larger rodent. Yes, his name is Mr. Biggs now, deal with it. I look on in horror as the tides are unleashed and these vermin pour forth in waves to kill an injured opponent. I was wrong. These things have no honor. After I spent so much effort sparing my opponent, they''re going to tear Mr Biggs to shreds in front of me? I THINK NOT. I rush into the crowd, picking up 2 of these vile creatures and swinging them by the tail like a pair of flails, and I only stop the beating when I feel breaking bones, and only for the moment it takes me to grab another rat-thing. A hatred burns hot in my... my... I guess I don''t know my own anatomy very well, I don''t know what to call it. When I focus on it, I can feel it pulsing, angry, and... coming from my largest soul core? It keeps growing and growing, the intensity of the sensation getting stronger, and with every pulse, I feel stronger. I thought I was mad before, but I was wrong. THIS is real anger, and it''s flowing through me like a wildfire. Rodents are clawing at my legs and biting my basket, but now I find myself simply making barehanded strikes that fling my opponents off and make unpleasant crunching noises. I reach Mr Biggs, and knock a few rodents off his exposed limbs. He''s rolled himself into a ball, managing to keep them off his vitals, but he''s not looking so good. I have a sudden, dumb idea, and get behind him and push him through the crowd like a wrecking ball with one hand, while I smack approaching vermin like they owe me money with the other. It''s hard to steer, but once I get him into the tunnel, we don''t need to, and the tide is bottlenecked by the narrow entrance. One of my legs isn''t working right, and I notice one of the bites left it hanging by a single vine right above the foot. I end up dragging it behind me, and finally reach the door I painstakingly crafted and roll Mr. Biggs through. I stumble through behind him, and smack some stragglers back while the bees enter near the ceiling. They all look quite distressed, I wonder what they''re on about. The queen is doing that limb flail that means she''s really mad at someone who did something dumb and unbeelike. I focus again as I recieve another savage slash to my midsection from another VERMIN. I pick him up and slam his head against the doorframe, and fling him down the hall. I slam the door, and throw both the bars. I fall back against the wall, and my strength fades Skill Learned Rage Spend .25 Life Force per second to channel all of your life energies into your muscles and bones, for a burst in strength. It churns and roils in a nauseating way. The land is shifting beneath me. Angry earth titans stride the surface, scouring the land clean behind them with sweeps of their massive tails. An endless sea of burning sand and molten glass stretches from horizon to horizon, the giant creatures striding the surface occasionally being swallowed back into the earth or vaporized by an errant strand of boiling metal. In the distance, a great black spire pierces a giant opening in the boiling metal sky. It looks ordinary at first glance, but the titans grow smaller and smaller in the distance, and I don''t understand what I''m looking at until a tiny speck begins crossing in front of the tower. It''s another titan, so small in the distance that it looks like an ant. The tower behind it is so massive it takes me a while to understand what I am looking at. Tiny specks fly from the top and disappear into the black. Is this a space elevator? It definitely looks sinister. A spine jutting from the base of the tower begins to glow red, and suddenly I feel like someone is looking at me. I get a really bad feeling and start running. There''s only two bees here with me, Eliza, and one of the more industrious sticks in the mud. I decide on the spot to name him Herman, he seems like a Herman to me. Herman sits on my right shoulder, and Eliza on the left. My, that''s... Sinister! I giggle at the pun and am amazed to find I make noise. Eliza turns to face me and speaks. ¡°Hey, I understood that? Where the Oleander are we? What is this?¡± Herman mutters to himself ¡°Almighty orb of light, protect and preserve us. Though I am dragged down a path that leads to my demise, please deliver me from evil¡± Hey, that''s rude. I''m too occupied to say much though. ¡°I don''t know what''s going on, but I think I should run faster.¡± I shout. The spine in the distance is too bright to look at now, and that feeling of dread grows larger. It''s almost strong enough to make me want to just lie down and suffer. I won''t though. I''ve been mistreating my inhabitants a bit, but it''s my job to protect, lead, and grow the hive. I am certain in that moment that, despite my unwillingness to live a safe life standing by the sun orb, I will do everything I can for those who live within me.This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author''s work. At this moment a giant red spear of energy sprays out from the distant spine, and rips across the landscape, tearing a giant chasm across the land, and I find new momentum as it races towards me. I run like the devil is on my heels, I run like I''ve never run before, but I can''t outrun whatever this is. ¡°Herman, Eliza! Fly you fools!¡± I''m bathed in red fire, and I scream. I see Eliza and Herman in the air, fleeing desperately, but my vision goes red and I''m falling into the earth, screaming all the while as I burn. Then it''s just darkness, quiet, and peace for a long time. Wait a minute, was I dreaming? It felt so real I forgot I was blind in real life. I reach out and form a few psionic tethers and reengage BeeVisionTM. Oh, I''m slumped against the wall next to Mr. Biggs, and that noise is those VERMIN attempting to get in through my beefy wood door. I made it almost 6 inches thick, and I can see claws and teeth poking through. Holy crap.... How long have I been out? Mr. Biggs isn''t bleeding anymore, but there''s a worryingly large puddle of crusty blood around where he''s lying. He''s curled up on his side. I probably had better see if he''s ok, but first, our uninvited guests. A spell shape wraps around the rope hanging above the door, suspending the giant cruddy sandstone block where I left it. I cycle heat, and in a moment, there is a disgusting crunch, some squelching, and the clawing at the door stops. From here all I can see is rock through the hole in the door, and a few bits of flesh hanging off where the abrupt movement of their previous owner peeled them off its snout. A few teeth litter the floor inside the door, and blood splatters line the vines. I reach out with grow and patch the hole in the door, and go take a look at Mr. Biggs. He''s... really not doing very well. I don''t know much about medicine, but I do remember hearing honey has disinfectant properties. I co opt a few bees into helping me smear honey in his wounds, while I try to figure out how to make a bandage out of leaves. After a little trial and error, getting a leaf to curl around a wounded limb and bond to itself, making one contiguous leaf tube like a living cast seems to be the only way to go. It looks good too, green suits Mr. Biggs. I finally get a muzzle looking bandage on his face, since his snout is... mangled and make a little vine shift around the tissue back into a shape resembling a snout. I''d try to stitch it with little vines, but I have no idea what I''m doing. Besides, chicks dig scars. Or something. I''m just trying to feel better about my own incompetence. It doesn''t help that he woke up, and every time I shift his wounds while bandaging him, he makes a pitiful wail. Even if he''s still dangerous, he''s not going anywhere for a while, especially with 6 casts, one for each extremity poking from his shell. We''ve run out of honey after slathering his tail, all of his legs, and his face, but the rodents haven''t returned, so I ask the bees to restock and decide to rest up. Herman and Eliza are still sleeping, and I remember my weird dream. Is it? No... couldn''t be. I might be a little nutty but believing they are trapped in that terrible dream still is ridiculous. Isn''t it? I don''t really need sleep, but we need to recharge, so I root down and deploy some leaves, and get to work merging mana crystals together to make bigger ones, and continue messing about trying to figure out how they are etched. If I can make a big enough attributed core, maybe I can make something properly devastating. I remember the red beam of energy for my dream, then imagine having one of those at my own beck and call and rub my viney hands together as I get to work. 14 Garden the door Scritch scratch Scritch scratch Scritch scratch crunch crunch Would you guys cut it out all ready? I''m trying to research here! With a sigh, I unroot, and move closer to the door. I reroot right in front of it, and move all my leaves about to catch optimal sunlight while I wait. A hole appears in the door again. I grab one of the vine spears I made in preparation for a defensive battle, and as soon as I get an opening, I strike. The spear drives into the rodent''s mouth, and I feel a gooey crunch as it busts into the beasts skull from the inside. The spears are pretty dull but they''re strong and I have brute force on my side. I wrench it free, and Grow the door back to a solid mass. A few strokes of my axe restore the point of the spear to a serviceable sharpness, unfortunately the wood doesn''t hold up very well. That makes this... the 12th, time the door has been breached now. Annoying. I decide it''s not worth the trouble to move back closer to the sun orb. While this research was constantly interrupted, I did gain a few things. I still have a few small mana cores, now I have one really big one. I merged 64 tiny mana cores for this, and it''s about the size of a human fist. It isn''t even fully charged, but I can feel it humming with power already. Also, before I put out my leaves, I checked my life force total, and after I used it all, I checked it again and made a discovery. My life force regeneration increases when I''m soaking up light as well as putting my roots down. It''s not a ton, I only get a life force every 10 minutes or so compared to every hour, but it''s enough to encourage me to use it. Now that I''m out of mana crystal I want to merge though, I''ll probably have to merge more soul cores. It still makes me nervous though. I''m out of life force anyway though, so I decide to try to chat with bees a while in between door breaches. Most of the bees are still a bit upset, and Eliza and Herman are both still sleeping. The delinquents are up and about though, and it''s high time I gave them names too. One of them is always doing complicated maneuvers in the air the older bees deride him for. Honestly I can''t help but be impressed by his flight dexterity, even if he does fly into another bee sometimes because he''s going too fast to stop around blind corners. I think I''ll call him Bob after Bob Burnquist, maybe make him a tiny skateboard later, He seems like he would like that. The second member of the triad seems to like pranking the other bees. It''s pretty hard to prank bees, since they don''t own anything, but Sam is fond of stacking small rocks on other bees while they''re sleeping. I actually sent him feelings of strong negation and worry earlier to convince him to leave Eliza and Herman alone. He was a bit dejected, but he understands, I think. I can''t wait to make him a marker. The third member of the triad, I''ve decided to call her Josephine, seems to be into art. The other bees have been building cells, expanding the hive and making honey, but Josephine is busily decorating the inside of my torso with some wood pulp tribal drawings. She still helps out, but she doesn''t sleep much. Now that there''s so much space for the hive, it will take a long time to reach full capacity and approach the torso walls with the hive''s mass, so I think she has plenty of time to finish. Honestly, I''ve been encouraging her, it looks pretty cool. A little at a time, she fills gaps in the vines with plant pulp and builds some parts higher than others, creating a sort of 3d etching. I wish I was that talented with art. At least I can say I am covered in art instead.Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation. Most of the other bees are too boring to distinguish themselves. They are either too dedicated to work to develop healthy beehaviors, or just stubborn sticks in the mud. None of them are getting names until they show some creativity or something. Sitting here is boring, despite the occasional rodent murder, so I think back to when I tried to tell a story to the delinquents a while back. I''ve gotten better at psionics, and now I realize that I probably spouted a bunch of nonsense. The thoughts have to be framed in a way the recipient mind understands, so if I throw words and things at bees who don''t use that sort of thing, they might understand a little of the emotions leaking off my mind, but they won''t get much of it. I think I have a solution though. I can make a psionic movie! They''re used to seeing things, and I can kind of approximate some sentences in bee dance by now. I''m going to make a full experience movie, with sound, subtitles, the works, and put a little bee interpretive dancer below the bottom of the screen. We''ll find out how smart these bees are. I wonder if they can learn to write? With this goal in mind I suddenly have a lot of clear problems to tackle. How to store a mind movie, for one. How to convey a full immersion experience reliably for another. I think I have some ideas... Let''s ask for a volunteer! Sam is pretty much fed up after attempt number 12 results in a sensory overlap. The sense data for sight bled over into the sound areas of the spell, resulting in a chaotic mess of noise and a messed up visual. I guess it needs more work. I decide to call it for a while, and get up again to stab another rodent and reseal the door. They''re piling up pretty high on the other side, not sure how many I''ve killed but its enough so they almost reach the ceiling. My roots have long since tasted blood in the soil behind the door, now it''s so thick the soil is turning black in patches from the bleed through. I decide to make a hole near the bottom of the door and extend my roots. I''m going to start leaching life force from the bodies and breaking them down. If I can find a few cores in that mess it will be worth it. It''s time to see how big I can make a soul core. Ugh... there''s one merged. That feeling is vile. Blech, it never seems to get any better. It feels like my whole body is disassociating from the other bits of itself, and each piece is trying to crawl away. After a while of doing mergers, I notice that the feeling is actually something invisible in my body wiggling and twisting around. Every merger seems to show me this thing a little clearer, and it''s a mess. There''s holes everywhere, and it''s a patchwork quilt of different weaves. Every time I make a merger, it globs on another piece, which really doesn''t attach itself very well. TO make matters worse, when I add a piece, the whole thing twists about for a few minutes, and if I add one too soon, I can see things start to tear as the twisting becomes even more violent. Every time I do a merger, there''s a little bit of damage, but now that I can see what I am doing, it''s much easier to prevent it. I''ve gained a bit of control over the incoming soul globs, and I use it to fill holes, and extend this strange quilt by adding to the edges. I''ve started letting the moleratmadillos finish clawing through the door so I can kill them and drag them through for more soul orbs, as I''m running low. I don''t bother sealing the hole, they keep coming, but I''m one tree thing plugging a gap a single moleratmadillo wide. If they want to line up to die, so be it. I could use the souls anyway. Every time I merge a larger soul orb, it gets harder to keep my soul quilt thing stable. I''m adding so much soul at a time, that it is causing deformities as I''m having issues controlling that much soul at a time. By the time I reach a soul orb made of 16 tiny orbs, I''m too nervous to advance any farther. Then I get a dumb idea. If I get my soul quilt to shake a bit, and the ends meet for a second while it''s flapping angrily.... and there! I merge another soul orb and add a glob to join the sides of the quilt together. A few more small joins and I have a soul tube! A few more and I have a jar looking thing after I seal up the end. I test it, and it works! I can just pour soul into the jar and it automatically conforms to the shape. Can I handle a larger merger? Let''s find out! I take 2 of my cloudy green 16 orbs and merge them together, pouring soul in to the space I''ve made. It''s difficult and the soul pokes a couple of small holes as it settles in the jar, but I patch them on the fly. These new 32 orbs are really kind of creepy. They''re not translucent anymore, they''re black with green swirls traveling all across their surface. Well, nothing for it besides crossing the line into 64. I''m not dying and I don''t feel terrible, so getting cold feet at this point would be calling past me an idiot. Is past me an idiot? Maybe. Let''s find out. All I know is that if something doesn''t change, I''ll be stuck in here forever. This is a nerve wracking decision, but I jump ahead and do it anyway before I can second guess. I add more to the rim of the jar to make it larger until it resembles a tube more than a jar, and there''s enough free space to fit 4, 16 orbs worth of soul in it, just in case. With a nauseating swirl, I merge and a flood of soul is unleashed. The tube quickly fills up, then soul starts globbing on in random patterns once it runs out of room... Ooops. I have no time to regret as I black out. 15 A Beeturn from somewhere Suddenly I was aware again. But I was back in that same weird dreamland. The boiling metal clouds roiled just like I remembered, and the ground shook slightly with giant footsteps. There was a huge difference though. I could see my soul now, and I could also see little bits of other souls drifting about and flowing towards the tower... And with my new ability to see soul stuff, what a tower it was!The outside was lit up with spell components I had never seen before. They were made out of soulstuff, too! Closer to the tower, the soul stuff lazily drifting towards it turned in to a raging maelstrom. The vortex was like unto a hurricane. And then I noticed. There was a trickle of soulstuff coming out of me! No! That''s mine! I earned that! I refuse to give it up! Despite all the pitiful movement I can inspire in my soulstuff, it''s still escaping. At least it''s polishing off all the lumpy bits that I accidentally added on. Desperate, my brain runs at a breakneck pace as I try to come up with a solution. The tower! It''s sucking away my soulstuff, and it''s doing it with those soul-based spell constructs on it''s surface. I can see about 5/12 of the tower clearly, and I can see that it has 6 sections with the same soul circuitry repeated on them. I can only assume it continues repeating on the far side the same way, so I memorize the pattern and shapes, and do my best to replicate it around my soul jar with the wisps of soul trying to escape my core. It''s like wrestling with a bag of snakes, and I watch helplessly as the streamers coming off my soul join up with the maelstrom. The soulstuff swirls up and enters through the first balcony of the tower, the one with the big spikes on it that shot at me. I get a bad feeling.... and sure enough, the spike nearest me lights up with a vile red light. The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. ¡°Screw you you stupid tower!¡± I scream. I take off running towards the nearest hole I can find. It looks like it might be the trench I got incinerated in last time, but it''s hard to tell. The whole landscape is pretty torn up after all. The ground isn''t molten anymore, so I hop in and try to escape the tower''s line of sight. I dive in and crawl into a deep glassified groove in the pitted surface. Suddenly I hear buzzing. I look around as two bees fly in and hover. They look extremely tired, but I''m glad to see them nonetheless. At least until Herman stars talking. ¡°I''m surprised to see you again, after you got blasted to vapor by that death beam. What sort of place is this anyway, and what kind of trouble are you getting us in now?¡± ¡°Shut it, Herman. If I hadn''t dragged your scrawny thorax out of there you''d have been blasted right along with him.¡± Eliza alights on my shoulder and turns to me. ¡°Hiya boss, nice to see you! You''re not even crisped, how''d you do that?¡± ¡°The light orb protects and provides for it''s flock. By the way, did you happen to bring any food? I think I speak for both of us when I say we''re both quite peckish. Neither of us are feeling very well. This light forsaken land has not even a drop of nectar.¡± Herman alights on my other shoulder and ruffles his wings a few times. Eliza pipes up ¡°While he is a pretentious prig, he''s got a point. I''m famished. If you hadn''t have shown up I''d have started wondering if Herman was edible.¡± ¡°Though the adversary attempts to worm his way into your soul, you must resist! Be strong and have faith, Eliza, for we shall be delivered from this place, and the agent of our deliverance is here.¡± ¡°It was a joke, Herman, quit preaching your crap at me...¡± ¡°Shut it, both of you.¡± I say. ¡°We''ve got bigger problems. Eliza, poke your head up and see if I''m about to get shot with that red beam again for me. Herman, I''m going to use your senses for a moment, I need to see the state of your soul.¡± While I could see my own soul, and bits of unclaimed soul everywhere, I couldn''t actually see other living being''s souls so far. I was pretty sure this was some kind of defense. I could see tiny streamers of soul leaving Herman and Eliza, however, and this left me feeling nervous. They''d been here way longer than I had. At least apparently my condition wasn''t as urgent as I thought. What I saw when I looked inside Herman with his own eyes confirmed my suspicions. I didn''t know how big their souls had been on arriving here, but Herman''s was tiny. Fortunately the siphon was also fairly small, but the situation was looking pretty critical. ¡°The red thing is still glowing, boss. They sent out the bat things again, I think they''re trying to find us.¡± After a quick ponder, I spoke. ¡°All right, do you guys trust me? I can get us out of here, but we have to get shot by that red beam.¡± ¡°Sounds like a terrible idea, but you''re not dead, so I''ll do it.¡± I heard from my left shoulder. ¡°Why didn''t I think of that? The light will protect us. I am prepared.¡± Came from my right. I took a deep breath and hopped out of the trench waving my arms in the air. ¡°Hey, over here!¡± I waved my arms in the air again. I jumped up and down. Eliza piped up ¡°This is taking a long time, boss.¡± Then a spear of light shot out of the tower spike, and I was burning again. 17 Going up in oak WOW! All I can say is WOW! After I finished making my new beehive shaped soul jar and putting my poor spaghetti soul in it, I immediately started feeling better. It''s amazing how good I feel. Of course the first thing I had done was mess about with this new soul thread. My conclusion was that it was AWESOME. Any spell I could make, I could make better by building it out of soul thread. And I could feed mana in like normal, or feed it soul instead for a massive power output. The only problem was, I had to keep a spool of soulthread on hand because after a certain amount of use, any of my spells, including the one making soul thread, got kind of... melty I built 2 more soul thread generators as backups and left them off but ready to start. I repaired the first one I had made, and built all the spells I knew out of soul. I was running out of room in my body, especially with a giant beehive soul jar in the middle. I was pretty sure I could put it in my soul orb somehow, but the black color of the thing along with the violent swirling of the green sparks across the surface of the large one made me really nervous. I shelved that project for later, and figured I''d do a lot of testing first. I don''t need to puree my soul again. After breaking down the list of work to do, my priority list was as follows. 1. Build a cool weapon/spell to cut my way through the moleratmadillos 2. Figure out how to placate the bees who don''t like fighting 3. Optimize this body a bit since it was still pretty awkward to use. Not as bad as the zombie, but still subpar. 4. Figure out what the deal with Mr. Biggs was. Why''s he so big? Is he smart? Scratch Scratch Scratch Scratch Ugh, they''re back again. 5. Learn more about what the spell components I haven''t yet identified do. Scratch Scratch Scratch Scratch 6. Kill all annoying hyperviolent rodents I don''t remember what else I need to do but it''s mostly because of that annoying scratching I take the heat brain core I have, and one of my larger mana cores, and copy the inscriptions that convert regular mana to heat mana with soul outside the crystal, and start filling the larger mana core with angry heat mana. I build a mana based spell output, since I''m sure I''m going to have to redo this a few times. I have almost figured it out at this point, but I need a way to direct heat without blowing myself up. This is a little bit of items 1, 5, and 6 on the list. I''ll finish up the rest when I get back. I''m nearly there in theory, but crossing a line from heating up rocks with mana to actually making a working magic flamethrower is pretty hard. After a few iterations, I finally have something working. I make a spell that has 2 components from the soul siphon spell that I don''t understand yet and two intakes. One intake takes in a massive feed of mana and the other slowly uses a soulthread. The end result is that it sprays out a thin line of green flame 4 feet long. I can maintain the flow for almost 30 seconds with my makeshift heat mana crystal, and it takes a few minutes to charge the crystal back up from my main core. What I need is a magazine of makeshift heat mana crystals to throw out some serious death, but I''m low on crystals. The range isn''t that great, and I''m worried it might explode or something, so I grow a long vine from the rim of my basket that curls up into a roll and uncurls to a length of 4 feet, and grow a big lump of vines around the crystal and carefully move the soul spells and relink them up at the end of my arm. Now I have an extendable flamethrower limb. I couldn''t be happier. It''s time to test it on that annoying moleratmadillow scratching at the door.Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. I carefully retract some vines at the top of the door and unroll my flamethrower limb and poke it through the hole I just made. I get Sam to fly out and hang out on the wall farther down the hall so I can see where I''m pointing my new weapon, and once I get a good alignment, I spark up. Holy shit. The fire literally cut the vermin in half right through the armor. There''s smoke everywhere. The door is on fire. The door is on fire! I unbar the door and swing it inward and start flinging sand at it trying to put it out. I didn''t design these hands for scooping though, just for gripping, and it''s not working very well. Several burning corpses flop inside the door from the pile outside, and another vermin down the hall charges at me, but a concentrated blast reduces it to a crackling and charred rat roast. I shovel sand frantically, but the door is starting to catch and so is the pile of corpses. How? I thought corpses were full of water? Sure a lot of the blood has run out of them, but they shouldn''t be dry enough to burn! The black, greasy smoke is roiling upwards now in great clouds, and I think fast. I don''t have to breathe oxygen but my bees do, and I am vulnerable to fire, being made of wood and wood pulp. This whole room is full of plants and it''s going to catch like a torch. Mr. Biggs is looking quite alarmed. I need to get the hell out. I recall all the bees except Sam, who''s farther down the hall, I don''t want him to go through the smoke twice, after all, then I grab my axe and gently place my messenger bag into my basket next to the beehive and start pulling burning corpses off the pile to clear a way for me. Once I get a few off, there''s enough room for me to squeeze my way through, but there''s no way I''m not getting charred. Flames are starting to catch and come up through the pile and it''s a tight fit. My hands are already charred and leaking clear fluids, but it''s going to get worse the longer I wait. I can''t leave Mr. Biggs here to die though. I use my new psionic soul spell for the first time, and link up with his mind. The new spell works so much better! I rejoice for a minute before I remember I''m on borrowed time. I send some thoughts at him. "Hey, I know we''re not exactly friends, but this place is on fire, and you probably don''t want to stay here." Mr Biggs responds with a deep mental voice "I noticed. I''m not exactly in top condition over here though. Looks like those runts finally got me after all" "Look, you might not be in great shape, but even a three legged dog can limp pretty fast if his life depends on it. I''ll unanchor you from the ground, and loosen your casts so they flex, and you follow as fast as you can if you want to live, got it?" "I guess the only other choice is to burn alive. You son of a bitch, I''m in. This is gonna hurt." "Yeah it is." I steel myself and dive through the pile, scrambling across the burning surface. It takes entirely too long to cross the pile, and my legs and the bottom of my basket are blistered and charred. Sam swoops down and joins the others in the hive as soon as I cross and my vision is limited, so I enlist Josephine to look through one of the larger gaps in my basket so I can see where I''m going. The makeshift heat crystal finishes charging just as I run out of the hallway and into the rodent room just as a now charred Mr. Biggs crawls across the pile. 30 seconds of fire. 30 seconds isn''t a lot, but this fire is hot as hell. I''ll shoot in small bursts to try and get the most out of this, and get my axe ready and try to conserve charge. I''m a roiling ball of anxiety and fear, but I press forward. I already decided I don''t want to die here. I won''t go back on that oath now. Mr. Biggs crawls farther down the hall and I send him a message. "Once you get into the main room, curl up in a ball and hide your face, I''m gonna roll you. No offence but you''re too slow, we won''t live." "I don''t think we''ll live anyway, but ok." "It''s dangerous, but I have a flamethrower. I think we can make it." "I saw that too, that''s the reason we''re running. I have a strong feeling you''re going to set me on fire." I want to retort, but thinking about it, he''s probably right. I already set both of us on fire by proxy. Shit. I enter the room just ahead of Mr. Biggs, and unroll my weapon limb. Black smoke is pouring across the ceiling in here too, and the moleratmadillos are milling about yipping madly. I remember how tough it was to roll Mr. Biggs and fight at the same time last time, and get an idea and start growing myself an extra pair of arms underneath the first. They''ll take some time to mature, but they should come into play soon. I get behind Mr Biggs and start rolling towards the biggest tunnel out of the room. We''ll both fit in there, but I''m worried it''s a dead end. I don''t get to worry long though. We''ve been spotted and we''re getting rushed. A horde arrives, and the axe lifts and falls, a pendulum counting murders. Any time a rodent gets too close to either of us, a short pulse of green flame leaves them squealing and burning, flailing in the sand. It isn''t enough to kill them quick, but I don''t have enough energy for mercy. Every pulse causes nearby vermin to back up, falling over themselves not to be the next to flash broil. About halfway across the room I''ve burned through most of my energy in the crystal, but my second pair of arms finishes growing enough to take over rolling and I speed up significantly. The still living moleratmadillows I burned are not going out. They''re burning and it doesn''t stop. Watching them run would horrify me if I wasn''t so busy trying not to get mauled by their friends. Now this room is starting to fill with greasy smoke too. I''m glad I can''t smell. I swing my axe about, trying to save my last charges as I roll Mr. Biggs with all my might. We''re almost there! I keep forcing mana into the makeshift heat crystal as fast as it will enter. The rodents crowd in and I pulse the fire right as we enter the tunnel. It''s more effective in an enclosed space. As we continue down the tunnel, it gets darker and darker, so I am forced to sweep the tunnel behind and ahead of us with my psionic spell, looking for minds since I can no longer see my targets. Each time a mind pops up in range, it is quickly extinguished in a crackling burst of green light. Soon I''ve left a dozen bodies burning behind us and the moleratmadillows aren''t courageous enough to brave the flames. We roll on, almost 200 feet until suddenly the tunnel opens out into a room. As I roll Mr. Biggs inside the arch, light orbs flicker to life on the ceiling, revealing decrepit looking metal tables across the entire room. There''s a counter set into the far wall with a large empty archway above it. Plates and cutlery are scattered everywhere across the floor. Old and disfigured posters written in what looks like the same language I saw before on the papers from the messenger bag hang on the walls. Many of them have somewhat unnerving images of stylized human eyes drawn on them. Is this a cafeteria? It doesn''t matter, I guess. There''s light, we have some distance on the vermin, and I have some great ready made blockades for the door. I flip up a table and push it against the opening. I slice off one of my fingers with the axe and grow a new finger as well as tie the table to the archway with vines to prevent entry. Three tables later, and I''m satisfied that no one will be able to make it through the door. They might eat rock but I think this metal will give them pause, it''s much harder. I continue growing the vines around the door until I run out of mana and a giant wall of woody material stands between us and the horde though. No way I''m letting them through without a struggle. Exploration can wait. I roll Mr. Biggs to a sandy spot on the floor under the light, and push him onto his side while putting down my roots. "We made it" I sent. I tightened up his casts and made sure he was still breathing before I put down roots and spread my leaves in the light. Finally I got a response. "Wake me when you set the place on fire again. I need some sleep." 17 Going up in oak WOW! It''s time to test it on that annoying moleratmadillow scratching at the door.Support the author by searching for the original publication of this novel. I have a strong feeling you''re going to set me on fire." I can''t find anything wrong with them exactly, but I think they''re both getting bigger. Herman is turning a little greenish also. I''m worried, but I don''t think there''s anything I can do. I finished growing myself some new bark and got enough light in me that I feel pretty good about exploring. Let''s go see what''s in the kitchen, then check out all the other hallways leading out of this place. I''m gonna let Mr. Biggs snore. My goodness, there''s so much dust. Everywhere I go I leave clouds in my wake. The kitchen is kind of interesting. There''s cupboards with food in them, but the cupboards are frozen. After scraping away some ice, I find some rather interesting spell constructs engraved into metal plates set into the walls in the back. The food looks really freezerburnt, so I decide to salvage away. I grab a spatula and pry the plates out and stow them in my bag. But where is the power coming from? There''s lines running from the plates in the back of the cupboards, and I follow them back to a junction box of sorts. The power goes into the floor, but there''s a whole bunch of lones running every which way. I have no doubt they point at good things to loot. After disassembling an oven for its heating spells, grabbing a motive force array from what looks kind of like a kitchenaid mixer, and salvaging a rune plate from a fan and a few dozen from some cupboard lighting, i pack them into my messenger bag and get ready to go. I can sense something about the oven though still. I keep poking at it, and find a latched plate that pops open. There''s a fairly large heat crystal in there! I make some room and add it to my flamethrower. Not sure how much burn time that adds, but it doubles my recharge rate. If I get another two I can probably spew flames every 30 seconds or so. Nice! I also found a bunch of books. I can''t read anyway, so I put them all in a pile along with the posters and the papers from my bag. No point in lugging it all around, I can always come back. Probably. There''s three hallways leading out of the decrepit cafeteria. One of them is lit, so I decide to try that one first. I proceed slowly, with Sam and Josephine scouting ahead. I don''t want a repeat of getting jumped by moleratmadillos unprepared, so it takes me a while to make it to the next room. It''s a... swamp? Why is there a swamp next to the cafeteria? I thought this place would start making sense, but no, it''s just getting weirder. There''s a dryish path heading past some trees out in the water with large mossy beards hanging from their branches. Sam and Josephine hear frogs in the distance, and I get nervous and call them back so I can keep an eye on them. There''s light in here, but it''s fairly dim, and it seems to be coming from everywhere at once. I pass a large log floating in the water next to the path when I see eyes flash open. Shit! That''s not a log! It barrels out of the water at me, and it''s absolutely gigantic! I throw out three of my hands to hold it back while I reach for my axe with the 4th and desperately unfurl my flamethrower limb. I grab hold of the axe as I lose ground, sliding through the mucky soil despite my four legs as the creature bears down on me. It''s jaws snap and take a few of my fingers but it barely grazes me. A swing of the axe bounces off its rough skin.If you come across this story on Amazon, it''s taken without permission from the author. Report it. Finally my flamethrower unrolls fully and I liberally spray the thing with fire. It flinches back and dives into the water. Soon all that''s left is a ring of ripples. Holy shit what was that? It looked a bit like a monitor lizard but it was the size of a van! I''m definitely shaken. Even more so when I look around and see more logs. At least one is slowly drifting my way. I don''t think I even hurt that thing. I''m getting the hell out of here. I pick up and run as fast as I can manage on the damp and slippery ground. Every time I switch from Sam''s view to Josephine''s facing rearward, I can see more lizards drifting closer trying to be sneaky. I make it in the tunnel with plenty of time to spare, but I''m not happy. I take a few moments to regrow some fingers, depleting my stamina a bit more. I decide that room can wait, i''m going to go sit in the sun for a bit and mess with my salvage. I need to build up some stamina and build up my nerves before I check out the next hallway. Plus it''s dark, and I have those lighting spellplates in my bag. I''m sure I can rig something up real quick. After a little work I end up taking the makeshift heat crystal out of my flamethrower limb, and making another limb on the other side where I change it over into a makeshift light crystal and hook up four light plates to it. I still have that heat crystal from the oven hooked to my flamethrower, so I''m not defenseless, but it makes me nervous to reduce my attack power, especially after that. The end result looks kind of like a lantern on a long stick, and it bobs along down the hallway above me as I press into the darkness. Behind me, the lights in the cafeteria flicker a bit and dim. Ominous... I enter an archway at the end of the hall that opens into a large dark room. When I enter, the lights flicker on. Hmmm. Maybe the lights only turn on when someone is there. If the lights are already on, maybe I need to be more careful then. It''s some kind of lecture hall. There''s lots of glassware along the back wall and lots of tools I don''t recognize. Benches arc out from a large lectern and worktable on the right side of the room. I guess this is some sort of defunct school. What kind of school has killer lizards and angry rodents in it though? Louisiana schools maybe? Haha. Also, there''s lots of cabinets! Let''s learn more about the previous residents and look for loot! Let''s see... Dead things in jars.... Gross. Jars full of liquids and powders. They have labels but I cant read them. A cabinet full of books. Looks like there'' s three different books in it but dozens of copies of each. More glassware and some weird tools. Poking around, I think I break one before I decide to leave it alone. This cupboard is locked somehow. That means there''s good stuff in here, right? The door is locked and magically reinforced somehow. But when I open the cupboard on the left that shares a wall with it, I find it''s easy to chop a hole in the cabinet wall there and shine some light through. I get Bob to go get me a good view inside and it''s full of jars of little mana crystals! Now that I know how to make it, it only takes a few minutes to pry a big enough hole in the wall and acquire and combine enough to make two more makeshift heat crystals for my flamethrower. Yes! I mount one in my flamethrower, then I get an idea. I make a spare flamethrower with one crystal that doesn''t need to unfurl and mount it right in the middle of my basket/chest. Having to wait on it to unfurl all the way in the swamp was almost my downfall. I make sure to add a lot of thick plant matter between me and it, just in case, but I feel like it''s good to have a backup just in case regardless. There''s nothing else in the lecture hall I can use yet, but there is another door on the other side. I''m just getting ready to head out and see what lies that way when Eliza finally wakes up! She''s twice as big as the other bees, when did that happen? I get real excited and link up my new psionics soul spell, and she feels more like linking up with Mr. Biggs than the other bees! Tentatively, I send out some words. "Hey! You''re awake! Are you feeling all right?" "What? Oh yes! I''m feeling pretty good! It''s good to be out of that nasty place! Wait, where are we? And how are we talkin''?" "Well, it''s a long story" I send, as I find a bench, unfurl my leaves, and get ready to tell a tale. 21 A sticky subject WHO ALLOWED SPIDERS TO GET THIS BIG! There I was, carefully walking around the edge of this giant jungle room. Listening the birds, and watching the jungle carefully, I edged my way around a giant, funny looking boulder when the entire boulder lifted up and I was overwhelmed by terror. LEGS. SO MANY HAIRY LEGS. I barely have any time to process as I get grabbed, pierced by giant fangs, and dragged into a hole in the ground. I fire my flamethrower belatedly, and manage to set myself, and the spider on fire. The giant trapdoor spider yanks both of us underground with amazing speed. The lid slams above us and suddenly the only sources of light are our own smouldering bodies and the magic lamp-limb I made, though it''s furled up by my basket rim. I am panic punching and kicking everywhere I can reach as I get stabbed by fangs covered in some gross fluids in non vital places when I realize. I don''t feel pain the same way as a plant. Plants don''t have an ability to do anything on their own, so they have no need for a self preservation alarm. Most of me is non vital areas also, the hive is still pretty small in comparison to the big body I built, and the spider''s fangs aren''t penetrating my woody material well, leading to lots of puncture holes but no damage. Its fangs are only sticking about 8 inches into my body, which isn''t quite enough to reach my hive. I''m glad my hive isn''t bigger for once. My panic subsides a bit. It''s still there, but I gain some breathing room to make a rational thought. First, I send away the bees. No point in letting the only vulnerable creatures here get killed while I make my plan. I don''t send them too far, after all, I might fail and need to call on them. I doubt it would do much good, the spider is a bit bigger than I am, but if it comes down to it... No, let''s make a different plan. Fire didn''t seem to hurt it that badly, but I bet all this web is flammable. We''d both cook like soft boiled eggs in here, but maybe I could do it anyway? There''s a few bee larvae in the hive who wouldn''t survive that. Let''s save that for later. Just in case. Agh, those fangs wiggling in the new hole above my leg feel gross. That sensation is disconcerting and I don''t like it. Have a hard right to the knee joint! And another to the eyes! And a kick to the.... whatever that''s called. I don''t think I''m hurting it much, but this is a fight of principle. Also I need more time to think. Plants? I could grow some plants I guess. I don''t think that would be fast enough, plants don''t grow very fast, even assisted by magic, but maybe if I got a nearby tree to donate some extra fluids through a root or something I could be more prepared to survive fire? I know I could seal the trapdoor shut pretty fast, it''s right next to some roots that are already there. I''m not confident that would help, but I''ll keep it in mind. Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. My strongest ability is in psionics. Maybe I can just talk to it? Very aggressive creature though. I form a link. It feels kind of like a bee mind, only there''s at least 3 separate brains working in tandem. Also that vision and the feeling of the legs and hearts pumping from the inside is nauseating. I feel ill. The mind of the thing is like a hurricane. There''s a lot going on but it''s all bent to one purpose. Also I''ve hurt it more than I thought, there is some serious damage to two of the legs and two eyes, and it actually distracts me for a moment as I feel the spider''s pain. ¡°Hey!¡± I mentally shout. ¡°Let me go, you old hairy octopus! You''re starting to annoy me!¡± Surprisingly, the spider pulls back, and I feel wariness coming from it. Suddenly I see the spider''s leg tips twitch as I hear a sputtering whistle. The emotion I feel from it changes to... amusement? I''m being laughed at. It sounds really unpleasant too, like a songbird choking on a penny. A reply comes via the link. ¡°Who are you to make demands of me, little sapling? You''re in my house and I can practically taste your mana already!¡± There''s a lot to unpack here. It doesn''t care that I''m sentient, and it doesn''t want to actually eat me, just eat my mana. Also if this is its house I might have more leverage than I thought. ¡°You haven''t really hurt me yet, but if you do, I will set the entire place on fire. I can make an awful lot of fire, but I didn''t really want to set myself on fire too. I''m starting to think it would be worth it.¡± I don''t even have to lie, it''s true. I feel a shift in emotion back to wariness. ¡°I can be out of here in a flash of legs, and I will wait outside to feast on your charred crystal when the fire burns out.¡± The spider''s mental voice sounds like 4 record scratches coincidentally making speech, and I hate it, but I''m getting somewhere. I raise my vine limb, and mentally shout ¡°Observe!¡± while pointing at the lid and showing off my grow spell. The lid seals shut with writhing roots that moved to block the entryway. I feel actual worry coming from the spider, but the mental voice of the thing is steady as before. ¡°Well? Burn us already, Sapling.¡± ¡°Honestly, I''d rather not. It will take me a long time to heal from such severe burns as will destroy your majestic form.¡± A little flattery never hurt anyone. I continue. ¡°Also you did best me in melee combat, I have much to learn in that area. Since you did teach me a few things, I could offer you a payment in exchange for your tutelage? Perhaps a mana crystal, since you seem to value them?¡± ¡°I''m listening.¡± ¡°How about one of these crystals?¡± I ask, and reach inside my basket to remove a crystal extracted from a moleratmadillow. ¡°Tiny, hardly worth my time.¡± I relax a little. Now that we''ve started haggling over price, we''ve practically agreed I''m going to live through this. ¡°How about this?¡± I ask, and unleash my life force, merging the single crystal with another, nearly tripling its size. I feel greed flash over my one of my opponent''s minds. There''s so much going on in there that it''s hard to say what happened, but I can tell it is pleased. ¡°That''s almost worth my time. Now how will you compensate me for my lost hunting time and injuries?¡± Now we are speaking my language. If it wasn''t for the horror of being locked in a mexican standoff underground with a giant spider, and if I had a face, I''d surely be grinning. After a few minutes more haggling, we settle on a third tier crystal. However what comes next has me flabbergasted. ¡°I''ll only accept this if you come back for some proper tutelage. With appropriate payment of course. It''s been a literal age since I had a proper student, and you''re durable enough to make the cut. Also you are an absolute mess. I''ve never seen anyone so inept at fighting that wasn''t already dead from something or another.¡± Gee, thanks. Now I''m getting insulted by the thing that tried to eat me. Wonderful. Try not to be rude. Try not to be rude.. ¡°If you insist, sir?¡± ¡°I do insist. If you don''t come to me, I''ll come to you. And I believe I''ve learned your weaknesses. But bring me another offering like this, and clean up that mess you made of the roof and I''ll forgive your trespass and beat you until you stop flailing around like a retarded antelope. Perhaps we can get you to improve to the level of a retarded jaguar instead.¡± ¡°That would be... nice. Could we, maybe, train me to fight like a regular animal instead of a retarded one though?¡± ¡°I apologize, but I don''t think you''ve the capacity, Sapling.¡± Lovely. Now I''m being blackmailed into spending some time being physically and mentally abused by a giant spider. Shit. What the hell is wrong with my life. 20 Going out on a rim ---Eliza--- I''m pretty sure Brian is not aware, but the mental link he''s been using to see goes both ways. I''ve been sharing the new concepts, language, and any new secrets I''ve managed to scrounge from Brian''s thoughts with my brethren. The more hours I can make myself useful, the more information I seem to get. Until recently that was a good thing. Learning how little thought he puts into most risky decisions is very concerning. It''s only blind luck he hasn''t killed himself yet. Don''t get me started on that oversized wood louse. Even now, the woodlouse is rambling on, though I don''t believe we can trust a word that comes out of its mouth. ¡°... and so the story says the moon was made using the power of the Archons, those with powers above mortal men, so they would have a place to watch over the world and intervene if the inevitable truly came to pass. The Archons built cities on its surface, and vast underground complexes. It was a great accomplishment. They even brought mortals to its surface to tour their grand palaces. This all came with an agenda of course. They built schools across the land to train people in the ways of magic so they could become Archons. The leaders of the Archons all desperately wanted recruits, as they knew what was coming, but the six leaders grew in power, influence and greed, and slowly split their numbers into factions. The faction under the Grand Vizier, The Condors, clashed with the forces of General Tacivi, who called themselves The Red Banner, over many different disagreements in policy concerning mortals and the use of the power the Archons wielded. Eventually the other factions ended up dragged into the squabble, and the conflict escalated to a war. No one was ready when The Breach occurred. In fact, it turned out to be a side effect of an experimental weapon developed by The Pale Deer. Considering most believe the predicted destruction was actually the foreseen calamity the Archons banded together to prevent, it''s quite ironic. Ah, give me a moment to eat and catch my breath, there''s still a lot to tell.¡± Ah, what drivel. The wood louse has been talking for almost an hour, and said almost nothing useful. Brian thinks it knows secrets of magic, but for some reason, he is more than happy to let it ramble about inconsequential knowledge. How will this aid our struggle? I know from Brian''s thoughts that he is resting and building up more soul, mana, and lifeforce, but he''s also genuinely interested in this ¡°Lore¡±. Honestly I don''t understand. I have grown extremely bored, and Brian is entirely distracted. If anything useful comes up I can probably skim Brian''s thoughts for it later. It''s a good time to go hunting. If that sojourn into the dreamlike wastes we experienced taught me anything, it''s that I am too weak. After the tower gave up on incinerating us, it took all my focus and will to keep myself and Herman safe from the hunters it sent to destroy us. Death came so close I could taste it in the air. I never want to taste that again. A hint now and then adds some spice to life, but that terror and helplessness... I refuse. A long flight with several stops to rest leads me to the swamp. As I thought, the giant lizards completely ignore me. There is other prey here though, and I''m ready to hunt. ---Brian--- This is really interesting. It''s almost too much, I need to condense it down a bit or I''ll never remember it all. Let''s see, while Grimal is taking his breather, I''ll go through and see if I can commit this to memory, I have a strong feeling it will come in handy. Apparently this whole planet was built by some super powerful mage, as I understand it, as a place to raise soldiers for an upcoming war he foresaw off in the distant future. The only problem is, the squabbling factions developed and used some experimental weapon that actually started the war by letting some kind of otherworldly nasties in. They''re called mistweavers. I''m not really clear on the details, Grimal got a little too technical, and he doesn''t like interruptions. The place we''re currently in used to be a school belonging to the Ghost Cats faction. Honestly these faction names remind me of school mascots or something. Anyway, after the war broke out, the teachers of the school shunted the whole entire school into a pocket dimension they kept around to breed and hunt monsters in. It all got jumbled together, which is probably why there''s a swamp next to the cafeteria. It''s now a cross between a massive underground maze and a school. Grimal is one of the old students. I''m really eager to hear the rest of the story, but I think he''s fallen asleep. I''ll let him rest a while, he''s pretty old and a bit heavily injured. I''ll bring him some of those black pebbles he seems to like munching on when I come back, too. I need an explanation for those smaller versions of him, what the heck that weird blasted wasteland with the black tower was, and... well, a lot really, but I''m the one who made him start with the history of the planet, that one''s on me. I can be patient. In the mean time, I''ve filled up my life force again, and there''s a lot of flat ground in the school sections. I wonder if I can make wheels out of wood? Let''s experiment! My first few wooden wheels are not very good. The wheel surface itself is easy, it''s the axle that''s the issue. I cant seem to make a decent axle out of wood, it can''t handle the friction or the strain and they wear absurdly quickly. Also it really hurts. Fortunately, there''s bolts holding together the dish carts in the kitchen, so I steal all of them and melt and bend pieces of sheet metal from the old stove into crude sleeve bearings.
Since I don''t want to have to run around with wheels on my feet, that sounds awkward, I make a total of 16 sleeve bearings, 4 of which are longer than the others for the wheels. It takes me a few tries, but I settle on arranging them in a rhombus with the point at the bottom, with a pair of pseudo-muscles to extend and retract the wheels. I need to make the entire arrangement flexible only at the joints and the muscles strong enough to support me. I also need to rework one of the sleeve bearings, as it rubs too much under heavy weight, but the end result is worth it! Using my fairly long viney toes to propel myself up to speed looks really creepy, but I don''t care, I''m fast now! I''m burning ground at a breakneck pace! This is a lot of fun! Wow, there''s a lot of obstacles in this cafeteria, I forgot how much random dross was lying on the ground. Oh, shit, I forgot to make brakes! Steer! Steer! *Crash!* *Bang* *Crunch* Man, I really showed that table who''s boss. And the wall too. The hive didn''t appreciate the jostling though and I''ve scored my limbs up pretty thoroughly. It''s a testament to how tired Grimal is that he literally slept right through it though. I spend the next few hours calming down bees, directing repairs on the hive, and forcing my bark heal up properly instead of scarring itself. The jostling convinced one of the baby bees to crawl out of his cell early though, and I''ve got to say, he''s somehow cute and ugly at the same time. I have a few adults set up a larger cell with little footholds so he doesn''t get jostled too much while he finishes maturing, because after adding some little vine thumbs and fabricating some crude stone brake pads for them to hold, I''m ready to see what''s on the end of that tunnel! ---Eliza--- *chew chew chew* *chew chew chew* I''ve been thinking about it for a while, but I don''t have room to put cores like Brian. All my body space is being used by my organs. I''ve been watching the creatures in this swamp kill each other for a while though, and they all seem to dig out the mana crystal first then eat them before they eat the rest of the body. I''m not really sure why, but I''m tired of being weak and they''re all still alive. But why are these crystals so hard to chew? My mandibles hurt and I haven''t even managed to break any off yet. *chew chew chew* *chew chew chew* Ah, there''s a fragment. *crunch* Foxglove! I can''t believe it! This is the stuff! I can feel power coursing through me, and I''m instantly strong enough to crush the crystal in my jaws and eat more. Within seconds, it''s gone, but I want more! More! MORE! Blood glistens in an appealing manner on my carapace, and I pause for a moment to admire how the light glistens crimson of my legs. The moment passes, and soon I climb out of the bloody crater I''ve made in the chest of a frog and start looking around for new prey. The frog''s single remaining eye stares out into the fog as its swollen and lacerated legs twitch feebly even after death. Brian *Bssssoooooooooooom!* *PSHHHHHHHHHHHHH* After a while traveling down the long hallway going off the cafeteria, I sped up. I passed a number of side passages along the way, but at this point, I''m traveling extremely fast. The wheels are making a loud buzzing sound, and it''s a good thing I greased the axles up with some old cooking oil before I left, because it''s starting to smoke off. That might be a fault of the oil quality and the shoddy bearings though. This is extremely dangerous, but I''m having the time of my life. Unfortunately, all things must pass, and after another minute or so, I come to a screeching halt as I see brighter light ahead. I never thought I''d need to use STAB braking after the advent of ABS, but I guess I was wrong. Stopping so fast tears up my wheels, looks like I''m walking back. I''m not exactly ready to sit down for 20 minutes in hostile territory growing a new set. Proceeding slowly, I enter the lit up portion of the hallway and spy a doorway ahead, silouetted in light. There''s strange but faint noises coming from that direction. After approaching slowly and silently, I lean around the corner. It''s a jungle! Cool! I even see a bird! It might be dangerous but I''ve always liked jungles. Plus, I''m a plant chimera now, maybe I can get a little stronger if I''m cautious! This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source. 22 Too many problems, not enough Thyme Well. That was harrowing. Unpleasant too. I''ve lost a wheel somewhere so I can''t even roll back. I''m definitely not going to try and go back for it, nor check any of these tempting side corridors. My recent brush with death and the long walk has me feeling disconnected. I can''t really feel anything right now, I can''t focus, and oly those moments replay in my head. If I had lingered longer in the fight, I''m sure it would have been my demise. That thing was smart, strong, and looking back, I''m certain it was toying with me. I need a bigger gun. A bigger gun... Not just that but a better body too. I don''t even know where to start. Let''s ask Grimal. He''s probably awake by now. With my goals engraved in my heart, I limp forward on my damaged legs. The walk to the cafeteria is long and the bees are silent. Perhaps they can sense my mood. Perhaps it''s just their mood. I don''t want to feel like this again. I need a bigger gun. I need a bigger gun. What to do... What to do... Let''s practice Heat on this long walk. I managed to crudely melt together some sand before. Maybe I can make some decent metal. It''s going to take a lot of work. My last melted mass was full of holes and mostly glass slag. I don''t know if I can do it, but I need a bigger gun. My stamina begins to flag, so I root myself, unfurl my leaves, and begin to see if I can accurately cut round holes in the wall. My light limb feeds my leaves a little in this dark hallway at a cost of mana, and I regain a little mana from the soil and light. I''ll run out eventually, but I have a lot of mana, and I can feed my spells with soul thread if I run low. Given how long I rolled down that hallway, I''m going to be a while returning. I need a bigger gun... Where the hell is Eliza anyway? I haven''t seen her in a while.Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation. ---Eliza--- I can see my own organs. THis is understandably worrying, but I''ve tested my new crystalline exoskeleton in battle, and it''s far stronger than my previous chitin. But I glow in the dark, a soft blue light, and I can see my own organs now. It''s unnerving, but after eating so many frog mana cores, its inevitable that there would be some sort of change. The benefits outweigh the negatives though, because I have grown larger, stronger, I have become more durable, and I can use magic. Seeing my organs makes me really uncomfortable though. I feel vulnerable. Trying out Brian''s spell for the first time, I have grown a small hollow in a tree near the entrance, and I have been stuffing soul cores inside it for later. I can''t use those, so I might as well save them for Brian. Maybe if I give him a gift he will be less likely to die. Speaking of souls and death, I think I''d like to see if I can make that weird soul thread generator he made. I know he thinks I couldn''t have survived it, but I''m stronger now, and the patch he put on my soul is fraying into loose threads as it recovers anyway. I think I can replicate his work with these scraps. If I survive, I''ll grow in strength. And with a few more kills, I know I can survive. ---A few hours later--- ---????--- Tul Drazzak was perplexed and worried. Energy from generator 2 was dropping. Considering it was one of only 4 power crystals he held controlling interest in, this concerned him greatly. The magethread output from the crystal had dropped by twenty percent a few days ago, dropped again a day later, and he had nervously waited for any change. Change had occurred again just now. An additional reduction in output by ten percent along with a steady drop of nearly a percentage point a day. This was a disaster. What would the shareholders think? This needed to be remedied immediately, and with all due haste. The investors could not know. Perhaps the livestock had died? More livestock could be purchased silently through his off network holdings. Perhaps a host of Hartan? Their reproduction was swift but they had weak bodies and souls. No, something was killing his livestock. He needed something small, ferocious, adept at hiding, and not vulnerable to starvation. What about the Urgor? He had never used them in this generator yet, according to the records. In fact, the records said that this generator had not been manufactured by the Mistweavers, but looted in the War of Conquest. There was no record of a survey team ever sent inside. It was possible that the metallic ores favored by the Urgor as a food source would actually still be intact. He would send 100 Urgor inside from one of his other generators, no need to make a purchase just yet. If they also died, he would try water adapted life or sunlight adapted life. One of them would take root. The shareholders would never know as long as he fudged the numbers a bit. A small excursion in his shuttle with an extractor, and some instruments for basic energy readings to confirm his hypotheses would sort everything out. He wriggled his tentacles nervously as he gathered tools and prepared to commit fraud. ---Brian--- I finally managed a clean, accurate hole cut into the wall. The lines are straight, the melt was clean. The wall looks like swiss cheese though. It''s been a while and I was running low on mana anyway. My legs are a bit better and my holes are naturally healing, which is nice. I didn''t realize they could do that. The bees have gotten over the shock of nearly dying and are now complaining about the lack of work and flowers nearby. I''ve recovered a bit from my shock at nearly becoming spider bait. I think I might be able to take some pieces of sheet metal and cut useful holes in them now. There''s no better time than now to resume my trek. With the aid of clean cuts, there''s not much I can actually make by itself, but I''m pretty sure a similar time investment plus a hammer and anvil will mean I can forge weld a little. I''ve heard it''s stronger than a regular weld when done right, and I''ve seen it done, so I know approximately what to do. I was also told it was really hard, and I don''t even know what metals or alloys those scraps are made of. Hmm. What can I build with just cutting and spells? Wait, why am I thinking of metal when there''s plenty of rock? I only have an axe, and it''s annoying to use because it gets stuck in flesh, and way too light for these monstrous arms. Also I have 4 arms and only one axe. I don''t know if I have the control or knowhow to temper mysterious metals, so I doubt I could make a decent replacement out of cafeteria benches and old stove parts. I should see if I can use those rune plates I scavenged from the kitchen, too. Maybe I''ll get an idea. What if I could cut out a pair of big stone clubs? Primitive, but it would get the job done in a big way. I could beef up my upper arms and hit like a truck. Possibly literally. A 40 lb club might be way more effective than a 10 lb axe, and it would never get stuck. I probably need a spear too in case I get charged again, like literally everything has done so far. Wait, another primitive weapon was the crossbow. I could make it entirely out of wood. Why don''t I already have one? Why don''t I have 4, fully loaded and hanging from my waist? They might not be great but they''re better than not having a crossbow. Since my skills are too crude for making any decent weapons with metal, I will attempt to make myself metal bones instead. It should increase the weight of my limbs, increase support, and increase my relilience. It will be good practice that I can hopefully build upon to make other things later. Just a few bones though, and I''m skipping the hands and feet, there''s enough support there already. I have a plan, and it''s solid. I''m not going to bow to any giant lizards. I''m not going to let a giant scary spider push me around! I''m going to work. Fuck that guy. 23 I woodnt believe it if I hadnt seen it. ---Eliza--- I have made a terrible mistake. The entire swamp is in chaos. I''m desperate, and perched on a nearby branch, but I don''t think I can leave by the door. I''m much bigger than before, and I glow. Not very conducive to stealth. There''s a giant mass of those giant lizards climbing out of the water and engaging in combat. One such lizard, lunging from the water, receives a bone crushing blow to the top of its head, driving it into the mud. I hear the crunching of the poor lizard''s spine and skull from here, and the crushed remnants of its teeth are no longer in its mouth. I would describe it as flattened. The culprit is a giant tree. A giant tree I hid soul cores in. An uppercut with a misshapen branch sends another giant lizard flying up into the air and crashing back into the water. It doesn''t rise again. Setting up my soul thread generator just as Brian did took a lot out of me, I worried the whole time since I can''t see soul nearly as well as he, but I managed it in the end. Currently I am struggling to repatch my soul, since I used almost all the material Brian donated to keep me alive. I am doing quite well, but completely vulnerable in a nearby tree. Thank the Sun Orb I hadn''t perched in THAT tree. Massive clublike branches swing in every direction, a maelstrom of crushing power. The lizards hides are too strong, and withstand the blows, but the bones and organs beneath are turned to pulp before my eyes. Why did I have to stash those in the tree right next to the door? But wait, all this death means opportunity! Also trees don''t have eyes. I just have to wait until the tree is done flailing about, then I can sneak in and steal some really big mana cores. Maybe it will be grateful that I have awakened it? I might be able to able to talk to it now that I have magic. I''m absolutely sure I can''t kill it, and neither can Brian. Maybe that will change after I eat some of those lizard''s crystals, but I doubt it. Brian might be able to set it on fire and run away, but not if I can''t warn him there''s a giant angry tree right inside the door. This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there. OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH, that had to hurt! A lizard got through the hail of blows, and grabbed a branch in its jaws. The branch snapped, and left a sharp point, and the tree flailed harder! The lizard went in for another bite, and the sharp point of the branch went right in that hissing maw, lifted the whole creature up by its jaws, then impaled the lizard fully by smashing it into the ground. Repeatedly. The body count is increasing. The tree seems panicked. It probably has never been injured before. This is my chance. Let''s see, a link has this funny bit here, this one there, and a few squiggles... and done. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" "Hello?" "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" "Hello?" "AAAAH?" "Yes, I made you a while ago, but it seems you are under attack. Would you like help with that?" "Help?" "Yes, I can help you see what''s attacking you. I can also help with the attackers to some degree. If I do though, you have to promise not to hurt me." "See?" "Ah, yes, you''ve never seen before. One moment." "AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!" "Yes, yes, it''s very useful. You see that brown wiggling thing? That''s you. Wiggle one branch at a time and you can get a feel for where they are." "Ah!" "You see that black thing down there coming towards you? Smash it!" "Smash!" "Oh My Honeysuckle. You can stop now, it''s dead." "Smash!" "Or I guess you can hit it until it''s literally buried underground. That mud is awfully red. You know, I think we''re going to be great friends." "AAAAAAAAH!" ---Brian--- "Do you know any really big spiders?" Grimal shifts about a bit. "I hope not. The old athletics director was a real piece of work, and she was a seriously big spider. Used to run the combat training, had a fondness for maiming slow students. I swear the Chancellor hired her to scare the students into running faster." "Ugh... I met her then. And she took some kind of special interest. Said she wants me to come back and train, but I''m really rather doubtful." "I highly recommend not returning." Grimal shifted again. "My wounds itch... Do you have another of those black rock I can chew on, maybe it will distract me." "Here. And she said she''d hunt me down if I didn''t come back." "Ah, I guess there''s no need to tell you the rest of that story. You''re as good as dust." I paused, digesting that. "We can hold off story telling for later. I don''t know much about magic, and I think you do. Could you teach me a few things? Maybe even the odds a little? If I''m not ready to face her again, I don''t think I want to go back, so she''ll probably show up here eventually." "You''re supposed to ask nicely before blackmailing someone. You little chert!" "I''ve saved your spherical hide twice now, and that is what I''m going to do, it''s not blackmail if it''s the truth, is it? I need your help and I''m on a deadline... literally. Help me out or I''ll have to do my best and run away. We can save storytime for later." "I''m not a great luminary by any means, but I can teach you a few things, I guess. I don''t think I''ll be able to teach you enough to beat Deodora, but I can try. If we live, our slate is clean though. This kind of knowledge is valuable." "You still owe me the rest of the story though. "Fine, I''ll finish the damn story. Would you like to continue wasting time, or would you like to put some work into surviving?" "Can I take option three and go home and eat a cheeseburger?" "I don''t know, can you?" "Probably not, lets get started." "Listen up, because I''m not gonna repeat myself." I settled in and began to listen, a strange rythmic thumping heard in the background. What the hell is that noise? 24 Weeding between the lines "So what you''re telling me is that I''m an idiot." "Not precisely, this stuff is pretty complicated after all. Can''t believe you missed something so obvious though." Grimal almost grumbled the last part. I sigh. The spell components are pretty difficult to figure out I guess. To think, though, I had actually been making my mana visible with one. Mana was apparently naturally hard to see, although its owner could see it better than others. Two of the spell components I had been using in mana links were actually lighting up my mana so it was more visible. Apparently I hadn''t actually tried making one without either of them involved. Apparently they''re used as a training aid and a mana stabilizer. It makes it easier to show your teacher what you''re doing with mana, but it increases the cost of spells to use them. It was going to be annoying to remember to make mana links differently, but removing them helped me stretch my mana pool 10% farther. Slow and steady wins the race. I need any improvement. Give me more, Grimal! I pulled a brain core out of my chest cavity while I was thinking about the implications. "I''ve been trying, but I haven''t figured out how to engrave cores like this. Do you know the secret?" "Naw, we used to just pay the lower tier Archons to do it. Some people would enter indentured service for a set period of time in exchange for getting a mana crystal engraved. The hard part is growing yourself a new one, it''s very painful and difficult. They were always recruiting for the squabbles between factions, but they needed mundane help too, and kept their secret pretty well to make sure they always had it. Supposedly it was something only they could do." *Thump* "What about these rune plate things I found in the oven? don''t they work on the same principles?" "Yeah, they do. They are a bit different though. In a mana crystal, the mana flowing through the engravings strengthens them and makes flow more consistent. In rune plates, mana will eventually destroy them. The ones like these are made of a special alloy that lasts a fairly long time, but you can make a rune plate out of anything really, it just tends to stop working pretty fast. One use runeplates made out of paper used to be pretty popular." That gives me an idea. Vine runeplates? Investigate later, question more now.Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. *Thump* *Thump* *Distant crashing sounds* I''d like to know what''s making those noises, but I don''t want to get reduced to wood pulp. I''m going to continue ignoring them and hope they go away. I''m getting pretty on edge though. This place is punishing me for being curious though. Don''t investigate, Brian. Leave it alone, Brian. If it comes over here, deal with it then. Until then it''s not my problem. Not my problem. *Thump* Convincing myself not to go look isn''t working very well. Quick, let''s talk with Grimal more and distract myself. "Oh, also, what''s the deal with the sun orb and all the little baby versions of you? I think I should see if I can go get the sun orb, I''d like a better source of light I don''t have to power, but I''ll have to get through that room I found you in, might be nice to know what I''m up against." "Well, I don''t know what sun orb you''re talking about, but there''s a ritual circle nearby you can use to make clones of yourself. The teachers used to use it to populate the monster rooms with creatures to kill. It takes a really long time for creatures made that way to become sentient, but I was hoping I could gain a few allies once they awakened. Needed some help to fight off the rockworms. Turns out I''m an asshole though, didn''t work out. The stronger ones awakened, but they teamed up to push me around. Had to keep making more or the stronger ones started getting aggressive because they didn''t have anyone to fight. It wouldn''t surprise me at all to learn they had already killed each other without me there making more." Good news, I guess. Makes me look at Grimal a little differently though. Back on topic. "I just call it the sun orb. It''s a big, bright floating ball that looks like the sun, it had a bunch of zombies marching around it, and I think it was telling them to DEFEND really loudly." "Ah, one of the defense sparks is still online? Those things are pretty useful. They used to all link together in a big network, and the headmaster could add unawakened creatures to the network, and given certain stimuli they could mobilize a small army of mindless creatures to put out fires, perform emergency labor, and act as cannon fodder in a fight. We could use them to communicate at a distance also, circulate announcements, they''re generally very useful in the hands of a decent Psionic who knows the command languages." It''s a computer. They have a magic computer. Holy shit. Well, they''re about to have had a magic computer, because I''m going to steal it. I have no idea how to program it, but I might be able to figure it out. At the very least, free light, all the time. I can get rid of this lamp limb, and replace it with something more useful. I wonder if it can run doom? *Thump* Ah, no, please stop with the creepy noises, thank you. "Ah, I see. I only have a few more questi..." "You''ve been asking questions for a while now. My voice is gong out and I''m tired. I''m going to cast some basic spells, for you then go back to sleep. Watch carefully." "Candle" a little flame appears. I scoff internally. I already figured out how to do that. When I look at the actual spell, I freeze. This looks nothing like mine at all. This might be useful. "Stoneshape" Wait, I was still trying to remember the other one! A little lump bulges up from the ground and forms a pillow "Snowball" Oh god, I''m not going to remember any of this, am I? An icy sphere manifests, and hits me in the knee. You punk! "Sunder" Hey, that actually looks kind of like my heat spell. Not quite like the flamethrower one. A rock on the ground heats up and literally explodes! That is absolutely cool. Grimal lays down on his earthen pillow and I hear snoring in moments. Impressive! Lets go play around and see how much of that I can remember. Then I''m going to build some weapons and clean out the Mini-Grimal room. *Thump* *Thump* Or maybe I need to check and see what that noise is first. 25 Meeting with the branch manager Imagine my surprise, investigating loud thumping noises coming from nearby only to stumble across this scene: A tree flails about wildly, swinging its massive branches like massive clubs. At its feet is a massive puddle of muddy, rust red water. As I watch it picks up a giant lizard corpse, and drives it into the ground like a nail. It takes 12 blows due to how the corpse squishes unpleasantly instead of disappearing into the earth. 12 earth shaking blows. Now I know the source of the thumping, and I slowly back towards the door and get ready to see if I can erect a barricade of plant matter. That is, until a connection forms between me and an airborne creature. I''ve never seen anything like it. It''s a massive glowing crystal bee. I''d compare its mass with that of a human head. But it speaks out loud instead of telepathically. In english too? I can''t hear, but I pick up the words through Herman, sitting on my lamp. "Azzz you can see, I''ve been buzy. You and I both had lots of problemzzzz, so I decided to solve a few ovvv them. Also, here izzz my new friend!" I can see the internal organs of the bee and its mouthparts flexing in rather disturbing ways. It''s unsettling. I think I know who this is, but I''m not confident enough to put away my flamethrower. "We talked, and he decided he wanted to be named Blackjack. Let''s have a full round ovvvv introductionzzz. Brian, meet Blackjack. Also gazzze upon the glory that is the new Elizzzaa." I can''t help but notice the 4 inch long crysalline stinger she now bears flexing menacingly as she talks. A drop of glowing blue venom drips from the end. I''m immediately brought out of my reverie when Blackjack begins waving wildly and starts yelling. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Eliza twitches her antennae. "I''m sorry, I''ve been attempting to teach him words, but he seems to enjoy yelling instead. That was supposed to be something like ''Nice to meet you'' if I''m reading this right. I have a few gifts for you, courtesy of Blackjack here."Enjoying this book? Seek out the original to ensure the author gets credit. "I have to admit to feeling a little overwhelmed. I thought I was going to get my bark tanned again, honestly. FInding you here and a friendly face.. wait no he doesn''t have a face... a friend is kind of blowing my mind. At least I hope we can be friends, Blackjack." "AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!" "...OK. Yeah, just lay it all on me Eliza, this is weird." "Ah, yes. Well I''ve solved a few of our problems. Now you can come in the swamp without getting mobbed by giant lizards, for one. I''m pretty sure Blackjack killed them all. We saved you 5 soul cores, also. The rest are either buried in the mud or I gave them to Blackjack." "Very nice." "Also, I am now strong enough to participate in real combat. You needn''t worry about my safety any longer. And of course, the most important part. Blackjack has agreed to house and protect the bees who do not wish to risk their lives in battle. He can''t leave the room because he''s too big, but the lighting in here is decent, there''s lots of flowering plants, and none will dare bother Blackjack." "Yes, I''m certain no one will mess with Blackjack." I say, eyeing his giant swinging limbs and subtly shifting backwards. "Well, what do you think?" "You''ve obviously put a lot of thought and work into this. How could I turn you down? Let''s do it." "Excellent! I''ll direct the hive. You''re not the most social creature, but I''m more than capable of covering for you." A few hours later, most of the bees resided within a hollow towards the top of Blackjack''s trunk. The beginnings of another hive. "Excellent. If we travel only with volunteerzzz, there will be no need to worry about thoze who do not wish to fight. Blackjack will care for them, he izz a mighty tree." Blackjack''s leaves rustle and I swear I can feel a blush through the link. Awkward.... "Well I don''t think he''ll fit through the door or the halls, so he''ll have to stay here. If the workers are staying here, how will we keep the others fed?" "That''z what you''re concerned about? We can come back and reztock, I know you''ve heard of jarzz, go find a container in the kitchen for them to fill up while we''re gone." "Oh, yeah. That one''s pretty easy. Well if we''re making a military unit, it needs a cool name. Also who''s going to keep things running smooth here?" A mental transmission reaches out to me, and I see Herman, in his green fuzzy glory sitting on a tree branch watching. I thought he was a leaf! "I can watch the flock. The light here is strong, worry not. They will grow and prosper in the light." Well that''s one problem solved. Herman is kinda weird but I think I can trust him. Names though. What should we call the unit? "What about the First Volunteer Drone Wing?" "Isn''t that a little sexist? I''m not a Drone, after all." "It was just a dumb joke. Let''s keep it simple. First, who''s volunteering?" Three bees alight next to Eliza. It''s the delinquents. They must have already discussed this at some point, because that was fast. Wait, no, a link confirms their willingness is fairly new. I sense some... admiration for Eliza, and some... desire to... not be bored? Is this a normal reason to join the military? Whatever. I guess I won''t turn down recruits who think Eliza is cool. Honestly Eliza is kind of cool. "All right, no need to shake things up I guess. There''s four of you, so I guess you can be Flight Alpha. Eliza is your... Um... Captain. She can be Captain Eliza, and her orders are absolute." "Sounds good" "Ok" I can already tell this is going to be a shitshow... But it''s my shitshow so I will own it. I look forward, making plans. Maybe I''m going to live after all. Suddenly a flickering purple portal opens and a giant metallic centipede falls out. It rolls around disoriented for a bit, then burrows into the earth with such speed that its entire length disappears in under two seconds. It was as big around as a human head and at least ten feet long. "Uh, Did anyone else see that?" 26 Ferning curve I find myself staring down into a deep hole, listening to a distant chewing. A dozen or so bees, one Eliza (not sure she counts as a bee anymore) and a giant tree are all attempting to get a look. Blackjack doesn''t have eyes, but he''s very eager. I say the words everyone''s thinking. Well, everyone except Blackjack. "What the fuck is that? How did it dig a hole so fast?" "No idea." Buzzes Eliza. "But we should kll it in case it''s dangerous." "How do you propose we do that? It''s huge, and it is definitely out of reach now. I don''t have any way to tunnel, and I absolutely couldn''t dig that fast even if I could. I think it might have been made of metal too..." "It''ll have to come up sometime. When it does, we''ll kill it." Eliza seems very confident. "What if it doesn''t?" "If it never comes up, then it doesn''t matter. We can ignore it then. But I don''t think that will be the case." "Hmm. That sounds right." I send. "I need to go build some better weapons and work on my magic. It''ll be a bit boring. How about you and Blackjack see if you can dig it up or something, and send someone to let me know if you guys need a hand pulping it. I''m going to wander around here for a while, then head back to the cafeteria. I''ve got something I''ve been wanting to try for a while." I pause for a second. "Then I''m going to go and clean out those moleratmadillows and liberate that glowing orb back where we started, if you want to come." "Yes, do invvvite me to the zzzlaughter. I would be happy to aid you." Not really comforting, but I''ll take all the help I can get. All right, Bob, Sam and Josephine are coming with me and eveyone else is staying with Blackjack for the moment. I can get behind that. The delinquents will be relatively safe, since I''m not planning anything violent. If I''m going to ascend a weight class and get stronger, I think I need to better use the abilities I have. For example, I''m a Chimera, but I haven''t actually done anything cool with that besides add more body parts. If I go back and look at my lifeforce menu

There''s an ability I never used that I probably should have been using. Now that my lifeforce is full and I have nothing to spend it on, let''s see what Examine Blueprint does. Let''s try it on this viney plant I made my body out of first, get some idea what it does... Oh my. This is way too much data.

I scroll through, pressing More Info repeatedly, and there''s 26 pages. 26! PAGES! A lot of it doesn''t mean anything without context. Cytokinesis has a value of 5. Is that good? I have no idea. Some of it I don''t even know what the words mean. It''s been ages since I was in school after all. After paging through all the info on the plant, I conclude that Examine Blueprint might be useful for a Botanist, but it''s going to take way too much effort for me to get anything useful out of it. Let''s use a better method instead. Experimentation. There''s quite a bit of plant life here in the swamp. I see a plant with gray flowers on it, some kind of parasitic vine clinging to a tree, lots of lichens and mosses, and a few other kinds of plants. I find a few samples of a nice fern, and graft it up near where I tend to grow my leaves. I figure it''s more energy efficient to save leaves than to grow new ones every time, and fern leaves roll up when prompted. We''ll see if these really work better though with some use. I take a hard look at the parasitic vine, and decide there''s no real way to see if it''s better than what I have than to try it out. I grow a piece of vine into a replica of my left lower arm, and stick it on below while I do some tests. How far can I throw this rock with each arm? Hmm. How well does it bend? Hmmmmmm. How well do they resist damage? This parasitic vine sucks. It heals really easy, but it''s inferior in evey other way that I care about. I rip the test arm free and toss it on the ground. I have another idea. Leaves get in the way too much while I''m moving around, so I''m mostly bare woody vines. If I graft some moss on the surface, I should be able to harvest more light without hindering myself. Let''s try it on my arm first. That... actually feels quite nice. Let''s do it. It''s moss time. Annnnnd now! Presenting the Jolly Green Giant! Or something like that. This is actually quite nice, I''m glad I thought of it. I think that sums up what I can do here, lets go back to the cafeteria and work on weapons. *Rustle* I pause. Where''s that noise coming from? It stopped. I move again and I hear more rustling. Oh, I forgot to roll up the fern leaves. They''re pretty noisy. I might have to rethink those later. I enter the cafeteria, and there''s holes in the floor. I see two giant metal centipedes eating one of the metal tables, and Grimal is nowhere to be seen. You''re telling me there''s more of these things? 27 Swimming against the currant Nooooo! They can''t have eaten Grimal! I still need to pick his brain some more! Oh, wait, there he is, he chewed a hole in the wall right behind where he was sleeping. He must think he''s safe because they can''t fit inside the hole. He must not have seen them dig yet, the only thing keeping him safe is their profound interest in the table they''re eating. I slowly follow the wall across to where Grimal is hiding, careful to move in a smooth manner to not attract attention. Most creatures react to sudden movement, after all. Finally I reach Grimal''s hidey hole. "Psst! Grimal, you healed up enough to walk a little yet? We need to get out of here." I get a grumbled reply. "I''ll manage. What''s the plan?" "The plan is to get out of here before they run out of tables to munch, then you and me are going to put together some kind of weapon that can kill them. You haven''t seen these guys dig, this hidey hole will last exactly 2 seconds till they start chewing on your feet, and I can''t kill them. We can go hole up in one of the rooms in the hallway down to the jungle, and I think I''ll open the barricade to your old place and see if the rest of the Tiny Grimal army can buy us some time. Maybe they''ll even win, in which case Eliza can go clean house afterwards." "Come on, enough chitchat, let''s move!" The nice thing about not having a voice is that I don''t have to whisper. We begin the painstakingly slow trek out of the room as I grab up my bag and the miscellaneous papers I left for Grimal to read. A hole opens in the barricade as we pass, and it grows larger the closer we get to safety. No need for chaos while we are still here, after all. ---------------------- "So if you link this mana construct to that one, it overloads and explodes?" "Yes, it''s really dangerous, one of the things you need to avoid. Wait, stop that!" "You just said it explodes. That sounds like exactly what we need right now. If I make these temporary mana constructs with soulthread and link it to one of these mana crystals... and put more soulthread in the crystal to temporarily convert it to a fire crystal like the temporary fire crystal I had for my flamethrower at one point... then leave the circuit broken like so... Does it explode immediately, or is there a delay? You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author. "That''s so wasteful... I''m horrified to have taken part in this." "Grimal. How long is the delay before it explodes?" "Oh, a few seconds, maybe a minute or two." "All right, so we need three things. We need to figure out how to make the time consistent till the explosion. We need to see if we can make it impact triggered, it would be nice to have exploding crossbow bolts. And we need to figure out how to make bigger explosions!" "Why don''t you use a mana battery rune instead of mana cores?" ..... Brain.exe is experiencing abnormal activity and must be shut down. If you experience this problem again, please contact your system administrators. Rebooting... 3% 12% 34% 55% 74% 99% 99% 99% 99% ....... "Mana Battery rune?" "Yeah, you use it in all your spells, it looks like this." He scrawls it in the rock with a claw. That squiggly thing.... was this useful the whole time? The key to godlike power was hiding in plain sight? How did I miss this? "Tell me Grimal, do you know what I mean when I say the word Logic?" ........ Let''s go back to the drawing board, I can do better. ........... Unfortunately, the mana battery squiggle is not rechargable. It also is way slower at transferring mana than a mana crystal. This means that the explosions I can manage with them are weak at best. But I managed to get some info out of Grimal about some Logic after I explained a bit. With some knowledge of how to make a few gates, I make an array which can continuously provide mana when hooked to multiple mana batteries. It switches to the next mana battery in line once the signal cuts. This means I can set up a spell and make it last as long as I want, and just leave. I''m no longer necessary. In short, after a bit of work, I now have lots of one use flamethrowers and 2 magic crystal grenades. I can''t believe I thought I''d be making clubs. Instead, Grimal suggests I just make bigger arms. Clubbing something is just punching with extra steps, and he happens to notice that I have 4 arms, after all. I grow my lower arms up until the point I start to have problems with balance, then cut it back a bit. I might not have figured out the crossbow yet, but I have a bandolier of rocks that spew fire in two directions at once after throwing. They spin around like flaming wheels of death, and I love them. And I made a pile of "Magic wands". I guess they might literally be magic wands, but they''re just sticks that spew fire from the end. I''ve got a hunch that the grenades are the best part of the whole thing though. I left blast marks with a radius of three feet when I was testing. There was even a small crater in the stone floor. That''s a lot of damage. I have a hunch, also, that they won''t quite work like regular grenades. A lot of creatures seem rather dumb, after all. .......... I trudge back to the cafeteria, a grenade in one hand and a Flaming Death Wheel in the other. I have each of them on the verge of being primed as I peer into the room, trying to get a good view. The rodents are being massacred. They''re pouring into the room, yipping the whole while, and frantically chewing on the metallic armor of the giant centipedes but they''re not really making a lot of progress chewing through the metal plating. There''s teethmarks, but no penetration. Meanwhile, the centipedes are flailing wildly, crushing rodents in their massive jaws, and under their roiling bodies. I prime and hurl one of the mana crystal grenades. It''s a rather large mana crystal, one from one of the lizards in the swamp. Everything fighting pauses, and one of the centipedes dives for the crystal and swallows it. Yes! They''re as dumb as I thought! 28 On its last legs I wait with trembling fern leaves as I watch the centipedes. It only takes four seconds to detonate a magic crystal grenade, but with the nervousness and anticipation, it feels like an eternity. Maybe I should "Bake" the grenade a little, like people did in call of duty? Ah, I forgot about call of duty until now! Are more of my memories returning? KABLAMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smoke and fire blasts out of... both ends of the giant steel centipede. As I watch it writhe, I can only think one thing. Is this the fabled "Taco Bell Syndrome"? Wait, it''s still flailing around. It''s making a horrible screeching too... Don''t tell me it''s going to live! It rolled back on its legs... and it''s running around. That doesn''t look like something that''s just eaten a grenade. It''s obviously horrifically wounded, there''s some kind of fluid drooling out of it, and the mouthparts appear to be damaged, and who knows how much internal damage has been inflicted, and its still running around. Oh crud, it''s coming right for me! Run! I begin chucking flaming death wheels at the creature as I run away. Aside from seeing the metallic plating on the creature heat up and start boiling off the splatters of its own bodily fluids, it also starts screeching even louder. I think I made it even madder. Is this where I die? It gains on me rapidly. Think! Think! What do I do? Maybe if I put down my wheels again and start spewing fire, I can gain some thrust? The floor is flat enough here, and I did fix the busted bearing... As an added bonus I''ll be spraying fire in the centipedes eyes, and although it''s not yet close enough to burn, I won''t have to worry about that for long. This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings. Changing from a flat out run to dropping my wheels and getting my speed back up costs me almost my whole lead, and I''ve got a giant monster right on my heels. A magic stick in each hand and my flamethrower limb extended, I light all of them off at the same time. It''s glorious! I speed up significantly and the centipede slows a little as the fluids dripping from its mouth down its body burst into steam! I barely manage to keep a lead on the creature as I fly ahead on my sweet robo-heelies, flames blasting into the creature''s face the whole while. The centipede slows more, and my flamethrower sticks begin to run out of charge. I frantically pump more power int my flamethrower limb with the mana crystal in it. My reserves begin to drain faster, but the flame coming out of my limb gets larger, just as my magic wands run out of charge and I toss them, still smoking, at the centipede in a desperate attempt to slow it down a little more. My mana drains rapidly. My power dwindles by the moment. I''m afraid I''m going to run out, when suddenly the centipede crashes to the floor, plowing up a massive trench in the rock. It takes me several minutes to stop at the speed I''ve built up, but I trudge back, retracting my wheels on the slight uphill grade. I direct a quick thought to the delinquents, who''ve been hanging on for dear life the whole time. "Wow, that was close! You guys were watching the whole time, got any suggestions as to how we can do that better? I''d rather not do that again!" Bob chimes in "I think you should leave the giant centipedes alone. But you could have used your other grenade I guess." Oh, I forgot about it in my panic. "Feel free to add a few suggestions like that next time we''re about to die, I forgot I had it.... And yes, we''re definitely leaving them alone for now." "Ah, sure." Not very talkative, is he. I reach the giant centipede corpse, and I can''t fit through the hallway around it. It probably has a nice crystal but I wasn''t planning on spending a few hours digging through the thing to get it. I guess it''s dissection time though. *squelch* *pop* *crunch* I''m not making it very far, so I pry off one of its damaged metal mandibles and use that to dig under the plates and peel them off. I mostly find more plates. Where''s all the gooey bits? After a bit more digging I come to a conclusion. This thing is made of lots of metallic plates and some kind of metallic muscle/tendon hybrid. I have no idea how this could possibly work. It''s kind of intriguing! Finally I find it. The thing has a meaty-centered spine leading to a big heavily armored pocket at the top of its head, and apparently that''s where it keeps all of its organs besides the digestive ones, which were mostly destroyed by the grenade. It appears I killed it by boiling its brain, and whatever else these weird chunky organs are. After a little digging, I find a mana crystal by its heart and boy is it massive. Way bigger than mine, I''m ready to celebrate, when I dig out a big soul core. It''s larger than mine, and it swirls in a violent green tornado. I stare into it''s depths as I realize I''ve been underutilizing my life force. I need to figure out how to shape metal magically, otherwise I''ll never achieve this kind of metallic perfection. Most of this centipede is intact.... What if.... Gathering my thoughts and will, I realize a way forward. It won''t be ideal, but I desperately need to increase my combat power without getting myself stuck somewhere. I gather my focus and begin pulling out the metallic tendons and replacing them with vines. 29 Id be in the dark without you! I wiggle my legs around. This is going to take some getting used to. I don''t have any way to repair any damage to all of these plates, so after I burned away all the soft tissue and replaced it all with wood, I replaced all the metal tendons with vines also. I''m not sure how long I''ll be able to get some use out of this body, so I built a new vine body designed for ultimate speed, with only barely enough room for my cores and hive, the wheels, and the flamethrower for thrust. There''s no arms, and it looks like a medium sized dog when I don''t fold up the legs. I shove it in the space where the organs of the centipede used to be, and leave it an escape hatch into the digestive organ area, and another escape hatch in the front and rear, I link it to the centipede body with easily severable vines, and feel a lot more secure in the fact I can easily bail if I get into trouble. My vines are not nearly as good as the metallic tendons previously moving the beast about, but I don''t need a mouth or digestive organs, so I can compress the metal plates a bit and reduce the size and weight of the body by a fair amount, so I think I can go almost as fast as it could. And this thing is fast. The mechanical advantage provided by all of these interlocking metal plates and cams is amazing. A small amount of force in the right places can throw around even the enormous weight of this creature''s armor. I am amazed by the efficiency! Is it natural, or was it designed? I feel like answering that question is key to my future. I''m a bit disturbed by the feeling that this is what my power was made for. Am I going to be stealing bodies often? I hope not, this is both creepy and gross. The best part, which makes up for all the flaws, is that this centipede possesses metallic eyes which integrate into my senses quite easily. They appear to see in some other spectrum of light, since I can''t see color, but I can no longer tell the difference between light and dark, so it balances out. Getting used to all the legs is going to be a pain though. I grow fern leaves all down the spine of my new centipede form, mount my flamethrower-limb between the eyes, and detach both the big beefy vine arms I painstakingly crafted recently, and the smaller original vine arms I made, and think about where to put them. I want arms, but I don''t want to look dumb. After a while, I give up, and mount both the smaller arms under my chin, and one beefy arm on each side. I don''t fit through the hallway very well with them out, but the vine arms are very flexible and can lay flat when not in use.Enjoying the story? Show your support by reading it on the official site. Satisfied, I turn around, chewing at the rock with surprising ease, and stumble crookedly down the hallway, wobbling back and forth as I headed back to the cafeteria. ................. I''ve arrived, and the battle is still raging, if you can call it that. The centipede is missing more metal than it was before, but it has killed angry rodents by the score. Bob sends me a quick message. "You''re not used to this, yet, and the centipede is ignoring you. Didn''t you want to go get the Sun Orb?" He''s got a point. As much as I want to grab another massive soul orb and mana core, I haven''t even added the others to my system yet. I''m not sure what will happen if I add a soul to my body that''s stronger than mine, but given what happened when I was born in the zombie, I can guess that I wouldn''t like it. With a little reluctance, mostly thinking about all those rodent cores the centipede has painstakingly harvested for me, I line up next to the barricade and begin digging through the wall. ........... A great while and some rodent chewing later, I make it to the place where it all began. Once I reach the Sun Orb, I''m struck by how odd it looks in my new vision. It only glows faintly, and I can see weird paths across its surface resembling very fine circuitry. After studying it for a while, I''m a bit less sure of what I''m about to do. What if it doesn''t like being stolen? Does it have defenses? I''ve come this far, might as well follow through, but a little caution might be in order. I make a psionic connection to the, what did Grimal call it? Defense core? I make a psionic connection to the Defense core, and it loudly shouts at me. "DEFEND" "Ey, stop that! You startled me!" A quieter voice follows. "Defend?" "Um, sure, let''s defend. Want to kill some monsters?" "Command not found. Help?" "Help?" "Commands available: Defend: Unrestricted Attack: Administrator only Construct: Unrestricted Manufacture: Administrator only To see more commands, please use the command "login"and enter your credentials." I know Grimal described this like a computer but this is a little eerie. Let''s try the old standby. "Login" "Username?" "admin" "Password?" "password" "credentials invalid." Aww, damn, it was worth a try. Suddenly I recieve another transmission from the core. "defend?" It''s very quiet and there''s a definite plaintive air to it. It definitely sounds like a question. Is this thing alive? Holy Crow, the poor thing. How bored is it, after sitting here for who knows how long? And I killed its zombies, that had to have made a bad situation even worse. I get a sour feeling. I was the bad guy here. If what this little dude wants to do is defend, then we''ll defend, I can spare a little time to help clean up some monsters if the little dude will come along. I muster up all of my enthusiasm, and send it to the core, along with a single word. "Defend!" I can feel the happiness roll off of it as it responds "DEFEND!" "DEFEND!" "DEFEND!" "DEFEND!" "DEFEND!" I rear up onto my hind legs until I reach the height of the Defense Core. "We defend!" I say, as I open my new jaws and swallow the core into the rather large empty chamber in my middle. It briefly gets nervous but settles down as it realizes I''m not going to do anything. Together we go back into the lair of Moleratmadillows to finish the job. I gently wrap the core inside me with leaves and hold it snug next to my escape hatch, where I can have my tiny escape body grab it on the way out if I need to bail. I click my razor sharp metal mandibles together, and prepare for combat. 30 Winning the Sweep Steaks I have no idea what kind of metal these mandibles are made out of, but it''s really great. It''s sharper than a razor, bisecting enemies and rocks with ease. This is the kind of magic bullshit I can get behind. As I''m ripping a rodent in half, I fling part of it across the room as part of a swing to get my mandibles on another, which quickly passes out from blood loss as I slice it to ribbons. I swing my massive, ridiculous looking arms and paste another with a single swing. The only reason they''re giving that other centipede a hard time is because it only has 1 weapon and there''s several hundred of them. It can only kill them so fast. The rodents must be reading my mind, because a pack of around 20 charges out of a larger tunnel on my left, trying to take me off guard. I leap back by pushing with all of my legs at once like an antelope, hosing the group down with fire as I defy gravity, flying backwards through the air. They''re dead before I hit the ground. These creatures are no longer a challenge. If it wasn''t for Sunny being so excited, I''d be bored. This new body is using a ridiculous amount of mana though, and thanks to sunny, that''s being mitigated a little. All the leaves around that sweet light source of his have tripled my mana regen. Unfortunately, I''m using somewhere between 10 and 15 times more than before. Looks like every upgrade comes with new problems. At least these problems are far less serious than potentially getting killed by giant rats. I retreat back to the original room I first woke up in, and block the door while I ponder solutions. I''m not sure if I can improve my mana regen but if I can figure out a better/faster way to retrieve mana cores, I can improve my longevity in combat. My lifeforce fills back up in under two minutes, and I estimate at least 5 until I fill back up on mana, so I have plenty of room to make modifications. What if I make use of all that empty space where the digestive bits used to be. I could kill a rodent, "swallow" it, then dig through for its core and dump it out the back all while still in combat! "Defend!" Ah, yes, my new passenger. "Rest first, then defend. I''m tired."Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on the original website. Ah yes, I''m supposed to be helping beef up the three bees that are accompanying me too. Let''s crush up this little rodent mana crystal, since apparently that makes bees get super big. "You guys wanted to be like Eliza, right? Give this a try. I suspect it will take a lot, but this should get you started on the path." I feel a twitch of gratitude. I wish I wasn''t so easily distracted, I keep forgetting about important stuff like this. Speaking of, let''s begin remodeling the gut cavity a bit. I''m going to take a little inspiration from the human body and line the whole thing with roots that wave, pushing everything in one direction like the cilia in the lungs. I''ll make a bunch of roots on the ceiling with sharp tips for digging out the cores and finishing off survivors. And some extra pockets on the sides to store all these cores, and I think I''m about ready to test it out. Back to the slaughter. I head back into the main tunnel room, and can''t help but notice the rodents are getting sparser. They''re not all gone, but I don''t think it will be long until they start to dwindle away. Fine with me! Scooping dead rodents into my maw, the cilia conveyor works great, but the stabbing implements, not so much. I end up having to make an additional kind of limb for picking up the soul orbs, because it''s like trying to pick up a marble with chopsticks. Also the rodents keep getting stuck on the back hatch, so I have to make some adjustments to the rear as well. The whole time I''m doing this, I''m busily killing creatures of course. Once I get the system working, I start shoving them into my maw as fast as I can manage. There''s an addtional positive effect I didn''t foresee also! The root cilia end up absolutely slathered in blood in no time at all, and since they''re roots, they end up drawing in a little nutrients and mana from the raw material. A bit gruesome, but I won''t say no to any help I can get. I add more stabbing roots inside the harvesting chamber, if I perforate the corpses more, I should get more blood out, right? I spend another hour mindlessly killing rodents, and suddenly, the tide finally ends. I still see some hiding, but they''re not the fighting type I guess. As long as they aren''t hostile, I''ll leave them alone. Maybe Grimal could use some friends. As I finish scooping up the dead rodents, blood dripping from my maw all down my metallic underbelly, a trail of clotted blood and shredded bodyparts following behind, it never occurs to me that they''re the ones smart enough to be terrified. I''ve gotten a handle on my new body, and it''s time to see what that other centipede outside is up to. ............... Turns out the other centipede is gone. It left a few tables with large bite chunks taken out of them, and a large pile of corpses behind. I can clearly see it ate most of them, but it must have gotten full. Well if you''re not going to eat that.... Don''t mind if I do! I end up having to make more space for mana crystals and soul orbs, between the other centipede and I, it''s likely I retrieved almost 800 cores of each kind. I begin leveraging my lifeforce to see if I can increase the size of my cores enough so I feel safe adding the larger centipede cores to my reserves A few minutes later, I''m off to go see Eliza and ask for advice before I go see if I can give that asshole spider a piece of my mind. Maybe it''s time to remake my armory a little too. I need more grenades...... 31 Who watches the watchers? Eleven... Plink. Twelve... Plink That''s probably enough grenades. Eliza had a good point about the spider. Grimal is afraid of the spider. Grimal knows more than we do. It didn''t show off any weird powers, and everything here has weird powers. Therefore, I shouldn''t underestimate the huge spider. I need a perfect plan. I''ll delay a bit longer on that front Eliza is not a big fan of the giant centipedes. Her hunt for the one was completely unsuccessful and I''m pretty sure she hates that. I almost got clobbered by Blackjack, but after much screaming, she agreed that exploring the hallways and rooms on the way to the swamp was probably the best next step, just in case we can pick up more secrets and trinkets. She''s planning and plotting how to get rid of more centipedes, but I need to get stronger. Any amount of power is useful, I need every edge I can get in this weird place. I''ve still been talking to Sunny, even though his vocabulary is a bit small. Every time he sees someone new, he asks me to "Defend?" He makes a little sad noise every time I tell him someone''s a friend. He doesn''t ask again for the same person, though, so he has a good memory. Is it wrong that he''s making me feel slightly guilty for NOT killing people? I don''t want to make the poor sphere sad... This is messed up. ................. Heading down the halls and exploring the old classrooms is rather eerie. Every place I arrive at, there''s signs this was once a nice place to be. And then there''s the Antelope. It''s not really an antelope, but it kind of looks like one. It''s pitch black with 4 straight horns pointing up, and it''s incredibly fast. I can barely see it move. This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it. As I lumber around, chewing on doorways to fit my new bulk inside while exploring, I didn''t find much. I went into a classroom, rummaging through a cabinet when I first noticed it. A pair of eyes caught the reflected light of one of the light inscriptions I recovered from my old body. I had gone back to get them after realizing I DID actually need those unless I wanted to mount Sunny to my forehead and look even sillier. I reached out with psionics, but got no response, and my lights weren''t that bright. I saw a vague outline, then heard a wooshing sound as a black blur exited through the door. Ever since then it''s been following me, just outside the range of my light. I can see its reflective eyes. I brought Sunny out and managed to get a look at it a few times, but in the dark I need the extra mana regen from the light to keep me moving, so I had to put him away. I can''t tell if it means me harm or not, and it is way faster than me... This reminds me of a survival horror game. I hope the Antelope is friendly, but I have grenades and wands ready if its not. I have found some interesting things, but I''m reluctant to spend time figuring out what they are or do while being watched by a creepy black antelope, so I grow a few storage containers in my gut and just start shoving whatever looks interesting or useful in my mouth. If I get more space, I need a bookshelf in here at some point. I don''t plan to be illiterate forever, and there''s so much knowledge here. With the intention of stashing them for later, I take books, papers, inscription plates, esoteric looking tools and ingredients, and then I find the motherlode. There''s an armory. There''s all sorts of things in here I recognize: swords, armor, staffs, and the like. However, there''s a large number of things in here that don''t look like they were made for hands at all. Still more things look kind of familiar, but I have no idea what they do, for instance, I find something that looks remarkably like a magitech walkman, It''s with the weapons, so I don''t think it is, however. A lot of it looks to be made of wood, like these are practice items, but the real treasure is the inscriptions. I have no idea what a lot of these do! There''s a bunch I do recognize, but a lot of those have mana constructs attached that I don''t recognize! If I can figure this out, I''ll gain another edge. With that in mind, I grab everything I can and shove it into my maw, then start digging to see if I can lose my antelope stalker. If I fold my legs up and take tiny steps, it won''t be able to fit in the tunnel, since I am shorter than an antelope, especially with those horns. .................. It''s still following. I don''t know how, but I had a feeling I was being watched, and turned around in the tunnel with great difficulty to alleviate my worries. My worries were not alleviated when I spotted eyes out in the darkness. I quickly dug back to the surface, since the tunnel was apparently pointless, then took off running back to base. I had to stop for an extended rest due to depleting my mana by running so hard, and while I rested, it stayed just outside my light. Staring... How did it fit in the tunnel? Why is it here? What does it want? I have no idea and that scares me a lot. Fortunately I don''t have to worry for too long. I reach the semi-lit area on the border of the cafeteria, and begin growing a vine barricade up ahead. I leave enough room for me to pass through, and once I do, I close the hallway up behind me. For good measure, I spend entirely too long adding extra thickness to the blockade. That should do it. Now I can go study my loot in peace. Let''s see if Grimal has any insight. 32 Once more, with soul Going to see Grimal, he seems a bit healthier, even though his bandages bled through a bit from being so active lately. I think he''s nervous about the centipedes, because he''s chewed a set of clawholds into the wall in a sort of ladder, and he made himself a nice little cubby in the ceiling. Climbing up a ladder as a big centipede is hard, but mostly due to the weird balance required. The extra legs make it easier than I expected though. I psionically announce my presence as I head up the ladder. "Grimal! If you''re awake, I''m coming up to ask you questions! Also I''m a centipede now!" What I didn''t realize, is there''s cool stuff up here in the ceiling! Wires made of some bluish metal, some odd machines, I think it''s related to the light system though, so I don''t poke at it. I don''t want to be in the dark, especially after my trip through the old classrooms, so I pick an empty area nearby and gouge out some room for me to coil up and show off my treasures. "All right, what weird questions do you want to ask now? You''re an interestin- GAH!" "Calm down, Grimal, I''m a centipede now." "You''re... You just decided to turn into a centipede, is that it? Wanted to scare old Grimal half to death? How did you even get up here?" "Well, I killed a centipede, but I almost died, so I thought about it, and if you can''t beat em, join em! Right? I climbed up the ladder." "You just... climbed up the ladder. You''re telling me they can all do that and my ladder is useless?" "It''s not useless! It''s really cool! I never knew this was up here. Also if you like, we can make a one use flamethrower array at the top of the ladder. It wasn''t a fast climb, and if you can get the centipede in the head long enough, they''ll cook inside. Maybe set up 10 or 12 flamethrowers pointing down the ladder, and serve up some centipede BBQ!" "If you could help me get that set up, I would really appreciate it. It''s hard to sleep knowing those things are out there lurking." I had better not mention the antelope. He wouldn''t like that at all. "Sure, let''s get you set up. Then I got some cool loot to ask you about from the old classrooms." "Ah, very good. Maybe with enough of the old lab equipment we can figure out how to get rid of those things." He might be right. Sunny seems to think so. On hearing that, he shouts "Defend!"If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. "Who was that?" Grimal swivels his head about, looking for an intruder. "Oh, you remember how we were talking about getting the defense core? That''s the defense core. I call him Sunny, and he really gets excited about defense sometimes. Here, you wanna see?" I move some plates aside and roll Sunny out of my storage space with a vine, uncurling the fern leaves covering him, but still keeping a grip so I won''t drop him. That would be rude. Sunny, meet Grimal! Grimal, this is Sunny. Sunny immediately pipes up. "Defend?" he asks. "No, Grimal is a friend." Sunny makes his sad noise. "Don''t worry Sunny, we''ll track down more invaders soon." "Defend!" "Ah, very nice, but I can''t see anything since Sunny is so bright. If you could put him away?" Ah, I see. My weird vision must be pretty good then, since I can still see. I wrap him back up, and we get to work. Let''s see. Let''s just add the flamethrowers into the ladder and around the hole in the ceiling to Grimal''s hidey hole. Then we''ll put the triggers next to where Grimal sleeps, and link them in two groups. The ladder flamethrowers and the ceiling flamethrowers. Then we''ll start adding mana batteries and filling them up. How about some more? Ah, I''m running out... Unless... I''ve been burning lifeforce this whole time to assemble crystals and soul orbs into their larger counterparts. Let''s take the next step and move from a size 64 orb to a 128 orb, size up my mana crystal, then go grab that centipede''s orb and crystal where I stashed them. I combine soul orbs with a little trepidation, but I don''t feel the nausea that I felt before. Instead, I''m instantly present in a realm with a black sky, and green glowing winds swirling above. I''m in a human shape, which feels unfamiliar now, floating on my back in a black sea. I watch the swirling green and black sky for what seems like ages, until I see something move out of the corner of my eye. I turn over in the water and look down, only to see a sea of drowning moleratmadillows reaching for the surface. Oh.... I know these are supposed to be soul orbs, but I didn''t think it was this kind of soul. Off in the distance, I see a spark of green light rise from the deeps and join the swirling clouds of green above. I look closer, and see it again. There''s a figure down there chopping up moleratmadillows. Every time he swings, another green light leaves the depths, but some of it swirls and gathers into him. And he has Mr. Axe! Is that... The poor sap I found dead in the hallway? It''s a good thing he''s good with that axe, and the moleratmadillows are mostly flailing about, but the ones nearest him are assaulting him. I cup my hands together and shout. "Hello! Sorry about the mess in here! Didn''t know you were in here! I''ll be more careful in the future! Good luck!" Suddenly I''m back to reality. That was weird. I don''t feel guilty about the vermin, they''re mostly not sentient, and they hurt me and Grimal first, but knowing I trapped some random dude''s soul makes me unhappy. I hope the zombies didn''t get their original souls stuck in there too. Looking closely at my big soul orb, it looks exactly like the vision. Swirling green sky, deep black ocean. I can''t see anything smaller, but looking at it for a while, I see a little green wisp rise from the depths. I''ll wait to add the centipede''s soul orb to my collection. And these ones over here, those were the giant lizards, it''s a good thing I didn''t add those in to the big orb yet, wouldn''t want to make the dude''s life even more miserable. When I join the mana crystal from the centipede into my system though, my mana capacity practically doubles! Yesssssssss! With that, it''s trivial to finish Grimal''s defenses but I''m depleted by the time I''m done. I curl up, and listen to Grimal talk about everything I picked up, pulling items out of my mouth one at a time with a giant hand. Maybe this isn''t so bad after all. 33 LOOT! "This one''s for accurately siphoning off units of mana for alchemy, but I think it''s broken. that piece isn''t supposed to be hanging off like that." "That''s a training sword for novices, it automatically leaches mana from the user when held after a drop of the user''s blood is added to the formation in the middle there. It uses the mana to soften impacts. It''s useful for training young ones who might lose their mental grip on powering an enchantment, but not for much else. It has a mana crystal in the hilt though, if you want to take it apart." Oh! This is actually really promising. There''s a full spell on this for softening impacts! I''m going to inscribe this on my belly so I can jump off cliffs! And endure beatings! Grimal is looking at me funny, but this is actually a grand breakthrough. And the other spell, that leaches mana... I wonder if I could leach mana from someone if I got a drop of their blood and hung on to them. I don''t think it''s practical, but I can try it sometime later. The impact softening spell devours mana though, I''m going to have to use it with care. Let''s see, what else do we have here... What about this! "Ah, that''s a good find. That''s a lifeform scanner. Pretty hard to use, but if someone practices, they can tell where nearby life is. I knew a fellow who could tell you were coming from a mile off!" "How do you use it?" "I don''t really know... never was any good with the things." "Ah, thanks again for your insight" I look closely. There''s a clearly labeled input and output, but it doesn''t actually say what kind of mana it takes. Maybe there''s a manual somewhere in these books. Not sure if this will be useful in the short term, but maybe later. Let''s look at something else. "Hmm. Not actually sure what that is. Looks cool though." The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. "Oh, that one is a beam sword. It shoots a beam of energy out, they aren''t that popular, kind of weak, but they''re good for training matches since they rarely cause fatal injuries. Not good for the eyes." HOLY SHIT! MAGIC LASER! All right, gotta stay calm so I don''t annoy Grimal... Focus. Calm. MAGIC LASER! Precision engraving! Distance weapon! Magic Laser! I carefully stow that one for later, since I know if I start playing with it now, I''ll never finish learning about this stuff. Calm... Let''s pull out the next item. "Oh. Um. You should get rid of that... It''s gross." Oh. I didn''t really look at it before but I found this in a secret drawer with a bunch of books. I got excited because of hidden loot... but... Yeah. Let''s take this and those books and put it in the old fridge in the kitchen. Gross... Let''s move on. "Ah, very good find, that''s a mana splitter. You can use it to seperate unpurified mana into various component types." Wait. What? "A lot of folks who specialize would get a splitter mounted on a wristband, feed the kinds of mana they wanted into their mana core, then fed the rest into a converter core like that fire one you use for your flamethrower" WAIT. WHAT. "So, you''re telling me regular mana is just... mixed together specialized mana." "Yep." "Spells can use any kind of mana?" "Well, yes, but not as well. If you put fire mana into your flamethrower spell, it should last longer and burn hotter than if you used regular mana. Most important people end up specializing in a mana type and only storing that kind in their mana core." "Why? That seems a bit limiting." "You can still cast other spells, just not as well, but your specialty gets really strong. A specialized mage is twice as strong as a non specialized one." Hmm. I need to rethink my "Make one big mana core" strategy now that I have a splitter. I show Grimal a few more things until he gets tired, but a lot of it is worn out, non magical, or kind of lame. I don''t actually have a use for a magic tooth whitener, for instance. There''s a few elemental weapons that I store to study their spells later, and a few instruments for studying microbial life, analysing organic and inorganic samples, and refining materials, but I decide most of that can wait in favor of messing about with typed mana and playing with a magic laser. *BZZZZZZT* *BZZZZZZT* *BZZZZZZT* I might not have figured out how to use magic to make decent metal parts yet, but I have gained the power of subtractive manufacturing. So far, I made a box to put all the scientific tools in out of what was left of the ovens and some chunks of benches, and a couple of book boxes to store all the books in but still keep them clean and dry. I''m going to figure out how to read them. But later, there''s still too much combat at hand. After playing about with the laser for a while, I get a feel for it and decide to try something a bit harder. The engravings in the mana crystals that are typed... is this how they were made? The answer is no. Sigh. I''ll find out your secrets someday. I attempted to play with the splitter, but aside from my mana crystal grenades, I don''t have enough mana crystals to store all the types of mana it splits into. I combined most of them, and I have only 4, of increasing size. They''re uncombineable because I don''t have enough crystals to combine with them. I could just feed the leftovers into the fire crystal like Grimal said, but that seems wasteful somehow. I don''t even know what some of this is. It''s obvious. I''ve spent too long playing with toys, and now it''s time to get back to work. Prepping my mana crystal grenades, I wiggle all my legs in the ever more familiar pattern of a centipede''s walk as I head off to the jungle. Let''s see what that spider is made of, then go investigate the place if I survive. update: resumption of chapters soon (not a chapter) things got tough for a bit but I''m still here, and better than ever. I''ll have a power system running to get my desktop online soon. sorry about the delay, some serious stuff came up. lots of work still to do but I want to sit down and work on non life or death sorts of things for a short while, being this productive is tiring. anyway, hope you folks are still doing ok. I thought I didn''t have a sense of touch before but now I do? It''s probably just the nerves. It''s one thing to march down here with intent to kill, but it''s another to go through with it. Steeling my nerves, I approach with extreme trepidation, moving extremely slowly, making the softest possible footfalls and examining every inch of ground. It''s much easier with so many legs. That spider lives underground, and I have a suspicion about how he knew I was there last time. I almost don''t notice it in time, but Bob manages to catch sight of it before I do and warns me. A tiny thread of spidersilk about 2 feet off the ground. I can''t see it with these metal eyes very well, an unfortunate flaw, but the delinquents are more than happy to lend me their eyes instead. I carefully follow the spidersilk back along its length, where the thread ends, I''ll find the spider waiting. I know where it was last time, but I doubt it stayed put after I trashed the place. Following the threads, I find a massive junction of threads all leading to one semi-realistic looking rock. This one''s probably made of spidersilk like the other, and a big spider hides underneath. It''s time to execute the plan. I climb up a tree, position myself above the likely hideout, and begin unhinging my jaw. Once my mouth is open as far as I can make it, I spit up a small boulder, grabbing on with all my arms so I don''t drop it. I carefully position it so I can grip it with my metal mandibles, and begin heating it up with magic. A small application of heat, then a short wait, then another, repeated gradually over a period of time to make sure the rock doesn''t heat up too fast, and soon the rock is smoking and starts to faintly glow. The rock softens up enough so that it slips from my grip, and plummets, nearly molten, from the tree, smashing through the facade below and soon sending flames licking up from below ground. I don''t see a spider. Huh.Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. Well I''ve lost the surprise now. I thought for sure he''d be in there. The only reasons he wouldn''t... Maybe he was hiding somewhere else or out running errand or something. or maybe he noticed me coming. If I were a sneaky spider, I''d have climbed the tree too. Fuck it, paranoia is the only reasonable answer to this, isn''t it? Making a snap decision, I draw flamethrower wands with all four hands and spray fire in all directions, setting as much of the tree on fire at once as I can. I want to say I leaped from the tree, but considering I was hanging upside down from a branch by my legs, I simply let go and tried to right myself before I struck the ground. The delinquents all bail, watching in all directions to see if my paranoia paid off or if I am a fool. Jessica spots a suspiciously prolonged and directional rustling of leaves as something unseen moves to another tree, and I chase after it, burning the canopy as I go. Make a fool of me once, and I''ll write it off. Pull the same thing again and I''ll burn your house down. I am so done with this kind of thing. As if I didn''t get enough of that back home. I quickly lose track of the rustling in the treetops as the forest blazes around me, but that''s ok. I know everywhere the spider isn''t, and everywhere he could be. The parts where he could be aren''t on fire yet. That can be solved by adding more fire. after seeding the fire enough, I head back to the entrance and cover myself in dirt, while sending the delinquents to safety. Nowhere to run, you bastard! Unless there''s another exit somewhere, I''ll see the spider soon. A few minutes later, I see it approaching. The smoke is messing with whatever magic it''s using to shroud its form, and a wavery outline shows up. I form a link and rise from the earth. "Did you come to concede?" The spider pauses. "Well played, Sapling. I never thought you had it in you. It appears you have put me in a corner. But no, I am not here to concede. I am here to kill you for burning down my home." mid speech, the spider lunges towards me, but I am ready. The mana crystal grenade I buried only takes a small spark of mana to detonate, and both of us are caught in the blast. While the shockwave stunned the spider, I lunged forward myself, pincers forward and gnashing. My limbs met its limbs, and while I scored some grievous wounds with my mandibles, it was much, much stronger than I. I was thrown back, but not before I left another grenade behind. The wounds I had made were now gaping chasms where muscle and blood could be seen moving beneath the skin. Burnt gashes leaked a bloodlike greenish fluid that stopped falling on the way to the ground, reentering the body through some kind of magic. Energy came from the spider, sealing the gashes with some kind of translucent energy barrier. A screeching angry sound could be heard from the creature, as translucent blades formed on the ends of its legs and it reared back to strike again. Spewing fire at the angry spider, I wove through the burning trees, running as fast as I could. I knocked down a tree towards the spider, only to see it split the tree in pieces and knock them aside, continuing its charge. I deployed two more mana grenades, but it was watching for them now, and I barely grazed it with either explosion. It''s time... A quick link, and a message goes through, and Eliza descends from the ceiling, camouflaged by her transparent frame. She lands right in the middle of its back and starts driving her massive new crystal stinger home, again and again. I cut the link after it''s apparent she has it covered. Her laughter is unsettling. 35 Laid to roast I''m starting to get a rather strong feeling that Eliza eating mana crystals is not going to end well. The sounds she''s making while chewing on the spider''s crystal are rather horrifying, and I think she is getting more bloodthirsty every day. Herman isn''t having similar problems, and while he is a bit... odd... he isn''t going off the deep end. He''s still at his previous level of odd. I don''t think I should let the delinquents have any more mana crystal. After a brief discussion with Sam, Bob, and Josephine, they all agree. They were here the whole time after all, and they''re seeing the same thing I am right now. I''m pretty sure mana crystal is addictive somehow, and the way Eliza is busily slurping up spider blood makes my nonexistent guts roil. They agree to let Josephine go first, she''s the smallest. I tell them we''ll work on it while I''m healing up, and drag my carcass towards the exit. There''s severe rents in my plating, slices in my vine musculature, burns and shrapnel damage all over, and I''m not in great condition. I''m not sure if I can fix all this damage, but I need to try. This body is the best thing I have going for me right now. One of my mandibles and two of my legs are hanging at off angles due to damage to the plant matter I''m using to move around, so I heal that up first and make a little extra plant material to hold the damaged pieces in place so I don''t lose any parts on my way back to the cafeteria. It stiffens everything up, but beggars can''t be choosers. At least I can still ambulate. Why didn''t Sunny say anything about the spider? Did he already have permissions? Sunny didn''t ask me to kick his ass... strange. Another puzzle. I drag myself back to the cafeteria and begin considering how to make repairs. While I''m thinking, Josephine holds still while I add soul thread on to her soul, weaving it together so it won''t come unraveled before it gets incorporated. I end up being unable to melt the centipede''s metal, I can''t seem to get it hot enough, so I build a sand mold around each damaged part, melt some forks from the cafeteria down, and pour in molten metal to join the pieces back together. A little buffing with a brick of freshly made sandstone, and it looks terrible, but it works. One part at a time I put everything back together.Enjoying this book? Seek out the original to ensure the author gets credit. Gremal peeks in from the ceiling occasionally when I drop something or otherwise cause a disturbance, and for some reason that makes it all seem just a bit better. I might have some problems to deal with, but they don''t seem that bad anymore. Eliza even brings me the spider''s soul orb while I''m working. It''s massive, and it doesn''t have the green streaks flowing through it that mine does, it''s pure black. That reminds me... I remove one of my eyes, and grow the vines attaching it to my system, and bring it close to my soul orb while I work. After a few minutes of watching, I can see the tiny flicker of a moleratmadillow soul being struck down, a tiny glowing axe barely visible. I''m not sure what I can do for them in there, but it puts me at ease a little knowing they''re still running about. After that I realize I can''t ungrow vines, and have to perform some minor surgery to fit my eye back in the socket. After some time, I''m as patched up as I can get, and Josephine''s soul is done for now. She''s already turning slightly green, which is a good sign going by Herman''s transformation. He''s gotten pretty big, but it''s taken a while. Looks like we''re ready to roll out on a small expedition. Time to go find out what else is in the jungle. If I can take down a few centipedes while I''m at it I could use the spare parts. I''m still uncomfortable with them hanging around hiding undernath the floors, given how dangerous they have the potential to be. There''s evidence of centipede activity pretty much everywhere now, strange depressions and holes in the floor where the ground has collapsed due to tunnels. I''m not sure how many of these things are around, but I''m ready to do my part trimming the numbers. After some looking around, I find a section of floor that''s more chewed up than the others. I decide to borrow a trick from the spider, and grow a cutting off myself in a crack in the floor, making sure it has tiny, delicate leaves, easily stirred by the tiniest vibrations, then lay down on the floor watching the plant carefully for any sign of subterranian movement. and I wait.... and wait.... and wait.... until I see a tentative quiver in the tiny leaf. It grows more pronounced, and I wait, wound like a spring. Suddenly, I can feel it, and I know the centipede is below. I rear up and slam down, busting through the flimsy tunnel ceiling where I chewed the surface just enough to make this easier. I grasp the creature below with arms and mandibles, positioning each carefully. With my knowledge of the centipede''s anatomy, I slide my mandible between two plates, and pry them up like popping off a bottlecap. With a well placed snip, I sever the centipede''s spine, and its writhing and flailing are greatly reduced. I wrestle the creature from the ground and since it now is paralyzed, it struggles mightily but dragging its own bulk behind it prevents escape. I crawl just behind its head and get a strong grip as I peel my way in and grow a root directly into the centipede''s brain and organs. It''s a slower process, but far more humane than pulling its organs out while it still lived. Another one down. I''ll stash the body with Grimal, then head into the jungle for some exploration. 36 Not remotely interesting Now that I have some spare parts, I''m less worried about getting trashed for a while. Grimal complained mightily about me leaving a centipede in the ceiling with him, but if I leave it on the floir I''m pretty sure one of the others will eat it. Once I make sure there''s no imminent danger from the direction of the jungle, I can sit down and learn some more spells from my loot. I''m very excited. Still pretty nervous about the antelope-thing on the other side of the barricade, but it doesn''t seem like it can cross the barricade. The jungle, as I arrive and look it over, is absolutely savaged. The spider and I burned a lot more of it than I thought and there''s still smoke in the air even though all the fires appear to be out. Did the fires go out because of a lack of oxygen? Slightly concerning... It''s good I don''t need to breathe, but everything else does. For now, I think I will do my part. I don''t expect to get into combat soon, so I sit down for a few minutes and grow a few seeds I find into larger plants. I grab a few cuttings off myself and plant them for additional coverage. I burned this whole area, and it probably was providing oxygen to the residents. Maybe a few more plants will stave off a complete catastrophe. After a while longer, I manage a small amount of ground cover and leafy bushes. Many places in the soil are still too alkaline to grow plants, but I''m not really sure if it ever rains down here. Maybe there''s a magic doodad that simulates rain - I can''t see a jungle flourishing without precipitation after all. Along the way as I hold very still and painstakingly grow or fail to grow plants, I see quite a few small animals come out of hiding. There''s birds, small rodents, larger rodents, and a few snakes. I don''t see any bugs, but they''re probably sleeping because of the smoke. Hopefully regrowing this jungle a bit will be enough to help support their lives. I feel bad, but fire is the best weapon available to me. Maybe it''s time to come up with a new one. This jungle is rather large actually, and a good portion of it didn''t burn. With a little help from me, everything should be ok, right? If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. That done, I follow the wall around back, looking for other exits. After some considerable hunting, I find a sliding door made out of rock against the rock wall. It looks just like the wall, but there''s 2 visible seams. Nice! I can''t figure out how to get it open though. Theres no handles or mechanisms. After 20 minutes of trying to figure it out, I smash though the door, chewing a large hole through it, and knocking the fragments of the rock door out of the way. It''s a small room full of esoteric machinery. Not really sure what any of this does, but if I take some time, maybe I can figure it out? Digging to follow some mana linkages from the door leads me to a nearby tree that''s actually fake, and has a control panel in a secret compartment revealed by sliding away a fake section of bark. All right, the buttons are labeled, but I still can''t read. let''s just actuate them and find out what they do. The first control is a sliding switch, and when slid to the left the remnants of the door move about like they are trying to open. Oops. Well, I never would have found this otherwise, there''s no avoiding it I guess. The second switch has a huge label on it with a lot of words. I''m not sure what it does, but if someone needed several sentences to describe it, it might be subtle or dangerous. I''ll do that one last if the other buttons don''t do anything terrible. All right, next button. Three word description. I press it, and the lights go out. A soft glow, not unlike that of moonlight illuminates everything, but only a little. Ah, I see. Those are the lights. I press the button again and the lights don''t turn back on. Hmmmm. Maybe the next button is for turning the lights back on? A press of the next button causes it to start raining. Additional presses do not make it stop... Why won''t it stop? I mash the button a bit just in case it is broken. Nothing changes. Great. Well, I''m in this deep, what else can I do? I press the next button and something falls from the ceiling, making a loud thump. I look towards the direction where the noise originated and press it again. I faintly see something fall from the ceiling. What is that? I press the button again and watch carefully as another thing falls from the ceiling. Still no idea. Oh well. Next button. I press on the next button and the sticks and leaves on the ground begin to lift off the ground by themselves and form a large pile nearby. Hmm. Maybe that''s for cleaning up the place? An auto rake feature is one I would appreciate. The next button turns the lights back on, but it''s still raining. The last button causes a breeze to pick up, but pressing it again doesn''t stop it. I don''t get it. This is a weird control panel. Let me write down these notes on the buttons for Grimal. I guess I overestimated my ability to puzzle this out. I grab a piece of door and carve an approximation of the letters into it with my mandibles. It takes a ridiculous amount of time. Finally I''m done, and though the handwriting is bad, I think Grimal will be able to read it. Let''s go find out what fell from the ceiling. I head in that direction, and soon arrive to find a VERY big snake. I don''t mean it''s long, or huge, necessarily, though it is pretty large. It is so fat, it looks like it ate something way bigger than it. Huh. I probe at it mentally and form a link. "Hello?" I recieve a jumble of anger in response. Hissing emanates from the snake, along with some incoherent territorial thoughts. It''s a regular snake, only 20 feet long. I decide to kill it and see what it ate, since whatever it is is probably what dropped from the ceiling. A quick slice and the now headless snake is no longer sending me incoherent thoughts of violence. Another few slices and I find out what is in the snake. It''s two other dead snakes. I see. The button is a snake dispenser. I have a snake dispenser. Where do the snakes come from? But first, let''s see if there''s cores in these. All right, there are, though they''re a bit small for such a large snake. Very strange.
