《Champion of the Void》
Chapter 1 - Champion of the Void
Staring out into the void, Lyra sighed in contentment. Her three-year-long journey was finally over. She glanced back at the battlefield, where the lifeless body of Famister, Lord of the Void, lay defeated. Never in her wildest dreams did she imagine conquering him alone. She had spent hundreds of hours mastering his mechanics to teach her guild, planning for a team victory. Yet, unexpectedly, a newly discovered poison that slowly drained his health while she expertly dodged every attack was instrumental.
Ironically the move that had saved her in this final attempt was her Void Leap. His last attack which destroys all reality in the area was side-stepped by bad coding. A small chuckle left her lips as she stood up and went to get the loot. While Staring at the Void in the boss room was nice she knew that there would be something great waiting in that chest that spawned just now.
As she approached, a slew of messages flooded her inbox. Players on her friends list were eager to know what had happened after the global announcement a few minutes ago. "A true achievement deserves a grand prize, I suppose," she thought.
Upon opening the chest, a dagger floated up, glowing with an eerie light. As she reached for it, a new notification appeared before her eyes.
[Congratulations, Champion of the Void. You have been invited to Alerias as a new Champion.]
[Do you accept? Y/N]
With a deep breath, Lyra thought it over. ¡®A new challange?¡¯ Mentally selecting "Yes." in an instant, the world around her dissolved into darkness. She felt a weightless sensation, as if floating in an endless void. Slowly, a soft light began to emanate from the center of the darkness, drawing her attention.
Lyra opened her eyes and found herself standing in a vast, empty space filled with swirling mists of light and shadow. In front of her, a translucent screen materialized, displaying a series of options.

[Select Race]
She stared in amazement as hundreds of options scrolled past, many of them even monstrous non-player races from the game she had been playing. "It looks like every race from the game is here! Insane! What is this?"
As she continued scrolling, her eyes widened when she saw it. A race option she had hoped for years would be added to the game.
[Kitsune - Demi-human Race]
[Traits - Evolution, Karmatic System, Leveling]
[Statistics - Strength, Dexterity, Vitality, Perception, Willpower, Spirit, Luck]
Feeling a rush of excitement at the prospect of having such fluffy tails, she selected it right away. As soon as she did, another figure appeared within the void. A kitsune with auburn hair and a single long tail stood there motionless. Its features gave the eerie impression of being her exact appearance in the real world. A small shudder ran down her spine as she felt slightly violated at the thought that her VR helmet might have recorded her likeness.
A new screen appeared with options to alter the figure. Taking her time to get the Kitsune just the way she wanted, she meticulously checked every detail, even blushing at a few surprising options in the character creator. Glancing at her soon-to-be new form, she saw a Kitsune with curly strawberry blonde hair that faded into purple tips, piercing violet eyes that shone with a star-like brightness, long ears with a few piercings, and a button nose. Her figure was lithe and built for speed and flexibility.
After selecting "Finish," her vision blurred, and suddenly she found herself looking at the motionless form of her real-life body.
The shock was immediate as the void began to consume it. She watched in horror as the body she had lived in her whole life turned to dust and vanished. A cold thump hit her chest as she realized something might be wrong. That body had looked exactly like her and was even wearing her outfit for the day.
Panic rose in her chest as she felt her consciousness begin to fade. The darkness took hold of her once again, as quickly as before she could truly recognize the danger she was in.
Chapter 2 - A Fresh Start
A pulse went through the temple. Flames flickering as a wave to the stele sitting raised above the altar. The room shook as the embedded gems started to glow slowly. Each gem glowed for just a second before going dark. As the last lights reached the top, each went dark until the only one left was the Obsidian. It pulled in the light as if hungry for more, but nothing was left for it to consume.
The sounds of footsteps rang out as the Hall of Champions thrummed with power. The head Priest arrived just before another pulse of power flooded the room. Once again lighting the gems as the flames grew in strength this time. A blinding light as a Ruby was lit this time a small flame ignited. With each step he took forward a new pulse came to empower the Stele. The Diamond shining light the morning glow, Bloodstone emitting a red mist, Melanite shrouded in shadows, and the last gem to come to life, Topaz crackling with lightning.
¡°A new War is beginning, how will the world survive the rise of so many dark stars. The gods are truly cruel to send us a new era so soon after the last one ended. I only hope that they are not as cruel as the last.¡± His hand reached up and caressed the smooth stone. His eyes closing as he prayed to the divine beings that used his world as a battleground.
Lyra awoke slowly as the chirping of insects around her grew louder. The cold breeze of the autumn air brushed against her face as she sat up.
"Did I fall asleep playing the game?" she wondered. The thought vanished quickly as she felt the grass beneath her. She actually felt the grass. Confusion played across her face as she realized this was either in the most advanced DiveVr game ever made or she was actually touching grass. A shock to any gamer.
She quickly bolted up, finding herself in a small clearing surrounded by trees and the sounds of insects. Her eyes traveled around the clearing, searching for any signs that this might be fake. The growing pit of despair in her gut roiled, and she nearly vomited.
"Shit! This cannot be happening," she thought frantically. Falling to the ground, she dry heaved, spitting onto the grass at her feet. Panic finally settled in before a new window popped up.

[Welcome to Alerias, Champion of the Void.]

¡°What?¡± Lyra gasped as she felt the pit in her stomach pull at her body. Her vision grew dark, and everything took on a faded, monochrome color. It was as if she was suddenly seeing the entire world in black and white. She could feel it inside her¡ªa mass of energy so powerful it threatened to tear her apart. Frantically, she tried to channel something, anything, to release the pressure.
[Mana Manipulation has leveled up! 1 ¡ú 2]
The pressure lightened, and Lyra felt a slight sense of control. Reaching out to the forest in front of her, she tried to recall anything from the game that she could use. As if a beacon of hope, she focused on the spell pattern and spoke, ¡°Void Shot.¡±
Nothing happened. The pressure built up more. ¡°No, no, no, no.¡± Thoughts racing, she clung desperately to whatever control she had. Looking inward, as she had done before, she felt the origin of her mana expanding. An epiphany struck her.
¡°Status,¡± she wheezed out.

Upon seeing the completely lopsided stats, she threw every available point into Vitality. As if a weight was lifted off her chest, air flowed through her lungs in ragged breaths. The blacks and whites of her vision pulled back and color returned to the vibrant world around her. Compared to the dull pain of the game, this was the most physical pain she had ever endured. Not wanting to experience it again, she focused on her mana. She moved it around her body, getting herself familiar with the new sense.
¡°Why are my stats so wrong for a level 1?¡± she muttered, sitting on the grass. She moved her hands in front of her face, noting how her body responded to her commands. Everything, from the way her body moved to the way she had felt the pain rolling in, told her something was really wrong.
¡°What was up with the pain levels? Did my settings reset? No, they wouldn¡¯t¡ªthose are linked to the pod,¡± Lyra¡¯s thoughts raced as she finally decided to try to log off.
Lyra willed the settings menu to open. Nothing happened. She said ¡°settings,¡± and nothing happened again. She made the hand gesture to open the settings menu, and still, nothing happened.
Lyra began to sweat again, fearing that she was not in Kansas anymore. A deep sense of vertigo took over as she fell to her knees. She did what she always did in stressful situations and let the fear run through her for a second, then breathed it all out. Deciding that dwelling on her situation won¡¯t help her in the short term she locks the welling up fear away, and focuses.
¡°Now is not the time, If this is a real place and not a game I¡¯m not going to die here. The fact I can¡¯t log out tells me something is wrong in either that I got transported into a new world or I am in an extremely realistic, buggy game. I still have the systems from the game which means if this is a new world I should have an advantage if no one else has it, but if it¡¯s common place I will need to find information on how it works fully. First let¡¯s test all my menus. Let¡¯s check out that new trait.¡±

¡°That explains why I wasn¡¯t able to cast the spell I have no spell script skills. Actually wait.¡± Lyra pales as she closed her eyes and looked inward again. It was gone¡ The mana circuits that she had painstakingly taken months of her life to create was gone. Reduced to a blob of energy with only one connection out toward her tail. ¡°Must have not noticed when I was more focused on not blowing up¡¡±
She opened her eyes looking into the bright blue sky and sighed. ¡°Nothing to do about it right now. I don¡¯t have any notes that I made for it, and it was based on all the mana affinities I had in game so I can¡¯t use it anyway. I¡¯ll just have to make a new one based solely on the void.¡±
while watching her mana flow to get a feel for it she saw her mana pulse to one direction. opening her eyes to look over she saw it, The intricate dagger she had earned from defeating the boss, or maybe better said that she was cursed with. This was what she got for not reading the terms and conditions of her new ¡®Challenge¡¯. As she pondered if she could get a cosmic lawyer to get her out of this a new window appeared.

Chapter 3 - Void Blade
There it was, hilt up in the ground. It looked as if the light around the blade bent to avoid it. The black blade called to Lyra almost as if she could hear it speak. Her eyes locked on it as she kneeled down and reached forward. Grasping the blade, she lifted it up in line with her eyes and looked over the script written on the blade. Runes she had never seen before laced the blade and handle. Taunting her with secrets that she couldn¡¯t know yet.
¡°If this works like it did in the game, all I have to do is resonate with the mana inside.¡±
With the blade in hand, she worked on channeling her mana out from her center, but something kept her from moving more than a few inches from her core. With every failed attempt to move her mana Lyra felt pain start to build up.
¡°The fuck is this? It¡¯s like I¡¯m trying to move through molasses inside my body. This should be the easiest place to move my mana.¡±
Stopping for now, she sits down and focuses inward. Examining why the mana can¡¯t go through her body like it should. Minutes pass as she works on it, the glowing black orb of power inside her consuming her thoughts. She feels out the way it moves. It took close to an hour before she finally saw it. The mana wasn¡¯t moving badly because something was wrong with her body. No, if anything she was built to move mana through herself like gliding on ice. The issue was that her mana was thicker than anything she had ever seen.
Her natural pathways in her body were formed like a river. Completely fine to hold the water as it went by, but unable to handle the flood waters that were her mana. This was why she had nearly died on arrival, it was so dense that her body couldn¡¯t handle the pressure. The more she processes the world around her and what she has become, the more she feels cursed. It was then that she made a realization. Looking back towards her tail, the glorious blonde fur ending in a purple tip. Inside her tail were innate runes of power, and better yet they are void based. Sending a tendril of power down the connection to her tail from her core, it flowed with such ease that she almost couldn¡¯t tell that it was still moving slowly.
[Mana Manipulation 2 ¡ú 3]
¡°This is what I was missing. I should be able to bind the blade finally and if I study my tail, I should be able to combine the runes needed to form my Novice Core.¡±Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.
Slowly and gently, she brought the blade close to her tail and then in the final inches moved her tail forward to touch it. Channeling the mana into the blade she felt an immediate resonance like no other item she has ever used before in the game. Maybe it was that she was in a new world, or maybe it was her affinity with the Void, but she felt her power flowing to the blade. The blade kept drawing in more and more mana as it greedily absorbed all it could take. Trying to pull the blade from her tail didn¡¯t work either as it had latched on somehow. Seconds passed as she fed the blade seemingly endless amounts of mana.
Seconds turned to a minute, then two, and then everything went dark for Lyra. One second she was channeling mana, and then the next she was waking up with grass and dirt in her mouth from falling face first into the ground. Sitting up, she spit out the dirt and tried to get the taste of grass out of her mouth.
¡°Gross. I feel like I got wrung dry.¡±
Looking in, she saw her mana was heavily diminished. Reviewing her status, she found herself at almost empty with a bit left over to spare. The blade was ravenous if anything.
¡°Taking so much of my mana just to bind must mean that it''s at least powerful.¡±
It took a second as the flood of information about the blade came back to her as she slowly recovered. The blades information seemed like it was less than open about all its secrets, but the one thing it was open about was its mana drain ability. Each attack made with the weapon would siphon mana from the target and deposit it into a storage gem on the crossguard for some kind of use. As Lyra looked the blade, and the new gem on it a new screen opened up.
[Congratulations on completing the quest - Claim the Void Blade]
She was ok for one second before suddenly it felt like her guts were being ripped apart. Her pathways were getting rewritten as her core condensed and was refined. Looking inwards, she saw the new runes forming inside of her. She realized that the system was giving her a Novice Core as a reward for completing the quest. As her core finished up her breathing was finally calming down. She knew for sure that there was no way this was a game still. The pain was too much for her to imagine someone would ever play it.
Internally her pathways glowed brightly while maintaining the dark appearance of the previous core. Her mind wandered to her newly formed Novice Core. The Core rotated slowly now with the new patterns holding it in place, and with her new pathway marked with the runes she could finally channel mana through her body. It was still slow but now she had full access to her high mana pool. Opening her eyes she looked down to where the Blade sat once again stabbed through the ground. She reached again for her new weapon. The tool of her survival just as dangerous to her as her enemies.
Chapter 4 - Champions
A scream of rage went out as a lean man slid under a horizontal swipe of a great sword. Quickly rising with twin swords in hand, slicing the Achilles tendon of his opponent before ripping gaping wounds up his back and across every visible piece of skin on the green skin foe. Once sure that he couldn¡¯t stop him, he swung his swords in a cross section removing the head from the creature''s shoulders. Blood misted up and coated the man who had just won the fight.
The bloodlust in Alucard¡¯s eyes coalesced causing them to glow an eerie red. The smile that split his lips stretched into a disturbing grin as two small fangs poked out. Licking his lips, he looked around to the tribe of goblins and orcs and raised his weapons once more. He tilted his head one way until his neck cracked loudly and then the other way. As he breathed out, a fine red mist coated his body as he walked forward into the large crowd of goblins and orcs. An unhinged laugh poured from his throat as he charged the fleeing civilians.
A sigh of relief went through her as she was able to stabilize another person. Something had gone through and hurt a lot of people in the village. Her healing was the only reason for as many survivors as there were. A raid had gone through here, a vile group that loves to rip apart lives. She knew she should do something about them but she couldn¡¯t just the thought of coming face to face with any of those demons brings a shudder to her body. Closing her eyes and channeling the healing light, those around her in the infirmary started to heal slowly.
Fear is a killer in this world and Marigold knew that. She was only trying to help those in need. The people thanked her and brought her gifts but she declined them all except for food. She needed to keep eating to keep healing, to burn more fuel and save as many as she could. Her pure white eye welled up with tears as she thought of all those she couldn¡¯t save, and she held it close like an anchor to do better.
The flame burned brightly as the wood crackled. She stared into the flames as her hand waved through it. Unbothered by the heat she sat down in it. Fire wrapping around her like a halo. She breathed in and the fire pulled in, then as she breathed out it flared up. Her golden eyes open and the blaze burns brighter. Standing up, the flames lick up her body until it reaches her hair and joins the inferno that makes her body. The wood turns to ash under her feet as she started to float.
Pulling in the flames Ki¡¯ron moves forward through the woods, doing her best to not burn anything. The animals flee as she moves slowly, like a creeping forest fire. Any sparks that fly off and set something ablaze is drawn back. She looks in the distance to a mountain, the only place where she might not cause a disaster.
The wind blew hard around the cloaked figure. His arms extending out to points like daggers. His target lay in front of him. A portly old man indulging in the pleasures of life in the most vulgar ways possible. A disgusting pig of a man. Pulling the cloak back before dropped from the rafters of the room. A loud thump could be heard along with the splintering of wood as his weight fully came to bare on the flooring. A cry of alarm followed by pleas for one''s life. The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
Kurai did not listen to the pig of a man''s pleas for mercy. His dark complexion blended into the darkness of the room. His horns shinning in the flickering torchlight. He knew his new appearance bred fear, but it was the strength in his body that he loved most of all. His katars sat in his hand as he beheaded the pig. Disgusted by even the putrid blood of the man. He looked around at the group of women in the room cowering in the corners. Putting away the weapons in hands he went to one of them, a small demoness. Reaching down, he lifted her into his arms before disappearing into nothing.
A flash of light followed by a sharp crack of thunder lit the figure standing at the top of a mountain. His wings crackled with each slow movement. Then in a flash and a crash of thunder he was gone, flying high into the air and the storm above him. A smile covered his face as his wings beat harder and harder, getting as far up as he could. As he reached the clouds above he heard the rumbling as the lightning struck him and he soared even higher.
Hawk passed the clouds so fast he made them part. His love of flying and new body made him burst with happiness as he soared above the storm clouds to look up into the night sky. The stars above him shining so bright that he almost couldn¡¯t believe the beauty of it all. His flight halted as he entered a dive. Slamming past the clouds again, one beat of his wings sounding of thunder as he dipped and dove around. His laughs could be heard for kilometers as he enjoyed himself.
Lyra turned the blade over in her hand, a smooth practiced motion as it flit between her fingers. She had been in this new body for hours at this point, testing and moving herself in every way she could think of to get ahold of her abilities. Lyra''s attempts at using her skills went easier than she thought they would, with the new pathways that flowed through her body turning what was once a deadlock stop into an open highway. Lyra''s mana flowed through her body as she stood, a layer of light shimmering over her upon activating her illusion skill. Her form shifted from the look she had sculpted to her old human appearance. It wasn¡¯t perfect since the illusion skill had only gone up to level 4 from her practice. Standing in front of Lyra was a mirror image, only instead of her current appearance, she was faced with a reflection of who she was before her plunge into this new reality. Her grip tightened on her blade, as though she could simply fend off the pang of grief that shot through her once confronted with an image of who she once was.
A flick of her wrist, and the illusions vanished as she looked the new quest over in an attempt to lose herself in a task. Lyra just needed to reach the Novice Core''s level cap and receive a reward to hopefully shortcut her way forward. In the past all she cared about was getting to the top of her game, but now she has a chance to become someone more. To be someone that can do anything. Lyra took the first step toward leaving the clearing she had awoken in, the looming trees in the distance towering above her. Weapon in hand like an extension of her body, Lyra stepped through the threshold to the sound of her heartbeat in her ears, pounding away like drums from the excitement blooming in her chest.
Chapter 5 - Level Up
Lyra¡¯s steps were silent as she went through the underbrush of an overgrown forest. Each foot placement was deliberate as any noise she made might be heard by a predator. Not knowing where she was or what she could run into being careful is all she can do in this situation. Taking deep breaths she enjoyed the fresh air around her. The well practiced form of Lyra hidden under a minor illusion of her surroundings.
¡®Nothing is out here.¡¯ she thought, ¡®I need to find something to progress my level.¡¯ Lyra¡¯s thoughts got interrupted by a loud crash, and a roar heard in the distance making all the leaves shake. Her head whipped to the direction of the clear as day fight. Trees flew in the air after being uprooted and a constant blast of flames and ice visible from her position in the forest got her moving much faster. A few seconds of running and sounds of the forest clearing out from the range of the conflict. She was under a truly massive tree watching as the other forest dwellers ran further away from where she was.
¡®How many fights have I missed by sneaking around?¡¯ Lyra thought while sliding down the tree, her adrenaline kept pumping through her veins. The fight in the background is just as loud as earlier. Her erratic breathing calmed as she felt slightly safer. Her fingers brushed against the rough wood that her back leaned against. Tracing the grain of the wood she grabbed a piece of bark and pulled herself up. Lyra¡¯s gaze solidified as she saw a target finally in view. It looked like a snake around 3 meters long, but with the stinger on its tail the length of which would not be a fun experience if it struck.
Lyra moved like she had always done in the past. It was like her body was on autopilot, and the practiced motion of crouching down to move behind her target, and the phantom-like movement of her body as she got right on top of the snake that was also fleeing. Dagger in hand Lyra swung down severing the tail in just a single cut right between the vertebrates. Not letting a new tool go to waste she gripped the removed tail in her other hand right as the snake felt the pain of losing a part of itself. Its reaction and movement didn¡¯t catch Lyra off guard as she used the snake''s own tail to block the bite from the snake as her dagger slid up and removed the head of the snake. A little chuckle came from her throat as she looked at the snake head biting its own tail.
[Level 4 Dagger Tail slain]
Small motes of refined mana floated out of the dismembered body of the snake, and with a small pull from her core Lyra dragged the mana into her core. It floated toward her center and entered the patterns as the runes covering her core glowed a dark purple. The small rush of energy that flowed through her body got her moving quickly. Lyra could no longer hear the fight in the distance anymore as an idea came to her as a new screen appeared. This story originates from a different website. With a smile, and a careful push at the top of the snake''s mouth released the tail from its bite and she carefully placed it on the ground as she grabbed the body over. Looking around Lyra threw up a new illusion around her and the dead Dagger Tail, with the tail in hand she took her knife to the base of the flesh connecting it to the bladed tail. Her hands moved as quickly as she could to remove the skin and lay it down next to her crouched form. Once the snake skin was free, she trimmed the flesh off the tail leaving only the spinal cord. Using her knife Lyra freed a piece of bark and she placed the good meat that she could get from its tail on top of the makeshift plate. Her blade swiped up at the tree carving a grove for sap to drip down from the opening she had made.
Mana flowed as a Spirit Flame formed on the meat and cooked it slowly. Lyra grabbed and moved the snake skin to the sap coating it liberally. The sap coated skin in hand Lyra formed another flame and held it close to the flame careful not to burn herself. The skin blacken as the sap turned dark and more fluid over the next few minutes. Her flame over the meat that got cooked moved as she reached over to eat it then fell even further down to burn the bark and turn it into char. Releasing the flame on what used to be bark, Lyra placed the char into the melted sap and stirred with a nearby stick. Once she felt like it was ready she took the tail and coated it in the tar, and wrapped the spinal cord like a handle before placing it to sit next to her.
¡®I need to get moving as soon as my new dagger finishes cooling off.¡¯ standing Lyra pulled the corpse up, cleaning it, and dressed the meat. Once she felt it was clean enough, she hung it using her dagger edge down to bleed it out. Lyra crouched down and looked around to see if anything was watching her even with her illusions up. Her watch ended after just a few minutes as a creature that looked like a wolf infected by mange but twice the size came sniffing at the ground.
The milky white eyes of the beast stared down the tree that Lyra was sitting under, her body shuddering at its gaze that she hoped couldn¡¯t pierce her illusions. The way its body moved screamed at her to avoid being hit. The strength and ease it moved with betraying its rotted appearance. Her mind raced as each part of her surroundings came to her. Thoughts of running came as she steeled herself. ''I won''t die. I can''t die.'' She felt for the mana coursing in her body and focused.
Hiatus notice
Hi there just gonna be going on a 1 month hiatus and do some edits to past chapters and cleaning up of the story want to make thing better than they were and make it overall a better story. I¡¯m sorry for the short notice and no chapter today but I hope you can understand.
The author''s tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
things I¡¯m hoping to improve are the character depth and making her feel more like a person and also making sure my descriptions are better than they are now. I¡¯ll also use the time to get a small backlog and set it up to avoid things like this where I felt stuck. Again thank you for reading and hopefully it won¡¯t be to long until I post again.
Hiatus Notice 2
Hey things happened in my life that affected my ability to write and my drive to write. I will likely be entering another lengthy hiatus until things clear up and I hope you can understand. All you need to know is that work and social life have been heavily effecting me and I hope to continue this story again at some point soon. I might be redoing a good portion of mechanics of the system and a few other things to get the ball rolling in a better more consistent manner. again I am sorry for the delays and hopefully when I get back to it the wait will have been worth it.
