《Ephemeral Resonance》 1-1: A Normal Girl - Part 1 Emily loved flowers. She loved her small village, Saalnia. She loved waking up and hearing the sounds of her parents talk about whatever first thing in the morning. She loved her parents and older brother. She enjoyed cooking with her mother. She enjoyed watching her brother,Emilio, practice with his wooden sword, he always talked about wanting to become a knight and serve the king one day. She had fun listening to all the fun stories her father had to share. She had a crush on this boy she always played with called Jack, who was her age. He used to bully her when they were younger, but he grew out of that boyish phase. In a way, from her perspective, her life was perfect. Others might have thought Emily was just a poor girl from a poor small village no one knows about, but even if that was the case, she was still one truly happy 12 years old girl. Her small village,Saalnia, was all she knew. She never traveled outside of it, nor did she really desire too. All she wanted was to remain by the people she loves. She didn''t think that was too much to wish for. She also didn''t really know much about the outside world. She knew her small village was located in theKingdom ofArixad, ruled by King Aricad II, but she never really cared to learn much more, as she truly thought she''d spend all her life in her small village, get married to Jack one day, have kids, and then live the rest of her life in peace with a big family. Learning more about an outside world she had no plans of going out too seemed pointless. For a time, it seemed as if Emily''s vision of a tranquil life might come to fruition, until the unexpected hand of tragedy reached out to destroy the harmony she held dear. All it took was a single arrow.
"Arghh!!" A man screamed out in pain as he fell to the ground. An arrow had hit him in the chest. The basket filled with fruits he held fell with him. All it took was an arrow to start the chaos. Nearby villagers, once going about their daily lives, were now sprinting toward the fallen, dying man, their expressions morphing from tranquility to terror. He, too, was one of their own. This was a very small village, where everyone knew everyone. "W-What happened?!" a man shouted, his eyes widening in disbelief as he surveyed the arrow lodged in the dying man''s chest. "A-An arrow? Wh-" Another villager''s sentence hung in the air, cut short by the abrupt whistle of another projectile. This time, it found its mark in the throat of the speaker, who crumpled to the ground, life extinguished in an instant. Panic erupted among the nearby villagers who were there to witness what went down, an unspoken understanding that danger lurked unseen. Whispers of confusion and fear flitted through the air. Everyone present froze in their place, unable to comprehend what just happened. "Kyahhhhhh!" A girl finally screamed, breaking out people from their frozen spell. "W-What in god''s name is happening?!" "Hang in there! Are you okay?!" "Mom, I''m scared!" The confusion lingered only momentarily before the villagers heard the ominous sound of approaching footsteps¡ªmen, unknown and armed, charging toward the village. The intruders emerged from the shadows, their intent and identity veiled in uncertainty. Chaos erupted like a sudden storm. Villagers, once united by the simplicity of their lives, now scattered in disarray. The attackers moved with ruthless precision, their intent written in the glint of their weapons. A terrified mother, clutching her child, stumbled backward only to be confronted by one of the assailants. His eyes showed no emotion as he raised his weapon. The air hissed with the ominous whoosh of a blade, leaving behind a vivid trail of red as the weapon found its mark. Her son cried, but he soon met the same fate as his mother. In another corner of the village, a brave man tried to fight off his attacker with his bare hands, however, the harsh reality dawned on him as he swiftly recognized the futility of his efforts, sensing the cold steel of a spear piercing through his heart from behind. The last thing he heard was his killers laughing at his poor excuse of a defense. Soon the once peaceful village was filled with terrified screams, and it didn''t take long for them to find their way into Emily''s ears. "Hm? W-What''s that?" The blonde haired girl asked as she looked down into the village from the hillside where she had been picking flowers, her heart now gripped by an uneasy foreboding. Jack was with her. Those sounds like screams, I''m sure of it "I''m not sure, but I have a bad feeling about this. Emily, you stay here, I''ll go and check what''s going on." Jack said, attempting to sound brave, yet the unease in his voice betrayed the anxiety he felt. Emily saw through his act. She''s been with the boy long enough after all. "I-I''m going with you!" she insisted, taking a resolute step towards the boy. "But it might be dangerous, you¡ª" Jack began to object, but before he could finish, Emily interjected. "I''d be scared if you left me on my own here." The boy was very hesitant. Time was of the essence, he could tell something serious was happening in the village, and that there was no time to waste on trying to convince Emily to stay behind. Reluctantly, Jack agreed. "Okay, just stick close to me!" he said, seizing Emily''s hand as they descended the hill toward the village. Emily was scared, but the warmth of Jack''s hand brought a subtle blush to her cheeks. She couldn''t remember the last time Jack held her hand like this. The closer Jack and Emily approached the village, the crescendo of screams and chaos intensified, painting a grim picture of unfolding horror. "W-What''s happening?!" Emily cried out, her voice joining the cacophony of distress. "I''m not su- Emily, hide!" Jack''s urgent command cut through the tumult as he abruptly halted, followed by pushing Emily behind a nearby overturned cart. "Jack? W-?" Emily began, but Jack swiftly placed a hand over her mouth while gesturing with his other hand toward the source of the unfolding nightmare. Emily followed his gaze, her eyes widening in horror at the indescribable scene that unfolded before her. This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author''s work. In the heart of the village square, shadows danced with malevolence. Villagers, once the lifeblood of the community, now lay motionless on the ground, their life force extinguished. Emily recognized all of them. There were the aunt which always gave Emily a hard time, who always said how Emily spends too much time playing around instead of helping around the village or in the kitchen, but she would secretly come rushing if she heard Emily was struck with illness. Emily knew the aunt loved her deep down. Near her laid the young boy of only six years of age who Emily always thought of as a brat. He was very loud, and would sometimes even pull Emily''s hair. Even though Emily always said she found him annoying, deep down she though of him as her baby brother. A short distance away from them was the old man who always brought Emily and Jack candy from outside the village. He was a merchant who traveled a lot, and even though he could have easily moved out ofSaalnia to someplace bigger and better, he never did as he consideredSaalnia his home and everyone who lived here his family. Everyone that was dead was someone Emily had memories of. The assailants moved with ruthless efficiency, showing no mercy as they carried out their grim task, going around the village and killing anyone in sight. Emily found it hard to comprehend what she was witnessing. Emily''s eyes welled with tears as she witnessed the brutality unfolding before her. Jack''s grip tightened on her shoulder, both to comfort and to ensure her silence. The pair stood frozen in terror, compelled to bear witness to the unthinkable as their peaceful village descended into a nightmare. A cold voice made them snap out of it. "Listen, you fools!! Make sure to spare some of the girls and women! Only feel free to kill all the men and boys!" One of the attackers shouted in a very loud voice. Emily had no idea who he was, she could only look at him in horror. His eyes were those of a mad man, and he wielded a large sword. The wooden swords her brother,Emilio, practiced with seemed like a joke in comparison. The thought of her brother made Emily remember her family. Mom! Dad! I have to go to them! "What to do, what to do... we can''t just stay here," Jack murmured, his voice and body trembling with fear over the unfolding chaos. Jack knew he and Emily can''t hide behind thisoverturned cart forever, but the risk of being noticed if they tried to slip away was on his mind. He knew there was a chance he could outrun these men if it came down to it, but he didn''t want to take his chances. He glanced at Emily, her form trembling beside him. Jack understood there was no way Emily could outpace these men either. As he pondered their predicament, Emily turned her gaze toward him. "J-Jack, I want to go to my parents..." Emily''s voice wavered, barely audible. Though Emily''s house wasn''t far from their current position, proximity didn''t equate to safety. "Emily, if those men spot you, they might harm you, or worse, they might..." Jack halted, realizing his words weren''t penetrating the frightened girl. Her sole focus was on her parents; even the surrounding screams faded into the background for a minute. If Emily clung to any semblance of hope, it was that Emilio was out from the village on an errand. In this dreadful moment, she only had to worry about the safety of her parents. "Okay, let''s go. Stick close to me though." Jack agreed as he took a quick glance around, trying to keep in mind where some of the village''s attackers are. Jack and Emily, moving with cautious steps, slipped away from their meager hiding spot behind the overturned cart. The chaos still unfolded around them, but they navigated through while trying avoid the attention of the marauders. They stopped when they needed to stop, hid when they needed to hide, and moved when they had the chance. As they approached Emily''s house, a sense of dread hung in the air. The once familiar path now seemed treacherous, each footfall echoing the uncertainty that awaited them. The air was thick with tension, and Emily''s heartbeat drummed in her ears. The sight of two dead villagers in the path did not make Emily feel better as well. Upon reaching the modest wooden cottage, Jack gently pushed the creaking door ajar. The flickering candlelight revealed the living room, adorned with memories of a once-peaceful family life. Emily''s parents, however, were nowhere to be seen. "Mom? Dad?" Emily''s voice quivered as she called out, the silence that followed more ominous than any scream. Jack, his eyes scanning the room, noticed the subtle signs of a struggle¡ªa toppled chair, shattered trinkets. The air became heavy with the undeniable truth. They proceeded further into the house, each step echoing the dread in their hearts. The door to Emily''s parents'' bedroom lay slightly ajar, revealing the unspeakable scene within. "No..." Emily''s whispered denial barely escaped her lips as she took in the lifeless figures of her parents, their eyes forever closed to the horrors that had befallen their village. Emily couldn''t take a good look to see how they died, but she could tell from the quick glance she had it was likely due to them being slashed by a sword of some kind. Why? Why? Why is this happening? Why? Jack, his own heart heavy with sorrow, instinctively pulled Emily into a gentle embrace, offering silent solace amid the overwhelming grief. In another, happier day, being embraced by Jack like this would have had Emily blush red, but not today. She barely even noticed he was embracing her. The shadows cast by the flickering candle seemed to dance in mournful sympathy as they bore witness to the shattered remnants of Emily''s once-happy home.
After few minutes, though they felt like hours to Emily, Jack spoke up. "Emily, we can''t stay here. We have to go," Jack''s voice, though filled with sorrow, held a sense of urgency. The chaos outside was a reminder that danger still lurked. The men who did this to Emily''s parents were still out there. Emily hesitated, her eyes fixed on the lifeless figures of her parents. Jack gently took her hand, offering a comforting squeeze. "I know it''s hard, but we have to run. It''s not safe here." With a final, mournful glance at her childhood home, Emily nodded. Together, they slipped out of the cottage. The attackers, however, were vigilant, and as the door closed behind them, the chilling realization struck¡ªthey had been spotted. "Run, Emily! Run!" Jack''s urgent whisper spurred them into motion. Jack grabbed the girl''s hand and started to run as fast he could, Emily tried her best to keep up with him. The pursuit was relentless; their desperate footsteps took them towards the hill overlooking the village''s water source. Breathless and terrified, they reached the lake, which was where people inSaalnia got most their water from. It wasn''t a big lake by any means, but to the people ofSaalnia, it was like their treasure. Emily and Jack played a lot near this lake, though Emily never once imagined they''d come to it like this. The men were getting closer now, at least 5 of them chased Jack and Emily. They all were grown men, with weapons in hands. They didn''t wear any armor, just simple leather clothes. "There they are!! Get them! Capture the girl and kill the boy!" One of the men shouted. Jack noticed the men were getting closer, and that it''s only a matter of time before they catch them. "E-Emily, run! I''ll draw their attention!" Jack''s urgent command sliced through the air. Without waiting for Emily''s response, he released her hand, propelling her forward. Swift and determined, he seized a makeshift wooden stick nearby, swiftly turning to face the oncoming threat. "What?! Jack, no!" Emily shouted, stopping to look at the boy who was now running away from her and closer to the men. "Stay away!" Jack shouted at the men as hebrandished the wooden stick in a futile attempt to both sound and look threatening, but the image of a you boy with a stick trying to scare them off only made the men laugh as they stopped near Jack and looked at him with mockery in their eyes. "Aww, aren''t you a brave little thing?" One of the men sneered. "Trying to protect your pretty girlfriend? Don''t worry, we''ll treat her right."Another man mocked, his words dripping with sarcasm. "I''m sure we can sell her for a good price too." A different man added, callously voicing their sinister intentions. "E-Emily, run!" Jack''s desperate cry filled the air, his back turned to Emily as he confronted the approaching men. "Ja-" Emily began, her voice catching in her throat as the horrifying reality unfolded before her. Jack crumpled to the ground, a spear thrust into his heart by one of the five men. He couldn''t muster a final glance in Emily''s direction. He fell, silent and lifeless, leaving Emily to bear witness to the abrupt and devastating end of the boy she loved so dearly. The world plunged into darkness within Emily''s mind, even though it was still morning and the two suns up at the sky could still be seen. She couldn''t speak or move. She didn''t even want to think anymore. "Someone go and grab her!" One of the men shouted as he pulled out the spear out of Jack''s lifeless body. Two men started approaching Emily. To her left was the lake, to her right the village, and ahead were the men. The only choice was to run backwards, but even so she didn''t move. Something within her was happening. At first it was a silent scream Then it was anger. Then it was hatred. Then it raged like a storm. The next thing Emily knew, she was screaming so loud, she didn''t think it was possible for someone to scream like this, but that wasn''t all. The lake, the water in the lake, it was moving, she was moving it, she was controlling it, and she knew just what to do with it. 1-1: A Normal Girl - Part 2 Emily stood at the water''s edge, her eyes vacant and unseeing, lost in the turbulent storm of emotions that swirled within her. The massacre of her village, the death of her parents, and the brutal end of Jack, the boy she loved¡ªall of it echoed in the recesses of her mind, shrouding her in a haze of grief and rage. It was all too much. She couldn''t comprehend what was happening nor did she want too. The five men, oblivious to the tempest brewing within the seemingly fragile girl, approached cautiously. Their earlier mockery had transformed into anticipation as they closed in on their defenseless prey. They were unnerved by Emily''s earlier scream, but now that she stopped, they let their guard down. Little did they know that the very element surrounding them would soon turn against them. With a subtle, almost involuntary gesture of her hand, Emily stirred the water of the lake. It rippled and churned under her command, responding to the unspoken turmoil in her heart. The men exchanged glances, sensing something amiss but dismissing it as a trick of their imagination. As the first assailant stepped within Emily''s range, some of the water from the lake near him surged towards him with unnatural force, wrapping around his limbs like serpentine tendrils. He gasped, his eyes widening in terror, as he was lifted off the ground, suspended in mid-air. The others looked on in disbelief, their faces mirroring a mix of horror and confusion. "What in the hell?!" One man''s terrified scream pierced the air as he witnessed the unfathomable. "What kind of sorcery is this?!" Another man stammered, his voice trembling with a mixture of dread and disbelief. Emily''s gaze remained distant, her connection with the water unbroken. The liquid restraints tightened, crushing the life out of the first man who dared to threaten her. His futile struggles ceased as the water enveloped him, leaving only the echo of his desperate cries. "H-He''s dead!" The man who killed Jack shouted. The remaining attackers, realizing the imminent danger, drew their weapons and lunged at Emily. However, the water seemed to dance in response to her will, becoming an impenetrable barrier that shielded her from their malicious intent. They swung their swords and thrust their spears, but the liquid shield repelled their every advance. "WHAT IS SHE?!" "A WITCH! SHE''S A WITCH! KILL HER!" In her daze, Emily''s expression shifted from vacant to vengeful. A silent scream echoed through her mind as the water, now imbued with an otherworldly force, began its retaliation. The second attacker was ensnared by tendrils that coiled around him like vengeful spirits, dragging him beneath the surface. In her daze, Emily''s expression stayed vacant, but on the inside a silent scream echoed through her mind as the water, now imbued with an otherworldly force, began its retaliation. The second attacker was ensnared by tendrils that coiled around him like vengeful spirits, dragging him beneath the surface. Another, the one who killed Jack, had no time to react when in a swift and fluid motion, water from the lake coalesced into a crystalline lance, gleaming with an otherworldly glow. The watery lance surged forward with preternatural speed, piercing through the air with an ethereal grace. The lance found its mark unerringly, striking the assailant through the heart. His eyes widened as he fell, fear painted on his face. The two remaining men tried to escape in fear, but Emily didn''t let them go, she The two remaining men tried to escape in fear, but Emily didn''t let them go. With an almost casual wave of her hand, the water responded, rising in towering walls that blocked the assailants'' escape routes. The liquid barricade, infused with the same arcane energy, seemed to pulsate with an unspoken wrath. "Ahhhhhh!!" One of the men screamed, seeing escape won''t be an easy thing. As the men stumbled back, panic etched across their faces, the tendrils of water lashed out again. Like sentient serpents, they snaked around the assailants, tightening their grip with an otherworldly strength. The tendrils dragged the men closer, ensnaring them in aquatic restraints that allowed no room for resistance. The next thing the two men know, they were dragged into the lake, where they breathed their last. And it was just like that how one by one, the assailants fell victim to the aquatic power Emily wielded, until none of the five men was still alive no more. The lake, once a source of tranquility for Saalnia, became both a witness and a weapon to a battleground. Emily, throughout all of this, still was feeling hazy. She was aware that she was doing something she shouldn''t be able to do, and yet at the same time she felt as if she didn''t really have full control of her body. It was as if her body is moving on its own, while her mind is somewhere else, paying very little attention or thought to what acts her body is doing Jack.....Jack....Jack She couldn''t stop thinking about the boy who lay dead close to where she stood. Just this morning, I dragged him up this hill with me. I wanted to make him a flower crown. Emily started walking towards Jack''s body. Jack, if I stayed behind when you told me too, this wouldn''t have happened to you, right? Right, Jack? Guilt was starting to eat at Emily''s heart. She was now standing right next to Jack''s body. His form lay sprawled on the ground, eyes wide open, a silent witness to the brutality he endured. Emily wondered if he felt any pain and hoped he didn''t. She knelt beside Jack, her fingers trembling as they reached to gently close his unyielding eyes. His once lively gaze was now frozen, devoid of the spark that had animated it. The weight of loss settled heavily on Emily''s shoulders as tears started tracing down her cheeks. "I''m sorry, Jack...I''m so sorry!" She sobbed as she talked to a boy who could no longer hear or response to her. Emily felt as if she was about to pass out, her body was tired. All she wanted to do was lay next to Jack, but then the screams coming from Saalnia lit whatever had posseted her a minute earlier yet again. It made her remember that her village was still under attack. In that moment of grief and despair, Emily drew upon what remained of her power. With a deep breath, she extended her hands toward the lake. The water responded to her unspoken command, swirling and rising in response to the turmoil within her. Am I....doing this? A shimmering bubble, translucent and colossal, formed on top of Saalnia, encapsulating the entire village. It sparkled with an otherworldly radiance. Both the villagers and invaders lookked up at horror, not understanding what''s going on. Emily''s dazed eyes, still clouded by grief, focused on the village below. In her anguish, she summoned arrows made of water, each one a manifestation of her sorrow and rage. They hovered within the giant bubble, waiting for her silent command. I...What am I? With a flick of her wrist, the water arrows descended from the sky, a torrential rain of liquid retribution seeking out the attackers. Unerring and relentless, they sought out the perpetrators with deadly precision. Each arrow found its mark, piercing through the assailants with enough force to kill them in one hit. The invaders were caught off guard, and they all fell one by one as the water arrows struck with a lethal grace. Saalnia was now bathed in water, blood, and dead bodies everywhere. The remaining survivors couldn''t understand what just happened. This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it. Emily, feeling exhausted like never before, closed her eyes and fell next to Jack. She wanted to take one more look at this face, but she was so tired, her body didn''t allow her. She passed out in what felt like two seconds.
A soft, warm light began to seep through Emily''s closed eyelids, coaxing her back to consciousness against her will. The world around her was initially blurry, indistinct shapes and muted sounds blending into a dreamlike haze. Slowly, the fog lifted, revealing a room bathed in the gentle glow of morning sunlight. Where...? As Emily stirred on the bed, the events of the previous day rushed back, like a floodgate of memories opening in her mind. The massacre, the power she had unleashed, and the devastating losses¡ªJack''s lifeless eyes, the village consumed by chaos¡ªall echoed in her mind. Emily sat up abruptly, her eyes wide as she surveyed her surroundings. She found herself in a small room inside a house in Saalnia. Confusion and disorientation clouded Emily''s thoughts. What happened? Who carried her here? What happened to the villagers and the attackers? And... And just how did I...do that? A million question came to Emily''s mind all at once, but what followed that confusion was pain. Mom...Dad.....Jack Emily felt as if her heart was about to break in two. Part of her wanted to hope all of that was a dream, but she knew better. Suddenly, the creak of a door drew Emily''s attention. A figure clad in chest armor, adorned with the entered the room. He had a sword attached to his hip. Emily didn''t recognize this man, which scared her. "Wh-Who are you?!" She let out, her voice sounding exhausted. "Oh, you''re up! I thought I heard something." The man said in a casual voice. Who is he? Is he one of the invaders? Did that last attack I somehow did not finish them all off? Oh no... The man perceived Emily''s worry etched on her pallid face. "Don''t be afraid. I''m not one of the men who attacked your village. I''m a knight in service to His Majesty, the king," he assured, attempting to alleviate Emily''s apprehension. "A knight?" Emily uttered. She had never encountered a knight before; they never venture to her village. "I''m not someone important. Wait here; I''ll go summon someone who needs to speak with you, okay?" The man reassured her as he exited the room, closing the door behind him. "H-Hey! Oh, he''s gone..." Emily wasn''t sure what to make of this, but knowing that man isn''t out to hurt Saalnia and its people was enough to maker her feel tiny bit revealed, for now anyway. Moments later, the door opened again, revealing another man who looked to be in his late 30s. This one, dressed in more elaborate attire, carried an air of command and authority. His hair, a deep ebony, falls in disciplined waves just above his shoulders, framing a face marked by the lines of experience and a firm, square jaw. A longsword rests at his side. He stood tall and imposing, that it made Emily feel scared again. "So you woke up, little girl." The man said as he walked towards Emily. If she could, Emily felt she would had stood up and ran away from this scary man, but her body was so exhausted, she wasn''t sure she can stand, let alone run. "Your name is Emily, isn''t it?" The man asked, though it seemed as if he already knew the answer. "Y-Yes." "The villagers told me, in case you were wondering how I knew of your name." The villagers! I should ask him about them! "The villagers, are they...okay?" Emily asked, her voice sounding scared to know the answer to her own question. "I suppose there is a lot we must talk about, and I''ll give you the answer to your question, but first let me introduce myself. My name is Durthon, I''m a general in the Kingdom of Arixad''s army." Durthon stated. "A g-general?!" Emily exclaimed, taken aback by the importance of the person addressing her. "Yes, indeed. Now, regarding your question... it''s grim news. Most of the villagers did not make it. My men reported that at least 55 people lost their lives, 15 sustained critical injuries, and only 24 managed to survive, including you." Durthon responded somberly. "No..." Emily spoke in a very low voice. She truly felt as if her heart was about to snap in two, but she tried to stay strong for a little longer as she had another question to ask. "A-And did a boy by the name of Emilio show up? He''s my older brother, but he was out of the village when the attack started." Emily tried to explain herself. "Emilio? No, I don''t believe so. No one called that was part of the dead or the ones who survived." Durthon answered. Emily wasn''t sure how to feel. On one had she was happy her brother wasn''t here to either witness or know what went down, but on the other hand she wanted him by her side more than ever right now. For a minute there were silence in the room, but Durthon was the one to break it. "Those men, the ones who attacked your village, they were a bunch of bandits. Your village wasn''t the first village they attacked. We got word of them and my men and I were on their tail, but it seems we were a day too late to stop this tragedy. My men and I owe you all an apology." Emily didn''t respond, she really wasn''t sure what to say. Her head was a mess. She simply nodded as Durthon spoke. "Now, Emily, this attack on your home happened yesterday. You''ve been out of it for an entire day, and not only that, all these bandits were found dead when my men and I got here. Explain yourself." Durthon said, sounding more serious than ever since walked into the room, which sent chills down Emily''s neck. "W-What do you mean?" she asked, her voice trembling. "Don''t play stupid. Some of the surviving villagers saw you. They witnessed what you did. You used magic! You''re a witch!" Durthon suddenly shouted, causing Emily to start shaking. Fear tightened its grip on Emily''s heart. She tried to find her voice, to explain, but Durthon''s stern demeanor silenced her. "Since when were you able to wield these powers? Is water the only kind of thing you can control, or is there more? Answer!" Durthon demanded. "I-I-I didn''t know! I didn''t know I had these powers until yesterday! I don''t even know how to control them!" Emily stammered, fear painted across her face. "Is that really true? Because for your first time, you managed not only to use it well enough to defend yourself but also to kill all of those bandits." Durthon spoke skeptically, not seeming to trust Emily''s words. "I''m not lying, I promise!" "Well, regardless of whether you are or not, using magic, being a witch, is a major sin, as I''m sure you know. Not only that, but it''s also against the law of our Kingdom. It doesn''t matter if you used it to defend this village or not; you are still a witch. We can''t simply let someone like you go," Durthon spoke with a cold voice, his gaze fixed on Emily as if she were some sort of monster. Emily felt as if she were on the verge of tears. The concept that she, herself, was a witch seemed impossible to reconcile. She had always been taught that the use of magic is a grave sin, and the punishment for witches daring to wield such powers is death. Magic and witches were things she believed belonged to distant realms, far removed from her normal life in Saalnia. Yet, here she was, labeled a witch. A witch? I''m a witch? Emily struggled to accept the truth, but deep down, she knew it explained the power she unleashed yesterday. "You are to go west with my men and I to the capital, Arixalum, where you''ll be put to trial. Don''t even think of trying to escape, as I''ll be allowed to kill you on the spot if you did." Emily couldn''t believe what she was hearing, it was all happening too fast. "We are going to take off in a couple of hours, try to get some rest. One of my men will bring you food soon." Durthon said as he stood up and walked out of the room, not bothering to take another glance at Emily. Emily closed her eyes, unable to keep up with what''s happening anymore.
Few hours have passed, and now it was time for Emily, Durthon, and some of him men to start heading west towards the capital, Arixalum. Some of his men are going to stay and help the surviving villagers until a plan on what to do with them is figured out. Emily took her first steps out of the wooden cottage she was staying in since the attack. It was her first time seeing what became of her village, her home. The once small, yet vibrant village of Saalnia now lay in ruins. Buildings that once stood proudly were reduced to charred remnants. The air carried the acrid scent of smoke and burned wood, a stark contrast to the once-familiar aroma of the village. Streets that once bustled with life were now eerily quiet, save for the occasional creaking of damaged structures in the aftermath of the attack, not to mention the blood. Durthon''s men might have removed most of the dead bodies, but the blood they left behind was still there, tainting the already broken village. "Let''s go." Durthon said as he started leading Emily out of the village, towards the horses he and men are going to get on. As Emily was walking next to the scary man, she noticed that to her left were some of the surviving villagers were looking at her, watching her leave. She recognized who they were, but she didn''t recognize the way they looked at her. It was a look of disgust, fear, and confusion. It''s because I''m a witch that they look at me with such eyes, isn''t it? If Emily''s heart wasn''t already broken, it would have broke then. She wondered why had none of the villagers came to check up on her, and now she knows why. She might be their savior, but she''s still a witch. Durthon gently lifted Emily onto the horse''s back, ensuring she was settled comfortably. The steed, a majestic creature with a powerful build, stood patiently as if aware of the gravity of the situation. Once Emily was securely in place, Durthon mounted the horse behind her, his movements controlled and measured. The rest of Durthon''s men who are coming along also started mounting their horses. Emily has never been on a horse before. Something like this might have brought her lots of joy at some point, but not now, not after what happened. The rhythmic clip-clop of the horse''s hooves echoed in the solemn air as they began their journey westward. The wind, which once might have carried the thrill of adventure, now whispered the somber tale of Saalnia''s tragedy. Emily took one final glance at Saalina, the only home she has ever known. I wanted to see Jack''s face one last time... Deep down though, there were a small twisted part of her that was glad Jack died after all, as he''ll never have to know she''s a witch. He''ll never hate her. 1-1: A Normal Girl - Part 3 Liam''s POV Meanwhile, while what was happening with Emily and her village, Saalnia, was taking place. In Arixalum, the capital of the Kingdom of Arixad, there stood a certain church. It wasn''t the only church in town, nor was it the biggest nor the smallest. As far as churches in the capital go, it didn''t really stand out. It was just another church of Arlin, one of gods who represents one of the two suns. Its entrance, adorned with intricately carved wooden doors, beckoned the faithful and curious alike. Simple stained glass windows adorned the sides, casting a kaleidoscope of muted colors within the serene interior. White lilies, the symbol of the religion, were planted all around it, just like with most Arlin churches. The interior, with wooden pews worn smooth by the passage of countless prayers, echoed with hushed reverence. Arlin, the god symbolizing one of the two suns, was subtly honored through a mural that adorned the altar. Bathed in the soft glow of candlelight, the mural depicted the youthful visage of Arlin, exuding a sense of benevolent warmth. When one envisions a deity, the imagine of an elderly man might come to their mind, but that wasn''t Arlin. Arlin has always been depicted as a young boy no older than 10 years of age. The atmosphere within the church held an air of quiet devotion, offering solace to those who sought respite in its unassuming embrace. Liam was one of those. Liam knelt in quiet reverence, his hands clasped together, eyes closed in earnest prayer within the hallowed halls of the Church of Arlin. His youthful face, though not devoid of the struggles of adolescence, now bore a sincerity that transcended his tender age. The flickering candlelight cast dancing shadows on the ornate walls, creating an atmosphere of sacred stillness. Liam possessed short, tousled hair that framed his youthful face. His hair, a rich chestnut brown, accentuated the warmth in his hazel eyes. Arlin above, if you can hear me... Liam wasn''t the only person at the church praying, but he has been here for a while, which caught the attention of a Sister. She observed the fervor in his supplication and, moved by curiosity, decided to check on the young worshipper. She approached him with a with a soft step. This wasn''t the first time she saw Liam praying like this, seeing him around in this church was a common occurrence if anything, so she really shouldn''t be surprised, but she couldn''t help it. There just wasn''t many 15 years old who were as devoted as him, which made him stand out in her eyes. "Liam," she whispered, her voice a gentle breeze in the sanctuary, " Sorry to bother you, but is everything alright?" Startled, Liam looked up, his eyes reflecting a mixture of surprise and vulnerability. "Sister Elara," he stammered, "I... I''m just praying, seeking guidance from Arlin." This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source. Liam was familiar with Sister Elara; he had seen her every time he visited this church. She was a young, devout member, still in her early 20s. Elara smiled warmly, her eyes filled with understanding. "Prayer is a powerful connection, Liam. But what weighs so heavily on your heart ?" Liam stayed silent, hesitant to share his thoughts. "Oh, I''m sorry. I shouldn''t pry into your personal life," Sister Elara apologized, noticing the younger boy''s guarded reaction. "Oh no no, you did nothing wrong, Sister Elara. I do appreciate you caring enough to check up on me." Liam said, offering a genuine smile. "Well, just remember if you ever wanted to talk about it, I''m here. I''ll always be willing to listen to you." Sister Elara said as she placed a comforting hand on Liam''s shoulder before walking away. Even if I wanted to tell her, it''s not like I''m allowed too. "Hey, Liam." someone suddenly said, causing him to turn. He recognized the voice immediately. "Oh, Jaxon! You''ve come too. Are you here to pray as well?" Liam greeted his younger friend, who didn''t appear nearly as pleased. Jaxon, a 12 years old with blond hair, stood there with an expression that mirrored his annoyance. Despite the scowl on his face, there was a certain innocence in the way he carried himself. "No, I''ve come here to get you." Jaxon explained, sounding annoyed. "You really should stop going out on your own, do you want to get in trouble?" "But it''s such a bother to bring one of the knights with me here every time I want to pray, and it''s not like I''m planning on running away or anything." Liam explained. "Yes, yes. I''m sure the knights who watch over us also know you''re only going to pray and aren''t planning on running away, but that''s still against the rules. You''re putting both them and us in trouble when you do this!" Jaxon spoke in a louder voice than intended, so he quickly glanced around and relaxed when he saw that no one had heard him, and there weren''t that many people in the church right now. Oh Jaxon, you really never change. Serious as ever. "And...who was that Sister talking to you a minute earlier? Did she want something?" Jaxon inquired, a tinge of curiosity coloring his voice. "Oh, that? That was Sister Elara. She was just checking up on me. She''s very kind," Liam replied, as Jaxon''s gaze lingered on the sister engrossed in a conversation with a mother airing her grievances about her son. "I see." Jaxon said, his eyes still fixed on Sister Elara. "Don''t tell me you find her cute; I thought you had a thing for Nicole," Liam teased, a mischievous glint in his eyes. He knew it would elicit a reaction from Jaxon, and it did. "W-What?! It''s not like that, idiot!" Jaxon exclaimed, the sudden outburst drawing the attention of nearby churchgoers this time. A blush crept onto his cheeks, and he shifted his gaze to the floor in embarrassment. "A-Anyway, are you done? We should head back home. Only Karl and Nicole are home right now." Jaxon redirected the conversation, still recovering from the embarrassment. "Oh? Is our teacher out?" Liam queried, curiosity piqued. "Yes. Something came up, and he had to leave. I''m not sure what it''s about," Jaxon explained. I wonder what that''s about, though that teacher of ours was never the one to explain more than he needs too. "Sure, let''s go, though...don''t you want to offer a prayer to Arlin before we leave, Jaxon?" Liam suggested. "Not really. Why would I? Why would you?" Jaxon responded, the hurt underlying his words more evident than annoyance. Liam understood the unspoken pain. "Alright then, let''s go. I assume our knight friend is waiting for us outside the church?" Liam attempted to shift the conversation. "He is, yes." Jaxon affirmed, turning toward the exit, with Liam trailing closely. Why do I pray, you ask? "Old habits die hard." Liam suddenly remarked, prompting Jaxon to turn and look at him, confusion etched on his face. "Hm?" "Oh, it''s nothing. Let''s go, Jaxon." I suppose it is silly for someone like me to pray to Arlin. I am a sinner beyond redemption, I am a witch after all 1-1: A Normal Girl - Part 4 Emily''s POV Emily felt as if her mind was being being split into five different parts, all at once. A part was thinking about the villagers in Saalnia, who she thought of as family. A part was thinking about her parents. A part was thinking about her older brother, Emilio. A part was thinking about Jack. And finally, a part was thinking her being a witch. Not to mention all the grief she felt. Her journey with Durthon and his men should had been existing, as Emily never left her small village before, but it didn''t phase her at all. She''s barely paying any attention to it. She didn''t even show any reaction to having to sleep in the open in the cold while on this journey, even though that was her first time doing something like that. Was it because she knew she was being taken to the capital, Arixalum, to likely be executed on the crime of being a witch? Not really. Emily felt as if she didn''t have a reason to live on anymore, so she wasn''t really afraid of the thought of dying. My parents died, Jack died, the villagers hate me...what''s even the point of wanting to live? Though if there was one thing that made Emily a bit hesitant of dying, it was Emilio. If she died, he''d be all on his own, though again, will he really want anything to do with her if he learned she was a witch? Emily was afraid to find out the answer to this. I wish I told the villagers to tell Emilio I died if he came asking for me. I don''t want him to know the truth. I''d rather he thinks I died along with our parents. "Here you go. You should eat." Durthon said as he handed Emily a wooden plate of soup, snapping her out of her dark thoughts. She took the plate slowly from his large hands. "...Thank you." She said in a voice so low, she wasn''t sure if Durthon heard her. Emily, Durthon, and a handful of his men gathered in a circle around a crackling fire. The remnants of a day''s journey lay scattered around them as they settled into a makeshift camp, the flickering flames casting dancing shadows on their faces. The air held a subtle chill, and the scent of pine lingered from the surrounding trees. The crackle of the fire intertwined with the distant rustle of leaves, creating a soothing symphony of nature as the group prepared to call it a night. After a minute of silence, Durthon''s gaze ascended to the vast expanse of the night sky. "We should reach Arixalum tomorrow morning. It''s your first time in the capital, correct?" Durthon inquired. "Yes." Emily replied, her voice lacking vigor. This makes it the third day since Emily set off towards Arixalum with Durthon, and during these 3 days, he and his men never treated her cruelly. And while they weren''t cruel, they weren''t exactly friendly either. This makes it the third day since Emily embarked on the journey toward Arixalum with Durthon. Throughout this span, neither he nor his men subjected her to cruelty. Yet, their demeanor didn''t extend to warmth either. A guarded vigilance surrounded Emily, even in the quiet moments of her repose. Emily could feel they did not trust her. They always kept watch over Emily, even as she slept. They made sure she was never truly alone. Emily felt as if they were both guarding her and guarding the world from her at the same time. Conversations were borne out of necessity only, and some men even avoided eye contact all together, as if some feared the potential witchcraft she might wield upon them if their eyes met with her. Emily could not help but find it a little funny how some of these knights feared her, thinking she''s this powerful witch who can easily cast a spell and kill them, as she knew the truth was the exact opposite. It''s them who can kill her anytime. "Where will you take me tomorrow?" Emily suddenly asked. This was the first question she ever asked Durthon since their journey started. The man turned to look at her, not looking too pleased. "Nowhere pleasant, I can promise you that." He responded. - The next day dawned with the two suns in tandem ascent, casting a radiant glow upon the horizon as Arixalum, the grand capital, slowly unveiled itself. Emily stood at the edge of the city gates, her gaze wide. Arixalum, the capital of the Kingdom of Arixad, was a sight Emily has never seen before. The city''s architecture blended tradition with practicality, comprised of sturdy stone structures and winding streets. Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon. The buildings, though not towering, stood as testaments to craftsmanship, adorned with simple carvings and symbols. Emily has never seen houses that tall before. The streets were paved with cobblestones, worn smooth by the passage of countless feet and carriages. Market stalls lined the thoroughfares, showcasing goods ranging from crafted tools to basic potions. People mingled in the streets, each with their own trade and purpose. Merchants peddled their wares in wooden stalls, and artisans crafted their goods in small workshops. Emily has never seen so many people at one place before. The culture shock of Arixalum almost made the girl forget all that happened to her for a minute. As Emily delved further into the heart of the city, still riding Durthon''s horse with him, she encountered the hum of everyday life. The scents of bakeries and simple street food wafted through the air. Residents, dressed in practical and well-worn clothing, went about their daily routines. In the central square, Emily found a bustling marketplace where farmers from the outskirts sold fresh produce. The rhythmic sounds of hammering and the chatter of vendors created a lively atmosphere. The city had an unmistakable vibrancy Despite the simplicity of her attire, Emily stood out among the city dwellers. Her plain gown drew curious glances, a stark contrast. Knights guiding her around her around also did little to make the girl be noticed less. "Where are you taking me?" Emily asked Durthon the same question she asked yesterday. She hoped this time he''ll actually tell her. "The Knights Garrison. One of them, that is. The one near the royal castle is off the table." Durthon responded, his gaze steadfast ahead. He navigated the bustling street with a purpose, leading his horse with measured steps to avoid any chance encounter with passersby. "And... what awaits me there? Are you going to kill me?" Emily voiced the question that had silently echoed in the recesses of her mind since their journey began. Durthon stayed silent for a minute. "Likely so. Yet, it won''t be my hands tasked with snuffing out your life, witch." Durthon retorted, the words laced with an icy detachment. Likely so? Emily wondered for a second why Durthon worded it like that, but she decided she must be reading too much into it.
"Here is where you''ll be staying for now." A knight declared, his tone carrying the weight of cold finality as he gently ushered Emily into the confines of the iron cell. With a resounding clang, he closed the formidable gate the moment she stood ensconced behind the unyielding bars. "Oh..." Emily''s subdued exclamation hung in the air as her eyes swept across the cell that would be her room in the Knights Garrison. The room, if it could be called that, was a stark embodiment of restraint. Dim light filtered through a small, grated window, casting feeble beams that barely illuminated the cold stone walls. The air hung heavy with the musty scent of captivity, and the only furniture in the small chamber where thee meager straw pallet strewn against the corner, and a wooden chair that looked as if it''s about to fall over any second now. As Emily tentatively stepped forward, the cold floor beneath her feet offered no solace. I wonder how long I''ll stay here. Durthon did say I''ll be put to trail. Emily slowly sat on the wooden chair. There were nothing for her to do but get lost in her own thoughts, for better or for worst. Naturally, her mind yet again started wondering towards her village, her parents, her brother, Jack, and her being witch. She was exhausted and wanted to stop thinking about it all, but her mind did not listen. And just like that, two rough days in this cell passed. Knights brought Emily food and water everyday, though they always made sure she drank all her water first before handing her over her meals. Emily realized they are being cautious. She assumed they thought she would be able to control the water they give her somehow if they weren''t careful. Emily thought it silly at first, but then.... But could I? Can I really control water? It''s not like I ever tried it before, though again, it''s not like I knew what I was doing back when I first used these....powers of mine. Emily still found it hard to accept she has such powers. On the third day of Emily''s confinement, Durthon, accompanied by a man previously unknown to her, approached the cell where she stayed. As the heavy footsteps neared, Emily cast her gaze toward the approaching duo. Durthon, with his intimidating and rugged visage, remained a familiar and foreboding presence. However, the man by his side stood in stark contrast¡ªa figure of unexpected beauty amid the austere surroundings of the cell. He appeared to be in his mid 20s, and Emily found him to be beautiful. The newcomer''s long, blond hair cascaded down his back, neatly gathered into a ponytail that swayed with each step. His features were refined, bearing an air of elegance that sharply contrasted with Durthon''s hardened demeanor. His eyes, a shade of deep blue, held a certain warmth that seemed out of place in the stern setting of the Knights Garrison. "So is this her?" The beautiful man asked. "Yes, this is her. She''s the witch who killed all the bandits my men and I were after." Durthon responded. The beautiful man arched an eyebrow, his tone laced with playful disbelief. "How shocking, a little girl like that really managed to beat you and your men at doing the job." A flash of anger crossed Durthon''s face. "Shut your mouth! Didn''t you want to talk to her? So go ahead!" Durthon shouted. The tension between the two men was palpable, leaving Emily with the distinct impression that they harbored a mutual disdain. "Sure, but do you mind giving us some privacy? I''d rather talk alone with the girl." His blue eyes met Emily''s, and she couldn''t help but be momentarily captivated by their depth. Who is he? What does he want with me? He''s so beautiful, I thought he was a woman for a second. "Fine, but remember, you only have fifteen minutes!" Durthon grumbled as he walked away, leaving Emily and the beautiful man on their own. "So, girl, what''s your name?" He asked with a soft smile on his face. "E-Emily...." She responded, her voice weak. "What a pretty name for a pretty girl. A girl like you really doesn''t belong in such a place." "N-No, I''m a witch....I should be here." Emily said, which she could tell made the man frown from behind the bars. "Is that so? Though from what I heard, your power was the reason any people from your village survived." The man said, trying to cheer up Emily. She stayed silent. "My name is Thandor. Thandor Whitethorn." he introduced himself, a warm smile gracing his face. "Wh-What do you want with me, Thandor? Are you the one who''s going to kill me?" she asked, her voice trembling. "Oh no no, nothing like that. If anything, it''s the opposite. I''m going to save you and get you out of here. I promise you that." Thandor reassured. Emily felt as if his soft smile was illuminating not just the room, but also her heart somehow. She couldn''t explain why, but his gentle demeanor almost brought tears to her eyes. Just who is this man? 1-1: A Normal Girl - Part 5 Legend has it that the presence of the White Lily flower gracing the cover of the holy books of the Arlinite faith serves as a symbolic manifestation of Arlin''s purity, the revered sun god. Yet, a dissenting perspective contends that the inclusion of this pristine bloom is more a testament to Arlin''s personal fondness for the flower than an allegory of divine purity. While the scriptures of Arlinianism illuminate myriad truths about our world, one enigma they intentionally shroud in ambiguity is the true significance behind the choice of the White Lily. Emily''s POV "S-Save me?" Emily echoed, her voice tinged with confusion. "Yes, that''s right." Thandor affirmed. "But, but, how? Is that even possible? I mean, I''m a witch. How can you.....?" "Oh, it is possible. It will require some effort on my end, but it''s nothing I can''t handle." Thandor stated with confidence. Emily grappled with conflicting emotions. She had resigned herself to the idea of death, but now that Thandor told her he can save her, suddenly a part of her felt both hopeful and relieved. There was a part of her that wanted to live after all. "B-But! How? I''m...I''m a witch! I have these scary powers! I don''t even know where I got them from! Can someone like me be really let free?" Emily raised her voice as she spoke. Her voice shook with her as tears came down from her eyes. This was the first time she cried since the attack on her village. She felt as if she was so emotionally drained, she couldn''t cry, but somehow this strange, kind man brought the tears she held for so long out. "You poor girl. Listen, these powers, magic or whatever you desire to call them, it''s unknown how someone gets them. It could be through inheritance in the blood, or it could be random. Not much is known about people like us, unfortunately." Thandor spoke in a gentle voice, offering what explanation he could. People like us? "People like us? W-Wait are you also....?" Emily asked, tears still lingering in her eyes, as she began to piece together the puzzle. "Yes, dear. Just like you, I''m also a witch. You can say that''s a big reason why Durthon isn''t too fond of me," Thandor confirmed what Emily had suspected. A witch? Thandor is a witch? Emily felt a profound sense of confusion. How was Thandor a witch, and why was he free and not confined to a cell like her? And not only that, Thandor also somehow had the ability to save her? Thandor let out a small laugh, amused by the confusion written on Emily''s face. "I see you didn''t see that one coming, huh?" he remarked with a playful smile. "N-No. I mean, I don''t understand." Emily admitted her bewilderment. "You see, Emily, there is this special group called A-" Thandor began to explain, but was abruptly interrupted by a voice from behind. "Your fifteen minutes are up!" shouted a knight Emily did not recognize. Thandor turned to face him. Alright, I''ll be leaving." he said, turning back to look at Emily. "I''ll be back tomorrow, I promise. Hold on until then, okay?" With one last reassuring smile, Thandor turned and walked away, leaving Emily alone once more. She wasn''t sure how to process this. Can she really be saved? Can she really have hope? Should she trust a witch to provide her with hope? Find this and other great novels on the author''s preferred platform. Support original creators! I''m not sure, I''m not sure what to think anymore. Maybe believing in his words and promises isn''t a good idea, but what do I have to lose at this point? Emily pondered, her mind swirling with uncertainty in the solitude of her cell. One thing was for certain though, she didn''t want to die, she wanted to live.
The next day. The following day arrived, and Emily''s anxiety loomed large. She feared that Thandor might not materialize, that it was all an elaborate ruse to play with a desperate girl''s hope. Somehow, the hours in her cell on this day felt longer than the cumulative three days she had spent in captivity. When he said he''ll come tomorrow, he didn''t look to be lying to me, but what if he was? What if I''m only believing in him because I want what he''s saying to be true? Emily''s mind churned with doubt as the minutes crawled by. Suddenly, she heard footsteps approaching. Swiftly turning her head to identify the source, her eyes locked onto the deep blue eyes of a figure she had been anxiously waiting for. "T-Thandor!" she exclaimed, reaching towards the iron bars. "You actually came." she said, her voice carrying a mix of relief and gratitude. "Good day, Emily. And of course I came, I promised you after all." He said as he approached Emily. Durthon wasn''t with him this time, which made Emily feel relieved. "So, Thandor, will you be able to get me out of here?" she asked, her tone a blend of hope and trepidation. "Yes, though sadly not today, but tomorrow. I would have had you leave that cell today if I had my way, but a certain general did not make it easy on me." Thandor explained, sounding annoyed when he mentioned Durthon. "General? You mean Durthon?" Emily asked, though she already knew the answer. "Yes, him. He really hates our kind, as I''m sure you figured out." Thandor answered Our kind... It was still hard for Emily to think of herself as a witch. "I''m sorry, Emily. Even if it''s just one more day, I''m sure staying in this dreadful cell is far from comfortable." Thandor expressed, his voice laced with genuine sympathy. It really wasn''t comfortable. The straw pallet offered little respite, and the meager meals left much to be desired. Emily couldn''t shake the feeling that prolonged confinement would take a toll on her well-being. "I...I can handle one more day." She said as she forced a smile. "I suppose I should take this chance to explain a bit more, about our situation and yours." Thandor began, wanting to finish what he wasn''t allowed yesterday. "A-Alright. I''m listening." Emily nodded as she looked at Thandor. "Emily, you see, there is....a secret group, a group only a very small select group of people in the Kingdom of Arixad are allowed to know of. It''s called Aludell." Aludell? A secret group? "Aludell is a secret group that works for the King. It''s a relatively newly formed group. It''s duty is to serve his majesty while remaining in the shadows. The exitance of this group must never made public." Thandor continued to explain, sounding serious. Emily tried her best to keep up with him. "You see, what sets this group apart from others who serve the King is that it''s made up of witches. I''m the leader of that group, and I would like you to join it." Thandor stated, fixing his gaze on Emily, awaiting her response. Aludell is a group made up of witches? And it serves his majesty?! It was hard for the girl to wrap her mind around that idea. "Y-You mean the King is using....witches?" Emily spoke, scared to let out the words out of her mouth. "Yes. King Aricad II sees some benefit in utilizing our abilities, so he wants to employ us to his advantage where he can. However, this also means that the existence of our group must remain a secret at all costs. I''m sure you can imagine how the public would react if they found out that their King has witches working for him." Thandor explained further. Emily found it all difficult to believe, but she doubted Thandor was lying to her. What would be the point of conjuring such a fantastical tale? "Okay, I think I get it, but what does Aludell have to do with me? Why do you want me to join it?" Emily asked, her nerves palpable. "You see, Emily, in this country, witches historically only had one fate: death. However, you, I, and the other witches in Aludell are fortunate. We''re presented with another fate, another choice¡ªto live in service to his majesty." Thandor explained, his voice carrying a somber tone. Serve his majesty? Could I really do something like that? " I know that might not what you want to do with your life, Emily, but joining Aludell is the only way I can save you. If you joined, Durthon will be forced to let you go. Afterward, you''ll accompany me to where I and the other members of Aludell reside. Our home is here in the capital." Thandor continued, emphasizing that Emily''s options were limited if she desired to live¡ªand he wasn''t wrong. "Aludell...What sort of people are in it?" Emily asked. She knew Thandor was a kind man, but she had no idea what these other members would be like. Knowing they are witches did not make her feel any better, it was the opposite. "There are four members besides me. Three boys and one girl, all around your age, actually. I serve as something of a teacher to them." Thandor shared, the thought of those four putting a gentle smile on his beautiful face. Emily felt hesitant and scared. She''s not sure what she''s getting herself into, but she knew if she wanted to live, she had to join this group known as Aludell. After a minute of silence, Emily finally spoke in a shaky voice. "A-Alright, I''ll join. I''ll join Aludell! Please, take me with you, Thandor!" 1-1: A Normal Girl - Part 6 Ten years ago, in the year 848, King Leopold von Regnaris IV tragically died, leaving the throne to the then Prince Aricad, now King Aricad von Regnaris II. The Regnaris family ruled over the Kingdom of Arixad since as far back as our knowledge of history goes. They were even the ruling family back when the sun god, Arlin, still walked among humans. Liam''s POV On the same day Thandor was visiting Emily for the second time, Liam was out shopping, and he wasn''t alone. Being the capital, Arixalum was nearly never short on any type of supplies someone might need, well, usually at least. "So you don''t have any? Are you sure? Please double-check!" A vibrant 14-year-old girl with cascading red locks and striking green emerald eyes questioned the elderly spice merchant. "I''m sorry, I''ve run out of Ebonfire since last month." the apologetic vendor explained. " You know how that spice is produced in the Kingdom of Storith to the west, right? The problems there have made trading a real bitch let me tell you!" He complained. The girl gasped when she heard him say that bad word, which made Liam next to her chuckle. The girl swiftly turned her gaze up towards him, disapproval etched across her features. "Hey, don''t laugh at me!" she demanded. "Haha, sorry, Nicole." Liam chuckled, his attempt to stifle his laughter evident in the sincere twinkle of his eyes. The elderly spice merchant observed the duo with a warm smile playing on his lips. "Aren''t you two a precious couple." he remarked. "Er, actu¡ª" Liam began to correct, but before he could finish, Nicole interjected. "We''re not! Why would you think so?" She asked, feeling curious and and confused. And of course, she quickly denies it. "Well, I just often see you two here shopping together. Now, I did think you two looked a bit too young to be married, but I still thought you might be a couple at least." the merchant explained, attempting to justify his assumption. So, Nicole and I look like a couple, huh? I wonder if others who don''t know who we really are also see us that way when they look at us. "W-We''re not. We''re both just on cooking duty, so we always come shopping for food ingredients." Nicole explained, shedding light on their situation to the merchant. "Ohh, I see. I see. Excuse this old man for jumping to conclusions, okay?" the merchant apologized, feeling a bit silly for making assumptions. Nicole wasn''t lying, her and Liam were the ones on the cooking duty. Their teacher was good at many things, but cooking wasn''t one of them, Jaxon hated it and did not have the patience for it, and Karl was too young to be tasked with such a duty, so it fell onto the two of them. Lucky for the group, both Nicole and Liam didn''t mind, as they had a thing for cooking. Today was a day where he and Nicole went out to the plaza market to shop for food ingredients they needed. The plaza market sprawled out beneath a tapestry of colorful awnings, creating a lively kaleidoscope that contrasted against the backdrop of stone-paved pathways. Stalls lined the market, each a treasure trove of wares from both across the kingdom and outside of it. Brightly hued fabrics billowed in the breeze, framing the merchant stalls that offered an array of exotic spices, aromatic herbs, and vibrant produce. The air was alive with the symphony of vendors haggling and customers bargaining. The scent of various spices intermingled, creating an olfactory journey through the flavors of the world. Though maybe the best thing about it was how close it was to home. "Hmmmm, so he doesn''t have any Ebonfire, huh? Now I can''t make Karl that meal he really likes then." Nicole remarked, a hint of disappointment in her voice as she and Liam meandered through the vibrant plaza market. "Whatever is happening in the Kingdom of Storith must be getting serious if it''s effecting trade. It''s not on us to worry about that though." Liam commented as tried to keep up with Nicole, all the bags he is carrying full of stuff he and Nicole bought slowing him down. It was always like this, he''d always end up carrying most, if not all the bags, whenever they went shopping. He didn''t mind it though. The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings. Nicole abruptly halted, her attention captivated by a stall on her right. Liam caught up as she immersed herself in the display. "Hm? What are you looking at?" Liam asked, unsure. "Wait right here. I''ll go buy something real quick!" Nicole''s voice brimmed with excitement as she darted toward the stall that had seized her interest. There she goes... Liam took this chance to look behind him. He saw a knight. He knew this knight would be there. He also knew who this knight was. "Vincent Caldwell."Liam murmured under his breath, ensuring his words were lost in the bustling noise of the market. There he is, keeping an eye on us. I know it''s his job. I know they can''t let witches wonder out on their own, so they need some knights to keep an eye on us, but still. It''s not comfortable going about your day knowing a knight is right on your tail on every turn. Liam was abruptly pulled from his contemplations by the sensation of someone placing a delicate item around his neck. To his surprise, it was a white lily necklace. "N-Nicole? What''s this?" he inquired, puzzled by Nicole''s unexpected gesture. "What? We had extra money, now that we don''t need to buy any Ebonfire spice anymore. Might as well spend it!" she replied, a cheerful smile gracing her face. The two suns up at the sky making her green emerald eyes sparkle. "You really ARE bad with money." Liam said, not looking too pleased with the girl. " And why did you buy this?" He asked. "Didn''t you say the other day you wanted one? It''s really not a big deal, Liam. I doubt the others will object or have anything to say. Do you not like it?" she deftly attempted to change the topic about her being bad with money. "No...No, it''s not that. I do like it. Thank you." Liam admitted, examining the delicate necklace in his hands. It was normal for those who fellow the Arlinite faith to wear a white lily necklace. Though a witch wearing a white lily necklace is a bit ironic. "See? Now put a smile on your face!" Nicole insisted, a radiant smile lighting up her features. You can be so kind, yet so cruel, Nicole. You do things like this, and yet still somehow fail to realize how Jaxon, or I for that matter, feel about you. Or maybe you purposely don''t want to realize it. I''m not sure. Liam smiled, though it was the type of smile that someone hid pain behind it. Nicole did not notice. "Hey, are you two done now?" A knight asked as he approached them. It was Vincent. He did not look nor sound pleased. What''s his problem? "Yes, I believe we are." Liam responded, trying to hide how annoyed he was with this knight. "Then it''s time for you two to head home now. You''ve been out long enough!" Vincent spoke. "A-Alright. Let''s go home, Liam." Nicole said, sounding nervous. "Sure." Liam responded.
"There you two are!" Jaxon let out the moment Liam and Nicole took a step inside their home. "Sorry we were late!" Nicole apologized, trying to make Jaxon feel less irritated. "We''ll start cooking right no-" Liam stopped speaking as he noticed their teacher sitting on a chair next to a table, looking serious. Thandor Whitethorn was his name, and he''s 10 years older than Liam. "Teacher here has something he wants to talk to us about. Something important he says, where all of us need to be present." Jaxon explained, sounding irritated and serious. Is it a mission, perhaps?
Soon everyone took a seat around a wooden table in the kitchen. Thandor, Liam, Nicole, Jaxon, and Karl were all present. Karl, at the tender age of 9, was the youngest person there. His short deep black hair framed his face, and though he was the quietest of the group, Liam always thought of him as a sweet kid. "So? What''s the matter?" Jaxon was the first to break the silence, curiosity painted on his face. "I know this is about to sound sudden, but Aludell is on the verge of getting its final member tomorrow." Thandor declared, prompting gasps from everyone except Karl. "W-What?!" Liam exclaimed "Our final member? Tomorrow?" Nicole repeated his words, as if unsure what they meant. "T-That is very sudden!" Jaxon voiced his protest. "I know, I''m sorry. Sorry for not telling you all earlier, but it all happened so fast on my end too." Thandor apologized, his guilt apparent. A few minutes of heavy silence passed before Thandor resumed speaking. "This new member, she''s a girl, so you finally won''t be the only girl here, Nicole." Thandor said, glancing at Nicole before turning to Jaxon. "She''s also your age, Jaxon." Upon hearing the news, Nicole''s face lit up with a smile. "I was hoping our last member would be a girl!" she expressed with genuine happiness. "A girl....will she sleep in our room?" Karl finally spoke. "No, no, she won''t sleep with you boys. Nicole, you''ll have to share your room with her from now on." Thandor explained the living arrangements. There were 3 bedrooms in their house. One for Thandor, one for the other boys, and the last one for Nicole. Liam and Jaxon now seemed like the only two still taken aback by how sudden this was. "Thandor, can you explain more? More about this girl and less about where she''ll be sleeping, please." Liam requested, sounding annoyed. Jaxon nodded in agreement as Liam spoke. "Well....I''m not sure how much of her personal background I should share." Thandor replied, displaying hesitation and conflict. "Just share what you can!" Jaxon shouted, his frustration evident. "Oh alright, alright. No need to shout, Jaxon. As for this girl, her name is Emily." Thandor began as everyone looked at him. "She''s from....well, WAS from a small small village. Tragedy stuck though, which caused her power to awaken, but it also made it so she has no one left in this world who will look out for her. Now she''s locked in a cell over here at the capital." The mood around the table turned somber. Poor girl... "I...I see." Jaxon said, feeling a twinge of guilt for pressing Thandor to divulge such details. "So you see, I need everyone here to be very nice to her, okay? I''m especially talking to you here, Jaxon." Thandor said as looked at the boy, waiting for him to respond. "Y-You don''t have to tell me that! I know!" Jaxon lashed out. "I have one more question, teacher, what is her power? What is her magic?" Liam asked, feeling curious. Thandor smiled before answering. "Glad you asked. She can control water, just like you, Liam." 1-1: A Normal Girl - Part 7 - End "My dearest brother, I hope this letter finds you well. Have you been taking care of your health? You and our parents are always in my thoughts. I find myself missing all of you these days. Life within the castle walls isn''t easy. I feel that everyone''s eyes are always on me, always judging me. I know that as the Queen, as the King''s wife, I''m always going to be under the spot light, but I am uncertain about the extent to which I can endure it. I know I shouldn''t say this, but I can''t help but wish you''ll come here and take me away. Kidnap me if you must. I''m terrified of the day I get pregnant, brother, cause leaving then will truly become impossible." A letter by Queen Octavia, the mother of King Aricad II, sent to her brother.
Emily''s POV The promised day finally came, the day where Emily could leave this awful cell. Sleep eluded Emily as thoughts of Thandor and the group of witches, Aludell, occupied her restless mind. The knowledge that most of its members were close to her age provided a modicum of solace amid the uncertainty. Thandor wasted no time. He showed up first thing in the morning and had the knights open Emily''s cell, freeing her. Emily, grappling with disbelief, half-expected a sudden reversal, a proclamation that no witch would be permitted freedom. Yet, to her surprise, the knights acted without reservation. No outcry, no resistance. Just when she and Thandor were about to leave the knights garrison building, Durthon showed up. His countenance bore no trace of joy. "So, you''ve released her." Durthon remarked, his gaze scrutinizing Emily, who instinctively sought refuge behind Thandor. "Yes, indeed. The King granted his approval, as you must be aware." Thandor retorted, the mere mention of the King seeming to irk Durthon. "Silence! I''m not certain how you achieved it, but I''m convinced you bewitched the King somehow! Rest assured, I will find out what you did to him! And when I do, your head will adorn a spike." Durthon proclaimed with menace. "Ah, accusing me of using magic on the King? That''s a grave allegation. I wonder how he''ll respond when he hears of this." Thandor retorted, his tone laced with a subtle challenge. These two really don''t like each other. It''s scary. I don''t want to be here anymore. As Emily thought that to herself, she noticed Durthon looking at her. "And her....why did you pick her? You know you can''t add any more members to that freak group of yours anymore. You already have a girl in the group, why add another who''ll slow the group down even more?" Durthon continued, bitterness dripping from his words. "And what if she''s a girl? How does that pose a problem? Physical strength becomes irrelevant when it comes to magic." Thandor calmly asserted, a wry smile playing on his lips as he observed his words working their way under Durthon''s skin. Pressing the advantage, he continued, "It''s not as if she''s vying to join you or your knights for her gender to matter." "Leave. Leave before I commit a crime and kill you right now." Durthon retorted, his anger palpable, yet laced with a chilling seriousness. "Very well. We were on our way out anyway." Thandor responded, his tone nonchalant, as he took Emily''s hand and gracefully guided her away from the knights'' garrison.
The moment Emily stepped into the open air, a wave of relief washed over her. It had been days since she felt the warm embrace of the suns'' sunlight on her skin, and she savored the sensation. "That was so frightening, Thandor! I thought he was going to...attack you for a second there." Emily confessed, her voice and body still trembling. "I''m sorry you had to witness that. I had hoped we could leave without encountering him. If only we were that fortunate." Thandor expressed, his voice carrying a tone of apology. "And...what did he mean by you can''t have any more members join?" Emily inquired, curiosity piqued by Durthon''s earlier statement. "It''s one of the rules, you see. Aludell isn''t allowed to exceed six members. Having more than that would be deemed too many witches for comfort or something of the sort." Thandor explained, a hint of dissatisfaction with the rule evident in his tone. Oh...wait, does that mean if another witch is caught, Thandor won''t be able to free them? Emily couldn''t help but feel guilt when she realized this. She wondered if she had taken the spot of somehow who had more to live for than her, as she had nothing anymore. Thandor noticed the sadness in Emily''s expression. "What''s wrong? What''s on your mind? I thought you''d be more happy to be out of that place." He inquired. "I was just thinking that maybe...Durthon was right. Perhaps you shouldn''t have saved me. Maybe you should have preserved that last spot for a boy or someone who might be more useful to you..." Emily confessed, revealing the turmoil within her. Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation. Thandor, sensing the weight of Emily''s inner turmoil, bent down so that his eyes met hers at the same level. His comforting gaze met her troubled eyes, and he spoke with a gentle sincerity. "Emily, I never pass up the chance to save someone. The thought of how ''useful'' they may or may not be doesn''t come to my mind. It''s true I might not be able to save the next witch who gets captured, but I wouldn''t be able to live with myself if I let you die. Everyone deserves a chance to live, and you are no exception. " Thandor reassured her, his voice steady and kind. He reached out and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, offering comfort in his touch. "Also, even if you were a boy, Durthon would still have found something to criticize. Don''t let his comments bother you." As Emily absorbed Thandor''s words, a sense of reassurance began to replace the lingering guilt. His words resonated with a warmth that eased the burden on Emily''s heart. She felt as if she was about to cry. "T-Thank you...and okay, I won''t let it bother me anymore." She said quickly as she looked at the ground, not wanting Thandor to see her watery eyes. "Now, let''s'' go. Everyone in Aludell is waiting to meet you." Thandor spoke as he took her hand again and started guiding her through the big capital.
As Thandor walked Emily through the bustling streets of Arixalum, the capital grandeur unfolded before her eyes. The vibrant tapestry of colors, the lively chatter of merchants, and the harmonious symphony of daily life replaced the grim memory of her previous journey through these streets with Durthon. Emily couldn''t help but marvel at the beauty of the capital, and she turned to Thandor with a wide-eyed expression. "It''s so different seeing the capital like this! I couldn''t take a good look when I first came here with Durthon." Emily remarked, her voice filled with awe. Thandor, walking beside her, his hand still holding hers, smiled. "Arixalum is a big place. I''m sure you find it overwhelming, but don''t worry, you''ll get used to it with time." Emily was so overwhelmed by the sights, she didn''t notice the knight following them to keep an eye on them. Thandor knew he was there though, but didn''t feel like it was the right time to tell her about this. He thought the girl has had seen enough out of knights these last couple of days and deserve a break from them. As they continued walking, the duo reached Silverbreeze Street, where the Aludell house stood. The street lived up to its name, with a gentle breeze carrying the scent of flowers from nearby gardens. The houses on either side were adorned with intricate carvings and colorful window shutters, creating a picturesque scene. Emily never saw anything like it. "And here we are, Silverbreeze Street. This is where Aludell calls home." Thandor announced, gesturing towards a charming house nestled amidst the others. The Aludell house was a two-story structure with ivy-clad walls and a welcoming blue door. A small garden adorned the front, filled with vibrant blooms that swayed in the gentle breeze. Thandor led Emily to the entrance. What a beautiful house. It looks just like the other houses around here. Doubt anyone will guess a group of witches live here by looking of it, I wouldn''t have guesses so. "Welcome to your new home, Emily." Thandor said with a warm smile, unlocking the door and inviting her inside. Will this beautiful place truly be my new home? Can I believe those words?
As they stepped in, Emily couldn''t help but feel a sense of belonging. The interior was both cozy and warm. It wasn''t the same type of warm her house in Saalinna gave, but it was a similar one. "Oh, they''re here!" exclaimed a girl, running towards the group while holding the hand of a younger boy. "Time to start introductions. Emily, this is Nicole, she''s a little older than you are. And that boy is Karl, the youngest here." Thandor introduced them as he walked to their side. Nicole had cascading red locks and striking green emerald eyes, which complemented her radiant smile. Emily found her to be beautiful. Emily''s mom used to tell her fairy tales about princes and princesses, and this girl, Nicole, is how Emily always imagined princesses to look like. Karl, on the contrary, didn''t display much expression on his face, though Emily did find it adorable how he''s holding Nicole'' hand. He had short deep black hair and iris colored eyes. "It''s nice to meet you!" Nicole said, sounding cheerful. "....Hello...."" Karl greeted as well. "Um, h-hello. My name is Emily." she introduced herself, not entirely sure what to say. "Nicole, where are Liam and Jaxon?" Thandor asked, wondering where the missing members are. "Oh, they are in the training room." Nicole answered. Training room? Is it for...magic? "Karl, can you go get them for m-" Before Thandor could finish, he heard approaching footsteps. "No need! We''re coming!" Jaxon shouted as he and Liam approached the rest of the group. "There you two are! Come here and introduce yourselves!" Thandor demanded. "So you''re Emily, huh? I was told we''re the same age, but I see I''m taller than you. My name is Jaxon." he introduced himself, not sounding overly interested in Emily. He had blond hair and brown eyes. Emily also noticed he wore a glove on his left hand, but not on his right one. She found it strange, but the other boy, Liam, made her lose any focus she had on Jaxon. "Hello, Emily. It''s...great to have you with us. Welcome to Aludell. My name is Liam." The older boy named Liam introduced himself. Emily couldn''t help but widen her eyes in surprise. His chestnut brown hair. His hazel eyes. His face. He looked so much like Jack, an older version of him, a version Jack would never get the chance to become. If she didn''t know better, she would have thought it was Jack. Everyone noticed Emily was looking strange as she stared at Liam. "A-Are you okay?" Liam asked, his confusion and concern evident in his voice. Emily felt an impulse to rush toward the boy, an overwhelming desire to embrace him and offer an apology to him. She wanted to apologize to Jack¡ªyet, she reined herself in. This boy wasn''t Jack. The Jack she knew is is nowhere anymore. Not here, and not anywhere. Tears welled up once more, escaping her eyes. "I-I''m sorry! You just look so much like someone I used to know!" She apologized. She felt embarrassed crying in front of people she had just met like this, but she couldn''t stop the tears hard as she tried. Thandor approached Emily and enveloped her in a comforting hug. "Emily, what you''ve been through isn''t easy. While we can never replace your family and loved ones that you lost, we can still be your other family. You see, Emily, as witches, none of us here in Aludell have much family anymore. All we have is each other. So...we''ll be here for you. You are part of our little family here now, okay?" Thandor spoke with a gentle voice, and the rest of the group regarded them with eyes brimming with empathy and sadness. That night, Emily slept in Nicole''s room. With no bed arranged for her yet, she shared Nicole''s bed. Throughout the night, Nicole embraced her like a caring mother holding her child. Sleep, however, remained elusive for Emily, her mind consumed by a whirlwind of thoughts. Family....They''ll be my family. Chapter 1: A Normal Girl - End 1-2: A New Home, A New Family - Part 1 Emilio''s POV A month had passed since the brutal assault on the village of Saalnia. A young boy of 15 years of age walked alone, the two suns above shining on his blond hair and green eyes. He trudged on, growing weary with each step. Sweat coated his body, his legs ached, and the pangs of hunger and thirst gnawed at him, yet he persisted without stopping. Where was he going? Nowhere. He has no home anymore, nor anywhere to go, and yet he kept going with no destination in mind. Whenever he paused to rest, the haunting images of the dark day he returned to his home, his village, after running a simple errand, come to mind. His village was mostly destroyed. Most people he knew and loved, including his parents, died. They were killed by a group of bandits. And if that wasn''t horrible enough, he learned his younger sister is a witch, and that she was taken to the capital, Arixalum, to be executed. He still remember how the villagers looked at him, as if he was a witch as well. He felt hurt, but he did share blood with his sister, so he couldn''t blame them for being disgusted by him. He supposed there was a chance he could be a witch himself. Emilio couldn''t fathom why he hadn''t embraced the release of death. Perhaps a masochistic desire to endure the pain his parents suffered before their demise or an innate fear of the unknown kept him going. He couldn''t pinpoint the reason. It would be so much easier to just die and join Dad, Mom, and Emily on the other side... And yet he kept going as he took another set of steps on grass. Emilio was certain his sister, Emily, had met her end. His parents were no more. And he could tell the villagers wanted nothing with him, as after all, he may or may not be a witch himself. Though the worst part of it all is that he couldn''t say goodbye to any of his loved ones. They were just taken from him suddenly and without warning. Why am I even still trying to keep going? What for? For who? For who am I still alive? Abruptly, Emilio collapsed onto the grass, his stomach against the ground. Exhaustion claimed him, rendering him unable to rise. He lay there, resigned to his fate. I''m going to die here, aren''t I? Emilio once had hopes and dreams, he really wanted to become a knight, travel around the world, and experience all kind of things not found in his small village, but now? He was ready to let all of that go die there, alone, with no one to find his body. He closed his eyes, shortly after he was out of it.
"Hey! Young man! Can you hear me?!" A commanding voice cut through the haze surrounding Emilio. It belonged to a man, and Emilio could sense the urgency in his tone. The next thing he felt was being turned onto his back and shaken. A sudden splash of water hit Emilio''s face, jolting him into a stark awareness. Who...? Wait, I''m still alive? Slowly, he pried his eyes open, greeted by the sight of two individuals. An elderly man with distinguished gray hair stood before him, the one responsible for shaking him awake. Slightly behind him, there was a woman in her mid 20s, her presence exuding an air Emilio has never felt before. "He opened his eyes, Harold." the woman informed in a calm voice, pointing towards Emilio. "That he did, milady!" Harold, the elderly man, responded with evident relief. "Hey, are you okay?" he inquired, genuine concern etched on his face. Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation. "....N-No, no I''m not. Let me go.." Emilio uttered in a low voice, attempting to push Harold away, though his strength waned. Who are these two? How did they find me? It was then Emilio noticed the elegant carriage nearby. It must belong to these two, he surmised. "Let you go? I''m afraid I can''t do that, not in your state," Harold spoke with kindness, dismissing Emilio''s plea. "Ju-just let me die here....." Emilio spoke somehow, sounding as exhausted as he looked. Harold exchanged a concerned glance with the lady behind him. "Lady Celestia, what should we do?" He sought guidance. Celestia took few steps closer to Harold and Emilio. He now could see her better, and he found her beautiful. Lady Celestia stood with an air of refined grace. Her attire spoke of noble lineage, adorned with tasteful embellishments that accentuated her elegance. The fabric of her gown, a rich sapphire blue, cascaded in gentle folds that added to the sense of royalty she exuded. A delicate silver necklace adorned her neck. Her hair, a lustrous cascade, fell in gentle waves around her shoulders. A shade of chestnut brown, it complemented her fair complexion, while eyes were a captivating hue of hazel. If Emilio had the strength, a sardonic laugh might have escaped his lips. In the throes of impending death, his mind seemed to find the capacity to appreciate the beauty of the woman before him. "You want to die? Why? You''re too young to be throwing away your life like this." she spoke, her tone carrying a weight of seriousness that demanded attention. "I...My parents and village were....attacked, and..." Emilio tried to explain, he wasn''t sure why he was trying to explain to this woman his reasons, he just felt like he needed too. "Here, drink this. Drink some water." Harold intervened, offering a leather flask filled with water. Initially resistant, Emilio eventually yielded and took a sip while Celestia observed him intently, her thoughts concealed behind an enigmatic gaze. "Your loved ones died? Is that why you want to die now as well?" Celestia inquired, her question more rhetorical than seeking a genuine response. "Think of your parents. Do you think they want their son to die here? Like this? I''m sure they didn''t raise you to be this type of man. No parents in the Kingdom of Arixad would raise their son to be a coward like this." Though her words bore a harsh edge, Emilio sensed a touch of compassion in her eyes. Emilio stayed silent, he wasn''t sure what to say. She was right, he was sure both his parents and Emily would want him to live, if not for him, then for them, and yet knowing this did not make it easier. "I... I don''t have anything anymore. No one to be with, and nowhere to go." Emilio confessed, his voice quivering as he stared at the grass, avoiding direct eye contact. "So you simply give up if you have nothing anymore? Are you that type of person?" Celestia''s words sliced through the air, her tone unyielding. "M-Milady, please go easy on the boy." Harold implored, sensing Emilio''s fragile state. "Oh, but I am going easy on him. Hey, boy, what''s your name?" Celestia asked. "My name is...Emilio." He introduced himself, for some reason feeling hesitant to tell her his name. "Celestia Sterling. And this here is Harold, he served me and my family for as long as I remember." She replied "We sure weren''t expecting to run into a boy lying in the middle of the road on our way back from the capital! It sure gave this old man a shock!" Harold added with concern, eyeing Emilio. The capital, huh? So they were in the capital, that''s where Emily.... Emilio''s thoughts were getting clouded in dark thoughts again, but Celestia''s voice snapped him out of it. "Emilio, if you have nothing more, as you say, if you need a purpose to keep going, then I''ll give you one. Come with me to Farnworth to the south, where my home is, and work for me as a servant." she said, her tone serious, shocking both Emilio and Harold. "M-Milady, what are you saying?! We can''t just do that!" Harold protested, taken aback. "Why not? It''s much better than him throwing away his life. I''m doing his parents a favor. And if he ever decides he wants to do something else and stop working for me, he can. I won''t force him to stay. So, what do you say, Emilio?" Celestia''s gaze rested on him, and he felt a mixture of shock and uncertainty. Go work for her? As her servant? In Farnworth? "What do you say? Or do you have another path in life you''d rather take that doesn''t end up with you throwing away your life? I''ll pay you and give you a place to stay. Frankly, I doubt you have a better option than this, Emilio." Celestia continued, sounding convincing. "W-Why? You don''t even know me, and yet you are inviting me to your home?" Emilio asked, baffled by her actions. "No, no I don''t. I doubt you are dangerous though, and even if you were by some chance, you don''t scare me. What kind of woman would I be if I let a little boy like you scare me?" Celestia declared. What should I do? Should I go with her? I don''t really have a reason too, but I also don''t have a reason not too. Not like I have anything left to lose anymore. After a minute of silence, Emilio finally spoke. "A-Alright, I''ll go with you. I''ll go with you to Farnworth" And that was the day Emilio entered Celestia''s world. Was she a savior who entered his life, or a nightmare he would regret? He didn''t know, but he was certain of one thing: She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. 1-2: A New Home, A New Family - Part 2 "Hey, did you find out what that was all about the other day?" The first knight asked. "You mean the argument between sir Durthon and that long haired man the other day? No, and I think it''s better we don''t ask. I have a feeling sir Durthon doesn''t want us talking about it." The second knight responded. "You''re right, though I can''t help but wonder if that little girl that was thrown here for being a thief had something to do with it or not." The first knight continued. "I''m not sure. I did wonder what she could have stolen to cause her to be thrown in the cell like that." The second knight said as he tried to remember Emily. "Well, whatever that was about, she''s with that beautiful man now." The first knight spoke, which caused his friend to turn to look at him. "Beautiful? Wait, don''t tell me you''re into-" "No I''m not! You know I didn''t mean it like that!" The first knight shouted, embarrassed. A gossip between two knights who were there in the knights garrison the day Thandor took Emily out of her cell and then was confronted by Durthon.
Emily''s POV One month slipped away since Emily joined Aludell. During the first week, Emily barely got out of bed. She just wanted to sleep, cry, and mourn. She finally had the time to mourn her family and loved ones after all. During this week, she kept sharing the bed with Nicole, until they finally got her a bed on her eighth day. Emily felt that she was going to miss Nicole''s warm embraces at night, but she also thought she must have been a bother to Nicole these last couple of days, so maybe it''s for the best. Nicole''s room was where Emily spent most of her time at the start. The room exuded a warm and inviting atmosphere, just like its owner. The walls, painted in a calming shade of lavender. A large, arched window on one side allowed the soft moonlight to filter through sheer curtains, casting a gentle glow over the room. There were a desk in one corner of the room, with a vanity besides it with a slightly weathered mirror held an assortment of makeup and trinkets, reflecting Nicole''s personal touches. The centerpiece of the room was a bed with an intricately carved wooden headboard. The bedspread, a patchwork of vibrant fabrics. A plush assortment of pillows, each uniquely embroidered by Nicole herself, adorned the bed, giving it an inviting and cozy aura. As for Emily''s bed, it was in the corner of the room. The bed, adorned with fresh linens and a soft comforter, offered a comfortable sanctuary for the girl. A small nightstand beside the bed held a candle and a vase of freshly picked flowers, contributing to the room''s serene ambiance. While Emily found great comfort in this room, she also knew she shouldn''t spend all her time here. She is a member of Aludell now, whatever that means she still isn''t fully sure yet, but she knew it meant she should spend more time outside of this room at least. Emily found Nicole easy to approach and talk too, but she wasn''t sure what she made up of the boys in Aludell just yet. Karl was one quiet 9 years old. Emily found him to talk even less than her. She never seen a little boy like that before, so she found him very strange. All the boys around Karl''s age back in her village, Saalnia, were loud and energetic. She remembered when Jack was that age just how much trouble he used to get into. He was a huge brat. Karl on the other hand barely spoke or moved, he seemed so fragile to Emily for some reason. He didn''t seem the type to open up easily to others either. One day, while Karl was sitting in the living room, doing nothing, Emily stared at him as she stood somewhat away from him. Is he okay? Does he never play? Kids his age are always playing around back in Saalnia. "Emily! You are up! Do you need something?" Nicole''s cheerful voice interrupted her thoughts. "Oh, um, nothing, I was just....thinking about Karl. Is he always like that?" Emily asked, concern evident in her voice. "Yes, he is." Nicole answered with a sad smile as she also looked at Karl. "You''ll get used to it." There were also Jaxon, the boy who was Emily''s age. He stood out as the most boisterous among the group Emily felt as if he didn''t like her sometimes, she wasn''t sure though. He spent a lot of time in the training room with Liam, a room Emily has never been too since she came here. For the two weeks, Emily and Jaxon rarely spoke, but then one day he suddenly approached her. "Cleaning duty?" Emily queried, puzzled. Help support creative writers by finding and reading their stories on the original site. "Yes. With Liam and Nicole on cooking duty, you''ll join Karl and me for cleaning duty." Jaxon declared, his tone assertive. "I hate to say this about Karl, but he''s not the best at cleaning, making it feel like I have to do his share of the work as well." Jaxon continued explaining, his demeanor reflecting discontent. Well, I should do more to carry my weight around here... And just like that, Emily found herself assigned to cleaning duty. It didn''t bother her; instead, cleaning provided a welcome reprieve, a distraction from the weight on her mind. It also offered her more time with Karl and Jaxon, though she still wasn''t sure if she was getting closer to either of them. It was around this time Emily noticed how it''s always Liam and Jaxon in the training room, and how Nicole and Karl nearly never go there. A part of her was curious, but she didn''t ask. If magic takes place in that room, she''d rather not see it. She''d rather think about magic as little as possible. And lastly, there was Liam. The boy who looks just like an older Jack. Emily learned he was 15 years of age, which is the age of Emilio, her older brother. Not that this fact changed anything, Emily still tried her best to avoid Liam. She felt that she made things awkward between them in their first meeting, which did not help. Not to mention, whenever she looks at his face, her heart hurts. She knew Liam did nothing wrong, but she felt as if she just can''t be around him. "Alright, we''re going now. I won''t take long." Liam announced as he and Karl left the house, Liam holding Karl''s hand. "Bye bye." Karl spoke as he waved goodbye in his free hand. "Okay, be careful!" Nicole waved back at them as they closed the door. "Hm? Where did they go?" Emily inquired, having just descended the stairs as Liam and Karl embarked on their journey. "Oh, they''re going to the church. There is one close to hear." Nicole answered, which was when Emily picked up on how devoted Liam was. He even had that white lily necklace he always wore everywhere. In Saalnia, churches were nonexistent, so Emily would be lying if she said she wasn''t curious how one looks like or feels, but at the same time she didn''t feel like she could ever ask Liam to take her with him. She can''t even look at him right now. Emily wasn''t sure if she could think of these people as family yet. Thandor told her to think of them as her other family, but she wasn''t sure how easy that''ll be. She knew she didn''t hate them at least. And on the topic of Thandor, Emily noticed how members of Aludell call him ''teacher'', so that was something she wanted to pick up on as well. Emily felt Thandor was too young to be a father figure, and too old to be an older brother figure, so a teacher figure seemed perfect for him. Thandor had been consistently kind to Emily since the day they met, and that warmth persisted even after a month had passed. Emily couldn''t shake off a sense of guilt, recognizing that she had done nearly nothing since joining Aludell, and Thandor, understanding the weight of her mourning, refrained from pushing her. Also, among the members of Aludell, Thandor spent the least time at home. His schedule was always full, and while Emily wasn''t certain of the specifics, she just assumed that being the leader of Aludell left little room for free time. However, when Thandor did have free time and was at home, he''ll give the other members of Aludell a lesson in the ''class room'', which was next to the training room. One day, he extended an invitation to Emily. "Emily, if you''re comfortable, I''d like you to join us for today''s lesson. If you enjoy it, you''re welcome to attend whenever I hold these sessions." Thandor proposed with a gentle smile, careful not to impose. "W-What type of lessons do you give, Th-, I mean, teacher?" She asked, correcting herself. "About everything, really. I try not to stick to one topic. Today, I''m going over something related to magic. I''ve covered it once before, but since you and Karl weren''t present, I''d like both of you to hear it." He explained. A topic about magic....as a witch, I really shouldn''t get the shivers every time I think of magic, but I can''t help it. Thandor doesn''t give lessons everyday though, so I''d feel bad refusing his offer here. "A-Alright, I''ll come."
Emily went into the class room for the first time. The classroom was a cozy space adjacent to the training room, bathed in soft, warm lighting that emanated from strategically placed lanterns. A large wooden desk stood at the front, covered with parchment, quills, and various books. Thandor''s presence at the desk immediately drew attention. The Aludell members, including Emily, took their seats on wooden chairs arranged in a semicircle facing the desk. There were a seat and a desk for each member. Liam was in the middle, Emily to his left, and Karl to her left, while Nicole was on Liam''s right, and Jaxon was to her right. "I see everyone is present." Thandor noted, scanning each member. "Let''s start then. Liam, Nicole, Jaxon, you three are familiar with today''s topic, but a refresher won''t hurt." Jaxon rolled his eyes as Thandor finished speaking, not looking too pleased about having to take the same lesson again. "Is it about witches and their magic, teacher?" Liam inquired. Emily was seated next to him, which made it hard for her as she doesn''t want to look at his face. "Yes, it is. Does anyone have anything they''d like to say before I start?" Thandor asked, and Emily tentatively raised her hand. "I do, if it''s okay. I um, have a question, teacher." "Oh, sure, go ahead, Emily." Thandor encouraged, feeling curious about what her question might be. "I was wondering, is teaching part of your role as the leader of Aludell? I mean, is it something you have to do?" Emily voiced a question that had lingered in her mind the last few days. She just couldn''t understand why a group like Aludell would need a teacher. Thandor smiled, appreciating her curiosity "No, it''s not a mandatory part of my role. No one assigns me the task of being a teacher, but it''s something I wanted. All of you are young, and there''s much about life you don''t know. Being part of Aludell means serving the king, so I want you all to be well-informed about knowledge that may or may not prove useful." Thandor explained as everyone else stared at him. Wow...Taking the role of a teacher on top of being the leader of Aludell really can''t be easy. And he gives lessons on his free time too. "Also, if you all weren''t witches and were regular kids, Liam, Jaxon, Karl, you three would likely be attending school now, right? I''m trying to provide some of what was taken from you." Thandor continued, his tone carrying a touch of melancholy. "Teacher, you really take on more than you can handle..." Liam remarked, expressing a shared sense of concern. "Truly, I worry you might collapse from overworking one day, teacher." Nicole added, sounding concerned. A school, there were no such thing in my village. I wonder how the life of a student who attends such a place is. "Anyway, if that answers your question, Emily, let''s begin our lesson!" Thandor declared, trying to infuse cheer into the atmosphere. 1-2: A New Home, A New Family - Part 3 Emily''s POV The classroom''s warm illumination gently embraced the Aludell members, and a hushed anticipation lingered in the air as Thandor prepared to delve into the day''s lesson. Emily sat in her designated seat, feeling a mix of curiosity and trepidation about the subject¡ªmagic. "Today, I''ll be sharing some insights about witches and their magic. It''s a topic that''s not widely understood due to the tragic fate that often befalls those who possess this extraordinary ability. It might be a weird thing to say, but there isn''t much known about our kind." Thandor began, his tone carrying a weight of solemnity. Liam, Nicole, and Jaxon, who were more accustomed to Thandor''s teachings, listened attentively. Karl didn''t show much expression since he entered the classroom, thouugh Emily felt he was also listening. "Witches tend to awaken their magic in moments of great emotional intensity, typically during a traumatic event." Thandor explained, carefully choosing his words. "It''s as if the surge of emotions acts as a catalyst, unlocking the dormant potential within them." I see....I suppose I can believe that, after all, it was when Jack died in front of my eyes that I awakened these powers of mine... The thought of Jack made Emily''s heart hurt, but she continued listening. "However, it''s important to note that the specifics of what triggers this awakening remain elusive. Each witch''s experience is unique, tied to their own emotions and circumstances." Thandor continued. "Can witches have different kinds of magic, teacher?" Jaxon asked, breaking the silence that followed Thandor''s explanation. "That''s a question with no definitive answer. The truth is, very little about witches is known or recorded. Historically, witches have been met with immediate condemnation and execution for practicing magic. As a result, our understanding of their abilities is clouded by fear and ignorance." Thandor clarified, his expression reflecting the weight of the uncharted territory they were delving into. "It''s uncertain whether witches can possess varied forms of magic or if the magic they awaken is the only type of magic they''d ever get. As members of Aludell, as witches who were allowed to live, I hope that''s a question we will be able to answer one day." Thandor added, emphasizing the importance of Aludell as a group. Emily realized then how little she knew about the members of Aludell. She didn''t know what type of magic any of them used, nor how did they awaken their power to begin with. Though maybe they don''t want to talk about it, it''s not like I told them what happened to me or what my power is. Emily thought to herself, not realizing Thandor already told the group she can control water.
Before long, Thandor concluded his brief lesson. As everyone prepared to leave, Nicole approached Thandor with a request. "Excuse me, teacher, can I ask a favor?" she inquired. "Oh? What is it, Nicole?" Thandor responded. "Would it be okay if I took Emily to my favorite dessert place, Amore? She hasn''t left home at all this past month. That can''t be healthy." Nicole explained, her concern evident. Emily, in turn, was surprised, as Nicole hadn''t discussed this plan with her beforehand. "I don''t mind on my end, though would Emily want that?" Thandor said, he and Nicole turning to look at Emily. The other boys also shifted their attention towards her, making her blush a little under the sudden scrutiny. "Um, I mean, I-I don''t mind! If it''s okay, of course." She answered, feeling a bit hesitant to agree. It''s true, I haven''t went outside since I got here. I''ve never spent so much time inside before. Going out for some fresh air isn''t a bad idea. Nicole smiled upon hearing Emily''s agreement. "I''m glad!" she exclaimed with a broad smile, then continued, "The rest of you should come too." she added, directing her gaze toward the boys. "Oh, won''t that be lovely? In that case, I''ll come along too." Thandor added, sporting a smile as well. "I was planning on training after this lesson." Jaxon said, not sounding too pleased about the idea of going out. "Sorry, Nicole." He then apologized with soft smile, Emily has never seen Jaxon with that expression before. "Andddd if Jaxon is staying, then I have to stay and train as well." Liam chimed in, which Emily found odd. If Jaxon has to train, Liam has to stay with him? This has to have something to do with their magic power. A part of me really is curious, yet another part of me doesn''t want to know what that''s about. "Aw, well, what about you Karl?" Nicole, sounding disappointed, turned her attention to the young boy. "I''m not sure...." He responded. "Well, if Liam and Jaxon are going to spend their time in the training room, you''d be all by yourself here, so I say come with us!" Nicole said, sounding a little forceful. And just like that, it was decided the four of them will be going to Amore. Emily''s outfit consisted of a knee-length, A-line skirt in a soft, pastel shade that complemented her fair complexion. The skirt featured subtle floral patterns, adding a touch of femininity to her look. Her choice of a fitted, short-sleeved blouse took on a classic allure, crafted from a lightweight fabric with a hint of texture. The blouse featured a high neckline adorned with intricate lace detailing And lastly, to ward off the gentle chill in the air, Emily draped herself in a loose-knit shawl which looked delicately woven,., its warm hues harmonizing with the overall ensemble. Emily has never worn anything like this before, there was no such pretty clothes back in her village. She couldn''t believe it was her she was looking at in the mirror in Nicole''s room. Oh, I must have kept them waiting! I should hurry down stairs! The thought spurred Emily into action. She dashed down the stairs, eager to join the others. However, as she descended, she encountered Liam and Jaxon. A pang of discomfort seized her heart. "....That outfit looks good on you." Liam said, with an awkard smile. He wasn''t sure how to approach Emily. "...T-Thank you. I''ve never worn anything like this before." Emily thanked him for the compliment, trying to sound normal. "You should go, you know, all of them are waiting for you outside." Jaxon interjected, redirecting the conversation as he turned toward Liam. "Let''s go, Liam." With that, he began walking towards the training room. This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author''s consent. Report any appearances on Amazon. Liam gave Emily one last awkward smile before he turned to follow Jaxon, Emily couldn''t smile back.
The moment Emily took a step outside, she almost screamed. She was expecting to see Karl, Nicole, and Thandor, but there was one more person with them, a knight. W-Who''s that?! Why is a knight here? "Emily! You look so good in that outfit." Nicole smiled as she looked at Emily from up to down. She was also holding Karl''s arm. Nicole then noticed Emily was looking at the knight behind her with a scared look. Nicole turned to look at Thandor. "Teacher, did you not tell her about this?" She asked, sounding worried. "I haven''t, no. It didn''t seem there was a right time." Thandor spoke as he walked towards Emily, the knight glaring daggers at his back. "Emily, there is something you need to know. As witches, we aren''t allowed to wonder off freely however we want. There are some knights tasked with keeping an eye out for us when we leave our house. This here is one of them. His name is Gareth Stonehelm, general Durthon''s nephew." Thandor explained as he introduced the knight. Durthon''s nephew?! Gareth Stonehelm had the same deep ebony hair his uncle, with the same set of serious eyes, though Gareth was much younger, being only 18 years of age. He had a sword at side, which made Emily all the more nervous. "Hmph! How has she been part of your group for a month and you still haven''t explained this to her?!" Gareth spoke out, his irritation palpable. "It''s none of your business how I handle things related to Aludell, Gareth." Thandor responded, not looking too happy about the knight''s tone. Nicole, sensing Emily''s discomfort, attempted to lighten the mood. "Well, now that you know, let''s head to Amore. It''s a charming little place, and you''ll love the desserts! This will be the first time Karl goes there too." "R-Right, lets go." Emily said, still looking and sounding nervous. So a knight is going to keep watch over us all the time while we''re outside? That makes me feel uneasy, even more so knowing he''s that man''s nephew... As the four Aludell members walked, Gareth walked behind them. He was far enough that any passerby won''t think he''s with the Aludell group, nor far enough that he can''t interfere if someone from Aluudell tried to pull something they shouldn''t, though it was far enough where he couldn''t hear what they were saying. "Gareth Stonehelm, you see Emily, he only ever follows me around when I go outside. I''m sure his lovely uncle told him to keep an eye on me at all times." Thandor spoke in a quiet voice as he walked to the left of Emily. "I see. So, if you''re not with us, other knights would keep an eye on us?" Emily inquired. "Yes, precisely. I know it''s not easy, but try to ignore their presence, it''ll make your life easier." Thandor suggested. I''ll just try to never look behind me, cause I know he''s there... Glancing to her right, Emily found Karl and Nicole. "So....Karl, it''s your first time going to Amore as well?" Emily prompted, eager to shift the topic. Karl glanced up and responded with minimal emotion. "Yes, I''ve never been there." he replied, his voice devoid of much inflection. "Oh? How come? I''m surprised you haven''t taken him before, Nicole." Emily redirected her question to the older girl. "Well, Karl hasn''t been with Aludell much longer than you have, so the opportunity never presented itself, sadly." Nicole explained, a tinge of regret in her voice. "Oh?" Emily murmured, absorbing this new piece of information. "He joined Aludell a few days short of a month before you did." Thandor added, providing context. This realization let her not only realize how little she knew about the group again, but it also made her feel bad for Karl. Being a witch, did Karl go through something similar me? Was a boy his age also thrown in a scary cell like I did? She looked at the younger boy again, who didn''t seem to be paying much attention to this conversation. She took his left hand, now one hand is held by Nicole, and the other by Emily. "O-Oh?" Karl uttered in surprise. "Can I hold your hand too, Karl?" Emily asked, offering a warm smile. Though she knew a simple gesture might not mean much, she hoped it conveyed her care for him. "Sure..." He responded. "Awww, look at us! If one of us was a boy, Emily, we would had looked like two parents with their child!" Nicole quipped, injecting humor into the moment. "Haha..." Emily let out an awkward laugh.
Amore, nestled in a proximity close to Silverbreeze Street, exuded an old-world charm. The quaint establishment bore the marks of time with its weathered wooden facade, adorned with flowering vines that seemed to embrace the building in a gentle, natural hug. A faded sign, once vibrant, swayed lightly in the breeze, signaling the presence of the cozy haven. A scattering of small, round tables with worn but sturdy wooden chairs graced the exterior of the place. The inviting outdoor seating area was adorned with potted plants, their leaves reaching out in a vibrant display of greenery. The fragrance of blooming flowers lingered in the air, mingling with the tantalizing scent of baked goods wafting from the bakery. Inside, the bakery unfolded into a warm and welcoming space. The rustic charm continued indoors, with exposed wooden beams crisscrossing the ceiling. Shelves adorned with jars of preserves, antique teacups, and handcrafted trinkets lined the walls. A large counter, showcasing an array of delectable pastries and confections, stood as the centerpiece. Large windows allowed ample natural light to filter into the room, creating a cozy atmosphere. The mismatched but well-loved furniture, from plush armchairs to sturdy wooden tables, invited patrons to linger and enjoy their treats. The soft hum of conversation, the clinking of cutlery, and the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee contributed to the delightful ambiance. Emily has never seen anything like this before. The capital sure has many things my small village doesn''t have. It''s a different world over here. To think I almost didn''t see any of this too. Emily and Nicole ended up both picking a carrot cake slice to eat. They went and sat outside as Thandor and Karl still made their choices. Emily couldn''t resist taking an eager bite of her cake, the anticipation too great to wait for the boys. The moment the delightful flavors danced on her taste buds, Emily couldn''t contain her excitement. "Oh my god! This is so good!" she exclaimed, a radiant smile illuminating her face. Nicole, delighted that Emily embraced her dessert recommendation, grinned in response. "See? I told you that you should give this one a try." "...Thank you for bringing me here, Nicole. If not for you, I wouldn''t have learned such place or delicious food exist in the world." Gratitude swelled within Emily, which made Nicole lost for words for a second. "C-Come on now, you make it sound as if I did something greater than it actually is. I only brought you to my favorite dessert place." Nicole said, sounding embarrassed, trying to downplay her actions. She took a bite of her cake. "Not true, you''ve been so nice to me ever since I got here. I feel that I need to thank you for all of that." Emily persisted as she thought of all the nice things Nicole had done to her since she joined Aludell. The early days in Aludell would had been so much harder if you weren''t here with me, Nicole. "Emily....it''s really no big deal, plus as the only two girls in Arudell, it only makes sense I do all of this. Us girls gotta stick together after all." Nicole said, still sounding embarrassed. "Oh, right, you were the only girl before I got here....was that hard?" Emily asked, feeling curious. "Well....it wasn''t all bad, but it did make me feel lonely a bit. I was hoping a girl would join Aludell, but sometimes I felt guilty for wishing such a thing as I''d be wishing on her to suffer the fate of being a witch." Nicole admitted her feelings, her voice tinged with a hint of sadness "Nicole...I..." Emily wanted to say something to make the conversation happy again, but she wasn''t sure what. "So, Emily, if you ever need to talk about anything, always feel free to approach me... even if it''s about a certain boy you loved that you lost." Nicole said, leaving Emily in stunned silence. "H-Huh?!" Emily gasped, caught off guard by Nicole. How did she know? "Nicole, how do you know about that?" Emily asked, a sense of vulnerability in her voice. "I saw the way you looked at Liam this past month, along with what you said to him the day you joined Aludell. I put two and two together... and I see I was sadly right on the mark." Nicole explained, her tone tinged with regret for steering the conversation toward such sensitive territory. "I-I see....." I suppose it would be possible for someone to figure that out, but still I''m shocked. "Don''t worry, though. I doubt any of the boys or even our own teacher figured out what it was, and I won''t be telling anyone." Nicole reassured Emily, offering a comforting smile. "T-Thank you. I suppose it would make sense for you to see through me, Nicole." Emily replied, the lingering unease gradually subsiding. "I do feel bad knowing so much about you while not telling you anything about me, though... I''ll tell you this, I''ve also lost the boy I love, just like you, so I know what you''re going through." Nicole admitted, which surprised Emily. "Nicole...." Emily spoke, her expression reflecting a mix of sadness and surprise. She wasn''t expecting Nicole to open up to her like this. Emily did want to learn more about the Aludell members, but this was just breaking her heart. So Nicole too lost someone just like I lost Jack, how sad... "W-Was the boy you love killed too? How did he die, if you don''t mind me asking." Emily inquired, the question hanging hesitantly in the air. Regret colored her face as soon as she uttered them, sensing the gravity of Nicole''s response. Nicole wore a sad smile, as if she were revisiting memories¡ªperhaps beautiful ones with the boy in question. "Yes, yes he was killed... though my case is different than yours." Nicole paused, the sadness lingering in her smile. Then, she continued with a heavy heart. "In my case, it was I, it was I who killed the boy I love." 1-2: A New Home, A New Family - Part 4 It is said Arlin, one of the sun gods, had a soft spot for rabbits due to him having had a pet rabbit once when he still walked among humans around 800 years ago, which is why rabbits tend to be seen as scared creatures in the scriptures of Arlinianism. Some might find that strange and even hard to believe. Would a god really have a pet? Would a god genuinely harbor affection for a creature so seemingly beneath his divine stature? My personal opinion that it''s not such a strange thing, as yet again, Arlin walked among us humans and treated us kindly, and we certainly weren''t equals with him. A paragraph from the book "Revelations of the Arlinite Faith Holy Text ", by Calen von Stomwisper.
Liam''s POV Shortly after Emily, Thandor, Nicole, and Karl departed for Amore, Liam and Jaxon found themselves in the training room. And though it''s called the training room, the room itself lacked any equipment. It had no swords, lances, or axes for someone to practice with, but what it had was space. It was a big, mostly empty room, perfect for someone to practice their magic in. "Liam, did you want to go with them to Amore?" Jaxon inquired, observing as Liam placed a bucket filled with water beside four others, each brimming with water. "Hmm, not really. It''s so awkward between Emily and I. I doubt she would have wanted me to go, and considering the reason they went to Amore in the first place is so she''ll get some fresh air, it made sense I stick behind this time." Liam explained as Jaxon looked at him, not looking impressed. "I''m not sure what her deal is, but Liam, I doubt being passive like this will make things any less awkward! I say talk to her. Keep talking to her until this awkward thing going on between you two goes away." Jaxon suggested, delivering his characteristic straightforward counsel. That is a VERY Jaxon idea alright... "You think that would help? It might just do the opposite if I was forceful, you know." Liam explained his point of view, which made Jaxon roll his eyes. "Fine, handle it however you want, but don''t act surprised if two or three months roll by, and she''s still the same towards you!" Jaxon retorted, his tone laced with annoyance. It would be very frustrating if that much time passes without anything changing. It''s not as if I''m a fan of having someone act so awkward around me. Maybe I should try to put a little more effort into talking to her. "Anyway, let''s start training, Jaxon." Liam suggested, hoping to shift the conversation away from Emily. "Alright, let''s start and be done before they return." Jaxon spoke as he started taking off all of his clothes, as they''ll only get in the way. Liam always wondered what people who don''t know anything about them or Aludell would think if they saw this scene. Would they think he and Jaxon are two lovers dying to embrace each other? Liam always found that funny, but he never told Jaxon as he knew it''ll make the boy explode. Liam loved to tease Jaxon, but not on this as some boundaries were best left untested. The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. "Are you ready, Liam?" Jaxon asked, having taken off everything but the long glove he wore on his left hand. "Oh, wait a second. I should take this off." Liam said suddenly, realizing he still wore the white lily necklace Nicole had given him. I can''t risk getting this damaged. Liam quickly put his necklace away and returned to Jaxon, who in turn took his glove off. There were burn marks all over it. There were some minors ones on the rest of Jaxon''s body, but his left hand was where the burn marks were the most. Liam remembers how shocked he was the first time he saw Jaxon''s body, but now he was used to the sight. What replaced shock in Liam was guilt as he knew some burn marks could have prevented if he had done a better job. "I''ll begin now." Jaxon spoke as he walked towards the center of the room. "Okay, I''m keeping an eye on you." Liam reassured, moving toward the buckets full of water. Jaxon started to summon flames from his left hand, a skill that always fascinated Liam. Unlike him, reliant on a water source to use his magic, Jaxon could conjure fire directly from his left hand. At first, Jaxon''s control seemed stable, albeit a bit shaky. Liam observed, intrigued by the raw power emanating from his friend''s fingertips. Jaxon tried to control the fire and keep it in the air in the middle, not touching anything. Jaxon managed to keep control the fire for few minutes as he moved it in the air. The room was starting to feel hot, and Liam was starting to feel sweaty. If it''s hot from where I''m standing, it must be even worst for Jaxon who is right under that fire. While Jaxon didn''t do bad at the start, fire is a wild thing. "Nghhh!" Jaxon let out, trying his best to keep his fire under control, but the stability was short-lived. Jaxon lost control, and the flames started creeping dangerously close to his body. Panic surged through Liam, prompting him to act swiftly. Channeling his magic, he manipulated the water in the buckets, sending cascades over Jaxon to extinguish the flames. Both Jaxon and the flames were drenched. "Are you okay, Jaxon?!" Liam called out as he rushed toward his friend, now sprawled on the ground, knocked down by the force of Liam''s water. Thank the heavens my aim with my power has become better, or I might have had been slightly late! "I-I''m fine!" Jaxon responded, a mix of anger and gratitude in his voice as water dripped from his wet hair. He was thankful for Liam''s intervention but frustrated with himself. "Will I never get to fully control this power??" he exclaimed, expressing his frustration. "Jaxon, you did your best. Teacher did say that it might be impossible for your power to be fully controlled." Liam offered, hoping to provide comfort, but it seemed to have the opposite effect. "That doesn''t make me feel better!" Jaxon snapped. "If that''s true, then either I''m never going to be able to fully use my powers, or I''m going to need you to be with me at all times if I needed to use it!" Jaxon sounded hurt, and Liam wasn''t sure what he could say to ease his friend''s distress. He knew how hard Jaxon trained and how badly he wanted to master his power. Liam knew Jaxon did not want to count on him. Liam wished there was more he could do. All I can do is watch you and use my power to save you when you need it, and even that I''m not perfect at. After a minute of heavy silence, the only sound in the room being water dripping from Jaxon''s hair on the group, Liam spoke up. "Well, I''m not going anywhere, Jaxon, so you have all the time you need to master using your fire powers. You might not believe me, but I really feel like you''ve improved since last month." "...Do you really think I improved?" Jaxon asked, doubting Liam''s words. "Yes, you have. If anyone would know, it would be me after all. I am the one always training with you here." Liam reassured his friend. "Hmph! I guess you having to use your power to save me every time does count as training for you!" Jaxon retorted, sounding annoyed but also wearing a genuine smile. "How rare, you usually only smile while talking to Nicole." Liam teased the younger boy, provoking a burst of anger. "Shut up!" Jaxon shouted. 1-2: A New Home, A New Family - Part 5 "When taking a look back at the history of our beloved Kingdom, it might be easy to forget that how it is now wasn''t how it was hundred of years ago. For example, the Duchy of Lowugrace to the southernmost of the Kingdom was once was domain of the Vuvaria Empire, before it fell and split into three Kingdoms around 300 years ago. In a pivotal moment, the ruling Duke of Lowugrace back then chose to align his territory with our kingdom, to become one with us, and that has remained the case since." A paragraph from the book "The Rich History of the Kingdom of Arixad", by Oliver Gaimley.
Emilio''s POV Emilio had traveled far and wide until he finally reached Farnworth, located at the southernmost of the Kingdom. Farnworth, perched on the edge of the kingdom and kissed by the sea breeze, held a charm unlike any other that Emilio has ever seen. The salty air greeted him, the rhythmic melody of waves serenading the coastal town. "Is that the sea?!" Emilio exclaimed, his eyes widening as he peered out of the carriage window, the vast expanse of the Mermaid Sea stretching before him¡ªan awe-inspiring sight he had never beheld. "Yes, it''s called the Mermaid sea. It borders our kingdom to the south and east of it." Celestia explained matter-of-factly, her interest seemingly distant from the enchanting seascape. "Mermaid sea? Why is it called that?" Emilio asked, feeling a little curious, his attention still on the sea though. "Silly legends, that''s all." Celestia answered, still not sounding interested. Emilio had been traveling with Celestia and Harold for a couple of days until they finally reached Farnworth. It was much farther away than he thought. Farnworth was a town of cobblestone streets and quaint houses adorned with colorful flowers. Fishing boats swayed gently in the harbor, a testament to the town''s reliance on the bounties of the sea. The suns dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow upon the town as Emilio absorbed the sights and sounds of this coastal haven. This was like nothing Emilio has seen before. It was all too overwhelming, but it also wasn''t lost on Emilio how all the townspeople were looking at the carriage wherever it went. It IS a fancy looking carriage, I suppose that makes it stand out. I hope Celestia''s house isn''t too far away from here.
Emilio ended up learning few shocking things when he reached Celestia''s house, which looked closer to how he''d imagine a castle to be in his mind. Celestia''s estate stood majestically against the backdrop of Farnworth. Tall, ivy-covered stone walls enclosed the expansive grounds, giving an aura of seclusion and privacy to the noble residence. The manor''s exterior was a harmonious blend of polished stone and ivy-covered walls, creating a visual symphony that spoke of both strength and grace. Stained glass windows, depicting scenes of historical significance and heraldic symbols, added a touch of color to the otherwise earth-toned exterior. And if that wasn''t surprising enough, he also found out Celestia wasn''t simply just wealthy. She was more than that. As Celestia was coming down from the carriage with Harold''s help, servants who worked at her estate approached her and greeted her. "Countess Celestia! We''re so happy you are back home from the capital safe and sound, milady." Countess?! Emilio gasped when he learned the truth, the truth that Celestia was nobility, and not just that, she was the Countess of Farnworth, the one in charge of this town which has taken Emilio''s breath away. All the servants turned to look at Emilio, confused at who could this boy possibly be. Harold quickly explained, though some still looked puzzled.
Emilio found himself guided by one of the servants, a boy around his age, into a modest chamber within the Sterling estate. Though the room was not overly spacious, it boasted two neatly arranged beds and a window that offered a glimpse of the estate''s surroundings. "This will be your room....well, OUR room to be more accurate." The boy said as he guided Emilio in. "Our room?" Emilio inquired, seeking clarification. "Indeed. I bunk here as well. We''re roommates now." the boy responded, still trying to reconcile Emilio''s sudden presence. Emilio noticed the boy still looked puzzled. Guess I can''t blame him. "My name is Alan. What''s yours?" The 14 years old boy called Alan introduced himself. He had short brown hair and brown eyes. "I''m Emilio. Sorry to come suddenly in like this." Emilio expressed, feeling a bit guilty about having to make Alan share his bedroom. "Emilio, huh? I''ve got a burning question for you. How did you cross paths with Lady Celestia?" Alan''s curiosity bubbled forth, etching intrigue on his features. Emilio hesitated, a shadow passing over his expression. "It''s not a tale I''m eager to recount, sorry." "Fair enough. Can you share anything else about yourself, aside from your name? This whole situation is throwing me off." Alan pressed on. "I can say this, I...didn''t have any place to go anymore, so Celestia said she''d give me a place." Emilio answered, sadness filling his voice and face, which made Alan feel a little guilty for pushing out information from the boy. "Oh... I see. And remember, it''s Lady Celestia. You can''t just call her by her name!" Alan interjected, attempting to shift the conversation''s focus. And that was the start of Emilio''s days as Celestia''s servant.
Two weeks passed by. Emilio''s life as a servant didn''t start out easy, as he had a lot of learning to do. He first had to learn where everything in the estate was, which wasn''t easy on him as he had never been inside a house so big before. The estate felt lie a maze to him. Sometimes Emilio was tasked with small errands, such as fetching items from the local market or delivering messages within the estate. He loved whenever he had the chance to go outside the estate and take a good look at Farnworth. He found it a very beautiful town. If only my family could have seen it... Other times Emilio found himself doing tasks such as cleaning or taking care of the horses. He nearly never found himself having free time, but he didn''t mind as it helped take his mind off of things he''d rather not remember or think about at the minute. Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. One thing Emilio soon realized was that he nearly never saw Celestia. He knew that as a Countess she must be busy, but he wasn''t expecting to nearly never see her like this. The two haven''t spoken ever since he arrived at Farnworth. I shouldn''t think about her for now. I mean, if there is anything I should be thinking about is what I should do from now o- "Emilio! I think you wiped that window clean enough already!" Alan shouted from behind Emilo, snapping him out of his thoughts. "Oh!" Caught off guard, Emilio halted his cleaning and turned to face an irritated Alan. "What''s on your mind anyway?" Alan asked, his expression a mix of curiosity and annoyance. "It''s nothing!" Emilio quickly answered. He was sure Alan knew he was lying. It''s not like I can tell him I had his Lady Celestia on my mind. "Whatever," Alan dismissed with a sigh. "I just came here to tell you that you''re needed in the garden. Now." "The garden? Right away?" Emilio inquired, intrigued by the sudden summons. "Yes, right away! Get going!" Alan snapped as Emilio started moving in a hurry towards the garden. He had no problem finding his way to the garden. The garden was a lush, vibrant oasis, with a variety of flowers, trimmed hedges, and meandering pathways. The fragrance of blooming flowers filled the air, and the distant sound of waves crashing against the shore added a serene backdrop. It was a beautiful place and Emilio loved whenever he had the chance to come here. When he got there, he found two knights who served house Sterling and older lady he had never seen before who looked to be at her late 50s. From the way she dressed Emilio could tell she was someone important. The older lady looked distressed as the two knights tried to calm her down. "Where is it?! Where?!" the lady wailed, her distress palpable as the knights attempted to console her. "M-Milady, please calm down!" one of the knights implored, his words falling on deaf ears amidst the lady''s anguish. "Where could it be? Let me go!" She screamed, trying to break free from the knights'' hold on her. What''s going on? Emilio was both puzzled and a little worried as he approached them. "Hey you! There you are!" One of the knights shouted at Emilio once he saw him. Emilio hurried towards them. "What''s happening? Who is-" Before Emilio could finish speaking, the other knight cut in. "She lost her ring somewhere here in the garden. Go help the other knights look for it as we try to calm her down!" The knight quickly explained. "A-Alright!" Emilio quickly answered as he wasted no time to start searching. I would have liked to know what the ring looks like, although I doubt many lost rings are lying around here in the garden. The garden, though a spectacle of beauty, presented a challenge with its abundance of foliage and scattered flowers. Emilio, undeterred, delicately sifted through leaves and petals, his focus unwavering. The distant rhythm of waves against the shore seemed to underscore the urgency of the task. He spotted a knight every now and then also searching the garden for the missing ring. It made him feel a little better knowing he wasn''t the only one searching. Just who is that lady though? I suppose that can wait for now. As Emilio scoured the garden, he marveled at its captivating allure even in the midst of an unexpected mission. The vibrant colors and intricate designs of the flowers, coupled with the neatly trimmed pathways, created a spellbinding tapestry. Yet, his concentration remained steadfast on the mission at hand. Observing the knights attempting to console the distraught lady, Emilio pressed on, determined to aid in the recovery of the precious ring. Suddenly, a glimmer of gold caught his eye nestled near a bed of roses. Carefully navigating the thorns, he retrieved a small, ornate ring, its golden surface glinting in the sunlight. Emilio had never touched something so expensive looking before. "I found it!" Emilio exclaimed, rushing back to the lady and the knights. The lady''s eyes widened with relief as she beheld the recovered ring. The knights stepped back, allowing her to embrace the precious item, a relic of cherished memories. "Oh, thank the heavens! I thought I had lost it forever! I can''t live without it!" the lady expressed, her distress transforming into joy. She didn''t even pay Emilio any attention. He wasn''t sure if she even realized he was standing there. "Lady Beatrice, it might be for the best we take you back to your room now." One of the kights suggested. "No! I don''t want too!" Beatrice objected, still holding onto the ring with all her might. "But-" "I said I don''t want too!" Should I say something? Should I leave them be? I''m not sure what I should be doing here. Suddenly, someone else stepped into the garden. Someone Emilio has wanted to see. "Mother, there you are." Celestia spoke as she slowly approached the group, looking calm. "I''ve heard you went out to get some fresh air." "Yes, I don''t wish to spend all day in my room." Beatrice said as she turned to look at her daughter. "Now have your knights here let go of me!" She snapped. Celestia remained silent for a moment before she spoke. "Mother, the doctor is here. How about you and I go on a stroll in town once he''s done checking up on you?" Celestia suggested, attempting to calm her mother. "I told you I''m feeling fine! I don''t want to see that doctor!" Beatrice screamed again. "Mother, please. If not for me, do it for father''s sake. He would want you to check up on your health." "...Your late father would want that, yes." Beatrice said, her voice carrying a hint of sadness as she glanced at the ring she held in her hand. "Alright, I''ll go see this doctor." She agreed, and the two knights escorted her away, leaving Celestia and Emilio alone. "I''m sorry I saw that, Ce-, Lady Celestia." Emilio corrected himself as he spoke. I feel like I was in the middle of something I shouldn''t had been part of. "There is no need to apologize. If anything, I should thank you. It seems it was you who found mother''s lost ring, right?" Celestia asked, smiling. Emilio had never seen her smile before, and he couldn''t help but think what a beautiful smile that was. "Yes, it was I. You already knew about that?" Emilio asked. "I was told mother lost her ring here in the garden, so I rushed over. I was sure she was causing trouble to the knights. I worried for them and her." The older woman explained. "....Is your mother alright?" Emilio asked, feeling a little hesitant to voice his question. "You said something about a doctor earlier." She''s..." Celestia hesitated, her lips parting before closing again; Emilio had never witnessed her at a loss for words. "She''s not well mentally, as I''m sure you''ve gathered. The loss of her husband, my father, was something she could never recover from." Celestia explained, sadness casting a shadow over her face. "I''m sorry for asking." Emilio apologized. "It''s fine. As someone who servers the Sterling family, you''d have figured this out sooner or later." "I see....Your mother is lucky, I can tell you care for her." Emilio said with a smile on his face. He hoped Celestia would smile back, but she didn''t. She instead turned her back and said "She''s the only family I have left. Here in this mansion anyway." Emilio wasn''t sure how to respond to that. He wasn''t expecting Celestia to tell him more about herself, though he supposed that was also something someone who servers the Sterling family will find out eventually, though he was still shocked. "I have to go now, though now that I found the chance to talk to you, I should ask you, how are you finding life here so far?" Celestia inquired, still keeping her back to Emilio. Pausing for a moment, Emilio considered his response. "I''m learning and experiencing a lot of new things. Most of the time, I''m very busy, but I don''t mind. I''m also enjoying getting to know the others." he answered honestly. "So you don''t regret coming here?" She asked another question, and this time Emilio didn''t need to pause before he responding. "No, I don''t regret it." " I see. I hope it stays that way." Celestia spoke in a somber tone as she started walking away, leaving Emilio alone in the garden.
That night, as Alan and Emilio called it a day, reclining on their beds, Emilio recounted the day''s events to Alan. "So you finally met Lady Beatrice. Had I known her ring was missing I''d have gone to the garden with you." Alan said, his voice carrying a hint of fatigue. "Alan, the way you said that makes it sound as if you know much more about Sterling family than I do." Emilio remarked, his tone also tinged with weariness. "Of course I do. This is my third year serving them." "....Is there anything else everyone knows about but me?" Emilio asked. "What''s sparking this sudden interest?" Alan responded with a counter-question. "Well, it doesn''t feel pleasant being kept in the dark about something that seems common knowledge to everyone else..." "There''s actually one thing I assume you''re not aware of, though I''m a bit torn about whether I should be the one to spill it or not..." Alan admitted, displaying a sense of internal conflict. "Alan, tell me!" Emilio urged. "Well....You see, Lady Celestia''s younger sister is Queen Tricia, wife of King Aricad II, meaning Lady Celestia is the King''s sister in law." ....Huh? 1-2: A New Home, A New Family - Part 6 Emily''s POV Two weeks passed by since Emily went out to Amore with the others. During this time, she has been outside the house and taken around the capital every now and then. This place was finally starting to feel like home to her now. One day, while she was engrossed in a book in the living room, Thanodr unexpectedly summoned her to the classroom. "Emily, there''s something I''d like to discuss with you." Thandor spoke, his tone serious but his warm smile putting Emily at ease. "I''m listening." "Emily, you see, it''s been a bit now since you joined Aludell, so I think now is the right time to bring this up." Thandor paused for a second before he continued. "About your magic..." Emily felt a sinking sensation in her heart. "I think you should start practicing with it. You control water, correct? Have you used your powers since they awakened?" Thanodr asked. "N-No, I haven''t used them. I didn''t even attempt it." Emily admitted, guilt and shame weighing on her. I knew a conversation like this might happen one day, but I was really hoping it wouldn''t... "Hmmm, I thought as much. I didn''t want to push you when you first joined Aludell, but Emily as a member of this group, it is very important you are able to control your powers. When his majesty the King gives us missions, we need to use said powers after all." Thandor explained. "Oh..." Emily responded, visibly uncomfortable. "I''m uncertain when our next mission will be, and I don''t anticipate you''ll be able to do much initially, considering how new you are to all of this. However, I do expect you to put more effort into practicing with your magic. Can you do that for me?" Thandor asked, a smile still gracing his face. He was being a bit forceful without coming across as demanding or imposing. "A-Alright, I''ll try to practice from now on. But how do I go about that?" Emily inquired. "I''m not sure if I''ll know how to use my magic." "Emily, every witch and their magic is different. As I don''t control water such as you, I fear I can''t help you much there. You''ll need to figure out how to use and learn to control your magic on your own." Thandor explained, which disappointed Emily. He noticed the concerned look on her face. "Emily, don''t worry about it. Start small. As you can control water, why not fill a bucket with water and see if you can control it or not? Just do a little of that everyday and I''m sure you''ll have better control of your magic by no time." Thandor said, hoping to encourage Emily.
I knew a conversation like that might happen one day, but I was really hoping it wouldn''t. I knew I couldn''t spend the rest of my days here ignoring the fact that I''m a....witch. Accepting herself as a witch was still a struggle for Emily. She preferred not to dwell on magic or the fact that she could control water. Part of her wished to pretend that this aspect of herself didn''t exist. Unprepared to embrace her identity as a witch, how was she supposed to start using her powers as one? Emily wasn''t sure, but she knew she shouldn''t let Thandor down after everything he had done for her. He saved her life after all. Thandor said something about filling a bucket with water and practicing...I wonder where I can find one? Emily went to the kitchen to search for said bucket, but it was to no avail. Suddenly, Nicole entered the kitchen, appearing surprised to find Emily there. "Oh, Emily! Do you need something?" Nicole inquired, noting that Emily seemed engrossed in something. "No, well, yes actually...I''m looking for a bucket. Do you know where I can find one?" Emily spoke, not sure how to explain herself. It has been two weeks since Nicole opened up to Emily at Amore. During the first few days after that day, Emily found it awkward to be around Nicole. She wasn''t sure what to do with what Nicole told her. Nicole on the other hand continued to treat her the same, being kind as always. A part of Emily harbored a curiosity to delve deeper into Nicole''s disclosure, to understand the meaning behind her statement about killing the boy she loves. However, every time Emily remembered the sorrowful expression on Nicole''s face that day in Amore, she opted not to broach the subject. Emily believed that if Nicole wanted to share more, she would. Whatever happened in Nicole''s past, Emily decided to go back to treating her the same way she did before. It also seemed like something other members of Aludell did not know about, so Emily felt touched in a way Nicole trusted her to tell her that. If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. "A...bucket? Why do you need one?" Nicole asked, her curiosity tinged with puzzlement. "You see...." Emily quickly explained how she wants to try and practice using her magic. "Ohhh, right. You do control water. That makes sense. I think all the buckets we have are in the training room right now." Nicole answered Emily''s earlier question. The training room...I suppose it''s about time I went in there. "Oh right, I was thinking of making Karl a small snack. Do you want some, Emily?" Nicole asked, remembering the reason she came into the kitchen in the first place. "N-No thank you! I really should practice using my magic for now." And with that, Emily left the kitchen and was now on her way to the training room.
Emily stood in front of the training room door, feeling hesitant to open it. Emily has now spent enough time in Aludell to realize how Nicole and Karl never really go in there, while Liam and Jaxon go almost everyday. Part of her always wondered why is that. Did that mean Nicole and Karl have complete control over their magic? Emily wasn''t sure, but she never asked as she did not want to talk about anything magic related. As she stood there in front of the door, she heard sounds from behind it. "Jaxon! Are you okay?!" Liam''s worried voice pierced through the door. Did something happen?! Emily quickly opened the door and ran in, feeling concerned. She wasn''t sure what to expect, but the sight that greeted her was nothing short of shocking. She found Liam kneeling beside a naked and wet Jaxon, the younger boy resembling someone who had been unceremoniously tossed into a river. Both boys turned to stare at Emily, clearly taken aback by her unexpected arrival. "W-What?!?" Emily gasped, shocked. She quickly turned her head the other direction, feeling embarrassed. She had never seen a boy naked before, and this was most certainty not how she imagined her first time seeing one would be. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!!?!" Jaxon snapped. Emily couldn''t see him now but she felt she could imagine his angry face in her mind. "I-I''m sorry! I heard shouting, and I thought something terrible had happened!!" Emily stammered, desperately attempting to justify her intrusion. "Oh, something wrong DID happen, and that was YOU COMING IN HERE!" Jaxon''s outburst conveyed a mix of anger and embarrassment. Wait, don''t tell me! Is this what I think it is?! I''ve always heard rumors back in Saalnia how there are boys who like other boys, but I always thought that was a silly legend! Do they actually exist?! How does that even work? I don''''t understand it at all! Meanwhile, Liam struggled to suppress his laughter, finding the situation more amusing than alarming. Once Jaxon was clothed, Emily finally dared to face him and Liam. "I''m...I''m sorry!" She apologized. Her face was as red as a tomato. More red than Nicole''s hair. "I don''t accept your apology!" Jaxon lashed out, his face also red, though from anger or embarrassment Emily wasn''t sure. "Jaxon, she didn''t know..." Liam interjected, attempting to pacify his friend. "I don''t care!" "I truly apologize....I didn''t know you two were close like that. I should have knocked..." Emily''s remorse was evident in her tone and expression. "Wait, what do you mean?" Jaxon asked, unsure what the girl meant by the way she worded things. "I mean....you two are lovers, right? I never thought I''d meet a boy who likes oth-" "HAHAHAHAHA!!" Liam erupted into laughter, while Jaxon''s rage intensified, somehow surpassing its previous level. "WHAT IN ARLIN''S NAME ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!!?!!?" Jaxon exploded. "....Oh, was that not it? You two aren''t....." "WE AREN''T!" Jaxon bellowed, his frustration reaching new heights. "Oh, I see....My bad." Emily let out, feeling stupid for jumping into conclusions. "Why would you even ASSUME such thing?!" Jaxon asked, though it sounded less like a question and more like him calling Emily stupid. "Well....you were naked, and Liam was so close to you so I thought he was going to kis-" "WE WERE TRAINING! IT''S NOTHING LIKE THAT!!" Jaxon lashed out, trying to explain the situation even in all the anger he felt. "Oh? I don''t understand..." Emily let out, not sure how Jaxon being naked had anything to do with training. Liam forced himself to stop laughing and looked at Emily. She made eye contact with him for a second and quickly looked back at Jaxon again. Even looking at Jaxon who is angry with her was easier than looking at Liam. "We should explain, Jaxon. It''s kind of our fault for never telling her." Liam said, his gaze fixed on his infuriated friend, who remained silent. "You see, Emily, Jaxon here controls fire. He can make fire appear out of his left hand. It''s a powerful ability, but it''s very hard to control, as fire is a wild thing. Jaxon still hasn''t mastered its control yet." Liam began to explain. So Jaxon can use fire magic? And he can summon fire from his left hand? T-That''s scary. Is that why he always wore a glove on his left hand? Wait a second, his body was... Emily didn''t pay much attention to it at first, from the embarrassment and all, but she remembered seeing what looked like burn marks on Jaxon''s body when she saw him naked for a second there. Were those burn marks from his magic? How awful. " The reason Jaxon takes off his clothes is so if things went wrong and somehow he got fire near his body, his clothes won''t catch fire. As for the reason I''m here....I''m here to make sure he doesn''t get burned basically." "You can do that?" Emily asked, not fully understanding the last part. "Yes. I can control water, just like you. If I ever saw Jaxon here or any part of the training room in jeopardy of getting burned, I quickly step in and help with my magic. It''s training for us both in a way. That must have been the reason behind the shouting you heard." Liam concluded his explanation. Wait, Liam can also control water? Just like I do? He has the face of Jack, the boy she loved. He is the same age as Emilio, her older brother. And he can control water, just like her. ... It frustrated Emily in ways she couldn''t explain, not even to herself. She knows he has done no wrong, but she couldn''t stand being around him at this moment. "I see...." Emily uttered, unwilling to delve further into the conversation. "Why were you near the training room anyway?" Jaxon asked, changing the subject. "I was looking for a bucket. I was hoping to practice using my magic." "Oh, sorry. I make use of all the buckets in the house while I''m training with Jaxon here. Unlike him, I can''t make water appear out of nothing, so I need a water source." Liam spoke, feeling a little guilty. "Can I borrow one?" Emily asked. I just want to take one and get away from here. Away from him. "Sure of course. Though considering we both can control water, do you want me to help you practice?" Liam offered. Emily had no idea how to respond. 1-2: A New Home, A New Family - Part 7 When it comes to the sun god, Arlin, it is without a doubt he loved humans. We are the second most loved creatures by him, only behind his older sister, Aurelia the sun goddess. Arlin loved his older sister above all else, both back when the two of them still walked among us, and now as the two of them watch over us from the sky as they shower us with warm sunlight. A paragraph from the book "Revelations of the Arlinite Faith Holy Text ", by Calen von Stomwisper.
Emily''s POV Emily hesitated, her thoughts conflicting. She had no idea how to respond to Liam''s suggestion. On one hand she knows she could really use Liam''s help, as he had much more experience controlling water. On the other hand, having him help her practice would mean spending time with him, which was the last thing she wanted at the minute. She knows she smart thing would be to accept his offer, but she couldn''t get her heart to agree, and yet with that said she didn''t have it in her heart to outright reject him either. "Are you...sure? Weren''t you just practicing with Jaxon? Aren''t you tired?" She asked, finding it hard to look him in the eye. She tried her hardest to sound normal. "Well....Not really. Jaxon spends far more energy in our training sessions." Liam answered as Jaxon glared at him. He then continued "It''s okay if you don''t want me to help you practice, Emily." Liam said, sensing the girl''s feelings. How do I respond to that? If I said yes, I don''t want your help, I''d come across as such a jerk, wouldn''t I? "N-No, it''s not that! I''d appreciate your help!" she blurted, her words escaping without forethought. Ugh, why did I agree?! It would look even worst if I said ''no never mind, I don''t want to practice with you'' now.... "I-I see, if you say so. Are you ready to start now?" Liam inquired, his tone gentle. "Hey, Liam! What if I still wanted to train?" Jaxon re-entered the conversation, displaying a hint of displeasure at the prospect of his training partner being stolen like this. "Jaxon, Emily needs the training more." Liam responded. Before Jaxon could respond back, Nicole made a cheerful entrance into the training room, blissfully unaware of the recent awkwardness. "There you all are! I''m whipping up some cookies for Karl. Anyone interested? Just checking to ensure I make enough for everyone." she chirped, her upbeat tone oblivious to the lingering tension. "I want some!" Jaxon exclaimed as he dashed with a smile towards Nicole. That Jaxon, he sure only smiles while he''s talking to Nicole...I bet he wouldn''t had been nearly as mad if it was her who saw him naked a minute ago! "What about you two?" Nicole now asked Emily and Liam. "No thanks. Not really big on sweets." Liam answered. "Though you already know that, Nicole." Liam continued with a hint of amusement in his voice. "I know, I know. Haha, I keep hoping one day you''ll give me a different answer." Nicole said as she let out a small laugh. Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit. "I...I''m not in the mood for any at the moment. Maybe next time Nicole." Emily also gave her answer. "Do you need help preparing them, Nicole?" Jaxon asked. "Hmmm, not really, though I wouldn''t mind a helping hand if you are willing to offer one." Nicole answered as she turned to look at Jaxon who was a little shorter than her. This was a small fact the younger boy wasn''t a fan of. "Sure! I don''t want to be here with these two anyway!" Jaxon spoke as he dashed out of the training room. "Haha...I feel like I missed something." Nicole let out an awkward laugh as she slowly walked behind Jaxon, leaving Liam and Emily alone in the training room.
"So are you ready to start, Emily?" Liam asked once again. "Y-Yes." She answered, her gaze avoiding his "Alright, wait here a second as I fill one of these buckets with water. I''ll be back in a minute." Liam spoke as he went, picked up an empty bucket, and left Emily alone in the training room. Act normal, Emily, act normal. It didn''t take long for Liam to fill a bucket and come back. The bucket was only half full. He led Emily a corner in the room. "It''s only half full cause I think it might be easier to control a smaller amount. At least I found it easier to control a smaller around when I started using my magic." Liam explained as Emily examined the bucket. "Oh, I see. So that''s how it works." "Emily, you controlled water when you awakened your power, right? Do you remember how you did it?" He asked. Emily''s heart ached. She tries not to think of that dark day. "Well....I wasn''t really myself back then, so no I can''t say I remember how." "I-I see. Okay then, I''ll explain how I control water. I''m assuming the way I do it will work the same way for you." Liam began explaining. "Let''s start simple. Try putting your hand above the bucket and imagine the water moving in your head." "O-Okay..." Emily did just as Liam said. She closed her eyes and tried to imagine the water moving. After a few seconds, she opened her eyes. "Oh...nothing happened." she said, feeling disappointed. "Don''t worry about it. It took me a while to get the hang of it. Keep trying." Liam said, trying to encourage Emily. Emily took a deep breath, trying to focus on the task at hand. She once extended her hand over the bucket, envisioning the water moving. Still, nothing happened. "Am I doing something wrong?" She asked, feeling slightly frustrated with herself. Some witch I am... "Um, maybe you should try concentrating more. Don''t give up." Liam suggested, still patient. For what felt like an hour, Emily continued trying to move the water. Suddenly, she felt something. Hastily, she opened her eyes and turned her gaze to the bucket. It seemed as if a droplet of water had fallen into it, creating delicate ripples. However, the true origin of those ripples was Emily herself. "Di-Did I do that?" She questioned, her uncertainty palpable. "It sure was! "You''ve already done well for your first day practicing!" Liam commended, a genuine smile spreading across his face. Emily could tell he was happy for her. "Great job!" He continued, a big smile on his face, a smile that looked just like Jack''s. Emily managed a weak smile in return. "I know this might not seem like much, but if you kept doing this everyday, you''ll become better and better at having control over water." Liam said, but his smile faded when he noticed Emily''s weak smile. After a minute of quiet, he spoke. "Are you....okay?" He asked. "Y-Yes, I''m sorry. I know I should be happy right now. I mean, a part of me is happy I managed to move the water even that little, but...." "Is it...me?" Liam finally addressed a question that had lingered in his thoughts for a while. "Did I do something wrong? I can tell you feel uncomfortable around me." So he noticed? I suppose I wasn''t doing the best job at hiding it. Stupid Emily. "I-It''s not you, You did no wrong Liam. It''s me. I just, it''s just that, when I look at you....I remember someone I used to know. You two look so alike." Emily tried to articulate her feelings, her voice trembling. "....You did say that the day you joined Aludell, if I remember correctly. Do we really look so similar?" Liam asked. "Yes, you do. If I didn''t know any better I...could have believed you were him. I''m sorry, I just....need space and time right now." Emily expressed, not sure how to word her feelings. "It''s okay, I understand. I''ll give you the space you need...." Liam replied, sounding and looking saddened. Emily felt guilty for taking away the smile he had a second ago. "Just know you can ask me anything related to controlling water, okay? And don''t forget to practice everyday." With those words, Liam exited the training room, leaving Emily alone with a heavy heart. 1-2: A New Home, A New Family - Part 8 Emilio''s POV It has been a month since Emilio came to Farnworth. One month since he became Celestia''s servant. Emilio stood, facing a fancy looking door in the Sterling estate. A palpable sense of hesitation was lingering within him, as he has never taken a step behind this door before. After a steadying breath, Emilio raised his hand and gently knocked, awaiting the summons that would grant him entry. "Come in." A voice spoke from behind the door. It belonged to none other than Celestia. Hearing her response, he opened the door and walked into her office. The door swung open, revealing a lavish and impeccably decorated office. Elegant furniture adorned the room, bathed in the warm sunlight streaming through a sizable window. The walls were adorned with intricate paintings and tapestries that spoke of wealth. A large mahogany desk took center stage, and behind it sat Celestia, engrossed in the task of signing various papers. "Emilio, what brings you here?" she inquired, setting aside the pen she had been using to sign the documents. There were what seemed like a mountain of papers on the desk. The amount shocked Emilio for a second. Does she have to read and go through all of that? I suppose being a Countess means you''ll be very busy... "I''ve brought you your coffee, Lady Celestia." Emilio announced as he slowly approached the Countess and placed the coffee cup on her desk. "I''ll be the one in charge of this for a while." "Hm? How so? What happened to Alan?" Celestia asked, curious what happened to her coffee boy. "Alan caught a fever, you see. He isn''t feeling well, so I''ll be taking on some of his duties until he gets better." Emilio explained. "I see. That''s considerate of you, though I assume you''ll more busy these upcoming days." Celestia spoke as she took a small sip out of her black coffee. "Nah, it''s nothing really, I''m used to this. Back in my village... I used to do all kinds of errands, both in it and outside of it. This is nothing." Emilio spoke in a soft voice, the memories of his life in Saalnia putting a smile on his face. Celestia stayed silent for a minute as her gaze turned too the large window. It had a beautiful view on the Mermaid sea. Emilio felt as if she had something on her mind. I''m sure she''s very busy. I wish there was something I could do to make her job easier, but I highly doubt someone in my spot can do much for someone like her. When you think about it, the fact I''m in the same room with someone who''s the King''s sister in law is nothing short of a miracle. It''s very hard to believe. "Milady, I don''t want to take more of your time. Is there anything else you need?" Emilio asked, prepared to exit the office. Celestia turned to him, her gaze meeting his. "No, nothing specific. I suppose you''ll be my coffee boy for a bit now, so I''ll be counting on you." Celestia remarked as her attention returned to the papers on her desk. Just as Emilio turned was about to leave the room, Celestia looked at his back and said. "And tell Alan I''m wishing him a quick recovery." "S-Sure!" Emilio quickly responded, getting caught off guard a bit. He closed the door behind him as he left.
Emilio went on with his day, handling his other duties around the Sterling estate. As he methodically mopped the floor, his attention was drawn to Harold, who stood near one of the many windows in the ornate hallway, fixated on something outside. "Hm? Good day, Harold." Emilio greeted the elderly man. "Why, good day to you too, young man. I see you''re working hard." Harold responded in his gentle voice. "What were you looking at?" Emilio asked the question he had on mind. "Well, why don''t you come next to me and see?" Harold offered, an offer which Emilio took. What Emilio saw from this window was the garden, and more importantly, the knights training in the said garden. Wow... The knights, clad in gleaming chest armor, moved with precision and purpose across the garden. Swords clashed, and the air resonated with the sounds of training. Some knights engaged in sparring matches, their movements swift and calculated. Others practiced defensive maneuvers, shields raised in unison as they formed a formidable line. The sun cast a golden glow on the scene, enhancing the disciplined elegance of the training. Emilio couldn''t help but be captivated by the display of martial prowess. Emilio could see one man giving the knights commands. He was the captain of the knights here who served the Sterling family, and his name was Grayson. Emilio had never spoken to him before, but he had always seen him around. "Oh wow!" Emilio exclaimed as he witnessed Grayson skillfully draw two swords. The 35 years old captain engaged in a sparring session with a fellow knight, effortlessly overpowering him. The defeated knight seemed insignificant in comparison to Grayson''s prowess. It always makes me feel at ease to know a man that strong is serving milady and keeping her safe." Harold remarked with pride evident in his voice. "Y-Yeah..." Emilio replied, captivated by the display. Keeping her safe? Emilio wondered if there were more to what Harold said, but seeing the knights like this distracted his mind from diving deeper into that. Emilio couldn''t help but remember his old dream as he watched these knights, the dream of once becoming a knight who served the king. "You sure seem captivated by them, Emilio." Harold pointed out what was obvious to him. "Haha, yeah. You see, I once had this silly dream. I was hoping one day I''ll get to become a knight who served his majesty the King. I thought I put that silly dream behind me, but looking at these knights might have awakened something in me." Emilio tried to explain himself as he continued to look at the knights training below in the garden. "I see. I suppose we are similar in that sense." "Huh?" Emilio turned to face the elderly man. "What do you mean?" "You see, in my younger days, I was a knight here who served the Sterling family. Being a knight was a dream of mine too." Harold revealed, reminiscing about days long gone. "Really? I had no idea." "Well, it''s not something many people know about. It was so long ago, nor was I a knight for long. You see, I wasn''t very skilled, and I got injured on the job one day. In the end I decided being a simple servant is the way for me. It was the best way I could serve this house." Harold shared his tale. His tone lacked bitterness, yet pride was absent as well. "I see. That must not have been easy." Emilio said, feeling bad for Harold. "It wasn''t, but it was what made me realize that the dream I had of being a knight wasn''t for me. I''d never had known that if I didn''t try becoming one, so in a way I don''t regret it. Which is also why I don''t think you should call your dream of being a knight silly, as you never know what might come out of it." "Harold..." Emilio wasn''t sure what to say. He wasn''t sure what to think. "I think I''ve taken enough of your time now, no? With poor Alan sick, you have even more duties to take care of." "Oh, right! I should go back to working! See you later, Harold!" Emilio spoke hurriedly, dashing back to his tasks. However, the conversation lingered in his mind throughout the rest of the day.
Later that night, as the moon hung high in the sky, Emilio prepared to retire for the day in his shared room with Alan. He began to change into his nightclothes, addressing Alan, who lay in bed battling a fever. "How are you feeling, Alan?" Emilio asked the sick boy as he took off his shirt. "Awful. I''ve been in bed all day. I don''t like it." Alan replied, wearied and drained. "Alan..." "How did I even catch this fever? Ugh." The sick boy complained. "I haven''t known you for long, Alan, but I''ve spent time enough with you to know you are very hard worker. You should take it easy every now and then, especially now as you''re sick. Don''t push yourself."Emilio advised, hoping his words would persuade Alan to be gentler on himself. "That''s easy for you to say, but for me I just feel like a total burden right now. What kind of servant am I if I can''t get out of the bed?" Alan responded, sounding more heartbroken than angry. "Alan, nobody think of you as a burden! In a matter of fact, many are worried about you. Lady Celestia even told me to tell you she wishes you a quick recovery." "She...did? Lady Celestia said that?" Alan asked, the mention of Lady Celestia seemed to bring a sense of calm over him. "Yes, she did. She was very busy too, but still found time to wish you well." "....She''s always busy, you know. She works far more than a woman should." Alan spoke in a hushed voice, slowly closing his eyes, succumbing to drowsiness. A small, content smile graced his face. I see even Alan has fallen for Lady Celestia''s spell. As Emilio settled into bed, his thoughts drifted to the earlier conversation with Harold. I wonder, should I bring that topic up with Lady Celestia tomorrow? After taking one last look at Alan to make sure he was sleeping safe and sound, Emilio closed his eyes.
The next day. Emilio found himself yet again standing, facing a fancy looking door in the Sterling estate. A palpable sense of hesitation was lingering within him, but for different reasons this time. After a steadying breath, Emilio raised his hand and gently knocked, awaiting the summons that would grant him entry. "Come in." Celestia spoke from behind the door. Hearing her response, he opened the door and walked into her office. "Good morning, Lady Celestia." Emilio greeted as he placed her black coffee on her desk. "Good morning to you too." Celestia responded, her eyes fixed on the letter in her hand. Sheesh, look at that mountain of papers! Does she needs to go through this every morning? It was then Emilio noticed Celetia wasn''t looking happy. "Is everything alright?" He asked, unsure if he should or not. "It''s nothing, just....an annoying visitor might be coming in few days." She replied as she placed the letter on her desk and took a sip out of her coffee cup. A visitor? Who could it be? Whoever it is, Lady Celestia doesn''t seem to be big on them... "That aside, how is Alan?" She inquired. "He still has that terrible fever. Harold said he''d summon a doctor to check up on him." Emilio answered, feeling a little concern for his friend. "I see. I assume it''ll be the same doctor who checks up on my mother. He''s a very talented doctor, so I know Alan will be in good hands." Celestia remarked as she looked at Emilio with her captivating hazel eyes. I feel like I could stare at those eyes forever. "I''m glad to hear that. And....." Emilio hesitated, unsure whether to voice his next thoughts. "Is something the matter?" Celestia asked. "Speak up." She commanded. "Lady Celestia, I''m not sure if it''ll be okay or not, but would it be possible to maybe join the knights who serve Sterling family?" Emilio finally asked. Celestia took another sip of her coffee before responding with a simple "Why?" "Well, you see, I''ve had this dream of once becoming a knight. I tried to put it behind me when I came here, but...watching those knights train is making it hard, so I thought I''d come and talk to you about it." Emilio tried to explain. He knew he sounded nervous and he did not like it. "A dream, huh? Emilio, I don''t want to get in the way of your dream, but when I brought your here, it was to become a servant, not a knight." "So it''s not possible?" Emilio asked, not looking forward to the answer. "It''s not that, it''s just being a servant and being a knight are two very different things. I can make you a servant anytime, but I can''t just make you a knight as simple as that. For starters, we''ll need sir Grayson to agree." Celestia clarified. Grayson? Oh, that''s the captain. "You know who Grayson is, right? He''s Captain of the knights who serve my family." Celestia explained. "Oh, yes. I do know of him. So we''ll need to get him to agree if I wish to be a knight here?" Emilio queried. "Yes. It might help if you know how to use a sword or some kind of weapon, but I assume you don''t, correct?" She asked. "....Correct." Emilio answered, feeling a bit of shame. This isn''t going to be easy, is it? Maybe I was over my head. "I''m sorry I bothered you with this, Lady Celestia." Emilio apologized, his guilt and shame apparent. "...You don''t need to apologize. I''ll give sir a Grayson a talk and see what he has to say, for the meantime continue your duties as a servant." Celestia said, which surprised Emilio. He did not think she''d do that. "R-Really? You will talk to him about it?" "Yes, but I can''t promise anything. Keep your expectations low." She cautioned as she started going over some of the papers on the desk. "Yes, milady!" 1-2: A New Home, A New Family - Part 9 - End Back in ancient times, when monsters still roamed the lands, it is said there were two valiant Knights who served the Vuvaria Empire back when it still stood. Their prowess in combat was unparalleled, a seamless collaboration that rendered them an indomitable force. Few adversaries, whether be it a human or a monster, could withstand the formidable duo when they fought in unison. They were meant to achieve great things, and their names were surely to go down in history, but a twist of fate had one of the two men die due to an unknown illness. Unable to live on without his dear friend, the other knight took his own life. And that''s the tale of the two knights who were unable to leave their names in history. A paragraph from the book "Myths and Legends of Our World, Year 858 Edition" by Archibald Thorne.
Liam''s POV Around the same time Emilio was talking to Celestia south of the Kingdom in Farnworth, Emilio was visiting the Arlin church he always went too located on Silverbreeze street in the capital, Arixalum. It has now been two months now since Emily joined Aludell, not that Liam wants to think of her at the minute. Arlin above, if you can hear me...Please, forgive my mother, for she has committed many sins... Liam knelt in silent reverence, his eyes closed, hands clasped together, the white lily necklace gifted by Nicole nestled between his palms. And also, about these thoughts I''ve been having about Nicole lately....These unholy thoughts... Liam knows that it''s normal for a guy his age to start desiring such things, and that he can''t help it, but he still didn''t like it. He has known Nicole for over half a year now, and this desire in him has not calmed down with time. Most of the time he can ignore it just fine, but some days, like today, it''s not easy. "Now hurry, you two! The good Father must have already started his lesson!" A woman''s voice pierced through Liam''s introspection. She beckoned to her two sons, who scampered towards a room in the church. They ARE a bit late. I brought Karl sometime ago now. Completing his prayers, Liam rose and settled onto one of the wooden pews in the church. Observing his concluded devotions, Sister Elara gracefully approached him. Sister Elara, adorned in a resplendent ensemble of yellow and white, embodied the sacred hues associated with the revered Sun God Arlin and the symbolic white lily. The golden-yellow fabric gracefully adorned her form. A flowing white veil cascaded down from her head, symbolizing purity and grace. Yellow and white, those were the colors of the outfits of the clergy. "Done with your prayers for the day? You sure are here early today." Sister Elara spoke with a gentle voice. "Oh, good morning Sister Elara." Liam greeted. "I''m here early today because I brought Karl to attend Father John''s lesson." Liam explained. Every Sunday, Father John holds a lesson to teach kids about Arlin and the faith. It''s free, so anyone can have their child attend. "Oh, I see! I think I''ve seen you with a little boy here before. So that must have been Karl." Sister Elara remarked as she recalled their previous encounters. Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. "Yup, that was him." "Is he your younger brother?" she asked, a question Liam hoped she wouldn''t pose. Karl and I don''t really look alike, so I can''t answer with yes. I hate lying, but I can''t be truthful here. "He''s my....cousin. He''s staying with me and my family for a while." Liam lied, trying to sound nonchalant. He felt guilty but maintained a composed demeanor. "I see. You sure bring him to church often." Sister Elara commented, oblivious to Liam''s deception. "Yes, I want him to learn more about Arlin and the faith." Liam spoke, this time it was the truth. He truly wanted Karl to learn more about Arlin, and would take him to attend Father John''s lessons whenever he could. Sometimes Liam thought it was silly to make Karl, who is also a witch, learn more about Arlinianism, but he thought it would still be better if Karl was better educated regardless. "How kind of you. There really isn''t many boys your age who are as pious as you. You should be an example to them." Sister Elara spoke with a smile, and while Liam was sure she meant well, he still put on a fake smile when she said that. That''s not true...I''m not a good example. I''m lustful, I''m a witch, not to mention... "Sister Elara, can you come here for a second?" Another Sister called out. "Oh, coming! I must take my leave now. Take care." Sister Elara spoke as she hurried towards the Sister who had called her. "Y-You too!" Liam said back.
After some time, Father John''s lesson was over, and the kids left the room where it was taking place. Karl, along with other kids, came out of the door. Karl ran towards where Liam was waiting for him. "So how was the lesson?" Liam inquired. "It was okay." Was Karl''s response. Not much of a talker, this one. "Hm? Did you not have fun?" Liam asked another question, hoping to make Karl talk more. "Well, I learned some things, but I wouldn''t describe them as fun... They were more complicated." Karl explained, prompting a restrained chuckle from Liam. "Haha, alright. So, what do you say we head back home now?" Liam suggested as he rose from the wooden pew. Children scattered around, either running towards their waiting parents or departing for home on their own. "Okay." Was again all what Karl said. Liam took Karl''s hand, and together they made their way towards the exit. Before reaching it, however, the church door swung open, revealing Nicole, who seemed to be in a hurry. Her eyes immediately found Liam and Karl, and she hastened toward them. "Nicole? What are you doing here?" Liam asked. "There you two are!" Nicole exclaimed, breathless as if she had rushed to get there. "Did something happen?" Liam asked, a hint of nervousness in his tone. "Well, no, but actually yes, I mean..." Nicole paused for a moment to catch her breath before continuing. "Our teacher has a mission for us." "A mission? It has been a while." Liam spoke, a surprised look on his face. "Yes, but he needs all of us present before he explains what the mission is. So come on, let''s go home!" Nicole declared as she seized Liam by the hand, pulling him along behind her.
When they left the church, the trio ran into Vincent Caldwell, one of the knights in charge of keeping an eye on the Aludell members. He was waiting outside the church for them, and he did not look happy. I see, it must have been him who came along with Nicole here. Vincent walked towards them, glaring daggers at Liam. "How many times must we tell you not to sneak out?!" Vincent lashed out. "Oh, come on. You know I''d be at the church. I wasn''t planning on running away." Liam tried to explain as he rolled his eyes. Here we go again... "As IF I trust any word that comes out of that mouth of yours! Do you enjoy breaking the rules?!" Vincent shouted, attempting to contain his anger but failing. "No, it''s just that by the time you''d get ready to take Karl and I to the church, Father John''s lesson would had been over, so.....it made more sense for us to leave on our own." Liam explained himself. "Hmph! Excuses! Not that it matters what you have to say for yourself, if you continue leaving without having a knight to keep an eye on you like this, you will face the consequences!" Vincent declared, glaring at Liam. Oh boy, I really made him angry this time. I should try not to push my luck for a while. "Um, can we please have this conversation later? We need to go back home, for the mission and all...." Nicole interjected, looking and sounding nervous. "...Alright. Sure, let''s go. Start moving, you three." Vincent said as he scrutinized the group of witches in front of him. "Let''s go." Liam said as he, with Karl''s hand still in his, and Nicole began heading home. A mission, huh? I wonder what it is this time. Chapter 2: A New Home, A New Family - End 1-3: The Blood Knight and the Dancer - Part 1 "Hey hey, did you hear?" Whispered one of the maids. "Is it about his Majesty the King?" Asked the other maid. "Yes! Rumor has it the King''s set to remarry this year." "Really?! After all these years?! To who?!" "Shhhh! Keep your voice down! From what I heard, it''s a woman from a small noble house with not much to its name. Not sure why King Aricad wants to marry her." "Hmmm, how strange. Is she a beauty?" "Not sure, but she is 18 years old. His Majesty is over twice her age!" "That is a 21 years age gap. Though I suppose it doesn''t matter, as there is no way she''ll live up to the name of the late Queen Genevieve." "You''re right, I can''t believe it''s already been 8 years since she passed away while giving birth to Prince Elliot....She and King Aricad looked so good together. Whoever our new Queen ends up being, she''ll never be at her level." A gossip between two maids in the royal palace two years ago.
Queen Tricia von Regnaris''s POV Tricia von Regnaris, the Queen...Tricia von Regnaris, the Queen. That is who I am now. That is who I''m expected to be today. Tricia thought to herself as a maid brushed her chestnut brown hair, while another maid was deciding on a proper dress for today''s event. It was going to be a draining day, and Tricia wasn''t looking forward to it, but she couldn''t complain, and it was for two reasons. Firstly, as a Queen, maintaining an unblemished public image was imperative. The second, and this was the more important reason, was that Tricia didn''t trust that whatever she says won''t be taken out of context and taken around the castle, reaching the ears of people she would rather not hear what she had to say. She knows the number of people she could trust to say anything around was very limited. "You have beautiful hair, Your Majesty!" complimented Sophie, gently brushing Tricia''s hair. In response, Tricia offered a gracious smile to the 17 years old maid . "Thank you, Sophie." Sophie smiled back. She was one of the nicer maids here in the castle, and Tricia didn''t mind having her around. Something Tricia didn''t feel towards most of the maids in the castle. Queen Tricia took a glance at her own reflection on the mirror. She remembered the days when her mother, Lady Beatrice, would brush her hair like this when she was still a little girl. Those days are long gone now, but I miss them. Life was so much simpler when I still lived with my family, when I sill had my older sister on my side. I suppose it is a little silly to look back at what can''t come back, but for me it is still better than looking at what is to come. After some time, Tricia''s gown was decided. Tricia''s gown was a resplendent ensemble in a shade that gracefully blended pastel lavender and silver. The delicate balance of these hues created a gown that shimmered in the light. The lavender undertones accentuated Tricia''s hazel eyes and complemented the chestnut brown tones of her hair, creating a regal and harmonious overall appearance, while her hair flowed down her shoulders in soft waves. She was nearly done, but there were one thing left to be done. The crown. Tricia walked towards the ornate chest that held the royal regalia. She carefully lifted the golden crown, adorned with intricate filigree and precious gemstones. As she held it in her hands, the weight of responsibility pressed upon her. Slowly, with measured grace, she placed the crown on her head. She took one last look at herself in the mirror. When I woke up, I looked like Tricia Sterling, but now? I look like the Queen, as I should look like.
In a large room in the royal castle, located in Arixalum the capital, a gathering of noble ladies awaited a certain someone''s arrival. Suddenly, the grand door swung open by a guard, ushering in the anticipated presence. "Your majesty!" "Good morning, Queen Tricia!" While not all, most of the noble ladies approached Queen Tricia the moment she stepped in through the door. "Good morning to you all. I apologize for making you wait." Queen Tricia greeted back, a small smile on her face. She took a look at the smiles these noble ladies around her had, and she did not trust any of them. Before I was a Queen, I doubt most of these women will had smiled at me like this. I shouldn''t take their kindness to me at face value, as after all I truly do not think they would had given me the time of the day if I wasn''t the Queen. Tricia took a glance at some of the women who had not approached, a certain Duchess to be more specific, who did not look so impressed. At least there is one person in this room who does not pretend to be a fan of mine. Today marked the gathering of esteemed women from high-ranking noble families in the Kingdom of Arixad, converging at the royal palace, provided their schedules allowed. While attendance wasn''t obligatory, this monthly affair drew considerable effort from many, driven by the Queen''s consistent presence as the gracious host. Rooted in the cultural of Arixad, this event served as a notable occasion for these noblewomen to convene and exchange pleasantries with each other, not to mention it gives them the chance to meet and speak too the Queen, wife of the King. It was the highest position a woman could ever hope to achieve here in the Kingdom. Even if busy, most women still tried their hardest to attend. Sometimes Queen Tricia wished this wasn''t the case, she''s rather there be a smaller number of people. This novel''s true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there. The gathering unfolded as the women gracefully settled into their chairs encircling a polished round table, a symphony of whispered conversations blending with the delicate clinking of tea cups and the arrival of sweet confections served by diligent maids and servants. "Your Majesty, have you heard the recent news about..." "Your Majesty, I''m sure you''re aware of the recent developments regarding..." "And then, if you can believe it..." The air was alive with the buzz of various discussions, some involving Queen Tricia directly, while others weaved through the tapestry of courtly chatter. Queen Tricia tried her best to keep up with all of it. It was then she noticed someone was missing. "Ah, where might Duchess Cristie be?" she inquired, her gaze sweeping the room. She usually always attends these gathering, though I''m not complaining she didn''t show up. I did not want to see her face. Don''t need more people giving me fake warm smiles in here, not to mention word have reached me of what hard time her husband is giving my sister. "Ah, did you not hear your Majesty? Duchess Cristie is originally from the Kingdom of Storith to the west, as I''m sure you know. The recent events there have made her very worried about her family over there. She regretfully informed me that she won''t be able to attend this month." Conveyed one of the noblewomen representing a house situated in the southern reaches of the Kingdom. "I see. That must be hard for her." Queen Tricia said. She tried not to show any emotion in her voice, nor on her face. Duchess Cristie von Serpentbane is married to Alaric von Serpentbane, the Duke of Lowugrace to the south of the Kingdom. He is the Duke which the Sterling family is a vassal too. Queen Tricia still remembers how that family looked down on her and her sister, who had become a Countess, for being from a small minor noble house. The abrupt shift in Cristie''s behavior, from disdain to apparent respect, upon Tricia becoming Queen remains a source of annoyance for her, as she knows without a shadow of a doubt it''s fake. After few minutes, everyone, while still in the same room, were going here and there to have their own private conversations with one another. Most still spent their time around the Queen, wanting her attention. Queen Tricia always found this overwhelming, and while she wished she could tell them to leave her alone for a minute, she knew doing something like that would cause a disaster as it would come across as rude. I suppose it IS rude, but I''m at my limit here. One thing was for certain, Queen Tricia did not expect Duchess Renna to come her rescue. This was the same Duchess not looking impressed when Queen Tricia walked into the room. She is the wife of the Duke of Willowmere located to the west of the Kingdom, neighboring the Kingdom of Storith. "Excuse me, ladies, can I have a little private talk with the Queen?" Duchess Renna asked politely, a smile on her face. The noblewomen did not look happy, but none of them had a higher rank than the Duchess, so they couldn''t really refuse her. "S-Sure." They said as they stood up and left Queen Tricia alone with the Duchess. Does she need something? Not that I''m complaining, I needed to have a space from that crowd. "My Queen, how are you feeling? You didn''t eat any of the cake." Duchess Renna observed. Ah, starting with small talk I see... "I''m feeling fine, thank you. Just not in the mood for sweets today. How are you? How are the kids?" Queen Tricia responded, attempting to steer the conversation. "We''re all fine, thank you. Speaking of kids.....that is the topic I wanted to bring up with you." "Oh?" Tricia let out, not expecting this turn. "Some unkind rumors are being spread about you, and I thought you should know." Duchess Renna spoke in a quiet voice, ensuring no one would overhear. Tricia could feel her heart drop. Please...Please don''t let this be about what I think it is. Were we caught? Did someone spot us? "What are.....the rumors?" Queen Tricia asked, doing her best to sound composed "Your Majesty, it has been two years now since you married King Aricad II, and yet you are still to give birth to a child....some are saying you are infertile." Duchess Renna whispered. It was shocking to hear, but it let Tricia sigh in relief. Thank goodness it was something else after all. Of course, Queen Tricia couldn''t express her relief about the subject of the rumors, so she feigned a bit of surprise. "R-Really?" She let out. "Yes, I won''t lie to you, your Majesty. I know the King is much older than you, so you may not find him very attractive, but you should still do your duty as a Queen and give birth to his child." Duchess Renna went on, sounding as serious as ever. "Oh, it''s not like that at all. We just... haven''t been fortunate enough to be blessed with a child yet." Tricia said, gently correcting Renna''s assumption. I find the King many things, though unattractive isn''t one of them. Also, the fact she talked to me about doing my ''duty'' like that...She really doesn''t see me as a Queen, does she? "I see. Well, don''t give up. It took my husband and I a while to be blessed with a child too." Duchess Renna said she took a sip of her cup of tea. "Thanks for letting me know about these rumors," Queen Tricia expressed her gratitude before shifting the focus. "Your husband... The Duke of Willowmere, he''s a few years younger than you, isn''t he?" Tricia asked, a question she already knew the answer to. She just wanted to steer the conversation away from herself. "Yes, that is correct." Duchess Renna affirmed, her voice carrying a hint of satisfaction. "I know it''s not the typical experience for women in our position, but I consider myself fortunate to have a younger husband." She paused, a flicker of reminiscence crossing her features. She was in her mid 30s now, but she had married the now Duke of Willowmere back when she was still in her mid 20s. Ha, if only you know. If only you know. The Duchess wasn''t wrong that the experience of being with a younger man was one very few noblewomen ever got to have. While most did not have the large age gap Tricia had in her own marriage, most of them still were younger than their husbands. It was just how things are, or at least to most, but not all.
After the gathering was finally over, Queen Tricia started heading to her room alone. I''m exhausted. Those women sure talk a lot. The tired Queen simply wanted to go to her room and call it a day. When she opened the door and walked in, she found someone waiting for her. The dim light from the flickering candles cast a soft glow across the chamber, illuminating the figure waiting within. The 16 years old young man stood tall and lean. His short blond hair, neatly styled, framed a chiseled jawline, giving him an air of rugged charm. His piercing green eyes, vibrant against his fair complexion, seemed to hold a depth of understanding and a hint of mischief. "Prince Apollo, what are you doing here?" The Queen inquired, a warm smile playing on her lips. Before her stood Prince Apollo, the designated heir to the throne, destined to ascend as King Apollo II in the future. "What am I doing here? Do you really need to ask? I''ve come to see you, of course." the Prince replied, a playful grin lighting up his features. "Oh really? Did you miss me?" Queen Tricia spoke as she walked towards the chest where she places the crown and put hers in it. "A little, though I''m sure you missed me more, especially after spending most of the day with those noblewomen. I just knew I had to pay you a visit to cheer you up, your Majesty." Prince Apollo spoke, sounding playful. Queen Tricia approached him with a smile on her face. "Someone is very sure of himself. Your Highness, I have other ways I can cheer up myself which don''t involve you." "Oh really? Would you rather do something else than spend time with me right now?" Prince Apollo asked, though he already knew the answer. "No." Queen Tricia simply answered as she embraced him. "You really are a wicked woman." He spoke before he kissed her on the lips.
After some time, they were both now naked in the bed. "So? Have you told anyone you''re pregnant yet?" Prince Apollo asked, a smile on his face. To most this would seem like a warm, kind smile, but Tricia could discern the twisted emotions lurking behind it. "No, not yet. I''m waiting for the right time to announce the news." Tricia responded as Prince Apollo played with her hair. "I can''t wait. That man will think its his child growing inside of you. What a laugh." Prince Apollo continued, his smile seeming more twisted by the second. "You really hate your father, don''t you, Apollo?" "Ha!...That I do. From the bottom of my heart." "I suppose that makes two of us." Tricia said as she closed her eyes and put her head on Apollo''s chest. It wasn''t love that brought us together, it was the hatred of the same man. I know this ''love'' we share will only end in a tragedy, but I don''t care. I''d rather be with someone who pretends to love me over someone who doesn''t. I suppose I really am one wicked woman. 1-3: The Blood Knight and the Dancer - Part 2 Emily''s POV Ever since that day with Liam in the training room, Emily has spent everyday trying to practice with her magic. She hasn''t improved much since then, but she did feel like she could feel the water in her mind a little better now though. It was almost if someone was holding a sword, but was unable to to carry it off the ground and swing it around. That was how Emily felt with water when she tried to control it. It was in her grasp, but she was unable to do anything with it. She hoped she''d have the time to improve more, but fate had other things in store for her as she would find out. She found herself waiting in the living room with Jaxon and Thandor for the others to arrive. A mission. What could it be? I''m as nervous as I am curious about it. Emily took a glance at Thandor, who said he''d explain what the mission was once every member of Aludell was present. I doubt teacher will tell me anything, even if I asked really really nicely. I suppose all I can do is wait for Nicole to get Liam and Karl from the church. Turning her attention to Jaxon, who exuded his usual annoyance, Emily mustered the courage to voice her question. "W-What do you think the mission is going to be, Jaxon?" Emily asked the boy sitting next to her, almost too nervous to voice her question. "I don''t know. All I know is our teacher SURE loves keeping us hanging." Jaxon responded, rolling his eyes in characteristic fashion. "Now now, Jaxon. I''d rather explain the mission while everyone is here, as that way I won''t have to explain it twice." Thandor chimed in with a smile, eliciting another eye roll from Jaxon. "Aren''t you nervous, Jaxon?" Emily asked, hoping the boy can relate to what she''s feeling right now. "Not really. It has been a while since we had a mission, and I''ve been wanting to go out there and prove myself." Jaxon answered honestly. "Oh." I see. I suppose that makes sense. Maybe this says a lot about me. I mean, I am a member of Aludell, so I should think the same way as Jaxon here, right? And yet when I had heard we''re going to have a mission, all I felt was dread. And then suddenly, Nicole walked into the room with Liam and Karl, who were followed by two knights right behind them. The first was Gareth Stonehelm, Durthon''s nephew. An 18 year old knight. Emily observed his deep ebony hair, reminiscent of his uncle''s, and noted the discerning gaze he cast, particularly directed towards Thandor. It seems he keeps an eye on Thandor far more than he does on the rest of the Aludell members. The second knight was Vincent Caldwell, who happened to be 19 years old. He did not look happy as he walked into the Aludell home. His hair, a shade of raven black, is meticulously groomed, framing a face chiseled with the solemnity of his responsibilities. His piercing eyes, a deep and intense shade of steel gray. Emily knew of these knights, she knew it was their job to keep an eye out on Aludell members, to make sure they don''t pull anything funny. She however had never engaged in conversation with them, and truth be told, she preferred to keep it that way; the knights made her nervous. "There you all are!" Thandor greeted with a smile, not paying any attention to the two knights in the room. "Sorry it took us so long!" Nicole expressed. "Is it true? There is a mission?" Liam asked, curiosity painted on his face. A face Emily tried her hardest not to look at, though sometimes it was hard. "Yes, that''s right. A mission from his Majesty the King no less." Thandor answered, sounding serious this time. A mission from the King himself....I feel like my mind still hasn''t wrapped itself around that. To think someone that important is giving someone like me a mission is hard to comprehend.
After all the Aludell members took a seat in the living room, all staring at their teacher, Thandor, he finally began explaining. "The mission entrusted to us by his Majesty King Aricad II is thus; there is a very disturbing rumor spreading in the west of the Kingdom, in the Duchy of Willowmere territory to be more specific." Thandor began, all the Aludell members, plus the two knights were giving him their full attention. "Since the start of the past month, a series of chilling murders has unfolded within the duchy. Travelers, unfortunate souls, were discovered brutally slain, their bodies mutilated beyond recognition. What makes this particularly alarming is that the killer spared neither women nor children. What''s more, the murders seem devoid of any discernible motive. No valuables were taken from the victims as far as we know, and there appears to be no common thread connecting the victims." Oh no, how awful... Both Emily and Nicole looked disturbed and shocked by the gruesome news, but that didn''t stop Thandor from continuing. "Just who could this killer be? Is it one person, or a group of sick-minded individuals? This is where the rumor comes in. There have been a few witnesses who swear on Arlin''s name that they saw a knight, his armor covered in so much blood, around the scenes where some of the crimes took place. Of course, they have no way to prove what they saw. There is a possibility they might be lying, or that whatever they saw had nothing to do with the murders that took place." "A knight..." Vincent muttered thoughtfully, clearly absorbed in contemplation. "This is where we come in. Our mission is to investigate this rumor and this blood knight of ours, in hopes of finding an answer to the murders. And while our mission is NOT to capture that blood knight, if he really is out there, it would still be welcomed." "Are we sure it''s a knight?" Liam asked, his tone serious. "We really don''t know. It could be someone posing as a knight, and that again if they really are out there and not just a rumor that was made up for whatever reason." Thandor replied before continuing. "Regardless, a civil war might break out any minute now in the Kingdom of Storith to the west of us. Having a person, be it a knight or not, going around killing people in the Duchy neighboring Storith is one of the last things we need right now." "A.... Civil war?" Emily asked. She had no idea about any of this. Thandor turned to look at her with a smile. The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. "Haha, I suppose you wouldn''t know about it. There are two factions in the Kingdom of Storith right now, one who favors the King and one who favors his brother and wants him on the throne instead. " Thandor quickly explained. "The events there have nothing to do with our mission, but they are a reason why solving this mystery as fast as possible is important. Our full attention as Kingdom should be on Storith right now. We can''t have this blood knight take any of that attention away " This was starting to quickly become too much and overwhelm Emily. The idea of Kings, civil wars, factions, and all of that was too much for a girl like her who grew up in a small village. "But just how are we suppose to find this knight or clues about him anyway?" Asked Jaxon as Liam nodded, who also seemed to have the same question in mind. "About that, for this mission, you''ll start by heading to the town closest to where the last murder occurred." Thandor responded. "Around there is also where someone claims to have seen a blood knight, making it a good place to start the investigation. The town is called Gekra." "So, to be clear, our mission is to investigate the rumor and see what we can find out about this rumored blood knight, right?" Liam sought clarification. "That is correct, yes. Capturing would be nice as well if possible, of course, but our main goal at the end of the day is to gather as much information about him as possible." "And who will be going on this mission, teacher?" Nicole asked this time, her face looking pale. Jaxon was looking at her with concern on his face. "Glad you asked, Nicole. Don''t worry, neither you or I will be going. " Thandor reassured. "Neither Karl or Emily have went on a mission yet, so they should go to experience what a mission is like. I''d like for Jaxon and Liam to go as well just in case a some sort of fight were to happen, though of course I pray it won''t come down to that." "If you''re not going, Thandor, then I suppose it will be Vincent going along with Aludell on this mission." Gareth finally spoke as he stared at his fellow knight. "Wait, not all of us are going?" Emily asked, a little surprised by what she was hearing. I had assumed all of us will tackle this mission together. Is that not the case? "Sadly no. Rules have it only 4 of us can go at a mission at a time. Well, it was 3 before you joined, Emily. The rule is in place as some, like our lovely knight here, think it would cause too much problem too have so many witches out at once, while also making it hard to keep an eye out on all of them." Thandor spoke as he gave a fake smile to Gareth and Vincent, who rolled their eyes. "And it''s a pretty good rule if you ask me! You witches can''t be trusted!" Vincent lashed out, but he wasn''t finished. "And about this mission''s team, I can''t say I approve!" He said, pointing at Emily. "Oh? Why not?" Thandor asked. "That kid Karl could be useful with his magic, but her? Does she even know how to control her magic yet? What good will she be on the mission? This girl will just slow us down." Vincent spoke as he judged Emily, who looked sad, but she knew she couldn''t really deny what he was saying. It''s true....I can''t really control my magic yet. I doubt I''d be useful. His words hurt, but are they wrong? Won''t I just get in the way? "Hey! Don''t speak about her like that!" Liam''s retort surprised Emily; she hadn''t expected him to come to her defense. "Now now, calm down Liam. And Vincent? As the leader of Aludell, it is up to me to decide the teams. Karl and Emily both need the experience. The reason I''m not going is that I''m confident Liam and Jaxon can handle any unexpected challenges that might arise in this mission. Your opinion on the team does not matter, I fear." Thandor asserted, his tone unwavering despite the tension in the room. Vincent did not look happy, but he kept his mouth shut.
As the night fell, Emily prepared for bed early, anticipating the early morning departure for Gekra alongside Liam, Jaxon, Karl, and Vincent. The nervous energy was palpable, leaving Emily doubtful of a restful night. I''m so nervous, I wonder if I''ll get any sleep. The door creaked open, and Nicole entered, clutching an unfamiliar leather object in her hand. Her emerald eyes shimmered in the soft candlelight of the room as she inquired, "Emily, are you going to bed?" "Y-Yes. I doubt I''ll manage to sleep that much, I''m so nervous, Nicole." Emily admitted, prompting Nicole to envelop her in a comforting embrace. "That''s normal, I was also pretty scared on my first mission too, but Liam, Jaxon, and our teacher kept me safe. It was just the four of us back then, I had just joined Aludell, and had no idea what I was in for. You''ll be fine, don''t worry, I promise." Nicole reassured her with a gentle tone, alleviating some of Emily''s concerns. "I wish you were coming along with us too, Nicole." Emily expressed as she embraced Nicole back. "I feel like I''ll have no one to talk too if you and teacher aren''t there with me." Things between Liam and I have been even more awkward since our last conversation two weeks ago. I don''t feel like Jaxon likes me, especially since what happened also two weeks ago. Karl is...not much for conversations. He isn''t a bad kid, I just don''t know what to say to him most of the time. And lastly, Vincent is a knight. I don''t want to talk to him. "I see. You should maybe use this mission as a chance to get closer to people. I know that won''t be easy, but why not try?" Nicole suggested, releasing Emily from their embrace and looking her in the eyes. "You...think I can do that?" Emily asked, her uncertainty evident. "You never know if you don''t try." She''s not wrong, but..... "Also, I''ve wanted to give you this." Nicole said as she handed Emily the leather item. "W-What''s this? Wait, is there water inside of it?" "Yes. This is a waterskin. It belongs to Liam, you see. He has a bunch of them, and he always uses them on his mission. He likes to fill them with water in case the need for him to use his magic came up and there was no water source near him. He told me to give you this one so you''ll use it during the mission tomorrow." Nicole explained. "He told you to give this to me?" "Yeah, I suppose...things are still awkward between you two still, huh? I told him he should give this to you himself, but he refused. He can be a weird guy sometimes, but he means well." Nicole spoke with a small smile on her face. "....He even stood up for me when Vincent was talking about how useless I''d be." Emily spoke, remembering that this waterskin is Liam''s second time being kind to her today. "He did! I know I shouldn''t say this, as I don''t want to come off as I''m putting pressure on you, but.... I''ll be so happy if you two came back from this mission on better terms." Nicole said, sounding a little unsure if she should voice her thoughts or not. Emily, however, kept her thoughts to herself. ...Me too, I suppose.
The next day, it was time for departure. "Are you sure you packed everything you might need, Karl?" Nicole asked as she went through Karl''s bag. "I think I did." Karl simply responded as he stared at Nicole going through his things. Meanwhile Emily had just finished packing, while making sure to place the waterskin on her waist. She doubted she''ll be able to use her magic well enough to make good use of it, but it still allowed her to carry some drinking water with her at least. "Is everyone ready?" Thandor asked as he looked at the Aludell members who were scattered around him in the living room. "Yes!" Was how Liam, Jaxon, and Emily responded. "And Karl? Thandor asked as he looked at Karl, but then turned his attention to Nicole. "He''s ready!" Nicole answered for the young boy, having just finished making sure he had all he might need. I wonder if Karl is nervous. This is his first mission too, so he must be. I should keep an eye out for him. "Alright, everyone. I''m appointing Liam as the team leader on this mission." Thandor spoke as Liam nodded, though Jaxon looked slightly annoyed. "Why him again?" Jaxon asked, irritated. Emily could tell he wanted to be the team leader instead. "He has the most experience out of all of you, that''s all." Thandor answered, though it wasn''t an answer Jaxon was happy with as he rolled his eyes. Most experience? I suppose that means Liam has been an Aludell member since before Nicole and Jaxon. Now that I''m thinking about it, I don''t know since when was the group Aludell made. "Now listen everyone, Vincent is waiting for you outside. He has a dual role here ¨C keeping a vigilant eye on all of you while also providing assistance when needed on this mission. Remember, stay level-headed, avoid hasty actions, and prioritize safety. Nicole and I eagerly await your safe return," Thandor conveyed with a firm yet benevolent tone, his gaze fixed on the Aludell members embarking on the mission. Nicole, standing beside him, wore a broad smile. "And upon your return, I''ll whip up something delectable for all of you to enjoy! Anticipate a delicious treat." Nicole added with a hint of excitement in her voice. Then, the team on the mission opened the front door of the house and walked out, ready to tackle this mission. We''ll be on our way west, to a town called Gekra in the Duchy of Willowmere. I''m not sure what might be waiting for me there, but...I''ll try my best to face it head on.
