《Beyond the root》
Prelude: This new fresh air
10th September 2149
As the plane finally lands after a 14-hour flight, banter arises between its passengers, primarily the adolescent they are meant to bring here, for the inside of the aircraft is suddenly filled with the many clashing moods exhibited by them.
For some, it is excitement. For others anxiety. Even indifference.
For they are faced with one reality.
" We are not at home. Outside will be a new world. A world, unknown to us."
" Man, that took so long! I thought this would be exciting, but who knew, that flying a plane is not only boring but also a massive pain..." And just like that, the silence from a mere moment ago was broken, jolting everyone aboard.
The girl, stood up without waiting for any instructions and started stretching, first things first.
" Zyana, try to restrain yourself a bit. I know, that you''re restless from the long flight, but keep your excitement in moderation. You''re not the only passenger in this plane." says the white haired boy next to her with an exasperated, yet amused expression.
" Sorry, my bad..." She says with an apologetic smile. " But we''re finally here! There''s so much I want to do, now that we landed! Explore the area, meet new people and so on!" She shouts with excitedly, already having forgotten the chiding from a moment ago.
" Not to burst your bubble, but that all will have to wait, until we get retrieved by the officials and brought to our new dormitory. And don''t forget that we will be monitored most of the time, so we don''t have that much freedom yet." The boy says with a sigh.
" Well, sorry for getting excited, Mr ''gloom'', but some of us go into all of this with a positive attitude. Stop bringing the mood down so much, Mael!" She whined half-jokingly at him as he rolled his eyes.
" Someone here has to keep you in check." He replied, which she promptly ignored with a pouty expression, earning a relaxed chuckle from him.
" Not to interrupt you lovebirds, but there are other people in this plane." A girl, with a blond ponytail, in the seat in front of them said, exasperated.
" But just like Mael said, we are not in the clear yet, so let''s be patient for now. We will be able to enjoy ourselves soon enough!" She said with a smile to brighten up the mood.
" Zoe, we are not here to be tourists. We are here to prepare for our futures." A boy, with tousled black hair, from the opposing site of the plane exclaims, a calm yet annoyed scowl plastered all over his face.
This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author''s work.
" I know, Eloy, but there is no harm in sometimes taking things easy, you know." The girl says in a soothing voice.
" After all, there''s no point to your education here, if you work yourself to the ground." Her encouragement met with yet another retort.
" I''m afraid, some of us here are taking things too easily." He says, not even looking at the people in question, who pretended not to be here.
"I meant you three, Izel, Joshua, Kaim. I know you heard me!" He grumbles.
" Oh, I am offended, that you would accuse me something like that, without a proper cause. I expected better from you, Eloy!" A boy, with dark brown hair and constantly closed eyes, expresses with an exaggerated gasp, followed by an infuriatingly mocking smirk.
" Kaim, you should take all of this more seriously. You will be the next leader of the clan, after all. Start acting like one!" he shouts, to which the boy turned his head to the other side and started whistling in an attempt to annoy him further. It did.
" Eloy''s got a point there. We''ve got to take things more seriously." The blond boy next to him says, attempting to sound serious. An effort that was betrayed by his extremely deadpanned delivery.
" You, of all people, should not be saying this, Joshua! And Izel, stop pretending to space out! I know you''re listening..." Eloy shouts, suddenly looking very exhausted.
" Oh, sorry, I wasn''t paying attention." The brown haired girl lied with a straight face.
"Whatever you were talking about, I concur. Now feel free to carry on without me." Her exclamation causing some giggles among her peers. The boy sighs in defeat.
" In any case," Zoe claps her hands to distract from this one-sided argument.
", Divian! You used to live in the outside world for a while, right? Is there anything we can expect? Or are there any stories you can share with us?" Zoe asks the boy with pale brown hair, in question.
" Huh... Oh!" The boy turns in surprise at suddenly being the centre of attention, when everyone''s focus was on the fight mere moments ago.
" Uhm... there''s nothing noteworthy, I could tell. I was really young, so there isn''t anything major I can recall from that time." He says nervously.
" Oh, don''t be pressured to say anything, it''s okay! Sorry for putting you on the spot like that." She says apologetically.
" Hey kids, come over here and start collecting your luggage!" An adult voice boomed throughout the entire plane.
"Geez, we landed not even five minutes ago! No need to shout like that..." Zyana mumbled annoyingly as the group stood up and go.
As the group stood in front of the exit, they took their first step down the boarding stairs, and they were met with...
A bright blue sky with the summer sun radiating everywhere, its rays hitting every pore in their bodies.
They were surrounded by a very vast space of nothingness where the plane ended with the airport in front of them, indicating the existence of a human civilization. There were buildings in the far distance, however, that to them looked like a part of a painting rather a reality in front of them.
The air was fresh, and the wind was gentle, bringing a slight breeze into this summer heat.
In short, it was nothing out of the ordinary. It''s a sight they''re used to.
Everything they see and experience here right now is nothing new. Nothing here seems to be actually new to them. These sights should all be familiar to them. It''s actually disappointingly normal.
And yet, one thought, distracted them from that fact
"This is a different world"
Everyone takes a resolute breath, taking in the surrounding atmosphere. This is the world they would live in for the next three years. A world designed by their predecessors, yet not actually inhabited by them.
This will be a journey that is planned out for them, to grow into adults who will carry on the clan''s will, yet the possibilities and consequences that lie in front of this path could very well be infinite.
And so Izel...
"Anybody know where the next restroom is?"
... proceeds to ruin this moment completely.
Chapter 1: Before the step towards tomorrow Part 1
2nd September 2149
¡°Hmmmm, and so the kingdom lived happily ever after, once more?¡± The girl thought to herself as she closed yet another book and placed it on the gigantic stack next to her.
¡°The ending was a bit clich¨¦ for me, but otherwise it was pretty enjoyable.¡± The girl thought to herself as she softly fell on the mountain of pillows behind her.
¡°It would have been significantly more enjoyable if the author actually created an epilogue instead of ending the story so abruptly. It¡¯s pretty irritating, whenever they decide not to expand on something that important. Is it really that difficult to provide that to the viewer?¡± She began to complain to herself further, as though she was speaking to the author directly. At some point, she caught on to her own internal ramblings and instead looked outside the window to take in the tiny flickers of light across the view in front of her. It was nighttime, so the pure white glow provided by the Aery lanterns and the bright light provided by the many houses, their colour of orange and yellow blending together, across the vast distance made it look like below was the starry night sky. It was mixing with the actual star filled sky, making the impression that one was surrounded by it. To the girl it felt especially so, when she resided in this house that stood alone, even the nearest houses being long distances away. It felt like she was the only living being in this world.
Well, if not for the person that is currently barging in, pulling her out of her imagination.
A boy the same age as her, yet with the eyes of a seasoned adult, opens the door to her room and kneels in front of her respectfully.
"Your Highness, I will have to leave during the morning to submit the documents concerning the upcoming ceremony. Additionally, I will go retrieve our ordered goods, as well, as preparing for the belongings you requested to take with you. I trust, there are no further changes you wish to make to the current plan you set up.
"Yes, Louis. I finished it all, and besides," The girl says dismissively. ¡°, You wouldn¡¯t let me rest until I took care of all that, you know.¡± She complained, her grievances falling on deaf ears to her irritation.
If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it.
¡°Yes, I did.¡± He says in both a respectful and amused tone of voice. ¡°I wouldn¡¯t have to push you like that, if you actually handled those affairs accordingly.¡± And so, his complaints, too, fell on deaf ears.
¡°So, you will be gone for the better half of a day, huh.¡± She considered. ¡°Well, don¡¯t be worried. Mael and Zyana will visit me like always, so I¡¯ll be fine.¡±
¡°I am well aware. The times they are here are the only times I can leave you alone with a clean conscience.¡± She didn¡¯t know if those words were meant as an appreciation for them or a jab at her.
¡°Oh, I almost forgot.¡± Her retainer suddenly remembered. ¡°I¡¯m well aware of what you¡¯ll say, but I¡¯ll ask anyway. I was, once again, approached by several nobles, specifically the ones belonging to Sol group. As always, they requested an audience with you. The number of arriving letters also don¡¯t decrease. What do you intend to do with them?¡±
¡°You already know my answer. You can ignore them all. And throw the letters in the pile, like always.¡± She promptly tells him, looking towards the corner to her left with a container full of unopened letters.
¡°You can make a gigantic campfire with the amount we collected¡¡± The boy thought to himself.
¡°As you wish.¡± He spoke.
¡°Don¡¯t these people have something better to do? When will they take the hint?¡± She sighed to herself. Rather than annoyed, the tone of her voice suggested, that she was seeing this as a routine she grew bored with.
¡°I highly doubt, that this will cease, even after you leave the island, once the approaching coming of age ceremony commences. If anything, it will increase, with the number of nobles and politicians across all continents. Not to mention, once you gain access to the Internet, contact with you will be easier than ever. If you actually announced those grievances and declared your unwillingness to cooperate, most of these people would finally give up.¡± He spoke in a blunt manner. His remark however didn¡¯t seem like an accusation, just a rational observation. ¡°If I may be so bold to say, it seems as though you enjoy toying with these people.¡±
She didn¡¯t deny that. ¡°I do admit that I may find amusement in all that.¡± She said with a faint smile. ¡°But hey, can you blame me? These are the few things I can entertain myself with here, you know?¡±
¡°I am well aware.¡± His voice sounding overly formal. ¡°I shall take my leave for now. I wish you a good night, Your Highness¡±.
¡°Thank you, Louis. You, too.¡± She said wistfully.
As her retainer closed the door behind him, he heaved a sigh.
¡° I wish you allowed yourself to pursue more entertainment and joy in life, Izel. You have the right to that, you know...¡± He thought to himself, until he carried on.

Chapter 1: Before the step towards tomorrow Part 2
???, 2149
¡°Mael, you will not become part of our research institute.¡± The voice in front of me said in a firm tone. Those were the first words I was greeted with when she invited me to visit.
As I stand in front of the entrance, not even being given the time to enter, as though to form a barrier between the two rooms, I stand there dumbfounded at the sudden words directed at me.
¡°Uhm, Phidelle, where is this coming from? And why so suddenly?¡± After recovering from the shock, I direct the question at the woman in front of me. Despite how casual I wanted to come across when saying this, the slight shakiness in my voice betrayed that effort. If she noticed, she didn¡¯t pay it any heed. Instead, she continues to look straight at me with unflinching eyes as she proceeds to elaborate.
¡°To be frank, out of all the people in the clan, and especially out of everyone in this generation, you are the most suitable candidate to become a part of my team. You are not only a diligent and knowledgeable student, but you are also full of genuine curiosity, our research included. Since the day you learned to walk, I can barely recall times when you didn¡¯t visit. Not to mention, you are a very responsible fellow who understands the importance of this institute. However, no matter how much potential you have, I still cannot, in good faith, consider you one of us. At least, not the way you are right now.¡± She says, unflinching.
Despite the praise she just gave me, the tone in her voice didn¡¯t give off nearly the same amount of warmth as her words did. It was neither a show of compassion nor was it one of contempt. In fact, it was hauntingly neutral. It''s just an observation without any feelings attached to it.
¡°This research is too important, Mael. I can neither risk it leaking elsewhere nor can I entrust it to someone undeserving of my trust. Especially not to someone like you.¡± The sudden coldness in her voice was spine-chilling, and her eyes abruptly gleamed with hostility. Never have I seen her act this way. Despite the sudden fear I currently experience, it felt to me like those words, that hostility, weren¡¯t directed at me.
As though she looked right past me. At someone else.
3rd September 2149
My eyes promptly open as I take in my surroundings.
¡°It¡¯s my room,¡± I mumble, followed by a sigh. Since that meeting, I have often dreamed of this exchange between Phidelle and me, trying to figure out what she meant by that. I still get a headache whenever I try to wrap my head around it.
¡°Hey, Mael, wake up already.¡± I hear an annoyed voice outside my room.
¡°I¡¯m awake, Aiden, you can come in.¡± I mumble as I massage my forehead, trying and failing to alleviate the headache from my dream. The lack of proper sleep made the words come out a bit rougher, although no comment on that was made. Instead, the door opens, revealing a young boy, with pale grey hair and dressed in training gear. My younger brother, Aiden.
¡°Good morning, now get up.¡± The tone in Aiden¡¯s voice dripping with annoyance. ¡°Isn¡¯t it about time, that you quit sleeping in? Fix your sleep schedule already.¡± He complains.
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
¡°If you consider, waking up at 06:30 in the morning, to be ¡°sleeping in, I''m afraid I will have to remain a repeat offender. Sorry, but some of us need proper sleep to function.¡± I retort. ¡°I¡¯m not in charge helping in the training hall like you, after all. If the need to do the opposite doesn''t exist, I would like to sleep properly.
¡°Unfortunately for you,¡± A familiar voice outside the room suddenly emerges. The owner of the voice enters the room completely uninvited. A girl with messy, long hair, the colour honey brown. She is clothed in a white training gear and a pink string jacket tied to her waist. ¡°You have your own duties. In fact, I came to retrieve you for that purpose!¡± The girl¡¯s loud and cheerful voice booms inside the room, a devilish grin plastered all over her face.
¡°Zyana¡¡± Startled, I shouted her name in a squeaky voice. I feel my face getting warmer, too.
This is Zyana, my friend since childhood and daughter to the chief of the Salviga¡¯s research institute.
¡°Must you always barge in unannounced? I didn¡¯t even get out of bed yet!¡± I complain, suddenly feeling very embarrassed. Although, at this point, I shouldn¡¯t be fazed by this, considering how often this happens with her around.
¡°Come now, Mael, after all this time together, I¡¯m basically a member of this house! The same applies to you, considering how often you visit our institute, my home, mind you. You practically live there.¡± She points out. ¡°We¡¯re family at this point, right, Aiden?¡± A cheesy statement, I still cannot help but blush at. She elbows him, hoping to get an agreement out of him.
¡°Sure.¡± He replies promptly, a hint of sarcasm escaping the words. ¡°Anyway, Mael, get going already. Especially if you¡¯re not going to any help around her. I still need to help father setting up the training devices, so scram. That includes you, too, Zyana.¡± He glares at both of us.
¡°Aiden, you should learn to be more polite about your animosity. Are you being so hostile because I might snatch up your position as headmaster?¡± She provokes jokingly, provoking a grunt from him.
¡°You¡¯re being awfully arrogant, today, I see. You shouldn¡¯t be so premature, you know¡¡± He mumbles.
The active hostility, exhibited by both, makes me sigh, exasperated. ¡°They seem to have forgotten that I¡¯m here¡¡± I''m thinking to myself.
¡°Anyway, we will be leaving, Aiden, don¡¯t worry. I just came to pick up Mael. We¡¯ll be visiting Izel, after all!¡± She says, to loosen the tension.
I reply. ¡°Alright. Meet me outside. I¡¯ll go get ready.¡±
¡°Sure thing!¡± She replies loosely, as she prepares to march out.
¡°You''re going to visit that girl again? You should really stop associating with her. She¡¯s not worth the trouble. Just because our families arranged it, doesn¡¯t mean you need to visit her as often as you do.¡± Aiden sighs, to which I glare at him in response as he flinches.
¡°Aiden, watch what you say.¡± I say in a threatening tone.
¡°Izel is a dear friend to us, no matter what you say. We visit her out of our own volition, Aiden. The family arrangements play no part in this, understood?¡± Zyana replies firmly, yet gently, as she places a hand on Aiden''s shoulder.
Aiden doesn¡¯t say anything in response and leaves the room with a huff.
Zyana snickers at that.
¡°You shouldn¡¯t lose your temper like that, Mael. You know, he just cares about you and the rest of this family. No matter how immature his perspective is, he just wants to prevent needless harm.¡± She says to me, with a faint smile, which calms me down a bit.
¡°I know. It would be nice if he learned to watch his mouth, though.¡± I sigh, exhausted. ¡°Go ahead, I¡¯ll meet you in ten minutes downstairs.¡± I exclaim.
¡°Roger.¡± she chuckles.

Chapter 1: Before the step towards tomorrow Part 3
3rd September 2149
¡°Zyana, I¡¯m ready to go. Sorry for the long wait.¡± I shout, as I leave the building and close the door behind me. When I turn around, I see that she decided to spend the waiting time on stretching exercises.
¡°No worries! Didn¡¯t hurt to do some warm-ups before we leave, so don¡¯t worry about it. In fact, while we¡¯re here, anyway, get over here, Mael! We¡¯re doing some right now!¡± She declared to me as she points a finger at me, beckoning me to her side as if I¡¯m her servant. Seeing my reluctant expression, she menacingly adds. ¡°Unfortunately for you, I¡¯m not about to let you neglect your health and fitness just because you''re too lazy to do this in the morning!¡±
I heave out a long sigh, having expected this. ¡°Fine. It¡¯s not like I have any right to refuse right now, since we¡¯re not in a hurry anyway¡¡± I say, in defeat, as I head over to her side.
After we were finished with our session, we finally went on our way to visit Izel. Her house is very far away, located on the far edges of the island and isolated from all the other residential districts, including our own, despite it being one of the closest ones to her. In fact, traveling there on our bicycles takes around five hours.
¡°By the way, what¡¯s in the bag?¡± Zyana asks me, pointing at the bag hanging by my right shoulder.
¡°Books, mostly.¡± I respond flatly.
¡°Oh, are these for Izel? How cute of you, to keep bringing her new ones.¡± She says with a smile that looks almost proud, until it grows mischievous. ¡°Be careful. Keep being a gentleman like that, and one might start to assume that you two are actually going out together.¡± She jokes, looking aside to stifle a giggle.
It''s ironic, hearing that from her.
I simply say, ¡°Shut it.¡±, in a casual tone.
As we reach the district centre, we encounter a group of children, surrounding a statue as they listen to an adult, presumably their teacher, giving a lecture. The statue depicts a young man, standing proudly, a sword in his left hand being raised high into the sky. The right hand, however, holds an apple that forward, making the impression that it is made as an offering. The children, in awe, look at the statue, as the teacher explains its significance.
¡°This, dear children, is the statue of Kaim, the Salviga clan¡¯s progenitor and the hero, who has once saved the world from calamity. Many thousands of years ago, humanity lived in peace until monsters of unknown origin began to roam the lands. They preyed on humans and became their biggest threat. The signified the world as they knew it. The people lived in constant fear and were on the brink of extinction. In those desperate times, our progenitor emerged, chosen by God to be their saviour. He was granted superhuman abilities, same as the one all of us have inherited to this day, and used not only to repel, but also to eventually eradicate the threat that once befell these lands. It is his legacy that was passed on to us and with is we inherited the duty as members of the clan to protect both our ideals, as well as the world. Remember children, just like everyone before you, it is these ideals that you need to continue upholding, so that we may continue serving the clan and the world we were entrusted with.¡±
It was a speech that me and Zyana were familiar with. These ideas were drilled into us since birth. The two of us, as well as every child that is raised within the confines of the Salviga clan.
¡°Hmmmm, that brings back memories from all of our trips around the island to visit all of those monuments.¡± Zyana reminiscences with a sour look on her face, that I can emphasize with wholeheartedly,
Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
I reply bluntly. ¡°Yeah, we were taken all around those parts just to be told the same speech over and over again¡¡± I grimace at the memories.
¡°Hey, careful, if anyone hears you speak in such away there¡¯ll be trouble, you know. But I get what you mean. It gets tiring to hear the same flowery speech every day.¡± She sighs. ¡°Hey, is that Divian over there?¡± She points at the group of children, upon which I notice a pair of adolescents who stick out like sore thumbs among the ocean of toddlers. ¡°Hey, Divian! Over here!¡± She suddenly shouts out, startling not only me, but the group seemingly as well.
One of the adolescent boys seem to recognize us, upon which he starts beaming. He looks nervously to the partner next to him and the adult teacher, who both seemingly give him permission to go. The boy approaching us is dressed quite plainly, donning a simple red T-Shirt and blue jean shorts, his ash blond hair in a bowl cut. He greets us with a bright smile.
This is Divian, a boy our age who, alongside us, will be attending the yearly ceremony and accompany us on our journey to the outside world next month.
¡°Hello, guys! What are you doing here?¡± He asks.
¡°Hi, Divian! Oh, we were just¡¡± Zyana says brightly before she stops herself from says anything further as she looks away, side-eyeing me.
Good to know, that she didn''t forget our talk.
¡°On an errand.¡± I finished for her, thanking her internally for letting me continue. ¡°I was just out to bring back some books I borrowed, and Zyana wanted to tag along.¡±
¡°Oh, I see. I was just surprised to see you out here.¡± He speaks innocently.
¡°We could say the same to you, though.¡± Zyana exclaims. ¡°We didn¡¯t expect to see you out here on a field trip alongside a group of toddlers.¡± She jokingly adds, pointing at the group that is currently waiting for them.
¡°Oh, Ian suggested, that I tag along with them to learn more about the Salviga. I¡¯m still lost on what you all consider basic knowledge here, so he thought it would be best to learn alongside a group of a similar level.¡± He says meekly, looking down in embarrassment.
¡°Ian? Is that your retainer?¡± I ask.
¡°Huh?¡± He asks confused. ¡°Oh, yes! He¡¯s my retainer.¡± He says, in a voice, that shows slight hesitance.
¡°I¡¯m surprised, they allowed you to follow them. Most of the adults here are quite¡ stubborn about these types of things.¡± I say, trying to mince my words.
Not to mention, they don¡¯t want to have anything to do with our group, Divian included. In fact, this might apply to him more than most of us. At least within our group.
¡°Well, Ian asked around, and apparently the teacher here, Miss Weld, approved!¡± He says happily.
¡°I¡¯m glad for you! Just remember, if you¡¯re struggling in any way, you can turn to us, too! We¡¯re part of the same group, after all!¡± Zyana says confidently.
¡°Thank you, I will.¡± He says, looking slightly embarrassed. ¡°Oh, I need to go. I can¡¯t keep them waiting forever. It was nice to meet you here, you guys! See you tomorrow!¡± He says, running towards the group and waving us goodbye.
We both wave in turn and continue our journey.
¡°He¡¯s such a sweet boy. It¡¯s a shame that he has such a rough time as an outsider here¡¡± Zyana sighs.
¡°You sounded like a grandma just now.¡± I say with a snicker as she, in annoyance, lightly flickers me on the shoulder, which hurt a lot more than it should.
¡°I agree with you, though.¡± I say seriously. ¡°I can¡¯t imagine what it must feel like, having to live in a place you know nothing about and being treated like an outsider.¡± I say wistfully.
¡°To be fair, when it comes to being treated like an outsider, everyone in our group knows how that one feels like. Even Kaim.¡± Zyana exclaims, with an attempt to add humour.
¡°Well, in Kaim¡¯s case I¡¯d say that he¡¯s the one purposefully inciting that treatment, no matter how subtle it might be.¡± I sigh.
¡°That¡¯s true.¡± She giggles. ¡°But really all of us here deal with that in some shape or form. You, me, Divian, Zoe, Joshua, Eloy, Kaim, and Izel.¡± She says wistfully. ¡°That¡¯s why it is so important for us to help each other. I mean, that¡¯s why we¡¯re visiting Izel right now!¡±
¡°Yeah¡¡± I say hesitantly at that.
¡°By the way are you sure, that we need to keep quiet about our visits like this. It¡¯s not like Divian would blab, right? Nor would anyone do anything about it, anyway.¡± She turns to me, questioning me gently.
¡°I know, but it¡¯s still better if fewer people know. She has enough on her plate, and the least she needs is more prying eyes.¡± I say resolutely. Zyana regards me with a slight smile on her face and to my bewilderment proceeds to pat my head.
¡°Hey, what¡¯s got into you!?¡± I jolt away, my face reddening.
¡°Just felt like it.¡± She says with a smirk.

Chapter 1: Before the step towards tomorrow Part 4
3rd September 2149
Having left Divian and his group behind, we decided to track on, as we traverse the district to reach the exit gate. Having visited some of the lower class districts in my travels to visit Izel, I¡¯ve noticed our district is very luxurious in comparison. It makes sense, considering the fact that it is reserved for the higher-class members of the clan, like the families me and Zyana belong to. Lower class members and the honorary Salviga members, also known as the Apis, live in districts separate from ours, as they¡¯re generally closer to the edges of the island, while our districts largely cover the centre of the remaining land. The infrastructure here is ridiculously extravagant with far lager buildings with much more elaborate designs. The residents belonging to the many nobles here are also extremely far apart from one another, their property being huge. Having lived in this district for the better part of my entire life, it never occurred to me how different the living conditions were for the citizens of their respective status. That is not to say that they suffer under bad living conditions. Far from it in fact. Every member of the Salviga clan is provided with more than adequate livelihoods, as it is considered a basic right. From what I¡¯ve learned in books and from the institute members, the same does not apply to the people in different countries outside our island. Apparently, there are even people out there who don¡¯t have a home to call their own nor are they properly provided with other necessities. From that I¡¯ve heard this also occurs in the districts belonging to the normal commoners that live in the other islands, belonging to the Salviga.
As we travel across the stone-paved road that seems almost endless, with the buildings and the gates separating each property looking the exact same it is probably difficult to navigate for outsiders. Thankfully we traveled this path many times, so we''re able to find the right way without issue.
We finally reach the gate to the outside and approach the stationed guards. They notice us and immediately put on friendly smiles.
¡°Good morning! Please, state your names and intentions.¡± One of them asks in an excessively polite tone, in fear of offending us in any way. That¡¯s a typical reaction when dealing with any high-class members here.
¡°My name is Mael Qinz.¡± I state my name first.
¡°My name is Zyana Demir.¡± Zyana states next.
¡°Alright, children belonging to the respective Qinz and Demir families.¡± He says, proceeding to check the list to confirm our identities. ¡°So, your reasons for leaving?¡± He continues.
I explain concisely. ¡°We are on an errand on behalf of the Research institute, issued by the chief, Leith Demir.
¡°Alright, may I see your permission papers.¡± He goes on, as we take out our papers, signed by our respective families. He checks them for a moment until he stamps them and goes to the side granting us passage.
We say our thanks and leave the district for good. After we put some distance behind us Zyana decides to finally talk. I was honestly amazed that she managed to keep quiet for so long.
¡°Whew, thank God the guards don¡¯t ask too many questions. Makes sense, considering they could potentially piss off the wrong nobles, if they prod too much."
¡°True. It helps that I don¡¯t have to tell them our actual intentions, either.¡± I say.
¡°You have my father and Phidelle to thank for that. Without giving you an excuse like that, it would be difficult otherwise.¡± She states proudly.
¡°Yeah, I¡¯ll have to thank them the next time I see them.¡± I smile to myself.
¡°In case you forgot, we¡¯ll pass by the institute after we head back anyway, so you can do that then.¡± She states with raised eyebrows.
¡°Oh right, visiting them wasn¡¯t just an excuse.¡± I say, apparently having forgotten that detail.
¡°You promised to help with the library, remember? I swear, they should be able to handle that themselves.¡± She sighs.
¡°Hey, I enjoy doing it. It¡¯s exciting to see what new books and other types of media arrive next, while I sort through them.¡± I say assuredly.
¡°Yeah yeah, I get it you love your knowledge, blah blah blah¡¡± She says mockingly. ¡°I swear, you, my father and the others at that place all share the same braincell, when it comes to your weird obsession! That¡¯s why Phidelle is so quick to take advantage of you all!¡±
¡°Hey, Phidelle shares the same passion, you know. It''s not like we''re her slaves.¡± I correct her.
¡°Yeah, I¡¯m sure.¡± She says. ¡°At this point, they should just hire you as an intern or something to actually work alongside them instead of making you handle these small errands. They shouldn¡¯t waste your talents.¡± She goes on.
I get startled by these words, as I recall the conversation, I had with Phidelle. After she refused to take me in as a member, even though I never mentioned wanting to be included anyway, she didn¡¯t mention it in any other interactions I had with her. Not even once. She just carried on as usual to being the nice, yet aloof leader of the institute. So, it should be understandable that I am deeply confused by her words and actions, as I still don¡¯t understand what she wanted to convey to me that day.

I get pulled back to reality, as I notice Zyana¡¯s progressively more concerned expression at me.
¡°Hmmmm, I guess they want me to continue testing me with these tasks until I¡¯m ready. Well, there¡¯s no need to rush, right?¡± I say, trying to sound as convincing as I can be.
¡°Sure.¡± She says, obviously not believing me, but deciding to not press the issue any further.
We travel for some time, riding along the massive fields of grass that expand endlessly in the distance, the wildlife brimming with all kinds of animals out in the open. Horses gathered around on a hill up ahead and dogs not far from us, chasing each other around. The only sign of human presence being the stone paths laid across the open plain. We travel along that path until we enter a forest. The trees here have covered most of the sky with barely any light passing through and the wildlife being less colourful as a result. Throughout this gloom, the only other source of light are the Aery butterflies that surround us on our travel. These creatures flutter around in huge swarms and emit crimson lights that provide the scenery of this dark forest with beautiful flickers of lights.
¡°As always, we get greeted with this beautiful scenery. It¡¯s a sight I can¡¯t seem to get sick of.¡± Zyana sighs in awe.
¡°Yeah.¡± I agree. ¡°Although it¡¯s a shame that we need to avoid them as always, too.¡± I continue.
¡°Yep. Nature can be really stupid, sometimes.¡± She grumbles.
Although Aery butterflies are revered for their beauty, they are also known for being pests that stick to living beings like a parasite. Although the cause is still unknown, contact with these creatures tend to leave you feeling incredibly lethargic. Unlike many other creatures on this planet, they haven''t been researched enough for us to properly understand their nature. They almost seem magical. Like they''re not even supposed to exist. But they¡¯re mostly harmless and serve to be nothing more than a mild inconvenience. Thankfully they are practically blind, so avoiding them is pretty easy.
After traveling for an hour or two, we decided to take a moment of rest, as we started looking for a decent spot. We soon find a pair of boulders that are thankfully not covered in moss, so we could sit down without having to worry about staining our clothes in the process. I take a deep breath and try to relax my feet for now.
¡°Alright, we crossed a bit of a distance. It won¡¯t be so long now. Hey, would you mind passing me the water bottle? I forgot mine at home¡¡± She says apologetically.
¡°Sure, no problem.¡± I say, tossing the bottle in her direction as she catches it perfectly.
¡°Thanks.¡± She takes a big gulp and tosses it back to me. Before I try to drink a bit too, I suddenly flinch and put the bottle back in my bag. She looks at me with a puzzled expression. ¡°Aren¡¯t you going to drink? We¡¯re still some distance away.¡±
I look to side, trying to suppress the blush on my face. ¡°I¡¯m not thirsty right now.¡± I say as an excuse. Thankfully, she doesn¡¯t press me any further.
¡°Suit yourself.¡± She utters a simple response. ¡°Although don¡¯t push yourself too much, okay?¡± She suddenly says in a gentler tone. ¡°If you push yourself too much, just to keep up with me like last time, you¡¯ll get a pinch by the cheek from me. Got it?" She adds a bit jokingly.
¡°You know, I could say the same about you.¡± I counter, imitating her tone. ¡°We both know you can travel this entire distance nonstop without a sweat, so why should you try to match me?¡±
¡°That¡¯s different, idiot.¡± She scoffs at me mockingly. ¡°Your body can¡¯t handle as much strain as the rest of ours can, so you shouldn¡¯t needlessly hit a breaking point out of sheer stubbornness. Between resting a bit and pushing oneself too far this is much better.¡±
¡°This coming from the girl who ruthlessly has me train against my will.¡± Thinking to myself, I chuckle a bit, trying to keep this irony to myself.
Instead, I half-jokingly say. ¡°You shouldn¡¯t try to match me like this so stubbornly either. Nor should you constantly follow me on this errand. You have your training to think about, you know. You shouldn¡¯t waste your time on whatever I¡¯m doing. Unlike me you have a future you passionately pursue right now, so¡¡± I go on until I feel a sharp pain, as she¡¯s currently pinching my right cheek.¡±
Having successfully stopped me from talking any further, she lets go, as I rub my cheek in pain.
¡°You deserved that one.¡± She says amused but also a bit upset. ¡°I do this alongside you because I want to. Whatever other goals I have don¡¯t mean anything in that regard. If I want to tag along, that¡¯s what I¡¯m going to do. Not unless you explicitly refuse me. We¡¯ve always done the important stuff together and I sure as hell don¡¯t intend to stop anytime soon if I have any say in the matter. You¡¯re stuck with me.¡± She says in the end with an encouraging smile on her face. ¡°Any further stupid comment of that nature will be met with the same response.¡± She adds, her hand inching dangerously close to my cheek again.
¡°Understood. Message received. Sorry for saying something unnecessary. So would you please move your hand away from my face, please?¡± I say, continuously sounding more nervous.
¡°As long, as you¡¯ve learned your lesson.¡± She smirks, pulling away.
¡°Anyway, I¡¯m feeling refreshed, so how about we go on our way?¡± I say, as I¡¯m standing up and dust off my pants.
She eyes me suspiciously, so I add nervously. ¡°I¡¯m well rested, so please, don¡¯t look at me with such murderous eyes!¡±
¡°Alright, I¡¯ll hold you to that.¡± She says jumping off the boulder towards me.
She pats me on the shoulder and reassuringly says. ¡°Whether you like it or not I will always be behind you. I¡¯m not letting you shoulder everything by yourself, and I will make sure to reprimand you for even trying. Not to mention I have fun tagging along! Haven¡¯t we always done everything together?¡±
¡°Thanks.¡± I sigh in defeat, smiling without meaning to. ¡°So, I trust you¡¯ll read the next edition from ¡°The Harellian mythology¡± series, so we can talk about it together, right? You did say you¡¯ll tag along in anything.¡± I cheekily say, to poke fun at her.
She slightly flinches at my comment until she cockily smirks at me and responds. ¡°Of course, I will! If you thought you could turn me into a hypocrite that fast, just because I hate reading, you¡¯re dead wrong! That also means you¡¯ll gladly join me in my next training regiment, right?¡± She asks with a smirk, as I¡¯ve realized, that I just dug my own grave.
¡°Well played.¡± I say in defeat.
Interlude: Manufactured Stars
¡°Louis Paer, please step forward.¡±
Hearing my name, I immediately stood up straight.
Elegantly and diligently, just like all of us were instructed to.
Just like, we practiced for the entire month. Me, alongside the other prospective retainers.
As the audience¡¯s gaze falls upon me, I slowly walk up to the stage.
The voice in front of me begins to ring out across the entire stage, as though it enveloped us all, as well as the entire world. This entire world, however, was nothing more than us at the stage and the audience who pretended to care about this event. In fact, even the entire island does not care for us. Not in the slightest.
The eyes belonging to that voice stare directly into me, their vibrant green looking towards me, commanding me to do the same.
In this single moment, that felt like an eternity, I realized long before that this gaze wasn¡¯t fixated on me in the slightest.
I wasn¡¯t even in front of them.

¡°You, too, have demonstrated, the diligence and ambition befitting a member of the Salviga clan.
All of you on this stage represent everything, that your peers, as well as those who precede you, should always strive toward.
As such, you shall all be bestowed the privilege of serving those above you.
Louis Paer, you have been given the privilege of serving Izel Salviga, member of the main family.
May you fulfil this duty to its utmost.
May you bring honour to the family, who raised you.
May you work on furthering this sacred clan''s legacy.
And may you serve the princess to your utmost capacity. Protecting her forevermore.¡±
The warmth of those words, the words showering me with the intention to convey respect and acknowledgement, feel, to me, the same as when I walked towards the stage that welcomed me.
Practiced
I see it everywhere I look.
The cheering audience. Who celebrate me.
Practiced
The silent audience. Who deem me unfit.
Practiced
Even the uncaring look of the person I will from now on serve, devoid of any interest before the scene in front of her.
Practiced
It feels like the entire world watches me, put all its purpose on me.
And yet, I feel like the most insignificant being, like my existence could wither.
Like my existence could fade any moment.
Like it could it be replaced by anyone.
This gaze just happened to be placed on me. It didn''t have to be me.
Yes, the worth I am currently experiencing was fabricated for a purpose, beyond my own self.
I am simply partaking in a theatre, designed by the ones above me.
I was once again reminded of just how small I am in this world.
Chapter 1: Before the step towards tomorrow Part 5
3rd September 2149
The moment I wake up, I¡¯m immediately up and about, beginning my morning routine.
I immediately begin with my stretching exercises and head downstairs prepare for the day.
The moment I step into the living room I immediately get ambushed by a group of furry little creatures.
A group of four kittens, to be exact.
They circle around me and start meowing demandingly.
¡°Alright, alright, I get it, you want to eat. I better shut you gluttons up before you wake her up. Not like this will, but still.¡± I sigh, as I grab a container from a drawer, and pour the insides into a big bowl. They sprint towards the food and immediately proceed to feast on the fish I prepared yesterday as a little treat.
¡°Pretty fortunate for you all, that you have someone who can catch you the fresh kind, don¡¯t you think.¡± I flatter myself, the cats not paying any mind to it, as they greedily devour their meal.
Having taken care of that I put on my shoes for my morning run. I run around the manor first things first, to examine the entire perimeter, looking for anything suspicious. After doing my rounds, I take a moment to breath and relax, until I finally start running down the hill. The manor we live in is placed on the far edge of the island, in fact one side is directly facing a cliff, the wide ocean beneath. The hill is very high up, so I can easily see the entire village from far away. Dawn has barely started, so most of the houses are still dark beyond their windows. In fact, the only source of lights I can see are the dimly glowing Aery lanterns on the outer parts inside the walls. After running around in the expansive green landscape here, I head back home.
Entering the building I can see that the cats have finished their meal and run toward me to rub against my legs affectionately, purring loudly. They can be very sweet when they don¡¯t annoy someone with their food demands.
I head upstairs, the cats following me, and arrive at a door. I knock on it and wait patiently. After not receiving a response, from the person behind it, I open the door and head towards figure laying in their bed, sleeping contently, and snoring loudly. Used to the routine I promptly flip the mattress upside down, the sleeping beauty falling with a thud.
¡°You know, you could just shake me awake.¡± The girl in front of me grumbles, as she raises her body and sleepily rubs her eyes.
Her long, flowy hair, the colour being a dark shade of brown, hangs messily over her face. Her green eyes stare at me tiredly, her face turning into a discontent scowl.
¡°We both know, that wouldn¡¯t achieve anything, Your Highness.¡± I say respectfully, at which she grumbles in response, and yet she doesn¡¯t refute it.
¡°The invincibility of your body is truly remarkable, after all. To the point that it also influences your capability of waking up early or being conscious enough to properly take care of yourself to an impressive degree.¡±
¡°Your tone is pretty contradictory, when you address me as ¡°Your Highness¡± and complimenting me, while blatantly mocking me in the same breath.¡± She says in her usual tone, that suggests it was a mere observation, instead of an outright complaint.
¡°I apologize for coming across this way, your Highness. I would like to add, however, that I doubt those remarks will cease in the foreseeable future, if you continue to disregard my previous remarks.¡± I say bluntly, clearly doing it on purpose this time.
¡°I believe they will, but thank you for making that clear to me, at least.¡± She says promptly. Yawning in an extremely rude manner, as if to reiterate her point, she stands up and begins to dress herself, which I take as my cue to leave, not before I bow respectfully.
I sigh loudly and head downstairs to prepare for my trip today.
¡°Alright, I¡¯m done. What¡¯s for breakfast?¡± The voice behind me rings out, while I¡¯m busy stirring the pan. I look behind me to see. She wears a purple dress that reaches a bit past her knees and wears her signature hair ornament, a red cloth wrapped around the side of her head that gathers a fistful of hair in a bundle, a streak of hair peeking from beneath.
¡°I believe we already had a talk about being barefooted inside, haven¡¯t we, Your Highness?¡± I speak with a forceful tone.
¡°It¡¯s comfortable, it¡¯s not cold right now and, no, I don¡¯t mind, that it isn¡¯t proper, don¡¯t you worry.¡± She bluntly declares, to which I sigh.
¡°A regular breakfast, just like you always request, Your Highness.¡± I respond to her previous question. ¡°Alright I will be on my way now, Your Highness. The pair will be here soon, so I will be going on my way now. Have a good meal and please prove to be an adequate host for them.¡±
¡°Noted. I¡¯ll do my best.¡±
Translation: ¡°Sure, in my own way, I will."
As I ready the handcart for the trip, I can already spot a pair of people climbing up the hill, dragging their bicycles beside them. The brown-haired girl exhibits an aura of confidence and positivity, which is heavily contrasted by the calm and polite air around the white-haired boy beside her.
I step forward to greet them cordially.
¡°Lord Mael and Lady Zyana, good morning to you both.¡± I say, bowing respectfully.
¡°Good morning, to you, too, Louis. But can you please stop addressing us in such an overly formal way. At this point, we really shouldn¡¯t greet each other so tensely.¡± The pair say.
¡°I assure you both, that I do not continue this manner of speak with the intention of making you feel tense or uncomfortable. I can proceed with calling you both by your first names. If you so desire, I could even refer to you both as ¡°dudes¡± or something else in that manner. So long as you ask it, I will abide by any request, so long as it in the name of your authority.¡± I say, keeping the tone of my voice as neutrally polite as possible during the entire speech.

¡°Having fun, messing with us?¡± the honourable Mael of the Qinz family asks after a while.
¡°Very much, so.¡± I say simply, with a polite smile.
¡°You and Izel are truly made for each other.¡± Her excellence, Zyana Demir retorts.
¡°Anyways, are you already heading out?¡± Zyana, daughter to the chief of the Salviga institute, and possible candidate for the position of headmaster of the training halls, with her strength being as unparalleled, as her ambitions are grand, asks.
¡°Yes. In addition to the monthly supply retrieval, I also need to deliver the paperwork, so I will be gone for quite a bit longer. I should however likely return until the end of your class sessions.¡± I say concisely.
¡°Understood, don¡¯t worry we will keep Izel company till then.¡± Mael, who will likely succeed the chief of the Salviga institute and work for the mysterious Phidelle Laserve, who¡¯s reputation as witch within the confines of the clan is known by everyone, with his responsible and wise attributes befitting a future scholar, reassures.
¡°I sincerely thank you, both for everything you do for me and her Highness.¡± I bow, conveying my heartfelt gratitude. ¡°Anyways, I apologize, but I will need to leave now. Time is of the essence.¡±
These two sacred beings, belonging to the highest ranking families, whose class a lowly peasant like me would never dare to try to approach, as they have the biggest influence not only within the borders of this island, but who¡¯s reach is far beyond, touching every country of every corner of the world, now grace me with words that someone of my station would never deserve to hear.
¡°Of course, see you soon.¡±
As they wave me goodbye, I leave with the handcart in hand, as I chuckle to myself after I put some distance between us.
As I arrive at the village I am halted by the guards at the gate.
¡°Alright, Paer.¡± The guard speaks in a disinterested tone. "Another trip down south, I suppose?¡±
¡°Yes, I need to retrieve our monthly supplies and- ¡°I say, until he rudely cuts me off.
¡°Yeah, yeah, we know.¡± He says dismissively. ¡°Well then, have a safe trip.¡±
¡°You don¡¯t need to check me?¡± I say puzzled.
¡°We were already over that conversation many times, weren¡¯t we? Let¡¯s just save us both the time and energy, alright?¡± He inquires.
¡°Very well.¡± I say eventually. ¡°Thank you for letting me pass.¡±
¡°Sure¡± He simply says as he proceeds to ignore me and relax.
I head inside and walk the streets, as I¡¯m being regarded with cold stares by some onlookers. Lower class Salviga nobles, I assume.
I pay them no heed and continue along the path until I¡¯m intercepted by someone with an extremely polite smile on their face.
¡°It is good to see you again, Louis.¡± The boy, presumably around my age greets me, calling me by my first name, as though we are close. I don¡¯t bother to correct him.
¡°Listen, I recall passing my master¡¯s request on to you, for Lady Izel. Were you able to.¡± He asks expectantly.
¡°I would like to ask the same question, too.¡± Says another person approaching us, a girl a little older than both of us.
Soon enough, some other people, all retainers and servants alike, come to approach me, their inquiry, all the same.
¡°I have passed your messages on; however, her Highness expressed her reluctance to answering them at the moment. The esteemed lords will have to wait for a proper answer.¡± I say concisely, staying as vague as possible.
¡°But her Highness, will be leaving island soon, following the ceremony next week. My master is growing inpatient.¡± A boy in the group remarks, his voice dripping with irritation.
¡°I¡¯m afraid, that is not up to me nor your esteemed masters. I answer bluntly, shutting him down. ¡°If you¡¯ll excuse me.¡± I politely say, as I leave the angry mob behind.
¡°Great, now I have to go explain this to my milord, thanks to scum like this.¡± A boy complains, having lost all pretence for civility.
¡°Becoming a retainer to the main family, has really made that guy arrogant, I see.¡± Another voice says, as if I couldn¡¯t hear.
¡°Him and that damn woman. Having that status went right through her head, if she thinks she can mock the nobles like that.¡± Another voice said with contempt.
¡°These two are outcast, anyways. Neither the main family nor the other nobles want anything to do with her. They should be happy, that we bother with them, at all. As if they amounted to anything in this clan.¡± Another voice rings out.
All manner of slander ring out, complaining about Izel¡¯s status and supposed influence. Even debasing her, demeaning her standing in the clan, as they don¡¯t even realize their own contradictions.
I heave out a deep sigh as I continue along the road ahead.
¡°Welcome, esteemed guests, to our humble abode. We appreciate your presence and hope you have had a safe travel here. We will accommodate you to the best of our abilities and hope that you will have an enjoyable stay¡¡± The girl in front of us says in the most monotone tone imaginable.
¡°Wow! If you raise your hands excitedly next time, I''m sure your performance will be even more believable, Izel.¡± Zyana claps beside me, genuinely amused.
¡°What she said.¡± I state simply.
¡°Thanks for the compliments. I do my best.¡± She says and I¡¯m not sure, whether her tone was sincere or not. Probably not.
¡°But make yourselves at home, all the same. You haven¡¯t had breakfast yet, right? Then let¡¯s eat. Louis already prepared us some.¡±
¡°How considerate of him. He¡¯s doing a better job of hosting, and he isn¡¯t even here.¡± I say amusedly.
¡°Oh, but before this, I brought a new batch of books. I assume you¡¯re finished with the previous ones?¡± I say, taking them out of my bag and handing them over.
¡°Oh thanks, yeah, I just ran out of them yesterday. Sorry for the trouble.¡± She says in a tone that suggests some sincerity. I think, at least.
¡°Don¡¯t bother thanking me¡± I say, as I take back the previous batch to take back. ¡°These aren¡¯t even mine, to begin with, so it¡¯s not me you should be thankful to but Mister Leith.
¡°They¡¯re basically yours.¡± Zyana retorts beside me. ¡°I¡¯d say you practically live in the institute and that¡¯s saying as someone who actually lives there.¡±
¡°Well, if you say it like that.¡± I say, bashfully scratching my face.
¡°Anyways how did you like them?¡± I continue, getting back to the topic at hand.
¡°They were pretty good. The fairytale collection wasn¡¯t really my cup of tea. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed the anthology about Cearnian mythology. The public libraries would never have something like that.¡±
¡°Yes, I¡¯m grateful to have access to the institute¡¯s library. They have books that are either banned or flat out censored. There¡¯re practically no records kept, concerning Cearnian culture nor their history.¡± I ramble on.
¡°Makes sense, considering Cearn isn¡¯t exactly buddies with most countries in the continent. From what I¡¯ve heard, we currently have fewer and fewer officials stationed there. It also doesn¡¯t help the Salvigas dismiss ¡°irrelevant¡± information about most countries anyway, since they¡¯re ¡°beneath¡± us.¡± Izel says, looking at the book in question with a sigh.
¡°Anyways, let¡¯s save the book talk for later.¡± Zyana says, feeling left out. ¡°We¡¯re leaving in a week. Are you prepared already?¡± She inquires, genuinely curious.
¡°Well, the paperwork is done. Rather, Louis made it get done, I should say. He¡¯s currently delivering it, as he probably told you already. Other than that, I¡¯m just waiting to get the ceremony done and leave. Right now, we just deal with all the nobles trying to approach me, but that¡¯s about it.¡±
¡°These people should finally get the hint.¡± Zyana says genuinely furious. ¡°I mean isn¡¯t enough, that you lived in this manor away from anybody else?¡±
¡°I mean, it¡¯s kind of entertaining to see them be so stubborn, but yeah, it gets old quickly. It is a bit annoying to be used as a symbol of their disputes. Pretty sure Kaim has to deal with that on his end, too. Probably even more so. Other than that, though, I just enjoy myself reading your books and creating some new clothing concepts. Mostly for Louis, though he¡¯s very reluctant about trying them on for some reason.¡± She says, looking puzzled.
¡°Oh, I wonder.¡± I say sarcastically.
I can understand Louis¡¯ feelings all too well. I too, have been used by her as a guinea pig for her, well, ¡°unique¡± ideas. The last time, I had to put on something that I¡¯m pretty sure was just a bikini. At least going by the pictures Phidelle showed him. Things like this were certainly things no Salviga would or should know about. Frankly, I¡¯m a bit scarred.
While I was lost in thoughts reexperiencing some of the trauma the two have moved to the kitchen to eat breakfast.
I follow suit and drive the memories away.
After we were done with our meal, we spent the rest of the day talking. Whenever Izel and I started discussing books together, Zyana would zone out and play with the cats. Whenever they discussed fashion together, I would zone out. For some reason, Zyana actually likes Izel¡¯s weird taste in that field so I would just let them be during those moments, terrified of becoming yet another subject today. Other than that, we just idled the day away like every visit staying overnight until we go to school together the next day and Louis eventually returns from his trip.
From beyond the Unknown (AKA Im finally back from whatever Ive been doing!)
Hello everyone!
It''s been so long! More than a third of a year to be exact! (Jeez, I didn''t think so much time passed...)
Going straight to the point, yes, I plan to continue uploading chapters!
It would be an understatement to say, that there has been a long downtime here, and I''m not even sure how many people still have any interest left, but I digress.
About the reason, why it took so long, I think it most prudent to just come out clean. To be blunt, I really needed to take a step back from everything. Back then, I have already announced, that there would be a long hiatus, because my exam period for my apprenticeship began, so I decided to dedicate my focus on that. While I expected to return shortly upon being done with my exams, I ended up taking two more months, because 1) I lacked both the motivation and energy to continue. 2) I wanted to reevaluate my storytelling. I wanted to reconsider the pacing and certain parts of the story, as I didn''t consider them being entirely "optimized". There was also the issue of my writing style. Simply put, concerning my writing, I struggled to find my footing. It''s important to consider a writing style that not only invites the reader to continue with the story, but also feels comfortable for me to write. There''s also the issue of my upload schedule and the content itself. Usually, I did weekly chapters in smaller parts that were within a word count of about 1000¨C2000. Later on, I announced, that I wanted to try out writing full chapters within 2¨C4 weeks. However, I quickly became unsure of, whether I would be able to keep this schedule up. There is also another issue I needed to address to both you and myself. That issue is... I originally wanted to publish this story in the form of a webcomic. However, I didn''t feel comfortable with my drawing skills, as I am still very much an amateur. I haven''t drawn for a long time, so I still want to practise, before going further with that plan. Because of this, I have resorted to start out with a webnovel, which is why I''m here! I do plan to eventually start the comic, however I will likely continue with the novel in tandem, even if the uploads would decrease in frequency.
Unauthorized usage: this narrative is on Amazon without the author''s consent. Report any sightings.
I think I have finally found my footing again, however I doubt that this will be the end, as I quite frankly still have no idea, what I''m doing. But I feel rejuvenated, which is what mattered the most to me.
As such, I would like to announce the following about a lot of the decisions I made for my future uploads. This info may not be interesting to you, but I would like to say those things out loud, nevertheless. So here goes...!
1. I will continue with the previous pattern, when it comes to my upload schedule. Basically, chapters being cut in shorter parts and uploaded weekly,
2. I''m changing my writing style. Previously, I went with first-person perspectives, when it came to depicting the story. I also wanted to limit the information the reader would receive and try to be very cryptic, when it came to character interactions, as I wanted to go with a more mysterious vibe to contrast the light-hearted moments I tried to convey in most parts of the plot. However, I soon realized that I don''t think I can execute this writing style in the way I wanted. It requires a considerable amount of experience and literary skills. As such, it felt like I was failing to grab the reader''s interest in the story and characters. For this reason, I chose to go with third-person perspectives for the storytelling. Additionally, I will be less cryptic, when it comes to conveying information. I feel like this will be a better direction for me, however I will wait and see, whether this style resonates with me.
3. As mentioned above, in the not so far future I would like to begin with the comic, but I will do my best to not abandon the webnovel version of this story!
Alright, this was a lot of talking on my part, and I''m not sure, whether anyone bothered to read any of this. However, I am glad you''re here all the same!
While I wasn''t able to write a chapter today, I would like to offer you a little preview to make up for it! Enjoy!
"I wasn''t able to introduce myself last time we met! I''m Divian!"
The boy introduced himself to his peer, as though they are equals. His outstretched hand gesturing him to take it with a warm smile plastered on his face was a complete contrast to the attitude Alphonse witnessed moments ago. From the people, sharing the same status as the boy before him, yet being entirely different beings by nature. He could tell that this boy lived in another world entirely...

¡°Is there any way I can help here?¡±
Those are the thoughts that currently inhabit the mind of a certain young boy, as he walks across the massive rooms of his by now familiar, yet still distant place of residence.
This adolescent who roams these halls warily, surely looking like a lost puppy, is Divian Selv. Fifteen years of age and member of the Salviga clan. And as of this moment he is helplessly in face of the one thing he can¡¯t handle no matter what:
Being unproductive
Approximately 15 minutes ago he was summoned by the head maid of the mansion belonging to the Aisen family.
¡°Good morning, Master Divian.¡± The head maid spoke promptly, while bowing in a manner so natural, that still feels alien to him. He has yet to adapt to the mannerisms of this new environment. Nevertheless, resisting the urge to bow in response, as it is apparently not acceptable to do so for him.
¡°Good morning, to you too, Miss Zaie.¡± Nevertheless, he smiles brightly and greets her with the polite warmth he himself is familiar with. At least this is supposed to be allowed. However, she does not quite reciprocate for she carries on with the same cordial, yet distant tone and expression. For what it¡¯s worth, Divian understands that this is not out of any malice pointed towards him, but that does not alleviate the awkwardness he feels right now. She carries on.
¡°I was informed by the master and asked to pass on the message, that all of your home lessons are cancelled for today.¡±
¡°Oh.¡± Was all that Divian could say in response. He tries his best not to show any expression on his face or let out the breath he unknowingly held. He is afraid of letting it slip, that he might feel a bit of relief. He always feels really pressured, whenever his teacher arrives, as the moment they enter the room any ¡°inappropriate¡± manners will be met with immediate reprimand. Although he doesn¡¯t feel any special reservations regarding school lessons, the strictness he endured so far were above and beyond anything he experienced at school back then.
¡°Uhm, what is the occasion?¡± He replies after a brief pause. And yet, that brief pause was enough to earn a disapproving glance by her, as one is supposed to reply in a perfectly brief and curt manner.

¡°He has left for a meeting with new government officials and has decided to have you participate, as well.¡±
¡°I¡¯m supposed to participate?¡± And, just like that, the relief he felt has dissipated immediately.
Seeing his panicked expression, she couldn¡¯t help but sigh and perhaps sympathetically sought to calm him down. ¡°You will simply participate as an observer and won¡¯t have to engage with anyone. You still need to work on your mannerisms and complete your education before you can make your debut.¡±
That did calm him down a bit. However, he wondered why he was suddenly asked to come. He guessed it was to gain experience before he left the island soon. His parents are quite nice and try their best not to pressure him, but even then, they had duties they needed to uphold. And he needs to fulfil the duties he wasn¡¯t aware of until recently. Understanding this, he has quickly buried down any of his reservations and held his head high as he declared in the manner he was taught, straightening his back.
¡°Very well, then I will do my best to fulfil my duty.¡± He replies curtly.
¡°A carriage is currently being prepared. Please, prepare yourself and meet me at the entrance.¡± She said, as she bowed and promptly left him to his own devices.
¡°Uhm, what am I supposed to do now?¡± He thought to himself, not having anyone to direct his question to.
That brings us to the present time, his dilemma still having to be resolved. Miss Zaie told him that they were ready to leave in an hour and he had barely anything that needed to be prepared. So now he still has a good chunk of time that needed to be used somehow. While he wanted to use that time to study, he didn¡¯t have access to the library, since it is currently undergoing renovations. However, lazing around doing nothing felt physically impossible to him. The best he could settle for was walking around and exploring the mansion, however that quickly felt pointless as every room looked the same to him.
He tried anywhere he could help, but it ended up a fruitless endeavour.
The kitchen staff turned him away when he offered to do dishes.
Tidying the rooms or cleaning was a proposal that was met with the same rejection.
Even helping with the gardening, a task he thoroughly enjoys, was a wish that was burnt to ashes.
And so, the boy continued on his pointless journey to find anything remotely helpful he could do.
At the same time a boy of the same age was lazily sitting around on one of the many empty seats of the plane he was boarding, chewing on some snacks he snuck away with, before he left for this trip. He gave off the air of someone being forced to serve time in prison, however to him it might be all the same.
¡°Master Alphonse, we will be landing soon. Please make sure to prepare yourself so you can greet the officials accordingly.¡± His father¡¯s subordinate urges him.
He responds with all the distant politeness that is expected in such a situation.
¡°Understood, you may leave now.¡± She nods her head politely and heads back to return to his father on the other side of the plane.
Resting his head on his hands, he glances out the window viewing their landing spot. A solitary, yet large island. He was told of its existence only recently as it is considered confidential information of the highest degree. The island of the so called ¡°celestials¡±.

"So this is the island that is supposedly kept a secret from the rest of the world?" Alphonse thought to himself as he kept looking out the window of the plane, as their landing destination, the celestial island, becomes visible. The island seems to be of rather enormous size and is adjacent to many smaller islands in its vicinity. He was told about the inhabitants, known as the celestials, but has been given rather little context on what significance this name holds. However, it is very obvious to him that these people possess a lot of influence in the world. To be able to live in complete secrecy without any interjection or interference from any governments would undoubtedly require political might. Not to mention, his father as an accomplished politician seems to be rather keen on earning favours with them. And then there''s the conversation he had with his sister right before he left...
"Alright, Al, I''m sure I don''t need to tell you this, but you better be on your best behaviour." His sister, Emma See, told him, as she playfully trapped him in a headlock. She actually uses a bit too much excessive force for it to be called "playful", but he endured her onslaughts enough times to not be fazed by them any more. She was always bad at handling force, when it came to reprimanding him or simply whenever she felt like rough-housing with her sibling, so he is used to taking the brunt of her lack of self-restraint.
"Sure Em, but is it really necessary for me to be present for something like this? I didn''t even know these people existed before..." He was sulking about this the entire day, as he was only told of this involuntary trip yesterday. Suffice it to say, his mood was pretty foul.
"You''re smart enough to figure that one out" She says. Begrudgingly, he agrees as it isn''t too difficult to figure out, why this was so important. He is supposed to debut in the higher society soon, so this trip was no doubt a preparation to that. Add to that the fact, that he is essentially initiated into making connection with a mysterious group he never knew about. He has his role to play, and he hates how aware of it he is.

Not having a quip prepared, he just heaves out a deep sigh, which his sister takes as him signalling defeat, to which she starts smiling smugly in response.
"I had to go on this same trip, when my time came, so this is just par for the course. Also make sure you keep in mind, that I myself have my own connections to some people there, so you better make a good impression, if only for my sake." She says, as she menacingly points a finger at him. Her threat makes him sweat just a bit, but even without that, he would comply in the end. His sister went through a lot of trouble to arrive at her current position of being vice president, and he really wouldn''t want to ruin everything she has built so far. He wouldn''t want to reflect poorly on her, so he just has to suck it up and get this over with.
"Yes, ma''am." He says in a mocking tone, and though she tries to stare at him threateningly, her effort is betrayed by the smile forming on her lips.
"Good enough."
And just, as he was about to free himself from her grasp, she strengthened her grip, immediately conveying that she isn''t done talking.
"Before you go, I want you to know something. The celestials are NOT regular people like or rather regular humans. So do NOT act out of line and don''t cause any conflicts there. Also, try to appease them, however possible. Head this warning and take it seriously. They are NOT people you should mess with."
Hearing her voice change in tone within moments immediately made Alphonse tense. She was dead serious and her stern voice made that abundantly clear. This was clearly about much more than just keeping appearances or persisting in holding on to our current status. It''s almost like this could affect my very life. Almost as if... this is a life or death matter.
