    "A royal ring is missing. It is a gold ring with an enchanted ruby. A gift from the moon goddess to the king. A priceless gem." people began to murmur.


    "It was ced in a safe and kept in throne room. One amongst you has stolen it." more murmurs.


    "Quiet. We are giving the thief a chance to return the ring before morning and your punishment will be reduced." Nobody moved.


    "A thorough search will be done in the ve quarters through the night. Woe to whoever has it in her possession."


    "You will remain outside until the search ispleted and will be denied food." He left with the guards he came in with. The other guards stood around us. During the night, the guards changed every three hours.


    At the break of dawn, Roman came out. A sick smile on his face. He held up a ring that glinted.


    "Lily of the East." Lily trembled like a leaf beside me. She clutched her dress tightly and stood up quietly. Guards came to her and pushed her to the front. She was forced on her knees before Roman. He fisted her hair and turned her to face the crowd.


    "This is the thief." had she really stolen the ring?

The hands holding me left me and I felt the prick of a needle. The pain diminished gradually until I lost sense of my surroundings.


    I woke up with a pounding head and a dry throat. Two men were talking.


    "Her body rejected your blood."

Beta Valdus had a frown on his face, Royal chief guard Noir stood expressionless. Jairus had an annoyed look on his face and Thane had a furious one. He was visibly shaking in anger. Why though? He tried to kill me too. He turned to me sharply. He must have heard my thoughts.


    He shed his wrist with his ws and put it against my mouth.

They discussed about starvation in some sections and I listened with rapt attention. Jairus made some suggestions and Thane nodded to them. They seemed to have a close rtionship. I smiled as I looked at them. The conversation stopped when a knock sounded on the door.

    "Come in" Thane called out. Kyros stepped in. Jairus cleaned his mouth, giving me a smile and nodded at Kyros as he left. "My king" he bowed his head in greeting.


    "What do you want?"


    "I came to seek your permission on behalf of Esme." he looked between us.


    "Whatever for?"


    "She wants to volunteer at the infirmary"


    "No" my heart sank.


    "My king...."


    Thane interrupted him "If that is all you may leave now." Kyros looked like he wanted to say more but he turned and left.


    I was fuming in anger. I angrily packed the dishes and stormed out of the room. My anger reduced before I entered the study again.

    He showed me the area where the children were kept and told me what to do. The children area was more like a daycare.     I straightened out my dress again as I waited nervously behind therge doors. I had spent thest three hours with the maids getting ready for the ball and the oue was marvelous.

    A small group of people came up to us and bowed.

    "Rise" I smiled at them and they left. The next group came and bowed.

    The royal advisors of the North, Beta Valdus and his mate, and Noir also pledged their allegiance. A few other important people also came but I wasn''t paying attention anymore.


    The betas of each section was supposed to be present for this ball. I searched for the familiar face of my beta.


    Thane ced his hands on mine and whispered in a low voice. "What is it little mate" I shook my head and smiled at him.

    Someone cleared their throat and we turned to see Eridian standing there. I smiled at him and he smiled in return.


    "A pleasure to be your subject" he bowed and gave Thane a brief nce before walking into the crowd.


    Carlyn sashayed to the throne and bowed with a fake smile on he face. She looked at Thane a bit long for my liking. I hissed at her and held his hands tightly, marking my territory. She looked taken back for a bit but regained herposure and walked away.


    Thane rubbed his hands soothingly over mine while trying to hide his chuckle. I gave him an annoyed nce and focused on the crowd.


    I stood up as soon as I spotted the face I was searching for. Thane held my hands as I tried to walk towards him. I looked at him and he shook his head. I looked back to him and saw two set of familiar faces walking towards us.


    As soon as they were Infront of me, I ran into my mother''s arms.


    "Mama I''ve missed you so much" she hugged me tightly while sobbing quietly. I turned toy papa and hugged him when there was a loud growl. I turned to Thane and he had an annoyed look on his face. He gently pried me from my father''s arms and into his arms.


    "Your highness" Beta Argus bowed.


    "Thank you for bringing them with you"


    "It was an order from the king" I turned to him and mouthed a thank you. I spoke with my parents briefly and they moved on so I could greet other guests.


    "Thank you so much" he kissed the side of my head. Jairus came in a few momentster with a girl on his arms. We shared a hug as he congratted me again. His date smiled shyly and kept her head bowed throughout our encounter.


    Thane and Jairus seemed to be on good terms now but he didn''t say anything to his father. He merely nodded at him and walked away with his date.


    A loud ng was heard and silence fell over the ball room. Thane stood up and held his hands out for me. I took his hands and stood up.


    "I wee you all to this celebration. As per customs, it is held in honour of our queen, my mate. See her face, know her. You''ve all sworn allegiance. Any evil thought or deed against her is considered treason" he lifted my hands up and pushing his dominance out so that everybody fell on their knees. He held me tightly so I didn''t fall down too.


    Once he was sure the message had been gotten he released the air. Everybody stood up one after the order and bowed in unison.


    The ball continued and soon it was time for dancing. I and Thane had the first dance and soon others joined. I danced with Jairus and Eridian and others. Thane also danced with a few people but I felt his eyes on me the whole time even when he danced with that Carlyn.


    I felt satisfaction deep down because, even though she was in his arms, I was on his mind.


    The ball finally came to an end and the sub alphas and betas came to bade us goodbye. My parents came and I gave them a hug. But as I hugged my father, Thane growled loudly at him and pulled me back into his arms.


    My father looked confused but he gave me a weak smile and they left. I scowled at Thane and walked away while he continued with the remaining guests.


    I retired to my bedroom and Damia helped me to prepare a bath. I removed my dress and washed the make up away, soaking in the tub until I was clean.


    As I stepped out of the bathroom in my towel, Thane came in. I turned towards the closet and wore one of his shirts.


    I put my hands through the sleeves and began to button up. His hands stopped mine and he helped me to button up the rest of the buttons.

    "My king, you sent for us abruptly. Is there a problem?" my papa asked.
