《Elemental Tear》 Chapter 1: The Prophecy The city of Lotardale buzzed with activity as the sun began its descent. Crowds filled the bustling streets, hurrying to their homes, and the rhythmic clip-clop of horse-drawn carriages echoed through the narrow alleys. Yet, an undercurrent of unease lingered in the air, casting a shadow over the city. In the heart of Lotardale, within a small, dimly lit room in the cathedral of the Church of Elements, a group of elders gathered around a massive wooden table. Ancient tomes and scrolls adorned the surface, capturing the attention of the esteemed members of the Church of Elements. The room exuded the scent of weathered leather and was illuminated by the flickering glow of countless candles. "The prophecy speaks of four children, and thus far, we have only found three, one in here and two in Azurdale," voiced one of the elders, a stern-looking man with a thick gray beard. "We must hasten our search and locate these children." A resonant voice filled the room, emanating from another elder with an imposing presence. "Calm yourselves, brethren. I have my people stationed in all three cities, ready to administer the orb exams. If the fourth child emerges, my people will bring the child and their family to us." The others nodded, acknowledging the gravity of their mission. They understood that the prophecy held immense significance, and their relentless pursuit of these children had spanned years. The Church of Elements believed that the destiny of the world hinged upon the powers harbored by these children. Meanwhile, in a quiet corner of Arindale, a young boy named Alex made his way home alone after school. Earlier that day, after class, all the students were required to gather in the school courtyard to place their hands upon a mysterious black orb. Though the orb remained unresponsive to everyone, Alex sensed an inexplicable heat radiating from his hands when he touched it, but maybe it was just his imagination. Upon arriving home, Alex discovered that his parents had not yet returned from work. As they served the Great Minister of Arindale directly, their duties often kept them occupied, leaving Alex to fend for himself. He ventured into the kitchen, preparing his solitary dinner. In his hands, he clutched his cherished grimoire, containing his favorite spell: Sparks. Even at such a young age, Alex had mastered its execution, much to the astonishment of his parents. With confidence, Alex opened the grimoire and directed his gaze towards the fireplace, stacked with dry wood. Focusing his energy, he extended his hand, and with a flourish, cast the spell. A cascade of sparks erupted from his hands, dancing through the air and igniting the wood. The warmth and gentle crackle of the fire accompanied Alex as he continued his solitary routine. Later that evening, while sitting alone in his room, engrossed in his homework, Alex found himself lost in thought. At around twelve years old, he possessed short, tousled black hair and inquisitive, deep brown eyes. Throughout his young life, Alex had always felt an innate sense of difference, a feeling of being set apart from his peers. Consequently, he struggled to connect with others his age, and the absence of close friendships weighed heavily on him. This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere. As he sat there on his bed, there was a sudden knock at the door. Alex''s heart raced as he got up to answer it, thinking it might be his parents returning home. When he opened the door, he found himself face to face with a woman he had seen before at school¡ªan official from the Church, conducting the orb examination. She was a tall, slender young woman with long blonde hair that flowed down her back in loose waves. Her piercing green eyes seemed to hold a sense of determination and strength, and her sharp features gave her an almost regal appearance. Despite her youth, she carried herself with the confidence and poise of a wise mage, and her presence commanded respect. Her attire was simple yet elegant, consisting of a long black cloak and a white tunic that accentuated her curves in all the right places. Her boots were sturdy and practical, designed for long journeys through rugged terrain. Overall, she exuded an aura of power and authority that Alex couldn''t help but be drawn to. "Hello, Alex," she said, her voice calm but firm. "My name is Olana. I work for the Church." Alex tensed at the mention of the Church but tried to keep his expression neutral. Olana continued, "I''ve been sent to find you. Today, during the orb examination, it reacted only when you touched it, meaning you may be one of the children mentioned in the prophecy." Alex''s heart raced as he tried to process this information. The woman''s eyes searched his face for a reaction. Feeling trapped, Alex decided to play along for now. "I don''t know what you''re talking about," he said, trying to keep his voice steady. "I''m just a normal boy." Olana raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure about that?" she asked, gesturing to the grimoire on the bookshelf. "I think you''re hiding something." Alex''s heart sank as he realized that this woman wasn''t going to leave. He knew that he couldn''t trust Olana, but he didn''t know what to do. He glanced around the room, looking for a way out. "Please," he said, his voice shaking slightly. "What do you want?" Alex felt a shiver run down his spine at the mention of the Church. He had heard stories about their ruthless pursuit of power, and he didn''t want to have anything to do with them. Olana''s expression softened. "I understand your fears, Alex, but I''m not here to harm you. I''m here to help you." Alex narrowed his eyes, suspicious. "How do I know I can trust you?" Olana sighed. "I know that trust isn''t easily given, especially to those who claim to work for the Church. But please, hear me out. You have a gift, Alex, a rare and powerful gift. And we can help you learn to control it." "Why me?" he asked. "And what powers?" Olana leaned in, her green eyes intense. "Because, Alex, you are one of the four. The ones spoken of in the prophecy the heir to the fire element." Alex''s heart skipped a beat. He had heard whispers of the prophecy, but he had never taken them seriously. But if what Olana was saying was true... "What does that mean?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. Olana straightened up, her expression serious. "It means that you have a destiny, Alex. A destiny that could change the course of history. But you can''t do it alone. You need the others." Alex felt a surge of fear and excitement. He had never imagined that he could be a part of something so important. But he still didn''t trust Olana, or the church. Chapter 2: Olanas Visit "I work for the church, and we received a prophecy about four children who would inherit these powers," Olana explained. "My job is to find them and bring them together." Alex''s mind raced with questions. "Wait, so there are others like me?" Olana nodded. "Yes, and I''ve already found one of them. His name is Max, and he''s my younger brother." As she said this, a young boy appeared behind her. He appeared to be around 12 years old, with short, blonde hair and bright blue eyes. Max greeted Alex with a friendly smile. "Hello, Alex. Nice to meet you." Alex, who was always shy around people his age, felt a sense of relief in Max''s presence. He didn''t feel the same sense of difference and unease he often experienced around others. Interrupting his thoughts, Olana said, "I was hoping I could meet with your parents and talk about this." Excitement and curiosity filled Alex''s mind as he agreed. Olana suggested they go to the law offices in the city of Arindale, where Alex''s parents worked, to speak with them. Alex agreed, and they set off. As they walked through the crowded streets of Arindale, Alex couldn''t help but feel a sense of unease. The Church had always made him uncomfortable, and he couldn''t shake the feeling that there was something more to this prophecy than Olana was letting on. Arriving at the law offices, Alex noticed the bustling activity within. Lawyers rushed back and forth, carrying stacks of documents and folders. Amidst the chaos, Alex guided Max and Olana to his parents'' offices. On the door, two names could be seen engraved: Sarah and David Stern. Alex made sure to introduce them to his parents. Olana explained that she worked for the Church and was conducting examinations throughout the country, looking for children who had inherited the powers of the elements, including Alex. She shared the details of the prophecy and how she had discovered her own brother''s powers. Alex''s parents listened intently as Olana spoke. They were skeptical of the Church''s intentions, but they couldn''t deny the organization''s power. They were also surprised to learn about their son''s powers and had many questions. "What guarantees do we have that the Church has good intentions? How can we be sure our son will be safe?" Olana took a deep breath, understanding their worries. "I cannot promise you absolute certainty, but I swear to protect Alex and Max with my own life. I have seen the potential in them, and I believe they can bring about positive change in the world." David, Alex''s father, shared his thoughts. "We want what''s best for our son. If we accompany him to Lotardale, will he have a chance for a normal life? Will he still receive an education?" Olana nodded earnestly. "The Church will provide you with a house and ensure that Alex receives education and training tailored to his abilities. It is important for him to understand and control his powers. We will do everything we can to give him a fulfilling life." After much discussion and reassurances, Alex''s parents made the decision to accompany them to Lotardale. They wanted to be there for their son and ensure his safety. Olana expressed her gratitude and emphasized that they were taking a brave and important step. While Olana spoke privately with Alex''s parents to address their questions and concerns, Alex and Max went to a nearby park to play. They ran around, laughing and letting their imaginations soar. The weight of the prophecy was momentarily forgotten as they enjoyed their carefree moments together. Later that evening, Olana and Max returned from the Church in Arindale, having sent a message to Lotardale, informing them that they had found the fourth heir. With the preparations for the journey underway, the group gathered around a table to discuss the details. Olana took out a map and spread it out before them. "Our journey to Lotardale will take us east through the Royal Road, passing through the dense Great Forest. It will be a challenging journey, but I can overcome any obstacles alone." David''s eyes widened as he studied the map. "Are there any dangers we should be aware of?" Olana nodded solemnly. "The Great Forest is home to Teras and animals like bears and wolves. We must remain calm and stick to the royal road. Don''t worry, I have been trained to handle such situations, and I will ensure your safety." Alex''s parents expressed their gratitude to Olana for her dedication and promised to support their son in this extraordinary journey. They understood that Alex''s destiny was intertwined with the prophecy and that they had an important role to play. As they prepared to leave for Lotardale, Alex felt a mix of emotions like anticipation, excitement, and a hint of apprehension. The unknown lay before them, and the journey promised both challenges and discoveries. Yet, deep down, Alex knew that they were embarking on an extraordinary adventure that would shape their lives forever. Chapter 3: The History of the Teras and the Four Heroes As they rode in the carriage on the royal road towards the east, Alex looked out the window, lost in thought. Olana noticed his distant expression and smiled, asking, "What are you daydreaming about?" Alex turned to Olana, feeling a bit shy. "It''s nothing, I just feel like anyone would have been a better pick than me to inherit this power..." Olana looked at Alex with a questioning face and asked, "Why do you say that? Are you a bad person?" Alex hurriedly responded, "No, it''s nothing like that. I just feel like I''m not as strong or smart as the others. I don''t know anything besides writing, reading, and casting sparks..." Olana found Alex''s self-doubt endearing and chuckled. "Well, then, would you like me to teach you about the world?" Alex''s face brightened as if he had found a treasure, and he eagerly expressed his desire to learn. Olana, seeing his enthusiasm, began her explanation about the history of the continent. She talked about how humans were once the dominant race, but after the appearance of the monsters known as teras, the human population gradually decreased until it reached only 20% of its previous numbers. Alex listened attentively, his curiosity piqued. Interrupting Olana, Alex couldn''t contain his curiosity any longer and asked, "What do these teras look like?" Olana''s expression turned serious as she described the monstrous creatures. "They come in all shapes and sizes. Some resemble giant bears made of ice, while others take the form of fire-wielding eagles. There are even teras that bear a twisted resemblance to humans, but with supernatural abilities. They are diverse, but they all share a ferocious hunger for destruction." Alex listened intently, feeling a chill run down his spine as he imagined the terrifying teras in his mind. Eager to know more, he asked, "How do people fight against them?" Olana replied, "The Church of the Elements is responsible for protecting us from the teras. They have trained soldiers and magicians like myself who use their powers to defend the cities and towns. Additionally, there are hunters who venture into the wilderness to track down teras and gather valuable resources." Fascinated by the resourcefulness of the people on the continent, Alex pressed on, "What kind of resources do they gather from the teras?" Olana smiled, delighted by Alex''s curiosity. "Some teras have valuable materials in their bodies that can be used for crafting weapons and tools. For example, ice shards or fire stones and cores. There are also rare herbs and plants that can only be found in areas where teras roam." Impressed by the ingenuity of the people, Alex wanted to know more about the heroes. "And what about the four heroes you mentioned earlier? What role did they play?" Olana''s eyes gleamed as she explained, "The four heroes appeared from the four corners of the continent, each possessing control over one of the four elements: Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. While the exact details are unknown, according to the sacred texts of the Church, these heroes united humanity and, with the aid of mages and soldiers, built the walls and forts that now protect us from the teras." Alex''s fascination grew, and he couldn''t help but ask, "Where are these heroes now? Are they still alive?" Olana''s tone turned somber as she responded, "The heroes have long passed from this world, but their legacy lives on. Each of them founded their own city¡ªLotardale, the city of Earth; Arindale, the city of Air; and to the north, next to the North Sea, Azurdale, the city of Water. With the establishment of these cities, their inhabitants began to venerate the heroes, leading to the formation of the Church of the Elements." Enjoying the story? Show your support by reading it on the official site. Curiosity burning within him, Alex probed further, "If there are cities of Water, Air, and Earth, where is the city of Fire?" Olana''s smile disappeared as she replied, "There isn''t much information available about the city of Fire. What is known for sure is that it was located south of the other cities, and its name was Govirdale. Popular legends suggest that the hero of Fire, driven by envy, sought more power and, in the end, failed and disappeared." Shock and sadness washed over Alex''s face. Olana, realizing his reaction, quickly tried to console him, saying, "It''s just a popular legend, Alex. We don''t know what truly happened to the hero of Fire." Olana smiled warmly, pleased to see Alex''s curiosity about the continent''s history. "Indeed, Alex, the Church of the Elements has been protecting us for generations, and their influence extends far beyond the walls of these cities," she said. Alex nodded, still deep in thought. "It''s amazing to think about how these heroes united the people and built the walls to protect them," he said, marveling at their accomplishments. Olana nodded in agreement. "Yes, it is truly remarkable. The four heroes were revered as demigods, and their stories continue to be told to this day. The Church of the Elements has been the driving force behind their veneration, and their teachings guide our way of life," she said. Listening intently, Alex found himself immersed in Olana''s words, captivated by the rich history and lore of the continent. Olana smiled. "The Church is a vital part of our society, and their work is essential to our survival," she emphasized. As the carriage rolled onward towards Lotardale, the journey became an opportunity for Alex to expand his knowledge, and Olana gladly shared more stories and details about the continent''s history. Alex''s parents and Max joined in the conversations, offering their perspectives and asking questions that deepened their understanding of the world they were entering. The landscape changed as they ventured deeper into the Great Forest, and Olana pointed out various landmarks and shared anecdotes about her previous encounters with teras in the area. Her tales were both thrilling and cautionary, reminding them of the challenges they might face. As the daylight began to fade, Olana announced, "We have finally arrived." Alex, engrossed in a card game with Max, glanced out the window, only to be greeted by a sea of darkness interspersed with towering trees. Frustrated by his inability to locate the renowned Blackwood Stronghold, he voiced his concern, "I can''t see it. Where is it?" Max grinned mischievously and replied, "You see that inky blackness nestled amidst the trees? It''s not the shroud of night; it''s actually the stronghold itself. The entire structure is cloaked in a coat of deep black, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the darkness and evade the notice of formidable teras." After a moment of concerted searching, Alex''s eyes widened as he finally caught a glimpse of the hidden fortress. Overwhelmed by its stealth and grandeur, a sense of awe washed over him. As they reached the entrance, a sturdy metal gate swung open, and Olana engaged in a brief conversation with the soldier stationed there. The carriage was granted access, and they made their way into the stronghold. After a short while, a soldier escorted them to their assigned rooms. They were generously provided with three separate rooms, allowing each of them their own space to settle in. Olana claimed one room, while Alex''s parents took another. Excitement filled Alex''s heart as he realized that he would be sharing a room with Max. Deep down, he had always felt a sense of loneliness, but with Max by his side, that feeling seemed to fade away. Entering the room, Max turned to Alex and asked with a friendly smile, "Do you have a preference for the bunk bed?" Alex, feeling a genuine sense of trust, replied, "I don''t know. I''ve never slept on a bunk bed before, so you can choose." Max''s eyes lit up, and he cheerfully declared, "Then I''ll take the top bunk!" Alex nodded in agreement, appreciating Max''s enthusiasm. He then headed to the bathroom to prepare for bed, feeling a mix of nerves and anticipation for the days ahead. As they settled into their respective bunks, surrounded by the comforting silence of the room, Max broke the silence. "Alex, are you still awake?" he asked softly. Alex, looking up, replied, "Yes, why?" Max hesitated for a moment before gently inquiring, "Are you feeling nervous?" Alex took a moment to reflect before saying. "Yes, I am. But even though I don''t know what awaits us, I have a strong feeling that everything will turn out alright. I have my parents by my side, and you and Olana will be there too. So, I think I''ll be fine," he confided, his voice filled with a mix of uncertainty and determination. Listening intently, Max closed his eyes and said. "I guess we''ll be fine, then," he replied, a hint of reassurance in his voice. With those comforting words, they both allowed themselves to succumb to sleep, their minds filled with dreams of the adventures and challenges that awaited them in the days to come. Chapter 4: A New Friend in Lotardale The next morning, Alex woke up feeling groggy and disoriented. As he clumsily rose from the bed, he accidentally bumped his head against the top bunk. Max, who was already awake, couldn''t help but laugh at the comical mishap. "That''s why you always choose the top bunk," he teased. Rubbing his head and still in the process of waking up, Alex replied with a hint of a smile, "Lesson learned." Max approached Alex, excitement evident in his eyes. "Come on, Alex! My sister said if we leave now, we can still reach Lotardale by daytime. Let''s go so I can show you around!" Alex''s imagination ran wild with the possibilities, and he eagerly agreed. He quickly got ready, realizing the opportunity to explore Lotardale during daylight hours was too good to pass up. Stepping outside the building where the rooms were located, Alex was awe-struck by the sheer size of Blackwood Stronghold. The stronghold, shrouded in an all-black exterior, stood out amidst the surrounding forest. Its imposing presence commanded attention and conveyed a sense of strength and protection. After taking a moment to admire the unique architecture, Alex climbed back into the carriage. Excitement bubbled within him as he eagerly anticipated the adventures that awaited him in Lotardale. A considerable amount of time passed, and Alex noticed that the density of the forest wasn''t diminishing. Doubts started to creep into his mind, and he began to think they might not reach Lotardale by daytime. Just as his concern grew, Max''s voice broke through the silence, "Finally, we have arrived, Alex! Welcome to Lotardale, the city of Earth." To everyone''s surprise, it was Sarah, Alex''s mother, who spoke up, questioning their surroundings. "But aren''t we still in the forest?" she asked, her confusion evident. Olana turned to Sarah and reassured her, saying, "No, Lotardale is actually surrounded by a forest. It''s a beautiful, lush green that adds to the city''s charm." As they entered the bustling green city of Lotardale, Alex''s eyes widened with wonder. He had never seen so many people gathered in one place, all busy with their daily routines. The vibrant market they passed was filled with vendors selling fresh produce, meats, and various other goods. The streets were teeming with people going about their business, while magicians entertained the gathered crowds with their tricks. In the streets, priests of the Church of the Elements preached about the continent''s history and the heroes who had saved humanity from the teras. Alex was captivated by the colorful buildings and the vibrant atmosphere of the city. As they reached the grand cathedral of the Church of the Elements, Alex''s breath was taken away by its grandeur. The cathedral, an awe-inspiring structure, towered over Lotardale. Its exterior was made of gleaming white marble, radiating an aura of purity and grandeur. With its tall stature, adorned with numerous pointed arches and towering spires, the cathedral commanded attention. The entrance was framed by an intricately carved stone archway depicting symbols of the elements flames, waves, clouds, and vines. Above the entrance, a magnificent rose window made of stained glass depicted the four heroes, each holding hands with their respective elements swirling around them. On either side of the entrance, two smaller spires reached towards the sky. Each spire was crowned with a statue of one of the four heroes. The hero of fire was depicted amidst swirling flames, the hero of water stood with waves at her feet, the hero of air had his hair caught in a gust of wind, and the hero of earth had roots and vines entwined around her feet. Approaching the cathedral, the resonant sound of church bells filled the air, adding to the grandeur and reverence that surrounded this sacred place. Max looked at Alex with contagious excitement, eager to share the wonders of the city of Earth. "Hey, Alex, do you want to see the cathedral? It''s truly amazing!" Max exclaimed. Alex turned to his parents, seeking their approval. His mother nodded and smiled, saying, "Of course, dear." Max took the lead as they walked towards the grand cathedral. As they approached, Alex''s eyes widened in awe. "Wow, it''s even bigger than I imagined!" Max chuckled. "I know, right? It''s one of the most significant buildings in Lotardale." Guided by Max, Alex explored the grand gardens surrounding the cathedral, marveling at the intricate sculptures and the soothing sounds of nearby water features. Max shared his own story of discovering his powers and how his sister Olana had been instrumental in helping him control them. "I had no idea I had powers until Olana told me," Max said. "My only previous experience with magic was casting simple spells like sparks." Max sympathetically nodded as Alex expressed his understanding. "It must be challenging to figure it all out on your own. I''m fortunate to have Olana by my side. She''s always been there for me." As they continued their leisurely stroll, Alex''s curiosity led him to ask about Max''s family. "What do your parents do?" he inquired. Max beamed with pride. "My dad is a blacksmith, and my mom is a healer. They excel at what they do." Impressed, Alex responded, "Wow, that''s amazing. As for my parents, as you saw, they are lawyers who work for the Grand Minister of Arindale." Max''s eyes widened with curiosity. "You must know a lot about the government and how it works," he exclaimed. Alex shrugged. "I suppose so. Sometimes, it can be quite dull, though." As they strolled through the gardens, Alex couldn''t help but admire the exquisite sculptures and the peaceful ambiance created by the water features. He turned to Max and commented, "You''re so lucky to have such a cool sister. I wish I had a sister like her." Max smiled but then glanced down at his feet. In a quieter tone, he revealed, "Actually, I''m adopted. Olana isn''t my biological sister." Alex felt a pang of guilt for his earlier comment, but Max quickly reassured him. "It''s okay," he said. "I love Olana just the same, and it doesn''t matter that we''re not related by blood. We''re still family." Surprised by Max''s revelation, Alex was also touched by his words. He realized that family wasn''t solely defined by blood ties but also by the love and support people offered one another. "That''s really cool," he said, smiling. "I''m glad you have such a great family, Max." Max grinned back at him, and they continued exploring the gardens, playing, and deepening their newfound friendship. As they strolled, they noticed a group of children engaged in a game of catch with a magical ball. Alex had never seen anything quite like it before, igniting his curiosity. "Hey, Max, what kind of ball is that?" Alex asked, pointing towards the children. Max looked over and chuckled. "Oh, that''s a Ryzet Ball. It''s enchanted with magic, so it never stops bouncing. It''s a lot of fun to play with, but you have to be careful not to let it get away from you." Alex was fascinated. "Let''s go join in!" Max exclaimed, grabbing Alex''s hand. As they hurried over to join the group of children, Alex felt a twinge of nervousness. He had always been shy around new people. However, Max''s infectious enthusiasm eased his worries, and soon they were all playing together, laughing and having a great time. After a while, they took a break and settled down on a nearby bench. Max turned to Alex and complimented him, saying, "You know, you''re pretty good at this!" A surge of pride welled up within Alex at Max''s kind words. "Thanks," he replied. "I''ve never played with a ball like this before, but it''s really fun." Max nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it''s one of my favorite games to play. My dad taught me how when I was little." As they sat and chatted, Alex felt a sense of camaraderie and friendship blossoming between them. Although they had only just met, he already felt a deep trust and a willingness to share his thoughts and feelings with Max. For the first time in a long while, Alex felt like he truly belonged somewhere, and he cherished this newfound connection. Chapter 5: The Secret Unveiled While Alex and Max were immersed in their exploration of the grand cathedral, Olana seized the opportunity to have a private conversation with Alex''s parents. She had a few pressing questions about Alex and wanted to address her lingering doubts. Approaching Sarah and David, Olana spoke with a gentle tone, "Sarah, David, may I have a moment of your time?" Sarah nodded, her expression filled with curiosity. "Of course, Olana. What''s on your mind?" Olana took a deep breath, trying to convey a sense of understanding. "I have some questions regarding Alex. I hope you can trust me enough to share the truth with me." David, sensing the importance of the conversation, nodded solemnly. "Go ahead, Olana. We''ll do our best to answer." Olana''s gaze shifted between the two, her voice steady but compassionate. "Is Alex adopted?" Sarah and David exchanged a startled glance, the revelation catching them off guard. Sarah''s eyes welled up with tears, and David''s face registered a mix of surprise and concern. David managed to gather his thoughts and responded, "How did you find out about that?" Olana''s tone turned reassuring as she explained, "As a member of the church, I hold knowledge about the lineage and powers of elemental heirs. It''s a well-kept secret, known only to a select few. I made a promise to protect this secret, ensuring that Alex remains unaware of his true origins."Sarah said, "I''m sorry, Olana. We just wanted to protect him." David felt it was best to explain what had happened 12 years ago when they found Alex. He began, "So, 12 years ago, Sarah and I were trying to have a baby, but for some reason, it wasn''t working out. We were going through a difficult time, and we threw ourselves into our work. One night, as we were leaving work to go home, we heard a baby crying. It was pouring rain, but for some reason, we felt compelled to find the source of the cry. We discovered a baby, soaked and crying in the mud, in the back alley near our house. The first thing we did was pick him up and take him to the nearest clinic to ensure he was okay." Olana listened intently, absorbing the details of their extraordinary encounter. David continued, "While we were at the clinic, talking to the healer, they asked if we were the parents. Given the circumstances and the fear that someone might have abandoned the baby, we couldn''t bear the thought of that happening again. We were unsure if we would ever find his biological parents, and even if we did, we had doubts about their intentions. After considering everything, and based on my experiences as a lawyer in Arindale, I made the decision to claim him as our own. We named him Alex Stern. It may sound selfish, but Alex truly saved our lives, and every day with him has been filled with happiness. However, I''ve always suspected that he is special. He excels in everything he does, and when he was only 7, he was able to cast sparks on his third attempt. I know that''s not a typical talent for a child his age. I''m sorry, Olana, for keeping this from you." Sarah, wiping away tears, gathered her composure and added, "We never wanted Alex to feel any different or burdened by the truth. We''ve loved him unconditionally as our own child." Olana nodded, her expression filled with empathy and understanding. "I can see the depth of your love and care for Alex. Maintaining the secrecy surrounding his adoption is crucial as he embarks on his journey of self-discovery. Rest assured, I will protect this secret and offer my unwavering support." Sarah''s voice trembled with emotion as she expressed her gratitude. "Thank you, Olana. We appreciate your understanding and will do whatever it takes to keep Alex safe and happy." David, his voice filled with determination, added, "We are grateful for your guidance, Olana. Alex''s well-being is our top priority." Olana offered a reassuring smile. "I believe in your love and dedication to Alex. Together, we can navigate this journey and assist him. Because of your honesty, I feel compelled to share something I shouldn''t." Olana glanced around to ensure no one else was listening before continuing. "Alex is not a typical case. While the church values all elemental heirs, there is some unease surrounding the fire hero due to the lack of historical records and the abundance of rumors. Even within the church, we must exercise caution in whom we trust to protect Alex. From what I have observed, he is a compassionate child who has received an excellent upbringing, and he is always willing to help others. However, we must never forget that the power Alex has inherited is not ordinary. It has the potential to evolve into something dangerous, and many individuals would prefer to see the other three heirs succeed rather than Alex. Please, never forget that." David looked at Olana, his face filled with a mix of anticipation and concern. "But what happens now? What do we need to do?" Olana reassured them, her voice calm and reassuring. "The church will provide a house for you and Alex. He will also attend the Elemental Institute of Lotardale (EIL), where young magicians learn to control and harness their powers. However, all of this will happen after the grand ceremony, which is scheduled to take place upon the arrival of the other two children in Lotardale." Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit. Sarah, relieved to hear that they could stay with Alex, asked, "And what about us? How will we be involved?" Olana smiled warmly. "You will be able to stay with Alex and continue providing him with the love and support he needs. The church will take care of all the necessary arrangements and ensure that you have everything you require." David expressed his gratitude, saying, "Thank you, Olana. We truly appreciate your help and guidance." Olana nodded, her eyes filled with genuine care. "It''s my pleasure to assist you and be a part of Alex''s journey. Now, let''s continue the tour. I''ll show you more of the cathedral and provide further explanations." The group entered the Elemental Cathedral of Lotardale and were immediately captivated by its magnificence. The grand foyer welcomed them with its soaring ceilings and vibrant stained-glass windows, casting a warm and colorful glow. Adorning the walls were captivating murals depicting the four elements: earth, air, water, and fire. In the center of the cathedral stood a towering altar crafted from exquisite white marble, surrounded by statues representing the four elemental deities. Flanking the altar were two ornate staircases, leading up to a balcony where the choir performed during ceremonies. To the left side of the cathedral, they discovered small chapels dedicated to each elemental deity. Ornate altars adorned with statues and icons paid homage to the respective deities. On the right side, a series of rooms catered to the needs of the clergy, including living quarters, a library, and a serene meditation chamber. Stained-glass domes dotted the cathedral''s interior, each portraying a different scene from the rich history of magic in Lotardale. One dome, in particular, depicted a legendary battle between the four elemental deities and an ancient evil, a story passed down through generations. Olana expertly guided the tour, drawing their attention to intricate details and sharing the historical significance of each section. Alex''s parents marveled at the grandeur and beauty surrounding them, feeling a sense of awe and reverence. As they exited the cathedral, a group of church officials awaited them outside. These officials donned long robes adorned with the emblem of the church, signifying their authority and role. "Welcome, Mr. and Mrs. Stern," one of the officials greeted them warmly. "We are here to escort you to your new home." David and Sarah exchanged glances, their hearts filled with a mix of excitement and anticipation for the journey that lay ahead. With gratitude, they followed the officials, ready to embrace the next chapter of their lives in the enchanting world of Lotardale. The quaint, cozy cottage nestled in a serene corner of the city welcomed Alex''s parents with open arms. Its stone exterior, thatched roof, and charming front garden exuded a sense of warmth and tranquility. David and Sarah were astonished by the thoughtful gesture of the church in providing them with such a delightful home. It was a significant relief to have a place of their own in a new town, even though they had yet to make connections. As they crossed the threshold, a warm and inviting living room greeted them, complete with a crackling fireplace and plush sofas. Tapestries adorned the walls, illustrating captivating scenes from Lotardale''s rich history, while a sturdy wooden table stood proudly in the center of the room. The atmosphere instantly made Alex''s parents feel at ease and embraced. The kitchen, though modest in size, proved to be functional and well-equipped. A wooden table and chairs beckoned family gatherings, and a reliable stove awaited culinary creations. Sarah''s eyes sparkled with excitement as she took in the quaint decor, already imagining the delicious meals she would prepare for her loved ones. Cooking had always been her passion, and having a new kitchen to explore filled her with joy. The bathroom, though compact, held all the necessary amenities, including a comforting bathtub for unwinding after eventful days of discovery. David and Sarah were grateful for the simple yet adequate bathroom, appreciating it as a luxury they had not previously experienced. The bedrooms, adorned with soft beds, wooden dressers, and windows inviting ample natural light, embraced simplicity and comfort. Alex''s parents were elated at the prospect of a peaceful night''s sleep in their new abode, cherishing the feeling of security it provided. Overall, the cottage emanated a charm that embraced them like a true home. Alex eagerly anticipated starting their new life in Lotardale, making cherished memories in their cozy haven. Seeing the joy on his parents'' faces, he felt a surge of happiness, hopeful that he would find companionship and forge lasting friendships in their new city. As they settled into their new home, David and Sarah engaged in heartfelt conversations about their aspirations for the future. Their primary concern was Alex''s safety and well-being, but they also yearned to immerse themselves in the city''s culture and connect with its residents. Olana had graciously offered to be their guide. Gathered around the dinner table that evening, Alex''s mom gazed at him with a radiant smile. "This marks a new chapter for us, Alex," she declared. "We have a new home, a new city. I can''t wait to see what the future holds for our family." Returning her smile, Alex felt a surge of gratitude and excitement for the adventures that lay ahead. He knew that his life was about to undergo a transformation beyond his wildest imagination. With an open heart and a spirit of anticipation, he embraced the forthcoming journey, ready to embrace the opportunities and forge his path in this enchanting new world. Chapter 6: The Ceremony After what felt like an eternity, the eagerly anticipated day arrived. The two remaining children who possessed the elemental powers had finally arrived in Lotardale. The church bustled with preparations for the grand ceremony that would formally welcome the heirs of the four ancient heroes. Throughout the two weeks leading up to the ceremony, Alex and Max forged an unbreakable bond. They spent their days exploring the enchanting streets of Lotardale, embarking on exciting adventures, and strengthening their friendship. Alex''s heart overflowed with joy, for he had spent much of his time in his previous town feeling alone. But now, he had a companion, a kindred spirit to share his joys and discoveries. And when he returned home, his family embraced him with open arms, filling his heart with a warmth he had never experienced before. It felt as if he were living in a dream, a dream he never wanted to wake up from. As the day of the ceremony approached, Lotardale buzzed with excitement. The streets were adorned with colorful banners, and the townsfolk eagerly anticipated the arrival of the esteemed guests. The entire city seemed to come alive, their collective energy radiating with anticipation and hope. On the day of the ceremony, Alex''s parents accompanied him to a local dress shop, where Sarah and Max''s mother joined them to choose their attire. The women carefully selected elegant dresses for Sarah and Max''s mother, while Alex and Max tried on their new suits. They marveled at how the clothes made them feel special and ready for the momentous occasion that awaited them. As they prepared for the ceremony, Alex''s parents urged him to hurry up so they wouldn''t arrive late. The cathedral, where the ceremony was to take place, was a short 10-minute carriage ride away, and they didn''t want to miss a moment of the event. Alex apologized and quickly dressed up, feeling a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Finally, after a swift carriage ride, the Stern family arrived at the grand Cathedral. The imposing structure stood tall, its intricate architecture an awe-inspiring sight. Olana, Max, and their parents awaited their arrival with smiles of anticipation. As Alex stepped out of the carriage, he couldn''t help but feel a surge of nervous energy. The grandeur of the Cathedral and the significance of the ceremony weighed upon him. However, the warm presence of his family and the sight of Max''s friendly face filled him with a newfound confidence. As Alex and his family entered the grand Cathedral, their eyes widened in awe at the elaborate decorations adorning the sacred space. The air was filled with an atmosphere of anticipation, as if the very walls of the Cathedral were buzzing with excitement. The Cathedral had been transformed into a majestic setting for the special ceremony. Intricate tapestries depicting scenes from Lotardale''s history adorned the walls, their vibrant colors capturing the essence of the ancient heroes and their elemental powers. Chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, casting a soft and warm glow over the gathering. The left hall of the Cathedral had been prepared to accommodate the distinguished guests. A stage stood at the front of the hall, serving as the focal point of the ceremony. Circular tables were arranged in front of the stage, providing seating for the attendees. Each table was beautifully set, with fine tablecloths and elegant tableware. As Alex and his family made their way to their designated table, they noticed the presence of prominent figures from the three cities. The great Ministers, the highest representatives of the Elemental Church, and nobles from various cities had come together to witness and celebrate this momentous occasion. Alex''s family found their place at one of the four circular tables positioned directly in front of the stage. They took their seats, grateful for the opportunity to be part of such an esteemed gathering. The table was adorned with floral centerpieces, and the soft glow of candlelight created an ambiance of warmth and grandeur. Just a few steps away, Max''s family occupied the next table, their eyes meeting Alex''s with a shared sense of excitement and anticipation. The bond between Alex and Max had grown stronger in the past weeks. As the hall filled with distinguished guests, the murmurs of conversation filled the air, blending harmoniously with the gentle music playing in the background. Alex''s family couldn''t help but feel a mixture of awe and humility as they realized the magnitude of the event they were about to witness. As Alex scanned the tables, his eyes fell upon the first table beside Max''s, where a family sat. It consisted of a distinguished couple who exuded an air of nobility, accompanied by a young girl who appeared to be around 12 or 13 years old. Samantha, as Alex later learned, possessed a radiant beauty with her long, curly blonde hair cascading down her shoulders. Her parents, Lord and Lady Williams, seemed to command respect and admiration. His gaze then shifted to the end table, where another girl, about his age, was seated with a well-to-do couple. Emily caught his attention with her brunette hair and striking green eyes. The aura of wealth seemed to emanate from her parents, Sir and Lady Parker. Alex wondered what unique powers these two girls possessed, knowing that they, along with Max and himself, were the chosen heirs of the ancient heroes. As Alex''s observations came to an end, his attention was drawn to the stage, where an elderly man dressed in pristine white garments stood. It was the Pope of the Elemental Church, the spiritual leader, who had the honor of presiding over the ceremony. With a commanding presence, he welcomed everyone who had gathered for this auspicious occasion, expressing his gratitude for their presence and emphasizing the significance of the event. The Pope then announced that before the ceremony could commence, it would be appropriate for everyone to enjoy a meal together. As his words resonated through the hall, approximately 100 staff members entered, each carrying trays filled with delectable-looking dishes. The air was filled with the tantalizing aroma of the food, making everyone''s mouths water in anticipation. Stolen novel; please report. Following the Pope''s instructions, the attendees moved to their respective tables, settling down to enjoy the feast. Soft, melodic music played in the background, creating an enchanting atmosphere that complemented the delightful dining experience. Alex and his family joined in the conversation and indulged in the mouthwatering dishes served before them. Taking a moment to savor the flavors, Alex looked at his parents and couldn''t help but express his satisfaction. "The food is delicious," he remarked, a sparkle of delight in his eyes. His parents nodded in agreement, their faces filled with contentment. The joy of the occasion was not only in the grandeur of the ceremony but also in the simple pleasures of sharing a meal with loved ones and new acquaintances. After the dinner concluded, the atmosphere in the hall shifted as the Pope returned to the stage for his speech. Alex''s heart raced with anticipation, hoping that this would be the moment where he would receive the recognition and applause he had dreamed of. But as the Pope began to speak, his words carried a different tone, one that would leave a lasting scar on Alex''s spirit. Pope: "Ladies and gentlemen, today is a special day for all of us. Many years ago, humanity teetered on the brink of extinction, threatened by monstrous creatures born of evil magic. In our darkest hour, four heroes emerged to save us all. They built the great walls that safeguard our cities, and today, we are privileged to witness the emergence of their heirs." Alex, Max, Samantha, and Emily stepped forward, their eyes shining with a mix of excitement and nervousness. As the Pope presented each of them with a medal, symbolizing their elemental powers and the weight of their responsibility, the applause erupted throughout the hall. But as Alex received his medal, the response was noticeably subdued, a mere ripple of polite claps. The weight of disappointment settled upon Alex, an invisible burden that grew heavier with each passing moment. He could feel the eyes of the audience upon him, their expectations seemingly diminished. It was as if the light that had shone brightly within him had been overshadowed by the brilliance of the other heirs. The Pope''s speech continued, praising the children as the hope for humanity and promising their triumphant victory over the monsters. The cheers and applause swelled, filling the hall with excitement and hope. Yet, amidst the jubilation, Alex couldn''t shake off the feeling of being overlooked, of not being seen as equal to the others. As the ceremony concluded, the attendees returned to their tables, mingling and congratulating the heirs and their families. But to Alex''s dismay, no one approached their table, except for the great minister of Arindale, who felt obligated to acknowledge their presence, and an elderly high-born lady. It was a stark contrast to the attention showered upon the other families. Alex''s heart sank, and his spirit felt scarred by the undeniable sense of exclusion. The realization that he was perceived as lesser, unworthy of the same recognition as the others, left him questioning his own worth and place among the chosen heirs. The joy that had filled his heart earlier in the day now seemed distant and faint, replaced by a sense of isolation and despair. Seeing the pain etched upon their child''s face, Alex''s parents exchanged a glance of shared concern. They felt the weight of their own disappointment, knowing that their beloved child deserved better than this. Unable to bear the injustice any longer, they made the difficult decision to leave the ceremony early, seeking solace and comfort away from the prying eyes and indifferent gazes. As they walked out of the grand hall, the echoes of applause faded into the distance. The scars left by this moment would linger, reminding Alex of the harsh reality that not all dreams are met with equal recognition, and that sometimes, the world can be a cruel and unforgiving place. As they entered the carriage, Alex couldn''t help but notice the whirlwind of attention surrounding Max and Olana. Nobles and church officials clamored for their presence, leaving no room for a goodbye. As the carriage began to move, Alex stared out the window, aching with a sense of being left out and forgotten. Inside the carriage, David and Sarah sensed their child''s anguish and attempted to offer comfort. "It''s not your fault, son," David said softly. "It''s ours. Samantha''s parents hold great influence as nobles, Olana is hailed as a prodigy in the church, and Emily''s parents are renowned doctors on the Continent." Alex gazed at his parents, realizing that his own disappointment was burdening them. He managed a bittersweet smile and replied, "Don''t worry, Mom and Dad. I didn''t want to stay there anyway. That ceremony was as dull as a rainy day." His parents chuckled, embracing him tightly. However, their laughter was short-lived, as the carriage suddenly came to a jolting halt. Concern creased David''s brow as he called out to the driver, but no response came. Instinct tingled within him, urging him to investigate. He stepped out of the carriage, his eyes darting to the shadows where movement stirred. Something was amiss. A surge of adrenaline pulsed through Alex''s veins as his mother and he hurriedly exited the carriage. They began hastening towards the safety of the cathedral, the urgency in their steps escalating. Then, an eerie noise pierced the air, sending shivers down their spines. Without hesitation, they broke into a sprint, their hearts pounding in sync with their pounding footsteps. But in the chaos and haste, tragedy struck. Alex''s mother stumbled and fell, her long dress entangling her legs. Panic surged within David, who shouted to Alex, "Keep running! I''ll go back and help her!" Alex fought against his instincts, torn between loyalty and self-preservation. With a heavy heart, he continued sprinting towards the cathedral, hoping against hope that his father would catch up. Yet, fate had other plans. A tremendous force thrust Alex forward, propelling him several meters away. Turning his gaze back, horror gripped his soul as he beheld a towering wolf-like creature composed of gnarled branches and twisted wood. It loomed over his parents, eyes filled with an unholy hunger. Fear coursed through Alex''s veins, but determination burned in his heart. David and Sarah, with resilience in their veins, pushed themselves to their feet and attempted to flee. But before they could escape, the monstrous creature raised its paw and brought it crashing down upon the ground. Sharp branches erupted from the earth, impaling Alex''s beloved parents with a sickening finality. Desperation surged through Alex as he sprinted towards his fallen parents, desperately reaching out in a futile attempt to save them. But time slipped through his fingers like sand in an hourglass. His mother coughed up blood, her voice feeble yet filled with love. "Despite not being my true son, you will always be." she whispered before her eyes closed, her life extinguished. Overwhelmed by grief and the weight of this merciless tragedy, Alex felt an intense pounding in his temples. The world around him blurred, the ground beneath his feet transforming into molten lava. Heat suffused his lungs, searing his throat and making each breath a struggle. In the throes of despair, Alex''s body succumbed to the overwhelming pain and anguish, his consciousness fading away as darkness claimed him collapsing and losing consciousness, he looked at his hands and saw them filled with ashes, as if they had ignited. Chapter 7: Waking Up "Alex, this can''t go on... you need to wake up," his mother said as he lay with his head in her lap, watching the sunset on the grass. "I know this is all a dream, but let me stay a little longer," Alex replied, gazing at the horizon where a man was walking towards him. But before he could get a better look, the scenery around him changed, and he found himself sitting at the dining table with his parents, enjoying a meal. "Alex, you have to go and live your life. We''ll be here waiting for you when you come back, and you can tell us all about your adventures," his mother said, smiling at him. Alex looked down at his plate; it was his favorite meal his mother used to make him. He lifted his head and pleaded, "Please don''t make me go just yet, just a little longer..." With a reassuring smile, his mother replied, "You have to go, Alex." Feeling agitated by his situation, Alex slammed his hands on the table and shouted, "But why do I need to go? Is it because I''m not your biological son?!" His mother calmly replied, "Despite not being my biological son, you will always be." Overwhelmed and bewildered, Alex pounded the table with his fists and shouted, "But what does that mean?!" Before he could get an answer, a hooded man appeared behind Alex''s parents and with a very characteristic voice shouted, "Wake up now!!" At that very moment, Alex opened his eyes. Unauthorized usage: this narrative is on Amazon without the author''s consent. Report any sightings. All the lights in the room were off. Alex could see the moonlight piercing through the blinds on the right side of his bed. Alex tried to get out of bed, and after a few attempts, he managed to stand up. The moment he put both feet down, he fell. He managed to get up, supporting his weight on the bed frame. As he got closer to the hallway, the door suddenly opened by itself. A nurse walked in and saw Alex standing; she fell back, scared. She looked at the bed and saw that the patient had finally woken up. The nurse apologized for her reaction, told Alex to sit on the bed, and said she was going to call a doctor to see how he was. After a brief moment, a beautiful woman entered the room. "Hello Alex, my name is Dr. Parker. How are you feeling?" Alex, still a little dizzy, replied, "Fine, I guess..." The doctor continued to examine him to see if he was okay. After the evaluation, she looked at Alex and said, "You''re a rare case. You were in a coma for a whole month, and when you woke up, you managed to walk." Despite feeling dizzy, Alex managed to remember where he knew this woman from. She was Joan Parker, the mother of Emily Parker, the heir to the elemental power of water. Before he could say anything else, Joan gave him an injection and said, "Sleep and rest. We''ll talk tomorrow morning." Alex lay down and fell asleep. It was early morning when he woke up. The noise of someone entering the room woke him up, and when he opened his eyes, he saw Olana with a bouquet of red flowers. Seeing that Alex had woken up, Olana went to Alex''s bedside and said, "Good morning, Alex! How are you feeling?" Alex sat up on the bed and replied, "I''m fine, don''t worry. How is Max doing?" "He''s doing fine. He''s getting ready for the start of classes at EIL. Classes will start in a week." Alex looked at the ceiling and closed his eyes, mentally preparing himself. During the week, Alex had his regular visitor Olana show up every morning by his bedside when he woke up and Dr. Parker twice a day on regular check-ups. Alex noticed that his friend Max hadn''t visited nor did he send a letter to check on his well-being. He did, however, receive two letters while he was in a coma from the Great Minister of Arindale, for whom Alex''s parents worked, and a nameless elderly high-born woman expressing their condolences for the passing of his parents. Chapter 8: The Board Meeting The Headmaster''s office at EIL was a magnificent chamber adorned with plush armchairs, towering bookshelves, and ornate tapestries depicting scenes of legendary battles. The long, oval table at the center was surrounded by board members, each exuding their own air of importance and power. Sitting among them was Klaus, a tall, skinny man with a piercing gaze and a high-ranking position in the church. He broke the silence, saying, "Another year, and a special one at that." The other board members nodded in agreement, waiting for Klaus to continue. "Now, talking about the 4 heirs," Klaus continued, "what wonderful potential they have. I heard rumors saying that both girls have quite a talent for arcane magic!" Miss White, an abnormally strong woman, raised an eyebrow. "Klaus, let''s not forget about Max Grace. His sister is the youngest church official in history, and with his talent, he may even beat her record." As the discussion continued, Arnold Frey sat quietly, observing the group with his piercing blue eyes over the rim of his half-moon spectacles. His long, silver beard rested on his chest, and his flowing robes were adorned with intricate celestial symbols, emphasizing his status as one of the Grandmaster-rank mages and the headmaster of EIL. Stolen story; please report. Finally, he cleared his throat and spoke, his voice deep and commanding, yet tinged with kindness. "May I ask you something?" All eyes turned to him, and the room fell silent. "Are we here to compete with each other, or to foster the potential of our students?" he asked. "Let us remember that they are our legacy, and it is our duty to guide them towards greatness, not to pit them against each other." Arnold continued, "Now tell me, what do you know about the other one, Alex Stern?" "There isn¡¯t a lot to say about him, Headmaster," Klaus responded respectfully. Everyone at the table nodded in agreement. Arnold looked around the room with a serious expression and said, "I know your opinions on the hero of fire, but in my school, every student is the same to my eyes." Suddenly, the pressure in the room skyrocketed, and everyone looked down in fear. Arnold sighed and said, "Don¡¯t take me for a fool. A mediocre 12-year-old can''t kill a full-grown Tempest Tera." Looking at their faces, none of them looked like they wanted to talk about it. Arnold sighed again, releasing the pressure, and thought to himself, "I guess I will have to wait to see Alex Stern''s rank." Chapter 9: A Monster When the first day at the EIL came, Alex rushed towards the EIL, he couldn''t help but marvel at the colossal building before him. The school was a grand structure made of white marble, with towering spires and elegant arches. The front entrance was a massive set of double doors, each intricately carved with arcane symbols and surrounded by statues of legendary mages and warriors. Once he entered the building, Alex found himself in a massive lobby, with a high ceiling and grand chandeliers hanging from above. To his left was a wide staircase leading up to the upper floors, and to his right was a large bulletin board displaying various notices and announcements and missions, alongside a list of criminals with their bounties. As he walked further into the school, Alex saw classrooms and lecture halls lining the hallways, each with their own unique atmosphere and equipment. The school was a bustling hub of activity, with students and teachers alike hurrying to and fro, immersed in their studies and research. EIL was a school that offered a wide range of disciplines to its students. From arcane magic to potions, sword arts to history, teras anatomy to scroll writing, healing magic to conjuring magic, and much more. The school was designed to cater to the needs of all kinds of students, from those interested in the more practical aspects of magic to those seeking a more academic approach. As a first-year student at EIL, Alex quickly learned about the school''s uniform system. First-years wore white, second-years wore blue, and third-years wore green. This was strictly enforced and helped students identify their level. Alex was thrilled to be attending such a grand institution, with a rich history of producing some of the world''s most powerful mages. As he walked through the halls, he felt a sense of excitement for the journey that lay ahead. But his excitement was short-lived, as he was quickly stopped by a green-uniformed student who belonged to the student council. The student indicated for Alex to follow him to a large hall where many white-uniformed students were already gathered. The students murmured nervously as Cecilia White, a stern-looking woman with graying hair, stepped forward to address them. "Good afternoon, students," she began, her voice commanding attention. "I am Cecilia White, a member of the board. It has been decided that it is time for a diagnostic evaluation of your ranks." She paused for effect, letting her gaze sweep over the room. "These tests will not be easy. They will test your stamina, your strength, your agility, your intellect, and your mana capacity. And make no mistake, we are looking for the best of the best." A murmur of worry and apprehension rippled through the crowd, but Cecilia wasn''t finished. "After the tests are complete, each of you will have a psychagogic interview with a random professor. So make sure you''re at the top of your game, because we will be watching." The students shifted uneasily as Cecilia stepped back, her eyes still fixed on them. It was clear that she meant business, and that the tests were not to be taken lightly. The students grew nervous as Cecilia White''s potent voice hurried them to start. Alex, feeling the pressure, decided to tackle the intellect evaluation first. He sat down at an available desk and took the IQ test. Thirty minutes later, he was done. As he wondered which test to take next, a commotion broke out. Max, Alex''s friend, was taking the strength test and breaking records left and right. Max lifted a bar with 70 kg, breaking the previous record for a 12-year-old of 55 kg. Alex and the other students cheered him on. Max moved on to the agility test, where he sprinted 100 meters in just 9 seconds, breaking yet another record. He then aced the stamina test before moving on to the intellect evaluation. Alex and the other students were shocked as Max''s intellect score was beyond anything they had ever seen. Despite being amazed, Alex was happy for his friend''s drastic change of power in just one month. As Max moved on to the next test, no one else seemed to want to go after him. So, Alex stepped up and was asked to state his first and last name by the teacher holding a pen and paper "Alex Stern," Alex responded. When the teacher listened to the name, he looked at Alex, analyzing him. "Go on, I don¡¯t have all day." Hearing this, Alex went for the kill and chose to set the weight at 50 kg. He picked up the weight and lifted it. After he dropped it, the teacher intervened, "Sorry, but you have to do it again. I didn''t watch properly." Alex gasped for air and was dumbfounded, but he didn¡¯t want to be rude on his first day with one teacher, so he endured. After doing it again, he finally moved on to the sprint. He was very tired, and he had been in bed for one month. His physical condition wasn''t at its best, but even so, he managed to do the 100 meters in 10.5 seconds. It was really good, but as Alex was feeling proud of his time, the teacher said, "Alex Stern, you started earlier than the bell. One second will be added to your time." Alex had an excellent time, but now it was only average. Alex was fuming at this professor; they were treating him differently from the others. He continued to the stamina test. After lifting twice and running, Alex was a bit tired, but he aced the stamina test anyway. As he was going to the last test, he saw a big line of people waiting. This was the line to take the mana capacity test, and the next person taking the test was Samantha. The test was simple; you only needed to stand still, and an old woman from the church would use her hereditary and unique ability, "Eyes of Truth." This ability allowed her to see the mana capacity of a person with her eyes. After seeing it, she would turn and grade it to Klaus, who was seated at a desk, writing the ranking of mana capacity. Stolen story; please report. As Samantha stepped forward, the old woman used her "Eyes of Truth" on Samantha. She was shocked; she had never seen such a big mana capacity. Admired, she turned and said to Klaus, "Truly terrifying, she is S tier." Klaus, shocked, smiled and wrote the grade. Next were two students who were normal C tier, and after them was Emily, who also scored an S. After ten minutes, it was Max''s turn. Klaus smiled as he saw Max. When the lady used her "Eyes of Truth," she gasped and clapped. She praised Max; his mana capacity was so powerful it almost touched the ceiling of the hall. "Truly magnificent. The first SS I see is amazing just by looking at it. It''s making my eyes hurt," she praised. After about ten minutes, it was finally Alex''s turn. He nervously walked to the old lady and said with a timid voice, "Alex Stern." Klaus, hearing it, yawned and relaxed, not expecting Alex to be any good. As the old lady looked at Alex with her "Eyes of Truth," all of a sudden, the lady grabbed her stomach and started to vomit. On the floor, crawling and screaming, she started to scream to Klaus while coughing, "RUN! RUN! RUN NOW! MONSTER! RUN!" . As everyone, including Alex, looked on in terror, the old lady screamed about a monster. No one knew what she was talking about, and she fainted from exhaustion. Klaus ordered the other teachers to take her to the infirmary. Alex couldn''t believe his luck. He had been waiting for his turn to demonstrate his powers, but when he finally got his chance, the old lady had to go crazy. The students started gossiping, saying that Max was so powerful that after she used her abilities on two more other students after Max, she went mad. Alex realized he had only one option: he had to go to the psychagogic interview. He entered the interview room and smiled when he saw that Olana would be the one interviewing him. "Hello Olana," Alex greeted the interviewer with a joyful tone. "Well, well, well, if it isn''t Alex Stern," Olana smiled back. "How did the test go?" "Good, I guess," Alex responded, but he couldn''t help but add, "You should have seen Max. He was really good. He broke every record and even made that poor old woman go crazy with his power!" Olana nodded in understanding. "I know, I know. But let''s focus on you now. You can choose your own classes, other than arcane class and elemental teaching, of course. Pick another three or four to your liking." Alex''s eyes lit up at the opportunity to choose his classes. "Hmm, let me see," he pondered for a moment. "I want potions, sword arts, and teras anatomy." "Excellent choices," Olana grinned. "But do you know what the elemental teaching class is all about?" "No, not really," Alex admitted, intrigued. "It''s the best class, especially made for the four heirs," Olana explained with a devious smile. "And the teacher is the most beautiful woman in the city, Olana Grace." Alex couldn''t help but roll his eyes. "Of course, it is," he said with a smirk. Olana laughed and patted him on the head. "You''re too funny, Alex. But in all seriousness, I''m glad to see you''re doing well. You''ve been through a lot." Alex''s expression softened. "Yeah, I miss them every day. But thanks to you, I''ve been able to keep going." Olana smiled warmly. "That''s what I''m here for, Alex. Now go choose your classes and make the most of your time here at the Institute." In the infirmary, Arnold, the headmaster, entered wearing his half-moon spectacles and with his long, silver beard. He went to the bed of the old woman and asked her what had happened. "He is a monster, a complete monster," she said. Arnold tried to calm her down and asked how big it was. Terrified, she responded, "I don''t know, headmaster. I couldn''t see the end of it." Arnold took a step back, frightened by the idea that a person who could measure his mana capacity with one look couldn''t see the end of a 12-year-old kid''s power. He closed his eyes and thought to himself, "Alex Stern, I knew you wouldn''t disappoint me." Chapter 10: The Classroom Alex struggled to find his classroom. A lot of students were walking on the corridors also trying to find their classrooms. After a long search, Alex finally found his classroom. Yesterday test results were out Alex and all his class were given the Novice rank, with the exception of Samantha, and Emily who were given the never seen before low-apprentice rank, from that moment onwards they were regarded as celebrities in the institute, but without a doubt the biggest celebrity in the institute was Max, he had received the highest rank that someone in the first year ever got in the entry tests, max was now the youngest apprentice rank ever, Alex was very proud to have such a strong friend. Alex was now in his white EIL uniform, sitting in the corner of the classroom, waiting for class to start. Suddenly, Max, accompanied by three boys who looked like nobles, entered the room. After glancing at his classmates, Max spotted Alex and made his way over to him. Max looked at Alex with a sad expression and said, "I''m sorry, Alex. I''ve been dealing with some personal issues. I wanted to visit you in the hospital, but I couldn''t bring myself to do it." Alex nodded and replied, "It''s all good. I''m better now. Congratulations on reaching apprentice rank! " Max smiled and said, "thank you, I¡¯m sure you will get there in no time. Let''s talk after class." With that, Max and his three friends walked to the back of the class to take their seats. Looking around, he noticed that the other students were already settling in and chatting with each other. Alex felt a bit out of place and unsure how to approach them. He decided to keep to himself for the time being and wait for the class to start. Alex noticed that he and Max weren¡¯t the only heirs in this class, Emily and Samantha were part of this class to. As the clock ticked closer to the start of the class, the students started to quiet down and take their seats. Alex and his classmates waited for the professor to arrive. A few moments later, the door opened, and a tall man with a thick beard and a warm smile entered the room. "Good morning, class," said the Professor in a deep, booming voice. "My name is Professor Harrow, and I''ll be your headteacher for this semester. Today in this class we are going to talk about the power ranking system of the Church of Elements." The teacher appeared to be a tall, young man with a thick beard who came from a third-tier noble family. He had a well-groomed appearance with neatly styled hair, and his clothing might be of good quality, although not necessarily flashy or ostentatious. His facial features could be sharp and defined, suggesting a sense of determination and confidence. He had a fit and slender build, with good posture that exuded a sense of discipline and authority. "As you know, the Church of Elements is a powerful organization that protects the world from teras and other threats. And within this organization, there is a ranking system that determines the level of skill and expertise of its members. Let''s start with the lowest rank, which is Novice. This is someone who is just starting to learn a skill and has very little experience and knowledge. They may not be able to perform basic tasks without guidance. Next is Apprentice, which represents someone who has progressed beyond the novice level and has a basic understanding of the skill. Apprentices are still learning and may need supervision or instruction, but they are capable of performing some tasks on their own. Moving up, we have Adept. This rank represents someone who has become proficient in the skill and has a solid understanding of its principles and techniques. Adepts are skilled practitioners who can perform complex tasks with ease and may be trusted with more advanced responsibilities. If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. Specialist is the next rank, representing someone who has developed a high degree of expertise in a particular area of the skill. Specialists have honed their skills to a level beyond that of most practitioners and may be sought after for their specialized knowledge and abilities. Expert is the second highest rank, representing someone who has reached a high level of skill and proficiency in the subject and has a broad understanding of its principles and techniques. Experts have considerable experience and are capable of handling even the most challenging tasks with confidence. Now, we come to the highest ranks. Masters are highly skilled practitioners who have extensive knowledge and experience and are recognized as leaders in their field. They have achieved a level of mastery that most practitioners cannot match. Grandmasters are considered to be legendary figures in their field, with a level of mastery beyond most practitioners. They are recognized as some of the most skilled practitioners in the skill and are highly respected. Here at EIL, our headmaster is a grandmaster-rank mage. Remember, if you see him, always be polite and show respect. And finally, we have Archon, which is the highest rank in the power ranking system. Archons are considered to be supreme authorities in their field and have achieved a level of mastery that is unmatched by any other. They are often revered as living legends". "Max, Emily, and Samantha, I see that you three are looking quite impressed. That''s because Archon is a very rare and prestigious rank, with only the heirs of the elements having the potential to achieve it. Archons have a level of power that is unparalleled and can be a great threat to humankind if they choose to use their powers for harm or domination. However, it''s important to note that the level of threat an Archon poses would depend on their motivations and the extent of their powers." As the teacher finished his explanation of the power ranking, Emily couldn''t help but glance over at Alex to see his reaction. Surprisingly, he seemed unfazed by the teacher''s cheap provocation. Emily had been curious about Alex since the ceremony night where he had single-handedly defeated one tera. She often found herself sneaking away to the hospital when visiting her mother to spy on him, even though she didn''t know why. After the incident, Emily went to the location where it had all happened. The ground was burnt to ash and even the stones were nothing but dust. She went with Max and she knew that he was terrified by the destruction, but Emily was intrigued by the mysterious power that Alex had used to defeat the tera. When the officers from the church arrived at the scene, all they found was Alex and the tera core. After an evaluation, they discovered that the core belonged to a very strong tempest grade tera. Emily couldn''t believe that a 10-year-old boy could have killed it. The more she thought about it, the more she wanted to uncover more information about Alex. After that, the teacher continued the lesson: "Alright class, now let''s move on to discussing Tera grades and the threat levels they produce. As you all know, teras are powerful creatures with varying levels of abilities, and it''s important to understand their threat level in order to properly handle them. Let''s start with Leviathan grade teras. These dragon-like creatures are incredibly rare and powerful, capable of causing significant destruction and loss of life through brute force alone. They are nearly impossible to defeat or subdue and their body remains are sold for an exorbitant amount of gold. Now, moving on to Infernal grade teras. These are dangerous creatures that pose a serious threat to human life and can cause significant damage. They often act as group chieftains or bosses to a group of Tempest grade teras, and their body parts are sold for a reasonable amount of gold. Speaking of Tempest grade teras, they are menacing and can pose a significant challenge to inexperienced individuals or small groups. However, they are not necessarily a threat to larger populations or skilled adventurers. These teras usually travel in groups and can evolve into Infernal grade with experience, and their body parts can be sold for normal quantities of gold coins." As the teacher finishes explaining, Alex interrupts with a sour tone, "What about Primordial grade?" The class bursts out laughing, including the teacher with a light smile. However, Emily speaks up and confirms that they too have heard about this threat from other adults. The teacher''s expression changes to a serious one as he addresses the class, "Primordial grade teras are cataclysmic in nature. They have the power to cause catastrophic events on a global scale, potentially leading to the end of civilization as we know it. However, there is no registry of this threat ever appearing, and it''s been said to be a myth. Rest assured; this is something that will never happen." As the class continued, Emily couldn''t help but wonder if Alex knew more about the Primordial grade teras than he let on. She made a mental note to try and talk to him about it later. Overall, the lesson on the power ranking system and tera grades was informative and eye-opening. Alex realized that there was still so much he didn''t know about the world he lived in and the threats that existed within it. Chapter 11: A Chance Encounter in the Cafeteria After class, the students hurriedly left the classroom and made their way to the cafeteria. Alex was excited to have lunch with Max and spend some quality time with his friend. As he stepped into the cafeteria, he was greeted by a spacious room with high ceilings and large windows that allowed natural light to flood in, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The walls were painted in a cozy earthy tone that made the space feel comfortable and welcoming. The long wooden tables and benches were beautifully arranged, offering ample seating for the students. The bright red and yellow placemats added a touch of color and liveliness to the room. The aroma of freshly cooked food filled the air, blending with the cheerful chatter of the students as they indulged in their meals. At one corner of the room, there was a large display of delectable desserts and snacks that enticed the students with their irresistible flavors. The cafeteria was a bustling hub of activity, a place where students could come together to enjoy a meal and catch up with friends. As Alex scanned the room, he noticed that Max''s table was already packed with students having a lively conversation. Realizing he might not get a chance to sit with him, Alex decided to find another table and catch up with Max later. He picked up a tray and grabbed a plate of succulent roasted duck, which was the special of the day, and sat down at an empty table in the corner of the cafeteria. Although the food was mouth-watering, Alex felt a sense of emptiness without any company. He began to reminisce about the times when he used to have lunch with his family, and his thoughts wandered away. Max sat at a table in the cafeteria that had been reserved for him by some of his classmates. He basked in the attention he received, but what he truly desired was to have lunch with Emily Parker. Max had been captivated by her beauty from the moment he laid eyes on her. After the ceremony, Max had only managed to talk to her once, and it was during their visit to the place where Alex''s parents had tragically passed away. Emily had asked Max if he wanted to see the site, and he was enchanted by the fact that such a stunning girl was talking to him, so he agreed without hesitation. As they arrived, Max saw that everything was charred, and in the area that had been most affected by the fire, a bouquet of red flowers had been placed. Max knew that Olana had put the flowers there because they were her favorite, and only he was aware of that. While they were there, Max overheard some adults talking about Alex, and how they believed he was responsible for the fire and that he posed a threat due to his inability to control his powers. Since then, Max had unknowingly harbored a slight fear of Alex. Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere. He had never spoken to Emily again after that day, but today he longed to share a meal with her and converse. Max surveyed the cafeteria in search of Emily, and after a while, he caught a glimpse of her standing with a tray in her hand, chatting with Alex who was seated alone at a table. What perplexed Max was that Alex appeared to be ignoring Emily. "Excuse me, is this seat taken?" Emily asked with a gentle smile, trying to get Alex''s attention. But Alex remained lost in thought, staring straight ahead. Emily tried again, "Alex, may I sit here?" When there was still no response, Emily''s patience wore thin. "ALEX! CAN I SIT HERE OR NOT?" she exclaimed, causing everyone in the cafeteria to turn and look at them. Emily was somewhat of a celebrity at the institute, and Alex was ignoring her. Startled by the outburst, Alex jumped and replied, "Of course, please sit down." Emily smiled and took a seat as if nothing had happened. "Hi Alex, my name is Emily," she said, introducing herself. "I know who you are," replied Alex. "Your mother helped me a great deal when I was in the hospital. She''s a very kind woman." Emily beamed with pride. "Yes, she is. She told me she was taking care of you," she said. But then, she lowered her voice and added, "I''m sorry for what happened. It must have been very difficult for you." Alex sighed, feeling a bit down. "Thank you, Emily. It was a tough time, but I''m doing better now. I take things one day at a time." Trying to cheer him up, Emily said, "My mom told me that you''re amazing. You survived a massive mana discharge in your body and only stayed in a coma for a month, while most people die or end up with permanent damage for the rest of their lives. I''m sure you''ll be able to do great things!" Alex was surprised to hear this. He had thought he fell into a coma due to emotional shock and stress. "I still don''t really know what happened. I don''t remember anything. I just remember feeling so sad and cold, and then I blacked out." Emily was stunned. "What?! You don''t know what happened? You defeated the Tera with the power of fire! Everything burned until even the stones on the ground turned to dust! After they found you, they analyzed the Tera''s core and it was a very strong Tempest!" Alex tried to remember, but his memory failed him. "How do you know all this, Emily?" he asked. "I passed by the place where it happened with Max, and I''ve been curious to meet you ever since," she explained. "It was a tragedy, but I also wonder what a Tera that strong was doing so close to the cathedral on such an important night." Alex''s eyes widened, intrigued by her question. But before he could respond, they were interrupted by a person. Chapter 12: Potions Class Max smiled and asked, "Hey guys, what are you talking about?" Alex, who was lost in thought, was startled and replied, "Nothing special, do you want to sit with us?" Max frowned, wondering what Alex was hiding. Could it be that he also liked Emily? "Never mind, Alex. I just came here to ask Emily if she wants to go with me to the next class," Max said. Emily turned to Alex and asked, "Shall we all go together?" "Alex doesn''t have elementary Bible studies," Max responded. Alex checked his schedule and confirmed that his next class was Potions. "But later, we''ll have Olana''s class. We could all go together," he suggested, looking at Max. Emily stood up from the table and said, "Sure, see you later, and have a good class." She then ran off. Alex turned to Max and said, "See you later, Max. Have a good class." Max nodded and watched as Emily disappeared from view. After a lengthy search, Alex finally stumbled upon the potions room - a dimly lit chamber with gray stone walls and a towering, vaulted ceiling. High, narrow windows allowed natural light to filter in, but the majority of illumination was provided by flickering candles and torches lining the walls. The room was lined with shelves brimming with ingredients and glass jars housing an array of potions, with a colossal cauldron positioned at its center for students to practice their potion-making skills. Several workbenches surrounded the cauldron, offering space for experimentation. Taking a seat at a table towards the back of the room, Alex soon noticed that his cauldron was different from those in front of his fellow students. Nevertheless, he ignored it and waited patiently for the class to begin. Eventually, Klaus, the same teacher who had assessed the students'' mana capacity during their first evaluation, strode into the room, his demeanor stern and serious. As he began to speak, the room fell silent. "My name is Klaus, and I am the source of knowledge for all who seek wisdom," he declared, his words grandiose in Alex''s opinion. However, Alex struggled to focus as a pungent, unusual odor filled the air. Searching for the source of the smell, Alex peered under his table, only to find a fellow student sporting large glasses, a cloth covering his nose and mouth, and gloves holding two tubes of noxious solutions. Startled, Alex recoiled, drawing the attention of Klaus, who reprimanded him sharply for interrupting his introduction. "Alex Stern, I know you think you''re special, but please let normal people learn," Klaus scolded him. Dumbfounded by the bizarre turn of events, Alex apologized to the teacher and returned his attention to Klaus''s speech. However, he couldn''t help but glance back at the strange boy under his table, still producing the putrid odor. "Hey, what are you doing? It smells awful," Alex whispered. "You''ll get caught, and this teacher won''t go easy on you!" The student, his hair a disheveled mess, looked up at Alex and hushed him. "Shh, it''s okay," he reassured Alex. "Just pass me the moon powder on the table." Avoiding another scolding, Alex peered down at the table, spying three powders: one blue, one white, and one green. Ruling out the green powder, he leaned down to ask the boy which one he needed. However, the boy''s bottles were already overflowing with a liquid that appeared never-ending. "Moon powder, now! Quickly, before this explodes!" the boy urged, a look of panic etched on his eyes. In a split second, Alex realized it was a life-or-death situation and made a snap decision, grabbing a spoonful of white powder and passing it to the boy. This novel''s true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there. Alex realized that it was a life or death situation and quickly made a decision. He grabbed a spoonful of the white powder that was on the table and handed it to the boy without even looking at it. The boy dumped the powder into the tube he was holding, and as soon as the liquid came into contact with the powder, a noxious smoke with a terrible smell filled the room, spreading halfway across the space. The professor immediately used an arcane spell to create a vortex and expelled the smoke out of the window, but the foul odor remained in the air. The professor then approached Alex sternly and said, "I knew you would be a problematic student, but I never expected you to almost destroy the entire classroom during our first lesson. Everyone in this room knows how dangerous it is to meddle with unknown materials. Please leave the classroom and think about what you have done. I also want a full-page apology from you." As the professor turned his back on Alex, the young man was left in shock at his misfortune. However, before the professor could continue, a loud voice interrupted him. "Professor Klaus, the fault is mine. It wouldn''t be fair for Alex to suffer the consequences of my actions." A small, dark-skinned boy with big glasses, spiky brown hair, and freckles on his face suddenly emerged from under the table. He was wearing the school uniform and had a scarf wrapped around his neck that previously covered his face. Upon seeing the boy, Professor Klaus smiled and said, "Of course, the worst always ends up sticking together. Both of you, leave the classroom now!" Without the ability to contest the teacher''s decision, the two exited the classroom. As they walked down the hallway, the remorseful student turned to Alex and apologized, "I''m sorry Alex, I let you down." Alex noticed the regret in the student''s expression and sighed, "It''s alright, I think I may have given you the wrong powder. I had a feeling it was blue..." Confused, the student responded, "Alex, the moon powder is actually green..." Upon hearing this, Alex burst into laughter, causing the student to struggle to hold back his own laughter. After a moment of shared amusement, the student introduced himself, "Nice to meet you, Alex. My name is Jitendrasingh Feller." As Jitendrasingh extended his hand for a shake, Alex was puzzled by the unfamiliar name. Jitendrasingh chuckled and said, "Just call me Jiten, haha." Curious, Alex asked Jiten, "Why were you making that potion in class?" Jiten explained, "I was trying to make a smoke potion to help people fall asleep. There''s been a lot of noise near my house at night, and my father, who''s getting old, needs rest." Alex suggested, "But wouldn''t it be easier to just complain or ask them to keep it down?" Jiten replied, "We''ve tried, but we suspect the noise is coming from one of the church facilities, so it wouldn''t do much good to complain to the church about the church..." Chapter 13: Olanas Class "Alex, do you want to come to the library with me to write an apology letter to Klaus?" Jiten asked. Alex had already forgotten about it and sighed, but eventually agreed. They both went to the library, which was a spacious and quiet room with wooden shelves and plenty of books. Alex was a bit lost because he had never written an apology letter before. Jiten noticed his friend''s confusion and helped him. For some reason, Jiten was very experienced in writing apology letters. After a while, they heard the bell that signaled the end of classes. "Jiten, can you see if you can find someone in our class who has notes on today''s lesson?" Alex asked. "My dear Alex, do you know who you''re talking to? I could make those potions from today''s class when I was four years old," Jiten replied. Alex laughed at his friend''s comment and said, "Alright, potion master, I''m heading to Olana''s class now." Upon hearing this, Jiten replied, "Oh, right. I momentarily forgot that you are an elemental heir." Alex heard this and responded, "I wish more people were like you." Trying to find Olana''s classroom was a challenge. Everyone was running out of their classrooms after a tiring day. After a while, Alex saw Samantha, Emily, and Max standing at the door of Olana''s class chatting. When Emily spotted Alex, she beamed and called out to him, "Hey Alex! How did your class go?" Alex, scratching the back of his head, replied with a somber tone, "Not so great. I made a new friend, but it didn''t end well. I got kicked out of the classroom." Samantha, upon hearing this, gave him a judgmental look, but Max intervened with a friendly gesture, placing his hand on Alex''s shoulder and advising him, "Remember, Alex, you need to set a good example in class. You never know where you''ll end up in the future." Before Alex could speak, Emily jumped in, "Hold on a minute, guys. You can''t judge Alex without knowing what really happened. What''s the real story, Alex?" Alex smiled and began recounting the incident. "So, I walked into class and smelled this horrible odor. I looked under the desk, and there was Jiten, holding two bottles and pouring out some stinky stuff. He then asked me for a spoonful of ''moon powder'', but I had no clue what that was, so I ended up giving him salt instead. When he mixed it, it caused an explosion, and the whole room reeked. The teacher kicked me and Jiten out of the classroom and made us write a one-page apology." You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author. Emily chuckled at the story, but warned Alex, "Be careful next time, Alex. You don''t want anything worse to happen." Max added, "And watch out for Jiten. His father is John Feller, a crazy scientist with a bad reputation." Alex appreciated the concern but defended his new friend, "Thanks, guys, but Jiten is a good person. He even tried to defend me when we got in trouble." Curious as ever, Emily asked, "But why was he making a potion under the table?" Alex explained, "he told me he hears weird noises near his house at night. But he doesn''t complain because he thinks it''s coming from the church facilities." Emily''s face lit up, "Wow, investigating sounds like a great idea!" exclaimed Emily with enthusiasm. Before Alex could reply, Samantha turned to the newly arrived Olana and greeted her with a warm smile, saying "It''s lovely to meet you, Lady Olana. My name is Samantha." Olana returned Samantha''s smile and replied graciously, "The pleasure is mine, Samantha. Shall we head inside now?" The group nodded in agreement and followed Olana into the classroom. The classroom was spacious, with four individual desks lined up side by side. As the four students entered the room, their teacher, Olana, instructed them to take a seat in a specific order. "Please sit in this order," she said, "Max, Samantha, Emily, and Alex." The students quickly obeyed, but Emily couldn''t help but wonder why they were sitting in that order. "Excuse me, why did you seat us in this order?" she asked Olana. Olana smiled and replied, "It''s to separate friends. I heard someone likes to talk during class." As she said this, she looked at Alex. With this, she wanted to separate Alex and her younger brother Max, who she thought were friends, and also give a subtle hint for Alex to be more focused in class. "Hello and welcome to the class of elemental studies," Olana continued. "As it''s not necessary to take attendance because it''s just you four, I''ll start by saying that in this class, you''ll try to deepen your relationship with your elemental power. As the first exercise, I''ll give each of you an object that belonged to the ancient heroes. After receiving the object, close your eyes and try to make contact with the element." The students eagerly awaited their objects, and Olana began distributing them. Max received a small golden vase with soil, Samantha was given a gold basin filled with water, and Emily received a bracelet with a small feather. When it was Alex''s turn, Olana gave him a wooden stick with a burned tip. "Sorry, Alex," Olana apologized, "unlike them, the hero of fire didn''t leave any treasure behind, and if he did, no one knows where it is. But I''m giving you this stick because I believe you can still connect with the element of fire!" The students all closed their eyes, eager to make contact with their elemental power. However, after an hour, no one had achieved any results. Two hours passed, and still, nothing had happened. Frustration began to set in, but Alex refused to give up. He remembered a conversation he had with Emily in the cafeteria, where she mentioned he had defeated a Tera with the element of fire. He closed his eyes once more and tried to remember the feeling he had that night. Suddenly, he felt an unbearable heat, and in his mind''s eye, he saw mountains full of fire. In the midst of those mountains, a hooded man stood, and as Alex approached, the heat intensified. The hooded man was someone Alex recognized from his dreams when he was in a coma. As he got closer, the person looked at him, and at that moment, Alex saw red eyes under the hood looking at him, and he got scared. Gasping for breath, Alex opened his eyes, and everyone was looking at him with a shocked expression. Before Alex could recover, he looked at his hand, and all that remained of the stick was ashes. Olana clapped and said, "Excellent, Alex! Congratulations on not only being able to communicate with the element but also using it." Emily was also thrilled, proud, and shocked at Alex''s performance. The only one not in the best mental state was Max. After years of help and lessons from Olana, the best he could do was a small branch, while Alex burned a stick to ashes in his first class. The only thought in Max''s mind was ''monster.'' "You did it, Alex!" Emily exclaimed, beaming at him. "I knew you could do it!" Alex smiled, feeling proud of himself for the first time in a long time. "Thanks, Emily. I couldn''t have done it without you." Emily blushed and responded, "You''re welcome," with a red face. Chapter 14: Looking Ahead Max clenched his fists, feeling frustration boil inside him as he watched his sister and Samantha applauding for Alex. Why did he always have to ruin everything? He thought of the private conversation he had with the bishop after Alex defeated the Tera. "Max, you have to become stronger than the Fire Heir for the sake of your family and humanity. The Fire Hero was actually insane and killed thousands of humans. You have to be stronger than Alex because someday you might have to stop him." Since that day, Max had been training every day to be ready to defend humanity against Alex. He was stronger than Alex now, but Alex''s natural talent still left him feeling inadequate. Max had been practicing his element for a long time, but he could only create a small branch, while Alex had burned a stick to ashes in his first class. Even after being in a coma for a month, Alex still achieved results close to those of Max, who had trained the entire month, during the initial assessment at the institute. Although everyone in the institute believed that Max was the most talented individual since the heroes of the elements, even receiving an unprecedented apprentice rank, Max still felt inferior in terms of talent compared to Alex. Frustrated with everything, Max turned to Samantha, who wasn''t clapping or congratulating Alex. When she caught his gaze, she blushed and said, "Max, in my opinion, you were much better than him." If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation. Max felt a rush of relief and gratitude wash over him. He smiled at Samantha and said, "Thank you, but there are no better or worse. We''re all learning, and Alex and I were just lucky this time," blaming luck for his performance. "My dear students, it''s already late, we''re finishing here for today. You can go home, but don''t forget to train every day, and Alex, no burning anything," Olana said, and Max was the first to leave the classroom. Alex laughed and said, "I''ll do my best not to burn anything." As Max walked away from the classroom, he heard Alex''s laughter behind him. Max clenched his fists again, determined to prove himself against Alex, no matter how talented he was. When Samantha left the classroom after saying goodbye to Olana, only Alex, Emily, and Olana remained in the room. Alex and Emily were leaving the room when Olana said, "Alex Stern, you''re not thinking of leaving without explaining in detail what happened in your potion class today, are you?" Upon hearing this, Alex gulped, and Emily said before running out of the room, "Good luck, see you tomorrow, Alex." Alex was now alone with Olana, and he told her everything that had happened. Olana made sure to give Alex a half-hour lecture, and then she sent him home. After arriving at his small dorm room in the institute''s dormitory, Alex flopped down on his bed, feeling exhausted from the day''s events. The room was sparsely furnished, with only a small desk and chair, a narrow twin bed, and a small wardrobe. The walls were painted a dull beige color, and there was a single window that looked out onto the institute''s courtyard. As he lay there, staring up at the white ceiling, Alex couldn''t help but think about how crazy his first day of classes had been and what the next few years would be like. After a few moments, exhausted, he closed his eyes and fell asleep. Chapter 15: Crazy dream "Fresh fruits, the best and cheapest in all of Govirdale! Come quick, or you''ll regret it later!" shouted the vendor. Alex''s eyes widened in amazement as he looked around the busy street market. He couldn''t believe what he was seeing; humans and Teras were living together in harmony, trading goods and chatting as if they had been lifelong friends. The scene before him was like nothing he had ever witnessed before. Growing up, Alex had been taught to fear and distrust Teras, and he had always believed that they were evil beings. But here, in the middle of Govirdale, he saw that his beliefs were unfounded. Humans and Teras were working together, living side by side, and it was a beautiful sight. He watched as a group of human children ran past him, giggling and chasing a young Tera boy. The Tera boy had wings and was fluttering above the ground, laughing with the children. As he continued to walk through the market, Alex couldn''t help but feel a sense of relief wash over him. Maybe the stories he had been told about Teras were wrong. Maybe they weren''t evil beings after all. Alex couldn''t believe what he was seeing. How was it possible for him to be dreaming of Olana, and why was she here in this marketplace with him? He felt a rush of emotions, including confusion and excitement. "Olana, what are you doing here? How can you be in my dream?" Alex asked, trying to make sense of it all. Olana chuckled softly, a warm and reassuring sound. "My dear boy, this is not just any dream. This is a dream that you have created with your mind. It is a reflection of your deepest desires and fears." Alex was taken aback by her words. "My deepest desires and fears? What do you mean?" Olana placed a comforting hand on Alex''s shoulder. "You long for a world where humans and Teras can coexist in harmony. And you fear that your power will destroy everything around you. This dream is your mind''s way of exploring these feelings." Alex nodded slowly, still trying to process everything. "I see. So, what should I do?" Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. Olana smiled kindly. "Just observe and learn, my dear. There is much to be gained from exploring the depths of your mind." Alex felt a sense of peace wash over him as he watched Olana disappear into the crowds. He took a deep breath, feeling grateful for the experience. This dream had shown him a different perspective, one that challenged the beliefs he had been taught all his life. He wondered if there were other things he had been wrong about, and he made a mental note to explore them further. As he continued walking through the market, Alex noticed a group of people gathered around a street performer. The performer was juggling balls of fire, making them dance and twirl in the air. Alex felt a sudden surge of energy within him, and he realized that he could control fire too. Without even thinking, he lifted his hand and summoned a small flame. The crowd gasped and cheered, amazed by the display of his power. Alex felt a sense of exhilaration as he played with the flame, making it dance and twist like the performer''s balls of fire. But suddenly, everything changed. A massive wave of fire engulfed the market, destroying everything in its path. People and Teras were screaming and running in every direction, trying to escape the flames. Alex felt his heart sink as he realized what was happening. He looked around, trying to find Olana, but she was nowhere to be seen. Instead, he saw a hooded figure standing in the distance, watching the destruction with a cold detachment. Alex recognized him as the same figure he had seen in his class, the one who had shown him how to use his power. "Why did you do this?" Alex yelled, running towards the figure. "Why did you kill everyone?" The figure turned to face him, and Alex could see the glint of madness in his eyes. "In time, you will understand, young one," he said, before disappearing into the smoke. Alex stood there, watching the destruction unfold before him. He knew that this dream was far from over, and that he had much to learn before he could wake up. But for now, he could only watch and hope that he would find a way to stop the madness before it was too late. Alex woke up with a start, sweat dripping down his face. He sat up in his narrow bed, his heart still pounding in his chest. It was just a dream, he told himself, but it felt so real. He couldn''t shake the feeling of unease that had settled over him. What did the dream mean? And who was the hooded figure? He sat up in his narrow bed, his heart still pounding in his chest. It was just a dream, he told himself, but it felt so real. He couldn''t shake the feeling of unease that had settled over him. What did the dream mean? And who was the hooded figure? Taking a deep breath, Alex calmed down and took a shower before heading to the dining hall for breakfast. As he ate his meal, he couldn''t help but think about the dream and what it could possibly mean. He tried to push the thoughts out of his head and focus on the day ahead. His first class of the day was Teras Anatomy, and he made his way to the classroom. It was a small auditorium, and the walls were lined with rows of seats, all facing a large stage at the front of the room. Various models of Teras were on display, each one showing different aspects of their anatomy. As he was searching for a seat, he felt a slap on the back of his head. "Alex, my boy, ready for another class?" It was Jiten, one of his classmates and a friend. Turning around, Alex smiled and said, "Good morning to you too, Jiten. Yeah, I''m as ready as I''ll ever be." Jiten chuckled and patted Alex on the back. "That''s the spirit, my friend. Let''s find a good seat and get ready to learn!" Chapter 16: Lucy Turner Jiten and Alex were sitting in the classroom, waiting for their professor to arrive and start the lecture on Teras anatomy. They were discussing the upcoming exam and their study plans when the door opened, and a beautiful brunette girl walked in. Jiten''s eyes widened as he took in her stunning features, her long hair cascading down her back, and her green eyes sparkling as she looked around the room. The girl approached their table with a friendly smile, and Jiten could feel his heart race as she greeted them. "Hi, you must be Jiten that Alex was telling me about. My name is Emily," she said, extending her hand. Jiten shook her hand and felt a jolt of electricity run through his body. "Nice to meet you, Emily. Of course, you can sit with us," he said, gesturing towards the empty chair beside him. As Emily took a seat, Jiten couldn''t help but steal glances at her, admiring her beauty and elegance. He wondered why someone as stunning as her would want to sit with them, but he didn''t let it show. Instead, he decided to engage her in conversation and make her feel welcome. "So, Emily, what brings you to this lecture?" Jiten asked, trying to sound casual. "I''m taking the Teras anatomy course too," Emily replied, smiling. "I heard it''s a really interesting subject, and I''m excited to learn more about it." Jiten nodded, impressed by Emily''s enthusiasm for the course. "Yeah, it''s one of my second favorite courses. Our professor is really funny," he said with a smile on his face. "This teacher is a former student of my father, her name is Lucy Turner. My father told me that she was very intelligent, but everyone thinks that she is crazy!" Jiten burst out laughing. This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source. Alex felt bad for the teacher and asked, "Do you think she is crazy as well?" "I¡¯m 99% sure that she is mental," Jiten responded while making a crazy face. Emily and Alex laughed, but Emily asked, "By the way, why not 100% and instead 99%?" "In science, you never know who is crazy or a genius, so we never know," Jiten responded while looking up at the ceiling of the classroom. Alex grinned and said, "Very deep coming from a smoke genius." Jiten laughed and continued, "Lucy is a tera addict, and she made a theory that shows teras have a baby phase she calls them Effigy, but the church of element nullified it for lacking evidence. She is completely crazy, right? A baby tera ahahah." After hearing this, Alex became pensive, and Emily smiled as they continued to chat about their interests and hobbies. Jiten couldn''t help but notice how easy it was to talk to her, and he mentioned Alex''s comments about her. "Oh, Alex mentioned me to you? I had no idea," Emily said with a wider smile, her green eyes sparkling with curiosity. Alex, who had been engrossed in his own thoughts until then, looked up in surprise. "Wait, what did I say about Emily?" he asked, slightly confused. Jiten chuckled and filled Alex in on the conversation they had earlier. "I was telling Emily how cool you are, and she seemed surprised, so I assumed you must have said something nice about her too," Jiten said with a grin. Emily''s cheeks turned a deeper shade of pink as she listened to Jiten''s explanation. "I-I didn''t know you thought that, Alex," she stammered, feeling a bit flustered. Alex smiled reassuringly at her. "Of course, I do, Emily. You''re a great person," he said, making her feel a little more at ease. Just then, the professor walked into the room, and the students quieted down in anticipation of the lecture. Jiten and Alex settled into their seats, but Emily''s mind was still racing with thoughts of the unexpected conversation. She couldn''t help but feel a little flutter in her stomach at the thought that Alex seemed to think highly of her. Lucy while walking to the professor desk she misstopped and felled Lucy Turner was a young scientist, probably in her mid-twenties. She had long, curly brown hair that she usually kept tied up in a messy bun, and a pair of large, round glasses perched on her nose. Her eyes were a bright, piercing blue, and her face was usually contorted in an intense expression as she delved deep into her research. She was on the shorter side, with a slight build, but her energy and passion more than made up for her lack of physical stature. Despite her brilliant mind, she often dressed in a disheveled and haphazard manner, sometimes wearing the same clothes for days on end, as if she didn''t have time for anything but her work. Chapter 17: Bishop Influence As Lucy picked herself up, Jiten and Alex exchanged a worried glance. Lucy had a reputation for being clumsy and forgetful, and they were concerned that she might have hurt herself. "Are you okay, Professor Turner?" Jiten asked, getting up from his seat to help her. Lucy brushed herself off and straightened her glasses before responding. "I''m fine, thank you, Jiten. Just a little distracted," she said, her eyes darting around the room. Jiten and Alex exchanged another glance, wondering what could be distracting her. As Lucy began to speak, her voice commanded the attention of the students in the room. She spoke with a gentle yet firm tone, projecting her voice so that everyone could hear her clearly. Her words were precise, and her explanations were thorough, leaving no room for confusion or ambiguity. She used examples and analogies to help the students grasp the more complex concepts, and her passion for the subject matter shone through in every word she spoke. Despite her disheveled appearance, Lucy had an air of confidence and authority that made it clear she was in control of the classroom. Her forgetfulness, though sometimes a source of amusement for the students, was quickly forgotten as they became engrossed in the lecture. Jiten and Alex were no exception. They took meticulous notes, scribbling down every word Lucy said, eager to absorb as much knowledge as possible. They were impressed by her depth of understanding and her ability to explain complex topics in a way that was both accessible and engaging. As the lecture progressed, Jiten and Alex found themselves becoming more and more invested in the subject matter. They asked questions, made comments, and engaged in lively discussions with their classmates. By the time the lecture was over, they felt invigorated and eager to learn more. As the lecture drew to a close, Jiten and Alex gathered their things and prepared to leave. Emily lingered behind, gathering her own notes and packing up her bag. Jiten couldn''t help but feel a little disappointed that she wasn''t leaving with them, but he didn''t want to be too forward. If you find this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. It was nice meeting you, by the way, if you and Alex need help on the investigation of the noise at night near your house count me in!" she said before turning to leave. As they walked out of the classroom, Jiten turned to Alex. "What do you think of Emily?" he asked, trying to be casual. Alex shrugged. "She''s a nice person. Why do you ask?" he replied, looking at Jiten curiously. Jiten smiled, a little sheepishly. "I don''t know, maybe it''s just my imagination, but I think she might have a crush on you, man," he said, shrugging his own shoulders. "What?! Me?! No way!" Alex choked out, surprised by Jiten''s suggestion. "It''s just a hunch. Don''t worry too much about it, fire boy," Jiten said with a playful smile, trying to lighten the mood. Alex chuckled and shook his head. "Thanks for looking out for me, Jiten, but I think you might be mistaken. Emily and I are just friends," he said. Jiten nodded, accepting Alex''s response. "Alright, man. Just thought I''d mention it," he said. "Man, I''m hungry as hell. Let''s go eat!" exclaimed Jiten. Jiten and Alex arrived at the cafeteria and headed towards the food counter to serve themselves. After filling their plates, they scanned the area for an available table and chose the one on the left corner. While passing by other tables, Alex noticed someone he recognized. It was Max. Alex greeted him, "Hi Max, what''s up? Yesterday you left too early. After lunch, we could go to the sword arts class together!" Max saw Alex and responded, "Alex, sorry about yesterday, but I was late to a meeting." Alex joked, "Congratulations, Mr. Apprentice Rank. I hope she''s the one!" After listening to this, Max responded without smiling, "The meeting was with Bishop Marley of the church. Currently, I don''t have the time to have that kind of life." Alex then said, "Oh, I didn''t know. If you ever need something, tell me. I will try to help. But after lunch, do you want to go together?" To this, Max replied, "I have already promised Samantha to go with her. Maybe next time." "Okay, see you in class," said Alex as he left with Jiten to the table. "Jeez, what an ass," muttered Jiten as he sat in front of Alex. "Jiten, don''t say that. Max is my friend, he is just stressed," said Alex. "Alex, how naive can you be? That guy isn''t your friend. The way he speaks to you is like he''s doing you a favor by uttering a word." exclaimed Jiten. After saying this, Jiten looked at Alex, who was looking down, looking very sad. Feeling bad, Jiten continued, "Sorry, Alex. I overreacted." "No, you are kind of right. Since the ceremony, he''s been acting strange. He used to be so cool and nice. He was my first friend. Back then, we spent all day playing together," reminisced Alex, looking back at the time when his parents were alive. "I heard him talking about Bishop Marley, that snake. Maybe he''s the reason," said Jiten, looking around to make sure no one was listening. "Alex, I need to tell you something, but you can''t tell anyone." Chapter 18: Black Lightning Jiten leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. "I''ve heard some rumors about Bishop Marley. Apparently, he''s been making some shady deals with people in town. Some say he''s even involved in illegal activities." Alex''s eyes widened in surprise. "That''s crazy. Why would a bishop do something like that?" Jiten shrugged. "I don''t know for sure, but it''s definitely something to keep an eye on. And if Max is involved with him in any way, it could explain why he''s been acting so strange." Alex nodded slowly, deep in thought. "I''ll have to keep an eye on him. And maybe try to talk to him about it." Jiten nodded in agreement. "Just be careful, Alex. We don''t know what kind of trouble we might be getting into if we start poking around too much." Alex sighed. "I know, Jiten. But I can''t just ignore this. If there''s something going on with Bishop Marley and Max, I need to find out what it is." Jiten patted his friend on the back. "I know you will, Alex. Just don''t do anything too reckless, okay?" Alex gave him a small smile. "I won''t. Thanks, Jiten. I''m glad I have you as a friend." Jiten grinned back. The author''s narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon. "Anytime, fire boy. Now, let''s eat before our food gets cold!" "By the way, are you crazy? Why in the world are you taking sword arts?" asked Jiten, his face twisted in confusion. "What do you mean why? To learn..." responded Alex, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. "Dude, that class is only for nobles. They already have a foundation in sword play, but we commoners don''t. The noble students use that class to beat up the commoners, so no one except nobles take that class," said Jiten while eating. "I didn''t know that, but I guess I''ll be fine. The teacher won''t let me get beat up," said Alex, feeling relaxed. Jiten slapped his own face. "That''s the worst part. The teacher is Oswin Hart. He''s one of the most famous swordsmen on the continent. He was the only student of the Black Lightning. He doesn''t care about the students." After listening to this, Alex looked confused. "Who the hell is the Black Lightning?" Jiten was surprised that his friend didn''t know. "The Black Lightning is the most famous outlaw on the continent. He''s a grandmaster-rank swordsman. They say he''s so fast that you can''t even see his sword. He used to be the best friend of Arnold Frey, the headmaster. My father saw him once and told me that he was a very nice and honorable man." Alex was fascinated and asked, "What did he do wrong?" "They said that he killed the headmaster''s daughter and a lot of church officials and then disappeared. Since then, there are a lot of stories about what happened, but one thing is certain: no one survives an encounter with the Black Lightning. His bounty is 100 million coins," said Jiten, all excited. "You speak of him like you idolize him," said Alex with food in his mouth. "Alex, I know I''m a potions nerd, and no one will ever be afraid of me, but how awesome is the name Black Lightning! The Church of Elements is the biggest organization in the world, and even they tremble at the mention of the Black Lightning''s name. How cool is that!" said Jiten, very excited. "It''s so strange. I often see posters of wanted criminals in the streets. How come I''ve never seen his poster?" asked Alex. "Oh, that''s because kids take them to put in their rooms or to sell to others. I have two posters of him. I can give you one if you want," said Jiten. "I think I''ll pass, thank you," said Alex. ¡°your loss fire boy¡± said Jiten while eating. After lunch, Alex said goodbye to Jiten and went to the courtyard where the sword arts class was held. Chapter 19: Sword arts As Alex made his way to the courtyard, he couldn''t help but think about what Jiten had told him. The Black Lightning sounded like a legendary figure, and the fact that he had killed the headmaster''s daughter and church officials made him seem like a true outlaw. Despite Jiten''s excitement, Alex couldn''t help but feel a sense of unease about the whole thing. When he arrived at the courtyard, he saw a group of students gathered around a tall man in a long black coat. The man was Oswin Hart, a tall and muscular figure with a stern and serious expression on his face. He had sharp, angular features, including a prominent jawline and high cheekbones. His dark, piercing eyes seemed to bore into anyone who dared to meet his gaze, and his thick eyebrows furrowed in a perpetual scowl. He had short, black hair that was neatly combed to one side, and a well-groomed beard that added to his commanding presence. He wore a simple black leather tunic with matching trousers and boots, adorned only with a silver belt buckle and a sword at his side. Overall, he looked every bit the part of a seasoned and feared swordsman. As Alex approached the group, he could feel his heart beating faster. Oswin looked at the class with disdain, seeing that everyone was already there, he said, "My name is Oswin, and I will be your teacher this year. Let me tell you from the start, I don''t care who you are, who your father is, or his friends. Don''t expect me to teach you something; I only waste time on those who deserve it. You have to have talent, and don''t think you have it just because your sword master told you so. I will be the judge of that. Quickly, everyone grab a sword and come at me." The students quickly dispersed to grab their swords, but Alex hesitated for a moment. He had never held a sword before and didn''t know what to do. Oswin noticed Alex''s hesitation and approached him, his scowl deepening. "What''s your name?" Oswin asked, his voice cold and uninviting. "Uh, Alex," he replied nervously. "Well, Alex, are you going to stand there all day? Or are you going to grab a sword and join the class?" Oswin demanded. Alex hurriedly grabbed a sword from the pile and followed the others to the center of the courtyard. Oswin stood at the other end, his sword at the ready. The students attacked Oswin with their swords, but he easily parried their blows with his own. He moved swiftly and gracefully, his sword whistling through the air as he deftly dodged their attacks. Alex watched in awe as Oswin effortlessly took on the entire class. Despite his initial hesitation, Alex soon found himself caught up in the excitement of the sparring match. He lunged forward, swinging his sword at Oswin with all his might. But Oswin simply sidestepped his attack and retaliated with a swift strike that knocked Alex''s sword out of his hand. He looked up to see Oswin staring at him with a mixture of contempt and amusement. As Max and Samantha attacked Oswin, the clang of swords filled the courtyard. The three of them moved in a blur of swift, fluid movements, their swords slicing through the air with precision. Alex watched intently, trying to learn every technique and strategy that he could. Samantha was the first to fall to Oswin''s skillful attacks. Despite her best efforts, Oswin deftly parried her blows and struck her with a swift, decisive blow. She stumbled backward, her sword clattering to the ground. Max, however, was not so easily defeated. He was filled with excitement and determination as he traded blows with Oswin. His face was a mask of concentration as he attacked with speed and agility. But as the fight wore on, Max began to tire. His movements became slower and less precise, and Oswin saw his opportunity. He planned to strike at Max''s left shoulder, knowing that Max had let his guard down. But Alex had been watching closely, and he saw the opening as well. Without hesitation, he stepped in and deflected the blow, saving Max from certain defeat. Oswin was surprised by Alex''s quick thinking and skillful use of the sword. Quickly, Oswin dashed behind them and pushed them to the ground, ending the fight. As Alex stood up, he saw that Oswin was smiling at him, a small but genuine smile. "That''s enough for today," Oswin said, standing over the fallen students. "You all need to work on your fundamentals. Go practice as you like, but don''t waste my time with sloppy technique and lack of discipline." As the lesson came to an end, the students were leaving. Alex turned to Max and said, "Max, you were incredible. Next time, you''ll get him for sure." However, Max looked at Alex with an angry face and replied, "I would have gotten him if it wasn''t for you intervening. You don''t even know how to swing a sword and came to this class and interrupted my duel with the teacher. Next time, stay still." Everyone in the courtyard heard what he said and started talking to each other. Alex, seeing his friend like that, said, "Sorry, Max. I just wanted to help you." But Max turned his head and said, "I don''t need your help." After that, everyone left the courtyard except for Alex, who was looking at the ground. Suddenly, a voice came from behind, "What a fool." It was Oswin. He continued, "Alex, I see you''ve never had any training with the sword. I''ve been expecting someone like you. You''re the only one like that in this class, so I hope you''re up for a challenge." Alex swallowed nervously and replied, "Yes, sir. I''ll do my best." "Good. I like a student who''s willing to learn," Oswin said with a nod. "Now, let''s see what you''re made of." Alex drew his wooden practice sword and took his position opposite Oswin. He could feel the eyes of the other students on him as he prepared for his first lesson. "Remember, the sword is an extension of your body," Oswin said, his own sword at the ready. "You must learn to control it as you would your own limbs. Now, come at me." Alex hesitated for a moment before launching himself forward, swinging his sword towards Oswin''s head. But the teacher was too fast, and he easily deflected the blow. Alex stumbled backwards, feeling foolish. "Again," Oswin commanded. For three hours, Alex struggled to keep up with Oswin''s expert instruction. He could feel his muscles aching and his frustration growing, but he refused to give up. He was determined to learn this skill, no matter how difficult it might be. After three hours, Oswin approached Alex with a smile. "Good effort, Alex. You have potential. That''s why Max was so angry, he envies the way you easily saw his opening," he said. "But you must work harder if you want to keep up with the other students. Sword arts are not a skill that can be mastered overnight." "Thank you, Master Oswin. I will do my best to keep up," said Alex as he bowed and left the courtyard. Oswin looked up at the darkening sky and murmured, "Master..." Alex felt both exhausted and exhilarated by the experience. As he made his way back to his dormitory, he couldn''t help but wonder what other secrets and challenges awaited him in this new world of swordplay and adventure. Chapter 20: Late for Class Alex''s heart pounded in his chest as he peeled his clothes from his sweat-drenched skin and climbed out of bed. The same nightmare had haunted him again. In the dream, he watched Govirdale burn to the ground, but he couldn''t fathom why he kept having this dream. He pushed it out of his mind for now; he had more immediate concerns, like not being late for Olana''s class. Checking the clock on his bedside table, Alex realized he had overslept. He scrambled to dress and gather his belongings, then raced out of his dormitory into the courtyard. The sun was already high in the sky, and he couldn''t afford to waste a moment. As he walked toward the training hall, Alex''s thoughts raced with anticipation and dread for the upcoming class. He knew it would be a grueling experience, as Olana was notorious for her rigorous training methods. Nevertheless, Alex was determined to prove himself a worthy heir and make her proud. While Wednesday was a study day for most students, the heirs had to attend Olana''s class, which lasted the entire morning until lunchtime. The routine was brutal, requiring them to push their bodies and minds to the limit. But Alex was willing to endure the pain and hardship to hone his skills and become the best heir he could be. Alex stepped into the vast training hall, his eyes immediately drawn to Olana, who commanded the room with her regal presence. She was already waiting for him and the other heirs, radiating power and confidence. Her long blonde hair flowed down her back in loose waves, and her piercing green eyes seemed to hold a sense of determination and strength that could shake anyone to their core. Despite her youth, she carried herself with the poise and confidence of a seasoned warrior, her sharp features giving her an almost ethereal appearance. As Alex approached, Olana greeted him with a nod. "Good morning, Alex," she said, her voice firm but not unkind. "You''re late." "I''m sorry," Alex replied, trying to catch his breath. "I overslept." Olana raised an eyebrow but didn''t say anything else. Instead, she gestured for Alex to take his place with the other heirs, who were already lined up and prepared for the start of the class. Emily, gave him a small nod of acknowledgment, but Samantha and Max ignored him altogether, their focus solely on Olana. With a sense of determination, Alex pushed his embarrassment aside and joined the others. Olana cleared her throat, silencing the room. "Good morning, heirs," she said, her voice carrying the weight of expectation. "Today, we will focus on controlling the power of the elements within you, as we did last time. But this time, you won''t be using any objects. This will not be easy, but it is essential to your development. I expect nothing less than your best effort. Let us begin." Alex took a deep breath, steadying himself for the challenge ahead. He knew that Olana''s training would be rigorous, but he was eager to prove himself and learn from the best. With his fellow heirs by his side, he was ready to face whatever trials lay ahead. As time passed, the frustration and disappointment amongst the heirs only grew, with each passing minute feeling like an eternity. Despite their intense efforts, nothing seemed to be working, and the energy within them remained dormant. Alex could sense the tension in the air, and the hopelessness that was slowly creeping in. Sweat poured down their foreheads, and they all looked exhausted. Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. Just when they thought that all was lost, a sudden gasp echoed through the hall. Max had managed to summon a small branch from his hand, and the other heirs watched in awe as he stared at his newfound power in amazement. A triumphant smile slowly spread across his face, and he reveled in the realization that he had accomplished what the others couldn''t. He felt superior to everyone. Max''s eyes sparkled with excitement as the small branch continued to grow from his hand, and the other heirs clapped and cheered in amazement. "Max, that''s incredible!" Samantha exclaimed. Emily stepped forward. "That was so cool, Max. Congratulations!" Max grinned, feeling a sense of pride welling up inside him. "Thanks, guys. I didn''t think it was possible, but here we are!" Olana stepped forward, her expression serious. "Well done, Max. But remember, this is only the beginning. You all have much to learn and control." The heirs nodded, their excitement tempered by the reminder of their training''s seriousness. They knew that they had a long way to go, but for now, they basked in the thrill of Max''s success. As the small gust of wind dissipated, Emily turned to her fellow heirs, a look of wonder etched on her face. She had finally tapped into her elemental power, and it felt exhilarating. The others congratulated her, but Alex couldn''t help feeling a twinge of envy. He had been so focused on his own efforts that he hadn''t even noticed Emily''s breakthrough until now. As the others congratulated Emily, Alex couldn''t help but feel genuinely happy for her. He knew how hard she had been working to unlock her elemental power, and he admired her dedication and perseverance. "Emily, that was amazing," he said, smiling warmly at her. Emily blushed at his words, feeling grateful for his kind encouragement. "Thank you, Alex," she replied, her voice filled with sincerity. Olana noticed the exchange and couldn''t help but smile. She knew that the bond between the heirs was essential for their success, and she was glad to see that they were supporting each other. "Well said, Alex," Olana said, nodding approvingly. "Remember, the journey to mastering your elemental powers is not a competition. You are all here to learn and grow together." Alex nodded, feeling reassured by Olana''s words. He knew that he needed to continue supporting his fellow heirs and work towards unlocking his own potential. With that in mind, he took a deep breath and refocused his attention on his training, determined to make progress. As the hours dragged on, Alex''s frustration grew by the minute. Despite his best efforts, he couldn''t seem to awaken his dormant elemental powers. Meanwhile, Samantha''s progress was rapid and impressive. With a small cry, a water bubble the size of a little fist shot out from her hand. The other heirs cheered and congratulated her, but Alex couldn''t help feeling a pang of jealousy. Olana sensed the tension in the room and stepped forward, her voice both stern and reassuring. "Remember, heirs, this isn''t a competition. Each of you will awaken your powers at your own pace. Don''t let jealousy or envy get in the way of your training." Emily noticed Alex''s troubled expression and asked, "Are you okay?" Alex forced a smile, trying to hide his disappointment. "Yeah, I''m fine." Emily''s eyes narrowed slightly, and she gave Alex a knowing look. "You don''t have to pretend with me. It''s okay to feel frustrated. We all do at times." Alex let out a sigh of relief, grateful for Emily''s understanding. "Thanks, Emily. It''s just hard seeing everyone else make progress while I''m still stuck." Emily put a hand on Alex''s shoulder. "Don''t worry. You''ll get there too. I believe in you." Alex smiled, feeling a warmth spread through him. With newfound hope, he turned his attention back to his training, determined to make progress and awaken his elemental powers. Chapter 21: King of the Sea Olana''s voice echoed through the classroom, ¡°Dear students, it¡¯s better if we conclude the lesson now before you all faint. Take a break, go grab some lunch, and then dive into your studies. Remember, people look up to you as the next big figures, but to achieve greatness, you need to keep learning and growing.¡± She flashed a caring smile at the class before turning towards Alex, ¡°Alex, don¡¯t dwell too much on today. You gave your best, and that''s what matters. Keep pushing yourself, and you''ll achieve your goals." Alex beamed back at her, grateful for her words of encouragement. "Thank you," he said softly. "No problem, now go grab some lunch," Olana said, patting him on the shoulder before turning to leave the classroom. As Alex made his way towards the locker room, Emily stood by the door, beaming at him. "Alex! Hurry up in there, today''s lunch is on me! I found a fantastic restaurant, and we can go together!" Alex''s face lit up, and he nodded eagerly before rushing inside. Inside, he found Max getting dressed. Seeing Alex, Max smiled and said, "Hey Alex, want to join me for lunch?" Alex''s heart sank as he remembered Max''s earlier coldness towards him when he entered the class late. His mind raced, trying to make sense of Max''s sudden change in behavior. After a few moments of hesitation, Alex responded, "Thanks for the invite, but I already have plans. Maybe next time." Max''s curiosity got the best of him, and he asked, "Plans? With who?" "Emily," Alex replied, hastily changing his shirt. "Where are you guys going?" Max inquired. "I don¡¯t know for sure. She said she found a very good restaurant and wanted to try it out," Alex said, grabbing his things to leave the locker room. As Alex made his way out, Max''s voice sounded behind him, "I like her, so I hope as my friend you can support me and my relationship with her when the time comes." The weight of Max''s words hung heavy in the air, and Alex stopped in his tracks. After a few moments of standing still, he continued walking without looking back at Max. Alex stepped out of the locker room to find Emily waiting for him. "Alex, come on, I''m starving!" she exclaimed. He was still lost in thought about the strange encounter with Max, but he quickly shook it off and replied, "Lead the way." As they walked out of the institute, they spotted Jiten shuffling towards them with a weary expression. Alex couldn''t resist the opportunity to prank him, so he snuck up behind Jiten and shouted, "Good morning, Jiten!" Jiten jumped in surprise, and Emily and Alex burst out laughing at his reaction. "Jiten, we''re grabbing lunch. Want to join us?" Emily asked, still chuckling. Jiten looked at them both wearily, but ultimately agreed. "Okay, I can go with you guys, but Alex, you''re paying for me," he said, half-joking. If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. Alex nodded, happy to treat his friend, and the three of them left the institute. The trio made their way down the street until they reached a grand building adorned with a statue of a shrimp. The restaurant''s sign read "King of the Sea." "A seafood restaurant? I bet this is very costly," Alex remarked. Jiten replied with a grimace, "Then prepare yourself to go broke." As they entered the restaurant, the sound of seagulls and waves greeted them, creating an immersive atmosphere that transported them to the seaside. The walls were decorated with paintings of marine life, and the smell of freshly cooked seafood filled the air. A friendly hostess greeted them and led them to a table with a view of the ocean. They browsed the menu, which featured an array of exotic seafood dishes, and placed their orders. As they waited for their food, Alex couldn''t help but marvel at the luxurious setting. This was a far cry from his humble upbringing in a small fishing village. Emily noticed his awe and asked, "What''s on your mind, Alex?" "It''s just that... I never thought I''d be able to afford to eat at a place like this," Alex admitted. Jiten chimed in, "Yeah, me neither. But we''re all here now, enjoying a meal together. That''s what matters." Emily nodded in agreement. "Exactly. It''s not about the money, it''s about the company you keep." Their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of their food. A platter of grilled octopus, a steaming bowl of clam chowder, and a plate of fried calamari were placed before them. As they dug in, the trio couldn''t help but moan in pleasure at the flavors exploding in their mouths. Each dish was expertly prepared, with a perfect balance of seasoning and texture. As they enjoyed their meal, Alex noticed that Jiten looked exhausted and asked him if everything was all right. "Sorry, dude, but I couldn''t sleep all night," Jiten replied. "That fucking noise kept me up, and I''m afraid I might go crazy." Alex chuckled and jokingly responded, "I guess you don''t need to be afraid of that happening." Jiten smiled at Alex''s response and added, "I promise you, if this continues, I will create a potion so strong that it will destroy that building!" Emily, intrigued by their conversation, asked, "Are you talking about the noise coming from the church facilities?" Jiten, still eating, nodded his head in agreement. "I''ve heard about that noise," Emily said. "They''ve been renovating the church for months now, and the construction noise has been unbearable." Alex frowned, "That''s not fair to the people living around the area. They should find a way to minimize the noise pollution." Jiten agreed, "Exactly, it''s been affecting our sleep, work, and mental health. It''s not something we can ignore." Emily nodded in agreement, "I heard that some people have already complained to the church authorities, but nothing seems to be working." Jiten looked around to make sure that no one was eavesdropping on their conversation and said, "I need to tell you something, and I know it might sound crazy, but I need you to believe me. Yesterday, I was very attentive to the noise, and it sounded like a distraction to cover the real noise of what''s happening inside the church. The sound was always the same, and I''m sure it came every time from the same spot, but there was one time it sounded later, and I heard something strange, like a cry." As Jiten spoke, Alex and Emily listened intently, their interest piqued by their friend''s strange revelation. "A cry?" Emily asked, her brow furrowed with concern. Jiten nodded, "Yes, like something crying or screaming in pain. It was faint, but I heard it. And it wasn''t coming from the construction site." Alex leaned in, "What do you think it could be?" "I have no idea," Jiten replied, "But it sounded like it was coming from there. I couldn''t pinpoint the exact location, but I know it wasn''t part of the renovation noise." Emily looked thoughtful, "We should investigate this further. Maybe we can find out what''s really going on there." Alex nodded, "But we need to be careful. We don''t want to get into any trouble." Jiten agreed, "Right. We should do some research and try to find out if anyone else has heard anything similar." As they finished their meal, the trio made a plan to gather information and investigate the mysterious noise. Chapter 22 - Master Oswin The trio finished their meal, and as they parted ways, they made a pact to explore the mysterious noise further. What secrets lay hidden within the walls of the church? They were determined to find out, but little did they know that their investigation would lead them down a dangerous and thrilling path. As Alex and Jiten walked back to the institute, they chatted about their plans for the day. Alex was relieved to hear that Jiten would be working on his teras anatomy homework, a subject that Alex found particularly difficult. "Hey, Jiten, do you think you could help me with that too?" he asked hopefully. "Of course, Alex," Jiten replied with a smile. "I''d be happy to help." Alex''s face lit up with gratitude. "Thanks, man. You''re a lifesaver." Jiten chuckled. "No problem, dude. I''ve got your back." As they reached the library, Alex and Jiten settled down at a table and got to work. With Jiten''s guidance, Alex was able to breeze through his homework in no time. As they finished up, Jiten mentioned that he had to leave to meet his father. "Okay, man. I''ll see you later," Alex said with a wave. "Take care, Alex," Jiten replied with a smile as he headed out. Suddenly, Alex felt a pang in his heart as he realized that after his parents died, he had no one waiting for him at home. He longed for companionship, but he didn''t know how to change his situation. Lost in thought, Alex packed up his things and left the library. As he walked out of the institute, someone called out to him from behind. It was Oswin Hart, the sword fighting instructor. "Mr. Stern, where are you going? It''s time to train with your sword," Oswin said, his voice booming with authority. Alex gulped as he remembered the intensity of Oswin''s training sessions. However, at the same time, he felt relieved that he wouldn''t be going home to an empty apartment. "Uh, sure thing, Master Oswin," Alex replied, hoping his voice didn''t betray his anxiety. Alex stood in the training yard, his sword at the ready as Oswin Hart approached. The older man wore a simple tunic and trousers, his greying hair pulled back in a messy bun. He carried a wooden sword, which he swung experimentally before settling into a ready stance. "Let''s begin," he said, his voice gruff. The two men circled each other warily, waiting for an opening. Oswin made the first move, lunging forward with his sword. Alex blocked the blow and retaliated with a series of quick strikes, but Oswin easily dodged them. They continued to spar, each one testing the other''s defenses. As they fought, Oswin offered advice and corrections. "Keep your stance wider," he instructed. "Don''t lock your elbows. Follow through with your strikes." Alex tried to remember all of Oswin''s teachings, but his mind felt foggy. His arms ached, and sweat poured down his face. He stumbled, and Oswin took advantage of the opening, landing a solid blow on Alex''s shoulder. The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation. "Ow!" Alex grunted, feeling a sharp pain shoot through his arm. "Keep your guard up," Oswin chided. "Don''t let your focus waver. You can''t afford to make mistakes." Alex had always been fascinated by swordsmanship, and he was lucky to have Oswin Hart as his instructor. Oswin was a burly man with a thick beard and piercing blue eyes. He was an expert in combat, and Alex was eager to learn from him. As Alex drew his sword, Oswin stepped back and observed him. "The key to swordsmanship is not just strength, but also technique," he said. "A skilled swordsman can defeat a stronger opponent with the right moves and tactics." With that, Oswin launched into a series of movements, each precise and calculated. He showed Alex how to block incoming attacks and how to strike at his opponent''s weak spots. They practiced for hours, sweat pouring down their faces. "Remember, Alex, speed and accuracy are important, but so is timing," Oswin said, taking a break to wipe his brow. "You need to anticipate your opponent''s moves and be ready to strike at the right moment." Alex nodded, trying to catch his breath. His arms ached, but he knew he had to keep going. He wanted to become a master swordsman like Oswin. As the training session continued, Oswin gave Alex more advice. "Don''t be too predictable, Alex. Your opponent will quickly catch on to your moves if you use the same ones repeatedly. Mix it up and keep them guessing." They continued to practice, each movement more complex than the last. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Oswin called a halt to the session. "Good work," he said, his voice gruff but approving. "You''re getting better." Alex couldn''t help but feel a sense of pride at the praise. Despite the pain and exhaustion, he had managed to hold his own against Oswin, a seasoned warrior with years of experience. "Thanks," he said, his voice hoarse. "I couldn''t have done it without your guidance." Oswin clapped him on the back, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "Remember, sword fighting isn''t just about physical strength. It''s about mental fortitude too. You need to be focused, disciplined, and resilient if you want to succeed." Alex nodded, feeling a sense of clarity wash over him. After an exhausting training session, Alex lay on the ground, gasping for air. Oswin, his sword-fighting instructor, towered over him with arms crossed, a stern expression on his face. "You''ve got potential, kid. In two days, you''ve learned what a normal kid your age would learn in a year," Oswin gruffly commented. "But you need to work on your form, stamina, and focus." Alex nodded weakly, too exhausted to argue. The intense training session had him dodging Oswin''s lightning-fast strikes and trying to land a hit of his own, leaving him humbled. "Come on, let''s get some dinner. You need some protein after a workout like that," Oswin said, offering Alex a hand up. Alex was surprised by the invitation to dinner. He had never had dinner with Oswin before, and he wasn''t sure if it was appropriate. Nevertheless, he was too hungry to care. As they walked towards the cafeteria, Alex noticed the difference in the atmosphere. Unlike the lively and bustling lunchtime, there were more empty tables and older students and staff members engrossed in their studies. While walking, Oswin offered some advice, "You''re a good kid, Alex. But you''ve got a lot to learn. You need to be faster, stronger, and smarter if you want to survive in this world." ¡°Thank you master Oswin¡± Alex responded. After Alex''s response, Oswin''s expression softened. He looked at Alex with a mixture of admiration and concern. "You have talent, Alex. More than I''ve seen in a long time," Oswin said, his gruff voice low. "But you don''t understand. I can''t be your master. You''re way too talented for me to know how to teach you properly. Normal training won''t be enough for you." Alex''s face fell, disappointment washing over him. He had looked up to Oswin, admired him as a mentor, and now Oswin was telling him that he couldn''t teach him? It was a blow to Alex''s confidence. "Why not? You''re the best swordsman in the continent," Alex said, his voice laced with confusion. Oswin sighed, downing a cup of wine before speaking again. "Look at me, kid," he said, rolling up his sleeve to reveal a massive scar on his shoulder. Alex recoiled at the sight of the violent wound. "Unfortunately, there are people stronger than me out there," Oswin continued. "I can''t teach you how to fight them. You''ll need someone better than me." Alex''s mind raced, trying to process Oswin''s words. He had never considered that there could be someone stronger than Oswin. Chapter 23: Arcane class Alex woke up to the sound of birds chirping outside his window. He stretched his limbs, feeling a slight ache from the intense training with Oswin the day before. He couldn''t believe how much he had learned in such a short time. But today was an even more exciting day - his first arcane lesson. For years, Alex had dreamt of becoming a mage, and now finally, he had the chance to learn the craft from some of the most experienced mages in the kingdom. He got dressed, feeling a mix of nervousness and anticipation. As he made his way to the academy, he couldn''t help but think of the legends and tales he had heard about the feats of the great mages of old. He wondered if he had what it takes to become one of them. As Alex entered the classroom, he was immediately struck by its grandeur. The room was much larger than he had expected, with high ceilings and tall windows that let in a soft, diffuse light. Rows of wooden desks were arranged in a semi-circle around a raised platform where the teacher''s desk was placed, complete with a towering bookshelf and an array of strange-looking artifacts. The walls were adorned with intricate tapestries depicting various magical creatures and symbols, their colors muted by age and dust. The air was heavy with the scent of incense, which seemed to come from several braziers placed strategically around the room. Alex could feel the energy in the air, a palpable hum that seemed to vibrate through his bones. It was clear that this was no ordinary classroom. As Alex entered the classroom, he scanned the room for a familiar face. His eyes landed on Samantha, who sat in the front row, looking every bit the noblewoman she was. Her long, blonde hair was pulled back into a neat bun, and her emerald-green eyes sparkled as she flipped through a leather-bound book. Alex had always found Samantha captivating, but he knew better than to try and strike up a conversation with her. She seemed to exist in a world apart from everyone else, lost in her own thoughts and interests. Feeling a tug on his sleeve, Alex turned to see his friend Jiten sitting in the row behind him, buried in a thick tome. Jiten looked up and gave a small smile when he saw Alex, but then went back to his reading. Alex slid into the seat next to him, not bothering to ask for permission. "Hey, Jiten," he said, grinning. "Ready for our first arcane lesson?" Jiten looked up from his book, his expression one of boredom. "I suppose," he said, closing the book with a sigh. "dude, is everything okay?" Alex asked, concerned. Jiten sighed, running a hand through his hair. "No, not really. I''m having trouble finding the last ingredient for the sleep-smoke potion, and I hate arcane magic. It''s just not my thing fire boy." Alex nodded sympathetically. "I get it, magic can be tough. But hey, you''ll figure it out. And who knows, maybe you''ll even find your own unique way of using magic," Alex said, patting Jiten on the back. As Jiten seemed lost in thought, the professor, Cecilia White, entered the room. She was a stern-looking woman with graying hair, and she immediately commanded attention as she stepped forward to address the class. "Good afternoon, students," she began, her voice firm and authoritative. "I am Cecilia White, a member of the board and your arcane professor for the year. I do not tolerate any nonsense in my class. You speak only when spoken to, and you do what I tell you to do when I tell you to do it." A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. Alex couldn''t help but feel a shiver run down his spine at her words. He knew that this was going to be a challenging year As Cecilia White began her lecture, the room fell silent. Her voice was commanding and had a way of holding the students'' attention. "Magic is not a toy, it''s a powerful force that must be respected," she said, her eyes scanning the room. "It''s based on the manipulation of mana, a type of energy that flows through all things, living and non-living. Those who have the innate ability to manipulate mana are known as mages." The students listened intently as Cecilia explained how mages must train to develop their abilities and control mana effectively. "Mana is a finite resource," she warned. "If you exhaust your mana reserves, you risk negative consequences." She went on to explain that different types of spells require different amounts of mana to cast, and that more powerful spells require more mana. "The more skilled a mage is, the more mana they can channel and control, and the more complex spells they can cast, and some mages have natural affinities for certain types of magic, which allows them to cast spells more easily or with greater power." she said. Cecilia White''s voice grew stern as she addressed her students, "Let me make this clear, casting spells is not child''s play. It requires discipline, focus, and a deep understanding of the forces at play. Magic is not a toy to be used carelessly or recklessly. The consequences of your actions can be severe and far-reaching." She looked each of them in the eye before continuing, "Now, listen up. Verbal incantations and nonverbal incantations are powerful tools that can be used to manifest your desires, but they must be performed with precision and intention. Spell components can be tricky to master, and the use of the wrong ingredient can have disastrous consequences. Channeling mana requires mental fortitude and control, and any slip-up can result in catastrophic effects. And, let me warn you, rune casting is not for the faint of heart. One mistake in the arrangement of the symbols, and you can be dealing with an entirely different outcome than what you intended." She paused for emphasis, "And don''t even get me started on enchantment. The responsibility of imbuing an object with magical properties is not to be taken lightly. You must be sure that you have chosen the right object, the right spell, and that you have the right intentions." Cecilia''s eyes blazed with determination as she concluded, "I expect each of you to take your studies seriously. There is no room for carelessness or recklessness in the practice of magic. The consequences of your actions can be devastating, both for yourselves and for those around you. So, keep your wits about you and always be mindful of the power you wield." Jiten sat alongside Alex, his quill poised over his parchment as he tried to keep up with Cecilia''s lecture on spellcasting. However, his mind kept drifting away from the lecture and toward the potion method he had been studying for the sleeping potion. As Cecilia spoke about the various ways to cast spells, Jiten''s fascination with the runes used in potion-making grew stronger. He couldn''t help but wonder if there was a rune that could control evaporation during the process of turning liquids into vapor. Without realizing it, his hand shot up, and he blurted out, "Excuse me, wise teacher, but is there a rune that can control evaporation?" Cecilia paused mid-sentence, her eyes narrowing as she turned to face Jiten. She could feel her annoyance bubbling up inside her. She had been teaching magic for decades, and she had little patience for students who interrupted her lectures with questions. "Young man," she said sternly, "while there may not be a specific ''evaporation rune,'' there are certainly spells and runes that can control the elements, including water. But I expect you to pay closer attention to my lectures and not disrupt the class with irrelevant questions. Do you understand, Mr. Jitendrasingh Feller?" Jiten looked at Alex and whispered, "How in the hell does she know my name?" Jiten felt his face flush with embarrassment as the other students turned to look at him. He nodded quickly, trying to show Cecilia that he understood and was sorry for his interruption. Chapter 24: Lets Try Fire Then The lecture continued, and Cecilia proceeded to explain the next set of spells the students would be learning. "Before we delve into more advanced spells like Arcane Missile and Mana Shield, we''ll start with a practical exercise in levitation," she announced. "Today, we will channel our mana into a bowl of water and see who can levitate the greatest amount of water." As Cecilia explained the exercise, Alex''s stress levels began to rise. Since a young age, he had been fascinated with magic. Back in Arindale, he had created his own grimoire filled with simple beginner magic spells like Spark and Minor Heal that he had copied from the library. However, while he excelled in arcane spells involving fire, he struggled immensely with water-based magic. Every time his mana came into contact with water, it became highly unstable. As everyone prepared for the exercise, Alex tried to calm his nerves. After a few seconds, he spotted one of the bowls of water on the teacher''s desk and quickly grabbed it, hurrying back to his seat. Determined, he took a deep breath and focused on his goal. He knew he needed to form a bowl made of mana at the bottom of the bowl and lift it up. Just as Alex was about to begin, a commotion erupted in the classroom. He turned his head and his eyes widened in astonishment. Samantha, a fellow student, had managed to create a large floating ball of water. All eyes were on her as she effortlessly levitated the ball of water with finesse and skill. The classroom buzzed with excitement and admiration for Samantha''s display of talent. Applause filled the room, except for Jiten, who stood in his seat with crossed arms. As the applause died down, all eyes turned to Alex. Being an elemental heir, the pressure on him to demonstrate his own strength was immense. He could feel the weight of their expectations, but he refused to let it overpower him. With a renewed determination, he focused his thoughts and channeled his mana into the bowl of water. However, to his dismay, the mana and water combination became highly frenetic, causing the surface of the bowl to tremble before abruptly stopping. The levitation spell had failed. Laughter and mocking whispers filled the classroom, even Cecilia couldn''t resist a subtle smile. "Not everyone can be talented. It''s a normal occurrence in the world of spell casting," she said, causing the mockeries to gain volume. The demeaning comments and ridicule from his classmates only added salt to Alex''s wounds. Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. However, amidst the laughter, Jiten stood up from his seat, clapping loudly. The unexpected support caught everyone''s attention. "A very impressive demonstration, colleague Samantha," he said with a determined tone. "You are clearly proficient with arcanic magic involving water. If you''re willing, let''s see your prowess with fire arcanic magic, like Spark!" The classroom fell silent, and all eyes turned to Jiten. His words carried a challenge, not only to Samantha but to the entire class. It was a bold move, but Jiten couldn''t bear to see his friend being belittled. He believed in Alex''s potential and wanted to give him the opportunity to shine. Taken aback by Jiten''s unexpected support, Samantha hesitated for a moment. She had always been hailed as the most talented when it came to arcanic magic, and her parents and teachers constantly praised her abilities. But she had a secret, her manipulation of arcanic fire magic was terrible. No matter how much she trained, she struggled even with simple spells like sparks. Jiten''s challenge put her in a difficult position, and she felt a surge of irritation. Her usual composed and noble demeanor slipped, replaced by a flicker of fury. Before Samantha could respond, Cecilia White interjected, her voice firm. "Mr. Feller, this is the second time you have disrupted my class. I do not allow the use of fire magic, as it can be dangerous." However, Jiten intercepted Cecilia''s remark, maintaining his composure. "I sincerely apologize, wise teacher, but I believe that an injustice is being done in this exercise. Allow me to clarify: Samantha is highly skilled in arcanic water magic, while Alex Stern here is the heir of fire. It''s only fair that we adjust the challenge to balance their respective affinities. Instead of using water, let''s have them cast the levitation spell on a bowl. The one who can levitate the bowl higher wins!" Jiten paused, casting a smile at Samantha, his intention clear. "Do you accept the challenge?" Seething with anger and feeling the weight of Jiten''s words, Samantha locked eyes with him. Her gaze could kill, but her response was a cold and determined affirmation. "I''m ready. Tell me when he is." Jiten, happy with Samantha''s acceptance, turned to Alex with a smile, placing his hand on his shoulder. "It''s time, fire boy. Show them they''re wrong!" Perplexed by everything that was happening, Alex couldn''t understand why Jiten had set up this challenge. He knew Samantha was better at casting levitation spells. Frustrated, he said, "Jiten, what have you done? I can''t win this. She is better than me at casting levitation. What made you think I could win?!" Listening to his friend''s response, Jiten realized the gravity of his misjudgment. He had acted out of anger, driven by a protective instinct towards Alex. Composing himself, he leaned closer to Alex, whispering with genuine remorse, "Yikes, sorry, bro. My bad." Not wanting his friend to shoulder the burden of guilt, as Jiten had only sought to shield him, Alex let out a weary sigh. With unwavering determination, he turned to Samantha, his eyes shining bright. "Whenever you''re ready." Chapter 25: A Lesson Learned Cecilia White observed Samantha''s confident demeanor, her mastery of the levitation spell evident in her poised stance. It seemed obvious to the master rank mage that Samantha would easily outperform Alex in this friendly competition. However, a flicker of uncertainty clouded Cecilia''s mind. What did Jiten see in Alex that warranted such unwavering trust? With a composed expression, Cecilia addressed the class, her voice carrying authority. "So, this competition will be a friendly one. The rules are simple: whoever touches the ceiling first with the bowls casting levitate wins." Alex and Samantha stood before the class, each with an identical bowl in front of them, ready to cast the levitation spell. Cecilia counted to three, and both students simultaneously cast the spell. Alex''s first attempt faltered, causing his bowl to wobble and lose stability. Meanwhile, Samantha remained calm and focused, connecting deeply with the spell. Her bowl levitated steadily, rising uniformly until it was a mere 30 centimeters away from the ceiling. The class erupted in applause, acknowledging Samantha''s mastery of the levitation spell. Samantha, pleased with the response, turned her gaze towards Jiten, expecting to relish in his disappointment. However, to her surprise, she found Jiten wearing a grim smile, and her attention shifted to Alex''s bowl. It was incredibly unstable, threatening to plummet to the ground at any moment. Confusion and frustration clouded Samantha''s mind. Why was Alex''s bowl still in the race? Realizing the precariousness of her situation, Samantha hastily gathered her focus and channeled even more energy into her spell. She could see Alex''s bowl inching closer, and panic welled up within her. Determined not to lose in front of everyone, Samantha pushed herself further, ignoring the strain on her mana. Her own bowl became increasingly unstable, teetering on the brink of collapse. Samantha felt her mana teetering on the edge of disconnection, but her resolve remained unyielding. Summoning every ounce of determination within her, she surged forward, pushing against the limits of her magical abilities. With unwavering focus, she willed her bowl to surpass its previous height, defying the odds. The atmosphere in the room grew taut as Samantha''s bowl hovered mere millimeters away from the ceiling, her face contorted in unwavering concentration. And then, at last, with a gentle touch, her bowl made contact with the ceiling, sealing her hard-fought victory. Suddenly, a resounding clash echoed through the room. It was Alex''s bowl, colliding with the ceiling. Cheers erupted from the class, celebrating Samantha''s victory. Jiten approached his friend, a proud smile on his face. "Alex, you were incredible. Congratulations!" This novel''s true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there. Alex returned Jiten''s smile and quipped, "That was a close one, right?" Before Jiten could respond, Samantha approached him with a mix of anger and triumph in her voice. "Are you happy now?" Her words triggered laughter from the onlookers, directed at Jiten. Unfazed by the laughter, Jiten''s smile persisted. "I am genuinely delighted. You see, I happen to be quite skilled in the art of potion-making myself. Ever since my early years, I have been fervently concocting potions. If I were to engage in a competition with someone who was new to the craft, and the outcome proved to be so closely contested, I couldn''t in good conscience claim it as a true victory. However, there is no need to worry. Allow me to extend my heartfelt congratulations on your well-deserved triumph." Jiten''s words rang with sincerity, and as his hands came together in applause, it reflected his genuine appreciation. Samantha seethed with anger, her frustration mounting to the point where she felt an intense urge to strike Jiten. But before her rage could find expression, Cecilia White''s commanding voice intervened. "This is enough for today," she asserted, her tone unwavering. "Go now, the class has come to a close. Study and practice safely." Her words, firm and authoritative, brought a sense of finality to the situation, leaving no room for further confrontation. With a mixture of emotions swirling within the classroom, the students began to disperse, their minds filled with thoughts of the day''s events. Samantha''s victory remained intact, yet her encounter with Jiten had left a bitter taste in her mouth. "Jiten, let''s have lunch. I''m famished," Alex exclaimed, clutching his stomach dramatically. Now seated in the bustling cafeteria, the aroma of delicious food wafting through the air, Alex couldn''t help but notice Samantha and her entourage of noble girls sitting a few tables behind Jiten. Samantha''s glares in Jiten''s direction were as frequent as the passing lunch trays. "Looks like you''ve made yourself a brand-new enemy, my dear friend," Alex quipped, struggling to stifle his laughter. Jiten, undeterred by the brewing feud, continued devouring his meal with gusto. He paused for a moment, a mischievous sparkle in his eyes, and replied, "Ah, it''s a timeless conundrum, fire boy. The beauty and the craziness often go hand in hand, like the tangled vines of an enchanted forest." The absurdity of the comment caused Alex to burst into laughter, nearly spilling his drink. The lighthearted banter between the two friends continued as they enjoyed their lunch. After teasing each other, Alex brought up the topic of their upcoming physical training session. "Hey, Jiten, what do you say we spice things up during our physical training?" Alex suggested mischievously, a playful glint in his eyes. Jiten raised an eyebrow, intrigued by his friend''s proposal. "Oh, really? And how do you propose we do that?" Alex leaned in closer, a sly smile spreading across his face. "Well, we could unleash our hidden swordsmanship talents and engage in an epic duel of blades!" Jiten shook his head, declining the offer. "No can do, my friend. Firstly, I''m terrible at sword arts, and secondly, physical training is optional, not mandatory. If you feel like going home and getting some rest, you''re free to do so. As for me, a whole new world has opened up after this class. I believe I can finally perfect the smoking sleeping potion by using runes to control the evaporation process. So, it''s a big no-no for me." Chapter 26: The Way of the Blade As Alex bid his farewell to Jiten, thoughts of taking a break and resting for the day filled his mind. His body ached from Oswin''s rigorous sword lessons, and the allure of an evening of relaxation was tempting. Lost in his fantasies, Alex began walking towards the institute''s exit, only to be startled by the sight of Oswin leaning against the exit, observing everyone who passed by. An instinctive wave of apprehension washed over Alex as he realized Oswin had the power to change the minds of those considering skipping the physical training. Without a second thought, Alex swiftly turned on his heels, seeking refuge down the nearest hallway. With each step, a sense of safety slowly returned to him. However, just as he began to calm down, a hand rested on his back, and a familiar voice rang out, "Alex, finally! Let''s go, it''s time to train with your sword." Alex''s face fell with a discouraged expression as he asked, "How did you find me?" Oswin pointed at Alex with an incredulous look, as if stating the obvious. "How could I not find you? Your aura is ridiculously distinctive. Stop wasting time and come on." Reluctantly, Alex followed Oswin towards the courtyard designated for sword arts classes. As they approached, a commotion reached their ears, drawing their attention. A crowd had gathered in a circle, centered around two students engaged in a wooden sword duel. One wore a blue uniform, indicating a second-year student, with a bronze medal adorning his chest denoting a low adept rank. The other, who seemed to be dominating the fight, wore a white uniform like Alex''s and possessed a silver apprentice rank medal alongside a medal depicting a tree¡ªa mark of being an heir of an element. Alex''s eyes widened with amazement as he watched Max skillfully hold his ground against an opponent of higher rank. Oswin glanced at Alex and urged him, "Come on, stop wasting time." Taking a deep breath, Alex shook off his awe and joined Oswin in finding an empty space within the courtyard. Oswin settled down, indicating for Alex to get ready and assume his sword stance. Oswin, satisfied with their session, instructed Alex to return the equipment to its proper place. As Alex diligently carried out the task, he couldn''t help but notice Max engaged in an intense conversation with Oswin. Intrigued, he quietly approached, eager to catch snippets of their discussion. "Master Oswin, I implore you," Max pleaded earnestly, his voice filled with determination. "Take me under your wing and impart upon me the wisdom of the blade." Oswin regarded Max with a measured gaze before responding, "I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I must decline. Seek another mentor who can guide you on your path." Max was taken aback by the rejection and frustration seeped into his voice. "Why do you choose Alex over me? I know without a doubt that my skills surpass his!" A mischievous smile tugged at the corners of Oswin''s lips as he replied, "Indeed, you possess great talent, but in terms of untapped potential, you still have a ways to go. Besides, I am not Alex''s master." Max''s heart sank, wounded by the realization that his abilities alone were not enough to sway Oswin''s decision. Anger simmered within him, and he retorted through clenched teeth, "In three months'' time, a competition will be held. I will show you and everyone else why I am superior to Alex. And when I emerge victorious, you will have no choice but to accept me as your student." Alex, overhearing the exchange, felt a mix of relief and intrigue. He knew Oswin well enough to understand that such a bet would never be taken lightly. Oswin, his eyes glinting with amusement, decided to set some terms of his own, flipping the wager on its head. "Very well. But let me establish some conditions. Should you lose, you shall renounce the sword forever. And every time our paths cross, you will maintain a distance of at least ten feet between us." Max''s countenance brightened with a newfound confidence as he extended his hand, sealing the agreement with a firm handshake. "Deal!" Alex stood in disbelief, realizing the magnitude of the challenge that lay ahead. His mind echoed with a single thought, "I''m in trouble." "What have you done? I can''t defeat Max! You saw how effortlessly he bested the older students earlier," Alex exclaimed, his voice tinged with panic, as Max departed from their presence. Oswin placed a reassuring hand on Alex''s shoulder, his gaze steady and confident. "Alex, calm down. I know you may feel overwhelmed, but remember, you have immense talent. We still have three whole months to prepare. That''s plenty of time to hone your skills. Now, go, eat, and rest. Tomorrow, you have classes." Chapter 27: A Chance for Redemption As the morning sunlight filtered through the windows, Alex hurried to the potions class with Professor Klaus. He couldn''t shake off the nervousness that lingered from the last potions class, where he and Jiten were unceremoniously kicked out by the professor. Determined to prove himself, Alex was ready to show Professor Klaus that he was not a useless student who only caused trouble. Upon entering the classroom, Alex noticed Jiten with dark circles under his eyes. Concerned, he approached his friend, who revealed that he had made a significant breakthrough in perfecting the evaporation sleeping potion the previous night. Before Alex could inquire further, Professor Klaus strode into the classroom, his presence commanding attention. Upon seeing Jiten and Alex, a sneer formed on Klaus''s face as he began the class. "Good morning, class. Today was meant to be a theoretical class, but I felt it was important to examine your skills. So, today, all of you will be evaluated," Klaus declared with a grim tone. He continued, "You will be tasked with concocting the potion you learned in the last class." Realizing that he and Jiten had been absent from the previous class due to their dismissal, panic surged through Alex. He turned to Jiten, who was fast asleep, oblivious to the impending examination. Alex''s body ached from the physical training with Oswin, and he felt ill-prepared for this unknown potion. Professor Klaus held up a flask, showcasing an example of the endurance potion they were expected to create. It had a yellowish appearance. "This examination will be done in pairs. You have until the end of the class to produce the best endurance potion. The pair with the best potion will receive an A, while the worst will receive an F. Now, begin!" As Klaus finished speaking, students around Alex started bustling, gathering ingredients and getting to work. Alex, however, was completely lost. He attempted to wake Jiten from his slumber. "Bro, I need your help. You can''t sleep now. We''re in the middle of an examination. We have to make an endurance potion by the end of class." Jiten remained fast asleep, his head resting on the table. In his sleep, he murmured, "Alex, we have plenty of time. It''s just an endurance potion..." Alex grew even more anxious witnessing his friend''s nonchalant attitude. Time continued to pass, and Alex remained clueless about what to do. He glanced at Professor Klaus, who wore a smug smile while observing his predicament. Frustrated, Alex toyed with the idea of seeking guidance from the teacher. However, seeing Klaus revel in his struggles, he abandoned the thought. This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author''s work. Meanwhile, other students began finishing their potions, diligently transferring them into flasks. Panic gripped Alex tighter as the situation worsened. "Last ten minutes, everyone! Good luck!" Klaus''s words struck Alex''s heart like a spear. With hope dwindling, Alex felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to find Jiten awake and alert. "Fire boy, thanks for letting me sleep. We''re a bit short on time, but we''ll manage. Go and distract Klaus while I work on the potion," Jiten said. Relieved by Jiten''s return, Alex expressed his gratitude. "Thanks, Jiten! Are you sure you can handle it?" Jiten looked at Alex, confusion in his eyes. "Alex, it''s an endurance potion. I can do it with my eyes closed. Now, go and distract Klaus." Alex nodded, taking a deep breath, and approached Professor Klaus. "Professor Klaus, may I have a word?" he asked, mustering as much humility as he could. Klaus looked at Alex, his disdain evident. "What do you want, student Alex?" Alex felt Klaus''s animosity but pressed on. "Professor, I''m here to apologize for my behavior in your previous class. Since that day, I''ve felt remorseful every day for being so disrespectful in the presence of a true potion master." Klaus''s chest puffed with pride, visibly affected by Alex''s words. Seizing the moment, Alex continued, "Professor, if you could ever find it in your merciful heart to forgive me, I dream that one day a master like you would guide me in the world of potion making." "Student Alex, all students are treated the same by me. Now, the time is up. Everyone, bring me your potions," Klaus declared, ending the examination. Alex''s mind raced with worry. Was the time Jiten had enough to complete the potion? As he anxiously scanned the room, Alex spotted Jiten holding a flask with a glowing paper attached, displaying both their names. But what puzzled Alex was the transparency of their potion. While all the other potions were a vibrant yellow, theirs stood out with its clarity, it looked like water. Klaus began analyzing each potion, one by one. When he reached Alex and Jiten''s flask, his expression turned to one of shock. "Congratulations, students Alex and Jitendrasingh. You have won this evaluation. This is one of the best endurance potions I have ever seen." Alex''s eyes widened in disbelief, glancing at Jiten, who stood calmly as if it were no big deal. Happiness swelled within Alex. It felt like a chance to reconcile with the teacher who had despised him. As Klaus presented them with their prize, two flasks containing a red liquid, Alex prepared to express his gratitude. However, before he could speak, Jiten interjected, "What am I supposed to do with this weak healing potion?" Silence engulfed the room as all eyes turned to Jiten. He had just insulted a potion made by potion expert in front of the entire class. The audacity of his words left everyone stunned. Jiten returned the potion to Klaus, who was too shocked to respond. With an abrupt dismissal, Klaus ushered everyone out. Chapter 28: Guys, we have a huge problem! As Alex and Jiten made their way to the cafeteria, their minds buzzed with the success of their potions class. They found a spot to sit and enjoy their lunch when their attention was captured by a stunning brunette. She wore a white uniform with two medals on her chest: a bronze one with the apprentice emblem and a gold one with the air symbol. Her long hair flowed gracefully down her back, and her captivating green eyes drew them in. With a tray of food in hand, she approached their table and chose to join them. "Hey guys!" Emily greeted, her smile radiant as she took a seat beside them. Jiten returned the greeting, matching her smile. "Hey, Emily! How''s it going?" Alex nodded in agreement, echoing Jiten''s words. "Good to see you, Emily. Grab a seat." Emily''s eyes glimmered with curiosity as she leaned in. "It''s been good, but I''ve been dying to know if there''s been any progress with that noisy warehouse behind your house, Jiten. Any updates?" Jiten leaned back in his chair, a spark of excitement in his voice. "Well, there hasn''t been significant progress yet, but I have a feeling I''m getting closer to successfully brewing the evaporation sleeping potion." Emily''s face lit up with genuine enthusiasm. "That''s amazing, Jiten! I have no doubt you''ll crack it soon." Curiosity then shifted towards Alex as Emily turned to him, a playful glimmer in her eye. "So, Alex, have you completed the homework for Teras Anatomy?" Caught off guard, Alex hesitated for a moment, contemplating his response. "Um, well... actually..." Jiten seized the opportunity to interject, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "Oh, come on, Emily. You know Alex and his procrastination skills. Lucky for him, I took charge and helped him out. So, he''s covered!" Emily couldn''t help but burst into laughter, finding Jiten''s remark highly amusing. "Is that so, Alex? Looks like you have Jiten to thank for saving you!" Joining in the laughter, Alex appreciated the light-hearted banter and camaraderie between the trio. "Yeah, it seems I owe him one this time. Thanks, sleeping beauty." Jiten, taken aback by Alex''s remark, nearly spilled his drink in surprise. Emily, noticing the commotion, turned to Jiten with a quizzical expression. "What happened, Jiten? Did something interesting occur in your potion class?" Alex couldn''t resist seizing the opportunity to playfully tease his friend. With a mischievous grin, he chimed in, "Well, let''s just say that our esteemed ''Mr. Potion Master'' here came dangerously close to receiving an F in the examination. If it weren''t for my quick thinking and assistance, he might not have made it." Jiten''s face turned slightly red as he sputtered in protest. "Hey now, let''s not exaggerate, Alex. I was just... momentarily distracted." Emily, thoroughly intrigued, leaned in closer. "Come on, Jiten, spill the details. What happened in that potion class?" Reluctantly, Jiten began recounting the story of how he had fallen asleep during the examination, leaving Alex on his own. As he narrated the events with a hint of embarrassment, Emily and Alex exchanged amused glances, thoroughly entertained by the tale. Emily burst into laughter, unable to contain herself. "Oh, Jiten, you never cease to surprise us! Falling asleep during an examination? That''s priceless!" Joining in the laughter, Alex couldn''t help but tease Jiten a little further. "Well, at least you can rely on your exceptional sleeping skills, Jiten. Who knows, maybe that''ll come in handy one day." Jiten playfully rolled his eyes, realizing he was outnumbered in this friendly banter. "Alright, alright, you two. Let''s hurry so we aren''t late for Teras Anatomy." If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. Alex smiled and said, "Let''s hurry before he falls asleep." Alex, Emily, and even Jiten, who was the target of the joke, laughed as they got up from their seats to head to the Teras Anatomy class. They arrived in the classroom and found their seats. Emily chose to sit in the middle, positioning herself between Alex and Jiten. It was a strategic move to ensure they didn''t engage in too much conversation during the class. As they settled into their seats, the room filled with anticipation for the lesson. Just then, Professor Lucy Turner entered the classroom in her usual clumsy manner, struggling to balance a heavy-looking paper box in her hands. The students watched with curiosity as Professor Turner carefully placed the box on her desk, a mischievous smile playing on her lips. She turned to face the class, her quirky personality filling the room. "Good afternoon, everyone!" Professor Turner greeted, her voice filled with enthusiasm. "I hope you''re all ready for an exciting lesson today." Jiten, unable to contain his curiosity, raised his hand and asked, "Professor, what''s in the box?" Professor Turner''s eyes twinkled as she looked at Jiten. With a playful grin, she reached into the box and retrieved a jewel-like crystal stone. Holding it up for everyone to see, she explained, "Today, we will be learning how to identify the quality of Teras Cores." The students leaned forward, their interest piqued by the mention of Teras Cores. Professor Turner continued, "Teras Cores are special crystals that possess unique properties. They are found inside every tera and are known to hold immense energy within them. These cores are used in advanced spells and have significant applications in the field of medicine and potion making. In some regions, they were even used as currency. I''m certain that Professor Harrow has taught you about Tera grades and the threat levels they represent. The power of the core is related to the grade of the tera." Alex, intrigued by the subject, raised his hand and asked, "How can we determine the quality of a Teras Core?" Professor Turner smiled at Alex''s question. "Excellent question! Identifying the quality of a Teras Core requires a keen eye and knowledge of the specific characteristics to look for. We''ll be examining things like color, clarity, and internal patterns. By analyzing these factors, we can determine the grade and potential power of the core." The class engaged in a hands-on activity, as Professor Turner distributed four different Teras Cores to each student. She guided them through the process of analyzing and comparing the cores, discussing their observations and making assessments about their quality. Once the exercise concluded, Professor Turner took out a cube filled with intricately engraved runes, about the size of an orange. She held it up for the class to see. "Attention, everyone. This is a Mimic Cube," she explained. "When activated, it can reproduce the sound of anything that has been recorded. In this case, I have recorded the call of a nature tera. Listen up!" With a flicker of anticipation in the air, Lucy channeled her mana and activated the cube. Instantly, a foreboding and chilling sound filled the classroom. It echoed with a haunting familiarity that sent shivers down the students'' spines. Emily turned concerned eyes towards Alex, who seemed visibly shaken by the sound. His face grew pale, and his eyes widened with a mix of fear and disbelief. It was as if the sound had unearthed a long-buried memory, a painful reminder of a tragic event that shaped his life. Unable to bear seeing her friend in distress, Emily leaped to her feet and urgently pleaded, "Professor, please turn it off!" Lucy''s gaze shifted from Emily to Alex, and then to the rest of the class. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, she hastily and clumsily fumbled with the cube, desperately trying to silence the distressing sound. The room fell into an uneasy silence as the cube was finally deactivated. Alex sat frozen in his seat, his mind flooded with a rush of memories. The sound he had just heard resembled the haunting cries of the creature that had mercilessly taken away his parents during the ill-fated ceremony night. The weight of that loss, buried deep within his heart, resurfaced with unexpected intensity. Tears welled up in his eyes, and he struggled to regain composure. A torrent of emotions swept through him, but amidst the chaos, his mother''s words echoed in his mind, carrying a profound significance. "Despite not being my true son, you will always be." In that vulnerable moment, Alex found himself questioning the meaning of his mother''s words. Did they hold a hidden truth? Was there a deeper secret behind his lineage? The mystery of his identity now loomed larger than ever before, intertwining with the sorrow that enveloped him. Taking a deep breath, Alex wiped away a tear, determined to gather himself and carry on. He turned to Emily, his voice filled with a mixture of gratitude and resilience, as he assured her, "I''m fine, thanks, Emily." Their eyes met, understanding passing between them. Emily, ever the supportive friend, nodded gently, silently acknowledging the weight of his emotions. She opened her mouth to offer comforting words, but before she could utter a single syllable, Jiten''s voice rang out, filled with shock and urgency. "Guys, we have a huge problem!" Chapter 29: The Plan Both Emily, who was still concerned about Alex, and Alex, who was still recovering from the shock, looked at Jiten with a mix of curiosity and worry. Emily gestured with her face, silently urging Jiten to be mindful of Alex''s state. Jiten glanced around the classroom, realizing the attention they were drawing, and said. "The class is almost over," Jiten replied, his voice filled with urgency. "Let''s talk at the end." As the remaining minutes of the class passed, Lucy tried her best to change the mood, sharing interesting facts about teras and their cores. However, the weight of the earlier incident lingered, making it difficult for the students to fully engage in the lesson. Finally, the class came to an end, and Lucy, sensing the somber atmosphere, decided not to assign any homework. As the students began to leave, Jiten swiftly rose from his seat. Before Emily or Alex could ask about his earlier declaration, Lucy appeared in front of them, wearing a concerned expression. She addressed Alex and Emily directly, apologizing for the distress caused by the sound. "Alex, Emily, I apologize for what happened," Lucy began, her voice filled with sincerity. "I didn''t realize that the sound could trigger memories of that tragic night. Olana informed me about your past, and I want you to know that if you ever need anything or have any questions, I will be more than willing to help. Once again, I''m sorry." Before Alex or Emily could respond, their attention was redirected to Jiten, who suddenly appeared in the conversation. Lucy, noticing his mischievous smile, playfully scolded him, reminding him of his father''s teachings. "Jiten, your father was my teacher, and I have great respect for him," Lucy said, her tone firm but warm. "While I''ve known you since you were a little child, I can''t treat you differently in the classroom. So next time, please focus on the class and avoid daydreaming about potions. Understand?" Jiten grinned, rubbing the spot on his head where Lucy had playfully hit him. "Don''t worry, wise teacher," he replied, his voice filled with mock obedience. "It will never happen again." As Lucy left, Jiten''s expression turned serious. He looked at Emily and Alex and said, "Guys, let''s get out of here. I need to tell you something very serious." Curiosity piqued, both Alex and Emily nodded, and the three of them left the institute and headed to a nearby garden. Once they found a secluded bench, Jiten looked around to ensure no one was nearby, and then he took a deep breath. "You guys remember when I told you that I thought I heard a cry coming from the church facilities near my house, right?" Jiten asked, his voice filled with urgency. Alex and Emily nodded, their interest growing. Jiten continued, "Guys, that sound we heard in class... it''s what I heard!" Suddenly, a mixture of shock and disbelief washed over Alex and Emily''s faces, their minds racing with questions and uncertainties. Their minds raced with questions and uncertainties, struggling to comprehend the implications of what Jiten had just shared. This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source. Emily was the first to break the silence, her voice filled with a mix of disbelief and concern. "That''s impossible... Why would the church have teras inside the city? It doesn''t make any sense. The church is known for hunting and eliminating teras, not keeping them." Jiten pondered the question for a moment, his brows furrowing in deep thought. After a few seconds, he offered a tentative explanation, "Perhaps there are some corrupt individuals using the church facilities for illegal activities. They might be exploiting the teras for their own gain." Emily immediately countered, her voice tinged with skepticism, "Even if that were true, wouldn''t people have noticed the presence of teras in the city? It seems unlikely that such a significant secret could be hidden without anyone noticing." Emily''s skepticism persisted, her voice laced with doubt, "But even if that were true, wouldn''t someone have noticed? It''s hard to imagine such a significant secret being concealed without anyone catching on." Jiten''s gaze shifted from Emily to Alex, a grave expression etched upon his face. He voiced their collective concerns, his voice heavy with solemnity, "Let''s confront the facts. Is it not peculiar to find a grown tempest-grade tera in the heart of Lotardale, the safest city on the continent, during a significant ceremony? And what happened afterward? The tera died, yet the church has remained silent, deliberately withholding any explanation. It''s as if they''re hiding something." Emily and Alex absorbed Jiten''s words, each puzzle piece falling into place, painting a clearer picture of the church''s potential corruption. Realization and concern mingled in Emily''s voice as she spoke once more, "Jiten, are you suggesting that the Church of Elements is not just corrupt, but actively involved in criminal activities? Could they be partaking in dark deeds? But then, why keep teras alive within the city?" Jiten contemplated the question, his voice tinged with uncertainty, "Perhaps they keep the teras alive to extract their parts and cores for profit. " Emily shook her head, unconvinced. "That doesn''t make sense. If they were after the teras'' parts and cores, why wouldn''t they eliminate the teras first and then extract what they need?" Jiten furrowed his brow, realizing the flaw in his theory. "You''re right..." It was at this moment that Alex''s demeanor underwent a profound transformation. As he looked up, his usual gentle and composed expression had given way to a chilling resolve. A palpable aura of determination emanated from him, causing the temperature around them to rise. Emily and Jiten exchanged surprised glances, taken aback by this unfamiliar side of Alex. He spoke, his voice laced with an unwavering determination, "There''s only one way to unveil the truth within those walls. Tonight, after dinner, we will gather here and proceed to the church facilities. We''ll assess the security, identify vulnerabilities, and find a way to infiltrate without detection. And if Jiten''s suspicions hold true, the Church of Elements may pray for the return of the old heroes, for I won''t rest until every single one of them faces the justice they deserve." Emily''s concern for Alex deepened, her voice laden with worry, "Alex, are you sure about this? It could be dangerous. We don''t know what we might uncover." Alex turned to Emily, his eyes blazing with resolve, "Emily, we can''t let this slide. If the church is involved in illegal activities and hiding live teras within the city, then we must unearth the truth. I don''t want anyone else to suffer the same fate as my parents." Impressed by Alex''s unyielding conviction, Jiten interjected, "He''s right, Emily. Exposing the corruption, if it exists, is paramount. But we have to be cautious and meticulous. We can''t afford to be reckless. Our safety and the truth both matter." Emily sighed, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. "Alright, I''m in.¡± Chapter 30: Unveiling Secrets With their collective determination solidified, the trio knew that they were embarking on a perilous journey. They understood the risks involved, the potential dangers lurking within the church''s walls. But they also knew that the truth had to be unveiled, no matter the cost. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the city, Alex, Emily, and Jiten reconvened at the designated spot in the garden. They exchanged solemn glances, their hearts pounding with a potent mixture of anticipation and trepidation. The time had come to set their plan into motion. Jiten, being well-versed in the layout of the city and having a knack for devising strategies, took the lead. He outlined their objectives, the potential routes they could take, and the potential security measures they might encounter. The trio listened intently, absorbing every detail, each acutely aware of the gravity of the situation. With the plan laid out before them, they moved with calculated precision. They traversed the dimly lit streets, their footsteps muffled by the stillness of the night. Every alleyway, every corner held the potential for discovery or danger. Their senses heightened, their instincts sharp, they navigated through the city like shadows, staying vigilant, their resolve unyielding. Finally, they arrived at the top of the building where Jiten lived. From there, they could see a large warehouse surrounded by fences with cloth covering the entrance. Six men were running in and out of the warehouse. "Guys, something isn''t right," Alex looked at Jiten and asked, "What do you mean something isn''t right?" Jiten explained, "Their behavior is strange. Normally, they just stand at the entrance, but now they''re running in and out. Something big must be happening." Alex looked again and said, "So it''s perfect. Let''s get closer so we can hear what''s going on." Jiten didn''t move and said, "A wise man says, ''Only fools rush in.''" Alex was confused and asked, "What wise man, and aren''t we here to investigate?!''" Emily interjected and said, "Calm down, Alex. We aren''t losing anything by waiting a bit to see what happens." Alex was impatient and said, "We are! We are wasting time!" Just as Emily was ready to respond to Alex, Jiten said, "There''s a pattern. The guards are going in to grab something and then they throw it and go inside again to grab again and throw it again." Alex and Emily looked again at the guards'' movements and indeed noticed this pattern. "You are right, but what is it that they are throwing to the ground?" Jiten looked at them and said, "I don''t know. We need to get closer." As he said that, the sound of construction work began, and Jiten became furious. "This fucking noise! I''m sick and tired of listening to this every fucking night!" Alex and Emily finally heard the noise that Jiten had been complaining about, and they understood why he was so furious. It was very loud and unpleasant to hear. With their curiosity piqued and a sense of urgency growing within them, the trio cautiously moved closer to the warehouse. They remained hidden, using the cover of darkness to their advantage. Step by step, they closed the distance, and the sound of construction grew louder with each passing moment. The noise was accompanied by an intermittent flickering of lights, casting eerie shadows on their surroundings. Alex, Emily, and Jiten exchanged puzzled glances. Finally, they found a vantage point on the fence near the warehouse where they could listen without being seen. Jiten took a flask from his bag and whispered to the two, "Give me some space." Alex and Emily gave Jiten some room as he started pouring the liquid from the flask onto the fence. The fence melted like ice on a sunny day, opening a hole. "Jiten, what was that?" Alex asked. Jiten responded, "It''s an acid that I made. I thought it would be useful." Alex responded with a thumbs up to his friend. Now, with the hole in the fence, they could hear the guards'' voices more clearly. They huddled together, trying to make sense of the unfolding events. However, the loud sounds of construction always obstructed their hearing. A sudden cacophony of voices reached their ears, cutting through the noise of construction. Straining to decipher the words amidst the commotion, they could sense the agitation and urgency in the voices. Something unexpected had clearly transpired within the warehouse, causing a disruption in the guards'' routine activities. Unauthorized use: this story is on Amazon without permission from the author. Report any sightings. As their focus sharpened, a figure emerged from the shadows, his voice rising above the rest. Cloaked in darkness, his features remained obscured, adding to his aura of mystery. Yet, his commanding presence demanded the attention of those around him. His words carried authority, laced with frustration and desperation. "I don''t care how it happened! We need to contain the situation immediately!" The man''s booming voice echoed through the night, leaving no doubt about the gravity of the circumstances. Peering through the hole in the fence, the trio shared the same question racing through their minds: "Contain what?" It was Alex who voiced his thoughts first, his curiosity getting the better of him. Jiten, wearing a puzzled expression, followed Alex''s gaze toward the source of the authoritative voice, trying to discern the figure giving orders. The situation inside the warehouse seemed to grow even more frenetic, and the clamor of construction escalated, assaulting their ears. While observing through the fence, Emily''s attention was drawn to one of the objects discarded by the guards. Taking a deep breath, she tapped into her elemental magic, summoning a small tornado the size of a fist. With precision, the swirling wind lifted the object off the ground, suspending it in mid-air. Emily then deftly controlled the tornado, bringing the object closer. When they finally caught sight of the item in Emily''s hand, they were shocked. It was a mimic cube, emitting the incessant construction sound. Realizing the significance, Jiten turned to his friends with an expression of revelation. "I knew it was fake!" Examining the cube closely, Emily noticed something peculiar¡ªthe runes inscribed on it appeared to be connected to the other cubes generating the construction sounds. Jiten, struck by an idea, hesitated before sharing it with his friends, aware that it might not be well received. Alex, sensing Jiten''s hesitation, prodded him. "Why the hesitation? What''s your idea?" Taking another mimic cube from his bag, Jiten revealed it to his perplexed friends. Alex couldn''t contain his surprise, blurting out, "I didn''t know you had one! These things aren''t cheap!" Jiten scratched his head sheepishly and admitted, "Well, it''s not mine. I borrowed it." Alex''s sudden realization struck him like lightning. He recalled something and exclaimed, "Jiten, what the fuck! Why would you steal Professor Turner''s mimic cube?!" Emily, equally shocked, added, "Oh no, you robbed a teacher!" Seeing his friends getting worked up, Jiten tried to calm them down. "Calm down, guys. Leave Lucy to me. Now, do you want to hear me out?" They both nodded in agreement, and Jiten continued, "You see, all those boxes are interconnected, generating the construction sound. If we can deactivate them, not only will we be able to hear what''s happening inside, but we can also record the sound and analyze it later." After pondering Jiten''s proposition, Emily chimed in, "I think it''s a good idea, but how do we turn them off?" Jiten listened attentively and replied, "Well, we can either destroy them, but that might draw attention to us, or you can use your tornado to separate this one, causing the system to break." Emily contemplated his suggestion and responded, "I can''t control it from a long distance..." As they contemplated alternative approaches, Alex spoke up, "I can cast Levitate on it, and we can wait until the system breaks." Both Emily and Jiten looked at him, considering his offer, and said, "Okay, Alex, we know you can do it." With that, they handed the mimic box, still emitting construction noises, to Alex. Placing the box on the ground, Alex looked at Jiten, who held Lucy''s recording device in hand, ready to capture the sound. Taking a moment to steady himself, Alex cast the Levitate spell, channeling his mana into the box. Slowly, it began to rise, but as it ascended higher, it became increasingly challenging for Alex to maintain control. Nevertheless, he persisted, and the box continued to climb until, suddenly, the construction noise ceased. In the ensuing silence, the previously commanding voice bellowed, "Turn the boxes back on immediately!" However, before the boxes could be reactivated, an earth-shattering roar erupted from the warehouse. Hearing this, Alex was shaken to his core and hastily ended the spell. As the box, now suspended in the sky, started its descent, Jiten stopped the recording and exclaimed, "Guys, let''s get out of here quickly! Once that box hits the ground, they''ll know our location!" Emily nodded in agreement, and they sprinted away. However, when they glanced back, they noticed that Alex was still frozen in place. They quickly turned around and rushed to his side, grabbing him, just as the box crashed to the ground, creating a thunderous noise. With Alex now safely with them, Jiten suggested, "Let''s hide here," gesturing towards an alleyway filled with trash cans. They huddled in the concealed spot, gasping for breath. Before they could fully recover, a tall, enigmatic man appeared, seemingly searching for something. Jiten''s expression mirrored Alex''s shock upon seeing the man. Emily, observing Jiten''s reaction, patiently waited for the man to depart. Once he was out of sight, Jiten assisted Emily in helping Alex to his feet. Concerned, Emily asked, "Alex, are you okay?" Alex, calming himself down, replied, "Sorry, guys. I''m okay." Jiten looked at his friend and patted him on the back, saying, "It''s alright, fire boy. What matters is that we''re safe." Alex nodded appreciatively and inquired, "So, did you get it?" Jiten assumed a serious expression and responded, "Yes, but not only that, I know who is behind all of this." Chapter 31: The Revelation Shocked by Jiten''s words, both Alex and Emily couldn''t help but ask, "Who is it?" Jiten looked around cautiously and responded, "Not here. Let''s go back to the park." The trio quickly made their way back to the park and found a secluded spot where they could speak freely. As they settled down, Alex couldn''t contain his curiosity any longer. He urged Jiten, "Please, tell us who is behind all of this." Jiten took a deep breath and met their gazes. "It''s Jordan Kingsley," he revealed. Emily''s face contorted in disbelief, and she exclaimed, "Impossible!" Alex, who was still unfamiliar with the name, furrowed his brow and asked, "Who the hell is Jordan Kingsley?" Jiten smiled at Alex''s confusion and said, "Sorry, Alex, I forgot you didn''t know. Jordan Kingsley is also known as Black Lightning." As the words sank in, Alex''s face contorted in shock. Memories of Oswin showing him his shoulder came rushing back, and he felt a chill run down his spine. Emily, recovering from her initial shock, questioned Jiten further. "Why would Black Lightning keep live teras inside the city?" She continued, "And if Black Lightning was here, there''s no way we would survive. He would find us in less than a second." Jiten clarified, "I didn''t say that he was physically present here. What I meant is that he is the mastermind behind all of this." Emily pressed on, asking, "How do you know?" Jiten locked eyes with his friends and explained, "The guy who followed us was wearing the Ashen Blades uniform with their emblem." Alex, now catching up with the conversation, voiced his confusion, "And what does that have to do with Black Lightning?" Emily patiently clarified, "The Ashen Blades are a criminal organization created by Jordan Kingsley after he was expelled from all human cities. He''s responsible for the murder of Arnold Frey''s younger sister and many others from the church." Alex turned to Jiten, seeking more information. "How do you know about their uniforms?" Alex gazed up at the sky, desperately seeking a solution. "So what do we do now that we have all this knowledge and evidence?" he asked, determination resonating in his voice. Emily took a moment to ponder before suggesting, "We must alert the church." Jiten nodded in agreement, but a question lingered in his mind. "Yes, but whom can we truly trust within the church?" Emily considered her options before responding, "What about Olana? She stands apart from the rest. She will understand and believe us, unlike those who merely see Alex and me as heirs." Alex nodded, concurring with Emily, but he added, "I agree, but we mustn''t inform Olana just yet. We don''t want to make her a target for the Ashen Blades. I don''t want her burdened because of me." Both Jiten and Emily agreed to withhold the information from Olana for the time being. However, this left them facing the same predicament once again. Jiten and Alex had no connections with influential figures in the church, and Emily had reservations about trusting anyone she already knew with such sensitive information. Suddenly, Alex''s face lit up with an idea. "Guys, what if we reach out to Max?" Jiten immediately dismissed the idea, saying, "That''s a bad idea." Alex implored him, "Let''s put our differences aside and think about this, Jiten. Max could potentially approach Bishop Marley, who wields significant power within the church." Jiten looked back at Alex and responded, "And that''s precisely why it''s a risky proposition. I''ve never seen Bishop Marley act for the greater good without an audience." Alex persisted, "But he could utilize his influence within the church to take action." Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings. "I also agree with Alex, and I believe Max will have faith in us," said Emily, her voice filled with determination. Jiten let out a frustrated sigh and facepalmed. "Maybe he''ll believe in you, but you forget about me and Alex," he responded, his tone tinged with skepticism. Alex looked down, unable to deny the truth in Jiten''s words. Since waking up from his coma, the Max he once knew had changed. It was difficult to predict how he would react to their revelations. "Alright, no problem. Let me take the lead in speaking with him. If he agrees, we can show him the recorded roar," Emily suggested, stepping up to the challenge. With their plan set, the trio dispersed and returned to their respective homes. Alex spent the weekend diligently working on his homework and, more importantly, training with his sword. He knew he needed to prepare himself for a potential confrontation with Max, who far surpassed him in terms of skill and ability in the sword competition 3 months from now. Days turned into nights as Alex honed his swordsmanship, pushing himself to his limits. The clash of metal against metal echoed through the training grounds, a testament to his unwavering determination. Each swing, each parry, was a step closer to bridging the gap between himself and the others. As the sun set on Sunday evening, Alex wiped the sweat from his brow and sheathed his sword. Though he was physically exhausted, a flicker of hope burned within him. He knew that with enough practice and dedication, he could stand his ground against the other students. The upcoming meeting with Max loomed in the distance, a crucial turning point in their quest for justice. Alex couldn''t help but feel a mix of apprehension. Would Max believe their story? Finally, Monday arrived, signaling the beginning of another week at the institute. For Alex, the initial struggle of adapting to the new routine had subsided, and now his main challenge was mentally preparing himself for Professor Harrow''s class. As he slipped into his crisp white EIL uniform, he couldn''t help but feel a mix of anticipation and nerves coursing through his veins. It was crucial to make the most of each lesson, especially with the upcoming sword competition just three months away. Upon entering the classroom, Alex''s eyes immediately sought out Emily, who stood at the front engaged in an animated conversation with two other girls. Her face lit up as she caught sight of him, and she quickly made her way over. "Good morning, Alex. How was your weekend?" she greeted him with genuine warmth. "Good morning, Emily," Alex replied, his tired smile revealing the traces of his busy weekend. "It was quite busy, to be honest. I spent most of my time training with my sword, trying to improve my skills for the competition." His gaze shifted to the two girls standing beside Emily. "By the way, who are your friends?" Emily beamed proudly as she introduced her classmates. "This is Lily and Sarah. They''re in the same combat training class as me." Lily and Sarah nodded cordially, acknowledging Alex''s presence. Their friendly gestures indicated that they were a close-knit group. As the conversation continued, Lily and Sarah shared an interesting tidbit about the end-of-year ceremony organized by the church of elements for the students. Emily''s expression quickly shifted from curiosity to a mixture of fear and cuteness as she revealed a superstition associated with the event. "They say that whoever attends the ceremony without a partner will be cursed and destined to die alone," she confessed, her voice laced with a hint of trepidation. Amused by Emily''s adorable fear, Alex chuckled softly, seeking to assuage her concerns. "Come on, Emily. It''s just a harmless tradition, meant to bring everyone together and have some fun. I''m sure the curse part is just a myth." He glanced at Lily and Sarah, who nodded in agreement, affirming that it was all in good spirit. Lily added, her voice brimming with reassurance, "Absolutely! Don''t let superstitions get to you, Emily. The ceremony is more about fostering camaraderie and celebrating our achievements." Sarah chimed in, her voice soothing, "Exactly! It''s a chance for all of us to enjoy each other''s company and create lasting memories. So, don''t worry too much about it." Emily visibly relaxed, her fears dissipating like mist in the morning sun. Grateful for their supportive words, she turned to Alex, her eyes reflecting a newfound calmness. "So, are you ready for Professor Harrow''s class today?" she inquired, her voice filled with genuine interest. Alex''s face contorted in mock anguish, conveying his apprehension. "Ready as I''ll ever be," he replied with a hint of a sigh. Then, leaning closer to Emily to ensure their privacy, he whispered, "Before we begin, can we talk in private for a moment?" Noticing the change in his demeanor, Emily''s cheeks flushed slightly, but she nodded in agreement. Aware of their surroundings, Sarah and Lily graciously gave them some space, stepping aside to engage in their own conversation. As they distanced themselves from the others, Alex''s voice remained low as he broached the topic that had been weighing on his mind. "Did you manage to talk to Max yet?" he inquired, his tone a mixture of curiosity and concern. Emily''s blush intensified, but her voice exuded a sense of accomplishment. "Yes, before you arrived, I asked him if we could have lunch together, and he agreed. I thought it would be a good opportunity for all of us to talk." Her eyes met Alex''s, seeking his approval. A genuine smile spread across Alex''s face, pride shimmering in his eyes. "Good job, Emily. I knew we could count on you!" he exclaimed softly, appreciating her proactive approach to the situation. Chapter 32: The Encounter Max was engrossed in a book when his eyes were drawn to the graceful entrance of Emily into the classroom. A radiant smile effortlessly graced her lips, illuminating the room with her beauty. Her captivating presence captured Max''s attention, and he couldn''t help but feel a flutter in his heart. Approaching his desk, Emily moved with a gentle elegance, her eyes sparkling with warmth as she greeted Max. Her smile, like a sunbeam breaking through clouds, instantly lifted his spirits. "Hey, Max," she cheerfully said, her voice melodic and inviting. "Would you like to have lunch together today?" Max''s excitement surged within him, like a bubbling spring of joy. He couldn''t believe his luck as he eagerly accepted her invitation. "Of course! I would be absolutely thrilled to have lunch with you!" His voice, filled with genuine enthusiasm, conveyed the depth of his happiness. This unexpected opportunity to spend time with Emily filled his heart with anticipation and excitement. "Okay, don''t forget. See you after class!" Emily said, her words dancing on the air like a sweet melody, before gracefully returning to her group of friends. Just as Max was on the verge of immersing himself in the overwhelming joy of the moment, his gaze was captured by the entrance of Alex into the classroom. In an instant, his elation transformed into a sense of unease as he observed Alex approaching Emily and her two friends. They engaged in a conversation, their heads leaning closer together, exchanging hushed words. A wave of apprehension washed over Max as he contemplated the possibility of Alex extending an invitation to Emily for the upcoming end-of-year ceremony. Although the event was still distant, today marked the first day of the official announcement, and his heart couldn''t help but tremble with worry. Attempting to mask his growing unease, Max tried to appear composed, knowing it was too early to display his concern openly. Nevertheless, observing the interaction between Alex and Emily ignited a flicker of nervousness within him, an unsettling thought taking root in his mind. However, Max''s elation was momentarily dampened when his gaze caught sight of Samantha settling into the seat beside him. Her radiant golden locks cascaded around her shoulders, framing a face that seemed to possess an ethereal glow. Samantha''s elegance and poise were captivating, and Max couldn''t help but be captivated by her beauty. "Good morning, Max," Samantha greeted him with a smile that could rival the sun''s brilliance. Her voice was as melodious as a songbird, adding to her undeniable charm. Max returned the smile, feeling a warm connection forming between them. "Hey Samantha, how are you doing?" A faint blush painted Samantha''s cheeks, enhancing her natural allure. "I''m doing fine, thank you for asking," she replied, her voice soft and enchanting. Her eyes sparkled with a mix of confidence and vulnerability, making her all the more captivating. Max couldn''t help but be drawn to Samantha''s presence, appreciating the delicate balance of her beauty and grace. "Did you see they posted the date for the end-of-year ceremony at the entrance?" Samantha asked, her gaze fixed on him. Max nodded, his eyes never straying from her captivating features. "Yes, I noticed. Has anyone already asked you to be their partner?" he inquired, genuinely intrigued. A soft giggle escaped Samantha''s lips, adding a touch of playfulness to her charm. "No, ahahah, no one has extended an invitation just yet. I''m still available... for now," she replied, a subtle hint of anticipation in her voice. Max''s admiration for Samantha grew, and he couldn''t help but express his appreciation. "I never knew this side of yours. You should embrace this side of yourself more often. And don''t worry, I''ve heard that you''re quite popular. I''m sure there will be a long line of suitors vying for your attention." Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author''s consent. Report any sightings. Their conversation flowed effortlessly, each moment allowing Max to further appreciate Samantha''s allure and inner beauty. However, as their interaction came to a pause, Professor Harrow entered the room, signaling the start of the class. Max''s gaze drifted towards Emily, his heart sinking momentarily as he saw her seated next to Alex, their connection tugging at his emotions. "Good morning, class," Professor Harrow''s voice resonated through the room, commanding the attention of the students. His presence exuded authority and wisdom, instilling a sense of respect among the class. As he scanned the room, his eyes met the eager gazes of his students, their anticipation palpable. "I hope everyone is settled in, and I trust you all had a productive first week here at EIL," Professor Harrow continued, his words lacking genuine concern. His tone carried a hint of formality, indicating the obligatory nature of his statement. "Remember, if you encounter any challenges or have questions, I am here to assist you. As your headteacher, it is my duty to ensure your success." Turning towards the chalkboard, Professor Harrow reached for a piece of chalk with deliberate movements. As the white dust kissed the surface, his voice resonated with anticipation. "Today, we will explore a system devised by the church to apprehend and bring to justice those who have chosen to defy the law. Our topic for the day is the bounty system." The atmosphere in the classroom shifted, with students leaning in closer, their curiosity ignited. The concept of bounties, a means to track and capture outlaws, was not foreign to them. They had already glimpsed the bounty hall and engaged in discussions about the most notorious outlaws. Some outlaws had gained a level of notoriety surpassing even high-ranking church officials, developing their own fan base. Black Lightning was the biggest among these infamous figures, with his posters being sold as memorabilia. The students understood the significance of maintaining order and justice, and the idea of a system designed to apprehend those who defied it resonated deeply within their minds. They were aware that some of them, in the future, would venture into the wilderness to hunt down these outlaws and deliver justice. " The bounty system serves as a vital mechanism to bring justice to those who defy the law," Professor Harrow began, his gaze sweeping across the attentive faces before him. "It is a carefully structured framework that allows individuals to undertake quests in pursuit of outlaws and reap the rewards for their success." He explained that the bounty system operated on a hierarchical basis, with various ranks dictating the level of quests one could undertake. "Only those who have attained the Adept rank or higher are eligible to access and participate in the bounty system," Professor Harrow clarified, emphasizing the significance of progressing through the ranks. "The Adept rank serves as a testament to an individual''s skills, knowledge, and commitment to upholding the church''s principles," he continued. "It signifies that you have honed your abilities to a level where you are deemed capable of facing the dangers and challenges that come with pursuing outlaws." As the students absorbed this information, their ambition and determination swelled within them. The prospect of becoming an Adept, of gaining the eligibility to undertake quests in the bounty system, filled them with a sense of purpose and direction. Professor Harrow proceeded to outline the rules and regulations that governed the bounty system. He emphasized the importance of understanding and adhering to these guidelines to ensure safety, fairness, and the efficient execution of justice. The rules ranged from guidelines on reporting findings and providing evidence to the procedures for claiming rewards and the protocols for collaborating with fellow bounty hunters. He then addressed the students'' curiosity about encountering outlaws accidentally. "If you chance upon an outlaw and successfully apprehend them, not only will you be rewarded with their respective bounty, but your rank will also increase," he explained. However, he cautioned against intentionally seeking out high-ranking outlaws to expedite rank progression. "Attempting to take on high bounty outlaws for the sake of rank advancement is ill-advised," he warned. "Many past students have fallen victim to experienced killers listed in the bounty hall. Even if you are more powerful, their expertise and cunning can be your undoing." Professor Harrow highlighted the importance of collaboration and team dynamics in the pursuit of clearing missions. "The most efficient and fastest way to climb ranks is by working together in groups," he advised. "Clearing missions involve facing formidable creatures known as teras, rather than human outlaws who may deceive you. With a coordinated team effort, you can successfully overcome these challenges and progress in your ranks." As the students absorbed the information, a sense of caution and understanding settled within them. They realized that the bounty system required strategic thinking, measured actions, and a focus on growth rather than rash pursuits. "Remember, the bounty system is not a mere game or pursuit of personal gain," Professor Harrow emphasized, his voice carrying a tone of solemnity. "It is a solemn responsibility to uphold the values of justice and protect the innocent. You are the guardians of order, and your actions within the bounty system reflect the integrity of the church and our commitment to maintaining a just society.¡± With these final words, Professor Harrow concluded his explanation of the bounty system. The students sat in silence, their minds processing the weight of their newfound responsibilities. Max, in particular, felt a renewed sense of purpose and determination. He understood that the bounty system was not just a means of personal gain but a crucial tool to uphold justice and protect the innocent. As the students left the classroom, Max''s thoughts turned to his upcoming lunch with Emily. The encounter with Alex lingered in the back of his mind, but he resolved not to let it dampen his spirits. Instead, he would focus on getting to know Emily better, cherishing this opportunity to spend time with someone who ignited his heart. Chapter 33: Lunchtime Revelations Max''s footsteps reverberated through the bustling hallways as he made his way to the cafeteria, his anticipation for lunch with Emily fueling his excitement. Although the encounter with Alex lingered in his mind, he pushed aside any doubts and focused on the budding connection he felt with Emily. Upon entering the cafeteria, Max scanned the room, searching for Emily''s familiar figure. There she sat, at a table near the window, her radiant smile illuminating the space. Max''s heart skipped a beat as he approached her, a mix of nervousness and eagerness coursing through him. "Hey, Max!" Emily''s melodic voice greeted him, warming his soul. "I saved you a seat!" A smile lit up Max''s face as he happily joined Emily at the table. However, his joy quickly dissolved when he noticed Alex and Jiten taking seats beside him. Max glanced at Emily, his confusion evident. "Why are they here? I thought you wanted to have lunch with me alone." Before Emily could respond, Alex, unaware of Max''s comment, turned to him with a smile and said, "Thanks, Max, for agreeing to meet with us. We need your help!" Max''s smile faltered, disappointment creeping in as he shifted his gaze between Emily and Alex. He couldn''t comprehend why Alex and Jiten were joining them for lunch, especially when he had been looking forward to a private moment with Emily. Concealing his disappointment in front of Emily, Max forced a smile and inquired, "Help? What do you need?" Emily exchanged a glance with Alex, her expression a mix of concern and hesitation. "Max, there''s something important we need to discuss," she began, her voice gentle yet tinged with urgency. "Alex, Jiten, and I have made a significant discovery, and we believed it was best if we discussed it together with you because we trust you and you know the person that could help us." Max, still disheartened, nodded and said, "Alright, I''m listening. What''s going on?" Emily looked at Max with a solemn expression, her voice tinged with urgency and anticipation. "Max, something crucial happened the other night, we were in teras Anatomy class and Professor lucy showed us the sound of a tera and Jiten told us that sound was what he heard in the warehouse behind his house and we went to investigate that night. We went to Jiten''s building and saw a warehouse with strange guards running in and out. They were throwing something on the ground repeatedly. Jiten melted a hole in the fence, and we overheard a commanding voice demanding containment. That''s when I used my elemental magic to lift a mimic cube and realized it was responsible for the construction noise. Jiten had an idea to deactivate the cubes and record the sound. Alex levitated a cube, to turn off the other cubes and when we did a roar erupted from the warehouse. Later, while running to safety we saw an enigmatic man from the criminal organization Ashen blades.¡± Max was a bit taken a back and asked ¡°did you record that roar?¡± Alex nodded and said ¡°yes we did we got a mimic cube as well¡±. Max paused to think about their situation, and finally spoke ¡°if what you guys are telling is true the people in the city maybe in danger but what could I do?¡± This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere. After that Emily responded him politely and said ¡°we know you have a special relationship with Bishop Marley and if you could talk to him, we think he has the influence to deal with these criminals¡±. As Max heard Bishop Marley''s name, he became nervous and said, "Bishop Marley is a really busy person. I don''t think he will listen, and even if he does, what if what you heard is a fake sound or if there isn''t anything happening there anymore? I don''t want to look like a fool and risk losing all credibility with him. Sorry, guys, I wish you luck, but I don''t think I can help you." Upon hearing this, Alex and Emily became sad, but Jiten interjected, saying, "Cut the bullshit. What if we do you a favor and retrieve it?" Max looked at Jiten and smirked, asking ironically, "What could you do for me that I couldn''t do myself?" Jiten smiled and replied, "Well, tell me, every man has a price or something they really want" After hearing Jiten''s response, Max remembered something, and his expression and demeanor changed. He said, "Actually, now that you mention it, there''s something bothering me. Ever since they announced the date for the end-of-the-year ceremony, a lot of people have been trying to approach me, and it''s becoming overwhelming. Coincidentally, I would love to go with Emily. So, here''s the deal: if Emily agrees to go with me, I will try to convince Bishop Marley." Upon hearing this, Alex and Jiten looked at each other and grinned as if they had won the lottery. Emily, on the other hand, appeared pale and glanced at Alex, asking, "Is this okay?" Alex reassured her, saying, "Of course it is! We''ll get Bishop Marley''s help, and you won''t need to worry anymore about that curse you were concerned about. It''s a win-win!" For some reason, Emily looked pained, but she forced a smile and said, "Thanks, Max. I will gladly accept your invitation." Max was overjoyed. Max''s heart swelled with joy as Emily accepted his invitation to the end of the year ceremony. A weight seemed to lift off his shoulders, knowing that he had found a way to spend a special evening with Emily. He turned to Jiten and Alex, his determination evident in his eyes. "Alright," Max declared, his voice filled with newfound confidence. "I''ll do it. I''ll talk to Bishop Marley and see if he can help. But I can''t promise anything." As the lunch hour drew to a close, Max left the cafeteria with some of his friends, his excitement palpable. Jiten, getting up, said, "I''m going, guys. I need to return the mimic box to Lucy. Bye, Emily. See you in class, fire boy!" Now, only Emily and Alex remained. "Nice job, Emily. We were saved by your beauty!" Alex said, still happy that everything went well. "Do you really think that?" Emily asked with a face that showed her unhappiness. "Think what?" Alex replied, confused by his friend''s sudden change in demeanor. "Do you really think I''m beautiful?" Alex smiled and said, "Of course, only a blind man wouldn''t see it." However, Emily picked up her things, her face still sad and on the verge of tears, and left without even looking back at him. Alex was left alone in the cafeteria, contemplating what he might have said wrong. Meanwhile, Jiten reached the Teras Anatomy classroom. He entered and found Lucy surrounded by numerous boxes. When Lucy heard someone entering her classroom, she looked up and saw Jiten, smiling at her. "Jiten, why are you here? Did you miss me?" she asked. Jiten smiled and politely replied, "Of course, I missed you." Suspicion flickered across Lucy''s face as she paused her work and looked at him. "Did you get in trouble and need my help?" she inquired. Jiten smiled and said, "No, not yet." Lucy glanced at the boxes and urged Jiten to be direct, stating that she had things to do. Taking a deep breath, Jiten apologized, "Okay, first, I''m sorry. And second, here is your mimic cube." Lucy, upon hearing that, got up and ran to Jiten, thanking him with a smile. "Oh my! Thank you, Jiten. I was looking for it all weekend," she exclaimed, patting Jiten on the head as if he were a good boy. Then, she asked, "By the way, where was this?" Jiten, anticipating her reaction, said, "Well, I stole it from you last class." Lucy, who had been patting Jiten''s head, stopped abruptly, her hand coming down on Jiten repeatedly. "You what?!" she exclaimed, continuing to scold him at length. After Lucy calmed down, she asked why he had stolen the mimic cube. Jiten explained the reason, shocking Lucy. When she had the mimic cube in her hand, she channeled some mana, and a loud roar emanated from it. Lucy''s expression turned intrigued, and she continued to play the roar repeatedly. Jiten began to wonder if she was going crazy. Just as he was about to ask if she was alright, Lucy shushed him and said, "There..." Jiten was confused but listened attentively, and suddenly he heard it too. Multiple small roars followed and overlapped with the big roar. "What does this mean?" Jiten asked. "I don''t know yet, but these sounds are definitely more significant than they first appeared. Let me be alone to analyze this. And for the time being, no more stealing!" Lucy declared. Jiten nodded and made his way to the potions class where Alex was waiting. Chapter 34: Second Try As Jiten entered the potions classroom, he found Alex leaning against a table, lost in thought. Alex looked up, noticing Jiten''s arrival, and waved him over. Jiten joined him, and the two friends exchanged a brief nod before Jiten spoke. "Lucy has recovered the mimic cube," Jiten informed Alex. "She was quite upset when she found out I had taken it, but she''s currently analyzing the sounds we recorded with it. There seems to be something significant about them." Alex''s interest was piqued, and he asked, "What has she discovered?" Jiten shrugged, his curiosity matching Alex''s. "She hasn''t found all the answers yet, but she mentioned that the sounds appear to be more important than we initially thought. She asked for some time alone to analyze them further." Before Alex could continue the conversation, Professor Klaus entered the potions classroom, catching their attention. He walked briskly, his footsteps echoing in the room, and fixed them with a stern gaze that demanded their immediate attention. The sudden shift in the atmosphere silenced the murmurs and conversations among the students. As Professor Klaus reached the front of the classroom, he cleared his throat with a deliberate intensity, commanding the room''s focus. The sound reverberated, filling the air with an air of authority. It was a clear signal that the time for casual chatter had come to an end. "Mr. Stern, Mr. Feller," Professor Klaus''s voice boomed through the room, carrying the weight of his disapproval. "This is not a social gathering. We have a lesson to attend to. Please take your seats and prepare your materials." His words hung in the air, punctuated by the seriousness in his expression. The students exchanged glances, realizing the gravity of the situation. Alex and Jiten swiftly made their way to their seats, the reminder of their purpose in the classroom resonating within them. The lesson that followed was a lengthy one, filled with complex formulas, intricate instructions, and precise measurements. Professor Klaus meticulously explained each step, emphasizing the importance of precision and attention to detail. The potions classroom was filled with the aroma of various ingredients and the clinking of glassware as the students diligently followed the instructions, their focus unwavering. Eventually, the class drew to a close, and Jiten gathered his belongings, ready to head home. He bid Alex farewell with a nod, and Jiten exited the classroom, leaving Alex to make his way to his next class with Olana. If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. As Alex entered the corridor, anticipation for the upcoming class surged within him. However, in recent classes, he had struggled to produce good results. Every time he attempted to connect with his Elemental power, he would experience unsettling visions and overwhelming emotions. Fear had started to creep into his mind, casting doubt on his abilities. As he reached the classroom door, he saw the other elemental heirs standing together, engaged in conversation. Alex smiled and approached them, greeting them warmly. Samantha nodded in acknowledgment, and Max exclaimed, "Alex! Good thing you''re here!" Alex was taken aback by Max''s enthusiasm and positive mood. It reminded him of how his friend used to be before. He then glanced at Emily, but she didn''t react or say anything, which was unusual for her. Normally, she would be the first to engage in conversation. Before Alex could inquire about Emily''s change in demeanor, Olana appeared and said, "Sorry, guys. I had something to take care of. Let''s head inside." They all entered the classroom together. When they were seated, Olana spoke again, "I''m sorry, guys. The director asked me to attend a meeting regarding the end-of-year exam. I think this year is going to be different from other years." The four of them were surprised, and Max asked, "Sis... I mean, teacher! Sorry, isn''t the end-of-year exam always the same?" Upon realizing that Max had almost called Olana "sis" in class, everyone smiled. Olana continued, "I can''t tell you guys everything I know, but what I can tell you is that because of you guys, this year''s exam is going to be different. The EIL has never seen such a level of talent in first years. Most of the first years end their year with your rank, so the church is going to conduct a different test." They felt a twinge of guilt, realizing that their exceptional abilities had prompted a change in the exam format. They exchanged glances, a mixture of excitement and apprehension filling the air. "But everything will come; no need to dwell on things we have no control over. Now, for this class, we will try something new," Olana said reassuringly. After her words, she began the class and gave them instructions for the new exercise. "Normally, mages can expand their mana into a ball and control its size. This exercise helps improve mana control. What I want you to do is use your elemental power instead of mana to form a ball and control its size by increasing it." As soon as Olana finished her explanation, all four of them focused their energy. After a while, a transparent green ball started to materialize in front of Max. He appeared visibly troubled, as if holding the ball was challenging for him. Next, Emily created a light blue transparent ball, showing a similar struggle. Samantha was the third to attempt it, forming a deep blue transparent ball. Olana closely observed their progress, noticing their visible struggles. When Olana turned her gaze toward Alex, she noticed that he wasn''t closing his eyes but instead observing the others. Approaching him, Olana said, "Alex, I understand what you''re thinking, but please, try closing your eyes and connecting with your Element." Motivated by Olana''s unwavering gaze, Alex felt a surge of determination coursing through him. He closed his eyes, summoning the courage to delve deep into his memories, searching for that elusive feeling he had experienced that fateful night. Within the depths of his mind, vivid images began to materialize. He began to see images of a large-scale battle, where thousands of people fought against unrecognizable creatures. Destruction rained upon a city, with flames engulfing everything, children crying, and countless casualties. The intensity of the images grew, accompanied by screams growing louder and louder, calling out his name, "Alex! Alex! Alex!" The screams felt familiar, as if he knew those voices. They sounded like Emily''s and Olana''s voices. In a desperate attempt to help them, Alex tried to locate them amidst the chaotic battlefield. Before Alex could witness more, the familiar figure with red eyes from his recurring dreams looked at him and said, "That''s enough." With a sudden jolt, Alex opened his eyes, only to find everyone''s gaze fixed upon him. Standing before him was a tall, thin, old man. Before Alex could inquire about the situation, his vision darkened, and he succumbed to a deep slumber. Chapter 35: The Chess Piece The day was turning out much better than Max had anticipated. Not only did he get to have lunch with Emily, but he also convinced her to accompany him to the end-of-year ceremony. Max couldn''t have been happier. After their elementary Bible studies class, he made his way to his sister''s class. On the way, Max noticed that Emily seemed quieter than usual. Concerned, he turned to her and asked, "Emily, is everything okay? You seem a bit different." Lost in thought, Emily looked at him and replied, "No, everything''s okay. I''m just a bit tired with everything that''s been happening lately." Max flashed her a reassuring smile and said, "It''s normal to feel that way after witnessing the things you and the others have seen. But I promise you, I''ll do my best to convince Bishop Marley." Emily mustered a smile and nodded in gratitude. After a short while, Max and Emily arrived at the classroom door, where Samantha stood, her noble demeanor intact. "Hi, Samantha!" Max greeted her, causing her to blush slightly. Samantha replied, "Hello, Max," and nodded at Emily, who returned the gesture. Curiosity got the better of Max, and he asked Samantha, "Where''s Olana?" Samantha responded, "I''m not sure, but it''s unusual for her to be late like this." Just then, they heard footsteps approaching. However, instead of Olana, it was Alex who came into their view. Max was the first to greet him, and soon after, Olana appeared, apologizing for her tardiness. Once inside the classroom, Olana explained that she had been in a meeting regarding the upcoming end-of-year exam. Max, having made friends with older students, knew how crucial the final exam was for determining one''s rank. Based on what he knew, the exam was normally conducted in the same format every year. It was a survival test where students fought against each other and golems controlled by the church. In this exam, students could use magic and martial arts to earn points and demonstrate their skills. That''s why Max was shocked when Olana informed them that this year''s exam would be different. Due to their rank, he didn''t know what to expect, but he was certain that it wouldn''t be easier than last year. Olana then proceeded to give pointers on how to perform the new exercise. For Max, it wasn''t entirely new, as he had already trained it with his sister in the past. He took a deep breath, recalling the feeling of practicing his powers with her when they were younger. Soon, a green ball of elemental power appeared before him. He focused on deepening his emotions to enlarge it, but he found it challenging. However, when he glanced at the others, he noticed that only Samantha and Emily had smaller balls in front of them. This realization brought him a sense of calm, knowing that he was still the best among them. After a while, Max heard his sister''s voice and opened his eyes. She was speaking to Alex, who was struggling to produce an elemental ball. This brought a sense of satisfaction to Max, as he knew that Alex''s talent was remarkable. Even without any prior knowledge, Alex managed to surpass everyone in just a few attempts, which was both impressive and intimidating. Max felt at peace, knowing that he was better than Alex. However, as he entertained these thoughts, the air around him grew hotter and hotter. His elemental ball started fluctuating rapidly, and he lost control of it. The elemental energy became frenetic. He followed the waves and saw Alex seated with a gigantic ball that was rapidly expanding. Panic spread among the others, and Olana shouted Alex''s name, accompanied by Emily''s alarmed voice. Olana cast a spell to contain the ball, but it wasn''t enough, and the spell was destroyed. They feared being consumed by the uncontrollable elemental ball. Just as the situation seemed dire, the classroom doors swung open, and Arnold Frey, the director of EIL, entered, raising his hand in Alex''s direction. A spell was directed at Alex, and his elemental ball began to decrease in size. Olana joined in, assisting with her own spell, until the ball finally disappeared. Exhausted, Alex fainted, and Arnold commanded Olana to take him to the hospital. Olana nodded and swiftly carried Alex away, with Emily following close behind. In the classroom, only Samantha, Arnold Frey, and Max remained. Arnold took a seat, coughing and looking visibly tired. Max offered to help, but Arnold got up once again. Max took that as his cue to leave the room. As he gathered his belongings, Samantha, the only person left in the room, asked him, "Max, do you think Alex is scary?" Max paused, looked at Samantha, and replied, "No, I think he is terrifying." With those words, he left the classroom. Despite the day''s unexpected turn, Max knew that the most challenging part was yet to come. He proceeded as usual to the cathedral, making his way to the third floor and entering a spacious room filled with an abundance of books and manuscripts. In the center of the room sat Bishop Marley, a man in his 50s with greying hair, adorned in the green robes of the Church. Max respectfully approached him and greeted the Bishop, saying, "Hello, Bishop. I have come here today to seek your help and guidance once more." Bishop Marley, who had been engrossed in writing and reading the papers on the table, paused and looked up at Max. As he stood up, he asked, "Tell me, Max, what is troubling you?" Max''s nerves intensified, and he replied, "Some classmates have asked for my assistance." Listening attentively, Bishop Marley responded, "Helping friends can lead to long and fortuitous relationships." Encouraged by his words, Max continued, "Yes, and it is because of that that I''m here today. They informed me that in the church warehouse, currently under construction, they heard terrifying tera roars. They are requesting your assistance." Bishop Marley''s expression darkened, and he spoke with a menacing voice, "And do you believe these people?" Sensing the escalating tension in the room, Max hurriedly said, "At first, I didn''t believe them either, but then they showed me a recording of the roar, and..." Before Max could elaborate further, Bishop Marley interrupted loudly, exclaiming, "Stop! Are you telling me they recorded this alleged roar?" Max nodded, his fear intensifying as he had never witnessed Bishop Marley so angry. After a brief silence, Bishop Marley spoke again, his tone composed. He said, "Well, Max, if you believe them, then I will believe them too. I will provide assistance. However, I need to know every detail." Surprised and relieved by the bishop¡¯s response, Max eagerly replied, "Of course! They told me that there are live teras in the warehouse, and the guards have been using mimic cubes to mask the roars with construction noises. They also mentioned a man who followed them, was wearing the Ashen Blades uniform." Bishop Marley smiled and asked one more question, "And who informed you of all this?" Max hesitated briefly and then confessed, "It was Alex Stern and Dr. Feller''s son." Bishop Marley''s smile disappeared, and he spoke with a serious expression, addressing Max, "Do you expect me to believe that those two individuals whom you despise could convince you to come and discuss this matter with me?" Max immediately regretted not mentioning Emily''s involvement and hurriedly added, "Emily was with them too..." Bishop Marley looked at him intently and said, "Max, there is no shame in protecting the ones we love. However, you must understand that I would never put your loved ones in a dangerous situation." Pausing for a moment, he continued, "Max, can I trust you with a secret?"
