Azriel''s gaze settled on a doorway across the room, slightly ajar and barely holding onto its hinges. Through the narrow opening, he could see a soft, pale light spilling in from outside, illuminating specks of dust that floated lazily in the air. The sight was strangely inviting, a beacon in the quiet desolation of the temple. He rose to his feet, steadying himself as he took a step toward it, the worn floorboards creaking beneath him.
"Maybe that''s the way out," he murmured to himself, eyes fixed on the light.
Azriel moved cautiously toward the doorway, his steps soft on the creaking wooden floor. The dim light filtered through the torn shoji screens and cast long shadows across the room, highlighting faded calligraphy scrolls still clinging to the walls. The air was thick with an earthy scent, laced with a faint hint of old incense, as though remnants of past rituals lingered in the silence. He brushed past an empty alcove where a small, dusty altar sat neglected, its offerings long since crumbled to dust.
Reaching the doorway, he peered out. Beyond the worn wooden frame lay a stone path leading into a mist-laden courtyard, where moss had overtaken the ancient stone lanterns standing solemnly among the trees. A weathered torii gate loomed in the distance, half-covered in vines, marking the temple''s threshold to the world outside. Azriel took a deep breath, the chill of the morning air grounding him.
"This place feels familiar," he whispered, hesitating for just a moment before stepping through the doorway and into the mist.
As Azriel stepped through the doorway and out into the mist, the sight before him stole his breath. The forest dropped away sharply, giving way to an expanse of floating islands suspended in the sky, each one adrift in a vast sea of clouds. Towering cliffs dotted with waterfalls hung in midair, the streams cascading into nothingness before they transformed into a glistening mist. Strange, ethereal birds soared between the islands, their cries echoing faintly in the open sky.
"I¡ I''m¡" He tried to find words, but his voice caught in his throat. He took a shaky step forward, gripping the edge of the temple''s stone path. This wasn''t some hidden glade or secluded mountain; he was somewhere he had known. Stories he had always read since he was a teenager.
"This¡ isn''t possible," he whispered.
"Except it is great-grandson," a deep, resonating voice intoned from behind him, filled with both warmth and ancient weight.
Azriel froze, the hairs on the back of his neck standing up as the familiar voice washed over him, rich and grounding. Slowly, he turned around, his breath catching as he faced the source. Standing there, framed by the faded doorway of the temple, was his great-grandfather, a figure he''d only known through memories and old photographs. The man''s form was imposing yet gentle; he was wearing dark, comfortable pants that allowed for easy movement, a long robe-like jacket that draped over his shoulders, the fabric adorned with shimmering stars and swirling nebulae designs across the cloth as if he stole a fragment of the night sky. His great-grandpa oddly looked as young as him.

"Great-grandpa¡?" Azriel''s voice was barely a whisper, his disbelief giving way to a flood of emotion. The old man, or rather a young man, smiled, his eyes filled with kindness and a deep, knowing spark.
"Yes, Azriel. It''s been some time," he replied, folding his hands in his sleeves.
"How..?"
"I don''t have the time to explain," Arthur responded. "Welcome to Astraquilla Azriel."
"It''s real, Astraquilla is real; your stories are real," Azriel said with some happiness in his voice. "Why..?"
"Why what?" Arthur asked.
"Why did you send me here? What is with a crazy door?"
"Okay, slow down, Azriel,''" Arthur said with calm in his voice. "First, I can''t explain anything about the door."
"What is the second reason?"
"I sent you here to find a new reason to live," his great-grandfather said, his gaze steady and unwavering.
"What¡ what do you mean by that?" he asked, confusion twisting his voice as he felt a knot tighten in his chest. "I had a life back home. I don''t understand¡why bring me here?"
His great-grandfather''s expression softened a gentle sadness in his eyes.
"Azriel, you''ve been wandering through life, bound by duty and routine, but without direction, without purpose. The spark you once had has dimmed. I could feel it from beyond." He gestured toward the vast sky, the islands hovering like ancient guardians of secrets long forgotten. "This place, this world, holds challenges and truths beyond what you''ve ever known. But more than that, it holds pieces of yourself you have yet to uncover."
. "You mean¡you think I can find that here?" Azriel looked down, his thoughts a chaotic swirl
"Not just here," he said, with a small smile played on his great-grandfather''s lips. "but within yourself." He placed a hand on Azriel''s shoulder, and suddenly, the warmth of his touch felt grounding, as real as anything in Azriel''s old life. Azriel closes his eyes and breathes, calming his heart.
"Will you trust me, great-grandson, and take this journey?"
"Yes, I will, Grandpa," Azriel answered with complete confidence in his crimson eyes.
"Then know what the first step is," Arthur said, pointing towards the temple. "It''s safe in there."
Azriel looked at his great-grandfather, feeling the weight of the unspoken words between them, then glancing back at the worn, shadowed interior of the temple. He took a step toward the entrance, his heart pounding, but he paused, turning back one last time.
"Great-Grandpa¡ I just wanted to say¡ I love you. Thank you for everything." His voice wavered, the words heavy with gratitude and a longing he hadn''t realized he''d been carrying.
"I love you too, Azriel. I always have." Arthur''s warm smile broke across his face. His figure seemed to shimmer slightly in the morning light, like a memory half-forgotten and half-remembered, and then his great-grandfather vanished.
Azriel gave a small nod to the empty air, holding back the well of emotion building inside him, and turned toward the temple. He stepped through the doorway, the cool air enveloping him as shadows embraced him once more. The quiet within the temple felt different, no longer ominous but inviting as if the walls held secrets meant just for him. He took one breath, remembering the beginning of Tales of Astraquilla, his great-grandfather''s first step in this world.
"Begin [System Integration]!"
Chapter 4: System Integration
Azriel''s world spun in chaos, and he could barely hold onto reality as the temple walls faded into shadows. He''d crossed the threshold into this ancient, silent place, stepping through the doorway his great-grandfather had guided him toward. The once-forgotten temple felt like it was breathing around him, the walls creaking with life as energy pulsed through the air. Just as he took in a steadying breath, the atmosphere thickened, and a glowing screen flickered before him, pulsing with an ethereal message.
SYSTEM INTEGRATION INITIATED
Azriel''s body jolted as energy surged through him, more power than he''d ever felt, foreign yet instinctively understood. Attributes, skills, arts, and magic carved themselves into his being. Strength, Agility, Intellect, Willpower, Awareness, and Presence all became more than words as raw power thrummed in his veins. Arts, battle techniques, dimensional forces, even the warmth of a flame dancing on his fingertips, all of it flooded his mind. He felt limitless and connected, yet his body strained to contain it. As he steadied himself, another alert blazed before his eyes.
Significant Records Detected warning: System Energy Overload Imminent.
The warning was immediate and unrelenting. Power tore through him, fierce and unforgiving, like an inferno blazing in his very bones. His muscles seized, his vision blurring as he struggled against the unbearable force flooding his senses, his mind reeling under its weight. Visions flickered of strange lands, ancient battles, and memories that weren''t his yet felt like fragments of a hidden truth. He began to let himself flow with the power, not fighting it but letting it carve its way into his essence. His mind cleared, his spirit adapting as the storm within him began to quiet, but before he could fully regain his strength, a new alert shattered his calm.
| System Overload Unstable. Forced Charging in Progress. |
Azriel''s relief vanished as another torrent of energy surged into him, fiercer than before. His pulse thundered, his muscles trembling as his body was forcibly charged, taking on more power than he could bear. Sparks of light crackled off his skin, the ancient air thick with the sound of something ominous, the power within him threatening to split him apart.
"N-No¡!" he choked, clutching his head as the sheer force wracked his body. The temple around him dimmed, shadows deepening as the surge continued to pour in, overwhelming his senses. His spirit struggled under the relentless force, bending to contain the power that now seemed to be reshaping him from the inside.
On the edge of breaking, a single thought emerged through the pain:
Let it reshape you, or it will break you.
With every last bit of willpower, Azriel surrendered. He allowed the energy to flow, not as an enemy but as a force molding him into something new. His essence expanded, his being stretching to accommodate the immense, unrelenting power. His body, mind, and spirit united to contain the force, adapting to this strange, terrible strength now coursing through him. Azriel felt a new surge within him, a deep warmth resonating from his very core. His vision flickered as another screen materialized, text etched in symbols he could now instinctively understand.

In the heart of a sprawling city, lanterns swayed gently under curved, red-tiled rooftops. Streets lined with wooden stalls bustled with life as people of many races mingled elves in robes adorned with intricate kanji, dwarves bartering for rare herbs, and humans in flowing yukatas decorated with mountain and ocean motifs. Kitsune with sleek, foxlike features and gnomes tinkering with enchanted trinkets moved along pathways paved with smooth stones, each face calm and immersed in the serene harmony of the city.
Overhead, cherry blossom trees, which looked slightly larger than their Earth counterparts, cast a soft, warm shade. Their petals drifted lazily on a breeze that carried the faint scent of incense and freshly steamed buns. Children chased each other around a koi pond, laughter ringing through the air. For a moment, the scene was peaceful and timeless, a slice of calm in a world steeped in magic.
Then, as if summoned from the depths of another realm, the city seemed to hold its breath. Above the skyline, an ethereal glow began to gather, forming a vast, shimmering outline. Gasps rose from the crowd as an enormous, astral projection of a dragon took shape in the sky. It was a sight unlike anything they''d ever seen: a four-winged dragon, its vast, feathery wings spread wide, with a body that seemed woven from stardust and constellations. The dragon''s wings pulsed with light, casting shimmering reflections across the city below, illuminating the stunned faces turned skyward.
As the dragon''s wings stretched, a shadow began to creep across the city. Daylight dimmed, colors fading as an unnatural darkness descended, casting the world in twilight. The hum of the dragon''s presence resonated, filling the air with an energy that was both awe-inspiring and deeply unsettling. People stared in wonder and fear, their eyes reflecting the starlit creature. They watched as the astral dragon hovered silently above, its enormous, feathered wings blocking out the sun and casting a spectral night over the city.
Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
The Astral Dragon hung in the sky for a moment that felt eternal. Its feathery wings stretched across the heavens, filling the city with its cosmic presence. Every soul below, frozen in awe and disbelief, could only watch as the creature''s radiant light shimmered like distant stars. Its vast, starlit eyes seemed to scan the world below as though it were searching for something or perhaps simply bearing silent witness to all.
Then, with a final, blinding pulse of light, the projection began to dissolve. The dragon''s wings folded slowly, its form shimmering and fading, breaking apart into thousands of tiny, sparkling fragments. The stardust scattered, floating down like a gentle, celestial rain, each glimmering particle vanishing before it touched the ground. The darkness that had cloaked the city lifted as the last traces of the dragon disappeared, leaving only the sun''s gentle warmth returning to the streets.
The city exhaled in collective relief, the murmur of voices picking up, some in wonder, others in hushed confusion. People blinked, glancing at one another as if to confirm that what they''d seen was real, yet finding no trace of the dragon''s presence. Petals drifted once again from the cherry blossoms, and the world slipped back into its serene rhythm as though nothing had happened.
But in every gaze that had witnessed the dragon''s fleeting existence, a glint of stardust remained a reminder that something ancient, something beyond comprehension, had touched their world and left them changed.

Azriel awoke with a start, the remnants of his arduous transformation still humming within him. He lay on a smooth stone floor, the coolness seeping into his bones, yet his body felt undeniably different. As his eyes fluttered open, he became acutely aware of subtle movements beneath his skin. Abstract tattoos began to shimmer along his arms, intricate patterns swirling and shifting with a life of their own. Hexagons formed and dissolved, interwoven with swirling nebulas that sparkled with ethereal light. The designs traveled slowly, cascading from his arms across his chest and pooling onto his back, creating a mesmerizing tapestry of celestial symbols.
He reached up, watching in awe as the tattoos continued their dance, settling into a complex arrangement that seemed both ancient and futuristic. Each pattern pulsed gently, resonating with the newfound energy coursing through him. Azriel felt a surge of clarity and heightened perception. The Awareness attribute was now fully active, attuning his senses to dimensions beyond the ordinary.
As he stood, a subtle yet unmistakable weight settled on his shoulders. Glancing over his shoulder, his heart skipped a beat. A magnificent Astral Dragon hovered just above his back, its four feathery wings unfurled and shimmering with stardust. The dragon''s eyes glowed with an intelligent light, its presence both awe-inspiring and serene. Azriel felt a deep connection to the creature, an unspoken bond that hinted at guidance and protection.
Just as Azriel opened his mouth to speak to the dragon, a cascade of glowing notifications flooded his vision, each one flashing urgently in his mind. He staggered, overwhelmed as lines of text scrolled before him, filling his awareness with a torrent of updates.
Race: Umbral Human Preselected
Human +5 to all Attributes per Level
Umbral Bloodline +10 to Awareness per Level
Umbral Human +10 Free Points per Level
"I''m an Umbral Human, huh?"
According to what his great-grandpa wrote about Umbral Humans, they were corrupted by the shadows of the twilight region of the fey realm. In one book, he stayed in that region for a prolonged amount of time. Did that mean all of his family related to his great-grandpa were Umbral Humans? Despite his family being African American, they all had red eyes, and the hair on their heads was snow white. His great-grandpa always said their family genes were weird. Is this what he meant? A new window appeared, interrupting his train.
Radiantborn Detected
"What is Radiantborn?"
Radiantborns are said to be beings touched by Astral. They are rare, gifted individuals who draw their strength from an ancient cosmic power, and this celestial heritage is visible in their very essence.
Radiantborn +10 to all Attributes per Level
Radiantborn +20 Free Points per Level
"Holy, that 80 points per level up!" Azriel shouted excitedly. Not because of the cosmic power aspect but because of the attribute points he would gain at every level up. His mind swirled tons of builds that would make him one of the strongest people in the world. His excitement ended with annoyance from all the system notifications.
"Just summarize all of it already!" The system cycles for several minutes before finishing. A single window appeared with all the changes to him.

Skills Transferred from Orignal World:
Acting
Astral Breathing
Cold Resistance
Firearm Mastery
Gunsmithing
Sword Mastery
Skills Obtained from Bloodline:
Mentality of Nemesis
|
Azriel looked at the skills he had learned from Earth as something to behold. Acting made sense from years of voice acting; the Cold Resistance had to have come from living in a state where it could snow in the summer. The weapon one definitely came from his... mother''s side of the family. Astral Breathing came from his great-grandpa teaching it to him for some reason; instincts told him to be careful where he used the skill.
"Mentality of Nemesis?" Azriel said questioningly, looking at the skill. The window showed he obtained from his bloodline. Nemesis was the Greek goddess of retribution, but that didn''t click in his mind because none of the books he read from his great-grandpa ever mentioned the goddess. The only other being he could think of was the theme of retribution, which was his great-grandma, The Phoenix of Retribution.
"Naw, no way." Azriel couldn''t believe that The Phoenix of Retribution, a Primordial of vengeance, was his great-grandma. "I''m going just to choose a class so I don''t lose my mind."
Class Options Available: 600
"God damn it..." Azriel began scrolling through the options. He then remembers the Astral Dragon he saw earlier. When he looked up again, it had long vanished. Azriel shrugged it off and kept scrolling through the options.
Chapter 5: Moving Forward
The palace walls echoed with worried murmurs as the Astral Dragon''s projection faded from the sky, but Princess Katsumi remained resolute. Her heart thudded with excitement as she prepared for her journey, deftly tying her vibrant pink hair back, securing it to stay out of her eyes. Her fox ears, the same soft pink as her hair, twitched at the sounds around her, catching every anxious whisper from the palace staff. Behind her, her fluffy tail, matching the color of her hair, swished with both anticipation and determination.
She adjusted her traveling robes, white adorned with intricate silver embroidery that shimmered faintly with protective enchantments. These robes were specially designed for her magical prowess, offering both freedom of movement and a layer of magical resistance. Her emerald-green eyes, bright with a glimmer of defiance, focused ahead, cutting through any lingering doubt. Against her father''s wishes, she had resolved to step beyond the wards of the city into a forest affected by the realm of Yokai.
As Katsumi approached the palace gates, her mother, the Empress, appeared silently by her side. Her mother, Empress Kayoko Hirayama, looked exactly alike; however, she wore red robes with gold embroidery. Katsumi nearly jumped despite nineteen years of living with her mother''s Platinum Rank abilities, and she could never get used to her mother''s ability to slip into place without a sound. The Empress was known throughout the realm for her strength and skill, unmatched by nearly anyone else in the empire, and yet here she stood, silent and steady, offering not her power but her guidance.
With a gentle but firm touch, the Empress placed a hand on Katsumi''s shoulder.
"I know you''re destined for more, but this path is filled with shadows and many monsters," she said, her voice low and calm. "Be cautious, my star."
Her gaze held Katsumi''s steadily, yet a glimmer of pride sparkled within her dark, discerning eyes. Despite the Empress''s strength and status, the warmth in her expression softened the air around her, a rare look she shared only with her daughter. Katsumi nodded, her heart swelling with determination. She briefly embraced her mother, feeling the strength and reassurance in her presence, then turned her gaze to the towering palace gates, feeling more ready than ever to face the unknown.
At the entrance waited Harper Witlock, her godsister and closest friend. Harper had pale skin and blue hair, fading to cyan at the tips, which caught the morning light, giving her an ethereal glow. The elven woman''s piercing yellow eyes reflected strength and excitement as she adjusted her grip on her double-sided spear, its polished metal gleaming in her hands. She wore a sturdy breastplate, reinforced bracers, and boots built for the rough terrain they''d encounter. Harper''s lips curved into a confident smile as Katsumi approached.
"So, are you ready, Princess?" Harper asked, her voice carrying an easy confidence that Katsumi had come to admire.
"Absolutely your grace," Katsumi responded jokingly.
"Good, the adventuring party is waiting for us near the edge of the forest."
As Harper and Katsumi strode away from the palace gates and into the winding path leading toward the forest, the tension began to melt, giving way to a more relaxed conversation. They spoke of small things at first: a new bakery opening near the market square, their shared love for late-night stargazing, and how Katsumi''s latest spell had accidentally singed a tapestry in the palace hall. Harper chuckled at the thought, swinging her double-sided spear lazily over her shoulder as they walked.
"You really managed to charm the fire out of that one, didn''t you?" Harper teased, her cyan-tipped hair catching the light as she tilted her head with a playful grin.
"It wasn''t supposed to be that strong! I thought I had the flame under control, but¡ apparently not." She shrugged with a smile, her emerald-green eyes sparkling as she recounted the mishap.
They continued their easy chatter, catching up on all the little things they missed in each other''s lives since Harper had arrived from Vyrmoria. But as they neared the edge of the familiar path, Harper''s expression shifted. She grew quiet, glancing at Katsumi with a touch of hesitation.
"So¡ about that dragon we saw," Harper began, her voice lower yet tinged with curiosity and a hint of awe. "The Astral Dragon. You saw it too, didn''t you? Not just in a dream?"
Katsumi''s smile faded as she nodded, her gaze turning serious.
"Yes, I saw it. It wasn''t just a vision; it felt real. Like it was here in our world, even if only for a moment."
"Do you think it has anything to do with you unlocking your Path now?" Harper asked, her golden eyes narrowing thoughtfully. "It almost feels like fate, doesn''t it?"
Katsumi took a deep breath, looking down at her hands.
"I don''t know. Maybe it is fate, or maybe it''s just coincidence. But seeing the dragon awakened something in me, a feeling I can''t ignore. I have to find out what it means, even if I don''t understand it yet." She glanced at Harper, a mixture of determination and uncertainty in her gaze. "And maybe this event is the key to unlocking my next Path."
Harper nodded, her confidence steading slowly.
"Besides, I have a Dragoon by my side to take down that dragon," Katsumi stated with a smile.
"You bet, godsister!" Haper cheered with her confidence fully restored.
With a shared nod, the two young women continued forward to meet with their party.
***
At the edge of the forest, the adventuring party waited in silence, each member observing the dense line of trees that seemed darker and thicker than usual as though harboring hidden mysteries. Evie Dayne stood at the forefront, her dark olive skin warmed by the evening light filtering through the leaves, her black hair flowing down her back as she adjusted the sleeves of her dark grey combat robes. The robes allowed for easy movement, while her roomy black pants gave her flexibility. She glanced over at her long-time friend, Devin Sirocco, a Minotaur man with rugged gray fur, a long scar down his left eye, and silver rings decorating his broad horns. Devin''s presence was steady and imposing, his heavy armor gleaming faintly in the fading sunlight.
Devin turned to Evie, his deep voice breaking the quiet.
"You''re going to have to tell them eventually, Evie. They deserve to know why we''re heading into the Yokai Forest," He crossed his arms, watching her with a knowing look. "Especially our reason."
Evie sighed, brushing a hand through her hair as she glanced away.
"I''ll tell them when it''s necessary," she replied, her tone steady but firm. She scanned the rest of the group, her gaze landing on her sister, Eliza, who looked much like her, though her black hair was cropped short, falling just above her shoulders. Eliza was dressed in tight-fitting leather armor, with a sword at her side and a bandolier filled with throwing knives slung across her chest. She was currently pestering a Silver Dragonfolk man standing beside her.
The Silver Dragonfolk man, Darius Aeolan, clad in red and black combat robes, appeared completely unbothered as Eliza nudged him, asking rapid-fire questions about the forest, his scales, and his opinion of the Astral Dragon. Darius responded to her with calm, monosyllabic replies, seemingly more focused on the horizon than on Eliza''s barrage.
Evie turned back to Devin, folding her arms.
"Do you think the Astral Dragon''s appearance will be a problem?"
Devin gave a low chuckle, shaking his head.
"Nah, Astral Dragons usually mind their own business. They''re cosmic beings mostly interested in things far beyond us. As long as we don''t bother it, we should be fine." He gave her a reassuring nod. "We''re more likely to run into Yokai trouble than dragon trouble."
Evie nodded, her gaze fixed on the forest''s depths.
"Let''s hope you''re right."
As they spoke, the sound of approaching footsteps drew their attention, and they turned to see Katsumi and Harper making their way toward them.
"Alright, now that everyone has arrived, we''re going in!" Evie yelled out. At her command, every one of the Iron rank adventurers fell in line, following behind her and Devin. She hoped deep down it wasn''t too late.

After half an hour of deliberation, he finally settled on [Warrior]. His voice echoed slightly in the quiet temple as he thought out loud, piecing together his choice.
"I mean, a mage class sounds incredible¡ but it wouldn''t be nearly as fun as getting up close and personal." A smirk crossed his face. Insane as the thought was, he couldn''t picture himself slinging spells from a distance and hiding behind others. He wanted to be in the thick of it.
He scrolled past the Cleric and Paladin Paths quickly, shaking his head.
"Religious devotion? Relying on divine favor for power?" He chuckled, dismissing the idea. "No offense to anyone who does, but that''s not me. I''d never be comfortable, constantly wondering if I''m making the right choice in some god''s eyes."
Then there was his great-grandfather''s [Path] legendary class that Arthur Nighthawk had forged himself, passing it down as his legacy. It was tempting; he couldn''t deny that. His great-grandfather''s abilities were awe-inspiring, with a reputation to match. Yet Azriel hesitated. There was something that didn''t sit right about following in Arthur''s footsteps completely. He admired his great-grandfather more than anyone, but he didn''t want to be known as "Arthur Nighthawk''s great-grandson." He wanted to forge his reputation, to make the name Azriel Nighthawk stand for something he created.
"Besides," he added as if explaining his choice to an invisible audience, "[Warrior] just feels right."

Azriel scanned the titles, absorbing the weight and meaning of each one. As the words sank in, he felt a surge of presence and willpower bolstering his resolve, as if the spirits of his family were standing behind him. The Patriarch title brought a sense of responsibility and strength, a deep connection to the legacy his great-grandfather had passed down. It was clear to him now: his journey wasn''t just his own but a continuation of his family''s story.
Skill of a Legend stood out as well, its weight underscoring the power of Astral Breathing, a skill that was clearly more than just a technique. It felt as if he''d inherited a mastery that once belonged to a figure of mythical prowess. It stirred within him, linking him to the very stars. But Artifact Holder puzzled him. He glanced at the title''s source, noting the Nighthawk Codex and Myth Maker. He hadn''t been told much about either one, yet they were somehow tied to him, possibly left by his great-grandfather.
"The Codex and Myth Maker¡" he murmured, the names ringing with mystery. What kind of influence did they wield? And what sort of guardian was he expected to become? More importantly, what are the Nighthawk Codex and Myth Maker?
A faint glow drew Azriel''s attention, and before him, seemingly out of thin air, appeared a familiar yet strangely transformed book. His breath caught as he recognized it as the "Unofficial Guidebook to Astraquilla." The leather cover, once plain blue, was now alive with a breathtaking swirl of nebulas, shifting and spiraling as though the vastness of space itself had been woven into the fabric of the book. Stars flickered and died along its spine while cosmic clouds moved in ghostly patterns, drawing his gaze deeper. The familiar icon etched on the front, the crest of a phoenix, was still there, but it seemed to pulse with an otherworldly light as if empowered by the nebula surrounding it. Reaching out, Azriel ran a hand over the cover, feeling a strange energy surge beneath his fingertips as if the Codex itself were responding to his touch. He could sense it was no ordinary book now; it was alive, a part of something far beyond his understanding.
"What happened to you?" he whispered, turning it over slowly. Two Windows then appeared in his vision.

Azriel couldn''t help but chuckle. The message''s simplicity belied the storm of transformation his body had just undergone. Despite the chaos, the energy surging through him, and the sense of something vast and unknown settling in his soul, the words brought a strange sense of relief.
"Good job, huh?" he muttered to himself. He wasn''t sure whether the system was being sarcastic or genuinely acknowledging the difficulty of the process, but either way, he had made it through. He exhaled deeply, feeling the weight of the moment.
"It''s time to go," Azriel said as he opened his inventory with a voice command, reaching in for his new gear.
***
Azriel stepped outside the temple, feeling the cool air against his newly outfitted form. His gaze drifted over the red jacket that now adorned him, its sleeves rolled up to the elbows, revealing the armor lining etched with intricate nebula art that seemed to shimmer faintly in the light. The jacket''s back bore a bold symbol: a four-winged dragon, its feathers elegantly etched into the design, a representation of strength and grace that felt oddly familiar.
The rest of his attire was functional yet stylish. His black pants had just enough give for combat, and the bracers on his arms were sturdy, ready for any strike or block. His fingerless gloves, tight and worn, gave him better dexterity without sacrificing protection. Finally, his shoes, light and flexible yet reinforced with armor, reminded him of tennis shoes from his previous world, but they were built for a very different kind of terrain.
Azriel flexed his hands, the weight of the gear comfortable yet empowering. It felt right. It was as if the very art on his jacket was a part of him now, and the dragon on his back symbolized the path he was forging. He stood tall for a moment, taking in the view of the surrounding landscape, the weight of his choices settling over him.
"I''m ready to move forward," Azriel muttered under his breath, the weight of his resolve grounding him as his eyes burned with fierce determination. The world of Astraquilla, with all its unknowns and challenges, stretched before him, but he felt an undeniable pull to dive into it. Without hesitation, he moved toward the edge of the temple, the wind rushing past him as his heart pounded. He didn''t need a second thought; he needed this.
"[Astal Veil]!" As his feet left the solid ground, a powerful surge of energy erupted from his back. Four ethereal wings, feathers glistening with nebula-like swirls, unfurled behind him, catching the wind and sending him soaring in the air. His silver-white dreadlocks were tied back, trailing behind him like a banner in the wind as he gained altitude. The cool air brushed against his face, his body feeling lighter and freer than ever before.
Azriel turned his gaze downward, the forest below a vast sea of green. It called to him, and he answered with a swift dive, gliding effortlessly toward the world below. His wings sliced through the air with purpose, his heart beating in time with the rhythm of the flight. He was more than ready for whatever awaited him in this new world; nothing could stop him now.

Chapter 6: First Encounter
After Azriel jumped down into the forest, half an hour slipped by as Azriel wandered through the forest, the canopy overhead filtering the sunlight into shafts of gold and green that danced across the forest floor. Leaves crunched softly underfoot, and the air was filled with the sounds of distant birds and rustling branches. Every few steps, he''d pause, taking in the sights and sounds of this strange place, his senses attuned to the vibrant, otherworldly energy that seemed to hum through the very roots of the trees.
He ran his fingers along the rough bark of a tree, marveling at its texture and the faint, glowing veins running through it, traces of a unique mystical energy to the forest. Azriel felt there was something more to the forest; his Awareness made it a fact that was ingrained in his mind. After a moment, he activated [Eyes of Nighthawk] to gather information about the area. A window appeared in his vision with information about the strange forest.
|
Region Discovered: Yokai-Infused Forest
You have entered a forest saturated with ancient energies and inhabited by mysterious yokai. This land is a place of both wonder and danger, where the veil between the Yokai and Prime realm is thin. Be cautious, for even the trees may watch, and the shadows hold secrets.
Yokai Influence: Creatures of the forest may be friendly, neutral, or hostile, but all possess a keen awareness of intruders. Approach with respect, as some yokai are quick to anger.
|
"Interesting," Azriel thought out loud, scanning the text. He thought of multiple reasons why the borders of the Yokai and Prime realms were so thin. But as he stood there, something prickled at the edge of his Awareness, a faint shift in the air, the soft crunch of leaves behind him. His instincts sharpened, and his body tensed, a thrill of energy coursing through him. Whatever was approaching moved with a deliberate silence as though it was testing him, waiting to see if he noticed.
Slowly, Azriel turned, his gaze sweeping over the dense foliage until it landed on a shadow moving through the trees. He couldn''t make out a distinct shape, but the presence was unmistakable. It radiated a quiet yet potent energy that pulsed in time with the forest. Whether friend or foe, it was clear this entity had a purpose and had been watching him for some time.
"I know you''re there," he said, more a statement than a question. Azriel''s gaze panned over the forest, and multiple glowing red eyes were found. Azriel flicked his hand out, and with a shimmer of light, a gun blade materialized in his grip, a weapon both sleek and formidable. The barrel of the gun portion gleamed in polished silver, intricate engravings spiraling down its length, hinting at both its artistry and deadly precision. Attached to the barrel was a short, razor-edged blade forged from jet-black metal that seemed to drink in the light.
|
Myth Maker
Myth Maker was supposedly the first weapon wielded by the [Phoenix of Retribution]. According to her, this weapon could transform a nobody into a living myth.
|
Properties:
- Ammo Replenishment: Restores bullets by consuming mana at a rate of 1 bullet per 5 mana points
- Scaling:
- Willpower: Increases blade attack power
- Presence: Increases gunshot attack power and critical hit range.
- Damage: Force, Radiant, and Void damage
|
Glowing purple lines pulsed along the blade''s edge, like veins of pure energy that resonated with his touch. The weapon felt balanced, almost like an extension of himself, and Azriel couldn''t help but admire the way the dark metal and vibrant glow contrasted, giving the gun blade an otherworldly presence.
"Let''s see what you can do!" he yelled out, brandishing his weapon. The monsters took Azriel''s display, his weapon like a gunshot that began a race: multiple wolf-like creatures with red eyes and fur that looked like it was made from a shadow substance. Azriel activated his [Eyes of Nighthawk] to analyze the creatures that swarmed in on him.
|
Kageookami:
The Kageookami, or Shadow Wolf, is a creature that exists between the realms of light and darkness, often appearing as a silhouette against the misty horizon. Its fur is midnight black, so dark it seems to absorb the light around it, with ethereal wisps of shadow trailing behind its form. Its glowing eyes, the only part of it that shines, gleam an unnatural red or icy blue, flickering with an otherworldly intensity.
The Kageookami is said to roam the forests of the forgotten, often appearing at dusk or under the light of the full moon when the veil between worlds is thinnest. It moves silently, its paws barely making a sound on the forest floor, and its breath is colder than the night air itself. It is a predator of the shadows, stalking those who dare trespass into sacred or cursed places.
Legends speak of the Kageookami as an omen, a creature that guides lost souls to their final rest, but at a steep price. Some say the creature is a protector, defending the balance between realms, while others claim it is a harbinger of doom, bringing with it chaos and misfortune. Its howl, a sound like the wind howling through empty caverns, echoes in the heart of the forest, and only the bravest adventurers dare to follow it, never knowing if they will return.
|
Azriel''s heart raced as he skimmed through the system window, only half aware of the creature closing in on him. His fingers brushed over the interface, the information rushing by in a blur. Before he could even process the details, a low growl echoed from behind him. He spun around just as the first Shadow Wolf lunged from the shadows, its glowing red eyes locking onto his.
Without hesitation, Azriel swung Myth Maker, its jet-black blade gleaming under the moonlight. The wolf jumped back to avoid his first swing, and its sharp fangs gleamed as it came at him again, but Azriel was faster. He swung the blade upward, pointing the gun''s barrel at the creature. The purple lines running along the edge of the blade flickered with arcane energy as his finger squeezed the trigger.
BANG!
A sharp crack split the air, and a bolt of magical energy shot from the gun''s barrel, slamming into the wolf''s chest. The impact was devastating. The creature''s body jerked back, a howl of pain escaping its throat before it crumpled to the ground. Its shadowy, wispy fur became static after its death. The first Shadow Wolf was gone, leaving only the faint scent of burnt fur lingering in the air.
Azriel barely had time to register his victory before two more of the creatures emerged from the darkness, their glowing eyes locked onto him with predatory hunger. They closed the distance with terrifying speed, their forms twisting and warping as they prepared to strike, and both of the wolves split off from one another surrounding him. The wolves continued to circle, trying to find an opening to strike. After a few moments, one of them took a chance and lunged forward.
Azriel''s breath hitched as one of them lunged, claws extended, its mouth open wide to take a lethal bite. He moved instinctively, stepping back as the first wolf slashed at him with its claws, narrowly missing. In the same motion, Azriel fired again, his gun blade booming to life. The shot hit the second wolf in mid-air, sending it spiraling away with a yelping whine. But the remaining wolf was already upon him. Its jaws snapped shut just inches from his shoulder, and the force of its attack sent a chill down his spine. Without thinking, Azriel used his new superhuman speed and reflexes to duck the wolf''s jaws, activating his new Art.
"[Void Blade]!" Azriel yelled out as he swung the gun blade in a sweeping arc. The blade''s edge rippled with dark, ethereal energy just before it connected with the wolf''s side. With a guttural scream, the creature was bisected, and the halves of its body collapsed into a heap of shadowy mist.

[Void Blade]This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.
This Art draws upon the emptiness between realms, allowing the user to channel the void¡¯s energy into a blade strike that disrupts matter and space. When activated, the blade becomes enveloped in a dark, shimmering aura with faint, shifting patterns that seem to absorb surrounding light, creating a chilling, almost otherworldly appearance. Skilled fighters often use this art to deliver devastating blows or cut through magical defenses, disorienting foes and leaving a lasting impression of pure power.

Azriel took in a deep breath as the battle ended; he then felt his body and senses shift as his attributes grew. After gaining the levels, he felt something different, a new awareness, like a tether connecting him not only to this world but to something beyond, something alien and vast. A notification flashed in his vision, revealing the change.

Inventory Ability Detected Looting Function Restored.
"Hidden path!?" Azriel looked at the notification, stunned. Hidden paths were like secret classes in a video game, and from what he read in his great-grandpa''s books, they were incredibly rare and often came with unusual requirements. Azriel looked at the glowing window in front of him, his heart racing with a mixture of excitement and confusion. Hidden [paths] are extremely powerful; one of his great-grandpa''s paths was one, but it had a weird requirement in order to level them up. Azriel opened the notification to gain more details, and a window opened up.
[Outworlder]
- The Outworlder Path is bestowed upon individuals transported from their original world into a new one, unlocking powers derived from their unique, trans-dimensional journey. Outworlders are deeply attuned to the unfamiliar energies and magics of the realms they now inhabit. They gain extraordinary adaptability, allowing them to navigate strange lands and face supernatural challenges with skills that reflect the intersection of their past and present worlds.
|
- Discovery and Exploration: Outworlders gain XP by uncovering secrets, exploring new locations, and interacting with the world around them. Encountering new creatures, experiencing magical phenomena, or discovering hidden histories all grant them XP, as these experiences help them bond with the new world.
- Cultural Integration: Outworlders earn XP by immersing themselves in local customs, languages, and skills. By forming bonds with local characters, learning skills from mentors, or adopting local arts and traditions, they forge a personal connection with their new world, advancing their understanding and control of its energies.
- Adaptation Challenges: An Outworlder must face moments of crisis or adaptation. They gain XP from successfully overcoming significant challenges tied to the foreign world, like withstanding magical effects, surviving unfamiliar terrain, or confronting creatures that test their limits.
|
Skills
- Anomalous Insight: You gain an instinctual understanding of new cultures, creatures, and magic systems, enabling them to quickly adapt to the rules and mysteries of any realm they find themselves in. You receive bonuses to perception, language comprehension, and cultural Awareness, often feeling an eerie familiarity in strange places.
- Resonant Aura: Exposure to different realms has altered their very essence, granting Outworlders a resonance with foreign magics and powers. You gain natural resistance to unusual effects like mind control, illusions, or planar influence, making them especially resilient in your adopted world.
|
|
Outworlder Trait
Unbound: Your original world''s system couldn''t limit your abilities; why should this world''s system be able to do the same? You are immune to hindering effects from this world''s systems, such as [Arts] and [Spells] unless you allow the effect to take place. |
The [Outworlder] path''s requirements for leveling it were quite generous, and the skills and attribute point gains were amazing. Many questions were lingering in his mind. Why did he gain this [path] just now? [Paths] to Azriel''s knowledge were matters of intent, action, identity, and time. Of course, he had no intent to become an "outworlder" being forcibly teleported by his great-grandpa''s action. Still, it is his identity that he is a foreigner in this world, even though he knows a lot about it. According to the [path], he should have had it as soon as he finished the system integration, so time wasn''t an issue.
"Well, that''s for me to deal with in the future," Azriel said as he turned the wolf bodies. "It''s time to try this new looting function."
Do you wish to loot Shadow Wolf x3?
Yes / No
Azriel hit yes with a mental command, and then the window disappeared. The monster corpses began turning into black vapor. It was a moment when he began to regret his extremely high Awareness. Despite Awareness being a spirit attribute, his five physical senses were also amplified, the most intense being his smell. As soon as the smell of rotted eggs combined with burnt popcorn entered his nose, he nearly vomited on the floor.
"Jesus Christ!" He covered his nose from the smell, but it did little to protect him from the smell. After some time, the wolves'' corpses disappeared completely; he checked the notification.
3 Shadow Pelts
3 Days Worth of Wolf Meat
54 Shadow Wolf Claws
3 Shadow Essences
Azriel''s eyes drift over his inventory, inspecting each item with interest. The Shadow Pelts catch his attention first, folded and dark as midnight, their silken fur faintly shimmering with a bluish tint, promising warmth and protection against the elements. Nearby are the icons for Wolf Meat, three days'' worth of dark red cuts, each wrapped in sturdy cloth and gleaming with freshness, ready to sustain him on his journey. The Shadow Wolf Claws, a collection of sleek, midnight-black talons, appear sharp and curved, each claw edged with a smoky aura that hints at their magical potency, perhaps useful for crafting. Finally, his gaze lands on the Shadow Essences: dark, polished spheres holding twisting tendrils of shadow and faint glimmers of purple as if containing the spirits of the fallen wolves.
Azriel''s smile replaced his earlier disgust from the smell of looting. There are lots of worthwhile materials for a craftsman if he sells, but the best thing from the loot was the multiple essences he received. Essences can be used to upgrade a current [path] or gain a new [path] when reaching level 10 in one of the two [paths] he currently had. He wondered for a second if he could use it for himself; suddenly, the Nighthawk Codex appeared, flipped open, and shot a beam best described as a barcode scanner. After it finished, the least unusual new function was that Azriel was still not using the codex to page, and a new window appeared in his vision.
Essence Path Analysis Complete
- [Outworlder]: 0 Path Options Available at Level 10 if a Shadow Essence is absorbed.
- [Warrior]: 5 Path Options Available at Level 10 if a Shadow Essence is absorbed
- You meet the requirements 4/5 for a new [Path]
- Descent of a phoenix
- Born under a Blood Moon (aka Lunar Escplise)
- Shadow Essence
- Skill: Mentality of Nemesis
- Absorb Shadow Essence, then kill 30 with high amounts of sapience beings with no regrets.
|
Azriel looked at the analysis summary and was a little disappointed that, when he reached level 10, there weren''t many options available for the [paths] he currently uses. When he looked at the final [Path] option, he didn''t know why, but he felt excited. Even after reading the final requirement, he felt strangely okay with completing it. Shaking the feeling off, he closed both his inventory menu and the codex with a mental command. The codex shut itself close and vanished, then continued walking through the forest, pulling the hood of the jacket up.
"Besides the looting smell problem, it is not a bad first monster encounter."
***
Under the bright daylight, a small girl with striking white hair marked by tiger-like stripes darted through the forest. Her tiger ears twitched as she ran, her combat robes fluttering a dark blue top with a storm motif and black pants designed for movement. Behind her, shadows moved, and yokai of all shapes and sizes gave chase.
Ahead, her mother, with black hair streaked with a single white stripe, turned briefly. She raised her sword, which crackled with energy. With fierce precision, she swung the blade, sending beams of lightning surging back toward the creatures.
"Yuki, duck!" her mother shouted, her voice both urgent and reassuring. Without hesitation, Yuki dropped low just as a crackling bolt blazed over her head, scattering their pursuers with a blinding flash. When Yuki looked up, terror froze her heart. A Dodomeki, a monstrous yokai with countless black eyes dotting its clawed, elongated arms, had driven its talon into her mother''s back. Her mother staggered, blood spilling from her lips as she gasped, the creature''s twisted smile deepening as its myriad eyes, soulless and unblinking, fixated on Yuki.
"NO!" Yuki cried, her fear igniting into fury. Lightning sparked to life around her small clenched fists, crackling and pulsing with raw energy. She launched herself forward, striking the Dodomeki with everything she had. Her fists erupted into bolts of electricity as she pushed against the beast, her heart roaring with every spark.
Yuki''s heart pounded as she rushed to her mother''s side, her hands trembling as she reached down to help her up. Despite the wound, her mother gave a faint, determined nod, gripping Yuki''s hand with surprising strength. Together, they forced themselves forward, weaving through the dense forest, dodging branches, and leaping over roots. The ominous cries of yokai echoed behind them, growing fainter with every step. Yuki''s focus never wavered; her senses heightened as they ran, lightning still sparking faintly around her fists, ready to strike again if needed.

Azriel stood in the middle of a clearing within the Yokai forest, surrounded by many dead Shadow Wolves. For some reason, the wolves kept attacking him in droves; he did
Azriel stood in the center of the field, catching his breath as the last of the shadow wolves faded into wisps of dark mist around him. His chest heaved, exhilaration pulsing through him with each beat. His power had surged with multiple level-ups from the relentless waves of wolves. He felt stronger, sharper, each level-up fueling his newfound abilities like a fire just beneath his skin.
But a nagging thought crept in as he scanned the empty field, frowning. Why had so many shadow wolves attacked him all at once? He knew that the yokai of this forest were territorial, but this felt different, almost as if he¡¯d been deliberately lured here. The hairs on the back of his neck prickled, and he turned his gaze to the tree line; he saw four glowing red eyes lurking in the shadows.
Azriel¡¯s gaze sharpened as he spotted four menacing, red eyes glowing from the darkness beyond the tree line. Emerging from the shadows was a colossal shadow wolf, far larger than any he had fought before, its fur bristling like jagged shadows. Behind it, more wolves prowled silently, their own eyes gleaming with eerie intent.
¡°Oh, so you¡¯re the leader of the pack, huh?¡± Azriel called out, his voice edged with defiance as he faced the enormous shadow wolf with its piercing, crimson eyes. The beast snarled in response, muscles coiling as it prepared to charge, its pack fanning out in a wide circle behind their Alpha. Without warning, the giant shadow wolf lunged forward, covering the distance between them in a heartbeat. Its jaws snapped open, teeth glinting like razors in the dim light. Azriel barely had time to react, raising Myth Maker to block as the beast¡¯s force crashed against him, its claws swiping dangerously close.
Azriel staggered back under the force of the shadow wolf¡¯s relentless assault. The beast was faster than he¡¯d anticipated, each strike fierce and precise, forcing him to defend at a pace that made his arms ache. He could feel the strain with every parry, each snap of the wolf¡¯s fangs grazing closer to his skin. It was almost as if it knew his every move before he made it, and for a moment, doubt crept into this creature that might overpower him.
As the wolf lunged again, Azriel drew on the power within Myth Maker, letting the weapon''s energy pulse through him. With renewed determination, he sidestepped a vicious claw strike, bringing his gunblade up to deliver a powerful counter. The blade connected with the creature¡¯s shadowy flank, causing it to howl in pain. Shadows dispersed from the wound like ink in water, but the wolf snarled and rebounded, circling him with a wave of wary anger. Azriel could feel the tides beginning to shift; he was faster now, and his strikes were landing with more impact.
Adaptation has activated combat ability has improved.
The wolf charged once more, but this time, Azriel met its advance with unwavering confidence. He sidestepped the beast¡¯s teeth, swung around, and delivered a blow to its back with his gunblade, a surge of light bursting from the blade. The shadow wolf yelped, stumbling under the assault, and Azriel pressed his advantage, each strike now precise and fueled by the growing strength inside him. The pack in the shadows grew hesitant, sensing their leader¡¯s weakening power, and Azriel knew this was his moment to turn the fight in his favor.
¡°[Stun Bullet]!¡± he shouted, firing his gunblade in a flash of violet light. The blast struck the alpha dead center, and the beast stumbled, its body seizing momentarily. Azriel seized the opportunity, rushing in to slash at its side with a fierce strike, every blow fueling his momentum.
|
[Stun Bullet]
A Stun Bullet is a specialized round infused with mana designed to incapacitate rather than kill. When fired, it delivers a concussive shock that disrupts the target¡¯s nervous system, leaving them momentarily paralyzed or disoriented. With each level gained in the skill, both the stun duration and the number of targets affected increase.
|
¡°It¡¯s over!¡± Azriel shouted, his voice filled with confidence as he watched the alpha wolf stagger back, its eyes dimming. But before he could deliver the final blow, a searing pain exploded in his back. A shadow wolf had launched itself from the perimeter of the pack, sinking its claws deep into his flesh. The attack sent him crashing to the ground, and his health bar plummeted by half in an instant.
Azriel staggered to one knee, the world blurring around him for a brief moment as he looked at his health, which was represented by a red bar and mana, a blue bar flashing at the corner of his vision. His heart raced, his breath shallow. Half of my health, he thought bitterly, anger bubbling up from within. The wolves circled, sensing weakness, their growls louder, more taunting.
Suddenly, a notification window flickered in his vision:
[Mentality of Nemesis] has activated.
Strength and Presence have increased by 200%.
***
Hours before, the Alpha shadow wolf sat in the dark shadows of his cave, the eerie glow of his glowing red eyes the only source of light. His pack had always been strong, territorial, and feared by all who ventured too close. But there was something different in the air today. A strange feeling had washed over him as he watched several figures draped in dark robes making their way slowly toward the border of his territory. These figures were not like the humans who typically wandered into his domain; these were more deliberate and focused, as if they had a purpose.
The Alpha¡¯s mind whirled with thoughts of these strange, robed individuals. His instincts told him that they were not ordinary humans. Something was off. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up as he stared into the darkness, his thoughts interrupted by a sharp rustling outside his cave. A wolf emerged, its fur ruffled, breathing heavily from the chase.
"Leader, there¡¯s a human," the young shadow wolf said, its voice heavy with tension. "A strange one. He¡¯s been killing members of the pack... one by one. Stronger than any we¡¯ve encountered. I barely escaped with my life."
The Alpha''s eyes narrowed. A human? In his domain? His pack was formidable, and no human could ever hope to challenge them. But this one was different. The wolf continued, its tail tucked between its legs.
"I tracked him. He''s not like the others. He fights with some unnatural power. I couldn¡¯t get close enough to attack. He¡¯s fast, too fast, and has some strange abilities. His aura is overwhelming. He¡¯s like nothing I''ve ever felt before."
The Alpha stood slowly, his sharp claws scraping against the stone floor as he processed this information. His curiosity peaked. A human who could kill his pack? Something had to be done. Without a word, the Alpha growled lowly, signaling the wolf to lead him to this intruder.
With fluid movements, the Alpha followed the wolf as it led him through the dense forest. As they approached the location, the Alpha used his abilities to cloak himself, blending into the surroundings, his form melding with the shadows. He watched from afar as the human, strong, focused, yet distinctly mortal, killed another of his pack; the man¡¯s odd weapon was a blur of motion.
The Alpha''s eyes gleamed with quiet intrigue as he observed the human¡¯s movements. There was no fear, no hesitation. The man was ruthless, calculating, and driven by something deeper than simple survival. The Alpha knew then this was no ordinary human. He was something to be reckoned with, a force of nature.
The Alpha waited in the shadows, his glowing red eyes fixed on the human. The battle had begun, and the human stood tall, sword in hand, his movements sharp and confident. The Alpha had watched him carefully, studying his fighting style. He was strong, undeniably so, but the Alpha could see the signs of hesitation, the brief moments of uncertainty. This will be easy, he thought to himself.
The Alpha lunged forward with a roar, his massive claws slicing through the air with deadly precision. The human was quick, dodging to the side, but the Alpha¡¯s speed was unmatched. A strike here, a swipe there, and the human stumbled back. His defense was solid but not perfect. The Alpha grinned, feeling the surge of victory course through him.
"You''re strong, human, but you cannot defeat me," the Alpha growled, his voice deep and menacing.
For a moment, the Alpha was right. His attacks were faster and stronger, and the human was beginning to show signs of wear. He landed a blow to the human¡¯s side, and blood splattered onto the ground. The human grimaced but refused to retreat, tightening his grip on his weapon.
But then, something shifted.
The human''s stance changed, becoming more calculated and precise. His eyes narrowed, and his breathing became more controlled, like a hunter sensing the smallest movements of its prey. The Alpha felt a change in the air, a shift in energy. The human was adapting, learning, and adjusting to the Alpha¡¯s fighting style. What had been an easy fight was now turning into something far more dangerous.
The Alpha growled, frustrated, and pushed harder. His claws raked through the air, each attack coming faster, harder than the last. But the human was no longer scrambling. Instead, he met each strike with a counter, each movement a mirror of the Alpha¡¯s own. Where the Alpha had once been in control, now he found himself reacting, dodging and blocking the human¡¯s relentless advances.
The Alpha snarled, anger rising within him. He had yet to expect this level of adaptability. The challenge was exhilarating, unlike anything he had ever faced. For the first time in his long life, he felt the true thrill of battling a worthy opponent. But as the fight dragged on, the Alpha began to feel the sting of fatigue. The human¡¯s endurance seemed endless, his movements growing sharper with every passing second.
"Impressive," the Alpha admitted with a growl, his voice laced with both admiration and frustration. "But it will not be enough."
And yet, even as he spoke, he knew that the human was not far from pushing him to his limits. The Alpha¡¯s instinct for dominance was fierce, but this human, this strange, relentless human, was a challenge like no other. And for the first time in a long while, the Alpha realized he might not be the one in control of this fight.Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation.
The one-pack members attacked from behind. The Alpha growled, its muscles tensing in frustration as it watched the human stumble from the sneak attack. Its pack had taken the opportunity to strike, but that attack, that cheap shot, irked the Alpha. It wasn¡¯t the way it wanted to win.
It had been intrigued by this human, fascinated by his strength and adaptability. At first, the challenge had been thrilling. The human had fought back, using his skill and ferocity in ways the Alpha hadn¡¯t anticipated. The battle had been exhilarating, pushing the Alpha to its limits, but now? Now, it felt cheated.
The Alpha wanted a fair fight to prove its dominance through strength alone. Instead, its pack resorted to underhanded tactics, ambushing the human when his focus was on the leader. It was a cowardly move that the Alpha did not respect.
Its eyes narrowed, glaring at the wolf who had made the sneak attack. The Alpha''s fur bristled, a deep growl rumbling in its chest as it stepped forward, its fangs bared. The pack watched in silence, sensing their leader¡¯s displeasure. This wasn¡¯t a victory; it was a mockery.
But then something shifted. The human¡¯s eyes flared with an intense glow, his body rising as though drawn by some unseen force. The Alpha''s willpower faltered as it realized this human wasn¡¯t just fighting for survival; he was fighting for something more. The Alpha watched as the human raised his odd weapon.
¡°[Astral Barrage]¡±
The Alpha¡¯s fur bristled as it saw the human speak those chilling words. The air around the human seemed to warp, bending unnaturally as ripples in space shimmered into existence. The very fabric of reality twisted, an eerie, almost otherworldly energy crackling at the edge of his weapon. At that moment, a wave of unease swept over the Alpha. It could feel the power raw, unpredictable pulsing from the human, the same human who had been a mere mortal moments ago, a challenging but manageable foe. Now, in this instant, he was something more. Something that made the Alpha¡¯s instincts scream at it to flee. But it was too late.
With a snap of his fingers, the air exploded, and the space around them fractured. A barrage of destructive energy, forged from the very stars themselves, rained down in an unpredictable storm of light and force. The Alpha¡¯s pack howled in terror as they were shredded apart in an instant, their forms disintegrating into nothingness under the onslaught.
The Alpha could only watch, frozen in place, as its pack was annihilated. A few scattered cries echoed, but the barrage quickly silenced them. The ripples in space continued to spread, tearing through everything in their path with brutal efficiency. The wolves that had once filled the battlefield were now little more than memories, fragments of fur and black scattered across the ground.
As the last of the pack fell, the Alpha stood, its heart pounding, its red eyes wide with disbelief. Fear surged through it, mingling with a desperate, primal instinct to survive. Many foes had tested it in its long life, but never had it felt such pure power directed at it. The human, the one who had been so easy to underestimate, stood in the center of the carnage, his weapon still crackling with power, his eyes cold and calculating. The Alpha snarled, but there was no defiance in its voice, only a reluctant recognition.
This human was not like the others.
In the face of the human¡¯s wrath, the Alpha was no longer a conqueror. It was a hunted beast.
And now, it was just trying to survive.
***
Azriel stood amidst the battlefield ruins, his breath steadying as the adrenaline began to ebb. The sound of crackling energy faded into the distance, leaving only the faint scent of scorched earth and blood in the air. His hand tightened around the grip of his gunblade, the weapon still humming softly though the fight had long since ended. The once-strong pack of shadow wolves lay around him, their bodies torn apart by the force of his attack.
The weight of the battle slowly sank in, and he took a deep breath, feeling the exhaustion setting in, his body sore from the relentless struggle. He glanced at the notifications flashing before him, but his eyes focused on the now-dimming energy in his core, the strength that had surged within him moments ago fading away.
He exhaled slowly, surveying the devastation he had caused. The leader of the pack, the one who had seemed so confident moments before, was now nowhere to be found. A small part of Azriel felt a flicker of satisfaction at the thought of the wolf retreating in fear, but it quickly dissipated. That wasn''t the kind of victory he was after. He had only survived because he had pushed beyond his limits, tapping into something he still didn''t fully understand.
Azriel turned, his thoughts momentarily clouded by the feeling that there was more to this battle than he''d realized. These wolves hadn''t just been attacking him; they''d been testing him, perhaps even driven by something more than simple hunger. But now, in the aftermath, that thought seemed distant. All that mattered was that he''d emerged victorious, though he couldn''t shake the feeling that this wouldn''t be the last time something or someone would come for him in this world. A soft voice suddenly broke his reverie.
"You did well."
Azriel turned to see a figure step from the shadows of the trees. It was a woman with white hair who stepped into the clearing with an aura of quiet strength. Her hair, stark white and almost ethereal, cascaded down her back in soft waves, contrasting with the dark green of the forest around her. A few faint tiger-like stripes ran through her hair, blending into the silvery strands in an almost otherworldly pattern. Her ears, subtly pointed, gave her an air of something not entirely human, adding to the mystery surrounding her.
Her eyes, a deep shade of emerald, gleamed with a sense of wisdom far beyond her apparent age, though her youthful appearance suggested she was no older than her early twenties. The faint glow in her eyes was almost invisible but intensified whenever she focused on something of importance as if attuned to things others could not see. Her posture was relaxed but graceful, exuding an innate confidence that came from years of survival and knowledge.
She wore simple yet practical combat robes, a deep, dark blue top embroidered with intricate patterns resembling storm clouds paired with form-fitting black pants that allowed her to move swiftly and quietly through the woods. A faint silver sheen ran through the fabric, hinting at hidden enchantments or materials meant to aid in stealth or protection. A katana, sheathed at her side, was the only weapon visible, though its polished edge suggested it had been used in many battles.
"Who are you?" Azriel asked, not losing his grip on his weapon.
"Someone who was watching... and waiting," the woman smiled slightly. She stepped closer, her gaze flicking to the fallen wolves. "It¡¯s rare to see someone handle the Shadow Wolves so efficiently, especially the alpha."
"It¡¯s not something I expected.¡±
¡°It¡¯s always the way of these things. You think you¡¯re in control, and then they pull something out of their sleeve," the woman chuckled softly, her green eyes glowing faintly in the dim light.
¡°Yeah, I¡¯m getting real tired of that. This world¡¯s got a way of keeping me on my toes,¡± Azriel sighed and slung his gunblade over his shoulder.
"You¡¯ll find this world will test you like that. Every step forward, something is waiting to knock you back." Her tone was almost sympathetic
¡°I¡¯m used to that. What I¡¯m not used to is being blindsided,¡± Azriel said. ¡°That damn wolf got me good should¡¯ve been faster.¡±
¡°You did well enough,¡± she replied, her voice steady and calm. ¡°But next time, don¡¯t be afraid to finish what you start. Don¡¯t let yourself hesitate. The moment you doubt, the moment they¡¯ll strike.¡±
. ¡°I won¡¯t. I¡¯ll be ready next time. And next time, I won¡¯t give anyone a chance to surprise me,¡± Azriel said, clenching his fists.
The woman nodded, her eyes piercing into him for a moment before she turned away.
"Good. You¡¯ll need that resolve.¡±
Azriel took a moment to gather himself, and the adrenaline finally started to leave his system. With a final glance at the fallen wolves, he turned to the woman.
"What¡¯s next then? We¡¯re both here. You might as well tell me what you¡¯re really after."
She didn¡¯t answer right away, but when she did, her voice was laced with a quiet intensity.
¡°The path you¡¯re on is not as simple as surviving these wolves. There¡¯s something much darker, much larger at play in this forest. And soon, you¡¯ll be dragged into it whether you want to be or not."
Azriel¡¯s brow furrowed, but before he could respond, she disappeared into the forest, leaving him alone with his thoughts.
¡°Darker... larger¡¡± he muttered to himself, ¡°Isekai great destiny trope, yay.¡±
Shaking his head, Azriel reached for the loot from the fallen creatures, his hands still a little shaky from the fight. He had a long road ahead of him, and the power he''d just tasted was only a small glimpse of what this new world might hold. One thing was clear: his journey was far from over. Whatever was coming, he had no choice but to face it head-on. One thought surfaces at the forefront after thinking about isekai tropes.
¡°There better not be a demon lord waiting for me.¡±

Chapter 8: Skybreaker
Kazuto Yamato sat cross-legged on a worn wooden porch, the quiet creak of the boards beneath him the only sound in the otherwise silent, abandoned village. His crimson skin gleamed faintly in the slanted sunlight filtering through the trees, adding an eerie glow to his sharp features. His long black hair was tied back with an ornate clasp, a relic of his lineage, as it symbolized his Rank within his family and was a subtle reminder of his birthright and ambition. He wore deep red robes with subtle, intricate patterns woven into the fabric, a nod to his heritage from Chunhwa, yet practical enough for his new life in exile.
Kazuto lifted a delicate cup to his lips, savoring the aroma of the tea as he gazed out at the forest, his expression calm but with an unmistakable fire in his eyes. This village, left to rot in the heart of the Kazehana forests, suited him well; it was quiet, away from prying eyes, and held the isolation he required to amass power. Here, away from the watchful gaze of his father and siblings, he plotted his rise. One day, he would claim the seat his father now held, proving himself worthy of the title Heavenly Demon.
Just then, a figure appeared in the doorway, moving with a practiced, silent grace. His ally Yuta, dressed in simple but sturdy travel clothes, knelt and bowed, respecting Kazuto¡¯s authority even here in the wilderness. Kazuto set his cup down with a soft clink, his piercing gaze shifting to meet his ally¡¯s.
"Report," he said, his voice smooth and commanding, with an edge that demanded obedience. He folded his hands neatly, a slight smile playing at his lips, anticipating the news of each detail a step forward in his plan.
Yuta raised his head, his expression grave as he met Kazuto''s gaze.
"Lord Kazuto, our Dodomeki allies have encountered an unusual development," he began, choosing his words carefully. "They found the Kaiju child, the rumored offspring of that exiled clan, and she was with her mother, who is now severely weakened."
Kazuto¡¯s interest sharpened at the mention of the Kaiju child. So, the rumors were true. He leaned forward, his dark eyes gleaming with intrigue as his ally continued.
"Her mother was struck by one of the Dodomeki¡¯s claws during their encounter. The poison is spreading rapidly. They narrowly escaped, but her strength was fading by the hour. The Dodomeki leader has confirmed she won¡¯t last without intervention."
Kazuto considered this, his mind already racing through the implications. The Kaiju child''s survival could shift the balance in more ways than one, and a poisoned mother on the edge of death presented opportunities. He tapped a finger against the edge of his teacup, his slight smile widening.
"Interesting," he murmured, his tone deceptively calm. "Ensure the Dodomekis keep their distance but do nothing more for now. Let the poison do its work. But keep a close eye on the girl. If she seeks help, I want to know every step she takes."
Yuta bowed deeply, his understanding clear. As he rose to leave, Kazuto¡¯s voice stopped him once more.
"And the Astral Dragon?" Kazuto asked, his voice low but charged with the weight of expectation. "Have we located it yet?"
His ally looked down, hesitating for a brief moment before responding. "My lord, we''ve found no direct sighting. However, there are traces of intense astral mana accumulating near the Shadow Wolf territory. The reason for this surge is... still unknown."
Kazuto''s fingers drummed rhythmically on the table, his mind already piecing together the implications. The Astral Dragon, elusive and immense, was one of the few forces that could shift his plans if it decided to involve itself. And now, signs of its mana this close to his operations?
After a moment¡¯s consideration, Kazuto raised a hand, signaling restraint.
"Leave it alone," he said quietly yet firmly. "The Astral Dragon is not something to provoke needlessly. However, should it come any closer, I want to know immediately. Its presence could alter everything."
The ally nodded, accepting the warning in Kazuto¡¯s voice. As he turned to leave, Kazuto let a faint smirk cross his face, hidden from view. The forest held many secrets tonight, secrets he was prepared to exploit.
***
As night began to settle over the forest, Azriel moved through the trees, following the tracks left by the alpha wolf. The fading light cast long shadows across the ground, and the air grew cooler, the silence around him dense and unbroken. Each step brought him closer to the creature¡¯s lair, a place he expected to find some trace of its pack, perhaps a den, remnants of past meals, and signs of their dominance over the area. But when he arrived, he was met with an unexpected sight.
The mouth of the cave gaped open in the dim light, wide and foreboding yet strangely still. Azriel took a cautious step inside, and his senses heightened and strained to detect any presence. The interior was empty. There were no signs of wolves, no fresh scents, not even the usual mess left by such creatures. It was as though the pack had never been here at all.
Azriel frowned, running a hand along the cold stone walls. The silence felt unnatural, and his instincts prickled, alerting him to the possibility of something larger at play. "Where did you all go?" he murmured under his breath, his voice barely audible in the cavernous space. The alpha wolf had clearly led him here, its tracks ending directly at the cave entrance. But it seemed as if the pack had vanished without a trace.
Tightening his grip on his weapon, Azriel stood in stillness, his eyes scanning the shadows for any movement. Whatever was happening in this forest was more than simple ambushes, based on what the strange woman had said earlier. He had stumbled into a web much larger than he had imagined.
Azriel sighed, the weight of the situation pressing down on him. The eerie emptiness of the cave didn''t sit well with him, but there was little choice. The night was quickly drawing in, and he wasn¡¯t about to venture deeper into unknown territory with the shadows of the forest closing in.
¡°I¡¯ll stay here for the night,¡± he muttered to himself, his voice echoing slightly in the cavern. ¡°Maybe I¡¯ll get some answers in the morning.¡±
He found a relatively flat area near the back of the cave and settled down, leaning against the stone wall. The cold seeped into his bones, but his jacket and the armor underneath kept most of the chill at bay. Azriel stretched out and made himself comfortable. The dim light from the dying day filtered in, casting long shadows across the cave floor. After some time, he opened the notifications that he had put on hold until he was truly in the clear after the battle. System windows came pouring out; there were so many in his face that Azriel found it debilitating. With a thought, he focused all of the notifications into a single window.

Azriel examined his new title, Wolf Killer, and a touch of pride swelled in his chest as he considered his advancement. But the question nagged at him, and he hadn¡¯t actually slain the alpha. Was it simply because of the number of shadow wolves he¡¯d defeated? He furrowed his brow, wondering what could have awarded him this distinction without taking down the pack leader.
With curiosity getting the better of him, he reached for the Nighthawk Codex that appeared in his hand. Azriel brushed his fingers over its ethereal, nebula-patterned cover as he opened it. Arthur Nighthawk, his great-grandpa, said the Codex was a guidebook to Astraquilla.
"Maybe this thing knows," he muttered, flipping the Codex open. The Codex¡¯s text began shifting and reforming before his eyes. A new window appears in his vision.
What information do you wish to inquire about?
¡°Methods of receiving the title Wolf Killer,¡± Azriel said as more of a statement rather than a question. The window that appeared from the Codex closed, and Azriel began flipping through its pages. Azriel noticed that despite the book¡¯s size, which made it look the same size as a textbook he had in high school, which was around 300 to 450 pages, it was going through more and more pages. It¡¯s distorting to keep watching because of his enhanced sight; he decided to take out the Myth Maker from his inventory.
Azriel noticed that even after all the monsters he cut down, the blade part of it wasn¡¯t dull in the slightest. His grandmother Akari, from his mother¡¯s side, taught him almost everything about swords. Akari, in his eyes, was a modern-day samurai despite her age. Whenever he saw her during a holiday, his grandmother would either cut a tatami mat or clean a katana she used for something his mother told him and his siblings never to ask about. When she learned he wasn¡¯t in a sport, she forced him to practice kendo with her, which taught him something about swinging a sword. He also learned his grandmother gets very excited when fighting.
¡°How does an old woman move that fast and hit that hard,¡± he muttered as he looked over the gunblade. The silver of the gun portion still looked polished, and the short razor-edged blade of jet-black metal didn¡¯t look discolored.
Inquiry Complete
Azriel looked towards the Codex after hearing the word in his mind. He now hoped to get his answers. Azriel skimmed through the requirements, his eyes widening slightly as he took in each line.

"A hundred wolves," he murmured, shaking his head in slight disbelief. He¡¯d fought and taken down so many in such a short span without realizing how high the count had risen. The Pack Alpha requirement made him pause, recalling the fierce battle that still echoed in his muscles.
¡°So, it wasn¡¯t just the numbers,¡± he mused, closing the Codex and letting out a thoughtful breath. "Guess it takes a bit more than swinging a sword." The Codex''s intricate guidelines underscored what the title represented, not just slaying wolves but surviving the brutal odds and even learning the patience required for tracking.
As Azriel moved to close the Codex, a faint chime echoed in his mind, halting his hand. A new system window flared into view, casting a soft glow.

Azriel pulls the Stormlight Essence from his inventory, his fingers brushing against the smooth, cool surface of the glowing orb. The faint scent of rain and ozone fills the air around him as he watches the silver sphere hum with barely contained energy. Blue lightning streaks through the heart of the orb, and the feeling of raw power radiates from it, almost like a storm waiting to be unleashed. He holds it for a moment, feeling the pulse against his palm, a brief surge of vitality rushing through him, as though the very storm inside is feeding his body, invigorating him with each breath.
The orb¡¯s glow is soft but powerful, like the calm before the chaos of a thunderstorm. The air around him seems to crackle, and Azriel can almost feel the electrical charge in the atmosphere. He wonders what kind of power the essence can unleash once fully tapped into. I can have [Path] evolution with this, he thought.
¡°The Path you¡¯re on is not as simple as surviving these wolves¡ And soon, you¡¯ll be dragged into it whether you want to be or not," the mysterious woman¡¯s voice from before chimes in his head. She made it clear that Azriel needed more power to survive what would happen next.
Which [Path] would you like to evolve?
Azriel only had two [paths] to choose from [Warrior] and [Outwolder]. [Outwolder] grew way too slow and didn¡¯t know much about the [Path] in the first place. There''s only one real choice, he thought.
You have chosen [Warrior] for [Path Evolution]. Are you sure?
¡°Yes, I¡¯m sure,¡± Azriel said into the open. After confirming his choice, the Stormlight Essence melted and then seeped into his skin. He felt a small tingle in his fingers that traveled throughout his whole body. After a few moments, the feeling disappeared. Well, that wasn¡¯t all that bad, he thought before falling back into his bedroll unconscious.
Due to your absorption of a cosmic-created essence and nature as a Radiantborn, your body will be reshaped.
***
Yuki and her mother, breathless from their escape, find shelter in the dense underbrush of the forest. The tall trees provide some cover, their branches swaying lightly in the cool breeze. Yuki''s mother, her expression strained, leans against a large tree, clutching her side where Dodomeki¡¯s poison still courses through her veins. Yuki kneels beside her, eyes filled with concern, her small hands gently pressing against her mother¡¯s wound in a futile attempt to slow the poison¡¯s spread.
¡°We¡¯ll be okay, Mother,¡± Yuki whispers, her voice trembling with uncertainty. Her electric powers crackle involuntarily in the air, a flicker of her frustration at their situation.
¡°We have to stay hidden... for now, Yuki. The Dodomeki won''t stop hunting us... not until we''re dead,¡± Her mother, though weak, manages a strained smile.
Yuki nods, her heart heavy but her thoughts elsewhere. Somewhere in the distance, she can feel the faint pulse of power, a strange energy stirring in the air, as if the forest itself is reacting to something unseen. She wonders if it¡¯s the Astral Dragon or perhaps something else entirely. The thought of this new presence makes her anxious but also curious.
As the minutes turn into hours, the forest grows eerily quiet. Yuki¡¯s eyes dart around, every rustle in the leaves sending a surge of adrenaline through her veins. She stays on high alert, sharpening every sense, her power bubbling under the surface as she waits for any signs of danger or hope.
***
Azriel awakens his body, which is heavy with the remnants of exhaustion from his battle with the shadow wolves. As his eyes slowly open, he blinks in disbelief. The world around him is unlike anything he¡¯s seen before. He stands on an island, the ground beneath his feet smooth and strange, as if the earth itself were made of something that defied the natural laws. The island floats in the middle of a vast, endless expanse. Above him stretches a sky filled with stars, more brilliant and numerous than he had ever imagined. There¡¯s no sun, no clouds, just an endless canvas of light and void.
He takes a step, his boots making no sound as they press into the soft, ethereal ground. The air around him is calm but thick with a palpable sense of something powerful, something ancient. The stillness has a strange weight as if the very atmosphere is pregnant with meaning. His senses are heightened, but there¡¯s no sign of life around him, not even a breeze.
"Where... am I?" Azriel mutters, his voice echoing into the vast emptiness. It¡¯s as though the island itself absorbs sound. No response.
The more he looks around, the more out of place he feels. He tries to call upon the Myth Maker, but nothing happens. There¡¯s no reaction. His abilities feel muted in this place like he¡¯s been cut off from the flow of power that sustains him.
He takes another step, moving toward the edge of the island. Below him, the stars twinkle in the depths of what appears to be an endless abyss. The air feels thick with mystery but also with an unsettling sense of something watching him. The more he stands there, the more the feeling intensifies, like the stars themselves are observing him, waiting for something.
Suddenly, a window appears in his vision, catching his attention¡ªa new system notification.
The words flash before his eyes, glowing with an eerie intensity:
"Unbound yourself and forge a new path."
Azriel furrows his brow, his mind racing to comprehend the meaning behind the message. He had no idea how he ended up in this realm or why he was being presented with such enigmatic instructions. The stars above twinkle, their light shifting as if responding to the notification, and the island beneath his feet seems to hum with subtle, otherworldly energy.
He glances at his hands, feeling an unfamiliar weight in his chest. What could "unbound" mean? He feels tethered, but to what? Was it his previous life, his purpose, or his limitations as a being in this strange world? And why was the message so cryptic? Was this another challenge?
Azriel exhales, trying to steady his racing thoughts. The air here seems to press against him, urging him to do something, to move forward. The quiet around him grows louder with the weight of unanswered questions.
Without a clear answer, Azriel steps toward the center of the island, determined to find clarity. As he moves, the world around him begins to shift. The stars flicker like a heartbeat, the ground beneath him rippling as if it were liquid, and a low hum fills the air.
As Azriel stands in the center of the island, the space around him begins to shift once again. The air grows heavier, thick with tension, as a faint metallic sound echoes through the realm. He turns, scanning his surroundings, and then his eyes widen as he notices the chains. Dozens, hundreds, maybe even thousands of chains stretch out across the land, winding and crisscrossing the sky, hanging from the stars themselves, and coiling around the edges of the island.
Each chain is made of a dark, almost translucent material that glows with a faint, unsettling light. Some chains are anchored to the ground, others suspended in mid-air, stretching off into the horizon like a vast web linking the entire realm together. The chains appear to pulse with energy, their links shimmering like they''ve been forged from some otherworldly force.
Azriel feels their weight, even without touching them. He feels tethered to each one, as though they are all connected to him in some way. The chains seem to represent something: his past, his memories, his limitations, perhaps even his fate. The sensation is suffocating, like an invisible hand grasping his heart, pulling him back.
A figure materializes in the distance, its form a silhouette against the glowing expanse of the sky. As Azriel steps closer, the figure becomes clearer, an imposing figure cloaked in shadow but with an undeniable presence that radiates power. Their eyes glimmer with an otherworldly light, and they seem to be waiting for him.
"Unbind yourself," the figure says in a voice that echoes in his mind. ¡°You must shed the limitations placed upon you; only then will you be free to choose the path you wish to walk."
Azriel stands to reach out and touch one of the chains, his fingers brushing against its shimmering surface. Suddenly, the air around him shifts, and he feels a surge of energy, something familiar yet different. A faint glow begins to emanate from the chain, and in the moment of contact, the swirling, ethereal remnants of the Stormlight Essence materialize before him. It floated in the air, shimmering with a brilliant, stormy light, its essence lingering like a cloud that refuses to dissipate.
The window before Azriel flickers with three distinct options, each radiating a different aura. Each choice resonates with the chains around him, tugging at his very being. The air grows heavy with the weight of his decision.
Chose Gravitation, Progression, Illumination
¡°Gravitation,¡± he said without thinking. The chains pulsed with a sudden, overwhelming energy. They seemed to vibrate with resistance at first as if testing his resolve, but his will was firm. He reached out and grasped the nearest chain, his fingers wrapping around its cold, metallic links.
The moment his grip tightened, the world around him seemed to shift. A surge of power ran through his body, thickening the air. The chains trembled, and with a single, forceful tug, Azriel shattered them, each link snapping like brittle glass and echoing across the empty realm. Some of the remnants of the chains crumbled to dust as the force of the explosion sent shockwaves throughout the space.
Azriel poured his willpower into the remaining fragments of chains, calling upon the lingering energy of the broken bonds. The remnants floated around him, each link vibrating with potential, remnants of the gravity he had unleashed. One by one, the shards responded, aligning as he shaped them with pure intent. They spiraled upward, merging and hardening, forming a single, monumental blade that hovered in the sky, too immense and powerful for mere mortal hands to wield conventionally.
The sword loomed overhead, embedded in the heavens like a great celestial marker, its sheer size and weight pressing down upon the earth itself. The blade, forged from an otherworldly meteorite metal, was dark and glossy, polished to the luster of obsidian, yet adorned with veins of silver that gleamed as if infused with lightning trapped inside the blade. This material seemed drawn from the stars, dense beyond anything earthbound, and within its surface, faint specks of starlight twinkled, a reminder of its cosmic origin.
The colossal blade''s edge, sharp as any mortal weapon but vast as the heavens, pierced down to the ground, sending fissures sprawling outward. Around its base, small fragments of rock and earth defied gravity, caught in a slow orbit as though bound by the sword''s gravitational pull. These shards floated in silent reverence, emphasizing the sheer power radiating from the weapon, a force that anchored it to the world with undeniable authority.
The hilt, towering upward like a column, was wrapped in elegant silver bands marked with runes, symbols of justice, willpower, and control over the forces of nature. These runes, glowing faintly with a steady blue light, pulsed with a life of their own, lending the structure an ethereal energy. The crossguard, slightly curved, resembled wings unfurled, evoking the imagery of a celestial protector.
An aura of distortion surrounded the weapon, bending light in circular waves as if even space itself was subject to the sword''s gravitational pull. The effect created a ripple in reality, subtly distorting everything that dared come near. Scattered along the blade¡¯s surface were crystal-like accents from the original meteorite, shimmering with the distant light of cosmic energy. This monumental blade seemed less a weapon and more a declaration, a symbol of power that not only controlled gravity but drew upon the heavens themselves, reaching beyond mortal realms.
What is the name of your [Path]?
¡°It¡¯s called Skybreaker,¡± Azriel said, looking upon his creation. He saw a notification and then opened it to see a new window.

Congratulations, you have forged a new [Path] through [Path Evolution]
[Warrior] has become [Skybreaker]
|
[Skybreaker]
-
- Skybreakers are warriors of raw, elemental power who wield the force of gravity as their weapon and shield. They are masters of manipulating the world''s fundamental pull, bending it to their will to crush foes, protect allies, and shape the battlefield. Each Skybreaker is bound by an innate connection to the cosmos, allowing them to harness gravitational fields, enhance their physical capabilities, and resist forces that would break others.
- +25 to all Attributes per Level
- +30 free points per Leve.
|
New Skills Acquired:
- Gravity Manipulation
- You use gravity to empower yourself, creating zones of dense, crushing force or levitating fields of near weightlessness. As you gain experience, your control over these gravitational forces increases, enabling them to immobilize enemies, pull distant objects closer, or even slow time within your localized fields.
- Scaling (Strength, Intellect, Willpower, and Awareness)
- Astral Anchor
- You root yourself in the fabric of reality, giving you increased resilience and allowing you to withstand knockback effects, intense pressure, or magical displacement. This deep connection also makes it harder to disarm, drag, or remove you from the battlefield, making them a solid and formidable presence.
- Scaling (Strength and Awareness)
|
New Arts Acquired:
- Planetary Impact
- Skybreakers can leap with enormous power, crashing down with the force of a meteor to shake the ground, cause shockwaves, and send foes reeling. At higher levels, this attack¡¯s impact zone increases, allowing the Skybreaker to affect larger groups, weaken the ground, or even create temporary gravitational wells that draw in foes.
- Void Grip
- Skybreakers can distort the gravitational pull around a target, lifting them into the air or forcing them to the ground. This skill is a powerful tool for disabling or disorienting enemies, preventing them from escaping or resisting attacks.
- Scaling (Strength and Awareness)
|
As Azriel read through the details of his newly forged Path, he felt an overwhelming surge of strength coursing through him. This new [Skybreaker] path was unlike any other, an evolution that had transcended the limits of a warrior. He was now capable of wielding gravity itself as a weapon. I¡¯m Starscourge Radahn, minus the weird brother relationship, he thought with a big smile on his face. Another window appeared, and when he finished reading it, he was stunned.

Azriel¡¯s eyes scanned the text with a mixture of awe and confusion as he absorbed the details of his transformation. Great, anything else? He thought. Then, a notification flashed in his vision.
Choose 3 Radiant Aspects to Complete your new body.
- Destruction
- Envoy
- Night
- Nimble
- Scholar
- Storm
¡°I was joking!¡± Azriel exclaimed. He sighed and began scrolling through the long list of extremely confusing names. Also, what did it mean to complete his new body?
Chapter 9: Guardian鈥檚 Light
The woman with white hair and vivid green eyes observed Azriel from her perch on a tree, the faintest smile tugging at her lips as she watched him settle into the cave. Despite her curiosity over her lady¡¯s command to watch him, she remained hidden, blending into the shadows, her gaze locked onto Azriel as he sifted through his system notifications. His reaction to receiving the unexpected cooking supplies and bedroll amused her; his slight grin, barely contained, revealed an almost childlike thrill that softened his otherwise resolute demeanor. Her chuckle was quiet, almost an echo among the trees.
Yet her amusement faded as she suddenly felt a jolt, a tug through the faint connection they shared, her breath hitching as she felt his gaze upon her, as though he somehow sensed her presence. His eyes, though seemingly fixed on Myth Maker in his hands, felt piercing, as though even while examining his weapon, he was aware of her there, veiled yet present. She froze, her grip tightening as she wondered just how much he might be sensing. Carefully, she eased back into the shadows, watching him in silence, trying to mask the spark of intrigue that now burned brighter within her.
She took a deep breath, steadying herself as she sensed a shift in his focus, his attention diverting to a new, potent artifact in his possession. She closed her eyes briefly, letting her awareness trace the item¡¯s unique aura, Stormlight Essence. Its raw energy was unmistakable, a blend of crackling power and an almost serene luminosity, carrying a weight that few essences possessed.
Watching Azriel¡¯s fascination with the essence put her at ease. She knew that this powerful, almost celestial item was now part of his journey. It held his attention fully, his careful movements around it revealing respect and curiosity as he inspected the glowing sphere, its swirling energy casting faint shadows around him. She could see him absorbing its presence, testing its weight, and marveling at the sheer force it embodied.
A sudden surge of alarm hit her as she felt his presence vanish, as though he¡¯d been plucked from the fabric of reality itself. Panic gripped her, and without a second thought, she leaped from her perch, sprinting toward the cave. Her footsteps barely made a sound as she darted between trees, her heartbeat a furious tempo against the quiet night.
Entering the cave, she felt a chill of emptiness where his presence had once been. The remnants of energy from the Stormlight Essence still hung faintly in the air, leaving an otherworldly resonance, but Azriel was nowhere to be seen. She scanned the shadows and stone, her senses straining for even the slightest trace of him, her thoughts racing.
"Azriel!" she called out softly, her voice echoing into the empty darkness of the cave. Desperation tightened her chest as she realized she¡¯d lost sight of him completely, and she clenched her fists. Whatever had pulled him from this plane had acted quickly, without warning. She swallowed back the rising fear and steeled herself, knowing she had to find out what had happened and, if possible, bring him back.
Her gaze lifted, and she froze at the sight of Azriel floating several feet above, his form now transformed into a constellation of shimmering stars and glimmering light. His body radiated with an ethereal glow, each pinpoint of starlight a testament to the power awakening within him. It was as if he was shedding his mortal form, becoming a true Radiantborn.
She reached up, her hands gentle yet firm, and slowly drew him back down to the cave floor, carefully settling him onto the bedroll he¡¯d set up earlier. The glow softened as he made contact with the ground, the starry energy calming, contained as if the very earth was anchoring him.
"Rest now, Azriel," she murmured. ¡°Your path has only just begun, and your strength will only grow from here.¡± The woman knelt beside him, brushing a stray lock of reforming hair from his face with surprising tenderness.
***
Azriel sat cross-legged on the ground, his eyes focused on the list of Radiant Forms before him. Each option seemed like an open-ended mystery, waiting for him to define what he imagined as a path, and he scratched his head in mock frustration.
"So, any recommendations on where to start?" he asked, turning to the figure standing beside him. His tone was light, teasing as if he half-expected silence in return.
"Aurora. Calamity. Evony," it replied, its voice resonating in the quiet space, calm and unwavering. Each name they said was heavy with purpose.
"Really? And why those three?" Azriel asked, with a raised eyebrow, intrigued.
"Because together they form the strongest combination," it said simply.
Azriel¡¯s eyes lingered on the figure as he mulled over the names. He could almost feel the weight of each word: Aurora, the light that pierces through darkness; Calamity, the force capable of unraveling worlds; and Envoy, a form of ancient, sovereign power meant to carry the will of realms beyond comprehension. Each one called to a different part of him, each with a strength and purpose unlike any he¡¯d felt before.
¡°It is the strongest combination, Azriel, the power to illuminate, to destroy, and to represent the very essence of the Radiantborn.¡±
Azriel looked at the options before him, taking a deep breath as he selected Aurora, Calamity, and Envoy. The choices felt monumental, as though they defined his very existence. As the selection solidified, he turned to the figure still standing beside him.
¡°Alright, enough mystery. Who are you?¡± Azriel asked his tone a mix of curiosity and suspicion.
The figure¡¯s expression softened into a knowing smile, their form shimmering faintly like a mirage.
¡°I am thou, thou art I,¡± they said, their voice calm yet resonant, echoing through the starry expanse of the realm.
Azriel blinked, his mouth opening slightly in shock before he pointed at the figure.
¡°Wait a minute, that¡¯s a¡ª¡±
In an instant, his vision blurred, and he jolted awake in the cave, lying on the bedroll. He sat up quickly, the lingering remnants of the surreal realm still vivid in his mind.
¡°¡ªa Persona reference!¡± he finished, his voice loud in the quiet cave.
"What even was that dream?" He groaned, running a hand through his hair. He looked around, noticing everything was as if he had left it, except now, his body felt strangely different.
Azriel rubbed his eyes, the lingering haze of sleep doing little to dull the surreal weight of his transformation. His body felt different, slightly heavier, yet solid, as though his muscles had gained strength overnight. He rolled his shoulders and stretched, but a faint glow in the corner of his eye caught his attention. The cave was dim, lit only by the cool light of the stars outside, but this glow wasn¡¯t from the night sky.
He turned his head, scanning the cave, then paused. The red light wasn¡¯t coming from the surroundings; it was coming from him. His heart skipped a beat. Confused, he reached up to his hair and pulled one of his dreadlocks forward. His breath caught.
Several of his dreadlocks were glowing faintly, a deep, pulsing red, like the light of embers hidden beneath the ash. The glow radiated softly, illuminating the strands with an almost ethereal vibrancy. He moved the glowing lock in front of his face, the light flickering slightly with his movements.
¡°What in the...?¡± he whispered, the words barely audible. His fingers ran over the glowing strands, feeling their warmth but no heat. The red glow painted faint patterns across the walls of the cave, casting the faintest illumination into the night. Azriel let the lock fall back into place, his other hand brushing through his hair.
¡°Alright, this is new,¡± he muttered to himself, glancing down at his glowing hair and then at his subtly more muscular form. ¡°I guess becoming a Radiantborn comes with some perks...and style changes.¡±
He chuckled softly to himself, the sound echoing faintly in the cave. The glow was subtle but unmissable, an ever-present reminder of how much had changed. As he sat back down on the bedroll, the soft red light pulsing around him, he couldn¡¯t help but feel both awe and unease at the continuous changes to him.
Azriel sighed, running a hand through his glowing dreadlocks as he tried to ground himself. With all the recent chaos, he needed a distraction, something simple, organized, and grounding. He opened his inventory, scrolling through the items until he found what he was looking for: the camping cooking set he¡¯d received as part of the Nighthawk Quest reward.
"Alright, let¡¯s see what this thing can do," he muttered, retrieving the set. A small, compact kit materialized in his hands, neatly packed with pots, pans, utensils, a small mana-powered burner, and an assortment of spices and oil.
He inspected the mana burner, tilting his head at the small, crystal-like core embedded in its base. The faint instruction manual that appeared alongside it made it clear: to activate it, he had to channel a little of his mana.
¡°Interesting,¡± Azriel mused. Placing a hand on the burner, he closed his eyes and focused. A thin thread of mana flowed from his fingertips into the core. Instantly, it flickered to life, a small blue flame dancing in the crystal. ¡°Alright, that¡¯s pretty neat.¡±
Setting the burner on the ground, Azriel began arranging the rest of the kit. He grabbed some of the shadow wolf meat from his inventory and set it on a cutting board, the raw cuts gleaming faintly as though the meat itself held residual energy. The spices and oil were laid out beside it, the rich aromas offering a comforting normalcy amidst the strange night.
As he worked, an idea struck him. The faint glow of the burner reminded him of the energy he now carried within himself. What if he infused more mana into the cooking process? It wasn¡¯t something he¡¯d ever tried before, but considering his new abilities, it felt like an intriguing experiment.
With a smirk, he concentrated, channeling a steady stream of mana into the burner. The blue flame brightened, taking on a faint reddish hue, almost matching the glow of his hair. As the wolf meat sizzled on the pan, he extended the energy further, imagining it seeping into the food itself.
The meat began to caramelize, releasing an aroma that was richer and more intense than he expected. He sprinkled on some of the spices, their scent mingling with the mana-infused heat to create an almost intoxicating fragrance.
¡°Well, this is either going to taste amazing or kill me,¡± Azriel joked to himself, flipping the meat carefully. The sizzling sound was oddly soothing, a rare moment of calm after the storm of his transformation. He leaned back for a moment, watching the meat cook and feeling an odd sense of accomplishment.
Azriel flipped the sizzling wolf meat with a flourish, watching the juices sear and caramelize in the pan. The mana-enhanced spices filled the cave with a mouthwatering aroma, and a grin tugged at the corners of his mouth. He couldn¡¯t help himself; the absurdity of the moment needed a punchline.
¡°Call me Meowscular Chef,¡± he said with a smirk, mimicking a flex as he sprinkled a dash of glowing salt over the meat, ¡°because I¡¯m out here cooking monsters.¡± Then, a sudden system notification appeared in his vision, and he opened the system window. This story has been stolen from Royal Road. Azriel blinked at the screen, then tilted his head in disbelief. He stared at the notification for a long moment before sighing and closing the window with a deliberate flick.
¡°I¡¯m not even going to ask how or why,¡± he muttered, shaking his head. ¡°I make one meal, and suddenly I¡¯m a master chef? Sure, why not? Maybe next time I¡¯ll unlock a [Path] for folding laundry.¡±
With a huff, he turned his attention back to his makeshift camp. The smell of his cooking still lingered, and despite the absurdity of his new Path, he couldn¡¯t deny the satisfaction of a well-prepared meal.
Azriel cut into the wolf steak with one of the utensils from his cooking set, a faint trail of steam escaping as the blade sliced through the meat with surprising ease. The steak¡¯s surface glistened with a subtle sheen of mana, the oils and spices he had infused during cooking forming a delicate crust.
He lifted the first piece to his mouth, hesitated briefly, then popped it in.
The flavor hit him immediately, and a rush of rich, savory essence carried the wild, untamed power of the shadow wolf. It was unlike anything he¡¯d tasted before, a perfect balance of robust gaminess and a subtle, smoky undertone. The mana he¡¯d infused seemed to heighten the flavors, adding a unique depth that bordered on ethereal.
Hints of the spices danced on his tongue: a sharp, peppery heat followed by a soothing, earthy sweetness. The oil added a buttery smoothness, while the meat itself was tender yet substantial, with just enough chew to remind him it came from a beast of formidable power.
¡°Wow¡¡± Azriel muttered, eyes widening as he chewed. The flavors continued to evolve with every bite, leaving behind a tingling sensation that spread through his body, a lingering warmth that was both comforting and refreshing.
It wasn¡¯t just delicious. It was transformative, as though the wolf¡¯s ferocity and raw energy had been distilled into a meal.
After he finished eating, he packed away his utensils and extinguished the mana-powered flame. He leaned forward and slid into his bedroll. He took off his armor and boots, tossing them into his inventory with a swipe of his hand. The fabric of the enchanted Dream Sheep bedroll enveloped him in warmth, soft as clouds.
¡°Whatever tomorrow brings¡¡± Azriel murmured as his eyelids grew heavy, ¡°At least I¡¯ll face it on a full stomach.¡±
In moments, he was out cold, the stars overhead casting a faint glow into the quiet cave.
***
The campfire crackled softly, its orange glow casting dancing shadows around the group. The circle of adventurers sat on logs and stones, sharing stories of the day¡¯s trials and triumphs. Despite the exhaustion that clung to them, there was a warmth in the air¡ªnot just from the fire but from the camaraderie forming among them.
Evie¡¯s voice carried over the murmurs as she gave her version of events, blending praise with scolding for Darius.
¡°You can¡¯t just throw out every spell you know like that! You¡¯re going to burn through your mana before it really matters.¡± She sighed, gesturing emphatically with her hands while Darius sheepishly scratched the back of his head.
¡°I was improvising!¡± he protested weakly. ¡°Besides, it worked, didn¡¯t it?¡±
¡°Barely. You¡¯re lucky Devin was there to back you up.¡± Evie said while fixing him with a glare.
Devin, sitting a little apart from the group, worked with quiet focus. The forge construct he¡¯d conjured glowed faintly, its edges sharp and efficient. With a simple gesture, it flared to life, emitting heat and light as he began shaping a piece of metal. Sparks danced in the air as his hammer struck the glowing bar, filling the camp with a rhythmic, metallic ringing.
Nearby, Harper and Eliza were joking with each other, laughter erupting between them every so often. Harper made exaggerated gestures as he recounted something ridiculous, and Eliza leaned in, her eyes alight with amusement as she bantered back.
Katsumi, however, remained detached from the lightheartedness. She sat slightly away from the others, her gaze fixed on the night sky. Her staff rested across her lap, its runes glowing, catching it faintly reacting to the stars above. The forest¡¯s mana was alive tonight, weaving through the air like a silent melody only she could hear.
She closed her eyes, her breathing slowing as she let herself feel the flow of energy. It was everywhere, crackling in the fire, vibrating in the earth beneath her, whispering through the trees. The stars above seemed to pulse in time with the rhythm, filling her with a strange mixture of serenity and purpose.
Katsumi opened her eyes, glancing back at her companions. She saw the bonds forming among them: Harper nudged Eliza playfully, Devin¡¯s determination was mirrored in Darius¡¯s admiration, and Evie¡¯s leadership kept them grounded.
Katsumi held a long, ornately carved staff. Its surface was covered in intricate, glowing runes that pulsated faintly as she gripped it. The staff''s head was adorned with a crystal orb that shimmered with the soft glow of gathered mana. She absentmindedly traced the runes with her fingers, the glow intensifying slightly under her touch.
Her gaze remained fixed on the sky, her mind attuned to the forest''s ambient energy. The staff resonated gently in her hands, a subtle hum aligning with the natural mana currents around her. It was as though the forest itself was breathing through her weapon, feeding her thoughts as she reflected on their journey.
Harper approached Katsumi, his movements casual but his concern evident.
"You okay, God-sister?" Harper asked, her tone light but genuine as she plopped down beside her.
Katsumi gave a soft laugh, leaning her staff against her shoulder.
"I¡¯m fine, Harper. I just wished we had a cook at our party, though. I could go for something better than these rations." Her lips curled into a teasing smile.
"You and your appetite, Katsumi. I¡¯ll keep that in mind next time we recruit someone. ¡®Must cook a mean stew¡¯ will be top of the requirements list." Harper chuckled, shaking her head.
They shared a laugh that broke the tension lingering in the air. After a moment, Harper¡¯s expression turned more serious, his gaze following Katsumi¡¯s toward the sky.
"But seriously, don¡¯t worry too much about that astral mana we felt earlier. Devin and Evie think it¡¯s nothing we can¡¯t handle. Plus, we¡¯ve got you."
Katsumi sighed, resting her chin on her hand.
"It¡¯s not about handling it, Harper. It¡¯s about understanding it. Astral mana doesn¡¯t just show up for no reason. But¡" She shook her head with a faint smile. "I¡¯ll drop it for now. Thanks for checking in."
[Arcane Insight] is now Level 25
"Anytime, God-sister. Now, come on, you¡¯re missing out on Darius trying to explain why fireballing a tree was tactically genius." Harper grinned and nudged her shoulder.
Katsumi let out a soft sigh, releasing the tension in her shoulders. She reached for her staff, gripping it tightly as though drawing strength from the smooth, familiar wood. Closing her eyes for a moment, she centered herself, the flow of mana around her easing into a gentle rhythm.
When she opened her eyes, her gaze found Harper¡¯s warm smile, and she couldn¡¯t help but smile back.
¡°Alright, God-sister, let¡¯s see what chaos Darius is stirring up this time.¡±
Harper laughed, standing and offering her a hand. ¡°That¡¯s the spirit! Come on, you can help me back him up or at least keep Evie from throwing her shoe at him.¡±
Katsumi took his hand, letting him pull her to her feet. As they walked back toward the campfire, the lively sounds of their group grew louder. Eliza was leaning into Harper¡¯s earlier quip, teasing Darius about his ¡°innovative¡± battle strategies, while Devin hammered away at something in his conjured forge, the rhythmic clangs punctuating the conversation. Katsumi slipped into the circle, and Evie immediately noted her presence, giving her a knowing glance.
¡°All good?¡± Evie asked softly, her scolding of Darius momentarily paused.
¡°All good. Just needed a moment.¡± Katsumi nodded, settling in beside her.
¡°Glad you¡¯re back,¡± Evie said with a smile before turning her attention back to Darius. ¡°Now, where was I? Oh, right, tactical genius, my foot!¡±
As the group laughed and bantered, Katsumi found herself relaxing, the warmth of their camaraderie seeping into her. The astral mana and the worries it brought were still there, lingering at the edges of her mind, but for now, she let herself enjoy the moment grounded by the people around her.
***
Rena sat by the faint light of the dwindling campfire, her frail body trembling with each cough. She held Yuki close, gently stroking her daughter¡¯s silken hair as the girl slept soundly against her chest. Yuki¡¯s peaceful face was a stark contrast to the storm of worry and sadness swirling in Rena''s heart.
Another cough wracked her body, and Rena¡¯s free hand clutched at her chest. She closed her eyes, feeling the weight of her time slipping away. She whispered, her voice trembling but resolute.
¡°Goddess of the Guardians,¡± she began, the words carrying her hope and desperation. ¡°Please¡ send someone, anyone, to protect her. She¡¯s all I have, all I¡¯ve ever lived for. Don¡¯t let her face this world alone.¡±
Her vision blurred with tears, but her hand continued its soothing rhythm through Yuki¡¯s hair. She looked up to the sky; her whispered prayer echoing through the silence of the night.
¡°Give her someone strong¡ someone kind¡ someone who will see her light and protect it.¡±
The fire flickered, and for a fleeting moment, Rena thought she felt a warmth beyond the flames, as though the Goddess herself had heard her plea. A faint smile graced her lips as she pressed a kiss to Yuki''s forehead.
¡°Stay strong, my little star,¡± she murmured before resting her head back, her breath evening out, though her time was drawing nearer.
***
High above the mortal plane, the Goddess of the Guardians sat within her celestial domain, her essence radiating compassion and strength. Rena''s prayer reached her like a delicate thread of light, its desperation tugging at her heart. She paused her eternal vigil, her gaze softening as she peered into the world below.
Through the shimmering veil, she saw Rena, frail yet resolute, cradling her child with a love so profound it pierced even the divine. The Goddess extended her hand, weaving her celestial threads into the tapestry of fate. Her fingers danced, and the threads wove a path toward an unusual soul, a soul she recognized as belonging to the Outworlder.
In another corner of the forest, Azriel slept near his campfire, unaware of the divine gaze upon him. The Goddess observed his journey, his battles, his awakening, and the unyielding resolve that burned within him. This mortal had faced very few trials but knew he would endure; his heart bore the spark of a guardian, one who could shelter Yuki from the storms ahead.
The Goddess smiled, her voice carrying through the astral plane as she began to write. With each stroke, a quest began to take form:
[Divine Quest Sent]
Guardian¡¯s Light
A prayer has reached the heavens, pleading for a protector. A young girl, Yuki, needs a guiding hand and a shield to guard her from the shadows threatening to consume her future. Will you answer the call?
- Protect Yuki from harm.
- Ensure her safe passage through the trials ahead.
- Fulfill the dying wish of her mother.
Reward:
- A blessing from the Goddess of the Guardians.
- A Celestial Essence.
- ???
The quest shimmered in Azriel¡¯s system as the Goddess sent it with the rising dawn in mind. She whispered, her words carrying across realms.
¡°You are chosen, Outworlder. Prove that your strength is not just in battle but in compassion. When the sun rises, you will be her shield, her guide, her guardian.¡±
Satisfied, the Goddess leaned back, her gaze lingering on Rena and Yuki. She offered a silent blessing over them as the first light of dawn began to paint the horizon, signaling that fate was already in motion.
Chapter 10: Little Star
Azriel stretched, feeling oddly refreshed as he sat up in his bedroll. The softness of the Dream Sheep Bedroll had exceeded all his expectations, a far cry from the lumpy mattresses he had back on Earth. For a moment, he just lay there, staring up at the dimly lit cave ceiling, savoring the unfamiliar but welcome sensation of comfort.
¡°Man, if this is what camping feels like in this world, I¡¯m not going back to an Earth mattress,¡± he muttered, cracking his neck. As he sat up, he gave a contented sigh, brushing some of his glowing red dreadlocks from his face. His stomach growled, and he instinctively opened his inventory, thinking about the wolf meat he¡¯d cooked the previous night.
"Time to play Monster Chef again," he said with a smirk, already pulling out his cooking set. However, just as he reached for the utensils, a chime sounded in his system, and a notification appeared in the corner of his vision. Azriel groaned, flopping back onto the bedroll.
¡°Can¡¯t I have five minutes without the system wanting something from me?¡± he complained. He waved his hand to pull up the notification, expecting some mundane reminder or another low-level achievement. Instead, his eyes widened as he read.
[Divine Quest Received]
Guardian¡¯s Light
A prayer has reached the heavens, pleading for a protector. A young girl, Yuki, needs a guiding hand and a shield to guard her from the shadows threatening to consume her future. Will you answer the call?
- Protect Yuki from harm.
- Ensure her safe passage through the trials ahead.
- Fulfill the dying wish of her mother.
Reward:

Do You Accept?
Yes/No
Azriel blinked, sitting upright and rereading the quest description. His groggy irritation quickly gave way to confusion and then curiosity. A divine quest? And what¡¯s with the ominous ¡®???¡¯ reward? Azriel thought as he scratched his chin. Even if accepted, he accepted how would he know where this Yuki is? Azriel blinked again as another notification popped up, accompanied by a subtle chime.
[System Update: Map System Unlocked]
You can now access a detailed map of your current region and mark significant locations. Quest objectives will be highlighted.
¡°Well, that answers that,¡± Azriel muttered, rubbing his face to shake off the last traces of sleep. ¡°Convenient timing, huh?¡±
He stood, stretching to loosen the stiffness in his back, and with a thought, summoned the map. A semi-transparent projection of the area materialized before him, displaying the forest in meticulous detail. Azriel mentally accepted the quest, and a golden marker pulsed deeper within the woods, labeled simply Rena¡¯s Location.
¡°At least it¡¯s straightforward,¡± he said, staring at the marker.
Azriel methodically equipped his gear, checking each weapon and strap. Before leaving, his gaze drifted to the remains of last night¡¯s meal. He grabbed a piece of cooked wolf meat, stuffing it into his inventory.
¡°Never know when you¡¯ll need an energy boost,¡± he reasoned.
Stepping out of the cave, he squinted as sunlight filtered through the canopy above, casting a warm glow on his skin despite the lingering chill of the forest air. His boots crunched softly against the underbrush as he started walking. Glancing at the map again, he muttered, ¡°Let¡¯s hope this system knows what it¡¯s doing. And,¡± he added with a wry smirk, ¡°that this threat doesn¡¯t involve another pack of wolves.¡±
He stopped, inhaling deeply. It was time to try something new. With a sharp exhale, Azriel activated Gravity Manipulation. The world shifted as the familiar pull of the earth ebbed away. He floated a few inches above the ground, weightless and disoriented.
¡°This¡ feels strange,¡± he muttered, wobbling slightly. His instincts screamed for balance, but there was no ground beneath him to stabilize.
¡°Alright, Azriel, you¡¯ve got this,¡± he mumbled. ¡°Just¡ don¡¯t crash into anything.¡± Determined, he pushed himself higher, his movements jerky and unsteady. Soon, his feet left the forest floor entirely, and he hovered awkwardly in midair.
Adaption has activated
Gradually, he steadied, his body adapting to the new sensation. With more focus, his ascent became smoother. The treetops spread out before him, offering a breathtaking view of the forest stretching endlessly in all directions.

¡°Whoa,¡± he breathed, his unease giving way to exhilaration.
Testing his control, Azriel willed himself forward. His first attempts could have been more clumsy, sending him veering unpredictably. But with practice, his movements became precise, and the golden marker on his map drew his focus.
A grin broke across his face as realization hit. He was flying¡ªactually flying.
The wind rushed past him as he picked up speed, his red-tinged dreadlocks glowing faintly, the strands swaying like embers in the breeze. ¡°Okay, this is amazing,¡± he laughed softly, his voice barely audible over the air whipping around him.
As the marker grew closer, Azriel began to slow, descending toward the treetops. His initial unease had melted away, replaced by a sense of freedom and control.
¡°Not bad for a first try,¡± he said, glancing ahead at the glowing marker that pulsed in the distance. The journey had just begun.

The Dodomeki surrounded Yuki and her mother, their grotesque, multi-eyed forms shifting in the dim light of the forest. Their grins stretched unnaturally wide, their claws clicking ominously as they crept closer. Yuki¡¯s mother stood with her blade in hand, her grip firm despite the tremors running through her body. Her breathing was ragged, and there was blood at the corner of her mouth, but she refused to falter.
Three Dodomeki lunged, and Yuki''s mother cut them down with a swift, desperate slash. The motion cost her dearly, her knees buckling slightly before she caught herself. Yuki could feel her mother¡¯s energy dimming, her once-strong aura now flickering like a dying flame.
¡°Run, Yuki!¡± her mother shouted, her voice a mix of urgency and pain. ¡°I¡¯ll hold them off!¡±
Yuki froze, her fists clenched tightly at her sides. Her mother¡¯s words cut deep, but her gaze locked onto the blood staining her mother¡¯s lips, and her heart ached. She couldn¡¯t¡ªshe wouldn¡¯t leave. Sparks of electricity danced along her knuckles, crackling with defiance as she stepped forward to stand beside her mother.
¡°I¡¯m not running,¡± Yuki declared, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her. Her fists glowed with electric energy, her stance firm. ¡°If you¡¯re fighting, so am I.¡±
The Dodomeki chittered gleefully, their twisted grins growing wider as they prepared to strike. Three of them leaped forward, claws extended, their eyes alight with malice.
And then, the ground shook.
A loud crack echoed through the clearing as something slammed into the earth with the force of a meteor. A massive shockwave erupted, tearing through the ranks of the Dodomeki and throwing dirt and debris into the air. The three attacking creatures were obliterated instantly, their bodies disintegrating in the blinding impact.
Yuki shielded her face with her arm as the force of the explosion rippled through her. When the dust began to settle, she blinked and lowered her arm, her gaze drawn to the figure now standing between them and the remaining monsters.
The figure rose from his crouched position, the cracked earth beneath him still smoking from the force of his arrival. Yuki¡¯s wide eyes fixed on him, her heart pounding as she took in the surreal sight. He didn¡¯t look like anything she¡¯d ever seen; he looked like a star coming to life.
The first thing that caught her attention was his skin. It was a deep, rich cinnamon brown, glowing faintly in the scattered light of the forest. The warmth of its tone stood in stark contrast to the silver-white dreadlocks that crowned his head, radiant in the sunlight filtering through the trees. Beneath them, where shadows fell, a faint red glow emanated from the strands underneath, casting an otherworldly light that flickered like embers. The interplay of silver and red against his skin was mesmerizing, a dance of fire and starlight.
His jacket, a striking red, seemed both regal and ready for battle. The sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, revealing armor-lined forearms etched with nebula-like designs. The patterns shimmered as though holding the secrets of the cosmos within them. On the back of the jacket, a bold emblem drew her gaze: a four-winged dragon, its feathers intricately etched with grace and strength. Even though she¡¯d never seen the symbol before, it exuded a presence that was impossible to ignore.
His attire was both functional and stylish. His black pants, practical yet sleek, allowed for easy movement, while his bracers, sturdy and unyielding, seemed ready to deflect any blow. His fingerless gloves, tight and worn, hinted at a history of battles fought, granting him the skill to wield his strange, glowing weapon with precision. Even his shoes caught Yuki¡¯s attention: light and flexible but reinforced for durability. They reminded her vaguely of stories of runners and adventurers, though their build was clearly meant for terrain far more treacherous.
Her gaze trailed back to his glowing weapon, a fusion of blade and gun, a weapon her mother had talked about that had been created in industrial nations. The weapon hummed softly with stored energy. Every part of him seemed to tell a story of battle, strength, and resilience.
Then there were his golden eyes, blazing with intensity and resolve. They locked onto the Dodomeki with a ferocity that made Yuki shiver. His gaze alone was enough to send a ripple of unease through the monstrous creatures, their confidence faltering as they hesitated. This book''s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.
¡°Stay behind me,¡± he said, his voice calm and steady. It was deep and commanding, filled with an authority that brooked no argument.
For a moment, Yuki froze. She had never seen a fire before, but now she thought she understood it. This man was fire-blazing, raw, and untamed. He burned with a brilliance that promised both protection and destruction, warmth and danger.
The Dodomeki snarled and hissed, their earlier glee replaced with apprehension. This stranger, with an otherworldly presence, had shattered the rhythm of their hunt. Yuki clutched her sparking fist tighter, glancing at her mother, whose grip on her blade was weakening. Yet, standing in this man¡¯s shadow, she felt a flicker of hope reignite. Whatever he was, whatever he had come to do, he was here, and the tide of the battle had already shifted.

Azriel hovered above the forest canopy and surveyed the scene below. His dreadlocks swayed in the breeze, and he tied them back. He activated his skill, Eyes of Nighthawk, and his vision sharpened. The world seemed to darken slightly as the skill¡¯s enhanced perception took over, colors giving way to sharp contrasts and faintly glowing outlines of magical energy.
The forest floor below came into sharp focus, and Azriel¡¯s eyes locked onto the group of creatures surrounding the two figures. A faint blue light traced their forms, and detailed information began to flood his mind as a transparent window appeared in his vision:
[Dodomeki]
Classification: Yokai
Threat Level: Moderate to High
Description: Greed incarnate, the Dodomeki are fiendish yokai fascinated with wealth and thievery. These humanoid monsters are known for their lanky forms and pale, translucent skin that barely conceals the writhing mass of serpent-like eyes embedded within the flesh of their elongated arms. Each eye seems to move independently, scanning the surroundings for targets to kill and steal from. They are known for their predatory nature, often hunting in packs to overwhelm their targets.
-
- Multi-Sight: The numerous eyes grant them unparalleled perception, making it nearly impossible to evade their gaze.
- Weaknesses:
- Light Sensitivity: Dodomeki struggles in areas of intense light. Their attacks are less accurate, and their speed is reduced when exposed to bright illumination.
- Distracted Vision: Despite their enhanced perception, Dodomeki can become overwhelmed by sensory overload, especially if too many of their eyes are targeted or damaged at once.
- Combat Notes:
- Dodomeki are relentless hunters but will retreat if their leader is killed or if they face overwhelming resistance. They excel in ambushes and quick strikes, using their agility and multiple attackers to overwhelm prey.
- Effective strategies include creating bright light to impair their senses or isolating them from their pack.
Azriel¡¯s eyes narrowed as he watched the Dodomeki circle their prey. The two figures below were a woman with black hair streaked with a single white stripe wielding a blade crackling with lightning; he imagined Rena, the quest maker, placed on her in his vision. Beside Rena was a young girl with white hair marked by tiger-like stripes, her sparking fists. That girl must be Yuki Azriel, he thought to himself. The two of them were holding their ground, but they were clearly outnumbered. The woman¡¯s movements were slowing, her attacks growing less precise. Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth as she gritted her teeth, desperately fending off the creatures.
Yuki stood beside her mother, defiant and sparking with electricity, refusing to leave despite her mother¡¯s plea to run. Azriel could feel her raw energy, untrained but fierce like a storm barely contained. He could feel the mana in the air was being affected by her Presence; she was scarce but mostly angry. She reminds of him when he caught-
The Dodomeki closed in, their elongated limbs and serpentine eyes creating a nightmarish silhouette in the dim forest light. Three of them leaped forward to attack the pair, their claws gleaming with malice. Azriel¡¯s golden eyes glowed brighter as he deactivated Eyes of Nighthawk. Without any more hesitations, he descended at full speed, his hand gripping the hilt of his weapon.
¡°Time to turn the tables,¡± he muttered. ¡°[Planetary Impact].¡±
Just before the creatures struck, Azriel slammed into the ground with a thunderous impact, unleashing a shockwave that sent dirt and debris flying. The three Dodomeki closest to the pair were obliterated instantly, their twisted forms disintegrating under the force.

Azriel stood upright, his crimson jacket billowing slightly from the aftershock, as the remaining Dodomeki recoiled in surprise and fear. The predators had just become his prey.
¡°Stay behind me,¡± Azriel said, his voice calm and steady. With his Awareness, Azriel felt Yuki¡¯s anger calm down slightly, and Rena felt extremely relieved for some reason.
Azriel turned his attention to the large pack containing over 30 Dodomeki, and he stood his ground even with an advantage in numbers. The Dodomeki swarmed toward him, their grotesque multitude of eyes reflecting their predatory glee.
With a sharp inhale, Azriel activated [Stun Bullet], drawing the Myth Maker. The barrel hummed faintly, and as he fired, the bullets arced through the air, striking multiple Dodomeki in quick succession. They froze mid-charge, their twisted forms locking up as the stunning energy coursed through them.

He rolled to avoid a swipe from one of the creatures and snapped off another shot, this time activating [Shatter Bullet]. The bullet struck the ground at the center of a pack, detonating in a thunderous explosion. A crackling lightning bolt followed the eruption, arcing from one Dodomeki to another, searing them into ash.

The air filled with the scent of ozone and burning flesh. Azriel smirked, but the brief moment of triumph was cut short as claws raked across his back from above. He staggered forward, pain flaring as he turned to see one of the creatures grinning cruelly.
Azriel¡¯s vision blurred as the venom began coursing through his veins. His muscles felt sluggish, and his breath hitched as his body fought against the toxin. The Dodomeki hissed, sensing its advantage, but its triumph turned to terror as Azriel¡¯s gravity powers surged.
The Dodomeki was yanked upward and suspended in midair. It thrashed violently, attempting to free itself, but Azriel¡¯s will held firm. He staggered to his feet, clutching the hilt of Myth Maker tightly.
¡°You think¡ that¡¯s enough to stop me?¡± Azriel growled, his voice laced with defiance.
With a swift strike, he cleaved the Dodomeki¡¯s head from its body, its lifeless form crashing to the ground. Poison still pulsed through his body, and his breathing grew heavier. He dropped to one knee, clutching his side as the venom sapped his strength.

Adaptation, he thought desperately, activating his Born Trait. He focused inward, his willpower sharpening into resolve. His body began to adjust to the toxin, mitigating its effects. But it wasn¡¯t enough.
New Skill Acquired [Poison Resistance]
¡°No... stronger,¡± he muttered, his voice shaking. He visualized immunity, imagining the venom burning away entirely as his body refined itself. The trait surged, and he felt the change solidify a newfound immunity to the Dodomeki¡¯s no to any poison. Azriel stood, a dangerous smile spreading across his face.
[Poison Resistance] has become [Poison Immunity]

[Poison Immunity] has been moved from Skills to Physical Traits
Azriel dismissed the window and saw the remaining Dodomeki hesitate, fear creeping into their many eyes as they saw him rise unbroken. Azriel raised his hand, and a pulse of gravity pinned them all to the forest floor.
¡°You don¡¯t get to run,¡± he said coldly, his voice like steel.
With methodical precision, he dispatched them one by one, their attempts to resist futile under his crushing power. The forest fell silent, save for the faint crackle of dissipating energy.
Azriel exhaled deeply, surveying the carnage. His body still thrummed with the lingering adrenaline, and a grim satisfaction settled over him. He glanced back, knowing Yuki and her mother were safe, until he saw Rena fall onto the ground. Azriel began rushing over to aid her but then came to a halt when he felt another Dodomeki presence hiding in the trees. Turning to run away, he turned his weapon and shot at it. The Dodomeki, in a display of high acrobatic skill, dodged all of the bullets and fired, a horrified expression still on its face.
¡°Damn it!¡± he shouted as it escaped.
¡°Warrior, please help my mother!¡± Yuki yelled to Azriel. Azriel clicked his tongue, angered by catching the fleeing Yokai, but the girl¡¯s mother was important and rushed over. Expanding his senses, he saw Rena''s life force was almost depleted; the poison he was affected before he had to guess. He quickly used his looting ability, hoping to obtain an antidote. After all of the corpses vanished, a new window appeared, and he was unsatisfied.

Azriel turned to face Rena and Yuki. Rena sat against a tree, her breathing shallow and labored. Her bloodied hand pressed weakly against her side, and her face was pale, her strength clearly ebbing.
¡°No antidote, I assume?¡± Rena asked, her voice weak but tinged with grim acceptance.
Azriel hesitated for a moment before shaking his head. ¡°No¡ not here. And I don¡¯t know where the closest town is.¡±
Rena gave a faint smile, her eyes shifting to Yuki. The girl knelt beside her mother, gripping her arm tightly, her face streaked with tears. Despite her evident fear, electricity still crackled faintly along her fingertips.
¡°You¡¡± Rena began, her gaze returning to Azriel. ¡°Are you the one who answered my prayer? The one to take my request?¡±
Azriel straightened, meeting her gaze. ¡°I am,¡± he said. His silver-white dreadlocks gleamed in the fading sunlight, the faint red glow underneath giving him an almost ethereal presence. ¡°My name is Azriel,¡± he continued. ¡°I¡¯m a Radiantborn, I guess.¡±
Rena¡¯s smile grew faint but genuine. ¡°Radiantborn¡ I prayed for someone strong. Someone who could protect her, and I got pretty much a Demigod.¡± She coughed, a wet and rattling sound, and Yuki¡¯s grip on her tightened.
¡°Mother, no!¡± Yuki cried, her voice breaking.
Rena reached out, cupping her daughter¡¯s face with trembling fingers. ¡°Come close, my little star,¡± she said softly.
Yuki leaned in, her tears falling freely as she pressed her forehead to her mother¡¯s.
Rena¡¯s other hand reached for her belt, pulling free a small sphere that pulsed faintly with stormy energy. She placed it in Yuki¡¯s hands along with her sword, its hilt worn but still sturdy. ¡°These are yours now,¡± Rena whispered. ¡°A part of me¡ to guide you.¡±
¡°Mother, no!¡± Yuki sobbed. ¡°You can¡¯t! Just hold on a little longer!¡±
Rena shook her head weakly, her smile never fading. ¡°Azriel will watch over you,¡± she said, her voice barely audible. ¡°He is strong¡ and kind. You¡¯ll be safe.¡± Her eyes drifted back to Azriel. ¡°Thank you¡ thank you for coming¡¡±
With one final breath, Rena¡¯s hand fell to her side, her smile frozen in place.
¡°Mother?¡± Yuki whispered. ¡°Mother!¡± Her cries turned into wails, and she buried her face in Rena¡¯s chest.
Azriel stood silently, his expression stoic, but his fists clenched tightly at his sides. He watched the scene unfold, a heavy weight settling in his chest. The warmth of the fight had faded, replaced by a cold, simmering anger.
His mind turned to the Dodomeki still out there, likely stalking them. I¡¯ll make sure they regret every step they take in this forest, he thought darkly, his silver dreadlocks catching the faint red glow as he turned his gaze to the horizon. For now, though, he remained where he was, watching over Yuki and silently vowing to uphold the promise Rena had entrusted to him.
Chapter 11: Master Tier Path
Akiko stumbled through the thick underbrush, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Her body ached from the wounds she had sustained, and blood trickled down her arm from a deep gash. The eerie glow of the enchanted lanterns hanging around the Dodomeki encampment barely penetrated the darkness of the forest, casting long, flickering shadows.
Two Dodomeki rushed to her side, their eyes embedded in their arms, blinking with concern. One reached out to steady her, but Akiko shook them off and staggered forward. ¡°I¡ I need to see Lady Kuroha,¡± she panted, ignoring their worried murmurs.
She pushed her way through the gathered crowd until she reached the heart of the camp, where Lady Kuroha stood tall and composed, wearing a kimono with an ocean motif. Her black hair flowed like silk down her back, and while her arms bore the many eyes of her kind, her face held a single, normal set of eyes that watched Akiko with quiet intensity.
Akiko fell to her knees, panting. ¡°Lady Kuroha¡ I bring dire news.¡±
Lady Kuroha inclined her head, her expression unreadable. ¡°Speak.¡±
Akiko swallowed hard. ¡°A warrior ambushed us. He was unlike anything I¡¯ve seen before. He wielded powerful magic wind magic, but¡ stronger. It bent everything around him and crushed our defenses. I barely escaped.¡±
Lady Kuroha¡¯s eyes narrowed slightly. ¡°Wind magic, you say? How many did we lose?¡±
¡°All of them,¡± Akiko whispered, her voice breaking. ¡°He killed them all.¡±
There was a long silence as the weight of her words settled over the camp. The gathered Dodomeki exchanged uneasy glances, their arms bristling with tension.
Then, from the shadows, a commanding voice rang out. Leida, the second-in-command, stepped forward. Tall and imposing, her arms rippled with muscle, and the eyes along them glowed faintly in the dim light. Her gaze was fierce, and electricity crackled around her hands, a testament to her formidable power.
¡°We can¡¯t let this go unanswered,¡± Leida growled. ¡°Our sisters¡¯ blood cries out for vengeance.¡±
Lady Kuroha¡¯s voice was calm but firm. ¡°Revenge will only lead to more loss. We need to pull back, regroup.¡±
Leida¡¯s many eyes flicked toward the Chieftess, a snarl curling her lips. ¡°Regroup? After what he did? No. We strike now while the trail is fresh.¡±
¡°We cannot afford to act recklessly,¡± Lady Kuroha warned.
Leida stepped forward, defiant. ¡°With respect, Chieftess, caution will only embolden him. If we wait, he¡¯ll come for us. I won¡¯t let that happen.¡±
The gathered Dodomeki shifted uneasily, their loyalty torn. Leida¡¯s voice rose in a rallying cry. ¡°Who¡¯s with me? We¡¯ll find this warrior and make him pay!¡±
A chorus of roars erupted from the crowd as over sixty Dodomeki stepped forward, their eyes gleaming with fury. Akiko hesitated, her heart pounding. She knew disobeying Lady Kuroha was dangerous, but the need for vengeance burned too brightly to ignore.
¡°Leida, this will lead to ruin,¡± Lady Kuroha said, her gaze hardened.
Leida smirked. ¡°Stay behind if you want. We¡¯ll finish what he started.¡±
Without waiting for permission, Leida turned and strode into the forest, her electric aura crackling in the darkness. The Dodomeki followed, their eyes glinting with determination. Akiko trailed behind, her mind racing.
As they moved deeper into the woods, Leida¡¯s voice echoed through the trees. ¡°Find him. And when you do, show no mercy.¡±
Leida¡¯s many eyes glimmered ominously as she strode forward, the energy around her hands crackling with increasing intensity. She turned her head just enough to glance at Akiko, her expression a mix of disdain and calculation.
¡°When we find him,¡± Leida growled, ¡°you grab the kaiju girl. She¡¯ll be useful.¡±
Akiko blinked, her breath hitching. Kaiju girl? The nickname felt off, but she bit her tongue. Leida wasn¡¯t one to tolerate questioning. ¡°Understood,¡± she muttered, though unease coiled in her gut.
Leida nodded, satisfied. ¡°Don¡¯t mess this up, Akiko,¡± she added with a faint sneer. ¡°We¡¯ve already lost enough.¡±
As the group moved deeper into the forest, Akiko¡¯s unease grew stronger. The shadows felt heavier, and every whisper of wind seemed to carry an ominous warning. She glanced around, her gaze darting from tree to tree, but nothing stood out yet.
Something¡¯s wrong, Akiko thought, her heart pounding. Every instinct screamed that this wasn¡¯t going to end well. Leida¡¯s plan was too aggressive, too risky. The warrior they faced wasn¡¯t normal. The sheer power he wielded back in the clearing, the way he had torn through their sisters.
Akiko clenched her fists, forcing herself to stay calm. Just grab the girl and get out. Simple. But deep down, she knew it wouldn¡¯t be.
***
Azriel leaned against the cool stone wall of the cave, the soft crackle of a campfire filling the silence. The orange glow flickered across Yuki¡¯s face as she knelt on the ground, performing the Thundering Ash Rite. Sparks of electricity danced around her fingertips, illuminating her solemn expression. As the ritual ended, a faint rumble echoed through the cave. Rena¡¯s body gently dissolved into shimmering ash, swirling into a small ceremonial bag Yuki now held tightly in her lap.
Yuki¡¯s shoulders trembled, clutching the bag, sword, and essence left behind by her mother. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears, a mixture of sorrow and fear written across her young face. Azriel, watching from a distance, felt a pang of empathy.
He sighed, running a hand through his silver-white dreadlocks, the faint red glow from underneath casting soft shadows. What can I even say? He thought. Words felt hollow in the face of such loss.
Determined to do something, anything, to ease her pain, Azriel turned to his inventory. He pulled out some of the wolf meat from earlier, setting up a makeshift cooking station over the fire. As the meat sizzled, the aroma filled the cave, a blend of savory spices and mana-infused warmth. Azriel infused a bit of his energy into the meal, hoping it would provide comfort beyond just sustenance.
¡°Yuki,¡± he called softly, handing her a plate once the steak was ready.
Yuki hesitated at first, eyes still fixed on the bag of ashes. But after a moment, she gently set it down beside her and took the plate. The first bite made her eyes widen slightly. A soft, surprised smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
¡°It¡¯s good,¡± she whispered, her voice cracking. She looked at Azriel, tears spilling over as she held the plate close. ¡°She¡¯s still with me¡ we¡¯re still¡ sharing this.¡±
Azriel nodded, sitting down beside her. ¡°She¡¯ll always be with you,¡± he said quietly. ¡°In everything you do.¡±
Yuki sobbed quietly, eating between breaths, and Azriel sat there, offering silent support. The warmth of the fire, the scent of the food, and the quiet presence of someone who understood gave her a sense of peace, however fleeting.
Eventually, exhaustion won out. Yuki curled up on Azriel¡¯s bedroll, still clutching her mother¡¯s belongings as she drifted into sleep. Azriel adjusted the blanket over her, making sure she was comfortable before stepping away to check his system notifications.

Azriel stared at the glowing notifications, his eyes tracing the details of the rewards from his quest¡ªthe Blessing of Sel?ra, Gauntlets of Bastila, and Celestial Essence. The description of the blessing was intriguing, and the idea of an aura that amplified his presence under the moonlight was appealing. His attention quickly turned to the items in his inventory. The Celestial Essence caught his eye first as a sphere of red-gold light, its glow faintly pulsing, the inner halo shifting with subtle elegance. It felt powerful, like something ancient yet unassuming in its quiet radiance. Azriel reached out, his fingers brushing the surface of the sphere.
- [Legenday]
- Celestial Essence is the purest form of divine energy, collected from the very fabric of the heavens. Infused with the power of celestial beings, it holds the essence of pure will, balance, and the cosmic forces that govern the multiverse. Those who possess Celestial Essence find themselves imbued with unearthly strength and access to abilities that transcend mortal limitations.
It was warm, but not in a way that burned. The moment his skin made contact, a wave of calm power washed over him, his senses sharpening, a connection forming to something greater than himself. He felt... aligned, as if a piece of his soul had found its place within this divine artifact. A celestial gift, he thought. Sel?ra, huh?
He set the Essence down carefully, then turned his attention to the Gauntlets of Bastila. They were striking, silver with intricate glowing runes that pulsed softly, synced with the phases of the moon. He held them up to the firelight, watching the faint lunar glow shimmer across the surface. The runes weren¡¯t just decorative; they hummed with a quiet power, almost like they were waiting for something. Azriel could feel the latent energy as he slipped them on, the fit perfect, as if they had been crafted specifically for him. The surface was smooth but unyielding, a reminder of the strength they imbued.
His hands felt more... solid, more connected to something beyond the physical realm, like the gauntlets were grounding him in a way he hadn¡¯t experienced before. A surge of warmth spread through his arms, then faded, leaving a sense of readiness and strength behind.
He flexed his fingers, testing the gauntlets. There was no resistance, just an immediate comfort like they were an extension of himself.
Azriel glanced back at Yuki, still curled up in her sleep. She¡¯ll need protection, he thought, clenching his fists in the gauntlets.
He looked at his Path Level Up. Path Level Up... Monster Cook. He smiled softly. Well, that''s unexpected, he thought, recalling the meal he''d made earlier. The idea of honing his skills in cooking was strange but practical. I''ll make sure her next meal is even better.
But the Blessing of Sel?ra intrigued him the most. His awareness was heightened, his willpower bolstered, and a new strength flowed through him, especially under the moon''s glow. He could feel it deep in his bones. I can protect her. With one final glance at the quest rewards and his new abilities, Azriel took a deep breath, the weight of responsibility settling on his shoulders.
Azriel stood in the dim cave, the fire¡¯s warm glow casting flickering shadows across the stone walls. He glanced at the quest rewards of the Celestial Essence and the Gauntlets of Bastila and felt the weight of responsibility settle heavily on his shoulders. The air felt charged, thick with tension. Despite the comfort the rewards offered, unease gnawed at him. He was about to process it all when a presence suddenly appeared beside him, making him freeze.
¡°You¡¯ve been busy,¡± a soft, melodic voice broke the silence.
Azriel whipped around, hand instinctively reaching for his weapon. He hadn¡¯t heard her approach, hadn¡¯t sensed her at all. His heightened awareness had failed him.
¡°How?¡± he asked, his voice low, eyes narrowing.
¡°You¡¯re focused on too many things at once,¡± she said, stepping forward. Her smile was playful, but her eyes betrayed a sense of urgency. ¡°Sixty-two Dodomeki are coming. They want vengeance for their sister you killed.¡±
The number hit him like a hammer. Thirty had been a challenge, even with the element of surprise. But sixty-two? His thoughts spun wildly. ¡°How are they tracking us?¡± he demanded.
She glanced toward Yuki¡¯s belongings. ¡°Her mother¡¯s items,¡± she said, her voice calm but edged with grim understanding. ¡°They can literally smell wealth, and those items cost a fortune. To them, it¡¯s like a beacon.¡±
Azriel clenched his fists. His mind raced through options: he could fly using his gravity powers, but the mana cost would be immense. Hiding the items was another problem altogether. ¡°What¡¯s the plan?¡± he asked, trying to keep his voice steady.
¡°Calm yourself,¡± she said, stepping closer. Her hand cupped his face gently, a strange but comforting gesture. ¡°You still have time. The yokai are hours away.¡±
¡°How do I prepare?¡± he pressed, forcing himself to focus.
She pointed at the Celestial Essence, still glowing faintly. ¡°Absorb it. Create a new [Path], put Yuki¡¯s belongings in your inventory, and when they arrive, kill them all.¡±
Azriel nodded slowly but kept his gaze locked on hers. Something about her presence felt¡ off. ¡°Who are you?¡±
Her smile faltered, and for a moment, she hesitated. ¡°I¡¯m your guardian,¡± she said softly.
He snorted. ¡°Guardian? Really? That¡¯s straight out of a story. The mysterious protector is watching over the hero.¡±
¡°This isn¡¯t a story, Azriel,¡± she said, her eyes hardening.
¡°Then what¡¯s your name?¡± Azriel asked.
A pause. The woman¡¯s posture stiffened, and her voice softened. ¡°I¡ don¡¯t have one.¡±
Azriel¡¯s brow furrowed. ¡°Everyone has a name. You can¡¯t tell me you don¡¯t have one.¡±
She froze, visibly unsettled. ¡°It doesn¡¯t matter,¡± she whispered.
¡°Then I¡¯ll give you one.¡± Azriel¡¯s voice was firm yet thoughtful. I¡¯ll call you Eve, the first woman since you¡¯re, the first woman I met in his world.¡±
For a fleeting moment, a glimmer of warmth softened Eve''s features, and her lips curled into a delicate smile that hinted at vulnerability. But then, like a flickering candle extinguished by a gust of wind, her expression hardened, and tension rippled through her frame. Mysterious, luminescent green markings erupted across her arms and neck, their glow throbbing rhythmically as if powered by an unseen force, casting an eerie light over her skin.¡°Head northwest. There¡¯s a shelter there. After you deal with the Dodomeki, go,¡± Eve said, her voice sharp. This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.
Azriel opened his mouth to question her, but before he could speak, she vanished, leaving only a faint trace of her presence behind.
He stood there in silence, the weight of her words lingering. Shaking his head, he knelt by Yuki and carefully placed her mother¡¯s items into his inventory. The danger was approaching quickly, and there was no time to waste.
Azriel straightened, gripping the Celestial Essence tightly. ¡°It¡¯s time to prepare,¡± he muttered. Without hesitation, he absorbed the glowing orb, feeling its power surge through him. The fight was approaching, and he would be ready.
***
Eve stood alone in a clearing deep within the forest. The moonlight filtered through the trees, casting silver beams onto the forest floor. The air was crisp and quiet, save for the rustling of leaves stirred by a gentle breeze. She looked down at her arms, where the glowing marks had finally dimmed, their light fading.
Her expression softened, though the tension in her body didn¡¯t entirely leave. The relief was fleeting. The marks¡¯ glow had been a warning, a reminder of the connection now binding her to Azriel. A bond she had willingly forged but one that carried its weight.
Eve took a deep breath, closing her eyes and letting the silence wrap around her like a cloak. "You¡¯re stuck with me forever," she whispered to herself, the words hanging in the air, both a promise and a quiet lament. There was no going back now. She had stepped into a role she hadn¡¯t anticipated, tied to a man who carried more than just power. He carried a destiny that could shape more than he realized.
Her mind drifted to the moment when she had cupped his face, feeling his anxiety, his overwhelming sense of responsibility. She had seen that weight before¡ªin only one other person, her former master. Yet, Azriel was different from her former master. There was a fire in him, a stubborn defiance against the forces that tried to control him. That defiance would either save him or burn everything around him.
She opened her eyes, glancing toward the direction of the cave where she had left him. He was preparing, absorbing the Celestial Essence, and strengthening himself for what lay ahead. A small smile tugged at the corner of her lips, though it didn¡¯t quite reach her eyes.
"Protecting him is the right thing," she thought, the conviction solidifying within her. "Even if he doesn¡¯t understand why yet."
But that protection came at a cost. The marks on her body were a reminder of the price she would pay. A reminder of the ancient power watching, waiting for the moment she would falter. She wouldn¡¯t let that happen. Not now. Not ever.
Eve turned her gaze to the sky, where the stars blinked down, cold and distant. ¡°I¡¯ll see this through,¡± she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. ¡°For both of us.¡±
With a final, lingering glance at the horizon where the last rays of twilight melted into the darkening sky, she slipped quietly into the shadows, like a whisper fading into the night. The clearing, once vibrant with the sounds of dusk, fell into an enveloping silence, reclaiming its tranquil solitude. Only the delicate, intoxicating fragrance of night-blooming flowers drifted on the cool evening breeze, a fleeting reminder of her presence, as ephemeral and elusive as a dream on the cusp of waking.
***
Azriel floated in the familiar void, a starry expanse stretching endlessly in every direction. The same calm, weightless sensation washed over him as it had when he first forged the Skybreaker Blade. However, something felt different this time. As he drifted toward the central island, his gaze was drawn to the sword still orbiting in a slow, serene arc, glowing faintly with a soft blue light.
But that wasn¡¯t what caught his attention. A new addition appeared: a bridge extending from the edge of the island, formed from ethereal stone and shimmering with faint, golden veins. Azriel narrowed his eyes, curiosity burning within him. He took a cautious step forward, then another, until he found himself walking across the bridge, his footsteps echoing softly in the otherwise silent void.
The bridge led to what looked like a town square in progress. Several structures were partially formed, their outlines shimmering as though they were still being conceptualized. To Azriel¡¯s right, a fully realized building stood out: a fanatical-style inn with a carved wooden sign bearing a wolf¡¯s head. Azriel tilted his head, piecing it together.
¡°Monster Cook,¡± he muttered, recognizing the connection to his Path. A smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. ¡°Cool.¡±
His attention shifted to the square¡¯s center, where an anvil sat atop a raised platform, bathed in a red-gold light that pulsed rhythmically, like a heartbeat. Azriel inhaled deeply, steadying himself, and approached. He placed a hand on the hammer resting beside the anvil, its handle warm to the touch. As he lifted it, a glowing menu appeared in his vision, listing five divine domains:
- Vengeance
- Knowledge
- Order
- Twilight
- Life
Azriel scrolled through them, each one resonating with its weight. His mind lingered on recent events, the death of Yuki¡¯s mother, the pain, and the injustice of it all. A deep, burning conviction settled in his chest. He knew what he had to choose. His eyes locked on vengeance.
The moment he confirmed his choice, the anvil flared to life, glowing brighter and hotter. Azriel gripped the hammer tightly and began to strike, each blow sending sparks flying into the void. The metal on the anvil shifted and molded, taking shape under his relentless strikes.
Suddenly, red-black ethereal chains erupted from the void, coiling around him like serpents, their touch cold and biting. They pulled taut, attempting to bind him. A notification window flashed in his vision:
Apollyon, Goddess of Vengeance, War, and Wrath, is attempting to claim you as her angel.
Azriel¡¯s jaw clenched. He felt the oppressive weight of the chains as they tightened, the power of the goddess pressing down on him, trying to subjugate his will. But he wasn¡¯t one to kneel. Not now. Not ever.
With a growl, he tapped into his [Unbound] Outworlder Trait, a surge of raw defiance coursing through his veins. The struggle became a dance of pain and fury as the chains transformed, their links sprouting jagged blades that cut into his flesh. Blood dripped onto the anvil, mixing with the molten light.
Azriel roared, the anger boiling inside him, anger at the injustice and the entity trying to force him into servitude. Channeling that rage, he grabbed one of the chains with both hands, ignoring the searing pain, and slammed it onto the anvil. Sparks exploded as he raised the hammer and brought it down with all his might.
¡°MY PATH, YOU DIVINE BASTARD!¡±
The anvil blazed, engulfing both the chain and the Celestial Essence in a storm of red-gold light. The void trembled as if acknowledging his defiance, his refusal to be controlled. With each strike, Azriel infused the forging with his willpower and his determination to carve his fate.

Blow after blow, the chains began to shatter, their fragments dissolving into light. The essence fused into the weapon forming on the anvil, pulsating with raw power. Azriel¡¯s final strike sent a shockwave through the void, leaving him breathless but victorious.
The hammer clattered to the ground as the flickering light faded, illuminating the breathtaking result of his labor. Azriel stood proudly amidst the remnants of his toil, his form weary yet resilient, a triumphant smile playing at the corners of his lips. He had shaped not metal but his very destiny, every curve and contour a testament to his unwavering determination. Azriel felt his body shift.

In the heart of the celestial plane, a sacred meeting ground lay cloaked in twilight. Swirling mists and faint stars hovered above the endless expanse of polished obsidian. The air thrummed with divine energy as two figures stood across from each other, locked in a charged silence.
Sel?ra, serene yet slightly uneasy, folded her arms beneath her flowing robes. Her pale, moonlit skin glowed softly in the dim light. The fusion of combat and shrine maiden attire hugged her form elegantly, the silken fabrics swaying with each subtle movement. Her white rabbit ears twitched ever so slightly, betraying her calm exterior, while her mask, carved from smooth ivory and adorned with faint runes, concealed her eyes. Beneath it, a faint blush threatened to creep up her cheeks as she held back laughing.
Across from her, Apollyon radiated fury tempered by a grudging respect. Her gold armor gleamed with a crimson sheen. Underneath her armor were sleeveless black combat robes, the red sash at her waist fluttering like a battle standard. The wolf-like mask covering the top half of her face did little to hide the intensity in her voice as she spoke.
¡°He stole my essence,¡± Apollyon growled, her silver dreadlocks shimmering with each agitated movement. ¡°Do you understand the audacity it takes to forge one¡¯s [Path] with my power? I should be furious.¡± Her lips curled into a smirk beneath the mask. ¡°But I¡¯m also impressed.¡±
Sel?ra inclined her head, her voice calm and melodic. ¡°Azriel is¡ unique. He didn¡¯t need my intervention.¡± She paused, sensing the question before it came. ¡°No, Apollyon. I had no hand in guiding him. He chose this on his own.¡±
Apollyon took a slow step forward, her gold-plated boots ringing out against the stone. ¡°You¡¯re quite defensive of him. Are you interested in him, Sel?ra?¡± The question dripped with mischief and curiosity. ¡°Is that why you¡¯ve graced him with your blessing? A gift for someone you fancy?¡±
Sel?ra¡¯s ears twitched again, this time more visibly. The blush she had been suppressing bloomed, staining her pale cheeks a soft pink. ¡°I-I only blessed him because he earned it,¡± she stammered, her voice quieter but firmer. ¡°There¡¯s nothing romantic about it.¡±
Apollyon chuckled, the sound low and rich. ¡°You¡¯re blushing, Sel?ra. Don¡¯t lie to me.¡± Her tone softened slightly, but the teasing edge remained. With a dramatic sigh, she straightened and folded her arms. ¡°Still, he¡¯s proven himself worthy.¡±
Sel?ra tensed as Apollyon raised a hand, crimson and gold energy swirling around her fingers. ¡°I¡¯ll grant him my blessing, too.¡± The words felt like a challenge, and Sel?ra¡¯s lips parted in surprise.
¡°You would¡ª?¡± Sel?ra started, but Apollyon cut her off.
¡°Yes. The more eyes on him, the better. He¡¯s made waves already, and the gods will take notice. They¡¯ll come for him, Sel?ra. It¡¯s inevitable.¡± Her tone was blunt but not unkind. ¡°Let¡¯s see how he handles the weight of their attention.¡±
Sel?ra¡¯s fists clenched at her sides. ¡°You know what that means. He¡¯ll be hunted and tested. You¡¯re inviting danger.¡±
Apollyon shrugged. ¡°He invited it the moment he claimed his Path. I won¡¯t deny him the reward.¡± She took a step back, the light around her dimming. ¡°I¡¯ll send an item to the temple district in the nearest city. Consider it¡ an apology for any trouble I might cause.¡± Her voice dripped with amusement. ¡°He¡¯s not your typical mortal.¡±
Sel?ra exhaled, frustration flickering beneath her mask. ¡°You¡¯re making this harder for him.¡±
¡°Or helping him rise to the challenge,¡± Apollyon countered, her grin audible in her voice. ¡°Perhaps he¡¯ll surprise even you after he just gained a Master Tier Path.¡±
With that, Apollyon turned, her form dissolving into shimmering gold and red particles, leaving Sel?ra alone in the twilight. The pale woman let out a long breath, her rabbit ears lowering slightly. ¡°Azriel,¡± she whispered, a mixture of worry and admiration lacing her voice. ¡°You never make things simple, do you?¡±
***
When Azriel woke up, his senses told him Yuki was still asleep, somewhat upbrothed by what he had done. Does that bed prevent people from waking up until morning? He thought. Azriel looked himself over using the perception that gave him an odd third-person perspective of himself; his abstract tattoos began to glow red along his arms, the patterns swirling and shifting to life once more. The hexagons and interwind swirling nebulas formed and, this time, remained cascading from his arms across his chest and pooling onto his back. A new set of aura drew his attention as 62 figures came in, just like Eve said. Azriel stood up, manifesting Myth Maker, but it looked way different. The once jet-black blade with violet energy has become a silver-white masterpiece, radiating a soft but potent glow. Light green circuits pulse along its surface, resembling veins of raw energy coursing through a living weapon. The blade hums with a serene yet dangerous resonance, symbolizing the balance between creation and devastation. The weapon¡¯s gun mechanism is seamlessly integrated into the blade''s design. When the trigger was pulled, the blade''s edges split apart, revealing an inner chamber that channels mana.
¡°What happened to you?¡± Azriel asks the gunblade as if it would answer him. Azriel redoubled his focus on the task after feeling the yokai get closer. He opened his status, and he was satisfied but also confused by all the changes. Any questions he had will have to wait. Azriel closed his status, cut the flame cooking set, placed it into his inventory, and stepped out ready.

Chapter 12: Angel of Vengence
Akiko crouched low, her many eyes scanning the clearing. The scent of treasure hung in the air, thick and irresistible. The gold was so close that her fingers twitched involuntarily, eager to grasp it. After all, the chase, the hoard, and the gold were the essence of their existence.
¡°She¡¯s near,¡± Akiko whispered, voice barely audible, her gaze shifting toward her sister.
Leida, standing tall and commanding, gave a sharp nod. Her cold and calculating eyes flicked toward the bodies of their fallen kin. ¡°Good,¡± she said, her tone harsh. Prepare the others.¡±
Akiko hesitated, sensing something dark in the air. ¡°Leida, maybe we should¡ª¡±
¡°Akiko.¡± Leida¡¯s voice cut through the tension, unyielding. ¡°Obey.¡±
Akiko bit her lip, feeling the tension thrumming through her. She reluctantly nodded, aware that orders were orders, no matter how daunting the task ahead. The Dodomeki glided forward, their movements as fluid and silent as shadows slipping through the night. Their insatiable hunger for gold consumed them, closing their eyes to the dangers that lay in wait along their path. Each step was measured and deliberate, driven by greed that overshadowed any sense of caution.
Suddenly, in the flickering shadows cast by their lanterns, they caught sight of a small pile of gold coins shimmering enticingly on the damp, stone floor. The coins, their surfaces polished and bright, reflected the faint glow like tiny beacons of wealth. Ten of the group members, overcome by a surge of greed, dashed forward with reckless abandon, their hearts racing and eyes wide with desire. Reason abandoned them as they lunged for the glittering treasure, each one desperate to grasp the riches that lay before them.
The clearing ignited into a frenzy of activity, a whirlwind of movement and noise that shattered the stillness. A single shot rang out, silent yet deafening in its impact. The bullet that followed left a trail of black and crimson energy in its wake, an omen of destruction. It struck the ground, unleashing a localized explosion that consumed the Dodomeki instantly. The force was absolute, disintegrating everything it touched and bypassing any defense they might have had.
The remaining Dodomeki froze in terror. Leida¡¯s face twisted in fury. ¡°Stay away from the gold!¡± she barked, her voice trembling with rage.
Akiko''s heart raced in her chest, each beat echoing the urgency of her situation. She glanced anxiously around the dimly lit room, the air thick with tension. Deep down, she understood the futility of her efforts. Dodomeki, creatures known for their insatiable hunger for gold, were as relentless as the tides. They were drawn to the shimmering metal as if it were a magnet, compelled by an instinct embedded in their very essence. No matter how much she wished to resist their call, their nature would always prevail, luring them in with an irresistible allure that she feared would soon consume her as well.
Another pulse of annihilative energy ripped through the air, scattering debris and cutting down more of their kind. A dark figure moved through the chaos, shadows clinging to him like a second skin. He struck with brutal efficiency. His weapon, no, his Wrathful Blade, shifted in color, radiating hues of gold, crimson, and black. Every strike left devastation in its wake, the blade cutting through both bodies and what felt to Akiko the souls as well.
The earth trembled again as a shockwave of force erupted, sending the Dodomeki flying. Akiko watched in horror as her sisters fell, one after another, their bodies lifeless before they hit the ground.
When the dust settled, only she and Leida remained. Through the haze, the figure emerged. Akiko¡¯s breath hitched. He was no mere mortal. A red halo floated above his head, pulsing like a heartbeat. Six ethereal wings, shaped like crimson ribbons, unfurled behind him, casting an eerie glow.
Akiko felt her legs weaken as the crimson-winged figure stepped forward, his gaze falling upon her. Instinct took over. Without a second thought, she turned and bolted, feet pounding against the earth as she sought refuge in the ruins around her. She ducked behind a crumbled pillar, her heart hammering in her chest. She pressed her back against the cold stone, holding her breath, desperate to disappear.
¡°Coward!¡± Leida¡¯s voice rang out, filled with fury. ¡°Face him!¡±
Akiko clenched her teeth, guilt twisting in her gut. But no amount of loyalty could overcome the overwhelming terror that gripped her now.
Leida charged, her hands crackling with electricity. She unleashed a torrent of lightning bolts, each strike lighting up the battlefield in brilliant flashes. The energy slammed into him, but he didn¡¯t flinch. He walked through it all, unbothered and unstoppable.
Leida let out a piercing scream of frustration, her emotions boiling over as she unleashed a flurry of attacks with increasing desperation. Each strike sent arcs of energy crackling through the air, bright sparks illuminating the space around them, mingling with the heavy, acrid scent of ozone that hung thick in the atmosphere. Despite the intensity of her efforts, the figure before her stood completely unfazed, his expression a mask of calm that only heightened her unease. The contrast of her frantic energy against his serene demeanor sent a chill down her spine, making her feel as though she was battling not just him but the very essence of her turmoil. Her energy faltered, and her breathing ragged. The figure raised his blade. The strike was swift and merciless, and Leida collapsed, lifeless.
Akiko¡¯s heart pounded violently in her chest, each beat echoing in her ears like a distant drum. She huddled deeper into the enveloping shadows, her numerous eyes shimmering with a mix of fear and anticipation as they darted around, searching for any sign of danger. The air felt heavy with tension, and a chilling awareness crept over her. He was there, just a breath away, lurking in the dim light, forming an unsettling presence beside her.
¡°Akiko.¡±
Her name, spoken with quiet authority, sent a chill down her spine. She fell to her knees, trembling. ¡°Please¡ Lord Celestial,¡± she whispered, her voice cracking. ¡°Forgive me. I-I didn¡¯t mean to¡¡±
His gaze bore into her, unyielding. ¡°You took Yuki¡¯s mother¡¯s life,¡± he said, each word a blade of its own. ¡°Why should I forgive you?¡±
Akiko¡¯s hands clasped together in desperation. ¡°I¡¯ll do anything,¡± she choked out, tears streaming down from the eyes of her arms. ¡°Anything you ask. Just¡ spare me.¡±
An oppressive silence enveloped the room, stretching out like an unfathomable fog. His towering presence loomed over Akiko, an intangible weight that seemed to close in around her chest, making it difficult to breathe. Each passing moment felt like an eternity as the air thickened, pinning her in place under the intensity of his gaze. She could feel the heaviness of the atmosphere, as if the very walls were closing in, amplifying her sense of vulnerability and unease.
¡°Anything?¡± His voice was calm, but it carried a weight that made her shiver.
Akiko nodded frantically. ¡°Yes¡ anything.¡±
He leaned in his voice a whisper that cut deeper than any blade. He told Akiko what he wanted.
Akiko¡¯s eyes widened in horror. Her body went cold as the weight of his demand settled over her. She shook her head, disbelief and terror written across her face. ¡°No¡ you can¡¯t mean¡¡±
¡°I do.¡± His tone was final. ¡°You asked for mercy, and this is the price of the mercy you seek.¡±
Akiko¡¯s heart raced uncontrollably within her chest, a primal drumbeat echoing in her ears. She felt the cold grip of despair tighten around her, squeezing the breath from her lungs. There was no way out, no glimmer of hope in the shadows that loomed ahead. Each step she contemplated was a reminder of the hopelessness that surrounded her. The choices that lay before her were stark, devoid of negotiations or compromises, all leading to the suffocating darkness of the path he had mercilessly carved for her. The weight of her reality settled heavily on her shoulders as a chill crept down her spine, filling her with a sense of impending doom.
***
Azriel stood at the entrance of the cave, watching Akiko vanish into the shadows, her footsteps fading as she carried his message to the rest of her kind. He mulled over everything he¡¯d learned from her. The Dodomeki¡¯s true objective wasn¡¯t just to kill him but to kidnap Yuki. Even Akiko hadn¡¯t known why. More perplexing was Yuki¡¯s heritage: a Kaiju¡¯s child.
Is her father a giant monster? Azriel shook his head, dismissing the thought. There were more pressing matters to deal with.
Turning back inside the cave, he approached the small figure curled up on the ground. Yuki was still fast asleep, undisturbed by the chaos that had unfolded. Azriel¡¯s eyes softened as he noticed the faint glow of the Dream Sheep Bedroll cocooning her, the enchantment likely keeping her deep in restful slumber.
¡°Small miracles,¡± he muttered, grateful for the item¡¯s efficacy.
Carefully, Azriel lifted Yuki, bedroll and all, cradling her against him. With a deep breath, he summoned his power, feeling the familiar pull of gravity bend to his will. He rose into the air, the ground shrinking beneath him as he flew, the strain of maintaining flight barely noticeable thanks to his newly enhanced reserves of mana.
Hours passed as he soared through the night sky, the distant horizon gradually giving way to dawn¡¯s faint light. The safe location Eve had mentioned finally came into view: a stunning Chinese-styled inn nestled in a secluded mountain pass. Its curved roofs and ornate wooden carvings reminded him of the martial arts movies and comics he used to enjoy with his dad.
As he descended, Azriel felt the tingle of a barrier parting around him, confirming the inn¡¯s protective wards. He landed softly in front of the entrance, the air around him still and peaceful. Stepping inside, he marveled at how pristine the interior was, capable of accommodating at least thirty guests with ease. The faint scent of incense lingered, calming and inviting.
Fatigue began to weigh on him as he found a room for Yuki. Gently, he placed her down, still wrapped in the Dream Sheep bedroll. She didn¡¯t stir. Satisfied that she was safe, Azriel quietly exited the room, closing the door behind him.
Finding a room of his own, he barely registered the soft bedding before sleep overtook him. He would deal with his system notifications and everything else in the morning.
***
Lady Kuroha awoke to the sharp sound of raised voices outside her tent, her irritation simmering just beneath the surface. Leida and the others'' audacity in disobeying her direct orders still fueled her anger. She rose gracefully, adjusting the silk drapes of her midnight-black robes before stepping outside.Stolen content warning: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.
The sight awaiting her was grim. The Dodomeki had gathered in a tense, silent circle. At the center knelt Akiko, drenched in blood, her eyes wide with shock and her breaths shallow and erratic.
Kuroha¡¯s crimson gaze narrowed. She strode forward, her presence demanding silence as she approached the trembling figure. ¡°Akiko,¡± she said, her voice cold but curious. ¡°What happened to you? And the others?¡±
Akiko¡¯s lips quivered as she struggled to form words. Finally, in a voice barely above a whisper, she uttered, ¡°Angel of vengeance.¡±
Kuroha tilted her head, confused. ¡°What did you say?¡±
Akiko¡¯s expression twisted into one of raw terror. Her voice broke as she screamed, ¡°The girl is protected by a celestial!¡±
The gathered Dodomeki recoiled, murmurs spreading like wildfire. The weight of Akiko¡¯s words sunk deep, a palpable fear gripping them. Celestials were forces none of them wanted to contend with.
Kuroha¡¯s gaze darkened. ¡°Where are the others?¡±
Akiko¡¯s trembling hand rose, pointing to a trail smeared with blood behind her. Kuroha¡¯s lips pressed into a thin line. Without a word, she signaled a handful of her most trusted Dodomeki and began following the grim path Akiko had left.
The forest was silent, unnervingly so, as they made their way deeper into the woods. The scent of blood thickened, hanging in the air like a warning. When they reached the clearing, Kuroha¡¯s eyes widened.
Their fallen sisters lay scattered, their bodies arranged to spell out a message in precise kanji, written in the blood of the dead:
"Follow if you dare."
Kuroha¡¯s fingers trembled as she adjusted the sleeves of her ornate black robes. The sight of her fallen sisters, their lifeless bodies scattered around the blood-painted kanji, sent a chill through her. Her carefully crafted plans were unraveling faster than she could mend them.
She stepped closer to Akiko, her voice low but sharp. ¡°You¡¯re certain?¡±
Akiko¡¯s bloodshot eyes flickered up. ¡°He¡¯s a celestial, Lady Kuroha. An angel of vengeance. I saw the wings, the halo... I felt the wrath. There¡¯s no doubt.¡± Her voice cracked, and she gripped her sides, rocking slightly. ¡°We don¡¯t stand a chance.¡±
Kuroha¡¯s eyes darkened. She clenched her fists, her long nails biting into her palms. ¡°Fools,¡± she muttered, thinking of Leida and the others. ¡°Defying my orders for what? Glory? Greed? Now look at us.¡±
She turned sharply, addressing the surrounding Dodomeki. ¡°Enough of this.¡± Her tone brooked no argument. ¡°We are done pursuing that girl and her protector. Gather what remains of our forces.¡±
The lieutenant took a cautious step forward, her voice trembling slightly. ¡°Lady Kuroha, what shall we do about our pact with Yamato?¡±
Kuroha¡¯s jaw tightened in frustration, her muscles coiling like a spring as doubt nibbled at the edges of her determination. For as long as she could remember, she had leaned heavily on Yamato, drawing strength from his unwavering support and the promises he had made. His words had painted a vivid picture of power waiting just within her reach, and the resources he had offered seemed boundless, a treasure trove for her ambitions. But now, as uncertainty crept into her mind, she felt the weight of her dependence pressing down on her like a heavy fog, threatening to suffocate her resolve. Doubts swirled within her, casting shadows over the confidence she once held. Would she ever be able to stand on her own?
¡°Forget the pact.¡± Her voice was steely. ¡°I will not send any more of my sisters to their deaths. Yamato can deal with this celestial if he wishes.¡±
She gestured to another Dodomeki. ¡°Contact him. Notify him that the deal is off. Whatever price we pay for breaking it is preferable to extinction.¡±
There was silence among the group, broken only by the rustling of the forest around them. Kuroha¡¯s eyes drifted back to the ominous kanji on the ground, her lips pressing into a thin line.
¡°I will not face him,¡± she said softly, more to herself than anyone else. ¡°Not now, not ever.¡±
***
Yuki¡¯s eyes fluttered open, the soft light filtering into the room surprising her. The scent of clean linen and incense filled the air, a stark contrast to the damp, earthy smell of the cave she had fallen asleep in. Confused, she sat up, glancing around the pristine room. The walls were adorned with simple but elegant wooden panels, and a small vase of flowers sat on a table near the window.
"Where...?" she muttered, rubbing her eyes.
A sudden sense of panic gripped her. She felt around frantically but found nothing¡ªno sword, no essence, not even the small urn holding her mother¡¯s ashes. Her heart raced as she darted around the room, checking under the bed, behind furniture, anywhere they might be.
"Gone?!" she gasped. Her mind raced with possibilities. Had Azriel left her somewhere safe and taken everything with him?
Before she could spiral further, a warm, savory scent wafted up from downstairs. Her nose twitched, and her stomach growled. "What is that?" she whispered, curiosity momentarily overriding panic.
She padded lightly down the long, polished hallway, the enticing aroma guiding her steps. As she turned the corner, she found herself in a spacious and sunlit kitchen that boasted gleaming countertops and rustic wooden cabinets. The warmth from the oven bathed the room in a comforting glow.
At the stovetop, Azriel stood effortlessly, his focus on the sizzling griddle before him. He was flipping pancakes, their golden-brown surfaces puffing up ever so slightly as he worked. A soft melody escaped his lips, weaving through the air along with the mouthwatering scent of warm batter and syrup.
Upon noticing her presence, he turned, his face lighting up with a lopsided grin that transformed his striking features. His eyes sparkled with mischief and warmth, making the space feel even cozier. The familiarity of the moment wrapped around her like a soft blanket, inviting her to step closer and share in the warmth of the kitchen.
¡°Morning, tiny tiger,¡± he greeted. ¡°Hope you¡¯re hungry.¡±
Yuki blinked. ¡°Where are we? And... what are you cooking?¡±
Azriel chuckled, gesturing to the food. ¡°Waffles, eggs, bacon. Found some supplies in a storage room. Had to get creative after a run-in with a weird monster made of waffle batter.¡± He winked, clearly joking.
Still feeling a bit disoriented, Yuki settled into the chair at the cozy dining table, the wood warm beneath her touch. Azriel moved gracefully around the kitchen, a smile playing on his lips as he served her a generous plate brimming with golden-brown waffles, their surfaces glistening with a hint of syrup. The crispy bacon, perfectly caramelized, lay beside the waffles, while fluffy scrambled eggs, light and airy, completed the feast. The rich, inviting aroma of the breakfast wafted through the air, wrapping around her like a comforting embrace.
As she stared at the food, Azriel casually reached out. From seemingly thin air, he pulled out the essence and sword, setting them gently beside her plate. Yuki¡¯s eyes widened in shock.
¡°How did you¡ª?¡±
Azriel sat down across from her. ¡°I¡¯ve got some tricks.¡± He leaned back in his chair. ¡°Those items were how the Dodomeki tracked you and your mom. Anything valuable can lead them straight to you.¡±
Yuki¡¯s hands tightened around the fork. ¡°Are they still following us?¡±
Azriel shook his head. ¡°Handled it. We¡¯re hours away from the cave, and they won¡¯t be bothering us again anytime soon.¡± He smiled reassuringly. ¡°Eat. You need your strength.¡±
Yuki hesitated, then slowly began eating. The food was surprisingly good, and for the first time in days, a sense of calm settled over her. Azriel watched her with a quiet, protective gaze, his expression soft but relentless.
Azriel leaned back in his chair, watching Yuki eat in silence. After a moment, he asked, "Yuki, where did you and your mother come from? How did you end up here?"
Yuki set her fork down, taking a deep breath as memories flooded back. She explained that she and her mother had lived in the Yokai realm, where her mother raised her alone after her father¡¯s death. Her father¡¯s actions before Yuki¡¯s birth led to their exile. Her mother had been cast out from her clan while pregnant with Yuki, forcing them to live in hiding.
For years, things were quiet. They managed to stay hidden until one fateful day when a group of people in red robes attacked their home. Yuki¡¯s mother grabbed a sword, a strange essence, and Yuki herself before escaping through a realm gate. Since that moment, the Dodomeki had been hunting them relentlessly. Yuki didn¡¯t know why; they had been running ever since.
Azriel listened carefully, his expression thoughtful. After a moment of silence, he asked, "What do you want to do now?"
Yuki didn¡¯t hesitate. ¡°I want to become strong. By any means necessary. I never want to run again.¡±
A faint smile tugged at the corner of Azriel¡¯s lips. He reached into what seemed like thin air, pulling out a neatly folded set of combat robes. The fabric shimmered faintly, a blend of black and deep crimson, with intricate patterns that looked like storm clouds and fire.
He placed the robes on the table. ¡°Put these on. Meet me outside when you¡¯re ready.¡±
Yuki¡¯s eyes widened as she reached out, running her fingers over the smooth fabric. ¡°Thank you,¡± she whispered, her voice filled with gratitude.
Azriel nodded, standing up and heading toward the door. As he left, Yuki clutched the robes to her chest, feeling a surge of hope and resolve. She hurried to her room and changed into the new outfit. The robes fit perfectly, were light yet durable, and gave her a sense of newfound confidence as she looked at herself in the mirror.
Stepping outside, she found Azriel waiting, arms crossed and a calm expression on his face. The morning air was crisp, filled with the scent of pine and distant rain. Yuki squared her shoulders, ready for whatever came next.

Kazuto Yamato sat before the communication orb; his brow furrowed in confusion as Lady Kuroha¡¯s words echoed in his mind. The information she had just shared left him stunned. He had expected more from the Dodomeki, especially after everything that had been invested in their mission.
Kuroha¡¯s voice, now laced with frustration, broke through his thoughts. "I''ve lost too many. The pact ends now. The sisters I sent with the expedition team will be pulled out."
Kazuto, caught off guard by her decision, tried to argue, ¡°Lady Kuroha, please reconsider. We can still salvage this. The mission isn¡¯t over yet.¡±
But Kuroha¡¯s tone remained firm, unwavering in its resolve. ¡°No, the decision is final. I¡¯ve lost too many to this cause. You¡¯ve seen the results for yourself.¡± Her voice softened briefly but then hardened again. ¡°The pact ends now.¡±
Before Kazuto could say another word, the communication orb flickered and went dark. The line was cut, leaving him staring at the blackened crystal in his hands. His frustration grew, and with a swift motion, he smashed the orb onto the ground, shards scattering across the floor. The room was heavy with tension, the remnants of his anger lingering in the air.
Kazuto clenched his fists, his body trembling slightly with rage. He had spent years working to position the Dodomeki in this world. To have it all unravel so easily, not because of poor planning or lack of strength but because the gods were seemingly turning against him, was infuriating. His mind drifted back to the Astral Dragon¡¯s words and the celestial forces conspiring against him. It was as if the very gods themselves were deliberately working to undermine him, to keep him from achieving his goals. The Celestial, with their overwhelming power, stood as a reminder of the forces that sought to make his mission impossible. His frustration swelled into a boiling rage, one that had been brewing for far too long.
Kazuto turned toward Yuta, who had been waiting patiently in the corner of the room. ¡°How far is the Citadel from here?¡± Kazuto asked, his voice sharp, barely masking the anger beneath it.
Yuta, unfazed by Kazuto¡¯s outburst, replied with calm precision. ¡°It will take us three weeks if nothing goes wrong during the journey.¡±
Kazuto¡¯s gaze hardened, his mind already racing through plans. "Get a force together. Three Silver Ranks, five Bronze Ranks. Depart immediately. Secure the Citadel at all costs."
Yuta gave a short nod, understanding the gravity of Kazuto¡¯s order. ¡°Understood. I¡¯ll see to it.¡± He quickly left, already organizing the force for the journey ahead.
Once Yuta had departed, a sudden presence filled the room. A crackling, almost tangible energy surged, the air thick with power. Crimson lightning danced across the walls, taking the form of an elemental being. Kazuto did not flinch, instead meeting the gaze of the elemental with a cold determination.
Kazuto remained calm, his resolve unwavering. However, as he gazed into the glowing crimson eyes of the elemental, he felt the weight of the god he worshipped pressing down on him. This sensation was familiar now: a constant oppression from beings far more powerful than he could ever be, always lurking in the background and pushing him back. He had experienced this feeling ever since encountering the Astral Dragon energy, and now, a Celestial stood in his way. It was these energies that made him feel as if the gods viewed him as a pawn to be played with. Kazuto¡¯s defiance ignited the fire within him.
¡°Do not worry,¡± Kazuto replied, his voice steady but cold, ¡°I shall find the girl.¡±
Kazuto¡¯s mind churned his body tight with a renewed sense of determination. He was done playing by the rules of the Celestial beings, the Astral Dragon, or anyone who thought they could control his fate. He would find the Kaiju girl, and when he did, everything would change. Not only his family but even the gods would learn that he was not to be underestimated.
Chapter 13: The Infinite Tempest
Azriel stood firmly across from Yuki in the sun-dappled courtyard, the warm breeze gently tousling his hair as he locked eyes with her. A hint of determination flickered in his gaze as he spoke, his voice steady and clear, ¡°Show me the essence your mother left you.¡± The weight of his request hung in the air, a mixture of curiosity and anticipation swirling between them.
Yuki hesitated before putting a small, glowing orb into his outstretched hand. Azriel activated his [Eyes of Nighthawk] and peered into the swirling energy within. His expression shifted to one of surprise and quiet awe.
- [Legendary]
- The essence of a kaiju that carries the power of a primordial storm is infused with the boundless power of wind, thunder, and lightning. It pulses with raw, untamed energy, capable of shaping both the wielder and the surroundings into manifestations of the storm''s fury.
- Due to its potency, the Infinite Tempest Essence can cause a [Path Evolution] regardless of the path¡¯s level.
¡°This is a Legendary Essence known as the Infinite Tempest,¡± Azriel said.
Yuki tilted her head, confused. ¡°Is that important?¡±
Azriel handed the orb back to her, his mind already calculating. ¡°It¡¯s more than important. It¡¯s rare and incredibly powerful.¡± He leaned forward. ¡°Do you truly want to become stronger?¡±
¡°More than anything,¡± Yuki said, determination blazing in her eyes.
¡°What paths do you have?¡±
¡°[War Monk], [Sword Saint], and [Tracker],¡± she replied.
Azriel considered each option. Tracker isn¡¯t relevant here. His eyes flicked back to Yuki as he thought of the stories he¡¯d read in Tales of Astraquilla. One name stood out: Sarah Dayne, a [Sword Saint]; his great-grandfather Arthur spoke of her in high regard. If Sarah still lived, she¡¯d be his grandfather¡¯s age, but her legend remained vivid in his mind. Sarah Dayne grew up on an island nation with her father, a famous blacksmith named Link Dayne, who created her signature blade, Devouring Moon. One night, a notorious vampire pirate named Sevagoth raided their home to steal Link''s sword. He brutally murdered Sarah''s father in front of her and set the house ablaze, leaving Sarah for dead. She survived the attack, and with his great grandfather¡¯s help, she was able to bring down Sevagoth and take back the sword he had stolen.
Sword Saints were like broken characters in a game, completely overpowered, unbalanced, and never patched. If Yuki had chosen that path, her power would have been immense, but strength without discipline was dangerous.
¡°[War Monk],¡± Azriel pronounced, his voice steady and firm. ¡°It¡¯s a formidable path, though perhaps not as glamorous as the [Sword Saint]. Still, it is steadfast, and one can rely on it. Absorb the essence and evolve that path.¡±
Yuki¡¯s brow furrowed. ¡°Are you sure? What if it doesn¡¯t work?¡±
Azriel¡¯s gaze never wavered. ¡°If you want strength, you need to trust me. Do it.¡±
Taking a deep breath, Yuki pressed the orb to her chest. The essence dissolved into her, vanishing in a burst of light. For a moment, nothing happened. Yuki blinked. ¡°What now?¡±
Her question trailed off, lost in the heavy silence around them, as her eyes slipped into a distant realm, rolling back almost as if she were in a trance. Slowly, her body began to ascend from the ground, weightless and ethereal, emanating a soft glow that flickered like candlelight. A mesmerizing swirl of energy enveloped her, akin to a tempest brewing in the heart of a storm, vibrant and alive.
Azriel stood captivated, his gaze fixed on her as the aura intensified, swirling in shades of deep blue and silver reminiscent of thunderclouds charged with electric potential. It felt familiar, almost nostalgic, but he couldn¡¯t pin the memory. As he watched her rise, his heart raced with a mix of awe and trepidation, aware that he was witnessing something extraordinary and utterly beyond his understanding.
He stood there, weighing his options as he considered stepping in to help, but uncertainty held him back. It seemed wiser to let the situation unfold on its own, allowing events to take their natural course. A flicker of frustration crossed his face as he glanced toward the corner of his vision, where a stream of persistent red notifications flashed ominously from his locked status window. Each alert felt like a siren, urgent and demanding attention, yet the system had been locked in its update cycle for what seemed like hours. This seemingly endless process had left him in a state of unawareness, deprived of critical information that could influence his next move. He felt a growing anxiety as he struggled with the dual pressures of wanting to intervene and the nagging sense of vulnerability resulting from his technological limitations.
With a heavy, resigned sigh, Azriel lowered himself to the ground, settling into a cross-legged position. He closed his eyes gently, allowing the world around him to fade into a distant hum. Drawing in a deep breath, he began to center his thoughts, feeling the familiar warmth of energy pooling within him. He understood that if Yuki needed him, he must be ready to respond without hesitation. For the moment, however, all he could do was wait in the quiet stillness, honing his focus and preparing himself for whatever challenges lay ahead.
***
Yuki blinked as her vision swam, the sensation of floating giving way to solid ground beneath her feet. When she opened her eyes fully, she found herself standing on an island suspended in the sky. Wisps of cloud drifted lazily around the edges of the floating landmass, and the air crackled with a strange, electric energy.
She stood in front of an ancient and regal grand temple, its stone steps leading up to a set of towering doors. Immense azure-leafed trees surrounded the structure, its branches swaying gently despite the absence of any wind. Each leaf shimmered with an ethereal glow, casting soft blue light across the temple grounds.
Yuki¡¯s gaze traveled upward, drawn to a single giant katana hovering in the tree''s air. It was forged from pure lightning, and arcs of electricity danced along its blade. The weapon pulsed with energy, each crackle punctuating the silence like distant thunder.
¡°Where¡ am I?¡± she whispered, taking a cautious step forward. The ground beneath her feet felt solid, yet weightless, as though the island itself was part of the storm-filled sky.
A low rumble rolled across the landscape, reverberating through the ground beneath her feet, and Yuki instinctively looked up. Her breath caught in her throat as she took in the sight before her. Towering overhead, the sky twisted and churned violently in a vortex of ominous dark clouds, each one heavier and more menacing than the last. Jagged flashes of lightning sliced through the gloom, momentarily illuminating the swirling chaos with a stark white light that contrasted sharply against the deepening shadows.
The storm raged with unrelenting ferocity, with winds howling like restless spirits. Yet, an inexplicable sense of serenity cocooned the island as if it existed in a bubble completely separate from the upheaval above. The air was thick with moisture, and the scent of rain mingled with the earthy aroma of the forest, creating a strange juxtaposition of turmoil and tranquility that left Yuki both awed and unsettled.
Yuki¡¯s eyes darted around, fear and confusion evident on her face. She took a hesitant step forward, the howling winds tugging at her clothes. The sky rumbled ominously, and the storm¡¯s fury seemed to press down on her.
Suddenly, Azriel appeared beside her, hands in his pockets, looking up at the storm. He let out a low whistle. ¡°Now that¡¯s a storm.¡±
Yuki jumped at his sudden presence, her voice shaky. ¡°W-What is this? Where are we?¡±
Azriel glanced down at her, his expression calm. ¡°We¡¯re inside your soul. And that storm?¡± He nodded toward the swirling chaos above. ¡°That¡¯s the Essence. The Infinite Tempest.¡±
Yuki blinked, still processing what Azriel had just said. ¡°Wait¡ inside my soul? What does that even mean?¡± Her voice quivered, equal parts confusion and disbelief.
Azriel shrugged casually, keeping his gaze on the raging storm. ¡°Yeah, I decided to call it a soul realm. That makes sense, right? I had this run-in with a god once she tried to take control of me through my soul.¡± He smirked, tapping his temple. ¡°Fought her off. Not something I¡¯d recommend, but it worked out.¡±
Yuki''s eyes grew impossibly large, a mix of disbelief and excitement flashing across her face. "A god?"
¡°Absolutely,¡± Azriel said, his voice steady and calm as if he were discussing the weather rather than the chaotic scene unfolding before them. He gestured toward the storm that roiled in the sky, a churning vortex of dark clouds illuminated sporadically by brilliant bolts of lightning that splintered the heavens. The air was thick with tension, a palpable energy that crackled like static before a storm, sending shivers down Yuki¡¯s spine. The clouds twisted and turned, shifting shapes as if they were alive, a swirling mass that seemed to beckon the unwary closer. Each flash of lightning illuminated the landscape, revealing the gnarled trees that bent under the weight of the wind and the restless lake that mirrored the chaos above with choppy, angry waves. Thunder rumbled in the distance, a deep growl that echoed through the valley, warning of the storm''s imminent arrival.
¡°What do I do with the storm?¡± Yuki asked frantically, hoping for the answer.
Azriel¡¯s expression hardened, his voice steady. ¡°This place is yours to command. And that storm?¡± He pointed with certainty, his gaze unwavering. ¡°It¡¯s woven into the very fabric of who you are now. Embrace it; you need to evolve your path.¡±
Yuki¡¯s eyes followed his hand as he gestured toward the towering temple in the distance, framed by the twisting storm. ¡°That¡¯s your [War Monk] path,¡± he continued. ¡°But it¡¯s incomplete.¡±
She furrowed her brow. ¡°Incomplete?¡±
Azriel nodded. ¡°To unlock its full potential, you need to pull the storm from the sky. Infuse it into the temple. Merge the two, and you¡¯ll truly begin to understand your power.¡± His gaze softened, but his tone remained firm. ¡°You¡¯ve got this, Tiny Tiger.¡±Support the creativity of authors by visiting the original site for this novel and more.
Yuki swallowed hard, staring at the roaring tempest above. Her fists clenched. Embrace it. She took a deep breath and stepped forward, determination burning in her eyes.
Yuki stood amidst the tumultuous winds, her heart racing as the storm raged above her, a symphony of chaos. She inhaled deeply, the crisp, charged air filling her lungs, and closed her eyes, allowing the howling gales to wash over her like a wild tide. She reached out not with her hands but with her very essence, her will igniting like a flame in the heart of the storm. Focus. Control it.
In her mind''s eye, she envisioned the storm as a living being, a feral creature waiting to be tamed. She commanded the swirling clouds, picturing them bending to her might, imagining the crackling lightning shimmering in response to her intuition. Slowly, she opened her eyes, revealing iridescent azure light that flickered like the depths of the ocean, pulsing with power.
Above her, the storm roared defiantly, a cacophony of wind and thunder that echoed in the vast emptiness of the sky. But Yuki¡¯s resolve was unshakeable, an unyielding force that flared brighter than the storm itself. With a sharp, decisive pull of her will, the dark, swirling clouds began their descent, reluctantly obeying her fervent call. Thunder crashed like a furious beast as lightning ripped through the sky, twisting and arching in a wild dance, surrendering to her command as the tumultuous tempest spiraled toward the ancient temple below.
As the storm¡¯s energy fused with the temple, a surge of power rushed through her, and a glowing notification flashed in her vision:

Yuki gasped, feeling the newfound strength coursing through her veins. Azriel, standing calmly beside her, gave a satisfied nod. Yuki gazed at the temple before her, its structure unlike anything she had ever seen. The architecture was both elegant and imposing, crafted from sleek, storm-worn stone that seemed to hum with an energy all its own. The walls of the temple were adorned with intricate carvings of swirling winds, lightning bolts, and figures in dynamic, combat-ready stances. At the center of it all stood a towering statue of a monk holding a katana aloft, its blade crackling with an ethereal storm. The air around it shimmered with static as if the very atmosphere was charged with power.
She realized that the temple was the path of the [Stormbound Ascetic], which seemed to pulse in time with the storm now suspended above them. Yuki could feel its power and weight pressing down on her. It was a physical manifestation of her will, now intertwined with the storm and her new path.
Azriel stood next to her, watching her closely. "This is your path, Yuki. The Stormbound Ascetic is where your training begins. The storm, your soul''s storm, is now part of you. Your strength will grow so long as you keep fighting."
Yuki took a hesitant step forward, her heart pounding in her chest. The temple beckoned her, its energy calling her to step inside, to claim her newfound strength. She was no longer the girl who had fled through realms, running from a past she didn''t understand. She was something more now. Something... stronger.
Taking a deep, steadying breath, she approached the ancient temple, its towering columns rising like sentinels against the stormy sky. Each step she took imbued her with a growing sense of purpose, her resolve solidifying with every heartbeat. This moment was not just an event; it was her destiny unfolding, a pivotal chapter in her evolution. The tempest that had once churned anxiety within her was no longer an adversary to dread; it was a force she could harness and a power she could command as she embraced the chaos around her.

Rhaeros, an ancient dragon with avian traits, bore wings that resembled the vast feathers of an owl, vast enough to blend seamlessly with the night sky. His eyes were keen, with otherworldly wisdom that spoke of centuries of study and mastery over magic. His long, white beard cascaded down like a silken waterfall, marking him as a dragon who had spent ages contemplating the mysteries of the universe.
Despite his power, he was gravely injured. His wings, once strong and graceful, were now torn and battered, with deep wounds that seeped magical energy into the air. Rhaeros could feel his life force waning, the once-immense aura of his being dimming with every passing moment. His mind was still sharp, though, and a single thought consumed him.
He needed to pass his power on. The time had come for him to find someone worthy of inheriting his knowledge and abilities, someone with the potential to carry on his legacy.
There was an astral presence of a potential candidate within reach. A maximum of a week away. He could feel it, a faint but undeniable pull of magic. It was his only hope. His wings would carry him there, even if it took every ounce of strength he had left.
With a final breath, Rhaeros pushed forward, the flicker of determination in his amber eyes never fading, even as his body faltered.

Azriel smiled as he examined the numerous changes around him. As the system''s energy flooded in, he felt himself becoming even stronger. The thrill of leveling up was exhilarating, but he couldn''t shake the unease about his actions from the night before regarding the Dodomeki that had attacked him. Why did I do that to the bodies? He wondered.
Azriel sensed that Yuki had completed her Path Evolution, and she gently lowered herself back onto her feet. He noticed that she appeared slightly taller now, and her white hair, highlighted by black stripes, gave her a tiger-like appearance. The stripes in her hair crackled with blue lightning. When Yuki opened her eyes, Azriel saw that her pupils were slit like a cat''s, and her irises shimmered with blue lightning.
¡°How does your new powers feel?¡± Azriel asked with a grin.
¡°I feel amazing,¡± Yuki responded quickly. ¡°I have so much energy I have no idea what to do with it.¡±
Azriel flicked his hand, and his gun blade appeared in his hand. He pointed at Yuki¡¯s sword, which was on the ground after she had started her Path Evolution. Azriel made the come at me gesture. Yuki took the hint within an instant; she picked up and drew her sword in one fluid motion.
¡°Time to begin your training, Tiny Tiger. Show me what you got!¡±
