《Class:Tanker?》 Awakaining His ears were ringing as he coughed up blood. Looking down he spotted a large sliver of shrapnel wedged cleanly into his stomach. Though he didn''t have time to worry about that his tank was still running so he was still in the fight. He ran a finger over the markings he had carved into the hull of the tank. In iron and steel through fire and fury armor for the front armor to the last. At least that''s what he believed the Latin he had scratched there meant. His tank was for lack of a better word a hunk of old scrap metal with a bunch of prototype junk slagged onto it. The old Abrams tank had been one of the few things that couldn''t be controlled when the bots took over, so they had quickly been retrofitted. His was one of the first to have a rail cannon. Meaning it was slow hefty and had the firepower to punch through one of those massive walkers that was currently tearing apart the city. Why the brass had spent so much on fucking genetic experiments instead of improving what works, he¡¯d never understand why. The weird Skibidi toilet looking Cyborg monstrosities were admittedly powerful but they weren''t super soldiers like they had been advertised. They had been promising them Spartans or space marines instead they were given horrifying abominations. With human heads slapped onto mostly robotic monstrous bodies. He watched as the counter ticked up and up, and up,, and up,,, so painfully slowly. The massive six legged Walker blew up another building as he had to wait. He wasn''t sure where the rest of his battalion had gotten to but since he wasn''t seeing any more shots at the blasted thing, he figured there weren''t any of them left. Right as he pulled the trigger the capacitor overloaded, and he was essentially cooked alive in his metal casket, but the shot hit. At the very least he had completed his final mission. Nylah bolted awake, the dream already slipping from memory like water through a sieve. As her right of awakening grew closer, she kept having these weird dreams. The annoying part was she couldn¡¯t remember them afterwards other than a vague sense of it¡¯s importance. She had been granted special permission to go ahead and take the right early. Though it was only by a few weeks. The right of awakening happened once a year and every child in the village that turned 16 within that year was allowed to participate. While you could refuse no one was dumb enough to do so. Anyone could actively perform the right of awakening at any time and a lot of kids accidentally had done so long before the yearly ceremony. The ceremony just required anyone to kill something classified as a monster. The villagers captured and even raised horned rabbits for their meat and fur so there was no shortage of them for the ceremony each year. They would just put off slaughtering the beasts for their fur for a little while before the ceremony and let the kids get the kill. Afterwards, they would be returned to their owner who could do with the meat and the fur as they wished. Upon killing their first monster they would gain access to the system. The system had originally been designed for the heroes of the world summoned by the gods. However, as the centuries passed on and heroes became less common, they inevitably had children. And their children had children and their children''s children had children and basically, the bloodline thinned out enough that everyone nowadays had access to the system in some form. The more pure bloodlines had more powerful versions of it but occasionally it would just pop up randomly in some kid with a more powerful or unique version. Some people believed that this was the reason the heroes were no longer summoned or at least no longer summoned as often. Or at least as often as once in a generation one or two would appear. The theory was that the gods were actively granting boosts or improved versions of the systems to the residents of their own worlds. Though she didn''t know how much of that was to be believed some of the priests said that way of thinking was blasphemy while some of the scholars said it was something called genetics or whatever. She was just looking forward to getting the ability to use magic. Her mom had mage as her first awakening class but when she had gotten seamstress as her secondary. They had later fused into a string Mage. She had seen her mother in a fight a few times, she could use it to turn her foes into puppets or slice them up with razor thin threads. Only to turn around and magic into being a dozen outfits for the local town guard. Reading on this site? This novel is published elsewhere. Support the author by seeking out the original. Her father was, well she wasn''t quite sure what he was at this stage. He said he was branching out, but he had to have almost a dozen classes and while he didn''t have particularly high variance in the classes it helped him do whatever work was available. Warrior, Bard, blacksmith, the list went on he could fix or work just about anything and that''s what he did. He didn''t really have a singular job, just helped out wherever and made a decent wage for it from what she could tell. She wasn''t quite sure what she was going to get as her starting class, but she was hoping for a magic class. While warriors Archers and so on were useful in their own right she was small. Smaller than the rest of her year, despite being fifteen years old well sixteen in three weeks which is why she needed the exception to get it this year instead of having to wait till next year. Till then she had to help her mother put upthe decorations for tonight''s ceremony. It wasn''t gonna be a huge event but there would be decorations drinking a small feast with music and so on. She had always looked up to the older kids who were showing off their new abilities. Sparring training with some of the adults and just goofing around with people who had similar or the same abilities to help them get used to their new powers. And it was finally her turn she¡¯d finally get to do it herself! As the day drew to its end like it did every year. It did so with a sense of energy in the air as the families with kids that were participating this year started to gather in the town¡¯s square. The kids around her age were eagerly laughing and making boisterous claims about what weird and exciting powers they would have. More than a few even claimed they would get one of the rarer higher classes, but Nylah knew better. She had a, admittedly rather out of date but still she had a copy of the class and skill codecs. The book wasn''t exactly rare, but books weren''t exactly common either. It had been mixed in with a bag of junk goods a wandering merchant had on his wagon when she found it. He had even sold it to her mother for relatively cheap three silvers. Considering most books were anywhere between five to twenty silvers, that was a downright bargain. Even if she later discovered the codex was half a century old. Though it still had most of the same information in it. The books were only ever updated whenever the registry in the capital was updated as far as she knew. She had volume forty nine and they were on fifty two. She had managed to compare the books once, scribbling down what little she could on the back of the book¡¯s cover. Best she could understand she was missing maybe eight classes and maybe forty two skills. Regardless it had painted a rather stark picture unless your family was famous for producing some rare class you were likely just to have the basic archer fighter warrior or Mage. Maybe one of its evolutions if you were extremely lucky but those were rare. As the afternoon faded to twilight the ceremony finally began. Nylah, being the youngest had to go last so she watched as her friends got their classes, and yeah, they were the expected warriors Archer, etc. Though there was one rare which was surprising as she had only seen three in her entire life though it wasn''t anything to advance. The woodsman class specialized in hunting and blade combat. While it could use a bow it had very few actual skills for bows. Instead, it was heavy into wilderness survival and axe based combat. Her friend Charles had been the oldest of the group and the one to actually get the woodsman class. Her friend Marianne had got a typical archer class, but she had almost every skill unlocked at level one. Which most people believed meant she was probably close to an evolution. It finally came time for Nylah¡¯s turn, she picked up the knife and approached the last cage with the little monster in it. She had fought a horned rabbit once before and had nearly unlocked her class when she was eight and a few of them had managed to escape. Though she hadn''t managed to get the kill back then. She still found the fact that they had to kill to gain power a little disturbing, but she wasn''t a God nor did she claim to have any understanding of them beyond what the local preacher taught. As she sank the dagger between the creature''s ribs she was struck with a splitting headache. Most people just winced but it felt like something was drilling into the side of her skull. She grabbed her head andstumbled a few steps before tipping over. When she came to a few seconds later to the shock of the crowd now formed around her She could only focus on the blue screen floating in front of her invisible to anyone other than herself. ¡°Huh what the heck is a Tanker.¡± she said unable to look away from the class section of her status screen. shovels, lanterns and stats [Name: Nylah Lawcinder. Age: 15/Y +. Race: Human. Mutation 0%. Evolution 49%. Class¡¯s: Tanker. [level 1.] Active skills: Tool kit. Passive skills: Catalog, Armored, Quick repair.] ¡°Nylah sweetheart respond to me! What happened?!¡± Her mother said worriedly. It didn''t escape Nylah¡¯s notice that more than a few of the adults had their hands on their holstered weapons. More than one though was even trying to hide that they already had there¡¯s out. ¡°Yeah, I''m fine just got my class. I don''t recognize it though uh the class comes up as tanker level 1. The active skill something called toolkit. Passive skills are catalog, armored, and quick repair.¡± And until she hit level 5 that''s all it would say. The skill menu unlocked more information as the user¡¯s level rose. At level 5 it would let you see your full status. At level 20 it let you see possible class evolutions or skills you could earn or evolve. At 50 it would let you pick a skill after every level up. You could subclass every 10 levels it didn''t even have to be in the same class. Nylah''s father had simply gotten 10 levels in one class subclassed and gotten that up to level 10 and repeated over and over again. The preacher the one person in town who had a codex beyond Nylah started checking it. Even though hers was a single issue out of date, having a new one been released about six years ago. She hadn''t seen fit to buy a new one. ¡°I don''t see that listed here could it be a new class or an evolved class that no one¡¯s ever stumbled upon? Her father does have quite a few classes under his name, it could be that it''s a fusion of multiple classes. It seems to be a utility based class at least based off of some of the skill''s names. Though I don''t see any of those skills listed. I''d have to take a deeper look other than? Ohh armored allows the user to more easily wield and maintain armor that sounds good enough. Uh, I don''t see a quick repair, but repair is an equipment restoration skill. So, it¡¯s likely a more advanced version of the repair skill. It¡¯s likely faster and less mana intensive as well. Though according to this it runs the risk of weakening or even damaging or destroying pieces of equipment it''s used on. So, while it might be able to mend a torn bit of armor in a pinch it''s best not to rely on it unless you absolutely need to. Toolkit is unique I don''t see that here in the active section at all but if I had to make a guess it''s some sort of crafting or support skill. It¡¯s rare to get a crafting class out of the gate but even then, it should be useful as it''s clearly not a basic one. It¡¯s not listed here so once it''s a bit more developed, probably around level 10, I''d recommend writing a letter or making a trip to the capital to get it registered. There are people there with actual skills that could give you more information than I can.¡± She said looking up from her old book. Nylah just frowned down looking at the screen she wanted to learn magic though now that she had the system she could in theory learn a few basic spells. And once she reached level 10 she could multiclass into one of the magic classes but she had been waiting for so long already to finally learn magic. It would just be so much harder without a magic class. Despite her getting an advanced class it was one she really didn''t want, especially if it was actually a crafting based class. Don''t get her wrong, she had nothing but respect for the crafting classes, but it wasn''t for her. Yeah, she was small and wasn''t the strongest of her years, but she wanted to go off and be an adventurer like her friends. This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there. The world was a dangerous place in the human territories weren''t that big. The Royal Army was mostly just made up of high ranking individuals devoted purely to protecting large swaths of territory against the things beyond their borders. since the world was far from a safe place even in held territory wars between the races and factions were rare. This was only helped by the fact the monsters of the world had a bad habit of swooping in whenever they sensed weakness. Leading to a rather work together than die alone mentality. Adventurers were primarily meant to protect the home front and occasionally venture off into new territories. Most of the town had been built by adventurers looking to settle down. Her parents were one good example of that. As such they were one of the farthest villages from what was considered secured territory it would only be a few more years before the secure border would move over them with the number of towns that have been set up in recent years. It was only a matter of time before the Royal Army and the adventurers Guild would be setting out on a new cleansing and claiming as much territory as they could. And Nylah had been looking forward to being a part of that when she grew up. She sighed and figured she might as well try out her first skill opening up toolkit she got a prompt. [Warning toolkit is currently empty please purchase items from catalog.] That confused her catalog was a passive skill, wasn''t it? She tried focusing on catalog like she had been taught to and another blue screen popped up. It was a list of items hammers, axes, shovels, something called a wrench, blankets, trousers, lanterns, a box of nails the list went on and on and on. Wanting to try it out she selected the shovel, figuring it be the easiest to get and it nearly knocked her out. But the catalog skill had leveled up. At level 2 it now showed a price tag on every item. [shovel 0/10 MP.] After watching it for a few minutes the counter ticked up 1/10mp then 2/10mp then 3/10mp and so on. While it wasn''t exactly what she was expecting. Though she could at least use this to judge how many mana points she had. Judging by how the price tag of the shovel was at 10 she guessed she had about 10 mp or it had drained her mana more than that and cut her regeneration to fill in the rest. Regardless when she hit five mana she tried opening up toolkit and to her surprise, another blue box popped up and inside of it was the shovel. Tapping her finger on the shovel¡¯s icon a simple wooden and iron shovel of finer make than anything she''d seen before popped into existence in front of her much to the shock of any onlookers that where still paying her any attention. It had a handle on one end and an oversized spade shaped blade with a serrated edge on the other it was even sized to fit perfectly in her hand. ¡°How did you do that?¡± Her father asked having spotted her little display. Nylah quickly explained of how one of her passive skills apparently worked like a shop using her mana points to purchase items and once purchased they were placed into toolkit allowing her to summon them at will. However, with some experimentation with catalog, she came to the conclusion that she used 1 mp when she summoned or unsummoned an item. Starting at level 1 most classes started with somewhere between 10 and 30 mp. So she was definitely on the low end of that which sucked. So she¡¯d drain her entire mana pool every time she made a purchase. Which wasn''t the most pleasant sensation possible. So she¡¯d have to try and level it up as best she could. She needed to if she ever wanted to try and get a magic class. By the end of the night, she had managed to purchase a Lantern and summon it. When she finally went home for the night. She huddled up in her bed and watched the flickering light of her lantern letting her mind mull over the day¡¯s events. Before turning it off to get some sleep. She couldn''t help but feel disappointed with her class and new abilities. Who knew maybe it was actually incredibly useful, and she just hadn''t figured it out yet. She¡¯d have to hope for more. As she drifted off, she hoped she didn''t have another strange dream like she''d been having. She could never remember the strange dreams only that they weren''t good ones. training day part 1 Nylah¡¯s mother couldn''t help but give her daughter a strange look. As she brought Nylah her porridge, she watched her daughter try to poke the air with her spoon. ¡°Sweetheart, what are you doing? You know you can''t interact with your menus with any object other than your finger.¡± Her mother said gently not quite scolding her, but in a tone that Nylah recognized as her you are being silly tone. ¡°Trust me I know Mom I''m not trying to, well, sort of not I have a skill called Toolkit. It lets me store items I purchased using Catalog for some reason that''s an active passive skill however, that works. But I was wondering if I could store other items in Toolkit other than ones I purchased. I''m not having much luck with it though. But from what I have discovered so far, and keep in mind I still need to do a bit more testing. Toolkit and Catalog are two halves of the same hole. Catalog is just a list of items that I can purchase using mana. Toolkit then stores those items and allows me to summon them whenever I like at the cost of a single point of mana. I can then return them for a single point of mana. I think I can purchase more than one, but I have to pay the price again. Because when I tried to summon a second shovel the one, I left in my bedroom just seemed to teleport to my hand. Though I still have the option to purchase a shovel despite already owning one, but I don''t wanna waste the mana just yet to purchase another shovel to test it. If the price tag section of Catalog is correct, I can only currently purchase the cheapest items that cost 10 mana points and that is my entire mana pull at the moment.¡± ¡°Wait, you have a skill that lets you see your stats before you unlock the status sectioning your status screen!¡± ¡°Not exactly, I can only see mana. There''s a little percentage next to the price section in the catalog and I have to have the catalog open to see how much mana I have. Then once I purchased the item, I still need mana to summon it. Meaning if I purchase something I have to wait until I regenerate a mana point to even use the skill and summon the item. Either way, it''s not very intuitive or convenient I know there''s a spell called inventory that lets you summon and store items for a mana cost, and at first, I thought this might just be a version of that but no. It seems Toolkit just appears to be a lesser version of inventory that only works with Catalog¡¯s items.¡± ¡°Well let''s have a look through it then. There might be some useful stuff in there.¡± ¡°I have, and I think it''ll add more as I level it but for the time being at level 2 I can only buy basic things. Like shovels axes something called a survival knife. Uh, a utensil kit something called cans which I''m assuming is some type of food because it lists food alongside it like canned corn canned beef so on even soup. There''s blankets and cots, the most expensive item is a tent for 100 MP. Um there''s some weird clothes they don¡¯t look very good though. Helmets basic pants both long and short. They only come in three colors though, brown, black, and green. There are a few more things but it''s pretty basic stuff like my Lantern. There''s even furniture in there but from what I understand it''s more like what you''d have on a trip or March not like what you have in a house. Other than that, there isn''t much to choose from so that''s about it really.¡± Nylah sighed as she flipped through the list one more time not finding anything new but still enraptured by her new abilities. ¡°Now now I know you''re curious about your new abilities, but you need to get ready to go meet up with the others. To practice and hopefully unlock a few more of them.¡± Her mother gently reminded her as she set to work cleaning off the table. This reminder spurred Nylah into motion. She quickly gobbled down the last of her breakfast before darting off to the training yards outside of town where she found her friends already waiting. The training grounds weren''t much, a few targets if you practice weapons, and a storage shed for said practice arrows and weapons. There weren''t but a few kids milling around, already playing with the practice weapons when Nylah arrived. However, it wasn''t long before the rest of the kids from the ceremony showed up along with their instructor, the oldest elf in the village Gage. Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon. Gage had at one point been a soldier in the kingdom''s army until one day he''d come home and found no one waiting for him. When he had finally tracked down his family. He¡¯d found they had simply moved on without him. In the years that followed, he found himself bereft of meaning and as an elf, he still had a long life ahead of him. After a few years of moving around, he found himself without coin or purpose and with more debt than he was willing to admit to. He eventually joined up with a motley group of adventurers to earn the money he needed to pay off said debt. When they had settled down, he ended up more or less adopting the families that followed. While most of his old friends were gone now, he found a new purpose in looking after their grandkids and the village they founded. As such he''d only picked up the teacher class in the past few years and, well, while he wasn''t the highest level teacher in the village his weapons master class made him perfect for teaching the basics of classes, skills, and weapons to the kids. He had paired the kids off into teams of two which there unfortunately wasn''t enough for but they were close enough. He''d have to spar with one of the kids himself, but eh, it was not a big deal. But since there was only seven kids this year his choices in pairings weren''t exactly the best. Nylah and a boy named Gregor were the hardest to place Gregor was a orc. Orcs were tricky when it came to mixing with other races the orc part of them was always dominant. Meaning if you had orc in your blood it would always be there no matter how muddled it got if anyone had kids with true orcs they would be a true orc or an orc. True orcs were the Dumber bigger cousins to the orc. If you diluted the blood even more by mixing it with another race, usually humans you got half orcs, and in the case of elf¡¯s high orcs, or in the case of the dwarf''s dweller orcs. The list of subspecies went on and on. Basically, if there was an acknowledged race there was an orc sub species associated with it. Nylah on the other hand was well there was no real good term for what she was. The least offensive term he''d ever heard was mixed multi racial. Though most people just referred to them as mutts they were usually the mixing of two or more of the mixed races. Problem was those usually had a harder time producing offspring of their own. That was why they never went on to produce enough of them to start up their own races. Nylah¡¯s mother was a mix of half dwarf and half elf and since humans seem to have the easiest time mixing with the other races two half human races reproducing was not an uncommon occurrence. Her father on the other hand was a rare mix being half orc and half dragon kin. This meant Nylah was a unique mix of traits and features. It also meant she was unfortunately an only child despite how hard her parents had been trying to have more kids. Gage had to admit to himself if they succeeded even half as often as they had tried, she¡¯d likely have a few dozen siblings running around and one of them was enough trouble as it is. She was likely held together by a mix of orc dominant genes and humans near infamous ability to breed with just about anything even some things they really shouldn''t have. Many scholars equating that very thing to the more humanoid and intelligent monster races. She was a tiny thing most didn''t bother looking close enough would mistake her for a child if not for her abundance of assets. She lacked the beard of the dwarfs but had enough of their stocky build that he''d almost feel sorry for anyone who thought they could knock her over. She had the pointy ears common with most elven adjacent¡¯s. Her skin color had the faintest hints of the orc¡¯s green tones but if you ever got her to open her mouth her orc heritage became a lot easier to spot. While she didn''t have the tusks most orcs and high orcs had she had the very large pronounced canines they were known for. She had spines and spikes poking through her skin on various points on her body though she shed them often. More than once when she had gotten hurt scales had worked their way out from underneath the wound to seal it. Orcs and dragon kin both had exceptional healing capabilities and Gage had watched her father regrow enough limbs to know just how powerful mixing that blood could be. The worse you hurt the girl the more spiked and armored she became only to shed it over the following weeks. She lacked the long powerful and dexterous tales of her more draconic heritage. Instead, she had a short stumpy tail only a bit longer than what you''d find on a cobalt. Still, it was long enough to reach the floor. Though the most striking feature of the girl wasn''t her long black hair streaked with almost bluish green discolorations. Or the fact that she''d likely be able to walk off being punted through a wall by someone nearly three times her size, no it was her eyes. Her right one was a vibrant blue streaked with flakes of red and gold while her left was a vivid emerald green with much the same discoloration as her first. Her irises were an odd mix of the cat like pupils the elves were known for and the thin reptilian slits of Dragon Kin. But what was the most surprising of it was just how expressive the eyes were. True she had many of the characteristics and tells you''d find on the dragon kin with their tail or an elf with their twitching ears. But he had never seen a race they could say so much with just their eyes. In a rage, they would shrink to a thin slit enjoy they swell up to be almost ridiculously big. In the dark, they could see things even his elvin heritage struggled with and almost seemed to glow like a faint ember. He sighed and figured most wouldn''t notice so many details, but his skills made him a bit odd and being a level 49 painter didn''t help. That said he¡¯d have to see if he couldn¡¯t bribe her into letting him make a painting with her friends for the town hall. Ha he¡¯d put good gold on them being something special in the future and bragging about his students was always fun. In the end, he ended up having to pair off the poor girl with Gregor who was quite literally three times her size. He just hoped he was right about her ability to survive being punted through a wall by someone of Gregory''s size. She¡¯d need that durability if she actually took a hit from the boy.
