 First love

    The sky was clear and there wasn''t any sign that it was going to rain again,it has been raining for over one week now, with the rain giving only five minutes break and continuing again immediately after that, but still Cassandra had to go to school with it, she didn''t like the idea of moving to the UK, she really loved the United States and had made lots of friends there but her parents said they had to move because they didn''t like her choice of friends which she wasn''t ready to give up, so they moved to UK immediately after she was done with middle school.


    "I don''t think it''s going to rain today hun!" Priscilla yelled.


    Priscilla was Cassandra''s mom, she was tall,fair and pretty just like Cassandra was going to be, but Cassandra wasn''t as fair as her because her dad wasn''t white, his skin colour was a more of a yellow.


    "Are you sure mom" Cassandra yawned, stepping out of the front porch and rubbing her eyes.


    "Yeah, the sky''s really bright today"


    "I can see" Cassandra said removing her hands from her eyes."I just hope it stays this way"


    "I''m sure it will"Priscilla said, rubbing Cassandra''s hair.


    "Oh you guys are up already" Fred said, stepping into the porch.


    Fred was Cassandra''s dad,he wasn''t that handsome but his smile was the charm that attracted Priscilla to him, Priscilla was taller than him but he wasn''t short either,his height was just average but still you would never underestimate him to be a high school boy, because those huge chest hairs didn''t say so.


    "Dad I''ve told you to stop calling us guys we are not men" Cassandra winced.


    "Yeah, but in this case you are a girl and your mother is a woman,so I have to work with what I have"


    "I''m already sixteen, that makes me a young woman not girl"


    "Wrong" Fred wove his head."That still makes you a girl"


    "C''mon Fred" Priscilla said.


    "What? you know I''m not lying.


    "You are lying" Cassandra cut in sharply.


    "Don''t listen to him hun, go take your bath while I prepare breakfast for you"


    Cassandra reluctantly left looking at his dad who was smiling at her.


    "Silly Fred" She heard mom punch dad as she entered the building.

    Cassandra quickly cleared out the dishes from the dining table and kissed her mom good bye before heading off to school.As she walked along the road to school she could get a clear view of the city and then she noticed that it wasn''t as bad as she thought, infact the streets of London was a nice scene to behold, she hadn''t been able to see all this because for the past one week that they moved here she had to go to school in the rain with an umbrella that wasn''t really much help when it mattered.She gazed at her watch and noticed that she was running late,and coming late to school was something she really disliked,so she had to double up in order to get to school on time.While she was running she wasn''t really paying attention to what was in front of her and then she bumped in to someone and they both went crashing on the ground.


    "Awww!" Cassandra yelled suddenly.


    The person quickly got up and offered his hand to Cassandra who was still sitting on the floor.


    "I''m sorry"


    Cassandra was reluctant to take his hand, maybe because he had a cap covering his face.


    "Take my hand let me help you up" he insisted.


    Cassandra took his hand, but reluctantly,while he was trying to pull Cassandra up his hat fell off and then Cassandra was shocked and frozen by the handsomeness she was staring directly into its eye.


    "Hey I''m sorry for running into you there" he apologized.


    Cassandra was totally frozen, she didn''t know what to say.


    "Are you okay?"


    Cassandra nods to tell him she''s okay, but her altitude seems to be making him feel uncomfortable.


    "Ok I''ll be on my way now" he said, bending down to pick his cap.


    "No wait,what''s your name" those words seemed to have flown out without any control.


    "You can call me Devon" he said putting on his hat.


    "He looks so cute without that hat" Cassandra murmured.


    "What was that?"


    "Nothing" she wove her head."So Devon''s your name"


    "Yes, what of you miss?"


    "Cassandra" she replied with a little blush.


    "Nice to meet you Cassandra" he said extending his hand for a shake.


    Cassandra accepted the handshake after looking at his face severally.


    "I''ll be on my way now"


    "Can I come with you?" Cassandra wasn''t sure she was the one controlling her mouth.


    "You look like you are already going somewhere"


    "How do you know that?"


    "Your backpack"


    "Anyone can where a backpack"


    "I really appreciate your offer to escort me Cassandra, but you are already late for school,see you around" Devon said and quickly ran off,so that Cassandra would stop delaying herself.


    "Don''t you go to school?!" Cassandra yelled.


    "I do!" Devon yelled back.


    Cassandra watched him until he was out of sight,then she checked her watch and realized that she had only one minute left to get to school,then the running continued.


    Cassandra was already two minutes late when she got to school which wasn''t bad because everyone was still getting ready for class when she badged in to the class panting like someone who had just ran a cross country race.


    "What''s wrong with her?" someone asked in the class.


    Cassandra didn''t really care about what they were saying, she slowly walked to her desk and started to arrange her books.When she was done she took her seat and was ready for the day''s learning, while she was waiting for the teacher, she noticed the desk beside her that had been unoccupied during the past one week she had been in the school and then she began to wonder who sat there, that was when her thoughts returned to Devon. "Maybe he''s the one" she thought. But she later shunned. "No... he''s too handsome to be here" she whispered to herself, looking at all the boys in the class, looking at all of them she couldn''t get the feeling she got when she saw Devon.She decided to give up fantasizing about Devon sitting beside her and think of how cute he was that morning, while she was thinking the door knob started to move, everyone including Cassandra thought it was their teacher, but when the door opened standing before them was a very familiar face to all of them.

 He comes with trouble

    "Where''ve you been bro?" a boy hit Devon on the back as he entered the class.


    "I''ve been sick"Devon replied.


    Cassandra couldn''t believe this,all her assumptions had turned out to be true, but that didn''t mean the seat beside her was his.


    "Devon!" Diana quickly sprinted to Devon and embraced him,Devon didn''t really seem interested in the hug.


    Diana was a girl who claimed to be the most beautiful girl in school, she was tall fair and had a charming smile that would make any man do whatever she wanted.Devon on the other hand was for sure the most handsome in the school, with a fairly dark skin and a good height for a boy of his age together with his pink lips and dimples any girl would easily fall for him.


    "Ouch! you are cracking my ribs" Devon said in order to break the hug which had lasted for a minute now.


    "I hope you are okay now?"she asks placing her hand on his cheek.


    "I''m okay" Devon replied, removing her hand from his face.


    "Too bad you have to sit with that weirdo over there"Diana said, pointing backwards with her thumb.


    Cassandra had been watching Diana hug and talk with Devon and you could tell that something was boiling inside her.


    "Who?"Devon raises his head to look at his seat and then his eyes meets with Cassandra''s.


    Mrs Patricia suddenly enters the class and orders everyone to go to their seats.Devon keeps looking at Cassandra while walking to his seat but she pretends not to be seeing him.


    "You didn''t tell me you attended this school" Devon bent and whispered to Cassandra immediately he sat down.


    "You didn''t ask" Cassandra whispered back."And you didn''t tell me you go to school here either"


    "You also didn''t ask"


    "I think we should stop before the teacher spots us" Cassandra said and quickly pulls her head up, Devon does the same too.


    Mrs Patricia was still talking when the bell went off for lunch break.Cassandra wanted to leave but she wanted Devon to leave before her.


    "Are you not going for lunch break?"Devon asked.

    "Come, let''s go have lunch" Devon said, extending his hand to her.


    "Are you sure?" Cassandra said, looking at the opposite direction to see Diana who was walking up to them now.


    Cassandra really wanted to follow Devon in the morning when they met, but now she was having second thoughts on whether she should take his hand and go have lunch with him.


    "Hello darling"


    Diana quickly pulled Devon''s hand which he had extended to Cassandra and pecks him.


    "Are you ready for our lunch break?"


    "I don''t have any lunch plans with you today" Devon said with a smirk.


    "But we always have lunch together"


    "When last did that happen?"


    In as much as, Diana was really beautiful Devon only took her as just a friend and he didn''t even like staying around her, because of the way she would always try to force him to do something or be like someone else with her constant pleadings.


    "C''mon Devon"


    "Don''t worry you can have lunch with Edwin over there" Devon said, pointing at a blonde boy who was reading on his desk.


    "C''mon you know he''s not my type"


    "Who said anything about your type here.Are you looking for someone to have lunch with or a boyfriend?"


    "Devon"


    "Fine I''m no longer having lunch anymore" Devon takes his seat.


    "Why are you behaving like this?"


    "Nothing,I just lost my appetite now"

    "Yes"


    "Are you sure you don''t want to eat anything?"


    "I told you I''ve lost my appetite"


    "Ok how about I bring your lunch for you here in the class?"

    "And who are you to tell me the rules here?" Diana asked giving her a stern look.


    Cassandra slowly bowed her head, she didn''t like looking for trouble,let alone with someone with so much ego.


    "I''m going to bring it hun" Diana said and started to leave.


    "I won''t eat it!" Devon yelled immediately she was about to close the door behind herself.


    "What is wrong with him?" she slammed the door in anger."Maybe it''s that new girl that is sitting beside him.


    That wasn''t true, this wasn''t the first time Devon was refusing to have lunch with her but she will keep persuading him to do so, Devon had agreed on few occasions,on other occasions he had to disappear before the bell for lunch break rang or he would pretend that he wasn''t hungry.


    "Is she your girlfriend?" Cassandra asked after Diana had left.


    "No"


    "Wife"


    "No" Devon laughed."She''s not my wife"


    "Then what is she to you?"


    "No ¡­." Devon stopped to rethink what he was about to say."We are just friends"


    "Doesn''t seem like that to me" Cassandra murmured.


    "What was that?"


    "Nothing"


    "So, about that lunch"


    "I thought you weren''t hungry"


    "I am, I''m just not hungry to eat with Diana"


    "But don''t you think she will be mad if she see''s you in the cafeteria with me after everything you told her"


    "Don''t worry she won''t do anything" Devon said trying to pull Cassandra along with him.


    "No"Cassandra pulled back her hands.


    "Seriously?"


    "I don''t like trouble"


    "Ok have your way then,we can order pizza"


    "And who''s paying?"


    "Don''t worry it''s on me" Devon said pulling out a smartphone from his pocket.


    Diana was really annoyed with the way Devon had treated him and was talking to herself while walking to her class,lunch break wasn''t over yet but she had lost her appetite immediately she stepped out of the class,she was planning to keep malice with Devon but what she saw when she opened the door to her class she wasn''t able to withhold, Devon was chatting and smiling with Cassandra while eating pizza.


    "I should have known!"he yells at Devon''s face after walking up to them.


    "Known what?"


    "I thought you weren''t hungry?"


    "I regained my appetite after you left"


    "So I''m now the reason you lose your appetite"


    "You are the one that said that"


    Cassandra had stopped eating the pizza when she saw Diana.


    "And you" Diana said, she was referring to Cassandra now.


    "What?"


    "You''ve just started something and I''m not sure you are going to be able to finish it" you could tell there was hate in that voice.


    "And what''s that?" Cassandra was talking to her boldly now.


    Diana gives her a long stern look and then turns to look at Devon who was busy munching on a slice of pizza before returning to her seat.


    "I thought you said she wasn''t your girlfriend?"


    "She isn''t"


    "Then what is....."


    Before Cassandra could finish her statement the bell for class resumption rang and soon the class was starting to get filled up,then Mrs Patricia appeared and continued from where she stopped.

    Cassandra felt awkward sitting close to Devon now as the teacher spoke, she couldn''t wait for school to be over so that she could disappear, she really didn''t expect all that had happened today, she was crushing on Devon for sure but she didn''t expect him to like her back so quickly or was he doing this to get back at Diana for something, either way, she wasn''t sure she liked having enemies. The bell rang to mark the end of the day in the school, Cassandra quickly got up to leave before Devon would ask her to walk home with him.


    "Hey, are you leaving so soon?"


    Too late it was going to happen anyway.


    "Yes, the bell said I should do so," Cassandra said, adjusting her backpack on her back.


    "That doesn''t mean you should leave immediately."


    "But I have to get home as fast as possible to help my mom with some things," Cassandra said and tried to walk out but Devon blocked her.


    "Come on if she couldn''t do those things alone then she wouldn''t have sent you to school," Devon said.


    "Yes, but that doesn''t mean she won''t need my help"


    Cassandra thought Devon wouldn''t like her that much but right now it seemed like he was more desperate to be with her than she was in the morning.


    "Come on Cassara...."


    "It''s Cassandra."


    "Yes Cassandra is a really cute name."


    "Really."


    "What?"


    "Do you expect me to thank you."


    "No, I just want to walk home with you."


    And that was what she was avoiding, she didn''t know what to say ordinarily she would love to walk home with him, but she didn''t want jealous Diana to start spreading rumors all over the school that something was up between them.


    "You want to walk home with me?" Cassandra said she wasn''t expecting that request.


    "Yes."


    Meanwhile, Diana was watching both of them from her seat and the amount of hate and jealousy burning in her now was unexplainable.


    "Are you sure?"


    "I wouldn''t ask if I wasn''t sure."


    "Hey Devon, are you not coming?" a boy asked, there was a group of them standing at the door and it was obvious they were waiting for Devon.


    "I think I''ll pass today," Devon said.


    "Are you sure you don''t want to come?"


    "Yes I''m sure."


    "Ok," he said with a disappointed voice.

    "Ok, I have to go now, bye." Cassandra turned to leave but Devon pulled her back, pulling her very close to himself now.


    "You haven''t answered my request yet."


    "What do you want me to say?" Cassandra grumbled, she was aware that Diana was watching them.


    "I want you to say yes."


    Diana stood up from her seat now and was walking towards the both of them, Cassandra was watching her as she approached them but Devon didn''t see her yet. When she got close she gave Cassandra a mean smirk and just as she was about to walk past them she shoved her Cassandra fell to the ground while Devon attempted to catch her.


    "What was that for?" Devon asked angrily.


    Diana didn''t say anything, she just looked at Cassandra who was trying to get up now and it didn''t look like she was going to fight back.


    "You''ll regret this." Diana said before walking away quickly, she turned to look at Devon before exiting the class.


    "Are you okay?" Devon said, trying to help Cassandra clean her body but she drew away from him.


    "I think your plan worked. I''ll be leaving now."


    She tried to leave again and Devon pulled her back again.


    "Devon I want to go home!" Cassandra let out a little yell, but there weren''t many people left in the class to draw attention.


    "Fine let''s go together," Devon said, quickly sliding his backpack on his Cassandra hissed and quickly left the class while Devon followed quickly behind her.


    "Come on Cassara, slow down!" Devon yelled as they got out on the road.


    "I''ve told you it''s Cassandra," Cassandra said, stopping and turning to him now.


    "I know that was meant to slow you down," Devon said panting and hurriedly walking up to her."Man, you walk really fast!"


    Cassandra couldn''t hold in the laughter that was building up inside her because of how silly Devon looked now and soon found herself giggling.


    "Oh now I''m funny because I told you the truth," Devon said, still panting.


    "You look silly," Cassandra said, still giggling.


    "It''s good that you are no longer mad at me," Devon said, regaining his breath now.


    "Yes it''s good," Cassandra said, her mood had gone back to sour now.


    "C''mon I didn''t know she was going to push you"


    "If you hadn''t kept me there she wouldn''t have pushed me in the first place."


    "Fine, I''m sorry!" Those words seem to have come out faster than expected.


    Cassandra turned her back on him now, she was about to walk away from him when she felt a hand on her shoulder.


    "Cassandra please, I''m sorry."


    "You said my name right now," she muttered.


    "Does that mean that I''m forgiven?"


    "Ehhhhhhhhh..."


    "C''mon!"


    "Only if you promise never to force me to do anything again."


    "Fine I promise."


    "So you finally got that walk home."


    "Felt more like running a marathon race."


    "Oh sorry" Cassandra giggled." But we still have a little distance to walk.


    "Well let''s make it a good walk."


    "Sure," Cassandra said as they both started to walk down the road while discussing with each other.

    Cassandra checked her watch as she approached the house she should have been home an hour ago but Devon had caused her to come home late, but on the other hand, she really enjoyed his company and how he gave her a little detail about the school and the type of people that were in their class. Cassandra slowly opened the door and was surprised that the sitting room was dark, maybe they went out, she thought, and then made her way to her room upstairs without turning on the lights.


    "You are late Cassandra." she heard her mom''s voice when she was halfway up the stairs.


    The room was so dark that she didn''t notice her mother walking into the sitting room from the kitchen.


    "Mom. Is that you?" she asked nervously.


    "Do you live with another woman in this house?"


    "I''m sorry mom I had to finish up some things before coming home."


    "It''s okay," Priscilla said, turning on the lights now."I hope you made a friend today?"


    "Ehhhh¡­.."


    "Don''t tell me you still didn''t..."


    "I did."


    "Really?"


    "Yes."


    "Who''s the person?"


    "Ehh.. mom I''m tired I''ll tell you later."


    "Ok go up and change I prepared your favorite meal"


    "I would really need that now," Cassandra said, taking off her backpack from her back.


    "Go change then."
