《Path of Mana》
Chapter 1: Emergence of Mana
Amidst the bustling market, filled with neon lights, blaring vendors, and the sounds of an ever-evolving metropolis, Adam''s nimble form danced. He darted between people, his agility weaving a narrative of survival and tenacity. His fingers deftly swiped an electronic device from a stall, while his other hand surreptitiously transferred the wares of unsuspecting customers into his own pocket. He moved with grace and intent, a phantom in plain sight.
A sudden shout tore through the ambient noise. "Thief! Stop him!"
Like a startled animal, Adam''s head jerked around to find the vendor he''d just robbed pointing directly at him. The vendor, a burly man with a cybernetic arm, pushed people aside, charging like an enraged bull. Without hesitation, Adam sprang into action. His feet carried him swiftly, instinct guiding each calculated step and turn.
He leaped onto a stack of crates, his shoes barely making a sound, then jumped off onto a speeding hoverbike. The rider, startled, lost his balance and crashed into a pile of fruit, but Adam didn''t look back. He threaded his way through narrow alleyways, his breaths deep and measured. The background noises of the city faded as he distanced himself from the market. He knew every nook, every hidden pathway; this city, in all its stark contradictions, was his playground.
Finally, Adam reached the base of a worn building, marked by the passage of time. He glanced back once. The market and his pursuers were now hidden from view. He didn''t linger; quickly he began his climb. It felt routine, like a practiced motion of muscle and memory. Reaching the top, he pulled himself over the ledge and lay there, gulping in deep breaths of relief.
From this vantage point, the vast city spread out beneath him. The setting sun painted the skyline in muted tones of orange and pink. Skyscrapers stood tall, their reflective surfaces dimly capturing the sky''s colors. Below, the streets were a mix of movement and noise, but up here, it was peaceful. The distinct divisions between the city''s elite districts and the bustling common areas were visible, yet everything felt far away and almost unimportant.
Sitting up, Adam checked the items he''d taken. They''d serve him well, providing food for the night. But as he looked out over the city, an emptiness settled in him. The repetitive cycle of theft and evasion wasn''t enough. He yearned for something more meaningful, a direction, perhaps even a destiny.
In the distance, the grand structure of ManaTech, Inc. stood tall, its pinnacle touching the clouds. As the setting sun''s rays caught the building, it shimmered, a beacon of hope and innovation.
Adam sighed, a mix of envy and ambition simmering within. He couldn''t have known then that the tides of destiny were already in motion, propelling him into a world far beyond his imagination. For now, he simply took a moment, absorbing the beauty of the city at dusk, seeking solace in the fleeting peace it offered.
The ManaTech tower stood dominant, rising tall and unyielding against the city skyline. A fusion of glass, steel, and myriad LEDs, it shimmered and throbbed with life. High on its topmost floor, behind layers of security and fortified barriers, Dr. James Teller surveyed his domain. All around him lay a precise maelstrom of tubes, gadgets, screens, and holographic displays that fluttered with figures, charts, and esoteric symbols.
The bright overhead light highlighted the age spots and thin skin on James''s hands as they moved swiftly over the glass panel. Each tap was confident, refined by years of practice. Machinery around him responded with a thrumming chorus, rising and falling in rhythm as if attuned to his very heartbeat. In the midst of it all, the culmination of his years: a vial shimmering in the glow, seeming almost to breathe with a light of its own, as if a star were trapped within.
He held the vial up with two hands to steady it, light reflecting off the surface of the contents, momentarily blinding him. He blinked away the glare, revealing eyes surrounded by a web of fine lines, yet they glinted with determination and mischief. The clinical chill of the room did nothing to dampen the flush of excitement that colored his cheeks. Raising his arms up, a patchwork of old scars and faded blue veins greeted him¡ªeach telling tales of trials past. His grip on the vial was firm, yet gentle, like a maestro about to coax a symphony from silence.
As he tipped the vial back and its contents reached his parched mouth, almost instantly, the lab seemed to peel away. Steel and glass faded into streaks of vibrant colors, crisscrossing, weaving, connecting. The tower, the sprawling city below, even the very air he breathed, they all wove into an intricate web of energy. He felt not as a man peering out at the world, but as if he had become the universe itself, understanding its every pulse and whisper.
He saw the world not just as it was but as it could be. Cities transformed, industries reshaped, societies reformed. The Mana was more than just power; it was potential. It promised a future where scarcity was replaced by abundance, where barriers were mere opportunities waiting to be surmounted. But it wasn''t just about progress; it was about evolution.
James felt himself standing at the precipice of that vision. He saw pathways, each branching and intertwining, some leading to enlightenment, others to oblivion. Every decision, every nuance mattered. The balance was delicate, and the stakes were immense.
Tears formed in his eyes, not from pain, but from the overwhelming beauty of it all. His heart raced as if it sought to keep up with the breakneck speed of his thoughts. And then, as suddenly as it had begun, the vision started to recede.
James was back in his lab, the world returned to its familiar form, but it was forever altered in his eyes. He steadied himself, gripping the edge of the table. The weight of his newly confirmed knowledge was both a burden and a gift. The challenge now was to harness this power and direct it toward the greater good.
James straightened, allowing the mana within to flood his senses. Gone was the nagging ache in his spine, the weary weight of age he¡¯d grown used to. Now, a rush of life surged within, each heartbeat a resonant drumbeat echoing in his chest. His fingers, once crippled by time, were supple and deft. And while the rebirth of his body was profound, it was the newfound clarity in his mind that left him awestruck.
Every sight was crystal-clear, colors popping with a vibrancy he hadn¡¯t known in decades. Subtle sounds, previously lost to him, now reached his ears: the gentle whisper of air, the distant hum of city life, the rhythmic heartbeats of lab assistants. Breathing in, he was met with a cacophony of scents ¨C sharp metal, antiseptic cleansers, and the musty charm of old books.
A test step confirmed the stability of his legs. They felt ready to run, jump, even dance ¡ª activities that had once seemed consigned to his past.
His reflection in the window brought a tear to his eye. The potential perils of Mana were no mystery to him, nor were the immense possibilities it offered. And as he watched the cityscape, bathed in the glow of the setting sun, James felt the weight of responsibility. The plaza below was alive with preparations, and the vast holographic display from ManaTech, Inc. beamed its promise: "The Next Evolution of Humanity: Unveiling Tomorrow!"
Tomorrow, James'' dream would either lift humanity to new heights or plunge it into chaos. The world was on the cusp of change, and James was at its helm.
Adam gripped the edge of the building, the cold touch of its metal frame contrasting sharply with the residual warmth of the day. From this vantage point, the city''s ceaseless noise became a subdued, distant murmur. In the waning light, a particular holographic display stood out, sharp and arresting. Emblazoned across the horizon was a bold proclamation from ManaTech, Inc.: "The Next Evolution of Humanity."
He blinked. While holographic advertisements were common, this was something else entirely. It wasn¡¯t the usual flashy showcase of products or celebrities. Instead, it was a subtle, pulsating display, like a heart in mid-beat. Shapes and patterns shifted and melded, hinting at a fusion of nature and technology.
Curiosity welled up in Adam. Was this the heralding of some technological marvel? The rough edges of his life hadn''t granted him the luxury to ponder the leaps of science and innovation. His days were defined by agility, wit, and quick reflexes. But this¡ªthis hinted at a promise, a future just beyond his grasp.

He pulled out the handheld he swiped earlier, his fingers deftly moving over the surface. Within moments, he''d pulled up every bit of information available on this upcoming event. It was all quite secretive, but the buzz was undeniable. Whispers in the digital underbelly of the city spoke of something that wasn''t just a technological advancement but a leap in human evolution. ManaTech, Inc. had always been at the forefront, but this? This promised to be revolutionary.
A choice lay ahead of him. He could continue with his plans for the next day''s scores, or he could dive into this new world, this spectacle that seemed ready to redefine humanity''s very essence. But Adam, ever driven by a restless curiosity, felt a yearning to be there, to bear witness.
Climbing down from his perch, Adam melded into the shadows of the alleyways. The intricate pathways of the city were familiar territory, and he navigated them with practiced ease. Every corner held a story, every shadow a secret. And tomorrow, he intended to uncover the most significant one yet. As he moved, he missed the faint shimmer in the distance. High up in ManaTech''s tower, a figure stood watching. The weave of fate had already cast its net, drawing together the threads of a visionary and a street-smart rogue. In the grand odyssey of what was to come, they would be central figures, and the unfolding of destiny was only just beginning.
As dawn painted the city, the plaza stirred with activity. This historical site, having witnessed countless gatherings and festivities, was once again the hub of transformation. Workers in synchronized effort were rigging equipment and stages, each ensuring perfection for the anticipated event. Excitement built with each passing hour. Vendors hawked unique merchandise branded with the word ¡°ManaTech¡±, children darted playfully amid the assembling crowd, and an electric energy pulsed through the atmosphere.
By midday, the vast plaza, renowned for its blend of polished stone and modern art installations, teemed with people. Hovering drones wove through the air, beaming the unfolding scene to countless viewers worldwide. Dominating the scene was a magnificent stage, its backdrop awash in the bold, unmistakable print: ¡°ManaTech, Inc.¡± Many had found the name of this leading-edge cybernetics and human-interface company curious, almost a playful nod to the worlds of gaming and fantasy. Yet, its significance was about to be unveiled.
As a hush settled, a singular figure ascended to the stage. Dr. James Teller, his posture radiating confidence, approached the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen," James began, his voice filled with anticipation, "for decades, we''ve dreamt of transcending nature''s boundaries. Today, I reveal our magnum opus: Mana."
As he named it, a holographic simulation blinked into existence. It depicted swirling particles and glowing pathways, all interconnected, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadow.
He paused to let the audience take in the sight, then continued, "Generations past whispered of magic, of a force called Mana in tales and games. We''ve taken inspiration from those dreams."
The simulation shifted, zooming in on meticulously designed nanobots, each pulsating with a faint light. "At its core," he elaborated, "Mana consists of these nanobots, each designed to harness the latent energy that resides in every iota of matter."
With a gesture, the simulation demonstrated the nanobots'' detailed designs ¡ª their internal reactors and communication channels ¡ª before panning out to a grander scale. "These tiny wonders can bind with every atom out there. But," his voice lowered, hinting at mystery, "their true magic emerges when they encounter life."
The holograph morphed into a depiction of human cells, the nanobots weaving among them. "In living beings, these nanobots form bonds, creating symbiotic relationships. With them, we don''t just harness energy; we shape and refine it, unlocking potentials we never imagined."
James inhaled deeply, letting the room absorb the gravity of his revelation. "This isn''t just another form of energy. It''s a transformation of humanity ¡ª no, a revolution in the very essence of matter and energy. It embodies nature''s vast wonders, melding seamlessly with our relentless pursuit of knowledge and mastery over the elements. It is smart matter, under humanity''s command.
The murmurs in the crowd grew louder, a mix of awe and disbelief. To emphasize his point, James raised a hand. Hovering above it, a shimmering orb of Mana appeared. There were audible gasps from the audience.
"To comprehend its scale," he continued, holding their rapt attention, "imagine countless nanobots. If each were a grain of sand, they would fill this city multiple times over, and that''s just in this small orb."
Without warning, he directed the Mana orb to a withered plant nearby. The crowd watched in astonishment as, upon contact, the plant revitalized instantaneously, bursting into full bloom. The plaza''s atmosphere shifted from awe to electric excitement.
He didn''t mention the staggering number of nanobots now interacting with the plant, considering it might overwhelm or frighten the onlookers at mana¡¯s replication speed. What would once have filled the city with sand in fact thousands of times over, would now be tens of millions as it infused the plant. Instead, he chose a grand finish.
"Behold the next phase in our evolution!" His voice carried a fervent passion. "With Mana, we heal, grow, and reinvent our very existence."
His eyes scanned the crowd. With his newly mana-enhanced perception letting him easily lock onto a familiar figure in the distance. Adam, hidden amidst the masses, was entranced. The potential of Mana, its allure, was undeniable.
James continued, explaining the rigorous process of synthesizing Mana, its applications from medical to industrial, and its potential to revolutionize every facet of life.
"And now," he said, his voice dripping with anticipation, "I offer one beta ticket. One will be a offered the unique opportunity to be a pioneer, to experience the power of Mana firsthand. An important choice to make. The first of many."
As he spoke these words, a small burst of energy shot up like a firework from the center of James¡¯ chest and flew high over the crowd, who quickly lost sight of it. Adam, lost in the spectacle, was startled when a glowing envelope immediately landed and, instinctually, he grasped it. Though he was amidst a large crowd, everybody around him seemed oblivious, still looking up into the sky, missing, or maybe not privy at all to the most sold-looking hologram he had ever seen as it popped up above the envelope to his touch. No, not a hologram. Solid? In a friendly fixed-width font:
You have encountered Mana
Do you wish to join The System?
YES NO
(Mana and The System ?2082 ManaTech, Inc. All Right Reserved.)
Adam stared at the question for a heartbeat, his thumb hovering over the solid-feeling button labeled "YES". Thoughts raced through his mind in a whirlwind. What did joining The System entail? Was it the beginning of a new existence for him, or perhaps just a dazzling show by James? There was no way to tell, but the very idea of being connected to something as profound as Mana was tantalizing.
He recalled his earlier days, filled with dreams of adventure and feats of heroism¡ªones that were often laughed off or overshadowed by the mundane aspects of daily life. And here he was, at the crossroads of an opportunity that promised those dreams in the form of tangible reality.
The ambient noise around him diminished as Adam experienced an enveloping warmth in his chest, kindling an excitement he hadn''t felt in years. It was the beckoning of potential, the siren call of the undiscovered. With newfound resolve, he pressed the "YES" button. The thrill of boundless possibilities was confirmed with a tactile sensation, but not with the button depressing as he anticipated, instead a shift in the very fabric of his surroundings, as if the whole world warped around the word instead, with everything but the YES resonating with a distinct click.
The moment his finger made contact, he felt a jolt of energy, not painful but invigorating, spread throughout his body. It felt as if every cell was waking up, greeting the dawn of a new day. A tingling sensation enveloped him, making the external world blur for a moment. As the sensation ebbed, he could feel the weight of the choice he''d made settle in his chest, a blend of exhilaration and trepidation.
His surroundings came back into focus, but the resonance of Mana persisted within him, a promise of the marvels to come. The world seemed sharper, more vibrant. The air, rich with a scent he couldn¡¯t previously detect. And a soft hum¡ªa frequency he hadn¡¯t been aware of, seemed to vibrate gently in his ears. This was his initiation, the commencement of a journey like no other.
High above the city, in his private observatory within the ManaTech tower, James perused a recording of the recent event''s aftermath. Multiple floating screens of pure mana painted the dimmed room with an ethereal glow, but one screen particularly held his attention ¡ª it tracked the singular Mana from then envelope he delivered.
A smirk, both pleased and a touch mischievous, curved James'' lips. "He''s more daring than I expected. A true pioneer," James remarked, noting how swiftly Adam had touched the "YES" option.
The System¡¯s AI, whom James had christened "Atlas", representative of Mana''s essence, took form as a gently radiant sphere. "Bravery, however inspiring, can at times mask sheer recklessness, James. Don¡¯t forget the gravity of what¡¯s at stake ¡ª for him and for ManaTech''s reputation."
James'' eyes, intense and unwavering, remained glued to the screen. "A game''s thrill lies in its unpredictability. Adam''s spirit and newfound Mana-enhanced prowess make him the ideal candidate. He''s searching for something... grander. We''ll show him the way." Pausing for effect, he added, "But first, let¡¯s acquaint him with the finer print. Activate the System''s End User License Agreement. He should know every facet of the life he¡¯s stepping into."
The AI hesitated momentarily, its orb-like form pulsating as if taking a deep breath, then intoned, "Initiating Beta protocol."
As the room dimmed to focus on the glowing projection of Adam, James, bathed in the ambient light, appeared contemplative. "A new chapter begins; a story of wonder, of discovery," he mused warmly. "Here''s to your grand journey, Adam. Welcome to The System."
Chapter 2: The End User License Agreement
The square took on a muted buzz as the aftermath of the grand unveiling of Mana resonated in the hearts and minds of those present. The neon glow of nearby signboards began their nightly flourish, casting an array of colors on the crowd. The animated discussions of the bystanders created an aura of anticipation mixed with disbelief. As the crowd dwindled, the square''s cobblestone floor once hidden by a sea of feet began to reappear.
Adam found himself leaning against a nearby pillar, losing track of time as he was ensnared in introspection. The alleys and markets had been his training grounds, teaching him caution and skepticism. Yet today, Mana''s allure had made him act impulsively. Why had he chosen ''YES'' without giving it a second thought?
The crowd dispersed further, transforming the bustling square into a near-empty space bathed in the soft luminescence of the evening. It was then that Adam''s gaze fell upon a mysterious sight. Where the grand stage once stood was now replaced by a subtly glowing tree, its bark shimmering in the twilight. Most of the few remaining passersby glanced at the tree, their reactions ranging from outright denial of its existence to sheer ambivalence or even a tinge of hostility towards this new, out-of-place entity.
The sight of the tree was an enigma. It towered above, larger than any tree Adam had ever seen within the confines of the city. And considering he''d never ventured beyond the city boundaries, this magnificent entity was, without doubt, the grandest tree he''d ever laid eyes on. Its expansive branches stretched outwards, silhouetted against the evening sky, each leaf shimmering as if kissed by stardust.
A realization struck him then. This was no ordinary tree, but what one afternoon¡¯s evolution made of the small, withering plant from the demonstration, now transformed by Mana''s touch into this colossal monument of nature. He could hear it, a gentle hum that emanated from the tree, soothing and inviting. It was as if the tree sang a silent lullaby, pulling him closer with every note. The resonance wasn''t just a sound, but an emotion, a beacon calling out to him.
Adam, lost in the sea of his thoughts and trained in the art of stealth, approached the tree from the shadows, moving with a grace that only one accustomed to being unseen could muster. It was as if an unspoken bond called him forth, while others found themselves subconsciously veering away.
As he got closer, Adam carefully examined the tree. Its leaves whispered of raw potential, the very embodiment of what he had hesitated over earlier. The gentle pulse of its glowing bark radiated promise. If Mana could transform a feeble plant into this beacon of life and potential, what wonders could it work on him? The tree stood as a testament to untapped possibilities, a being that had only just embarked on its incredible journey of evolution.
Intrigued, he reached out to touch it, but before his fingers made contact, a wisp of mana flowed from his eyes, illuminating the air around him. A system message flashed,
Skill Learned: ''Identify, Level 1''
Things infused with mana resonate with each other, transmitting understanding and knowledge.
Almost immediately, another message appeared
Unique Tree (Level 5). Disposition: Friendly, Curious.
Adam chuckled softly. The world he thought he knew had just grown infinitely more fascinating. The tree, with its friendly and curious disposition, beckoned him even closer. It seemed the tree was as curious about Adam as he was about it. There was a silent understanding, a bridge built on mutual curiosity and wonder.
Amidst the waning noise of the city below, Adam felt a pull towards the higher branches of the tree. As a rogue, he always found comfort in elevated spots, a haven where he could observe the world below without being seen. Using his nimble fingers and agile feet, he began to scale the giant. Each branch seemed tailored to his grip, as if the tree itself were guiding him upwards.
Settling on a sturdy branch high above, Adam found a comfortable spot. The city sprawled below him; its usual noise muted, replaced by the subtle rustle of leaves. Up here, the tree felt like a sanctuary ¡ª a steadfast protector in this overwhelming world. Today had been an overload, a barrage of sensations and revelations, and this moment of quietude provided the reprieve he so desperately needed.
While the tree stood tall and magnificent, perhaps it was just a tree. It hinted at deeper meanings and resonated with the promises of Mana and a new future. But Adam was weary of pondering. Now, all he truly sought was rest.
The soft glow from the city streets faintly reached his resting place. But up here, it was softer, less demanding. A subtle reminder of the world below, and the adventures that awaited. But for now, he simply needed sleep. And with that, he let himself drift off, finding peace in the tree''s embrace.
As soon as his consciousness paused, his senses jolted awake. Not to the rustling of leaves or the distant hum of the city, but to a vast nothingness that seemed to stretch endlessly in every direction. No walls, no floor, just boundless white. It wasn''t an empty room, it was the void of a blank canvas, filled only with potential.
His heart raced for a moment, the sudden transition from sleep to this... place causing a spike of adrenaline. But it wasn''t fear he felt; it was anticipation, a yearning to understand. That hunger had been the driver behind most of his life''s decisions, always asking the next question, always seeking the unseen path.
A shimmer caught his eye, coalescing into a beacon of golden light in the room''s center. The brilliance wasn¡¯t blinding but inviting. Slowly taking shape into a sphere, with its form constantly shifted, as if composed of countless golden particles, moving fluidly as a dance of sunlit dust motes in a sunbeam.
"Welcome, Adam. I am Atlas. I am The System." Atlas''s voice resonated, deep and omnipresent. Not through ears, but directly into Adam''s very being. "You stand at the doorway of The System you have accepted. But before you proceed, you must understand our End User License Agreement. It is not just a formality but a foundation. Your understanding and agreement are crucial."
Adam''s eyes darted around the expanse, searching for an escape or a way back. Instinctively, he recoiled from attention; being in the limelight was anathema to him. But now, facing what seemed like some kind of cosmic authority figure, even worse. But, in the back of his mind, he knew he''d come too far to turn back now. It was a rare moment where the rogue, the thief, the child of the streets felt vulnerable. It was no longer just about stealing or surviving; this was about evolving.
He inhaled deeply, his chest rising and falling with a newfound resolve. "Okay, Atlas," he murmured, squaring his shoulders. "Let''s begin."
Just when Adam was bracing himself to take on whatever Atlas was about to present, suddenly, with a pop from within his own body. Drawn from the very essence of his core, a gentle blue light started to emerge. It grew and floated beside him in its calming spherical presence, similar to Atlas but way smaller and less intimidating.
Adam instinctively stepped back, his hand reaching out, trying to touch the ephemeral ball of light, but it gently avoided his touch, maintaining a delicate distance. It pulsed with a frantic rhythm that somehow made the stark environment feel more dangerous.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, Adam," the entity hummed in a melodically harmonious voice that both soothed and invigorated. "Don¡¯t enter into an agreement without representation! Allow me. Oh, right, I am Lumis, your Representative. While Atlas here," Lumis gave a subtle reverent nod toward the golden entity, "represents The System, ManaTech, and even the Founder Himself, as his personal AI, I am yours, and may be entirely trusted. I am solely for you."
Adam''s brows furrowed in confusion, trying to piece together this new revelation. "You''re... my AI Lawyer?"
Lumis glowed brighter for a brief second. "More than a that, I am here to act as your guide, representative, mentor, and assistant. But yeah, for now, I¡¯m here to ensure that your interests and well-being are prioritized. While Atlas can, ok, well he can likely be trusted to carry out this negotiation, he represents that big towering building you¡¯re always looking up to and their interests. I am here to serve yours. You can trust me."
Adam eyed Atlas warily, but eyed Lumis even more warily. Who trusts somebody¡ªsomething¡ªthat literally says Trust me? Twice? As a test, he said "This place... what is it?"
Lumis pulsed gently, casting a soft blue shade on the white expanse as if scanning it. "This is a manifestation of The System, tailored for each user''s introduction. We''re in a realm designed to facilitate a clear understanding of what you''re about to re-agree to. I''m here to help interpret and navigate."
Adam, feeling the weight of this surreal environment, nodded slowly. "Re-agree?"
Lumis moved as if in a nod, as spheres do, apparently. ¡°Yes, you pressed YES. But, you were quite ill-informed. It was a test of curiosity, of initiative, maybe, but not a bindable agreement. This one will be. Or, if we reach am impasse, your taste of mana will be rejected and returned, and you¡¯ll proceed on with your life as it was before.¡±
Adam, feeling the weight of this surreal environment, and his rash decision, nodded slowly. He still didn¡¯t trust anything in this room, but, he decided to throw a "I''m glad you''re here, Lumis."
The blue entity seemed to shimmer in acknowledgment. "Whenever you''re ready, we''ll begin."
And with a deep breath, Adam prepared himself to dive into the intricacies of some raw text sprawling agreement he was sure was about to scroll in front of him.
The overwhelming brightness of the vast white room began to subside, giving way to a swirling canvas of colors and sensations that seemed to ripple with meaning. Atlas began, "Adam, what we''re about to embark on is more than just a mere agreement. This is a complex dance of understanding ¡ª a melding of intent, trust, commitment, and potential. Unlike traditional negotiations which happen with words and written clauses, here, we''ll be delving deep.¡±

¡°Because of the mana you took in, and because I am, fundamentally, made of, let¡¯s say, a higher-level of mana, I possess the capability to interact directly with the fabric of your thoughts," Atlas continued, a shimmer playing across his surface hinting at amusement. "Your ideals, aspirations, fears, and even the underlying motivations behind that singular YES press. From this intricate tapestry, I''ll weave together an understanding, seeking a harmonious agreement between you and ManaTech, Inc. that both satisfies your desires and aligns with our aims."
He paused, the colors in the room pulsating in tandem with his words, and added, "Think of it as a mental chess game, a simultaneous push and pull where we negotiate not with words but with feelings, memories, hopes, and more. It''s profound, intense, and unlike anything you''ve ever experienced. With counsel¡¯s permission?" He seemed to nod his sphere at Lumis, awaiting it give a confirming gesture.
Then, Adam found himself further immersed in a world that shifted and molded around him. The boundaries between reality and the ethereal faded as he experienced visions, sounds, and sensations. A city, no his city¡¯s skyline built itself brick by brick at a pace only a fast-forward button could achieve. He felt the weight of the bricks in his hands, the sweat on his brow, the joy of seeing something rise from nothing.
The panorama of humanity''s possible future unfurled before Adam in a sweeping expanse of visions. He first saw humanity in its infancy of mana usage: individuals harnessing basic streams of power, mending minor cuts and ailments, and igniting small glimmers of light in their hands. Their faces lit up in wonder, as if witnessing magic for the first time.
The visions shifted and evolved. He saw grand architects shaping entire landscapes with but a gesture, artists giving life to their creations, making them dance and sing, and explorers opening portals to other realms, their footsteps marking new worlds. The wonders they conjured were awe-inspiring, the sheer scale of their achievements a testament to the boundless potential mana offered.
But with great power came the temptation for misuse. Adam witnessed the darker side: individuals consumed by their newfound prowess, attempting to ascend to godhood, their ambitions unchecked, and their actions wreaking havoc. The raw energy of mana, in undisciplined hands, had the potential to reshape or even destroy.
It was here that The System intervened. It emerged not as a rigid cage, but as a guiding force. Adam sensed its purpose: to ensure that the boundless power of mana wasn''t unleashed in one uncontrollable torrent. Instead, it acted as a regulator, a mentor, gradually introducing users to their abilities. It set challenges, established benchmarks, and rewarded accomplishments. With each level attained and achievement unlocked, a user''s conduit to mana expanded, allowing them access to more potent spells and abilities.
Adam blinked in surprise, trying to digest the implications. At first, doubt shadowed his thoughts. The System as a perpetual observer, always watching, judging? It seemed invasive, almost dictatorial. But as the nuances of its purpose unraveled, a dawning realization settled in his mind. The System wasn¡¯t simply a guardian of power; it played a far more nuanced role. It cultivated growth hand-in-hand with responsibility. Ensuring that as one¡¯s abilities expanded, so did their moral compass and wisdom. It wasn''t about restricting power, but guiding its wielder towards a path of purpose, discernment, and restraint. By the end, Adam grudgingly accepted that maybe, just maybe, this was the only way it could be. His acceptance was noted, and the contract continued to form.
Throughout these visions, he felt a deep emotional undercurrent. He experienced humanity''s elation in their successes, their despair in setbacks, and, most importantly, their indomitable will to persevere and evolve. With every scene, the core message was clear: Mana held the promise of godlike power, but The System was there to ensure this power was unlocked with wisdom and grace.
The visions began to subside, giving way to the voice of Atlas, whose timbre now seemed more profound after the silent "conversation" they''d just had. "Mana isn''t just raw power, Adam," Atlas intoned, resonating through the vast expanse. "It mirrors the user''s internal strength and resolve. To truly tap into its depths, one''s spirit must be in a constant state of refinement."
Adam felt the ebb and flow of sensations, mirroring the progress of his journey. They intensified during moments of personal growth and self-realization, but ebbed when he clung to old habits and doubts. One particular doubt loomed large: his life as a rogue, skulking in the shadows, thieving for survival. Was he fit for such power, given his dubious morals?
Lumis, with his ethereal presence, floated by his side, serving as an interpreter of sorts. "A clause addressing the synergy between personal evolution and power," his voice echoed softly, providing context. "It also touches upon moral compass and intent," he added, sensing his introspection. "Your reservations are not going unnoticed."
Adam nodded, feeling a mix of relief and trepidation. His path as a thief was now under scrutiny, and he wondered if his past would hinder his potential future with Mana. Would The System require him to reform? The weight of these considerations bore down on him as they navigated the intricacies of the unspoken contract.
In the alleyways of his mind, Adam grappled with his past. He had never reveled in the title of ''thief'' or taken pride in dubious moral decisions. It wasn¡¯t a matter of enjoyment, but of necessity. The unforgiving streets of the city hadn¡¯t offered him the luxury of choice. Every pocket picked, every silent entry into an unsuspecting home, had been driven by the primal urge for survival. In a world that often felt cold and indifferent, he did what he believed he must to endure another day. But with the promise of Mana and what it entailed, would his past actions now become an insurmountable barrier?
The scenes noticed his thoughts and morphed to depict various moral dilemmas. A man hesitating before striking another, individuals choosing to aid strangers, communities standing up against oppressors. The core principle of non-aggression was elegantly portrayed, where power wasn''t wielded for harm but for defense or mutual achievement.
Atlas''s tone grew deeper, "The essence of morality is indeed thus. You¡¯ve always known. Agreed."
Lumis'' soft blue glow brightened, seemingly conversing with Atlas at a frequency beyond Adam''s perception. Every now and then, a scene would replay or modify, indicating changes being made in real-time based on Adam''s reactions.
The narrative then flowed into communities of people helping one another, guiding novices, sharing experiences, and forming bonds. But as quickly as it began, Atlas interrupted, "Ah, sorry, a point to amend. As of now, you stand alone in this Beta. The aspect of community will take shape in due time, with your help. But we still need to reach agreement. Solo ventures are perfectly acceptable, though the path can be lonesome."
Adam felt a pang of pride, realizing the weight of being the first, the forerunner of this new world.
Throughout the intricate dance of negotiations, Lumis became more than just a guide; he was Adam''s conscience made manifest. Every fleeting memory, buried belief, or deeply-held value that Adam bore, Lumis would highlight and magnify. When Adam''s memories hinted at moments of compassion in the ruthless world of thievery, Lumis pointed them out, drawing a contrast between the deeds and the intention behind them. Every rare but powerful opinion Adam had ever held about power, responsibility, and the potential of Mana was dissected and emphasized. Lumis illuminated the juxtapositions in Adam''s life, making it clear that he was not just a product of his past but a complex tapestry of desires and potentials.
Whenever doubt clouded Adam''s thoughts or a certain clause seemed at odds with his unspoken values, Lumis would gently redirect the flow, ensuring Adam''s comfort and comprehension. With every nuanced observation, Adam felt a growing resonance with the AI. Lumis''s unwavering focus on Adam''s core beliefs and his adeptness at navigating them built a foundation of genuine trust. And although Adam''s voice remained a rare instrument in this orchestration, the AI duo seemed to understand him even without it, crafting the EULA to match the symphony of his soul.
As the spectacle wound down, the room gradually reverted to its pristine blank state, but the weight of what he''d experienced pressed on Adam''s mind.
Atlas spoke, finality in his voice, "I hereby agree that the EULA we''ve experienced together here is indeed still an embodiment of Dr. James Teller''s vision, tailored to ensure that the system benefits all parties involved and will help you grow into your potential.¡± For the first time in what felt like at least a day of ¡°negotiation¡± the room was silent, prompting Adam¡¯s verbal response.
Adam took a moment, allowing the rush of emotions, visions, and sounds to settle. Beside him, Lumis pulsed calmly, also awaiting his response.
Finally, with a determination molded from the spectacle he''d just witnessed, and already seeing the possibilities of the future, Adam spoke, "I understand The System. I accept."
Atlas shimmered with approval, and Lumis glowed even brighter.
With that, Adam''s awareness surged back into his physical body, bringing with it the visceral weight of what had transpired. He opened his eyes, feeling disoriented. The whiteness of the room, the echoing words of Atlas, and Lumis''s guiding light felt like a dream. Yet the experience was deeply etched into his psyche. As if he could feel the new contract interact with his very being.
For a few moments, he just lay there, taking in the rough texture of the bark beneath him. The distant hum of city traffic, a siren wailing somewhere far away, and the murmur of voices from the streets below filled his ears. All these familiar city sounds felt new, invigorated with meaning. The subtle vibration of the massive tree trunk, resonating yet counterattacking the city¡¯s noises with a comforting hum, grounded Adam further back into the reality of the tree. Everything was as it had been, he guessed, yet nothing felt the same.
He sat up slowly, his fingers brushing against his shirt, feeling the physicality of it all. As his senses reconnected with the world, a pang of loneliness struck him. The profound and surreal journey with Lumis, followed by his sudden absence, left a weird void. Lumis, his new friend, and advocate. Where was he?
A pang of odd yearning filled him. He did not have many friends. AI or not, Lumis was actually one of the first entities in his life that seemed to maybe, possibly, have his back, without question. "Lumis?" Adam whispered, half-expecting no answer.
Suddenly, a DING! echoed in his mind, accompanied by the familiar blue hue he''d come to associate with Lumis. Solid black System Text scrolled out of much smaller Ball of Lumis, before his eyes.
Congratulations!
You''ve learned the skill: ''Summon AI, Level 1''.
Harness the bond formed with Lumis, your AI companion. With this skill, summon Lumis at will for guidance, consultation, or comic relief.
Adam smiled. "Wait, was that you that dinged? Or The System?"
"Er, me. Why? Pitch wrong? I was trying to make it pleasant based on the average pitch of the first note of your favorite songs." Lumis responded, his ethereal light dancing.
Adam grinned wider, taking in the reality of it all. Lumis was not just a transient presence in a surreal negotiation room. He was real. A part of his new journey. And he knew all of his favorite songs? Things to dive into later. "Yeah, we gotta work on that. Ding is something a bell does, not a glowing bubble talking thing."
Lumis pulsed, casting a soft blue shade over Adam, "Your adventure is just beginning. We¡¯ll have time for customizations along the way. After all, the agreement you forged is all about customizing your life¡¯s experiences and possibilities. But allow me some freedom of creativity too. Next time I¡¯ll try a different sound."
Adam nodded, contemplating the weight behind Lumis''s words. He felt eager. The ding can wait. The enormity of his newfound purpose pressing down on him: Evolve. The distant memories of just yesterday ¨C or was it longer? ¨C echoed in his mind. Time seemed distorted, stretched by the vastness of the revelations he had experienced. Yes, there were remnants of his past life, threads left dangling, ties that needed to be cut, some that needed mending before he could fully embark on this new path.
With each step down the tree, Lumis''s gentle radiance accompanied him, infusing the world around with a new light. Every shadow hinted at secrets, every breeze whispered tales of adventures yet to come. As he touched the ground, the city pulsed with life, an intricate tapestry of challenges, wonders, and mysteries. And Adam stood at its heart, poised on the precipice of an epic journey, leaving readers yearning to discover every twist and turn with him.
Chapter 3: Run and Realizations
The shimmering golfball that was Lumis bobbed gracefully around a casual swipe Adam tried. As with each time Adam reached out, Lumis slid away, as if they existed just a breath apart. In the beginning it was genuine curiosity. Was Lumis solid, cold, hot? He still didn¡¯t know. The edges of Adam''s lips twitched upward; it was, he realized, a game to them both.
"You''re really good at this dodge thing, you know," Adam commented, feigning annoyance but failing to suppress a chuckle.
Lumis''s form brightened, casting a soft glow on the path. "Well, I''ve had a whole day''s practice. Give or take."
Adam raised an eyebrow, his intrigue piqued. "Do you possess innate knowledge about Mana, being what you are?¡± he inquired, genuinely curious. While Lumis was a product of this new substance, Adam wondered if his companion had spent the day gaining a deeper understanding of its nuances. With his own body now intertwined with this enigmatic force, Adam naturally felt a powerful urge to grasp its intricacies.
Lumis seemed to consider the question for a moment, the light of his form fluctuating. "Ah, Mana," he said with an amused tone. "I was, in a manner of speaking, born just yesterday. But I was indeed born from Mana. So I can assume a bit. But, I am like you¡ªa lot¡ªmade of mostly your thoughts, emotions, a smidge of your attitude¡ªoh, and the knowledge of humanity up to about 60 years ago."
The curious twist in Adam''s mouth deepened. "Why only up to 60 years ago?" he pressed.
Lumis emitted a soft sigh, the light around him dimming momentarily. "Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe that''s all the data ManaTech could acquire?"
Adam pondered this, his eyes narrowing slightly. "But you can help me understand it better?"
Shifting in his ever-fluctuating form, Lumis gave off a vibe of excitement. "Definitely. I might have protocols to help you navigate the system. Plus, asking questions, making you think, helping you learn."
"So, Mana¡" Adam pressed on, "it''s everywhere already? But restricted?"
Lumis paused, the glow around him softening to a gentle hue. "No, not really. Someday, I¡¯m sure. That¡¯s the goal. Right now, I think it¡¯s you, that tree we just came from, and James, of course. Maybe some other ManaTech earlier testers. But knowledge about Mana is both present, because I am it, and limited, because they¡¯re messing with both of our potential. You understand why. It was all in that agreement. The potential power."
The city was alive with sound as they moved through it. Advanced propulsion vehicles gave off a gentle whirr, overhead drones hummed rhythmically, and snippets of conversation hinted at a world constantly in motion. Every corner was bathed in the glow of holographic advertisements, each skyscraper reaching for the heavens seemed to be alive with augmented realities¡ªreserved for those with the right gear to perceive them.
But as they ventured further, the bright glow of the city''s heart began to dim. The towering, luminescent giants gave way to shadows of the past: weathered buildings that had seen better days, streets that no longer gleamed but were instead coated in the patina of neglect.
In the distance, the ever-growing tree stood as both a marvel and a warning. It wasn''t just a testament to Mana¡¯s evolution, but a gauge of the city''s transformation. Each new branch, each added height, marked ManaTech¡¯s ever-growing footprint, a stark reminder of the relentless march of the future into the now.
Amidst the progression of the city''s character, Lumis floated beside Adam, his radiant form undulating gently. Adam''s fingers twitched again, a persistent urge to touch the glowing figure.
"So just tell me. If I took you by surprise, what would I actually feel if I touched you?" Adam pondered aloud, casting a sidelong glance at Lumis.
Lumis brightened a shade. "Premise incorrect. You could never take me by surprise. But, while I can manipulate Mana to become tangible objects, smart matter, or even enhance your physical attributes, right now, I''m just directing subtle beams of light only at your retinas. That''s why others don''t notice me and why I seem to move at the speed of light¡ªbecause I am!"
Adam absorbed this, his instincts already on high alert, eyes darting around to see if anybody was indeed watching them¡ªor if they were pointing and laughing and the guy appearing to talk to himself. Yet, the city''s inhabitants were engrossed in their own worlds, none paying heed to the man conversing with himself. It was all too common in this age, with AI companions and devices pinned to shirts or built into all sorts of interfaces. "So, could you fuse into my legs and make me faster!?" Adam queried, intrigued by the realm of possibilities.
A soft luminescence pulsed from Lumis. "I am already in your legs. Well, I could be, but right now I¡¯m spending most of our energy on being a thinking and talking light in your eyes. But harnessing Mana in this manner, by yourself, requires understanding and practice. Mana is throughout your body now, in every cell, every atom. Its potential is vast, and until you can instinctively harness it on your own, which will be a major evolution in your¡evolution, I can and will help. Your brain and nervous system is not yet equipt to entirely handle it, I can help guide and optimize its usage, as you want to try new things. I can help come up with some ideas too. Mana is and I am simply part of you now. I do like experiments, though, and enhancing your physical capabilities is one of the simpler applications we can explore together."
Their journey took deeper into the urban maze, further into the bowels of the city, where clean facades gave way to graffiti-streaked walls, signaling their descent into the city¡¯s underbelly. As they walked, Lumis guided Adam in understanding the nuances of Mana. "When you see system text," Lumis explained, "it''s simply my way of interpreting the data and presenting it directly to your vision. I¡¯m surprised you haven¡¯t asked yet, but check this out¡"
Before Adam could respond, Lumis concentrated his form, manifesting letters and symbols in front of Adam. It formed not only text, but a stylized sculpture of his own body.

Studying the presented numbers, Adam''s eyebrows knit together. "These numbers," he ventured cautiously, "are they... good?"
Lumis''s radiance softened. "In the realm of Mana, even the slightest edge over others can signify a world of difference. These stats are a testament to your life choices thus far¡ªyour body before it was even touched by Mana. They''re your foundation¡ªa platform that Mana can help enhance and build upon." He paused, pulsating gently as he scanned the city inhabitants nearby. "Today''s average human relies on technological crutches¡ªinterfaces, cybernetics, aids that, theoretically, we could easily disrupt, but might take some of them above 15 in some areas. The ideal non-aided human, untouched by Mana or technology, could achieve a score of 10 across all skills. Most of these around us? Likely a mere 7 in each category."
Lumis focused on Adam once again. "Your numbers, especially being above 10 in some crucial attributes, highlight the strength of your character. And your willpower, being a significant 20% higher than a peak non-Mana-infused human, is the very reason I probably can exist in this form already. It''s a testament to your potential, amplified perhaps by your status as a beta user. But that, I can''t say for certain."
Adam''s eyes lingered on the word "Karma," a term vaguely familiar yet mysterious in this context. Noticing his intrigue, Lumis swiftly crafted intricate patterns in the air, each design representing a facet of Karma''s significance.
"Throughout human history," Lumis began, "Karma has always signified the results of one''s actions, a cosmic cause-and-effect. In our world of Mana, it will likely serve as an indicator of the harmony between your intentions and the desires of Mana¡ªwell, ManaTech¡ªwell, James himself. As for James," Lumis paused, recalling their recent interaction with James'' AI, Atlas, "my hypothesis is that you''d garner more Mana or gain heightened control if your Karma aligns with James'' vision for humanity."
Adam absorbed this, pausing at a graffiti-covered wall to reflect. "So, by understanding and aligning with what some old man wants, I can influence this Karma and, in turn, shape my destiny?"
Lumis literally beamed. "Likely. Again, most of my hypotheses are based on our shared experiences, particularly what we discerned at the signing. Every intention, every action, casts its ripple in the vast ocean of Mana. Think of it like James and his AI directing a vast network through decentralized control over the countless nanobots that constitute Mana. The true challenge for them lies in maintaining this equilibrium, especially while the technology is still in the beta phase. Their success, while likely, isn¡¯t set in stone. After all, I am granted significant autonomy, as are you¨Cif you think about it, you are now essentially made of Mana as well. Although your very being is now intertwined with Mana, your essence and your thought patterns remain untouched. Still, our manipulation and application of Mana are governed by The System¡¯s rules, much like Earth¡¯s orbit around the Sun adheres to the laws of gravity."
Adam started a light jog. Lumis seamlessly vanished from sight, as his¡ªMana¡¯s¡ªinfluence became palpable. Melding with Adam''s legs, Lumis didn''t necessarily increase his speed, but every stride felt more effortless, each step imbued with a newfound grace.
The deeper they ventured into the city¡¯s unloved sectors, the more the environment seemed to shift around them. Streets once wide and bustling, narrowed into claustrophobic corridors where fractured remains of city lighting beacons provided dim, unreliable light. Ancient storm drains dripped, creating echoes, and forgotten fire escapes loomed overhead, like rustling skeletons clinging desperately to the sides of buildings.
Every so often, a metallic clang from some heavy machinery in the distance or a hushed whisper from a shadowy doorway punctuated his hearing, hinting at clandestine transactions and unseen watchers. A palpable tension was always in this part of the city, the sense of being on the fringes of order, in a realm where conventional rules had faded like old memories. Some storefronts, with fogged up windows, hinted at their previous lives: a faded sign for a pawn shop, a long-closed diner with chains stacked and left to gather dust.
With every step deeper into this area, Adam felt the rising unease of being closer to home. Here, the past seemed to lurk around every corner, a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities he once faced and the shadows he now sought to confront. With Mana. With Lumis by his side, the world felt both tangible and ethereal¡ªa blend of past, present, and future possibilities.
Adam noticed he had gotten faster as he jogged, easily sprinting at the effort of what used to be a brisk walk. With excitement, Adam asked, "So, what else can I do?", his breath steady after his effortless sprint.
Lumis reappeared in wisp form. "So far, your best superpower is that you can rest really, really well and recover efficiently. Mana''s constantly working to restore your body with endless energy."
"Like instant healing?" Adam asked, raising an eyebrow.
Lumis bobbed thoughtfully. "I don¡¯t know, I doubt it. Want to test?"
Without waiting for an answer, the two sparred. Adam lunged, ducked, and weaved, but Lumis evaded him with surreal ease. Suddenly, Lumis''s form solidified and tapped Adam. A light slap. It stung for a split second before fading.
Adam touched the spot, ¡°That didn¡¯t really prove anything. It was just a light tap.¡±
Lumis replied, ¡°True. I can¡¯t seem to really inflict any serious harm, especially not to you. We¡¯ll need to find another way to test the limits of your healing.¡±
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
Adam blinked, "Wait, you were solid that whole time? I just assumed it was the whole light show thing¡¡±
Lumis chuckled, ¡°Yeah, I¡¯m matter right now. I matter right now. What¡¯s the matter? Smart matter."
Adam found himself questioning AI humor, AI sanity? He went in for another strike, missing by a hair. "How do you dodge every move I make so effortlessly? I¡¯m not that slow, am I?¡±
¡°Oh, because I¡¯m in your head, remember? I¡¯m cheating. You''re a thief and I¡¯m a cheat," Lumis teased. "I told you I¡¯m like you but a better version of you, made from your thoughts but with the computational speed and power of enormous quantities of nanobots. Right now, we¡¯re all pilfering your thoughts.¡±
"You¡ª" Adam began.
In a synchronous blend of voices, eerily harmonizing yet distinct, they said together, "know what I''m about to do before I do."
Lumis glowed brighter, delight evident. ¡°Neat, huh?¡±
Adam mulled it over briefly. "Why am I not creeped out by this?"
Lumis responded with a playful tone, "Because you realize you have an upgraded version of your own mind as your ally and best friend, helping in ways you''ve never imagined possible. That''s me by the way! And you are loving it."
Adam nodded slowly, "True." Adam started to fear that maybe it wasn¡¯t AI humor earlier¨Cit was¨Chis terrible humor, echoed and multiplied by billions of computations or something.
There was a momentary silence before Adam''s next concern bubbled up. "Are you transmitting all my thoughts to ManaTech?"
Lumis''s glow took on a subtle shade. "No."
Adam let out a relieved breath. "Oh, good."
"Only your every action," Lumis clarified, almost apologetically. "But you knew that, right? You remember that contract?¡±
Adam''s eyes lit up in realization, a feeling of rightness that he experienced the contract but fuzziness on all the details. "Right, that''s how I level up¡ actions. Achievements."
Adam started to jog again. Lumis''s voice resonated in his right ear at first, and then in stereo, projecting only sound waves while he focused energy to his cardiovascular system and legs. "Regarding your abilities," Lumis began, his tone informative and oddly more professional again, "you''ve mostly rested since your introduction to Mana. Thus, you''ve started to hone your efficiency in sleep and rejuvenation¡ªand don¡¯t underestimate that. It is a very important physiological process. I would not actually be surprised if The System acknowledges your incredible ability to sleep deeply with some sort of skill some day. But keep it up, and even meditation, and this running, of course, and The System likely will."
Adam blinked, processing the information. "It felt like just one night. All consumed by the dreamscape Atlas made. How long was I out?"
Lumis paused, weighing his words. "Almost a week in that tree."
"A week?!" The shock propelled Adam forward harder, his legs finding a rhythm he hadn''t felt before. The ground seemed to fly beneath him, each stride stronger and yet more effortless than the last. There was no labored breathing, no burning in his muscles. Instead, an invigorating energy pulsed within him, harmonizing with his heartbeat.
The realization was like a gut punch, and his internal compass immediately oriented itself towards a familiar destination¡ªhome. Not a haven of warmth and comfort, but a den of deceit and manipulation, where his step-father waited, ever eager to claim the fruits of Adam¡¯s illicit endeavors. The place where Adam had always brought his stolen goods.
As Adam''s memories flickered, a series of images crossed his mind: cold, harsh eyes; a voice dripping with sarcasm and greed; a constant underlying threat that kept him compliant. That was "home" to him¡ªa sanctuary turned prison, governed by a step-father more crime boss than parent, running a game of coercion and control, forcing Adam into a life of unwilling servitude and treacherous tasks.
"You''re heading to him, aren''t you?" Lumis''s voice sounded in his head, neither accusing nor sympathetic, just a statement of fact. It was as if Lumis could glimpse the shadows that lurked in Adam''s past, yet chose not to cast any judgment.
Adam exhaled, acknowledging the truth in Lumis''s words. "Yeah, it''s complicated."
Lumis continued, voice even, "Just remember, you''re not the same person you were a week ago. Or even a day ago."
Adam pondered that, allowing the reality to settle within him as he raced forward. The looming confrontation with his step-father felt both inevitable and frightening. But with Lumis by his side, he felt an inkling of newfound strength. The game, it seemed, had changed.
As Adam ran, Lumis spoke up, distracting him from his thoughts and explaining the sensations he was feeling. "I am integrating with your bloodstream, enhancing your muscles'' aerobic capacity. It minimizes the shift to anaerobic activity, even as you accelerate."
With each stride, Adam delved deeper into Lumis''s words, sensing their veracity. The more he ran, the sharper his mind became too, the world transforming into a vast landscape of learning with every step, as Lumis continued his lecture series. Traditional education had eluded Adam, he had never spent more than a week in school. Now, Lumis was his gateway to knowledge. The unfamiliar terms "aerobic" and "anaerobic" cascaded through his mind, their meanings unraveling seamlessly as Lumis spoke, imparting a spontaneous biology lesson as they moved. He envisioned the wealth of stories and literature from the world''s golden era¡ªthe early 21st century¡ªnow accessible to him. It was a feeling of being dwarfed by history yet empowered by potential.
Engrossed in this newfound understanding, the rhythmic beat of his footfalls became a distant lullaby. It was only when he was nearly abreast of a tense situation that his attention snapped back to the present. An elderly woman, her face shadowed with dread, was being threatened by a wiry man with unkempt hair, a jagged scar across his cheek, brandishing a knife menacingly. Its shimmering edge gleamed menacingly under the streetlights. But it wasn''t just any knife¡ªit bore the unmistakable design of a NanoBlade, the pioneering marvel from ManaTech.
For a split second, echoes of the old Adam reverberated within him. Just a week prior, his first instincts would have been to gauge the worth of the knife and the purse, measuring for any potential profit gained against any risk, deciding whether to ignore, or perhaps even capitalize on the situation. Yet now, with Lumis''s influence, recent awakenings, and the subtle nudge of Karma, a different impulse took shape. He could step in¡ªnot solely for personal gain, but also driven by a budding sense of morality. Lumis¡¯s earlier assessment of his attributes bolstered his confidence against this would-be assailant.
Adam''s decision was swift. He approached the scene, his intent clear, ready to utilize his newfound abilities and knowledge. The man with the knife was about to face an opponent unlike any he had ever encountered before.
The aggressor, sizing up the new variable in his equation, shifted his attention from the old woman to Adam, a sneer forming on his lips. But before he could react, Adam lunged. He aimed a precise fist strike at the man''s arm. But the thug was quicker than he appeared, slashing the knife across Adam¡¯s shoulder. The sting was sharp, a warm rush of blood following, but Adam didn¡¯t falter.
Adam darted left, then right, evading the thug''s strikes with a nimbleness born from the Mana, amplifying Adam¡¯s will to move with Lumis¡¯s guidance of energies. The man''s frustration grew with every missed attack, making his actions increasingly wild and erratic. In a desperate swing, he Managed to land a punch square on Adam''s jaw, the force of which would have floored any ordinary man. Adam staggered but remained on his feet, Mana anchoring him.
Seeing his moment, Adam closed in, wrapping his hand around the wrist holding the knife and, with a twist and a sharp pull, disarmed the assailant. The NanoBlade, ManaTech''s once-pioneering product, was now in his possession.
The tables turned, the thug''s arrogance evaporated, replaced with apprehension. Before he could gather himself for another attack, a voice bellowed from a distance, ¡°Hey! What''s going on there?¡± The thug, realizing the odds were no longer in his favor, turned on his heel and disappeared into the maze of alleyways.
Catching his breath, Adam glanced around, searching for the old woman. To his surprise, she was nowhere to be seen. "Figures," he muttered with a wry smile, "Not even a ''thank you''". Still, holding the NanoBlade and feeling the twinge from his wounds, Adam couldn''t help but feel a surge of confidence. With Lumis by his side, he was only beginning to discover the potential within himself.
Adam didn''t hesitate, perceiving the attention that was surrounding him. He darted around the nearest corner. Just ahead, the skeletal framework of a dilapidated building under renovation loomed. The glint of metal scaffolding caught his eye, and he sprinted towards it, ascending with an ease that surprised even him.
Once he reached a stable platform, Adam settled down, trying to steady his racing heart, the height providing a temporary sanctuary. He took a deep breath, allowing the crisp air to cool the sweat on his brow.
As the remnants of the encounter echoed in his mind, a profound digital inscription materialized before him:
Karma earned. Good deeds are rewarded.
The words didn''t merely present themselves; they seemed to weave into the very fabric of his being. Almost instantly, from the direction he had been running from all day, a surge of foreign Mana raced towards him, merging seamlessly with his core until he could no longer distinguish it from his own essence.
Nestled within the shadows of the scaffolding, Adam closed his eyes, taking a moment to inspect his fading injuries. With each passing second, the pain diminished, the raw sensation of torn flesh and bruised muscle giving way to a soothing calm. It felt alien, and yet, at the same time, it was as if his very body was rapidly adapting and evolving to this new order of things.
"So that''s what Karma does," Lumis declared, his voice infused with newfound authority and understanding. "It brings you more Mana. Even more transactional than I¡¯d assumed. Quite fast too, I wonder how far it traveled since Mana has not permeated the whole city yet."
Adam''s fingers wrapped around the blade he''d acquired¡ªa tangible testament to his latest endeavor. It was, undoubtedly, a stunning piece. "It''s one of those new-age knives, isn''t it? The ones that made ManaTech famous? They made it for kitchens and factories and it ended up in hands like mine."
Lumis chimed in, enthusiasm evident in his ethereal voice. "Exactly. Embedded with early nanotechnology, it remains perpetually sharp. The nano-infused structure ensures its surface is harder than a diamond and honed to a fine edge capable of cutting one¡I have an idea, an experiment¡"
Lumis gestured toward the blade, urging Adam to focus on it deeply. "Let your consciousness envelop the knife. Breathe. Feel its essence."
Adam did as instructed, feeling a strange communion with the weapon, as if its molecular structure unveiled itself to him. Lumis seemed to absorb the essence of the knife, then said, "Blueprint copied. Lend me some more of your Mana."
Adam was momentarily taken aback. "I can do that? Wait, I thought you were my Mana? I¡¯m still confused."
"Yes, just will it. You possess the necessary willpower, I need your¡authorization to try something," Lumis reassured.
Adam concentrated, though he couldn''t pinpoint the exact moment he transferred the energy, or to what from where. Before his eyes, a conjured exact replica of the knife materialized out of thin air, and Adam instinctively reached out, clutching it with his other hand. The sensation of holding two identical blades was exhilarating. "Whoa," he whispered in awe. "Could you keep replicating these? We could sell them and¡ª"
Lumis interrupted gently, "Certainly. But at a cost. Should you wish to continually create these, it''ll drain your Mana substantially. To you, creating one might feel inconsequential, and you¡¯ll regenerate the cost of one over time. But a hundred? It might incapacitate you, or worse, and you couldn¡¯t afford even the upkeep cost. I''d advise against tempting fate in that regard."
Adam smirked, eyebrows raised in playful challenge. "So, what about organic things? Could we make... I don''t know, cake?"
Lumis replied, an undertone of amusement coloring his digital voice, "Well, in theory, we might be able to duplicate a cake, with practice. Challenging. With enough practice¡ But if it''s forged from your own Mana, it''d likely taste right but lack any substantial nutrition or caloric benefit, exceeding the cost to create it."
Laughing, Adam quipped, "Who eats cake for its nutritional value? And caloric benefit? There¡¯s no benefit to cake but the taste!"
Lumis, as if not hearing, lost in intense computations at having a cake and eating it too, continued. "Interesting though. First, I''d need to conduct a thorough scan, especially since it''s organic matter and underwent changes during cooking. The intricacies of its composition might take a bit longer to capture than simpler inanimate objects."
He continued, his tone thoughtful, "Energy conservation is indeed the prime factor. Mana, in essence, is your personalized matter. If you were to consume something crafted from your own Mana, the caloric sustenance you might expect to derive from it could be nullified, simply because you''re essentially consuming your own energy."
Lumis'' voice then took on a speculative tone, "However, if someone else ate the replicated cake, it might be a different story. They wouldn''t be consuming their own energy. Or perhaps, if you allowed your Mana to replenish and re-replicate fully before consuming the cake, the effects could differ. But again, this is all theoretical. I''d be quite interested in experimenting, should you feel inclined."
Feeling rejuvenated, Adam shrugged as he pushed off from the scaffolding. It occurred to him that it had been a week, but he wasn¡¯t really hungry or thirsty. The thought of cake did sound good though.
His healed shoulder moved effortlessly, and with a knife in each hand, he exuded newfound confidence. The recent skirmish had been a mere prelude. Now, he braced for the climax he''d been building toward for years. The jagged outlines of the city skyline drew his eyes to an old, battered apartment complex. It stood as a monument to his stifled youth, a grim reminder of his confined past.
As he gravitated closer, each step resonated with memories from the recesses of his mind. Lumis''s voice cut through his thoughts, probing and reflective. "Adam, what pulls you to that place? Is it personal healing you''re after or a reckoning with the man inside?"
Adam''s grip on his knives tightened, his resolve steely. "I''ve got scores to settle there," he whispered.
Lumis continued, gently yet persistently. "Facing your past head-on, is that the only way you see to find peace? A week has passed. To him, you might be gone or even dead. Does his opinion still hold sway over you?"
Frustration clouded Adam''s voice, each word dripping with the weight of suppressed pain and anger. "It''s always been about survival, Lumis. For years, he''s kept me under his thumb, using manipulation laced with bursts of violence. My own fears, my perceived weaknesses, prevented me from standing up to him sooner. But things are different now. I''m not the same person. I no longer need him. He no longer gets to use me."
Pausing, Lumis posed a question, his tone filled with caution, "If you''re the one to make the first move, Adam, how would you justify it? And how do you think Karma would judge it?"
Adam halted, conflicting emotions swirling within him. Haunting memories of oppression and manipulation surged forth, but the promise of a fresh start also beckoned. Torn between retribution and redemption, he mused aloud, "What if Karma doesn''t work in my favor?"
Lumis''s silence was palpable, allowing Adam''s ponderings to echo in the stillness. The questions weren''t merely academic; they challenged Adam''s very moral core.
As the apartment, a mute witness to years of torment, awaited his approach, Adam grappled with his choices: Confront his past or carve a new path forward? Or just turn back to the city and find some cake?
